23 Epic Adventures in Norway to Get Your Heart Racing!

Norway is an incredible destination for anyone looking for a true adventure, with exciting and breathtaking adventures all over the place. The incredible fjords, mountains and remote wilderness makes Norway a truly epic place to visit if you’re after an outdoor adventure, and there’s something for everyone here!

We’re going to be looking closer at 23 different epic adventures in Norway in this article, giving you plenty of options for exciting things to try when you’re visiting Norway.

So get ready to get your heart racing, and hopefully find some inspiration for your next Norway adventure!

Table of Contents

1) Rock climbing

Norway is filled to the brim with amazing mountains covering most of the country. No matter where you are in Norway, there are mountains nearby, and with mountains comes the possibility for some epic adventures.

The first adventure on the list is rock climbing. We’re not just talking about hiking, but real rock climbing with climbing gear. There’s few things as amazing as reaching the top of a mountain when rock climbing , and most people who are somewhat fit can try.

Most regions in Norway have places where you can go on guided rock climbing expeditions, but the most popular rock climbing mountain is Norway’s national mountain Stetinden . It’s only reachable by climbing, and the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking!

Stetinden

If you’re not familiar with rock climbing, consider doing a Via Ferrata . These are almost just like regular rock climbs, but safety railings make the whole experience that much safer. You will always be connected to a safety point, so it’s virtually risk-free, giving you the feeling of rock climbing without you needing the experience to safely do so.

The great thing about Via Ferrata is that anyone can do it, and there are beginner route’s that someone with zero rock climbing experience can do with a guide.

2) Multi-day hikes in remote wilderness

One of Norway’s most well-known pros is the vast wilderness and the freedom to roam principle that allows you to freely use the nature, no matter who owns it.

This allows for hikers and adventurers to go on long multi-day hikes where you can put up your tent anywhere! Feel free to follow one of many multi-day hiking trails, or just get off the path and follow your desire.

There are many different areas in Norway that allows for uninterrupted multi-day hikes, and some of the most popular destinations for this kind of hiking are:

  • Hardangervidda mountain plateau.
  • Jotunheimen National Park .
  • Kongsveien over Filefjell .
  • Femundsmarka National Park.
  • .. or just at a random place in the forest or in the mountains.

Tenting in Jotunheimen

I suggest reading up on Norway’s wild camping laws and regulations . It’s not all that much to take into consideration, and the main mantra is to stay 150 meters away from buildings, only stay at a single location 2 nights in a row, and don’t leave any waste in nature when you leave .

Adhere to these rules and be nice to other hikers you might meet, and you’re going to have a great time on your hiking adventure on Norway’s wilderness!

3) Snow mobile adventures

There are few things as thrilling as going on a snow mobile adventure in the Norwegian wilderness in the middle of winter, driving at high speed in the snow.

Snow mobile adventures are best done either on Svalbard or in northern Norway. Tromsø and Alta are popular snowmobile destinations.

There are actually pretty strict regulations that govern where you can and cannot drive a snowmobile , so many municipalities (and even entire regions) do not offer this type of adventure at all.

Snowmobiles

That said, there are many areas you can go on a snowmobile trip, and I recommend doing it with a guided group or a private tour guide to make sure you don’t do it outside of the legal areas.

4) Whitewater rafting

If you really want to get your heart racing, then whitewater rafting might just be what you need. You will find many different rapids in Norway that are suited for whitewater rafting, and it’s quite the thrilling experience .

Whitewater rafting is such a thrilling experience for both couples, families and group of friends, and Norway’s many different rivers allow you to tailor the experience to a level you are comfortable with.

A few hours in a river on a whitewater raft is sure to get your heart racing, and it’s a pretty good workout as well. Navigating the rapids is not as easy as it looks, and it’s absolutely going to push your limits and give you that adrenaline boost.

5) Running a marathon

If you’re a runner, then Norway has several special marathons that will take your breath away . Some of these marathons are considered among the most difficult in the world due to Norway’s terrain, so don’t aim to get a personal best, but rather join for the unique experience.

Some of Norway’s amazing marathons include The Midnight Sun Marathon, a marathon in the middle of the night in Tromsø where runners will see the sun despite it being 2AM . This marathon attractions thousands of runners from all corners of the world, and the entire city is awake to cheer on the runners in the middle of the night!

Or how about Fjellmaraton, a mountain marathon in Valdres where you are running up and down steep hills for most of the 42K? This is going to push the limits of most runners, even those who are comfortable with a regular marathon.

If you just want to push yourself to try a regular marathon when visiting Norway, Oslo Maraton is Norway’s biggest and oldest marathon . This run takes you around some of the best places in Oslo, and it’s quite a scenic marathon. It takes place in late September each year.

Midnight sun at Hovden beach in Lofoten

6) Dog sledding

Dog sledding is an incredible adventure when done in the middle of winter. The rush of the air flowing trough your hair as the dogs run at high speed over the snow is truly something special , and the remote wilderness they can bring you into makes for the most incredible photos.

There are many places where you can go dog sledding in Norway, and places like Tromsø offers dog sledding right outside of the main city center.

One of the incredible things about dog sledding is just how fast the dogs are running. Trust me, it’s going to be much faster than you expect!

And why not combine dog sledding with a hunt for the northern lights? Imagine seeing the amazing aurora borealis from the sled in the middle of nowhere!

Dog sledding

7) Musk oxen safari

The Dovre mountain range is known for its herd of musk oxen that includes roughly 250 animals. These large herbivores tend to stay fairly close to the main hiking trail in the area, and a guided musk oxen safari comes with a guarantee to see the animals .

Even though these huge animals feed on leafs and grass, they can be very aggressive towards humans who get too close, so it’s best to bring a binocular to view them from at least 200 meters away. There are a few cases of tourists who have gotten attacked, but it’s very rare if you do take precautions.

Going on an adventure to see the wild musk oxen in Dovre is definitely worthwhile, and will showcase some amazing Norwegian nature at the same time . You will need to be able to go hiking for multiple hours to be guaranteed to see them, but it’s absolutely worth the time and money it takes to get there.

Learn more about musk oxen safari in Dovre here .

8) Downhill skiing

Norway’s mountains are perfect for downhill skiing, and this is one of the most popular winter activities for Norwegians. There are ski resorts all over the country, even in the far south of Norway, so you can go downhill skiing no matter where you are, as long as you arrive in the winter.

There are slopes for all ages and experience levels, from complete beginners to experienced ski goers.

Some of the most popular downhill ski destinations are places like:

  • The Lyngen Alps.

Skiing at Høgevarde in Flå in Hallingdal.

Most people opt for downhill skiing at ski resorts like on the photo above, but there are also plenty of places to go on off-piste downhill ski in Norway. This obviously requires a lot of skiing experience, but Norway’s a paradise for such adventures if you’re after that!

Skier

9) BASE jumping

Norway has multiple incredible BASE jumping locations , and many people consider Norway to be a true BASE jumper’s paradise. A BASE Jump is almost like a skydive, but you jump off the end of cliffs and other structures instead of jumping from an airplane.

BASE jumping is much more dangerous, but also much more thrilling than regular skydives, and it’s really something for those who seek to push their limit.

BASE jumping at Kjerag mountains. Photo by Xof711 / CC BY-SA 3.0.

The Kjerag mountains just outside of Lysebotn are the most popular places to go for BASE jumpers, and the main jump there offers 12 seconds of free falling before the jumpers need to deploy their parachute.

BASE jumping requires you to be very knowledgeable with skydiving before you can even do a BASE jump with a guide, and all Norwegian BASE jump instructors require you to have at least 250 skydives before you can even join a beginner’s course.

Kjerag is popular among hikers, as well as people base jumping.

10) Seeing a wild polar bear

Polar bears are among one of rather few animals that will actively hunt humans for food if they are presented with the opportunity, and seeing a wild polar bear with your own eyes is certainly an epic Norwegian adventure !

We do not have polar bears on mainland Norway , but there is a population of polar bears living on the Norwegian island called Svalbard .

This means that you’ve got to catch a plane to Svalbard’s airport Longyear to even be able to find a polar bear in the first place. Svalbard is an incredible island with lots of adventure opportunities, so it might be worth checking out for the adventurous of you.

It’s not all that rare to see wild polar bears on Svalbard, and you will often see them in your binoculars if you go on a boat trip along the coast or other excursions like that. It’s not legal to go on a polar bear safari in itself, so you need to be a bit lucky to be able to see one.

Polar bear

The fact that there’s wild polar bears on Svalbard even makes it illegal to travel outside of the main city Longyearbyen without being armed with polar bear protection . This usually means that you will need to bring a guide that is armed with a rifle along on your travels outside the city!

Polar bear sign on Svalbard.

11) Ocean or fjord kayaking

The breathtaking Norwegian fjords are best experienced from the water itself, either by ship or a smaller vessel such as a kayak. There’s something really special about being on a kayak in one of the fjords, and you really get the feel for how steep and high the mountains on each side really are!

The great thing about Norway is that there are great opportunities to rent kayaks pretty much anywhere, since most cities are located either close to the ocean or near a fjord. So there’s no stopping you from experiencing Norway’s ocean the best way possible.

Kayaking in Nærøyfjord close to Gudvangen.

12) Bungee jumping

A bungee jump is sure to get your heart racing like there’s no tomorrow, and there are several incredible bungee jumps in Norway.

The most famous bungee jump in Norway is at Rjukan where you can bungee jump down from the bridge leading up to the famous Vemork industrial site. This was a very important part of the Norwegian Resistance during World War II, so you’re bungee jumping in truly historic settings.

Other bungee jump locations include the incredible Lyngenfjorden Bungee Jump , where you jump down into a ravine with a spectacular waterfall just ahead of you. Just take a look at the video below to see what it’s like to jump in Lyngenfjorden.

No matter which locations you choose, a bungee jump is a guaranteed way to fill up your adrenaline!

13) Glacial hikes

There are lots of glaciers in Norway, and these permanently frozen structures are among Norway’s most popualar tourist attractions. Most people opt to hike up to a glacier to get a photo of it and enjoy the view, but it’s also possible to go on a guided glacial hike in Norway !

A glacial hike allows you to actually walk on the glacier itself. It’s not as easy as it sounds, and you should absolutely book a guide that will provide you with the necessary equipment. Without the proper safety equipment, glacial hikes are downright dangerous.

There are many different glaciers in Norway, and most of them offer guided glacier hikes, so you can usually find one somewhere close to where you are visiting.

Nigardsbreen glacier.

If you really want a unique adventure, consider going on a hike up to Galdhøpiggen, Norway’s highest mountain top . The hike itself is truly amazing, but you also have to do a short glacier hike to get to the top (unless you want to hike all the way around it).

This is truly an epic Norway adventure, giving you the best hiking experienced combined with a glacial hike at the same time . To make matters even better, Galdhøpiggen is located in the beautiful Jotunheimen National Park that looks like it’s ripped right out of Instagram’s travel feed!

Styggebreen glacier with Galdhøpiggen in the back

14) Ride a bike all the way up Trollstigen

Trollstigen is one of Norway’s most famous car roads , consisting of hairpin bends up the mountainside. It’s a very cool sight in itself, and most people choose to experience it from car. However, it’s possible to rent a bike, and it’s definitely an interesting challenge to cycle up the entire road.

Riding a bike up Trollstigen is getting increasingly popular, and I believe it to be one of the best ways to actually experience this unique attraction . It’s surely an incredible Norway adventure to bike up the steep mountainside in one of Norway’s most beautiful places.

Trollstigen

15) Go surfing at Jæren

You might not be thinking of surfing as a typical Norwegian activity, but Norway does actually have a few amazing surfing spots . The best of them all are the beaches on Jæren, found on the west coast of Norway, not too far away from Stavanger.

Jæren is known for having incredible waves and plenty of different beaches where surfers can tackle the waves of the ocean. There are places to rent surfing boards as well as instructors, so you should definitely considering surfing at Jæren (or at other places) if you’re looking for a Norway adventure.

Hellestøstranden beach at Jæren.

16) Go on a whale safari

There are lots of whales off the Norwegian coast, and it’s truly a unique Norway adventure to go on a whale safari in a RIB or small boat . There’s few things as majestic as seeing the incredible whales with your own eyes right in front of you!

Most whale safaris take place close to Tromsø, Lofoten and the surrounding areas, which is where you find the most dense whale population in all of Norway.

A humpback whale in Norway

17) Sleep in an ice hotel

There are multiple different ice hotels in Norway where the entire hotel room is made out of ice. This is obviously a unique experience like nothing else, and it’s just something magical about sleeping in a room made completely out of ice !

Most ice hotels are only open during the winter (seeing as they will all melt away in the spring), so they’re made from scratch each winter.

It’s definitely a unique experience to spend the night at an ice hotel in Norway, so consider doing that if you’re after a special type of hotel room for your stay in Norway.

18) Salmon fishing

Norway is home to some of the world’s best salmon rivers , and anglers from all over the world visit Norway to experience the incredible salmon rivers!

The main fishing season is in the autumn, and you have the chance to catch some incredibly large salmon at this time period.

If you’re into fishing, then you should definitely consider going salmon fishing in Norway. It’s a great experience where you get to experience the best of Norway’s nature while also doing what you love.

Salmon fishing in Reisaelva

Just don’t forget to buy a fishing permit and pay the national fishing fee before you start fishing, or else you’re going to get into a big argument with the owner of the river.

19) Go cave exploring

There are many different cave systems in Norway under the huge mountains, and you can definitely have a great cave exploring adventure in Norway if you’re up for the challenge . The different caves are spread all over Norway, and it’s probably a cave near where you will be staying.

Some cave systems are long and complex and requires a guide, while others are fairly short and safe to explore on your own. No matter which one you go for, bring a headlamp and enjoy the experience.

Mikael's cave

20) Try one of Norway’s many zip lines

Zip lines are a sure way to get your heart racing, and the tall Norwegian mountains and steep mountainsides make for some ideal places to set up zip lines. You will find plenty of zip lines along valley, down from mountains and even over fjords and rivers here in Norway!

One of the most famous zip lines in Norway is the Flåm zip line, which is Scandinavia’s long zip line with it’s 1.3 kilometer of lines. You reach a speed of over 100 kmph during the ride, so it’s absolutely thrilling!

21) Hike to get your photo taken at Trolltunga

Trolltunga is one of Norway’s most famous hikes, but it’s not for the unfit! To get your photo taken at the tip of the Troll’s Tongue, be prepared to spend at least 10 hours in total on the hike (both ways).

It’s a challenging hike, but you are rewarded with a truly spectacular view, as well as the opportunity to get your photo taken alone on the tip like seen below.

Trolltunga

Many tourists are unprepared for the long hike when attempting to reach Trolltunga, so please plan ahead and make sure you are comfortable with a long and somewhat challenging hike. There’s no place to buy snacks or drinks along the trail, so pack everything you need for the trip before you leave.

22) Go on a road trip

The best parts of Norway tend to be far away from where most people are, so the best way to experience Norway is by driving a car to get to all these remote places. There’s nothing like the freedom to drive around and explore Norway at your own leisure!

Driving on Arnøya

A road trip open up many opportunities to explore places most tourist aren’t able to get to, and let you pull over to the side of the road to get on hiking trails whenever you see something interesting.

Rental cars are generally pretty pricey in Norway, but I think they’re well worth the cost.

23) Jump onto Kjeragbolten

Kjeragbolten is a boulder wedged between two rock formations , and it makes for a truly spectacular sight! Make sure to bring a friend along for the hike so that you can take turns jumping out on the boulder while the other person immortalizes the moment by taking a photo of it.

It might not look safe at Kjeragbolten seeing as there are no safety bars (and a deadly drop below), but no one has actually died at Kjeragbolten thus far.

But even so, I’m sure your adrenaline is going to be filling up as you’re making the jump down to the boulder with the fjord

You will find Kjeragbolten in the incredible Kjerag mountains, which is a hiker’s paradise in itself. You can get to Kjeragbolten alone by hiking, or with a guide:

Coastal cruise in Norway

Norway in a nutshell®, flåm railway (flåmsbana), fjords in norway, aurlandsfjord, nidaros cathedral/nidarosdomen.

A day-by-day plan to guide your journey.

Day 1: Welcome to Oslo

When you arrive at Oslo‘s Gardermoen Airport, make your way into Oslo ‘s city centre. Many travellers opt to take the express train to Oslo Central Station, but we can arrange a private transfer for you (at additional cost). For those arriving early, we recommend exploring Oslo by foot, spending the afternoon at sights including the Munch Museum, Akershus fortress , Oslo Opera , and the Aker Brygge area.

Spend the night in Oslo.

Day 2: Explore the Highlights of Oslo

This morning, get an early start to explore the Norwegian capital. We recommend booking a guided bus tour that will take you along the famous landmarks of the city. Highlights include the beautiful Vigeland Sculpture Park , the Royal Palace , Akershus fortress, and Oslo City Hall .

Another option is to tour Oslo on your own visiting some of the above attractions, or others like the Fram Polar Ship Museum and Karl Johans street. You will then have the rest of the day to explore at your own leisure.

Spend another night in Oslo.

Day 3: Railway journey To Røros

You will begin your day by heading to Oslo Central Station to board the half-day (5-hour) journey onboard the Røros Railway that runs through the rough and rugged wilderness of Østerdalen. The train line was name after the former mining town of Røros, your final destination of the day.

Røros, which is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site, is a living museum with a rich history as a mining town and a unique atmosphere with picturesque streets and charming wooden houses. We recommend visiting Olav’s mine and to learn about the history at Røros  Museum Smelthytta.

Spend the night in Røros.

Day 4: Railway journey To Trondheim

Spend the first part of the day exploring Roros further. This region is located on the Røros plateau and is an excellent destination if you enjoy outdoor activities. Later in the afternoon you will take a 2.5 hour train ride to Trondheim . The journey concludes with a steep, winding descent into the lowlands where Trondheim is located. Take the rest of the evening to discover the sights of this medieval city, including Bakklandet , an idyllic neighbourhood full of history and culture.

Spend the night in Trondheim.

Day 5: Explore The Capital Of The Vikings

Today you have the entire day to explore this vibrant port city that was once the capital of Norway during the Viking Age, back when it was called Nidaros. Here you will find the remarkable Nidaros Cathedral —with architecture that rivals Paris’s Notre Dame. There are many other attractions to visit like the Ringve Museum and Gardens, the Trøndelag Folk Museum, Munkholmen and the Old town bridge .

Day 6: Exploring The Coastline Of Norway

Today, you will embark on a cruise that will have you discovering the martitime beauty of Norway. You will head to the Trondheim harbour to board a Hurtigruten cruise ship for the Norwegian Coastal Voyage. It will then set sail along the Trondheim Fjord and past Hitra Island.

In the late afternoon, the boat will dock at the city of Kristiansund and the town of Molde . This journey passes through some breathtaking coastal landscapes, and the final port of the day is a brief stop in Ålesund, after midnight.

Spend the night on board Hurtigruten, in a private cabin.

Day 7: Sail to Historic Bergen

During the night, the ship calls at Torvik, Maløy, and Florø as the journey weaves through islets and stunning landscapes before coming within view of its final destination— Bergen . Here you will disembark early in the afternoon to enjoy some leisure time as you wish. Despite being an international city, Bergen, “The Capital of the Fjords”, has all the charms of a small town. Here you’ll find Bryggen , a UNESCO World Heritage site, along with remarkably preserved old houses, a lively fish and flower market, cable cars offering stunning views, great museums and more.

Spend the night in Bergen.

Day 8: The Capital of The Fjords

You will continue to explore beautiful Bergen today. We recommend riding the Fløibanen Funicular  to Mount Fløyen to enjoy panoramic views over the city or to take a cable car up Mt. Ulriken. Bergen is surrounded by 7 mountains so this is an ideal place for hiking. Bergen is also known for its museums that cover the city’s history, architecture, music and art and we recommend visiting the Edvard Grieg museum and the KODE art museum, which is Scandinavia’s largest museum for art and music. If you wish to explore the fjords further, optional fjord cruises are available.

Day 9: Norway In A Nutshell To Flåm

Today will be an especially scenic day with a lot of travel. From Bergen, the early Bergensbanen train transports you to Voss, where you’ll be transported by bus to Gudvangen . There, you will embark on a scenic 2-hour fjord cruise to Flåm , including a trip through Nærøyfjord , the narrowest fjord in all of Europe. This UNESCO World Heritage site is perhaps the most breathtaking part of Sognefjord , Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, with its mighty peaks, tumbling waterfalls, and small farms dotting the mountainsides. Finally, the boat sails up Aurlandsfjord to Flåm, a charming village, where you will spend the evening.

Spend the night in Flåm.

We recommend that you book luggage transfer for the travel between Bergen and Oslo.

Day 10: Explore Scenic Flåm

Spend the day exploring the beauty of Flåm and its surroundings. There are many hiking paths in the area for those who may want to get closer to nature. You also get free admission to the Flåm Railway Documentation Centre, where you can learn about the construction of this railway, which has earned the title of one of the world’s steepest railway lines. An optional activity to the Stegastein viewpoint is recommended. The viewing platform extends about 30 meters from the cliffside and 650m above the fjords below, to offer extraordinary and unbeatable views. For those who want to explore the fjords even further, you can enjoy an optional fjord safari or kayaking tour.

Spend another night in Flåm.

Day 11: The Flåm Railway Experience

Spend the early part of your day exploring the village of Flåm by following one of the many hiking trails in the mountains around the village.  Later in the afternoon, you’ll get to experience the famous Flåm Railway firsthand as it climbs 900 metres over a span of 20 kilometres up the winding track to the Myrdal Station. Here you will switch to the Bergensbanen train that carries you over the mountainous rooftops of Norway. This ride, voted one of the  best railways in the world, will take you through the charming villages of Geilo and Gol before concluding in Oslo, where you will spend your last night in this amazing country.

Day 12: Departure from Oslo

For transportation to Oslo-Gardermoen Airport, you can take the Flytoget express train from Oslo Central Station or book a private transfer through Nordic Visitor that will deliver you to the airport directly from your hotel. If your flight is in the afternoon, take the opportunity to do some last-minute shopping, visit one of Oslo’s museums or just relax at a café after this amazing journey.

With this itinerary, you’ll travel from Oslo to Trondheim by train. The first leg of the journey will see you crossing mountains and forests to reach Røros, where you’ll stay the night. This is a 4.5-hour train ride.

The next day you’ll board the Røros railway to Trondheim. This journey should take around 2.5 hours. You’ll travel through the countryside, passing rivers, woodlands and the largest wilderness area in all of Scandinavia. If you’re lucky, you may spot a bear or a moose from your train window.

On this tour, you will hop aboard a coastal cruise, provided by either Hurtigruten or Havila Voyages, along the Norwegian west coast. You’ll be staying in your own cabin with private facilities.

Hurtigruten and Havila Voyages operate along the same route on different days. Your personal travel consultant will book the cruise on your behalf in light of your tour’s start date and the rest of your itinerary.

If you are travelling on a Hurtigruten cruise: Hurtigruten ships offer a classic Norwegian experience, with cosy cabins furnished with either twin or double beds. Your room will be between 8-11 square metres (86-118 square feet) and will always include a port hole, but please note that a view from the window cannot be guaranteed.

Instead, Hurtigruten ships all offer comfortable viewing decks, dining areas and lounges. This way, you can spend your mornings and evenings relaxing with incredible views of the passing Norwegian coastline.

If you are travelling on a Havila Voyages cruise: Havila Voyages ships are the newer cruise liners on the block. Their modern cabins are furnished with either twin or double beds and are all around 15 square metres (161 feet). Your room will have a port hole and a small sofa so you can watch the views of ocean or coastline go past. Or, head up to the lounge, restaurant or viewing deck to see more of the passing fjords.

This tour includes the famous Norway in a Nutshell® tour from Bergen to Oslo. This is one of Norway’s most iconic journeys. You’ll travel by train, bus and ferry, seeing beautiful landscapes of steep mountains, shimmering fjords, charming villages and scenic coastline.

The connections will be announced and clearly explained in your travel documents. You will receive a ticket with all the information about transfer points and timings with your final travel documents.

You can book an optional luggage transfer for the journey. If you do this, you’ll want a backpack for your daily essentials and one-night stay. Your luggage will be waiting for you at your destination.

If you do not book a luggage transfer, you will have to carry your bags between the train, boat and bus. All connections will be within easy reach and there will be storage available for your luggage during each leg of the journey.

For example, a double bed often consists of 2 single beds pushed together. Twin rooms are 2 separate single beds. Triple rooms include a double bed along with an extra single bed, rollaway or sofa bed. And single rooms are often smaller than the standard double.

If you do require a visa, you will be directed to your local embassy website to learn about the visa requirements.

Your passport must also be valid for at least 3 months from your departure from Norway. It’s good to check your passport expiry date early in case you need to renew it.

Only you can pick the best time to visit Norway for your trip. It’ll depend on how much time you have to explore and what you want to see and do in Norway.

During the summer months, June , July and August , you’ll have the warmest temperatures and longest daylight hours of the year. This is ideal for outdoor excursions and taking full advantage of your days for sightseeing.

If you’d like to experience the top attractions with fewer visitors around then you could book a summer itinerary in May or September . These shoulder season months generally have more tour and attraction availability.

Please note that if you travel in spring, end of March through April , you’ll find that many attractions and museums are operating on reduced winter hours.

The winter months are also popular, but generally quieter. Travel to Norway at this time of year to see snowy mountains, cruise along frosty fjords and chase the magnificent northern lights.

If you head north in December and January , you could experience the polar night. At this time of year, the conditions are also ideal for winter activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling and more.

Read more about the best time to visit Norway on our blog.

From Oslo in the south, Norway stretches hundreds of kilometres into the Arctic Circle. The country is so long that it spans the latitudes of 58°N to 81°N. For that reason, daylight hours vary greatly depending on where you’ll be visiting. That said, summer in Norway brings long days with plenty of daylight.

In the south, around Oslo, Bergen and Stavanger, you’ll experience 15–20 hours of daylight. If you visit the north, including locations such as Tromsø and Kirkenes, you can expect 20–24 hours of daylight.

In fact, within the Arctic Circle, from mid-May to late July, you’ll experience the midnight sun. This is when the sun never fully sets.

Norway’s long summer days give you plenty of time to explore. That said, you may want to pack a sleeping mask if you are a light sleeper or tend to wake up at dawn.

Find out what the daylight hours will be during the month of your visit in this guide to time and daylight in Norway .

During the summer months, you can expect fairly stable weather in Norway. That said, because the country spans such a large distance from north to south, temperatures are likely to vary depending on your location.

For example, the west coast is usually warmer thanks to the Gulf Stream, while the far north is usually cooler.

The months of June, July and August boast the warmest weather of the year. In Oslo, you can expect average temperatures around 16°C (61°F), with potential highs of 20–25°C (68–77°F). In Bergen, it is closer to 13°C (55°F) and in the north, around Tromsø, you can expect temperatures around 10°C (41-50°F)

It’s also good to know that weather conditions are often changeable in Northern Europe, so you should come ready for sun, rain and wind. For more information on the local climate, read the page Norway weather conditions .

Please note that sightseeing is dependent on weather and road conditions. This means that your itinerary might need to be altered if these conditions are not favourable during your visit.

Summertime is the most stable time of year in Norway. That said, you should still be ready to experience all seasons in one day. Especially if you will be spending a lot of time outdoors, you’ll want to pack for a combination of weather conditions.

Bring lighter clothes for the warmer, sunny days, and extra layers for chilly nights in the mountains or for taking in the view from cruise ship decks.

Here is an essential summer packing list for your trip to Norway:

  • Shorts and trousers
  • Short and long sleeve tops
  • At least one warm jumper or fleece
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Light gloves, hat and scarf
  • Comfortable walking or hiking shoes
  • Sunglasses, sun hat and sunscreen
  • Eye mask to sleep despite the long daylight hours
  • Electronic gear such as smartphone, external powerpack, and travel adapters
  • A backpack for easy access to daily essentials
  • and don’t forget your camera!

An umbrella can also come in handy. If you are a wildlife watcher, you may wish to bring binoculars.

For more information, check out this Norway packing list .

In most major Norwegian cities and towns you will be able to find coin-operated launderettes, with self-service facilities, and dry cleaners. Most hotels on your trip will also offer a laundry or dry cleaning service for an additional cost.

When you travel with Nordic Visitor, breakfast at your Norway accommodation is always included.  For the rest of your meals, the amount of spending money you need will depend on the standard of restaurants you decide to go to.

That said, we recommend budgeting between 100–400 NOK for lunch per person, each day. Dinners at casual restaurants might cost between 500–1,000 NOK. Meanwhile, at upscale restaurants, you can expect to pay 1,500 NOK or more. This does not include the cost of alcoholic beverages.

It’s best to book as soon as you can to secure your preferred travel dates. Once you have picked your tour, check the availability calendar to see which months are open for booking. Then, select the date you want and complete your booking.

We recommend waiting for a confirmation from your travel consultant to ensure your travel dates are available. You’ll then be able to purchase your flights with confidence.

If you like to plan well ahead, you’ll find that it’s possible to book many tours for the following year. And if you have any questions or need advice, you can always contact us .

After booking your tour package online, you will be contacted within 2 business days by your own dedicated travel consultant. They will be your point of contact for all your travel needs before, during and even after your trip.

We aim to complete bookings within a few weeks. During this time we take care of booking your accommodation, activities, and transport, confirming all parts of your journey. Once this is done, your travel consultant will provide you with all the details of your trip.

When we get back to you might depend slightly on how far ahead you’ve booked your travels and other tours running at the time.

No need! Nordic Visitor is already working on offsetting the estimated carbon footprint of your package. We’ve partnered with an environmental fund in Iceland to carbon offset all our tours.

Carbon offsetting your international flights is not included, but we highly recommend you look into possibilities with your airline or directly through a local environment fund.

If you have any questions before your trip, you can get in touch with our Norway travel experts. The live chat option is useful for getting a quick reply as someone answers live every day during office opening hours.

Once you’ve booked, we’ll provide you with a travel guide packed full of local tips and top attractions for your visit. You can also check out our online Norway Travel Guide where we’ve compiled useful information about topics, including:

  • Which currency is used in Norway and which credit cards are widely accepted
  • What kind of electric adapters or converters you’ll need
  • Which languages do Norwegian speak (yes, English is one of them!)
  • How to get a refund on tax-free shopping
  • As well as tipping, buying snacks, and other useful information

After you have booked your tour, it will only take a few days to confirm its availability. But it may take a few weeks to create your itinerary and book everything.

Once your trip details are finalised, we’ll send you e-copies of your travel documents. This will include your personalised itinerary, our Norway Travel Guide and your service vouchers. We recommend printing your tickets and vouchers to bring with you to Norway.

When you depart may depend on the time of your return flight. Check out early if you’re heading to the airport for a morning flight. On the other hand, if you’re flying home later in the day, you might like to enjoy a leisurely day or visit one more attraction.

You will usually need to check out from your room around 10–11 AM. If you’re staying in town longer, you will be able to store your luggage at the hotel reception. Simply return later to collect your bags before making your way to the airport.

All bookings are billed in Euro (EUR). Prices displayed in other currencies are indicative only and based on the daily exchange rate. This means conversions from EUR to other currencies will fluctuate from day to day.

Perfect for us

We wanted a tour where we travelled independently from a group and explored at our own pace. The Norway at Leisure tour was perfect for us. Having all of our travel and accommodations arranged for us made it easy to navigate a new country. We also appreciated having our hotels very close to train stations, museums and scenic areas.

Diane, United States

Classic norway at leisure, september 2023, very pleased.

We were very pleased with all the arrangements and information. We were able to follow all the instructions easily.

Paul, Australia

Classic norway at leisure, july 2023, covered what norway is about.

We found the holiday covered a lot of what Norway is about but as we were moving all the time we found it quite tiring.

Peter, United Kingdom

Classic norway at leisure, august 2023, everything went splendidly.

This was our second trip with Nordic Visitor. Absolutely everything, from the first email from our agent, Irja, to the very last driver pick-up, went splendidly. All arrangements went very smoothly. It was a super trip. I would definitely use Nordic Visitor again and will certainly continue to recommend it.

Danielle, Canada

Classic norway at leisure, june 2023, we experienced life in norway.

The different modes of transportation across the country gave us the opportunity to experience life in Norway as a local and to take in the gorgeous scenery up close. We had plenty of free time to do the things we wanted on top of the scheduled excursions. We rented a kayak and SUP and explored the many sights of Trondheim on the water. We went on hikes that ended with extraordinary vistas. We sampled many different types of food from local areas.

Karen, United States

The hotel choices were all excellent, especially the one in Flåm. Each breakfast was plentiful and enough to provide a good start for each day. The location of each hotel was strategically appropriate for the next leg of the trip, but also consistent with walking access to the city centre. The vouchers all worked well and everything ran on time.

  • Typical Norwegian leisure ...

Typical Norwegian leisure activities

Norwegian’s typically are very active people, scattered across Norway you’ll find no shortage of Ski centres, hiking trails and even boating areas for sailing or canoeing, especially in more southern areas.

There are beautiful scenic hiking trails all across Norway, some of the most popular being around Stavanger, Google will tell you many routes if you search a specific area for hiking trails but if you get the chance ask a Norwegian! Many of them take Sunday hikes and will happily share their favourite routes with you. While hiking is beautiful in the summer months, I would avoid it over the harsh winter unless you're a very experienced walker, frozen lakes literally disappear under the layers of snow. If you're feeling brave when the snow sets in winter sports is a great way to throw yourself into the culture here, for those of you that still have energy after a long day skiing or snowboarding many ski resorts also offer 'after-ski' parties, which are exactly what they sound like.

If you fancy a quieter time after your busy day glögg during the winter months is a warm wine drink served over the Christmas period and can be found at most cafes. There are commonly clubs in most areas of Norway for: Handball, football, running, skiing and cycling.

More relaxed activities include knitting and crafts. Some areas hold craft fairs where you can rent a stall and sell you're creations. If you're feeling really Norwegian try knitting a Marius jumper, it's the most tradition, iconic pattern here!

Norway travel agents say that exploring the Arctic Circle is one of the best things to do in Norway and it should not be missed.

How to Find the best Accommodation on Norway Tours

Luxury Norway tour agents say that there are different types of places to stay during a trip to the country. One can choose from staying on an abandoned farm or can opt for a fishing cabin along the Atlantic ocean. Also, there are historic hotels and lighthouses along the sea that are weather-beaten. Apart from that, tent accommodations in UNESCO listed fjords are also available which comes with an experience of kayaking.

There are accommodations available for all types of budgets. There’s something for everyone; whether someone one is tight on budget or looking for luxurious accommodation or want a peaceful place to stay or anything.

The most important aspect to consider here would be choosing a place which adds to the trip. That enables covering as many tourist sites as possible. Choose accommodation in the vicinity of the place where most of the important sites are located.

Keep in mind that it’s not a great idea to bargain (hostels & hotels) in Norway. However, this won’t really mean spending too much on accommodation. It’s just that one has to a little wise and creative and accommodation charges are going to be really minimal.

Wild Camping is the cheapest accommodation in Norway. Particularly those who are visiting the country during summer, Wild Camping is the best option. It’s just that one has to bring a tent along. It also gives a chance to see the Norwegian beauty of nature.

Then, there are campsites that are a particularly great option for those who want to go camping but can’t do without toilets and showers. Here one will have to pay very nominal money that will be cheaper than hotels.

Things to  Avoid on Norway Tours!

Knowing some important cultural differences, one can easily understand about things that must be avoided on Norway tours. People of Norway are generally reserved and shy. They don’t really appreciate interacting with strangers. Here are the things one needs to avoid during the trip:

A 10% tip is enough at any restaurant or eating outlet! However, services charges are generally included with the bill and tipping is not really required. Even if you are considering that don't go beyond 15% or you'll be considered showing off.

There is a price tag for every item and bargaining over those items will not do. It's not really going to give a positive result.

When on Norway tours avoid any kind of personal touching. Norwegians do not really appreciate unless it's a close friend or an acquaintance.

Norway, in general, is a non-judgmental country and people don't judge anything about marriage. There are many couples living together and having a family together without marriage. So, don't form opinions about the marital state unless you are told. There are even couples of the same sex living together and they are not actually “only friends”.

Drinking and driving are not accepted in Norway! Unlike many other countries, Norway has very strict rules in that regard.

Norwegians do not really like listening to any kind of negative comments, be it about the system or anything else. So, avoid criticizing when on Norway tours.

The popular image of Norway is that of a cold and remote destination showered with an inhospitable climate. The image has some truth to it, but there is so much more to the weather patterns of Norway as they shift dramatically by season, topography, and the constant flow of the North Atlantic Current.

The different seasons provide various reasons for traveling to Norway as the long and dark days of winter provide ample opportunity to ski, dog-sled, ice fish, snowmobile, and of course, search for the northern lights. The warmer days of spring continue to bring skiing adventures as well as the popular Sámi festivals. The expanding daylight melts the snow to bring an innumerable number of cascades to decorate the beguiling fjords while prairies and plateaus glow with wildflowers. Autumn carries the golden sunlight and smaller crowds while maintaining the same beauty for which Norway is known. But summer remains the most popular season to visit Norway thanks to its frequent public transport connections, the endless sunlight, and access to the ample beauty of Norwegian scenery.

Summer temperatures can reach the low 80 degrees Fahrenheit but drop to negative 13 degrees Fahrenheit in winter. The temperatures of the inland areas differ greatly from those on the coastline, which feel the warming effects of the North Atlantic Current. July has the warmest trends with December to April hosting the most snowfall out of the year. Where and when you visit Norway informs your experience. If you prefer sun and greenery, late spring and summer are the best times to visit. If you want to experience the northern lights and perfect skiing conditions, late autumn and winter are your best chances.

The Lyrid Meteor Shower Peaks This Weekend — With Up to 18 Shooting Stars Per Hour

It's the first of 2 meteor showers happening this spring.

The next few weeks are busy with meteor showers, including the Lyrids’ peak this weekend — a show that could bring eye-popping fireballs, depending on the conditions. The Lyrid meteor shower, which peaks overnight from April 21-22, is the first of two spring meteor showers; the second, the Eta Aquariids, will peak in early May.

This weekend’s event could produce up to 18 streaking Lyrids per hour in peak conditions, according to NASA . Unfortunately, it hits during a bright waxing gibbous moon, which will make viewing trickier — but all is not lost. If you’re in a dark-sky destination from April 21-22, it’s still worth giving the Lyrids a go.

Here’s how and when to watch the 2024 Lyrid meteor shower, plus when to catch the next one.

What Makes the Lyrid Meteor Shower Special?

Debris and particles from Comet Thatcher create the Lyrids, an annual spring meteor shower known for vibrant fireballs (astonishingly bright meteors), as well as spontaneous outbursts. During the latter — which occurs when the shower generates an eye-popping number of shooting stars — happens roughly every 60 years, according to EarthSky . The next outburst isn’t expected to hit until 2042.

How to See the 2024 Lyrid Meteor Shower

The full 2024 Lyrid meteor shower runs from April 14 to 30, with peak activity striking between the Sunday and Monday night, according to The Planetary Society . Point your eyes toward the constellation Lyra to watch for the spectacle. It will rise above the northeast horizon around 10 p.m. While stargazers can technically view the Lyrid meteor shower from the southern hemisphere, it is easiest to observe it from the northern hemisphere.

Will 2024 be a Good Year for the Lyrid Meteor Shower?

This year, the bright moon, which will be out all night, will likely obscure many streaking meteors. Increase your odds of catching the show by watching from a stargazing-friendly destination — here are some of our favorite dark-sky getaways . Or, hold out just a bit longer to enjoy another spring meteor shower — the Eta Aquariids — which will peak near the dim, near-new moon on May 6.
