Travel Backpack

Travel Backpack

A travel backpack is one of the easiest ways to keep everything they need at hand (purse, wallet, phone, keys, technology, passport, you name it) safe in one place. This backpack is not only perfectly compartmentalized to hold their laptop and other belongings, but it also opens from the top, giving the feel of a tote without having to carry it on one shoulder.

Travel Blanket and Pillow

Sure, they could bring a blanket from home, but it certainly isn’t as compact as a travel one — and does it zip up to double as a pillow? I didn’t think so.

Seriously, a travel blanket is truly game-changing, even on short trips with multiple people. They never know who will want the AC blasting while they're cold, so it’s always best to be prepared.

Laundry Bag

Laundry Bag

This compact laundry bag is especially important if your recipient is the type of traveler who lives out of their suitcase for the duration of the trip.

Travel Bottles

Travel Bottles

Since traveling with glass bottles is risky, and buying individual travel-size products can get expensive quickly, having reusable silicone travel containers is definitely the best option.

This travel essential is also much more environmentally friendly than buying TSA-approved products in plastic bottles every time they go on a trip. Saving money and the environment is definitely a win-win.

Travel Shoe Bags

Travel Shoe Bags

Perhaps one of the few downsides to trekking around a new city, state, or even country is taking those dirty shoes off and packing them away with your clothes. Safe to say that nobody wants the dirt and germs from the bottom of their feet to rub all over their otherwise clean items!

These shoe bags are the perfect travel essential for keeping your recipient's filthy soles off their silky drawers when packing before or after a trip.

Packing Cubes (6 Pieces)

Packing Cubes (6 Pieces)

Thankfully, the Cut Shop team has traveled far and wide, and has picked up a few tips, tricks, and essentials for packing well. Regardless of whether it’s a quick weekend escapade or a whole month abroad, here are the 39 best travel essentials worth taking along, listed according to the length of time spent away from home .

For Overnight Trips

Whether you’re only traveling ten minutes away for a staycation or venturing to a nearby city for a day, overnight trips can be just as challenging to pack for as longer ones. Our best tip is try to be strategic about stowing all the necessities in a larger tote ba g.

iMangoo Protective Cable Organizer Case

Keep all your chargers and cords organized and untangled in one place. This little case makes sure you can actually find what you are looking for, especially in the depths of a big bucket-shaped bag.

Hill House Home The Ellie Nap Dress

The Nap Dress is comfortable enough for any road trip or train ride or even to sleep in. You really can’t go wrong — it’s like wearing your pajamas but still looking totally presentable. We particularly like the wrinkle-resistant navy dress for easy wear on the road.

Baggu Go Pouch Set

This three-pack of pouches might be one of The Cut Shop ream’s favorite purchases. Perfect for everyday use, the pouches are great for housing everything from makeup to dirty clothes to receipts. We always have one in our bags, no matter if we’re leaving the house for a night, an hour, or a whole week.

July Everyday Garment Tote

Perfect for event-specific travel, this tote doubles as a garment bag, protecting those special-occasion outfits. It has just enough space to also pack a pair of shoes you do not want to commute in.

Saie Slip Tint Dewy Tinted Moisturizer SPF 35 Sunscreen

One of the best tinted moisturizers out there, this option from Saie offers hydration and some SPF and will give you light coverage with a dewy glow. When you can’t bring your entire medicine cabinet, this is a great option that combines a bunch of products in a multistep routine.

HoodHealth Stainless Steel

Because hydration is always important, especially when you’re traveling.

Leeshine Ice Roller for Face and Eyes

Just because you’re not doing your skin-care routine in your bathroom at home doesn’t mean your skin should suffer. This ice rollers will fit perfectly in your toiletry bag and come in handy first thing in the morning.

Emi Jay Big Effing Clip

Sometimes on those quick trips, we push washing our hair an extra day (or three) so we can leave all our heat tools at home. With some dry shampoo and a cute hair claw , no one has to know.

Weekend Trips and Excursions

Whether you are heading out of town for a wedding, trying to get away for a little R&R, or traveling for work, when it comes to packing a weekender or a smaller suitcase, organization is key.

Béis The Weekend Duffel Bag

There are so many options out there for weekender bags, but this water-repellent tote from Béis ticks all our boxes including the trolley pass-through pocket to attach to your suitcase and save your shoulders. This one is just over $100.

Guanda Car Vent Phone Mount

Most of the time, travel is associated with flying, but whether by choice or not, sometimes the trip involves hours of car time. A phone mount changes the game on a long road trip and is definitely safer.

Comrad Nylon Knee High Socks

For those longer flights where you are in a confined space and not moving around as much (looking at you, window-seat fliers), compression socks can help reduce swelling and discomfort in the legs and feet.

Loop Quiet Earbuds

Weekend trips can sometimes mean a jam-packed itinerary, so when you want to sleep, you want to snooze uninterrupted. Enter Loop, a reusable silicone earplug that allows you to get the ultimate fit (it comes in four sizes) so you can get in that power nap.

Le Specs Outta Love Sunglasses

Forgetting your sunglasses on vacation, especially when headed somewhere sunny, is a rookie mistake, which is why this pair from Le Specs is perfect to just keep in your weekend bag so you are never without.. They’re stylish, sturdy, and under $70 , in case you end up losing or breaking them.

Cadence Build Your 6 Bundle

Normally, travel containers are not the most stylish or multifunctional. But these Cadence capsules are both of those things. Unlike traditional travel containers, these can be used for anything from storing pills and skincare products to necklaces and hand cream. Plus, you can design your own set to include different labels and colors

Everlane the Relaxed Oxford Shirt

You can never go wrong with a classic button-up . It’s a must-have for any trip, especially a weekend one when space is limited. Wear it on its own, with a dress or pants, or as a bathing suit cover-up.

Tower 28 SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray

The Tower28 spray is our skin-care savior , and if you’re looking to pack minimally for weekend trips, this needs to be in the toiletry bag. Perfect for sensitive skin, it’s multifunctional, and a spritz delivers a refreshing dose of hydration and soothes stressed-out skin.

Kindle Paperwhite

Not only do books take up valuable real estate in a carry-on, they add a bit of weight too. A Kindle is so low profile and light that we do not even think twice about tossing it in our bag. It also saves us time doing the math on how many books we should be bringing on a trip because our next read is just a Wi-Fi connection away.

Anywhere From Five Days to a Week and a Half

A full-fledged trip that still limits you to a carry-on may be the most difficult to pack for. Europe,Cabo, our parents’ house, it’s all about making the most of the room you have, even if you can’t help but pack all your sunglasses , expensive skin care, and cute outfits.

Reformation Fantino Cashmere Collared Cardigan

This cashmere cardigan is amazing on its own or as a layering piece in case you get chilly en route or in your hotel room. When you’re packing a carry-on, the more pieces you have that you can wear multiple different ways, the better.

Dagne Dover Remi Glasses Case

Sometimes you just can’t decide which sunglasses to bring, especially if you are going somewhere extra-sunny. This protective case from Dagne Dover allows you to bring three pairs in a very compact and convenient case that is easy to hang up when you get to your final destination.

Away Bigger Carry-On

There is a reason you can’t travel without seeing one of these suitcases. It fits in the overhead bin of most major U.S. airlines and allows travelers enough room to store all their belongings while remaining light, sturdy, and sleek. Plus, it comes in seven attractive colors and has a USB external battery for those extra-long travel days. It is an essential for the majority of trips you will probably take.

Calpak Packing Cubes 5-Piece Set

We love using packing cubes when we need to keep a duffel bag from becoming total chaos or for just staying organized when we’re traveling somewhere where we will be doing a wide range of activities that require very different wardrobe options. These packing cubes from Calpak are cute and will help bring some order to a carry-on.

Aesop Resurrection Rinse-Free Hand Wash

Whether you are in the window seat and do not want to disturb your neighbors to wash your hands or need to do a quick clean after pumping gas on a road trip, having some sort of hand sanitizer while traveling is a good idea. This one from Aesop obviously smells amazing.

Baggu Packable Sun Hat

Senior writer Sangeeta Singh-Kurtz swears by bringing this foldable sun hat no matter the amount of time you plan to spend in the sun. It packs up so small, it’s easily justifiable to toss in your bag. If nothing else, it’s cute for a photo op or two.

Two Weeks or Longer

Uniqlo Wide-Fit Pleated Pants

Wearing trousers on a plane not only saves room in your suitcase but also makes you feel more put-together on the go. These comfy but tailored pants from Uniqlo can be worn casually or dressed up, making them the perfect pair to travel in for long periods.

Merit Flush Balm Cream Blush

A two-in-one product that is perfect for face and lips is a godsend on the road, and this Merit lightly tinted balm is highly rated. It is the perfect product to throw in your bag for when you want to do a real quick touch-up, no matter where you are. Not to mention it’s one of our senior shopping editor’s favorite cream blushes .

Rimowa Classic Check-In L

The pinnacle of traveling well comes down to one word: Rimowa. The cases are classic, luxurious, and durable, though definitely a splurge. If you’re traveling for long stretches of time, and often, they can be worth the price point.

Wild One Travel Carrier

Pets under 20 pounds are allowed to fly in a carrier under the seat in front of you, and this stylish option from Wild One opens into a bed so your pet can relax at the gate before you both board.

4PCS Refillable Travel Perfume Spray Bottles

Most fragrances do not come in a three-ounce bottle, and it can be quite a risk to send a glass bottle in your checked bag, so it might be safer to opt for something like this. Even when you are not traveling, these little cases are convenient to throw in a bag so that you always can carry around your favorite scent.

A Month or More

We’re way past suggesting hand cream and new luggage because, at this point, you’re practically moving to your destination. These are the things that upgrade you from a casual traveler to a pro and will make your longer flights and longer stays more comfortable

Bearaby Travel Napper

Carrying an extra six pounds might seem a bit excessive, but if you’re on a long flight and you’re staying over a month in your new destination, you might as well be as cozy and comfortable as possible. This travel0size weighted blanket from Bearaby comes in its own duffel bag, so it can easily be your personal item or be checked in with no problem.

FunTouch Rechargeable Travel Makeup Vanity Mirror

Want to be able to still do full glam while you’re away? This rechargeable and slim travel vanity mirror will help your makeup look flawless no matter your lighting situation.

Twelve South AirFly Pro

You may have seen this on your TikTok FYP. It allows you to connect your Bluetooth headphones (hello, AirPod Maxes ) to airplane screens, so you can watch your favorite comfort movie or episode of Sex and the City without worrying about bringing a corded pair or needing to purchase those cheap plane headphones in the air.

Saatva Weighted Silk Eye Mask

Like a weighted blanket for your eyes, this eye mask is sleep enhancing (perfect for long flights and jumping through timezones) and made from super soft silk.

Tumi Just In Case Tote

Chances you’ll come back from vacation with more clothes than you went there with are high, so consider packing this foldable nylon tote to hold all your overstock.

Mejuri Travel Case

Travel with ease knowing that your necklaces won’t get tangled and all your earrings are safe and sound in one place.

Daily Pill Organizer

This pill case also came from our TikTok FYP and is small enough to fit in any purse, but has enough storage to hold all your medicine, vitamins, and supplements.

The travel essentials we’re most excited for in 2024

Whether your next trip involves a first-class ticket or a full tank of gas, here’s the gear—from featherlight binocs to sustainable bags—you should pack.

A rain jacket, sandals, first aid kit, solar panel, binoculars, hiking boots, battery, dog collar, packing cube, and suitcase against a bright blue background.

What do all successful travelers have in common? Often, it’s an arsenal of great gear. After all, what you pack can make a big difference when exploring the best of the world . For our annual Gear of the Year list, National Geographic travel editors searched far and wide for the coolest products to pack. We also asked experts—from pro cyclists to adventure photographers—what they look for in everything from bike racks to binoculars. Here’s what we’re most excited to take with us in 2024.

Our picks for the best travel essentials

Top travel essentials for your next trip, durable roller bag for tight spaces: cotopaxi allpa.

A purple Cotopaxi Allpa Roller Bag on a dark beige background.

Award-winning travel journalist Tim Neville has journeyed on yaks, buses, and “countless heaving boats” and says that when it comes to packs, “a water-resistant exterior, beefy zippers, and soft, tough sides are non-negotiable.”

The newest Cotopaxi Allpa has two sturdy wheels made to handle cobblestone streets, stairs, and other rough surfaces. Like earlier versions of the bag, it’s constructed of 100 percent recycled pre-consumer waste (extra materials from the manufacturing process) and features a split-case design and mesh compartments for intuitive organization.

Buy it now:   REI, from $350,   38L   (carry-on compatible) and   65L | Amazon, $349.99

100 percent recycled backpacks: Patagonia Black Hole Collection

Patagonia Black Hole Duffel 55 L on a dark gray background.

Patagonia’s popular duffel bag collection is now completely made from post-consumer recycled (used materials diverted from landfills) polyester ripstop that resists tearing. The Fair Trade Certified pieces still come with a weather-resistant TPU-film laminate coating, rendering them virtually indestructible. We like the addition of a new interior pocket for stashing smaller valuables, such as cords and keys. For even more convenience, look for a duffel with wheels rolling out in August. Available in multiple styles and sizes.

Shop the collection now:   Patagonia, $35-$419

GPS tracker/virtual fence dog collar: Halo Collar 3

Halo 3 GPS tracker collar and phone with map on an orange background.

Halo’s newest GPS tracking collar not only keeps tabs on dogs with a propensity to escape or wander, it also lets you set a virtual fence to keep them confined to a geographic area, such as a campsite. It takes time for pups to acclimate to the collar’s alerts, which vary from beeps to vibrations—but the Halo app comes loaded with training tips. Available in small and medium/large for dogs 20 pounds and up.

Buy it now:   Amazon, $699, plus a subscription starting at $5.99/month

Fast-drying wool base layer: Ibex Woolies Pro Tech

Ibex Women's Woolies Pro Tech Crew on an olive green background.

Ibex’s new collection (tops, bottoms, boxer briefs) is constructed from Nuyarn, purportedly the world’s first performance wool. It’s made from non-twisted fibers, enabling the wool to retain more of its natural properties, such as body temperature regulation. The company claims that this lets the fabric dry five times faster than conventional 100 percent, ring-spun merino wool. It also weighs 35 percent less and offers 35 percent more stretch.

Buy it now:   Ibex (Men’s), $115   |   Ibex (Women’s), $115

Recyclable rain jacket: Patagonia Boulder Fork

Green Patagonia Boulder Fork Rain Jacket on a blue background.

Patagonia has plenty of outerwear made from recycled material. This rain jacket, however, is the first from the 50-year-old company that you can recycle. We like the adjustable cuffs, hem, and hood (great for keeping extra dry) and the three zippered chest pockets, which give you plenty of places to stash your things. The sleek, not-too-boxy silhouette is an added bonus.

Buy it now:   Patagonia (Men's) $229   |   Patagonia (Women's), $229

Waterproof, sustainable hiking boots: Oboz Cottonwood

ten best travel essentials

This new boot, ideal for day hikes on uneven, wet terrain, is the Montana-based company ’s most sustainable yet. Both the low- and mid-profile designs incorporate at least 20 percent recycled, responsibly sourced materials by weight. Even better, Oboz’s “B-DRY” lining is designed to maximize waterproofing and breathability—top qualities to look for in hiking boots, especially for trekking through tropical regions or cruising around on Zodiacs.

Buy it now:   Zappos   (Men’s), $155   |   Zappos   (Women’s), $155

Featherlight binoculars: Swarovski Optik CL Curio

Swarovski Optik CL Curio Binoculars on a beige background.

Slightly larger than a deck of cards and weighing just 8.9 ounces, Swarovski’s Optik CL Curio binoculars are the lightest, most compact binoculars we’ve found—exactly what you want in the field. With a sleek, seamless bridge by industrial designer Marc Newson , they’re also pretty stylish. With 7x magnification, a 21mm effective objective lens diameter, 7.7° field of view, and 90 percent light transmission, you’ll be able to discern a border collie from a coyote at 100 yards away and count the cracks in the craters of the moon at night.

Buy it now:   Amazon, $899

Budget-friendly, feature-loaded binoculars: Nocs Field Issue

NOCS Field Issue on a blue background.

Birdwatchers on a budget will appreciate Nocs’ new Field Issue, which marries the high-quality optics of the Pro Issue with the size and durability of the Standard Issue . It’s ideal for an off-road adventure when you want a super-wide, crisp view in a variety of lighting conditions. Like all the company’s binoculars, this mid-size (it weighs 16.7 ounces) pair is waterproof and fog-proof. But unlike other models, it features the brand’s finest central focusing. While it comes with a cleaning cloth and strap, consider upgrading to a harness to prevent it from awkwardly swinging around your neck.

Buy it now:   Nocs Provisions, $175

Carry-on that converts into a table: PROPS

PROPS 22in bag in white on four supporting legs on an orange background.

This hard-side carry-on has fold-out legs that turn the suitcase into a footrest or a table for your laptop during layovers or travel delays. It’s great for small hotel rooms without luggage racks. The built-in compression packing system and space-saving clamshell opening holds a surprising amount for a 22-inch bag. Look for a 26-inch model in October 2024.

Buy it now:   Magellan’s, $329

Super grippy water sandals: Teva Hydratrek

ten best travel essentials

Inspired by tree frogs, Teva’s latest sandal is built so that a maximum amount of surface area on the outsole stays in contact with the ground. Extra texturing on the top sole helps wet feet stay put, while the quick-dry, traceable recycled webbing helps with durability. An added bonus for light packers: These are water sandals you can also hike in.

Buy it now:   Zappos   (Men’s), $85   |   Zappos   (Women’s), $85

Robust, fast charger: Anker Prime Power Bank 250W

Anker Prime Power Bank 250W on a dark gray background.

At 27,650 mAh, Anker’s newest model is packed with power. “At least 20,000 mAh is the sweet spot because it allows me to charge my phone four to five times and my laptop once or twice,” says Barry Hoffner, founder of the education nonprofit Caravan to Class , who relied on a power bank while taking public buses across more than 170 countries.

This new model takes 28 minutes to charge a 16-inch MacBook Pro to 50 percent—a big improvement from last year’s 140W model, which took 40. Yet, at 99.54 watt hours, it still falls under TSA’s 100-watt-hour limit for carry-on packing. Pairing and Bluetooth connectivity via the Anker app enables you to track it if you lose it.

Buy it now:   Amazon, $179.99

Portable solar panel: BigBlue SolarPowa 30 ETFE Camping Solar Panel Charger

BigBlue SolarPowa 30 against an olive green background

BigBlue’s latest travel-friendly solar panel is now made with an ETFE layer, a fluorine-based plastic that can withstand high temperatures. It also resists water, dust, corrosion, and stains. This model reportedly lasts twice as long as a traditional panel and folds to the size of a 14-inch laptop—which not only saves space, but also exposes less surface area to damaging elements.

Buy it now:   Amazon, $79.99

Endlessly customizable backpack: Osprey Archeon

Osprey Archeon backpack on an orange background.

Osprey’s new Archeon set lets you customize your pack via quick-release straps—ideal for when you’re trekking and don’t want to take your full 60L kit on shorter day hikes. Start with the foundational day pack and add accordingly. The chest rig, which straps over your shoulders like a BabyBjorn, maximizes versatility. You can wear it backward, forward, and around your waist like a fanny pack—just attach the day pack’s removable hip belt. Each piece sold separately.

Shop   the collection now:   Osprey, $50-$300

Padded storage cube: Away, The Protective Packing Cube (6L)

Away F.A.R. Padded Organizational Cube packed with sunglasses, binoculars, and cords on a blue background.

Part of Away’s outdoor-centric For All Routes (F.A.R.) collection, the sturdy 6L packing cube has extra padding and six customizable dividers for storing fragile items, like larger electronics or a small pair of binoculars. A removable shoulder strap lets you wear the cube as a crossbody bag when you need to transport just a few things from your suitcase. Plus, it’s made of recycled materials and ships in compostable packaging.

Buy it now:   Away, $72

Heavy-duty universal bike rack: Thule Epos

Thule Epos bike rack on a olive green background.

A good bike rack should have turn and brake signals, according to retired professional cyclist George Hincapie .

Thule’s newest model includes both signals, plus telescopic arms with pivoting cradles that let you attach any type of bike, even an e-bike weighing up to 60 pounds. It works on any car; in some cases with an easy-to-install hitch. We especially appreciate that it folds up and wheels away for storage. (It weighs just 38 pounds.)

Buy it now:   REI, $999.95   |   Amazon, $999.95

Dog harness/rescue sling: Fido Pro Panza

Panza Harness and Deployable Emergency Dog Rescue Sling on a light beige background.

Hiking in remote areas with your dog can be risky, especially since search and rescue often isn’t equipped for pups. Vets recommend it’s best to be prepared and to think in advance how you can get your dog out of a difficult situation. It’s also a great idea to pack a rescue harness. We like this newly patented harness because it converts into a sling that you can wrap around your dog without too much maneuvering. Included custom pads can save your shoulders over longer distances too. Fits most breeds 35-120 pounds.

Buy it now:   Backcountry, $139

Dog first aid travel kits: Wolf Republic First Aid Kit & Adventure Dog Medical Kit

Wolf Republic 76-piece kit First-aid kit on an orange background.

Having a dog-specific first aid kit can be especially handy while traveling, especially if you're doing adventurous or sporty activities. We love Wolf Republic’s loaded kit for longer trips and Adventure Ready’s compact one for short day hikes. Both come stocked with vet-approved must-haves including triple antibiotic spray, self-adhesive bandages, saline wash, and tweezers.

I'm a Travel Writer—I Don't Go Anywhere Without These 10 Items

From suitcases to sneakers, the go-to essentials when you’re always on the go.

suitcase

I’ve traveled to more than 40 countries in the past 20 years, visiting every continent except Antarctica (which is still on my bucket list!). From jetting off on far-flung adventures in Iceland to quick road trips to Palm Springs , I’ve made my fair share of packing mistakes—and I've learned from them. Now, whether I’m sipping Champagne in the French countryside or going on safari in Africa, here are the must-haves I don’t leave home without.

The Perfect Carry-On

When you’re flying thousands of miles every month, TUMI luggage is well worth the splurge. Its timeless design and top-tier functionality makes it a favorite of travel writers and jet-setters. The 19 Degree 22-inch carry-on is just as beautiful as it is durable and the smooth glide of double spinner wheels make it effortless to cruise through the airport. Opt for an aluminum hard-sided suitcase so you aren’t tempted to try to overstuff it, and organize your must-haves into packing cubes.

TUMI 19 Degree

Insanely Comfortable White Sneakers

While it's true that at most destinations, you can buy pretty much anything you didn’t pack, the one exception is really, really comfortable shoes. Since shoes are fairly heavy and take up a decent amount of space, packing just two to three versatile styles is key. No matter the destination, a timeless white sneaker is my first pick while packing. My Joyasol Paisley sneakers come with memory foam insoles that mold to your feet and are made from a luxe leather that can be dressed up or down.

Joyasol Paisley sneakers

I first started carrying around black duct tape to cover up those pesky little lights that are constantly glowing in hotel rooms. As a light sleeper, getting a room truly blacked out is the best way for me to ensure a good night's sleep. Soon, though, I started realizing how often tape came in handy for other issues: creating a temporary fix for a broken backpack strap, helping secure curtains that don’t fully close, or sealing up a crack in my hiking boots.

A Cozy Sweatshirt

The one item I wear more than any other on a trip is my go-to sweatshirt . Even in tropical climates, I end up cozying up with it on flights and the inevitable spots where the A/C has been cranked up. While it's easy to get more excited about the fashion-forward looks you’ll be packing, there is always a spot in my go-bag for a great sweatshirt or hoodie.

Tracksmith Crew - Amateur

Effortless Sunscreen

Almost any trip will entail far more time outside than I usually spend at home, even when I’m not at the beach. When I’m exploring the city instead of laying by the pool, it can be easy to forget to lather up with sunscreen or put on a hat . The Invisible Shield SPF 35 by Glossier applies like a serum, so it’s effortless to add to my morning routine when traveling. And since it's only 1 fl. oz., it tucks it into your carry-on within the TSA liquid requirements.

Glossier Invisible Shield

Well-Stocked Medicine Kit

You can get basic medications from nearly any city in the world, but when you’re sick or hurt, you don't want to have to trek to a drugstore. My essentials are Pepto Bismol, ibuprofen, Zicam, pseudoephedrine, antiseptic ointment, and bandages. I also swear by hemp CBD to help with sleep, sore muscles, and other typical travel ailments— High Falls Hemp has a great travel pack of tinctures.

Spare Sunglasses

The only item I lose more often than my phone charger when I’m traveling? Mysunglasses. (Pro tip: if you need a spare charger, ask at lost and found—they usually have a box full of forgotten chargers from past guests!) Now, I travel with an extra pair or two of folding sunglasses tucked away—they fold up super compact so they can fit into a small pocket. Keep them handy when getting off a red-eye to avoid the too-early glare of the sun off the tarmac.

Zenni Foldable Round Sunglasses

Smartwatch or Fitness Tracker

Some travelers swear by a smartwatch to help them keep their cell phones out of sight while on vacation—but I use it to track my health stats so I know when to rest and when to adventure. I used to come back from a trip feeling like I needed a vacation to recover. Now, my watch can tell me if my night’s sleep was disrupted so I can schedule an afternoon siesta. It tracks my Daily Readiness Score to let me know before I get worn out (or fighting off a cold!) so I can take an extra day of pure R&R… as if I need an excuse to lounge in a poolside cabana all day!

Google Pixel Watch

Versatile Shirt Dress

A classic cotton shirt dress is one of the most versatile items of vacation wardrobe since it can be styled so many different ways. Dress it up with statement jewelry, go casual with a denim jacket, or wear it open over a swimsuit as a cover-up.

The best travel accessories to pack on every trip

By Madison Flager

Image may contain Clothing Apparel Human Person Bag Handbag Accessories Accessory Hat and Sun Hat

Packing lists will vary based on where you're going and how long you're travelling for, but the best travel accessories can improve every trip. From tech gadgets to keep your electronics powered up and luggage accessories that ensure you're not hit with an overweight baggage charge, having the right gear means a smoother journey, every time. Below, we've rounded up 27 essential items to pack inside your carry-on bag , weekender , or checked luggage . Consider these the travel gear staples to bring on your next trip – and all your future holidays after that.

  • A trusted tote
  • A travel wash bag
  • Packing cubes
  • Jewellery case
  • Reusable travel bottles
  • Hydrating skincare products
  • A portable charger
  • A power adapter
  • A luggage scale
  • A way to find your luggage
  • An e-reader
  • A portable fan
  • A portable steamer
  • An eye mask
  • A neck pillow
  • A shawl or blanket
  • Hand sanitiser and wipes
  • A reusable water bottle
  • Snack containers
  • A passport holder
  • A back-up travel bag
  • An umbrella

1. A trusted tote

A tote bag is the ideal personal item. It's roomy enough to store all your odds and ends, and everything you'd want with you during a flight, and is usually pretty pliable, meaning you can squeeze it under the seat without taking up all of your foot room. Look for one with comfortable shoulder straps, should you overload it with snacks. A trolley sleeve is a nice feature, too, so you can slide it over your suitcase while cruising through the airport.

ten best travel essentials

2. A travel wash bag

A travel wash bag is key to staying organised — and avoiding spills in your luggage. We like these options from Away and Bagsmart for their water-resistant materials and ample space for your toothbrush and toothpaste, razor, soaps, and more. A hanging bag, like those below, also allows you to keep items tidy and off the bathroom counter.

3. Packing cubes

Don't underestimate the power of a good packing cube . Articles director Lale Arikoglu has waxed poetic about her love of Paravel's packing cubes (other editors are fans of Away's set ), which come in a range of sizes to store everything from bathing suits and socks to T-shirts.

4. Jewellery case

A rule to live by: never check your valuables, especially jewellery. Keep necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and rings safe and neatly organised inside a jewellery case. We like Monica Vinader's for smaller accessories; if you're packing sunglasses and watches, you'll want something slightly bigger, like this Smythson option.

ten best travel essentials

5. Reusable travel bottles

Rather than buy plastic travel-sized toiletries , get yourself a set of leakproof travel bottles that allow you to bring your at-home favourites on the go. They're great for storing toiletries and beauty products, and tubs can also be used to keep small items like jewellery or vitamins.

ten best travel essentials

6. Hydrating skincare products

Even if you're not the type of person with a multi-step in-flight skincare routine , a few basics can go a long way in keeping your skin happy and healthy after a long day of travel. Since hand sanitiser remains a travel essential, a hand balm to apply once or twice a day is equally important to keep them moisturised. Aesop's smells incredible, and will last for several trips to come — a little bit of the thick, creamy balm goes a long way. Don't forget a hydrating lip balm, either.

ten best travel essentials

7. A portable charger

There's nothing like a dead battery to slow down a trip. Keep all your accessories charged up with a power bank — Anker is our favourite, but iWalk's mini charger is a great option if you're short on space.

ten best travel essentials

8. A power adapter

For international travel, a power adapter is a must to make sure you can get devices charged up in the airport and your hotel room. Apple's World Travel Adapter Kit comes with seven AC plugs with prongs that fit into different electrical outlets around the world, and each one is labelled with the regions they are compatible with. (As for compatibility, it works with Apple USB-C power adapters; MagSafe and MagSafe 2 power adapters; 10W, 12W, 30 and 35W USB ports; and portable power adapters.) We also recommend this Bluetooth converter , which lets you use your regular cordless earbuds to watch a movie in flight.

ten best travel essentials

9. Headphones

Whether the plan is to listen to music, watch a movie, or just drown out noisy neighbours, most of us won't board a plane without headphones. Make sure you have your go-to on hand, plus a pair of corded earbuds (if you don't have one of these Bluetooth adapters ).

ten best travel essentials

10. A luggage scale

Give yourself some added peace of mind with a digital luggage scale; it’ll let you know how much damage your souvenirs did before arriving at the check-in counter on the way home.

ten best travel essentials

11. A way to find your luggage

Speaking of luggage, the Tile Pro and Apple AirTags can help locate lost bags (or wallets, or keys, depending on what you attach it to). In fact, a luggage tracker is one of the items contributor Harrison Pierce wishes he had when he began travelling full-time .

ten best travel essentials

12. An e-reader

Even travellers with a library full of books at home have to admit it: E-readers are an essential travel accessory for bookworms . They are so much lighter than even one paperback book, and let you bring as many options as you want along for the ride.

ten best travel essentials

13. A portable fan

If you're headed somewhere warm, or just tend to run hot, do yourself a favour and pack a portable fan. Whether you choose a handheld option or one you can wrap around your neck, it'll give you the breeze you need whether you're in the back of a crowded bus or van, standing in line at Disneyland, or kicking back in a beach chair .

ten best travel essentials

14. A portable steamer

If you're travelling to a wedding or heading out on a business trip, you may want to bring a portable steamer along to make sure your formalwear looks its best after you take it out of your suitcase. Traveller contributor Erinne Magee put nine travel steamers to the test to find out which ones are the best options for travellers — below are two of her favourites.

ten best travel essentials

15. A tech kit

All of those tech items mean you're going to have plenty of charging cubes and cables to keep track of. Save space in your backpack — and save yourself the headache of digging through your bag — by keeping everything wrapped up in a tech kit like the ones below.

ten best travel essentials

16. An eye mask

For a comfortable journey at 30,000 feet — especially one where you hope to get some shut-eye —an eye mask is crucial. For more help sleeping, try the Bluetooth sleep headband recommended by US contributor Iona Brannon, which lets you listen to music or white noise without anything in or around your ears; in a pinch it can even double as an eye mask, she says.

ten best travel essentials

17. A neck pillow

Another comfort essential: a travel pillow . It can take some time to find the style you like best, and your pick might vary depending on whether you're in-flight or in a car. Two we like: The classic memory foam wraparound neck pillow, which can be tightened or loosened per your preference, and the innovative fleecy neck wrap recommended by commerce writer Charley Ward .

ten best travel essentials

18. Cosy socks

We love a good pair of compression socks to fight that pins-and-needles feeling that comes from sitting still for too long, be it on a long-haul flight  or a road trip . For those who prefer a cosier option, we recommend socks from Barefoot Dreams .

Ostrich Pillow, Compression Socks

19. Earplugs

When you need some peace and quiet, swap your noise-cancelling headphones in for earplugs. This set comes with multiple sizes, so you can find the right fit, and share with any family members you're travelling with.

ten best travel essentials

20. A shawl or blanket

For those who run cold, an oversized scarf will get plenty of use in transit, and can even double as a blanket. Opt for a quality material you can pack for years to come, like cashmere.

ten best travel essentials

21. Hand sanitiser and wipes

As for general wellness, hand sanitiser is a must — buy a set and drop one in all your most-used totes and sling bags so you're never without. Some biodegradable wipes are nice to have on hand too, especially if you're travelling with little ones .

ten best travel essentials

22. A reusable water bottle

Rounding out our collection of the best travel accessories are some odds and ends, like a good reusable water bottle, so you can stop buying overpriced bottles at the airport (and be kinder to the environment).

ten best travel essentials

23. Snack containers

If overpriced airport snacks aren't your jam, come prepared by filling reusable Stasher bags with popcorn, crackers, fruit, or whatever else you'd like in-flight before you leave your house. A reusable utensil set is another nice-to-have travel accessory that'll allow you to turn down the plastic cutlery you might be handed in the airport or elsewhere on the road. The spoon and chopsticks are particularly TSA-friendly (while utensils are technically allowed through security , it's at the discretion of the agent if they'll let plastic knives or forks).

ten best travel essentials

24. A passport holder

Also handy: a high-quality passport holder (bonus points if it has space to hold your credit cards) to keep your most important document protected. Aspinal's can be personalised with your initials for an added £20.

ten best travel essentials

25. A back-up travel bag

For trips where you plan to shop, something lightweight, like Paravel's Fold-Up Bag or Baggu's Cloud Bag , is a smart addition to your packing list. Stuff it with souvenirs on your way home, or use it for overnight or weekend trips within a longer holiday.

ten best travel essentials

26. A travel umbrella

Depending on your destination, a travel-size umbrella might be worth the space in your luggage. And if you're driving, tossing one in the backseat is a no-brainer. Contributor Claire Volkman tested out around a dozen options on our US sister site to determine which are the sturdiest and most compact. Shop two of her favourites, both available in the UK, below.

10 Best Travel Must Haves & Essentials for Every Trip!

10 Best Travel Must Haves & Essentials for Every Trip!

Take the guesswork out of packing and start with these travel essentials. From the obvious to the ingenious, discover the must-haves you'll need to ensure your trip is successful!

ten best travel essentials

If you're one of those people who procrastinate when it comes to packing, then you know how stressful packing at the last minute can get.

Chances are you always leave some or other travel essentials behind. Using a packing list is a total lifesaver when you're in a packing jam!

But even if you're the most organized traveler, figuring out exactly which travel essentials you need can be tricky. That's why I'm here to help...

After traveling so often, I've learned from firsthand experience which items are must haves in your luggage. Whether you're a digital nomad working and traveling or finally getting away on a relaxing vacation, you'll have things you won't want to leave home without.

Now these are somewhat subjective, but I'll do my best to cover must have travel items that, based on my experience, enhanced my travel experience!

10 Best Travel Must Haves for All Travel

I'll start with a list of travel essentials I feel will be beneficial to any traveler, no matter your travel style or purpose.

After that, I'll be more specific! On top of these 8 necessities for travel, I'll also give you my top travel items based on the type of traveler you are.

Let's dive in...

10. Compression Socks

Long gone are the days when compression socks were only for the elderly or those with specific medical conditions.

Today, they've become a universal travel essential, especially for those who find themselves sitting for extended periods. Long-haul flights or car rides, anyone?

Compression socks are designed to improve blood circulation, reduce leg swelling, and generally make your lower extremities more comfortable when you can't move around as much as you'd like.

They can make a world of difference in how you feel during and after your travels!

9. Weather-Appropriate Clothes

Weather-appropriate clothes are essential, but you'd be surprised how many people forget to check the weather forecast. The last thing you want to do is find yourself stranded in a foreign country with all the wrong clothes!

I once packed a suitcase full of summer clothes and bikinis on a trip to the south of Brazil, only to experience an entire week of cold rain. The struggle was real.

Before you pack, check the forecast and research the average temperatures for that time of year.

Pro tip: Always bring a bathing suit. You never know when you'll need one, even if you're going to a colder destination.

I'll list out a few of the top clothing necessities for vacation:

Waterproof Jacket

Pack a waterproof jacket and warm layers if it's raining or cold. The Switchback III Jacket from Columbia is a great travel essential to add to your wardrobe.

The rain jacket is lightweight and breathable while still being 100% waterproof. You'll be ready for anything from a drizzly day to a tropical downpour.

Plus, this is one of those nifty little travel essentials that rolls into a little pouch that can be kept in your pocket!

Versatile, Waterproof Shoes

I support trying to pack light—although that's not always the easiest feat. I find one thing I always overpack on is shoes...

So if I can find one pair of casual shoes that I can wear for multiple situations, I'll do that to decrease the number of shoes I'm packing.

An excellent choice that fits the bill is Vessi waterproof sneakers. They come in lots of different styles and colors. And after testing them out in rainy Vancouver, I can say for sure that they're 100% waterproof!

Once you read our Vessi review, you can use our discount code, PILOTPLANS, to purchase your pair!

Bathing Suit

As I mentioned, a bathing suit is one of the must have travel items on my list because even if I'm traveling to a cold destination, I often have the chance to wear a bathing suit. Whether I dip in the pool, relax in a hot tub, or cleanse myself using the sauna.

I tend to wear bikinis that will likely be accepted even in more conservative destinations. But, a stylish one-piece bathing suit is also a great option!

8. Headphones

Headphones are among the top must have air travel essentials for every vacation.

This is one of those items that I spend a bit more money on because durability and quality are essential in headphones!

One of the most popular ones is the Beats Studio3 Headphones , which will help you sleep like a baby on an airplane. A noise-cancelling pair of headphones can also help you in any noisy spot you may find yourself or to do work in a more crowded spot.

A pair of high-quality noise-canceling headphones really come in handy if you're staying in hostels during a backpacking trip , especially if you end up sharing a room with someone who snores.

Pair of black over-the-ear Beats

7. Emergency Kit

Accidents and emergencies happen. A little first-aid kit can be a real lifesaver in a foreign country or on an outdoor adventure.

You should carry band-aids, gauze pads, adhesive tape, and antiseptic wipes in your emergency kit. These are the vaacation must haves you should carry to deal with cuts and bruises.

Pain and headache relievers are also crucial to have on hand. Allergy medication is necessary if you get stuffy during weather changes or around dust and pets.

For tropical destinations, make sure to pack insect repellent . And remember the aftersun in case your sunbathing gets a little out of hand!

If you take any prescription meds, make sure you have enough for the whole trip, and always bring a little extra, just in case. Better safe than sorry!

emer

6. Specific Toiletries

This one may sound strange, but I've learned something after traveling to so many different places. There are some toiletries that are okay to buy abroad. But you should pack specific travel necessities in your luggage from home.

One thing is deodorant. I find that some countries have different deodorants that you won't be as comfortable with. Or it'll be super expensive. For instance, when I visited China, I hated the deodorant choices.

Now if you're a girl, I would also recommend bringing your own tampons. In many countries in Asia, it's extremely hard to find tampons. And if you do they're uncomfortable and overly expensive!

5. Toiletry Bag

Now that you know which travel toiletries you must pack from home, you'll also need a trusty toiletry bag.

Your toiletry bag is probably the most necessary of all the travel essentials. It's your primary source of hygiene, so you need to ensure it's practical and not stuffed with unnecessary items.

Along with the specific toiletries I mentioned above, you can also pack some of these toiletries if you're more comfortable bringing them from home:

  • Travel-size shampoo and conditioner
  • Travel toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Q-tips (they are way more necessary than we give them credit for).
  • Essential, everyday makeup
  • Mini travel hairbrush
  • Contact lens cases and solution, if needed
  • Sunscreen with decent SPF
  • Nail clipper or file

Make sure you bring a waterproof toiletry bag that's big enough to fit everything you need and offers easy access. There's nothing worse than rooting around for things every time you take a shower.

BAGSMART's toiletry bag is ideal because it's easy to find whatever you're looking for, easy to clean, and even has a hanging feature for when you reach your destination!

Alternatively, you could go with the uber-popular Gravel Travel Toiletry Bag .

Pro tip: In the days leading up to your trip, pay attention to the things you use and add them to your toiletry bag.

4. Small, Travel-Focused Wallet

You want to be practical and bring only travel essentials like your ID and credit cards. Investing in a nice, small wallet is a smart idea.

If not the smallest in size, make sure your wallet has features that are helpful when traveling like RFID blocking or the ability to hold your passport as well!

Smaller wallets are safer and easier to carry during the day, fitting into small bags and in your pockets out of sight from pickpockets.

3. Purse or Crossbody Sling

Sometimes traveling can mean an entire day outside, roaming the streets, and getting to know the place you're visiting. So it's essential to bring a practical and safe purse. You don't want to lug a backpack around every single day.

Bring a small bag that's hard to open, just in case you bump into pickpocketers in the busiest cities and streets. And let's face it—backpacks scream "tourist!".

If you're spending the day at the beach or picnicking at the park, a foldable bag is a stylish and practical way to carry everything you need. Since they fold into a small layer, you can easily pack them into your main luggage without too much space.

If you're going on more adventurous vacations, a crossbody sling is perfect for carrying all the travel essentials you'll need during the day.

Having it in front of you is ideal for keeping everything safe from prying fingers. The MOSISO Sling Backpack has smaller compartments you can hide your wallet and phone in.

2. Electronics: Travel Adapter & Portable Chargers

Aside from the normal electronics travelers carry, like a cell phone, tablet, or laptop, it makes sense to bring a few other electronic accessories.

Remember your charger unless you're willing to pay a fortune for one at the airport! And just as important is bringing the right adaptor.

Before traveling, research the plug types at your destination and ensure you have the correct adaptor. A universal adapter that works with many different plug types is a worthwhile investment.

Check for chargers before you leave the house, and bring them in your handbag so you can also charge your electronics at the airport. You can get portable chargers , perfect for trips where you spend a lot of time away from your accommodation.

1. Packing Cubes

I'm a complete mess when packing. I put my pants at the bottom of the suitcase, and sometimes I need to pull one pair out. Then my entire organizational system goes kaboom!

That's why packing cubes are my number 1 must have for travel. They're excellent because you can organize everything inside your suitcase in different sections without messing it all up in search of just one item.

I usually put pants and shirts inside one cube, dresses in another, underwear in another, and so it goes. Also, the packing cubes hold your clothes together compactly, making it much easier to fit everything in.

Best Must Haves for Travel as a Digital Nomad

Books are fantastic for those endless airport layovers and flights where you can't sleep. And of course, there's nothing better than lying on the beach or sitting at a café and spending time reading a good book.

Whether you're on a break from work or need to read some knowledge-based education books, getting a Kindle's a great idea.

It's an excellent investment since you'll be traveling a lot, and downloading a bunch of different books won't add any extra weight. The Kindle Paperwhite is a cute and compact device that will give you hours of reading pleasure.

I find that if I'm going on a short trip, I don't mind bringing a physical book, or 2, with me. But if I'm traveling to multiple destinations to work, then I find having an e-reader is truly a travel must have!

Woman reading chapter one of a book on a Kindle Paperwhite

Wireless Mouse

A mouse might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of travel essentials, but if you're a digital nomad, it's an absolute game-changer.

Trust me, using a touchpad for extended periods can be a pain, especially if you're used to the precision and comfort of a mouse.

Opt for a wireless mouse to make your life easier. They're compact, easy to pack, and can drastically improve your productivity. Working from cafes, coworking spaces, or even hotel rooms becomes much more manageable with a good wireless mouse by your side.

Brands like Logitech offer some fantastic, travel-friendly options.

Microfiber Towel

When you're on the go constantly, a microfiber towel is one of the most versatile items you can pack. You don't want to be rushing to your next work destination and need to worry about drying your towel!

These towels are lightweight, compact, and dry incredibly quickly. Whether you're hitting the gym, going for a swim, or need to dry off after an unexpected rain shower, having a microfiber towel on hand can be a lifesaver.

Not only are they practical for personal use, but they can also double as a makeshift tablecloth or even a seat cushion when you're working from various locations. Brands like Sea to Summit offer high-quality microfiber towels that come in various sizes.

Traveling Essentials for Budget Travelers

Sleeping mask.

A sleeping mask is a highly underrated little item for comfort both at home and while out traveling!

If you're light-sensitive and struggle to sleep in anything but pitch dark, a sleeping mask should be at the top of your travel essentials list.

This may not be as important if you stay in hotels all the time, but if you're a budget traveler staying in hostels, this is one of the travel must haves you'll want to pack for better sleep!

Talking about being to sleep better while traveling as a budget traveler, you'll also want to pick up a pair of earplugs. If you're in a loud party hostel or your bunkmates aren't very polite, you'll be forever grateful you packed earplugs.

My recommendation is to get the well-reviewed and surprisingly affordable EarPlanes . They're known to keep out sounds while being helpful if you suffer from sore ears on the airplane.

If you don't need earplugs that help with the airplane pressure, you can grab a less specific pair of earplugs !

Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is non-negotiable, especially when you're traveling and exploring new places. But buying bottled water can quickly add up and isn't great for the environment.

This is where a reusable water bottle comes in handy!

A quality reusable water bottle is a godsend for budget travelers frequenting hostels. Many hostels offer free water refill stations, meaning you can fill up your bottle and head out for the day without spending a dime on drinks.

Not to mention, having your own water bottle allows you to avoid the awkward social scenario of constantly asking for free water at cafes or restaurants.

Brands like Nalgene and Hydro Flask offer durable options that can last you through countless trips. You could also look into a collapsible water bottle if you need to save space.

Top Travel Necessities Essentials for Solo Travelers

Door & luggage locks.

For solo travelers, the importance of security can't be overstated.

Door and luggage locks become invaluable assets to secure your belongings and personal space. The reality is that even in seemingly safe environments, opportunities for theft or intrusion can exist.

A portable door lock can add a layer of security to your hostel or hotel room, making it nearly impossible for anyone to enter without your permission.

Similarly, luggage locks protect your valuables, especially in communal living spaces or while in transit.

If you're looking for a top travel item that'll last you a long time, brands like Master Lock and Pacsafe offer robust and travel-friendly locks.

Safety Alarm

Personal safety alarms are another travel essential for solo travelers.

These compact devices can emit a loud sound that can deter potential threats and attract attention in emergency situations. Easily accessible, you can clip them onto your bag or keychain.

If you find yourself in an uncomfortable or risky situation, simply activate the alarm to draw immediate attention. Brands like Sabre and Vigilant have a range of easy-to-use, effective safety alarms.

Portable Charger

I already mentioned a portable charger as part of the essential electronics for all travelers, but I think this travel essential is even more important for a solo traveler.

After all, the last thing any solo traveler wants is to have their phone die on them while navigating an unfamiliar city or capturing memories. A portable power bank can be an absolute lifesaver, ensuring your devices are always juiced up.

This is particularly important if you rely on your phone for maps, transportation, or emergency calls. Brands like Anker and Mophie offer reliable portable chargers that can recharge your phone multiple times before needing to be recharged.

Carry-on bag with usb ports.

If you value extra comfort and convenience while traveling, a carry-on bag with built-in USB ports can be a game-changer.

You won't need to scrounge for outlets at overcrowded airports anymore. Now, you can simply plug your phone or tablet into your carry-on suitcase while you're on the move.

These bags often come with various compartments that help you keep your travel essentials organized, which means less stress and a more enjoyable journey overall. Brands like Away and Travelpro offer stylish and functional options with this feature.

Neck Pillows

A quality neck pillow can make all the difference between a miserable long haul flight and arriving at your destination rested and ready to explore. That's why it's slowly become one of my air travel essentials...

But it wasn't always!

I used to think these were a gimmick. Back in the day they were basic and uncomfortable. Now there are options that offer proper neck and shoulder support, memory foam cushioning, and even built-in massagers.

Brands like Cabeau and Trtl offer innovative designs for travel pillows that focus on providing maximum comfort. I'm personally a fan of Cabeau's memory foam neck pillow!

Travel Credit Card

I know this is an unconventional "travel must have," but hear me out!

If you appreciate the finer things in life, a specialized travel credit card can add a layer of luxury to your trips.

Many travel credit cards include free checked bags, priority boarding, and access to airport lounges where you can enjoy free snacks, drinks, and Wi-Fi. Not to mention the points or miles that can be redeemed for future travels.

Cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve in the US or American Express Platinum internationally are popular among comfort-seeking travelers.

10 Travel Essentials for Men To Make any Trip in 2024 Easier

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. Any products or services put forward appear in no particular order. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation.

Travel essentials for men take on all shapes, sizes, and forms. Ranging from luggage to travel clothing to must-have personal items, the top travel essentials ensure you have everything you need to stay comfortable and, more importantly, look good on the go. But does every trip call for the same travel essentials?

Not necessarily.

What I’ve found over the past five years of traveling full time is that travel essentials vary from person to person. Many men may need to pack a foil travel shaver , while others are fine with a plastic hotel razor. Some guys can’t survive a flight without a travel pillow, while other dudes just sleep on a sweatshirt .

Regardless of personal preference, I’ve rounded up the best travel items that prioritize function over anything. When it’s time to pack your bags, these are the top ten travel essentials I recommend for any man.

Key Takeaways

After asking all my frequent flyer friends and reviewing what those on the internet had to say (and, as always, it’s a lot!) I’ve come up with this list. In terms of the top travel essentials for men , you’ll be hard pressed to find an item as practical as a sturdy backpack. The Tropicfeel Shell Backpack expands to suit different trip lengths, making it a versatile packing option for the rest of your gear.

It’s also worth investing in a travel wallet to stay organized and noise canceling headphones , which are a must-have for long journeys.

Keep reading to discover all of the other items I deem the best travel essentials for men.

  • Buying Considerations

Why You Should Trust Us

Final verdict, 1. best overall: tropicfeel shell backpack.

Why It’s Great: The Tropicfeel Shell backpack is a travel essential you’ll take on every trip – near or far, long or short. It’s one of the most practical backpacks on the market, and I’m an especially big fan because the weatherproof body transforms from 20 to 42 liters without batting an eye.

Because of its versatile nature, it’s ideal for any kind of travel, whether a quick road trip to a neighboring state or a journey spanning several continents. It has multiple attachment points all over the bag, and even a packable kangaroo pouch on the bottom for travel shoes or wet clothes. Use this in place of weekender bags or duffels for men to keep your hands free.

How to Use It: Outfitted with unparalleled organization, there’s space for everything in the Shell backpack, including a designated 17” laptop sleeve. There’s a chest and hidden hip belt to balance heavy loads, and to really make the most of this comfy backpack, pair it with accessories like Tropicfeel’s wardrobe system, the magnetic toiletry bag, or a camera cube.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: While this backpack has lots to love, it can be improved with more padding on the straps and hip belt to increase comfort.

2. Best Travel Wallet: Lundi Leather Passport Wallet

Why It’s Great: As someone who travels internationally multiple times a year, a passport wallet is one of the top travel essentials. Sure, it protects your passport, but also has room for credit cards, a boarding pass, and receipts. This option from Lundi is my personal favorite because instead of having a bifold design that makes the passport hard to get to, it has a slip pocket with a pull strap for quick access. No more fiddling with your cover in the immigration line.

How to Use It: Load up this supple leather wallet with your passport in the main compartment and cards in the front slots. Pull gently on the cotton tab to access your passport, which will slide it up. When you receive your boarding pass, tuck it into the back pocket for safekeeping.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: The only dealbreaker with this item is it probably isn’t necessary unless you’re traveling internationally. The large center pocket is great for holding travel documents, but you can likely stick with your regular wallet if you’re traveling domestically or by land.

3. Best Headphones: Bose QuietComfort Noise Cancelling Headphones

Why It’s Great: Out of all the headphones on the market, these are the top travel essentials for men. They have a noise canceling option, unmatched sound quality, and Bluetooth for cordless listening. However, what really makes them great is when you’re ready to throw on a movie, there’s a cable that allows you to connect them to non Bluetooth compatible devices (hint: in-flight entertainment systems).

How They Feel: As far as comfortable headphones go, these are top tier. The over the ear design is heavily padded, giving solid cushioning for the ears without sacrificing sound quality. I’m pretty sensitive to pressure on my head and I’ve found that these are light enough to prevent discomfort, even if worn over a long period of time.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: These Bose QuietComfort headphones are an older model. But as someone who has tried the most recent pair, this earlier rendition reigns supreme in terms of comfort and sound.

4. Best Laptop Case: Comfyable Slim Laptop Sleeve

Why It’s Great: When it comes to travel essentials, slim is superior. This laptop sleeve will keep a MacBook safe from harm without taking up precious space in a bag. The faux leather design is sleek and stylish, while the soft felt interior protects the computer from damage while on the go.

How to Use It: This laptop sleeve couldn’t be any easier to use. Simply slip the computer inside and tuck it in your bag. There are no niggly straps or buttons, making it easy to access your laptop as soon as you need it.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: If you’re looking for extra protection, you may want to opt for a more robust computer case with additional padding or a hard shell. This case is also for Mac laptops, rather than PCs.

5. Best Travel Razor: Manscaped The Handyman

Why It’s Great: No, you do not need to take your entire shaving set up with your traveling. Yes, there is a worthy alternative. As far as travel essentials go, you’ll likely get the most use out of this Manscaped shaver than anything else on this list. With a compact design specially created for portability, this is the mobile man’s best friend. If you’re traveling for business, this is one essential you won’t want to forget (together with your travel size cologne as well).

How to Use It: Use this foil shaver the same way you would any other electric razor. It’s waterproof so you can rinse off any stray hairs, and has an hour of run time before needing a USB-C charge. When you finish your grooming, snap the magnetic cover on and throw it back in your bag.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: Like most electric razors, it’s a bit finicky and can be a bit loud. If you have sensitive skin, you may experience some redness after use.

6. Best neck pillow: Huzi Infinity Pillow

Why It’s Great: It’s about time the classic neck travel pillow got an upgrade. I love the Infinity Pillow because it can be used in many different ways to sleep on the go. It’s lightweight and the best headrest for long rides, flights, or grimey hotel rooms.

How it Feels: Made from bamboo fabric, this pillow is super breathable and highly adjustable to be exactly what you need it to be throughout your travels. Whether you wrap it around your neck or lean against it in a window seat, it’s ultra plush and supremely comfortable. No matter how you use it, it feels a whole lot better than the traditional U-shape headlock.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: The Infinity Pillow is definitely pricer than classic neck pillows. But you can’t put a price tag on a comfortable headrest. Trust me on this one.

7. Best Manicure Set: Aceoce Travel Manicure Set

Why It’s Great: Nice nails on the go are a must, especially if you’re traveling for business. God forbid you extend a nail bitten hand to a client… Yikes. This manicure set is among the best travel essentials because it’ll keep you looking sharper than a hangnail. It has seven tools in a TSA approved compact case and even includes facial care tools in addition to the nail set.

How to Use It: Whip out this bad boy any time your nails or eyebrows need a little TLC. There are two sized clippers – one for fingers and one for toes, in addition to a nail cleaner and a file. If your brows are in need of a touch up, use the tweezers to shape and the scissors to give them a trim.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: Some reviewers report that the nail clippers aren’t as sharp as some others, but they do the trick in a pinch (literally).

8. Best Dopp Kit: Purevave Compact Toiletry Bag

Why It’s Great: Dopp kits come in all shapes and sizes, but I’m partial to this one because of its compact nature. However, just because it’s compressed doesn’t mean it has a limited capacity. This toiletry bag has an insane amount of space in a tiny package. There are multiple compartments, a designated dental pouch, and an extra secure hanging strap. Given that it’s only a little larger than an iPhone, it’s a really remarkable piece of travel gear.

How to Use It: Load up and go, baby. There are tons of pockets in this dopp kit to keep toiletries in their rightful place. Elastic bands lash down small items like floss, while the front mesh pockets make it easy to find exactly what you’re looking for. There’s even a back pocket for quick access – keep your razor here to nab stray hairs without opening up the entire case.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: This is definitely a dopp kit for minimalists. It has just enough space for all the essentials without much else. So if you’re traveling with your entire bathroom cabinet, you may need something larger.

9. Best Carry On Luggage: Tumi Expandable Carry On

Why It’s Great: As a full time traveler, I have used pretty much every luggage brand under the sun. The only one that didn’t wimp out on me? This Tumi roller bag. As one of the best luggage brands , this bag is dependable, expandable, and carry-on compliant. Not to mention it has all the extra bells and whistles like a TSA lock, built in USB port and internal compression straps. It’s lightweight, spacious, and easy to maneuver with four spinner wheels, ensuring the bag moves with you instead of having to drag it behind you.

How to Use It: The interior of this carry on luggage has multiple zippered compartments to easily segment your belongings, while the compression straps ensure nothing is sticking out when it’s time to zip it up. Use it for years to come without struggle – this bag is made to last.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: This carry on is definitely on the pricier side, but you’re paying for quality. That said, it’s worth noting that if you purchase the bag off Amazon, rather than from Tumi directly, you’ll need to pay for the warranty.

10. Best Travel Pants: Lee Extreme Motion Cargo Pant

Why They’re Great: Nothing is worse than wearing jeans on long travel days, which is why it’s worth having a pair of designated travel pants in your wardrobe. This pair has a cargo style with front and back pockets, along with zippered cargo pockets on each leg to keep valuables stowed safely. They’re great for exploring new cities in comfort without looking like a slob, and have a really reasonable price point given the quality and functionality.

How They Feel: These Lee cargo pants look like slacks but feel like sweats – even the waistband is designed with extra stretch. As a men’s travel essential, these pants have a sophisticated straight leg, with a super soft, stretchy material. With seven colorways to choose from, these are the only pants you’ll ever want to wear, on the plane and off.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers: Since the fabric is a solid mid-weight, these pants are a bit light for cold weather wear, but are a dependable option if you’re looking for men’s stretch pants to travel in.

Travel Essentials for Men: What to Consider

Type of traveller.

The type of traveler majorly impacts what qualifies as travel essentials for men. For example, a barebones traveler may opt to forego a travel wallet for men or neck pillow, while a more upscale traveler might enjoy these items.

Additionally, casual jet-setters will make good use of comfortable items like men’s travel pants. But business travelers will likely focus on appearance-based essentials like nice attire, a travel razor, and a manicure set.

As you can see, the type of traveler will impact what is considered essential. It’s all about leaning into what makes the most sense for your unique purposes.

Trip Length

Trip length will also impact travel essentials for men, because there’s no point in packing a passport wallet for quick domestic travel. If you’re going away for a couple of days, you can often get away with the basics like a backpack, laptop sleeve, and headphones. Since you won’t be gone long, you can probably leave essentials like a travel razor and manicure set behind.

However, if you’re going on a lengthy trip or a well deserved vacation, you’ll want to pack all of the essentials on this list in order to stay comfortable and well-groomed when away from home.

Finally, it’s worth thinking about how travel essentials factor into your personal comfort while on the go. Travel days are brutal enough as they are, so it’s always wise to make them as easy on yourself as possible.

This likely includes investing in comfortable essentials like a sturdy backpack and breathable travel pants. Additionally, items like noise canceling headphones and a soft neck pillow will make your trip much more comfortable, making them choice travel essentials.

Over the past five years, I’ve traveled to five continents, over thirty countries, and more cities than I can count. Because of the high amount of movement in my life, I’ve had to be conscious of what I pack. Since I live out of a backpack and don’t have room for everything, I’ve had to get serious about travel essentials.

Drawing on my own personal experience, the advice of my boyfriend (who’s been my travel companion for half a decade), and the other voyaging men in my life, I’ve been able to determine the best travel essentials in hopes of helping guys really understand what they need to be successful and comfortable on the go.

At the end of the day, you can have all of the travel essentials in the world, but nothing will serve you quite as well as a backpack. My top pick is the expandable Tropicfeel Shell Backpack , which has gear attachment points, a roomy interior, and padded carry straps. It’s also worth bringing along a travel wallet and noise canceling headphones , no matter the trip length of destination.

The must have travel essentials for a man include a dependable backpack, a passport wallet, noise canceling headphones, versatile trousers, and a dopp kit. If you have some extra room, you can also bring along extras like a laptop case, manicure set, travel razor, and lightweight pillow.

The Best Personal Item Bags

Nomad Lane Bento Bag under airplane seat.

Catriona Kendall | U.S. News

When you're traveling on an airplane, there are certain items like your wallet, phone, passport, medications and earbuds that you always want to keep close. These are the items you'll want to pack in your personal item bag, along with other in-flight comfort items or perhaps a few souvenirs you're bringing home with you. When it comes to a personal item, there are many options that could be right for you, though keep in mind what airlines will allow can vary.

What size is a personal item bag?

This item can be a purse , bag or backpack that easily fits under the seat in front of you. For most domestic airlines, your personal item should be 18 x 14 x 8 inches or smaller. Most airlines allow passengers to bring one carry-on bag that goes into the overhead bin and one personal item bag that can be stowed under the seat. For both carry-on and personal item bags, it's important to check your airline's carry-on luggage size requirements and policies.

To help you decide what personal item bag meets your needs, our editors shared their go-to bags they personally use when traveling by air.

It is versatile enough to use throughout your vacation as a handbag, or you can fold it up and store it away once you reach your destination. The Le Pliage tote is made of nylon, so it is water-resistant and easy to wipe clean after traveling. There is a small interior pocket that can hold a boarding pass, phone or cardholder, or you can pop in a separate organizer from Amazon for multiple interior compartments. Osprey Nebula 32 in red leaning against a tree.

Zach Watson | U.S. News

Price: $140 or less

This spacious backpack offers the design features of a more technical backpack − like a removable webbing belt along with top and bottom compression straps − but with an emphasis on everyday needs. There are numerous interior pockets to keep all of your travel essentials securely stowed, a TSA-approved laptop sleeve and a front zippered organization pocket. The exterior has two deep, adjustable side pockets that can fit two Nalgene-size water bottles. The Osprey Nebula 32 features two padded straps and a breathable back to help make carrying the bag more comfortable, even in humid climates.

My Osprey Nebula 32 is in the running for my oldest personal possession; I've used it for over a decade. That means this Nebula pack started as a college backpack, lugging my textbooks between classes in Chicago snowstorms before joining me in Washington, D.C., where it kept my belongings safe on my humid (and occasionally rainy) bike commutes. Now, I primarily use my backpack for hiking and flying, and it still holds up remarkably well despite my regular mistreatment. I don't intend to replace my go-to personal item anytime soon, so this Osprey backpack has absolutely justified its admittedly high upfront cost. – Zach Watson , Senior Editor

When purchasing a bag, I am looking for something that is durable and multifunctional. With its many storage compartments and large carrying capacity (perfect for the chronic over-packer or anyone who just can't say no to a souvenir), this bag is perfect for both travel and everyday use. – Alissa Grisler , Editor

Best Carry-On Luggage

carry on pro plus monos travel

As a travel blogger, I am constantly on the go. When it comes to the dilemma of “to carry on or to not carry on” I always choose the latter. Who wants to deal with the drama of missing luggage? Not I! That’s why I always bring a carry-on suitcase (as well as a checked one because a girl needs her options).

I couldn’t recommend the Monos Carry-on Pro more. One of the best travel items to invest in. Monos has sleek carry-on luggage equipped with loads of interior pockets to help keep you organized on the go. They also include a lifetime warranty when purchasing so you can ensure you’ll have this suitcase for years to come. For my friends on a budget, consider this affordable Amazon version that has great reviews.

Best Checked Luggage

When choosing checked luggage, it’s important to pick a sturdy suitcase that’s easy to maneuver and has enough space for all your essentials. I would love to be the type of traveler to only bring a carry-on but I need options. This Monos large check-in is a literal lifesaver on long journey travels.

I packed 2.5 weeks of a Fall Europe adventure into this one suitcase alone. It has an unbreakable shell and ample compartments and zipper pockets to keep you organized while you’re on the go. The wheels are 360 degrees and are extremely quiet when barrelling through airports. Finally, if you’re on a budget consider this Amazon Checked Bag .

Best Travel Bags for Every Type of Traveler

Travel tote.

A travel tote is a great addition to your packing list and will help carry those extra items that didn’t fit in a carry-on. A good travel tote should be sturdy, spacious, and lightweight, with multiple compartments to help you stay organized. I love this Tote from BEIS because it’s so versatile and it goes with everything. It also has an insert that fits on your suitcase handle and a crossbody strap. All the options! Finally, it allows you to keep your essentials close at hand and provides a convenient way to stay organized on the go. For my friends on a budget consider this Amazon Travel Tote .

PRO TRAVEL TIP: Don’t pack out the tote before leaving. The reason is you’ll never know what you’ll pick up on your travels so leave space for a few souvenirs.

Travel Backpack

If you’re traveling from city to city with multiple stops then a travel backpack is the way to go! Don’t get me wrong, traveling with a tote is chicer however traveling with a backpack is more comfortable. Especially for long travel journeys. I use a backpack on most trips and have loved this Lululemon Backpack for years. It fits way more than you would expect it to! I’m able to fit my cosmetic hanging case, a Canon camera, an extra lens, my laptop, a baseball cap, and my AirPod Max headphones. All in this one bag. Don’t underestimate this backpack! For a more affordable option check out this one from Amazon .

Travel Weekender

If you need more space than a tote or a backpack then pick up this Weekender Bag . This weekend bag from Beis is great because it not only fits under the seat but is made of cloth fabric which makes it super durable. Along with that, it has a padded laptop pocket and a zippered shoe pocket at the bottom to bring that extra pair (because we always need that extra pair right ladies?). No lie, you can fit 3 pairs of shoes on the bottom of this bag. It’s incredible for space saving! Finally, check out this budget-friendly Amazon Weekend Bag .

Must-Have Travel Essentials Gear

Best packing cubes.

If you have never packed with packing cubes before, I urge you to try (and then thank me later). When packing, using packing cubes not only help with organization, but you can simply transport the cubes from your suitcase to a hotel dresser with much ease. Unpacking while on a trip has never been easier! Finally, if you’re traveling with your significant other, the hack is to purchase two sets (two different colors). This keeps us organized and easily distinguishes which cubes are whose. Finally, I’ve been using packing cubes for years now and can not leave home without them!

Beis Packing Cube Set

Amazon Packing Cube Set

Travel Containers for Liquids

Who wants to lug full-size beauty products on a trip? Not me! When purchasing travel containers it’s the perfect way to save space. I swear by these Amazon travel containers . They come in a pack of 4 with a bag for only $12. Talk about a steal! I’ve been on countless trips and so far there has been no spillage. It’s not easy to find containers that don’t leak. Finally, you’re feeling like you want to be extra cautious consider using a plastic bag to cover the opening of the container after you fill it. Then twist the top on top of the bag.

Cosmetic Case

Having all of your cosmetics in one place is the only way to do it when traveling, ladies. Who wants to scramble to find their moisturizer when you have a new destination to explore? By purchasing a roomy cosmetic case you are saving time by digging through that pack. This case fits all of my makeup and skincare items needed and the hanging option is a great option to have. Finally, I can fit this exact case in my travel backpack with lots of room to spare.

Travel Portable Charger

Nothing is worse than running out of phone battery while you’re in a foreign city or even traveling domestically. Do yourself a favor and purchase this portable battery charger so you never have to worry. This rechargeable power bank is my go-to comes in a pack of two so you never run out of juice. Furthermore, it charges your phone fast so you can continue on your journey with a full battery.

Noise Cancelling Headphones

These are my most used items when on a long flight. Nobody wants to hear babies crying or loud people amid conversation when on a long flight. The worst is when someone chooses to watch their phone without headphones cue the eye roll. Do yourself a favor and get these AirPod Max Noise Cancelling headphones so you can sit back and relax. I have had these for a year now and nothing has made my travels more stress-free. You literally cannot hear anything with these on. Finally, for a less expensive version, albeit with similar qualities, check this Amazon pair out !

AirFly Adapter

When traveling, I don’t like to use the headphones that the airlines give out. For many reasons. One they’re not noise canceling and two the output is so old. Since we are now in the 21st century there is an AirFly adapter that I just started using recently. This allows you to plug into the screen on your seat and listen with your headphones. Such a game changer when traveling with others too because there are two outputs. This means your partner and you can watch the movie together.

Travel Water Bottle

Don’t spend money on overpriced plastic water bottles at the airport. Instead, bring your reusable one. One of the best useful travel tips out there. Every airport has filtered fountains that are free to fill up your water. It’s so important to hydrate when traveling so you can arrive at your destination refreshed. But don’t forget to make sure it’s empty before going through security. Finally, for the exact collapsible water bottle I use, pick up this Amazon water bottle that’s perfect for extra space-saving.

Travel Wrap

One of my most used essentials for travel is a cashmere wrap. It can serve many purposes on a long-haul flight. You can wear it as a scarf, roll it up to use it as a pillow, or simply wrap yourself up in a cozy blanket when the cabin gets chilly (which it always does. let’s be real). This cashmere wrap is a bit of a splurge (think investment piece) but you’ll have it for years to come! I included a more affordable option from Amazon as well.

Silk Eye Mask

A silk eye mask is a must-have travel accessory that can make a big difference in the quality of your sleep when you’re on the go. When traveling, it’s not always easy to get a good night’s sleep. Whether you’re on a long-haul flight or staying in a hotel room with unfamiliar surroundings. A silk eye mask can help block out light and create a soothing environment for better sleep.

In addition to helping you get better sleep, silk eye masks can also provide a range of other benefits when traveling. They can help alleviate dry eyes and prevent puffiness, as well as provide a sense of privacy and relaxation in crowded or noisy environments.

Travel Adapter

If you have ever traveled abroad and were not able to use your curling iron, I feel for you! The electrical outlets in Europe use a different voltage and plug shape than those in North America, which means that if you plug in a device without an adapter, it could get damaged. When traveling to other countries it’s always smart to bring a travel adapter so you can use your electronics with no issue. Finally, we have this Amazon Adapter that has 4 international adapters for multiple countries.

A Straw Hat (Spring/Summer)

Packing a hat is high on the travel essentials list, especially when traveling to warm weather climates. If you want to lay by the pool and protect that precious face or just sightsee and stay nice and cool – make sure to pack a hat! I love my Brixton fedora so much that I own it in 3 colors. Packing Tip: pack the top of the hat with clothing and then surround the hat in your suitcase with soft clothing so it doesn’t bend.

Baseball Cap or Beanie (Fall/Winter)

For colder weather climates I always have a beanie or baseball cap on hand. For multiple reasons. One of which is that if my hair is greasy from traveling long days I can throw it on and look put together.

For trips where I’m active and outdoors, I always pack my oversized visor . It protects my face from the sun and I don’t have to worry about ruining it because it was only $17. Sure it may be a little dorky but your girl is a skincare queen so I’d rather that than get sun on my face when being outdoors all day.

Face Moisturizer

Being on a plane for multiple hours can dry anyone out. Don’t arrive at your destination with dry skin! Instead, use this Kiehl moisturizer to keep your skin looking nice and refreshed. I don’t leave home without it, especially when traveling.

Disinfectant Wipes + Hand Sanitizer

One word: Coronavirus. Let’s not forget 2020, the year that took the travel industry by storm. One of the most essential travel items is disinfectant wipes. When traveling it’s best to wipe your entire seat, TV, window, and tray table with disinfectant wipes BEFORE sitting down. I’m also linking my favorite shields for those who want extra protection.

Warm-weather or not, outside or inside, sunscreen is a necessity that everyone needs to use daily. For face sunscreen, I couldn’t recommend Elta MD more. You want to make sure you are always using broad-spectrum sunscreen because it protects against UVA and UVB rays. Elta MD is a dermatologist approved and ever since I started using it, I have never broken out. It’s my holy grail skincare item and if I could only pick a few essentials for travel, this would be top of my list!

Sunscreen Brush

Ok, this sunscreen brush is my new favorite item! When traveling, I tend to have a full face of makeup, and reapplying sunscreen in the middle of the day is tough when you are wearing makeup. Cue the SuperGoop sunscreen brush , the easiest way to re-apply sunscreen on the go. It’s truly a lifesaver and has come in handy during my recent travels.

Another travel packing list to check off is lip balm. Unfortunately, many people suffer from chapped lips when there is a climate change. This Summer Friday Lip Balm is the best for chapped lips. It goes on so smoothly and is not sticky like most other lip balms.

Body Lotion

Ladies, how much do you spend on skincare products? Now ask yourself, how much do you spend on body products? If you are like me, you would pick up whatever lotion was on sale at Target. But let me tell you when I started using Necessaire products the skin on my body never looked better! Not only does this lotion have niacinamide in it but it’s fragrance-free and it’s a must when packing my bags. You can shop for all the goods here .

Travel Card

If you are an avid traveler then one of the best travel products to invest in is a travel card. You can receive many perks such as free upgrades, free flights, and even a companion certificate so your companion can fly for free once a year (within the US). I use the American Express Delta card for everything and we use our miles to book flights quite often. Last year my husband and I flew to Europe and back for $100. It has an annual fee of $250 and you receive tons of benefits. If you use my Amex referral code you can currently get 50,000 bonus miles signing up!

Must-Have Travel Essentials Checklist

Below I covered the ultimate trip packing list for you to check off before your flight. Screenshot this travel packing checklist to help you plan:

Best Packing Tips from a Travel Blogger

Over the past 10 years, I have learned quite a few packing tips. I’m spilling the tea below!

  • Use packing cubes! It’s the best way to organize and save space and time while traveling
  • Roll your dresses altogether. Start by laying them all flat on top of each other and fold in the corners then roll and pack in a packing cube. You will save so much space
  • The same can be applied to tops
  • Pack socks and accessories inside your shoes
  • Consider travel compression bags for heavier items. I use these when I travel in the fall/winter to pack sweaters and I’m always pleasantly surprised by how well they work
  • If you’re not using a travel-safe container then use plastic wrap underneath the caps of your toiletry items

Well, there you have it. If you use this “Must Have Travel Essentials Packing List”, you will be more than prepared! Thanks for reading this must-have travel essentials post and check out more of my travel guides !

Airplane seats are not the most comfortable, and if you’re going to be en route overnight, trying to catch some z’s in them can be near impossible. “Sleeping with a mask is life-changing—I cannot tell you how much the quality of my sleep has improved!" Oprah said of the mask in this year's Favorite Things list . "This weighted 100 percent silk one stays down and doesn’t let even a pinch of light in.”

Best Travel Blankets

A travel blanket that packs down and rolls up is handy when the temperatures fluctuate on a flight or in your hotel room. The best travel blankets are lightweight, easy to pack and machine washable for quick cleaning.

Wearable Blanket That's Insulated

Gravel layover travel blanket.

There’s a high probability that your flight’s air conditioning will rival the temperatures found in the Arctic. To stave off shivers, opt for a lightweight travel blanket that keeps you covered and cozy. Gravel’s top-rated blanket has an insulated core, kangaroo pockets to slip your hands into and a spill-proof nylon backing. It also folds up into an easy-to-transport bag that can double as a pillow during long plane or bus rides. As a bonus, it’s made from recycled materials and backed by a lifetime warranty, so it’s a purchase you can feel good about.

Soft, Plush Packable Option

Unhide lil marsh traveler.

UnHide Lil Marsh Traveler is incredibly soft and comfortable, and it provides warmth without feeling too bulky or cumbersome. This pick is machine-washable and crafted from 300 GSM polyester (GSM refers to grams per square meter; a higher number denotes a more durable and warmer fabric). Best Cord Organizers

To prevent your cables and chargers from becoming a tangled mess in your backpack or luggage, go for a cord organizer. The best options have separate compartments and a sturdy shell or case to prevent electronics from being crushed en-route.

Kit With Plenty Of Pockets

Bellroy tech kit.

If you’re the type of traveler who packs practically every electronic device that you own, the Bellroy Tech Kit is for you. It organizes your wires, chargers and batteries with magnetic slip and mesh pockets, as well as elastic cable loops to keep your devices safe, protected and secure. This is a bag you’ll not only toss into your carry-on, but also your everyday handbag, too.

Compact And Lightweight Organizer

Fyy travel cable organizer.

For a budget-friendly option that clocks in under $15, this compact cord organizer has two zippered compartments that open up to reveal smaller mesh pockets for all of your cords, cables and memory cards. Smaller pockets can fit things like batteries or Apple AirTags. This bag comes in multiple colors that make it easy to identify in the bottom of your bag and the wrist strap is a handy feature. For longer journeys, the medium size offers extra storage space.

Best Toiletry Bags

Toiletry bags and dopp kits keep grooming supplies in one place and protect other items in your luggage from spills or leaks. (There’s nothing worse than realizing your shampoo leaked mid-flight and soaked into your clothing.) The best options are durable, spacious, water-resistant and stylish.

Roomy Pick With Plenty Of Pockets

Away the hanging toiletry bag.

Away’s hanging toiletry bag provides see-through compartments to organize your favorite beauty products and grooming tools—and it also unfolds and hangs for quick and easy access. Thanks to its nylon-coated, spill-proof interior, it’s not a disaster if something cracks or explodes along the way.

Compact Bag For All Of The Essentials

Dagne Dover

Dagne Dover Seoul Dopp Kit

Although Dagne Dover is known for its totes, backpacks and duffles, the brand has an impressive assortment of smaller travel accessories, including the Seoul Dopp Kit. The spacious interior compartment keeps personal items in the same place and the recycled polyester lining is easy to wipe clean. Other thoughtful features include a separate toothbrush compartment and a hook for hanging this on a door or towel rack. It’s available in four colors and a larger size.

Best Compression Socks

Compression socks can help with leg fatigue and discomfort during travel by increasing circulation in the legs. These specially-designed socks hug the lower leg and have a bit of stretch so they can be pulled on easily. Look for options that are comfortable, breathable and offer targeted compression.

Relieve Aches And Pains On Long Flights

Bombas everyday compression socks.

Perfect for long flights to relieve aches and pains and stimulate blood flow, Bombas’ compression sock are as stylish as they are functional. Available in a handful of neutral colors and prints, they’re made from extra-long staple cotton to keep calves and feet warm and supported. Also, as part of Bombas’ mission to give back, a pair of socks is donated for every pair purchased.

Budget-Friendly Pair You Can Stock Up On

Go2socks compression socks.

With firm compression and durable nylon construction, these socks are a low-cost but effective for travel. The elasticized fabric hugs the lower legs, so putting them on might require some effort, but they’re comfortable once they’re on your legs. Users appreciate the bright color options (there are a few patterns to choose from as well) and say they hold up well to frequent use. For more options, check out our guide to the best compression socks .

Best Travel Water Bottles

Staying hydrated has numerous benefits, but when you’re traveling, it can help with jet lag and keep you alert and active. The best water bottles for travel are easy to refill, durable, leakproof and insulating.

Lightweight, Stainless Steel Option

Stainless steel memobottle.

Hydration can make or break your health, but nothing is more cumbersome than an oversized water bottle that can’t fit in your travel bag. Enter Slim’s stainless steel Memobottle: With a minimalist design and slim water container, this flask-like pick slides into practically any space, including backpacks, briefcases, carry-on bags, purses and even side pockets.

Leakproof To Prevent Spills On The Go

Hydro flask standard mouth water bottle.

This 24-ounce water bottle is another great option that’s easy to throw in your luggage or slip into a side compartment on your travel bag. The 18/8 stainless steel construction keeps beverages cold for 24 hours and hot for 12 hours and won’t alter the taste of your water. It’s dishwasher safe, and the leakproof lid prevents spills in transit.

Best Noise-Cancelling Headphones

Whether you’re on a noisy plane, immersing yourself in a museum exhibit or simply want to tune out the sounds of other tourists, a pair of noise-canceling headphones or earbuds is a must. The best options have a robust battery life, touch-based controls that easily adjust volume or answer calls and a secure fit.

Earbuds With Crystal Clear Sound

Bose quietcomfort earbuds ii.

Bose’s earbuds do an excellent job of both blocking outside sounds and playing crystal-clear music. The case also comes with three sizes of ear tips to accommodate your ear shape and every play option, from bass to treble levels, can be custom-tailored through Bose’s easy-to-use app. Our favorite feature is its ActiveSense technology that automatically adjusts the volume level according to your surroundings.

Sleek Pick With Memory Foam Padding

Bowers & wilkins px7 s2.

If you prefer over-ear headphones to earbuds, these Bowers & Wilkins offer some of the best sound, comfort and noise cancellation. Even when you’re not playing music, the noise-cancellation feature works so you can slip them on to focus while reading at the airport or sending emails. A full charge gives you 30 hours of battery life, which is ideal for long flights and road trips, and the memory foam padding on the ear cups prevents irritation. We also like the compact hard-shell case that zippers shut to keep your headphones and charging cable safe.

Best Neck Pillows

If you plan to sleep on your flight or prevent neck pain in transit, the best neck pillows keep your head in proper alignment with your spine while also being cozy and soft.

Scarf-Like Pillow That's Soft And Breathable

Trtl travel pillow.

Not all neck pillows are created equal and Trtl’s take is lightyears beyond the common foam crescents that can sometimes do more harm than good. Designed to look like a scarf, it’s much more supportive than most U-shaped pillows. Simply loop and wrap it around your neck and adjust the fit so it rests underneath your jaw and shoulder. Trtl’s inner material is machine-washable and its fabric is breathable and cooling to the touch.

Memory Foam Option With Plenty Of Support

Ostrichpillow go neck pillow.

If you’re a frequent traveler, the Ostrichpillow Go Neck Pillow is worth the splurge for its 360-degree memory foam neck support. The velcro closure allows you to customize how tight (or loose) it fits around your neck, and it can be worn with the closure facing frontward or backward. When it’s not being used, it compresses down to 60% of its size to fit in the included travel bag. Or, you can wrap it around the handle of your luggage. For more expert-backed recommendations, read our guide to the best neck pillows .

Best Packing Cubes

Packing cubes maximize the space in your luggage and keep your garments wrinkle-free, protected and organized. You can group items by type of clothing (for example, keep all t-shirts together in one cube) or by outfit. Look for lightweight, flexible options with sturdy zippers that hold up to frequent use.

A Must-Have For Over Packers

July packing cells.

Packing cubes not only make for easy storage and organization, but they also help to limit the amount of clothing and personal items you bring on a trip. If you’re a notorious over packer, these zippable compartments are an essential. Available in a set of four sizes with mesh tops and side carry handles, these lightweight space savers hold anything and everything, from underwear and shoes to jeans and an entire three-piece suit. They’re also 100% stain proof and machine washable.

Set Of Six Cubes That's Ideal For Long Journeys

Away packing cubes (6-piece).

This set of six packing cubes keeps things organized and secure in your suitcase and looks good while doing it. The variety of sizes, ranging from 6.9 x 4.1 x 4.3 inches to 17 x 4.1 x 12.8, is ideal for longer trips requiring more items. The durable nylon is water resistant, and the mesh tops let you to see what’s inside quickly. If you’re packing for a shorter weekend trip, opt for the four-piece set instead. Looking for more options? Check out our list of the best packing cubes .

Best Luggage Trackers

The best luggage trackers help you stay on top of your belongings when you’re on the go and can emit an alarm or tone when you need to locate a lost bag. The best options are lightweight, compact and easy to set up.

Smart And Handy Option

Apple airtag.

Using a luggage tracker can give you peace of mind by ensuring your bags make it from one destination to the next. The Apple AirTag is an excellent option that earns top marks for its easy setup, accuracy and sleek design. Simply pull the security tag to set it up, and it automatically pairs with your iPhone. (It doesn’t require a paid subscription or a separate app since it integrates into the Find My app on all Apple phones and devices.) You can also customize the notifications and trigger a sound should you need help locating a lost item.

Pick That's iOS And Android Compatible

The Tile Pro is compatible with iOS and Android and has a loud alarm that makes it easy to locate lost luggage. It’s slightly bigger than the Apple AirTag but easily slips into a backpack, suitcase or small bag. Other helpful features include an integrated keychain hole, a replaceable battery and waterproof construction. The free version of the app allows you to track your luggage on a map and view past locations, but you have to pay a monthly fee to access more premium features. For more options, check out our list of the best luggage trackers .

Best Travel Jewelry Cases

Keep necklaces, bracelets and other valuables protected and tangle-free: These compact cases have small compartments for your items that can often be rearranged or removed for extra storage space.

A Compact And Stylish Organizer

Mark & Graham

Mark & Graham Small Travel Jewelry Case

Rather than tossing necklaces, bracelets and earrings into a bag, Mark & Graham’s travel jewelry case has separate compartments to keep your precious items tangle-free and unscratched. This pick can also be monogrammed and the pebbled vegan leather interior features a built-in mirror.

Oval Case With Removable Compartments

Monos travel jewelry case.

The Monos Travel Jewelry Case is another sleek option with a customizable interior. The oval case measures 5.6 x 2 x 3.4 inches and has an earring panel, ring tray and small leather pouch that can all be removed to accommodate larger pieces. With ultra-microfibre vegan leather and buttery microfibre suede lining, this luxurious case keeps all of your essential pieces safely tucked away during your travels. For more options, check out our review of the best travel jewelry cases .

Best Power Adapters

If you’re traveling internationally, you’ll want to pack a power adapter so you can easily charge your gadgets—just be sure to check each device’s voltage listing.

Pick That Can Charge Up To Five Different Devices

Oneworld100 international adapter with charger.

Another country, another unfamiliar outlet. Not only does the OneWorld100 adapter charge up to five devices simultaneously (two for larger ones like a MacBook Pro), it’s also compatible in over 200 countries. But one feature that makes a significant difference is its over-current, over-temperature and fuse protector so that you don’t accidentally start a fire if left unsupervised. This is precisely the peace of mind needed when traveling.

Affordable And Sturdy Option

Epicka universal travel adapter.

This universal travel adapter is hard to beat at under $25. It contains four different plugs, which should cover you in most countries, and its compact size makes it easy to pack. It has four USB-A ports, one USB-C port and one AC socket for charging up to six devices at once. Users say it’s a sturdy and reliable pick that makes international travel much less of a hassle.

Best Portable Steamers

Packing a travel steamer can keep your garments smooth and wrinkle-free while you’re on the go. The best travel steamer are compact, lightweight and powerful enough for different types of fabrics, such as wool and denim.

Pick That Heats Up Quickly And Zaps Wrinkles

Conair turbo extremesteam.

The greatest threat to your clothing, other than snags and stains, is wrinkles. More delicate fabrics like silk or linen are especially vulnerable. This portable steamer from Conair has a compact water tank that emits 15 minutes of continuous steam and the device only takes 40 seconds to heat up. A built-in creaser also forms perfect pleats and folds so that pants and skirts maintain that straight-from-the-dry-cleaner look during your stay.

Large Water Tank Gives You Extended Runtime

Electrolux portable handheld steamer.

The Forbes Vetted team dubbed this model our top value pick in our roundup of the best clothing steamers . Beyond its affordable price, this model can hold a surprising amount of water (10 ounces or 300 milliliters) and heats up in seconds. The continuous steam allows you to tackle multiple garments in one session, and it’s safe to use on a wide range of fabrics. The 12-foot cord also lets you move about while steaming your items—or reach an outlet across the room.

Best Backpacks For Travel

The best travel backpacks hold your essentials with lightweight and durable materials like nylon, polyester or leather, and plenty of interior pockets for organization.

Sleek Option With Helpful Compartments

Monos metro backpack.

Outfitted with a separate shoe compartment, smaller interior pockets and a 15-inch laptop sleeve, this sleek backpack keeps you well-organized and ready for anything. The roomy main compartment can fit clothing, books and other travel essentials, while the included pouch is perfect for smaller odds and ends. Choose from water-resistant nylon or vegan leather.

Highly Durable And Rugged Pick

Cotopaxi allpa travel pack.

Another Forbes Vetted favorite is the Cotopaxi Allpa Travel Pack. Unlike traditional backpacks, it opens like a suitcase and has multiple zippered pockets inside to keep your belongings organized. There’s also a padded laptop sleeve and removable waist belt to prevent back strain. Plus, the nylon and polyester construction is extremely durable and easy to wipe clean. For other options, check out our roundup of the best carry-on backpacks .

Best Travel Totes

A travel tote is an excellent way to corral all your belongings and keep them easily organized. The best options are lightweight, durable, spacious and stylish.

Well-Crafted Bag That's Fully Customizable

Cuyana system tote.

For a versatile travel bag that also functions as a daily work tote, Cuyana’s System Tote is crafted from pebbled leather or croco leather and comes in two size options: 13-inch and 16-inch. Just keep in mind that extra pieces are not included in the price of the bag.

Expandable Design That's Ultra-Lightweight

Calpak luka expandable laptop tote.

If you’re a chronic overpacker, an expandable tote allows you to pack additional items without overfilling your bag. This soft, polyester bag expands up to four inches, giving you added flexibility when packing. Users appreciate the thoughtful internal compartments, padded shoulder straps and luggage sleeve for seamless airport travel. What’s more, the fun colors allow you to match this bag to your luggage. Howdy Michele, I love to travel. I’ve read so many posts about travel gadgets, but you are the best one. Your article was beneficial in finding the necessary devices. I personally like an anti-theft shockproof backpack, which is ScanSmart TSA friendly and water-resistant. It is useful for everyone.

Thank you so much, Kim 🙂

Hello, I have gone through your guide and seems to be interesting though I have one more concern on the WiFi devices. Can you recommend me on the best Pocket Device that will work well on anywhere I travel. I have using AllDayWifi but its very slow on their international data plan. I have been considering RentnConnect though I know very little about it

Hi Collins, have you considered this Skyroam device ? It one of the leaders in the market and very compact.

' src=

What about this Trackimo 3G Travel Tracker device this has Light Exposure Sensor – detect/alerts when package or luggage is opened. I am currently using this tracker and i found this very useful to me every time i go travel around the world 🙂

Excellent addition Helen, thank you 🙂

' src=

A tracking device would be a great addition to this list.

' src=

Amazing! This makes traveling easier.

' src=

Definitely brilliant ideas worth sharing

' src=

This IS such a cool list! I thought I had everything, but then I found out the door travel alarm (never would’ve thought of it)!. And I wonder how good the neck support (#33) is because there were PLENTY of times I could have used something like that on my trips.

Hey Trang, the door alarm is such a great idea especially for those times when you just don’t feel safe 🙂 Is there anything you’d add to the list?

' src=

I just carry a small rubber door stop wedge.

' src=

WOW! This is one extensive list of all things travel and certainly one that I will be using to give hints to my friends and family round the holiday season. The new ScanSmart backpack along with the waterproof phone case and solar charger are on top of my list. However my top two purchases are going to be the smart suitcase and the backpack which are absolutely brilliant. Thanks for such a cool list.

' src=

Hi Michele, There are all great ideas. I have one more suggestion for you. Smart Blanket! I used it when flying to Zurich to see my son and his family. The plane was freezing, and there were no blankets to be had. I was the only one that was warm and cozy for the whole 8 hours. I love mine. Got it on Amazon http://amzn.to/2hTYlOP I paid $49.00 for mine. Think they are having a sale on them now. Hope you like my suggestion.

' src=

The door alarm and aeroplane pillow are a great idea to stay comfy and safe! I always take an extension lead when I travel; so that I have more plug sockets in a hotel room, and it also means you don’t need as many adapters when you travel. You also can’t go wrong with baby wipes and small-ish plastic bags in case a seat is wet, a bottle is leaking or you’ve got a mark on your clothes! ✈️?

All brilliant ideas Emily 🙂 Thanks for sharing. I love the baby wipes idea!

A bottle of Aesop Immediate Moisture Facial Hydrosol

One spray is enough to have you feeling refreshed

Airplane cabins have notoriously dry air, which can be bad news for your skin. Spritz your way back to hydration with Aesop's vegan Immediate Moisture Facial Hydrosol, a refreshing rose petal-infused mist. Spray it as often as necessary and be sure to take a deep breath in to savor the fresh floral and citrus scent.

10 Best Travel Essentials for Long Haul Flights and Long Layovers

A little bit of planning when when deciding on your essentials for long haul flights as well as the expected or unexpected long layovers is huge in ensuring your comfort and enjoyment while traveling.

With each long haul flight, you become a little more travel savvy as well as determined to make your long journeys as enjoyable as possible.

Travel Essentials for Women and Men for Planned or Unplanned Long Layovers

If you have ever experienced a travel layover, particularly an unplanned layover , you may identify with these titles: "How to Survive the Airport Layover from Hell" , "Surviving your Nightmare Airport Layover" , or "Surviving THE Longest Layover Ever!"

However you choose to describe your experience, a little bit of preplanning can go a long way in helping you to pass the time on your trip.

What you really need to do is be prepared for the possibility of a layover with the most essential of travel accessories: your phone, water bottle, toiletries, snacks, etc.

10 Essentials for Long Haul Flights or Long Layovers

As travel enthusiasts and frequent flyers, Chris and I have both experienced the dreaded long layovers. Layovers that seem to go on and on forever with delay after delay. We've also booked our share of long haul flights that also seem to go on forever and ever.

To ensure that you arrive at your destination with your sanity in tact, consider packing these 10 travel essentials for women and men.

In my opinion, a smart phone and a portable charger are of equal importance when planning essentials for long haul flights or when you are stuck on long layovers at the airport.

Smart phones are travel essentials for men and women— a must have if you will —that you don’t want to leave home without. You can use your smart phone on long haul flights or long layover to:

  • set an alarm if you want to sleep
  • receive flight updates
  • touch base with home
  • listen to music or podcasts
  • watch a movie or TV show
  • surf the internet
  • post to social media

Many options are available for smart phones so choose what best fits your personal preference.

If you are still in the camp of not owning a smart phone , get one!

2. Portable Charger

I recommend that you always travel with a  portable charger for charging your electronic devices (especially your phone).

A travel charger is one of the essentials for long haul flights that I ALWAYS pack.

If you are using your devices during an airport layover, you may not always have easy access to charging outlets in the airport. The  INIU Portable Charger  works like a charm and is one of the travel essentials for women and men for keeping your phone charged to receive important travel updates.

These chargers are perfect for your day-to-day travel needs as well. If you are using your phone to take pictures, navigate, or search for tours, you will need to keep your phone charged all day long.

Buy on Amazon

3. Cables & A Cable Organizer

Don't forget to pack your cables in your backpack, personal travel bag , or carry on luggage . Having cables in your "checked" luggage won't do you any good if you need to charge your devices during a long haul flight or on a long layover.

Invest in a cable organizer to keep everything categorized. Get in the habit of double checking your organizer for cables you may have forgotten to unplug and pack. Many organizers with clear pockets can help you tell in a glance if you forgotten something.

4. iPad and Keyboard

As a travel blogger, having access to my iPad and a keyboard is essential. Sure, you could use the on screen keyboard on your iPad to type blog posts, but I have done that before when I forgot to bring a keyboard and it is neither fun nor easy.

If you need to catch up on work, text with family or friends, or even post to social media, having both your tablet and a keyboard is optimal.

5. Water Bottle

Yes, you can buy a water bottle at the airport, but having a reusable water bottle is not only earth friendly but also less expensive. Fill and refill your water bottle as needed. Staying hydrated on your long layovers is important too.

6. Backpack or Personal Travel Bag

I love my The North Face travel backpack designed especially for women and picked it for a variety of reasons. It is definitely one of my travel essentials for women.

There is also a standard size The North Face Backpack that is perfect if you are looking for travel essentials for men. Chris LOVES his.

If you are looking for a travel bag, do a little research and make a list of your must-haves.

Not sure exactly what your must-haves should be? Here are a few features to look for:

  • a travel bag or backpack that is designed specifically for men or women
  • a padded laptop section
  • a large middle section for a camera insert
  • lots of interior and exterior pockets
  • expandable side pockets for a water bottle, easily accessible hand sanitizer, and  Blistex
  • a mesh front pocket
  • a sternum strap
  • a waist belt

You'll find that your travel backpack is often your home away from home with all of your essential travel accessories close at hand.

I also love the Travelon Crossbody Bag (in addition to my backpack). I carry this and my backpack and love the convenience of having essentials close at hand.

This bag is my new favorite crossbody bag for travel .

7. Noise Canceling Headphones

Whether you opt for a corded or a bluetooth set of noise canceling headphones , you'll enjoy peace and quiet in the midst of travel noise and chaos.

The Bose QuietComfort 20 Acoustic Noise Canceling Headphones are some of Chris' favorites.

8. Toiletries

Fill a TSA approved bag with toiletry essentials:

  • 1-2 days of your prescriptions*
  • Fingernail clippers
  • Toothbrush and paste
  • Comb, pick, hairspray and hair tie
  • Hand sanitizer

There are times when you don't have the opportunity to purchase a meal or last-minute snacks when you encounter a travel layover or long haul flight. For instance, your flight is held at the gate and not allowed to come or go due to a mechanical error, staffing issues, weather, etc. In this case, you will want to have snacks readily available.

Built.com offers my go-to protein bar or granola bar. They are filling, tasty, high in protein, and don't take a lot of space in my travel bag.

A scarf as one of your travel accessories can be used for fashion and function. Find one that is stylish as well as big enough that it can double as a travel blanket when necessary.

As a bonus, a chic scarf makes a great gift for the adventure seeker in your life.

Travel + Leisure / Alli Waataja

We live in a technologically advanced society, and that means we usually bring some sort of gadget with us wherever we go, even if it’s just a phone. Some provide entertainment — like tablets, eReaders, and headphones — while others can make journeys more convenient or comfortable instead (such as luggage trackers, folding keyboards, and portable sound machines). To help you discover what your packing list could be missing, we've compiled a list of our favorite tech-related items whether you’re traveling for fun or business.

Best eReader

Amazon kindle paperwhite.

It has a 10-week battery life.

You need to pay a fee to get rid of the ad-supported lock screen.

One of the biggest players in the eReader game, the Kindle Paperwhite hits all the marks when it comes to features you need in a digital book. It has a 6.8-inch glare-free display screen with adjustable warm lighting for reading in the dark (say, on a plane at night), with a monumental battery life of 10 weeks and storage capabilities up to 16 GB. It's also water-resistant for poolside reading.

Best Earbuds

Bose quietcomfort earbuds ii.

The highly effective active noise cancellation technology drowns out annoying ambient sounds.

Our testers noticed inconsistent battery life after six months of use.

When we tested these Bose earbuds , we were impressed by a number of features, including effective active noise cancellation (ANC) technology, quick Bluetooth connectivity, and a lightweight fit. We also love that each pair comes with three sets of rubber earpieces, each a different size to accommodate multiple ear shapes and sizes. And, as for sound quality, Bose can't be beat, whether you're listening to music or taking a call. Though the headphones are pricey, we think these features make them worth the cost.

Best On-ear Headphones

Apple airpods max.

The ANC works particularly well for phone calls or Zoom meetings.

The only way to turn them off is by putting them in their carrying case.

These days, it's not good enough for a pair of headphones to simply deliver good sound — it needs to block sound, too. The Apple AirPods Max Wireless Over-ear Headphones do the trick with their ANC technology, which we found to be top-notch in tests . We also loved the intuitive nature, which can quickly and easily be controlled by buttons on the earpiece. But the one flaw here is that to turn them off, you must put the headphones in their carrying case. We'd appreciate a simple power button next time!

Best Power Bank

Tg90° portable charger.

It's the size of a credit card and has built-in cords.

It only holds approximately 1.5 full charges for most phones.

Portable charges come in all shapes and sizes, but if it's portability and convenience you seek, your best bet is to purchase this handy little device. Roughly the size of a credit card (albeit thicker) and weighing just 4.32 ounces, the TG90° Portable Charger is easy to toss in your bag or in your pocket. At 6000mAh, it holds less than two full charges for most phones, but it works perfectly when you need some juice in a pinch. Best of all, it has built-in Lightning and USB-C cords attached, so you don't need to waste space with extra cords.

Best Adapter

Epicka universal travel adapter.

It has six ports for maximum charging capabilities.

It's only an adapter, not a converter, so it can't handle high-energy tools like hair dryers.

A travel adapter is a must-have tool for all international travelers, since socket shapes vary in different parts of the world. This one by Epicka is our tester favorite — it can be used in more than 150 countries, making it a practical all-in-one device. It has an impressive six ports for chagrin: four USB-A, one USB-C, and 1 AC socket. So no matter what type of charger you're using, you'll be able to plug it into this adapter. As a bonus, it comes in four colors so you don't have to choose the standard black of so many tech items.

Best Wi-Fi Hotspot

Netgear nighthawk m6 pro.

It's unlocked, so you can use it on most major cell networks.

It's very expensive for occasional use only.

Portable Wi-Fi hotspots can be useful when you're traveling somewhere without a guaranteed internet connection, but do note that you'll usually need cell service to operate them. NETGEAR's Nighthawk M6 Pro is unlocked, so you can use it on any major cell network by adding a SIM card — and it taps into both 5G and the new Wi-Fi 6E to offer the highest speeds possible. You can also use a wired connection if you happen to have an ethernet cable.

Best Luggage Tracker

Eufy smarttrack link.

It's less expensive than an AirTag.

It isn't Android-compatible.

Apple AirTags might seem to run the show, but in our tests , we preferred Eufy's SmartTrack Link. For one thing, it's cheaper than an AirTag. And for another, it still works with the Find My app on iPhone just like an AirTag. Simply activate the device with the app, then put it in your checked suitcase, and you'll be able to track your bags as they make their journey through the airport and into your plane's cargo hold.

Best Projector

Nebula by anker solar portable projector.

It's compact yet still offers high-quality images and sound.

The power cord is quite short.

No, you probably won't need a portable projector on every trip you take. But if you're heading to a beach house or in a cabin in the woods, it could be a fun way to have a family movie night — particularly if your vacation rental lacks a big TV. If you're using it outdoors, note that we found the device to have a 3-hour battery life, which should work for most movies. Otherwise, you'll want to bring an extension cord to plug it in, as its built-in cord is just two feet long.

Best Smart Sunglasses

Ray-ban meta headliner.

You can't beat the video, photo, and audio quality.

The battery life isn't the best among smart glasses.

We've always been fans of Ray-ban sunglasses, but these smart glasses take the game to the next level. Within these frames, which have a slightly different shape than Ray-ban's classic Wayfarer, is a 12-megapixel camera with an ultra-wide lens to capture photos and videos that you can upload onto other devices like digital picture frames — and you can even live stream directly to Facebook or Instagram. There are five built-in microphones to capture audio, whether that's during a video recording or a phone call for extra-clear sound. The audio output quality is excellent, too, for both music and calls.

Best Digital Notebook

Rocketbook core.

You can scan a QR code to save your entries in an app.

It takes some getting used to a digital notebook rather than a traditional one.

Digital notebooks might not have the nostalgia factor of a traditional notebook, but they are pretty handy if you do a lot of journaling or doodling while you're traveling. This way, you won't have to lug around multiple notebooks on a months-long adventure! With Rocketbook Core, you can write or draw on the pages of the notebook with a Pilot pen , then scan a QR code to upload to an app. Once you're ready to start fresh, you can just wipe down each page with a slightly damp microfiber cloth (included). This is the full-size model, but there's also a mini size available if you'd prefer something more travel-friendly.

Best Laptop

Apple macbook air 13.6” laptop.

If you need to work on the road, this is lightweight yet reasonably powerful.

The base model only has 8GB of RAM.

If you're an Apple person, the newest MacBook Air is the best device for travelers. It has the ultra-fast M2 processing chip which is 1.4 times faster than the previous model, the M1. And, as an Air, it's lighter than the standard MacBook or MacBook Pro models which is always helpful when traveling. However, what we really love about the newest MacBook Air is that it's returned to a magnetic charging port, so you don't have to worry about accidentally ripping out your charging cable or pulling down a laptop if you trip over the cord.

Best Tablet

Apple 10.9” ipad (9th generation).

Since it's not the newest model, it's usually on sale.

It's best for entertainment rather than intense productivity.

Some planes aren't equipped with built-in in-flight entertainment systems, which means you should probably bring a tablet on your next trip . We're partial to the Apple iPad, specifically, not the latest model for one simple reason: it's usually on sale. Unless you plan on working from your iPad, in which case you'd probably want to upgrade to something more powerful or even a laptop, this one will do just fine for things like watching movies and shows. It'll still work for other tasks where a screen larger than a phone comes in handy, like sending email, making notes, and even taking photos.

Best DSLR Camera

Sony alpha 7r v.

It takes both excellent stills and video, thanks to its 61 megapixels and 8K video quality.

Lenses must be purchased separately.

For those seriously interested in photography and videography, you can't go wrong with the Sony Alpha 7R V. Ultimately, it has extremely high-quality imagery and video that works on a professional level. We're also impressed with its smart features, including fast Wi-Fi, real-time auto video tracking, and accurate subject recognition. And, for travelers, it's fairly lightweight for a DSLR, and it has a long battery life. Just know that it’s on the more expensive side if you’re just dabbling and the price does not include any lenses.

Best Point-and-shoot Camera

Sony rx100 iii 20.1 mp premium compact digital camera.

It's highly portable.

It's pricey for a point-and-shoot, though it does offer superior quality.

For more casual travel photographers, a point-and-shoot camera like the Sony RX100 III is an easier-to-use, more-travel-friendly option than a DSLR with much higher quality than a smartphone. It's still a smart camera, with built-in WiFi, a touch screen, and continuous autofocus to use in video mode, but it's far smaller and more lightweight than a DSLR. One feature we particularly like is its zoom — the built-in Leica lens has a 24–720-millimeter zoom range.

Best Portable Speaker

Ultimate ears wonderboom 3.

It offers bold sound for such a compact size.

It can be tricky to connect with other Wonderboom speakers (for surround sound).

Headphones are great for solo listening, but if you're with a group, you're going to need a portable speaker. We love the Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 3, first and foremost, for the small size and loud, crisp sound, but, second, for its waterproof and dustproof nature. That means it's perfectly fine to take this on a more rugged journey into the woods or to a beach party, or toss it in a backpack without concern. If you want to amplify the noise, you can connect it to multiple Wonderboom speakers, though we found the process a little bit complicated.

Best Portable Monitor

Asus zenscreen go 15.6" ips lcd fhd monitor.

It has a 3.5-hour battery life.

It's portable, but heavier than other portable monitors.

Nothing beats a multi-screen set-up in your office, but bringing multiple screens on the go isn't realistically feasible. Or is it? Enter: the portable monitor. ASUS ZenScreen is a 15.6-inch screen with an adjustable kickstand that can easily be set up as a second monitor with its included adapters. Or you can use it as a larger screen to stream from your phone, thanks to wireless mirroring capabilities with Apple, Android, and Google. Perhaps most impressively, it can run on battery power alone for up to 3.5 hours.

Best Folding Keyboard

Samsers foldable bluetooth keyboard.

It can be used for various devices, including your phone.

The included stand is only designed for phones, not tablets.

For people who have to type lengthy emails, articles, or notes during their travels, sometimes the touchscreen keyboard of your phone or tablet doesn't cut it. If you'd like to leave your laptop behind but still have full typing capabilities, you'll want to pack this foldable Bluetooth keyboard . It's super compact, lightweight, and long-lasting (up to 40 hours of use on a single charge), but it unfurls to a full keyboard size.

Best Mini Photo Printer

Canon selphy square qx10 compact photo printer.

The photos are printed with a peel-off adhesive backing.

You can only print square photos.

Turn any camera into an instant camera with this portable photo printer. The Canon Selphy QX10 prints images on 2.7 x 2.7, adhesive-backed photo paper, making it easy to stick them into a notebook or onto a wall. If you download the Canon Selphy app, available on both iPhone and Android, you can even create multi-photo layouts and add effects, filters, and stickers to your images before printing.

Best Portable Sound Machine

Babelio white noise machine.

It's truly pocket-sized — and cheap!

You can't add your own sounds, as they're all pre-programmed.

Can't sleep without white noise? Bring this teensy portable sound machine with you on your next trip. There are 15 sound options on the device, which rain from white and pink ambient sounds to natural sounds like waves and rain. The battery will last the whole night (charged by a USB-C port), or you can set a timer for 30 or 60 minutes to automatically shut the sound machine off.

Best Headphone Adapter

Twelve south airfly pro.

It connects wireless headphones to in-flight entertainment systems.

Sometimes there's a slight lag in the audio.

While many headphone-wearers have cut cords and opted for wireless earbuds or headphones, in-flight entertainment systems on planes are still largely wired (though cabins are slowly debuting wireless audio capabilities!). Not only are they wired, but they're only compatible with a traditional 3.5-millimeter headphone jack. Fortunately, there's AirFly, a device that transmits audio from that jack to your wireless headphones via Bluetooth. It has up to 20 hours of battery life, which pretty much covers every flight in the world.

Best Tech Organizer

Bagsmart cable organizer bag.

There are multiple loops and pouches for cables, as well as pockets for memory cards.

It's not particularly small, so if you only have a few items to store, you might want to pick a more petite model.

Cords tend to get tangled in transit, so keep all your chargers nice and tidy with a tech organizer . This one has a variety of pouches and loops that can be used to keep your cords separate, as well as pockets for other small tech gizmos, like a Lightning to USB adapter or lightning to audio jack adapter. There's a spot for everything in this organizer, which makes it a touch bulky. You can always opt for a smaller version if you don't think you'll fill this one.

Best Laptop Backpack

Solo re:define backpack.

It has a compact silhouette but a sneakily large interior.

We noticed a zipper fraying after four months of use.

If you're traveling with a laptop, you'll definitely want some sort of bag or carrying case to store it in. Because laptops can be fairly heavy — or at least feel heavy after lugging them around all day — we recommend a laptop backpack. In our tests , we ranked Solo's Re:Define Laptop Backpack quite highly, praising it for its slim look yet surprisingly spacious interior. Then, of course, there's a padded laptop pocket that can fit devices up to 15.6 inches in size. With its sleek look, we think the bag is great for both students and commuters, but it'll also fare well on leisure trips, too.

Tips for Buying Travel Tech Essentials

Prioritize convenience, entertainment, or both.

Typically, travel tech essentials should either make things more convenient as you travel, or provide entertainment on a long day or during downtime at your destination. Of course, exact purposes vary but, before deciding to buy (or pack) any travel tech items, consider their portability as well as how much use you’ll get out of each pick as space is often limited on the go.

Plan for your organizational needs

Remember that you're going to have to store your travel tech somewhere so have an organizational plan in mind for the items you plan to bring. You can do this with bags with numerous pockets, such as easy-access ones where you can stash things you might need to take out frequently, such as your passport or headphones. Or you can store important items in smaller bags that go into bigger ones such as a cord organizer or travel pouch .

Consider your mode of transportation, your destination, and your itinerary. Are you packing essentials for a road trip , or taking a plane or train? If you have limited space, you may want to watch movies on your phone with a pair of earbuds. If you plan on taking long train rides or red-eye flights, on-ear, noise-canceling headphones may be an item you’ll want to leave space for in your bag. If you’re traveling for long periods and plan to work, a laptop or tablet and portable keyboard can come in handy, and if you know you’ll have a bunch of travel tech items, having some sort of organizer or a backpack with ample pockets will be key.

It's advisable to avoid bringing delicate and heavy items — the hardier and more lightweight, the better. Plus, remember that not all items can be taken on the road, specifically on planes. Lithium batteries and portable power banks, for example, cannot be stored in checked bags and must be brought with you in the cabin.

When flying, travelers commonly appreciate bringing headphones, headphone adapters, and portable entertainment like a tablet loaded with shows or movies or an eReader.
