Vans Warped Tour 99 : Green Day, Asbury Park Lot, Asbury Park (US) - Jul 18, 1999
Warped Tour farewell: Why Asbury Park and Warped were very good for each other
After the summer, the Warped Tour as we know it will be no more.
Founder Kevin Lyman announced in November that 2018 will be the last “full cross-country run” of the famed punk rock tour.
“Though the tour and the world have changed since ‘95, the same feeling of having the ‘best summer ever’ will live on through the bands, the production teams and the fans that come through at every stop,” said Lyman said on vanswarpedtour.com.

Since 1995, when No Doubt, Sublime, the Deftones and more set up camp in Asbury Park during the Warped Tour’s inaugural run, the festival has had a distinctly Jersey feel over the decades. Warped help boost the careers of older Jersey punks like the Bouncing Souls, and it gave a stage to up-and-coming Jersey bands like Thursday and My Chemical Romance.
The ‘95 Warped stop in Asbury Park, it turns out, was pivotal for the survival of the tour, according to Lyman. The reaction to the initial run of shows was less than stellar, but the Asbury Park show on Aug. 18 changed that.
“People didn’t know what to make of the Warped Tour then,” said Lyman to the Asbury Park Press in 2015. “It was new to them and it was different. It was a challenging summer for us. Our future was uncertain.”
Then, more than 3.200 kids showed up and rocked the asphalt on Second Avenue at the Stone Pony, where the Warped was staged.
Asbury Park was good for the Warped Tour.
“The reaction we received in Asbury Park gave us optimism,” Lyman said. “The first really positive reaction we received was in Asbury Park and that lifted our spirits. The people there really embraced what we presented. Maybe we shouldn’t have been surprised since the whole New Jersey area is such a hotbed for music and they were so excited in Asbury Park over this thing called the Warped Tour back then. When we played there, we thought, ‘Maybe we can do this for a few years.’ "
Concerts East promoters Tony Pallagrosi and Jerry Bakal staged the Warped Tour in Asbury Park that year, and would do so for 16 more years in the city, at Raceway Park in Old Bridge and Monmouth Park in Oceanport. The guys had been producing punk and hardcore shows in the city a few years before the Warped Tour came to Asbury Park. The Warped Tour’s big crowds suggested an untapped potential for a city on the skids.
The Warped Tour was good for Asbury Park.

“In the summer, you would look on beach and there wouldn’t be a soul on the beach, but there would be thousands of people at these events,” Pallagrosi said. “It made people believe that somehow, someway, people would come back to Asbury Park.”
More than 17,000 attended the last Asbury Park Warped Tour in 2003. It had outgrown the city and was staged at Raceway Park the next year.
“It made people consider possibility that people would come back to Asbury Park,” Pallagrosi said.
The Jersey Shore edition of the Warped Tour was subsequently staged at Monmouth Park in Oceanport and the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel. None of the venues matched the frontier thrill of Asbury Park in the ‘90s.
Coming up, the Warped Tour returns to the PNC Bank Arts Center on Saturday, July 14. There are also shows Friday, July 13, at the BB&T Pavilion in Camden, and Saturday July 28, at Jones Beach on Long Island.
Many of the bands who got their start on the tour are part of the final run. Taking Back Sunday, Sum 41, the Used, Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, Underoath, All Time Low, Frank Turner, Bowling For Soup, Silverstein, Everytime I Die, The Maine, Mayday Parade, Knuckle Puck, The Amity Affliction, and Motionless In White and more are included in the lineup.
There are plans underway for a Warped Tour 25th anniversary event in 2019.
“I look forward to what’s to come as we commemorate the tour’s historic 25th anniversary in 2019,” Lyman said.
It’s certainly a different world now as compared to 1995, especially in Asbury Park, where revival and development are the key words now.
“I’ll never forget having to bribe guys for the use of their parking lots,” Lyman said. “I remember the half-finished buildings dotting the Asbury Park landscape but it’s all different there now. It’s beautiful.”
