Tauck Classic Italy

The only way to truly appreciate the Vatican is by an after hours tour. We were brought to the museum and Sistine Chapel after the crowds had left. To truly appreciate the full beauty, this is the only way to go. An amazing part of our tour and will never be forgotten.

We found out about this tour from reading Trip Advisor and I can't say enough about how wonderful it was. Olivia, our guide, was fabulour and so knowledgable about not only the art but the reigion, politics and architecture that make up the history of the Vatican and St. Peter's. the four hours just flew by and we felt that we really experienced the history , not just the artwork. I would highly recommend to all!

We engaged EasItaly Tours for a half day Vatican Tour. We had a knowledgeable and personable guide Nicole, who led us through the museum and all the other portions that we had expressed an interest in. This Company is first rate, and their guides are qualified and interesting.

We went at sunset with our group of 30 people and a guide , had the Sistine Chapel and museum to ourselves--just amazing!!

Be prepared to walk a lot, and to be amazed by the amount of beautiful works of art you'll see. Would recommend buying tickets online. You can save hours of waiting in line.

This was beautiful would certainly recommend seeing this. very peaceful, religious and lovely place to visit indoor and outdoor very picturesque!!

Tour operator.

It's easy to see the world's sights. To stand in long lines, push through the crowds, and generally have the same standard-issue vacation as everyone else. But that's not good enough for us, and it's not good enough for you. We believe that travel should be easy. It should be fun. It should be worth your time and the price you paid. It should re-energize and transform. And above all else, it should be beyond the ordinary. Because how you see the world matters.

In 1882, Herman Tauck arrived in New York City from Germany in search of the American dream. His determination and values were passed on to his son, Arthur Tauck, who would realize that dream. With ingenuity and an innovative spirit, Arthur started Tauck Motor Tours, a travel company that would give birth to a new industry. The first tour, through the back roads of New England, was created by this 27-year-old in 1925. It embodied the same successful formula used by Tauck today: do the right thing. Craft a life-enriching travel experience; provide it at a single all-inclusive price; ensure there is great value for money; and rely on recommendations of satisfied customers to build a following and grow the business.

Two elements that did change over the next 90+ years – and three generations of Taucks – were the scope of destinations served and the variety of modes of travel used. Today Tauck delivers life-enriching travel experiences to every corner of the globe, incorporating small cruise ships, premium riverboats, trains, helicopters and more. What started as a New England motor coach tour company has truly evolved into an extraordinary global travel company. The fourth generation of Taucks is now involved in the company. While remarkable in any business, this seamless continuity across generations speaks to shared vision and values.

Throughout its history, the concept of “family” at Tauck has gone far beyond those sharing the surname to include hundreds of valued employees, and hundreds of thousands of loyal guests. The story of Tauck is the story of a unique American family company celebrating a passion for travel – a story that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Rise early for an unhurried drive along the Amalfi Coast, one of the most spectacular drives in the world! Fantastic rock formations drop vertically into the sea; sub-tropical vegetation on the hillsides, together with colorful Mediterranean flora, create bewitching landscapes. Stop for a visit in the seaside cathedral town of Amalfi on the Bay of Salerno, with its many medieval antiquities. Continue winding through vine-draped hills to Ravello, a “terrace over the sea” known for its dramatic villas; its panoramic views of the coast offer a picture-perfect backdrop for a lunch of local specialties. Day 3 : A Guided Tour Of Pompeii And On To Rome

Location: rome, accommodation name: grand de la minerve, meals included: breakfast, lunch, dinner,.

Travel from Sorrento to Pompeii, a prosperous Roman city of 27,000 until it was frozen in time at the moment it was completely buried by volcanic ash from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD. The doomed city lay undisturbed for more than 1,700 years, until excavations began in the 18th century and are still in progress today. Most Italy vacations include a visit to Pompeii – but with Tauck, a walk through the ruins of Pompeii with a local expert provides a special connection as you learn what life was like in Italy in the 1st century AD. Arrive late afternoon in Rome, where you’ll spend the next three nights.

Day 4 : A Day In Imperial Rome

Meals included: breakfast.

Explore the glories of "eternal" Rome – once the virtual capital of the ancient world, and now Italy's capital city – with a local guide who knows them best. See the ruins of the Imperial Palace; the Circus Maximus, the 4th-century BC stadium where chariot races were held; and take a panoramic tour of the 2,000-year-old Colosseum, best known for its gladiatorial contests. The rest of the afternoon and evening are free for you to pursue what interests you most in Rome on your own.

Day 5 : St. Peter's & After-Hours At The Vatican Museums

No trip to Rome would be complete without a visit to the Vatican, a state and city all in one. First, your small-group sightseeing is highlighted by a visit to St. Peter's Basilica and St. Peter's Square... then, following an afternoon at leisure, a Tauck Exclusive after-hours tour of the Vatican Museums, home to a vast collection of art treasures (subject to availability and day of the tour may vary). This after-hours visit means you'll avoid the long lines and the usual crowds found earlier in the day; the experience is rich when you explore the treasures in the Vatican Museums at your own pace. See the Candelabra Gallery, Map Gallery, and the Tapestries; in the Sistine Chapel, gaze in amazement at Michelangelo's masterpiece ceiling – and be able to contemplate all that you see in quieter surroundings. It's a highlight that makes Classic Italy, Small Groups one of Tauck's most memorable Italian vacations... one that you'll remember forever.

Day 6 : Orvieto's Duomo & A Recital In Umbria

Location: orvieto, umbria, accommodation name: alla posta dei donini.

Journey to Orvieto, set on a 984-foot-high plateau overlooking vineyards below. Visit the Duomo of Orvieto, a notable Romanesque-Gothic cathedral built over a span of 300 years. The façade is a visual treat, a blend of sculpture and mosaic splashed with a palette of colors and magnificent bronze doors. Inside, view inspiring frescoes by renowned artists. After a trattoria lunch near the Piazza del Duomo, continue through the wine-producing regions of Umbria. Arrive in the little town of San Martino in Campo – just outside of Umbria's capital city, Perugia – and your home for the next two nights, Alla Posta dei Donini. The present-day hotel was created from two renovated villas dating to the 17th century – former homes to the Donini counts – whose guest rooms feature wood-beamed ceilings, canopy beds, period furniture, frescoes, drapery and exquisite fabrics; its warm hospitality, elegant decor and exquisite cuisine are reminiscent of the aristocratic country houses of centuries past. Tonight, attend a private recital in the frescoed music room of the Donini family, followed by dinner (wine included) at the hotel.

Day 7 : Old Assisi & A Taste Of Wine & Chocolate

Location: assisi, perugia, meals included: breakfast, dinner,.

Take a short drive to Assisi, a well-preserved medieval hillside town spread across the slopes of a mountain. Assisi was the home of St. Francis, who left a position of wealth and turned to a life of poverty, chastity and obedience, founding the order whose followers became known as Franciscans. The town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its significant art and architecture. You’ll visit St. Francis Basilica, built by the people, which today houses some of Italy’s great 13th- and 14th-century frescoes, as well as the final resting place of Assisi’s beloved favorite son, the patron saint of animals. Enjoy some free time in the center of town, then return to your hotel for the evening. Please join us tonight for a private wine tasting at the hotel, followed by dinner with wine included.

Day 8 : The Tuscan Countryside To Seaside Viareggio

Location: viareggio, accommodation name: grand principe di piemonte.

Depart Umbria and traverse Tuscany's lush, rolling landscapes; the beauty of nature has blended with the ingenuity of mankind for centuries – your travels through the rolling Tuscan hills take you through landscapes dotted with olive and fig trees that produce delectable local food products. Stop in a country village for some time to explore on your own before continuing your travels under the Tuscan sun to the seaside resort town of Viareggio, where you'll enjoy a walking tour on which you'll see the last home of famed opera composer Giacomo Puccini, and an overnight stay at the Grand Hotel Principe di Piemonte. Ah, the pleasures of Italian vacations...

Day 9 : A Storybook Day In Cinque Terre And On To Florence

Location: florence, accommodation name: brunelleschi.

For hundreds of years, Cinque Terre was accessible only by sea – five picture-book fishing villages nestled between the Mediterranean’s blue waters and the rugged coastal mountains. Cruise along the Italian Riviera for unparalleled views of this dramatic coast en route to the village of Vernazza for free time and lunch as you please. Experience a taste of daily life as you stroll the cobblestone streets and alleyways, stopping to sample locally produced wine, olives, and citrus fruit. Get a different perspective of the scenery as you travel back to La Spezia by train. Journey to Florence for a three-night stay in a newly renovated luxury hotel in the heart of the city – then join us for an elegant dinner at a historic venue in the Tuscan countryside, with beautiful views of Florence and environs.

Day 10 : The Art Of Renaissance Florence, Revealed Today

Art and architecture whisper the history of the ages in Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance. Your in-depth exploration of this beautiful city begins with a briefing by an art history lecturer, whose insights prepare you for a guided walking tour of Florence’s Renaissance heart. Then enjoy a guided visit through the collections of works by many of the greatest artists of the 14th and 15th centuries – including Michelangelo’s famous sculpture of David and paintings by Botticelli, Uccello, Ghirlandaio, del Sarto and others – at the inimitable Galleria dell’Accademia. Flourishing for more than four centuries, this world-renowned institution was established in 1563 as the first art school in Europe. After a guided walking tour and lunch at a local restaurant, the rest of the day and evening are yours to enjoy as you wish in Florence. On select "Ferragamo" departures, today includes an exclusive visit to the Ferragamo Museum in Florence, and a wine tasting reception hosted by a member of the Ferragamo family; ask at booking for details.

Day 11 : Masterpieces Of The Uffizi Gallery And More In Florence

Today, Florence is yours to explore as you please. Tonight, you're in for a treat as you join our local expert for a guided tour of Florence’s inspiring Uffizi Gallery, a highlight of Tauck's Italy vacations. Originally a suite of offices, it was first used to display the Medici family’s private art treasures in 1581 – thereby making it the oldest art gallery in the world. Its vast collection includes some of the most revered works of the Italian Renaissance, such as Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus , Michelangelo’s The Holy Family , da Vinci’s unfinished Adoration of the Magi , Bellini’s Allegory and Raphael’s Madonna of the Goldfinch .

Day 12 : On To Venice For The Doge's Palace & More

Location: venice, accommodation name: the bauer venezia.

Your journey continues as a high-speed train whisks you from Florence to Venice. Built on 118 small islands traversed by a canal network, this extraordinary city is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site. Transfer by canal boat to your hotel, conveniently located near St. Mark’s Square (Piazza San Marco); after lunch at your hotel, you'll indulge in the quintessential Venetian experience, a serenade aboard a gondola on the canals followed by an afternoon to explore Venice as you wish. Join us tonight for a farewell dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 13 : Venice As You Please & St. Mark's After-Hours

This morning, enjoy a guided tour with your local guide through St. Mark's Square and an inside visit of the Doge’s Palace, with its lavishly decorated rooms and Venetian masterpieces – including the legendary Bridge of Sighs, and the palace prison. The day is free to do as you please in Venice  – and to say that you have a lot to choose from is an understatement. There’s visiting the museums, an eclectic group housing some of the world’s most famed art; strolling the winding, narrow streets that lead to countless bridges; taking a boat to one of the islands in the Venetian Lagoon such as Murano, Burano or Torcello where the arts, centuries-old crafts, and a kaleidoscope of color wait. This evening, join us for a farewell cocktail reception at the hotel, followed by another memorable Tauck Exclusive: a private after-hours guided tour of St. Mark's Basilica, the centerpiece of the square and the very heart of the city... without the distraction of crowds, with the ability to enjoy it at your own pace!

Are all the relevant entry visa’s included in the price of the tour, are flights included in this tour, are the local guides on the tour english speaking, are airport transfers included in this tour, reviews from travellers on this tour, one of the best trips we have taken with tauck.

This trip exceeded my expectations. The hotels where centrally located and excellent. The touring was comprehensive and the local guides excellent. This tour was active but doable. Tauck used great restaurants and there was always enough good wine to go around. I took a coat and tie but never needed it. The Sistine chapel and the Vatican museum after hours tours.

Small group Italy

Organization was fabulous. Saw so many sights. Knowledgeable guides. Really great synchronization between travel, guides, meals. All hotels did a great job. Yes we were busy but there was free time too which you could use for more exploring or rest. I would not travel with any other group. The private concert, private tour times.

Classic Italy is Great Overall Tour of Italy

We took the Classic Italy small group tour in May. The weather was cloudy and rainy with pockets of sunshine, but that didn't impact our tour at all. This is an active agenda, with lots of walking, touring churches and museums, siteseeing, and eating! You definitely need comfortable shoes and casual, layered clothing. Everything! But specifically the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii, driving through Tuscany, the after-hours tour of the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, Cinque Terre, the gondola ride in Venice, and avoiding the crowds and lines.

Best first trip to Europe/Italy possible

My husband, not a natural traveler, and I decided to take our first European trip ever to Italy. We chose Tauck Classic Italy Small Group tour and could not have had a more perfect experience if we tried. In fact, can't see how any other trip can ever measure up. Italy was wonderful, the people with us were wonderful and the weather was wonderful. Although the we really loved all the small towns we visited, ending up in Venice was thrilling!! Here we were in this iconic place, seeing all those scenes we've seen all our lives in books and movies. Staying right on the Grand Canal was certainly a plus, as we watched the water traffic while gathered on the terrace of the hotel.

The Best!!!!!!

Our first experience with Tauck and we can't praise you enough! Your customer service extends far beyond five stars. We can't possibly tell you in this short space how much we appreciated Tauck and all that you delivered so we will have to write a letter! In the few short days since returning we have praised you to many only to hear the same! Without a doubt the private tour of the Sistine Chapel. But it was our tour guide that made it so very special. We could have seen the same thing with another guide and it would not have meant as much. The only one that topped him was our Tauck Director. Thank you Tauck for hiring such amazing people!

Another Outstanding Adsventure

This was our 12th Tauck tour and our 3rd small group tour. As usual, everyone was very friendly and by the end of the second week we were like family. After two weeks it was hard to say good bye. But we are still connected, sending digital photo files and e-mails back and forth and talking about our next Tauck adventure. As usual Tauck had lots of special events, but we will never forget our after hours, private tour, (just the 25 of us) in the Sistine Chapel. It was wonderful! It is these special touches that Tauck adds that no other tour company matches, that makes their tours so wonderful. That is the reason we have already booked two more tours for 2017.

Classic Italy

Best hotels and restaurants. Above and beyond expectations. Our tour guide took care of us like we were family. She is one incredible person. My girlfriend contracted a cold. She went to a pharmacy and got just what my girlfriend needed. I left 2 pants and 2 shirts in a hotel and she saw to it I got them back. Being in the Sistine Chapel for our after hours tour.

Small Groups Classic Italy

Group of 25 covered ages 9-90; friendly, easy to talk to and dine with. Logistics of the trip were very well laid out. Hotels and restaurants were much better than I could have chosen on my own. Trip itinerary hit all the key spots. I was concerned about amount of free time but it was a welcome respite. Lots of walking! Visiting the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel after hours. What a wonderful perk of this trip! Also seeing David and the gondola ride.

Trip of a Lifetime

It was AMAZING. My life dream has been to go to Italy, and Tauck provided an experience that exceeded my expectations. From the minute we met our tour director, until we said our final good-bye, every experience was memorable. Our tour director was superb. She worked hard to insure we would have an unforgettable trip, and it was. While in Florence, we came around the corner and the beautiful Duomo reflected in the afternoon sunlight. It took my breathe away.

The small group tour of Italy was phenomenal. We had a great time. The tour was very thought out by Tauck. The tour group leader was delightful, informative and awesome. We felt very taken care of. The sights were perfect. The only criticism was the food. Overall it was good. Some of the restaurants and food choices were just not good. The most memorable moments were in Cinque Terre. I loved that little village and the final dinner which was bitter sweet. We had a great tour made friends and now we had to leave.

Often robust – may include long days, active sightseeing, early starts, evening activities, significant travel times.

Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

A grand tour – in a small, intimate group... a trip of a lifetime through the most sought-after destinations in Italy with names like the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Rome, Venice and Florence...

Ferragamo museum & wine tasting, private classical recital in umbria, private classical music recital in a frescoed music room.

Between the late 16th century and the 1960s, a grand estate in the small Umbrian town of San Martino in Campo near Perugia was inhabited by members of the noble Donini family. What began as two 17th-century villas of the summer residence of the Donini counts became at the turn of the 21st century the hotel Alla Posta dei Donini, boasting many authentically restored features from centuries past. One of these is a sitting room that was primarily used for concerts, decorated with frescoed walls and ceilings painted by artists from the school of noted 18th-century painter Francesco Appiani. Fittingly, it's in this magnificent setting that you'll enjoy a private classical music recital for Tauck guests only!

Tauck Exclusive – Vatican Museums after hours

Explore the treasures of the vatican museums and the sistine chapel... without the crowds.

Founded by Pope Julius II in the early 1500s, the Vatican Museums display classical and religious works of art collected by the popes throughout the centuries. Combined with the Sistine Chapel, they're visited by around six million people a year, ranking among the most-visited art museums in the world. On your exclusive, after-hours, guided visit, you can explore the Candelabra Gallery, the Map Gallery, the Tapestries, and the Sistine Chapel… all without the usual crowds. So you'll be able to take your time to contemplate the inspirational treasures before you – including the spectacular biblical frescoes on the ceiling, which took Michelangelo four years to paint, standing on a scaffold... and changed the course of western art.

This was a trip of a lifetime and I chose it because I felt the itinerary allowed me to experience the best Italy had to offer. All my expectations were met and exceeded!

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally , you will need a passport valid for six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey for entry into Italy; however, you do not need a visa for the short duration of this tour.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally , you should contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what travel documentation is required.

Please note that longer stays abroad for any purpose may require additional travel documentation.

We recommend that you make at least two photocopies of all the travel documents that you bring with you. Include copies of the photo page of your passport that contains the date of issuance, the date of expiration and your citizenship. Secure one set of copies in the safe in your room while traveling and leave one set behind with someone at home who will assist you in the event your documents are misplaced, lost or stolen.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

Travel Protection Plan

Effective for plans purchased as of July 1, 2021:

Tauck's Guest Protection

Tauck's Guest Protection provides you with cancellation protection before your journey begins as well as insurance benefits while you are traveling. Guest Protection includes the following:

Cancellation Waiver – Provided by Tauck:

Under Tauck's Cancellation Fee Waiver you can cancel your tour for ANY REASON up to the day before departure and receive a money-back refund (except in Extreme Circumstances*) on the land tour cost, based on your original method of payment.

*Extreme Circumstances:  In the event of an act of God, war (whether declared or undeclared), terrorism, accident, natural disaster, outbreak of disease, or other event or circumstance beyond our control that contributes to or results in cancellation rates above our historical cancellation rates in the absence of such event or occurrence, Tauck reserves the right to issue a credit to you in lieu of a money-back refund, applicable to a future Tauck journey.

Travel Insurance Benefits – Underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company.

  • Trip Cancellation –  If you must cancel your tour due to a covered reason, the plan provides coverage for the amount you paid for your travel arrangements. Since the non-insurance cancellation waiver takes care of the land package cancellation fees already, this benefit reimburses the airfare cancellation charges up to the value of your original airfare purchase.
  • Trip Interruption –  If you have to interrupt your tour for covered reasons, the plan provides reimbursement to catch up to your tour or return home.
  • Travel Delay –  Provides reimbursement for missed, prepaid travel arrangements if you are delayed by a common carrier, natural disaster, unannounced strike, or other reasons as cited in the plan.
  • Medical Expense –  Reimburses covered medical expenses incurred in the event you become injured or sick during your trip.
  • Baggage / Personal Effects Protection –  Provides reimbursement in the event your luggage or personal effects are, lost, stolen, damaged or delayed during your trip.
  • Worldwide Emergency Assistance Services –  Provided by Carefree Travel Assistance; 24-hour emergency telephone assistance hotline for medical and travel related problems.

The cost of Tauck's Guest Protection is: $559  per person

This protection provides insurance coverage that applies only during the covered trip. You may have coverage from other sources that provides you with similar benefits but may be subject to different restrictions depending upon your other coverages. You may wish to compare the terms of this policy with your existing life, health, home and automobile policies. If you have any questions about your current coverage, call your insurer, insurance agent or broker.

This optional Guest Protection must be requested at time of booking and fee must be included with initial payment. Fees are based on costs as of July 1, 2021, and are subject to change. Details will be provided with written confirmation of your tour reservation. Guest Protection does not protect travel agent commissions. Reimbursements will be made according to original method of payment. The amount of any refund shall be reduced by any recoveries obtained by you from any third parties.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

If You Have To Cancel

If you cancel within 10 days of initial deposit Within the first 10 days after you place your initial deposit, you may cancel your reservation for any reason with no cancellation fees. If you cancel more than 10 days after initial deposit Regardless of reason, cancellations result in costly charges from our travel and hotel providers covering penalties and fees incurred by canceling confirmed bookings. These fees vary from tour to tour. Therefore, the following fees apply.

Cancellation Fees with Tauck's Guest Protection Plan:

Loss of Guest Protection fee, per person

Cancellation Fees without Tauck's Guest Protection Plan :

60 days or more before departure = $600 per person

59-8 days before departure = $900 per person

In the event of an unforeseen circumstance beyond our control, Tauck reserves the right to amend the cancellation terms outlined herein.

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Checked Luggage – General

Due to space restrictions, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one suitcase per person weighing no more than 50 pounds (23 kg) and with overall dimensions (length + width + height) not exceeding 62 inches (158 cm).

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage - General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and that you bring only those items you need handy during the day such as make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or on the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

While drinking water is generally safe at all our hotels, bottled water will be available wherever the local water is not fit to drink. We also provide bottled water on the motor coaches.

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour.

If you have a medical condition that might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify us as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATIONS

If you are a resident of the U.S., no vaccinations are currently required for travel to Italy. For complete vaccination and inoculation information please contact your physician, the public health service in your area, or the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to obtain information regarding vaccinations that may be required for your journey. The Travelers' Health Section of the CDC operates a 24-hour "Travelers' Health Hotline" at 800-232-4636 (toll-free in the U.S.). You may also log on to the CDC website by clicking here.

If you are a resident of another country, please contact an embassy or consulate of Italy to determine what vaccination(s) may be required for your travel.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Classic Italy covers 1,270 mi (2,043 km) and, though paced to accommodate all our guests, is nonetheless an active and extensive tour. To enjoy this tour, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances, often over unpaved and uneven surfaces. Some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Italy is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. You will encounter cobblestone streets, narrow passageways, and some steep and winding staircases. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do at the various sites and towns is at your discretion.

In addition, coach travel along the many "Yellow Roads" on this tour are very windy and may cause you some discomfort if you are prone to motion sickness. If you are, we advise bringing motion sickness remedies or medication with you.

PLEASE NOTE:  We regret that this Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Likewise, we regret that we're unable to provide individual assistance to guests with walking difficulties or other personal needs.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director who accompanies your trip is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

The weather in Italy is temperate and unpredictable. Generally, spring and fall average high temperatures range from 55 to 75°F (13 to 24°C) and summer high temperatures range from 75 to 85°F (24 to 29°C). Rain falls evenly throughout the year in Venice, but more seasonally in Rome and Sorrento, where summers are dryer than winters. Venice experiences very high humidity, with hot weather in July and August. Due to its location on the Adriatic coast, Venice often experiences thunderstorms and rain showers which, particularly in spring and autumn, tend to cause flooding, known as the 'acqua alta'.

To read about current weather conditions, we suggest you log on to the Internet website by clicking here.

What To Pack

Bringing the right clothing for your trip is important – we've partnered with Necessary Gear who provide an "easy-to-use, one-stop shop" for your Tauck travel needs, specifically selected for this trip. Click here to visit their site .

When packing for your trip to Italy, it is important to keep in mind the time of year you are traveling and the current weather conditions for that time. The climate of northern Italy ranges from Alpine near Switzerland to continental along the Po River to Venice. Your journey is designed with leisure in mind. Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is adaptable and allows for layering. Generally, during the day, casual, comfortable, cotton clothing is recommended. Cool weather at higher elevations or at night will require warmer, layered clothing.

In Europe, especially in finer restaurants, it is generally customary to dress somewhat formally. Slacks or a dress for women and a jacket for men are acceptable dining attire. It is advisable to avoid wearing jeans, sneakers or shorts for dinner. You may also wish to dress up a bit for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, but certainly be comfortable.

Most Catholic churches in Italy require that your knees and shoulders be covered when you enter, even during the hot days of summer. You will find a hair dryer located in your hotel guest room. By law in Italy, irons and ironing boards are not made available to guests at hotels. Valet laundry and dry cleaning services are available for a fee.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your trip to northern Italy:

  • Casual daytime wear – shorts, slacks, long and short-sleeved shirts
  • An optional jacket and tie for men
  • Casually elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen, hat
  • A light sweater or jacket for higher elevations or a breezy night
  • Binoculars (7x50 preferably)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera, lenses, batteries, memory cards and chargers
  • Lightweight, comfortable, sturdy walking shoes that have already been broken-in
  • Travel alarm clock/cell phone with alarm function (many hotels do not have clocks in the rooms)
  • Rain poncho and collapsible umbrella
  • Reusable zipper-lock bags or other waterproof bags
  • Daypack for camera equipment
  • Sundries and toiletries that may be difficult to find en route
  • Copies of your travel documents that should be secured in the safe in your hotel room while traveling
