"Sledgehammer" Music Video Released
Music superstar Rihanna considered herself "honored" to be asked to record the theme song for the upcoming Star Trek Beyond . A lifelong Trek fan, whose father turned her on to Trek at a young age, Rihanna contributes the song "Sledgehammer," which not only will be featured on the Beyond soundtrack and can be heard in the third Beyond trailer, but which is available now as a single along with an accompanying music video.
Paramount Pictures has also just released a video in which Rihanna discuses her fandom and the importance to her of the song. She explains that Star Trek "has been a part of me since my childhood" and that it's "never left me." So, the decision to record "Sledgehammer" was entirely "automatic." As for the song itself, it "needed to be big, impactful, very emotional, dramatic and haunting... All at the same time."
Mission accomplished.
Star Trek Beyond will open on July 22. Keep an eye on StarTrek.com for additional news about the latest Enterprise adventure.

We’re Not Talking About The Beastie Boys Scene In ‘Star Trek Beyond’ Enough
[Spoilers for Star Trek Beyond , obviously]
There are certain memes that will continue to go viral until the end of time, or the bourbon bagel burger kills us all, whichever comes first. To use a recent example: Celine a Scene supposes that adding her 1997 titanically powerful ballad, “My Heart Will Go On,” to “epic scenes” makes them “even more emotional and epic.” It works really well, as does the Walk of Life Project , which is basically the same idea as Celine a Scene, except with “Walk of Life” by Dire Straits. It’s an effective concept for an untold amount of songs. Jurassic Park is a perfect movie… but wouldn’t it be even more perfect with “Walk the Dinosaur” playing during one of the T-rex scenes? Yes, yes it would.
Both Celine a Scene and Walk of Life Project, while clever, only work for certain moments, though. They have to be either poignant, or the final scene in the movie. Meanwhile, every film ever would be better with any Beastie Boys song at any point. Take a look at the Star Trek reboots as proof.
In Star Trek , we’re introduced to a young James T. Kirk right after he “borrows” a Corvette. As his step-father yells at him for stealing the car, Kirk ends the phone call and starts blasting “Sabotage,” which is still a favorite amongst angsty youngsters even in the mid-2240s (maybe this makes a little more sense than people in the 31st century being familiar with Beck ).
In Star Trek Into Darkness , we hear another Beastie Boys song — the Fat Boy Slim remix of “Body Movin'” — while Kirk canoodles with two nice Caitian girls.
Lastly, and most importantly, in Star Trek Beyond , “Sabotage” literally saves the Federation. That is not hyperbole — a Beastie Boys song from 1994 protects the good people and aliens of Yorktown from Krall’s Swarm; if it hadn’t, the Swarm would have moved on to other parts of the universe, leaving behind only death and destruction. It’s insane, so insane that if you haven’t seen Beyond , first off, sorry for ruining the ending for you, but also, it’s really hard to explain.
“Okay, so,” one would hypothetically begin, “Stringer Bell destroys the Enterprise with assistance from his bee-like alien ships, and also there’s this bioweapon artifact that’s going to kill everyone, or something, and the only way Kirk and his crew, including an alien named after Jennifer Lawrence , can stop Stringer’s bees is by playing a 20th century ‘classical’ music song, which disrupts the aliens. That song is by Jewish punks-turned-rappers Beastie Boys.” I don’t know how many cans of Romulan ale Simon Pegg had downed when he came up with that, but I’m glad he did.
I’m not the only one.
On another subject, i REALLY enjoyed Star Trek. Best use of Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" EVER. Adam Yauch would be proud. #RIPAdamandAnton — The Dō Hø (@NectarousD) July 26, 2016

Things that J.J. Abrams has brought to both Star Trek and Star Wars that can never be undone? @greggrunberg and Beastie Boys (Ello Asty) — Da7e Gonzales (@Da7e) July 25, 2016

https://twitter.com/walkselizabeth/status/756539545261408256
A lot of comparisons have been made between Star Trek Beyond and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (not only because J.J. Abrams’ name is attached to both), and how we’re living in a “ Star Wars world.” But having a pop song save millions of lives is unique to Star Trek . It can get away with using contemporary (for us in 2016) references like that because, well, Earth exists in the Star Trek universe; English isn’t even English, it’s “Galactic Basic Standard,” in Star Wars . The franchise, which is now 13 movies deep, should be taking these kind of goofy chances. It’s no crazier than Spock swimming with whales in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home , and that’s the most beloved Star Trek movie.
Star Trek is also working at a disadvantage. Before the Abrams reboot was released in 2009, the franchise was creatively drained and commercially ignored. Enterprise was a bust, and Nemesis barely made its $60 million budget back. The 1990s and 2000s weren’t a good time for Star Wars , either, but the dreaded prequels were still massive hits, and also, this is Star Wars we’re talking about. Everyone’s seen the original trilogy. (Do not @ me on Twitter if you haven’t seen the original trilogy.) The first three Trek movies? Not so much. The Empire Strikes Back earned $209 million at the box office in 1980. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan , released two years later: under $100 million. Casual movie fans don’t have the same familiarity with Kirk, Spock, and Bones as they do Luke, Han, and Leia. Add the eternally cool and universally beloved Beastie Boys into the mix, though (especially a song as well known as “Sabotage”), and Star Trek Beyond suddenly appeals to a lot more people.
We know there’s going to be a Star Trek 4 , with Chris Hemsworth returning as Kirk’s father. How can it top Star Trek Beyond ‘s use of the Beastie Boys? It can’t, unless Greg Grunberg — Abrams’ good luck charm who’s also been in all of the films — raps “So What’cha Want.” Start from there, Simon Pegg.
I would also accept Public Enemy.
Star Trek : Beyond reminded me of something important. And it goes like this, "Fight the powers that be!" – Public Enemy @StarTrekMovie — Broad Smile 33 (@EddiewilsonLevi) July 24, 2016

This 'Star Trek Beyond' Song Is Fire
Like any good summer blockbuster, Star Trek Beyond knows that the soundtrack is as important as the actual movie itself. What's a big summer action movie without a hit song to go with it, right? Luckily, the creatives behind Star Trek Beyond , out July 22, pulled out all the stops and enlisted one of the most beloved and badass singers to provide a major track. It's Rihanna who's responsible for "Sledgehammer," the Star Trek Beyond end-credits song , and it's undoubtedly gonna be one of the summer's catchiest tunes.
You might be wondering "why Rihanna?" as, after all, the singer isn't the first person you'd probably associate with the sci-fi franchise. Yet in a Star Trek Beyon d : Sledgehammer Featurette , Rihanna describes her love and passion for the series, saying that from an early age, she was engrossed in it and fell in love with the world and characters. To her, it seemed like a perfect fit to provide the haunting and impactful song for the end credits, and so she was "honored" to be part of the film.
As if getting Rihanna on-board wasn't enough, though, "Sledgehammer" was penned by everyone's favorite vocal superstar, Sia. Talk about a dynamic duo, right? The song is a slow ballad that builds, typical of many of Sia's other tracks, but with Rihanna's haunting vocals, it all manages to elevate the song. The lyrics would all have made for great AIM away messages back in the day, IMO, but some of my favorite lyrics are contained within the chorus:
I hit a wall, I thought that I would hurt myselfOh I was sure, your words would leave me unconsciousAnd on the floor I'd be lying cold, lifelessBut I hit a wall, I hit 'em all, watch the fallYou're just another brick and I'm a sledgehammerYou're just another brick and I'm a sledgehammer
To top it off, along with this new song, Beyond 's marketing team has released an accompanying music video that depicts Rihanna, with a wild and crazy look, on a desert planet performing what seems like magic. OK, so maybe I'm not doing the video justice — you'll just have to watch it and see for yourself how awesome it is.
So cool, right? In an interview with Entertainment Weekly , director Floria Sigismondi revealed that the music video was shot at the Trona Pinnacles, a few hours outside of Los Angeles. While the video is an homage to the world of Star Trek, it's definitely also its own story with a unique space-witch character. There's something else, too, that makes this music video truly awesome: it's the first one ever to be shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Leave it to Rihanna to drop a fire song for Star Trek Beyond and make history with its music video.

Star Trek Sets the Stage for Wesley Crusher's Galaxy-Shaking Return
- In Star Trek #19, by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly and Megan Levens, the stage is set for Wesley Crusher's epic return.
- Wesley's organization, the Travelers, are a powerful, but mysterious group who may hold the key to the franchise's god war.
- There could also be dire ramifications if Wesley meets his mother for the first time in years.
Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek #19!
Wesley Crusher has been suspiciously absent from Star Trek ’s franchise-shaking god war, but now the stage has been set for his return. Wesley’s mother, Doctor Beverly Crusher, was a key player in the god war–but little mention has been made of her god-like son. Now, in Star Trek #19, Doctor Crusher and the crew of the Theseus are heading to the Pleroma –and maybe Wesley Crusher as well.
Star Trek #19 is written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Megan Levens. In a text piece, made to resemble Doctor Crusher’s personal log, she reflects on her recent victories aboard the Theseus. She then switches gears, mentioning Wesley. Doctor Crusher wonders if there is anything she could have done to keep him closer. She also stresses she may not even have factored into his decision to leave.
Later, she talks with Captain Sisko about their impending trip to the Pleroma.
She tells him it is “personal” and he immediately knows she is going to look for Wesley.
Wesley Crusher Was More Than Just a Starfleet Cadet
Wesley had powers beyond normal humans.
Introduced as one of the main cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation , Wesley Crusher was a precocious kid living aboard the Enterprise. He would eventually leave the show midway through its fourth season to attend Starfleet Academy, but it never sat right with him. Disillusioned, he dropped out. In the seventh season Next Generation episode “Journey’s End,” Wesley learned of his true nature. Wesley leaves his family and friends behind to join the mysterious Travelers. As revealed in Star Trek #400, this was a one-way trip for Wesley, as he was not allowed to revisit his loved ones.
In Star Trek: Year Five , Wesley's bosses were referred to as the Aegis.
Wesley returned to the screen, as a full-fledged Traveler, in the season two finale of Star Trek: Picard. This episode also connected the Travelers to the Supervisors introduced in the Original Series’ second season. Prior to launching the flagship Star Trek title, Lanzing and Kelly had already handled the Supervisors in Year Five, where they were cast as the villains. In a recent interview with ScreenRant, Lanzing and Kelly admitted their story was completed before Picard’s season finale, but hinted that the two visions can be reconciled. The Pleroma may hold the key to Wesley Crusher’s return.
Star Trek's Darkest Timeline Turns Wesley Crusher into Picard's Opposite
Wesley's return to the star trek universe is almost guaranteed, what would be the cost of wesley's return.
In the ScreenRant interview, Lanzing and Kelly all but stated Wesley would be returning in a future issue of Star Trek. No details were given, but the Pleroma, the “Realm of the Gods,” is an entirely new place in the Star Trek universe. The Travelers and the Supervisors may have access to the Pleroma already, meaning Doctor Crusher could be reunited with Wesley sooner than later. However, the consequences of a Traveler returning home have never been fully explored. The ramifications of Wesley Crusher’s return to the Star Trek universe could be devastating.
Star Trek #19 is on sale now from IDW Publishing!
Original USS Enterprise model from ‘Star Trek’ returned to creator’s son
The first model of the USS Enterprise, the starship that appeared in the opening credits of the original “Star Trek” television series, has been returned to Eugene Roddenberry Jr., the son of the creator of the series, decades after it went missing.
“After a long journey, she’s home,” Roddenberry wrote on social media Thursday.
For die-hard Trekkies, the model’s disappearance had become the subject of folklore, so an eBay listing last fall, with a starting bid of $1,000, didn’t go unnoticed.
“Red alert,” someone in an online costume and prop-making forum wrote, linking to the listing.
Roddenberry’s father, Gene Roddenberry, created the television series, which first aired in 1966 and ran for three seasons. It spawned numerous spinoffs, several films and a franchise that has included conventions and legions of devoted fans with an avid interest in memorabilia.
The seller of the model was bombarded with inquiries and quickly took the listing down.
The seller contacted Heritage Auctions to authenticate it, the auction house’s executive vice president, Joe Maddalena, said Saturday. As soon as the seller, who said he had found it in a storage unit, brought it to the auction house’s office in Beverly Hills, California, Maddalena said he knew it was real.
“That’s when I reached out to Rod to say, ‘We’ve got this. This is it,’ ” he said, adding that the model was being transferred to Roddenberry.
Roddenberry, who is known as Rod, said Saturday that he would restore the model and seek to have it displayed in a museum or other institution.
He said reclaiming the item had only piqued his interest in the circumstances about its disappearance.
“Whoever borrowed it or misplaced it or lost it, something happened somewhere,” he said. “Where’s it been?”
It was unclear how the model ended up in the storage unit and who had it before its discovery.
The original USS Enterprise, a 33-inch model, was mostly made of solid wood by Richard Datin, a model maker for the Howard Anderson Co., a special-effects company that created the opening credits for some of the 20th century’s biggest TV shows.
An enlarged 11-foot model was used in subsequent “Star Trek” television episodes, and is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, where it was donated by Paramount Studios in 1974.
Roddenberry, who said he gave the seller a “reward” for its recovery but did not disclose the terms, assembled a group of “Star Trek” production veterans, model makers and restoration specialists in Beverly Hills to authenticate the find.
The group included a “Star Trek” art supervisor, Michael Okuda, and his wife, Denise, an artist on “Star Trek” television series and films, and Gary Kerr, a “Trek x-pert” who served as technical consultant for the Smithsonian during a 2016 restoration of the 11-foot model.
“We spent at least an hour photographing it, inspecting the paint, inspecting the dirt, looking under the base, the patina on the stem, the grain in the wood,” Roddenberry said.
“It was a unanimous ‘This is 100% the one,’ ” he said.
Gene Roddenberry, who died in 1991, kept the original model, which appeared in the show’s opening credits and pilot episode, on his desk.
Kerr compared the model to 1960s photos he had of the model on Roddenberry’s desk.
“The wood grain matched exactly, so that was it,” he said Saturday.
The model went missing after Roddenberry lent it to the makers of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture,” which was released in 1979, Maddalena said.
