How to Get There
Takasaki is easy to access from both Tokyo and Nagano by regular train or Shinkansen.
From Tokyo, take a JR Shonan-Shinjuku Line or JR Takasaki Line train to Takasaki Station. You can also take the Hokuriku or Joetsu Shinkansen. It takes around two hours from Tokyo on a regular train or just under an hour from Tokyo Station or Nagano Station by Shinkansen.
Lake Haruna
Buy a doll, make a wish
Daruma dolls, made of papier-mâché and usually painted red, are the symbol of Takasaki, particularly since the city is the largest producer of these figures in Japan. Buy a Daruma doll, color in the left eye, and make a wish. If the wish comes true, color in the right eye.
The Shorinzan Darumaji Temple is dedicated to Daruma, but you can find the dolls all over the city. In January of each year, the main street from Takasaki Station to City Hall is packed with stalls selling Daruma dolls in all sizes and colors.
A towering figure of serenity
On a hill overlooking the city, the 41.8-meter-high Byakue Kannon (White-Robed Kannon) statue is visible from most areas in Takasaki. It is one of the biggest figures of the goddess of mercy in Japan, and you can climb up inside the statue to her shoulder for incredible views of the city.
Gateway to the mountains
Weathered by the elements over time, Mt. Myogi's jagged appearance looks unreal. It is a popular location for rock-climbing and photography. As you climb the mountain, you will pass Myogi Shrine, offering a place for solitude and relaxation. The shrine was established in the sixth century, but it gained significance during the Edo period (1603-1867). A steep staircase leads up to the main shrine, dedicated to countless deities and mountain spirits, where you are greeted by fierce Nio guardian figures on either side of the gate.
Lake Usui is a man-made lake. The colors of the fall make it a very popular location in autumn, but the natural surroundings remain all-year attractions.
High-altitude hot springs
Ikaho Onsen has long been regarded as one of Gunma's premier hot-spring areas. Situated on the eastern slope of Mt. Harunua. Ikaho Onsen has long been regarded as one of Gunma's premier hot-spring areas. Climb the 365 stairs from the bottom to the Ikaho Shrine at the top and then enjoy a free foot bath, a meal at one of the many restaurants, and the mountainous views.
Shima Onsen was the first hot spring in Japan to be nationally certified to provide health benefits. It is said to help cure 40,000 ailments. The Shima Onsen area is beautiful in autumn, but the mesmerizing blue water in the lakes and flowing streams will astound you in any season.
Be transported to another realm
Wander the nostalgic streets of Shima Onsen, and you will come upon Sekizenkan Ryokan, Japan's oldest existing hot-spring ryokan (Japanese-style hotel), which is said to have been one of the models for the Academy Award-winning animated movie Spirited Away.
Discover Japan's industrial heritage
Tomioka Silk Mill is a symbol of Japan's rapid modernization in the late 1800s. As the oldest modern silk-reeling factory in Japan, it was designated a World Heritage (Culture) Site in 2014. Thanks to the strong connection to the French origins of the mill, there are many French-style cafes and restaurants around town, which you can easily explore by foot.

36 Hours in Tomioka & Takasaki
Home of Daruma dolls and silk heritage
Last updated: October 04, 2022
Most visitors to Gunma traveling by shinkansen (bullet train) will go through Takasaki, the prefecture’s main transportation hub. The city is under an hour from Tokyo on the bullet train, making it easily accessible for a short trip. Takasaki is a convenient base for outdoor adventures and onsen visits farther afield in Gunma, but the city and its neighbor, Tomioka, are steeped in history, heritage, and culture that make them well worth visiting. Takasaki is the home of Daruma dolls, the good-luck charm now popular around Japan, as well as several art museums. The Tomioka Silk Mill was among the first modern factories in the country and became a model for Japan’s industrialization.
Local and international modern art
Paint your own Daruma doll
Silk production and industrial heritage
2:00 p.m. an artistic start.
Get a leisurely start to your day in Tokyo before taking the short, comfortable train ride to Takasaki Station. Head straight for one of the city’s noteworthy art museums. The Museum of Modern Art, Gunma features works by international modern artists, such as Edvard Munch and Claude Monet, alongside artists from Gunma, including Fukuzawa Ichiro and Yamaguchi Kaoru. The museum building, constructed in 1974, is an important work by renowned architect Isozaki Arata. Other museums in the city include the Takasaki Tower Museum of Art and the Takasaki Museum of Art, both of which focus on modern and contemporary Japanese works.
6:00 p.m. Hit the town
Check into a convenient hotel in downtown Takasaki such as the Hotel Metropolitan Takasaki or the Hotel Grand View Takasaki . After a bit of downtime, head out to one of the city’s many restaurants, izakaya, or bars. Takasaki has the prefecture’s most extensive dining and nightlife options, making it a great place to try Gunma cuisine and pair it with some local sake. The city has some specialties of its own, including Takasaki pasta, which is made using locally grown wheat and often features a soup-like sauce.
9:00 a.m. Views from a sacred statue
Byakue Dai-Kannon is a 41.8-meter-tall statue of the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy that towers over Takasaki. Climb the 146 steps inside the statue to reach the top, granting you sweeping views across the city. Visit in spring to see the surrounding grounds of Jigenin Temple awash in pink cherry blossoms , or in autumn for red and yellow leaves on the maple trees.
12:00 p.m. A day full of Daruma dolls
Takasaki is the birthplace of Daruma dolls, now a nationwide symbol of good luck. This icon of Gunma originated at Shorinzan Darumaji Temple . Visit this centuries-old temple to see piles of the papier-mache dolls in a wide variety of sizes and colors. The city is responsible for about 80 percent of Daruma production, and Daimonya Co., Ltd. is the largest single maker of the dolls. The shop has been producing Daruma for temples since the Meiji era (1868–1912). Today, both traditional and modern Daruma are sold here. Visitors can purchase a personalized doll with their name written on it, or try painting their own.
7:00 p.m. Tasty tofu
Try a wholesome dinner at Tofu Matsumura , where the tofu is made in house using organic soybeans. The tofu-centric dishes are as healthy as they are tasty. Tofu skins (yuba), made by heating soy milk over a charcoal flame, are a specialty of the restaurant. Tofu Matsumura cultivates a traditional atmosphere through tatami mat floors in the dining room and a bamboo grove just outside. After the meal, retire to your hotel or have a nightcap at a cozy bar nearby.
9:00 a.m. See the silk heritage
Tomioka Silk Mill was a crucial development in spurring Japan’s industrial revolution during the Meiji era (1868–1912). This model factory used cutting edge technology to optimize silk quality and improve conditions for workers. It also played an important role in cementing Gunma’s culture of textile production. The well-preserved mill has since been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site and is open for tours.

Takasaki, Gunma Prefecture 高崎
Matthew Baxter
Takasaki is an often forgotten city in Gunma Prefecture , on the Shinkansen line, north-west of Tokyo .
While the area has lots to offer, because it's not on most tourist maps Takasaki is a lot quieter and more laid back than Tokyo. Takasaki still has all the comforts of a big Japanese city, such as convenience stores and good train connections, but feels like Tokyo would have before the boom economy.
Takasaki has a population of 375,342, concentrated around the main station, which is connected to Tokyo via the Joetsu Shinkansen line. Many people here commute to Tokyo. Takasaki is a medium sized Japanese city, so has a good mix of the city life and countryside life.
If you are staying in Tokyo, Takasaki makes for a great day trip. It is also worthwhile stopping here on the way to Nagano or Niigata . There are many shrines, temples and traditional shops to explore in this city. The main area for tourists to explore in Takasaki is Kannonyama .

Byakue Kannon from below, Takasaki, Gunma
The main reason to come to Takasaki is to see the Byakue Kannon (White-Robed Kannon), a huge statue of Kannon in Kannonyama . Over 40 metres tall, it's one of the biggest in Japan. Visitors are allowed to walk up to the top for 300 yen, providing a great view over the city and surrounding mountains. Take a 10-15 minute bus ride from Takasaki Station to the Kannon sancho bus terminal. There is an area map just next to the bus terminal.

Ishiharamachi shopping street, Takasaki, Gunma
Ishiharamachi Shopping Street
Along the way to Byakue Kannon is Ishiharamachi shopping street. The area has retained a traditional feel, and is lined with old style buildings. There are many shops selling traditional crafts and foods, so don't be afraid to go in and try things out. It's also a great place for old-fashioned Japanese meals, such as soba noodles or tempura. During the cherry blossom season , the whole area is full of cherry blossom trees. It makes the view from Byakue Kannon even more impressive.
Within the Byakue Kannon complex, there is a large temple, Jiganin . Visitors should have a look around these areas, especially during the cherry blossom season. The temple is well maintained, with lots of useful information on signs explaining the history and meaning behind the area.
Daruma dolls are can be seen around this temple complex. Daruma are usually painted red and are considered to bring good luck to owners. Buy one and make a wish! Takasaki is the home of the daruma doll and a large percentage of them are produced here. Takasaki Daruma Market (Daruma Ichi) is held at Shorinzan Daruma Temple on the 6th and 7th of January. There is a small museum dedicated to the daruma doll including antique daruma dolls at the temple.
Daruma dolls can also be bought in various colors and sizes from the souvenir shops at Takasaki Station.

Large Daruma, Byakue Kannon, Takasaki, Gunma
Takasaki is a large city, so it has the usual large selection of hotels, including all the good chain hotels. Business hotel chain Toyoko Inn has two hotels right next to the station including the Toyoko Inn Takasaki Ekimae Honkan, as does the far more luxurious Takasaki Washington Hotel Plaza. The APA Takasaki Ekimae Hotel, which has a nice spa, is also right next to the station.
Other hotels in Takasaki include the 4-star Hotel Metropolitan, the Takasaki Urban Hotel and the budget, business hotel, Hotel Route-Inn Takasaki Eki Nishiguchi.

Experience the Wonder of Takasaki
tokyoandaroundtokyo.com
Takasaki is 50 minutes away from Tokyo on the Jouetsu-Hokuriku Shinkansen line. It's home to one of the best hot springs in Japan, the Kusatsu Onsen, as well as the Tomioka Silk Mill, a World Heritage Site. It acts as a connecting point between Tokyo and all of Gunma Prefecture’s sightseeing spots.
http://tokyoandaroundtokyo.com/model_plans/496
It is also known as Daruma Town for its manufacture of Takasaki Daruma dolls, and can boast of having the highest production quantity of these in all of Japan. Besides this, it's popularly known for its numerous Italian restaurants, and every year hosts the “King of Pasta” gourmet event. This has earned it its second nickname: Pasta Town. We will now guide you through all of Takasaki’s tourist spots, as well as all of its access routes to hot springs and sightseeing locations.
You can reach Takasaki by getting on the Jouetsu-Hokuriku Shinkansen line from Tokyo Station. This trip takes around 50 minutes.
Making Takasaki Station our starting point, you can take a round-trip tour through the hot springs at Kusatsu, Ikaho, Minakami and Shima, as well as visit Gunma Prefecture’s well-known tourist spot, the Tomioka Silk Mill.
To visit all of Takasaki in one day, we recommend the local tour bus, Gururin. If you buy the ¥510 one-day ticket, you can get on and off wherever you want, and it has stops at the Takasaki Byakui Dai-Kannon, a giant white statue of the goddess Kannon, and at the Shorinzan Daruma-ji Temple. Its route also passes next to several well-known pasta restaurants and allows for an affordable and comfortable access route through our recommended tourist spots.
You can also make use of the Kantakun service from Takasaki Station, which takes you around all the famous tourist attractions. You can buy a ticket at the green ticket window inside Takasaki Station, and then get into the taxi. Apart from a route which takes you past the Tomioka Silk Mill, a World Heritage Site, you can also enjoy Takasaki’s famous tourist spots such as the Shorinzan Daruma-ji Temple, the Haruna Shrine and more.
To reach the Takasaki Byakui Dai-Kannon, you must get on a bus at the eighth boarding area of Takasaki Station’s bus terminal, located by the west exit of Takasaki Station. Get off the bus at the Byakui Dai-Kannon Mae stop (this bus ride takes about 20 minutes).

- Tokyo Cheapo (繁體中文)
Many people already know about Takasaki due to its moniker as the Daruma capital of Japan. Although a title of respect, the small, unassuming town of Takasaki is a great destination in its own right, boasting a bustling food culture and impressive traditional landmarks, Takasaki has something for everyone.
How to get there
If you’re coming in from Tokyo, there are some very convenient routes that are both affordable and stress-free. Gunma is north of Tokyo through Saitama with several transport lines offering direct routes to the region. Here are just some of the options available.
You can get a bus to Takasaki from the Yaesu gate at Tokyo station at 11:20 or 19:50 (Bus no. 0104 & 0114) every day, check the second chart on this website for more details. Given how long it takes, however, you might want to bring a book or something to do for your journey. Although it would be the most affordable mode of transport, I wouldn’t recommend it if you are staying for only one day. Departure: Tokyo station Duration : 3 hours plus station to station. Price: ¥ 1,650
If you own a car or are looking to rent one , you can get there in about an hour and a half on the Kanetsu expressway. Tolls can be expensive depending on where you are coming from but it definitely saves on taxis and buses when you get there.
The Shinkansen solution
The Joetsu Shinkansen and Hokuriku Shinkansen are possibly the fastest and most convenient trains into Takasaki for those who are staying in east Tokyo with easy access to Ueno. If you arrive from Narita airport via the Keisei Skyliner, this is the station you will arrive at when entering Tokyo. Shinkansen tickets to Takasaki can be purchased easily from the station from ticket machines or at the green helpdesk near the ticket gate. Departure: Ueno station Duration : 50 minutes station to station. Price: ¥ 4,810 or free with a JR pass on a tourist visa.
Takasaki Line
The Takasaki line follows on from the Shonan Shinjuku track when it gets into JR Shinjuku station. This is a recommended route into Takasaki city. At almost half the cost of the Shinkansen, you can get the train and still pay for lunch at the end of your journey. If you decide you want a bit of luxury on your way there, you can purchase a green-car ticket directly from the platform that allows you to climb into an upmarket, spacious, business class -esque seat for an additional ¥ 800 . Due to the relative infrequency, only departing once an hour on the 50th minute, it’s rather hard to spot on Google Maps recommendations in English. However, it’s well worth pursuing this journey due to its cost-saving charms and reasonable sub-two-hour duration. Departure: Shinjuku station Duration : 1 hour 50 minutes station to station. Price: ¥1990 + ¥800 for the green car.
What to see in Takasaki
Byakue dai-kannon.
About 10 km northwest of the city center, stands the great Takasaki Byakue Daikannon statue atop the wooded hill of Kannonyama. Built in 1936, this huge statue of the Kannon, measuring approximately 42 m in height, is a landmark of the city and can be seen from anywhere in the area.
Its white robe is said to represent a pure heart in search of enlightenment. One of twenty of its kind, the Byakue Daikannon is popular amongst women and couples believing it bestows them with a happy marriage, fertility, and safe birth.
You can also climb to the height of the shoulders and get some great shots of the woods and city. The stairs to the top are populated with Buddhist deity statues and displays to keep you entertained as you ascend the steps inside the great statue.
Opening hours Nov-Feb 9:00–16:30; Mar-Oct 9.00–17.00 Admission High school students and above: 300 yen Junior high school students and below: 100 yen
Tokumei-en and Dokutsu Kannon
Built over 100 years ago, Dokutsu Kannon is an easy 15 minutes walk through a wooded trail leading off from the Byakue Daikannon. Inside you will find over 30 unique deity statues lit up with atmospheric Japanese lanterns.
Around the side of the cave is the small museum and Japanese garden Tokumei-en . Filled with beautiful foliage, trees and statues, this is a great spot to come to during the first blooms of Spring or during Fall to get the most out of your photographs. Opening hours: 9:00–17:00 Admissions fee: ¥ 800
Shorinzan Darumaji Temple
The temple is a 20-minute bus ride from JR Takasaki Station or from Gunma Hachiman Station on the Shinetsu Line, it is a 5-minute taxi ride (roughly ¥ 800 ).
Shorinzan Darumaji offers many gift stores, omamori stores, impressive displays of daruma and even the chance to take a daruma-doll painting class which doubles as a presentation about the meaning and history of the daruma doll- ¥ 800 for a small and ¥ 1,600 for a large. It’s a worthwhile experience to discover what is special about the Takasaki area. Opening times The gate never closes, so you can visit at any time. Admission Free
Lake Haruna
In the summer and spring, going up to Lake Haruna on the Takasaki Lake Haruna line Bus from Takasaki station at ¥1,480 one way is an excellent way to take in the natural beauty of Gunma. The area is famous for mountain hikes and swan boats- a great day out for an adventurous couple or group.

During this festival, alongside many new year celebrations going on in the area, you can expect to enjoy many spectacular shows and rituals in which the monks burn the Daruma dolls from the previous year. This is by far the busiest time of year due to the festival’s popularity, but if you want to come for the town’s famous festival, you can’t go wrong with this one! Opening hours: 10:00–16:00 Admissions fee: free (Jan 1. And 2. ONLY )
What to eat in Takasaki
BataChiki Selection, Aidan McFarlane
BataChiki (or Butter Chicken) is a Japanese-Bangladeshi restaurant exclusive to the Gunma and Saitama areas. Nestled in the OPA station building of Takasaki Station, this affordable south Asian eatery offers a pretty generous all-you-can-eat menu at a price you won’t believe if you are used to Tokyo pricing.
Seekers of the spicier things in life will appreciate the BALInese Cafe , serving generous portions of Southeast Asian food day and night in an authentic and fun environment. Kitted out with great deserts, flowery cocktails, and an aquarium, this is an ideal spot for a date, as well!
NOOR’s kebab cafe is a family-run restaurant 5 minutes from Takasaki Station. NOOR’s offers a range of international alcoholic and soft drinks, shisha, and a range of authentic Iranian food alongside the kebabs.
Where to stay
Hotel Coco Grand Takasaki is a hotel brimming with creature comforts, luxury buffets, jacuzzis, spas, and high-class service. If you have the bandwidth and the time, this would definitely be a luxury choice.
Hotel Grand View For aspiring (and professional) photographers with a bit of cash in hand,) the Hotel Grand View in Takasaki might be right for you. It boasts one of the best views of the city and a great scenic photo-op of the great Byakue Dai-Kannon statue itself.
A great meat and potatoes kind of spot right next to Takasaki Station, Hotel Washington Takasaki offers everything you need from as low as ¥6,900 a night. Look out for good deals on the usual spots like Booking.com, Agoda.com, or Hotels.com as these websites often do some pretty dramatic discounts when booking closer to the date.

Nagasaki () is an important port city on the island of Kyushu and the capital of Nagasaki Prefecture . Its rich history and culture and attractive location around a narrow inlet make Nagasaki one of Japan's most interesting travel destinations.
Thanks to its proximity to the Asian mainland, the port city of Nagasaki has played a prominent role in foreign trade relations for many centuries and was the most important of only a very few ports open to restricted numbers of foreign traders during Japan's period of isolation . In more recent history, Nagasaki became the second city after Hiroshima to be destroyed by an atomic bomb towards the end of World War II .
