Theme and variations: why you should book a themed cruise

From foodie trips to sporty tours and music festivals at sea, whatever your passion, you’re bound to find a themed voyage that suits you

One of the best weeks I’ve ever spent at sea was last summer’s ‘Comedy Stars’ cruise with Princess : seven days of exploring lovely Scandinavian ports and enjoying all the amenities of Enchanted Princess – plus non-stop laughter. Whatever your interests, there’s probably a themed cruise to match. Comedy is my personal favourite but you might prefer sport, music or the chance to learn a new skill, such as cordon bleu cookery. If so, you’re in luck, because all of the above feature in themed cruises this year. And I’m pleased to say that Princess is back with an even brighter Comedy Stars line-up in July: Paul Merton, Ed Byrne and Julian Clary. LOL! Sporty cruises These are mostly regular itineraries but with the inclusion of tickets to big sporting events taking place in the ship’s ports of call. For example, NCL ’s Norwegian Epic has been chartered by Infinity Sports Travel for a Mediterranean cruise that includes tickets to the rugby world cup, taking place in France . Eight packages of differing lengths are available, departing between September 8 and October 16, with tickets to see England , Scotland , Wales and other teams. Formula 1 is another popular cruise tie-in, and Azamara has a five-night ‘Grand Prix Weekend’ cruise from Barcelona with tickets for the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2024, while Silversea has a nine-night cruise from Civitavecchia that includes tickets for the same race.

Azamara also partners with PerryGolf, which offers admission to prestigious golf courses – three to six during a typical cruise – and arranges the necessary transport, caddies, lunch and drinks in the clubhouse. Onboard social functions ensure that non-golfing spouses – who only pay for the cruise, not the golf – don’t miss out. Alternatively, Golf Travel Cruise has partnerships with several lines including Costa, the official cruise line of the 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy , and is offering a golf-themed Mediterranean trip this September. For a high-end option, Hapag-Lloyd offers English-speaking golf-themed summer cruises visiting Livorno and Antibes, plus an American cruise this October with opportunities to play at Rhode Island, Portland, Boston and Baltimore. If tennis is more your game, P&O Cruises has an Australian Open cruise in January 2024, round trip from Sydney to Melbourne and including two match days at Melbourne Park. Finally, grapple fans should look out for 'Chris Jericho’s Rock ’n’ Wrestling Rager' aboard Norwegian Pearl in January 2024. Get on board Norwegian Cruise Line's three-night 'Rugby World Cup Cruise' aboard Norwegian Epic, round trip from Marseille including tickets and transfers for Wales v Portugal and England versus Japan, departs September 15, 2023, from £1,885. Azamara's 12-night '2024 British Isles Golf Cruise' aboard Azamara Quest, from Edinburgh to Dublin via Invergordon, Kirkwall, Glasgow, Belfast and Douglas (Isle of Man), departs July 14, 2024, from £6,820 including the final two days of the British Open and three rounds of golf (£4,028 cruise only).

Star cruises Cruising with the stars is not so far-fetched as it might sound, thanks to a new breed of brand ambassadors. In her capacity as wellness advisor to Celebrity Cruises , Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow launched an offshoot of her Goop lifestyle brand with a live interview and Q&A aboard Celebrity Beyond last year.

Musician and broadcaster Jools Holland has worked with Saga Cruises since 2019 – both of the line’s new ocean ships feature The Club by Jools restaurant – and the man himself will be appearing on stage aboard Spirit of Adventure later this year, in August and September.

P&O Cruises has a whole stable of stars who join selected voyages every year, from celebrity chefs to Take That singer Gary Barlow, who appeared in charity concerts aboard Arvia and Iona this spring.

P&O’s regular 'Sail With The Stars' series also includes its 'Global Explorers' cruise in September, when broadcaster Ben Fogle will appear with BBC Great Escape ’s Monty Halls.

Cunard has a long track record of hosting stars on board, and it will be repeating its successful partnership with Cheltenham Literature Festival this November.

The 'Literature Festival at Sea' aboard Queen Mary 2 will feature best-selling novelist Kate Mosse, novelist and screenwriter Lynda La Plante – creator of Prime Suspect – as well as former Home Secretary Alan Johnson, military historian Antony Beevor and celebrity gardener Alan Titchmarsh.

New Tilbury-based Ambassador Cruise Line is also getting in on the act, offering ‘In Conversation With’ cruises featuring celebrities including comedian Tim Vine this June. Get on board Cunard seven-night 'Literature Festival at Sea' aboard Queen Mary 2, from Southampton to New York, departing November 19, 2023, from £1,099.

P&O five-night 'Global Explorers' cruise aboard Ventura , round trip from Southampton via Le Havre and Rotterdam, departing September 19, 2023, from £499. Cookery and wine cruises These are just about the most popular themed cruises going, and luckily there are itineraries to suit all budgets.

Princess Cruises offers one of the best value voyages – a round trip from Southampton (so no expensive flights to pay for) with onboard culinary demonstrations from some of the UK’s best-loved chefs: Ready Steady Cook ’s Ainsley Harriott, Si King of Hairy Bikers fame, and Michelin-starred French chef Jean-Christophe Novelli. At the other end of the price scale, Regent Seven Seas Cruises has several ‘Epicurean Spotlight Voyages’, including a 10-night Mediterranean cruise with Alain Roux, chef-patron of Berkshire’s Waterside Inn, which has retained three Michelin stars every year since 1985 – an achievement unique outside France.

For oenophiles, Regent has two wine-themed cruises among its Spotlight Voyages. In November, Stephanie and Michael Honig of Napa Valley’s Honig Vineyard will be joining Seven Seas Splendor in the Adriatic, and in October, US Master Sommelier Doug Frost will be aboard the same ship in the Western Mediterranean.

P&O was a pioneer of foodie cruising and has a posse of ‘Food Heroes’ including chef Marco Pierre White, wine expert Olly Smith and UK-based Spanish chef Jose Pizarro.

All will host masterclasses aboard P&O Cruises ships this year.

Among the river lines offering culinary cruises is Scenic, with two French itineraries: 'Tastes of Southern France' this June, August and October and 'Flavours of Bordeaux' in July and September.

Both include food and wine appreciation classes.

Further afield, Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth embarks on a 'Great Australian Culinary Voyage' in January 2024, round-trip from Melbourne, during which local celebrity chef Karen Martini will highlight Australian produce and cuisine. Get on board Princess Cruises seven-night 'Culinary Stars' cruise aboard Sky Princess , round trip from Southampton via Guernsey, La Rochelle, Bilbao and La Coruña, departing September 16, 2023, from £699. Regent Seven Seas Cruises 10-night 'Epicurean Spotlight' cruise with chefs Alain Roux and Michael Nizzero aboard Seven Seas Mariner , from Rome to Venice via Salerno, Messina, Santorini, Ephesus, Gythion, Corfu and Dubrovnik, departing August 14, 2023, from £5,712. Music cruises Floating music festivals have been a huge trend in recent years, with companies such as Sixthman, On The Blue, Flower Power Cruise and Star Vista chartering ships from the major lines, often in the Caribbean.

Always popular, 'The 80s Cruise' will feature more than 20 acts including Soft Cell and Debbie Gibson when Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas sails from Florida’s Port Canaveral to Aruba and Curaçao in March 2024. Similar sailings include the 'Super Legends Cruise' this September, featuring Rose Royce of Car Wash fame during a three-day trip from California aboard Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas .

Ambassador Cruise Line , based at London’s Tilbury Docks but offering a range of UK regional departures, has four music-themed cruises for 2023, including its 'Land of the Vikings with Motown Meets Rock ’n’ Roll Legends' cruise, starring Kiki Dee plus Elvis Presley impersonator Ben Portsmouth.

On Europe’s rivers, Saga is offering several music-themed cruises aboard Rex Rheni, including two 'Jazz and Wine on the Rhine and Moselle' trips, in June and August, with Hungary’s BRB jazz band playing for six of the seven nights.

In July, August and September, the same ship hosts 'Sounds of the 60s' cruises on the Rhine, plus a ‘Sounds of the 70s’ cruise in July, with six nights of entertainment.

Later in the year, Classic FM host John Suchet will be guest speaker on Spirit of the Danube for a 'Classical Music on the Danube' cruise in November, with live music on board and a private concert at one of Vienna’s palaces.

Top booking tips

Book early Themed cruises tend to sell out quickly, so if one takes your fancy, don’t delay. That’s the advice from Ambassador Cruise Line’s chief commercial officer, Phil Gardner, who points out that early booking gives you the widest choice of cabins. "It also means you can make the best of any launch offers or add-ons, such as upgrades and onboard credit," he explains.

Do your homework Special event cruises – to sports events or music festivals - are usually organised by specialist companies who charter the whole ship, so you have to book with them, rather than the cruise line. For many, the joy of cruising is the opportunity it presents to visit a range of destinations in a single holiday while enjoying all the attractions of a modern cruise ship. However, did you know that you can dovetail your cruise holiday with the opportunity to indulge in your favourite pastime?

What is a themed cruise?

A themed cruise is a voyage, or series of voyages, whereby an element of the onboard experience is tailored towards a specific hobby or passion. While many theme cruises will still adhere to the standard cruise format, the daily programme will be enhanced with the addition of activities centred around a theme. This might have a bearing on the itinerary, the evening entertainment or the choice of shore excursions available.

In more extreme cases, some cruise lines may dedicate one itinerary in its entirety to the theme. These are known as full-ship theme cruises and are generally sold via a specialist agency.

What type of themed cruises are available?

You will find themed cruises available for all different types of interests and pastimes. From a traditional perspective, the most popular are Bridge theme cruises. These organised games and tournaments allow you to try your hand against fellow Bridge enthusiasts and after often moderated by a member of the ACBL (American Contract Bridge League). Bridge theme cruises are offered by a variety of cruise lines, with some even giving you the chance to top up your ACBL Master Points as you cruise from port to port.

Themed cruises with food and drink at the heart of the experience are also frequent. If you are a wine aficionado, then you will have no trouble finding a themed itinerary that fits your requirements – after all, what could be better than cruising around the Mediterranean whilst enjoying private tasting sessions in some of the region’s most noted vineyards?

Dancing and musically-themed cruises are also in vogue, particularly since P&O Cruises introduced the now-famous ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ collection. Combining performances inspired by the show, one-on-one tutoring and even the option to have dinner with a professional dancer, these voyages are extremely popular so booking in advance is highly advised.

Which cruise lines offer themed cruises?

Nearly every cruise line offers a themed cruise of some description, whether it is a sole sailing set aside for a specific interest, or a schedule of voyages running throughout the year. Amongst the most prolific is Crystal Cruises who have a yearly programme of sailings dedicated to music, food and wine, golf, the natural world and film.

Some cruise lines will offer a run of voyages designed to elaborate an element of their own onboard experience. For example, Oceania Cruises is regarded as having “the finest cuisine at sea” and therefore run a comprehensive programme of themed enrichment classes centred around the culinary arts.

Other lines noted for theme cruises are Silversea, who are highly regarded for their comprehensive Bridge programme, while others like Regent Seven Seas , Azamara Cruises and Cunard all offer voyages featuring themes, covering everything from Genealogy to holistic wellbeing.

River cruise lines such as AmaWaterways often have a schedule of itineraries dedicated to famous wine regions, particularly on Douro cruises, while Norwegian coastal operator Hurtigruten run a very successful Astronomy theme cruise which nicely compliments its popular Northern Lights itineraries.

What is "Theme Cruise"?

Theme cruises take lots of forms, but they primarily are regular voyages with additional onboard programming. This special type of programming can range from seminars to learning and classroom-style sessions, from concerts to dance themes. Countless possibilities are waiting for you to explore- food and wine, religious, music and dancing, cruises for singles, an alternative lifestyle themed, etc. Usually, the programming occurs onboard the cruise ship, but sometimes theme events take place in the port as well. And what is a specially themed vacation without women, anyway? The God's most charmingly beautiful creatures make the money-world go round! And they drive the cruise travel industry as well. So what a better theme in life - and on your special cruise vacation, than the woman by your side?

Theme Cruise Lines

The purest form of a theme cruise is what the company/brand creates onboard one of its vessels - all the passengers are entitled to be participants then. This was fairly common when shipboard transportation involved long sea stretches for ocean crossings.

Nowadays, with 2000+ passengers onboard most liners, it is not practical for the entire vessel to be turned into a "themed voyage". Still, most large companies schedule annual festivities themed on sports (including car racing, golfing tournaments), music styles, lifestyles, hobbies, etc.

Most affordable and the least crowded are theme voyages on riverboats. Among the best brands in the USA (with large fleets and bigger boats) are ACL-American Cruise Lines and AQV-American Queen Voyages . In Europe, you can search the schedules of brands like Viking , Uniworld , AmaWaterways , Avalon , Scenic , Emerald .

Types of Themed Cruises

The theme cruise vacation travel today is a very popular way to connect people with common hobbies and interests to share the experiences of theme-related onboard activities that are impossible to live through onshore. Theme specials can range from political- to poker- or music-themed. The popularity of these vacations nowadays has spread across the entire demographic spectrum and everyone is able to find out his own line or itinerary.

Special Interests / Private Themed Voyages

These trips are the most common of all themed specials. In these, a special group of interest arranges and purchases a number of staterooms that are in different categories. This special group also sets up the itinerary and makes arrangements for special guests; markets the voyage to travelers who would be interested in the activity. These groups have little impact on other passengers on board, though some public spaces might be taken over by them.

Private theme cruise specials are developed usually by an organization. They are administered by a travel agency - if you want to participate in the events, you should book through this agency. General passengers on board will be prohibited from participating in the events. Some private theme voyages might comprise as many as twenty guests, while others- as many as one thousand. Keep in mind that a great number of private sailings include additional fees, such as fuel surcharges, gratuities, port fees, government taxes, as part of the overall fares. This is important to note while comparing theme sailings prices to the retail prices out in the marketplace.

Theme Charter Voyages

This signifies full ship charter deals: This type of cruise includes the entire ship's organization around interest-du-jour. Every one of the passengers is a participant to some extent. You can enjoy onboard events and additional activities on selected classic cruises that are going to be shaped around particular themes. If you want to learn about local history; or you are a music fan; or just want to improve your photography skills, themes add different dimensions to general offers. Book through any travel agency or through the line's website - it doesn't really matter (except for the rates, of course). A negative side is that everyone on the ship is welcome to participate which makes the voyage less intimate. Such themed voyages are more speaker-, seminar- or musically oriented.

Companies get more and more innovative - even a tattoo-themed "Ink or Swim" was on offer in April 2015 (roundtrip Fort Lauderdale to Cozumel, Mexico) on Liberty of the Seas . Passengers had the opportunity to get tattoos from renown artists, to attend tattoo contests and join a private beach party in Cozumel. Rates started at $970 pp, including all activities and events, with added $100 pp onboard credit towards tattoos for first and second passengers in each cabin.

Theme Cruises for Adults, Families with Kids, Seniors (FAQs, tips)

Each theme voyage has different dynamics. Groups vary between 10 and 2-3 thousand (on voyage charters). Partial charters book a substantial number of staterooms, full charters book the entire vessel. Nearly everything on board goes around the voyage's theme, and the experience is about connecting these like-minded passengers socially in big-group activities.

Cruises for FAMILIES with KIDS

Family cruises are actually "kids-themed" voyages on ships with plenty of modern and "cool" kids-friendly facilities, dedicated (professionally trained) staff for supervising children's activities, onboard nursery (for toddlers up to 3 yo), kids- and teen-only club lounges, sundecks (with pool or whirlpool), teens-only programs and excursions, teen spa treatments. family-type cabins, family pool deck, kids menus in dining rooms, etc.

Family cruises are the industry's fastest-growing branch of specially themed ship travel vacations. Annually, over 2 million children cruise worldwide. More and more families book shipping vacations due to their most affordable prices and excellent value as a vacation experience.

• Ticket price includes accommodations, transportation, dining, entertainment, most activities (including kids clubs and programming), water parks with slides, sports facilities, cinemas.
• Often, major companies offer "kids sail free" deals or give discount rates for a third/fourth passenger in the cabin.
• Specifically for families with children are available connecting cabins, bigger than average family-category staterooms (oceanview, balcony) and larger "family suites".
• Ships provide a safe and controlled kids-friendly environment. Some provide 2-way beepers or walkie-talkies. Families eat together in the main dining rooms. Alternatively, kids can eat at their lounges. Food is complimentary and all you can eat.
• Themed onboard activities are organized n adult-free facilities for Toddlers (ages 2-4), Juniors (ages 5-7), Intermediate (ages 8-10), Tweens (ages 10-12) and Teens (ages 13-17). Kids in different groups eat at different times and order from special menus.
• Few ships have trained staff and nursery to look after toddlers or to provide babysitting for families.
• Caribbean and Mediterranean itineraries are best for family-themed voyages. Mediterranean roundtrips from UK (Southampton) are among the most popular and generally offered by P&O UK.
• Best brands for family ship travel are Royal Caribbean (largest liners, innovative facilities), Carnival ("Fun Ship" activities, great food, cheapest fares), MSC ("kids sail for free" deals year-round) and Disney (themed entertainment, great facilities, most expensive). Aggressively competing on the family cruising market, some companies establish exclusive partnerships with brands like LEGO (MSC), Dr Seuss (Carnival), DreamWorks (Royal Caribbean), Marvel's superheroes (Disney), Nickelodeon (NCL).
• The answer to "what are the best ships for families" depends on the vacation budget. It's one of those money questions for choosing between all-inclusive luxury on exotic destinations and affordable packages on shorter itineraries.
• Bigger and new ships provide more space and activities in comparison even to land-based resorts. Among the most unique facilities are outdoor theaters, zip-lines, multi-deck waterslides, surf simulators, fly simulators, rock-climbing walls, ice-skating rinks, trampolines, circus schools, bumping cars, racing tracks, bowling alleys, mini-golf, arcades.
• What are the benefits of family cruising? Family ship vacations are convenient (no cooking, cleaning, rentals, changing hotels-restaurants, 24-hour room service, casino gaming and duty-free shopping, numerous close to home departures / saving airfare), all-inclusive (accommodation, meals, alternative menus, entertainment, activities, pools-Jacuzzis, theaters, libraries), care-free (supervised programs, age-based activities shipboard and ashore), adventurous and cheaper than most beach resorts.

KIDS-FREE cruises for ADULTS (tips)

Although most vessels have dedicated to children onboard facilities (clubs, playrooms, pools, supervised activities) kids usually run free, hang out in stairwells, ride the elevators and generally annoy elder passengers. Many companies offer entirely "kids-free" cruises or voyages with a smaller number of children - mainly by picking itineraries and ships less attractive for families.

• Luxury ships are smaller and geared to adults, but also expensive. Some premium brands provide kids programs and babysitting.
• Avoid peak-season travel.
• Book balcony suite to reduce time in public spaces.
• Brands like NCL Norwegian, Cunard and MSC have top-deck located luxury cabin complexes to maximize privacy. This "ship-within-ship" concept features suite and villa residents with exclusive access to a private sundeck with swimming pool, restaurant, nightclub, fitness and lounge facilities, butler service.
• Spa suites are another "fewer kids" option also offering as perks premium brand spa products, unlimited access to VIP spa facilities, healthy-food restaurants, even cabins and suites with whirlpool baths, complimentary treatments, fitness classes, thalassotherapy pool.
• Small-ship cruises fit into smaller, less-known ports and deliver crowd-free days ashore. Hurtigruten ships are shore-hugging and visit 34 ports on coastal routes over six or seven days. They give an opportunity to start exploring non-touristy call ports.
• Small-ship cruises on smaller boats, as well as river cruises, are also not so kids-friendly due to lack of "modern fun" facilities, less traditional and longer itineraries, smaller cabins, not cheap fares.
• World Cruises and Grand Voyages (longer than 2-weeks itineraries) attract repeat (older) travelers and fewer families. Repositioning voyages (RepositionCruises.com) are seasonal, always one-way and often change regions, which results in the cheapest fares and kids-free experience. Less traveled routes and exotic destinations (Indian Ocean, Africa, Far East, Arctic and Antarctica, South America) attract fewer families.

Adults-only cruise ships

There are passenger ships advertised in the companies' brochures as "adults-only" and not allowing any kids at all.

• Most river travel brands have minimum age requirement 12-13 yo and discourage 8- yo kids. Deals are inclusive of drinks (beer-wine-soda at dinners); tours, Wi-Fi, bicycles (ashore), some include also airport transfers, alcoholic beverages, gratuities, in-cabin minibar.
• Saga targets exclusively passengers over 50 yo, with deals inclusive of all meals (any restaurant dining), gratuities, Wi-Fi, drinks (wine with lunches and dinners), bus transfers.
• Viking Ocean has a minimum age requirement 18 yo. Deals are inclusive of 1 excursion in each call port, shipwide dining, Wi-Fi, self-serve laundry; drinks (wine-beers-soda during lunches and dinners, all-balcony cabins.

Senior Cruises

It's not too late for a first cruise after 55. Reaching a certain age doesn't mean you won't be able to enjoy a cruise vacation. More and more ships cater to senior travelers. The children-free peaceful atmosphere and calm travelers of similar interests and ages might be the right choice for you. There are few senior cruises each year. Many lines advertise these types of voyages but don't specialize in providing an all-senior model, and generally, seniors find themselves onboard among a younger crowd. Most senior passengers prefer senior river- and smal-ship cruises as compared to huge 2000+ passenger liners. The reason is that these offer a more intimate and quieter atmosphere.

Most senior cruises feature onboard lecturers to peak the interest. A loud party atmosphere is not common. Seniors prefer to relax and learn while traveling. Many lines advertise senior cruises on older ships which means fewer passengers and environment free of partying all night. Voyages for seniors are cost-effective because lines charge less. A growing trend with these types of cruises is senior adults taking along adult children - family reunion style for senior cruises. Children who are middle-aged are less likely to act like kids and prefer relaxing while they travel with senior adult parents.

• Keep an eye out for discounts between January and March.  Melody says, “It will depend on when and where you want to go, but if you can be flexible, you can often find some great deals and promotions during the shoulder seasons of your chosen destination. ‘Wave season’ is typically from January to March and lots of cruise lines offer discounts to attract travellers then too.”
• Arrive  early to avoid disappointment.  Melody advises, “My top tip is to ar rive a day early. If you're flying to the cruise departure city, there could be travel delays, and you don’t want to watch your ship sail away without you.”
• Do your research  before you arrive.  Laura suggests, “Learn about the places you're visiting before you go. There may be a landmark or activity that needs to be booked in advance, and you don't want to get to a port and be disappointed if you are unable to do something you were looking forward to.”
• Pack accordingly.  Packing for a themed cruise can be a unique experience. Melody explains, “In addition to the usual cruise essentials, you'll want to bring items that align with the cruise's specific theme. Whether it’s a Star Trek uniform or a yoga mat and workout attire, find out what you’ll need to bring along ahead of time.”
• Take out cruise cover.  No matter where you’re heading on your cruise, it’s important that you’re fully covered with the right travel insurance. Adding  cruise cover  to your existing policy means you’ll be protected for things like onboard medical emergencies, missed departures, and port changes.

Crew member goes missing at sea during around the world cruise ahead of return to UK

A crew member has been reported missing at sea on an around the world cruise.

The crew members went missing from the Ambassador Cruise Line’s Ambassador ship.

The massive 1,400 guest cruise ship was making its way back from Lisbon , Portugal , to the UK, when one crew member was reported missing, according to Sky News.

Ambience had turned back to ‘retrace her route to the ship’s position when the crew member was last seen,’ the outlet said citing a statement from the British cruise line.

But the ship has since been ‘released by coastguard authorities from the search’ and it is making its ‘original course back to the UK,’ the company said.

The missing crew member is reportedly from India and they are thought to have gone missing ‘shortly after breakfast’ on Friday when the cruise was off Cape Finisterre on the Spanish coast, the statement said.

A thorough ship-wide searchers were carried out for the missing person, who has not been named, Sky News said.

The local coastguard was also informed.

Ambassador told the outlet in a statement: ‘Our immediate priority is to provide full support to all crew members closely affected by this incident.

‘Guests onboard have been kept informed throughout the day and have been advised of recent developments.

‘Ambassador remains committed to the safety and wellbeing of all our crew and guests. We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of our colleague at this difficult time.’

The cruise ship set off for the 120-day voyage on January 6 from Tilbury, Essex.

It was scheduled to arrive in the UK at 9am on Sunday, but it will be delayed until the evening, the UK-based company said.
