Most people come to Hollywood for its phenomenal beach – an oasis of soft, sugar-white sand, turquoise water, and towering palms that wave quietly in the breeze. Add to that the incessantly bright blue sky, and you'll see why so many visitors don't make it past this remarkable attraction. Not surprisingly, it's been dubbed one of the best beaches in neighboring Fort Lauderdale .

While you won't find the glitz or glam of its more famous Californian counterpart, this Hollywood beach is a definite crowd pleaser, and it boasts a ton of great opportunities for people-watching.

The beach is home to a lengthy paved boardwalk, which attracts visitors of all types (from bikini-clad rollerbladers to well-dressed dog walkers). It's lined by shops, restaurants, and quaint oceanfront cafés.

Set almost directly between the popular Fort Lauderdale (to its north) and Miami beaches (to its south), this lovely spot is a much quieter, more tranquil place to spend a day at the ocean. Its wide, vast expanse makes it easy to find a place to stretch out, throw a frisbee, or practice yoga on the sand.

The famous Hollywood Beach boardwalk

The immaculate Hollywood Beach Boardwalk stretches nearly 2.5 miles along the town's shore of the same name. A bright blip of bricked walkway, this expansive promenade welcomes exercisers of all sorts. Runners, walkers, stroller pushers, rollerbladers, scooters, and bikers all make their way along this popular tourist attraction and thoroughfare.

Remember when we told you about people-watching at Hollywood Beach? The boardwalk's winding stone wall is the perfect place to sit while you partake in this supremely entertaining pastime. If you catch it at the right time of day, you may even be able to rest in the shade of the neighboring palms.

When feeling peckish, you won't have to wander far. A variety of oceanfront restaurants and cafés line this strip, as do stores and bike and water sports rental companies.

Boardwalk at Anne Kolb Nature Center

The Anne Kolb Nature Center boasts 1,501 acres of protected coastal mangrove wetlands. Within these wetlands lie an impressive array of native plants and animals, some of which are either threatened or endangered. If you're extra quiet while wandering along the wooden walkways, you may be able to spot some of them. In all, the center offers four main trails to explore: South Trail (2.3 miles), Mud Flat Trail (0.3 miles), Fishing Pier Trail (783 feet), and Lake Trail (0.2 miles).

If you'd prefer to see the area by boat, you're in luck! There are five vast boat trails to adventure through and fish in during the center's guided boat tours. On land, a large exhibit hall is home to a saltwater aquarium and plays host to a variety of traveling nature-themed exhibits by local artists.

With the brightest of blue skies and shimmering sun, Hollywood didn't need extra brightening. Luckily no one told that to the artists in charge of the Downtown Hollywood Mural Project. A spectacular sight, this unique collection of outdoor murals serves to heighten the city's charm.

From giant whales to robots and the requisite pink flamingos, these incredible curated murals are worthy of every visitor's time. Each one is so fantastic, you'll just have to take photos. So, be sure you have enough storage space on your camera roll.

A fabulous place to visit with kids in Hollywood, this educational haven uses murals, sculptures, interactive exhibits, and interesting stories to help make learning fun. The center is small, so you won't need to carve out too much time for a visit, but its message is large, and important.

It's much larger than it looks from its inconspicuous entrance and expands along the shores of the Intracoastal Waterway. Walking along the winding trails and wooden boardwalk, it's easy to forget you're in a city. Climb up to the observation deck for a spectacular view.

Then, take a load off on one of the park's many benches, perfectly poised to offer you the most beautiful water views. Keep your eyes peeled for an iguana. You won't have to wait long to spot one, as the park is teeming with these adorable creatures.

Insider's tip: There are multiple boat launches on-site – perfect venues for dropping your kayak or canoe in the water. They're primed for larger crafts as well if you're hoping to head out further afield.

24 Best Things to do in Hollywood Florida You Can’t Miss

Looking for the best things to do in Hollywood Florida?

Nestled between the tourist traps of Fort Lauderdale to the North in Miami to the South, Hollywood has many options for entertainment and culture for its residents and tourists alike.

Originally called “Hollywood by the Sea”, it has been frequented as a major metropolitan city in South Florida by those trying to get away from the superficial nature of South Florida. It’s a sleepy, cozy city that many young urban professionals, families, and those from all paths of life call home.

Unless it’s raining, you can find tons of great outdoor activities, trendy restaurants , and a vibrant nightlife. In this space, we’ll list out the 24 fun activities and attractions in and around Hollywood Florida.

24 Best Things to do in Hollywood Florida You Can’t Miss

1. hollywood beach broardwalk.

Compared to Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale Beach, Hollywood Beach is quirky and alternative. With less people and crowds, the beach is more accessible and spacious.

Due to a rise in development, there are better restaurants now than ever before. If you start from the limits of Hallandale Beach to the South, it’s a 4 Mile broardwalk, all the way up to the limits of Dania Beach to the north.

Along this 4-mile stretch, you’ll see plenty of restaurants, hotels, shops, and parks. I don’t know about you but I love to check out new businesses, whether it’s a shop selling arts and crafts or a new restaurant. Rent a bike and cruise through the 4-mile broardwalk.

There’s also great people watching along the beachside broardwalk. If you find a restaurant that you like, pull up a chair and watch all of the different people passing by. You’ll see out-of-towners working on their tan; locals taking a break from their daily lives and enjoying the beach, those trying to find a new adventure, and other curious and friendly beach-goers.

2. Hollywood North Beach Park

Towards the north of Hollywood Beach Boardwalk, on the west side you start seeing less buildings and more trees providing breezy shade.

On the eastern side of the boardwalk, we have a beachfront paradise, a lot less crowded than the more popular part of the beach. In Hollywood North Beach Park, you can bring your family, rent a space in the park near a grill and have an afternoon barbecue. While the food is grilling, take a stroll on the sand, take a dip in the water, or play a beach volleyball game.

The park is really taken care of by the City of Hollywood so it’s really clean. The bathrooms are conveniently located in the middle of the park and they’re always well kept. The park itself reminds me a little bit of the Florida Keys with wooden walkways and plenty of shade, the beachfront just a few steps away.

3. ArtsPark at Young Circle

What used to be a big circle of land, mainly frequented by the homeless, has turned into a vibrant city center that offers tons of activities and events.

Located in the middle of downtown Hollywood, the park is surrounded by Young Circle. Within the arts park you have lots of green space with nicely cut grass. It’s a tranquil location that you can take a nice walk through.

You can sit down on park benches and rest along the many fountains. There are multiple playgrounds for kids. And of course there is lots of art; there are art shops offering things like glass art, modern art, arts and crafts and much more; there are monthly concerts that bring in tons of different crowds to enjoy festivals and other musical art.

The City of Hollywood has been developing this part of Downtown and you can tell it takes care of it very well.

4. Topeekeegee-Yugnee Park (TY Park)

A personal favorite of mine, TY Park is absolutely huge. There are tons of activities to do for children and adults alike. You can have a picnic or rent one of the pavilions to have a barbecue.

The tables within these pavilions are all highly maintained by park services. Amenities such as stores and bathrooms are conveniently located throughout the park. There are trails so that you can enjoy nature and breathe in some fresh air. In the middle of the park, there’s a big lake to sit down and relax next to.

You can even rent some paddle boats and enjoy the view from the lake. Throughout the park there are various playgrounds and even water slides for children to enjoy.

You can bring your dog and dog owners are always asked to pick up after themselves and their furry friends. Overall, it’s a great space for nature lovers and families.

5. Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood Casino

It is one of the biggest casinos and entertainment complexes in Florida, and perhaps the USA. From highly exclusive restaurants and establishments to big ticket concerts, there is something for everyone at Seminole Hard Rock Hollywood Casino. For this reason, it is considered one of the best things to do at night in Hollywood fl.

The casino itself is top of the line, offering blackjack, Mini-Baccarat, slots, and all kinds of poker. There are talks that the Seminole Tribe will start offering sports betting, if that’s your thing. When you get tired of winning big, cash in your chips and have a night out at one of the many high-end clubs.

Check out the Seminole Hard Rock Comedy Club for some laughs as many of the nation’s top comics pass by.

6. Nick’s Bar and Grille

A bit south of north of the Hollywood beach band shell, you’ll find Nick’s Bar and Grille. This restaurant is a staple of Hollywood beach. Offering raw oysters and clams, shrimp baskets, and other American cuisine, this bar and grille is a must-try on Hollywood Beach.

Canadians and locals come from all parts of the world to try “Nick’s famous New England clam chowder.” The mojitos, and other drinks, at the bar are perfect with the bartenders taking their time to make the cocktails.

They have live music on certain nights and their kitchen is open until late night. Grab a seat at the bar and enjoy the breeze as you enjoy an ice cold beer and get to know some locals that pass by on their bikes.

7. West Lake Park

Home of the iconic Hollywood Water Tower, which can be seen for miles around Hollywood, this park is an outdoor urban mangrove jungle offering a plethora of activities to do alone or with the family.

With 47,800 feet of beachfront space and 20,600 feet of mangrove shoreline along waterways, there is plenty of space to kayak, bike, hike, or paddle through. Boasting basketball courts, hiking paths, a marina, a picnic area, playgrounds and various volleyball courts, there are tons of activities to do in this enormous park.

The entrance costs $1.50 except on Sunday when there is a $3 charge. The park is open from 8am to 6pm. Pets are welcome, an added plus but of course patrons are asked to clean after themselves and their furry friends.

8. Upper deck Hallandale

A couple of blocks south of Hollywood, in Hallandale Beach, you can find Upper Deck near the northeast corner of Gulfstream on Hallandale Beach Boulevard. It has a breezy patio with plenty of fans to keep cool and a spacious interior. The food is great and the sports are always on.

The baked oysters are to die for and the menu is fresh and savory.  Sit at one of its two huge bars and you can start up a friendly conversation with many sports fans. The outside patio was recently renovated and now boasts over 20 TVs with prime furniture to enjoy the latest sporting events.

There isn’t a seat outside that doesn’t have a view of one of the many huge TVs. The inside is really comfortable too with a huge projector on major sporting event nights.

Even before Oprah’s review stating this place has her favorite burger, Le Tub has been a Hollywood staple for a long time. Yes, the burgers are great.

The view is absolutely spectacular, especially at sunset due to it being on the intercostal side, or west of the Atlantic shore. Come early because this place is usually packed. The olde’ Florida vibe and the burgers are part of the experience. In this place, even before the recent fame, the client isn’t always right. The burgers can take a bit to be served.

The waiters and waitresses, and I used to talk to some of them personally, are told to mind the restaurant’s business over the customers’ whims. That’s the way it should be. There are tons of establishments to choose from. If you choose Le Tub, but the quality of the food, and the fantastic view, over the, perhaps, the off-putting attitude of the workers.

10. Hard Rock Stadium

Let’s go Dolphins! There are simply so many things to do in South Florida that going to an NFL game might be an afterthought. Hard Rock Stadium doesn’t only host NFL games, though.

In 2022, it will be hosting a Formula 1 race and the Miami Open among an A-list of concerts. The stadium itself is state of the art and has hosted 5 super bowls. Miami Dolphin games are lots of fun.

Get there early and enjoy some of the tailgate BBQs. Throw the ball around with your friends while the game starts. Once the game time comes around, get ready for an amazing NFL experience.

11. Gulfstream Casino

One of the best free things to do in Hollywood Florida for adults – a must see for anyone interested in horse racing. It’s a huge complex with live shows and of course, all sorts of gaming available in Florida, open all year.

It’s been a premier gaming complex since its inception in 1939. Races run from December through October. It was dubbed “the track by the sea” due to its spacious and scenic views attracting horse players from all over the world.

The casino also offers poker, craps, blackjack, sports betting, and of course horse wagering.  Admission is free but they offer VIP suites to enjoy the races. It’s conveniently located on US1 and Hallandale Beach Blvd.

Gulfstream Casino

Understand [ edit ]

Hollywood can be divided into four different areas. The first would be Hollywood Beach along the Atlantic Ocean, where you will find most of the action. A short ways inland is Art Deco downtown Hollywood , filled with restaurants, shops, a park, and California essence housing. From here on out there is not much to see as residual housing and small business occupies the area. When you finally get to the edge of town by the Florida Turnpike, you will find a few hotels, casinos and other attractions here along an Indian reservation owned by the Seminole Tribe of Florida who have lived in the area since the 18th century.

History [ edit ]

Hollywood was founded in 1925.

Climate [ edit ]

Hollwood has a tropical climate, with very hot and humid summers and temperatures in the 80s and 90s (26-38 C). The city has warm winters, with temperatures in the mid-70s (about 23C). The summer is a rainy season with occasional tropical storms and hurricanes. The winter is drier and mostly sunny by comparison. Hollywood gets about 60 inches of rain annually.

Hollywood offers a clean, excellent beach complete with its "Broadwalk" pedestrian path, which offers oceanfront shopping, dining, entertainment, strolling, a running path and a biking path. Bike rentals are available. There is also a Beach Theater on the Broadwalk at Johnson Street, with cultural arts performances normally 5 nights per week (weather permitting).

Although it might be hard to get hold of the proper equipment, kitesurfing is great in the area.

All along the Boardwalk you can find restaurants where you can get a very big, very tasty, and usually inexpensive pizza with a large beer to go with it. There are many restaurants and bars along the intracoastal waterway that are very good.

Downtown Hollywood in particular can offer a good and reasonably priced meal. Hollywood has particularly large populations of Italians, Peruvians, Romanians, Greeks, and Turks compared to the rest of South Florida...all of whom bring their great cuisine with them. There are a lot of live performances from traditional bands, singers, and exotic dancers either inside restaurants or on the street. The coffee, ice cream, and middle eastern cuisine tends to be of insurpassable quality.

Stay safe [ edit ].

Hollywood is a relatively safe city, especially near tourist areas along the ocean. Still use common sense. Don't walk at night alone, be wary of strangers, and do not draw too much attention to yourself. Also the beach in the area is prone to rip currents and man-o-war (jellyfish). Usually you will see a flag hanging at a nearby lifeguard stand telling how safe the water is. If the flag is colored green or yellow it should be safe to go in. if the flag is purple, red, or any other color you should stay out of the water. Only swim in sight of a lifeguard stand.

Remember if you are caught in a rip current don't try to fight it. Instead swim out diagonally with the current until you are safely out of the current's grasp.

As with the rest of the USA the emergency telephone number for fire, police and rescue emergencies is 911.

Travel Guides

'round the clock in hollywood, historic hollywood brims over with culture and entertainment, day and night..

There are two sides to the city of Hollywood , founded by visionary planner Joseph Young in 1921: the 35-acre beachside Broadwalk Historic District with its Mediterranean Revival and Art Moderne-style architecture mixed with quaint cafes, restaurants, small lodgings and resorts; and the sophisticated Historic Downtown Hollywood , an urban village setting packed with an eclectic array of cafes, galleries, boutiques and other businesses.

This fusion of Old Florida style and modern charm creates a scenic backdrop for around-the-clock adventures, only 10 minutes south of Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport .

The city's trolley service links the area's historic beachfront and promenade and the historic downtown with a guided tour for only $1. Tour guides on board point out significant sights along the route, day or night, including the home of Joseph Young and the Historic Hammerstein House, located in the historic Hollywood Lakes residential area between the beach and downtown.

Hollywood By Day

1. Take a bicycle tour. HT4 Kewl Tours offers The Hollywood Trails: Historic and Eco-Adventure Kewl Bicycle Tours , featuring four routes that depart from the Broadwalk district (at Sun & Fun Cycles ) and range from five to 27 miles. The Historic Architecture trip includes the 1925 Mediterranean Revival home of the city's founder; the City of the Arts tour visits the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood and several local galleries; two eco-tours cruise to the mangrove-filled wetlands of Anne Kolb Nature Center .

2. Discover ArtsPark. Located at Young Circle in downtown Hollywood, this 10-acre arts and entertainment park contains a children's play area, a plaza that hosts special events, tables with game boards embedded in their tops; a lush, shady lawn; the Visual Arts Pavilion where resident artisans hone their crafts; and "Millennium Springs," a water sculpture created by artist Ritsuko Taho with movements dictated from the energy patterns of a nearby baobab tree. 3. Satisfy your taste for excitement in Historic Downtown. Characterized by quaint sidewalk cafes, brick-lined walks and six blocks of unique boutiques, shops, art galleries and dozens of excellent restaurants along Hollywood Boulevard and Harrison Street, the pedestrian-friendly environment is the perfect place to enjoy South Florida. Just minutes from the beach, the downtown district is on the National Register of Historic Places and is the backdrop for year-round festivals, street markets and entertainment. 4. Think healthy. Hollywood Beach's brick-lined pedestrian promenade bustles with joggers and skaters, and its six miles of sands create a soothing natural spot for yoga or Tai Chi. Post workout, head to Josh's Organic Garden on the Broadwalk, which sells fresh-from-the-tree fruit smoothies. 5. Experience cultural immersion. The city hosts special events throughout the year that celebrate Hollywood's culture, heritage and architecture. The annual Vintage South Florida festival at ArtsPark (just a $1 trolley ride from the Broadwalk district) features an antiques and collectibles market, dancing, art, live music and historic tours in March. The annual Hollywood Historical Society home tour , also in March, gives visitors a chance to take a walking tour of the historic Lakes district. Every first Sunday from September to May, Historic Hammerstein House tours showcase what prominent Hollywood architect Bayard Lukens called "Tropical Modern" architecture (also located in the Hollywood Lakes area). If art is what you're looking for, find one-of-a-kind crafts at the Seaside Craft Fair on the Broadwalk in January and enjoy the Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk , every third Saturday.

Hollywood by Night

1. Enjoy open-air dining. With the Atlantic Ocean to the east and the Intracoastal Waterway to the west, Hollywood Beach is an oasis for outdoor, waterfront dining. Downtown, sidewalk cafes are nestled among trendy shops and galleries, perfect for people watching.

2. Listen to live music. The Broadwalk Friday Fest brings free cultural arts performances, ranging from Afro-Cuban concerts to blues bands, to the 500-seat, open-air Hollywood Beach Theatre every second and fourth Friday of the month. Downtown's ArtsPark at Young Circle presents free blues concerts on Thursdays and jazz on Sundays each week. 3. Stroll into the sunset. USA Today named Hollywood Beach's 2.5-mile seaside walkway one of the top 10 nostalgic promenades in the country, making it the postcard-perfect spot to catch the final light of day. 4. Dance in the moonlight. The stage is set for romance every Monday through Wednesday evening with the Dancing Under the Stars series at the Hollywood Beach Theatre, located on the Broadwalk just steps from the sand. Music ranges from R&B to rock and easy listening. 5. Get a good night's sleep. The visithollywoodfl.org web site features a "Hot Deals" section for area hotels that not only offers reduced winter rates but also special discounts for Florida residents – options include everything from large beach resorts to small lodgings with less than 50 rooms. To plan your own beach getaway to Hollywood, call 877-672-2468 or visit www.visithollywoodfl.org . Check out www.visithollywoodfl.org/accommodations.aspx for more information on accommodations.

Health | Doctors race against Florida’s six-week abortion ban

Abortion rights advocates march and rally in support of the Yes On 4 campaign in downtown Orlando against the six-week ban on Nov. 5, when Florida voters will vote on whether to allow the right to an abortion in Florida on Saturday, April 13, 2024. (Willie J. Allen Jr./Orlando Sentinel)

With just days until Florida’s six-week abortion ban takes effect on Wednesday, providers are rushing to perform as many abortions as possible while planning contingencies for a future where they will need to turn thousands of women away.

Clinics have expanded hours, prioritized ultrasounds and added appointments in these final weeks. They’ve fortified their patient navigation efforts and strengthened relationships with abortion fund groups like the Florida Access Network that provide financial and logistical support to people seeking to terminate pregnancies.

The ban has limited exceptions for rape, incest, human trafficking, the mother’s health and for fatal fetal abnormalities.

“Planned Parenthood’s motto has always been ‘care no matter what.’ And we don’t turn patients away. So this is a very devastating and tragic situation for our staff, who have to say, ‘we can’t take care of you, we have to send you someplace else,’” said Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida’s interim CEO Barbara Zdravecky.

Patient panic

As medical providers race against the clock, many patients are unaware their time is running out, said Dr. Chelsea Daniels, a fellow with Physicians for Reproductive Health and an abortion provider in South Florida. When she tells patients about the imminent ban, she’s mostly met with shock.

“We have signs up all over the clinic, we’re having conversations with patients … But I imagine that when May 1 comes we’re going to have patients coming in farther along than six weeks and having no clue that they’re not able to get an abortion. And I think that it’s really hard to overstate the panic that people are going to feel,” said Daniels.

Florida performed over 84,000 abortions last year, including over 7,000 for women who came from elsewhere, according to state data.

The six-week ban, one of the strictest in the nation, was passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2023 but was only recently ruled constitutional by the state Supreme Court. Six weeks of gestation is about two weeks after a pregnant woman misses her first period.

Florida also requires two in-person visits at least 24 hours apart before someone can get an abortion. Some providers say these requirements will effectively prevent some people from getting the procedure at all.

Q&A: Florida passed a 6-week abortion ban. What happens now?

Pursuing alternatives

Zdravecky and other Planned Parenthood leaders are preparing now for a future where the number of abortions performed in Florida dramatically decreases.

To compensate, the clinics will continue to offer and expand their other services.

Clinics in Southwest and Central Florida will start offering vasectomies again, and focus on expanding access to birth control and the Plan B pill, which can be taken within 5 days after unprotected sex to prevent sperm from fertilizing an egg, Zdravecky said.

After the ban takes effect, those who can find the funds will travel to other states. For most Floridians, and most of the southeast U.S., the closest state to get an abortion past 6 weeks will be North Carolina. The closest place to terminate a pregnancy past 12 weeks will be Virginia or Illinois.

Many others will turn to the internet to order abortion pills, either illegally or through telemedicine appointments with out-of-state doctors, who can prescribe them due to “shield laws” that protect them from out-of-state prosecution, even in states like Florida where doctors are not allowed to prescribe the pills via telemedicine.

The pills are widely considered safe to use up to about 10 weeks. Florida clinics can still offer follow-up exams to those who obtained the abortion pills online.

“We want to be able to assist anyone with any type of care that we legally can do in order to make sure they have the care that they need to stay healthy,” Zdravecky said.

Florida law also bans people from obtaining the pills via mail, but the U.S. Justice Department ruled in January 2023 that the postal service can continue to deliver abortion pills to states where the pills are banned. This ruling supersedes state law.

Legal quagmire

The law offers exceptions for rape, human trafficking and incest up to 15 weeks of pregnancy but requires documentation like a police report or a restraining order.

It also has exceptions for the mother’s health and for fetuses with a “fatal fetal abnormality,” a nonclinical term defined as a condition where the baby will die at birth or immediately after.

“I’ve asked three attorneys: What does immediately mean? And one told me one day, one told me one week, and one told me a month. How am I supposed to interpret this?” said a Central Florida abortion provider who asked to remain anonymous because she was not authorized to speak to the press.

Anyone who helps someone terminate their pregnancy in violation of the law could lose their medical license and be charged with a third degree felony, punishable by a maximum of five years in prison.

“These exceptions are incredibly difficult to decipher and define and to follow,” Daniels said. “Physicians and the lawyers advising us, we are afraid to make medical decisions that could put us in legal jeopardy, even if we understand that our medical decisions are based in the science.”

But providers and hospitals that are overly conservative in granting exemptions can face consequences too.

In 2023, Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood refused to provide an abortion for a woman whose water broke because she was past Florida’s 15-week limit, even though she was at risk of infection. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services concluded the hospital violated a federal law that required it to provide emergency care, threatening in a letter obtained by The Washington Post to take away hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funding if the system didn’t take corrective action.

AdventHealth Central Florida and Orlando Health, Central Florida’s two main hospital systems, did not immediately respond when asked how they will determine what conditions qualify for exceptions under the six-week ban.

The fallout

Zdravecky is optimistic that, in November, Floridians will vote to reverse the six-week ban and protect abortion up to the age a baby can survive outside the womb.

Even then, she said clinics anticipate months of legal challenges before the ban is undone, and many women who want abortions will not be able to get them during that time.

“It’s going to be a very dramatic situation in the lives of Floridians. It’s truly a healthcare crisis,” she said.

Abortion rally draws over 1,000 to Orlando for Yes On 4 kickoff

Planned Parenthood does not plan on closing any clinics in the meantime, Zdravecky added, though smaller independent clinics may not be able to generate enough funds to stay open.

“Abortion service is the majority of their business and it will put an economic hardship on them if they don’t have patients and revenue while we wait this out, trying to get the ballot initiative passed,” Zdravecky said.

Overall, abortions have increased in the U.S. since the fall of Roe v. Wade, which The Guttmacher Institute attributes to increased efforts by clinics, abortion funds, support organizations and the rise of networks to order pills online.

But pregnancy terminations fall in states where they are restricted. The Guttmacher Institute found that in South Carolina, the number of abortions provided in the formal health care system decreased by 71% the month after the state started enforcing a six-week ban on abortions in 2023.

President Joe Biden’s administration is again delaying a sweeping plan to ban menthol cigarettes. Anti-smoking advocates are upset about the delay, but the decision could avoid angering Black voters ahead of November elections. Biden’s top health official said Friday the administration would take more time to consider feedback on the ban, including from civil rights leaders. The announcement is another setback for the health officials at the Food and Drug Administration. They drafted the ban and predicted it would prevent hundreds of thousands of smoking-related deaths. But White House officials have delayed finalizing the ban several times.
