In the most recent versions of iPadOS, Apple is finally bringing desktop capabilities to Safari on the iPad. This is possible in part because the iPad is finally separating itself from the iPhone, and iPadOS brings about a ton of new functionalities, especially with Safari. One of the biggest new features in Safari is the ability to download and manage files from webpages.

Since Safari now has a desktop-class browsing experience on the iPad , it's actually possible to download files directly on your iPad. Whether it's zip folders, documents, videos, music, software restore files, or whatever suits your fancy, you can do it right on your iPad.

Launch Safari on your iPad.
Navigate to any webpage that contains the file you want to download.
Tap on the link to the file that you want to download. If the website has the Download option hidden under a menu, just tap on it until you find the download link .

Click Download link for the file you want to download. It may be under a menu

Confirm whether you want to download the file by tapping on Download .

Click the Download button to confirm the download

If you change your mind about the download, just tap on the "X" . Your download will begin downloading immediately if you chose to download it.

Like on the desktop, you can view and manage your current downloads right in Safari.

Tap on the Downloads button in the toolbar (it's the arrow pointing down inside a circle). This reveals a popover menu with your current downloads.

When you have downloads, the download manager becomes visible

If a file is still downloading but you want to cancel it, just tap on the "X" .
If you want to resume the download, tap on the Resume button (looks like the refresh icon in Safari).
To view your file, tap on the magnifying glass to open up your Downloads folder in iCloud Drive.
This gets rid of any unfinished downloads as well, so be careful.
Any completed downloads will still remain in your Downloads folder in iCloud Drive.

Pause or Resume a download, stop the download and get rid of it, or Clear the entire list

After you download a file from Safari, you can quickly jump to it from the download manager by tapping on that magnifying glass icon. But if you want to view them manually after clearing out the list, you can do that too.

Launch Files on your iPad.
Tap on Browse .

Make sure to select iCloud Drive from the Locations side panel.
Locate the Downloads folder and tap it.

Tap on a file to view it.
If you want to share the file, tap on the Share button in the top right corner to bring up the Share Sheet .

One major feature that the popular mobile browser had previously lacked is a download manager, but Apple has now implemented the download functionality as they pushing iOS and iPadOS towards a more desktop-class computing experience. The download feature of Safari may not seem obvious at first since it’s a bit hidden in the browser, however.

In this article, we’ll be discussing exactly how you can download files from Safari on to your iPhone and iPad, and how to find and access those downloaded files on the device.

Although Safari’s download manager is discrete, downloading files from the mobile browser is a fairly simple and straightforward procedure. Simply follow the steps below to get started.

It wasn’t too long ago that iPhone and iPad did not have this functionality directly, except for saving certain file types like images and PDF files to Photos and iBooks type apps. This made some Android users criticize iOS for lacking the simple functionality to download files from the Safari web browser. But now that there’s a Files app, the Safari download manager is able to easily download files that can then be accessed through the iOS and iPadOS file system.

Until more recent iOS and ipadOS releases came out, iPhone and iPad users had to resort to third-party file manager and download manager apps that featured integrated web browsers to download files from the internet. If you ever used any of those to achieve the desired result, feel free to remove them because it’s probably not necessary to keep them around anymore.

If you use a popular third-party browser like Chrome or Firefox, you will not be able to download any files other than images or videos from the web, as they still lack a download manager. However, Mozilla is working on a download manager for Firefox, so we can expect other developers to add support for file downloads eventually too, and it’s quite likely that Chrome will gain the capability too.

From my iPhone SE 2020 on IOS 13.7, I see the down arrow next to the music choices, not on top where you show the red arrow. On top is still the reload icon, so I am a bit confused. So, If I go to a site where I want to download something that does not have a site specific arrow. What’s my next step ?

The down arrows next to each music title are the download links for each of those tracks. Once you tap on one of those and start downloading the respective file, the blue download manager icon (down arrow in a circle) will then appear on the top right next to the address bar. Just tap on it to see the download progress and to access the file when the download completes.

Great to now have a download manager, but why does apple always have to leave some absurd restriction in place? at least on iPadOS the download manager should have come with the option somewhere in settings to change where downloaded files will go if we want them to go somewhere other than the default downloads folder in iCloud drive. We need that if the iPad is expected to become our new computer, as Apple touts in its marketing, because every mac and pc has that option.

You can change the download destination from Safari on iPad and iPhone by going to the Safari Settings.

The whole file management system in iOS and iPadOS needs work though, it’s nowhere near the capability or ease of Mac or Windows.

No you can’t. Not in iOS 13. Maybe you’re running the iOS 14 beta and that has changed there, but not on iOS 13.

I can access downloaded files in the Downloads folder on iCloud Drive using a third-party iOS file manager.

However, that may be a result of me keeping most in my data in clouds, rather than locally.

When you want to download a file to an iPad , however, the experience is much less straightforward. iPads have no dedicated file storage system; instead, you have to specify where a file should be stored at the time of its download.

If you don't want to spend all your time assigning various download locations to different apps, the best thing to do is get the Google Drive or Dropbox app on your iPad and use these as catch-all spots for your downloads.

But wait… don’t rush to a third-party download manager. Managing your download, that too in a separate file manager app, is a tricky and daunting business. So, here’s good news, with iOS 13 and the changes made to Safari, you can manage your chaos (or should I say Downloads?) easily!

Here are some quick ways to manage your Safari downloads on your iPhone and iPad effortlessly. Let’s begin!

Pause/Resume/Cancel your downloads in Safari

Change default Safari downloads location on iPhone

Delete downloaded files in safari, auto-delete safari downloads on your iphone.

Locate the file/item you want to download and tap it.
Confirm download when prompted through the popup window.

Note : There’s also an alternate way to access your downloads. You can go to the Files application and select Downloads .

How to manage your downloads in Safari on the iPhone

Pause/resume/cancel your downloads in safari.

Tap the download icon at the top right corner of Safari.
Tap the ‘X’ symbol to pause or cancel your download.

Note : You can directly reach the downloaded location of a file by tapping the ‘ Search ‘ icon next to the file name.

In the Settings app, tap Safari and select Downloads .

One of these Safari tweaks is the addition of a proper download manager with iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, which is a big feature that's flown under the radar a bit.

Yes, Safari has a proper download manager and you can download pretty much any file off the Internet on this browser now. Let's first cover the basics.

Where is Safari download manager?

Just open Safari on iOS 13 or iPadOS 13 and tap any download link on the Internet. Now you'll see a downloads icon on the top right in Safari. Tap that downloads link and a list of recently downloaded items will appear.

How to download files using Safari on iPhone or iPad

Follow these steps for an overview of how this process works.

Open Safari .
Now go to your favourite website where you find things to download. Tap the download link. You will see a confirmation pop-up asking if you want to download the file. Tap Download .
Now you can tap the Downloads icon on the top-right to see the progress of the download. Once the download is complete, you can tap Clear to empty the list of downloaded items (this does not delete the files, just clears the list in Safari).
By default downloads are saved on iCloud Drive. To change download location go to Settings > Safari > Downloads .
Now you can select whether you want to store downloaded files on your iOS device locally or on the cloud.
There's another option in the Downloads page. It's called Remove Download List Items . You can tap that and choose whether you want to clear the list of downloaded items in Safari automatically or manually.

How to Access the Download Manager in Safari for iOS

With iOS 13, Apple has brought a similar feature to the mobile version of its Safari browser in the form of the Download Manager. Now, when you choose to download a file, such as an image or document, a little download icon is displayed in the top right corner of the screen.

You can tap the icon to check the status of your downloads, and tapping the magnifying glass next to a file will open its folder location, whether that's on your device or in the cloud.

How to Find Downloads on iPad [2024 Guide]

Generally, you can find most downloads on the iPad in the Downloads folder located within the Files app .
Open Files -> iCloud Drive -> Downloads to find saved files and PDFs on your iPad.
You can also find the downloaded files within their corresponding app.

On My [Device] folder has files stored locally on the Apple device you’re using.
iCloud Drive folder has all the files and folders that are synced to iCloud Drive. This includes Numbers, Pages, Keynote documents, and more.
The Files app also stores files in other cloud services and apps that you’re using, such as Google Drive, Dropbox, One Drive, and more.

Now that you know the basics, follow the below steps to find saved PDFs on your iPad:

Open the Files app on your iPad.
In case you don’t find it on the home screen, swipe down from the middle to open Spotlight Search. Then, type “files” in the search bar and select “ Files “.
Now, tap on the small icon present in the leftmost corner to reveal the left sidebar.

Next, tap on iCloud Drive.

Here, tap on the Downloads folder to see your saved files on your iPad.

Find Downloaded Apps on iPad

On your iPad’s home screen, keep swiping left until you see the App Library . It has all the apps, automatically sorted in helpful categories.

If you feel the categories are too cluttered, tap on the “App Library” to see the alphabetized list of your iPad apps.

You can also search for a specific app using the search bar at the top.

Find Downloaded Photos on iPad

You can also use the top search bar to find specific photos on your iPad. This is one of the most useful hidden iOS tricks that can make your life easier. Here’s how to search for a specific image in the Photos app:

In the Photos app , tap on the Menu icon from the left-most corner to see the left sidebar, and tap on the Search option.
If you wish to find a photo that was taken from your friend’s iPhone 15, start typing iPhone and tap the iPhone model from the drop-down menu.

This will reveal all the pictures from that particular iPhone model.
You can also use this method to find photos downloaded from Safari on your iPhone.

You may, at times, encounter an issue where Safari refuses to download photos, videos, audio, PDFs, documents, and other files from a website. In this article, we’ll explore common reasons why Safari may not be downloading files on iPhone, iPad, or Mac and provide solutions to help you get back to downloading with ease.

The issues you may be facing

Clicking the download link opens a new blank tab, and no file download starts.
Safari is refusing to begin file downloads from one or all sites.
File download starts, but it fails immediately in a second or two.
The download happens up to a point and then fails midway or just before completing.
Safari downloads a file but opens it and then deletes the original files (this happens with ZIP and other compressed files).

The solutions below should help fix all the above issues and also ones similar to them.

Before you begin

It’s possible that you’re not following the right steps to download the file. On Mac, it’s super easy, but on iPhone and iPad, downloading files may not be as obvious. With that said, even if the file has been downloaded, you may not know where it’s saved and how to find it. So, look at these tutorials, if needed:

Retry the download

In many cases, initiating the download again does the trick. Try hitting the download link again, and it should work. If not, refresh the webpage and click the download button again.

Note: Some websites put downloads behind a login wall. So, make sure to honor that.

Pause and resume the download

The download may look like it has started, but it will pause or fail in a few seconds. If that happens, hit the tiny retry button a few times, and it should start the download. If not, hit the download link again on the website.

Check your internet

Make sure your iPhone, iPad, or Mac is connected to a stable Wi-Fi, Cellular Data, or Ethernet connection and the internet is working properly.

Allow the website to download files

When you try to download a file from a website for the first time, it doesn’t start immediately. Instead, you will see an alert asking your permission to allow this site to download and save files locally or not. Make sure you allow that. If you choose to block the download, follow these steps to fix it:

On iPhone and iPad: Hit the download link again on the website and tap Allow or Download when asked. If you don’t see the Allow button, clear your browser data.

On Mac: Open Safari and click Safari > Settings from the top menu bar. Now, go to Websites > Downloads > click the drop-down menu next to the website name and choose Allow . While you’re here, also make sure it says ‘ Ask ‘ or ‘ Allow ‘ next to ‘ When visiting other websites .’

Force Quit and reopen Safari

On iPhone and iPad: Swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold or double-press the Home button to enter App Switcher. From here, drag the Safari app card all the way up to close it .

On Mac: Save your work in any other open Safari tabs. Next, click the Apple icon  and choose Force Quit . Here, select Safari and click Force Quit .

Now reopen Safari and try downloading the file again.

Use alternate download links

You may see more than one download link on a website. If one link fails to work, try the other one. Note: Sometimes, picking a different download quality (for a video, audio, or image) should do the trick.

Set Safari download location to anything other than iCloud Drive

If you have set Safari to download files to iCloud Drive, switch it to any other local storage folder using the steps below:

On iPhone or iPad: Settings > Safari > Downloads > On My iPhone or Other .

On Mac: Open Safari and click Safari > Settings from the top menu bar. From the General section, select Downloads , Desktop , or any local folder next to ‘ File download location .’

Stop Safari from automatically opening files after download

By default, Safari on Mac is set to open files after downloading them. That means if you download a ZIP file, Safari will automatically unzip it after downloading. In rare cases, this may cause the download to fail, not complete successfully, or not even start in the first place if the file you’re trying to download is incompatible. Therefore, it’s best to turn it off from Safari Settings > General > uncheck ‘ Open “safe” files after downloading .’

Restart your device

If Safari is unable to download files due to minor glitches, save your work and do a restart .

Make sure your device has sufficient free space

Clear Safari history and cache

One of the most reliable solutions to fix Safari issues is clearing its history and website data .

On iPhone and iPad, you can do this from Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data .

On Mac, click History from the top menu bar and select Clear History .

Try disabling a recently installed Safari extension

If you could download files earlier but can’t after installing an extension, then that extension is likely the culprit. Remove it, restart your device, and now you should have no problem downloading files.

On Mac: Go to Safari Settings > Extensions > select the extension and click Uninstall .

Update Safari

Safari updates are tied to system updates on iPhone and iPad. So, go to Settings app > General > Software Update and get the latest version of the operating system.

Customize your Safari settings on iPad

Customize your start page

Every time you open a new tab, you begin on your start page. You can customize your start page with new background images and options.

The start page in Safari, which shows favorite websites, websites shared with you, and websites saved to your Reading List. At the bottom of the screen is the Edit button.

Scroll to the bottom of the page, then tap Edit.

Choose options for your start page.

Favorites: Display shortcuts to your favorite bookmarked websites. See Add a website to Favorites .

Frequently Visited: Go straight to the websites you visit most.

Shared with You: See links shared with you in Messages. See Find links shared with you .

Privacy Report: Stay updated on how many trackers and websites Safari blocked from tracking you. See View the Privacy Report .

Siri Suggestions: As you search, allow websites shared in Calendar and other apps to appear.

Reading List: Show webpages currently in your Reading List. See Add the current webpage to your Reading List .

Recently Closed Tabs: Go back to tabs you previously closed.

Note: Your custom start page settings are updated on all your Apple devices where you have Use Start Page on All Devices turned on, and you’re signed in with the same Apple ID using two-factor authentication .

Change the text size for a website on Safari

Tap the large A to increase the font size or the small A to decrease it.

Change the display controls for a website on Safari

You can hide the search field, switch to Reader, and more.

Hide the search field: Tap Hide Toolbar (tap the top of the screen to get it back).

See a streamlined view of the webpage: Tap Show Reader (if available).

To return to the normal view, tap Hide Reader.

See what the webpage looks like on a desktop computer: Tap Request Desktop Website (if available).

You can also adjust Safari settings in Accessibility settings. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Per-App Settings. Tap Add App, choose Safari, then tap Safari to adjust the settings.

Choose where to save downloads

When you download a file in Safari, you can choose whether to save it to iCloud or on your iPad.

iCloud Drive: Select this option to save downloads to the Downloads folder in iCloud Drive. This allows you to access the downloaded file on any iPhone, iPad, or Mac where you’re signed in with the same Apple ID .

On My iPad: Select this option to save downloads to the Downloads folder on your iPad.

Share website passwords with a group

You can create a group of trusted contacts and share a set of passwords. Passwords stay up to date for everyone in the group, and you can remove someone at any time.

Adjust privacy settings for Safari

This article explains where to find downloads on an iPad. Instructions apply to iPads with iOS 11 and above.

Unlike PCs and Macs, the iPad has no designated Downloads folder where all downloaded files immediately go. And, the iOS file system isn't as easy to browse as an Android file system.

A downloaded file's location largely depends on the app you're in when you access that file, although things have become a little easier with the Files app's introduction in iOS 11.

Save your files to a location you can easily find again. While you have many options, here's how to save files from commonly used apps.

Saving a File From Mail

Frequently, you'll want to save an attachment from an email you receive. Here's how to choose where the file goes.

Open the relevant email.

Tap the Attachment icon .

Tap Options in the top right of the screen.

Choose where to send the file. Depending on the file, you can usually tap Save Image for images, Copy to iBooks for PDFs, or Save to Files to save it to the Files app for general use.

Tap the More icon to find more options.

If you tap Save to Files , choose to either save the file to your iCloud Drive or directly to the iPad, then tap Add .

If you want to access the file from other iOS or Mac devices, tap iCloud Drive .

You've successfully saved the file to your chosen location.

Saving a File From Safari

Here's how to save a file from the default web browser, Safari.

Open the file in Safari.

Tap Options .

Choose where to save it.

You may need to scroll to the right to find more options such as Save to Files , depending on how many apps are available to use the file.

Saving an Image From Safari

Saving an image is a simple process.

Open the image in Safari.

Hold your finger to the image, then release it after a moment or two to bring up the dialog box.

Tap Save Image to save the image to your Photos folder.

If you've downloaded a file and you're unsure where it went, check some of the likely locations.

If you're searching for a downloaded image file, it's almost certainly stored within your Photos app.

If you tap Copy to iBooks , PDF files are sent or copied to iBooks so you can easily browse the files as you would a book or manual.

Other Files

Any other files likely ended up in the Files App. This app brings together all your files across iCloud, so it can also include documents from your Mac or other iOS devices.

If you have third-party apps such as Google Drive or Dropbox installed on your iPad, they'll show up on the Share menu when you're saving a file. Remember to check there if you prefer to use a non-Apple-based solution for your file storage.

Delete photo downloads: Open Photos , tap Select , choose photos, and tap Trash Can > Delete Photos . Video downloads: Go to Photos > Videos and follow the same steps. Delete music downloads from the Apple Music app. Other downloads: Open Files , tap Browse , tap a folder > More (three dots) > Select , choose your files, and tap the Trash Can .

To turn on automatic downloads on an iPad , open Settings and tap App Store . Under Automatic Downloads , toggle on Apps . Any purchases or free downloads made on your other devices will automatically download to your iPad, as well.

To download apps to an iPad , tap the App Store > Apps . Browse apps or search for an app by name. When you find an app you want, tap its price or tap Get for free apps. Tap Buy or Install and enter your Apple ID if prompted.

If you've downloaded files to your iPhone or iPad, accessing them might be confusing compared to a Mac or PC. There's a special folder where iOS and iPadOS store downloads, and you can find it via the Files app .

Most of your downloads go to the Downloads folder on iPhone or iPad. The Download folder is located either under iCloud Drive, On This iPhone, or On This iPad. You can find it in the Files app.

Some files, like pictures, present a different download prompt so that they're accessible in the correct app. For example, when you download an image from Safari , the long-press context menu will say "Save to Photos" so it can be accessed in the Photos app. This behavior varies a bit between file formats, so we'll explain which file types are saved where.

To find downloads on your iPhone or iPad, you must open the Files app, select the "Browse" tab, and navigate to iCloud Drive > Downloads.

To launch the Files app, swipe one finger downward from the middle of the Home screen to open Spotlight Search , type "Files" into the search bar, then select "Files."

Select the "Browse" tab at the bottom, and then tap the "Downloads" folder under Favorites.

The list under "Locations" will vary depending on which apps you have installed, but your device will always have an "On My [Device]" listing and an iCloud Drive location. The Downloads folder may be under "iCloud Drive" or under "On My iPhone" or "On My iPad", depending on how you've configured your device.

You can change the default download location from iCloud Drive to On My iPhone in Safari . If you have done that, be sure to check the new location you set instead of the default "iCloud Drive" location.

You'll see a list of all the files you've downloaded onto your phone or tablet. During the download process, you can save a file to a folder other than "Downloads." If you don't see the file you're looking for, tap the Back arrow at the upper left, and then tap another folder.

Once you locate the file you want, you can tap it to preview it, or tap and hold it to open a pop-up menu. Then, you can move, copy, or rename the file, along with other operations .

When you're done, just exit the Files app. The next time you open Files, the file you're looking for will be right where you left it.

To find photos you downloaded to your phone, open the Photos app. Tap the Photos app icon on the Home Screen, or search "Photos" in the App Library.

Once you've opened the Photos app, you can tap the search bar at the top and search "Safari" to find Photos you downloaded through Safari. You can also just browse through your photos if you don't mind searching manually.

If you download an image and it doesn't show up in the Photos app, check the Downloads folder, like we outlined above. Once you locate it, you can copy the image to the Photos app .

If you just download an audio file (like a song) using Safari or any other browser, you'll need to use the Files app and open the Downloads folder to access it.

However, in all likelihood, you'll download your music with a dedicated app, like Apple Music or Spotify. In that case, just open the app and you'll see your downloaded music file in the app's library.

You can tap "Edit" then sort by genre, playlist, artist, whether or not a file is downloaded, and countless other criteria. It makes sorting through a large library easier.

Of course, you aren't stuck downloading things to only one folder. The default download location can be changed pretty easily. Also keep in mind that any apps you use to manage downloads, like the Documents app , might create a separate download folder. You can typically view of change the download location in an app's settings.

To find an app you downloaded to your iPhone or iPad, keep swiping left on your Home screen until you reach a page with "App Library" at the top. All the apps installed on your phone can be accessed here. Your iPhone tries to sort the apps you have installed into helpful categories that you can scroll through.

If the categories list is too cluttered for you, tap "App Library" at the top to display an alphabetized list of your apps.

The alphabetized list is also searchable. Tap "App Library" again, then start typing when the keyboard appears.

Once you've found the app you want, there are a few things you can do with it.

If you just tap the app name or the icon, the app will launch. Long-press the app icon to display app-specific controls, like "Add to Calendar" in the Calendar app for example, or to uninstall the app. If you long-press the app name and drag to the left, you can place the app icon on your home screen for easier access in the future.

Where Do Downloads Go in Safari on iPhone or iPad?

While browsing the web using Safari on your iPhone or iPad, you can download images, documents or PDFs by tapping links on websites. When you tap a link, a popup will appear saying, “Do you want to download ‘file.name’?” When you tap the Download option, the item will be downloaded onto your iPhone or iPad, and it will be saved to your default download location, which you can change.

It appears that some users are having trouble locating downloaded files. So how can you find them? Where is the Downloads folder?

Where to find Downloads in Safari

You can easily see the items that you have downloaded by tapping the AA icon at the left end of the Smart Search field in Safari and selecting Downloads, as you can see in the screenshot below. If you do not see the Downloads option, it means that your download list is empty. Depending on your settings, your list may be emptied automatically by Safari.

You may also notice a blue arrow. This blue arrow may appear next to the AA icon. This blue arrow icon indicates that you have recently downloaded an item.

As explained above, you can access the downloaded items in Safari. After you open Downloads, you can share, save, AirDrop, print or annotate the downloaded item. This is called the Downloads list. By default, this list will be emptied after one day. Note that just items in the list will be removed. Your downloaded file will still exist somewhere on your iPhone. There are a few settings you can customize.

Where are downloaded files saved on your iPhone or iPad?

By default, downloaded items will be saved in the Downloads folder in the Files app. This folder can be located in either iCloud Drive or On My iPhone. You can also change the location. Here is how:

Open Settings .
Tap Safari .
Tap Downloads .
iCloud Drive – Downloads. If you select this option, your downloaded items will be available on your other devices too, if you are signed in with the same Apple ID.
On My iPhone or iPad – Downloads. If you select this option, your downloaded items will only be stored on your iPhone or iPad.
Or tap Other to select another location of your choosing in iCloud or on your device.

How to customize when items are removed from the Downloads list

By default, Safari will remove an item from the list after one day. However, you can change this. Here is how:

Tap Remove Download List Items .
After one day : Your list will be cleared after one day.
Upon successful download : This will make it so there will be no Downloads list in Safari. Any item you download will directly go to the download folder.
Manually : This will make it so the list will stay intact unless you clear it. To clear it, open the Downloads List (tap AA, then Downloads in Safari), then tap Clear to delete all. If you want to delete individual items, swipe left and tap Delete.

Sure, most college students need a laptop these days, but having a tablet on hand can give a student an extra edge -- a more portable option that can easily be taken to classes, used while lying in bed, or just serve as a lighter-weight tool when a full-featured laptop or Chromebook isn't required.

Best entry-level iPad for most students : Apple iPad (10th generation)

Best ipad for remote learning : apple ipad air (5th generation), best ipad for using as an e-reader or note taking : apple ipad mini (6th generation), best ipad for running productivity apps : apple 11-inch ipad pro (4th generation), best ipad for creatives and power users : apple 12.9-inch ipad pro (6th generation).

Since iPads can automatically sync with the iCloud, iPhones and MacBooks, all important information is always available when and where it's needed. When a college student combines the capabilities of an iPad with an optional keyboard and Apple Pencil stylus, it becomes an even more versatile and powerful tool. And best of all, we've found iPads under $450.

Once you choose an iPad model, you'll need to decide how much internal storage the tablet will have and whether it'll have a cellular data connection. Keep in mind, an iPad's internal storage can't be upgraded after purchase, and each iPad model comes in a different selection of colors.

Choose the perfect iPad for college

Our in-house team of tech experts are extremely knowledgable about all of Apple's tablets and can help you decide which option is perfect.

All iPad models run the same version of the iPadOS operating system, come with the same collection of preinstalled apps, and all are compatible with all of Apple's services (including iCloud, Apple Music, Apple News, Apple Arcade, AppleTV+ and Apple Fitness+). The main differences between each iPad model are the touchscreen display size and type, storage capacity options, the speed of the tablet's processor, the overall size of the unit itself and the price.

The iPad (10th generation) is the entry-level and budget friendly option. It takes advantage of a 10.9 inch Liquid Retina display and runs using Apple's older A14 Bionic processor. The tablet supports the 1st generation Apple Pencil ($95) or Apple Pencil USB-C ($69), along with the Magic Keyboard Folio ($239).

This version of the iPad comes in four colors -- blue, pink, yellow or silver. It works with a wide range of note taking, personal productivity and time management apps. Built into the tablet are stereo speakers, along with microphones and a 12MP front- and 8MP rear-facing camera, which together make it easy to participate in video calls.

For wireless connectivity, the iPad (10th generation) supports Wi-Fi 6. Beyond just using it for school work, the tablet can also be used for playing games, streaming TV shows and movies, and much more. Along with the apps that come preinstalled, several million more are available from the App Store, so a user can truly customize their tablet.

As an entry-level iPad, this model comes with just two internal storage capacity options -- 64GB or 256GB. For many college students, 64GB won't allow the tablet to hold enough content, so the 256GB version ($597) may be a more viable option. As with all iPad models, for slightly more money, a WI-Fi + Cellular version is also available, but since most college campuses, libraries and dorms have good Wi-Fi coverage, the cellular option shouldn't be needed.

The iPad Air is a bit thinner and lighter than the iPad Pro models (and also less expensive). This version of the tablet is equipped with a 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display and comes in five casing color options.

Just like the iPad (10th generation), this version of the tablet is only offered with 64GB or 256GB of internal storage. For college students, you may want to consider the 256GB version ($650).

One thing that sets the iPad Air apart from the iPad 10th generation is that this model supports the 2nd generation Apple Pencil stylus ($115) and the Apple Magic Keyboard ($265) or Smart Keyboard Folio ($189). It also runs using the more powerful M1 processor, which gives the tablet faster performance.

The iPad Air measures 9.74 x 7.02 x 0.24 inches and weighs about one pound. We selected this tablet as the best for remote learning because it's lightweight and comfortable to hold for extended periods when you're engaged in a video call, virtual study session, or while participating in online classes. It can also be propped up on a table during a video call. Using the iPad's Center Stage feature, the tablet's front-facing camera will then keep the user centered in the frame as they move around during a video call.

As its name suggests, the iPad Mini does everything that one of the larger iPads does, but comes in a more compact size that features an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display. This version of the iPad comes in your choice of four casing colors. And like the iPad (10th generation) and iPad Air (5th generation), you can only choose between a version with 64GB or 256GB of internal storage.

Once again, for a college student, it never hurts to go for more storage with the 256GB/Wi-Fi only version ($617). All of the iPad models offer up to a 10-hour battery life and have a front- and rear-facing camera, built in microphones and internal speakers. The iPad Mini runs using the older Apple A15 Bionic processor.

Optional add-ons include the 2nd generation Apple Pencil stylus ($115), which transforms the tablet into a powerful and easy to hold portable notepad (when a third-party note taking app is used). Some of the note taking apps we recommend and that are available from the App Store include Notability, Goodnotes 6, Evernote and Microsoft OneNote.

Many college students who plan to rely on their iPad as an e-reader also prefer this smaller size because it's easier to hold during extended reading sessions. It measures 7.69 x 5.3 x 0.25 inches and weighs just 0.65 pounds.

The most powerful iPad models -- with the most detailed, highest resolution and most vibrant touchscreens, that offer a variety of internal storage options, and that run using Apple's M2 processor -- are the iPad Pro tablets.

The iPad Pros come in two screen sizes -- 11 inches or 12.9 inches. You can also choose between 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB or 2TB of internal storage and between two casing colors (space gray or silver). For a college student, we recommend at least 256GB.

This 11-inch iPad Pro works with the optional 2nd generation Apple Pencil ($129) and Apple Magic Keyboard ($299).

This iPad measures 9.75 x 7.02 x 0.23 inches and weighs 16.44 ounces. Unlike other iPad models, this one includes four internal speakers, five microphones and support for Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

Thanks for the iPad's M2 processor, this tablet does a great job with multitasking and running apps college students can use to get their work done -- like Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Apple Pages, Apple Number, Apple Keynote, or any of the Google Workspace apps. It can also run educational apps that require that extra boost of processing power to run smoothly.

The 12.9-inch iPad Pro is currently Apple's top-of-the-line and most powerful tablet. It takes advantage of a Liquid Retina XDR display that uses mini-LED technology. How To Use Delta Emulator and Play Nintendo Games on iOS

While emulators are legal in the U.S., ROMs are a bit more complicated.
The Delta app requires iOS 14 or later.
The app is also available for iPad, Mac, and Vision Pro.

Gamers, your time is here: the Delta emulator app is now available for iOS, and with it arrives a wealth of emulation and features. This expansive app hosts an impressive selection of classic video game consoles, providing the ability to play thousands of retro games on your iPhone. Below, I’ll show you everything you need to know to start gaming.

What to Know About the Delta Emulator

Apple finally eased restrictions on emulators, and Delta is the second Apple-approved option to be officially listed on the App Store. What I love about it is that it’s 100% free. You can play a wide variety of retro Nintendo games without having to sit through ads—note that very few free emulators offer an ad-free experience. You can learn more about the Delta emulator here .

What Emulators Are Available on the Delta App?

The following emulators (game systems) are available through the Delta app:

How To Get Nintendo DS Games on Delta Game Emulator?

While every emulator available within the app works as is, there are specific BIOS files that you’ll need for the Nintendo DS emulator. I can’t link to them for copyright reasons, but you can easily find them on any search engine. After you download the necessary files, remember to select Save to Files from the Share menu.

The BIOS files needed for the Nintendo DS emulator are as follows:

Once you’ve downloaded these files, adding them to the Delta emulator is easy—here’s how:

From here, the Nintendo DS emulator will be fully operational. However, note that you may need to use iTunes File Transfer to add games—DS ROMs are typically several gigabytes large. Downloading them through your iPhone may be a hassle, so I’ll cover this more below.

How to Download ROMs for the Delta Emulator

Again, pirating officially licensed games breaks copyright laws, so I won’t be linking to them. However, homebrew games, and even some ROM hacks, are typically okay to share. Places like Homebrew Hub can have a library of legal, independently created games to play.

ROMs will either be in a compressed file (such as .ZIP) or a rather obvious file extension (.GBA for a Game Boy Advanced game, for example). I’ve had no problems importing both, but mileage may vary on compressed files. Should one give you issues, try extracting the file.

With that in mind, there are two primary ways to add ROMs to the Delta app: either through iTunes/Folder or the iOS Files app. Let’s take a look at both, as one can be easier than the other.

1. Adding ROMs Via the iOS Files App

Personally, this is the easiest way to add ROMs since it doesn’t require a computer. However, guiding your ROM downloads to the right place can be tricky.

For this how-to guide, I’ll download the game Sips from Homebrew Hub.

First, navigate to the Homebrew Hub page for Sips .
Scroll down and click Download Rom .

This method can be spotty depending on the browser you use, so make sure the ROM file makes its way to your Files app.

2. Adding ROMs Using iTunes

This method may be easier for those who have a hard time downloading ROMs directly on their iPhone, although you’ll have to use a Mac or PC. Let’s take a look.

First, download the ROM.
Next open iTunes .
Navigate to the iPhone icon.
Select File Sharing from the left-hand column.
Click the Delta app and then Drag and Drop the ROMs you want into this section.

3. Adding ROMs Using Finder

If your Mac is running macOS Catalina or later, you’ll need to use Finder.

Connect your iPhone to your Mac, then select your iPhone from a Finder window.

As you can probably tell, it’s pretty easy to add ROMs to the Delta app once you have the files in the correct location. The hardest part is probably getting them there.

How to Add Emulator Skins

One of the cooler features of Delta is it lets you change emulator skins. This is really easy to do, plus you can find tons of skins on sites like Delta GitHub . Adding skins is similar to adding ROMs, so again, ensure the skins are in your Files folder.

You can now select the imported skin/s on Delta.

How to Remap Controllers in Delta

If you need to remap a controller, simply follow these steps:

Select NES to open the drop-down menu and choose the controller you want to edit.
Now, tap the button you want to change and press a button on the physical controller to remap it.

Adding a controller is usually as simple as navigating to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone, checking if the controller is discoverable, and then selecting it from the Other Devices list.

Additional Controls and Options

Once a game is running, you can open an additional menu that lets you fast-forward through scenes, hold down buttons, and even enable cheats. You’ll see this menu on the main screen while playing. It’s also where you’ll find your options to save and load games. You can save games within emulators, although I suggest using the Delta app’s Save function—it’s more reliable and accurate. Take a look around this section to see what you find.

First and foremost, Private Browsing keeps the website pages you visit out of your History . The aim is to prevent someone else from seeing which pages you have visited if they have access to your phone or computer.

In Safari, Private Browsing does a lot more than just hide URLs. It also:

Prevents recent searches from showing up in your history.

However, it’s important to note that Private Browsing does not stop you from being tracked altogether. Websites you visit will still be able to use various methods to track you, and will still have access to all data that you send them.

On macOS, iOS, and iPadOS, Safari groups private tabs together, and separates them from non-private tabs. On Mac, each Safari window is either private or non-private, and can have as many tabs as you want.

On iPhone, you can switch between private and non-private modes, each of which shows all tabs belonging to that mode.

You can spot when you’re viewing a private tab with these signs:

The address bar has a dark background. This may be less noticeable if you’re using Dark Mode .
On Mac, you’ll see a prominent Private indicator in the title bar.
On iPhone, you’ll see Private alongside the site URL at the bottom of your screen.

The steps to enter Private Browsing mode are nearly identical on an iPhone and iPad. The only difference is that the tab icon is at the bottom of the screen on iOS and the top on iPadOS.

Long-press the tab icon (two overlapping pages) on the bottom-right (iPhone) or top-right (iPad) of your screen.
Tap the New Private Tab menu item.
If locked, enter your passcode to unlock Private Browsing.

You can enter Private Browsing mode on macOS using either a menu item or a keyboard shortcut:

Open the File menu and choose New Private Window .
Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Cmd + n .
Use the browser as you normally would. Any tabs you open from this window will open in the same window, in private mode.

You may want to prevent users of an iPhone or iPad from using Private Browsing mode at all. To do so:

Open the Settings app.
Tap on Screen Time .
Under RESTRICTIONS , click on Content & Privacy Restrictions .
If not already enabled, press the toggle next to Content & Privacy Restrictions to enable.
Tap Content Restrictions .
Change the Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

The option to enter private mode will now be gone.

On macOS, the wording of certain options differs slightly, but the overall process is near-identical to iOS:

Open System Settings via the Apple menu.
Click on Screen Time in the left panel.
Under the Restrictions section, click on Content & Privacy .
Click Content Restrictions .
Change the Access to Web Content setting to Limit Adult Websites .

Private Browsing will now be unavailable in Safari, although any existing private windows will stay open.

Of course, anyone can re-enable Private Browsing using the same process, in reverse. However, you can use Screen Time’s Lock Screen Time Settings option to set a passcode and enforce the setting permanently.
