Independently Speaking: Huckleberry Found--Inside the St. Regis Travel Center (Slideshow)
If youâre passing through St. Regis, Mont., itâs hard to not stop. If the billboards advertising huckleberry milkshakes arenât enough to make you pull in, the look of the place just might. The St. Regis Travel Centerâs fun signage promoting its gift shop, restaurant, casino and aquarium are enough to make passersby hit their brakes and go inside.
In 1962, Jack Lincoln purchased an old gift shop and the surrounding property in St. Regis. He added a diner and truckstop with a service station. In 1984, he combined all of the businesses under one roof. When Lincoln passed away in 2001, he left the business to his three children. His daughter, Maureen Bullock, known by most as âMuffy,â bought out her brothers in the first year. Together with her husband, Gary, Muffy runs the St. Regis Travel Center, and they constant tweak the business to attract summer travelers coming and going from nearby vacation destinations.
The Gift of Variety
The Bullocks have taken on a remodeling project about every five years, starting with the restrooms. âIt was probably the best move we made,â Gary says, âbecause we found out quickly how important that was for customers.â
Next they took on the gift shop, expanding it significantly in 2004. Today, St. Regis has 6,000 square feet of gifts from 300 different vendors, 53 of them from Montana. âAnything huckleberry is popular,â Muffy says of the Montana-grown wild berry. âWe have pottery made from a woman from Superior, a couple of T-shirt lines out of Missoula, local jewelry, etc.â
The gift shop also has a live trout aquarium thatâs been around for 50 years. Originally the aquarium had a live seal pit. Thatâs gone now, but the remodeled structure includes a place where kids can play. Thereâs also a big talking bull moose nearby that makes kids laugh. The moose, Huck, tells jokes and explains where you can get a milkshake and a burger.
Adjacent to the gift shop is an ice-cream and espresso shop called Dolly Vâs. It stands for Dolly Varden. âIf youâre a fisherman,â Gary says, âyouâll know what that means.â (Itâs a kind of trout.) And thankfully, many of the travelers who stop by do. Dolly Vâs signature item is huckleberry milkshakes, and the travel center sells about 10,000 annually.
Grill Marks
Until 2010, St. Regis also had a family-style restaurant with an extensive menu for breakfast, lunch and dinner. âWe felt maybe that concept was becoming dated and we wanted to update our look as well,â Gary says. âWe also donât have a large labor pool around here. To find a cook who could do a full menu was pretty challenging.â
So they simplified the menu, paring it down to what they call âupscale fast food.â Now the restaurant, Huckâs Grill, offers a smaller breakfast menu and hand-pressed Angus beef burgers, along with sandwiches and chicken strips, for lunch. Noon to 3 p.m. is the busiest part of the day. âWe try to cater to the traveling family,â Muffy says.
After the remodel, they tried doing counter-service ordering, but customers preferred to be waited on. So they switched back to table service and added a to-go window. Now 40% of restaurant sales are to go. The gift-shop expansion reduced restaurant space and the staffing requirements, but sales volume is back up to what it was before the change.
âWeâre pretty tickled with how thatâs worked out,â Gary says.
A Good Gamble
The old convenience store had a strange, narrow layout, which the Bullocks have updated. They made it look more modern and upscale, adding wood flooring and a black gondola. The store offers classic c-store items from classic c-store vendors, but some atypical selections offer an opportunity for improved margins.
âPeople know how much a typical candy bar goes for, but if itâs something theyâre not familiar with, you can charge whatever you want,â Gary says.
The c-store also offers deli sandwiches, salads and desserts made fresh in the restaurant kitchen. Sixteen Conoco-branded fueling stations are just outside the c-store doors.
In the middle of the building is a small casino with 14 machines, flat-screen TVs and packaged liquor, a good profit center for St. Regis. âWe get a lot of tourists who didnât know you could do video gambling in Montana,â Gary says. âTheyâll drop $2 or $3 in there. The casino just quietly does well for us.â
Itâs called Cutthroat Henryâs Casino, branded with a cartoon fish. The Bullocks came up with all the names for each department of their travel center. A local graphic designer has brought their outdoor-character theme to life.
Whatâs Next
Looking ahead, the Bullocks have more improvement projects planned for the travel center. The womenâs restroom was expanded this year to shorten lines; theyâre looking to do the same with the menâs restroom soon. They also want to solve congestion problems caused by campers in their parking lot and improve the efficiency of the to-go window at Huckâs.
âGary also looks for new menu items every year,â Muffy says. âWe focus on fewer items but make sure theyâre all tasty and high-quality. We know we need to add healthy vegetarian and gluten-free items. Weâre watching those trends.â
The site employs about 60 people in the summer season but far fewer during the rest of the year. âIt gets pretty sleepy around here in February,â Muffy says.
The Bullocks know the key to their success is teaching their employees to focus on customer service.
âCustomers really demand that now,â Muffy says. Complimentary bags of popcorn and friendly smiles make a big impression on customers. âWe do our best to give them a little more than they expect.â

GREAT gift shop!
When I'm on a road trip, I'm not looking for places to hike, bike, hang-glide, ski, etc. I want to browse in gift shops!! (Tell me I'm not alone.) We found this gem in the tiny town of St. Regis. They have a huge gift shop! I must have been in there for an hour. So many cute, unique things. And they have a trout aquarium and popcorn machine with free popcorn to keep the kids and husband happy.
The travel center has so many cute clothes, furnishings, and souvenirs that there is something for everyone. They also have a host of tasty treats like the ice cream and milkshakes. Staff are friendly and helpful.
This a great place to buy that last minute sovenir from Montana before going into Idaho. Great ice cream cones and a good place to stock up on ice and gas before heading home on I-90.
So while on the main interstate through the beautiful state of Montana we came across a billboard on the side of the highway about "The best Huckleberry Milkshake" and on an impulse we stopped in St. Regis, Montana. Well the gift shop certainly did not disappoint! There was an abundance of cool merchandise for sale and even better they had a section where they served ice cream, coffee beverages and milkshakes. Well I had to try out the Huckleberry Milkshake and it was fantastic! Everything you would expect from a top notch milkshake! Also I need to mention that the staff were very helpful and friendly. The young woman (I apologize for not remembering her name) who took my order for the milkshake was very social and was very pleasant to interact with! She took my name for my order and gave me a very nice smile! Sadly we only stayed there for so long but my experience there was quite enjoyable! So if you're passing through this quaint hidden gem in the mountains of Montana, certainly drop by their gift shop!
On our annual visit to Flarhead Lake, we always stop at St. Regis to pick up something we can't do without. They remodeled the store in April 2019 and moved the ice cream shop closer to the entrance. It has quadrupled its sales and one of the most popular treats is the Huckleberry shakes. We had tried two places in Polson, MT earlier in the week and thought they were pretty good. But wow! The best Huckleberry shakes are definitely made at the St. Regis Travel Center. You've got to try one!
The advertisement said âBest Sake Everâ and we agree. Stopped two time coming and going for a huckleberry milk shake. Their claim is not at all extravagant, indeed, it was the best huckleberry shake ever!
