Beach Getaways – Texas Spring Break Ideas

Spring break is the perfect time to take a trip to the beach in Texas! Expect the water to still be cool and it might be windy, but pack your layers, and plan on a good time in the sand and the sun. Here are some of the top beach getaways in Texas:

South Padre Island

South Padre Island is hands down the most popular spring break destination in Texas . The island is known for its white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, making it a prime spot for sunbathing and swimming. You’ll also find plenty of shopping and dining options.

If you are feeling active, you can also enjoy outdoor activities like jet skiing, parasailing, and fishing. For some time away from the sand, Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark is a hot spot with water slides, a lazy river, and a wave pool.

Along with its white sand and gorgeous water is lively nightlife for those looking for late night fun. College students flock to South Padre Island for a party during the month of March, so families should just be aware of this as things could be a little wild.

A condo rental is recommended for families as many hotels offer spring break food and drink packages that cater to college students. Some condos market themselves directly to families looking for a quieter spot to play in the surf with young ones on a family spring break in Texas.

Corpus Christi + North Padre Island

Corpus Christi is a coastal city that offers a great mix of beach and city activities. The city in located on the main land and has several museums and attractions, including the Texas State Aquarium , USS Lexington Museum on the Bay , and the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History .

Cross over the causeway onto North Padre Island for some of the best beaches in Texas. We love this area and it is always our top beach recommendation over some of the more crowded beaches! Our most recent visit was last spring and the weather was perfect and the water was so clear! Our children spent hours in the water and loved every minute.

Head to Whitecap Beach for some boogie boarding fun and to Padre Island National Seashore for a quiet walk along Malaquite Beach . Mustang Island State Park is also a gorgeous beach with sand dunes, lovely water, and plenty of space to fly a kite and build a sand castle.

Galveston is one of the best beach towns in Texas with a charming historic area and plenty of activities for visitors.

The city’s Pleasure Pier is a popular spot for thrill-seekers along the boardwalk, with rides like the Iron Shark roller coaster and the Texas Star Flyer. Families can also enjoy a day at the beach , with options like Stewart Beach and East Beach. The water in Galveston is not as clear as other Texas beach towns mentioned here, but the area is so charming that it always makes up for it and we have tons of fun anyway!

Head to the historic Strand District for several shopping and tasty dining spots. Families will love Moody Gardens with its aquarium and interactive rainforest pyramid!

Port Aransas – one of the best places to go for spring break!

Port Aransas is a popular beach destination located on Mustang Island just north of Corpus Christi. This Texas spring break spot is a popular choice among locals and is accessed via a ferry which starts off the fun right away!

You can enjoy fishing, kayaking, and bird watching is another popular activity here. The beach is perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and building sandcastles . There are also several restaurants and shops in the area.

Plenty of hotels and vacation condos are located right on the beach making this a very walkable vacation. Most people choose to rent a golf cart in Port Aransas to zip around town in and to make for easier parking at the beach.

Hill Country Spring Break Destinations in Texas

For those looking for a relaxing and scenic spring break destination, the Texas Hill Country is a must-visit. This region is known for its rugged landscape, natural beauty, and charming small towns that offer a ton of things to do in Hill Country outdoors. Here are some of the top Hill Country towns to consider for your spring break getaway.

The Texas Hill Country is a region of rolling hills and valleys that is home to numerous Texas state parks, nature trails, and scenic drives. We recommend choosing a town or two to book lodging and then making day trips to check out the area on a mini road trip. You can enjoy hiking, picnicking, wildlife watching, and of course seeking out the Texas bluebonnets that bloom each spring!

Concan is home to the gorgeous Frio River which is crystal clear and GORGEOUS. Tubing the Frio River is a popular activity in Hill Country, but Spring Break could be a bit early for that activity. Many outfitters are open year round but you’ll want to double check the water levels for safety and expect the water to be quite chilly.

Nevertheless, this area is a beautiful place to go for spring break in Texas even if you don’t swim! Garner State Park is one of the best Texas Hill Country State Parks and is nearby with plenty of hiking trails, wildflower covered hills, and picnic areas, as well as camping. There are adorable Frio River cabins that are perfect for a family getaway in nature.

New Braunfels

New Braunfels is a charming town located in the heart of the Hill Country that offers a mix of cultural attractions and outdoor activities. Explore the town’s historic district, which is home to numerous buildings and landmarks dating back to the 1800s.

The town is also known for its water activities, including tubing and kayaking on the Guadalupe River and Comal River. Families with children may especially enjoy a visit to Schlitterbahn Waterpark , one of the largest waterparks in the country! My kids love it there specifically because there are fun options for my thrill seeking kids as well as those who prefer the calmer rides.

Head to nearby Natural Bridge Caverns , Landa Park Miniature Golf Course , and the historic Gruene district for a fun meal out and some exploring.

Johnson City + Fredericksburg

Johnson City is most well known for its insanely amazing Christmas lights , but it is also gorgeous in the spring too! Those looking for a mix of nature and history will love choosing Johnson City as a base for their spring break in Texas.

Johnson City is home to Lyndon B. Johnson’s childhood home and historic ranch. The Sauer-Beckman Farm serves as a living history museum for fun and interactive look at life in the “old days.” Pedernales Falls is a great spot for hiking and picnicking with your toes in the waterfalls.

We highly recommend the Science Mill for an excellent interactive museum for kids of all ages, but especially big kids. My 10 year-olds loved it when we went this summer – especially when they got to fly like insects wearing a VR set!

Take a scenic drive to Fredericksburg for strawberry picking , the most beautiful Texas bluebonnet fields, wine tasting, Wildseed Farms (the largest working wildflower farm in the country!), and historic museums and buildings teaching about the German heritage of the town.

Not too far from Fredericksburg is Enchanted Rock State Park which is arguably one of the most beautiful state parks in Texas Hill Country . Spring is the perfect time of year to explore the trails winding through the park and to climb the unique pink rocks.

Marble Falls + Burnet

If you are looking for a family-friendly spring break in Texas with plenty to do, one of our favorite spring break ideas is Marble Falls . head to Sweet Berry Farm for strawberry picking, inflatable pillow bouncing, and the cutest goats.

Go hiking in Balcones Nature Preserve and don’t miss the most beautiful bluebonnet field that you can walk through (taking photos in them is a Texas tradition!) and the wildlife observation station. The nature trail at the Visitor’s Center is great for even the smallest children.

Grab a slice of pie from Blue Bonnet Cafe   and gumbo from The Real New Orleans Style Restaurant . We won’t tell anyone if you eat dessert first, but the Cajun food is amazing, so leave room!

Head to nearby Burnet for a tour of Longhorn Cavern State Park underground caves and historic ruins and hiking trails.

Inks Lake State Park is great for kayaking, fishing, and camping with a tent or in their Texas lake cabins that have heat and air conditioning. We camped here during Spring Break two years ago and it was wonderfully beautiful and green! Our kids loved the pedal boats and lakeside swings. It is truly one of our favorite things to do in Texas for Spring Break.

Burnet is also the Bluebonnet Capital of Texas and hosts the Bluebonnet Festival each spring. If your dates match up, you won’ t want to miss this Texas spring break vacation idea!

Some may claim that Georgetown is just north of the Hill Country boundary lines, but we aren’t too strict around here – its too beautiful! This charming town is home to the “Most Beautiful Town Square in Texas.” The historic downtown square in Georgetown is surrounded by tasty eats (Sweet Lemon Kitchen and 600 Degrees Pizzeria are two of our faves!) and cute local shops.

I’m sure you will love Sweet Eats Fruit Farm as much as we do for Spring Break in Texas! It is one of our very favorite things to do in Georgetown . Visit the petting zoo, shoot apple cannons, conquer the ropes course, dig in the treasure mountain, watch he pig races, and get your face painted. Their flower farm is one of the best in Texas and they have strawberry picking too!

Walk the trails at San Gabriel Park and Garey Park and climb the playground at Berry Springs Nature Preserve (tell the donkeys that we say hello!). Inner Space Cavern is a great spot to explore the caves local to the area.

Explore the iconic Alamo and learn about the city’s role in Texas history, or take a stroll along the scenic River Walk and enjoy the many shops, restaurants, and bars that line the river.

For thrill-seekers, one of the best thing to do for spring break is heading to Six Flags Fiesta Texas for a variety of rides and attractions. The nearby aquarium is a great place to get up close and personal with marine life.

San Antonio is a great destination for families and college students alike. Families can visit the Alamo , the River Walk , and the San Antonio Zoo , while college students and adults can enjoy the nightlife afterward too. San Antonio also offers plenty of outdoor activities, including hiking and biking.

Natural Bridge Caverns is a must-visit attraction for those who love exploring caves. The caverns are located near San Antonio and offer guided tours for visitors. If you are lucky, you might find a concert going on while you are there! You can also enjoy ziplining and gemstone mining which is always a hit with our crew!

San Antonio knows how to have a good time so the odds are good that there will be some kind of festival going on while you there. Be sure to check your dates if you are interested in the Green Dyed River Walk on St. Patrick’s Day or the 11 day Fiesta in mid to late April.

Dallas is another great destination for those looking for an urban escape. Visitors can explore the city’s many museums and cultural attractions, such as the JFK Museum and the Dallas Museum of Art . One of the biggest events in Austin is the South by Southwest ( SXSW ) festival, which takes place every March during spring break. The festival is a combination of music, film, and interactive conferences, with hundreds of artists and performers from around the world.

During SXSW, the entire city of Austin transforms into a music venue, with free and ticketed events taking place at various locations throughout the city. Listen to live music, film screenings, and panel discussions.

Houston is a great destination for those looking for a mix of urban and outdoor activities and spring is the perfect weather in Houston. This small city in north Central Texas is a hot spot for amazing things to do with kids . Head over to the Waco Mammoth National Monument for some amazing discoveries and then head to the Dr. Pepper Museum for some sweet treats.

The Magnolia Silos are the perfect place to go for a charming wiffleball game, delicious bakery cupcakes, and to pick up some local wildflower seeds for souvenirs (and shh…some super cute backdrops for photos of you or your kids!). No judgement if you bribe them with the cupcakes! 🙂

FAMILY SPRING BREAK IN SOUTH PADRE ISLAND TEXAS

Fair warning on this one: South Padre Island is a popular option for spring break in Texas for everyone – especially college students.  Meaning not everything there will be 100% kid friendly.  That being said, it is still a great family Texas spring break idea.  The main attraction to this beautiful city is of course its expansive beach.   Nature loving families will also love their sea turtle sanctuary , their birding center , and numerous fishing piers.

Water park mega-giant Schlitterbahn has a location in South Padre too – which actually includes an indoor water park.  The cool news is that you can stay on property at the Schlitterbahn Resort South Padre Island !

FAMILY SPRING BREAK AT BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK IN TEXAS

Located in far west Texas on the very edge of the state, Big Bend National Park is as authentic Texas as you can get.  Explore the expansive Boquillas Canyon, trek the many nature trails in the park, camp under the stars [while singing “The stars at night are big and bright” — don’t leave out the claps!], kayak the Rio Grande, or horseback ride through Study Butte.  Either way, it is a fabulous way to spend your family spring break becoming one with the nature of Texas

Lodging within Big Bend National Park goes fast!  Due to the brutal temperatures of the summer, spring break is one of their busiest times of the year and places to stay are in high demand.    If you can swing it, the Chisos Mountains Lodge  is highly recommended.  The Big Bend National Park has a handy lodging chart available too.

FAMILY SPRING BREAK AT DIXIE DUDE RANCH IN TEXAS

There are very little experiences in Texas as Texan as staying at a dude ranch.  So why not spend your family spring break in Texas at the Dixie Dude Ranch ?   Horseback riding, home cooked meals, and horseback riding [did I say that twice?] await you in this Western wonderland.   Guests can partake in swimming, fishing, campfire sing-a-longs, hayrides, and more.   Massage therapists are also available for those in need of relaxation.  The Dixie Dude Ranch is autism friendly as well.

Beach Spring Break Destinations in Texas

Many families from the Northern USA travel to Texas every spring to escape the snow and catch some sunshine.

From a fun-filled South Padre Island Spring Break to family friendly Galveston TX Spring Break, the Lone Star State has plenty of beachy places to travel for spring break.

South Padre Island

South Padre Island , often referred to as the Texas Spring Break Island, provides a vibrant and lively atmosphere that is ideal for college students seeking an active holiday.

No surprises – South Padre Island attracts a large influx of college-aged visitors, especially during the Spring Break season.

South Padre Island beach looks stunning while skydiving

Known as the ‘Spring Break Capital of Texas’, the island is a hotspot for those seeking a lively atmosphere and a place to let loose. The island’s reputation for high-energy parties, vibrant nightlife , and thrilling water sports draws legions of fun-loving college students from across the country.

From dolphin watching to horseback riding on the beach, the exhilaration never ends.

During SPI spring break season, the island teems with crowds, creating an electrifying and contagious energy that is hard to resist.

Gorgeous views of the Gulf Coast on South Padre Island

It’s important to note that while this makes for a lively spring break, it also means a higher density of visitors, which can lead to crowded beaches and longer waits at restaurants and attractions.

Also, I have felt the island is not a good fit for families with younger kids at this time.

Despite the crowds, many college students find the lively atmosphere and camaraderie worth the wait, returning year after year to take part in the South Padre Spring Break tradition.

Our favorites include East Beach and the Galveston Island State Park beach. The beaches make Galveston an excellent spring break getaway.

When you think “adventure travel” you probably think of far-flung places like Belize and Alaska—not Wisconsin. But if you’re an outdoor adventurer, you’ll find plenty of places to explore in Wisconsin. A vacation in Wisconsin can put you close to the Kettle Moraine State Forest, which has excellent biking trails. Or choose Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands—kayakers will love exploring Lake Superior’s many caves and shipwrecks.

Packers fans don’t wear those cheese-wedge hats for nothing! Foodies will love tasting as many of Wisconsin’s artisanal cheeses as possible. Either drive from cheesemaker to cheesemaker, or choose a Wisconsin vacation in a town with a good farmers’ market—then the cheesemakers bring their wares to you. And what goes better with artisanal cheese than craft beer? In Milwaukee, visit the Lakefront and Sprecher Breweries for tours and tastings.

Wisconsin Dells is a classic family vacation destination. A vacation in Wisconsin Dells will put you close to all the excitement—you’ll have to tear the kids away from the theme parks, wave pools and water parks in Wisconsin Dells!

Lake Geneva boasts clean beaches, golf, and a small-town feel that definitely appeals to city dwellers—it’s a popular getaway for residents of Chicago.

#1: Hike to the State High Point in Guadalupe Mountains National Park

What better way to kick off spring break, than to hike to the highest point in Texas , Guadalupe Peak! There’s something indescribable in knowing that at that exact moment, there is nothing taller than you in your whole state!  Plus, spring is the BEST time to hike this high altitude trail!

From this towering vantage point at the peak of the Guadalupe Mountains range, you can see all the wondrous beauty and adventure of this grand state, including the surrounding namesake National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park ! Not only that, but making it to the top of Texas also completely shatters the common misconception that Texas is all just flat and boring!

Spring break in Texas at Guadalupe Peak

This trail contains many dimensions, from a trailhead that originates in the high desert, then proceeds through ponderosa tunnels, to emerge at a barren summit enclosed by rocky ledges and cliffs.

This 8 mile hike that gains over 2,000 feet in elevation is a day hike, but you can choose to primitive camp beneath the summit if you want to extend your hike, or, after completing your hike of Guadalupe Peak, you can top off the experience by sampling the rest of the best of Guadalupe Mountains National Park , a region overflowing with desert, forest, and canyon hikes that highlight all the unique ecosystems in Texas!

Guadalupe Mountains National Park

For a National Park enclosed by the starch Chihuahuan desert, there are a surprising amount of waterfalls to be discovered here!  And who doesn’t appreciate a good waterfall on their spring break in Texas?  What makes these waterfalls all the more impressive and beautiful to behold is their stark contrast to their surroundings, proving that even deserts can produce vibrant life!  For your waterfall appreciating pleasure, here are your top Big Bend waterfalls:

  • Cattail Falls
  • The Boot Spring Trail
  • The Window Trail
  • Pine Canyon waterfall

And don’t forget to check out the 10 BEST hikes in Big Bend National Park !

A majority of those who visit the Rio Grande River do so from its shorelines, or from trails such as the Santa Elena Trail in Big Bend National Park.  But a way to amp up this experience is to kayak the Rio Grande River in Santa Elena Canyon on your spring break in Texas!  The best place for a day, or multi-day, kayaking adventure on the Rio Grande River is in the Santa Elena Canyon!

Kayaking the Rio Grande River in Santa Elena Canyon

#4: Visit a Ghost Town in  Terlingua

Terlingua embodies the meaning of funkiness, and it is also a ideal jumping off spot for spring break adventures in southern Texas!  So whether you choose to call this town home base for some of your other local explorations, such as waterfall hiking in Big Bend or kayaking canyon rivers on the Rio Grande , or simply want to wander around a genuine, old western, ghost town of Texas, this is the most eclectic town in which you can spend a spring break in Texas!

Did you know that the 2nd largest canyon in the United States is in West Texas?  The Texas state park known as Palo Duro Canyon State Park houses the immense “Grand Canyon in Texas”, making it an ideal spring break in Texas location for those who crave red rock hiking and camping under unfiltered, solitary night skies!  My recommendation for the best hike in Palo Duro?  That title would have to go to the iconic Lighthouse Trail hike !

#6: Runcation through Wildflowers in Hill Country

Hill Country in Texas puts on a true show in the spring with its native wildflower blooms!  The best way to experience these never-ending fields of nature’s artistic display is to lace up a pair of shoes and go for a run on a rural Hill Country road or trail.  There are a couple superb half marathons in Texas that highlight springtime in Hill Country, or you can just go for an impromptu run through serene Hill Country towns like Fredericksburg, Luckenbach, Johnson City, or Burnet.  If you feel up for a little add on side trip, check out the hiking at Enchanted Rock State Natural Area , including the iconic granite dome of the Enchanted Rock Trail, outside Fredericksburg!

Surprisingly, there are many options for spending a spring break in Texas underground!  Most of the grandest caves are in the central region of Texas, hewn from the hilly terrain characteristic of this region.

  • Natural Bridge Caverns in San Antonio
  • Longhorn Cavern in Burnet
  • Inner Space Cavern in Georgetown
  • Cascade Caverns in Boerne

Beaches can get a little stereotypical and dicey when it comes to finding a unique, uncrowded, off the beaten path, destination in which to spend spring break in Texas, but Galveston is a solid option for those who need to get sandy over their spring break!  This beach town has a down home feel to it, with a whimsical boardwalk found at Pleasure Pier .  The boardwalk and the adjacent beach are a great option for taking a jog too!

The beach at Galveston is one of the best spring break in Texas destinations

A large chunk of the state’s population resides in the metropolis of Dallas Fort Worth, and sometimes a staycation is what is needed for a spring break in Texas!  Not to fear, you can still experience the great outdoors, even in the heart of the city.  These state parks are full of hiking and camping opportunities , and bonus, they are all within close reach of Dallas Fort Worth!

#10: Visit Abandoned Mines and Plane Crashes in El Paso

For those that maybe want a hint of eerie in their active travel spring break plans, there are two places in El Paso  where this can be achieved!  The only tin mines to ever exist in the United States lie abandoned underground, at the base of the rugged Franklin Mountains in Franklin Mountains State Park.  Bring your flashlight, because once you reach the tin mines, you can actually go underground and explore the depths.

If above ground is more your thing, then take on the challenging uphill climb to the B-36 Plane Crash site, located off trail along the Thousand Steps Trail in El Paso.  This hike is more or less boulder climbing and rock navigating in the ridges between the Franklin Mountains, with a chance to see the scattered remnants of a B-36 crash.

After you make it to both of these sights, there are plenty of other outdoor highlights to keep you occupied in El Paso , including biking, rock climbing, and additional hiking trails, for the remaining days of your spring break in Texas!

#11: Get Swampy at Caddo Lake State Park

One of the truly unique finds in Texas are its swamps, and the best one is Caddo Lake, located in far east Texas.  Enjoy a spring break in Texas full of navigating moss laden swamps by foot or boat, in Caddo Lake State Park !

Not only is Hueco Tanks State Park renowned across the state of Texas for its climbing opportunities, but it is also well loved across the United States as a premier destination for rock climbers.  If you have ever wanted to try your hand at this adventurous active travel opportunity, or if you are already well versed in rock climbing and looking for an engaging destination, Hueco Tanks is an ideal place to get in touch with your inner rock climber over spring break in Texas!

The great state of Texas is home to every kind of ecosystem, and that includes forests.  Three National Forests grace its eastern fronts, so if you are looking for a place to do some forest hiking or shady camping over spring break, look no further than these 3 National Forests, plus the foliaged trails and campgrounds they respectively call home:

  • Angelina National Forest
  • Sabine National Forest
  • Davy Crockett National Forest

Forests in East Texas

This is where you go to get in touch with your inner child over spring break in Texas, and it is one of my personal favorites that I keep going back to!  It is impossible not to enjoy sand sledding, or simply to appreciate the majesty and grandeur of these extensive sand dunes, found right in the middle of barren west Texas, miles and miles from the nearest beach!

There are several ways to appreciate Monahans Sandhills State Park .  First, and highly recommended, you can rent a disc from the Visitor’s Center and slide down them (or bring your own disc).  Secondly, you can hike them.  And thirdly, you can camp among them, and fully appreciate the stunning panoramas that sunrises and sunsets put on here over a blanket of ivory hills.  The imaginative whimsical-ness of Monahans is one of the reason it easily lands on the list of best spring break destinations in Texas!

Sand surfing at Monahans Sandhills State Park

Another great option for those who appreciate red rock canyon tapestries! The humble Caprock Canyon State Park is home to another beautiful Texas canyon, as well as the only resident bison herd in the state.  Just imagine, climbing the trails of Caprock Canyon over spring break, with the chance to intermingle with Texas bison!

Thank you for these suggestions. I know you can’t list everything, but I thought I might suggest one additional trip that is fantastic as well. The Caverns of Sonora are in Sonora, Texas, a beautiful little town at the junction of I-10 and US 277. The caverns there are still alive, with active water flows, and the lighting is spectacular. From there, a short drive (40 miles – this is Texas) gets you to Lake Amistad, which is a border lake and quite beautiful with great fishing and recreation. Big Bend is also a drive, but in the vicinity to the west, as are Fredericksburg and Kerrvile to the east and southeast, respectively. Great town, wonderful people, lots to see and do.

Hi Charles, thanks for pointing out these additional fantastic options! I have heard of the Caverns of Sonora, I will add them to my bucketlist! They sound fascinating. You are also correct about Big Bend, Fredericksburg, and Kerrville, I wish I had time to visit every single place in Texas as there are so many great spots!

Spring Break at South Padre Island: The Ultimate Guide

By: Author texasonly

spring break at south padre island pin image

Spring Break at South Padre Island has a standing reputation of being the ultimate Texas Spring Break destination.

College students flock to the small island, on the southernmost tip of the state on the Texas Gulf Coast, to experience the island’s tropical weather and beautiful beaches.

The island’s prime location, next to the Mexico border, is a draw for many Texas spring breakers and one of the best places to visit in Texas .

South Padre Island Spring Break is comparable to the party scene experienced in Daytona Beach, boasting loads of activities for spring breakers to enjoy.

With night clubs, poolside parties, beach activities, delicious food, and plenty of water sports, Spring Break in South Padre has something for everyone and is a true hot spot.

Believe it or not, South Padre is also a great Spring Break destination for couples and families.

In this post, I want to explore both sides of South Padre Island, Texas, for different spring breakers: those looking for the party scene and those looking for the quieter side of South Padre Island.

But first, let’s dive into some general information about the island that is good for everyone! And remember, planning ahead is highly recommended for Spring Break trips, as the island gets crowded!

How to Get to South Padre Island

aerial view of South Padre Island

If you are down for a Texas road trip , you can drive to Padre Island. Remember that Texas is a vast state, and you might be in for a long drive!

Flying to South Padre Island, Texas, renting a car, or taking the shuttle is also an option.

The nearest airports are McAllen International Airport (MFE) in McAllen, Texas, Valley International Airport (HRL) in Harlingen, Texas, and Brownsville South Padre International Airport (BRO) in Brownsville.

These airports are small, and the airlines servicing them are limited so prices can get a bit high.

HRL and BRO airports offer a shuttle service to get you onto the island. The shuttle from BRO is free, while the shuttle from HRL has a fee.

Getting Around South Padre Island

spring break trips texas

Once on the island, you may or may not need a car, depending on where you are staying.

A free shuttle service, the Island Metro , runs up and down the island and goes to Port Isabel.

Of course, the island also has both Uber and Lyft available, and these are the best options if you are on the island to party. We never want you to drink and drive!

Walking is also a great way to get around, as most things are within walking distance. The island is only half a mile wide at its widest point.

One of our favorite ways to get around South Padre Island (and Port Aransas ) is to rent a golf cart.

You will see golf carts, scooters, and bicycles all over the island. Each makes for a fun mode of transportation and a great Spring Break memory.

Where to Stay on South Padre Island

Areas of the island.

spring break trips texas

Of course, for the best experience, you want to stay on the island; remember that you must book far in advance, especially during Texas week (when Texas schools are on Spring Break).

I would recommend booking your accommodations no later than January!

The east side of the South Padre is the side on the Gulf Coast. This side of the island is home to many beaches, restaurants, and accommodations.

The west side of the island faces the Texas mainland. This means there are fewer beaches, but there are still many dining and entertainment options. These accommodations on the island’s west side are generally calmer and more affordable for Spring Break.

The island’s north side has fewer accommodations for visitors and more permanent homes. This is a great place for families looking to stay away from some of the crowds. Try to find a vacation rental in this area if that is you.

The island’s south side puts you in the middle of the Spring Break action, so if you are looking for a party package, this is where you want to be.

South Padre Island Accommodations

beach South Padre Island

Of course, there are a lot of accommodations on South Padre Island, so this list isn’t comprehensive. With that in mind, here are a few places to consider for your South Padre Island Spring Break.

Budget Hotels in South Padre Island

These hotels traditionally come in around $150 a night.

  • Best Western Beachside Inn
  • Ramada by Wyndham South Padre Island

Mid-Range Hotels

These hotels include many well-known brands. Some are beachfront, and some are not, so please verify before booking if that is important to you.

  • Comfort Suites Beachside
  • Hilton Garden Inn South Padre Island
  • Courtyard by Marriott South Padre Island

Luxury Hotels South Padre Island

These South Padre Island hotels offer more amenities and more luxurious accommodations. Of course, that means they also come with a higher price tag.

  • Margaritaville Beach Resort
  • Isla Grand Beach Resort
  • Holiday Inn Beach Resort South Padre Island
  • Sapphire Luxury Beachfront Rentals
  • La Isla Residence Luxury Condominiums

Campsites on South Padre Island

There are also campsites available on the island. Here are a few to consider:

  • Isla Blanca Park
  • South Padre Island KOA
  • Andy Bowie Park

Brownsville

If you can’t find accommodations on South Padre Island that fit your needs, you can stay in Brownville, Texas.

Brownsville is the southernmost city in Texas and is an affordable option for your South Padre Spring Break.

Staying in Brownsville means driving onto the island, which can take 30+ minutes, depending on where you stay and the traffic conditions.

South Padre Island Spring Break Things to Do

Visit the beach.

Spring Break South Padre Island beach

The beaches on South Padre Island are some of the best beaches in Texas and one of the biggest draws to this area.

Hitting the beach is one of the favorite daytime activities for college students and families.

Of course, you will find an area with a Spring Break party on the beach, but you can also enjoy a quieter beach scene.

The party scene can be found at Clayton’s Beach Bar, open from 12 pm until 6 pm daily in March.

Clayton’s Beach Bar is one of the go-to events for the ultimate South Padre Island Spring Break. Their daily events include DJs, live music performances, and fun, competitive games to keep the party going!

Like most coastal areas, South Padre offers a snorkel tour and private boat charters for visitors to enjoy.

If parasailing or taking kiteboarding lessons is your style, you can do that on the beach, too!

If you want to try your hand at bay fishing, check out this half-day bay fishing tour , or for the ultimate fishing experience, grab some friends and book a private bay fishing tour .

Visit the Nature Center

Go Shopping

When you have had your fill of the beach, head out and shop while on the island.

South Padre has fun and quirky shops, perfect for souvenir hunting.

Of course, you can also find great t-shirts, swimsuits, sunglasses, and items you might need for the beach!

Where to Eat, Drink, and Party on South Padre Island

Spring Break South Padre Island beach party

Louie’s defines Spring Break party thanks to its epic dance parties, DJs, and multiple decks over Laguna Madre Bay.

Louie’s Backyard is the place to be at night on South Padre Island.

Dirty Al’s

Dirty Al’s has you covered if you want some delicious seafood. You have to check out the fried shrimp, trust me!

Wanna Wanna Beach Bar and Grill

South Padre Island seems like the Destin of Texas! Would love to check out the Sea Turtle Inc!

Sea Turtle Inc is so great. South Padre is definitely different than Destin, but it is our version. :)

Wow!! I have friends who have second homes on South Padre Island and they have told me that is is party central during Spring Break. I live near Cancun so I get it!! Looks like a place I might enjoy visiting when the crowds are gone.... The beaches are lovely!

It really is a great beach community, but, yes, it is really crowded for spring break.

Spring Break Ideas In Texas

Spring Break ideas in Texas

Hey, families, here are some fantastic spring break ideas in Texas!

You may be sending your kids off somewhere fun for spring break or going as a family. If you are going as a family, we have fantastic spring break ideas in Texas for families you’ll want to consider for a fun time. Some places are obvious, but you and your crew may not have thought of some of the others we came up with. Nonetheless, these favorite spring break destinations rock!

I scoured for information from my favorite Texas travel magazines, on the internet, and from Texas partners I’ve had the privilege to work with for the best spring break destinations for the upcoming school break.

Does your school give long spring breaks? My grandson gets 11 days (counting the weekends) for spring break. That’s enough time for anyone to take a road trip or even a flight to the other side of Texas. Grab your favorite drink and check out these places to relax and have fun somewhere other than your home area.

2022 Spring Break Ideas In Texas

Things To Do For Spring Break In Texas

Spring break at any beach will be busy during this time, which is considered “peak season,” so if you’re not going, for this reason, save these beach trips for early summer. If you’re not ready to go on a Texas spring break trip, bookmark this info for a summer vacation!

Check out this list of fantastic places to visit during spring break in the Lone Star State! So, as you know, all of these ideas consist of outdoor activities.

2022 Spring Break Ideas In Texas

Spend Spring Break At Texas Gulf Coast

Preresiquite: You must like crowds!

Visit South Padre Island

Spend spring break near the shore banks, as their ads say. South Padre spring break (called College Spring Break on the site) has long been an excellent place for spring breakers. With miles and miles of warm and sunny Gulf Coast beaches, it’s no wonder many travelers traverse here every spring break in Texas. Plus, hotels offer spring break packages, so check that out.

Sandy beaches under bare feet sound good to me!

While there, look up ‘how to build a sand castle’ or ‘where to make sand castles.’ This outdoor activity is a lot of fun for all ages.

Ask about South Padre spring break packages. They are ready for college students for 2024!

Top Beach Getaways In Texas

Eat Your Way Through Galveston

It is another excellent beach destination everyone flocks to during spring break. While you’re there, you may want to visit Galveston’s Historic Pleasure Pier with a roller coaster, all kinds of rides for the kiddos, carnival games, restaurants, and places to shop for souvenirs and gifts. I love dining at one of Galveston’s seafood restaurants for my favorite seafood dinner – blackened salmon.

DIG IT In Katy, Texas (Houston Area)

If you haven’t heard of Dig World, it is Texas’s first heavy construction equipment-themed amusement park. The 3.5-acre+ site is a can’t-miss attraction for families, especially those looking for something unique to do over spring break.

Dig World is designed to provide a safe hands-on experience for families with the unique opportunity to operate heavy equipment, such as full-size caterpillar mini-excavators, skid steers, and UTVs. Other attractions include a gem mining station, a playground, and a turf field with games.

Tickets: $24.95 (going fast)

Rediscover Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi offers beach after beach and places along the coastline with much to do.

  • Padre Bali Park – is a 400-acre coast known for surfing, shore fishing, and the Bob Hall Pier that extends 1250 feet into the gulf. That would make an excellent walk for many – me included.
  • North Packery Beach – is famous for surfing, jet skiing, kiteboarding (whatever that is), and wakeboarding. And, bring your pole because fishing in the warm water is good too.
  • Mustang Island is the most searched beach in Corpus on the internet. You know it’ll be packed this year, especially since the state park is also here. Bring binoculars because I read that birding is good, and you may see other wildlife off in the distance. If you like to kayak, check out the Mustang Island Paddling Trail , consisting of trails that take you on a journey.
  • Whitecap Beach is a beautiful white sandy beach suitable for small groups or singles. Bring your bike or jog or walk around here.
  • And there’s also Padre Island National Seashore, North Beach, and McGee Beach.

Lots to check out and consider. The whole family would love any part of Corpus Christi’s beaches.

My dream vacation is to go horseback riding alongside the shorelines of the beach …and this is something to do here and in SPI. I finally did this (2022) on Brazosport’s Country Beach (Galveston area).

Bird Watch In Port Aransas

Beachgoers love the miles of sunny beaches, nature preserves, and waterways. Port Aransas is a smaller beach and could be less crowded than its neighboring beaches. You’ll have to get a beach parking pass before arriving. I’ve read that there are many birds to watch for, so bring your binoculars.

Cajun Capital of Texas – Port Author

Recently, Port Author was named Cajun Capital of Texas . If your family loves Cajun food, plan spring break to come to this town. You’ll have plenty of options for great Cajun food.

2023 Spring Break Ideas In Texas

Visit A State Park In Texas For Spring Break

State parks make great spring break ideas for nature lovers who love to wander the nature trails that all state parks provide, especially if you’re on a budget. You can either google “Texas state parks near me” or go here – Texas State Parks.Gov and type in the location you are searching. Some state parks will have special events going on during our spring break – so be sure to watch for that.

Not sure if you knew, but tent camping is on the rise for families. It’s a great outdoor activity to make memories. Tent camping doesn’t have to be expensive.

2023 Spring Break Ideas In Texas

Tour Texas Hill Country

Central Texas, where the Texas Hill Country is located, is a popular destination anytime and for any reason, but one good reason would be spring break. There will be special events, live music, and wineries to visit.

Johnson City is one of the Hill Country destinations not to miss (my favorite small town in the Hill Country). It’s a small but mighty town offering visitors a place to relax and enjoy the view of the vast countryside, plus wineries downtown. Speaking of Texas State Parks – Pedernales State Park is located in Johnson City and is a beautiful park all year round. Note: Make online reservations to visit because it will get busy, and they only allow a certain number of people on any given day.

Frolick In Austin, Texas For Spring Break

I’m sure Sixth Street will be wild and quite hectic as many high school students flock here every chance they get – plus college students roaming the streets. And no doubt, Lake Travis will be booming with boats and other watercraft. Call me old, but if I were to go here during spring break, I would have to find a peaceful cabin in the woods with plenty of amenities and stay there until it’s over…but that’s just me.

Enjoy Resort Life At Lake Texoma

Did you know there is a beautiful resort near Lake Texoma?

Lake Texoma is great for boating, fishing, swimming, and camping for spring break. Finding a cabin near the lake or in the woods would be perfect. Check out Tanglewood Resort on Lake Texoma. It would make a great place for the whole family to spend spring break – it was so much fun there!

Float San Marcos River

If floating in the freezing river is your thing, consider spending time in San Marcos. Other things to do in this area are shopping, hiking, picnicking, and playing fetch with your dog.

2022 Spring Break Ideas In Texas

Tube The Rivers In New Braunfels

Natural Bridge Caverns, with its zip line course, would be an excellent choice for my family, as would tubing down the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers. As long as the weather is nice, this area would make an excellent choice for spring breakers. Check out this popular article from one of our writers – New Braunfels For Families . As you probably know already – you must not mind crowds!

Stroll The San Antonio Riverwalk

The San Antonio River Walk is at the forefront for spring breakers and will probably be crowded, so preparing ahead is vital to having a good time. Kids of all ages will love Six Flags Fiesta Texas, and yes, it’s open for spring break. In recent articles, Texas Travel Talk has covered The Westin Riverwalk San Antonio and the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter .

See What’s New In Waco

Take your family and the kids to Waco, as it’s a lovely place for everyone. Magnolia Market has a vast lawn in the center of it all and is fun for picnics and playing yard games, so get there early for a spot on the grass –– bring a blanket to sit on. Also, shops and more food trucks are lined up than ever before. And don’t forget about the Dr. Pepper Museum, where certainly they sell the soda in those old bottles!

Boca Chica State Park is one of those destinations ideal for those who want to spend their Spring Break enjoying the majesty of nature instead of partying. This large park is now known as Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge and is located in the Boca Chica Subdelta of the Rio Grande, close to Brownsville. A spectacular sandy eight-mile beach lies on a narrow spit of land between the delta of Rio Grande delta and the lower Laguna Madre salt flats, where the U.S. stops and Mexico begins. It is wild and untamed, with no facilities and only one village, but it is simply heavenly for surfing, swimming, snorkeling, wading, picnicking, camping, fishing, birding, and distressing. You can spot the endangered Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles nesting, watch the aplomado and peregrine falcons migrating, take endless walks through mangrove marshes and tidal salt flats, and for a few days forget about civilization. No alcohol is allowed in the park. More beaches in Texas

Lake Texoma

Lake Texoma

One of the largest artificial lakes in the States, shared between Texas and Oklahoma, Lake Texoma is famous for great sailing, fishing, and other fun activities on the water. It is your chance to catch a record smallmouth bass or just cruise the deep, clear waters with a cooler full of beer and a bunch of friends. You can bring your own boat as there are several marinas around the lake. Rent one on the lake or hop on the paddlewheel riverboat Texoma Bell Riverboat at Durant, OK and enjoy the sights or a dinner under the stars. If you are interested in history, The Grayson County Frontier Village in Denison, TX has fascinating exhibits that include a one-room cabin, photos, and historic artifacts. The town of Sherman in Texas features lovely 1870 architecture on the Heritage Row.

Comal River

Comal River

A charming small city near San Antonio, Texas, New Braunfels is a well-known and popular destination for Spring Break. While Downtown New Braunfels offers the typical kind of Spring Break entertainment such as live music and great restaurants, the New Braunfels’ real claim to fame and biggest attractions are its two lovely rivers, the Comal and the Guadalupe. There is something very soothing about slowly drifting down the river in one of the large tubes, with or without drink in your hand, with your friends or family. Comal River is beautiful, pristine, and spring-fed, with its headwaters at the Edwards Aquifer. There is a range of experienced outfitters who will provide you with the instructions and tube and let you go with the flow. You can also join tubing group at the Schlitterbahn Waterpark. While alcoholic drinks are allowed on Comal River, keep in mind that no disposable drink containers are permitted.

San Marcos River

San Marcos River

A home to Texas State University and only an hour from Austin, the small town of San Marcos on San Marcos River is lively year around. When Spring Break comes, everyone hits the river, where you can have the most fun. River tubing is by far the most popular activity on the river for a good reason. The stretch of the river used for tubing is short, only about a mile, but you can keep going back to the starting point and go again and again. Incredibly clear water with a constant temperature of 72 degrees flows peacefully between the verdant banks. The river runs through protected parks and there is almost no development, making it perfect for slow, relaxed tubing down the river surrounded by giant, green elephant ears plants. Alcoholic drinks are allowed, and most tubing outfitters will have a cooler with ice and booze ready for you. With a bunch a friends, it is hard to imagine a better way to spend an afternoon on a warm day in May. More day trips from San Antonio

Guadalupe River

Guadalupe River

If you decided to spend your Spring Break in Texas Hill Country, your main reason is probably all the fun you can have tubing down Guadalupe River. To see just how beautiful this area is, start your visit by driving on the River Road along the Guadalupe River, especially the stretch between New Braunfels and Canyon Lake. This incredibly scenic road surrounded by lush greenery and small tumbling overflows is also the location of most tubing outfitters, so you might start right there. All outfitters are very experienced and will tell you how fast you can go depending on how much water there is in the river at the time. The Upper Guadalupe River is smaller and faster than the lower stream, shaded by bald cypress and pecan trees and is surrounded by limestone banks. The lower river between Canyon Dam and New Braunfels is very popular for tubing and tends to be crowded during the holidays and weekends. You might like to know that drinking alcoholic beverages in moderation is allowed while tubing in this area as long as you do not use disposable containers. More day trips from Fort Worth

Austin

Whether you are a student at one of Austin ’s many universities or studying anywhere else in Texas, you know that Austin is the right place for Spring Break because it’s a city that knows how to party. There is something for everyone regardless of what kind of music you like, what your favorite kind of craft beer is, or what food you prefer. Start at Sixth Street, one of the most popular nightlife districts in town, with inexpensive drinks, live music, and dancing. Rainey Street is perfect for a laid-back evening with local micro-brews, diverse food trucks, and loud games of corn hole. Then there is the Warehouse District and the SoCo. Red River District, which gave Austin the name The Live Music Capital of the World®. You will have to go back to school long before you have a chance to explore all Austin has to offer. If outdoor activities are your thing, take a cruise on Lady Bird Lake, get on the Butler Hike and Bike Trail or, take a dip in Austin's favorite Barton Springs Pool.

Where to go for spring break in Texas

With spring break in Texas on the horizon, it’s time to start getting excited about all that the Lone Star State has to offer. This guide selects a few of the amazing spots you can visit between late February and the end of April. It’s an eclectic bunch, counting dune-backed barrier islands, immersive cityscapes, and gorgeous backcountry. Where will you pick?

A Texan spring break on the coast

A balcony with a plate of nachos and salsa overlooks a pool in a palm-shaded garden by Mustang Beach

Texas is blessed with uber-long lengths of coastline on the Gulf of Mexico, not to mention springtime temperatures that are firmly in bikini and boardshort territory. If that sounds like your sort of spring break, the options below could be right on.

South Padre Island – spring break haven extraordinaire

Get ready to rumble to MTV stage sets and off-the-hook DJ parties, to hit poolsides with cold beers in tow and dance the flip flops off, in South Padre Island. For college goers on the hunt for somewhere wild and famous, this is surely it. There are oodles of island rentals that front the beaches, too, so you can put yourself right in the thick of the action from the get-go.

Corpus Christi is a cheap alternative

Not got the budget for South Padre? Corpus Christi is a fine alternative. It’s a couple of hours to the north, set in a wide bay with a few barrier islands fringing the Gulf of Mexico. Those tend to be the focus of the action, so hop on a ferry out to Port Aransas and Mustang Beach and you’ll find open-air dance parties pumping well after sundown. Those are also the spots to snag multi-bedroom condos with swimming pools just meters from where the waves roll in.

Top family destinations for spring break in Texas

A fire pit flickers on the deck of a cozy cottage in San Antonio, Texas

Texas has a feast of family destinations. From the rattling trolleys of old Galveston to the gurgling Riverwalk of San Antonio, there’s rarely a dull moment for spring breakers with the kids in tow…

Galveston’s loaded with draws

Galveston’s brimming with enticing vacation homes. But you might not even want to spend much time by the poolside of your condo, what with the Seawall Urban Park and its twirling Ferris wheel, the Pleasure Pier’s gaming arcades, and the gushing slides and wave pools of Schlitterbahn Waterpark beckoning elsewhere.

San Antonio – a city filled with family fun

There’s enough to keep any crew going in the bumping city of San Antonio . The Riverwalk is a fizzing mix of Tex-Mex eateries and brew bars, all steps from the enthralling historical wonders of the Alamo. Trips out of town, meanwhile, could include the loop-de-lopping rollercoasters and heart-thumping Iron Rattler of Six Flags Fiesta Texas, or subterranean expeditions into the Cascade Caverns.

Classic recreation on Lewisville Lake

The beauty of choosing Lewisville Lake for your spring break in Texas is that you won’t have to venture far from the heart of either Dallas or Fort Worth. An all-in-one sports and relaxation destination, it’s got boating marinas and health clubs, which means a trip filled with water skiing, sailing, fishing, and more.

A spring break in Texas countryside

The sun drenches a wood-built cabin with a deck in the Texan Hill Country

With a loud “yehaa” and a swirl of the lasso, you can really get in the spirit of the Old West out in the countryside of the Lone Star State. But it doesn’t end there, because spring break in Texas is a perfect time to score bargain stays on Hill Country wineries or venture out to long-lost cabins on the edges of Lake Texoma, too.

Is this the way to Amarillo ? Maybe. Just maybe.

You’ll be able to cruise down the dusty courses of Route 66, see the carved hoodoo spires of Palo Duro Canyon, and channel your inner cowboy in Amarillo. A cracking spot for budding adventurers, the nearby state parks have red-rock hiking trails, climbing walls, and even ziplines that go across deep gorges.

Get-away-from-it-all cabins on Lake Texoma

With eagles flitting through the skies overhead, waters lapping against rocky shores, and oodles of cabin-style retreats dotting the banks, Lake Texoma is a doozy for those in search of a real escape come March or April. You won’t have any of the loud crowds here, which means it can be just you, nature, and the fishing pole.

The Hill Country – a romantic spring break in Texas

It’s the three W’s in the Hill Country around San Antonio – wedding venues, wonderful scenery, and wineries. The first can be found in vacation homes on old farms or ranches, with swimming pools and waterfalls in their sweeping grounds. The views are everywhere you look – think oak and cedar-topped hills spilling into the blue-tinted Frio River. And then there are the wineries, which offer Texas’s best tipples and might even have B&Bs on site.

10 unique, family-friendly ideas for Texas spring break fun

Corpus Christi ad

Even though it may feel as though the holidays just ended, spring break is just around the corner. If you’re looking for some unique, family-friendly ideas for spring break fun, don’t miss this carefully curated list, which spotlights everything from two-stepping your way across Gruene Hall (yes, kids are welcome!) to participating in an active art installation by spray-painting the cars that jut from the ground at Amarillo’s Cadillac Ranch.

Amarillo: Make your mark at Cadillac Ranch

spring break trips texas

Cadillac Ranch is an interactive art exhibit in Amaraillo, Texas.

The sight of 10 brightly painted Cadillacs spiking out of the ground is fascinating enough, but you can also grab a spray paint can and leave your own mark on this Amarillo art installation, which has been stopping traffic since 1974. While you’re in town – even if you’re just pitstopping on the way to Colorado – see if you can complete the 72-ounce steak challenge at Big Texan Steak Ranch. If you can eat the whole 72-ounce steak, you get it free. https://www.visitamarillo.com

Corpus Christi: Salute the flagship Whataburger

Yes, there’s a flagship Whataburger located in Corpus Christi. Yes, it has an elevator. And yes, it has oceanfront views. This two-story tribute to Texas’ favorite burger chain – and its founder, Harmon Dobson – sits right along the water in downtown Corpus Christi, not far from another must-see attraction: the Mirador de la Flor statue, which honors Tejano music queen Selena Quintanilla-Perez. https://www.visitcorpuschristitx.org

Dallas: Go swimming on the edge at The Joule

spring break trips texas

The Joule is a stunning, art-filled hotel on Dallas’ Main Street. Contributed by The Joule

It’s easy to feel right at home at The Joule, a stunning downtown Dallas hotel that proves it’s possible to be both chic and family-friendly. Walking through the lobby and hallways feels like visiting an approachable yet beautiful museum thanks to the prized pieces from proprietor Tim Headington that are showcased throughout the building. Perhaps no piece is more spectacular, however, than Tony Tasset’s 30-foot-tall sculpture, “Eye,” which is made out of fiberglass, resin, and steel, and crafted to look like, well, the artist’s own eye. One excellent place to view “Eye,” which sits along Dallas’ Main Street on Joule property, is the hotel’s pool, which functions as a piece of art in its own right. Located on the 10th floor, the 8-foot cantilevered pool juts out over Main Street below, giving visitors the sensation of swimming over the hotel’s edge. https://www.thejouledallas.com/

Galveston: Take a tree sculpture tour

From the tranquil beaches to the bustling Pleasure Pier, Galveston is a no-brainer when it comes to spring break fun. And for a free activity that seamlessly blends history and art, look no further than a self-guided tree sculpture tour. You see, Galveston has seen its share of devastation thanks to hurricanes that frequently ravage its shores, but rather than lamenting their losses, a group of homeowners joined together to create incredible tree sculptures out of that devastation. You can view the sculptures, which incorporate themes including mermaids, dolphins, and even SpongeBob SquarePants, across the island, with many being centered in the city’s East End Historic District. https://www.Galveston.com/treesculpturetour

Gruene: Hit the dancefloor at Gruene Hall

spring break trips texas

Gruene Hall is a can’t-miss destination between Austin and San Antonio. Contributed

Little Gruene, located between Austin and San Antonio, has become a tourist darling in recent years thanks to its penchant for “gently resisting change,” and the heartbeat of this town is Gruene Hall. Built in 1878, Gruene Hall is the state’s oldest continually operating dancehall and features live music every day. Upcoming performers include Dale Watson, Eli Young Band, and Ray Wylie Hubbard. https://gruenehall.com/

Houston: Wander through t he Beer Can House

When people talk about Houston’s art scene, that talk isn’t just limited to museums – there’s also a quirky, experimental, and unexpected vibe here that surprises you when you least expect it. Case in point: the Beer Can House. Started one drink at a time in 1968 by John Milkovisch, a retired upholsterer for the Southern Pacific Railroad, the Beer Can House is now adorned with an estimated 50,000 beer cans and stands as a monument to recycling. It’s open for tours from 1-5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays; reservations are required and admission is $5. Children under 12 are free. https://www.orangeshow.org/beer-can-house

Marfa: Take in the mysterious lights

Are they ghost lights or simply the atmospheric reflections of cars and campfires? To visit Marfa and take in the mysterious Marfa Lights is to join an ongoing conversation about what makes blue, red and white orbs appear randomly each night – regardless of the weather – in this West Texas town. https://www.visitmarfa.com/marfa-lights

Port Aransas: Learn how to build the perfect sandcastle

spring break trips texas

Port Aransas is famous for its sandcastles, and you can learn to build them when you visit, too. Kristin Finan photo

Port Aransas is famous for its sandcastles – there’s even a massive festival called  Texas SandFest  that draws visitors from all over the world (this year it will be held April 19-21). But you can actually learn to build a sandcastle any time of year thanks to Mark Landrum, aka “the  Port Aransas Sandcastle Guy .” With the help of buckets, shovels and carving tools, Landrum will guide adults and kids alike through a 45-minute building lesson that incorporates essential skills such as how to stack the sand at the base of your castle and how to carve a staircase. https://sandrum.com

Sugar Land: Zip your way across Brazos River Park

Located about a half-hour from downtown Houston, Sugar Land served as the site of major U.S. sugar producer Imperial Sugar’s headquarters from 1843 to 2003, when the refinery shuttered its doors. These days, the city has garnered a sweet reputation for being among the most diverse cities in the nation and frequently finds itself on the top of nationwide rankings. One idyllic way to experience Sugar Land is to see it from the sky during a zipline tour with Go Ape Zipline and Adventure Park , a 19-acre tree-top adventure facility complete with zip lines, climbing nets, and a tree canopy rope course that’s located within the beautifully green Brazos River Park. https://www.goape.com/location/texas-houston/

Waco: Float on at the Dr Pepper Museum

Waco has experienced a renaissance in recent years (thanks, Chip and Joanna Gaines!) but it’s also home to many classic attractions that have been courting visitors for decades. Perhaps the greatest example of this is the Dr Pepper Museum, where you can learn all about the state’s beloved soft drink, sample an original Dr Pepper Float, or even make your own soda. http://www.drpeppermuseum.com

Note: If no campsites are available at the state park you want to visit, you can always check the tent campground or RV campground around the area. Some of the RV campgrounds have spots for tent camping. One of our favorites is Lady Bird Johnson Municipal Park in Fredericksburg. It will take you more than 30 minutes to reach one of these Texas State Parks in Hill Country, but hey, you will get to stroll downtown Fredericksburg and the surrounding towns, too. Or, stay at Kerville-Schreiner Park in Kerville. Our new found from last Thanksgiving Break trip.

A Short Note on Texas Hill Country

The Texas Hill Country is one of our favorite places to visit in Texas. We have traveled to this part of Texas several times in all four seasons.

One time we spent the whole Spring Break here and made Fredericksburg our home base. We explored neighboring towns , hiked in the famous Enchanted Rock State Park, and visited some Texas State Parks in the Hill Country area.

Some other times we traveled the world in the Texas Hill Country . In case you do not know, you can see Germany, Easter Island , England, Japan, France , and a few other countries in just this part of Texas.

We also visited the Texas White House , watched the bat emerge from a tunnel , learned about an early farm living in Fredericksburg , and walked in a cavern that looks like an underground river .

So much to do and see when you spend Spring Break in the Texas Hill Country .

Some beautiful parks here and so much water. I particularly like the Blanco park waterfall. Can’t wait until I can visit here.

It’s all water for the spring break in a budget.

Wow, all of these parks look fantastic, and there’s so much to do! Especially loved reading about the Garner State Park with its miles & miles of hiking trails – the perfect spring break on a budget!

They are fantastic parks to visit for the spring break in a budget.

We are avid outdoor people and these parks in Texas Hill Country sound like our kinda place. We have yet to visit this state in the US as we’ve only been to East and West Coast, but we’re looking forward to having that chance in the future. Possibly with a campervan! Would you have any tips for doing this with a campervan or if there are any campervan rentals around?

It’s even easier to do it with campervan. Every one of these state parks have sites for RV or trailer. You just have to make reservations in advance as they fill up quickly.

Wow, love how different these parks seem despite being relatively close to each other! Texas really does have something for everyone!

Such a great idea to avoid the packed beaches over the spring break and head for one of the Texas State Parks instead. Camping with the kids near some waterfalls or a river would be loads of fun. The falls at Blanco State Park look great.

Isn’t it? They can be packed, but not beach packed.

Wow all of those state parks looks amazingly beautiful. With waterfalls and lakes and rivers they truly are great way to spend with the nature. I especially loved Blanco state park, truly stunning with that waterfall. I will add Texas and the state parks on my list.

I am eagerly looking forward for the spring break and I’m already considering the various options. This is nice to see some good budget options. Gorman Falls sounds like a beautiful place to visit. Good that you mentioned about not climbing it – indeed, common sense is not so common. Cliff jumping at Devil’s Waterhole sounds like an awesome thing to do. I wouldn’t miss it! I think I love Guadalupe River State Park the most, there’s so much to do which you can do it all or just relax an entire day!

Great list and they all seem like great places to explore with kids! I would love to visit all of them, but Devil’s Hole at Inks Lake State Park really stands out. It sounds like it would be a great adventure. Tubing or kayaking at South Llano River State Park would be the perfect way to spend an afternoon.

We just made a stop at Devil’s Hole this past Thanksgiving Break. Although we couldn’t swim, we had fun exploring the trails around it.

This sounds like a great trip. I did some cliff jumping in Jamaica so would love to try that activity, and the canoeing and kayaking sounds like fun. Its great to be able to get out in nature in these trying times.

These are great places for outdoor enthusiasts, especially ones who like water activities.

I haven’t spent a lot of time in Texas and these parks look like a great way to experience a little piece of the state. Loved that all these parks feature water. McKinney Falls would be among my first stops Followed by Colorado Bend for the waterfall hike.

Next time you come to Texas, you might put one or two of these state parks to your itinerary.

8 State Parks, wow, Texas is surely blessed with beautiful nature! I haven’t seen any of them, but from your list the McKinney Falls State Park looks the most astounding. I love waterfalls! The Llano River looks perfect for summer time, when you can swim or kayak in the river.

And we have more! I envy people who live in that region because these state parks can be easily reach from where they live.

I am certainly learning a lot from your Texas posts. And finding so many great outdoor spots to visit. I love the variety in the State Parks. Waterfalls and kayaking would certainly be a draw for us. Love that there are hikes for different levels of skill. Blanco State Park would certainly be a cooling spot to visit in the hot Texas summer. I will definitely keep this post.

Thank you, Linda. When you plan a trip to Texas, you must contact me, so we can meet up.

Wow, I would never had assumed that there would be so many waterfalls in what I envision is a flat Texas! I mean Gorman & McKinney Falls are beautiful. But you totally sold me on Cliff-jumping and canoeing by the Devil’s Waterhole at Inks Lake Texas State park. I love all the different swimming, boating, or water sports at all of them but anytime I can jump off a perfectly good cliff into water, I am down…Unless that water is cold!

I know, right? Who would have thought there are waterfalls in Texas? I was skeptical when a lady at the place I volunteer told me about Gorman Falls. Texas State Parks regulars know about Gorman Falls.

This sounds like my kind of a trip. I won’t have the courage to go cliff jumping, but I would love to canoe and kayak. Nature is so rejuvenating

I like the variety of things to do around the parks. It’s perfect places for the whole family.

'The trip of a lifetime' | Texas family visits every Buc-ee's location for spring break

Head's up Buc-ee's lovers! Excitement is in the air, and that's because a new Buc-ee's in Hillsboro opened up on April 21.

The new location is now the largest gas station in Texas occupying 74,000 square feet and offering 120 fueling positions.

"We've been waiting weeks and months for this," Buc-ee's pitmaster, Randy Pauly, said. "Today is the day we get to truly invite the community to our home."

Buc-ee's fans finally have the chance to enjoy their beaver nuggets in Hillsboro. It is something that founder of Buc-ee's is more than excited for.

"I'll tell you of all the things that we do in this company, this is my favorite part," Arch “Beaver” Aplin III, founder of Buc-ee's, said.

Of course, Buc-ee's lovers across the country are excited too.

"I came down just for this opening all the way to Hillsboro from Washington," Brooke Nyhus said.

Visitors also came in from Dallas.

"We had to stop and come over to see and oh my, this is a fantastic opening," Michelle McGowan said.

Doors opened bright and early at 6 a.m.. Judy Martin and her family were the first ones to purchase something in the new Hillsboro Buc-ee's.

On top of that, they recently completed, "the trip of a lifetime," Martin says.

"We went to every single Buc-ee's in the state of Texas," Martin told 6 News. "It was so much fun. I mapped it all out before we went and we had to make sure we made it to every single one of them."

They traveled to a total of 36 Buc-ee's during spring break of 2023 in just one week and made lasting memories. Now, they can proudly say have been to all 37 locations in Texas.

You can check out their Facebook group here .

  • 2024 Spring Break Trip

spring break trips texas

The next day, participants woke up to build-your-own bagels that rivaled Shug’s. After refueling ourselves, we broke down camp and headed to the Grand Canyon South Rim. The drive on this day was a journey: starting off in the quaint mountains of New Mexico, we traversed across more flat plains, entered into awe-inspiring mesa deserts, and finally made it to the park after dark where the Grand Canyon had disappeared into the night. However, the next morning, we led participants to see the sunrise from Mather Point in hopes of a majestic reveal of the illusive canyon. Errant clouds impaired our view of the full sunrise, but we nonetheless saw rays of orange and purple sun cast upon the deep walls of the canyon, which made for quite a picturesque moment!

spring break trips texas

The next day, we headed up to Zion National Park while stopping at some great waypoints conveniently on the highway, including Horseshoe Bend Canyon, which offered perhaps the most picturesque view of the Colorado River imaginable. We then stopped at the Glen Canyon Dam, one of America’s most important feats of engineering. We walked on the bridge hundreds of feet above Glen Canyon while internalizing the impressive strength of the dam in holding back all of Lake Powell. Before reaching our campsite for the night, we took participants through Zion National Park to catch the sun setting upon the Zion canyon from the Overlook Trail.

spring break trips texas

Upon reaching the campsite, however, we realized it was completely overrun with snow and ice, rendering our camping plans useless! The leaders deliberated on alternatives and settled on camping on Bureau of Land Management land conveniently at the foothills of the mountain we were on. Participants got the full primitive camping experience this night as we had no running water or bathrooms. We were all nonetheless grateful for a place to camp for the night and tucked ourselves into our sleeping bags for one last time before the end of the trip.

Waking up at 4:30am, participants were surprisingly awake and eager to hit the road. The long ride back to SMU was filled with laughter, stories from the trip, and music from the various participants as we passed the AUX around the van. Most of all, we reminisced on the amazing trip that had so quicky come to an end. Arriving back at Dedman Rec Center, we had a group hug before parting our separate ways in search of a warm shower.

An enormous thank you to Levi and Dr. Tuggs for helping lead my most memorable trip during my tenure in the OA, as well as the wonderful participants for helping create lifelong memories from our time together!
