About the hellacopters.

The Hellacopters were a Swedish garage rock band that was formed in 1994 by Nicke Andersson (vocals and guitar), Dregen (guitar), Kenny Håkansson (bass) and Robert Eriksson (drums). Andersson (sometimes known as Nick Royale) had been the drummer for death metal band Entombed and Dregen was taking a break from his full-time band Backyard Babies. Dregen and Eriksson had been roadies for Entombed, while Håkansson was a childhood friend of Andersson's. The Hellacopters were initially conceived as a side project for Andersson and Dregen, but it eventually became the main songwriting and performance vehicle for Andersson. The band was, together with The Hives, one of the most important Swedish bands in the garage rock revival and one of the most influential rock bands in Sweden. The band released their Swedish Grammy-winning debut album Supershitty to the Max! in 1996. Just before a tour opening for Kiss, the band recruited keyboardist and percussionist Anders Lindström (also known as Boba Fett or Boba) on a part-time basis; he would become a full-time member in 1999. After the album Payin' the Dues in 1998, Dregen left the band to return to Backyard Babies full-time, and Mattias Hellberg and Danne Andersson were recruited to complete the band touring responsibilities. After the release of Grande Rock, which featured additional guitar playing from both Lindström and Hellberg, Robert Dahlqvist was hired as a full-time lead guitarist in 1999. With the lineup now solidified, the band released three more studio albums and a cover album, with many EPs and limited edition releases as well. The Hellacopters disbanded amicably in 2008 so the members could move on to other projects.

The Hellacopters were formed in 1994 by Nicke Andersson (vocals and guitar), Dregen (guitar), Kenny Håkansson (bass) and Robert Eriksson (drums). At that time Andersson was renowned in the metal scene for his work in well-known Swedish death metal band Entombed and Dregen had built a reputation as co-founder and guitarist of his main band Backyard Babies.

Next to The Hives and The Backyard Babies, The Hellacopters are considered one of the most important and influential Swedish rock bands of the 1990s and 2000s – they achieved two Gold certifications, won a Swedish Grammy and a Kerrang! award, have amassed 100 million streams to date and have supported and toured with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Kiss, Black Sabbath, ZZ Top and The Foo Fighters. They have released seven albums, ranging fuzzed-out and supercharged garage punk on “Supershitty to the Max!” (1996) and “Payin’ the Dues” (1997) to perfectly crafted and soulful high-energy rock‘n’roll with a strong vintage vibe on the following albums, “Grande Rock” (1999), “High Visibility” (2000), “By the Grace of God” (2002) and “Rock & Roll is Dead” (2005). A compilation of cover songs called “Head Off” was released in 2008 and marked the band’s last album before ultimately dissolving. In addition The Hellacopters have released almost four dozen singles, splits and EPs until this day, most of which got the limited 7-inch or 10-inch vinyl treatment, making them a vinyl collector’s dream… or worst nightmare.

The Hellacopters reunited in 2016 to play a few shows for the 20th anniversary of their debut album, and have proven an unstoppable force ever since, performing at Sweden Rock Festival, Psycho Las Vegas, Download, Hellfest, Roskilde, Ilosaarirock, among others. In October 2021 they announced that they had signed a deal with Nuclear Blast Records and a new album was released in April 2022.

Album review: The Hellacopters – Eyes Of Oblivion

More classy rock’n’roll brilliance from Swedish retro-rock kings The Hellacopters, who take off once again…

Album review: The Hellacopters – Eyes Of Oblivion

Nicke Andersson is an enviable man. Having been instrumental in defining ’90s death metal as the drummer for Entombed , the man's musical legacy is already something to behold. But ever since he stepped out from behind the kit to front The Hellacopters , he's also proven himself a genius with the riffs and swagger of the finest rock’n’roll of the ’60s and ’70s, throwing all together with a punky engine and a sense that his musical mind is actually from a far older decade than the head in which it is housed. The Rolling Stones like them so much they invited them to play with them. Not bad, really.

Now, not content with conjuring up glamour-Sabbath brilliance on last year's Lucifer album, IV, less than 12 months later his main band return with another doozy. And if you were in need of a reminder of the thrilling Friday night thrill of a loud guitar after the recent troubles, there are few better equipped for the job.

In Reap A Hurricane, they have perhaps their most 'let's have it' tune since their iconic By The Grace Of God. It's big, riffy, and smarter than it first sounds. A Plow And A Doctor makes a knowing nod in Jimi Hendrix's direction, while Positively Not Knowing rushes up, just aggressive enough with its snappy, quick-fire drums, but also with a beguiling charm as well. On So Sorry I Could Die they take a bluesy tack, on The Pressure's On something almost approaching Springsteen or Tom Petty at their most busker-y.

It's the natural swing they have, the apparent lack of having to try at this, that makes – and has always made – The Hellacopters such a good band. Little references pop up, but it's not that this is a studied take on rock’n’roll so much as an innate thing, an instinct. Cool, classy and effortlessly clear in their intentions, The Hellacopters continue to fly brilliantly.

Verdict: 4/5

The Sky's the limit: The return of rock'n'roll heroes The Hellacopters

Returning after a 14-year hiatus, Swedish rock mavericks The Hellacopters look at where it all went wrong, and right

The Hellacopters group shot

The Hellacopters, now firmly back in the saddle with Eyes Of Oblivion – their first album since 2008 – have teetered on the brink of making it big for more than a quarter of a century. Consider their time-honoured stock in trade (an incendiary, soul-infused combination of Stooges , Ramones , Kiss and MC5 ), and that they arrived at the vanguard of the widely touted, media-supported Swederock movement of the mid-90s, and their lack of mainstream success borders on baffling.

Examine all available evidence closer, however, and all becomes clear. Hellacopters co-founders Nicke ‘Nick Royale’ Andersson and Andreas ‘Dregen’ Svensson have never, ever accepted that when it comes to the business of making rock’n’roll, you can’t have your cake and eat it. And since the pair originally hooked up as teenage “Kiss nerds” in early-90s Stockholm – when 17-year-old Dregen borrowed 18-year-old Andersson’s ID in order to gain entry to the city’s Ritz nightclub – they have both eaten an awful lot of cake. Not to mention, in Andersson’s case at least, a healthy portion of humble pie.

“Who would’ve thought we’d leave some kind of legacy for some people?” the Hellacopter-in-chief muses, considering Eyes Of Oblivion ’s rave reviews and the social media heat that has greeted the quintet’s on-form reanimation. “We have to nurture that, and be serious about it. It may be kind of funny to play rock’n’roll, but it feels pretty good.”

In light of all subsequent events, it should come as no surprise that The Hellacopters started life as a side project for both central protagonists. Strap yourself in, things are about to get complicated…

When the band formed, Andersson was drumming for death-metal band Entombed and Dregen was the guitarist for the Backyard Babies (concurrent to being Andersson’s roadie). Following the ’Copters’ second album, 1997’s Payin’ The Dues , Dregen left to concentrate on Backyard Babies, while Andersson set to work on Grande Rock , the 1999 album that saw the band developing from the garage to embrace a decidedly more classic rock sound.

That same year, both Dregen and Andersson appeared with Ginger Wildheart on the Supershit 666 EP. With the ’Copters’ fifth album, By The Grace Of God (2002), just released, Andersson was invited by Wayne Kramer to join the remaining members of the MC5, with whom he toured (as guitarist) during 2003 and 2004.

While on tour in the States, Andersson made the acquaintance of Sonic’s Rendezvous Band singer Scott Morgan, who presented him with the opportunity to scratch his enduring garage-rock itch as drummer with The Hydromatics, and latterly with the more Stax/soul-inspired The Solution (formed in 2004 and, according to Andersson, still operational).

With The Hellacopters still attempting to break through a resilient commercial glass ceiling with their sixth album, Rock & Roll Is Dead , Andersson formed Death Breath, a “pure death metal” band who made two albums in ’05 and ’07. He had further side projects, some involving Dregen (who was also, lest we forget, still trying to break Backyard Babies through into the rock mainstream).

Forget cakes, if you’re looking for an even more pertinent metaphor, it’s that the best way to enjoy a successful marriage is probably not to engage in an endless succession of extra-marital affairs. Similarly, if you’re looking to break a band, it’s probably best not to have another three on the go at the same time.

“Ah, well, yeah. I suppose when you put it that way…” Andersson says, laughing. “But maybe I’m a little bit different in the way that I see things concerning music. I never saw anything as a career move, ever. And I still don’t. When I started with Entombed, the big goal was to make a demo, and then the second goal was to make a second demo. It’s always been that way – day by day.”

“The original plan with The Hellacopters was to release seven-inch singles in editions of three hundred copies,” says Dregen. “So when we got offered our first deal, on a really small independent label, we were like: ‘Isn’t this really a sell-out, to do an album?’”

Alt

Maybe this explains everything. The Hellacopters never attained mainstream success because they didn’t crave mainstream success. Rather than knuckle down and focus single-mindedly on developing a stylistically linear marketable product – attractive to record labels and media alike – Andersson wanted to try everything. To indulge all aspects of an unusually broad musical taste.

“First and foremost, I’m a music fan, and if there’s something I really get into I feel the urge to try it myself,” he says. “The idea with The Solution was to try to do something Motown crossed with southern soul. I’m from Sweden ,which makes it seem a bit far-fetched, but then we had Scott Morgan to make it okay.

“I just wanted to do it because I love the music so much; I just wanted to see if it was do-able. I mean, there’s not many other things that I’d want to try, because I do like guitar-based music… Maybe a country record?” he laughs.

Obviously there’s nothing wrong with being rock’s renaissance man – to pursue parallel lives as a baseball-capped garage-rock frontman, a death metal drummer, a Detroit rock and soul guitar player and, potentially, a country singer – but it’s hardly the most marketable of propositions.

And as the years passed, life in The Hellacopters (with a line-up then completed by Robert ‘Strings’ Dahlqvist on guitar, Kenny Håkansson on bass, Anders ‘Boba Fett’ Lindström on keyboards and Matz Robert ‘Robban’ Eriksson on drums) became increasingly predictable. Their profile as ever-reliable cult favourites remained static, and Andersson finally put the band on ice in 2007, before releasing Head Off , a coolly received swan song covers album, in 2008.

“I thought: ‘Isn’t it better to stop when it actually feels like we’re doing something good, rather than just keep hammering it out?’” Andersson says of the split. “I mean, I did ask the question that I was hoping the other guys would ask themselves, which was: ‘Why do we do this?’ If it’s only to pay the bills – and while we weren’t rich, it did pay the bills – that cannot be the reason for it. And you grow up and a lot of times you drift apart, even if you’re in the same band.”

Unsurprisingly, The Hellacopters’ break up didn’t stem Nicke Andersson’s unquenchable desire to make music; he worked on a solo album (“After four or five songs working alone, I thought: ‘This is boring’’’), and then with Cold Ethyl, a band who by 2010 had ultimately evolved into Imperial State Electric. Nor did it stem the desire of the world at large for more Hellacopters: “Within a year of breaking up we were getting offers from promoters for us to reunite.”

“The Hellacopters has always been special to me,” says Dregen. “Me and Nicke formed it, we named it… And there was no ‘Fuck this, I quit’ moment. I just had to choose to go with them or Backyard Babies, I couldn’t do both. Anyway, Sweden Rock had been asking Nicke to re-form The Hellacopters every year after he broke up the band, then in 2016 they said: ‘Now it’s the 20th birthday of your first record, Supershitty To The Max! .

"And we were like: ‘Okay, maybe we just do that album and earlier songs’. So we rehearsed and it was a lot of fun, did the gig and that was a lot of fun, started jamming some stuff and that was a lot of fun, until we were like: ‘We don’t wanna reunite for nostalgic reasons. If we’re going to make an album, we want to make an album that matters today.’ Which we did.”

Making Eyes Of Oblivion didn’t turn out to be quite as straightforward as expected, though. First of all, Dregen had to fulfil his touring obligations with Backyard Babies, and then… Well, we all know what happened next.

“We did the Wildhearts UK tour in February 2020,” Dregen continues. “Then I went straight to South America for the Hellacopters tour, covid happened and we were stuck in Brazil. Just as it locked down we got the last plane to Europe, to Lisbon, and then suddenly I’m not juggling two bands any more. I’m lost in limbo for two years because of covid-19.”

“We started the album three years ago,” says Andersson, “and there were gaps of months between sessions. All in all it probably only took about two or three weeks of actual studio time. I never want to record an album that way again. It’s too spread out. You get excited, then you get unexcited, then you have to try to work it up again. So I think for the next album – and there will be one – we’re just going to do it the old way: you rehearse, then you record and it’s done.”

Incredibly, Eyes Of Oblivion turned out to be an extraordinary record, a stunning return to form, firmly rooted in the late 60s/early 70s (“I prefer timeless to retro,” says Andersson), but blazing with an immutable quality beyond anything previously heard from The Hellacopters. A legacy, perhaps, of myriad lessons learned outside of the confines of the band in question. Lessons learned playing death metal, garage, rock’n’roll, soul, glam-punk, at the right hand of Wayne Kramer (Andersson), and at the left hand of Michael Monroe (Dregen).

One thing’s for certain: these tireless road dogs, finally back in harness, have never been more ready for take-off.

REVIEW: THE HELLACOPTERS – EYES OF OBLIVION (2022)

Nicke, Dregen and the lads return with a first in 14 years

“Eyes Of Oblivion” is The Hellacopters eighth record. The first for 14 years since 2008’s “Head Off”. That’s fine, and all strictly true. Ask my postman about their back catalogue though and you’d get a wry smile and a rueful look into the middle distance.

You see, there was a time in the late 90s and early 2000’s that he was marching vinyl’s down my drive on an almost weekly basis.

The Hellacopters were the archetypal underground heroes. Record clubs and proto online communities existed solely around their music (I know because I was in them all). Thus, it’s tough to explain the importance of “Eyes Of Oblivion” to some of us. There will be people reading this through the same misty eyed nostalgia for nights on the Changes One Message Board, or the import record shop on the South Coast that I forget the name of that I paid an absolute fortune to for the white vinyl of “Grande Rock” in 1999.

In fact, I am tempted to say that if you weren’t around for the first time let us have our moment, catch us up later, yeah?

There’s a matter at hand, mind you, and its these ten songs. And I’ll be totally honest, this was a record that you put on your playlist with trepidation. This is The Hellacopters, man. This is not some shitty little band that’s reformed. They’d best not mess this up.

So you’d best believe that I’ve got a vested interest in this. I’d never lie about something so important. Like when Homer Simpson said: “this isn’t like a loan application or a mortgage.”

And I’m here to tell you that “Eyes Of Oblivion” isn’t very good. Rather its astonishingly brilliant.

It begins, as it should with a riff from Dregen, one that doesn’t so much say “we’re back” as “ I’m back mofos!” and The Backyard Babies man is back in the saddle this time for the first time in a quarter of a century, for all kinds of sonic madness. The leads slash, course they do, but its not 1996 anymore, so nothing’s to the Max, not really. Rather it’s a study in the rock sound that this band and the aforementioned BB created. And one which no one else has perfected except them.

“Can It Wait” does more in less than two minutes than most do in careers. Even more incredible is that isn’t particularly punk, its just short and perfectly formed as the interplay between Dregen and Nicke Andersson underpins this.

“So Sorry I Could Die” was a shock when the single came out. Proper blues. Proper dark and the keys of Anders Lindstrom are mighty here. Plus the cleverness of the lyrics should never be underestimated where this band are concerned.

The title track is the sound of cobwebs being dusted off. Latter period (the first time round) albums were full of brilliance like this and Andersson reckons some of these were written a decade ago. I’d bet this is one.

Indeed, everywhere you look there’s nods to the old sound, it sounds fresh. “A Plow And A Doctor” begins with the words “it seems we all caught a cold” and might be about the pandemic. Then again it might not. What I am certain about is that the drums of Robert Erickson thunder on “Positively Not Knowing” (key line “I don’t know where I am going, but I’ll go eventually” – a maxim to live by if ever there was one.) and I am fairly sure that “Tin Foil Soldier” rails against the modern world. That it does so with stack heels and a glam stomp that would make Sweet blush is even better. It might be the best thing here (in truth I’ve listened to the album about 10 times and had a different favourite every damn occasion).

“Beguiled” has a little gallop, and “The Pressure’s On” is so catchy they probably need to come up with a vaccine for it (and that’s the mid paced ballady one they always chuck in), while the last one “Try Me Tonight” is a romp. Where they’ve just chucked everything in. A bit of Chuck Berry here, a bit of Thin Lizzy there, layers of harmony and a piano that comes straight out over “Great Balls Of Fire”. Great balls of something pulls this off, I guess. That’s why The Hellacopters had no peer.

They still don’t. “”Eyes Of Oblivion” is made by five men (including new bassist Dolf De Borst) with a chemistry and a total mastery of their craft. It’s incredible. And to borrow a line from The Wildhearts: “and now you’re back, its like you never really went away.” The Hellacopters didn’t, actually, I play them still as much as I mention them in reviews (which is just about every blinking week!) but now they are here for real, and pinch yourself, I swear this is as good as anything they’ve ever put out.

When it comes to The Hellacopters, more than most bands, if you know, you know . And I know this is a work of genius.

Rating: Guess.

REVISIT THE SINGLES & VIDEOS FROM  EYES OF OBLIVION :

THE HELLACOPTERS  were formed in 1994 by Nicke Andersson (vocals and guitar), Dregen (guitar), Kenny Håkansson (bass) and Robert Eriksson (drums). At that time Andersson was renowned in the metal scene for his work in well-known Swedish death metal band ENTOMBED and Dregen had built a reputation as co-founder and guitarist of his main band BACKYARD BABIES.

Next to THE HIVES and THE BACKYARD BABIES,  THE HELLACOPTERS  are considered one of the most important and influential Swedish rock bands of the 1990s and 2000s – they achieved  two Gold certifications , won the  Swedish Grammy  and a  Kerrang! Award , have amassed 100 million streams to date and have supported and toured with the likes of The Rolling Stones, Kiss, Black Sabbath, ZZ Top or the Foo Fighters. They have released seven albums, ranging fuzzed-out & supercharged garage punk on  Supershitty To The Max!  (1996) &  Payin’ The Dues  (1997) to perfectly crafted & soulful high-energy rock’n’roll with a strong vintage vibe on the following albums,  Grande Rock  (1999),  High Visibility  (2000),  By The Grace Of God  (2002) and  Rock & Roll Is Dead  (2005). A compilation of cover songs called  Head Off  was released in 2008 and marked the band’s last album before ultimately dissolving. In addition THE HELLACOPTERS have released almost four dozen singles, splits and EPs until this day, most of which got the limited 7inch or 10inch vinyl treament, making them a vinyl collector’s dream … or worst nightmare.

In October 2021 they announced that they had signed a deal with Nuclear Blast Records and a new album would be in the works for Spring 2022. The first new single, ‘ Reap A Hurricane ,’ saw the light of day on December 17th, 2021, and was premiered live on stage at a sold out show at Globen in Stockholm on the very same day. Their critically acclaimed 8th studio album,  Eyes of Oblivion , was released on April 1st, 2022, and has gained them international chart success, e.g. in Sweden (#1 for two consecutive weeks), Finland (#2 Physical), Germany (#3 Album Charts), UK (#5 Rock), Switzerland (#11 Album Charts) and many other countries.
