Fishing Kayak Review: Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS

Buyer’s Guide | Kayak Angler

T he Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is a sit-on-top fishing kayak popular with anglers who want to get on the water without the price tag attached to many of today’s more elaborate fishing kayaks. The low cost and ease of use of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 help this beginner-friendly fishing kayak make sport fishing accessible to everyone.

Sun Dolphin is a Michigan-based kayak brand manufactured in the United States. It is the largest kayak manufacturer in the world by production volume. Sun Dolphin kayaks are so widely available across North America, you’d be hard pressed to find a big-box department store, hardware store or outdoor chain that doesn’t carry these boats. From Walmart to Tractor Supply Company, the availability and attractively low price of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS are two major reasons for the widespread popularity of this fishing kayak.

Sit-on-top kayaks like the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS are the most common style of fishing kayaks. A traditional sit-inside kayak has a hollow hull and a cockpit opening in which the paddler sits, legs extended under the deck. A sit-on-top design has more of a flat deck, on which there is a fixed seat or molded seating area. With a sit-on-top, the paddler is not enclosed within the kayak, but rather sits on top of the open deck enjoying more freedom of movement and access to gear, but less protection from the elements or waves.

Wear A Life Jacket

  • Everyone, even strong swimmers, needs to wear a life jacket at all times when on the water. It is extremely difficult to put a life jacket on once you fall into the water. Even a light wind can blow any paddlecraft away from you, faster than you can swim.
  • Always wear a USCG-approved Level 70 or Type III life jacket designed for paddling.

Anglers value the open deck of a sit-on-top since it provides more accessible storage and mounting options for rods, tackle, fishing crates and other accessories. A sit-on-top kayak also allows anglers mobility on their craft. They can reach gear, cast, throw a leg over the side and, on the most stable sit-on-top models, even stand. A sit-on-top like the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 ft fishing kayak is also easier to climb on and off compared to sliding into a sit-inside kayak.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS fishing kayak’s user-friendly design, along with its low price point and widespread availability at major retailers across North America, have given this boat a large following within the angling community. Read on for a full Journey 12 SS review to learn more about this popular fishing kayak.

On the water with Sun Dolphin’s Journey 12

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 Specs Length: 12’0” / 3.64 m Width: 30.75” / 78 cm Weight: 48 lbs / 22 kg Capacity: 395 lbs / 179 kg MSRP: $499 USD / $667 CAD

Performance

One of the most valued characteristics of any fishing kayak is stability. After all, anglers need to be able to concentrate on landing fish without worrying that they’re the one who’s going to be released into the water. Some users of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 ft fishing kayak report a “tippy” feel to the boat.

Think of a kayak as having two types of stability: how it feels when sitting flat on the water (known as “initial stability”), and how the kayak feels when tilted side-to-side (known as “secondary stability”). Secondary stability is most important in rough water, allowing a kayak to rock with waves passing underneath rather than capsizing.

Kayaks with a wide, flat hull generally have good initial stability, but are less balanced when tilted on edge.

Kayak’s with a rounded or V-shaped hull and rounded transition from the bottom of the kayak to the sidewall generally have better secondary stability, but may feel tippy when sitting flat on calm water.

With its rounded hull profile, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 favors good secondary stability rather than rock-solid initial stability. At 30.75 inches wide, it’s also a bit narrow compared to other fishing kayaks in its class, which may explain why users initially feel the kayak is “tippy.”

The sensation of a kayak tending to tip toward a side feels odd at first. If you find the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS feels unstable, try relaxing your lower body and letting the kayak sit how it wants to in the water. After a few outings, if you still feel uncomfortable, you may want to try a fishing kayak with a wider and flatter hull.

What a narrower, sleeker kayak like the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS trades off in stability, it makes up for in speed. A basic rule for kayak speed is that longer and narrower hulls are faster than shorter or wider hulls. At 12 feet long and just over 30 inches wide, the Journey 12 SS is quicker than many recreational fishing kayaks in its class.

Market and demographics

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is an entry-level sit-on-top kayak and falls within the category of recreational fishing kayaks.

What makes the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 an entry-level kayak? The price point for one. The Journey 12 retails for $499 USD, this is at the very low end of the fishing kayak price scale. Sun Dolphin achieves this low price by keeping outfitting and features bare-bones, another reason this kayak rates as entry-level in a feature-hungry fishing market.

Recreational kayaks like the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 are best suited for paddling and fishing sheltered lakes and bays, as well as slow-moving rivers.

About the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS

Design features and details.

As mentioned earlier, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is a sit-on-top kayak. This means the seating area and gear storage areas are molded into the deck of the kayak. This is in contrast to a sit-inside kayak design, where you slide your lower body into the enclosed or partially-enclosed cockpit of the kayak. The sit-on-top design allows more freedom of movement, easier entry and exit and better access to gear, but less protection from the elements or splashing waves.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 has a pronounced V-shaped bow—like a sailboat or ship—that helps it cut through waves and deflect spray in choppy conditions. Combined with its high sides, this makes the Journey 12 a fairly dry ride on the sheltered waterways where it’s intended to be used.

A word of caution, however: Sun Dolphin doesn’t include scuppers on the Journey 12 SS. What’s a scupper, you ask? Scuppers are the drain holes commonly found under your legs and seat within the cockpit and tankwell of sit-on-top kayaks. Any water splashing into the kayak drains out through the holes. Some water can also enter through the holes. In calm conditions, water lapping up the scuppers can be unwanted. To avoid this, paddlers often use scupper plugs until water needs to be drained.

Without scuppers, the inevitable reality is that splashing waves, boat wakes, rain or paddle drips will enter the cockpit and have no means to escape. Because the seat is the lowest point within the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS, you can expect to find yourself sitting in a puddle.

A large kayak sponge is the easiest way to remove small amounts of water. But, should a large wave or hauling in a trophy lunker swamp the cockpit with water, a kayak bilge pump is useful to have handy. Fortunately, water in the boat is more of an inconvenience than a safety concern; unlike many sit-inside recreational kayaks, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 sit-on-top will remain floating and able to paddle even if swamped.

Carry A Waterproof VHF Radio, Use Your Phone Only As A Backup

  • A handheld VHF marine band radio allows you to communicate with the Coast Guard and other boat traffic. Use Channel 16 only for hailing and emergencies. The radio should be waterproof, because it is virtually certain to get wet.
  • A cell phone, even if in a waterproof case or sealable bag, might not work, so don’t rely on it as the primary means of emergency communication.

Material and construction

Sun Dolphin kayaks are built using high density polyethylene. This type of polyethylene, also referred to as HDPE, is a common material used in manufacturing recreational kayaks because it is an inexpensive yet durable plastic. HDPE is susceptible to damage from long-term UV exposure, so Sun Dolphin uses a UV-stabilized polyethylene that slows the degradation process. It’s also recommended that you store your Journey 12 fishing kayak indoors or away from direct sunlight to ensure the best performance over time.

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS fishing kayak accessories and outfitting

Remember, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is an inexpensive kayak stripped of many bells and whistles to keep the price down. However, from bow to stern, the Sun Dolphin manages to squeeze in a number of useful, angler-specific outfitting features and accessories.

Near the bow of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 ft fishing kayak is a forward tankwell for storage. This tankwell is recessed into the deck of the kayak, and has bungee cord rigging over it to secure your gear. A small, screw-top hatch in the tankwell accesses below-deck storage for stashing items you don’t need to keep as handy. Do not assume this hatch is watertight. Any items that need to stay dry should be in a dry bag.

An appreciated outfitting feature within the cockpit are the adjustable foot braces. These sliding foot braces provide the ability to fine tune your leg position, with a greater range of adjustability than simple molded-in foot rests. Foot braces are critical to providing good support for efficient paddle strokes and paddler comfort.

The seat of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 is basic and bare-bones compared to the luxurious frame seats available on more expensive fishing kayaks. Some users complain that the thin seat pad and simple backband on the Journey 12 bucket seat do not provide adequate cushioning or support.

Another common remark is that the low positioning of the seat limits paddler reach, making it awkward for shorter paddlers to take comfortable strokes. Keep in mind that seat outfitting is generally easily modified with a few pieces of closed-cell foam and adhesive. This may be all you need to improve comfort and fit.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 includes three rod holders. Two rod holders are flush-mounted into the kayak directly behind the cockpit. The third is a swiveling rod holder installed toward the front of the cockpit, between the paddler’s knees.

Most Journey owners find the forward rod holder is far enough forward it won’t cause an issue with paddle strokes. The swiveling capability can be useful to troll a line on a reverse drift along an undercut bank, or to have a rod ready for action at the first sight of tailing redfish.

Next to the cockpit is a bungee paddle holder. This is useful to stow your paddle while fishing.

The most unique feature on the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is the removable storage pod that fits snugly in the kayak’s rear tankwell. The pod, which Sun Dolphin refers to as the P.A.C. (Portable Accessory Carrier), provides dry storage and can be easily removed if you prefer to use the open tankwell. You can even tow the P.A.C. behind the kayak if you need extra storage space.

The triangular shape of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS front and rear tankwells accommodate smaller bags and boxes but do not fit the much-loved milk crates so many kayak anglers have come to adopt for ease of organization and transportation of tackle.

Besides the bungee paddle park, P.A.C., stern drain plug and forward rod holder, there aren’t many other Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS parts to consider. The lack of scupper holes means scupper plugs are not in any way needed.

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS mods

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 provides a simple, bare-bones platform that kayak anglers can modify to suit their needs and preferences. Paddlers of the Journey 12 often upgrade the seat, install accessory mounts and even trolling motors.

Sun Dolphin itself doesn’t offer much in the way of custom accessories, so any modifications are the work of paddler innovation. Fortunately, the popularity of the Journey 12 means there is a large community of anglers using this kayak and documenting their DIY modifications on YouTube and elsewhere.

A seat upgrade is one of the most common user improvements. Anglers may opt to simply replace the thin seat with thicker foam, or install an elevated folding frame seat. Premium fishing kayaks often feature an elevated, lawnchair-style frame seat for enhanced comfort and a better view into the water. Some DIY modifiers create an elevated seat in the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 by installing a thick piece of foam paired with a folding seat, such as the Cascade Mountain Tech stadium seat or the GCI Sit Backer canoe seat . Keep in mind that the higher position of a frame seat may be more comfortable, but also reduces stability. Test any DIY mods out on calm waters near shore before paddling off to more remote fishing holes.

Know The Local Hazards

  • Check navigation charts before you launch.
  • Check with those who have local knowledge of man-made and natural hazards, e.g. low-head dams; sweepers, strainers and undercuts; tides and currents; and rocks and shoals.

Another simple Sun Dolphin Journey 12 modification anglers can make is the addition of accessory tracks, such as these low profile tracks from Scotty . Accessory tracks screwed to the deck provide a place to mount removable rod holders as well as add electronics such as a fish finder, GPS or action camera. Kayak anglers can purchase mounts for different uses through brands like Scotty and RAM.

How it compares

Within the Sun Dolphin fishing kayak lineup, the Journey 12 SS is their mid-range sit-on-top. The Journey 10 is a shorter kayak with a similar design, while the Boss 12 SS is Sun Dolphin’s premium fishing kayak with a catamaran-style, stand-up fishing capable hull and higher end features like a frame seat. Sun Dolphin also produces two sit-inside fishing kayaks, the basic Excursion 10 and the larger, more deluxe Excursion 12 SS.

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 vs 12

If you are deciding between the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS and Journey 10 SS , the main differences between these two popular sit-on-top fishing kayaks are dimensions and capacity. These differences result in some subtle, and some not-so-subtle, changes to performance and who is going to enjoy these boats.

At 9’6”, the Journey 10 is over two feet shorter than the 12-foot Journey 12. A general rule for kayaks is the longer the kayak, the faster it will be. This means the Journey 10 is significantly slower with less glide than the Journey 12.

The dimensions of a kayak are also factor into its volume, which affects its buoyancy and weight capacity. The Journey 10 has a maximum capacity of 250 pounds, compared to the Journey 12’s capacity of 395 pounds. This 145-pound difference could be an important consideration for larger paddlers.

So if the Journey 10 is slower and can carry less weight, is there any reason paddlers should choose it? For one, storage and transport. The Journey 10’s shorter length makes the kayak easier to balance and swing around when carrying. Not to mention a sub-10-foot kayak can even fit in some vans, SUVs and apartments.

Length is also an important factor in the waterways you paddle. A longer kayak is harder to turn, a shorter kayak quicker to maneuver. If you are paddling tight waterways, the Journey 10 will provide more maneuverability.

For most kayak anglers the Journey 12 provides a more versatile craft, but the Journey 10 is a sound option for skinny-water anglers and smaller paddlers.

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 vs Boss 12

In comparison to the Boss 12 , the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 is lighter, more maneuverable and lower cost. The Journey 12 is geared to the kayak angler seeking a basic kayak to enter the sport at a low cost.

The Boss 12 SS has a wide, super-stable catamaran-style hull and a flat open area on the deck providing a standing platform for casting. The Boss 12 SS also features an elevated frame seat, larger tankwells that can fit fishing crates, twice as many rod holders as the Journey 12 and more options for mounting accessories. On the other hand, the Boss 12 SS also weighs 78 pounds, nearly twice as much as the Journey 12.

All around, the Boss 12 is a more comprehensive fishing kayak. If you want a stand-up capable fishing kayak, the Boss 12 SS is the obvious choice. Go with the Journey 12 SS if you want a lightweight, portable kayak that’s just as fun for recreational paddling as it is for fishing.

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 vs Perception Pescador 12

The market for comparable fishing kayaks to the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 is huge, and while shopping for a fishing kayak in this class it’s always a good idea to weigh your options. Another popular, well-reviewed fishing kayak worth checking out is the Perception Pescador 12 .

Like the Journey 12, the Pescador 12 is a 12-foot sit-on-top fishing kayak. Compared to the Journey, the Pescador has a wider, flatter hull that feels reassuringly stable in both waves and on flatwater. Other features that make the Pescador a good choice are a rear tankwell large enough to fit a fishing crate and scupper holes that keep the Pescador cockpit dry and comfortable.

The Pescador 12 is modestly more expensive at $800 USD compared to $500 USD for the Journey 12. But with a proven track record, strong user reviews and more fishing-ready features, the Perception Pescador 12 is a great choice if you can afford the upgrade. Read a full Perception Pescador 12 review here.

Where to buy

The popularity of Sun Dolphin kayaks is due in no small part to their widespread availability at most major North American retailers. You can check Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS Walmart availability as well as Tractor Supply. Other retailers who carry Sun Dolphin products include Dick’s Sporting Goods, Canadian Tire and online at Amazon.

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS Fishing Kayak Review

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS Sit On Top Kayak is a slightly larger version of the Journey 10 SS fishing kayak. In addition to being a slightly longer fishing kayak at 12 ‘, the Journey 12 SS also loses a half-centimeter width by 29 1/2 “compared to 30’ ‘ by the 10 SS kayak. It’s only 4 lbs heavier at 48 lbs, but increases capacity from 250 lbs to 395 lbs. Thus, if you are looking for extra capacity and extra legroom, then Journey 12 SS is definitely worth the upgrade compared to the 10 SS kayak.

Apart from weight and size, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is practically identical to the 10 SS, with the same pros and cons. Because it is a little longer, it provides better tracking, but stability is still an issue. It is a decent kayak for beginners who want to fish in lakes or ponds and could even cope with calm rivers.

For comfort, the Journey 12 SS has adjustable leg straps, thigh pads, and a padded seat that provides decent back support. The chair is obviously not the most comfortable on the market, so some adjustments may be needed if you plan to spend hours fishing. This particular fishing kayak has a decent amount of front and rear storage space, and the portable accessory stand can be used for extra storage if you really need to bring extra equipment. The retractable carrying handles on this kayak are useful, but it’s a good thing that it’s not that heavy because there are no side-carrying handles.

As the Journey 12 SS is a fishing kayak, it has two mandatory rod mounts mounted on the back of the seat and swivel support for the front fishing rod. A convenient paddle stand takes care of your paddle while you operate the rods and using it requires only one hand, which is also nice. This particular kayak is by no means perfect and there are a lot of things about it that could have been improved, but it is still a good choice for first-time buyers on a tight budget. It will take you out on the water and fishing until you are ready to give extra money for an upgrade. We recommend you buy it online from amazon.com

Many kayaks that are available at low and intermediate prices are pretty much simple vessels, which lack the features that most modern fishermen want. They rarely provide enough storage space, are generally quite heavy for their size, and are usually designed for general use – the manufacturer will simply throw away a few “fishing” accessories to make it suitable for fishermen. However, Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS supports this trend and offers fishermen looking for an affordable kayak with a capable and ready-to-fish option.

  • Lots of storage space for equipment and gear
  • The seat backrest and adjustable straps allow you to customize your boat according to your body
  • Remarkable stability for its size and price
  • Easy and convenient kayak to transport to and from water
  • No skid plate is included to protect the hull from stones and gravel
  • The plastic can soften and deform at very high temperatures
  • No rudder or cloth is included to improve tracking ability

Build quality

Like most other Sun Dolphin models, the Journey 12 SS fishing kayak is made in the US from UV-stabilized high-density polypropylene. This ensures the desired durability in a kayak, without causing the ship to weigh more than necessary. However, a skid plate is missing, so you will be wise to launch and land carefully. Unfortunately, some fishermen reported that the ship’s walls would soften in warm weather, which allowed the rivets on the seat back to slide freely off the cabin walls.

Storage capacity

Journey 12 SS provides enough storage space to accommodate a reasonable amount of equipment and gear. Two recessed mounting rod supports are located at the rear of the cab, while a pivot-style support is positioned in front of the seat.

It has a fairly spacious loading area at the front of the boat, which includes bungee cords to keep your equipment safe. More so, like many of the best and well known Sun Dolphin kayaks, the Journey 12 SS comes with a Personal Accessory Carrier – a removable floating compartment that can be towed alongside the ship.

Like most other sit-on-top kayaks, the Journey 12 SS offers plenty of room for most anglers. Both the leg straps and the padded seat are also adjustable, allowing you to customize the craft to fit your body. Thigh pads are mounted on both sides of the seating area to protect your feet, and storage areas are all conveniently located.

Despite being only 29.5 inches wide, the Journey 12 SS is stable enough that you can throw and pick up or access the various storage compartments without any fear of tipping over. Very few fishermen have reported that they are confident enough to stand up while fishing, but brave souls may try to do so. This kayak has a listed capacity of  395 pounds, which will help keep even large fishermen afloat in the water.

Maneuverability

Most fishermen reported that Journey 12 SS did surprisingly well in the water. More so, it tracks better than most other fishing kayaks at this price range. Most kayakers found that it was easy to paddle in Journey 12 SS and that reasonable speeds could be reached. And because it weighs only 48 kilograms and comes equipped with retractable bow and stern transport handles, most fishermen found it easy to transport Journey 12 SS to and from the water.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is obviously not suitable for those who want state-of-the-art features such as pedal-operated or transducer-compatible sweeper systems, but it is a great choice for anglers looking for a functional and fishing-friendly vessel. It offers a very generous amount of storage space, including the patented Sun Dolphin accessory portable stand, which you can pull out and pull alongside the ship. It is light in size, so it is easy to launch and land and offers a surprising amount of stability for such an accessible and narrow kayak.

Answer: Yes, it comes with a thin seat cushion and adjustable backrest.

Question: Is this a two-piece hull or a mono hull?

Answer: one-piece mono hull

Question: Is it made in the USA?

Answer: Yes, it is made in the USA

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 – A Reliable Sit-On-Top Fishing Kayak?

From a company that has specialized in the manufacture of small lightweight water vessels, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 is a masterpiece worth reviewing. It is not majorly superior to others, and to an untrained eye, it is as casual as almost any other common fishing kayak.

To the trained eye, however, there is a little bit more to it than what is seen at first glance. For that reason, whether you are a fully skilled or trainee kayaker, you need to read through this Sun Dolphin Journey 12 review .

Framing Construction of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 is a 12-foot long, rigid, high-density polyethylene kayak specially formulated for this brand. The Fortiflex material gives the boat high UV resistant qualities. It also gifts the deck of the boat with anti-scratch and anti-crack qualities, which are crucial, especially when kayaking in rough waters.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12’s length, combined with its 29.5-inch width, augments its spear-like shape, enhancing the ability of the boat to cut through the water with very little challenge. This sit-on-top kayak’s height comes to about 14 inches, which will serve the user quite well in rough waters while avoiding unnecessary water splashes into the boat’s cockpit.

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS angler kayak

This fishing-tailored kayak is also considerably light due to its material and minimalistic rigging. At just 48 pounds, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 is quite an easy fit for all levels of kayakers to contemplate using. For color diversity, you will get the kayak in two colors, olive and sand. This makes it especially easy for the user to blend in if they’re fishing in murky water.

For its overall build outlook, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 maintains a simple deck streamline. It has an almost horizontal lining all through it from the aft to the stern. The aft and stern overhangs are also not overly done, which creates stability, even for an inexperienced pair of hands.

Check out our information analysis on the Sun Dolphin Bali 10 SS kayak here.

The deck curves into a well-planned cockpit area. Regrettably, the cockpit area does not embrace an extra lining of cushion, which can become a little uncomfortable, especially after a long period under the sun.

Features of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 Kayak

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS has a nice pair of tough thread nylon handles, fitted with a cushy rubber grip to prevent injury during tows and carrying. The pair of handles, contained on top of the fore and stern deck areas, are retractable.

This solo vessel is capable of accommodating up to 395 pounds , which is a very good standard for almost all sizes of kayakers. This also makes it suitable for long fishing expeditions. To top up the wide range usability feature, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 has simple, but comfy form seats.

The standard seat fits well within the wide cockpit to allow for easy maneuvering. However, there are a few people that may find the standard seats to be a little uncomfortable. Unfortunately, you’d have to buy seat pads at an extra cost, if you’re going on day trips.

Sun Dolphin Angling Kayak

Apart from the comfort offered by the open cockpit, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 also comes with thigh pads. These pads are a plus, especially for people who tend to suffer from muscle pulls due to having their legs in such a prone position for long periods.

Adjustable foot braces will keep your legs in place for whichever water conditions you want to experience. The braces have a significantly long tweak, making them capable of accommodating various ranges of leg lengths.

True lovers of fishing kayaks start with the storage space, then aim for the aesthetics. The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 is not at the top when it comes to storage space, but it has enough for an ordinary catch. There are two storage areas, the first being a dry storage compartment. Located on the fore deck of the Sun Dolphin Journey 12, it offers space to carry a few essential items for a good ride. A molded-in front bungee compartment works as an alternative spot for the storage of ‘easy-access’ items such as nets and bags.

deck space

As a fishing kayak, the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 has two flush-mounted fishing rod holders. These rod holders are strategically placed just behind the kayaker’s seat. This makes it convenient for the kayaker to adjust the fishing reels.

The center cockpit area features a nifty swivel fishing rod holder, which goes a long way in making the fishing experience more pleasurable. The positioning of the swivel rod holder is the single most innovative thing the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 carries.

  • The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 is light enough for one person to carry
  • Cheaper than most kayaks offering the same functionality
  • Easily stabilizes in rough weather
  • Ideal for beginners, as we’ve alread learned in this Sun Dolphin Journey 12 review
  • Addition of a P.A.C creates extra storage space
  • Blatant lack of hatches takes away from its ‘fishing capable’ feature
  • Material can be brittle, so no dragging it on the ground during storage and transportation
  • Seating is not suitable for all users, so extra pads might need to be purchased

Sun Dolphin Journey 12 Review Conclusion

There is on thing about Sun Dolphin models that never sits well with most buyers, and that is the material. Lightweight as they come, they always seem to suffer the problem of brittleness. However, that is a problem that is also reflected in a good number of polyethylene kayaks.

The Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS is still a good vessel to fish in, and one that a newbie can learn to kayak in. If you are graduating from total inexperience in kayaking to a beginner’s level, this boat is one that you should consider looking at.

Sun Dolphin 12 Sit On Top Kayak Review

sun dolphin journey 12 ss review

Today were going to do a review on my fishing kayak I've had thisfor almost a year its a Sun Dolphin Journey 12 foot sit on top kayak I bought it on amazon for 450. If you're into modding out a kayak you might want to just spend the extra $500 more to get a better kayak but for what it is I like this one. it's the perfect kayak for a beginner or someone that's somewhat new to fishing and for the budget there are few other options that can beat it.

Here are the best fishing kayak in the market this year.

So Why The Sun Dolphin 12  Sit On Top  Kayak?

They say it holds about 395 pounds and it's kind of a hybrid but it's not a sit on top since there's no scuppers but the sidewalls are pretty high and here you would stay pretty dry while you're inside so on a lake or pond fishing or maybe even light River you would be fine. I personally use it on a river and fish a lot on mountain lakes and on River areas. It comes with a little dry compartment for your phone or wallet I usually don't really use it since it's kind of hard to close it off.

There is a place to put your feet, Rod holders in the center of the kayak and a couple more Rod holders that are located behind the seats. These Rod holders can have extra PVC pipe in them for future mods.

I have commonly seen a lot of people buying this kayak to continue building on it and adding a lot of modifications.

It's got about a half-inch of a dry hatch near the front of the kayak. It simply twists off and gives you a little bit of space which is a solid compartment for storing different items you don't want to get dry like your cell phone or wallet. A lot of people add a mod to cut away to give access to the hull to add a fish finder or a compass.

There is an area for the center mount rod holder that comes with a Scotty type rod holder. The flush mount rod holders in the back are well builds in position. It's got some leg pads next to the sides. A good thing I like about the seat is that I have back problems and I really need back support and when you sit deep within the seat you can feel that the quality is good you can sit on it and the support for your back is very good. There are some cupholders in front of the seat where you could sit different things snacks or drinks.

There is another little container at the back for storage. It's flush mount so you could definitely put a crate on top of it if you want to but we don't see a need to do this unless you're packing out a lot of stuff it can already hold three fishing holes. The storage pulls right out to give you more space. It's not that thick so you can fit about a days worth of storage there if you wanted you could also probably tie something to the handle to allow for easy towing behind if you would like. The recess when you remove the dry storage is not big enough for a crate but you can definitely create some mods or put in a cooler bag or maybe a tackle bag or something improvised. For my purposes I'm only out on the lake for a couple of hours and I don't need to carry a huge amounts of storage so it's perfect for me. It's only got two handles which are slight drawback. It would be nice if it had some side handles. The drain plug is at the front and when you flip it over to the bottom of the hull looks well-made with a design that looks to help with tracking. The kayak is known as tracking very well.

One thing to keep in mind about this kayak is you cannot stand up some users have tried it in different areas and fallen out trying to stand up since it's very unstable . If you want a kayak for standing up you should definitely look for a different model that is created strictly for that purpose.

Features Of The  Sun Dolphin 12  Sit On Top  Kayak

sun dolphin 12 specifications

Pros and Cons of the Sun Dolphin 12  Sit On Top  Kayak

  • overall good product for the price range
  • tracks very well
  • decent amount of storage space
  • great and comfortable seat
  • very unstable for standing on top
  • lack of handles on the sides

Final Verdict

The sun dolphin journey 12 SS is a great kayak for anyone starting out with a smaller budget. This kayak might not be as well-made as some of the bigger brands like the stealth however for the price it's almost unbeatable and will definitely offer you a great fishing experience. We recommend this kayak for the beginner or the buyer on a budget it can also be used for the advanced user if you want to expand on the kayak and add a bunch of different mods to make it your own.

We purchased this kayak to replace and 8' Lifetime kayak that we had owned for 3 years. When examining it in the store we were impressed with the storage, adjustable footrests and the padded knee rests. Easily holds all the needed fishing gear.

My husband took it out first, and was not impressed with it at all. So, I decided I needed to take it out and give it a spin. After having the Lifetime, this one did not measure up, at all. First, when I sat on top of the kayak, I thought it was going to tip me into the water. Not good. Still determined, I took the paddle and went off with the rest of the group. I had a hard time keeping up as the kayak just would not track straight. Very uncomfortable with the stability. I knew right away, being in my 60's, that this was not the kayak for me. I finished out the day trip, then went home and sold it.

If I could give it negative…

If I could give it negative 5 stars I would. This is the worst tracking and by FAR THE LEAST STABLE yak I've ever been in and I won't even get into scupper and storage issues. Do yourself a favor and pay up for quality, you won't regret it.

I use this Kayak on a reservoir to fish for hours. Pretty stable and easy to paddle. I mounted three rod holders and 2 side mounted handles for convenience, (1 in the front and 2 in the rear). I made a small wheel cart to transport from car to water & return using old lawn mower wheels and a frame to a tub chair. I bungee cord the cart to the rear while I fish so I don't have to bring back and forth from the car. Rear compartment is adequate size for storing medical supplies and safety gear. I stuffed extra foam padding anywhere I could to maximize float-ability.

After 2 years of reading…

After 2 years of reading reviews and looking around for a good deal, I finally decided to pull the trigger. TSC had a great deal on this yak. $229+tax. It came with a paddle, removable rod holder, seat cusions, and the big storage compartment. I'm a newbie still, but this thing goes straight if you paddle deliberately. If you aren't paying attention, you can make it veer off course easily, which I would think is true of most kayaks. Imo, most negatives about tracking and tipping are user error. It was a little shaky at first, but once I found my center, I had no issues. 6' 187lbs. The adjustable foot rests are great. It took a few adjustments to get it where I wanted them. The seat back is adjustable as well. I can't say that I'd want to hook into a big fish on it, but I guess that would depend on your ability to stay balanced. Overall, from a rookie, a good kayak.

It is amazing and it is easy…

It is amazing and it is easy to mount a fish finder on and a good way to start a kid on. Im 15 and I use it all the time to fish local bass fishing tournaments in Arkansas.

I give this a 3 because it…

I give this a 3 because it is in the middle of the rating scheme. I got a Journey 10 SS for Christmas and have not actually had a chance to use it yet. That being said, Mine came with real nice scupper plugs and dual skegs, unlike what I have been reading about. My only complaint so far is length. It is advertised as a 10 ft kayak. Mine measures exactly 9 feet.

I bought this model kayak 2…

I bought this model kayak 2 years ago after I got my husband into kayaking and couldn't get him out of my Ascend. First 5 minutes on the water, I thought I'd hate it. But I had to get used to its difference in stability and tracking. Once I did, it was fine. I've used it a LOT! Great for the price! Haven't ever tipped. Have taken my dog out for rides in it, too. Couldn't find plugs to correctly fit the scupper holes, so I got a rubber seat cushion for about $6 that keeps my rear dry and also provides a little comfort.

Plug the scupper holes and…

Plug the scupper holes and you won't get wet. Put a skeg on it and it'll track like an arrow. A set of home made outriggers will make it stable enough to stand up and fish.

Rookie here, I read reviews…

Rookie here, I read reviews on this kayak before I bought it. I was on the fence. I had to find out for myself. I wanted to have fun, this kayak is unstable doesn't track very well. If you spend a little time in it you learn to control it and doesn't feel as tipsy. I made it work for me, but it took the fun out of the experience. It was too much work to have fun and I really never felt relaxed. I liked all the features it had. I never did feel confident enough to reach behind me. As far as getting wet, not a problem with that. I went in knowing that you get wet in a kayak. This is a lightweight easy to load and unload kayak . If you don't mind working for your fun this is the kayak for you. I know that it is a $300 kayak and one shouldn't expect perfection. There are better kayaks out there for $300. Pelican, Future Beach. Remember that they are $300 but not as much work for your fun.

I am very pleased with this…

I am very pleased with this kayak. For it's price point it's a great value. I've read a lot about tracking issues but have not experienced any my self. My kayak is new purchased 8/2019. My hull has 2 skegs as part of the mold, a padded seat bottom and only 2 scupper hols near the seat. It also included scupper plugs & I've never had a wet butt. When I look up this model online it shows 6 scuppers, no seat pad and everyone complains about finding the plugs??? Has Sundolphin updated this model? The paddle is not very good, but at least you get something included where as most other fishing kayaks include nothing. The storage is great and so far mine has proven to 100% dry but I'm not banking on that. If you're on the fence, go for it. It's an inexpensive way to get off shore. For what it's worth, I am 6'1" and weigh 200lbs.

We purchased three of these…

We purchased three of these Journey 10 SS sit-on 10' kayaks from Tractor Supply. We took them straight to the lake. Within 10 minutes my seat had an inch of water in it and I was soaked. My husband and son (who do weigh a little less) were only slightly wet in the seat area. My advice to you - if you will be using these in calm water - plug the scupper holes! I went to Field & Stream and bought a Pelican Trailblazer 100 NXT sit-in 10' kayak. I stayed perfectly dry! It doesnt have all of the fancy compartments or rod holders but I love my Pelican.

This has been fun and…

This has been fun and frustrating at the same time. Although tippy at first, i realized it had everything to do with my confidence on the water in a new kayak. Track was not perfect but ot is a10 footer. I found super plus at big five. I modified them with a pair of scissor s cutting off the second plug. Fit its now snug.. like a glove. I got mine for a great price and i don't worry about breaking on rocks, gravel or sand. Drilling and doing modification is not scary. It isn't an expensive water craft. Get over and get out there...live

So far, I love my new…

So far, I love my new baby!!! Took a little getting used to just cause I'm used to borrowing a "sit in" kayak. This is a sit on. But i can definitly fish from it. Now i just gotta name & chrissan her;)

Bought this kayak hoping to…

Bought this kayak hoping to get a decent angling sit on top kayak for a reasonable price. Well, I have bad news for you, these cheaper sit on top kayaks just aren't worth fooling with. This particular model, the Journey 10, is the tippiest boat I've ever been in. If you come anywhere near the capacity limit just forget it. My wife, who weighs 140 pounds less than the weight limit had tipping issues with it too, so I know it's not just my size. Not to mention this thing does the aquatic equivalent of a 360 donut once you stop paddling (terrible tracking). Lesson learned, if you want a decent sit on top, you're just gonna have to shuck out the extra dough. Don't waste your time with this thing. The fact it was selling at Walmart should've been a red flag.

Great kayak for bass fishing…

Great kayak for bass fishing in lakes and rivers. Holds all of my gear and then some. Only negative is that it does not track the best.

It's been an awesome kayak.…

It's been an awesome kayak. Great for beginners. Have been fishing on it a lot. Never tipped it, reeled in 39" carp on it. Doesn't track the greatest, and has no live well in the vessel. Needs a better paddle than what is provided. 4stars mainoy because of how the scupper holes are designed. It's very hard to find plugs that will fit if you like to plug the scuppers, they aren't completely cleared of plastic, so you have about a 3/4" hole then down about an inch and the hole shrinks to about 1/4 inch.

The journey 10 SS is…

The journey 10 SS is incredibly fun to use. It is super light weight, and very easy to transport. It does a fantastic job on the water and is very comfortable. It has a lot of storage area and will suit all your needs. I would recommend and do recommend this kayak for everyone.

Bought it a week ago, have…

Bought it a week ago, have been on it every day since. Clarion river, French Creek, pymatuming, Conneaut lake, and a few swamps and large ponds. Works slendidly, it's a 10 ft kayak with no skeg, no outriggers and..... It's 10ft. It's only gonna be so stable. If you can't handle it buy a sit in ya googan. Anchor trolley, skeg, good paddle, not the crap some retailers include with them. Take out the back storage and let it float behind you with a piece of 550 holding it on to the ring your seat is attached to. I'm going to attach my deck cleat on the right side so I can tie my anchor off, us let some 550 and deck eyes to make a trolley. Excellent kayak, super customizable, or good the way it is.

Ive owned this kayak for 2…

Ive owned this kayak for 2 years now. I think all the negative talk from other reviews is unfair. Remember its a 10 ft kayak under $300. It doesnt track great, but when you only have a 10 ft kayak, only the more expensive ones really do. Its not made for standing, if you want to stand get a 12 or 14 foot yak. But to sit in, its more than stable enough. In two years ive probably been out 150+ times, never flipped or even came close to getting wet. I couldnt find the right scuppers for these holes, though i didnt look all that hard for them. I found some wine corks that fit perfect. I have never taken them out, they stay in all the time and my butt has never gotten wet. And i dont have a seat or any type of cushion. As long as your not an idiot splashing water all over yourself, you should have no problem staying dry. Its easy to modify and not a big deal to drill holes for accessories or whatever you want to do, as i imagine it would be scary with a $1000+ kayak for most people. People just always have to complain about something. Bottom line is, if youre a beginner, or even a veteran on a budget, or youre not sure if kayaking is for you, its a cheap way to try it out. Its more than suitable to fish with. Use it for a few years, then step up to something better if you find it lacking. I got mine from wal-mart and their return policy is excellent, should you have an issue with it. Basically you cant expect perfection from it, but if you have realistic expectations of how a $300 kayak should perform, then youre good. Btw I weigh about 225 and i carry a small anchor and a lot of gear, so if its stable for me it should be for most people. If youve never kayaked before it does feel a little tippy at first, but within an hour or so youll learn how to balance and move on it, and that sensation goes away very quickly. Give it a chance.

This is a great little…

This is a great little kayak. Been using it on rivers and lakes with zero problems. Can access front and rear storage areas with ease. Sondolphin has scupper plugs that don't leak. Use those under the seat for a dry bottom and regular plugs up front for easy removal. I added a anchor trolley system and fishfinder. First thing I did was removed every screw and seal and added silicone. Has never got any water in the hull or storage areas. Stability is fine. Have run it sideways up on logs and stumps and it has yet to flip.

I picked up one on sale for…

I picked up one on sale for $229. I consider myself an experienced paddler that has paddled both canoes and kayaks for over 25 yrs, so keep that in mind. I started out launching the Journey on a small river and paddled a half mile against the current with the wind in my face. For a 10 ft sit on top, it passed that test with no problems. When I turned around and paddled with the current I was smiling ear to ear. I was able to go super fast, stop and hold the kayak still and spin around at will. She went exactly where I wanted her to, all the while being extremely stable. I had no problems with tracking at all. Sure, my feet and butt were a little bit wet but that's to be expected when paddling. I haven't used it to fish yet so I can't comment on those features but the swivel rod holder is in a good spot and I like the fact that the rear storage compartment is easily removable. Great kayak for the money.

LOVE MY NEW KAYAK ! ! ! ! !

This is my second year with…

This is my second year with my Sundolphin Journey 10 SS. It took a bit of getting use to but I love every butt soaking minute on the water.

Perfect kayak and great price.

First, i would like to say that all kayaks smaller than 14 feet track weird and I say this because I got used to my brothers 14 ft kayak and then purchased a 10ft kayak. The 10ft kayak I got was lifetime angler it tracked differently than a 14ft kayak and once I figured it out I fell in love with it. I now have 10ft kayaks for my whole family plus I just got a Journey 10 ss that you ride on top of for free on a pallet I got from a wholesaler for 250 bucks. I have tested it out on the water and found no issues with it tracking left it goes where I want it to. the drain plugs don't let me get wet by allowing water in the kayak I, of course, don't excede the weight limits or even come close to it which may be the reason some of the reviewers are getting soaked. The tipping issue is a personal thing because I can freely move around on this with no concerns of tipping over. the dry storage it good for exactly that license and cell phones along with food and has easy access.

Great kayak

Great kayak! I've only had I a few months but I haven't had any problems. I've turned it completely on its side and it righted itself without flipping me in the water. It does great in the river or lake. You can take motor boat wakes straight on or from the side without any issues. At first I had the problem of it pulling left with me then I read about how to control that by foot pressure. I'm still learning that technique but I'm doing much better. For the people that complain about getting wet...don't you intend to get wet when you get in the water? That's one the main reasons I go to the lake or river--cool off on a hot summer day. Seriously, after owning this kayak for a few months and just now reading some of these reviews, I must say I think some of these people writing reviews didn't know what to expect from a kayak. It's a great kayak! We've had tons of fun and plan to do more before winter hits. I do agree that the back compartment is hard to open and close but seals tight if it is closed correctly. That is the only negative to this kayak.

Bought kayak at Walmart in Burlington iowa.

Kayak did not have plugs. Manager said it didn't need the. That there is a certain amount of water supposed to be in bottom of boat. Ha. I laughed at them. They said it was a self bailer. So now if have to find plugs. Going to bass pro shop.

If you make a few changes this is a great kayak

When I first bought this kayak I was very disappointed. I use the dry well behind the seat to hold drinks while on the water and primarily fish while on the kayak. The problem I found was you instantly tip once you attempt to turn around and get into the dry well. I ended up buying some pvc and designed my own outrigger for under $30 and was done in less than an hour. It looks corny as hell but I can do whatever I want in it now...turn around, fish, or even stand up while casting. It now has incredible stability and is practically impossible to flip. I recommend to everyone who enjoys fishing without wanting to tip over to do the same. If your not willing to however this may not be the kayak for you when it comes to fishing...to tippy all by itself

It Floats......but thats about it

The price is right, it floats, but thats where it ends.

First of all, this thing does not track well at all. It keeps veering to the left. Pretty unstable too. Lastly, the self bailing scuppers are terrible. I went out over the weekend and my cheeks were soaking wet within the first noine minutes. Good luck finding scupper plugs that fit this thing.

Word of advice. If you are thinking about buying this kayak because of the price, save your money and hit em' with the hein with something better.

Good for beginer or float friendly waters

I bought two of these for my 14 and 11 year sons for $200 each from Home Depot, yes Home Depot. I will admit right off the slow speed tracking sucks but they handle like a go cart on the water. The youngest turns his on a dime and negotiates obstacles with ease on flat water, we have not tried any harder currents yet. I wish I would have bought a Journey 12 for the older boy, but he can live with this for a while since he is not as into it as me and youngest. We have built a skeg or sorts for his which made the boat go straight as an arrow but made it hard to turn, we are still working on a final design.

I am 47, 6'1" and 250lbs, I found the boats to be wobbly but they have great secondary stability and you have to work to flip. None of the dry storage is exactly watertight but with some silicone and thought about what you put in them they are pretty good. They are great platforms for modifications like anchor trolleys, LEDS and other accessories.

Sun Dolphin Excursion 12 SS Review

Many anglers become frustrated when they are unable to access the most productive waters in their favorite fishing hole. Bank anglers may not be able to reach the deep water, while those piloting conventional boats often have difficulty reaching the nooks and crannies where fish congregate.

These factors often cause anglers to consider trying their luck with an entry-level kayak. In the Sun Dolphin Excursion 12 SS review, we’ll take a closer look at the Excursion 12 SS and assess its suitability for beginning kayakers.

  • Good stability
  • Fast and maneuverable
  • Tracks well
  • Three rod holders included
  • Lightweight
  • Storage compartments are not waterproof
  • Slightly awkward foot positioning
  • The seat lacks any type of shock absorber
  • Thin material, which dents and scratches easily

Build Quality

The Sun Dolphin Excursion 12 SS is built with adequate, if not spectacular, craftsmanship. Most of the seams appear to be well-formed, and the rod holders and other accessories are securely attached to the hull.

However, the Excursion 12 SS is constructed from a relatively thin sheet of UV-stabilized Fortiflex® High-Density Polyethylene, which tends to dent and scratch easily. While this craft will probably hold up well to gentle use, you’ll probably want to look elsewhere for a kayak if you frequently fish rock-filled rivers and creeks.

sun dolphin journey 12 ss review

Storage Capacity

The Excursion 12 SS features a small storage compartment in the front of the kayak and a larger compartment (called the Personal Accessory Carrier, or PAC) behind the seat. The rear storage compartment can actually be removed and floated behind your boat if you wish.

A small console area is also included in the front of the seating area, which is large enough to hold a few lures or small tools. Unfortunately, none of the storage compartments are waterproof, so you’ll have to bring along a waterproof bag or container to store your cell phone and other delicate electronics. Bungee cord straps are located at the front and back of the craft and provide additional storage.

The Excursion 12 SS is a moderately comfortable craft. The seating area is rather roomy and provides plenty of space for the average angler. However, the molded seat is not very padded, and it lacks any type of shock-absorber, so you’ll feel every minor bump you encounter.

The kayak does include two small padded areas on which you can rest your knees or legs, but the design of the leg area may force you to hold your feet at a slightly awkward angle.

The Excursion 12 SS is a pretty stable kayak – especially when you consider its affordable price point. It allows for relatively easy entry and exit, and it does not feel like it will tip over every time you move. It probably isn’t stable enough to allow anglers to stand, but brave souls may want to try.

The kayak also flexes quite a bit during use, and it rocks back and forth slightly during paddling.

sun dolphin journey 12 ss review

Maneuverability

The Excursion 12 SS is reasonably maneuverable, and it is relatively easy to pilot the 12-foot-long craft into tight spaces. The bow wobbles back and forth during paddling and it will begin to turn if you lean too far in one direction or the other. However, it tracks rather well for an entry-level kayak.

The Excursion 12 SS is also a speedy craft, which is capable of cutting through the water and covering plenty of water in a short amount of time.

Entry-level products rarely possess the features and capabilities that mid-level and high-end products do, but they are often the best options for novices. The Sun Dolphin Excursion 12 SS is a great example of such products, as it lacks the features, construction materials and materials most intermediate and advanced kayakers want, yet it will perform adequately for those who are just learning how to pilot a kayak.

The Excursion 12 SS provides enough storage space for the average angler’s needs, and it comes with three different rod holders, which is a pleasant inclusion for an entry-level kayak. But perhaps most importantly for beginners, the Excursion 12 SS is a stable kayak, which will make it easier to learn how to pilot the craft.

On the water, the Aruba 8 paddles easily and tracks straight thanks to the defined keel at the bow. There is storage on the rear deck, as well as a secure hatch for smaller items. A paddle park across the cockpit rim lets you relax and take in your surroundings, without worrying about losing your paddle.

An open cockpit of the Sun Dolphin Aruba 8 SS kayak

The compact size and low weight capacity of this kayak make it more suited to smaller framed paddlers. An adjustable seat system, with a padded backrest and footpegs, lets you get comfortable in this kayak. The high-rimmed cockpit works to deflect splashes, giving you a dryer ride.

The seating inside the Aruba 10 is molded for comfort and comes with a padded backrest. Protective thigh braces protect your legs from the hard outer plastic, and adjustable footpegs keep you firmly in your seat.

A watertight storage compartment with a lid in the Sun Dolphin Aruba 10 kayak

At the rear of Sun Dolphin Aruba 10, there is a storage compartment secured with a lid and shock cord. A water bottle recess on the front deck is secured with a bungee so you can stay hydrated and safe on the water.

Sun Dolphin Fiji 10 SS

Length: 9 ft. 7.5 in / 293 cm Width: 29.5 in. / 75 cm Weight: 44 lbs. / 20 kg Capacity: 280 lbs. / 127 kg

The portable accessory holder at the rear of the Fiji 10 SS can be towed behind your kayak to act as extra storage. This opens up the rear of your kayak as a storage well, while your equipment in the pod stays dry. A hands-free electronics console at the front of the cockpit lets you use your phone, camera, or GPS while you paddle.

The fully adjustable backrest and molded seat are comfortable and keep you supported on the water. Padded thigh rests stop your legs from rubbing off the hard plastic shell of the Fiji 10 SS. Adjustable foot braces keep you comfortable in your seat.

Sun Dolphin Aruba 12 SS

Sun Dolphin Aruba 12 SS

Length: 12 ft. / 364 cm Width: 30 in. / 76 cm Weight: 47 lbs. / 21 kg Capacity: 395 lbs. / 179 kg

Aruba 12 SS is a long, wide kayak suited to beginner and intermediate paddlers. The combined stability and speed of the Aruba 12 SS make it suitable for longer day trips exploring rivers and lakes. The defined keel line at the bow and stern let the Aruba 12 SS track through the wind and paddlers can maintain higher speed with less effort.

The Aruba 12 SS has a large cockpit area that makes it easy to get in and out. A large cockpit can help grow confidence on the water, giving nervous paddlers a more free feeling kayaking experience.

Two flush-mounted rod holders of the Sun Dolphin Aruba 12 SS kayak

The removable portable accessory carrier can be used as internal storage or can be towed behind your kayak. There is also a bow hatch for small day items. Two flush mount rod holders behind the seat make the Aruba 12 suitable for the recreational angler to find their perfect fishing spot.

Sun Dolphin Bali 6

Sun Dolphin Bali 6

Length: 6 ft. / 183 cm Width: 25 in. / 64 cm Weight: 28 lbs. / 13 kg Capacity: 140 lbs. / 64 kg

Young paddlers will benefit from the large open design of the Bali 6. The stability and easy access of the Bali 6 makes this a confidence-inspiring platform for your child to learn to kayak. The graduated food rests and comfortable open seating means that this is a kayak your child can learn in and keep using for years.

The swim platform at the rear, for easy reentry, makes this an excellent kayak for summer days swimming around in your local lake. While they’re swimming, your child can stow their paddle easily on the paddle rest at the bow of the Bali 6.

The Bali 6 is light enough that you can get your child involved in carrying it to and from your vehicle. Involving young paddlers in every aspect of kayaking keeps them engaged and builds their love of kayaking into a lifelong passion.

Sun Dolphin Camino 8 SS

Sun Dolphin Camino 8 SS

Length: 7 ft. 11 in. / 241 cm Width: 31.5 in. / 80 cm Weight: 40 lbs. / 18 kg Capacity: 225 lbs. / 102 kg

Camino 8 SS is a downriver cruiser designed to let you sit back and enjoy the ride. The slight rocker at the bow has enough of a v-shape to track a little, but this is designed to go with the flow. The flat rear section and wide beam make the Camino 8 stable and easy to climb aboard.

Any water that gets into the Camino 8, as you cruise downstream, will drain out through the self-bailing ports. This means you won’t be sitting in a wet patch all day. The molded seat and padded backrest combine with molded footwells to give you comfort without overdoing the features.

A small storage area with a bungee tie-down system and some j-hooks, a drain plug and a carry handle at the rear of the Sun Dolphin Camino 8 SS kayak

At the rear of the Camino 8 is a large storage well. This is secured with a shock cord to keep your equipment safe.

Sun Dolphin Bali 10 SS

Sun Dolphin Bali 10 SS

Length: 9 ft. 6.5 in / 291 cm Width: 29.5 in. / 75 cm Weight: 44 lbs. / 20 kg Capacity: 250 lbs. / 113 kg

Sun Dolphin Bali 10 SS balances stability with agility to give you a recreational kayak that can explore with ease. The defined keel line gives the Bali 10 the ability to track smoothly through the water and cope against the wind. This v-shape flattens in the center to give you a kayak that is maneuverable too.

On long days out on the lake, you need to be able to store your equipment securely. The portable accessory holder at the rear of the kayak doubles as a watertight, tow-behind pod to give you extra space. Storage at the bow and a water bottle recess in the middle of the kayak means you have loads of room to store all your gear.

A padded seat’s backrest and a small, circular watertight hatch of the Sun Dolphin Bali 10 SS kayak

The comfortable seating on the Bali 10 SS means you can stay out on the water all day long. The padded backrest is fully adjustable to keep you supported. Protective thigh pads stop you from rubbing your legs against the hard plastic shell and adjustable footpegs keep you in your seat and upright.

Sun Dolphin Capri 10 SS

Sun Dolphin Capri 10 SS

Length: 10 ft. / 306 cm Width: 28.5 in. / 72 cm Weight: 44 lbs. / 20 kg Capacity: 250 lbs. / 113 kg

Capri 10 SS is a compact and stable recreational kayak with plenty of onboard storage. This lightweight kayak is easy to move from the rooftop of your vehicle to your local lake or river. The Capri 10 is maneuverable on the water but has enough of a v-shape at the bow to track against the wind.

The molded seat on the Capri 10 has drainage slots so you can avoid sitting in a puddle all day. An adjustable backrest and foot braces allow you to get fully comfortable in your kayak and stay out on the water all day.

The large storage at the rear of the Capri 10 lets you stow all of your equipment away securely. A smaller storage hatch between the paddler’s legs fits smaller items securely and within easy reach. Paddle storage on the side of the kayak means you can go hands-free if you need to take photos, or just want to sit back and enjoy your surroundings.

Sun Dolphin Bali 12 SS

Sun Dolphin Bali 12 SS

Length: 11 ft. 11.5 in. / 364 cm Width: 31 in. / 78 cm Weight: 48 lbs. / 22 kg Capacity: 395 lbs. / 179 kg

The Bali 12 SS is the larger brother of Sun Dolphin Bali 10 kayak. The extra length carries more speed over the water so you can explore further, faster. The Bali 12 is a stable platform of a kayak that stays balanced even in moderately choppy conditions.

The high capacity of the Bali 12 makes it suitable for larger paddlers, or paddlers who like to carry plenty of equipment with them. The large storage area at the bow of the Bali 12 and the portable accessory carrier combine to give you loads of storage space. If this isn’t enough, the portable accessory carrier can be removed and towed behind you.

Two rod holders and a storage compartment with circular hatch of the Sun Dolphin Bali 12 SS kayak

A padded seat pad and backrest keep you comfortable on long days of kayaking. The seatback is fully adjustable, as are the footpegs, so you can find your ideal kayaking position. Padded thigh protection means your legs don’t rest against the hard plastic shell of the Bali 12.

Sun Dolphin Bali 13.5 SS Tandem

Sun Dolphin Bali 13.5 SS Tandem

Length: 13 ft. 5.5 in. / 410 cm Width: 34.5 in. / 88 cm Weight: 70 lbs. / 32 kg Capacity: 500 lbs. / 227 kg

Bali 13.5 SS Tandem is an adaptable recreational sit-on-top that can carry one to three paddlers. The seats can be moved around so that solo paddlers can enjoy the same high-backed comfort as tandem paddlers. The bow and stern positions have adjustable footpegs, while the middle seat has graduated footwells.

Those paddling in a three can make use of the central molded seat position for their young paddler or pet. Paddlers can stay dry on the water thanks to the self-bailing scupper holes in the hull of the Bali 13.5.

Two large storage hatches and one smaller one give you plenty of space to stow equipment away from the elements. For larger pieces of equipment, there are recesses at the bow and stern, secured with a shock cord. With a large capacity, you’ll be carrying a lot of equipment before you overload the Bali 13.5.

Fishing Kayaks

Journey 10 ss.

Journey 10 SS

Length: 9 ft. 6.5 in. / 291 cm Width: 29.5 in. / 75 cm Weight: 44 lbs. / 20 kg Capacity: 250 lbs. / 113 kg

Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS is an affordable way to take your fishing to the next level. The large open deck design makes it easy for you to access your equipment when you’re out on the water. The width of the Journey 10 means you can move around to collect your gear and cast your line without risking a capsize.

The portable accessory carrier at the stern of the kayak can be removed and towed behind. This opens up a large storage well that is secured with a shock cord. There is another large storage space at the front of the Journey 10 SS, as well as recessed tackle storage in the sidewalls and a central hatch.

A cockpit of the Sun Dolphin Journey 10 SS kayak

Two flush mount rod holders behind the seat and a swivel rod holder in the center of the Journey 10 let you change your setup as you paddle. The padded seating and backrest couple with the adjustable footrests to make sure you stay comfortable on a long day of fishing. To avoid sitting in a puddle all day, bailing scuppers are fitted to the hull.

Journey 12 SS

Journey 12 SS

The larger version of the Journey 10, the Journey 12 is sleeker, faster, and more maneuverable, with a far higher capacity. This kayak is designed for fishing journeys. A V-shaped hull at the bow and stern gives this kayak enough tracking ability to move against a moderate breeze, but the central width keeps you stable when you cast.

There is plenty of storage onboard the Journey 12 SS. There is a bow recess, secured with a bungee cord, as well as a rear portable accessory carrier that can be removed and towed behind to open another large storage well. An internal hatch ahead of the paddler is suitable for small items that you need close at hand.

The seating is fully adjustable, so you can stay comfortable out on the water all day. This is kept a low profile so you can move around and grab gear or cast without being inhibited by outfitting. There are two flush mount rod holders behind the seat and a swivel mount in front, so you can keep your setup ready to go.

An articulating rod holder that can swivel 360 degrees in the Sun Dolphin Journey 12 SS kayak

Length: 12 ft. 3.5 in. / 375 cm Width: 33 in. / 85 cm Weight: 78 lbs. / 35 kg Capacity: 500 lbs. / 227 kg

The Boss 12 is loaded with features found on high-end kayaks. This is a lot of kayaks and to keep it stable, Sun Dolphin has used a catamaran-style hull. Catamaran hulls are stable on the water but still carry speed and track against the wind so you can get to your fishing spot more easily.

When it comes to fishing, you need space to move. The top deck of the Boss 12 is fitted with non-slip pads and there is a stand-up assist strap to help you get out of your seat. The seat itself folds to three different positions or folds away completely so that you can maximize your freedom as you cast and catch.

Two forward-facing flush-mounted rod holders and a large hatch area of the Sun Dolphin Boss 12 SS kayak

Both the front and rear storage wells are large enough for milk crates or buckets and both of these are secured with a shock cord. A swivel mount and four flush mount rod holders give you a huge choice of setups to choose from. Extra storage can be accessed through the front hatch and there are universal mounting plates so you can accessorize your kayak to suit your style.

Excursion 10

Excursion 10

Length: 9 ft. 7 in. / 292 cm Width: 29 in. / 74 cm Weight : 41 lbs. / 19 kg Capacity: 250 lbs. / 113 kg

Excursion 10 is the fishing-specific version of one of Sun Dolphin’s most popular recreational kayaks. This is a lightweight and transportable model that is easy to rooftop and compact enough to store. Getting to the water with less effort and fuss means more fishing time.

The large open cockpit has a molded seat, a padded backrest, and adjustable footpegs. You can fit the Excursion 10 to you quickly and easily, ensuring that you stay comfortable on the water. Just behind the cockpit are two flush-mounted rod holders, with a swivel rod holder in front for quick access.

The Excursion 10 tracks well against the moderate breeze, but is best suited to calm fishing lakes and shorter journeys. The lower capacity may make it hard to take all the gear you want, but there is a storage hatch for equipment at the rear of the Excursion 10. A water bottle holder on the front deck lets you stay hydrated out in the sun.

Excursion 12 SS is a closed cockpit fishing kayak designed to go further afield. The length, stability, and tracking capabilities of the Excursion 12 make it suitable for moderate breeze and mildly choppy conditions. This kayak can get you to your favorite fishing spot faster, so you get more time casting.

The portable accessory carrier at the stern of the Excursion 12 can be removed, leaving large storage well secured with bungee. This carrier is watertight and can be towed behind as extra storage. Topdeck bungee and a small storage hatch on the bow keep items secure and within reach.

A covered electronics console at the front of the cockpit lets you protect your accessories from the weather while still being able to use them on the move. Two flush-mounted rod holders and one swivel holder keep your setup close to hand. A comfortable and adjustable seat, with adjustable footpegs and padded thigh protectors, means you can stay out on the water all day.

Maneuverability.
