Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1, Episode 20, 'Supernova, Part 2,' Recap & Spoilers

Star Trek: Prodigy wraps its first season with a fiery finale full of heroism and sacrifice. Here is a spoiler-filled recap of the Paramount+ series.

The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1, Episode 20, "Supernova, Part 2," now streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Prodigy headed into its season finale with the entire fate of Starfleet having in the balance as the insidious construct implanted on the USS Protostar has turned Starfleet’s entire armada against itself. With Dal and his friends scrambling to find a way to stop the destruction, saving the day may come at too great a cost. However, the young Protostar crew has always been able to think quick on their feet, and they are the only ones positioned to put this chaotic rampage to a halt.

Though Dal contemplates destroying the Protostar to stop the continuing destruction of the Starfleet armada amidst the doomed starships , Jankom Pog points out that the sheer potential of the Proto Drive risks devastating an enormous swath of the galaxy. Rok and Zero calculate how destruction of the Proto Drive can be diluted by traveling at top speed to mitigate the explosive carnage left in its wake. Hologram Janeway volunteers to remain behind to ensure the plan is successful as the USS Protostar abandons the battered armada -- secretly unable to replicate her programming to live on beyond the ship’s destruction.

Hologram Janeway manages to destroy the Protostar without causing widespread destruction, as per Rok and Zero’s predictions. Attempting to retrieve a duplicate of Janeway while a safe distance away in a shuttlecraft, the Protostar crew is shocked to watch a recorded message from the hologram instead. Hologram Janeway informs her friends why she was unable to save herself while encouraging them to continue to be bold and live up to Starfleet’s ideals. She bids them a final farewell.

Back at Starfleet Command in San Francisco, Vice Admiral Janeway is briefed on what exactly occurred before discovering a new distress call from her old friend Chakotay. Janeways is surprised to learn that the message comes from 52 years into the future! Chakotay and his crew are stranded ahead in the timeline after their ship was seized by the Diviner and Asencia’s forces. Janeway is able to pinpoint when and where Chakotay is, but the matter is tabled when the Protostar ’s shuttlecraft arrives on Earth outside of Starfleet Academy.

As Dal and his crew face a Starfleet tribunal for commandeering the Protostar and the devastation caused by the rogue starship, Janeway steps up to serve as their defense counsel at the hearing. Janeway especially defends Dal, pointing out that despite the illegal genetic experimentation that created him , he represents the best and brightest of Starfleet’s ideals. Janeway’s spirited argument leads Starfleet Command to drop all charges against the makeshift crew, with most of the group assigned to serve as Starfleet cadets under Janeway’s supervision -- but not all of them.

Starfleet decides to send Gwyn back to her home planet in an effort to prevent the disaster her civilization causes decades into the future, with Gwyn reluctantly agreeing to the edict. Gwyn and Dal privately share a kiss before they promise to see each other again. As Gwyn departs for her planet, Janeway shows the cadets a new Protostar-class starship improving upon the original design. She leads her bright-eyed proteges boldly into a future where no one has gone before.

Created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, Star Trek: Prodigy Season 1 is now streaming on Paramount+ The first half of the season will be released on home video Jan. 3.

‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ episode 20: ‘Supernova, Part 2’ review

The first season of Star Trek: Prodigy comes to a conclusion.

Michael Rosch

Starfleet ships keep showing up like lambs to the slaughter, The Protostar is destroyed, and one major member of its crew ends their voyage for good by going down with the ship. Our heroes’ lives are forever changed by a season finale of Star Trek: Prodigy that puts it all on the table and goes out with a bang.

“Supernova, Part 2” was my kind of finale, one that confidently resolves its larger plot early and then spends the rest of the episode on the emotional stakes while taking time to set up the next season. One of my few criticisms of last week’s Part 1 was that I didn’t buy the assumption that Starfleet vessels would just keep showing up one after another and getting forever ensnared in the living construct’s trap. The Federation isn’t The Borg; they’re not mindless automatons following an already-established program.

Fortunately, this episode blew past that concern quickly as the Protostar crew decided the simplest solution involved destroying their ship and the living construct with it. Of course, it wasn’t that simple. Blowing up the Proto Core would do untold damage on the sector. This damage could be greatly mitigated if they Proto Warp at the exact moment they destabilize the Core. The catch is someone will have to stay behind.

Holo Janeway convinces them she’s the best option since they can copy her entire memory onto an Isolinear chip. But when Holo Janeway realizes her time with the current crew has evolved her program to be too large to fit on the chip, she lies and sends them on their way. It’s only after it’s too late that they discover the chip only carries a prerecorded message from Holo Janeway explaining the situation and expressing her pride and confidence in them.

A month later, a new Chakotay distress call — from inside a wormhole created by the Protostar’s exploded core and from an alternate future — provides Admiral Janeway with her next mission. The surviving Protostar crew is discovered and brought to Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco to face trial for their crimes. Admiral Janeway advocates for them with a speech worthy of even Jean Luc Picard. Not only are all charges dropped, but five of the six are to be taken under Janeway’s wing as Warrant Officers in Training. They were denied Academy entry due to the waitlist already filled with applicants from actual Federation member worlds.

Even Dal is allowed to participate, despite the Federation’s centuries-long ban on augmented individuals thanks to Janeway’s inspiring words. The Federation is made up of 150 member worlds; Dal shares the DNA of 26 of them. “Is there a better living embodiment of what our alliance represents?” Janeway asks the tribunal.

Gwyn is the one left out of this arrangement, as Starfleet has agreed to help her back to her home world, where she intends to follow her father’s dying wish to unite her people. In a beautifully written, intimate scene that ends with Dal and Gwyn exchanging a passionate kiss, we’re reminded that first contact between The Federation and the Vau N’Akat hasn’t happened yet and that, in this timeline, Gwyn’s father is still alive.

Gwyn departs just before our young heroes are introduced to the new Protostar Class ship modeled on the prototype. But possibly subverting audience expectations, when Dal asks if this will be the ship Dal, Zero, Rok-Tahk, Jankom, and Murf will serve on next season, Janeway responds, “I have much bigger plans for us!”

“Supernova, Part 2” resolves many of the central questions of season one of Star Trek: Prodigy , while leaving plenty to explore  in season two. For one, Jameela Jamil’s Vindicator doesn’t appear at all this week after escaping the Protostar’s Bridge in Part 1. She’s almost certainly going to be a significant obstacle to Gwyn’s mission as “The Unifier.” Meanwhile, the search for Chakotay is the obvious primary agenda for Admiral Janeway for season two.

“Supernova, Part 2” is an immensely satisfying finale that doesn’t bother to waste time dragging out the high-jeopardy, epic action. I’m thrilled the writers front-loaded the biggest action and suspense in Part 1 and trusted the audience enough here to center the characters’ personal and emotional journeys. I suspect even most of the show’s youngest viewers knew Starfleet was going to make it out of this conflict intact.

I kinda wish shows more geared toward adult audiences would take a page from Star Trek: Prodigy ‘s writers and embrace a more chill finale that takes the time to just clear the board and set the pieces up again for the next round. season two promises to not just repeat the formula of season one but to boldly move the story forward in new and exciting directions.

Together At the End - Star Trek: Prodigy

As the living construct continues to infect the Federation ships and cause them to turn on each other, Dal realizes the only option is to destroy the Protostar.

Jankom points out that destroying the protostar core would destroy everything and everyone around them for fifty million miles.

Rok suggests they detonate the core just as they protojump, spreading the energy release across space-time.

Hologram Janeway recommends replicating an escape pod and ejecting before the detonation. Dal points out that with the auto controls fried, someone will have to stay behind to detonate it manually.

Dal offers to do it as captain and since he can’t enter Starfleet Academy as an Augment. Hologram Janeway points out she can do it too. This way there’s no loss of life since her program can be duplicated and stored on an isolinear chip.

They fly the Protostar out of the field of ships firing on each other. They get the ship ready to jump and detonate.

On the bridge, Hologram Janeway discovers her program has grown too big to save onto a chip. But when Dal checks in with her, she gives him a chip and doesn’t let on that anything is wrong.

They bid farewell to the ship. Hologram Janeway tells them serving alongside them was an honor, and they leave. Left alone, she sighs.

The crew’s shuttle exits the shuttle bay. Hologram Janeway brings the core online and gives the order to, “Go fast.”

From the shuttle, the crew watch as the Protostar goes supernova as it jumps, leaving a streak of light and energy in its wake.

In the battlefield, the ships stop firing on each other. Vice Admiral Janeway orders a search for the crew of the Protostar.

On the shuttle craft, they realize the plan worked. Dal inserts the chip Hologram Janeway gave him. A video recording plays. She explains her program couldn’t be duplicated and saved. The crew mourn her sacrifice.

One month later, Starfleet is debriefing at headquarters on what they’ve learned about the Protostar’s detonation. At the point of impact, it created an interspatial rift, a wormhole. Through the rift, one of the stations picked up a message from Chakotay sent from 52 years in the future.

Hologram Janeway’s last action was to duplicate the parameters of the Protostar’s first time jump, giving approximate coordinates for how to find and rescue Chakotay.

An officer rushes in and informs Janeway the Protostar crew has been found.

Janeway defends the crew to the Starfleet tribunal.

The crew waits outside for the verdict. Janeway comes out to tell them that all charges have been dropped. Regarding Starfleet Academy entrance, they will not be granted fast-tracked admission as that wouldn’t be fair to other applicants. However, Janeway has convinced them that five of the crew will be her warrant officers in training under her personal command.

The crew member who won’t be joining them is Gwyn. She plans to find Solum before the Federation makes first contact to try to prevent their self-destruction.

The crew undergoes examination and assessment by Starfleet. Rok is offered a chance to pursue studies in xenobiology. Jankom shows off his engineering skills. Zero gets a new containment suit.

Dal and Gwyn sit together, looking at a model of the universe and talking about their time together. Gwyn tells Dal she knows where Solum is, where her homeworld is. Dal realizes The Diviner is still out there.

Dal tells Gwyn he doesn’t want her to leave. Gwyn understands and kisses him. She promises they’ll see each other again.

The others watch Gwyn’s ship take off. Suddenly a hanger near them opens up and reveals a new Protostar-class ship. Janeway joins them. She tells them she has bigger plans for them. They follow her towards the buildings. Dal turns to look back as Gwyn’s ship disappears into the sky.

Star Trek: Prodigy's Brett Gray Prepared For His Role By Keeping Himself In The Dark

The second season of "Star Trek: Prodigy" is still awaiting a release date in North America, although French readers should be able to view it right now on the region-specific France.TV. The story of the cancelation of "Prodigy" is sad for Trekkies, as the kid-centric animated series, created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, was just growing into its own and emerging as a proper "Star Trek" series.

The premise was fun: in an unknown and distant part of the galaxy, a group of teenage aliens -- fleeing slavery in a mine -- discover an abandoned Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Protostar. On board, they meet a holographic version of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), who assumes the teens are Starfleet cadets and require tutelage. The teens are hotheaded, feisty, and brooding in the way that teens tend to be, but Janeway teaches them to operate as a crew and mature as individuals. By the end of the first season, the teens were wearing uniforms and staging dangerous rescue missions.

The ersatz captain of the crew was Dal R'El, played by actor Brett Gray. Dal didn't have a family and didn't even know what species he was. He initially took command out of bluster and unearned confidence but eventually learned to get along with his crew and even came to care for them as friends. Scant exposure to Starfleet ideals was enough to inspire ambition and growth.

It seems that Gray, when preparing for "Prodigy," deliberately didn't do any "Star Trek" research. Gray was not a Trekkie by any stretch and had no working knowledge of the franchise. However, since Dal was also clueless about the details of Starfleet, Gray felt it was fitting to keep his homework to an absolute minimum. Gray admitted as much in a 2022 interview with TrekMovie.

Barely Preparing

Of course, Trekkies would likely prefer to hear from actors that they are as learned in "Star Trek" as most diehard fans. "Star Trek" is a vast and complicated universe and I think many Trekkies would be comforted to know that the actors they watch every week are just as sensitive to continuity as they are. Not so with Gray. When asked about how much "Star Trek" knowledge he entered "Prodigy" with, Gray was frank, saying:

"You're not going like this answer. I tried to barely prepare it all. I was really nervous coming into it. I thought maybe I should watch every 'Star Trek' and I should go learn about everything; see who the people are and things like that. But as I was reading the scripts for the first season, I realized that I could discover this all as myself with Dal. I don't know if that was the right way to do it but I feel like it's freed me up so much."

To be fair, ignorance would actually aid Gray in creating a character like Dal. If the character had never heard of Starfleet, then it would stand to reason that the actor shouldn't have either. Dal and Gray could, then, go on parallel growth arcs, learning about "Star Trek" through snippets of knowledge, all while offering their own eye-rolling, irreverent viewpoint. Dal didn't find Starfleet sacred, allowing Gray, as he said, to do more with his character. Indeed, when it came to a known element of "Star Trek" narration, Gray said that his ignorance impressed the producers.

'I Don't Even Know What A Captain's Log Is'

Gray went on to relate a story about his unique read of the classic "Star Trek" exposition device -- the captain's log:

"I remember my first captain's log -- I don't know if you've heard any of them, but they're getting better -- but when I first started them it was super flippant and the producers loved it. They said, 'Wow, these are usually done very matter-of-factly and super seriously, did you choose to do that?' And I was like, 'I don't even know what a captain's log is!' I think in some ways, it's freed me up to bring some freshness and to bring some life into these characters in a different way than we've seen before."

Indeed, "Prodigy" is one of the most in-depth examples of an outsider character learning about Starfleet for the first time. Gray reinforced that he and Dal were learning at the same time.

In June 2023, it was announced that "Star Trek: Prodigy" had been canceled and that the show would be removed from Paramount+. This came as an utter shock to the "Prodigy" cast and crew . They were given leeway to finish the second season, but there was to be no more "Prodigy" after that. Currently, "Prodigy" is available on Netflix. The sudden removal of "Prodigy" was the first sign that Paramount had invested too much in "Star Trek" and that the franchise needed to contract . "Picard" is over, "Prodigy" and "Discovery" have been canceled, and "Section 31" was transformed from a series into a movie.

Those of us outside of France will have to wait and see if Dal truly grows up.

Interview: Sonequa Martin-Green On Facing Her Past On ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ And Her Hopes For The Future

It’s amazing how many LGBT people are on Star Trek now. Love it.

Yeah, but unfortunately, the cover is missing the very first one: Jadzia Dax.

The cover is “missing” a character that doesn’t seem to be appearing in the comic? I don’t think it’s a problem NOT to falsely advertise her appearance. I’m hopeful they’ll do more of these in the future and include her.

Great art all around! Looking forward to it.

I know I shouldn’t be objectifying shirtless cartoon Sulu, but holy.

Yeah, they made him look ripped.

George looked like that in the original ep ‘naked time’

One can appreciate without objectification. We know he’s a upstanding officer and husband, he can be fit as well ;)

Happy birthday to O G ‘hikaru sulu’

So excited for this I preordered the regular cover and the variant with Mariner and Jennifer ! I hope they do this again next year. I love the DC Pride collection that comes out every year and the Star Wars Pride covers… Love to see Trek continue to expand this kind of anthology and include more characters as well (like Jadzia Dax.)

Screen Rant

Star trek: discovery season 5 episode 4 ending explained.

Moll and L'ak send Burnham, Rayner and Stamets hurtling through their past, present, and future as Star Trek: Discovery's treasure hunt continues.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery, season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange".

  • Captain Burnham and Commander Rayner navigate through time to stop the time bug, showcasing their growth and teamwork.
  • A Voyager connection reveals the menacing Krenim "time bug" and its catastrophic effects on the USS Discovery's crew and timeline.
  • Burnham reflects on her journey as she faces challenges from her past while navigating through alternate futures in "Face the Strange."

Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) find themselves hurtling through the USS Discovery's past, present, and future in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange". Written by Sean Cochran and directed by Lee Rose, "Face the Strange" demonstrates how far Burnham and Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) have come since Discovery season 1 . It's also a chance for Burnham and her new Number One, Rayner, to finally work as a team, as they literally race against time to get Discovery 's hunt for the Progenitors' treasure back on track.

"Face the Strange" reveals that Moll (Eve Harlow) planted a Krenim " time bug " on Ensign Adira Tal (Blu del Barrio) at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 3 . Having worked its way into the USS Discovery's systems, the time bug traps the crew in their own history, randomly cycling the ship through the past, present, and future, freeing Moll and L'ak to retrieve the next clue . Burnham, Rayner, and Stamets are unaffected and work together to get the USS Discovery back to the 32nd century in time to stop Moll and L'ak from completing the next step in Discovery 's treasure hunt.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Returning Cast & New Character Guide

How burnham, rayner & stamets beat star trek: discovery's time bug explained.

The time bug in Star Trek: Discovery is a particularly nasty piece of temporal technology, which proves hard for Burnham, Rayner, and Stamets to beat. Their first attempt to nullify the device fails, because time inside the surrounding field is moving at a rapid pace. Anything that enters the field to remove the time bug will cease to exist within seconds , forcing Stamets to come up with a far riskier strategy.

the warp bubble is what protects the crews of Star Trek 's starships from the effects of relativity...

The trick to beating the time bug is to reduce the flow of time in the surrounding field , but to do that, the USS Discovery has to break the warp bubble and throw relativity out of sync. As they travel faster than the speed of light, the warp bubble is what protects the crews of Star Trek 's starships from the effects of relativity . Abruptly breaking the warp bubble means that the time bug has less time to readjust to relative time outside the USS Discovery. This would weaken the surrounding field for long enough for Rayner to remove the time bug.

The main issue with Commander Paul Stamets ' plan was that the time-traveling trio were in the worst possible time period when it comes to Burnham's standing aboard the USS Discovery. The time bug's final cycle took Burnham, Rayner and Stamets to an early point in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, when Michael was still seen as a dangerous mutineer. For Stamets' plan to succeed, Burnham had to make her way to the bridge, fight and incapacitate her younger self, then successfully convinced the bridge crew to follow the orders of their future captain .

A line of dialog places these scenes at some point between episodes 3 and 4 of Star Trek: Discovery season 1, as Commander Landry is said to still be alive.

Star Trek: Discovery's Time Bug Is A Voyager Connection

Commander Rayner reveals that the time bug is a " Krenim chronophage " left over from Star Trek 's Temporal Wars . The Krenim are a technologically advanced species first introduced in Star Trek: Voyager 's season 4 two-parter, "Year of Hell." The USS Voyager's first encounter with the Krenim went so badly wrong that it created an alternate timeline that descimated the majority of the ship's crew .

This forced Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) to make the ultimate sacrifice to restore history. Hailing from the Delta Quadrant, the Krenim had devastating temporal weapons that were capable of removing entire species from existence. While Star Trek: Discovery 's time bug is much smaller, it can still have a devastating impact on its victims , as shown by what will happen if Moll and L'ak get their hands on the Progenitors' technology.

Voyager Is Why Star Trek Is Replacing Discovery’s Spore Drive

Burnham and stamets’ time travel shows how much they've changed on star trek: discovery.

Burnham and Stamets are forced to relive some painful moments from their pasts, but these incidents remind viewers just how far the Star Trek: Discovery characters have come. Stamets hilariously draws on his angrier, snarkier past self from Discovery season 1, which helps him swiftly empty engineering. It's a fun callback to the person that Stamets used to be, before his tardigrade DNA made him more mellow, making him a better husband to Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) and a father figure to Adira. However, Stamets' tartigrade DNA has one drawback; he still experiences the pain of being impaled during the Battle of Control .

Burnham also gets a welcome reminder of how far she's come, courtesy of the Krenim time bug and some words of encouragement from Rayner. Rayner reminds her that she never gave up on her path from prisoner to starship captain , and so she shouldn't give up when faced with their bleak alternate future. Captain Burnham stirring the crew of the USS Discovery on the same day that her younger self came aboard as a prisoner is a strong affirmation of her journey between Star Trek: Discovery seasons 1 and 5.

Burnham's awkwardness around Book seems more rooted in her suppressing her attraction than trying not to change the future

Burnham also gets a chance to reflect on her relationship with Booker (David Ajala), when she meets his past self, fresh out of the shower. Burnham's awkwardness around Book seems more rooted in her suppressing her attraction than trying not to change the future. It's another hint that Burnham and Book's Star Trek: Discovery love story isn't over yet.

Star Trek: Discovery Finally Solves Its Biggest Short Trek Mystery

In the fan-favorite Short Trek , a soldier, Craft (Aldis Hodge) was picked up by the USS Discovery after his escape pod had drifted through space for a month. Craft formed a bond with Zora (Annabelle Wallis) who had been left behind by the USS Discovery a thousand years earlier. For years, fans speculated over where "Calypso" fitted into the Star Trek: Discovery timeline, something that the showrunners promised would come further down the line. Now, Discovery season 5, episode 5 "Face the Strange" provides the answer. "Calypso" takes place in an alternate version of the 42nd century, a thousand years after the Progenitors' technology had fallen into the wrong hands .

Star Trek Needs To Bring Back Short Treks

Burnham and Rayner's jump into the future reveals that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Breen got hold of the Progenitors' technology and used it to destroy Starfleet and the Federation. As the USS Discovery hangs in space, Burnham and Rayner look out at a devastated Federation Headquarters, as Zora pleads with them to change the future. The use of a calypso version of Doris Day's "Que Sera Sera" is Star Trek: Discovery 's subtle confirmation that it's this catastrophe that left Zora abandoned for a thousand years before Star Trek: Short Treks .

Did Star Trek: Discovery Retcon Airiam’s Season 2 Sacrifice?

While convincing the crew of the USS Discovery to help with her plan to return to the 32nd century, Captain Burnham reveals that Lt. Commander Airiam (Hannah Cheeseman) will sacrifice her life to save her crew mates. Airiam accepts Burnham's future knowledge, because she knows that she would sacrifice her life in those circumstances. Airiam's knowledge of her own future is what eventually convinces her to follow Burnham's orders by breaking the warp bubble . In normal circumstances, knowledge given to her by a time-traveling Burnham would mean that Airiam will sacrifice her life in Star Trek: Discovery season 2 because she knows she has to.

However, due to the nature of the Krenim time bug, and Stamets' solution, Burnham telling Airiam about her tragic future doesn't retcon Star Trek: Discovery season 2. By removing the time bug before the next loop, Burnham, Rayner and Stamets negate everything that they did, meaning that, for example, young Burnham won't remember her fight with her future self. This means that Airiam will still make the decision to sacrifice her life in Discovery season 2, independently, not because she was inspired to do so by Captain Burnham .

Rayner Is Finally “Connecting” With USS Discovery's Crew

Callum Keith Rennie's Commander Rayner continues to go from strength to strength in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. Following Burnham's orders to " connect " with the Discovery crew in the previous episode, Rayner demonstrates how much he was paying attention during his brisk one-on-one meetings. Not only does Rayner give Burnham the encouragement she needs not to give up, he and Stamets appear to bond over being " old dogs " who specialize in " gruff candor ".

Why I'm On Rayner's Side In Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Rayner's most notable connection is with Gen Rhys, whose theory about Moll and L'ak he brusquely dismisses at the start of the episode . Thrown back into time when Rhys was just a lieutenant, Rayner gets through to the young officer by bonding with him over a love of Constitution-class starships. Rayner's connection with Rhys is enough to convince the officer to lower his phaser and let him and Stamets proceed with their plan. Back in the 32nd century, Rayner finally acknowledges the value of Rhys' tactical assessment that Moll and L'ak would just follow Discovery to the next clue .

Rayner also tells Rhys that he's lost his family, teasing more about the new Star Trek: Discovery character's backstory.

Where Have Moll And L’ak Gone In Star Trek: Discovery Season 5, Episode 5?

The Krenim time bug caused the USS Discovery crew to lose six hours to Moll and L'ak in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4 . Returned to Tzenkethi space in the 32nd century, Lt. Commander Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) picks up Moll and L'ak's trail, but it quickly stops dead , meaning that they've seemingly disappeared. A starship trail that drops dead just before an episode called "Mirrors" would certainly play into Star Trek: Discovery season 5's Mirror Universe theory . Perhaps the reason that Moll and L'ak's trail stops dead is because they've phased into another reality altogether.

It's possible that Moll and L'ak picked up more than a Romulan puzzle box...

Alternatively, given Star Trek: Discovery season 5's Romulan connection, their ship could have used an interphasic cloak, first seen in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "The Next Phase". Interphasic cloaking technology effectively turned Lt. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) and Ensign Ro Laren (Michelle Forbes) into ghosts, unable to be seen by their crewmates. It's possible, therefore, that Moll and L'ak picked up more than a Romulan puzzle box in Star Trek: Discovery 's season 5 premiere, meaning that they could have a considerable tactical advantage over Burnham and the crew in the next stage of the treasure hunt.
