'Star Trek: Voyager's' triumphant creation stars in crowdfunded documentary 'To the Journey'

Engage this new teaser for the upcoming doc project "To the Journey: Looking Back at Star Trek: Voyager."

These are grand times to be a "Star Trek" fan, as the rising tide of new "Trek" TV series, classic show anniversaries, concept art books, tie-in novels, video games and comics set in the Starfleet sphere are all contributing to a blossoming renaissance of interest.

Riding that surging swell is an upcoming documentary on the making of one of the most popular "Star Trek: The Next Generation" spinoffs, "Star Trek: Voyager."

A new teaser video for "To the Journey: Looking Back at Star Trek: Voyager" was recently released to give followers of the pioneering series a hint of what's to come. The show, which ran from 1995 to 2001 on UPN, lasted for 172 episodes over seven seasons and depicted the USS Voyager's endeavors while traversing the galaxy's remote Delta Quadrant.

You can check out our Star Trek streaming guide to see where to watch "Star Trek: Voyager" and any other Trek series that may catch your fancy. That includes " Star Trek: Discovery, " " Star T rek: Picard " and a preview for the May 5 release of " Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. "

Star Trek: Voyager

"Voyager" represented milestones in "Star Trek" lore as it became the first series to feature a female commander, with Kate Mulgrew 's solid performance as Capt. Kathryn Janeway , as well as the only Asian male co-starring as a series regular at the time, with Garrett Wang (Ensign Kim). The new making-of retrospective highlights that "Voyager's" unique cast chemistry remains intact after 20 years.

Packed with fresh interview snippets with cast members Wang, Robert Duncan McNeill, Robert Beltran, Ethan Phillips, Tim Russ, Robert Picardo and Kate Mulgrew, in addition to "Voyager" executive producers Jeri Taylor and Rick Berman, this project's preview promises a definitive exploration of how this successful spinoff was created and has endured.

"To the Journey: Looking Back at Star Trek: Voyager" has been years in the making, as producer/director David Zappone first announced back in early 2020 that shooting would start aboard Star Trek: The Cruise. The COVID-19 pandemic put a swift but temporary halt to those plans, and filming picked up in late 2020.

A crowdfunding effort provided more momentum in March 2021, when the campaign blasted through its goal of $150,000 less than a day after it launched, eventually collecting over $1.3 million — the most money ever pledged for a crowdfunded documentary.

"To the Journey" is currently moving into the final stages of production, and the documentary is slated to start appearing at fan events and on streaming services, and will become available for purchase in late 2022.

TREKCORE: What stage is the Voyager documentary at now, with your first interviews coming just before pandemic lockdowns started happening throughout the world — and what are your current priorities for the project?

ZAPPONE: We didn’t stop totally during COVID. I have to say we also couldn’t have done it without Garrett Wang (Harry Kim). Garrett has been such a supporter, and helped us with the launch immensely, as you’ve probably seen on social media and in our pitch video, and Tim Russ (Tuvok) and Robbie McNeill (Tom Paris), and Ethan Phillips (Neelix), Alice Krige (Borg Queen), everyone, and let’s not forget Connor! That’s actually my favorite part of the– [laughs] Just when Connor Trinneer ( Enterprise’s Trip Tucker). pops up.

We filmed a very extensive interview during COVID with Garrett — in person, because I do not want to resort to Zoom for this production — and we were able to get a very extensive interview with Robbie McNeil before he left for directing work in Canada. Others too, like Brannon Braga and Andre Bormanis.

I did not want to stop totally during the pandemic, and lose our momentum. We have done some interviews but now it’s akin to Deep Space Nine. We went into the crowdfunding with a good amount of it under our belt but this allows us to now do this right.

We are now looking at studios, we are hopefully going to be able to build a set to film in-person interviews like we did with What We Left Behind . Our priority now is really logistics, figuring out where to shoot.

The difference here is this cast is a bit spread out over the country. We might need multiple stages. I intend to do what we did with What We Left Behind . I’m not going to limit it to just the actors.

We’re about to interview series co-creator and showrunner Jeri Taylor; as many people know she hasn’t contributed to anything like this in a long time, but we’re going to be traveling to her and interviewing her in person. Rick Berman has already said yes.

We intend to go hopefully as deep into the production side and the writing side, as we did in What We Left Behind .

the star trek voyager documentary

TREKCORE: You’re still early in to the ‘story’ development for the film, but do you have particular parts of Voyager’s history that you’re already eager to dive into — like Mulgrew’s turn as the first lead-role female captain?

ZAPPONE: Absolutely. Yes, you hit it right there. It’s the influence of these incredibly strong women on that show. Of course, it’s primarily Kate, but it’s Roxann Dawson (Torres), Jeri Ryan, and I would argue for Jennifer Lien (Kes) in the early seasons. Yes, the impact of how that changed television, and how that led to this whole revolution in STEM for women. That’s an avenue that we’re going to be exploring.

The other thing that’s interesting to me is the fact that the show was on a network it helped launch — UPN — I want to delve into that and the pressures that the producers were feeling… but I’m hoping to get the Paramount-side point of view as well.

But it’s really is up to the people that were involved — and where those stories take us — that will determine our role. I never go into these documentaries with a roadmap. We have an idea of the questions that we want to ask, but really, it’s going to depend on where the interviews take us.

TREKCORE: Several of us have been speculating wildly about the million-dollar “never-before-seen Voyager surprise” teased on the Indieogogo campaign… any hints?

ZAPPONE: I wish I could get into detail, but I really can’t.

From the Deep Space Nine film, I learned that this kind of project can’t just be talking heads; you can’t just cut from interview to interview to interview to interview to episode clip. We need something more than that, and for  What We Left Behind , the “DS9 Season 8 Writers’ Room” segment gave us that.

For Voyager , the truth is, we’re not sure yet exactly what kind of ‘surprise’ we are going to do — because we don’t own Star Trek . I will say, though, that we’re hoping to do something with the actors themselves, which will take a lot of negotiation and approval.

We have very high aspirations!

TREKCORE: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about Voyager from the work you’ve done so far for the documentary?

ZAPPONE: Well, certainly, I’d heard what everybody else heard which is, “Oh, Voyager was not that great.” “The cast doesn’t get along.” I heard all these rumors. I was a fan from the jump, from 1995. I was in. I didn’t believe any of that. I knew the show was quality. There’s so much crossover between the creative from Deep Space Nine , Next Generation , Voyager , it’s the same group.

But also, being told by some people, “Well, there’s not a strong enough fan base for Voyager .” That’s the biggest surprise — and wow, did they underestimate the passion of these fans!

Let me just touch on the Star Trek Cruise . I can’t tell you how fortunate we are to have been on that last year — it was the only physical reunion that the Voyager cast had, since everything else was cancelled by the pandemic. More than that, the company that runs the Star Trek cruise let us use their Broadway-quality theater that they have on the ship.

The days on that ship were some of the longest days I’ve ever had in production. We were working 18 hour days, and happily. We just invited fans to come in and just tell us about what Voyager meant to you. That’s where I realized that  Voyager fandom really runs deem — and it’s got a lot of younger people in it, too

It’s not just people my age who watched it the first time around, it’s garnered an entire fandom, just like Deep Space Nine , an entirely new fan base from streaming. I think the episodic nature of Voyager lends to that. Yes, the metric that I’ve heard and everybody’s heard is that I think six out of the top 10 streamed Star Trek episodes on Netflix are Voyager . Now I get it.

the star trek voyager documentary

TREKCORE: Will the film touch on the “continuing voyages” of the  Voyager crew — like Jeri Ryan coming back for Picard and Kate Mulgrew returning for Prodigy ?

ZAPPONE: Oh, absolutely — I can’t imagine that we would not cover that. I’m not going to limit it and just stop at “Endgame,” because the story doesn’t stop there. I mean did you see that terrific animated Janeway in the First Contact Day panels?

And what is she holding? That iconic coffee cup, which is proven to be one of our most popular Indiegogo perks — the demand for that coffee cup replica was one of the biggest surprises of the fundraiser.

I wish I could take credit for that — but that came from Paul Camuso who runs the William Shatner store . He said to me, “You know, Dave, I know the company that made that coffee mug they used in  Voyager , and we can get them recreated. People will want that mug!”

I’m blown away by the success of it.

the star trek voyager documentary

TREKCORE: I’ve got to ask about your plans to remaster Voyager footage into high definition. Will you be using the same methods as you did for the DS9 documentary, assuming you get the green-light from CBS?

ZAPPONE: We’ve discussed everything with CBS and I can’t imagine that they’re going to have a problem with letting us move forward; they were thrilled with how well our DS9 remastering work turned out. We have so much DS9 footage, you wouldn’t believe how many hours we scanned.

That said, CBS Digital — the company that we used for the DS9 remastering, who also did the work for the  Next Generation Blu-ray project — no longer has their enormous scanning machines to scan the film, so now we need to find a new company and a new way to do this.

That part of the process is very difficult.

TREKCORE: We know that CBS doesn’t have easy access to a lot of the original Voyager CGI effects shots, because they didn’t have a preservation method in place.

ZAPPONE: No, and you you’d have a tough time finding computers to even run those. Those are all ancient computers at this point.

TREKCORE: Given that Voyager relied more heavily on CGI than Deep Space Nine did, is that going to make it more challenging to include some of the show’s effects sequences, like that high-def “Sacrifice of Angels” clip?

ZAPPONE: I don’t think so. Because we’re going to use the same brilliant effects people that we use on What We Left Behind . We have access to a lot of those original files through Ben Robinson, who runs the Star Trek Starships Collection for HeroCollector.

Plus, we’ve got people like Dan Curry, Mike and Denise Okuda… everybody is helping us. We’re going back to the original people that worked on the show to help us recreate these sequences.

I don’t think it’ll be any more difficult — at least I hope not.

TREKCORE: So with all that said, what’s the timeline look like for the project, from now to a world premiere?

ZAPPONE: Well, I’ve been kind of careful in my predictions, only because of COVID and what it’s done. I’m speaking to you from from Paramount Studios which for three months was closed down and we couldn’t access its facilities.

I was informed three hours before it was shut down last year, meaning our editor had to rush over here, grab all the computers, hard drives, and everything else, and get out — and if we hadn’t done that, we would have gone for months without anything to work with, even our footage from the cruise.

I’m very optimistic, now that vaccines are rolling out and things are opening up; I mean, things are looking pretty good here in Los Angeles. As long as we continue on this course, I’m hopeful for fall-winter of 2022.

the star trek voyager documentary

TREKCORE: Finally, with all you’ve worked on in your previous projects, and this  Voyager one… have you thought at all about turning your attention to  Star Trek: Enterprise ?

ZAPPONE: You know, I could be evasive, and give you some kind of cheeky answer — but of course, I would love to tell the story of Enterprise . Absolutely I would.

I’ve become very close with those actors. It didn’t go the seven years the other shows went, but they did amazing work in that series. I would be remiss, I think, in stopping here.

Yes, my intention is 100% to move on to Enterprise .

'Star Trek: Voyager' cast spills all the tea in new documentary trailer

From Kate Mulgrew to Garrett Wang, cast members reveal behind-the-scenes secrets of this iconic  Trek  series.

Star Trek: Voyager Cast

Star Trek: Voyager  is getting the documentary treatment and, if the first trailer for  To the Journey   is any indication, fans will be getting a very candid peek behind the curtain of the classic  Trek  series.

The extended trailer made its debut on TrekMovie.com this week, with nearly seven minutes of cast and crew interviews that provide a glimpse into the creative struggles and Hollywood headaches that surrounded Voyager 's seven-season run from January 1995 to May 2001. Captain Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew , offers a blunt recollection of her early days in the role, acting on set under the judgmental eyes of Paramount and then-UPN TV brass following the infamous departure of the show's original Janeway, French actor Geneviève Bujold.

Garrett Wong, who played Ensign Harry Kim, reveals that he was "the only Asian male series regular" on television at the time. Of any TV show. (And TV still has a long way to go to bridge that representation gap).

Other highlights include: Executive producers Jeri Taylor, Brannon Braga, and Rick Berman discussing the origins of the show and actor Robert Beltran, who played a member of the terrorist group the Maquis before becoming Janeway's first officer, shares insights into when former cast mate Jennifer Lien (who played Kes) was fired from the show.

To the Journey is set for release later in 2022. Watch the trailer below.

Star Trek: Voyager Documentary To the Journey Shares a Tantalizing First Look

Candid interviews look to highlight the in-production look back at the landmark trek series..

Kate Mulgrew wears a scarf and blazer, with a Starfleet uniform on a mannequin behind her.

Between Discovery (which just concluded its fourth season ), the ongoing second season of Picard , the hype ahead of Strange New Worlds , and the spiffy new release of 1978's Star Trek: The Motion Picture , one might start to feel a little overstuffed on all things Trek . But here’s something to change your mind.

Trekmovie.com shared a fresh peek at To the Journey , a new documentary about Star Trek: Voyager made by the same folks who created 2018's affectionate, in-depth look at Deep Space Nine , What We Left Behind . (This is not to be confused with The Center Seat , another new Trek documentary; that one’s coming to the History Channel this fall.) This latest missive is classified as a “teaser” but is actually a robust six-minute clip.

To really appreciate that clip, you kind of have to be a Voyager fan, since nobody is identified by name and if you hadn’t seen the show you might not immediately recognize Tim Russ, Garrett Wang, Robert Beltran, Robert Duncan McNeill , Ethan Phillips, or Robert Picardo—though we’re going assume you instantly know who Kate “ Captain Janeway ” Mulgrew is! (There’s also some bonus George Takei, talking about Gene Roddenberry’s influence.) But you can just tell from their contributions that To the Journey is going to be a detailed, decidedly candid, and at times gloves-off look at this chapter in Trek history.

The film’s website says To the Journey is “the most crowdfunded documentary film to date” (you can still support it though, if you want to get your own “ Tuvok Rocks !” t-shirt or any of the other perks), having raised $1.2 million —a budget that no doubt helped the crew gather so many interviews for the project. To the Journey is still in production, but once we learn more about a release date we will let you know.

To The Journey: Looking Back at Star Trek: Voyager

  • View history

To The Journey: Looking Back at Star Trek: Voyager is an upcoming production from David Zappone 's 455 Films [1] and Le Big Boss Productions (Canada) [2] set to examine what made Star Trek: Voyager special twenty-five years after the series premiere, through new interviews with the cast and crew. The documentary conception came about because of the success of Zappone's prior Star Trek: Deep Space Nine documentary, What We Left Behind . [3]

The working title had previously been A Long Way Home: The Star Trek Voyager Documentary . [4] By March 2021, the film was being reported as yet untitled. [5]

Fundraising campaign [ ]

Production launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign on 1 March 2021 , raising more than $450,000 in the first twenty-four hours. [6] By 15 March 2021 , the campaign had become the most successful Indiegogo documentary campaign ever, reaching more than US$740,000. On March 28, the campaign funding reached and exceeded one million dollars. [7]

Features made possible by having reached various fundraising goals include additional 3D graphics and animations, filming a November 2021 cast reunion in London, expanding the film from 60 to 90+ minutes, composition of an original score for the film, and licensing the original title music from Jerry Goldsmith . [8]

The Indiegogo concluded on 31 March 2021 , having collected $1,260,245 from 11,728 backers, almost double the $630,000 raised by What We Left Behind , and breaking the record for most successful crowdfunded documentary (a title previously held by Who the F*@% is Frank Zappa (Save the Vault, Tell the Story) , at $1,126,036.) ‘Star Trek: Voyager’ Documentary To Start Crowdfunding Pre-Orders In March

the star trek voyager documentary

| January 2, 2021 | By: TrekMovie.com Staff 20 comments so far

455 Films, the team behind the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine documentary What We Left Behind , are currently working on a new project, this time focusing on Star Trek: Voyager . Production began in March 2020, and after taking a hiatus due to the pandemic, resumed later in the year . And now 455 just announced the next step for the Voyager documentary.

Pre-order crowdfunding campaign kicks off in March.

During the Virtual Trek Con yesterday, 455 Films announced a new crowdfunding campaign in support of the Voyager documentary is coming on March 1st. Just like with the DS9 Documentary campaign, you will have the opportunity to pre-order the documentary and get additional supporter rewards. Watch the video announcement from Voyager star Garrett Wang below:

Appearing on TrekMovie’s Shuttle Pod in November , Voyager documentary producer David Zappone gave an update on the production:

We have interviewed several of the main cast separately. We just did an interview with Brannon Braga, a very extensive one. We plan to interview Jeri Taylor and Rick Berman and get each one of the cast members individually. It is going to take a little longer than it normally would have, but we will get there.

He also talked about why they’re interested in crowdfunding:

Absolutely, I would love to do [including remastered HD footage] again, but I have a feeling it would take another crowdfunding campaign. The people need to approve. I can’t convince CBS 100% they want to see. They need to help us to show CBS the desire is there. I would love nothing better. We have the team, we know how to do it. It is time-consuming, but it’s not impossible.

Producer: “COVID be damned, we’re going to make this film.”

Yesterday Zappone and Joe Kornbrodt participated in a panel during the Virtual Trek Con. They talked about their work on Star Trek documentaries, including briefly discussing the upcoming Voyager doc. Zappone gave an update on how they are continuing to work, doing both in-person and Zoom interviews during the pandemic.

Brannon Braga And ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Producers Talk Janeway And “Complicated” Chakotay Relationship

This one is interesting to me, even though I’m not really a “Voyager” fan (watching it back in the day it always felt inferior to “Deep Space Nine”), but the behind-the-scenes stuff would be interesting to delve into especially all these years later.

-The problems between Jeri Ryan and Kate Mulgrew.

-Looking back at Chakotay. I know Robert Beltran had issues with the way the character was handled. And looking at it now, the character is VERY problematic. It’s arguably a case where an attempt at diversity now looks really outdated and borderline offensive, since the characterization of Native Americans sets them apart from humanity, says their origins are quasi-alien, and ascribes special powers to an entire ethnic group.

-I believe Garrett Wang has had his own issues with how Harry Kim was developed by the show.

Good point about Chakotay. Even crazier when it was discovered the ‘consultant’ for the show about Native Americans admitted to making a lot of it up years later lol. How does something like that happen?? But I would love to hear Beltran’s issues with the show and character too and I LOVED Chakotay. But it’s no doubt that character would be done very differently today for sure.

This isn’t a question of hindsight being 20/20. The problems with Chakotay were obvious from day 1: the lack of any tribal enrollment, the “Hollywood Indian” trope, the softening of Maquis settler colonialism with a patina of Native American culture, the Maori tattoo being passed off as Native….it just goes on and on. They should have hired a Native actor.

Yeah this is something Hollywood has done for a long long time. In TOS they hired a white Mexican actor to play Khan and darkened his skin to fit the role more. It is funny how iconic Khan is now but it’s no way that would’ve happened today (and we won’t even get into Cumberbatch playing Khan lol) but this is a long held tradition that has been around a long time. None of it is right but sadly part of a very common tradition.

Again I loved Chakotay and I liked the idea of a Native American character in the role, but they should’ve started with hiring a real Native American actor and made the role more accurate in general.

I don’t consider this “alien” origin as problematic at all since it has been established on Trek that all human(oid) life in the galaxy is basically alien in origin. The First Ones planted the seed millennia ago (just like the Engineers in the Alien universe) as it was established in TNG’s “The Chase”… According to Trek lore, we are all made of stardust and all humans and humanoids deserve dignity. That is Trek’s basic message. An extra portion of alien origin for the Native Americans does not take away any of that.

I do wonder how much of that they would actually explore. As lovely as the doc was, What We Left Behind didn’t really dig into many negative behind the scenes drama. Even Terry Farrell’s departure is milked for some tears, but no depth. Having Behr be so involved may well have made participants be a little more reserved in that regard.

Mulgrew, Beltran, Wang and Ryan have all been fairly forthright in discussing the downside to their times on the show, so I would think they’d have plenty of material to pick from. But the show does seem to have had a very positive influence on a whole new generation of fans, so there’s plenty of nice things for them to be able to tout.

HOW DARE YOU SAY VOYAGER IS INFERIOR!!!! ;)

So exciting they are making the Voyager documentary!!

And it’s the same team behind What We Left Behind. I do think it will be a lot different from that because Ira Steven Behr had so much influence on that documentary himself. It was very much about his POV of the show as the show itself. He was actually interviewing other actors and writers on the doc as well. As far as I know, we haven’t heard directly about Rick Berman, Jeri Taylor, Brannon Braga or Kenneth Biller. These were either all the creators of and/or show runners of Voyager at some point. I’m sure some will be part of it and at least interviewed like Rick Berman was for WWLB, but it doesn’t sound like any will be directly involved like Behr was.

I always loved Voyager. In fact Voyager, to this day, was the only Trek spin off I completely loved after its first season (until Lower Decks, but I view that a bit differently). However I never loved the show as much as I did TNG, DS9, etc. It’s a flawed show for sure, but watching the newest Trek shows, it’s in great company lol.

Anway, thanks for the article TM. This is going to be another fun thing to keep track of like we have so much of in Star Trek today. Maybe it’ll get a small theater run like WWLB did!

I LOVE VOY and this sounds exciting BUT do we really need crowdfunding for something like that? It’s a shame we haven’t seen DS9 and VOY in HD on Blu-Ray and it’s a shame they don’t even bother producing offical documentaries like that. DS9 and VOY deserve better. I’m grateful Trek is back with new TV shows but they really shouldn’t forget about the rest of the legacy. Interesting: Netflix seems to aggressively advertize VOY after watching DSC. They know what a gem that show was (though not nearly perfect).

I agree. I don’t think Voyager rises to the level of getting my fan donation.

” Interesting: Netflix seems to aggressively advertize VOY after watching DSC”

It’s because of the Borg. People are nuts about them especially Seven of Nine. They bring plenty of eyeballs.

YES WE DO GARTH!!! YES WE DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And maybe later they will both the HD treatment but that is probably still years away!

Apparently Voyager, as a non-serialized show, is streamed more frequently than DS9, even though DS9 did get a boost from the current binge culture. I’ve not seen metrics that prove any of this, but it’s been pointed out to me here.

I would certainly think DS9 is a better follow up to Discovery based on tone and content, but I’m no algorithm!

I think 7of9s appearance in Picard brought some attention to the show.

Love Voyager. This is going to be fun.

Long live Voyager

I’m in.

I wonder what they’ll choose as a starship name this time.

I hope they interview Ron Moore about his very short time on the Voyager, the fall-out he had with Brannon Braga, and the post-interviews he did that bashed the concept of the show. That is some juicy stuff.

I am looking forward to this. I hope it gets made.

It would be nice if we could get just one episode of DS9 and Voyager on blu-ray, I guess that will never see that after the cost and low sales of TNG.

Star trek: discovery reveals a voyager enemy played a big role in the temporal wars.

Rayner reveals the links between Star Trek: Discovery's time bug and a deep-cut Star Trek: Voyager enemy, tying them to the Temporal Wars.

WARNING: Contains SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange"

  • Commander Rayner reveals the Krenim's role in Temporal Wars in Star Trek: Discovery S5E4, connecting Star Trek's past to the future of the USS Discovery.
  • The Krenim's advanced technology creates a time bug in Discovery, tying them to Temporal Wars as arms dealers or major power.
  • Star Trek: Discovery raises questions about the Krenim's alignment in Temporal Wars, hinting at possible alliances with the Federation and the Delta Quadrant.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4, "Face the Strange", Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) confirms that a Star Trek: Voyager enemy played a huge role during the Temporal Wars. "Face the Strange", written by Sean Cochran and directed by Lee Rose, finds Rayner, Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp) cycling through moments from the USS Discovery's past and future. The trio's temporal predicament is caused by a time bug, a device that is designed to trap its target inside their own timestream, allowing Moll (Eve Harlow) and L'ak (Elias Toufexis) to get ahead of Discovery.

Star Trek: Discovery 's time bug was created by the Krenim, a technologically advanced species first encountered by the USS Voyager . In Star Trek: Voyager season 4, episodes 8 and 9, "Year of Hell", Captain Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) and the USS Voyager were devastated by a year-long conflict with a temporal scientist called Annorax, (Kurtwood Smith). The Krenim's mastery of temporal technology was incredibly advanced even in the 24th century. Now Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4 reveals that, centuries later, they were still a force to be reckoned with during the Temporal Wars.

Voyager Is Why Star Trek Is Replacing Discovery’s Spore Drive

Discovery reveals voyager's krenim played a big role in star trek's temporal wars.

Star Trek: Discovery 's time bug is just a nickname, the device is referred to as a " Krenim chronphage " and Rayner states that they're " left over from the Temporal War ." This heavily implies that the Krenim were a big player in the Temporal Wars, first introduced in Star Trek: Enterprise . Whether the Krenim were involved in the fighting or merely providing weaponry is unclear, but the fact that the time bugs were being used in the conflict creates a direct link with Star Trek: Voyager 's race of temporal scientists.

It makes sense for the Krenim to be involved in Star Trek 's Temporal Wars , given how advanced their temporal technology must have become in the 500 years after their encounter with the USS Voyager. In "Year of Hell", the Krenim had built a weapon that could negate the existence of their enemies. Technology such as that would be of great interest to those involved in fighting the Temporal War. It's likely, therefore, that the Krenim were at least very successful arms dealers during the conflict, and at worst one of the Temporal War's major powers.

Whose Side Were Voyager's Krenim Enemies On In Star Trek's Temporal Wars?

Star Trek: Enterprise previously revealed that the Federation, the Na'kuhl, and the Sphere Builders were all in conflict during the Temporal War . The Krenim weren't named during Enterprise , so Star Trek: Discovery 's revelations about the use of their technology raises questions about whose side they were on during the Temporal Wars. If they weren't, as Enterprise suggests, an opposing power, then they must have been allied to someone. It's possible that once the Federation began expanding into the Delta Quadrant they formed an alliance with the Krenim, making them allies during the Temporal War.

In Star Trek: Discovery , Rayner specifically states that Krenim time bugs are sold on the black market, in reference to the Federation outlawing temporal technology. Non-Federation species wouldn't be tied to this restriction, suggesting that the Krenim would become members in the 500 years after Star Trek: Voyager . With Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 set to return to the Delta Quadrant, it's possible that fans could soon get an update on the Krenim, and their future relationship with Starfleet and the Federation in the centuries before the Temporal Wars.

Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 will be released on Netflix later in 2024.

Star Trek: Discovery is an entry in the legendary Sci-Fi franchise, set ten years before the original Star Trek series events. The show centers around Commander Michael Burnham, assigned to the USS Discovery, where the crew attempts to prevent a Klingon war while traveling through the vast reaches of space.

Star Trek: Voyager

The fifth entry in the Star Trek franchise, Star Trek: Voyager, is a sci-fi series that sees the crew of the USS Voyager on a long journey back to their home after finding themselves stranded at the far ends of the Milky Way Galaxy. Led by Captain Kathryn Janeway, the series follows the crew as they embark through truly uncharted areas of space, with new species, friends, foes, and mysteries to solve as they wrestle with the politics of a crew in a situation they've never faced before.

Star Trek: Enterprise

Star Trek: Enterprise acts as a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series, detailing the voyages of the original crew of the Starship Enterprise in the 22nd century, a hundred years before Captain Kirk commanded the ship. Enterprise was the sixth series in the Star Trek franchise overall, and the final series before a twelve-year hiatus until the premiere of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017. The series stars Scott Bakula as Captain Jonathan Archer, with an ensemble cast that includes John Billingsley, Jolene Blalock, Dominic Keating, Anthony Montgomery, Linda Park, and Connor Trinneer.

Sarah Silverman's Surprising Reason For Appearing In Star Trek: Voyager Explained

  • Sarah Silverman chose to act on Star Trek: Voyager instead of other offered sitcom roles because she felt the acting challenge was better.
  • Silverman's character Rain Robinson was comedic yet nuanced, bringing a lot to Voyager's "Future's End"
  • Silverman was a perfect fit for Voyager and left a lasting impact on the show.

Sarah Silverman had a surprising reason for agreeing to her guest appearance in Star Trek: Voyager season 3. Star Trek TV shows have been known to attract some impressive guest stars over the years, and Silverman is no exception. The actor and comedian is mostly famous for her stand-up but also has many television and film roles under her belt. One of Silverman's earliest TV roles was in Voyager season 3, episodes 8 and 9, "Future's End Parts I&II."

Silverman joined Voyager 's cast of characters as Rain Robinson, a 20th-century scientist whom Voyager 's crew encountered after traveling back in time to 1990s Los Angeles. Rain mainly spent the episode with Tom Paris (Robert Duncan McNeill) and Tuvok (Tim Russ) after the two became stranded on Earth during a reconnaissance mission. Although Silverman might seem like an odd choice for a show that was technically a drama, the actor had a surprising reason for wanting to do the role .

Every Voyager Character Who Has Returned In Star Trek (& How)

Sarah silverman explains her star trek: voyager guest role, silverman agreed to the role for a very specific reason.

Speaking to Star Trek Monthly around the time of the episode's release, Silverman stated that the reason she chose to appear in a Star Trek series was precisely because Voyager was a drama rather than a sitcom. According to Silverman, sitcom roles interested her less than a role like Voyager , which would allow her to include comedy but also wouldn't feel too unrealistic and could help her approach the role with nuance. Read Silverman's full quote below:

"I'm a stand-up comic too, so I am always sent situation comedies. I saw so much more potential for real humor in this Star Trek, and the opportunity to act a little bit more in the realm of reality than in a sitcom. I'm unhappy with almost one hundred percent of all sitcoms that are on. I'm just not interested in them. But to be able to do a show which is an hour-long that takes itself seriously enough that I can look at this character realistically, was just exciting. This was a person that you could go in a few different directions with, instead of like on a sitcom where the roles are so familiar already."

It is interesting that Silverman felt her role on Voyager would be more in the " realm of reality " given that Star Trek is science fiction . Voyager often dealt with situations that would never happen in real life, versus sitcoms which are almost always more grounded in premise. However, Silverman was seemingly less interested in the over-the-top comedic nature of sitcoms whereas something like Voyager could be a little more real with character dynamics . This can be seen in "Future's End" and is part of the reason Silverman was so wonderful in her Voyager role.

Why Silverman Was The Perfect Choice For Rain Robinson In Star Trek: Voyager’s “Future’s End”

Silverman brought some wonderful qualities to rain robinson.

Sarah Silverman ended up being the perfect choice to play Rain Robinson in "Future's End." The character was always going to be comedic on some level, so hiring a comedian to play her was ultimately a smart choice. However, what made Silverman so perfect was that she was able to balance the humorous moments in "Future's End" with a very human, nuanced portrayal of Rain , who as a 20th-century woman served as the audience surrogate to the Voyager characters she interacted with.

Star Trek has always walked a thin line between campy and serious storytelling, and this is demonstrated perfectly in "Future's End." Both Robinson and Silverman also walked this line with incredible finesse, and the character ended up improving on the role that was previously held by characters like Dr. Gillian Taylor in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home . Even though Sarah Silverman was only in one Star Trek: Voyager two-parter , she left an indelible mark on the show and is still quite a well-remembered guest star.

Sarah Silverman's Surprising Reason For Appearing In Star Trek: Voyager Explained

A Star Trek origin story movie is officially on the way from Andor and Black Mirror director

It's set to take place decades before 2009's Star Trek

Chris Pine in Star Trek Beyond

Paramount has officially announced a new Star Trek movie – but it's not Star Trek 4.

The Untitled Star Trek Origin Story was unveiled at CinemaCon, with J.J. Abrams set to produce (H/T The Wrap ). The film will take place decades before 2009's Star Trek, with Andor's Toby Haynes set to direct and Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter author Seth Grahame-Smith set to pen the script. Plot details have yet to be released. Deadline first announced the film earlier this year.

Haynes directed the popular Black Mirror episode U.S.S Callister, which acts as a Star Trek parody. Black Mirror season 7 will feature a sequel to U.S.S Callister , though it has not yet been announced who will direct.

Paramount also stated that the origin pic would begin production later this year to make it in time for a 2025 theatrical release. Star Trek 4, the sequel to Abrams' 2009 flick, is still in development. WandaVision's Matt Shakman was previously attached to direct, but  left the project  in August 2022  around the same time he was announced as the new Fantastic Four director. Last month, Variety reported that Sucker Punch and Supernatural writer Steve Yockey would pen the fourth Star Trek film, which intends to bring back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and the rest of the cast.

The Untitled Star Trek Origin Story does not yet have a release date. For more, check out our list of the most exciting upcoming movies in 2024 and beyond, or, skip right to the good stuff with our list of movie release dates .

I’m Still Annoyed Star Trek: Lower Decks Was Canceled, But There Is One Way This Could Turn Out To Be Good News

It's a long shot, but I want it to happen.

Rutherford and Boimler on Star Trek: Lower Decks on Paramount+

Last week, the Star Trek franchise delivered both good news and bad news. In the former category, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for Season 4 , so taking that into account with the fact that Season 3 won’t come out until 2025, fans can take comfort knowing one of the best Paramount+ TV shows will be sticking around for several more years. Conversely though, Star Trek: Lower Decks is ending with Season 5, which will premiere to Paramount+ subscribers on a yet-to-be-announced date on the 2024 TV schedule . I’m still annoyed that Lower Decks has been canceled, but there is on way that this could turn out to be good news: if its characters are being spun off into a live-action show.

In summer 2023, Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome, who voice Bradward Boimler and Beckett Mariner in Lower Decks , played their characters in live-action for the first time in the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode “Those Old Scientists.’ This Lower Decks / Strange New Worlds crossover saw Boimler and Mariner being transported back in time and meeting Captain Christopher Pike and his USS Enterprise crew, and Quaid and Newsome did a great job of balancing their characters’ comedic sensibilities without getting too wacky (though Newsome did admit to me there was one “Mariner-ism” she wasn’t able to replicate in live-action ). Naturally Boimler and Mariner made it back to the 24th century by the end of the episode, and at the time, I was hoping there might be another opportunity for them and the Strange New Worlds characters to reunite someday.

Star Trek: Lower Decks’ Mike McMahan Previews Season 5 Stories For Mariner And Other Main Characters

However, now that I know Star Trek: Lower Decks is ending, my fingers are crossed that Paramount+ will consider letting these starring characters shine on their own live-action platform. This would be uncharted territory, to be sure… one might even say it’s boldly going where no one in this franchise has gone before! But seriously, it was one thing for Star Trek: The Animated Series to spotlight Captain Kirk and his Enterprise cohorts from 1973 to 1974 following The Original Series ’ 1966-1968 run. Giving the Lower Decks cast their own live-action show would be a challenging feat, but one I’d like Paramount+ to undertake because characters deserve to be seen for more than just five seasons.

Now obviously a live-action take on Lower Decks would need some tweaks compared to the original. Namely, the cartoonish antics would need to be toned down, as there are many gags that play well in animation, but don’t translate effectively in live-action. There’s also the possibility that certain characters would need to be recast, whether it’s because it because of scheduling issues with the current voice actors or it’s decided that others is a better fit for playing these roles in live-action, as Star Wars has done with characters like Saw Gerrera and Ahsoka Tano. I imagine Jack Quaid and Tawny Newsome would be brought back as Boimler and Mariner, but we’d need to prepare for the possibility that folks like D’Vana Tendi and Sam Rutherford wouldn’t be respectively played by Noël Wells and Eugene Cordero.

But those hurdles aside, I think it’s worth Paramount+ taking the jump and moving Star Trek: Lower Decks from animation to live action. It would make for an intriguing experiment, and along with the animated show already having a sizable fanbase, this would be a great opportunity to loop in Star Trek fans who only pay attention to the live-action shows. If it doesn’t work out, then the streamer can cancel the new show too and call it a day, but if the show succeeds, then it opens up a new door for the franchise to venture into.

In any case, at least there’s one more season of Star Trek: Lower Decks to look forward to, and my fingers are crossed that if a live-action spinoff show isn’t in the cards, the writers have crafted a stellar ending. While we wait for the last batch of episodes, look over the upcoming Star Trek TV shows that are officially slated.
