UNESCO Sites in Sicily

The island of Sicily is home to 7 UNESCO World Heritage Sites.  Our road trip visits parts of all seven. (Note: Several have multiple locations within the same Heritage Site.)

  • Siracusa Two areas of Siracusa, our first road trip stop, are included in the World Heritage Site called Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica .  The first is the Island of Ortigia , Siracusa’s old town centre.  The second is the Archaeological Park of Neapolis.  Make time to visit both.
  • Noto Valley UNESCO recognized eight late Baroque towns of south-eastern Sicily in the Noto Valley (Val di Noto) as a World Heritage Site in 2002.  Our road trip visits the towns of Noto, Modica, Scicli, Ragusa and Catania.  All towns were rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, in the new Sicilian Baroque style, on top of or beside their original townsites.
  • Casale The magnificent Roman Villa of Casale , near Piazza Armerina, was the centre of a large, country estate.  The site showcases one of the largest and most complex collections of Roman mosaics in the world.
  • Valley of the Temples The Valley of the Temples , near modern day Agrigento, is what remains of the ancient Greek city of Akragas, the 4th largest city in the 5 th century BCE.
  • Palermo, Montreal and Cefalu In 2015, nine religious and civic structures, built during the period of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily (1130-1194), were recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Called the Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalú and Monreale , seven sites are in Palermo and the other two are the cathedrals in Cefalú and Monreale.
  • Aeolian Islands The Aeolian Islands are a set of volcanic islands to the northeast of Sicily, recognized by UNESCO as an example of volcanic island-building.
  • Mount Etna The Mount Etna World Heritage Site (19,237 hectares in size) is strictly protected and the most scientifically important area of Mount Etna.  Europe’s more active volcano was recognized by UNESCO in 2013.  This is a must-see when visiting Sicily.

The first road trip stop is Siracusa on the southeastern coast of Sicily.

The historic city of Siracusa (Syracuse) offers an abundance of ancient ruins and baroque architecture to explore.  In ancient times, the city was one of the major power centres of the Mediterranean world.  The Island of Ortigia , Siracusa’s small, atmospheric, old town centre, is recognized by UNESCO.  Its narrow alleys are lined with medieval palaces and grand Baroque cathedrals.

Andy standing in front of the ornate Baroque Siracusa Cathedral.

Piazza Duomo, the main square, is dominated by the imposing Cathedral of Syracuse (Duoma di Siracusa), originally a Greek temple dedicated to Athena built in the 5 th century BCE. Inside, its columns still bear the marks from when it was converted into a church in the 7th century CE.  Its current Baroque façade was added in the late 1700s.  Visit Ortigia’s street market on Via Emmanuele de Benedictis.  Vendors sell fresh produce, cheeses and seafood from colourful stalls.

To the north of Ortigia, on the western edge of modern Siracusa, visit the Archaeological Park of Neapolis, the other UNESCO protected area in Siracusa.  The Greek Theatre ’s current appearance is from the 3 rd century BCE but parts were carved out of rock in the 5th century BCE.  It is used now for performances.  Fairly nearby find the Roman Amphitheatre , thought to be from the 1 st or 2 nd century BCE, where gladiatorial combat and horse races were held.

An aerial view of the ancient Roman amphitheater in Siracusa Sicily

Wander through the quarries at the north end of the park which were the source for the limestone for many of Siracusa’s buildings. Saltpetre, used in the production of gunpowder, was also mined here.  One of the resulting caves is called the Ear of Dionysius .  Its acoustic properties were so sensitive that Dionysius, a tyrant of Siracusa, is said to have used it to eavesdrop on the prisoners he held there.

The town of Noto is the next stop on our road trip route and the first of the UNESCO Baroque towns we visit.

This hilltop town’s magnificent Baroque architecture is on display on a walk down the main street, Corso Vittorio Emanuele , past a blend of palaces and churches.

The star of the show is the Noto Cathedral (Cathedral of San Nicolo) and the beautiful Paolo Labisi staircase to its front door.  It was built in the early 18th century after the 1693 earthquake.  In 1996, its dome collapsed forcing extensive renovation in the early 21 st century and refocusing attention on the need to preserve the buildings of Noto.

Piazza del Duomo , in front of the church, is the main plaza of the reconstructed 18 th -century town.  Noto’s town hall, in the Baroque Palazzo Ducezio, is directly opposite.

An aerial view of Noto Cathedral, huge staircase and city around it.

Don’t miss the Church of Saint Clare (Chiesa di Santa Chiara) a block east.  Its entrance is tucked away on a side street.  The elaborate Baroque interior decorations are stunning. Find the 16th-century statue of the Madonna and Child. We visited the roof for a bird’s eye view of the Baroque town centre.

Similarly, the bell tower of St. Charles Church (Chiesa di San Carlo), on the west side of the cathedral, provides an impressive view.

Theatre lovers shouldn’t miss the Tina Di Lorenzo Municipal Theatre (Teatro Tina Di Lorenzo). The 19th-century theatre has a stunning, curved facade and opulent interior.

Enjoy strolling Noto’s pedestrianized streets, lined with wrought-iron balconies and intricately carved doorways.  It’s like stepping into a work of art.

Between Noto and Modica, the next rebuilt Baroque town on our road trip, enjoy a detour to the archaeological site of a Roman villa on the bank of the Tellaro river.  Discovered by accident in the early 1970s, the floors of the Roman Villa of Tellaro are decorated with mosaics dated to the mid-4 th century CE.  Full mosaic floors were discovered in some of the rooms.

A person standing above a mosaic floor at Roman Villa of Tellaro Sicily

The town of Modica, a powerful town in the 14 th century, covers both sides of a deep gorge.  The 1693 earthquake damaged buildings.  The town’s nobility ensured that many were rebuilt in the new Sicilian Baroque style.

Discover beautiful churches, taste world-famous chocolate and experience authentic Sicilian traditions in this unforgettable town with layers of history and culture.

Modica’s highlights are throughout the town on winding, cobblestone streets.  Its centerpiece is the San Giorgio Cathedral (Duomo di San Giorgio) at the top of a 250-step, 19 th -century staircase.  The butter-coloured church was reopened in 1738 after its reconstruction.  The interior has ornate altars, vivid frescoes, and 22 columns with Corinthian capitals.   Visit at noon to see the floor sundial in action.

Andy standing in front of the green facade of Antica Dolceria Bonajuto chocolate store.

Wander the old town’s narrow streets along the hillside which are often connected by staircases.  Discover more architectural gems in numerous palaces and churches.  The impressive Church of Saint Peter (Chiesa di San Pietro), also damaged in the earthquake, was rebuilt over the next two centuries.  Life-sized statues of the Apostles line the staircase to the church.   Inside, its domed ceilings are covered in glittering mosaics.

Modica is famous for its chocolate making.  The method of cold processing cocoa was likely introduced after the Spanish conquest of Sicily in the 1500s. Visit Antica Dolceria Bonajuto , the oldest and most famous chocolate producer in town, to taste their decadent chocolate creations handmade in antique copper vats.  Learn about chocolate’s history at the Chocolate Museum of Modica (Museo del Cioccolato di Modica).

Our road trip continues through lovely southeastern Sicily to Scicli, another UNESCO protected Baroque town of the Noto valley.

This pretty place is a bit off the typical tourist route.  We found it quieter and more relaxed.

Explore Scicli’s historic centre on Via Francesco Mormino Penna . Walk past a couple pretty churches and attractive palaces-turned-museums, cafes, restaurants and small shops. We went into the Church of Saint John Evangelist (Chiesa di San Giovanni Evangelista).  Nearby Piazza Italia hosts Scicli’s lively morning fruit and vegetable market.

Val standing on a cobbled street in old town Scicli.

From the square, we walked uphill into a maze of quiet backstreets showing everyday Sicilian life.  We climbed to the abandoned Church of Saint Matthew (Chiesa di San Matteo) perched above the town.  The terrace offers breathtaking views over Scicli’s red-tiled rooftops.

Continuing west, Ragusa is another rebuilt Baroque town on our road trip.

A town has existed on the hillside here for centuries.  After the hillside collapsed in the earthquake, Ragusa Superiore was built on the plateau above the destroyed town.  Some residents rebuilt in the new town, but many of the aristocracy stayed and rebuilt on top of the old town, now Ragusa Ibla .

Enjoy the winding cobblestone streets, alleys and grand staircases of Lower Ragusa.  We walked through the lovely, 18th-century Giardino Ibleo , a public garden with beautiful views over the valley below.

The St. George Gate (Portale di San Giorgio), all that is left of a 14 th -century Gothic church destroyed in the earthquake, is the beginning of the Corso XXV Aprile .  This pedestrian zone and the Piazza Duomo come alive when residents fill the streets for their evening stroll, the passeggiata.

Val standing in Cathedral of Saint George Ragusa Sicily.

Towering over the square is the magnificent Cathedral of Saint George (Duomo di San Giorgia), built in the mid-18th century.  See its beautiful dome, stained glass windows, and tall, central bell tower.

A walk between the two towns offers stunning valley views and a true sense of the area’s geographic setting.   Holy Souls in Purgatory Church (Chiesa delle Santissime Anime del Purgatorio) is on the western end of Lower Ragusa.  Climb the stairs at Via Gusti to St. Mary of the Stairs Church (Chiesa di Santa Maria delle Scale) in Upper Ragusa.  The view below of the lower town is worth the climb.  Both churches survived the earthquake and were updated to the new Baroque style of architecture in the 18 th century.

For those wanting more Baroque towns to explore, Caltagirone , is on route.  Enjoy the Sicilian countryside as you continue west to the next stop, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a roman villa south of the town of Piazza Armerina .

Villa Romana del Casale

Step back in time and learn about the opulent lifestyle of the Roman nobility and the site of one of the world’s largest collections of Roman mosaics.

Most of the Villa Romana del Casale was built in the 4th century CE above an older structure, eventually becoming the centre of a large settlement which was destroyed in the 12th century.  Repeated floods drowned the villa in mud and water and all evidence of it was lost.  Some of the ruins were discovered in the 19 th century including parts of the mosaic floors.  Concerted efforts to preserve the mosaic tile floors, found in almost every room, began in the 1950s and continue to the present.

Long corridor's floor of mosaic tiles Villa Romana del Casale

Enter the ruins at the peristyle courtyard , a large area with the roof supported by columns.  The complex, with over 3000 square metres of multi-coloured mosaic floors spread over 40 rooms, unfolds from here. See mosaics depicting lively scenes of mythology, daily life, sports and hunting.

The vivid Ambulatory of the Big Game Hunt shows wild, exotic animals being captured and transported for Roman spectacles.  The display fills the entire room which is about 60 metres long.  Nearby, mosaics commonly called the “bikini girls” show athletes practising various sports.

Stay in Piazza Armerina if you are arriving toward the end of the day.  The Cathedral of Saint Mary ‘delle Vittorie’ is beautiful.  The view of the valley from the pretty street plaza is stunning.

The interior of Piazza Amerina Cathedral with dome and an ornate ceiling.

The road trip route turns south toward the coast to the city of Agrigento.  Visit the Valley of the Temples, Sicily’s top ancient Greek site with stunning temple ruins.

Valley of the Temples

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the world’s largest archeological sites.

The Valley of the Temples Archaeological Park includes the temple ruins on the hill as well as the Garden of Kolymbethra . The garden is vast, filled with orchards, olive groves, vineyards and many species of trees and shrubs within the valley both to the north and the southeast.  The entire area was the site of the city of Akragas.

Many people standing in front of the Temple of Concordia Sicily.

The sturdy columns of the Temple of Juno stand tall on the highest point on the hill overlooking the valley. Nearby, the Temple of Concordia is one of best preserved Greek temples in the world (and the model for UNESCO’s logo). Both temples were built between 430 BC and 435 BC. The Temple of Hercules is the oldest, dating from 6th century BC.  Only eight of its columns remain standing.

Wander among the columns and foundations of these temples and others built over 24 centuries ago.  Climb the slopes for panoramic views over the entire archaeological park. The Valley’s excellent Archaeological Museum displays artifacts found at the temples and provides background on their historical significance.

After exploring the Valley of the Temples, Agrigento is a good place to relax and spend the night.

Andy sitting at a table with a cup of coffee in Agrigento Sicily.

One of Sicily’s busier, modern cities, Agrigento’s medieval centre is the perfect place to spend the evening.

The main thoroughfare, Via Atenea, is a pleasant pedestrian street lined with graceful medieval and Baroque buildings.  It runs between Piazza Luigi Pirandello and Porta Di Ponte, the bridge gate.  Historic palaces hold shops, cafes and restaurants.  Lovely churches, like the 17 th century San Lorenzo Church , are a pretty backdrop for the cafes in the squares.

The undisputed highlight of Agrigento is the majestic Cathedral Basilica of San Gerlando . The first church was built on the site in the 11th century.  Over the centuries it has been remodeled over and over again in a mix of styles.

Stairs with potted plants in front of them lead to Agrigento Cathedral.

From Agrigento, the road trip route splits.  For those on the shorter road trips, your road trips continue north from Agrigento toward Monreale and Palermo .

Otherwise the full road trip continues west.

Make a brief stop at Scala dei Turchi (Stair of the Turks) to stretch.  This is a stunning, white, cliff formation on the southern coast. After it is on to the ancient Greek city of Selinunte. Built around 630 BCE, ruins sit on a rocky outcrop above the sea.

Andy and Val taking a selfie on a cliff overlooking the Scala dei Turchi and Mediterranean Sea.

The ruins of Selinunte, on Sicily’s southwest coast, are part of one of the largest archaeological sites in the Mediterranean.  The main attractions are the Acropolis , on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean and the inland Eastern Hill .

The layout of the main and secondary roads of the hilltop Acropolis is still clear.  There are a number of temple ruins, many just a jumble of broken columns.  The area is surrounded by huge stone walls which acted as fortifications.  Temple C , the oldest in the Acropolis, was constructed about 550 BCE to the God Apollo.  Of the original 17 columns along the north side, 14 are standing today.

On the Eastern Hill, there are three temples, E, F and G.  Temple E was built around 450 BCE to either the God Hera or Aphrodite.  It has been partially rebuilt.

Val standing in front of a large group of pillars of Tempe E at Selinunte Sicily

From the tops of the hills, enjoy panoramic views over the ruins, the sparkling Mediterranean and the river valley. The sheer size and detailed stonework of the temples hint at Selinunte’s power and wealth in the ancient world before its destruction by the Carthaginians in 409BCE.  After an attempt at an alliance failed, the city was never fully inhabited again.

Our road trip continues to the west coast of Sicily and the port of Trapani.

If you make your way along the south coast, stop in the city which is famous for its sweet dessert wines, Marsala . One of the city gates still stands, Porta Nuova.  Stretch your legs and walk the marble street, Via XI Maggio, to the Parish Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury.  It is in a pretty square with city hall opposite.

The lively, west coast, city of Trapani offers a blend of history, culture and natural beauty.  Wander the historic centre and see elegant churches around every corner.  From the statue of Garibaldi in Piazza Garibaldi , walk a block to St. Francis of Assisi Street.  A block to the left is the 18 th -century, Baroque Church of the Holy Souls of Purgatory (Chiesa Anime Sante del Purgatorio).  The church was severely damaged in World War II.  Twenty life-sized wooden representations of the Passion of Christ, carried in procession on Good Friday, have been housed in the church since 1960.

Two blocks north is the massive Trapani Cathedral , also called the Basilica Cathedral of St. Lawrence the Martyr (Basilica cattedrale di San Lorenzo martire).  The church, with its stunning dome and bell tower, was built in the 15 th century and restored in the 18 th -century.

Several statues of Jesus during the Passion of Christ stored in Trapani church.

Stroll Trapani’s harbour promenade and explore the outdoor fish market .  See the day’s catch on colourful display, often on the back of the boat the fish was caught on.  Watch and listen to the vibrant banter of bartering often between fishermen and restaurant owners.  Regular citizens get in on the act too.

Just outside the city to the south, visit the Salt Pans of Trapani and Paceco (Saline di Trapani e Paceco), a protected area of wetlands and salt ponds. The salt, produced here for centuries, was considered the finest in Italy.  Artisanal producers are the only ones working the salt pans now.  Before leaving the area, don’t miss Trapani’s famous local delicacy, pesto alla trapanese, the Sicilian version of the well-known basil-pine-nut pesto.  In Trapani, the nuts are almonds and tomatoes and garlic add even more flavour.

North of Trapani, at the top of Mt. Erzy, sits Erice at an elevation of 750 metres.  If overnighting in Trapani, consider taking the cable car from Trapani to Erice to avoid driving the zigzag route up and down the mountain.

Walk the peaceful, cobblestone streets and alleys of the medieval, hilltop town of Erice lined with Gothic palaces and churches.  Enjoy its well-preserved historic character.

The Mother Church, St Mary of the Assumption (Chiesa di santa Maria Assunta – Chiesa Madre) is near the Trapani Gate at the southwest corner of Erice.  The Gothic church was built in 1314 by King Frederick III.  Inside, a museum displays religious artwork and sacramental silverware from the 15th- and 16th-century.  Next door is the cathedral’s freestanding bell tower (Torre di Federico). Climb the 108 steps of the spiral staircase to the top of the 28-metre tower for spectacular views over the rooftops of town.

Andy walking a cobblestone street with colourful rugs hung outside Erice shop.

Walk uphill the full length of Viale Conte Pepoli to the southeast corner of town and Erice’s highest point.  This is the site of the legendary Venus Castle (Castello di Venere). The castle was built by the Normans, over the ruins of the 7 th -century BCE Temple of Venus. It offers panoramic views over the countryside and sea below. Don’t miss the English Gardens of Balio next to the castle.

Throughout town, enjoy stopping to sample fresh homemade cookies, cakes and gelatos from local pasticcerias. Erice is renowned for its sweets and pastries.

The next road trip stop is less than an hour away.

The highlights of the Segesta Archaeological Park are two ruins which are all that remains of the ancient city of Segesta.  New excavations are finding evidence of later occupation of the area by different cultures.

From the entrance, walk uphill a short distance.  The majestic Temple of Segesta , (Tempio di Segesta), sits at the edge of the hill.  The incredible Doric temple, built by the indigenous Elymians, in the mid-5 th century BCE, was never completed.  All 36 of its columns are still standing today (6 on the short side and 14 on the long) remarkably preserved.  Some say they sing on windy days.

A short shuttle ride away is the Theatre of Segesta , (Teatro di Segesta), believed to be from the 2 nd century BCE.  Carved into the side of Mount Barbaro, its tiered, stone seats overlook a peaceful, green valley.  The bulk of the ancient city of Segesta was on top of Mount Barbaro.  Climbing to the top reveals a sprawling view over the entire complex and rolling landscapes beyond. Modern theatre performances were first held in the theatre in 1957 and have been held sporadically since.

The ruins of an ancient amphitheatre built on a hilltop at Segesta Sicily.

The theatre and temple’s remarkable state of preservation and the stunning views of the area, make this a must-visit destination.

Our road trip moves from Sicily’s west coast to the north coast.  The next three stops on our road trip are home to beautiful structures, recognized by UNESCO and highlighting the successful blending of Western, Islamic, and Byzantine cultures.

Palermo, a city over 2700 years old, is the first of the three.

The capital of Sicily, Palermo rewards visitors with a vibrant mix of culture, cuisine and history.  Its seven UNESCO-designated sites include the Palermo Cathedral, the Church of San Cataldo, the Norman Palace with its popular Palatine Chapel, two more churches, a palace and a bridge.  All are worth a look as you explore the streets of Palermo.

The interior view of elaborately ornate Palermo church with people sitting in the pews.

The Palermo Cathedral (Cattedrale di Palermo) is a must-see and a great place to start a walking tour of the city.  Its unique Arab-Norman architectural style is still visible after numerous reconstructions over centuries. Inside, don’t miss the royal Norman tombs and crypts containing sarcophagi dating back to the Roman era. For sweeping city views, climb to the cathedral’s roof terrace.  The Norman Palace (Palazzo dei Normanni) is about a 2 minute walk to the southwest.

Spend time getting lost in the maze-like Ballarò Market (Mercato di Ballarò) which covers several blocks.  The oldest and most authentic of Palermo’s street markets, it is a mix of noises, smells and lively street life.  It is always busy and overflows with fresh produce, cheese, meat and seafood.

A man is grilling meat on a barbecque grill while another fans the coals.

The UNESCO-protected San Cataldo Church (Chiesa di San Cataldo) is close to the heart of the historic city.  The area is full of stunning buildings and fountains.  12 th -century San Cataldo is an iconic Palermo landmark with its three red domes and square blocky shape, blending Arab and Norman architectural styles.

As the sun sets, join the locals on their evening passeggiata along the new waterfront promenade of Foro Italico Umberto I .

To see all of highlights of Palermo, including the UNESCO churches and bustling markets, check out our detailed article, One Day in Palermo – A Free Walking Tour Itinerary .

The word Palermo is added on top of the picture of the front of the ornate Church of St. Mary of the Admiral and Church of San Cataldo.

The hilltop town of Monreale is just southwest of Palermo.

Inside the UNESCO-designated Cathedral of Monreale , one of Sicily’s greatest artistic treasures, nearly 6500 square meters of shimmering Byzantine mosaics cover the walls and ceilings. Biblical scenes, saints and angels are depicted in glittering, golden detail.

Next to the cathedral sits the peaceful Benedictine Cloister with over 200 twinned, marble columns surrounding a lush courtyard filled with a beautiful garden. We also climbed up to the Cathedral Roof Terrace for some great panoramic views.  The cathedral complex was commissioned by William II in an effort to outdo his grandfather Roger II who was responsible for the Cefalu Cathedral and the Palatine Chapel in Palermo.

A woman is sitting on the mosaic floor of Monreale's cathedral.

After visiting the cathedral complex, explore Monreale’s small town centre. Stroll down Via Roma , stopping for a coffee or granita in one of the cozy cafes. The pedestrian-friendly streets showcase Monreale’s laid-back vibe and friendly local community.  The town makes an easy and rewarding day trip from Palermo.

Our road trip moves to the seaside of Sicily’s beautiful north coast.

The picturesque seaside town of Cefalù, midway along Sicily’s northern coast, combines a historic medieval centre, long sandy beach, and dramatic rocky coastline. Begin at the crescent-shaped Cefalù beach and old port with views of the massive headland Rock of Cefalù towering over the town. Relax on the beach or at one of the lounge bars before strolling along the beach promenade.

Explore the medieval centre of Cefalù, with its winding streets full of restaurants and boutiques.  Walk the main street Corso Ruggero past historic palazzos, churches and shops to reach the UNESCO-listed Cathedral of Cefalù .  Dating to 1131 CE, this impressive, Norman cathedral has elaborate, Byzantine mosaics covering its apse and a huge figure of Christ.

Several boats on a beach with Cefalu Sicily and hills in background.

Continue uphill, past sleepy piazzas and artisan workshops to reach the base of the rocky outcrop known as the Rock of Cefalù .  Climb the Salita Saraceni, a switchbacking staircase through the city walls up the craggy peninsula.  At the summit, find the ruins of an Arab fortress, a Norman castle and 4 th -century BCE temple.  Enjoy panoramic views along the coastline and back to Cefalù’s red-roofed old town below. The staircase may be closed in poor weather (as it was during our visit).

In the evening, enjoy the town’s lively bars and trattorias abuzz with local families and couples enjoying the passeggiata.

The next stop on the 10-day road trip is Taormina . For those on the full tour, continue to Milazzo, the perfect place to overnight before heading to our next stop, the Aeolian Islands, off Sicily’s northeast coast.  Ferries run frequently between the islands and Milazzo, on the mainland.

Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands offer stunning volcanic scenery, picturesque villages, and tranquil beaches. The seven inhabited islands are part of a 200-kilometre long volcanic ridge between the active volcanos Etna (Sicily) and Vesuvius (Naples Italy). Enjoy a great day trip to one of the three largest islands: Stromboli, Volcano or Lipari.  Two of these (Stromboli, Volcano) are active volcanos.

The island of Stromboli is one of the most active volcanos in the world.  Access is regulated, typically by organized hikes, which are a demanding 5 to 6 hours round trip.  Alternatively, enjoy an hour-long, self-guided hike to a lookout at the 400-metre level.

Most of Vulcano ’s activity is sulphurous steam being emitted from vents along the crater.  We hiked to its steaming Gran Cratere at the top for views of the whole island and nearby islets. Down below, soak in the healing sulphuric mud baths near the port of Levante (where the ferry arrives).  During our visit the mud baths were closed.  Travel a bit further to the small beach Spiaggia delle Acque Calde. Enjoy the natural “hot tubs” at the edge of the beach.

Vulcano Sicily's volcanic crater with steam flowing from its edge.

The island of Lipari provides a perfect base for longer stays or a great place to spend a couple hours.  While it is an active volcano, Lipari’s last eruption was in the 13 th century. Enjoy this colourful harbour town lined with pastel buildings, lively cafes and shops. Explore the excellent Archaeological Museum to learn about the islands’ ancient history. The museum is a complex of buildings, including the Lipari Castle, Basilica of Saint Bartholomew, several churches and an amphitheatre. Take a boat trip around Lipari to admire the rugged coastline punctuated by obsidian cliffs.

Andy walking down a cobblestone street with yellow buildings in Lipari Sicily.

Enjoy the drive along the north coast to the resort town of Taormina on Sicily’s east coast.

The hilltop town of Taormina was founded in 4 th -century BCE.  Discovered by wealthy northern Europeans in the 18 th century, it is now a very popular summer destination.

Stroll along the lively pedestrian street Corso Umberto I .  Along the way, explore the pretty squares and their churches, flower stalls, restaurants and lively outdoor cafes.  Many of the shops and cafes are in historic palazzos. It is about 800 metres from Porta Catania (on the west side) to Porta Messina (on the east).

In Piazza Duomo, see the ornate, baroque fountain and the impressive 13 th -century Cathedral of Taormina with its mix of architectural styles. See the delicate rose window.

People in Piazza IX Aprile watching street musicians in front of a Taormina church.

The Church of San Giuseppe anchors the pretty Piazza IX Aprile , Taormina’s lively hub. Grab a table at one of the piazza’s cafes for excellent people watching while admiring panoramic views of the ocean and Mount Etna. Don’t miss wandering through the flower-filled public gardens a short walk to the southeast.

Near Porta Messina at the east end of Corso Umbretto, turn south and walk to the end of Via Teatro Greco.  The Ancient Theater of Taormina (Teatro Antico di Taormina), built by the Greeks in the 3 rd century, was remodeled by the Romans.  It is still used today.

If time permits, take a walk along the beach to see the nearby rocky island, Isola Bella .

On the east coast of Sicily, the next stop on our road trip is the tallest Italian mountain south of the Alps and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mount Etna.  This is the last road trip stop for those on the 7-day tour.

A trip to Sicily is not complete, without a visit to Mount Etna.  Etna is one of the world’s most active volcanoes, in an almost constant state of activity, though typically not explosive activity.  The volcano has 4 summit craters plus fissures and old craters on its flanks.  There is an excellent infrastructure system to get visitors as close to the top as possible, regardless of physical abilities.

The best access point is on the south side of Etna.  Drive to the Base Station at 1900 metres elevation. From here, take the cable car up to Top Station at 2500 metres.  Enjoy the Etna Cable Car Bar and check out the gift shop.  From here, there are options regarding the next stage of the climb to the authorized viewpoint areas nearer the craters.

Andy standing in front of a snow covered Mount Etna volcano.

From Top Station, hike up to the authorized viewpoint areas or ride up in a 4×4 minibus shuttle . A 40-minute guided hike to the highest accessible point is included with the shuttle ride.  Weather quickly changes on Etna.  In our short stay up top, Etna was visible and invisible a number of times.  Viewpoints change depending on Etna’s activity levels to ensure that visitors are always safe.

When you return to the Base Station, check out the old craters on Etna’s lower flanks.  We hiked the Goat Climb, to see its massive crater

Our final road trip stop and the last of the Noto Valley Baroque towns recognized by UNESCO is the port city of Catania, on Sicily’s east coast.

This lively town reveals its long history through magnificent monuments.  The best way to explore the city is on foot starting at its expansive main square, Piazza del Duomo. This is the centre of old Catania, rebuilt in the local Baroque style after the earthquake of 1693.  In the square is the 18 th -century Elephant Fountain (Fontana dell’Elefante), built around a smiling black-lava elephant.

The square is dominated by the grand Baroque facade of Catania Cathedral (Basilica Cattedrale di Sant’Agata) built of black rock and trimmed with white limestone. This 18 th -century church honours the city’s patron saint, Agatha, with ornate silver busts and crypt.  The church was originally a Norman fortress church. Most of it was destroyed in the earthquake and rebuilt in the Baroque style.  The Abby Church of Sainte Agatha sits to the north.  Climb to the rooftop terrace for great views of city.

A group of people walking in front of Baroque Palermo Cathedral.

Steps away, stroll through Catania’s enormous daily fish market (La Pescheria di Catania).  Fish have been sold here, every workday morning, for over 1000 years.  Vendors loudly hawk the catch of the day, from swordfish to sardines, in a riot of sights and smells. Nearby, the central food market and produce stalls overflow with local fruits, cheeses, and spices.  This is a great place to grab a bite to eat.

Evidence of Catania’s past as an ancient Greek colony appears periodically throughout the historic centre. The best example is the well-preserved Ancient Greek-Roman Theatre (Teatro Antico greco-romano) from the 2nd century BCE.  It was buried under lava and residential apartments were built over top.  Archaeological excavations eventually removed the majority of the apartments but some still remain.  What an interesting view they have.

In the evening, join locals on a stroll along bustling Via Etnea with its chic shops and cafes.

Know Before You Go – Travelling to Sicily

Driving in sicily.

The best way to see Sicily is by car.  While public transport is available to many of the places in these Sicily itineraries, some are inaccessible without a car.  The best and easiest way to see everything is to rent a car.

You can easily pick up a rental car when you fly into the airports in either Palermo or Catania.

Be aware that car rental costs in Sicily do seem higher than in other parts of Europe.  I’m not sure of the reason for this.  Some say that the local driving culture tends to be more ‘aggressive’, hence resulting in more fender benders which drive insurance costs up.  I’m not sure if this is the reason for the higher costs, but I can attest to the fact that drivers in Sicily were much more aggressive than I’ve experienced elsewhere.

In any case, car rental is definitely the best way to make sure you don’t miss anything when travelling in Sicily.

Best Time to Visit Sicily

The best time to visit Sicily is in the shoulder seasons of Spring and Autumn .  There are fewer tourists and visiting is more enjoyable.

During the summer, the temperatures can surge up to 38°Cs. The popular attractions become even more crowded.

We visited in April and had lots of sunny days and pleasant temperatures.  There was hardly any rain.  Accommodations were plentiful and relatively cheap.

Day 1 Benvenuti to Sicily. Welcome Meeting in Noto.

Arrive at Catania Airport and transfer to Noto on your own. Meet & Greet with BTS local representative. Noto is the capital of Sicilian Baroque and a living art gallery. Noto, along with every other city in the area, was completely razed by a devastating earthquake in 1693. Its noble aristocracy decided to rebuild the city stone‐for‐stone, 3 km from its original site. If you have enough time on your holidays, we strongly suggest to visit Siracusa, not far from Noto. We can include your extra nights and transfer arrangements under request. Welcome meeting with local BTS representative at your first hotel, set in the old town.

Day 2 Noto Loop & the Barocco Siciliano. 42 or 73km / 26 or 45mi. Rolling hills

Loop Bike ride from Noto to the coastline and cycling through the inland. Today you have two options to ride around Noto. You will ride into the verdant Val di Noto with its flourishing almond and olive groves and discover its caves carved into rock. Climb past Castelluccio and up to the coastal plateau to take in hypnotic views of the Mediterranean, then descend into Noto: the Baroque city. In town, you can taste the local granita. A more challenging ride: Hop on your bike and pedal up a difficult climb to Avola Antica and “Cavagrande del Cassibile nature reserve”. Here the landscape begins to change from the norm and the view is now dominated by “Sicily’s Grand Canyon,” the deepest canyon in Europe, whose steep walls descend 800 feet to a picturesque river below. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 3 Noto to Portopalo di Capo Passero. 35 or 72 km / 21 or 45 mi. Rolling hills or hilly

Today, your destination is the Southernmost point of Sicily and Italy, more precisely, Portopalo di Capo Passero, an old fishermen village. A distance of 11 km from Noto on the route, there is the Roman Villa Tellaro, a 4th century, partially‐excavated palace, boasting magnificent mosaic floors which tell stories of Roman life. Scenes of hunting, erotic dances, Illiad tales, an unusual geometric designs. A visit to Villa Tellaro cannot be missed. You set off again towards the marvellous Vendicari Nature Reserve. A visit here may only be done on foot if one wishes to enter. Then, ride further on through Contrada Buonivini, the cradle of Nero d’Avola. Just few more kilometers and you reach Portopalo with its nice beaches and an important fishing port. Here you can taste the best local and fresh fish! We suggest to visit the village. Walk along the pedestrian central area containing popular restaurants, cafés and boutiques. The views from here welcome you to its beach and clear waters. Additional views of an ancient tuna factory and the small island of Capo Passero with its fishermen houses are also spectacular. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 4 Portopalo to Modica. 56 or 76 km / 34 or 47 mi. Rolling hills to Hilly

Your ride today follows the cycle paths of wine country in Val di Noto, transitioning you through Notos countryside and cross Tellaro valley along the river. Once on top of the valley, the stunning view of the Hyblean Plateau will delight you. In this stage you will get acquainted with the varied food production of traditional peasant gourmet. Homemade breads to sauces, bio honey, cheese, olive oils and wines. From here is a lovely view of the extreme eastern spur of the Hyblean Mountains which form the border between Siracusa and Noto provinces. Here, the peaceful and quiet mule-track is shaded by the wide crowns of carob trees, allowing for cover while roaming for many cycling kilometers. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 5 Modica Loop to Ragusa. 45 or 64 km / 27 or 40mi. Downhill & flat.

This moderate challenging, rise and fall stage unrolls like a film of snapshots from the past: olive and carob trees, farmhouses and villas of the rural past aristocracy. The profile of the hilly area gradually changes its shape as we get further in a harmonious plateau area. You can enjoy the spectacular views of Tellaro valley from here. The section of the route with its continuous series of ups and downs is quite demanding, but your effort will be rewarded by views of unequalled beauty at each turn or hilltop. You arrive in the magnificent Baroque city of Ragusa, where you can visit the awesome Iblean Garden by foot and the Old Town, called IBLA; here you will find a lot of churches, gelaterias and street food shops. Then we will loop back to Modica for the rest of the ride. For dinner, choose from many wonderful local restaurants such as hole‐in‐the‐wall trattorias to Slow Food and Michelin‐starred restaurants. (we’ll give you some favorite suggestions) Meals included: Breakfast

Day 6 Modica to Donnalucata. 37 or 65 km / 22 or 40 mi. Flat terrain or rolling hills

Today you leave Modica going on through the Fiumara Valley, surrounded by a lush vegetation: this wild wooded part of the route will lead you straight to Scicli’s historic center. Starting out, you go along the ancient street leading from Scicli to Donnalucata, stretching above a typical Iblean cave. After about 4 km you will reach a panoramic street hanging between countryside and sea; here you meet the Sgarlata farmhouse, renowned for its ricotta cheese and delicious flavored caciotte (you can experience a cheese-making laboratory and a tasting under request). Here you can also find the Milizie cloister, legendary battle ground between the Normans and Saracens. Further on, the cycling path goes on plunging in between olive, carob and almond orchards. Finally you arrive to the sea and in Donnalucata, you will be ready for a rewarding Italian Gelato. Also in front of the sea, a fantastic dinner awaits for you, in a romantic place. Meals included: Breakfast

Day 7 Arrivederci! Good bye!

After breakfast, end of tour. Transfer to the train station or to Catania or Comiso Airports is available. under request Meals included: Breakfast

Scintillating Sicily! We have just returned from a wonderful week’s cycling holiday with “Bike Tours Sardinia”. The accommodations lived up to their 4 star rating. Mauro and Raffaele’s e-bikes performed without missing a beat and the ride with gps app was fantastic as were the trip notes. The Sicilians proved without exception to be helpful and charming and in the majority of cases going over and beyond to ensure our trip was memorable. Our outstanding hostess of the week was undeniably Sonya of the Portopalo Suites Hotel with her warm and enthusiastic welcome and her marvellous send-off! Thank you “Bike Tours Sardinia” – we hope to be back!

Superb Sicilian tour Having had a brilliant week with Mauro in Sardinia last year, eight of us opted for his Sicilian trip, a week on ebikes in the South East of the island. It was regarded by all as the best cycling holiday we have ever had. Mauro takes great trouble, as does his Sicilian colleague, Raffaele. Everything was thus really good: itinerary, support, quality of bikes and accommodation, ideas about food and visits, responsiveness to any questions. We look forward very much to our next trip with Mauro and Bike Tour Sardinia.

You will be met at Catania airport and transferred (approx 1.5 hours) to your accommodation in the charming town of Palazzolo Acreide.

Palazzolo Acreide is an ancient town that was once the Greek city of Akrai. The town was rebuilt in 1693, and offers the perfect start to your tour of Baroque Sicily. After your briefing with our Sicilian rep, going through the route notes and providing you with useful tips;,the remainder of the day can be spent visiting the town of Palazzolo Acreide on foot, exploring the winding lanes of the medieval part of town. Famed for its Baroque architecture, the town is jam-packed with unmissable sights, like its Basilica of San Paolo and the Basilica of San Sebastiano, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

sicily self guided tour

  • Meals: Breakfast
  • Ascent: 600 Metres Approx.

Grabbing your bikes, you’ll say ciao to Palazzolo Acreide. You have the option to first cycle to the Greek archaeological site of Akrai. Here take the opportunity to discover the ancient ruins, where you’ll find a Greek Theatre. The surrounding view of the Hybleaen mountains is stunning!

Getting back on your bikes, you’ll cycle through Hyblaean territory to the hill-top city of Ragusa Ibla, making your way past ancient dry stone walls, through valleys with lush Mediterranean vegetation. Ragusa Ibla is not only another Baroque jem, but it was part of the film setting in the popular Inspector Montalbano’s TV series.

The last section of your ride will offer up an awe-inspiring descent into Modica, your destination for the evening. Modica, a UNESCO-listed city, sits majestically in a valley and is famed for its Duomo of St Giorgio which is well worth a visit.

sicily self guided tour

  • Ascent: 400 Metres Approx.

Before heading away from Modica, we recommend a visit to the town’s famous Cioccolateria, to sample the famous chocoloate (Cioccolato di Modica), often described as the best Italian chocolate. Your ride will begin with a downhill stretch as you make your way to the charming town of Scicli. You’ll cycle through a fertile valley, with small quaint farm holds, carob and pomegranate plantations and small reservoirs, all with a back drop of terraced hills. In Scicili, take some time to explore the town and the enchanting Saint Bartholomew’s Church, which looks out over a rocky landscape of ever-changing colours. Wander its atmospheric streets, including Via Mormino Penna. It’s also worth visiting the town’s main square, Piazza Italia, which offer the perfect place to stop for a coffee and watch the world go by.

Jumping back on your bikes, you’ll pedal towards the Sicilian coast, riding past agricultural plots and scattered houses as you head to your destination for the evening; Pozzallo. Once on the coast, you’ll ride past long sandy beaches and the picturesque fishing hamlet of Sampieri (another Montalbano filming location). Your destination for the day, Pozzallo, is a town that’s famed for its clean beaches and crystal-clear water, offering the perfect end to a day of cycling.

  • Ascent: 300 Metres Approx.

Your ride this morning will see you enjoying the Mediterranean coastal road to Capo Passero. The road will take you past vibrant waters and sandy beaches. As sections lead you inland, the riding will take you past marshland and lagoons, with a wide variety of bird life, such as herons, flamingos and storks. As you get closer to Capo Passero, the route will take you along tomato farm land, (now you know where your delicious sun ripened Sicilian tomatoes come from!)

Reaching the most southern point, facing the Isola delle Correnti, is going to be the highlight of the day. This is where the two seas, Ionian and Tyrrhenian meet, hence the name, island of currents.

Nestled between the turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean, the island is considered to have one of the most beautiful beaches in Sicily, as well as an impressive lighthouse. Cycling further along the coastal route, scattered with rustic Sicilian houses, you’ll ride through Portopalo di Capo Passero. Following the coast northwards, you’ll reach the quaint Marzamemi fishing hamlet with its colourful fishing boats moored up near the old fishermen’s houses. Marzamemi has an ancient tradition of Tuna fishing, still alive, and it’s here that you can taste some delicious products from the sea, such as Tuna Roe, smoked swordfish and marinated anchovies.

Leaving Marzamemi, you’ll ride past the untouched Vendicari Natural Oasis, an area of great historical and scientific interest, that’s bursting with flora and fauna. Leaving your bikes secured at the park entrance, you’ll discover the reserve on foot, walking past lagoons filled with bird life.

Leaving Vendicari, the riding picks up a little as you head for the characterful hill-top town of Noto, universally recognised as the Baroque capital city. Noto was completely rebuilt in the 17th Century, following an earthquake, taking on a whole new facade. Noto is a heady mix of opulent palaces and churches, juxtaposed with cosy courtyards. You’ll have the opportunity to explore this gorgeous town this evening, strolling down Corso Vittorio Emanuele with its imposing Cathedral, meandering the back streets lined with little restaurants and Pasticcerie. Enjoy indulging in some Sicilian specialties!

sicily self guided tour

  • Ascent: 200 or 650 Metres Approx.

Leaving Noto behind, you’ll begin your final day’s riding heading towards the coast through the wine region of Nero d‘Avola. The first section of the route will take you along quiet roads through cultivated orange groves and olive trees with the smells of Sicilian produce filling your senses.

In Avola you’ll be back on the coast, (how early is too early for a local wine tasting?)

Moving on, keeping the coast on your left, you’ll ride through scattered summer-holiday residences alternating with sections of rocky coastline and cultivated fertile fields. After reaching Capo Murro at the far end of a promontory, you’ll loop back, with views opening up to the imposing Siracusa and Ortigia coastal town across the bay.

You’ll soon arrive at your final stop, Siracusa, the capital of Magna Grecia. Leaving your bikes at your accommodation, you can discover Siracusa’s centre; Ortigia where you can lose yourself in the winding, narrow streets as you dip in and out of craft shops. There’s also a good selection of bars and restaurants, offering the perfect opportunity to enjoy some tasty local fayre!

Today you’ll be free to explore Siracusa at your leisure. It’s a city that has something for everyone, with lush citrus orchards, dazzling blue sea, classic Italian coffee shops and ancient Greek ruins! We recommend discovering the city’s rich past, which began when Corinthian colonists arrived in Sicily in 734 BC.

Must-see sights include the ruins of the Temple of Apollo, the Duomo (built on what was the Greek temple to Athena), and the Fountain of Arethusa. If you fancy a spot of shopping, you can head to the traditional Ortigia Market, held every morning (excl.Sunday) where you can sample delicious Sicilian citrus fruits, limoncello and fresh fish.

sicily self guided tour

Today you’ll say arrivederci to Sicilia, as it’s time to head to the airport for flights home (transfer time is approx. 60 minutes).

The Cycling

The tour alternates between countryside and coastal views. You’ll be riding primarily on well-paved roads, except for a few short sections of dirt road. You’ll initially be riding in the Hybleaen mountains, with a bias of gentle downwards cycling through beautiful valleys, except for short sections leading to towns or to visit monuments.

Once on the coast you will be riding in a region which combines long flat stretches with very gentle hills, passing promontories, lagoons, tomato farms and orange groves. Coastal roads will overlook long stretches of sandy beaches and remote coves, as well as riding through stretches of towns and coastal villages.

The roads generally have little traffic, except for short sections of the route where you’ll ride on main roads to link up minor routes, and when entering and exiting bigger towns.

We recommend a hybrid bike for this tour. Although there are no major elevations on this holiday, using an e-bike is a great idea if you’re wanting to take more time visiting destinations or for managing the heat during June and September. E-bikes are generally heavier than hybrid bikes, which is worth bearing in mind if needing to lift the bike up / down steps or over cobbles in some of the towns.

You may notice more rubbish / litter than in other regions in Italy. This unfortunately is a governmental, political issue and the tourism sector are working with the government to find a solution to get this tidied up. That being said, you may find some sections of the route are littered a little more than others.

Bike Tour Itinerary

Day 1: arrival in palermo | warm up ride.

Politeama Theater Palermo

The Kaleidoscopic Capital of the Med

Earliest recorded  human activity on the Island dates to 12,000 BC . Since then, Sicily has been ruled by Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Vandals, Ostrogoths, Turks, Arabs, Normans, Spanish, Austrians and finally Italians.  Each civilization left its mark , as we can still see today in the architectural facades and in the people features, and we’ll see it in the streets of  Palermo, considered the real capital of the whole Mediterranean . After the shuttle from airport, we’ll have time to check out our bikes and try them on a  warm up ride , then we’ll have an  aperitif with an extensive briefing about the Sicily bike tour, followed by our first sumptuous Sicilian dinner.

Overnight:  Palermo

Included:  Dinner

Day 2: Palermo to Trapani | Cycling 110Km/1800m

View of Trapani, an overnight in Sicily Bike Tour

Day 3: Trapani to Selinunte | Cycling 100Km/600m

The paradise of marsala vineyards.

Our day starts with a peaceful ride among the ancient salt works  shaping this coastline, with  scenic windmills emerging from the lagoons. Soon, our bike tour brings us to the grapes of luscious vineyards, the landmark of Marsala with its famous wine and historical cellars . We can visit a local winery, and of course, we’ll taste its most important product, the precious (and delightful) Marsala wine. At the exotic fisherman village of Mazara del Vallo, we’ll make time to visit its Kasbah district , a piece of the Arabic world nestled in a Sicilian town, and possibly its small museum hosting the statue of the “Dancing Satire” , a delightful art masterpiece  coming directly from Magna Grecia . Our day ends at the coast in Selinunte, where we’ll visit the majestic  Selinunte Temples  site.

Overnight:  Selinunte Included:  Breakfast

Day 4: Selinunte to Agrigento | Cycling 95Km/1200m

The stunning heritage of magna grecia.

Again along the coast, leaving  Sciacca and its scenic sea views , conquering the whole glory of this part of Magna Grecia in the Temples Valley of Agrigento. Today we’ll have also a taste of a very rural Sicily, while riding on the hills covered by the wonderful  orange groves of Ribera , producing the famous tasty oranges. Back on the coast, we’ll ride by one of the most known landmarks of Sicily, the popular “Scala dei Turchi” (Staircase of the Turks) , a rock formation resembling an enormous staircase. Agrigento offers some very good accommodations, some at the town centre perched over the valley, and the most exclusive ones immersed in one of the most spectacular settings in the world, the magnificent “Valle dei Templi”.

Day 5: Agrigento to Piazza Armerina | Cycling 100Km/1800m

The most elegant roman villa at the heart of rural sicily.

That’s the hardest stage of the bike tour across Sicily, climbing through the dry hills of inner Sicily  up to the old village of Piazza Armerina, hosting the amazing Villa Romana del Casale. We’ll experience a very rural Sicily, made out of solitary roads and sun-dried landscapes. Prepare yourself for  long yet steady climbs , spaced out by sporadic silent villages, pale yellow clay round hills covered with resilient olive oil groves, and emerald green vineyards. Mazzarino stands out with its Cannon-shaped Castle dominating the valley, a neat Baroque center, and some top-class pastry shops, a perfect spot for lunch. The last part of the stage goes across the old sulfur mines, well described by Verga, the writer who started the “Verismo” literary movement, vividly describing the hard life of its people. This austere landscape almost strikes with the absolute beauty of the enchanting mosaics of Villa Romana del Casale , one of the best-preserved buildings built by the Romans about 2000 years ago.  Piazza Armerina  is very scenic too,  with its baroque buildings and its cupola emerging from the old houses.

Day 6: Piazza Armerina to Ragusa | Cycling 90Km/1500m

The elegant baroque of ragusa ibla.

As we leave the lush gardens and orchards of Piazza Armerina, our bike tour will be again into the typical landscapes of inner Sicily, made out of bare hills drawn by fields and dry stone walls. Caltagirone is world-known for its refined pottery craftsmanship, sublimated in the beautiful  staircase of Santa Maria del Monte . Here, you could visit one of its many workshops, creating colorful crafts according to ancient tradition. Then we’ll cross olive groves and vineyards as far as the eye can see, along a rolling route taking us at the footsteps of the Ibleo limestone plateau. We’ll ascend through the characteristic white limestone walls, with breathtaking landscapes in the surrounding valley. The stage ends at one of the most magical places in Sicily: Ragusa Ibla, a marvelous city known worldwide. This place  will surprise you with its old town center and the quality of its cuisine , awarded with three Michelin-starred restaurants.

Overnight: Ragusa Included: Breakfast Dinner

Day 7: Ragusa to Noto via Modica | Cycling 100Km/1500m

Modica chocolate and flamboyant baroque.

Today, our bike tour across Sicily starts with a new ascent of the Iblei mountains, immersed in one of the most beautiful Sicilian countryside. It looks like riding along a terrace overlooking the valley. In  Modica, we’ll discover the ancient chocolate making tradition . We’ll visit the Bonajuto laboratory, one of the oldest chocolate makers in Italy, still using the ancient Aztec technique for their high-quality products. This place makes you feel like you are inside a tale, with so many chocolates of all shapes and colors. Scicli is an authentic Baroque gem still preserved and alive , described as one of the most fertile places of the Med by the famous Arabic explorer Muhammad al Idrisi back in the 12th century A.C. Then, our bike tour in Sicily takes us close to the Cava d’Ispica, a complex of grottos used as a cemetery since prehistory. Then, a long and gradual descent takes us to the perfumed citrus orchards of Noto Valley , preparing us for the last ascent of the day to the flamboyant baroque of Noto . Its Cathedral is one of the best symbols of baroque architecture in the world.

Overnight:  Noto Included:  Breakfast

Day 8: From Noto to Siracusa | Cycling 65Km/750m

Magnificent ortigia and its cathedral.

Today, we’ll conquer the sea bastions on the island of Ortigia, the ancient Greek settlement originating the most powerful Greek colony in the Mediterranean. Ortigia, in just a square kilometer, boasts several impressive buildings and monuments. Here stands out the wonderful Cathedral of Syracuse (Cathedral of the Nativity of Mary Most Holy). It was a Greek temple dedicated to Athena, then converted into a church by the Normans. Its Doric columns along the walls closing the side aisles are still very evident both inside and outside. An aperitif on the ancient walls, in front of the sunset over the sea, and a dinner in one of the several good restaurants in town will close the bike tour through southwestern Sicily.

Overnight: Siracusa Included: Breakfast

Day 9: Siracusa to Etna | Cycling 36Km/1200m

At the sight of his majesty the etna.

A 1 hr shuttle will take us to the  slopes of Mount Etna , the highest active Volcano in Europe. Starting from the village of Nicolosi, we’ll climb in this lava-brown rock landscape until the first caldera at Rifugio Sapienza. Our way down gives us stunning views over the strait of Messina and the Calabria on Italy’s mainland. Our goal is for the village of Zafferana Etnea, one of the best-preserved villages in the area , miraculously survived to so many eruptions during the centuries.

Overnight:  Zafferana Etnea Included:  Breakfast

Day 10: Zafferana to Taormina | Cycling 80Km/1600m

Gran finale with a view at the classy taormina.

Our final ride starts crossing the  luscious vineyards of Milo and Linguaglossa local grapes , growing in the fertile volcanic landscape. Those wines are now considered some of the best expressions of southern Italian wines. We’ll ride across Castiglione di Sicilia , truly medieval and not “Touristy”, beautifully perched on a hilltop surrounded by thousands of hectares of vineyards. The last breathtaking downhill is along the Alcantara Canyons. Then we’ll touch the Med at the Greek-origin village of Giardini Naxos, finally conquering the  stunning Taormina . Again, we’ve carefully selected all the properties used in this tour. More romantic than that, it’s simply impossible!

Overnight:  Taormina Included:  Breakfast Dinner

Day 11: Arrivederci!

Sadly today we leave, but we are sure that we will meet again on the roads of the Mediterranean!

Included:  Breakfast

Best hikes in Sicily

hiking in sicily

Here at Sicily Travel blog, we thought it was time to come out with the first real guide to the best self-guided hikes available in Sicily. I am Ivano Lupini, a Sicilian Mountain guide, and I want to share my knowledge of the territory with you fellows independent travellers. So get ready to find out my favourite five best self-guided Hikes in Sicily.

Best Hikes Sicily

Before sharing my favourite self-guided hikes in Sicily, I want to make some recommendations. Please never underestimate the power of nature . If you realize the weather is turning nasty, stop, find a shelter and as soon as the conditions allow, you head back to the starting point. Always bring a rucksack with spare clothes, a first aid kit, a thermal blanket and an extra sweater. Before leaving your hotel, tell reception where you are going and when you are planning to get back. Be smart and enjoy your outdoor adventure. For advice, please feel free to get in touch with me through the home page of Sicily Active . There you will find my telephone number and email. I will be delighted to help you with your self-guided hikes in Sicily.

1 Etna Nord Side, Serracozzo trail

Distance: 12/14 km.  Walking: 6 hours  Level: Medium

A view of the serracozzo trail. Sicily

I couldn't help but start this list of my favourite self-guided hikes from Mt. Etna, the highest mountain in Sicily. Etna is also one of the most active volcanoes on the planet. The self-guided hike is the  Serracozzo's path that starts two hundred meters from the Rifugio Citelli (a mountain shelter) on the north side of Etna, not far from Taormina . From the Rifugio Citelli proceed west on the paved road for a hundred meters, then up the bend, you meet a path that winds through the forest. The hike is not signposted but keep your eyes open and look for yellow or red signs sprayed on the rocks and on the bark of the birch trees. After 45 minutes, you will reach Serracozzo Cave, leave your rucksack outside and enter the cave. Just mind your head, especially at the beginning. Once finished with the visit to the cave, keep on climbing southwards for another forty minutes before reaching the edge of the Bove Valley. This magnificent valley represents one of the most breathtaking landscapes of the volcano. Keep walking on the ridge of the Valle del Bove northwest until you meet a canal of volcanic ash; follow it before turning right and re-entering the path that leads to the parking lot in front of the Rifugio Citelli.  We suggest doing this self-guided trekking between May and the beginning of November. Pay attention when crossing the four canal of slippery volcanic rock before the cave.

2 From Graniti to Roccafiorita

16/20 km. 4/6 hours  level: easy

Roccafiorita hike

This is truly an off the beaten path self-guided hike of easy difficulty in the district of Messina on Sicily’s east coast, not far from Taormina. Drive to Graniti, a small village in the Alcantara Valley. Drive past the town proceed uphill for ten minutes until the end of the road. Park by a big tree, there must be a natural spring too. In front of you will see a small trail that heads towards the north just follow it. While hiking, enjoy the wild beauty of the Agrò Valley. After two hours, you will see the church of Roccafiorita overlooking the Mediterranean Sea north and Mount Etna south. If you had enough, head back to the car; otherwise, go down from the church to Roccafiorita, one of the smallest villages of Sicily. Villagers will be surprised to see foreigners. Keep in Mind that the scorching heat will make the hike unpleasant in mid-summer. I suggest avoiding this trekking between mid-June and mid-September.

3 Mount Etna to the Summit

16 km. 10 hours level. Hard

Self guided hike on Mount Etna

Yes, I know to get to the summit of Mount Etna , you are obliged to hire a guide, but… but… there is a long trail you can follow to do a self-guided hike to the summit of Mount Etna. Above all , r emember to be cautious . Mount Etna is a medium explosive volcano but is one of the most active on the planet. So please, once at the summit, do not stand for too long on the edge of the crater. Remember that explosions happen daily . Ideally, you should wear a helmet. Reach Piano Provenzana, the site of the massive eruption of 2002 on Etna north side. From Piano Provenzano, look for a green bar by the office of a hiking company. Now all you have to do, follow the wide trail. Along the way, you can even visit the craters formed during the massive eruption of 2002. After three hours, you will reach a crossroad; the one on the left head towards the observatory of volcanology, while the one that leads straight goes to the summit of mt Etna. Suppose you feel that going to the volcano's summit is too hard, go to the observatory, the view is fantastic, and not everybody comes this far on foot. An alternative might be the rental of two E-Bike at the Clan Dei Ragazzi, a Mountain Chalet not far from Piano Provenzana. We advise you to refrain to climb to the summit between November and late April, the presence of ice can be dangerous.

4 Vendicari Nature reserve

6 km  2 hours  level: easy

Vendicari sicily

This self-guided hike is ideal for beach lovers or families with young kids. The Vendicari Nature Reserve is located in the province of Syracuse within the municipality of Noto. Within the reserve, there are three trails; one archaeological, one historical and the blue one, a naturalistic one that winds along the beaches of the reserve. The blue route will allow you to visit the northern area of the reserve, starting from the Eloro beach. After a short walk along the dirt road from the entrance to Eloro, you will find yourself in front of the Eloro beach! On your left are the remains of the Greek city with the same name.  First stop - Eloro beach If you started the journey early in the morning, we recommend that you enjoy this beautiful beach! A stop and a swim before leaving are recommended! Second stage - Marianelli beach Cross the Tellaro creek and continue along the path (or by sea), thus arriving at Marianelli, an isolated, wild and unspoiled beach. Enjoy and chill out. Third stage - Calamosche beach It's time to move towards Calamosche ... Climb up from the small rocky gutter to the right of Marianelli beach and walk along the beaten path. After about twenty minutes of walking… Here is Calamosche! A little tiring, but you have been rewarded! In front of you the most famous beach in reserve!

5 The Nebrodi Mountain Range

22/24 km  8/10 hours  level: medium

Lake biviere Sicily

The Nebrodi Mountain Range is the largest nature reserve in Sicily; The peculiarity of this self-guided hike is the presence of lakes, a rarity in Sicily. To reach the beginning of this trail, drive towards the town of Cesarò. Then head for “Portella Femmina Morta” take the paved road towards to the north-east and follow it for about 1.5 km, up to the "Portella Calacudera"; a crossroads where you have to park the car. From Portella Calacudera proceed straight on a dirt road, soon you begin to descend slightly in altitude. You will be inside a beautiful beech forest interrupted by some small clearings from time to time.  Pass a stretch of paved road with a very bumpy bottom, and you reach, immediately after a short steep descent, the small Lake Maulazzo. Once you have bypassed the lake from the north - leave a deviation on the left and always follow the signs for the Biviere di Cesarò and Portella Mitta - the road begins to descend again. From here, walk along the dirt road on the left, pass over a stream hidden by the dense beech forest. After a double bend, you meet some centuries-old beech trees and a large clearing. Reached the crossroads of Passo Taverna, leave the road on the left, which proceeds towards Alcara Li Fusi, and continue eastwards, crossing the Cuderì stream. From the road, it goes mainly downhill. The beech forest becomes even more dense and beautiful. You pass another stream  - also in this case and in the following ones you have to walk in the water. Further on, along the northern slopes of Monte Soro, you reach a vast clearing and a large pool of water on the north-eastern edge. Back in the woods again, you pass two other small streams and then, in the distance, on the right, you can see the outline of the Casa Riviere. Leaving a detour to the left, take a stretch of road bordered by holly and reach Lake Biviere with a fantastic view of Mount Etna in the distance

From climbing active volcanoes to dramatic limestone gorges, from snow-capped mountains to idyllic coastlines and from flower-filled meadows to light-dappled forests to bejewelled citrus groves, Sicily is a fabulous place for a guided small group walking holiday. The walking is wonderfully varied — and there are routes to suit all levels. The island’s mild climate favours walking in the Spring and the Autumn – at times you would not consider booking a walking holiday in the colder climes of Northern Europe. The scenery is often spectacular and our guests often remark that the sheer variety of it all exceeded all expectations. And of course, the abundance of good food and wine in Sicily means that you are well looked after at the end of the day.

Join us on one of our expert-led tours with a small group of like-minded people and we can guarantee you a fantastic activity holiday. Listed below are a selection of the small group walking tours we run:

sicily self guided tour

Sicily walking tours in the Madonie Mountains

One of the classic Sicily walking routes, our journey takes us on a continuous path from the centre of the island near the town of Enna over the stunning Madonie mountain range to the coast near Cefalù passing through some of Sicily’s wildest and most rugged countryside, and with some of the most spectacular views the island has to offer.

Difficulty: medium Suitable for walkers who are comfortable doing 10km/day on uneven ground. Some of the footpaths are poorly defined, meaning that the going underfoot can be difficult at times.

Monte Fossa delle Felci Filicudi

Sicily walking tours in the Aeolian islands

With two active volcanoes, dramatic volcanic rock formations, whitewashed villages cascading with bougrainvillea and a crystal azure sea, the Aeolian islands offer some of Sicily’s most amazing walking. The seven islands that make up the archipelago each have very different characters making for varied and interesting walking. The islands even have their own distinctive cuisine — featuring lots of fresh fish, and locally-grown capers, olives and tomatoes — and are home to several world-class wineries.

Difficulty: medium/hard Suitable for experienced walkers who are comfortable with some steep climbs. The going underfoot is often rocky and uneven.

View from the Peloritani

Walking holidays in Eastern Sicily

One of our most popular Sicily walking holidays, our Walking in Eastern Sicily tour combines some spectacular scenery with intriguing towns and villages and walking among some of the most beautiful — and little known — mountains in the Mediterranean.

Difficulty: easy/medium This is our easiest walking holiday, suitable for anyone comfortable doing 6km day.

Walking in the Aspromonte

Just across the Straits of Messina, shoe-horned into the toe of Southern Italy, the Aspromonte mountains are some of the wildest and most beautiful in Europe. Thickly forested with beech and pine, the walking is often soft underfoot and in the shade of the forest is cool in the midday sun.

Difficulty: medium-difficult Some steep climbs and longish hikes make this a challenge for more experienced hikers.

Your questions answered

May is usually a lovely month in Sicily – with mild day-time temperatures and cool evenings and the wild flowers in full bloom. October too, can be a good month for walking – often with drier days than the Spring.

The difference is essentially semantic. In Britain we usually refer to these types of holidays as “walking” holidays, but in the States it is more common to refer to the activity as “trekking” or “hiking” . It British English there is no connotation of a “walking holiday” being any more or less difficult than a “trekking holiday”.

The grading is described on each of the pages. If you are unsure, please get in touch with the office before booking.

No, your luggage will be carried for you in our minibus – leaving you free to enjoy the scenery.

Absolutely. We are keen to welcome single travellers on all our walking tours.

And, of course, if you have any further questions, just get in touch and we’ll only be too pleased to help you.

The magnificence of the Cathedral of San Giorgio draws attention and dominates the city thanks to its imposing and panoramic staircase. In these places, a large part of the famous Tv series were filmed and they will make you dream! Day 3: Scicli – Donnafugata Castle (Hotel near Ragusa)

After breakfast, you can visit Scicli , a very unique town! It owes its beauty to the sweet landscape of Mediterranea maquis with almond and orange groves, to the sea but also to the great history which made it a magnificent city of art. Harmoniously nestled in a basin among rocky hills and immersed in the magnificence of the Iblei mounts, Scicli is set within three narrow valleys, called Cave (the valleys of Modica, Santa Maria La Nova and San Bartolomeo). Many buildings make the historic city centre a real Baroque jewel! The castle and the Church of San Matteo, places of great interest, rise on the hills, dominating the town and the surrounding landscape. Thanks to the spectacular architecture of its views, Scicli is often chosen as a location for the “Inspector Montalbano” TV series; here is the Vigata’s Police Station ( which is actually the City Hall), where Montalbano’s life is linked with that of his colleagues and with the intriguing events in which he is involved. You can continue the tour to the Donnafugata Castle , a very popular place in the Camilleri’s novels. The Castle is an emblematic example of the attention of the old Sicilian aristocracy to the country house, an elegant mansion to spend the summertime. Thanks to the Baron Corrado Arezzo’ wishes, the Castle underwent numerous transformations; from fortified farmhouse to neo-Gothic castle. You will visit its sumptuous rooms passing from the wide staircase with asphaltic stone floor and vases, to the monumental 8-hectare park. It once counted over 1500 plant species and several settings which amused guests, such as the circular temple, the Coffee House and some artificial caves with fake stalactites. Return to the hotel and overnight.

Day 4: Punta Secca and relaxing day among the places of Montalbano (Hotel near Ragusa)

Punta Secca as known as “Marinella”, the fictitious town of Montalbano’s home, is a small corner of paradise, a spectacular glimpse of Sicily that you will visit today, after breakfast. Here life has the sound of the breaking waves, very emotional in the clear sunrises and wonderful sunsets. Do not miss the villa on the sea from where the popular Inspector, played by Luca Zingaretti, usually looks out every morning to admire the Sicilian sea. You will also visit the famous Fornace Penna (the “mànnara”), another place of the series, located in the Pisciotto district in Sampieri . Free time for a walk, a nice swim or an aperitif overlooking the sea! Return to the hotel and overnight.

Day 5: Ispica – Marzamemi – Noto (Hotel in Ortigia)

After breakfast, you will leave Ragusa towards Ispica for a short visit to this town, whose ruins of human settlements date back to the Bronze Age. These remains have given rise to the Parco della Forza, where it is possible to visit caves, prehistoric necropolises, Christian catacombs and cave churches. To fully appreciate Ispica, it is also worths taking a walk through the historic city centre where you can admire Baroque churches and convents and also Palazzo Bruno, the city hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building. Then you will visit Marzamemi ; this small village, that entirely rises on the sea, dates back to around the year 1000, when the Arabs built the tonnara which was the main one in the whole Eastern Sicily for many centuries. This beautiful seaside village, however, as it appears to us today, dates back to the 1700s when the famous Villadorata family changed the tonnara by expanding its spaces, building the church of San Francesco di Paola and the fishermen’s houses. With its lots of craft shops and restaurant-bars, Marzamemi allows pleasant walks throughout the year, especially in summer. You will continue your journey to Noto , capital of the Sicilian Baroque, called the “stone garden”, full of stunning buildings and declared Unesco World Heritage Site. Inspired by Baroque ideals of “open city”, Noto is a rare masterpiece and the most clear example of theatrical tastes in 18th century architecture. You can stroll among the streets of the city center to admire the skill and ingenious flair of the local workers. Accommodation in the hotel near Ortygia and overnight.

Day 6: Syracuse – Catania APT

Breakfast at the hotel and visit of Syracuse , UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest and most powerful Greek colony in Sicily. Its large Archaeological Park of Neapolis keeps the splendid Greek Theater, the Roman Amphitheater, the Latomie del Paradiso and the suggestive Ear of Dionysius. You will then continue with the historical city centre of Ortygia , where most of the monuments are concentrated. You will be enchanted by the stunning Piazza Duomo and its Cathedral whose façade is a powerful Sicilian-Baroque composition and the architectural structure conceals one of the most popular Doric-style temple in Sicily. Along the delightful narrow streets of the centre you will admire, in front of the sea, the famous and mythological Arethusa’s Fountaine. Free time for lunch and in the afternoon transfer to Catania airport (about 1h far), where you will leave your rental car before departure.
