Park Plaza Waterloo Hotel

Our accommodation at the Park Plaza Waterloo is in a premium location, set close to the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. It is also an easy walk to the London Eye, London Aquarium and a short tube ride to the West End theatre district, and is surrounded by restaurants and cafes. Importantly, it is only 1km from the water taxi that takes athletes to the race expo, and is an easy 1.8km walk from the finish line in Pall Mall.

The hotel is within a short walk from Waterloo and Lambeth tube stations, offering links to the top attractions of the city, and is one of London’s best-rated hotels.

Event Location

The TCS London Marathon takes place in the heart of London, starting in Blackheath in Lewisham and finishing on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.

Getting There

We recommend flying into Heathrow airports for long-haul international services. Both of these airports offer train/underground services direct to the centre of London. Our team hotel is accessible via the Bakerloo Line, exiting at Lambeth North Station.

Location Highlights

London, the capital of England and the United Kingdom, is a 21st-century city with history stretching back to Roman times. At its centre stand the imposing Houses of Parliament, the iconic ‘Big Ben’ clock tower and Westminster Abbey, site of British monarch coronations. Across the Thames River, the London Eye observation wheel provides panoramic views of the South Bank cultural complex, and the entire city.

The weather in the London during race time in April is around 15 degrees, so we advise our runners and tour members to pack warm clothes. The nights can also be very cold.

London Marathon Ultimate Guide

Last Updated on October 3, 2023

As one of the six main world marathon majors, the London Marathon takes you through the heart of London and past many iconic attractions and locations. So how can you compete, when does it take place, what is the route and where can you stay? All is explained below.

London Marathon guide

Table of Contents

When Does It Take Place

The London Marathon normally takes place every April each year and usually involves around 50,000 runners, both professional and amateur runners.

  • April annually

How to Enter the London Marathon

In recent years, the marathon has been sponsored by the Virgin Money group and so the race is often known as the ‘Virgin London Marathon’.

For this reason (unless the sponsor changes), to run in the event you have to apply through the official Virgin London Marathon website here .

*The event is always over-subscribed, meaning that more people always apply to run in the marathon than are accepted.

The main ways to get a place in the race is to:

  • Ballot : Enter the main ballot (you will basically need to be running for a charity to have a chance to be accepted)
  • Charity Places : You can apply through one of the charity websites that have a set number of places for runners in the London Marathon. A great example of this are Water Aid ( see their marathon runners page ) and the Oxfam marathon page – for runners willing to run on behalf of these charities. You can find a full list of charity places here .
  • Good for Age Places : There are normally 6000 places kept aside for UK-based runners who meet the time requirement for their age group. You can see the age/times here that you need to meet for the ‘Good for Age places.
  • Athletics Club Entries : You can also get accepted as a competitor for the marathon through your local athletics club. Several thousand places are allocated for members of British athletics clubs. You can find out more from your athletics club secretary.
  • International Runners Ballot : Another option and suitable if you are applying from outside of the UK, is to apply in the ballot as an international runner. You can learn more here .

The London Marathon is now over 40 years old, having first started back in 1981, with less than 7,000 entrants. The race has since grown six-fold with over 40,000 participants each year.

This 26-mile route takes in many well-known sights in the center of London and is a mainly flat course.

As a runner, you get to enjoy running alongside the iconic River Thames and around Blackheath before finishing in The Mall near St. James Palace.

The marathon route has undergone a few changes in its time, including the moving of the finishing post from Constitution Hill to Westminister Bridge in 1982 due to construction work.

The finishing line stayed there for 12 years before it was moved back to the Mall.

As well as being a way for people to push themselves to their physical limits, the London Marathon is also a way for people to raise money for charity.

In fact, the London Marathon is a record holder in that it is in the Guinness Book of Records for being the largest charity fundraising event in the world.

Since its founding in 1981, the marathon has raised over £500 million for charity, raising £47.2 million in 2007 alone.

Along the route as a runner, expect also to see up to 500,000 spectators lining the streets of London to cheer you on.

The marathon also attracts a range of runners from elite athletes to people doing it for fun (often in fancy dress).

In fact, the slowest time to complete the marathon is held by Lloyd Scott, who in 2002 did the route in a 110lb deep-sea diving suit.

10 Tips for Running the London Marathon

Here’s a great video with 10 useful tips for running the London Marathon from Ben Parkes, the athlete, and fitness coach.

Rules for Entering the London Marathon

  • You must be 18 years old or older

London Hotels and Accommodation

There is a wide range of accommodation options as you might imagine, in London.

Whether visiting London to participate in the marathon or to watch the marathon, there are hotels, hostels, B&Bs, and accommodation types to cover every range.

If you are planning a trip to London, here are five hotels I have personally stayed in and can recommend.

1. The Connaught Hotel

Located in the heart of Mayfair, The Connaught is an excellent hotel. Stylish, in a great location (close to sights such as the Marble Arch, Buckingham Palace, and Trafalgar Square).

This five-star hotel has excellent facilities including a health club, meeting rooms, a nice bar area, and much more. It is a fairly pricey option though hence why I only stayed one night 🙂

2. The Berkeley Hotel

The Berkeley is located in Knightsbridge a stone’s throw from Harrods. Another high-end hotel and pure luxury if you can afford it.

3. The Dorchester Hotel

Arguably London’s most famous hotel, The Dorchester has become a beacon of comfort in the capital since it opened in 1931.

With a first-class fitness spa, top-of-the-line facilities, and a world-class reputation, the Dorchester is often frequented by the world’s rich and famous.

4. Claridge’s Hotel

Since it opened in the 1930s, Claridge’s has attracted some of the most influential people in the world. Another world-class hotel.

5. Charlotte Street Hotel

Situated in Soho, the Charlotte Street Hotel is famed for its interior design by Kit Kemp.

The rooms also have state-of-the-art entertainment systems while the bathrooms are made of oak and granite.

Getting to London

Gatwick airport.

Gatwick Airport , in West Sussex and with its North and South Terminals, is second only to Heathrow in terms of passenger numbers, as Britain’s number 2 airport.

It is fairly easy to get from Gatwick Airport to the center of London via train or coach.

Heathrow Airport

London’s busiest airport and also one of the busiest in the world, with 5 Terminals and serving many national airlines,  Heathrow Airport  is many people’s main entry point into the UK and tends to be very popular with business travelers.

Heathrow is also very easy to get to and from if you want to get to the center of London.

The London Underground goes to Heathrow. You can also get to the airport quite easily by coach from London Victoria.

Stansted Airport  is not as large as Heathrow and Gatwick but it is nevertheless a major entry and exit point into England.

The airport tends to be favored by the budget airlines such as Ryanair.

You can often get lower-cost flights but the airport is more inconvenient in terms of access from central London.

Luton London Airport

Although not really actually in London, renamed to Luton London Airport for marketing reasons, this is a good airport for budget flights. Easyjet is one of the main airlines serving Luton. Luton is not as close as Gatwick or Heathrow to the center of London.

City Airport

London City Airport  is the closest to the Olympic stadium and area and is a great business flight arrival and departure airport, given its closeness to Canary Wharf and the Docklands.

Getting to the Airports

One of the key questions I know you will have is how to get to and from the various airports in London and if it is possible to get between let’s say Heathrow and Gatwick.

All of the airports have vast car parking areas and each airport tends to have a variety of services such as long stay, short stay, and drop off (where you drop the car and keys off right outside to the terminal).

Another option is to use car rental and to drop the car back with the rental agency. Thus, in effect, you don’t need to park but have your transportation to the airport.

Train and Rail

The services vary according to which airport you are trying to get to. Heathrow is easy to get to from Central London given that the underground (subway trains) network includes a line that takes you to the airport.

For Gatwick Airport, you can use the  Gatwick Express  or you can use the normal rail service and which is roughly half the price but with fewer trains available, i.e. a less frequent service.

National Express offers services to all the main London served airports and from most major cities in the UK. From central London, just head to Victoria train station and you can connect to all the airports via National express and also via a few other smaller providers.

Sports Travel Booking Resources

Traveling around the world to watch & experience sports, I tend to always use the same resources for booking trips. These are the ones I use most frequently and that I find to have great customer support and competitive prices.

  • Sports Event Tickets – Tickets for all sporting events
  • Get Your Guide – is an excellent site as a one-stop shop for booking attractions, local tours, activities, and excursions. Great customer service and an easy-to-use site.
  • Booking.com – The best site I have found for hotel and accommodation bookings.
  • Flights – are also now offered by booking.com and as I love the brand this is my first port of call now for flights.
  • Safety Wing Travel Insurance – I love Saftey Wing as they cover everything I need to be covered and they have a simple-to-use site, and again, I have found their customer service very good, when I needed to ask questions.
  • Hostelworld – Book backpacker hostel rooms around the world with Hostel World.

The TCS London Marathon has become one of the most sought after Abbott World Marathon Majors races. Known for its flat scenic course, world-class competition and excellent organization, this gem of a marathon will have you feeling like royalty when you cross the finish line on the Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.

The first London Marathon was held on March 29, 1981 and more than 20,000 applied to run. From this pool only 6,747 were accepted and 6,255 crossed the finish line on Constitution Hill. Seeing an opportunity to create a unique running experience for our clients, Marathon Tours & Travel immediately established a relationship with the London Marathon team and hosted our first trip in 1982. Entering our 43rd year supporting London we are pleased to continue to be the official North American travel agency, which allows us to offer you a guaranteed entry in conjunction with our four-night package.

Our Deluxe Package provides you with hotel options, a welcome reception, an optional guided tour of Windsor Castle, guided London City Tour with a stop at the TCS London Marathon Expo, pre-race dinner and post -race celebration. The hotels we select are within a short walking distance from the finish, as well as iconic places such as Hyde Park, St. James Park, Buckingham Palace, and the Houses of Parliament.

Entry of overseas runners is strictly limited according to a system devised by the London Marathon Committee. The field is restricted, so unfortunately many are turned away. We are limited in the number of guaranteed entries and do our best to provide a fair reservation process.

The overall experience was wonderful. The staff was amazing; very organized, great communication, and they ensured everyone was well informed. The Hotel was incredible and the location made it easy to access the Underground. Thank you very much for the opportunity to travel with your group

Traveling is hard enough and stressful so having your amazing team do all the hard work makes my life and marathon so much more enjoyable!

Loved the MTT London Marathon experience. Hotels excellent. Shake out run on Saturday was fun. Dinner was very good. Hannah Allyson and Karen were excellent guides.

This is my third trip with Marathon Tours & Travel and am always impressed with the thoroughness of the pre-trip planning and dissemination of information.

Running a marathon in a large city, especially a major, can be isolating and scary given all of the moving pieces. Marathon Tours & Travel takes those fears away and makes the entire experience enjoyable.

You make it easy and take the stress out of doing an international marathon. Thank you for that. Our overall experience was excellent. And MTT does a great job picking really good hotels in outstanding locations.

Being part of this Abbott World Major and making friends with other runners = Priceless! I also appreciate how Marathon Tours makes it so easy to participate by taking care of registration, finding ideal lodging, breakfast, and dinner the evening before, and getting us to the expo and the start of the race.

Great job Marathon Tours! The experience and support received before we actually departed to London is unparalleled. Enjoyed being welcomed upon arrival at the host hotel. Amazing carb load dinner, the evening before race day. Trip addition to Edinburgh, Scotland was amazing. Thank you, Thank you!!

What did I like the most? The people – MTT hosts and runners are instant friends and family. The opening night talk by Jeff and Tom saying more about the mission and purpose of MTT helped me understand why I would want to stay connected to MTT for my destination marathons.

Allyson was amazing!! We felt so very prepared going to London…no question went unanswered. We were so grateful to be going with Marathon tours! Loved the race morning bus, that was so stress free!

Exceptional company, best customer service, above and beyond professionalism during these challenging times, cares so much about their clients we practically feel like family.

We had previously experienced the quality and calibre of a Marathon Tours and Travel trip to the Berlin Marathon and felt the experience that was provided was incredibly well planned and coordinated and was good value for the level of service and experiences that were provided.

I learned a good deal regarding what MTT was all about and the real value you bring to the distance running community over time and finally joined the Berlin tour in 2018. That’s when I knew I would try to trave/race with MTT anytime I could in the future.

Our trip to London and participation in the London Marathon was an exceptional experience resulting from the thorough and detailed planning of Marathon Tours and Travel!

The pre-trip emails, recommendations, covid rules and testing was absolutely invaluable. Feeling comfortable with what we were supposed to do and not worrying about our options made the trip infinitely better. I also liked the transportation to the start from the hotel, talk about making it easy on us! Well done!

The MTT staff and fellow runners. All so friendly and welcoming and helpful to a first-timer on traveling with MTT.

I did not have to ‘think’ much about the days MTT was in control and had planned. We did our own thing before and after the MTT 4 days, which went fine, but was exhausting from a planning and follow-up stand point. It is worth it to have experts do this!

Absolute exceptional organization! Working with Marathon Tours and Travel is the best way to experience any marathon major!

Top notch service! The information of Covid travel special made for our fellow Canadian is very clear and very detailed, for sure it is a great help, I don’t know I could survival without it. Allyson helped us to deal with the very last min change with our travel plan, much appreciated.

Great locations in very nice hotels with great MT staff support. We arrived two days early and left two days later and everything was ready for us. You make it easy for us.

The purpose of this trip was to complete a marathon but I got so much more – this was the trip of a lifetime.

Amazing experience in London and Edinburgh with a nice mix of structure activities and down time.

I felt like finishing my final race in the Abbott WMM was a huge accomplishment thanks to Marathon Tours.

Stephanie was great answering all of my questions and helping us arrange additional nights in both London and Edinburgh. Made it all seamless for us.

Stephanie did a fantastic job lining up the London Marathon! It was great meeting everyone else at the hotel.

Jacqui and Stephanie were amazing hosts and I would love to take another trip that they are hosting in the future. They are both very fun, knowledgeable, and helpful.

Incredible support for a very memorable run… Marathon Tours looked after the details so I could focus on the run!

Awesome unforgettable experience! Marathon Tour made my overseas marathon race event peace of mind!

It was a memorable marathon, and Marathon Tours helped make it so by expertly handling all the logistics.

Fantastic hotel! Conrad St James VERY comfy bed, Awesome breakfast, and perfect location. Thom and Staff were hospitable and friendly as always. Brilliant trip. One of the best City Marathons in the World to run – iconic scenery, wonderful generous crowd, and fast course. Loved it.

I have never been so comfortable and relaxed leading up to my race, knowing that I would be transported to the marathon site. My experience has usually been scouting out the area , and getting there alone. Racing and running is difficult enough without having to be concerned with this problem.

The staff clearly knows the location and the race. I feel comfortable knowing that I am traveling with an organization that knows what they are doing. This trip was as enjoyable as the trips I have taken with Marathon Tours to Tokyo and Berlin.

This was my first international trip let alone running my first international marathon and I am extremely grateful for the overall experience Marathon Tours (Jane and Jacqui) provided. From the hotel & tour in London, to the hotel and tour in Edinburgh, the trip was absolutely incredible. I will definitely book with you again in the future and also recommend you to many of my running friends.

Appreciated the overall organization of Marathon Tours. From Jen assisting me with all my bookings and questions, to the the constant communication from our guides while actually in the UK.

PS – A big shout out to Jen Ryder… Thanks for being my point of contact in the long lead up to race day and answering any questions along the way. Always prompt and friendly, you are amazing!

Welcome reception to meet other runners was great. Having the package with hotel organized together and the hotel was close to finish line. Transport to start was very much appreciated.

Great communication before the trip. Welcome reception was very nice, wish I could stay longer. The location of the hotel Park Plaza was excellent. The continental breakfast was great in the morning.

We loved the hotel choice, a landmark for London. Also it was great to meet Marathons Tours staff in person and all the other runners at the dinner (food was great!). It makes all the difference to have someone else take care for you to get to the start line in time.

The race experience was exceptional. Marathon Tours was organized. The people I met were awesome and made me feel at home.

One of the best marathons I’ve run; the best expo I’ve been to; location of hotel great; hotel itself great — better than expected. Bus trip to start was crucial.

London Marathon was a wonderful experience and it was fun to meet a lot of other runners at the welcome reception and also staying at the hotel. The buses to the start were a big plus.

London Marathon Travel Guide: How To Get To The Race

Start your race day the right way with a well-planned, stress-free trip to the start line

Runners walking to the start areas on Blackheath ahead of the start of the 2022 London Marathon

Greenwich Park is among the nicest places in London. It is not, however, a place that many people would describe as easy to get to early on a Sunday morning, let alone when nearly 50,000 people are also attempting to get there for the start of the London Marathon .

Even with runners’ London Marathon start times spread out it’s always chaotic, and planning ahead is vital. To make the experience as pain-free as possible, give yourself as much time as you can to complete the journey and heed these five bits of advice.

1. Check Your Arrival And Start Times

Your registration email gives you a lot of information to help you plan your journey, including recommended stations for your bib color, an arrival window with suggested trains and your start time. These details are also available in the My Marathon section of the London Marathon app . Sticking to these suggestions will make the whole experience as easy as possible for you and all the other runners, so plan your journey around this advice if possible.

2. Download The Event Guide

Download the London Marathon Event Guide to your phone before you start traveling. This means if you want to check something on the way, you won’t be relying on the same cellular service 48,000 panicked souls are trying to access simultaneously. The instructions contain maps of the start areas and general advice for getting to where you need to be to start on time.

3. Keep Your Race Number Handy

Race-day travel is free for runners who flash their race number on the Underground, Overground, bus network, TfL Rail, DLR and the relevant Southeastern trains that get you to the start line. There will be crowds at many stations on the main routes to the start, so don’t delay everyone by having to dig your number out every time it’s needed.

4. Be Prepared For A Short Walk

You’re about to run 26.2 miles so understandably you’ll want to avoid any extra activity on Sunday morning, but the start areas are all 10 to 15 minutes away from a station. Making sure you arrive at the right station will ensure your walk to the start is no longer than 15 minutes. Consider that walk the last part of your marathon training , and a useful way to warm up for the race.

The Blue start is a 10-minute walk from Blackheath station, as is the Yellow start. The Green start is 10 to 15 minutes from Maze Hill, and the Red start is 10 to 15 minutes from Maze Hill or Greenwich. If you arrive at the station suggested in your registration email, there will also be signs to follow to your start. Just make sure you give yourself plenty of time for this walk because you don’t want to be running to make your start on time.

5. Bring Warm, Old Clothes

Once you drop your bag off you can be waiting for as long as an hour before you start the race—enough time to get pretty cold if you don’t have warm clothes to wear. Wear older clothes you’re happy to donate to charity via the collection points around the start, and if you don’t have any of those then a bin bag is a good alternative.

6. Check TfL Status Updates Before You Leave

There are no significant TfL engineering works planned for Sunday, but it’s worth checking the live status of all the lines before you start traveling to the race in the morning, in case something has gone awry and your planned route is unavailable. You can also use the TfL journey planner to work out your route to the race within London, and any disruptions will then be flagged up.

7. Bear The Football In Mind

The FA Cup semi-finals take place on the same weekend as the London Marathon and Coventry are playing Manchester United at Wembley on Sunday, with kick-off at 3.30pm. This will add tens of thousands of other visitors into the capital on Sunday, and you can expect the Metropolitan line to be busy in the afternoon with people heading to the game.

There shouldn’t be too much overlap with the London Marathon crowds in the morning, but if you’re planning to stick around in town after the race you can expect London stations with trains heading north—Euston in particular—to be busy in the evening after the match finishes at around 5.30pm (or later if the game goes to extra time).

Climb the nicest Mallorcan Mountains and enjoy the weather and nature. Spring in Mallorca is when Mallorca is at its best. There tends to be a cool breeze, the sun is bright but not too hot so an excellent time of year for the Mallorca 312! Mallorca 312 is a cycling festival with a choice for keen amateur cyclists of 3 distances: 312km, 225km and 167km. Your registration allows you to participate in all routes. Depending how you get on with your training, you have time to decide until the day of the race which one you will do.

The registration, start and finish are in Playa de Muro located at just 1 mile from our hotels. Our travel package to the 2024 Mallorca 312 includes a 3, 4 or 5-night stay with breakfasts and evening meals included. Choose between the excellent 3* hotel Ivory Playa or the 4* hotel Grupotel Maritimo. You will also enjoy the support from our local team including our mechanic. Guaranteed entry into the 2024 Mallorca 312 is also available. We also welcome non-cycling partners.

2024 Mallorca 312

Starting next to the Mediterranean coast, you will climb some of the nicest mountains of the island. Pass through traditional and rustic villages and then return back to enjoy your off-the-bike time! Mallorca has become the epi-centre of European cycling tourism in recent years. Its landscapes, its climate and its road network are without any doubt the 3 main reasons for this.

The Mallorca 312 is the longest one day amateur cycling event on the sportive calendar and it’s also one of the toughest. The long course takes in 312 kilometres of riding with over 5,000m of climbing. The other shorter distances still also pack in a lot of ascent. It’s nice to have a focus for your winter training but as the event comes fairly early in the year, it may be tough to put in the necessary training miles. It is great therefore that when you register for the event you don’t have to specify which route you will ride and like the Maratona dles Dolomites and the Sella Ronda, you can decide on the day. The initial part of all 3 distance routes is the same but if you get to half way and you don’t feel up to it, you can always do just the 167km. The event was conceived initially as a lap of the island but but now loops back back north to facilitate road closures. The sportive includes the main climbs of the Tramuntana mountains like the Puig Major, Col de sa Predissa and Col de Feminina.

David Weir gives his thoughts on his performance and his new wheels:

It was a tough race today. I wanted to compete with Daniel [Romanchuk] and Marcel [Hug]. I done well in Boston last week; I got a PB so I had the confidence. I got a new chair, similar to Marcel’s. I just gave it my all today. I got to about 20 miles with Marcel. Last year I only lasted about three miles with him. I am 45 years old in a couple of months so I am really happy with my performance to get third today. The chair is a full carbon chair. And it has made a massive difference. It goes over bumps well. It is aero dynamic. With the wind today, it cuts through it so easily. But you still have to train and master it and get used to it.

David Weir on the podium

I’ve got some emails from runners and spectators who have shared their anecdotes of why and how they are participating today.

Harry says he is a born and raised Londoner who has been running the marathon for the past three years. He chooses a new cause every year and this year, he has chosen Versus Arthritis: “Seeing how arthritis impacts people first-hand inspired me to raise awareness.”

Jake has travelled from New York and says: “I heard London was tougher than the race in NYC. I had to see if that really was the case for myself. I am currently taking a break at Tower Bridge and I never have had to take a break in the Big Apple so there is your answer.”

Mia says she is supporting a team that is running to for the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home to make sure that “no animal in need is turned away”.

Halima just finished the race with a personal best. “I blasted some of my least favourite music in my ears. It made me run faster because I just wanted to get my headphones out of my ears. I tortured myself to success.”

The winners of the elite women’s and men’s wheelchair race, Debrunner and Hug, have spoken together after their victories.

Debrunner on the winning alongside her countrymate and the conditions:

I am really happy about the win and that we could do it together. It’s even better. It was really tough. The wind was [constant]. It was a race against the wind.

Hug on the difficulty of breaking away from his competition:

It was a really amazing race but I also have to say it was a tough race. Maybe one of the toughest [for me] in a long time. The conditions were tough with a lot of wind. I had to try many many times to break away, many attacks, and then finally it happened. I am so happy to win here.

The London Marathon’s Charity of the Year is Samaritans, who support anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope or at risk of suicide. Among those taking part for Team Samaritans is Dave Lock, 62, who is also known as ‘the Running Telephone’.

Lock is currently racing his 25th London Marathon for Samaritans. He contacted the charity himself when experiencing suicidal thoughts and has worked as a listening volunteer.

Running for Samaritans is both a privilege and a pleasure. It is easier to run 26.2 miles than to take a call as a Samaritan volunteer. I am as passionate about Samaritans’ mission today as I was when I crossed the start line for my first London Marathon in 1999. I called Samaritans a few times but eventually I pulled myself out of it. What it did teach me, is that simply talking can help you to find a way out. It doesn’t matter where you are there is someone to listen to you. That’s why I am always on that start line as a telephone.
Dave is just one of our 500 inspirational runners taking on #LondonMarathon today ☎ If you've felt inspired by any of our runners and you'd like continue to help us be here for anyone who needs us, you can donate to the team here: https://t.co/6X8MlRypoP https://t.co/jKXCpYGZJc — Samaritans (@samaritans) April 21, 2024

In the UK and Ireland, Samaritans can be contacted on 116 123 or email [email protected] or [email protected] . In the US, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is 1-800-273-8255 . In Australia, the crisis support service Lifeline is 13 11 14. Other international helplines can be found at www.befrienders.org .

The non-elite runners are continuing the race across London . They may not be professionals but the 50,000 some people are all elite in their dedication and their charities and causes.

And Peres Jepchirchir also speaks after her historic win.

I am feeling grateful and so happy for today’s victory. I was not expecting to beat the world record. I knew we would beat it but I was not expecting it to be me. I am happy to be going to the Olympics. My prayer was to be there and my prayer there is to defend my title. I know it is not going to be easy but I will try my best.

Cairess says he is “really proud” of finishing third in the elite men’s race.

On what the finish means for the Olympics:

It pretty much means I am selected. I am in the team. I think the selection team is tomorrow but I will definitely be there.

On deciding to race this weekend:

It was a risk but it paid off. I don’t think I had the fitness to break [Mo Farah’s] record. In the months of preparation, I had a really stressful couple of months. My cousin was in a car crash. It was a really tough time and he’s come through it. This was for him today. I was emotional this morning. I am so proud to do this for him today. It’s not all about the time and the performance.
On the podium and off to Paris! 🇫🇷 #LondonMarathon pic.twitter.com/9YdtZWzQUc — TCS London Marathon (@LondonMarathon) April 21, 2024

The winners of the day …

Marcel Hug reacts after crossing the finish line to win the elite men’s wheelchair race

Cairess finishes ahead of Mahamed to take the final podium spot in the elite men’s race. The two have now raced the second and third fastest times by Britons.

I don’t think Cairess knew that he was fighting for third until he finished the race so that must have been a nice surprise for him at the end.

Alexander Munyao wins the elite men's race

A massive effort from the Kenyan in the end there to break away from Bekele, who comes in second. The winner finishes with a time of 2:04:01.

Alexander Munyao wins the men’s elite race!

Two Britons are fighting hard for that third spot on the podium in the elite men’s race. Cairess is just ahead of Mahamed and the two will almost certainly be fast enough to qualify for the Olympics.

Mhairi Maclennan finishes with a time of 2:29:13 in her first marathon and becomes the first British women to finish the race.

Mhairi Maclennan competes in the elite women's race during the London Marathon

Munyao now sprints ahead in the elite men’s race. Bekele keeps checking behind him and he seems unfocused on trying to catch up to the 24-year-old.

Lots of talk from the commentators on the colours of the runners fits today. What’s the difference between blue, turquoise, mint and cobalt? What about peach, salmon and apricot? Who knows?

What I do know is that the colour commentary will continue during the 2024 Olympics. We have all the latest on what threads the athletes will be rocking in Paris come this summer.

Assefa and Jepkosgei finished in second and third respectively in the elite women’s race behind Jepchirchir.

We are down to two in the elite men’s race. Bekele, who almost audaciously waves to the crowd, is just ahead with Munyao in second.

It is also a race for third with a crucial Olympics spot up for grabs. It is between Mahamed Mahamed and Cairess.

Peres Jepchirchir wins the elite women's race

What an ending to that race! The Kenyan breaks the women’s-only world record. That is the fastest marathon she has ever run at 2:16:16 and she now heads to Paris as a favourite to defend her title. She is in tears after crossing the finishing line.

Peres Jepchirchir crosses the line to win the women's race in a world record time.

The Olympic champion, who was keen to run well in London to make Paris, Jepchirchir breaks away about 400m away!

Tola is gone in the elite men’s race. Bekele keeps looking back as he leads the now pack of three.

The elite women race still has the four women running as a pack as they pass Big Ben. Are we going to see a sprint race in the last bit of the race at Buckingham Palace?

Bekele is now leading the men’s race. The 41-year-old is a long distance legend but has never won the London Marathon .

About 4.5km to go in the elite women’s race. Still between Assefa, Jepkosgei, Jepchirchir and Alemu. They are at Embankment approaching Blackfriars.

Cairess is away from the pack but he is still under the Olympic qualification time and still has a pacemaker next to him to keep him on track.

It is still unseen as to whether he will break Farah’s record but the main goal in mind was Paris. This is only his second marathon.

Mengesha is leading in the elite men’s race with Tola right behind him. But the pack is still largely together. Who is going to be the first to break away.

Only four remain in the elite women’s race: Assefa, Megertu, Jepkosgei and Jepchirchir. The predicted finish right now is 2:14:56.

Weir, who came third in the elite men’s wheelchair race, has given his assessment on his race:

It was tough, conditions were so tough, it was really windy. I’m happy with my performance. I kept up with Marcel [Hug] to 20 miles, so can’t complain. I promised I’d get back on the podium and I did. Daniel [Romanchuk] is 20 years younger than me, when these guys surge, it’s hell. Can you name another athlete who has done as many marathons as me? Email me if you can.

On if he will be competing at the Paralympics in the summer:

I’m going to take some time off, then I’ll make a decision for Paris. Or British Athletics will make that decision for me.

Catherine Debrunner celebrates after winning the elite women's wheelchair race along with second placed Switzerland's Manuela Schar and third placed Tatyana McFadden

The elite men’s race has almost hit the halfway mark. Tola is up front and no one has yet to drop off.

Cairess has lost one of his pacemakers as he tries to break Mo Farah’s British record of 2:511.

The top three in the elite women wheelchair race is confirmed. Schär makes podium in second ahead of third place Tatyana McFadden.

Kosgei is dropping off a bit in the elite women’s race. She is almost 50m behind the rest of the pack. Assefa is expectedly leading.

Catherine Debrunner wins the elite women's wheelchair race

Debrunner is around five minutes ahead of Manuela Schär as she crosses the finish line. A hugely dominant victory as she finishes with a time of 1:38:52. We’ll get confirmation of who else makes the podium soon.

And that is confirmation of the double victory for the Swiss in the wheelchair races.

Switzerland’s Catherine Debrunner crosses the finish line to win the women’s wheelchair race!

Marcel Hug wins the elite men's wheelchair race

Hug is the champion of London for the fifth time! He’s all alone with Buckingham Palace behind him as he passes the finish line with a time of 1:28:33.

Romanchuk comes in second and Weir comes in third, with huge cheers from the crowd for the Briton.

Marcel Hug crosses the line to win the Men's elite wheelchair race!

The elite women’s race is well on schedule for the women’s-only world record. According to the BBC, they current runners are running at a pace to finish three minutes faster. Assefa and Kosgei are neck-in-neck. Which one of them will take the plunge once the pacemakers drop out?

There is 45 second gap between Hug and Weir now. It is now definitely a race for second place between Weir and Romanchuk.

The wind is certainly having a factor on the elite women’s race as they head towards Tower Bridge now.

The pace that they are going at right now is one that only Assefa is comfortable running in. Let’s see if her competitors can keep up.

In the elite men’s wheelchair race, Hug has opened the gap ahead of Weir and Romanchuk. Hug accelerated away a bit earlier and Weir was unable to keep up the pace.

In the elite women’s race, Debrunner is around four minutes clear and, at the moment, looks on course to win. She has been on her own since the first few miles.

We might be looking at two Swiss winners in both of these races.

Competitors in the men’s wheelchair race cross Tower Bridge.

Lots of world records looking to be broken today, and not just in the elite races. We’ve seen runners looking to break the world record of a marathon completed in traditional Indian dress, the world record of a marathon completed as a live DJ and the world record of someone dressed in an inflatable shark costume.

One of the runners in the elite men’s race is Emile Cairess who eventually wants to break Mo Farah’s British record of 2:05:11, lower his personal best to 2:03 and win an Olympic medal.

I definitely want to break Mo’s British record. I want to run as fast as possible and I feel like I can run a lot quicker than that in the future. An Olympic medal is also my goal – definitely for Los Angeles. Although for this Olympics, if I can qualify, then I would like to be competitive. I wouldn’t be going there just to make up the numbers. I’ve definitely progressed a lot. My workouts, mileage, anything you can quantify, is better than before.

The men’s racers are on the start line. Tamirat Tola is the favourite but the 41-year-old Kenenisa Bekele will be competitive as well. Off they go and huge cheers ring out as the last race gets under way. Behind them: the rest of the 50,000 starters. These are record numbers at the London Marathon .

The tribute for Kiptum, an athlete whose memory will live on, has begun ahead of the elite men’s race. A very poignant moment in London .

Runners including Joyce Chepkirui, Brigid Kosgei, Becky Briggs, Tigst Assefa and Mhairi Maclennan during the London Marathon

The final elite race is set to start in about 15 minutes. There will be a 30-second applause before the race in memory of last year’s winner Kelvin Kiptum.

The 24-year-old marathon world record-holder died in February along with his coach Gervais Hakizimana from severe injuries after a car accident.

As of this year, Kiptum has run three of the seven fastest marathons in history and was ranked first among the world’s men’s marathon runners at the time of his death.

And in the men’s race, Hug and Romanchuk are neck-in-neck at the front of the pack as they approach the 14km mark.

The two are actually chatting with each other as the make a turn. Encouraging one another on? A bit of trash talk? Who knows?

Catherine Debrunner has broken free of Manuela Schär and has now passed some of the backmarkers in the men’s wheelchair race.

This is Debrunner’s first Majors appearance this season. She has set new course records at the 2022 Berlin Marathon, breaking five-time winner Schär’s streak of five Berlin wins, and the 2023 Chicago Marathon.

And the women’s elite racers are lined up on the start line. It seems the temperature has plummeted a bit in London as all of them are attempting to warm up their hands and arms.

A good crowd cheers them on as the announcer introduces what many believe is the greatest field assembled at the London Marathon . And they are off!

We’re just over 11 minutes into the elite wheelchair race and the American Daniel Romanchuk is in the lead. Hug and Weir are right behind him in second and third respectively.

Romanchuk was the first American to win the men’s wheelchair division of the New York City Marathon back in 2018 and won the event in London in 2019.

Daniel Romanchuk (left) and David Weir (centre) early on in the elite men’s wheelchair race at the London Marathon

The wheelchair race marks a significant win in disability sport as the London Marathon has become the first marathon in the world to make its prize money for wheelchair athletes the same as the other elite races.

So, all winners in the elite races today will receive £44,000 with the runner-up getting £24,000 and third-place £18,000.

The wheelchair athletes have made their way to the start line and are off in the first elite race of the day.

Russell ‘Hardest Geezer’ Cook was just interviewed on the BBC’s pre-race coverage. Cook ran 9,941 miles from one tip of Africa to the other in under a year and an average of over 28 miles a day.

He began running on 22 April 2023 in South Africa’s most southerly point. During his 352 days of running, Cook raised more than £650,000 for charities.

“I can really only sum it up by saying it was carnage from start to finish,” said Cook on his milestone in Africa. “I think we’re going to find out how badly damaged the body is today. This is my first long run since I’ve been back in the UK.”

Russ Cook arrives at Cape Angela in Tunisia, thus completing his Project Africa

Cook also shared that he had 93 hours worth of music that he lent on during his incredible journey. When asked what song he never wants to hear again, he said: “Maybe Toto. It is a good tune but when you hear it one to many times it’s just like …” Fair enough.

In the first elite race of the day, the British wheelchair racing legend David Weir will be racing in his 25th consecutive London Marathon this year.

Weir is the most decorated athlete in the event’s history with eight wins. He will be racing with a new chair which he has broken personal bests and may give him the push he needs for a possible ninth victory in London .

“It’s basically a Formula One chair because it’s made by Sauber (which has a Formula One team under the name Stake F1 Team Kick Sauber), it feels amazing to push,” Weir said.

Weir will be facing the undisputed No 1 wheelchair racer, Marcel Hug. The Switzerland native was the first man to win all six Abbott World Marathon Majors (Tokyo, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, New York and London) in a single season last year and will be aiming for a fourth straight win in London.

David Weir and Marcel Hug pose for pictures in front at the Horse Guards Parade, during the men’s elite wheelchair press conference ahead of the London Marathon

Hugh Brasher, the London Marathon race director believes the women’s race may be a tougher race than the Olympics.

No race in the history of our sport has ever had that,” says Brasher. “I have no idea who’s going to win but it’s going to be an incredibly competitive event. This will be a harder marathon to win than the Olympic marathon in Paris, I’m pretty certain of that.

Here is Sean Ingle with more.

So about that record. Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa has set her sights on further lowering her women’s marathon world record to under two hours 10 minutes – but admits her only goal in today is to win.

Assefa ran 2hr 11min 53sec in Berlin last September – a time that obliterated the previous mark of 2:14:04 set by Brigid Kosgei in 2019.

But when asked whether she was chasing a fast time in London , Assefa was more circumspect. “My goal is to win,” she replied. The sense is that Assefa will not go at full throttle today given that she also has the Olympic marathon in Paris in under four months’ time, she is still the overwhelming favourite.

Tigist Assefa wins the race with the new women’s world record of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 53 seconds during the 2023 Berlin Marathon

Assefa will be racing against the former record holder Kosgei, fellow cou Ruth Chepngetich, the Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir and the 2022 London Marathon winner Yalemzerf Yehualaw.

In the men’s race, Tamirat Tola will be keen to match his efforts at the New York City Marathon from November which he won. He came in third in this race last year. His competitors include Mosinet Geremew, who ran the third-fastest time in history at the 2019 London Marathon and Kenenisa Bekele, whose seemingly endless accolades include three Olympic gold medals.

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the 2024 London Marathon . The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and I am ready to take you along with me as I race on 26.2 miles (42.195 km) across the capital.

Just kidding. The most I have ever run in one go was a 5km race when I was about 12 years old. And that is only because I had to for school.

Luckily, you and I can witness a record crowd take on today’s race with an expected turn out of over 50,000 people. You will barely even miss the fact that I won’t be taking part.

And of course there are the elite races. There are is a world record in sight and a few of Britain’s own looking to make their mark.

The 2025 London Marathon ballot closes tonight – here's how to enter

It's your last chance the enter the public ballot for a place in the 2025 London Marathon. The ballot closes tonight (April 26) so get your entry in now to make sure you don't miss out.

Here we've aimed to answer the most common questions about next year's marathon, but if there's anything we've not covered then you'll probably find the answer on the event's official website . The race takes place on Sunday 27 April 2025, so pencil it in your diary now. Best of luck – fingers crossed!

How to enter

How do i enter the london marathon 2025 ballot.

You can enter the 2025 London Marathon ballot through the Let's Do This website . The form only takes a few minutes to complete.

What are my chances of getting a place in the London Marathon ballot?

The organisers don't release official odds, but it's getting tougher every year. Over 578,374 people entered the ballot for the 2024 event, which was a new record. There are only around 17,000 ballot places available, meaning your chances are around 34:1.

How can I get a charity place in the 2025 London Marathon?

You will have to apply through the individual charity, which will decide how to allocate places based on your ability to raise funds and your closeness to the cause (if you can give any examples of past fundraising, that will be a big advantage). Charities have to pay for places, and if you're successful, you will probably have to raise at least £2,000. Check out the full details on the TCS London Marathon website .

How else can I get a place in the London Marathon?

Running clubs that are affiliated with UK Athletics (UKA) can apply for a certain number of places based on their size. It's up to the club to decide which members get those places. You can also apply for a 'good for age' place. These are very competitive, and are awarded based on how fast you are compared to the qualifying time for your age category. Check the good for age qualifying times online . Your time will only qualify if it was set in an event certified by UKA. Good for age applications open at the end of July 2024.

London Marathon entry fees

How much does it cost to enter the london marathon.

The full fee for the 2024 London Marathon is £69.99 for participants in the UK, and £146 for international participants. The international fee includes a £26 carbon offset levy to compensate for travel. Entering the ballot is free, and you only have to pay if you are successful.

Can I get a discount on the London Marathon entry fee?

Yes, if you live in the UK you can pay a discounted price of £49.99 if you donate the fee to the London Marathon Foundation. You'll have to pay whether you're successful in the ballot or not, but you'll be entered in a second draw, increasing your chances of securing a place. You'll also get a training top to wear, even if you don't get a place in the race.

What is the London Marathon carbon offset levy?

Major marathons have a huge carbon footprint due to international travel. The carbon offset levy is donated to certified projects that reduce carbon emissions in other ways.

Ballot results

When are the results of the london marathon ballot announced.

The results of the ballot will be announced in July 2024. You will receive an email telling you whether or not you've been successful.

What if I'm not successful in the London Marathon ballot?

If you don't get a place in the general ballot, you can apply for a charity place instead. Alternatively, you can try a different marathon in the city, The RunThrough Battersea Park Running Festival Marathon , Richmond Park Marathon , Vanguard Way Marathon and Thames Meander Marathon are just a few options.

If you want the experience of running a major race, the Manchester Marathon is taking place on the same day as the London Marathon on 2025. Manchester is the UK's second biggest marathon, and is well known for its friendly atmosphere and flat course, which lends itself well to setting PBs.

Transfers and deferrals

Can i transfer my london marathon place to someone else.

No, transferring your place is against the rules

Can I defer my London Marathon place to next year?

It depends. If you secured a place through the general ballot, or have a guaranteed place from a running club or stakeholder then yes, you can defer your place until next year.

If you have a charity place, you may not be able to defer it, and will have to contact the charity directly for details. You cannot defer a good for age place unless you are pregnant or postpartum. See the official London Marathon website for full details .

If I deferred my London Marathon place last year, can I defer again?

No, you can only defer your place once, so if you've already deferred from the 2024 event, you can't defer again. The only exception is for people who are pregnant or have recently given birth, who can defer for up to three years.

The TCS London Marathon is here as runners take to the streets in one of the world’s most iconic races.

The annual road race in the English capital is again held in a traditional slot in April, with thousands entering the mass participation event and bidding to complete the 26.2-mile course.

  • Follow latest updates from the London Marathon LIVE

Two strong elite fields and the best wheelchair racers in the world will also be competing on a busy day.

For those inspired or keen to experience the magic, you can apply for entry into next year’s race. Here’s all you need to know about the ballot and how to get into next year’s race.

  • London Marathon 2024: Date, times, route and how to watch race
  • London Marathon 2024 travel guide: Start times, route and celebration spots
  • London Marathon 2024 prize money: How much will the winners get?

How can I enter next year’s race?

You can secure a place in the 2025 London Marathon by entering the ballot. The ballot opens on Saturday 20 April, one day before the 2024 edition of the race and closes on Friday 26 April. The ballot results will be announced before the end of July.

The cost of a place in the TCS London Marathon for successful UK participants is £69.99. You do not have to pay your entry fee at the ballot, but UK residents can opt to donate their entry fee to The London Marathon Charitable Trust no matter the outcome of the ballot.

If you are unsuccessful, then those who have donated their fee to the London Marathon Charitable Trust will have their name entered into a second ballot, where 2,000 extra places are up for grabs. If you are successful in either ballot your entry fee is slashed to £49.99. If you are unlucky twice, you’ll get a premium winter running top worth £60.

International entrants will pay £120 for a place in the TCS London Marathon, plus a £26 carbon offset levy – to find out more, click here .

You can return here when the ballot opens to submit your entry into next year’s race.

The ballot is performed at random, while alternative options include applying for a charity place while you wait for the results of the ballot – if you end up gaining a ballot place and a charity place you can return your place to the charity and still raise funds for them as an own-place runner.

When is this year’s race?

The 2024 London Marathon takes place today, Sunday 21 April.

What time does it start?

9.05am – Elite wheelchair men’s and women’s races.

9.25am – Elite women’s race.

10am – Elite men’s race followed by mass start.

How can I watch the race?

Viewers in the United Kingdom will be able to watch the London Marathon live on the BBC, with extensive television coverage and online streaming available via the BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport website.

What is the route?

The course for the event remains largely unchanged since the first running of the race in 1981. Entrants will start in the south of Greenwich, embarking on a largely flat course to the east before folding back towards the centre of London on Woolwich Church Street.

From there, runners weave past the Cutty Sark by the Thames, hugging the river as they travel through Bermondsey and crossing Tower Bridge. A right turn will take competitors into the heart of the old Docklands, winding through Canary Wharf before doubling back to begin the final stretch through central London. A dip through an underpass at Blackfriars will take runners down to the Embankment with the Thames to their left, turning right at Westminster Bridge.

Two more right turns on the edge of St James’s Park will take the field on to the famous finish on The Mall near Buckingham Palace.

What is the prize money on offer at the London Marathon?

This year’s London Marathon will make history as it becomes the first marathon in the world to pay wheelchair racers the same prize money as their able-bodied counterparts.

London Marathon wheelchair races were already the richest in the world, but a further increase of $54,500 (£43,000) to the prize money in 2024 means the total prize pot stands at $308,000 (£243,000), creating parity with the elite men’s and women’s able-bodied fields.

This means that all winners in the elite races of the 2024 London Marathon will receive $55,000 (£44,000), with the runner-up earning $30,000 (£23,700) and third-place $22,500 (£17,800).
