Before You Fly: Singapore's Updated Travel Advisory Demands Attention
Jetsetters, take note of the spike in covid-19 cases in singapore and the latest travel advisory to ensure a safe and smooth experience..
By: Priyaja Bakshi Published: Dec 19, 2023 10:00 AM UTC
Singapore has witnessed a surge in COVID-19 cases over the past month, prompting the Ministry of Health to issue a travel advisory to curb the spread of the infection. The Singapore Travel Advisory emphasises the importance of wearing masks, particularly in public spaces such as Singapore Changi International Airport.
Singapore has experienced a sudden increase in COVID-19 cases during the first week of December. The reported cases surged from 32,035 to 56,043 between December 3-9. According to the Ministry of Health, the predominant variant in Singapore’s COVID-19 cases is JN.1, a sublineage of BA.2.86. Stay informed about the evolving situation and adhere to recommended guidelines to safeguard public health.
Getting vaccinated against COVID-19 is crucial to prevent severe illness. The government has strongly encouraged the public to “wear masks in crowded places, even if they are sick”. Additionally, individuals with acute respiratory infection (ARI) symptoms are urged to stay at home and refrain from contact with others.
COVID-19: Singapore Ministry of Health issues travel advisory
Travellers are advised to take necessary precautions, including avoiding crowded areas with poor ventilation, wearing masks at the airport , and obtaining travel insurance.
For those planning travel during the upcoming peak season, a health risk assessment with a doctor four to six weeks before departure is recommended. Vaccination advice and prophylaxis should be sought, including compliance with yellow fever vaccination requirements for visiting Singapore. Staying current with vaccinations and boosters according to the National Adult Immunisation Schedule (NAIS) or National Childhood Immunisation Schedule (NCIS) is crucial.

During the trip, practising good personal hygiene—regular handwashing, use of hand sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol, and covering the mouth when sneezing or coughing—is essential. Additionally, travellers should consume fully cooked food, avoid raw or undercooked items, and be cautious with water sources. After the trip , individuals feeling unwell are urged to wear masks, inform healthcare providers about their travel history, and seek medical attention promptly.

This audio is AI-generated.
SINGAPORE: A Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight returned to Sydney about an hour after taking off on Sunday (Apr 7) due to a technical issue.
SIA flight SQ232 was originally scheduled to depart at 11am local time and arrive in Singapore at 5.30pm, according to flight tracking website flightradar24.
"The Airbus A380 aircraft landed safely back in Sydney at at 12.42pm local time," an SIA spokesperson said in response to queries from CNA.
The airline added the technical issue was related to the aircraft's flaps. Flaps are used to reduce the take-off and landing distance of an aircraft.
After the technical issue was resolved on the ground in Sydney, the aircraft departed for Singapore at 4.19pm, said the SIA spokesperson. It landed in Singapore at 10.24pm.
SIA said all affected passengers were provided with refreshments and assistance while the issue was being resolved.
"SIA sincerely apologises to all affected customers for any inconvenience caused," the spokesperson added. "The safety of our customers and crew is always our top priority."

Review: New Singapore Airlines x Allianz travel insurance policy
Singapore Airlines' travel insurance is now provided by Allianz, and it's every bit an improvement over the previous AIG policy.
Singapore Airlines passengers have the option to purchase an exclusive travel insurance policy that provides coverage for overseas medical expenses (including COVID-19), accidents and travel inconveniences.
This was previously called Travel Insurance by Travel Guard (underwritten by AIG). Singapore Airlines has now replaced this with a new policy called Travel Protect by Singapore Airlines (underwritten by Allianz).
Coverage is available to Singapore Airlines passengers who are Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents of Singapore, or Singapore Pass Holders and/or Work Permit Holders and their dependents residing in Singapore. Journeys must commence in Singapore.
I’ve gone through the new Allianz policy, and the good news is it’s a significant improvement from the previous AIG one- not only does it offer more coverage, it’s also cheaper to boot.
Allianz Travel Coverage
Travel Protect by Singapore Airlines (which for convenience I’ll just refer to as the “Allianz policy” from hereon) provides up to S$1 million of overseas medical coverage and S$500,000 of emergency medical evacuation coverage (both including COVID-19).
The policy is available regardless of whether you bought your ticket with cash or redeemed miles. Coverage can be added either at the time of booking your itinerary, or subsequently via the Manage Booking function.
If you don’t see the option to add insurance, you’ll need to contact customer service at [email protected] or call +65 6245 4059 (Mon-Fri 0930 to 1730 SGT).
Under the Allianz policy wording , you’ll notice two columns: Comprehensive , and KrisFlyer Comprehensive.
Simply put, if you’re a KrisFlyer member (of any tier) during the period of insurance, you’ll enjoy KrisFlyer Comprehensive coverage. This provides additional coverage for medical expenses, rental car excess, loss of personal documents and more, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t qualify for this.
Comparison: Allianz vs AIG
Here’s a summary of how the new Allianz policy measures up to the previous AIG policy. Do note the following:
- I’ve used Allianz KrisFlyer Comprehensive as the basis of comparison since it costs nothing to join KrisFlyer
- AIG’s values have a range because coverage depends on where you’re travelling to. AIG splits the world into three zones: ASEAN, Asia and International. ASEAN has the lowest coverage, while International has the highest
- AIG also has some supplementary coverage for KrisFlyer members, so I’ve included it where relevant
There’s a lot of information in the table above, but what should immediately jump out is that Allianz not only offers more coverage in most areas, it’s also cheaper than AIG (unfortunately I don’t have historical AIG quotes for travel within Asia/ASEAN, so I can’t make that comparison).
Let’s look at some of the finer details below.
COVID-19 medical expenses & emergency medical evacuation
AIG’s policy covers up to S$350,000 of COVID-19 medical expenses, but Allianz covers up to S$1 million.
More importantly, under the AIG policy both COVID-19 medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation share the same cap (i.e. the maximum you can claim for COVID-19 medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation is S$350,000).
With Allianz, there is a separate cap for COVID-19 emergency medical evacuation of S$500,000.
Chances are, if your situation is bad enough to warrant medical evacuation to Singapore, you’ve already racked up a sizeable overseas medical bill. You’ll want to ensure there’s enough left over to cover the repatriation.
Quarantine allowance
If you’re diagnosed with COVID-19 overseas and are asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, most countries won’t admit you to hospital. Instead, you’ll be issued with a quarantine order, which you’ll serve out in a hotel.
AIG provides a quarantine allowance that varies depending on country (max. 14 consecutive days):
- ASEAN: S$50 per day
- Asia: S$100 per day
- International: S$200 per day
Allianz doesn’t mention a quarantine allowance, but you can make a claim under the trip interruption section for:
Such coverage applies when :
tl;dr: if you get a quarantine order due to COVID-19, you can claim up to S$150 per day for 14 days.
AIG would be more generous for travel outside of Asia and ASEAN, but otherwise Allianz is the superior option.
One-way trips
Given award space constraints, it’s not uncommon for miles collectors to book separate one-way tickets, even if their intention is to fly a round-trip.
While both policies cover one-way trips, AIG was much stricter in its wording. Cover for a one-way trip was limited to certain sections of the policy, commenced 3 hours before leaving Singapore, and ceased at the earlier of:
- the expiry of the period specified in the insurance; or
- your arrival at your first overseas destination
That made it highly impractical on its own. Most customers ended up having to write in to AIG and present 2x one-way tickets, in order to get quoted insurance on a round-trip basis.
Allianz is much kinder with its treatment of one-way trips.
If your policy was purchased with a one-way booking, your coverage end date will be the scheduled return date for your trip, as shown on your travel documents (not exceeding 30 days from the departure date shown on your travel documents). Additionally, your policy will end on the earliest of:
1. At 23:59 on the day you cancel your policy; or 2. At 23:59 on the day you file a trip cancellation claim with us; 3. At 23:59 on the day you end your trip, if you end your trip early; 4. At 23:59 on the day you arrive at a medical facility for further care if you end your trip due to a medical reason; or 5. At 23:59 on the 180th day of the trip
Trip cancellation
In terms of trip cancellation, AIG covers a pre-departure COVID-19 diagnosis, plus the usual reasons like death or serious sickness, witness summons, and natural disasters affecting your destination.
However, Allianz provides a much wider range of covered reasons (16 in total), including a COVID-19 diagnosis, a traffic accident on departure date, getting laid off from work, securing a new job, or having your travel documents stolen.
However, note that neither policy covers trip cancellation resulting from border closures or additional quarantine requirements (so they wouldn’t cover the current situation with Italy , for example).
Coverage of airline miles
Speaking of trip cancellation, AIG’s policy explicitly states that it will not cover the loss of air miles used to pay for the trip.
On the other hand, Allianz’s policy is silent about this subject; the only line I can find that refers to air miles is this:
I take it to mean they will cover such claims, insofar as they relate to the redeposit of airline miles.
Here’s the thing though. There are only two scenarios where you could lose your KrisFlyer miles due to a cancelled trip:
- You booked a Spontaneous Escapes award , which is strictly non-refundable
- Your airline miles have already expired at the time of refund (remember: miles validity is different from ticket validity; if this concept confuses you, read this article )
(1) isn’t an issue right now, because Singapore Airlines has suspended Spontaneous Escapes. With regards to (2), Singapore Airlines has granted extensions to all KrisFlyer miles so the earliest any will expire is April 2022.
In all other situations, you can pay a penalty fee to recover the miles used for your booking, as shown below.
Even if you miss your flight (i.e. no show), the miles are still recoverable. For example, if you made a Business Saver reservation and missed your flight, you’d pay a US$300 no show fee, plus a US$75 fee to change your dates.
Therefore it might not be all that important for travel insurance to cover miles at this juncture, since there’s no Spontaneous Escapes nor expiry.
Unless I’m missing something, Singapore Airlines’ new Allianz travel insurance policy looks to be every bit an improvement over the previous AIG one. Travellers enjoy more generous coverage for a lower fee, and this will more than satisfy the requirements for countries with mandatory COVID-19 travel insurance requirements (e.g. South Korea, Thailand).
Anything else you spotted in the policies worth flagging?

The definition of quarantine in this Allianz policy is so much more reasonable than some other insurers like Chubb. Allianz covers hotel. Chubb covers only government-appointed facilities which is useless in most of the destinations.
This Allianz insurance is new, so its actuarial computations are updated with the most recent data and environment (including where to quarantine). Others were launched earlier using older sets of assumptions and data. They can’t just change coverage anyhow. It’s unfortunate but there is a certain due process.
Hopefully they can change soon. I really liked using Chubb before the pandemic.
Hi Freddy, Chubb had previously shared that their TravellerShield Plus policy will provide cover for quarantine in hotels (under the Overseas Quarantine Benefit due to Covid-19), if all the conditions below are fulfilled: 1. The traveller is diagnosed with Covid-19 2. The overseas destination has no designated quarantine facility for Covid-19 patients 3. The authorities of the overseas destination requires the traveller to be quarantined in a hotel
Hi Aaron. Thanks for following up on this! Do you know where I can find this in Chubb’s website or somewhere? I can’t find it in the policy wording, at least for the one with DBS. If I buy their insurance and make the claim, I can’t say “Aaron Wong from Milelion told me this”…=)
It’s an official reply from a DBS spokesperson quoting a Chubb spokesperson. but yeah I understand the problem, I will ask if they can put it in black and white on the website.
Possible to overcome the IT constraint of Thailand Pass for this insurance?
Thanks Aaron. Good news for travellers!
So I guess the SIA complimentary travel insurance for PPS members has also been shifted from AIG to Allianz and will their policy conditions for this complimentary insurance be the same as mentioned above?
There is complimentary travel insurance for PPS? Oddly enough Google doesn’t seem to know that
I was initially not aware either, until SIA Netherlands informed me of that fact. I broke my wrist in 2019 while overseas. AIG complimentary travel insurance which is only applicable to PPS members if you fly on SIA covered all expenses incl quite a generous sum after my return to Singapore.
Hi Gaby, are you able to provide any link/reference to this policy which covers PPS members for any trips done on SIA flights?
It’s on the SIA PPS portal. It mentions coverage for Overseas Medical and Travel accident insurance. ” provided by AIG. You are covered for accidents and medical emergencies that happen whenever you are in another country”. Then it mentions worldwide emergency assistance underwritten by AXA assistance. Unfortunately can’t attach screenshots.
I just found out that this complimentary AIG travel insurance is only extended to Solitaire members and it is still underwritten by AIG.
The other noteworthy difference is Allianz treats all Epidemics and Pandemics the same (not just covid 19) so whether you are infected with Covid, Ebola or a new Epidemic you receive the same coverage. Most insurers have only extended specific to Covid
I’m personally glad that SQ ditched AIG. Previously I had two one-way trips, called up AIG, they said I had to call SQ to “link” the two bookings first, then call AIG back to get their policy because it has to be tagged to only ONE booking reference. I said no, AIG should have a process to cater to two one-ways and not trouble the passenger to make multiple calls between AIG and SQ. Only then they said they can raise internally for an “exception approval” process. Plus their premium was 3X higher than the other insurer I eventually went … Read more »
One think to point out is SIA-Allianz quarantine allowance (under Trip Interruption) terms are more favourable to the traveler as it provides $150 allowance per day up to 14 days. Whereas the public highest tier platinum policy only provides $500 per day up to 5 days. This is a downer for anyone purchasing the public policy, unless you are certain you can be discharged within 5 days; but there is supposedly the 14 day ICA health declaration issue to contend with (but that’s another matter altogether). Allianz public policy wording Additional accommodation and transportation expenses if the interruption causes you … Read more »
hey thanks bent, this is useful info! I did not know I could claim the remaining 9 days accomodation under Travel Delay of $1500,SJ albeit very low coverage under the public Allianz policy.
I wonder if Allianz covers Flights in between the journey that are purchased separately (eg. Domestic flights / intra schengen flights). AIG does not cover that and it makes it difficult to justify if we arrange a big trip and it is impossible to combine the flight itinerary with SIA / * Alliance.
In today’s context, this does not seem to cover accommodation for a case where you cannot return to SG due to testing positive, and where the foreign country does not require you to go into isolation/quarantine.
https://www.magroup-online.com/SAS/SG/EN/Policy_Wording.pdf it should cover under either of the following scenarios: Covered reasons: 1. You or a travelling companion becomes ill or injured, or develops a medical condition disabling enough to make you interrupt your trip (including being diagnosed with an epidemic or pandemic disease such as COVID-19). The following conditions apply: a. A doctor must either examine or consult with you or the travelling companion before you make a decision to interrupt the trip. b. You must not have travelled against your home country’s government advice or against local authority advice at your trip destination. 13. A travel carrier denies … Read more »
Hi Aaron, I spoke to Allianz CSO and found a slight error regarding the article’s paragraph on Allianz’s coverage for one way ticket coverage. The policy will only cover 30 days from the departure date (of the first ticket), not up to 180 days. So for example, if my one way ticket to USA is on 1 March, the coverage ends on 1 April. This applies even if my holiday is longer than 30 days or if my hospitalization or quarantine stay is beyond 1 April. This is a significant risk that travellers must be aware of when purchasing via … Read more »
Here’s what the policy says: If your policy was purchased with a one-way booking, your coverage end date will be the scheduled return date for your trip, as shown on your travel documents (not exceeding 30 days from the departure date shown on your travel documents). Additionally, your policy will end on the earliest of: 1. At 23:59 on the day you cancel your policy; or 2. At 23:59 on the day you file a trip cancellation claim with us; 3. At 23:59 on the day you end your trip, if you end your trip early; 4. At 23:59 on … Read more »
Thank you Aaron for adding the whole excerpt!
From the way I interpret it, the 30 days limit is an additional limitation for one way ticket trips on top of point 1 to 5. So for my earlier example of 1st March, if I have another one way ticket back to Singapore on 15 April, my trip portion for April 2nd onward would not be covered by the allianz policy bought via sq booking website.
I read elsewhere that Bali does not require mandatory travel insurance – can you clarify or correct that please?

Why do airlines change prices so often?
This is a great question. Budget airlines usually start with default higher price and adjust airfares depending on current demand. AirHint wants to be one step ahead of these changes! Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 Returns To Sydney After Technical Issue
- Singapore Airlines Flight SQ232 safely diverted to Sydney due to a technical issue.
- The incident occurred shortly after takeoff from Sydney. The aircraft landed one hour and 14 minutes later.
- The issue was eventually resolved, and the plane departed at 16:19.
On April 7th, 2024, Singapore Airlines Flight SQ232, a nonstop service from Sydney to Singapore, had to divert to Sydney shortly after takeoff due to an unspecified technical issue. The pilots safely landed the aircraft for maintenance and inspection.
What we know
Singapore Airlines Flight SQ232 is a daily flight that uses an Airbus A380. The aircraft that had the technical issue is registered 9V-SKM and had completed the 7-hour trip from Singapore to Sydney before embarking on the return journey.
According to Flightradar24 , the aircraft took off at 11:09 local time and began climbing to its cruising altitude. However, less than 20 minutes later, it leveled off at 10,000 ft and reported a technical issue to air traffic control. At the time, there were 474 passengers and 27 crew members onboard .
After leveling off, the A380 commenced a U-turn to head over the Tasman Sea. After one hour and 14 minutes, the aircraft landed without any issue at Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport's (SYD) runway 34L at 12:23 local time. A Singapore Airlines spokesperson had this to say about the issue:
“The Airbus A380 aircraft landed safely back in Sydney at 12.42 pm local time. SIA sincerely apologizes to all affected customers for any inconvenience caused. The safety of our customers and crew is always our top priority.”
The flight experienced a delay of four hours while mechanics attempted to solve the problem. Once fixed, the superjumbo took off at 16:19 local time and landed without any issue at 22:24.
Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 Diverts To Frankfurt
What we think.
The crew chose to fly over the Tasman Sea while troubleshooting the issue. While the reason for the decision is unknown, it likely was to dump fuel and reach a more manageable landing weight.
The A380-800's maximum landing weight (MLW) is 391 tonnes. It's estimated to have carried around 120 tonnes of fuel onboard during the flight. Its maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) is 560 tonnes.
While it could land at its MTOW, the airframe could have sustained some damage. The move shows that the issue wasn’t life-threatening, but it was severe enough for the pilots to decide they couldn’t complete the seven-plus-hour flight safely.
While SIA didn’t divulge the nature of the issue, the aircraft leveling off at 10,000 ft could be the source of some speculation. It could’ve been an issue with the aircraft's pressurization system. When there is a cabin pressure issue, ICAO law dictates that an altitude of 10,000 ft should not be exceeded for an extended period unless passengers are on oxygen. However, it could’ve also been a convenient altitude to level off at since the aircraft was still climbing.
About the aircraft
According to Planespotters.net , the Airbus A380-800 involved in the incident is a 13.8-year-old aircraft produced at the Toulouse production site. The aircraft was delivered to Singapore Airlines in September 2011.
This A380 is one of the retrofitted models, which features an F6C78W44Y343 configuration. It has six new first class suites, 78 revamped business class seats, 44 premium economy seats, and 343 economy class seats.

Flying with pets? Here's what to know.
By Anne Marie Lee
Edited By Alain Sherter
Updated on: April 6, 2024 / 10:08 AM EDT / CBS News
Thinking of taking your dog or cat with you the next time you fly? For a growing percentage of the 90.5 million pet owners in the U.S., the answer is yes. But while the notion of boarding a plane with your pet may seem simple, the rules and restrictions around traveling with an animal can be confusing.
Eight major U.S. airlines allow pets to fly in-cabin as carry-ons. But flying with your pet takes research and planning, as pet policies vary from airline to airline, are steeped in restrictions, and are limited to specific countries and cities. You'll also have to pay an extra fee for your pet ranging from $95 to $200, depending on the airline and where you're flying. And restrictions often change.
For example, American Airlines recently revised its policies so passengers flying with pets may also bring one full-size carry-on or personal item. But the carrier prohibits carry-on pets on transatlantic and transpacific flights. Here's what you need to know when considering taking your fur baby with you on a plane.
Cargo, check-in or carry-on?
Most airlines offer three options for transporting animals: cargo, check-in or carry-on. But if your pet is larger than a bread box, your options are limited to the cargo or baggage check-in options, with very few exceptions.
Given that large canine breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are among the most popular dogs in the country, the size restriction for in-cabin pet travel can be a major frustration for those who would rather not fly at all if that means putting their pet in cargo.
A 2023 Forbes Adviser survey of 10,000 U.S. dog owners found that 33% of respondents fly with their pets, while 37% listed not being able to bring their dog on a plane as their biggest annoyance. (You can learn more about the differences between cargo, check-in and carry-on options here , including warnings about the dangers involved when pets travel in the cargo hold.)
Carry-on pets
Even for pet owners whose animals are small enough to fly as a carry-on, traveling is no breeze.
"When I fly with him I have to go to the desk," Margaret Rauch, 44, told CBS MoneyWatch, referring to her 15-pound poodle mix, Soda. The New York City resident has taken Soda on dozens of flights to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Soda, now 4, was being fostered by a friend after being found as a stray puppy in 2021.
In addition to calling the airline in advance to register her dog for a flight, Rauch has to check in at the counter whenever she's traveling with Soda, so the airline agent can confirm her dog and pet carrier conform to the in-cabin pet requirements and that the flight hasn't already met its pet maximum.
Rauch, who said she would never consider putting Soda in cargo, applauded American Airlines' new policy, while noting that in her experience the one carry-on rule was rarely enforced.
"I feel the price is already high for what I get. Even with AA's rule change, I lose the underseat space," she said. "My dog creates no extra work for anyone."
Despite the added preparation, paperwork and hassle involved in flying with Soda — not to mention the unfriendly looks she occasionally detects from fellow passengers at the sight of her pet carrier — Rauch said, "It's absolutely worth it."
Asked how the experience could be improved, she pointed to early boarding for pet owners as something that would help.
"If you can get in early, get a seat and settle down, that is an accommodation I don't expect to see anytime soon but I think it makes sense," Rauch said.
Safety and comfort
For the many Americans who see their pets practically as family members, one of the most challenging aspects of flying is ensuring their animal's comfort and safety.
"The increasing humanization of pets, which involves treating them as part of the family rather than as mere animals, has increased the demand for pet travel services that are of high quality and can be customized to meet the specific needs of each pet," LinkedIn reported in December.
Among other tips, the U.S. Department of Transportation and animal experts recommend that you not feed your pet four to six hours before a flight and limit their water intake. Others also suggest keeping bottled water on hand at all times. Additionally, most airlines require certain vaccination and vet certification that your pet is healthy enough to fly. Individual countries also have their own requirements for pets to enter.
Not surprisingly, some airlines do better than others at handling pets. One of the best-rated carriers for pet travel is Alaska Airlines, which has repeatedly topped rankings, such as NerdWallet's Most pet-friendly airlines of 2024. In recent years, the airline also has maintained one of the industry's lowest incident ratings, according to Veterinarians.org. United Airlines and Delta are among the airlines with the highest incident rates, according to the pet information website.
On Rauch's first plane trip with Soda traveling home to New York, a layover in Miami led to the flight sitting on the tarmac for two hours. Calming treats are something that helps keeps her dog relaxed on flights. She also withholds Soda's food and limits his water intake up to five hours before a flight, which is also helpful given that he doesn't like using pet relief areas, which she said generally smell of urine and can be overwhelming for dogs. Flights between New York City and St. Croix are generally under six hours.
"I'm not sure how I'd handle a flight to Singapore," Rauch said.
Here's a rundown of U.S. airlines' pet travel policies, along with fees and and restrictions:

Statement from flydubai
- The US Embassy received information about possible terrorist attacks and issued a security alert for Mogadishu.
- Some major airlines canceled flights to Mogadishu as a precautionary measure.
- There have been no incidents reported at the airport and some flights to Mogadishu have resumed.
On April 9, a few flights to Mogadishu Aden Adde International Airport were canceled after the US Embassy issued a security threat alert. However, some airlines have resumed flights to the Somali capital.
US Department of State level-four travel advisory
On Monday, the US Embassy in Nairobi received information about threats to several areas in Mogadishu, including the country's largest and busiest airport - Aden Adde International (MGQ) . As such, all movements of US Embassy personnel were canceled for Tuesday, April 9.
The security threat alert is unrelated to the airspace disputes between Somalia and Somaliland
According to the US Embassy in Somalia , the US Department of State level-four travel advisory "do not travel" for Somalia had remained in effect because of crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health, kidnapping, and piracy concerns. The embassy warned of terrorists continuing to plot kidnappings, bombings, and other attacks, targeting airports and various areas that attract large crowds and Westerners.
In response to the alert, some major airlines canceled services to Mogadishu while other flights were diverted to nearby airports. According to Flightradar24 , Turkish Airlines canceled Flight TK646 from Istanbul (IST), scheduled to arrive at 09:05 local time. Qatar Airways Flight QR1459 from Doha (DOH) was also canceled. It was expected to land at Aden Adde Airport at 15:35.
Flydubai Flight FZ609 from Dubai International Airport (DXB) was scheduled to arrive at 11:55, but the service was also canceled. Meanwhile, a Daallo Airlines Boeing 737 operating Flight D3169 from Jeddah to Mogadishu was diverted to Djibouti (JIB).
UPDATE: 2024/04/11 15:02 EST BY TATENDA KARUWA
A flydubai spokesperson said to Simple Flying,
"flydubai flights FZ 609/610 between Dubai International (DXB) and Aden Adde International Airport (MGQ) on 09 April were canceled. Passengers were provided with accommodation, as required, and are scheduled to continue their journey to Dubai on 13 April. We apologize for the inconvenience caused to our passengers’ travel schedules."

Resumption of flights to mogadishu.
The US Embassy advised travelers to exercise caution while in Somalia, review personal security plans, notify trusted individuals of travel and movement plans, stay alert in locations frequented by tourists or Westerners, and stay updated by following local media and news outlets. However, there have been no reports of any incidents at the airport.
Turkish Airlines has up to six weekly flights from Istanbul to Mogadishu this month. Flightradar24 shows that the airline has resumed services to the Somali capital. Its April 10 flight operated normally, arriving in Mogadishu at 08:24. Daallo Airlines also resumed its service to the airport, with Flight D3169 landing at 08:32.
There are about 12 airlines with scheduled passenger flights to Mogadishu, connecting the airport with various destinations in Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. Flydubai and Qatar Airways operate two and four weekly flights to Mogadishu, respectively. Other airlines include Freedom Airline Express, Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways, and Uganda Airlines.

Somalia's air transport sector
Over the last three months, Somalia's air transport sector has come under the spotlight for various reasons. In separate developments, airlines flying over the Horn of Africa have reported multiple incidents of receiving conflicting instructions from air traffic controllers amid the airspace dispute between Somalia and the unrecognized territory of Somaliland.
Hostile Territory: The Effects Of Somalia & Somaliland's Airspace Dispute
In the latest incident, the Somaliland Civil Aviation and Airports Authority (SCAAA) reported a near miss involving an Emirates Boeing 777 and an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 MAX . However, Emirates and other industry experts disputed the claims. The report came about a month after an Ethiopian Airlines Airbus A350 and a Qatar Airways 787 nearly collided over Somaliland. In this case, TCAS stepped in to avert disaster .
While there have been several incidents and safety concerns, the Somali government is also taking strides to improve the country's aviation sector. In January 2024, the Ministry of Transport and Aviation opened the country's first MRO facility in over three decades . The center, known as the Blue Hangar, is expected to contribute towards improving safety in Somalia. Furthermore, the Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) recently inaugurated its new headquarters at Aden Adde International Airport.

Taylor Swift: Singapore’s Love Story
For Singapore based Swifties last month their wildest dreams came true. With the long awaited Eras tour coming to town, the Taylor gigs really were the hottest ticket. With Singapore having played a mastermind move to guarantee exclusivity on hosting the tour for the entire Asian region, the only place to be was Singapore if you were one of the lucky ones to secure a ticket. Singapore’s neighbours knew all too well that they’d missed out on the significant economic benefits generated by hosting Taylor, and Singapore might find just find itself the anti-hero in the next round of ASEAN meetings.
Estimates were that the 6 night run would increase Singapore’s GDP by 0.2% in the first quarter of 2024 – equivalent to around USD$200-300m - and anyone trying to get a hotel room or flight into Singapore during early March would have paid handsomely for the privilege, but do the capacity numbers show a big increase during those days?
Here at OAG we’ve crunched the numbers and while we wait to see how traffic numbers performed once they’re published in a month or two, we’ve taken a look at schedules data to see if we can spot any high spots.
LONG LIVE The swift effect?
Undoubtedly the 300,000 fans across Asia who reportedly attended were keen to avoid a cruel summer and spend whatever it took to get to Singapore, but did everyone travel on a Tuesday? Capacity in March 2024 was running at 21% on average ahead of March 2023, however in the 10 day period covered by the concert, we saw some spikes in capacity above that trend, in particular on Tuesday 5th March when seats were 26.9% higher than the same day the previous year. Friday 1st March also saw a bit of a surge, with capacity up by 25%, undoubtedly as those first arrivals flew in for the concert dates over that weekend. It also looks like nobody was leaving it until Saturday for the concert on the 9th, as capacity was just in line with trend that day.
LONG STORY SHORT...
The reality is that often airlines don’t have spare capacity to deploy in the case of music concerts – even the biggest ones in the world, or sporting events – especially at a time when the industry continues to struggle with a lack of resources, aircraft and ongoing maintenance issues. So we often see airlines pushing up prices to fill the seats they have, and undoubtedly this period was a profitable one for all concerned – for airlines, hotels, and the wider tourism ecosystem.
With fans hoping that Taylor might be persuaded to come back to other parts of Asia in 2025, we look forward to seeing where she goes next and if this triggers another exclusive deal. Karma perhaps for those countries who missed out?
