Bruce Springsteen makes a triumphant New Jersey homecoming with rare song, bare chest

springsteen tour of new jersey

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The Boss is back in the swamps of Jersey.

Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band kicked off their mini-MetLife Stadium residency Wednesday with a rapturous and cathartic three-hour concert . It was the first of three nights they’ll spend at the Meadowlands venue, with additional shows on Friday and Sunday.

“Hello, my people! It’s great to be in New Jersey,” Springsteen, 73, proclaimed to the crowd of 50,000 strong, many of whom were decked out in new and vintage tour merch. Some carried signs stating it was their first (or 100 th ) Springsteen show, while one young woman was dressed in a full Little Orphan Annie costume.

The band was in an especially buoyant mood, no doubt fueled by the electricity of the home state audience. Fans whooped as guitarist Nils Lofgren did his signature spin across the stage in “Because the Night,” and they shrieked as Springsteen ripped open his shirt mid-encore. The rock icon frequently interacted with the crowd: tossing guitar picks to two stunned boys and gifting his harmonica to one little girl and her elated mom.

“Nobody wants to go home, man!” Springsteen shouted to guitarist Stevie Van Zandt as they waggishly traded goofy expressions under the floodlights of the stadium and an even brighter supermoon. “Thank you, New Jersey. The E Street Band loves you. Thanks for a beautiful welcome home.”

Here are more standout moments from the night:

'Sherry Darling' is a surprise addition to Bruce Springsteen's setlist

Despite one sign in the crowd reading “Play whatever you want, Bruce,” the band didn’t stray far from the usual setlist on its current tour. Springsteen still slicked his hair back before launching into a blistering guitar solo on “Kitty’s Back,” and he still led the horn section in a joyous dance at the front of the stage to close out “Johnny 99.”

But one major deviation was the addition of “Sherry Darling,” making its tour debut Wednesday. “Here’s a little summer beach music for ya,” Springsteen said as he introduced the shimmering anthem, which is taken from his 1980 album “The River" and hasn't been played with the E Street Band since 2017. The singer playfully leaned into the song’s sunny vibes, at one point doing a hula dance during a guitar break.

'Nightshift' brings the audience to its feet

Last November, Springsteen performed his stirring jazz cover of Commodores’ “Nightshift” on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” which is taken from his latest album “Only the Strong Survive.” The soulful classic has since become a set-list staple, with a cool trumpet solo by Curt Ramm and glorious harmonies from the E Street Choir. Although many people in the crowd sat down when the song began, no one was still in their seats by the rousing finish.

His musings on mortality are an emotional highlight

For all the euphoric highs of "Born to Run," "Wrecking Ball" and "Prove It All Night," what makes this current tour so special are the moments when Springsteen takes a beat to reflect. Pictures of late E Street members Danny Federici and Clarence Clemons flash across the screen during "Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out," before he closes out the show with a haunting acoustic rendition of “I’ll See You in My Dreams.”

Earlier in the night, Springsteen wistfully looks back on his teenage bandmate George Theiss, who died in 2018. The poignant story tees up the heartbreaking double punch of "Last Man Standing" and "Backstreets," which never fail to bring us to tears.

“At 15, it's all hellos, and later on, there's a lot more hard goodbyes,” Springsteen says. Later, he recalls his many mementos of Theiss, and places a hand over his heart. “The rest I’ll carry right here, until the end.”

10 of the best Bruce Springsteen landmarks in New Jersey

As the Boss regales Broadway audiences with his show of songs and stories about growin’ up and life in the spotlight, we pick out New Jersey locations that have played a big part in his life and career

Convention Hall, Asbury Park

This impressive building on the Asbury Park boardwalk was built in the late 1920s and is largely used for concerts and sporting events. Since 1999, it has also been the location for Bruce’s tour rehearsals. But Bruce hasn’t been its most raucous resident: in 1956, it was famously the scene of a large-scale riot at a Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers show, after which the mayor threatened to impose a ban on rock’n’roll performances.

A view of the exterior of the famous Convention Hall in Asbury Park, New Jersey, USA.

These days it is crowned by a large illuminated sign reading Greetings From Asbury Park – a reference to the title of Springsteen’s 1973 debut. apboardwalk.com

Atlantic City

At night, casinos illuminated on the Atlantic City boardwalk

Fabled for its beaches, boardwalks and casinos, Atlantic City was also the subject of a 1982 Springsteen single (from the album Nebraska), a slightly desperate, faintly seedy invitation to get dressed up and meet in the city as trouble appeared to brew on the horizon. The song captured the new feel of the city: in the late 1970s, when it sat in heavy decline, a referendum was passed to legalise gambling here, and it swiftly became a destination for gambling, boxing bouts and a kind of Vegas-lite air. Bruce’s accompanying video showed the demolition of the city’s old Blenheim Hotel and shots of the earliest casinos, including Caesar’s, Playboy and Harrah’s.

39½ Institute Street, Freehold

Musician Bruce Springsteen grew up in this home at 39 1/2 Institute Street in Freehold, New Jersey.

This wasn’t Springsteen’s first home (that’s now a church driveway on Randolph Street) but this white wooden home with a porch is where the young Bruce moved in 1958. Fans may recognise it from its appearance as part of the Born in the USA album artwork: on the lyric sheet, the words run over a picture of Springsteen leaning against a sycamore tree in the front yard. In his autobiography, he remembers it had “no hot water, [and] four tiny rooms”. Today, perhaps a little weary of the Bruce pilgrims, there is a stern “no solicitors” sign on the door.

E Street, Belmar

Highway 71 is the main arterial route through Belmar, a small, ocean-side borough of Monmouth County. A few blocks east of here is E Street, a short, one-way street where Bruce’s one-time keyboard player Dave Sancious’s mother lived, and where they would practise in the earliest days. Springsteen duly named his band the E Street Band in its honour. When the band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Springsteen spoke of how “real bands – real bands are made primarily from the neighborhood. From a real time and real place that exists for a little while, then changes and is gone forever.”

The Stone Pony, Asbury Park

The famous rock club The Stone Pony, Asbury Park, NJ, USA.

The Stone Pony has stood here at Ocean Avenue since 1973, a 1,000-capacity venue that is now one of the most well-visited destinations for Springsteen fans. Though Bruce actually launched his career at the Upstage Club , over on Cookman Avenue, it’s the Stone Pony to which his name is forever tied, playing here more than any other venue. He first stepped on stage here in 1974, playing with The Blackberry Booze band, led by Steve Van Zandt and Southside Johnny. Though he never played the Stone Pony with the E Street Band (aside from fundraising shows), in the early 80s he often jammed with the Sunday night band Cats On a Smooth Surface. 913 Ocean Avenue, stoneponyonline.com

7½ West End Court, Long Branch

7½, West End Court, Long Branch, New Jersey

In the year he lived in this cottage, a block or so from the beach in Long Branch, the 25-year-old Springsteen wrote the bulk of his album Born to Run. Springsteen has spoken of the Aeolian piano that once stood in the living room and the kitchen table, where he used to write his lyrics, now sits in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. In 2009, it was bought by three Springsteen fans determined to preserve the house for musical posterity but, two years ago, they put it up for sale once more for just under $300,000.

At dawn, cars drive down the US 9 highway past Newark Liberty International Airport, Newark, New Jersey, US.

Though you might expect Springsteen’s lyrics to be heavy on the New Jersey specifics, he is in fact quite restrained in this department, favouring instead a more general sense of the state. Several of the references that do stand, however, are to roads: the New Jersey Turnpike, which appears in Living on the Edge of the World, Open all Night and State Trooper, and Route 88, which pops up in Spirit in the Night. US Route 9 has its moment of glory in Born to Run in the line “Sprung from cages on Highway 9 …” Should you care to drive it, Route 9 runs largely parallel to the Garden State Parkway, up through the suburbs of Atlantic City, and leaves the state via the George Washington Bridge.

Madam Marie

Madam Marie’s Psychic Adviser Asbury Park, New Jersey, USA

When he was in his late teens, from time to time Springsteen would visit a fortune teller named Madam Marie on the Asbury Park boardwalk – allegedly it was she who told him he was going to be famous. In fact, Madam Marie was the stage name of Marie Castello, and her small booth was nicknamed The Temple of Knowledge. Springsteen would often sit outside it and, in 1973, he referenced her in his song 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy): “Did you hear the cops finally busted Madame [sic] Marie for telling fortunes better than they do …” and she enjoyed widespread fame thereafter. Castello died in 2008 but her business continues on the boardwalk. 4th Avenue, green space on the Boardwalk

Maxwell’s, Hoboken

Maxwell’s Tavern, New Jersey. US

Maxwell’s is a musical institution in New Jersey but it played a part in the Springsteen story in 1985 when it was used as one of several New Jersey locations for his Glory Days video, directed by Hoboken resident John Sayles. A wistful look back to his younger years, the song’s opening verse recalls a chance meeting Springsteen had with his former Little League teammate, speedball pitcher Joe DePugh, at a bar in 1973, and the video’s baseball scenes were shot at Miller Stadium in West New York, New Jersey. 1039 Washington Street, maxwellsnj.com

The Student Prince, 911 Kingsley Street, Asbury Park

Bruce Springsteen and Clarence Clemons on stage during the Born to Run tour in 1975.

In the late summer of 1971, Springsteen would meet E Street saxophonist Clarence Clemons – later nicknamed The Big Man – here at this Asbury Park bar. Clemons was playing with Norman Seldin & the Joyful Noyze at the Wonder Bar down the street and after his show walked up to see Springsteen’s set. The story runs that there was a heavy storm that night and as Clemons opened the door to the club the wind was so strong it blew the door off its hinges. Clemons too was thunderstruck – albeit by Springsteen’s performance. “It was so urgent, so real, and so exciting to me,” he told Springsteen biographer Peter Ames Carlin. “It was like I’d been searching for so long and now, thank God, I am finally, finally, where I’m supposed to be.”

Meet the Springsteen Fans Who Created Tours That Bring the Star’s Legend to Life

Sean O'Neill, Skift

October 2nd, 2020 at 1:30 AM EDT

While celebrity tourism isn't new, these two guides have certainly carved out a unique niche in covering Springsteen's origins at the Jersey Shore. Small and genuine experiences like the tours they offer may outperform generic, mass-market offerings during the travel sector's recovery.

springsteen tour of new jersey

Jean Mikle and Stan Goldstein met at the office copy machine while working in 1988 at the same newspaper, the Asbury Park Press. The two reporter colleagues bonded over being fans of Bruce Springsteen. They began offering tours about Springsteen and the Jersey Shore’s rock history about a decade later.

Goldstein (who has seen Springsteen perform 400 times) and Mikle (who has seen “only about 200 shows”) hope that the artist’s new album, which drops October 23, will help revive their sideline business.

This year’s pandemic prompted travelers to cancel all but a few tours since February. That was despite the guides observing precautions, such as wearing masks and keeping the windows down when doing a driving tour.

The idea for the tours was born to run when Mikle and Goldstein went with another friend to see Springsteen and the E Street Band in London in 1999. While in London, they took a Beatles history tour. One stop was the famous Abbey Road crossing, a photo of which became the iconic cover of the Beatles’ album.

Goldstein and Mikle realized they could use their reportorial skills to create a comparable tour with a Springsteen theme. They marketed their first walking tour, which focused on Asbury Park, Belmar, and Freehold, to an online fan community. When about 60 fans showed up in July 1999, they knew they were onto something. They’ve given tours every year since.

“It’s a town full of losers and I’m pulling out of here to win,” sang Bruce Springsteen in the song Thunder Road.

But it turns out many people will travel far to see the locales that shaped the Boss. About 80 percent of the tours have been for people from outside the New Jersey and New York City area, Goldstein said. The demand for the tours peaked a few years ago when Springsteen had a show on Broadway. Many visitors hopped trains from Manhattan to Jersey Shore train stations, where Goldstein picked them up.

Many of the people who have taken the tours are international visitors. For a fan from Australia or South Africa, New Jersey can feel like a pilgrimage worth making, given the landmarks referenced in albums.

Exhibit A: Last year’s movie Blinded by the Light highlighted, near the end, a British teen’s visit to Springsteen’s old haunts. The movie was inspired by the story of Sarfraz Manzoor, a superfan. Coincidentally, Manzoor took a tour with Goldstein in 2005.

“At one point during the tour, Manzoor was shaking,” Goldstein said. “It was when I showed him the house Springsteen lived in when he was in high school in Freehold.”

Mikle likes to weave in stories of Asbury Park into the tours. The area had a rich heritage of musical performance and innovation, including Asbury Park’s African American community .

“Bruce didn’t originate out of thin air,” Mikle said. “He was heavily influenced by music from the west side of Asbury Park, for example, and he opened for some of those bands.”

The tours hit other stops, including Belmar, where fans like to take their picture at the sign for E Street and 10th Avenue — a block from the house where E Street band’s keyboardist David Sancious lived in the 1970s. Other stops often include Freehold, which helped to inspire the song “My Hometown.”

Sometimes the tour guides bring along special guests, like when original E Street Band drummer Vini Lopez has joined several tours.

Prices vary by the offering. For a two-hour driving tour, they charge $150 per tour for up to four people. Group walking tours are usually $15 to $20 a person.

Obviously the tours have always been a sideline for the pair of friends. Mikle continues to report for the Asbury Park Press, and Goldstein now works for Kates-Boylston Publications. They’ve written a book, Rock & Roll Tour of the Jersey Shore .

Why the devotion to Springsteen, anyway? Mikle’s appreciation had taken time to develop, she said. Mikle had liked Springsteen’s music fine enough as a teenager. But things changed after a friend persuaded her in 1978 to see a couple of concerts.

“The concerts almost felt life-changing,” Mikle said. “The albums were great, but to actually see him in concert and hear how the songs changed when performed live was almost epic.”

Goldstein said Springsteen is “the best live rock and roll show maybe ever and one of the best lyricists.” But there’s another important factor.

“He made it cool to be from New Jersey,” Goldstein said.

You may remember, even before the Taylor Swift ticket fiasco, Springsteen fans expressed outrage over the price of tickets for the tour and Ticketmaster's "dynamic pricing" system.

Bruce Springsteen Treated New Jersey to the Best Setlist of the Tour

The Boss deviated from the tour's standard setlist and subbed in seven surprise songs

Bruce Springsteen Treated New Jersey to the Best Setlist of the Tour

As of late, Bruce Springsteen has received some criticism from fans for sticking to a rigid setlist during the E Street Band’s ongoing world tour. No one who attended The Boss’ hometown show in E. Rutherford, NJ on Sunday left complaining though; Springsteen deviated from the tour’s traditional setlist by subbing in seven fan favorites .

Over the course of 28-song performance, Springsteen and E Street Band treated fans to renditions of “Two Hearts,” Something in the Night,” “Spirit in the Night,” “Atlantic City,” “Jungleland,” “Detroit Medley,” and “Jersey Girl.”

All told, it made for easily the best setlist of the tour. The second half of the show was particularly epic, as the band finished the main set with “The Rising,” “Badlands,” and “Thunder Road,” and followed that up with a seven-song encore featuring “Jungleland,” “Born to Run,” “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” “Detroit Medley,” “Dancing in the Dark,” “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out,” and “Jersey Girl.” See the full setlist and watch fan-captured concert footage below.

After Springsteen was briefly sidelined due to illness last week, the 73-old-old musician looks to be back in fine form. The E Street Band’s latest leg of North American tour dates runs through December. You can find tickets here, and read our recap of the band’s recent gig in Chicago here .

Bruce Springsteen shreds on guitar.

In the penultimate episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” Bruce Springsteen comes down with COVID after meeting Larry David.

As a result, his “Bruce Springsteen” character had to put his “farewell tour” on hold and the audience was led to believe “he may never sing again.”

Thankfully, the 74-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer is COVID-free and midway through an arena tour , that, as far as we know, is not his last.

Based on our findings, Springsteen and his E Street Band have 21 concerts lined up all over North America from now up until November this year.

Along the way, they’ll stop into Albany’s MVP Arena on Monday, April 15 and Syracuse’s JMA Wireless Dome on Thursday, April 18.

They’ll also headline the 2024 Sea.Hear.Now Festival in Asbury Park, NJ on Sunday, Sept. 15 along with Noah Kahan , The Gaslight Anthem , Trey Anastasio Band , and more.

For fans who want to catch The Boss live this year, tickets are available for all upcoming gigs.

At the time of publication, we found seats for select shows going for as low as $53 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Other concerts had tickets starting anywhere from $57 to $484 before fees.

Curious how much it will run you to see a healthy Bruce play the hits with Little Stevie, Max Weinberg, and Jake Clemons live this year?

We’ve got everything you need to know and more about Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s 2024 tour below.

All prices listed above are subject to fluctuation.

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues, and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found here:

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are in US dollars, subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Sea.Hear.Now Festival 2024

For the first time since December 2010, Springsteen is performing in his hometown Asbury Park.

The Sea.Hear.Now Festival , taking place Sept. 14-15, will mark The Boss’ headline homecoming.

He’ll be joined by notable acts Norah Jones , Black Crowes , 311 , The Revivalists and Kool and the Gang at the genre-hopping extravaganza in addition to the big names listed earlier.

Bruce Springsteen concert review

On Friday, Sept. 1, 2023, the New York Post saw Springsteen in concert at East Rutherford, NJ’s MetLife Stadium.

“Each song bled into the next with Bruce’s signature “1, 2, 3, 4!” cry giving the crowd a full-on musical thrill ride that never ran out of gas and was simultaneously heavy, silly and soaring sometimes all within the span of one song,” the publication reported.

If you want to read more about the lively show, you can read the NY Post’s glowing review here .

Bruce Springsteen recovery

Shortly after Springsteen’s three-concert stint at MetLife last year, he postponed the rest of his tour due to a peptic ulcer disease.

“Bruce Springsteen has continued to recover steadily from peptic ulcer disease over the past few weeks and will continue treatment through the rest of the year on doctor’s advice,” the group shared on  Instagram last September.

In his first show back at Phoenix’s Footprint Center, Springsteen addressed the postponement.

“Phoenix, first I want to apologize if there was any discomfort because we had to move the show last time,” Springsteen said to the crowd. “I hope we didn’t inconvenience you too much.”

To read more about the return — where he was mocked for resembling Tilda Swinton after tearing his shirt open — check out the New York Post’s story here .

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Get Loose in Los Angeles

By Ethan Millman

Ethan Millman

Three hours into Bruce Springsteen ‘s epic return to Los Angeles on Thursday night with the E Street Band, he stared down the sold-out crowd at the Forum. “Do you have anything left?” he shouted, midway through “Twist and Shout,” the second-to-last song of his first L.A. show in eight years. Five decades in, the magic of a Springsteen show remains: He always seems to have a little bit left in the tank.

The 2024 version of the tour has been looser than last year’s, which stuck fairly close to a single set list, and Thursday was no exception. Springsteen kicked off with a true rarity, a cover of John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Boom” (most frequently played on the Tunnel of Love Express Tour back in 1988), before jumping into “Lonesome Day” (rarely played last year, but now a staple in the set) and “Prove It All Night,” then his live -favorite arena-rock reworking of Jimmy Cliff’s “Trapped.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Six dates into their return to the road, Springsteen and the E Street Band sounded like they had never been interrupted. “Are you having fun yet? Because we haven’t had fun yet,” Springsteen told the crowd just over an hour into his show. “This is our pre-fun. We’re here to wake you up, shake you up, and take you to higher ground. The E Street Band is here to bring the joyous power of rock & roll into your life. But we need your help. We plan on sending you home with your feet hurting, your hands hurting, your ass in paralysis, and your sexual organs stimulated.”

Springsteen maintains a remarkably simple setup and show presentation compared to the other blockbuster live shows currently on the road. The visuals are limited to video screens and elegant stage lights, keeping the focus on the 17 musicians onstage with him. He doesn’t really need much else.

Bruce Springsteen Jokes About His Postponed Tour on 'Curb Your Enthusiasm'

Don omar cements his legacy with 'back to reggaeton' show in l.a., bruce springsteen joins zach bryan onstage at triumphant brooklyn show, trump says he’ll become ‘modern day nelson mandela’ over right to attack judge’s daughter, the far right is crawling with eclipse conspiracy theories, taylor swift starts countdown to ‘the tortured poets department’ with her favorite number, taylor swift soundtracks the five stages of grief with new apple music playlists.

From there, the show was all joy and catharsis, with an unbroken string of hits and live favorites, beginning with Nils Lofgren’s jaw-dropping guitar virtuosity on “Because the Night,” and inevitably reaching “Thunder Road” and “Born to Run.” As he has throughout the tour, Springsteen finished the show alone with his meditation on life after death, “I’ll See You in My Dreams.”

Springsteen and the E Street Band will play another Forum show on Sunday.

Review: Bruce Springsteen ups his game for incredible Easter Sunday show

B ruce Springsteen put on a magnificent show on Thursday night at Chase Center in San Francisco . Then he went out and topped that effort by delivering an even better concert at the same venue on Easter Sunday.

“Happy Easter,” the 74-year-old New Jersey native greeted the full house of fans. “It’s a religious crowd here tonight, I can tell — spiritual crowd.”

For his part, Springsteen went about his work with the enthusiasm of a revival tent preacher, strutting about the stage with passion and purpose and delivering each batch of words like they might be the ones that will change the very lives of those listening.

And the 16,500 followers in attendance ate it up — every single word — during all 29 songs of the approximately three-hour set.

Unlike Thursday’s show, which got off to a somewhat tepid start, Springsteen and his incredible 17-piece E Street Band came racing out of the gate with a fiery “Light of Day.” That relative rarity — which was being played for the first time on this 2024 tour — was actually first recorded by Springsteen in 1983 as part of the “Born in the U.S.A.” sessions, but never ended up making it onto that or any other of his studio albums. “Light of Day” would actually first surface in a performance by Michael J. Fox and Joan Jett, playing as the fictitious band the Barbusters in the 1987 film of the same name.

  • Music | Review: Bruce Springsteen delivers incredible evening of music for fans

There were a lot of other differences between the two sold-out Chase Center shows, both of which consisted of 29 songs. Most significantly, the setlists varied in satisfying fashion, giving fans plenty of reasons to attend both.

On Thursday, fans got “Something in the Night,” “Two Hearts,” “No Surrender,” “Atlantic City,” “Death to My Hometown,” “Racing in the Street” and “Bobby Jean.” Those songs were absent on Sunday, replaced with “Light of Day,” “Night,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “Darlington County,” “My City of Ruins,” “Glory Days” and a deliriously fun and unexpected cover of the Top Notes classic “Twist and Shout” (which most people know from the hit Isley Brothers and Beatles versions, the latter of which was introduced to an all new generation through “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”).

The concert was a juggernaut early on, as The Boss and company continued through the “Rising” anthem “Lonesome Day” (which has nicely settled into the No. 2 spot on this tour setlist) and the “Born to Run” cut “Night.” Setting a likely unintended theme, Springsteen went on to include four more night-titles in the show — with the others being “Prove It All Night,” “Spirit in the Night,” the Commodores cover “Nightshift” (featured on his 2022 covers album, “Only the Strong Survive”) and, of course, the powerful Patti Smith co-write “Because the Night.”

He’d draw from 10 studio albums — as well as the 1992 live effort “In Concert/MTV Plugged” — with the lion’s share of the setlist going to the legendary 1975 outing “Born to Run.” He pulled a half-dozen tracks from that career-maker, including two — “Born to Run” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” — during the eight-song encore.

No matter how many times you experience it, “Born to Run” — performed with the house lights up — is an adrenaline rush that never fails to satisfy. It remains Springsteen’s greatest rock song, with “Thunder Road” being a somewhat distant second.

Yet, what will stick with many fans is the surprise that came at the end of the first encore.

The Boss has been closing this segment with “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” on this tour — and, for good reason, since it’s a fun rocker that puts a real exclamation point on the E Street Band portion of the show. Then Springsteen remains onstage and plays a soft solo acoustic version of “I’ll See You in My Dreams” as the real finale.

But as the last notes of “Tenth Avenue” were still ringing through Chase Center, Springsteen decided to rev up one more — “by request,” he said — and led the E Streeters in a glorious old-school run through “Twist and Shout.” It was one of those special moments where Springsteen — who has been one of the biggest artists in rock ‘n’ roll now for some 40 years — channeled his Jersey bar band roots in such brilliant fashion.

A wave of pure joy washed over the 16,500 fans — some of whom were likely old enough to remember when the Beatles performed “Twist and Shout” on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in 1964 — illustrating once again why so many people consider Springsteen and the E Street Band to be the greatest live act in rock history.

Just 48 hours after a show in San Diego and less than 24 hours before he is set to perform at San Francisco’s Chase Center, Bruce Springsteen logged some serious (private) air miles for a surprise performance at country superstar Zach Bryan ‘s concert at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Wednesday night.

Singer-songwriter Maggie Rogers , who is featured on Bryan’s “Dawns,” performed that song with the headliner earlier in the evening and joined him for the encores with Springsteen.

While the concert presumably wasn’t the only reason Springsteen flew cross-country, his history has shown he’ll pick up a guitar and join a friend onstage whenever he has time.

Earlier this month, Bryan broke an attendance record in Springsteen’s home state of New Jersey at the Prudential Center in Newark on March 15. Bryan’s “Quittin Time” tour marked the highest attendance ever for a single show in the Newark arena’s 16-plus year history with 19,151 guests in attendance.

Springsteen and the E Street Band’s 2024 tour consists partially of dates he’d rescheduled from last year after suffering a peptic ulcer. The dates in the U.S. are in two groups: a month-long swing taking place in mid-March through mid-April, followed by a second month’s worth of shows in mid-August through mid-September, with European shows coming in-between.

Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa have been living in the "Glory Days" for some time.

The pair met in the 1980s at The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, New Jersey, where both regularly performed. "It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship," she later told New Jersey Monthly . "We had a beer together, sat at a table, and talked."

That talking led to Scialfa ultimately joining Springsteen's E Street Band — and eventually, marriage and a family .

Here, look back on some iconic throwback photos of Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa, both on and off the stage.

Larry David had to flee an angry mob of Bruce Springsteen fans in last Sunday’s episode of HBO’s “ Curb Your Enthusiasm .”

Let’s rewind.

In this, the final season of the show, one plot line has been that Larry is headed for his day in court.

Why? Because he violated a law in Atlanta when he offered water to someone waiting in line to vote.

The incident, which temporarily landed Larry in jail, also made him something of a hero to some.

Bruce, seemingly impressed by Larry’s actions, meets with the “Seinfeld” co-creator in the latest episode of the show, the penultimate of the 12th and final season, which aired March 31.

“I told myself ‘I wanna meet Larry David, this guy is a hero of mine,’” Bruce tells Larry (he made a brief appearance talking about Larry on a TV screen earlier this season).

But in true “Curb” fashion, the meeting, held at the home of Larry’s manager Jeff Greene ( Jeff Garlin ) and his wife Susie Greene ( Susie Essman ), takes some detours and causes more than a few unintended consequences.

At first Larry talks with Bruce and Jeff about his distress over witnessing a local restaurant owner (at an establishment where he recently ate) change the place’s designated health grade from C to A.

“He should’ve said B,” Bruce says. “If he said B, it’s not that far from A.”

“Springsteen eats at a B, I’m shocked,” Jeff says.

Larry also shares that he is peeved about having to read an acquaintance’s manuscript. Bruce can relate — he says he was once asked by a fellow musician — Don Henley — to listen to a demo of a band he liked. Bruce started listening and gave up after two seconds.

“And now I’m self-conscious if I get a phone call from him or I see him somewhere,” he says of Henley.

Then Bruce’s rep interjects to deliver some good news. The Boss’ own final ride — a farewell tour — has just sold out.

That rep ( Ian Harvie ) also shares that he used to have a romantic relationship with Larry. Since that time, he has transitioned as a transgender man.

“I used to be Kendra,” he tells Larry. “Now I’m Ken.”

Ken recalls their past encounters, sharing intimate details about Larry and where he liked to have sex.

“I didn’t make you out for a floor f---er,” Bruce memorably tells Larry.

In the middle of all this, Bruce and Larry have a mixup over whose water glass is whose at the table. Larry insists one of the glasses is his, and Bruce disagrees.

Later, Larry tests positive for COVID-19. Bruce, who also tests positive, has to cancel the final show of his farewell tour in Los Angeles.

Bruce tweets that Larry gave him COVID. Larry, of course, goes on the defensive.

“Maybe he gave me COVID,” he tells his new lawyer, who warns him that all of this doesn’t look good for his upcoming trial.

Later, because of a potentially destructive misunderstanding earlier in the episode, Larry sneaks into the yard of Bruce’s home with a masseuse ( Tania Gunadi ) who wants to take a photo with the Boss.

The ailing Bruce is taken aback at seeing Larry outside his window.

Ken approaches Larry and shoos them both off the property and into the crowd of fans that has gathered in front of Bruce’s home.

Because of Bruce’s tweet, the mob pursues their car, enraged that Larry (allegedly) gave him COVID.

Of course, Springsteen, 74, had tour cancellations and postponements in real life last year due to peptic ulcer disease .

Springsteen, band back live in concert, says he 'couldn't sing at all' due to peptic ulcer disease

ABCNews logo

NEW YORK -- Bruce Springsteen is speaking out after relaunching his tour with the E Street Band following a six-month break to deal with a diagnosis of peptic ulcer disease.

"The Boss" revealed that during the worst stages of his condition, he wasn't able to sing at all.

Calling into Sirius XM's E Street Radio on March 21, Springsteen said, "You sing with your diaphragm. You know, my diaphragm was hurting so badly that when I went to make the effort to sing, it was killing me, so I literally couldn't sing at all, you know? And that lasted for two, three months, along with just a myriad of other painful problems."

"It took a while for the doctors to say, 'Oh, no, you're gonna be OK,'" he said. "At first, nobody was quite saying that, which made me nervous, y'know?"

Now that Springsteen is back in good shape, he said he and the band consider their return to the stage a "whole new tour."

"There'll be a much wider song selection going on," he said. "Some of the second half of the set is built so solid, so a lot of it'll stay. The opening ... I'm not sure what's going to happen up top, but it'll shift around. I'm waiting to see myself where the show is going to take me."

"But ... for us, it's a new tour, a new day, and we're approaching everything like that," he continued. "We're looking forward to having a lot of fun."

The band currently has dates scheduled through November.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, "a peptic ulcer, or stomach or duodenal ulcer, is a sore on the lining of your stomach or duodenum."

Acid from the stomach can cause sores or other types of injury or damage to the esophagus, stomach or small intestine.

"The most common causes of peptic ulcers are Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) [ such as aspirin, ibuprofen or naproxen ] ," the NIDDK states, adding the "common symptoms of peptic ulcers include pain or discomfort in your abdomen, feeling full too soon during or too full after a meal, nausea, bloating, and belching."

Doctors may recommend proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers or other medicines to treat the condition and help ulcers heal.

"If your peptic ulcers aren't caused by H. pylori infection or NSAIDs, doctors will check for uncommon causes," the agency states. "Depending on the cause, doctors may recommend additional treatments."
