Let's unlock the secret to smarter travel!

Hi, i'm emma - a travel obsessed nhs worker & mama of 2..., i'm here to help you travel a lot more, for a lot less, earning money from booking travel as you go.

Imagine earning back on every holiday you book, being part of the most successful Travel Brand in the UK, being equipped with absolutely everything you need to book your holidays at the best prices...

THIS IS OUR REALITY, AND CAN BE YOURS TOO!

Whether you just want to start travelling more as a family, stay in nicer hotels or start EARNING from booking travel for others - building up a side business or even generating a full time income, THIS IS FOR YOU!

Travelling Smarter is the way forward...

Every single time you book any element of travel online, you are currently giving away commission to the company you are booking through - commission is built into every online travel price you see, it's always been there. If you book travel through your own travel platform - YOU get the commission - it is that simple!

Through the Travel Business you will become a fully qualified ABTA and ATOL protected Travel Agent, with your very own booking system, your own website, and industry access to over 100 household supplier names within the industry, plus agent only access to some of the very best hotel brands across the world.

No previous travel industry experience is required, upon enrolment you will receive access to a fully bespoke training package, 24/7 agent support, private WhatsApp groups, all of the materials, templates and documents you could ever need to build a successful travel business, ongoing destination and supplier trainings plus the ability to specialise in a particular area of travel (if you so wish), along with personal introductions to some of the UK's top travel bookers.

From long-haul exotic, to short-haul / Europe and UK staycations (and everything in between) - you will be able to book every element of travel through your own booking portal, earning commission back on every single thing you ever book, as you go. Florida, Lapland, cruises, city breaks, attraction tickets, airport lounges, airport transfers, Christmas markets, flights, travel insurance, multicentre trips and tours - the options are quite literally, endless.

This is your business. You can take it wherever you want to go - booking just for yourself, family & friends, or building up a client base - it's entirely up to you!

No one is ever going to tell you otherwise.

I run a successful travel business (Elva Travel) alongside my almost full time NHS job, there are no targets or minimum sales quotas to meet - it is completely flexible and it's entirely up to you how many hours you spend on your business each week - it just works perfectly!

Plus it's a lot of fun working as an industry insider...

Meet some of our agents!

Hi! My name is Ali and I joined the travel business during COVID, January 2021. For me this was a great opportunity for me to do all my training and learn about our suppliers before travel picked up again.  February I made my first booking to South Africa.

I'm currently running my travel business along side my part time job and 3 children.

I'm currently running my travel business along side my part time job and 3 children. The days I'm not working, I'm running my own business, which I absolutely love.

2022 has been extremely busy for me, after COVID everyone wanted to travel.  I have booked over £327,000 worth of travel this year!!  This helped me take the No 1 travel agent position in the country under our host agency for October and November and since joining nearly 2 years ago I have made just over £22,000 worth of commission.

Overall, Dubai has been my No1 destination and for Europe it has been Turkey. I like to think of myself as a Turkey Specialist. This is where we love to go to most years for our family holiday. My husband and I like to have a little bit of luxury, whereas the children like to be entertained and the hotels that we have been fortunate to visit have so much to offer them, so we are all happy.

One thing I would say to anyone that would like to start their own travel business, do as much training as possible, get to know our suppliers and what they can offer and finally put in hard work. It will take time for your business to grow but if your passionate about what your doing, you will be rewarded.

I joined the travel business in September 2021 with the intention of just using it for my own travel and for booking travel for friends and family. At the beginning of 2022 I left my part time job to focus solely on booking travel for others.

To date, I have booked £173,000 with of travel for my clients, some of which are now regular boo

To date, I have booked £173,000 with of travel for my clients, some of which are now regular bookers.

My favourite type of travel bookings are multi centre holidays a with lots of stops in different destinations, I love helping my clients to build their dream holidays!

Hi my name is Sarah, and I love nothing more than exploring new places and making memories with my loved ones.

I’ve back packed around the world and worked on cruise ships, this sparked my love for travel and I now spend most of my time planning and taking as many trips as I can. Bora Bora is my dream destination.

I joined the travel bus

I joined the travel business in 2020, just as the pandemic hit! However this gave me an opportunity be able to complete as much  training as I possible could.  Therefore when the world ‘opened’ up once more I was armed with extra knowledge that enabled me to plan and book clients dream holidays. I do this alongside my full time job so I am able do as much or a little as I want to. I tend to book more long haul holidays, the Caribbean being a particular favourite destination for my clients. I earn commission back on everything I book!

“If we were meant to stay in one place we’d have roots instead of feet”

Hey! I'm Ellie. I absolutely love to travel, research destinations and explore new places. I want to see the world -

"I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list."

I started the travel business in January 2023 after going on five holidays the year before. I spoke to a very good friend who made me realise how much money i could have earnt in commission (I can't bear to think about it!) That was when I decided to join the travel business. I made my first personal booking within a few weeks of joining, and was shocked by how much money i earned back - the equivalent of 2 years worth of the travel subscription!!!

I run my travel business alongside being a busy mum of two and my almost full-time job as a school business manager in a local primary school. The travel business has allowed me to book more holidays for myself and my family, we get to stay in places and hotels we never could have considered before. Alongside this i get the exciting and really lovely job of researching and booking dream holidays for clients while earning a second income.

Hey my names Nicole! I’ve always adored travelling, always thinking and planning my next trip, so this was a complete no brainer for me.

Not only do I now have access to my very own agent booking system, I have exclusive insider access to over 100 household named travel suppliers, links to every luxury hotel in the world, ticketed event

Not only do I now have access to my very own agent booking system, I have exclusive insider access to over 100 household named travel suppliers, links to every luxury hotel in the world, ticketed events, villas…the list is endless!

AND I’m able to earn back on every single thing I now book - for myself, family and friends!

I made my first booking within a week of launching my business , and now am helping others to do the same, join me in the most exciting industry in the world – travel. You just need a love of holidays, we will give you all the support in the world, training from leading industry experts, everything you need to run a hugely successful business.

This can be life changing, if you want it to be.

Hey!! I'm Ceri, a Mummy of 2 young girls, I live with my husband and girls in Wiltshire (although I'm originally a London girl)!

I joined the travel business at the end of 2020, I had just been made redundant from my high-pressured corporate job at the end of my maternity, in a pandemic...

I joined as I realised my cost of travel was about to skyrocket with now having 2 children and financially we wouldn't be able to go away, the travel programme has changed that. Not only have we benefitted with being able to earn an income but joining also gave me something for me, I'm not just Mum!

I work my travel business part time (on and off, that's the beauty of it. It's your business so you have complete autonomy). Around my girls and my part time job in the NHS.

Since launching my business in mid 2021, I have booked almost £40,000 worth of travel. The majority of my bookings are for the UK and Europe! My favourite booking so far though has to be the Bahamas as it's up there on my bucket list, and it's always so special to do honeymoons. But honestly, I love them all, it's such a pleasure to be asked to help with someone's trip and my top tip for any new agent is make it personal , show what we have above the big corporates.

The business not only earns me a side income, but I can also now show my family the world , going to places we would not have been able to afford and stay in much nicer places, that before were out of our budget.

Next stop for us is Cyprus which is one of my absolute favourites!

I run this business alongside my full time job, joining in January of 2022 - it’s honestly been the best thing I have done for years!  I  have been able to travel much more on the same budget as a family.  This year we have had 6 holidays!  The highlight for me since joining has to be was being given the opportunity to go to the Wimbled

I run this business alongside my full time job, joining in January of 2022 - it’s honestly been the best thing I have done for years!  I  have been able to travel much more on the same budget as a family.  This year we have had 6 holidays!  The highlight for me since joining has to be was being given the opportunity to go to the Wimbledon final as an agent - a life long dream!  My favourite holiday destination so far has been Rome and I am planning to see more of Italy this year.  I’ve loved every minute of being part of the programme.

I am an entrepreneur with a business in healthcare and event planning, my passion for travel, good food, reading, music, and meeting new people has lead me to becoming an Independent Travel Agent.

I have enjoyed offering clients exceptional value and fun with holidays stemming from affordable family holidays right in their backyards, to those stemming across the nation, to popular destinations abroad, to high-end luxury vacations to be remembered, halfway around the world.

I have generated such a fantastic second income from booking travel for others - the business has enabled me to travel more than ever before with my family - I'm able to show them so much more of the world whilst doing what I love! What could be better than that!

Hi I'm Sammi! A mum of two living in East Yorkshire. I work from home as an entrepreneur and my passion is TRAVEL! I want to show my family as much of the world as possible!

I ultimately joined the travel business for earning back that commission !  Prices were (are!) hiking and I always had the perception that the nicer more luxurious places were just not affordable for me and my family...until now!

Although I’d previously travelled widely to places like Turkey, Florida, Egypt and Cyprus I had zero professional travel agency experience prior to starting with the business. Despite this, and due to the incredible support and bespoke training provided by the team, my travel business has flourished! We are all set up to succeed from Day 1!

I've been able to specialise in the areas of travel which interest me the most and feel completely confident in providing specialist insider advice and tips to my clients - I'm so grateful!

Working my travel business around my life has been super easy - primarily because it is just so flexible! I'm earning a “ Plan B ” / second income around my family life, and travelling more than I ever have before!

Like they say... the world is a book and if you don't travel, you will ever only see one page ... well...my family will never have a one-page restricted view solely because I woke up and grasped this programme with both hands!

Hi I’m Sophie!

My love for travel began when I moved to Australia as an exchange student as part of my degree. When I finished my degree, I went travelling around Australia and New Zealand and I was hooked -  I always have a trip booked…I just need more annual leave!

When I'm not travelling, I'm busy planning where to go next! I have a long list of countries and hotels I want to explore, and the travel business is allowing me to tick them off much quicker than I ever expected.

I joined the travel world in 2020 and it keeps getting better every year…. 2023 is going to be the best year yet for me in the travel business, I have booked the most incredible honeymoon to Dubai and Bali which wouldn’t of been possible without the access I have to the brands we do.

I just can’t keep it a secret anymore and I'm super excited to show my friends and family just how easy it is to go on far more holidays but actually EARN from booking travel for others too!

Hi, I’m Kate! I joined the travel business four months ago purely to travel more and experience more of the world.  When I realised how amazing this opportunity was, I instantly wanted to share it with others.   I’m a Mum of 3 boys, have a full- time corporate job in the city and I’m a director for my partner's scaffolding company.

I work on my travel business alongside my other commitments allowing me to earn an extra income and learn more about the world.

I’m looking to grow my business to allow me to work full time in the travel industry and help and mentor others to do the same.  This really is an opportunity not to miss out on!

Hi, I'm Michele, a mum of 2 boys.

I'm a driving instructor, a director of a children's soft play centre AND a travel business owner!

I started up my travel business just before the Pandemic purely because I wanted to be able to travel more with my children, and make more memories - I've never looked back! I just wished I'd jumped in sooner!

This works for me because it is 100% flexible, it just slots in around all of my other working and childcare commitments, plus - it's fun! It's never a chore to look for holidays!

We are now able to go on holiday 3/4 times a year, alongside more day trips and weekends away, all thanks to the additional income I'm earning from booking travel for friends and family (travel they'd be booking anyway!).

This truly is the best business to be a part of.

Hi I'm Victoria, an Independent Travel Consultant based in Woodbridge, Suffolk.

I am a Single Mum to Lucia, 10.

I have owned another business for 12 years, in which I work 3/4 days a week, although I have longed for another career path to fulfil my other days at home for some time now.

Over the years, I have had a huge passion for travel and exploring new destinations and cultures.

I have always taken control, great care, and enjoyment in planning my holidays over the years and have never been disappointed with my choices. I have always been particular about where I stay, and for that reason, I pay attention to every detail.

I live for travel and love a holiday; last year alone, I took eight holidays and enjoyed every moment, from the looking, booking, and the escaping; however, I get a little bored of packing and unpacking! I booked every element of each trip through my own travel system, earning fantastic commission back - this is how we travel smarter !

When I realised, I was able to set up my travel company and book travel for not just myself but others, it was an obvious choice. Getting paid to look for holidays and earning back on my own. I only wish I had known this sooner!

Hi, I’m Ashleigh, mum to one with another on the way! I’m a full time marketer with a love for travel & holidays.

I started my travel business a couple of years ago purely to earn back on my own travel but also to build an uncapped side income which will allow us to travel more than ever this year!

This opportunity is different to anyth

This opportunity is different to anything I’ve seen before and the support, guidance and community this program offers is fantastic!

If you’re looking for a new, completely flexible business opportunity - this is the one! Whether you're wanting this to be a full time job or something you do alongside other commitments, the possibilities are endless here - there are no targets, there is no contract, you are in charge of your own business - it just slots in around everything else you have going on!

Hi! My name is Myra, and I'm so excited to be part of this amazing team . I joined back in 2023, while I was on maternity leave – motherhood is amazing, but travel is my other true love!

Planning the perfect trip, whether it's the thrills of Orlando or the bright lights of Las Vegas (my two favourite destinations), is pure joy for me. I love packing in adventures and making every moment count when I am away. That's why I jumped at the chance to become a travel advisor!

The training is amazing, and I'm constantly learning about new destinations and experiences to share with everyone!

The best part? Helping people plan their dream trips! I love to be part of the excitement when clients book their adventures and hearing that they had the best time, is the ultimate reward.

The second best part is having the chance to earn while exploring the world – it's a win-win!

I love how flexible it is and I am able to fit everything around my own commitments.

It's an amazing opportunity - everyone should be involved!!

Hi, I’m Rachael! I’m a wife, a mummy to our gorgeous little boy & a dog mum to a cheeky little terrier!

I joined the travel business as my friend was already part of this brilliant team, having been recommended the business by her friend too! Everything I was being told seemed too good to be true but I knew I could trust my friends so I jumped in head first and here I am !!!

I only wish I’d joined sooner!

I am always the organiser in my family and friendship groups - if there’s talks of a trip or holiday, then you can bet I have a full itinerary planned quicker than you can find your passport!

I run my travel business alongside my (almost) full time job and it works for me because I choose the hours I work. I get out of this business as much as I put in and even if I didn’t do anything at all, nobody is there demanding I put more hours in.

I am my own boss and I love it!

Aside from all of the fun I have planning & booking holidays for other people, this has also given me the opportunity to earn an incredible second income, meaning I can now travel more than ever before... I am so excited to be able to show my son more of the world & take him on holidays that I could only have dreamed about before I joined!

How to Take the Ultimate Florida Keys Road Trip

The best beach bars, hotels, restaurants, and places to visit on a drive down Florida’s Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West.

A drive down Florida's Overseas Highway from Key Largo to Key West offers the perfect blend of eccentric bohemia and chic joie de vivre . As the mile markers decrease, Old Florida charm sharpens into focus. Strip malls hawking beach sundries and snorkeling tours along the upper reaches of U.S. 1 give way to dazzling turquoise flashes as the road becomes more bridge than highway. The route south is festooned with the Keys' ubiquitous kitsch — a giant, spiny lobster presides over a local arts village, lipsticked manatees clutch mailboxes, and hand painted mermaids tempt passersby with the promise of sunset cocktails.

You could drive the 113-mile stretch in a little over three hours, but why would you want to? Road trips , especially one as iconic as this, are all about the stops along the way. So put the top down and cue Jimmy Buffet. Here's our guide to the best the Florida Keys has to offer.

Ease yourself into the Keys' laidback vibe just south of Homestead with a detour onto Card Sound Road. A stop into Alabama Jack's is a must, especially if you're a first-timer. The scrappy, waterside seafood shack has been the Keys' unofficial welcome wagon since 1947 and serves some of the best conch fritters around. Live music and the line of Harleys outside add to the honky-tonk scene.

With your internal clock synced to island time, cruise over Card Sound Bridge and into Key Largo where you'll find John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park at mile marker 102.5. Explore the park's prolific marine life and a portion of the 360-mile Florida Reef Tract — North America's only living coral barrier reef — on a guided snorkeling tour . Or rent kayaks and head out for a paddle through miles of mangrove-lined wilderness trails.

Key Largo is at the epicenter of sustainability efforts in the Florida Keys, especially when it comes to reef health. At the Coral Restoration Foundation , researchers are rearing and planting corals in undersea nurseries. For a unique experience, snorkelers and divers looking to add an eco-tourism stint to their travels can assist scientists with outplanting and reef monitoring at active restorations sites.

After a day of sea and sun, check into the breezy Baker's Cay Resort , a lush retreat tucked into a secluded setting with gorgeous Florida Strait views. The resort partners with local environmental organizations to create eco-friendly guest programming. It was also the first resort in the Keys to join Reef Relief's " Skip the Straw " campaign.

You could easily spend a few days hopping around the string of tiny islands that make up Islamorada and while you do, The Moorings Village is the perfect place to call home.

Built on a former coconut plantation, the resort is home to eight private cottages nestled amidst tropical landscaping just steps from the Atlantic. Eight-hundred palm trees dot the property, and there's no shortage of hammocks for lounging beneath the verdant fronds.

Grab a paddleboard and head out for an ocean jaunt, watch the world go by from the cool shade of your porch, or while away a few hours by the gorgeous pool. If you can tear yourself away, single-speed beach cruisers are available for a pedal around town. Check out the galleries around the corner in the Morada Bay Arts and Cultural District — every third Thursday is the district's evening art walk — or pop into the beer garden at the Florida Keys Brewing Company for a hyper-local tasting flight.

Robbie's Marina , one of the Florida Keys' most iconic landmarks, sits on the tip of Lower Matecumbe Key, about five miles south at mile marker 77.5. The epitome of the archipelago's barefoot affability, Robbie's is a waterside shantytown of sorts that includes an outdoor marketplace, a marine sports outpost, and the Hungry Tarpon restaurant, named for the school of enormous silver fish that have been circling the docks for decades. Seven bucks will get you a bucket of bait and admission to the dock, and feeding the leaping, thrashing creatures provides a memorable diversion.

Afterwards, head out for an eco-tour through Islamorada's pristine waters with Captain Sam Zeher or just chill dockside with one of Robbie's Trailer Trash Bloody Marys, complete with a beef-jerky straw.

When the dinner hour beckons, shake the sand from your toes and head to Pierre's , an elegant plantation-style house with a wide verandah overlooking Florida Bay. A few miles north at Marker 88 , the chef serves the kind of super-fresh seafood one would expect to find in the sportfishing capital of the world. Tuck into cracked coconut-crusted shrimp and fresh Florida lobster on the outdoor patio with a glass of fruity Chardonnay — for a relaxed joint, Marker 88 has an excellent wine list. At either spot, the famous Keys sunset is guaranteed to put on a memorable show.

Even before Hemingway's old man took to the sea, the Keys were a saltwater angler's paradise, legendary for big game like sailfish, wahoo, and blue marlin. Though pulling a trophy fish from the ocean can be a thrill, sometimes the best part of casting a line is eating your catch later.

One of the best ways to do so is on a hook-and-cook adventure at Hawks Cay Resort on Duck Key, a pocket-sized island about 20 miles south of Islamorada. When it comes to relaxation, the resort offers a stunning adults-only enclave called Oasis Cay.

Get out onto the water with lifelong conch (i.e., Florida Keys native) Captain Dave Perry , who has been fishing the Keys for decades and runs charters out of the Hawks Cay Marina with Captain Justin Brunk. In addition to blue water hunting, the two specialize in fishing the reef for snapper and grouper, fish that can later be blackened, grilled, or fried for a hyper-local meal at Angler and Ale , the resort's dockside restaurant.

Connecting Marathon to the Lower Keys, the Seven-Mile Bridge is a highlight of any Keys road trip and driving it feels like being immersed in an ocean-themed movie. But before you do, take a ferry out to picturesque Pigeon Key for a dose of Keys history.

In the early 1900s, Florida tycoon Henry Flagler envisioned an Overseas Railroad linking mainland Florida to Key West. The project was nicknamed Flagler's Folly — no one believed his ambitious plan would come to fruition — yet, despite naysayers, the rail line was finished in 1912 complete with the engineering marvel that became the Seven-Mile Bridge. During the railroad's construction, more than 400 workers lived on Pigeon Key, which is now listed on the National Historic Register. Tours of the tiny island leave three times daily from the Pigeon Key Visitor's Center and offer a deep dive into the story of the railroad, its ill-fated demise, and the scenic highway travelers drive today.

The Lower Keys

Take a detour for some beach bliss at Bahia Honda State Park , a 524-acre swath of nature tucked between the Atlantic and the Gulf. Don't forget to drop by Sandspur Beach, long considered one of the best in the Keys.

On Big Pine Key, stop into the new Florida Keys National Wildlife Refuges Nature Center, which features exhibits spotlighting the Keys' four wildlife refuges including the nearby National Key Deer Refuge . Established in 1957, the refuge protects approximately 9,200 acres of land on Big Pine and No Name Keys that serves as habitat for endangered Key Deer. Stick to the speed limit around here — the diminutive creatures have been known to dart into the road, especially at dawn and dusk.

About 30 minutes south, you'll find authentic, Old Keys spirit on the docks of Geiger Key Marina at The Fish Camp . Founded by local restaurateurs Michelle and Bobby Mongelli, also behind the well-loved Hogfish Bar and Grill on nearby Stock Island, this open-air tiki bar and seafood joint claims to be on "the back side of paradise," which certainly feels accurate when you're sitting waterside with a plate of succulent Key West pink shrimp and a cold beer. The Sunday afternoon barbecue is legendary.

Head out to explore the labyrinth of waterways around Stock Island on a guided kayak tour with Lazy Dog Adventures . Trips leave from a tiny inlet on Cow Key Channel and wind through the mangrove tunnels and saltwater creeks hugging the edge of the Atlantic. The vibrant ecosystem provides a habitat for manatees, sea stars, tropical fish, and all kinds of shorebirds — many of which you'll encounter while paddling through the Keys' backcountry wilderness.

Key West exudes the same anything-goes bonhomie it did back in the day of rumrunners and speakeasies — only now it's infused with a shot of modern flair. Colorful conch cottages line the streets of Old Town, swank cocktail salons mingle with celebrated watering holes on Duval, and feral fowl give new meaning to free-range as they strut along the sidewalks crowing with carefree abandon. It also has an eclectic mix of top-rated hotels to suit every traveler.

Find respite from the downtown bacchanalia at the Parrot Key Hotel and Villas . The entire property breathes Old Key West charm. Walkways edged with white-picket fences wind through tropical gardens past hidden swimming pools and quaint, two-story clapboard bungalows. Bright-blue Adirondack chairs sit on covered porches, hammocks swing beneath shady palms, and ceiling fans spin lazily overhead at The Grove, the resort's new open-air restaurant. Parrot Key's complimentary shuttle delivers guests throughout the day to either a private beach club at Smathers Beach or to the heart of Old Town. For a DIY adventure, a fleet of single-speed beach cruisers invites exploration.

At four miles long and two miles wide, Key West is made for biking. Pedal through dappled sunlight along Whitehead Street to the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum . Inside, passionate docents supply a glimpse into the profound yet tragic genius of one of the Lost Generation's most colorful characters. Pay further tribute to Papa at the Hemingway Rum Company , which produces the award-winning Papa's Pilar, named for the author's beloved fishing boat. The company's flagship headquarters, housed in a former tobacco warehouse, is part distillery, part tasting room, and part museum. Find a spot at the bar and sample delicious, dark and blonde Solera-blended rums amidst all variety of Hemingway-themed ephemera.

When the sun starts to set, climb aboard Danger Charters ' elegant, three-masted schooner for a wine-tasting sail that offers a polished alternative to the nightly circus — think fire juggling acrobats and hoop-jumping cats — at Mallory Square. Or take a quick jaunt on the private ferry to Sunset Key for a gastronomical adventure overlooking the Gulf of Mexico at Latitudes , the signature restaurant at Sunset Key Cottages . There, you'll dine on yellowtail, grouper, or cobia by the light of tiki torches with your toes in the sand. Innovative cocktails, crisp white tablecloths, and dreamy island views round out a memorable evening.

Key travel tips you need to know — whether you’re a first-time or frequent traveler

Clint Henderson

The holiday travel season is fully upon us. The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen a record number of passengers this Christmas, and the TSA already broke a daily record. They screened a whopping 2.9 million travelers on Nov. 26, 2023, alone ... the most passengers ever screened in a single day.

As millions of travelers take trips by plane , cruise ship or road , we've gathered some essential travel tips on how best to book and enjoy your journeys.

Whether you're an occasional road-tripper or a frequent globe-trotter, these TPG-backed top travel tips can help you avoid unnecessary headaches when you spend time away from home.

How to find travel deals

the travel key

Flexibility is key when it comes to finding cheap airfare any time of year.

Changing your arrival or departure date by a single day can save you hundreds of dollars on airfare. If you don't mind altering your family's plans slightly, consider booking travel directly on major holidays like the Fourth of July, Thanksgiving and Christmas for cheaper prices and thinner airport crowds.

One of our favorite tools at TPG for finding deals is Google Flights . You can use the search field to find the cheapest (or best) flights. Google will also give you a historical view of how prices have ranged and will even send you email alerts if fares jump or drop on specific routes you've selected.

It also has some fun tools you can use to find a cheap destination. By clicking the "Explore" button on the sidebar and putting your departure airport, Google will give you a map or list view of the most wallet-friendly destinations.

the travel key

However, Google isn't the only place to find deals: TPG publishes regular deal alerts. You can sign up for Twitter alerts and subscribe to our daily newsletter for the latest deals news.

Don't sleep on mileage awards, either. If you've been hoarding miles during the pandemic, it's time to spend them. Cash prices are high, so it can be a good time to burn those miles.

No matter how much you think you know about redeeming miles for flights , there are always new tips and tricks for turning those earnings into dream trips. Turn to TPG for guidance on sweet spots for redemptions. Sites like ExpertFlyer (part of Red Ventures, like TPG) supply additional redemption ideas or even business class upgrade inventory.

You may even want to consult a travel agent to get access to special deals that aren't available anywhere else. Travel agents can sometimes get you extra perks at hotels or even cheaper business-class airfare to your dream destination.

Be your own best advocate

Since there are still air traffic controller shortages and little room for error in the system these days, travelers have to be their own best advocates.

There are ways to get ahead of any possible travel nightmares.

First, be smart when booking. Try to find a nonstop flight rather than one with connections, even if it costs a little more. You'll eliminate the risk of missing connections and lessen the chance of having your luggage go in a different direction than you during a transfer.

You could also take one of the first flights of the day, as those are least likely to face afternoon thunderstorms and most likely to depart on time. Read our article 5 reasons to book the first flight of the day for all the data.

Related: Your flight is canceled or delayed – here's what you should do next

Download your airline's mobile app to keep track of potential flight delays in real time. The airline app is a secret weapon in case things go wrong. Not only will you know when boarding starts, but you'll also learn of any delays first. Some airlines allow you to even rebook yourself in the app.

If your flight is canceled, you'll want to beat everyone else on your flight who is also looking to get rebooked.

We recommend heading for the customer service desk (or lounge desk if you have access). You could also get on the phone with the airline or contact them via social media if there's a delay . Sometimes, an airline's Twitter representative will help you faster than a phone or in-person agent can. You have to use every tool at your disposal when things go south.

Many airlines also now have live chat capabilities to help navigate delays and cancellations.

I always have an alternate plan (or two) in the back of my mind in case a flight gets canceled or delayed. I also look to see what other airlines are flying the route I'm booked in case something goes awry. This way, I'll know what to ask for if I need to be rebooked.

Also, save all the receipts for the expenses you incur during delays or cancellations. You'll want excellent documentation in the case of meltdowns like the one Southwest passengers experienced during the holidays .

If you're stuck at an airport for an extended period, seek out your airport's secret quiet spaces for a brief escape from the travel chaos.

Get Global Entry and/or TSA PreCheck

the travel key

One of our favorite ways to speed through the airport and avoid those summertime mega lines is via Trusted Traveler programs like TSA PreCheck and Global Entry .

Essentially, the government pre-screens you for security and thus you save a bit of time during your travels. You'll need to apply ahead of time and pay a fee. The great news, however, is that many credit cards will give you a statement credit for these fees. TSA PreCheck is a $78 application fee for five years, and Global Entry is $100.

Related: 7 ways to get Global Entry, TSA PreCheck and/or Clear for free

TSA PreCheck allows you to speed through airport security without removing your shoes, laptops or liquids. With Global Entry , you can breeze through customs when you return from an international trip.

If you have the time, going for Global Entry rather than simply TSA PreCheck makes sense. Global Entry requires an interview with Customs and Border Patrol ahead of time, but once you're approved, TSA PreCheck will be included.

Get Clear for the ultimate security trifecta

the travel key

The other security tool we recommend you have in your travel toolbelt is Clear .

Related: Why you should get TSA PreCheck and Clear

The expedited security program allows you to bypass long security lines by using a separate lane at many airports. You'll approach a kiosk where your identity is confirmed via an iris scan or fingerprint. A Clear employee will then escort you to the front of the security screening line.

A Clear membership combined with TSA PreCheck will enable you to go to even shorter lines at some airports with designated Clear/PreCheck lines. Clear isn't perfect at all airports where it's so popular, and there are now long lines (cough, Atlanta). However, it will still generally lead to shorter lines overall.

Make copies of your important documents

Make digital and hard copies of all your important travel-related documents. Start by photographing your driver's license, your state ID and/or your passport.

You should have copies of your IDs in your phone's library in case you get separated from the actual document. Sometimes, it also helps in a pinch if you are asked for ID, and you didn't bring the hard copy. For example, I was recently asked for my ID to enter One Vanderbilt to have dinner at the new American Express Centurion Lounge in New York. The receptionist would have accepted a photograph of the ID if I didn't have the physical document.

TPG also recommends having an actual photocopy in a separate place. Editor Kristy Tolley says she stores a hard copy in a separate place from where she keeps her passport in case she loses a bag. "I also leave a copy of it at home if I'm traveling alone," she said.

Check expiration dates

the travel key

If you aren't 100% certain of the expiration date of your passport and other travel documents, go check them now. Renewing passports takes time, and some countries require six months of future passport validity to allow entry. Remember that child passports expire every five years, which can sneak up on you.

Related: How and when to renew your passport

Double-checking the expiration dates for your driver's licenses and state IDs is also a good idea. Remember that TSA checks the expiration dates on your documents when they screen you for security. Don't forget to check the expiration dates for your Trusted Traveler programs like Global Entry, Clear and TSA PreCheck, too. It can take a while to get a Global Entry interview appointment if you need one to renew.

Few things are worse than getting to the front of the security line and realizing the PreCheck mark is gone from your boarding pass.

Finally, check the entry requirements if you are traveling internationally. Some countries require visas that you must acquire before arrival.

Consider travel protection

When booking your travel, try to use a credit card that offers some built-in travel protection . Many credit cards, including TPG favorites like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or The Platinum Card® from American Express , offer this when you use those cards to purchase your airfare and similar.

Related: Best credit cards for trip delays and cancellations

If the coverage offered by your credit card isn't enough, you might also want to purchase travel insurance . These policies can sometimes go beyond trip cancellations to cover things like medical evacuations. Warning: Read the fine print on any extra policies very carefully to ensure it covers the situations that matter the most to you.

Those who frequently travel abroad may want to consider purchasing an annual travel insurance policy instead of buying one on a trip-by-trip basis. Some TPG staffers purchase annual policies because of the cost savings for multiple trips. Some will find having an annual policy is easier than juggling separate policies or various credit card coverage terms and conditions.

Tips for your luggage

the travel key

TPG has a ton of tips when it comes to luggage.

First and foremost, try to be on "team carry-on" whenever possible. If you don't check baggage, you are much less likely to become separated from it. Many of us at TPG refuse to check luggage except under extreme circumstances.

Of course, other folks with families or those embarking on long journeys may still want to check bags. If that's the case for you, you can still do many things to lessen the chance you get separated from your stuff. For example, make sure your luggage is in good working order, your contact info is attached, the bag is within the weight limits, you get to the airport early (but not too early) to check it and confirm your luggage is tagged to the right destination or connection.

Related: 7 tips to keep the airline from losing your luggage

After last year's baggage delays and luggage disasters , we strongly suggest you put Apple AirTags (or the Android equivalent ) into your luggage so you can track your items if they go missing .

If you check a bag, keep extra medicine or medical supplies in your carry-on bag in case your luggage goes missing or gets delayed. "As a diabetic, I keep a tiny emergency kit in my backpack with enough supplies to keep me going in an emergency," TPG writer Tanner Saunders said.

Former TPG credit card writer Ryan Smith also offered words of advice regarding luggage. "The last items you pack in your carry-on will be most accessible, so use this for your passport, ID, ticket, headphones or whatever else you need during the trip," he said. By making sure those items you'll use most are easiest to reach, you'll save yourself the hassle of having to dig around (or partially unpack) your bag to grab what you need.

Finally, be sure and get compensated if your bags are late or lost. Many airlines will give you points or even cash for delayed bags, and the government has rules on compensation if your bags are lost.

Staying safe on your journeys

the travel key

From potentially getting robbed while on the road to experiencing bad weather or natural disasters while traveling, there are many scenarios that could arise when you're away from home.

To mitigate those risks, pay attention to U.S. Department of State warnings about a destination you plan to visit and check local sources for the latest news from that country or region for additional context. Although the State Department tends to err on the side of caution with its warnings, it's still best to be aware of what you may face during your trip.

Also, know the local number in case of emergencies. In many places, including Mexico and much of Europe, if you dial 9-1-1 on your cellphone, you will be connected to emergency services just like in the U.S. However, you should know the local emergency numbers of whichever country you visit.

Let people at home know your itinerary and stay in touch with them throughout your trip. If something goes amiss, at least someone will know where you're supposed to be or the last place you visited.

If you're arriving at night, contact your hotel or home-share host to ask about the best way to get there at the time you're arriving and the safest ways to travel at night in that area.

Also, be strategic about how you check into a hotel. Some solo travelers request two keycards to imply someone else is on the trip. Giving thought to the hotel room's security swing bar can also make sense, with some taking steps like placing a hand towel over it to make it harder to dislodge from the outside.

Some final tips

the travel key

  • For cruisers, TPG principal cruise writer Gene Sloan suggests arriving in port at least a day in advance (if not several days ahead of time). This will eliminate the risk of missing your ship's departure time and help you get acclimated to the local time zone.
  • When taking road trips to out-of-the-way destinations, go old school and bring paper maps with you or download offline maps from Google. Using a paper map or an offline version means you always have a way to navigate around your chosen destination, even if you lose cellular service.
  • One other note, you should reserve airport parking ahead of time during peak travel times. Some airport parking areas fill up fast around holidays, so reserving your spot ahead of time will save you from wasting time looking for a space when you need to catch a flight. You can also sometimes save by booking online in advance, too.

Bottom line

the travel key

Whether you're fresh to the world of traveling or a seasoned expert, you can always learn new tips to maximize your time away from home. The more research and preparation you do before your trip, the better your experience will be — especially if things go wrong, as they sometimes do.

Some of our favorite tools are deal alerts, Google Flights , sign-up bonuses and credit card rewards . Learn those tools and use them for better travel every time.

Remember that these days when things go wrong, you have to be your own best advocate. For more travel tips and tricks, read the stories below.

How the One Key loyalty program works

How to earn rewards on vrbo, hotels.com and expedia, can you transfer onekeycash, redeeming onekeycash, earning elite status through one key, how to earn one key elite status, one key elite status, is it worth using the one key program, drawbacks of one key, recap of the one key program.

Whether you’re thinking of renting a beach home or planning a multifaceted trip requiring a flight, hotel stay and car rental, you now have an opportunity to earn rewards, receive discounts and reach elite status through a new loyalty program.

Expedia Group brands including online travel agencies Hotels.com , Expedia and vacation rental site Vrbo are joining forces for a program called One Key.

One Key has replaced the existing travel rewards programs used by Hotels.com and Expedia. The inclusion of Vrbo makes it the first loyalty program among major vacation rental sites as well.

Note that there are some limitations around booking through an online travel agency, and previous Hotels.com Rewards loyalists may find earning a free night is more difficult under the new program.

However, for some travelers, One Key will provide an avenue to earn rewards for almost every element of their trip, from flights to hotels to vacation rentals to experiences.

Here are some things to know about the One Key program.

The One Key program combines the booking possibilities from three sites into a lot of earning potential. It’s probably most beneficial for the more infrequent travelers who may not stay or fly enough with one brand to earn perks but could use rewards on all of their travel spending combined.

In other words, it doesn’t matter which of the three sites you’re using. Loyalty currency you earn and elite status progress you make will all count toward a single program.

Like with most loyalty programs, One Key is free to join.

The One Key program will use a new loyalty currency: OneKeyCash. Members will be able to earn through:

Eligible stays on Hotels.com.

Eligible rentals on Vrbo.

Eligible flights, hotels, rental cars or activities on Expedia.

Members will receive 2% in OneKeyCash for every dollar spent on eligible hotels, vacation rentals, activities, packages, car rentals and cruises and 0.2% in OneKeyCash for every dollar spent on eligible flights. That means if you spent $100 for a hotel night, you’d earn $2 worth of OneKeyCash.

You can double dip and earn more rewards by using a travel credit card to pay for your booking and adding your frequent flyer account number to any flight reservations.

The earnings rates get higher for certain hotel reservations as members earn elite status in the One Key program.

In a nice benefit for families, whichever member makes the booking earns the rewards for their whole traveling party. So, a parent reserving flights and a hotel for the whole family would earn all of the OneKeyCash for the trip.

You won’t be able to transfer OneKeyCash to another member’s account. However, you will be able to book travel for another member. So, if you have OneKeyCash in your account and no plans to use it, you can book a trip for a family member or friend with your rewards.

OneKeyCash is equal to $1. For most bookings where you pay upfront, you’ll be able to apply the OneKeyCash you’ve earned toward the cost. For example, if you had $20 worth of OneKeyCash, you could apply it to your next hotel booking on Hotels.com for a $20 discount off the total price.

the travel key

There is one key exception: For flights booked with OneKeyCash, you’ll need to have enough in your account to cover the entire booking.

OneKeyCash can be used on booking participating rentals in U.S. dollars.

The earnings, discounts and perks improve as you earn status in the One Key program. And because the loyalty program encompasses flights, hotels, rental cars and more, it is possible to earn elite status in just one trip.

Trip elements

Many major loyalty programs are built around revenue-based models for elite status, but One Key uses what it calls “trip elements.”

A trip element includes any of the following:

One air ticket.

One room night.

One vacation rental night.

One night on a cruise.

One day’s car rental.

One round-trip ground transportation ticket — like a taxi, shuttle, etc.

One activity ticket.

Trip elements must be worth $25 or more (not including taxes or fees) to count.

Members reach elite status levels by accumulating trip elements. Here’s what it takes to qualify for each tier:

You can see how it’s possible to quickly reach status levels. Let’s say a member books the following as part of a trip:

A flight for a family of four (on Expedia) = 4 trip elements.

A seven-day car rental (on Expedia) = 7 trip elements.

A seven-night rental property stay (on Vrbo) = 7 trip elements.

Two activities during the week (on Expedia) = 2 trip elements.

This fairly ordinary vacation booking totals 20 trip elements, enough for the One Key member to reach Gold status and be two-thirds of the way to Platinum.

For any of these trip elements to count and to earn status and loyalty currency, the member will need to book while logged-in to their One Key account.

Clearly, earning elite status in the One Key program is easy. But what does it get you?

Members who join the One Key program (known as Blue members from the outset) enjoy some limited benefits like discounts on some hotel stays and free price tracking. The latter is a great tool for finding the best deal.

Like with any tiered loyalty program, as you work your way up the ladder, you’ll retain the lower-tier benefits but accumulate new perks along the way.

Here are the perks for One Key’s elite status tiers:

Some of the most notable benefits of elite status are the perks at VIP Access properties, which are a collection of hotels that "consistently receive the highest guest reviews on Expedia Group and meet stringent standards of quality." For flights, the price drop protection is a great way to ensure you're getting the lowest price. If your fare drops in price, you'll get the difference refunded to your account in the form of OneKeyCash.

Though booking through an online travel agency or using the One Key loyalty program may not make sense for most avid travelers, it can certainly be helpful for others.

Here are a few of the benefits to consider.

Search a full range of options when booking

One of the compelling reasons to use an online travel agency like Expedia or Hotels.com is that it searches a wide range of brands. This can be helpful in finding the cheapest prices and, in some cases, alternative options like a small, family-run, boutique hotel off the beaten path.

Bundling your bookings

Another benefit of using a site like Expedia to book your trip is that it can help you keep all the details of your trip organized in one location, including the hotel stay, flight reservation and car rental. Sometimes, bundling can help you tap in to discounts, too.

Earn rewards for Vrbo stays

Even the most avid points, miles and travel enthusiasts will want to take advantage of Vrbo’s participation in the One Key program. Previously, there was no true way to earn rewards for stays at a Vrbo property (such as a beach house).

By logging-in to your One Key account when booking your Vrbo reservation, you'll be able to earn OneKeyCash, which you could use for a future flight, hotel stay, rental car, activity or rental property.

Great for infrequent travelers hoping to earn perks

Though online travel agencies often don’t make sense for frequent travelers who are pursuing elite status and points or miles with airline and hotel loyalty programs, the One Key program can be a great way for less frequent (or less loyal) travelers to get some return on their investment.

Don’t have any hope of reaching elite status with the likes of Hilton or Marriott but planning a trip or two for the family with a car rental, Vrbo stay and maybe even a flight?

A weeklong Vrbo stay with an accompanying car rental and flight is enough to earn you Gold status. This alone could help you potentially enjoy a room upgrade and perhaps a food and beverage credit at your next hotel stay, when available (provided it’s at one of the program’s VIP Access hotels).

Earn for one thing, use for another

Likely the most notable benefit of the One Key program is that you can earn loyalty currency for one booking activity and use the rewards on another.

Booking a rental car will help you earn OneKeyCash and make progress toward elite status you can redeem or enjoy during a hotel stay. Booking a flight could help offset the cost of a future Vrbo stay. And so on.

The interconnectivity of the program across Expedia, Hotels.com and Vrbo’s platforms makes it possible to earn and redeem in a variety of ways.

Though there are some enticing reasons to use the One Key program, there are some clear drawbacks — when it comes to the program itself and to online travel agencies more broadly .

Earning free nights harder than with Hotels.com Rewards

For travelers who have used the Hotels.com Rewards program through the years, the earning and redeeming setup of the One Key program may well come as a disappointment.

With Hotels.com’s previous program, you earned a free night by collecting “stamps” — one stamp for each night stayed, and 10 stamps got you a free night. The free night was worth the average of the rate of the 10 nights you stayed. So, if you stayed five nights at a rate of $50 and five nights at a rate of $100 (a total of $750 in spending), your free night would be worth $75 — a 10% return on your investment.

Under One Key, you get 2% OneKeyCash for every dollar spent at hotels and Vrbo properties — a significantly lower rate of return.

Harder to earn and use other hotel loyalty program benefits

Oftentimes when you use an online travel agency, you’re not able to earn points or enjoy elite status perks with a separate hotel loyalty program.

So, if you’re a frequent traveler who has reached (or is pursuing) elite status with a major hotel chain, note that you may not earn any points or elite qualifying credit for the stay with the hotel’s loyalty program. For this reason, avid travelers may be better off booking direct.

It is worth noting, though, that when it comes to booking flights, you will earn both airline miles and OneKeyCash.

Reservation changes can be more complicated

Booking through a third party (as opposed to directly with a hotel or airline) can complicate reservation changes .

For instance, airline customer service representatives frequently have more limited ability to change a ticket booked through an online travel agency. While all of these booking sites do offer their own customer service representatives and, indeed, enhanced customer support for the higher-level elite status members, having a "go-between" can often be a headache.

Elite status perks limited to certain reservations

Another noticeable weakness of the One Key loyalty program is that some of the elite status perks are confined to certain types of reservations.

Sure, you can earn and redeem OneKeyCash (and earn elite status) for a hotel stay, a flight, a rental car reservation, a cruise or an activity.

However, to fully enjoy the program’s complement of elite status benefits like property credits and upgrades, you’ll need to book a hotel through Hotels.com and Expedia — and not just any hotel; it’ll need to be one of the VIP Access properties.

The new program is unlikely to be a groundbreaking option for the most experienced travelers. And Hotels.com Rewards loyalists may find the path to a free night a bit trickier.

But it does make it possible to earn rewards on one site and redeem on another — particularly for those who frequently rent vacation homes with Vrbo. And it figures to give even more infrequent travelers a path to elite status.

Regardless of whether you’re booking with Expedia, Hotels.com or Vrbo, be sure to use a travel credit card that offers bonus earnings categories for general travel purchases, which will allow you to rack up credit card rewards on top of your earnings in the One Key program.

Full travel vs. low travel keyboards: What’s the difference?

Ashley Biancuzzo

I hate to state the obvious, but it needs to be said. Keyboards are important . In fact, I’d argue they’re the most important peripheral of them all, as they allow us to communicate with our computers. Whether you’re working or gaming, chances are you spend a great deal of time typing on a keyboard. But if you’ve ever read a keyboard review and found yourself by confused by terms like low travel, travel distance, mushy keys, bottoming out, and so on… don’t worry, you’re not alone. If you’re looking to upgrade your keyboard or to better understand the jargon, I’ve got you covered. Read on to learn more.

First, let’s start with the basics. Many non-mechanical keyboards have rubber domes underneath their keycaps. These types of keyboards are known as membrane keyboards and they’re pretty common. The rubber domes are inexpensive to manufacture, sure, but they don’t offer much tactile feedback (aka feeling the bump). If you’ve ever used a bad keyboard, you probably know what it feels like. The board may feel cramped and the keys mushy and unpleasant. In other words, there are no satisfying clicking sounds or bounce back from the keys.

What does travel even mean?

You have to push a key down in order for the computer to register the keystroke, right? Well, the distance the key needs to travel in order to fully depress and send a command to the computer’s brain is the travel distance. This distance is measured in millimeters. When it comes to optimal travel distance, it really boils down to personal preference. For example, the standard distance of a full travel keyboard is around 4mm. Longer key travel is better for most people in terms of accuracy and comfort. Laptop keyboards don’t have much travel, as there’s not much real estate to work with.

Membrane keyboards vs. mechanical

A great wireless keyboard with membrane keys and short, but pleasant travel, logitech mx keys mini.

Logitech MX Keys Mini

The main difference between membrane keyboards and mechanical keyboards is the overall feel of the keypress. Membrane keyboards feel soft because of the rubber domes underneath the keycaps, so they don’t offer much tactile feedback. Mechanical keyboards, on the other hand, have keys that spring back after you press down on them. Instead of rubber domes, there are switches under the keycaps, which allow you to type more accurately.

If you play games often or just like pounding the hell out of your keys, a mechanical keyboard might be a better option, as they offer great feedback and are less prone to accidental clicks. That said, they’re expensive and make a ton of noise due to the click-clacking of the keys. Membrane keyboards are quiet, inexpensive, and more resistant against grime or liquid. Both types of keyboards can have either full or low travel distance.

Low travel keyboard

Low travel keyboards have a key distance of around 1.0 to 2.5mm. That means it takes less pressure or effort to press the key down. If you’ve ever seen or used a scissor-switch keyboard, you’ll notice that, on many of them, the keys sit almost flush with the base. When it comes to shorter or low travel keyboards, sometimes it’s difficult to know when a key is being pressed down or not. That said, they’re usually smaller and more portable as well as pretty quiet to type on.

Razer BlackWidow V3 Pro

Full travel keyboard

The keys on a full travel keyboard will drop down to 3.0mm or higher before bottoming out (aka when a key reaches its full depth). If you like to hammer on the the keys, then you should consider a full travel keyboard. Not only does longer travel help prevent accidental keystrokes, but it also cushions your fingers from hard presses. Most mechanical keyboards have a full travel distance. They’re also incredibly modifiable and durable.

In 2024, The MICHELIN Guide is announcing the first ever MICHELIN Keys — a brand new distinction that recognizes the most outstanding hotels across the world. Head here for everything you need to know about the new Key distinction, and visit this page to explore the full list of Key hotels in the United States.

The Three Key distinction is the highest hotel honor in The MICHELIN Guide. Earning One Key (80 properties) or Two Keys (33 properties) is difficult enough, but only 11 hotels earned Three Keys in the United States. Of those, four can be found in New York City. The Three Key hotels excel in all five criteria used to judge hotels by our Inspectors. But in this series , we thought it fitting to focus on just one of those criteria — the most photogenic of the five — architecture and interior design. Guide to TSA Luggage Locks

Close up of Platinum Elite Hardside TSA lock

When you travel, your luggage should be securely protected with TSA-approved luggage locks. TSA-approved locks all fit a universal master key only accessible by TSA agents that is used to inspect luggage on an as-needed basis. As only TSA agents have access to the master key, your luggage remains securely locked when handled by anyone else.

Luggage locks that are TSA-approved protect your luggage as well as its contents. TSA agents will break locks not approved by the TSA off bags to inspect luggage contents, leaving the bag’s contents vulnerable to theft and possibly damaging your bags.

We recommend  using TSA luggage locks on your suitcase . At the same time, we understand some confusion exists concerning what type of TSA locks to use, how to set combinations on TSA-approved locks, and how to reset a luggage lock if you forget your combination. We’ll answer your concerns here.

Where Can I Buy TSA-Approved Locks?

You can buy TSA-approved luggage locks at airport kiosks, local luggage stores, and online outlets. A TSA-approved lock’s packaging will clearly state the lock is approved by the TSA. Avoid luggage locks that do not make this claim.

If you want to know if your lock was opened by a TSA master key, purchase a lock with a red/green indicator. The indicator is set to green and only switches to red if the bag was opened for inspection. You can reset the indicator for future trips using a paperclip, pen, or other slender-pointed object.

Which Types of Luggage Locks are TSA approved?

You can choose several types of TSA-approved locks to fit your personal needs. Possibilities include:

  • Key Locks are traditional padlocks that use a physical key to open and close the lock. One of the most common types of TSA-approved travel locks, key locks are affordable ways to keep your suitcase contents safe. One word of caution: The key for a travel key lock is small and easy to lose. Keep your key in a secure place, or you could find yourself locked out of your luggage, in which case you’ll need a small hacksaw to cut through the lock.
  • Combination Locks are a good choice for anyone who doesn't want to keep track of small travel lock keys. These locks use a three or four-digit combination. The lock has a keyhole for the TSA master key, and as long as you don't forget your combination, you won't be locked out of your suitcase.
  • Cable Locks are combination locks that use a semi-flexible cable to lock instead of the traditional metal clip. The cable's flexibility is a plus, as the lock can be used for various applications, including locking strongboxes. Some cable locks come with retractable cables that store in the lock.
  • Key Card Locks use a key card similar to those used to open hotel rooms. Like combination locks, TSA-approved key card locks have a keyhole for the TSA master key. The key card is credit card size, and fits easily into a purse or wallet.

Can I Lock My Luggage on a Flight?

Travelers sometimes express concern about whether they are allowed to lock their luggage on flights. The answer is yes, you can and should secure your bags on all flights. The rules for domestic and international flights, however, are slightly different.

Can I Lock My Luggage on a Domestic Flight?

You can lock your luggage on a domestic flight. Whether or not you choose to do so depends on what you’re transporting. A lock provides extra security and peace of mind if you’re checking in a suitcase with expensive clothing or valuable items inside. A lock may not be needed if you’re traveling with a carry-on bag filled with inexpensive items.

Should I Lock My Luggage for International Flights?

Luggage locks are necessary when traveling internationally to secure your belongings and minimize theft risk. Some areas of the world have problems with luggage theft in and around airports. A securely locked suitcase is less likely to be stolen than one that can be quickly opened, riffled through for valuables, and discarded.

You can use TSA-approved luggage locks internationally, but not all international airport security have access to the TSA master key. In countries where the key is unavailable, security agents may break TSA locks to inspect bags, which could damage your bag and leave you in need of  luggage repair . Fortunately, many popular international destinations now use the TSA master key, at least at major airports. Check the following chart to see if your destination uses the TSA master key:

How Can I Reset My Luggage Lock?

Resetting a combination luggage lock is easy if you’re entering a new combination for the first time or changing a known combination. The process is more complicated if you have forgotten the combination. Here’s how to handle each of those situations.

How to Create a New Password With A New TSA Lock

Traveling using a TSA-approved lock’s factory setting is risky — it’s like using ‘password’ as an online password, so you should enter a new combination before traveling. You may also want to change your combination to keep someone who knows your password out of your bag.

Changing an Integrated TSA Lock Password

Changing the password for suitcases with integrated TSA locks requires a slightly different approach:

  • Set the lock dial to 0000 or your current password.
  • Slide the release button towards the dials to confirm the lock will release.
  • Insert a pointy object, such as a glass repair screwdriver, into the reset button. You do not need to hold the button down.
  • Set the deal to the new password.
  • Poised the release button towards the dials to confirm the new code. The reset button will click and release if you set the code correctly.
  • Test the new password by turning the dials to a number other than the new code, then push the release button. The dials should not release.
  • Insert the bag's zipper tabs into their slots while the preferred number is displayed. The tabs should release.

Once you get the lock open, remember the combination or add it to your phone. A common traveler's trick is to add a fake name and phone number to their phone’s contact list, using the combination for the last number of the phone number.

TSA-approved luggage locks provide the most protection when paired with high-quality, well-made luggage. Check out  luggage sets from Travelpro to find the bags and suitcases airline professionals use.

Possible bird strike diverts American Airlines flight, plane lands safely in Baltimore

the travel key

An American Airlines flight heading from Washington, D.C. to Key West, Florida diverted to Baltimore after a possible bird strike.

The plane departed from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport slightly before 1 p.m. and was scheduled to head to Key West International Airport, according to an American Airlines statement. Instead, the plane landed at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport around 2 p.m.

"The aircraft landed without incident and taxied to the gate under its own power, where it will be inspected by our maintenance team," the statement read. "We’re working to get customers on their way to EYW as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience."

The aircraft, an Embraer 175, held 69 customers and four crew members. No injuries were reported.

A new flight to take the passengers to Key West was scheduled to take off around 4:45 PM and land around 7:26 PM, according to American Airlines website.

Pilots union warns spike in safety, maintenance issues

The flight delay comes after the American Airlines’ pilots union warned last month that it’s been tracking a "significant spike" in safety and maintenance issues at the airline unrelated to birds.

In a memo to its members that USA TODAY reviewed, the Allied Pilots Association’s Safety Committee said it observed a trend of tools left in wheel wells after maintenance work was performed, an increase in aircraft collisions on the ground during towing operations as well as poor recordkeeping and abbreviated check flights following maintenance.

"While  United Airlines  is currently under public and government scrutiny, it could just as easily be American Airlines," the memo said. The union added that airline employees are seemingly under pressure to return aircraft to service in order to protect flight schedules.

Union representatives have addressed these concerns with the airline's management team, APA President Ed Sicher said in a separate letter to the union’s members.

"We secured management’s commitment to involve the union earlier in the safety risk assessment (SRA) process, and we are likewise seeking a commitment that APA will have a seat at the table for the entire quality assurance process," Sicher’s letter said.

Biden seeks to boost climate-friendly flying

The system of tax credits is designed to boost production of materials for sustainable aviation fuels.

the travel key

The Biden administration Tuesday sought to spur the growth of sustainable jet fuel, seen as crucial to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, with a system of tax credits for producers.

Aviation fuels made out of crops will help “decarbonize” the commercial airline industry, administration officials said as it unveiled the incentives, which were authorized in the Inflation Reduction Act.

“Today’s announcement is an important steppingstone as it acknowledges the important role farmers can play in lowering greenhouse gas emissions and begins to reward them through that contribution in the production of new fuels,” Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in a statement. “This is a great beginning as we develop new markets for sustainable aviation fuel that use home grown agricultural crops produced using climate smart agricultural practices.”

Under the program, producers will be eligible for a tax credits for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that achieves at least a 50 percent reduction of greenhouse gas emissions when compared with petroleum-based jet fuel. SAF that achieves a greenhouse gas emissions reduction of 50 percent is eligible for a $1.25 credit per gallon amount, and SAF that achieves an emission reduction of more than 50 percent is eligible for an additional 1 cent per gallon for each percentage point the reduction exceeds 50 percent — for a maximum per gallon credit of $1.75.

In a briefing with reporters, John Podesta, senior adviser to the president for international climate policy, said the U.S. commercial airline industry consumes about 10 percent of all transportation energy and produces about 2 percent of American’s carbon pollution. While seen as “hard to decarbonize,” Podesta said the administration views it as a “must decarbonize sector.”

“SAF is a key to achieving net zero aviation,” Podesta said.

As part of the updated guidance, the SAF Interagency Working Group also announced an update to a model that provides additional methodology for SAF producers to determine the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions rate of the production of jet-fuel crops.

Some environmental groups and scientists have raised concerns about the administration’s plan because farmland being used to grow food could be displaced by crops used for jet-fuel production. That could lead to deforestation around the world as land is cleared for food production to backfill for what is displaced in the United States.

Dan Lashof, director of the World Resources Institute in the United States, said the administration made some improvements to the rules but that they still don’t fully account for the loss of cropland.

“The fundamental issue for us is that we don’t think it makes sense to turn food into jet fuel and we’re not happy about creating a pathway to make it possible,” Lashof said. “This is really about how we should be using the limited amount of prime agricultural land in a world where we need to feed a population approaching 10 billion people.”

The guidance incorporates an Agriculture Department pilot program to encourage the use of climate-smart agriculture practices. Those who use a “bundle” of certain practices, including cover crops and enhanced efficiency fertilizer, would be eligible for a greenhouse gas reduction credit.

Soybeans and vegetable oil are examples of materials used to create the jet fuels that would produce no more than half the emissions of the petroleum-based product.
