Tipuana tipu hails from the subtropical forests of Brazil and Bolivia where it’s fondly known as “Pride of Bolivia.” It’s also commonly known simply as the “tipu tree” and more colorfully as “rosewood,” referring to the high quality hardwood timber produced from its wood.

The tipu is a large, flat-topped shade tree that quickly grows to 15-20 feet tall and 20-30 feet wide. Then the tree slows its growth, increasing its size by about 40 percent over its lifetime.

The lime-green oblong leaflets symmetrically arranged down a central spine lend the tipu’s foliage the tropical look of a miniature palm while multitudes of tiny golden yellow flowers create a cheery atmosphere in the summer months.

Now that you know what this plant looks like, let’s talk about what it can do for you. Because of its flat-topped nature, think massive, living, green, sun umbrella. It quickly produces large areas of shade without growing so vertical that it steals neighbor’s views or robs them of sunlight.

The tree carries a full canopy of vibrant green foliage through the winter months but then curiously becomes briefly deciduous in late spring, shedding its leaves while most other deciduous trees are leafing out. This works out well along the West Coast, however. Our true summer heat doesn’t manifest itself until mid-June, by which time the foliage has fully returned.

And if you’re like me, disgusted with the proliferation of cheap children’s plastic toys, the tipu has an environmentally friendly treat for your little ones. Little tykes through young teens — and even fully grown children such as myself — will enjoy countless hours playing with the whirlybird, helicopter-like samara-style seeds that fall from the tree throughout summer.

A samara is a type of fruit with a flattened wing of fibrous, papery tissue that develops from the ovary wall. This enables the seed to ride the wind, helicopter-style, far from its parent, thus spreading the species.

The tipu needs ample room to spread out, upward of 30 feet. And to develop an aesthetically pleasing balanced branching structure, it also needs some training, especially in its younger, more formative years. Think of it as a fast growing and potentially unruly teenager with great potential under the right care and guidance.

Another complaint sometimes lodged against the tipu is that the fallen foliage and, to a larger extent, the dropped flowers, make a messy addition to your yard. I, on the other hand, consider the flower drop this tree’s greatest aesthetic attribute.

I love coming home in the late afternoon and enjoying the last golden rays of the day illuminating the yellow carpet of confetti-like flowers that have fallen from the centerpiece tree onto my circular drive.

Tipuana tipu wants full sun, lots of space and ample water when young, but it becomes exceptionally drought-tolerant with age. Although it is a subtropical tree, it can withstand freezes into the mid- to low 20s without missing a beat. This means it can be employed within nearly all low-elevation Bay Area climate zones, excepting the coldest interior pocket valleys.

Whether you need a hundred trees to shade a large asphalt parking lot or a strategically located single specimen to cool off a blistering backyard, I cannot think of a more delightful and enchanting living green ceiling.

Cooperstown Experience

Cooperstown, New York is home to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum - a destination dedicated to the heroes and history of the game.   Cooperstown All Star Village is a family baseball resort that hosts tournament camps each summer for youth teams. Each summer, 12U teams from all across the US travel to Cooperstown for a weeklong tournament and team experience.

    The majority of the now 13U team has been together since 2018. The squad planned to travel to Cooperstown, NY, for a week long tournament / team experience during the Summer of 2020. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team could not travel to Cooperstown.
