“…The amazing thoroughbreds entered their stall. Jockeys clambered onto their colts. As they were trained superbly, for the oncoming derby. While over the loudspeaker the narrator spoke. Calling out numbers for only who was there.Consider a victory and the triple crown.Ready to gain-gain an inch of ground.Thoroughbred racing was the name of the game…” The Derby Poem By Kim Robin Edwards

There is nothing like seeing a Kentucky Derby thoroughbred racehorse up close and personal at Churchill Downs. These magnificent animals are real live pieces of priceless art, and watching them run the track at Churchill Downs is a truly magical experience. The beauty and valiant spirit of the thoroughbreds happily brings tears to my eyes.

Churchill Downs

Louisville, Kentucky , home to the famous Churchill Downs, hosts the Kentucky Derby each May. This event, known as “the most exciting two minutes in sports,” has been a hit since 1875! Churchill Downs is named after Samuel Churchill, a big deal in Kentucky history. The Derby itself draws around 170,000 fans, but other races here are way more chill, with smaller crowds and lower prices. The place is huge, covering 147 acres and can pack in over 150,000 fans on Derby Day. The track is a mile long, and there’s also a 7/8 mile grass track inside. The iconic Twin Spires top the grandstands, making them a symbol of the track and the Derby. You can tour the grounds, track, clubhouse, and stables, and the Kentucky Derby Museum offers cool tours like breakfast, bourbon, and after-hours adventures!

Kentucky Derby Museum

Churchill Downs is home to the amazing Kentucky Derby Museum, which draws nearly a quarter-million visitors annually. With a general admission ticket, you can explore two floors of exhibits about the Derby’s origins, jockey life, and the art of racing. A 30-minute guided tour takes you through the track’s history, and you might even catch horses training. The highlight? A 360-degree cinema showing “The Greatest Race,” a tear-jerking documentary about the Derby. Our favorite part was learning about every stage of a Thoroughbred’s life, from birth to the big race, with photos and personal items from jockeys and trainers.

Things to See and Do at the Kentucky Derby Museum

If you’re a fan of the Kentucky Derby or just interested in learning more about its history and significance, a visit to the Kentucky Derby Museum in Louisville is a must. These interactive exhibits are just a few of the experiences you can enjoy at the Kentucky Derby Museum. Here are some highlights:

Interactive Exhibits

The Kentucky Derby Museum features several interactive exhibits that allow visitors to engage with the history and culture of the Kentucky Derby. Here are some of the interactive exhibits you can experience at the museum:

  • The Starting Gate: This exhibit allows visitors to experience what it’s like to be a jockey at the Kentucky Derby. Visitors can mount a replica of a racehorse and experience the sounds and sights of a race start.
  • The Winner’s Circle: In this exhibit, visitors can take photos with a replica of the Kentucky Derby trophy and the winning jockey’s silks.
  • The Finish Line: This exhibit offers a photo opportunity for visitors to recreate the iconic photo finish of the Kentucky Derby. Visitors can stand in front of a green screen and have their photo taken as if they are crossing the finish line.
  • It’s My Derby: This interactive exhibit allows visitors to design their own Kentucky Derby hat or bow tie and then see it displayed in a virtual fashion show.
  • Sound and Light Show: This exhibit uses cutting-edge technology to recreate the sights and sounds of the Kentucky Derby. Visitors can watch as horses race across the screen and feel the thunderous sound of hooves on the track.
  • The Horseshoe Theater: This exhibit features a 360-degree theater where visitors can watch a film, “The Greatest Race”, which is about the history of the Kentucky Derby and its impact on American culture. This is a very moving film… bring tissues!

Historical Artifacts

The Kentucky Derby Museum has a collection of historical artifacts related to the Kentucky Derby and the sport of horse racing. Here are some of the notable historical artifacts on display at the museum:

  • Derby Winner’s Trophies: The museum has a collection of Kentucky Derby winner’s trophies dating back to 1915. These trophies are made of gold and feature an engraved image of a thoroughbred racehorse. You can see up close the iconic rose garland that is presented to the winning horse.
  • Jockey Silks: The museum has a collection of jockey silks worn by famous riders in the Kentucky Derby. These silks are brightly colored and feature unique designs to help fans identify horses during the race.
  • Racing Saddles: The museum has a collection of racing saddles, including a saddle worn by the legendary jockey Eddie Arcaro during his Kentucky Derby victories in 1952 and 1958.
  • Artifacts from Famous Horses: The museum has artifacts related to famous horses, including a horseshoe worn by Secretariat during his record-breaking 1973 Kentucky Derby victory. See more about Secretariat below.
  • Racing Programs: The museum has a collection of racing programs dating back to the early years of the Kentucky Derby. These programs offer a glimpse into the history of the race and the people and horses who competed in it.
  • Historical Photographs: The museum has a collection of historical photographs that document the history of the Kentucky Derby and horse racing. These photographs feature famous horses, jockeys, and trainers, as well as behind-the-scenes shots of the track and stables.

Secretariat

Did you know that Secretariat, the most superior of all Thoroughbreds, won the Triple Crown? In 1973 he won the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes! You probably knew that, though! However, did you know he still holds the record for the fastest Thoroughbred ever? Interestingly, when Secretariat passed away in 1989 at the age of 19, a necropsy revealed that his heart was twice the size of other horses… 22 pounds! The size of his heart supplied his body with extra oxygen and better blood circulation, making for very powerful muscles. This explains why he was such a phenomenal athlete.

Cheap Airline Deals

One more interesting fact about Secretariat is that he was buried “whole”. When most winning horses die, only their head, heart and hooves are buried because they are just so big! Read more interesting facts about Secretariat on Wikipedia .

The Grounds

After you’ve seen inside the museum, walk outside to see where all of the excitement happens. Your general admission provides a tour guide to lead you through the grandstands to the rail of the dirt track where the Thoroughbreds race. You may even get lucky enough to see the Thoroughbreds working out on the track.

While standing at the rails, turn around and get a glimpse of the iconic Twin Spires, probably the most recognized image in the world of Thoroughbred racing. The Spires were built in 1895 atop the grandstand. The grounds and building have undergone some renovations, and continue to do so. However, the Twin Spires will remain till the end of time.

Note : When we visited in October 2022, there was major construction happening, so we couldn’t get near the Spires. You may want to wait to visit until construction is completed.

Before leaving the grounds of Churchill Downs, stop by to visit Mighty Aristides, or “Ari”. This is a miniature horse what was born in 2020. He is only 30″ tall, and he’s adorable! Visiting him is free, by the way. So, even if you don’t pay the entry fee to the Museum you can visit Ari.

Planning on Attending the Kentucky Derby or Other Special Event?

The Kentucky Derby is not the only race run at Churchill Downs. They host three meets a year. In the Spring there is one meet that begins a week before the Kentucky Derby, and continues until early July. Then the Kentucky Derby is on the first Saturday in May, with the Kentucky Oaks race on the Friday before the Derby. The Kentucky Derby Museum also hosts a variety of special events throughout the year, including Derby Day celebrations, summer camps for kids, and bourbon tastings. Check the museum’s website for a calendar of upcoming events.

Tip from our guide : On Kentucky Derby Day tickets can cost over $10,000 to hobnob in the special box seats with the likes of Tom Brady, Jason Aldean and Bobby Flay. However, if you want to sit in those special seats for only about $40, attend ANY other race!

The museum is open year-round and offers a range of exhibits and activities, so you can still learn about the history and culture of the Kentucky Derby even if you can’t attend the race.

Additionally, if you’re interested in seeing the horses train, then you may want to visit Churchill Downs during the early morning hours when the horses are most active. Typically, the best time to watch the horses train is from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. daily, except on race days when the schedule may vary.

How Long Should You Spend at the Kentucky Derby Museum

The amount of time you should spend at the Kentucky Derby Museum depends on how much you want to see and experience. On average, visitors spend about 1-2 hours exploring the museum’s exhibits and activities.

If you are interested in learning about the history and culture of the Kentucky Derby and want to see all of the exhibits, plan on spending at least 2 hours at the museum. This will give you enough time to watch the 18-minute film “The Greatest Race,” explore the interactive exhibits, and check out the gift shop.

Estimated Budget

The estimated budget for visiting the Kentucky Derby Museum and Churchill Downs can range from $20-$50 per person for a basic visit, while a more in-depth experience with tours and dining can cost upwards of $100 per person. However, keep in mind that prices can vary depending on the time of year and specific events taking place, so it’s always a good idea to check current prices before planning your budget.

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

Review of the Week

One of the Highlights of our travels. We got a tour of the grounds, walked through the paddock to the edge of the track and got to stand in the Winner's Circle. The museum itself is wonderful and between it and the tour guide it was very informative. Plus my wife got to enjoy a mint julep in the bar afterwards.

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Rest assured that you will be taken great care of on one of our Moscow tours. Express to Russia has a fully staffed office in Moscow that will help to make your visit fun, informative and unforgettable. Please remember that of all these tours are private and can be adjusted to your taste. You can add, replace or skip some sights; you can add more days to the package or cut the tour short. Our specialists will be glad to help you create the tour of your dreams!

Novodevichy Convent, Moscow

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Kremlin in the times of Ivan III

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you.
