Super Cruise problems

Over the last few months I have been having intermittent problems with Super Cruise. 99% of the time it is fine; occasionally it won't work on startup, but after the car is parked for a bit, (like a reboot) it works again; Experienced short times of disconnect while driving and then it connects. Yesterday, completely dead. Took it to the dealership and the Service Manager and I took it for a ride. DEAD as a doornail. To the shop Tuesday to see what it up. Bumer. Any ideas in the meantime?

Complex electronics/systems that become constipated and require outside the box customer intervention to work is unacceptable imo. Perhaps a battery disconnection will clear the problem. These vehicles require a in cabin breaker switch. Having it completely dead though could be a fuse, loose connection or maybe a failed download/update which triggers a full shutdown. Interested to hear what is the problem. See they plan to have SC in all Cadillac's by 2020. How do you like the vehicle so far?

It could be many things, but the fact it would "reset" after a longer shutdown would indicate a bad module to me, based on my experience with my wife's 2017 Acadia. Her telematics module was bad but it was intermittent and turning it off it for a time so it would completely shut down, like ten minutes, would bring it back to life. It was amazing what didn't work because of that module, not just OnStar but no voice command no Bluetooth and a bunch of other stuff. It finally got to a point that it died and could be diagnosed. So it may be the module that controls Super Cruise ahs gone bad.

Could be module. active safety control module at 1100.00 active safety control module 2nd ECU 1100.00 Driver monitor system module 568.00 Also see second designs after 03NOV2017 build dates. Also notice they are tied into the theft deterrent. Actuator,Theft Deterrent or Frt/Rear/Side Object 57.00 Front seat LANE DEPARTURE WARNING Good under warranty

On a few occasions I've tried to engage Super Cruise and it simply isn't available and won't turn on no matter how many times I try. The 2-3 times this has happened, I take the next exit off the highway, find a safe place to stop and park the vehicle, turn the engine off, immediately turn the engine back on, get back on the highway and Super Cruise works again. I purchased my CT6 new and have had it for 10 months now and used Super Cruise probably 100 times by now, so this issue is not at all frequent. At least one of the times this happened I was on a stretch of highway I don't normally drive, so at first I thought it was a lack of map data (this happened before the recent firmware update to Super Cruise - since that update the vehicle seems to provide more info on why Super Cruise won't engage when that's the case) but turning the engine off then on again did the trick. Has anyone else had this issue?

Are you sure that you weren't "locked out" by the SuperCruise? I was having a couple of successive sips of coffee one time and the SC shut off as apparently it couldn't see my eyes, even though I could see the road just fine. I had to take the next exit, go through the stop/start sequence, and finish the coffee. Worked fine after that.

Still dead. Goes to the shop at 0 Dark Early tomorrow.

I've had Super Cruise state it was not available because my OnStar coverage was not current. After parking for about a half an hour the system functioned again. No changes on my part. I've also have it disconnect on our outer belt, a route that I've take many times, and when I try to re-engage the displayed message said I going too fast. I was doing 65. They've go some bugs to workout.

Cadillac can’t even get an iPod to work in an Escalade so why would I believe their “Supercruise” tech could drive me safely home? Their technology is a joke. Learn from your experience and don’t put your life into the hands of these putz’s

I got the car back this morning and everything seems to be OK. Time will tell. Problem was twofold. 1) the MAP sensor was out (?) Took them 2 days to get a new one. 2.)When they tried to connect it with Onstar that's when the 2d problem arose. Seems Onstar wasn't aware that the CT6 with Supercruise came with a 3 year connection(or so they said). They kept telling the Caddy folks it was a 6 month trial. Well, between OnStar, Cadillac Tech Support and the dealership they finally got it worked out. Worked very well on the way home, so we will see. BTW, they gave me an XTS as a loaner. Didn't like it one bit. It was unforgettable (for me); CUE was very confusing and the seats were hard as an stool. I could never get comfortable in the car. When I got in mine, it was like putting on a nicely worn pair of sneakers.

No issues that I can think of on 13k miles at least 10k on SC only. Lots of tips and tricks to consider. Could be glasses or the road or hw issue If you get the sc icon the car is good and it a driver issue like glasses or the camera cannot see you. If you don’t get a sc ion on a known SC road it’s a car issue. Feel free to provide more info it should work very well.

So does super cruise work if you have sun glasses on?

Yes it does.

Yes it does, but I have found that occasionally, when the sun is to the left rear of car and shining in on the dash just right, it can blind the camera at times and cause the SC to cut out, with a warning of course. There are also some roads where the SC won't allow engagement for what ever reason. Not every road is 100% compatible w/ the SC, even if it is a divided highway. The SC, in my opinion, is not completely matured. But it is well on it's way. Kind of like a "beta version" if you will, and must be considered not yet perfected. Us early adapters are like lab mice (or crash test dummies) on this one and must maintain situational awareness, accordingly. And be willing to work through the shortcomings with an open mind. It will get better with age and upgrades, if the SC keeps being available. Don't be surprised if it is completely superseded when the next generation appears after all the lessons learned on this version are learned and fine tuned.

Level 3 autominous driving is 5-10 years away in the US. I ain't gonna be around for it; at least behind the wheel.

Haven't you heard, you're just supposed to believe. All non-believers will be rounded up and put in reeducation camps where you must drive an obstical course all day until you relent. Then you will be issued a one time voucher to summon a self driving car to take you home as they tow away your personal car and send to the crusher because it's been deemed too dangerous to the self driving car fleet run by the department of transportation.

Because current semi-autonomous vehicle sensor systems rely too heavily on cameras, they are ineffective in inclement weather. Roads need to be upgraded with electronic marker systems (smart roads) to solve this. Once that type of infrastructure is in place, fully-autonomous vehicles will happen. The biggest safety obstacle remaining will be manual drivers. At that point, manual driving will be made prohibitively expensive through high insurance premiums to force drivers into cars that drive themselves and justified by lower highway fatalities (for our own good). Fully autonomous driving is a long way off.

Roads are far from the only issue. The number of variables that an automated vehicle really will have to deal with is mind boggling. The level of sophistication off the charts. Don't forget the setbacks from law suits that are likely once people start getting killed. I get tired of these over simplified statements. It's great that so many people want machines making moral decisions for us. Example: Do I kill the person around the next corner in the middle of the road, or do I miss them and kill my passenger (who paid a lot of money for their car....that is if the government lets you own a car still) by swerving and driving off the cliff? Might as well turn the world over to Skynet. Most people assume that taking the driver out of the equation is the best way to go. Well that's far from a proven reality and there are some engineers that think that's a mistake, and the best way to go is just very sophisticated assistance tools.

The only problem with the moral dilemma (and in most cases it is always presented this way not just you) is that there are at least 4 choices not 2, the first is to stop, the second is swerve away from the cliff, third is hit the person and fourth is go off the cliff. Most likely the autonomous car will choose #1 then #2 if the car hasn't stopped in time. I am not a fan of fully autonomous cars but I have never in all of my driving had to make these moral decisions that are often given as a reason for not to have autonomous cars. And for some reason stopping isn't given as one of the choices. In theory the autonomous car will "see" the person/crowd/baby/old lady before a human will and shouldn't be distracted like a human.

Being in my late 70's with over 50 years as a design engineer in electronics and other I have seem much new technology come on-line. I have continually seen self styled gurus come out of the woodwork predicting each new thing would cause disaster, but somehow we continue to survive. Since I have been driving new car features have cut the pre-driver death rate by a factor of 3. It is sad that faulty airbags have killed a few. However, they saved many more. Semi-autonomous cars will always have some fatalities that a human driver would not have had. However, it is ridiculous to imagine that that fault rate might nearly match the results of DUI, inattention, fatigue, and physical reaction limits. For example at 70mph the "pedestrian at risk" zone is about half as long for an AI system as for a human just due to the basic biological reaction time limits, even assuming the human is sober and paying attention. I was recently driving at night in the north east. It rained so hard I could not see the lane markers or the car ahead of me. There was no exit to wait it out and stopping in heavy nearly blind traffic might be fatal. However, Super Cruise handled it all fine and kept up from harm. I have a relative who will not fly, and points to air crash deaths that would not occurred had they driven instead. This demonstrates a complete failure to understand the subject of safety.

^^^^^ #1 Great post. I have the Super Cruise and use it all the time on long haul drives. Has it's quirks that one must be aware of and prepared / anticipate for, otherwise it works as advertised, and better than I expected. I especially appreciated it in the Northern Virginia I95 stop and go traffic jams. But, bottom line is, Driver must remain alert and ready to take control if needed. Common sense pretty much rules here and those lacking in that aspect are better off not having technology like this at their finger tips.

Problem back again. Worked fine until Monday. Work for about 2 miles then stopped. After leaving a business appointment 45 min later, it worked. Tuesday no problem. This morning, making a trip, no go. After lunch, works. Seems to have a mind of its own. Back to the shop Monday. Bunch of BS.

Well, took the car into the shop this monday due to intermittent problems with Super Cruise. Got the car back today. The Service Dept said it worked when they took it for a test-drive after some updates, ect. So, I go get the car back at 3:00pm today hit the interstate and guess what, Nada. Don't work. Back to the dealership and talked to the service manager. He stated they are having problems same as mine with another car in the shop. I told him, Fine, yow have until this coming Monday to get GM to get a fix for the problem orI am going to invoke the Lemon Law (SC has one surprisingly) for a full refund of the purchase price. I told them I have 5000 miles on the car, 4000 of the miles are back and forth to your shop. he he. We shall see.

One thing I'm curious about is has the map updated lately? I think I read that if the map hasn't updated online for 7 months super cruise won't engage. Maybe your still having some telematics problem.

^^^1. There ya go Lizbill. Now you have an advocate, hopefully. Really hope you get the SC problems worked out now that CCS is involved. I have put, probably, 2k miles worth of driving on my SC in the past 3-4 months running between NY, MA and NC and really like it. Hope you get to enjoy it also.

Sorry, I'm a bit of a new comer here, but how does one go about getting the map updated? (My CT6 is 7 months old, and unless it happens "magically", I've never had the maps updated.)

It is done "magically" over the air. I think you can do it over a Wi-Fi hotspot or with OnStar data if you have it. Edit: From the manual MAP UPDATES Super Cruise map updates are automatically downloaded via the vehicle’s 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The Wi-Fi option should always be turned on. Super Cruise will be disabled if the map reaches 7 months old. To turn on Wi-Fi, go to Settings > System > Wi-Fi Hotspot. In addition to the automatic updates, your Cadillac dealer can upload the latest Super Cruise map to the vehicle. DATA DOWNLOADS Map database updates and GPS enhancement data are downloaded to the vehicle using the vehicle’s 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. If a mobile device with its own Wi-Fi hotspot uses the same SSID and password as the vehicle, the vehicle may connect to the mobile device to download the data. To prevent downloading using a mobile device data plan, use a different SSID and password for the vehicle’s Wi-Fi hotspot and the mobile device, or disable the Wi-Fi hotspot of the mobile device when inside the vehicle. To change the Wi-Fi hotspot SSID and password, go to Settings > System > Wi-Fi Hotspot. See Instruments and Controls in your Owner’s Manual

@kwickag - Thanks, I do have the wi-fi enabled. Sorry for the off topic question.

I think self-driving cars will be available soon after laundry folding machines. Laundry folding machines seems to be pretty easy comparing to self-driving: controlled environment, no weather, no insurances, no complex rules... everybody hates laundry folding and can pay big bucks for it.

I’m an autos reporter w/ the Wall Street Journal, working on a story about Cadillac. Hoping to speak to a CT6 owner about their experience w/ the car, Super Cruise, why you chose Cadillac, would you again, etc. Please reach out here: mike dot colias @ wsj dot com Thanks

@smatofu It appears Laundroid didn't make the cut. Company went bankrupt. https://www.engadget.com/2019/04/23/laundroid-robot-seven-dreamers-bankruptcy/

Super Cruise's Biggest Problem Is Us

Over 380 miles on I-95, Super Cruise drove for 346. It also canceled 25 times, in the process revealing the biggest hurdle for autonomy: unpredictable humans.

cadillac escalade using super cruise

The twist to this particular situation is that the Escalade itself is driving, inasmuch as its Super Cruise driver assistance system engaged, and thus I’m touching neither pedals nor steering wheel. And in fact, the Escalade initiates its own braking when the car ahead slows down. But I can see the two cars ahead of that going nose-down under hard braking, so I intervene and mash the brakes preemptively while doing two other things: eyeing the emergency lane to my left, in case I run out of room, and checking the rearview mirror to see if anyone behind me is running out of room—in which case, I’d also ditch to the emergency lane. And I nearly do, right about the time I see the 18-wheeler three cars back start to jackknife, brakes locked and smoke pouring off its tires. What’s your move, here, Super Cruise?

This situation is what’s known as an edge case, which is an event considered way out of the ordinary—a problem that tests the limits of a system. And Super Cruise makes you realize that driving inherently offers up an array of edge cases. Staying in your lane on a divided highway and keeping pace with traffic is the easiest task possible, low-hanging fruit for automation, and it’s still insanely difficult. There’s bleached-out pavement with faded lines combined with shadows across the road, construction zones with lane-shift chicanes, new sections of road that don't match the map. And, the biggest variable of all: other drivers.

cadillac escalade on super cruise

My trip south, from North Carolina to St. Augustine, Florida, included 380 miles of potential Super Cruise driving (on I-95 and, around Jacksonville, on I-295). Of that, Super Cruise was engaged for 346.2 miles—but not all at once. It canceled, or I intervened, 25 times. Its longest stint on the way to Florida was 86.5 miles, followed by another stretch that lasted 84.4 miles. But at one point, there were four cancelations within 10.2 miles. Sometimes Super Cruise would cancel and then turn right back on, other times it would refuse to engage for a few miles. A few times, I helped it, like in a construction zone when I nudged the steering the wheel through an aggressive lane shift, a real driving-as-Ouija-board experience. I wanted Super Cruise to succeed, but its problems now are the same ones it had three years ago, when I first drove a Super Cruise CT6.

cadillac escalade with an rv trailer

That car hated the highway in South Carolina, near Pedro’s South of the Border, where the pavement is desiccated, the lane markings faded, and trees in the median cast confusing shadows over the road. The Escalade didn’t fare any better (in fact, Super Cruise seems less happy in the Escalade than the CT6, thanks to its increased susceptibility to cross-winds). It made it 8.8 miles before abruptly yanking the wheel left, toward the median, and canceling. It canceled a couple more times within the next 20 miles before the pavement improved and it broke off a 22-mile streak. That one ended when a truck with a flatbed trailer changed lanes, squeezing in front with inches to spare and confounding the Escalade’s minimum-following-distance algorithm.

The problem, oft repeated, is that if you set Super Cruise’s following distance to anything other than its closest setting, that leaves enough space for fellow motorists to constantly cut in front of you, causing Super Cruise to have a freakout. But if you’re on the closest setting, Super Cruise is glued to the car ahead and all of its reactions are magnified. A human driver (a competent one, anyway) tracks the car ahead while looking down the road, too, scanning for clusters of brake lights or debris. Super Cruise can’t do that. It’s looking at the car in front of you, not the one a quarter-mile ahead that’s doing 25 mph in the left lane of I-95.

And yes, that’s a real example, and one that broke a 110-mile Super Cruise streak on the way home, the trip's longest uninterrupted run. I saw the Ford Escape puttering along with its hazard lights on and hit the brakes preemptively, in case the car in front of me ran up on it at a 50-mph speed differential. This is another unavoidable fact of automation, as it stands now—to some extent, your system is only as good as the driver ahead of you. That stranger in the Silverado is your braking avatar, and if they're smooth, you will be too. Same deal if they're not.

cadillac escalade parked on a beach

Champions of autonomy, people who think we’re 10 years away from Level 5 driverless cars, should take a ride in a Super Cruise Caddy. Somehow, the true difficulty of driving is brought into sharper relief when you’re two-handing a burrito and supervising the car like a nervous driver-ed instructor. “OK, getting a little close to the truck on the right there, S.C.! Let’s crowd left a little bit when we reach that car in the breakdown lane. That Bonneville is definitely going to cut in front of you to get around the RV, so be ready for that.” Driving isn’t just about perceiving the physical world. There’s a lot of context, a lot of experience and judgement at work. Otherwise, teen drivers and their sharp reaction times would have the lowest insurance rates. I’m pretty sure that’s not the case.

It’s amazing that you can buy a car that will physically control itself for 100 miles or more on the highway. But you also never know when it’ll do that or when it’ll go 100 yards before a vape enthusiast in a Hyundai Tiburon decides to swerve in front of you with three inches of margin. Call me a Luddite, but I think that driving—as a pleasure, a necessity, an industry—is safe. Cars might get smarter, but people never will.

2021 Cadillac Escalade Super Cruise Review: The Hands-Free Future of Highway Driving

Cadillac’s Super Cruise turns the already excellent Escalade into the standard of the world.

Cadillac Escalade photo

You step up into the 2021 Cadillac Escalade , you get it on the highway, and the Super Cruise light illuminates itself on the dash. You click the button, a strip of light on the steering wheel turns green, and then that's it. For all intents and purposes, you're just a supervisor. Hands are off the wheel, eyes are on the road, away you go down the Interstate.

When this happens, everything changes. Really, you're no longer in a car as you know it. In my case, you're in a big luxurious room on wheels that, for as long are you're on a mapped highway—which was every highway I drove on—you just have to keep looking ahead. You begin to adjust to your surroundings, you get more curious about what's on the radio. A question pops into your head: What do I do now? Besides shut off the heated steering wheel, that is.

2021 Cadillac Escalade Platinum, By the Numbers

  • Base Price (as Tested):  $77,890 ($112,465)
  • Powertrain: 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 | 10-speed automatic transmission | four-wheel drive
  • Horsepower: 420 @ 5,600 RPM
  • Torque: 460 lb-ft @ 4,100 RPM
  • Curb Weight: 5,822 pounds
  • EPA Fuel Economy: 14 mpg city | 19 highway | 16 combined
  • Quick Take: Sell all your shit and buy this thing.

Super Cruising

The 2021 Escalade Platinum is one of the biggest luxury SUVs you can buy and the Lincoln Navigator 's arch-nemesis. It's a seven- or eight-passenger behemoth with a big giant everything and a massive reputation to boot. In its latest iteration, it finally lives up to the hype it's been building for five generations—especially when fitted with Super Cruise, General Motors' $2,500 advanced driver-assistance system. Any trim that has the word "Platinum" in the name gets it as an option, and my loaner was equipped as such. Once Super Cruise turns on, the question of "What do I do now?" is an easy one to answer.

You flick on the heated and cooled massage seats. Whatever music you eventually decide to listen to sounds the best that you've ever heard it because it's being piped out of a 36-speaker AKG system. So it better. You can also—so long as you're attentive—eat, drink, rub your hands together in anticipation like a cartoon villain. Or just relax.

This is all made possible by Super Cruise, Cadillac's hands-free highway driver-assist. As far as I'm concerned, it's truly one of the best driver-assist systems out there. You get on the highway, a light blinks on in the dash, and after the click of a button, you can take your hands off the wheel as the car maintains a set speed, stays in its lane, and changes lanes when you toggle the turn signals. Since GM has mapped pretty much the entire Interstate with LiDAR , you can travel mile after mile without ever touching the steering wheel. Think of it as a really advanced radar cruise control and lane-centering system combined into one.

Cadillac makes it clear that it's absolutely not a self-driving system, which becomes obvious if you try to abuse it. If you take your eyes off the road for more than five seconds, the green light on the steering wheel starts blinking. After that, it's only a few seconds   before the light goes red, the system tells you to regain control, and you have to wait several seconds until it re-enables itself.

It's also careful about where it can be used. For instance, it knew if there was a construction zone ahead. If that was the case, it alerted me to regain control well before I crossed through it. This applied to any parts of the highway it encountered that were unmapped or under construction. It wasn't a common occurrence, but the Escalade always handled it well, letting me re-enable Super Cruise as soon as it was safe to do so.

If you don't regain control when Super Cruise tells you it's going to shut off, the car gradually begins decelerating until it turns on the hazard lights and stops completely. If you're a repeat offender and must re-enable the system multiple times, it will eventually lock you out altogether. A voice tells you that the system is shutting off for good—I imagined it was Mary Barra—and then you must shut off the engine to get Super Cruise back.

message-editor%2F1612486824203-b.jpg

I got locked out once and I didn't let it happen again. Why? Because Super Cruise is not something you're going to want to live without once you've had a taste. It handled every traffic situation I encountered, from twisty dual carriageways like New England's Merrit Parkway to erratic drivers between Boston and Philadelphia. It stayed in the center of its lane, it slowed down for tighter corners, and if other drivers got too close—truck drivers, mostly—it would nudge itself over to make you feel a little better.

It changed lanes smoothly when I asked it to via the blinker stalk, taking a brief moment to make sure the coast was clear and then moving over smoothly and predictably. It would sometimes get confused and hang between two lanes if I didn't hold the stalk down until most of the car was in the other lane, but that was user error more than anything. It was also one of the few things that could be qualified as a "mistake" that Super Cruise ever made while I was using it.

If you find yourself driving long distances consistently, Super Cruise is really a must-have, and if you're curious whether or not your local highways are mapped with LiDAR, Cadillac has a convenient page on its website to tell you . You'll notice if you look at that map that it covers almost every major stretch of Interstate, meaning if you wanted to hop on Interstate 80 in New Jersey and drive all the way to California, hands-free, you could.

Speaking of the Interstate, the longest I spent without touching the wheel of this Escalade was about 150 miles on my way from Philadelphia to Boston. Generally, the only time the system wasn't enabled is when I had to change highways or if there was a construction zone. It was always just a matter of time until it came back online, though.

This system changes the way you think about driving on the highway. It's no longer, "Oh god, I have to spend three hours on the Interstate." It's, "Oh, God, after I spend three hours on the Interstate I'm actually going to have to stop supervising and drive this thing . "

The Good Continues Off the Highway

That's not to say this new Escalade is bad to drive. In fact, if you read my previous review of a non-Super Cruise-equipped Escalade, you'll know it hides at least a portion of its immense weight effectively due to advanced magnetic shocks and adaptive air suspension. Thanks to its 420-horsepower, 6.2-liter V8, it also has plenty of power, and the 10-speed automatic transmission is just as sweet as usual: shifting smoothly, quietly, perfectly. It's good to drive for an SUV, but Super Cruise makes the mundane part of getting from point A to B feel like even more of a chore than it already is. You wish you could turn it on in more circumstances.

message-editor%2F1612486673073-i.jpg

But what really makes all of this work—what makes this new rolling house you're in feel like somewhere you want to spend time—is the interior you get with the top-of-the-range "Platinum" trim. The previous "Premium Luxury" Escalade I had felt solid and luxurious. This Platinum car is over the top. The wood is some of the most ornate and tasteful I've ever seen in a vehicle, every soft-touch plastic surface in the cheaper car is now upholstered in supple white cotton. It's just hard to believe this is based on the Tahoe at all .

Minor Faults

Despite all of this, not a lot of people notice that you're driving an Escalade with no hands. But with a sticker price of $112,465, they should. Cadillac needs to do a bit of a better job marketing Super Cruise when a car is equipped with it. Put a badge on the outside so people know what they're missing when they pass you on the highway. Make the Super Cruise logo something visually interesting, not just a steering wheel, or a boring-looking driver-assist switch. Autonomous driving was just a dream for GM 70 years ago , but behind the wheel of this Escalade, you get the impression that it's finally beginning to be realized. Show us that!

And if I'm going to spend a little time complaining, the only real fault of this truck is its size. It's tough to park by yourself, the automatic parking system doesn't work very well, and it takes up most of its own lane. Super Cruise feels great in something this big because it's so comfortable, but there were multiple instances during my time with the Escalade that I wished I was in something smaller. There is no getting around this thing's sheer physical mass.

The Standard of the World

It's impossible to end on a negative note for this truck, though. I said before not many people realize you're Super Cruising hands-free down the Interstate. But the few who do notice really notice.

message-editor%2F1612486979179-inlineb.jpg

One guy in a Bentley Bentayga on Merrit Parkway did. Midway around a sweeping left turn, his passenger looked over, uttered something to him, and they both took quick glances looking over at me, and then my steering wheel, and then back at me. I looked back and imagined what they were thinking.

It didn't matter they were in a car that, when comparing base prices, cost double what this Escalade does. The badge on the front of his Bentley didn't matter either. At that moment, he was driving, and for all intents and purposes, I wasn't. I was just making sure the car didn't mess up, which it never did.

For $112,465, this Cadillac is worth far more than every penny. But even having said that, I'll be the first to admit that the brand still has work to do in order to fix its reputation. It has spent much of the 2000s—arguably far longer than that—struggling to nail down its identity. "Standard of the World" used to be a complete joke.

In this Escalade, though, it's just not so funny anymore.

Cool Cruiser

Dumb question I know, but I've been wondering this for a while, and I don't think I've seen it answered. Obviously not offered in Vintages, the Martini Bar, or World-Class, but what about at the Sunset Bar or in Michael's?

Also, Pimm's Cup, same question.

I was able to get a Moscow Mule at the World Class Bar on Equinox in December.

Yay! Thanks so much.

Ensemble Lounge or Passport bar (I forget) also offered them on Equinox. They now offer Ginger Beer on the ship which you need for the "mule". :cool:

The Martini bar, Sunset bar, Passport bar and Ensemble lounge all normally carry both ginger ale and ginger beer, so you shouldn't have a problem (as long as the bartender is somewhat knowledgeable).

so you shouldn't have a problem (as long as the bartender is somewhat knowledgeable).
I don't know about the knowledgeable part...I asked for a Paralyzer in a few bars on my March 2017 B2B Constellation cruise and they had no idea until I finally found a "knowledgeable" bartender midway thru my second cruise. I also asked for a Pain Killer during my 30 days on the ship and no bartender knew how to make one or the desire to google it.

QE2_Fan

Lived on these on Solstice last October! The barman in Ensemble Lounge made the best one ever. I would often stop by to get one, or he also worked at the Sunset Bar so also got them there during the day. I know Mast Bar also made them but w're not as good IMO.

Same for us...served in the copper mugs!

We're also on the Solstice. Do you remember his name?

I'm not really going on the cruise to drink, but I need a libation or two in evenings.

If you happen to find yourself on Qsine, they make a mighty fine version of the mule as well.

Never had a problem getting anything if they had the makings, even if you needed to explain how to make it.

I like them because they're not too sweet, and I really love the spiciness of the ginger. I don't really like sweet drinks, but I can do a Pimm's cup because of the cucumber and lemon.

OCA REP

I believe that when ordering more obscure drinks, or something that you might prefer to be made a certain way, you should know the ingredients and be able to communicate that to the bartender. I would not assume a bartender is going to Google a drink recipe. Perhaps a PARALYZER or PAIN KILLER are well known cocktails, but I have never heard of them.

We enjoy a top-shelf margarita made according to a recipe we enjoy at home. A friendly discussion with the bartenders at the Mast Bar and Michael's Club, along with instructions on the proper preparation, got us service with a smile... and a nearly perfect margarita each time.

Enjoy yourself!

The taste depends on the brand of ginger beer. There is Goslings, Bunderberg and Fever Tree to name the brands that they have had on board. Sometimes if you order one they may also use ginger ale. Fever Tree is rare. A 4 pack of 6.8oz bottles at the lowest price is about $5, available at Sur La Table for $8.

As with most drinks if you change the spirit it is a different drink. Use rum instead of vodka and it is a dark and stormy. That is usually made with Goslings Ginger Beer and Goslings rum. I prefer Kraken rum over the Goslings.

Moscow vs St Petersburg – A Russian Rumble

Moscow vs St Petersburg

Russian river cruises are a fantastic way to discover the rich history and culture of an iconic nation. Moscow and St Petersburg are arguably two of Russia’s most famous and popular destinations – but which one is better? Two of our writers will go head to head in an attempt to persuade you why their favourite Russian city should be yours too – with Mark in Moscow’s corner and Jim St Petersburg’s. Ding ding! Let battle commence!

Don’t get me wrong, I do think that St Petersburg is a nice city – but I also think that Moscow is a fantastic city and beyond doubt the best in Russia. The entire region is steeped in illustrious history, from Red Square in the heart of the metropolis, where impressive historic landmarks including the Lenin Mausoleum and St Basil’s Cathedral dominate the skyline, to the world-famous Kremlin. If its history and culture you’re after, St Petersburg simply does not compare.

Moscow

Moscow also surpasses St Petersburg in terms of areas of natural beauty as well as tranquil parks and gardens. On a pleasant day, visitors can stroll through a number of the city’s wonderful green spaces, including the vast Gorkiy Park, the former imperial estate of Kolomenskoye and the ever-popular Park Sokolniki, filled with beautiful flora and a collection of charming attractions. Moving further off the beaten track is difficult in St Peterburg, whereas in Moscow, stunning outlying areas such as the Patriarshi pond area and the Japanese Garden in Botanichesky Sad offer the perfect place to spend a peaceful day.

When it comes to the shopping and dining experiences on offer, Moscow beats St Petersburg hands down. A wealth of authentic local food, delicious international cuisine and familiar fast food outlets are scattered across the city, offering tourists a plethora of culinary delights. Incredible mixes of gastronomic cultures are available in Moscow. Visitors will find everything from Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese dishes to Armenian and Azerbaijani cuisine.

Tourist’s hoping to pick up some local gifts will find a treasure trove of souvenirs across Moscow, at the range of opulent shopping malls and quaint marketplaces located all over the centre of the city.

In my humble (and correct) opinion – based on the facts in front of me – St Petersburg doesn’t hold a candle to the amazing sights and sounds of Moscow, Russia’s world-famous capital city.

St Petersburg

Sure, Moscow’s the capital; it’s great for squares, overly-expensive cups of coffee and the like. But you can never take Russia’s second city out of contention. Yes, it was built on a swamp, but Peter the Great clearly knew what he was doing. St. Petersburg is one of the most vital modern European cities, don’t let the devotees to the (admittedly, pretty) sights of Moscow fool you.

Perhaps it’s because St. Petersburg’s architect was Italian that it manages to so thoroughly stand out from the crowd of Russian cities. Maybe it’s the winding canals and the classical architecture. Regardless of the past, St. Petersburg is a city which manages to straddle the sweet spot between historical importance and modern style.

St Petersburg

But who says Moscow rules the roost when it comes to the historical? There are enough sights in St. Petersburg to keep tourists occupied for days, if not weeks.

Leading the pack is the iconic Winter Palace, an eternally magnificent reminder that Russia is always a hotspot for architecture. Beautifully pristine even after all these years, it remains a contender for the finest photographic subject in Europe – a grand mass of imperial pillars and colourful décor.

And then, of course, there’s the State Hermitage Museum. If the Winter Palace had Moscow on the ropes, this is where St. Petersburg draws back and flings out an uppercut to finish it off.  The museum remains firmly rooted in prodigious hype, but that never stops it from living up to it. Everything from Egyptian mummies to Picasso masterpieces can be found in the endless varnished halls of the State Hermitage, and like the city itself, you’ll wish you had days more to explore it.

And to top it all off, you can visit it all during the legendary White Nights, where on long summer days the sun never seems to dip below the horizon. St Petersburg might be known as a second city, but Moscow has best be looking over its shoulder.

Best of Moscow by high speed train

By shuguley , February 15, 2014 in Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Cool Cruiser

Sure would appreciate someone who has taken "Best of Moscow by high speed train" from St. Petersburg could please share their impressions of this shore excursion. From the description this sounds like a very long day.

Wondering how the 4 hour train trip was in terms of accommodations, etc. Also what time did you leave the ship and what time at night did you return? Were both legs of the trip on the high speed rail (I read that slower trains also travel the same tracks)?

My wife and I are considering this excursion. We thought that if we are making all the effort to go to Russia then how could we pass up going to Moscow, walking in Red Square, seeing St. Basil, etc.

Link to comment

Share on other sites.

If you are considering this on the 2015 June Baltic cruise on Voyager; my suggestion is don't. There is so much to do in St. Petersburg and although a train is one of my favorite ways to travel the time would be far better spent in St. P.

Thanks for the advice. Yes, this would be on the Voyager during the 2015 season but not yet sure exactly which cruise.

5,000+ Club

We did the Moscow excursion "on a different luxury line", but from your brief description it sounds very much like the same trip, so I will operate on that assumption. It is a VERY long day! We left the ship at 5:30 AM and returned at 12:30 AM. The highspeed train trip is comfortable, and while they call it "Business Class" it does not compare well to the equivalent class on say Rail Europe. When we did it in 2011, we did have highspeed both ways, and the trip back seemed much longer as the adrenaline and excitement had worn off!:D

Moscow itself is not that terribly different from any other big city in the world, but this Cold War kid never thought he would ever stand in Red Square, never mind walk the grounds of The Kremlin, or tour The Kremlin Palace, or see (but not visit) Lenin's Tomb, or visit The Armoury. But he did, and he loved every minute of it! Yes, it is a long day, and you barely scratch a scratch on the surface, but it is worth it. There is a tremendous amount to see in St. Petersburg, but every Baltic cruise goes to St. Petersburg, so you can go back if you choose to. Not every cruiseline offers you the chance to see Moscow.

RachelG

I have not personally done this tour, but our last time in St Petersburg, the private guide that we hired for a day was leading the regent tour to Moscow on the high speed train the next day. He said it was way better than the previous alternative, which was flying to Moscow and back. He said that you actually got to Moscow faster because you didn't have to deal with airline checkin etc. it did seem like a very long day to me, and there is so much to see and do in st. Petersburg that I didn't consider doing it.

We toured to Moscow from St. Petersburg via the hi-speed SAPSAN train last September, from a Baltic cruise on the Oceania Marina. You need to have a two-night, three day port call in St. Petersburg to take this tour because the tour typically leaves the ship around 5:00 - 5:30 AM and doesn't return until after midnight the next day. We didn't take the ship's tour; we made private arrangements with TravelAllRussia for three days of touring, the first and third days in St. Petersburg and the second day the tour to Moscow by train. Our cost for the private tour for three days was about the same as what the ship charged for the excursion to Moscow alone. There are a number of private tour agencies that operate in St. Petersburg and offer the Moscow train tours; we would strongly recommend them over the ship's tours.

All three days had private guides with car and driver. The second day, the driver picked us up at the ship and took us to the train, but we were alone on the train, and met in Moscow by the guide on the station platform. After our tour and dinner, we were brought back to the train and after the return train trip met by the driver and taken back to the ship. Because you are alone on the train you must have your own Russian visas.

If this is your first visit to St. Petersburg, I would agree there is much more to see there. We found Moscow somewhat a disappointment, particularly Red Square. The Kremlin and the cathedral in Red Square were also worth seeing. But the best thing we saw was the Moscow subway! I worked for the Washington Metro system back in the 1980s as it grew from 40 to 80 miles and although I was in the computer area, I learned a lot about the challenges of running a subway system. We used the Moscow system to get across the city from where we had dinner to the train station, and I was amazed at the cleanliness', speed of operation, the short headways maintained, and the courtesy of everyone involved. A very impressive experience!

We had been to St. Petersburg before, and so had the time to take a day and go to Moscow. Also, I really like trains, and the SAPSAN is a German train set running on Russian rails. Seats are like first class domestic air, spacious but not too plush or comfortable, but with enough room. Not too much recline, and almost 8 hours on the train in two shots is a lot for an old man. They come through and sell drinks, candy, etc. but the sellers don't speak English and no one around us helped, so we had just poor coffee once coming, and brought stuff with us for the trip back. Not too much to see from the train either, particularly on the return when it is night the whole way.

If you decide to go, take a private tour and avoid the overly expensive ship's tour. I'm glad we did it, but wouldn't bother to repeat the tour; we've seen Moscow.

Thanks so much to all of you for the thorough and thought insight. Yhe information you have provided is most helpful.

countflorida: Your detailed post is very helpful. We are not quite ready for a Baltic cruise but should do so within a year. Time enough to do our pre travel research, bookings and visa gathering.:) Thank you!

Basil, etc.

I did this on Seabourn. IMO DONT. Take Aeroflop (er Aeroflot). The train has non folding seats where you are literally knee to knee with your fellow passenger (facing each other). Further they don't believe in air conditioning. It's also the worlds slowed bullet train. I think I would have found more enjoyment wandering around the St. Petersburg and Moscow airports.

Countflorida,

This is a little off topic,, however we had planned a river cruise in Russia but decided we would rather stay on land and have booked about two weeks with Travel-All-Russia using the private guide and driver. I'm curious as to how you found them as a tour company.

The guides they provided were fine. We had a different guide each of the days in St. Petersburg, but both were flexible, pleasant, knowledgeable and spoke English very well, as did the guide in Moscow, incidentally. She was a bit aloof, distant, not too friendly, but otherwise fine. In fact, she was the one who suggested taking the Metro, which unexpectedly became one of the highlights of the Moscow excursion. If I have a complaint with AllTravelRussia, it is with their plan and its execution (more later).

I had requested emphasis on World War II (in Russia, the Great Patriotic War) sites and info. In scheduling us, they weren't careful about dates and a couple of the sites we wanted to see were scheduled on the third day, after we'd been to Moscow. But both sites were closed that day of the week, and that info was readily available, right on web sites describing them. Also, the included meals (lunches in St. Pete, dinner in Moscow) were not what we asked for: light meals with some choices, so we could avoid things we didn't like and choose things we did like. My request was ignored; we were given full Russian meals with a fixed menu, no choice. On the first day, a fish dish was the entre, but I am allergic to fish. Fortunately, I had the e-mail I'd sent with me and showed it to the guide, and she was able to change my entre to chicken, which was very good actually. But we didn't want a 3-4 course lunches or dinner (in Moscow). We had the guide drop the lunch the third day, although we never got any credit or refund. But, particularly in contrast to the ship's tours, the prices were so reasonable we didn't worry too much about it.

The people who were on the ship's tour to Moscow saw us boarding the same train for which they were forced to queue up and wait on the way back, and asked us what we had done. I was candid and open so they were not happy when I explained what we had arranged and particularly what it had cost. Also, when we returned to the ship, we found they had laid on a late supper for those who had gone to Moscow, so up we went and had something. Well, it turns out the late supper was supposed to be just for those on the ship's tour, but we and others on 'independent' tours, there were a dozen or more of us, crashed the party, actually got there first, and they didn't realize it until the larger group arrived and there weren't enough tables/places set. By that time, the 'independents' had all gotten served and were eating; what could they do?

A couple from the larger group sat down with us and asked us about our tour, and they were the ones I told about our arrangement and its cost. They turned to others who’d been with them and announced the details, loudly enough so the whole room heard, which started a lot of bitching and complaining. I gathered they weren't very happy with the ship's tour to begin with, and this was the straw that broke the camel's back. We finished up and beat it out of there, but overheard later that one of the excursion staff came to check on something and ran into a real mess. I caught a cold on the trip, which forced me to bed the second day following in Tallinn, so by the time we reappeared we heard about the contretemps' but apparently no one recalled who started it, thankfully.

Because of what happened to us, I would probably not use AllTravelRussia if I were to go again, or if I did, I would be sure to get confirmation of every detail of the tour. They do have good reviews generally, and we were certainly helped by their visa department and liked the guides and drivers. Their weakness, I say now with full 20:20 hindsight, is that once the sales person who plans the tour, sells it to you and collects your money, he (or she) transfers the plan to their Russia office for implementation; there is no follow-up to make sure it gets done right. And that is where our problems arose; we paid for a custom tour but got a standard package with a few destinations switched, and no one checked them out, even to see when they were open the day we were scheduled to go. If you check every detail that’s important to you, it should be OK, but that’s a hell of a way to have to do business, in my opinion.

Thank you for the 20/20 hindsight observation on your Russian tour operator, and better priced than the ship's excursion cost.

Thanks very much for the feedback.

We had the same experience as you so far as price. We originally booked a Viking Cruise but, hearing some things about the river cruises that made us unhappy, looked into other options. T-A-R cost the same or less than a cruise and had us in hotels for 11 days. We opted for the private tour. They have three tour levels, based on hotels. We originally opted for the four star as it did not cost much more than the three star hotels. Finally we decided to throw it all in and upgraded to five star. In Moscow we will be at the newly opened Kempinsky which is two blocks from Red Square. In St. Petersburg it is the Grand Hotel Europe, one of the most vaunted luxury hotels in Russia. Location is important for us as the tours use up only part of the day so being in the center of everything for our independent touring is important. As with many other cities, the less you pay, the farther out of the center of town you are.

We have been working with our salesman in D.C. and he seems to get back to us with the changes we want. He recently returned from Russia so is up on everything. When I asked they said they paid the full TA commission if I wanted so I got my usual TA on board so he is watching our back and giving us that extra level of comfort. He also set up our air, which I know pays him little or nothing, and got us business class for much less than T-A-R wanted for economy, though it took working for a while with a consolidator. He's happy to get his 10 percent on this trip without having booked it. He also took care of the trip insurance. We've been doing a lot of research on the CC sister site Trip Advisor and will write a report there. We will, I guess, become a source of info for CC members after having spent 5 days in Moscow and 6 in SP.

See all the gems of historical and cultural center of the capital in short time and without traffic jams or tiresome walking.

Depending on the itinerary and duration of the Moscow River boat trip, the tour can be 3 or 5 hours.

Highlights of the tour

  • St Basil’s Cathedral;
  • Stalin skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya (Tinkers) embankment;
  • The Kremlin;
  • “House on the Embankment” Stalin skyscraper;
  • Monument to Peter I;
  • The Central House of Artists;
  • Christ the Savior Cathedral;
  • Gorky Park;
  • Moscow State University;
  • Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Luzhniki stadium;
  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
