Kenny Neal & Tito Jackson Announce ‘Straight From the Heart’ World Tour 2022-23

Two of blue’s most acclaimed and exciting performers are teaming up and taking their show on the road. The illustrious Tito Jackson and critically lauded Kenny Neal will share their guitar process when they join forces on their upcoming ‘Straight From The Heart Tour’ , commencing August 27th in Winston-Salem, S.C.

Kenny Neal is a vital modern proponent of Baton Rouge swamp blues and a second-generation southern Louisiana bluesman mindful of the region’s venerable blues traditions. His dad, harpist Raful Neal, was a Baton Rouge blues mainstay whose pals included Buddy Guy and Slim Harpo (the latter gave three-year-old Kenny his first harmonica.) At age 13, Neal played in his father’s band, and at 17, he landed a job playing bass for Buddy Guy.

Neal’s sizzling guitar work, sturdy harp, and gravelly, aged-beyond-his-years vocals served him well, and he cut four albums for Alligator Records between 1989 and 1994. An acclaimed 1991 stint on Broadway in a production of Mule Bone found him performing acoustic versions of Langston Hughes’ poetry set to music by Taj Mahal. Kenny’s 2016 release, Bloodline , was nominated for a Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album and won two BMAs (Blues Music Awards); one for Best Contemporary Blues Album and the other for Best Contemporary Male Blues Artist.

Neal’s 17th album, Straight From the Heart (Ruf Records), is currently enjoying international critical acclaim.

Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Tito Jackson has spent his entire life enchanting music lovers with soulful harmonies interwoven with curvaceous rhythms as a member of Motown’s most significant discovery, The Jackson 5, and presently as a multi-faceted solo artist. One of the performing highlights of Jackson’s remarkable career was the reunion performance of The Jacksons on one of history’s most-watched television specials, Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever .

Tito’s unyielding passion for blues, R&B, pop, and other music forms is the secret to his boundless energy and rare achievements. He has worked with countless fine musicians, singers, and producers, such as the preeminent production team of Gamble & Huff, LA Reid & Baby Face,

Tito has released two solo records, 2016’s Tito Time (Epic) and 2021’s Under Your Spell (Gulf Coast / Hillside Global)

Tito Jackson, Kenny Neal Set Off Blues-Heavy Tour Through 2023

by Tina Benitez-Eves July 12, 2022, 9:37 am

Tito Jackson and blues singer and multi instrumentalist Kenny Neal are taking the blues on the road on their upcoming Straight From The Heart Tour in the U.S., which will kick off on Aug. 27 with select dates through Feb. 4, 2023.

Videos by American Songwriter

A second-generation bluesman, Kenny Neal is bringing his swamp blues roots to the tour. Kenny’s father was Baton Rouge blues mainstay and harpist Raful Neal, who was friends with Buddy Guy and Slim Harpo—the latter giving 3-year-old Kenny his first harmonica. At 13, Neal was already playing in his father’s band, and by the age 17 started playing bass for Buddy Guy.

Neal, 64, recently released his 17th album Straight from the Heart in 2022, which features collaborations with Jackson on several tracks, including “Two Timing.” The musician also received a Best Contemporary Blues Album Grammy nod for this 2016 release Bloodline , which also picked up two Blues Music Awards for Best Contemporary Blues Album and Best Contemporary Male Blues Artist.

Neal recently released the documentary The Making of Mount Up On The Wings Of The King , a look behind his Straight from the Heart track of the same name, featuring Jackson, Eric O. Harper, and Christone ‘Kingfish’ Ingram.

Earlier in his career, Neal released four albums with Alligator Records from 1989 through 1994 and had a brief stint on Broadway in a production of Mule Bone where he performed acoustic versions of Langston Hughes’ poetry set to music by blues artists Taj Mahal.

Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame with his brothers as The Jackson 5 in 1997, Jackson, 68, has crossed over multiple genres as a solo artist since his era-defining start with The Jackson 5. A love for blues, R&B, pop, and more, Jackson has collaborated with dozens of artists, songwriters and producers throughout his carer and released two solo albums, including debut Tito Time in 2016 and his most recent in 2021, Under Your Spell .

Chicago Concert Reviews

Chicago Concert Reviews

We’ve got the windy city covered., tito jackson talks the jacksons’ hard rock homecoming, famous family and the blues.

Posted by Andy Argyrakis

The Jacksons

When several surviving members of The Jacksons reunited for the “Unity” Tour exactly a decade ago, including an appearance at the now shuttered Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville, fans flocked from literally everywhere to catch a glimpse of the world’s most famous musical family.

While various line-ups kept up a considerable presence on the road, performing everything from The Jackson 5 to memories of Michael, the brothers haven’t technically returned home to Gary as a group, but that’s all about to change when Jackie, Tito and Marlon mount a Hard Rock Live homecoming on the grounds of the Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana come Friday, February 18.

Though The Jacksons don’t have new collective music at the moment, Tito touched base with Chicago Concert Reviews surrounding the release of his bluesy solo project, “Under Your Spell,” and of course, reflected on sharing success with so many superstar siblings, from their earliest days with Motown to selling out stadiums.

Whenever you’re on your way back to town, what runs through your mind?

Tito Jackson: Just wanting to see some of the people that I grew up with, and going by and seeing some of the schools. [Last time], I was depressed to see how terrible Beckman Junior High looked that I went to prior to coming to California.

Beyond your involvement with the casino and concert hall, what are your goals for reviving the city of Gary?

Jackson: Basically, it’s trying to move bigger businesses into the region, such as your Microsofts or the Walmarts and people of that sort cause jobs are number one. You can rebuild a city, but you’ve gotta have the jobs that spin the economy and the pride in it. The main thing right now is trying to keep that involvement and interest going. Of course, we plan to do something with the house there on 2300 Jackson Street, museum-wise. I don’t know if it’s gonna be a museum at the house or another location.

The Jacksons

What’s going to be the tone of this Hard Rock homecoming show?

Jackson: It’s just a big celebration. We’re celebrating The Jackson 5. We’re celebrating Michael, The Jacksons and the family. We’re gonna be singing all the hits. We’re just gonna have a good time and have a party on stage.

When was the last time you performed in or around Gary?

Jackson: We performed in Merrillville at the Star Plaza [in 2012]. That’s the last time I remember The Jacksons being there, but I’ve been there on occasion for performing. There’s that [Michael Jackson Tribute] festival my mom, [Katherine], had started after Michael had passed, so I was there. That was about four years ago I think. It might even be five now. Time goes so quickly when you’re older!

What do you miss most about your brother Michael?

Jackson: I just miss his joy and his kidding, just the person he was. Nothing music-wise. I still hear his music every day. I just miss him as a brother, you know? Just calling him on the phone, talking to him or whatever.

You just appeared on Lifetime’s documentary about your sister Janet. What are you hoping viewers take away from it?

Jackson: Well, Janet is a star in her own. I’m just there as her big brother to let the world know it and shine some light on my baby sister. She deserves it. She’s a hard worker. She’s dedicated to the craft and that’s what it was about.

What has it been like having all of your siblings have success in their own individual lanes?

The Jacksons

You also made new music with the album, “Under Your Spell.” Could you give us a rundown of that project?

Jackson: “Under Your Spell” was a fun project for me. It’s a project I had already knew I was gonna do many years back cause it’s got some different rhythms on it. My guests on that project are Stevie Wonder, Bobby Rush, my brother Marlon, Joe Bonamassa, Eddie Levert, my cousin Steven Powell and also B.B. King’s daughter Claudette. It was an album where I invited a lot of my friends to participate in. The first single was entitled, “Love One Another,” with Stevie Wonder, Marlon, Bobby Rush and Kenny Neal.

What made you gravitate more towards the blues in your solo career?

Jackson: Well man, I’m from the Chicago area. That’s where the blues is really hot. Just being from that area, my father [Joseph] used to play a lot of blues with my Uncle Milton prior to The Jackson 5. We wanted to be like him. I gravitated toward the guitar and I’ve always played blues. Even before “I Want You Back” and The Jackson 5 were famous, we had blues numbers in our show. Once those hits started coming, all the way up through “Dancing Machine” and even beyond, blues was the second thing on the brothers’ mind, as far as putting it as part of the show. I’ve always messed around on my guitar. Now that I have time, I’m doing my blues.

Some folks have credited you as being the first ever boy band or at least band of brothers. How do you feel about those descriptions?

Jackson: No, no, there were other acts that I can recall, such as The Five Stairsteps. They were from Chicago too and they were doing their thing sort of around the same time that we were. The only difference between us and them was that they were already professional. I believe they had a couple of records out at that time. We just wanted to be a part of that thing. we used to open up for them, Jackie Wilson, Bobby Taylor & The Vancouvers, Gladys Knight, Etta James and James Brown. Between the Regal Theater in Chicago, and the Apollo and the Uptown, it just kept us circulating all the time.

The Jacksons

Jackson: Those were some interesting times because I recall sometime after we had auditioned for Motown, we went home and we sat dormant, I will say at least six months, maybe even longer, but we had told our friends we had signed with Motown. They were happy and then later on they whispered in the neighborhoods, “you’re in the same place doing the same things. I thought ya’ll said you signed with Motown.” We said “we did! We got a record coming out. We’re going in soon to record.” So it took a little time, but I remember hearing “I Want You Back” for the first time on the radio. We all heard it pretty much together and it was a friend of ours across the street [who told us it was on]. We had moved to California by this time and he came running in with his transistor. It sounded great on the radio for the first time and it still does today. “I Want You Back” is one of my favorites. It was exciting to get to perform for people like the Queen of England doing jubilees, and things of that nature, and seeing sights that you read about in school, like the Eiffel Tower, Big Ben and the Great Wall of China. It was educational and the music was fun.

How about evolving as artists as The Jacksons in the later 70s?

Jackson: That was a time when music had taken a different lane and the brothers had moved away from Motown, being that we wanted to write our songs and play our instruments on our records. Of course, Motown has a great rhythm section already, they use the same arrangers and I guess they thought, “if it ain’t broke, why try to fix it?” We had moved off, for whatever reason, and we had to do things a little different. We incorporated [producers] Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff, and our deal with Epic Records was that we’d get to produce and write two or three songs on every album. That was enough, so we would write and they would write the rest of the album. Songs that we wrote became famous, and then by, I think the third album, we started doing the complete albums, starting from “Destiny.” From there, we had “Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground),” “Enjoy Yourself” and “Show You The Way To Go.” We had quite a few hit records in that time.

Any specific recollections of the Motown 25 event that came shortly thereafter?

The Jacksons

How about keeping the momentum going in the ‘80s surrounding the “Victory” era?

Jackson: We had written “Destiny, the “Triumph” album and the “Victory” album. Michael was hot as a firecracker and that’s when the “Victory” days went on in 1984, I believe it was, and we did a lot of stadiums. We would go into a city, set up and do at least three stadium dates in all the major cities in America. We wound up doing seven nights in Dodger Stadium. It was the first time for me playing in front of that many people consecutively, so I enjoyed that.

What about the time when all six brothers got together for a reunion at Madison Square Garden, which just so happened to be on September 10, 2001?

Jackson: That was Michael’s 30th anniversary as a solo artist. It was very unusual. I remember finishing that second show, cause we did two nights at the Garden, and I’m waking up [the next morning], looking out the window, seeing all the smoke and hearing sirens. One of my brothers, I can’t remember who, called me to say, “turn on the TV” and that’s when I learned about the whole tragedy. We were all stuck in the city. Janet sent out some of her tour buses to pick up the family. They wouldn’t let anybody in or anybody out after a certain time, so we had to walk to the city line and board the bus because there was F-15s flying through the sky.

On a happier note, how were the shows themselves?

The Jacksons

What is your take on music at the moment?

Jackson: I like old school. I like the new stuff too. I’m an admirer of some stuff that Bruno Mars does and I’ve always liked Anderson .Paak because they have a new sound on their thing, [Silk Sonic], but they’re doing old school music, if you really listen to it. I hear a lot of Jackson 5 in their tunes sometimes.

Will we hear anything new from the group?

Jackson: Yeah, I think you will within a couple of years. This is probably gonna be the last one. I would bet my way on that, as far as from the brothers, but I think you’ll see one in the next year or two.

And what would be the flavor of The Jacksons in the 2020s?

Jackson: Man, we’re gonna do what we do, make some hit records!

Do you have anything else to add before “Goin’ Back To Indiana”?

Jackson: I just wanted to say “thank you” to all the millions of fans around the world for supporting myself, and my brothers and sisters. Without you, we wouldn’t be anything, so thank you so much for loving the music!

Members of The Jacksons, Indiana’s first family of music, will play for a hometown crowd at a one-night-only show.

Marlon, Tito and Jackie Jackson kick off of their 2022 international tour with a show Feb. 18 at Hard Rock Live, Hard Rock Casino Northern Indiana’s new performance venue. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.

Jermaine and Michael Jackson were also members of the original Jackson 5. Michael Jackson died in 2009. Jermaine Jackson now lives in the Middle East and only performs with the Jacksons occasionally, according to Hard Rock Casino Northwest Indiana spokesperson Pat Kremer.

The Jacksons were a part of the venue’s grand opening in May 2021 but have not performed in their hometown in several decades.

Some of the songs fans will hear include “ABC,” “I’ll Be There,” “Can You Feel It” and “Blame It on the Boogie.”

Originally known as the Jackson 5 and later The Jacksons, they are members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Inside the Hard Rock Live venue lobby is a tribute to the Jacksons, with each family member represented with personal artifacts and stories about their time inside their childhood home at 2300 Jackson Street.

Other nods to the Jacksons can be found throughout the property, including the 37-foot-tall guitar marquee at the entrance modeled after Joseph Jackson’s guitar, outfits worn on stage, Michael Jackson’s famous glove and the red leather jacket he wore in the “Beat It” video.

For a full Jackson experience, fans should visit the casino’s Hard Rock Café and order “The Triumph,” a chicken sandwich created exclusively for the location by Marlon, Tito, Jackie and Jermaine Jackson.

Tito Jackson, 68, lived in Gary until he was 14 and has fond memories of his hometown.

“It’s always exciting to come home and perform for — basically ex-neighbors from childhood,” he said. “Most of my childhood was in Gary, Indiana. That’s where I’m from. I was born there and raised there.”

The Jacksons’ career started in Gary and Chicago, he said. They performed with acts like The Chi-Lites, The Five Stairsteps, Jackie Wilson and Etta James.

“We played the Apollo once and after that we had the choice to do ‘The Dick Cavett Show’ or go audition for Berry Gordy,” Tito Jackson said. “We chose the Berry Gordy route. That was in 1968. In 1969, Motown moved to California and we moved with them. That’s when ‘I Want You Back’ came out.”

“I Want You Back” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Jackson 5 made music history when four debut singles all reached No. 1 and sold more than 200 million records. In 1976, the group left Motown for Epic Records and changed their name to The Jacksons.

Marlon Jackson, 64, lives in Georgia now. He’s excited about performing in Gary again.

“We’re definitely looking forward to that. It’s going to be cold, but we’re looking forward to it,” Marlon Jackson said.

He remembered performing in a talent show as a child in Gary as well as performing in clubs in Chicago before signing with Motown Records and moving away.

“We started singing with my mom, country western music because that’s what she liked,” Marlon Jackson said. “She told my father we could harmonize and he didn’t believe her. He listened to us and after that he was on it.”

The show at Hard Rock Live will be a walk down memory lane for fans, he said.

“You’re going to hear all the songs we made and we do one or two of Michael’s songs. And all the songs that the Jackson 5 Jacksons made — ‘I Want You Back,’ ‘Dancing Machine,’ ‘Enjoy Yourself,’ ‘Blame it on the Boogie,’ ‘Shake Your Body.’ All those songs. We have a lot of songs.”

They bring a full band along.

“We don’t believe in tracks. We’re old school,” Tito Jackson said.

“People seem to have a great time. Which is great,” Marlon Jackson said of the show.

He still enjoys making music with his brothers.

“We get to reminisce and have fun on stage,” Marlon Jackson said. “We talk about the good times. We feel (Michael’s) spirit onstage.”

Audiences should expect to have fun and reminisce along with the brothers, Marlon Jackson said.

“We want to thank the people for supporting us throughout the years because without them we wouldn’t be where we are today,” he said. “We don’t take it for granted. We really appreciate it.”

Tito Jackson recently released a solo blues/R&B album called “Under Your Spell” featuring music royalty, including Stevie Wonder, Marlon Jackson, Bobby Rush, George Benson, Joe Bonamassa, Claudette King and Kenny Neal.

“You’re going to hear all the hits The Jacksons have done over the years as well as some of the new music,” Tito Jackson said of the concert. “You’re going to hear a couple of my songs from my album. It’s going to be a lot of fun. It’s like old friends getting back together and having one big party. I invited everyone to come out and party and jam with us. It’s going to be great.”

The concert is for adults age 21 and older.

Tito and Jackie Jackson On ‘Michael Jackson the Immortal’ Tour and Fan Fest

By Benjy Eisen

Benjy Eisen

Cirque du Soleil ’s Michael Jackson the Immortal World Tour opened in Las Vegas this past weekend, where it will run through December 27th before traveling the world. In conjunction with the premiere of the Cirque show, a memorabilia exhibit called Michael Jackson Fan Fest opened at Las Vegas’ Mandalay Bay Resort (now through December 14th).

To celebrate the fanfare, Jackson brothers Tito and Jackie attended both openings, along with their mother, Katherine, Michael’s children, and family friends including producer Berry Gordy and “Thriller” director John Landis. Rolling Stone caught up with the Jackson brothers to get their take on the celebrity-filled affair.

What’s been the most emotional part of all of this for you? Tito: It’s all emotional, I must say to you, because my brother’s my brother. I don’t look at him through a fan’s eye. I look at him through a brother’s eye. At Fan Fest, just being around his clothing and all that – it’s emotional. I mean, they’re beautiful costumes and some of them I’ve seen him wear before. Just to know that he actually wore these things and these were his belongings but he’s not in them anymore – it’s emotional.

They were playing “I Want You Back” on the intercom and all of the sudden here’s Mr. Berry Gordy standing next door to me, right there, and it’s like full circle. We both looked at each other and got a little teary eyed and I said, “Boss, do you remember those days?” He said, “How could I forget? Thank you for reminding me.”

Those were beautiful times in our life. We were young, we were kids, we were full of energy, everything was polished, we were ready to go and we did it like that – five boys from Gary, Indiana.

Jackie: Hearing “ABC” and “I Want You Back” and all those songs that we did together as a group – it was so emotional then.   The wonderful thing about the Immortal show is that Cirque didn’t try to find someone to impersonate Michael; they just try to recreate his essence. Is this it, in terms of large scale productions, for Michael Jackson ? Jackie: I wouldn’t say no – you never know what’s going to happen next. But Cirque is an icon; so is Michael Jackson. So you put the two together like this, people expect to see something fantastic. And it is. It’s such a great show. It’s very entertaining.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Tito: I feel that as far as Michael’s legend, there will be even greater things coming in the future for Michael. Because I feel that he was more than just a performer – he was a humanitarian. And that part of his life was most important for me, because he really cared about our world and our society and feeding hunger and making this world a better place. So with that being said, I feel that that overrides…I would like for him to be remembered in those aspects as well as his music.

What about the Jackson brothers? Do you guys ever plan on doing something new, again? Jackie: Oh, there’s going to be a lot of great things in the future. We’re working on some things right now. I can’t say what though, just now.

How involved were you with the Immortal production? Jackie: From the very beginning, I was there helping them put things together and they brought me down before the show came out and they did a whole run through for me and I was with the whole team. I was just so happy to help them and they were so excited just to meet me; it brought back tears in my eyes.

To everybody else, Michael is an icon and a legend. But, to you two, he’s your brother. So what do you think about something like Fan Fest, where they display some of his personal belongings? Tito: Well, you know, first of all, to come here and to see how many people love my brother, and to be around his fans – which are Jacksons fans as well – it makes you feel good. It makes you feel that you’re part of Michael and that you’re being around what he loved. So I actually get a good feeling when I’m around Michael’s belongings and his fans and that whole thing. It makes you feel good. It makes you feel like my brother’s still alive – it’s a good feeling.

An actor from Iowa is in the Tony-winning Michael Jackson musical coming to Des Moines

tito jackson tour

A cast member in the award-winning Michael Jackson musical headed to Des Moines at the end of April grew up in Iowa.

Josh A. Dawson, who lived in Cedar Rapids from nearly birth until high school, plays two roles, Quincy Jones and Tito Jackson, in the Tony-winning production “MJ.” The musical comes to the Des Moines Civic Center from April 30 through May 5.

The musical is centered around the making of the 1992 “Dangerous World Tour” and the King of Pop who was responsible for enduring hits such as “Thriller,” “Billie Jean,” “Smooth Criminal” and more.

The actor, who has been involved in national tours of “Hamilton” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” now calls Los Angeles and New York his homes but returns to Iowa at least once a year.

“There’s something about driving through those cornfields that is therapeutic, cathartic,” Dawson said in an interview with the Des Moines Register. “The Midwest is unlike any other place, and I have lived in every corner of this country. I’ve been to all 50 states multiple times. This is my fifth national tour. But there is something about that sort of southern Minnesota-Iowa thing that it’s unlike any other place in the country and I love the pace. I love the vibration. I miss it so much honestly.”

Dawson spoke about the musical, favorite Iowa things and his pursuit of performing arts with the Register ahead of the show’s arrival to Des Moines.

Note:  Answers edited for clarity and length.

What Michael Jackson fans and casual listeners alike can take away from 'MJ'

Des Moines Register: I imagine there are folks who are mega-Michael Jackson fans to those who’ve only listened to what the radio would play. What do you think both kinds of people can walk away from after seeing “MJ”?

Dawson: There’s one thing that Quincy Jones said, and I love him for this: I don’t believe in genres of music. I only believe in good and bad music. ... It is the life force of our species. Doesn’t matter who you are, race, creed, color, sexuality, gender orientation, geographic location, the common denominator in all of our species is good music, and when you can tap into that soul, that rhythm, that vibration, it doesn’t matter who you are.

And there are very few artists in our history that have been able to tap into that universal music. Michael Jackson was probably the greatest artist to do that ... I have seen kids around 2 or 3 come to the show and I have seen people who actually were at the concerts listening to Jackson 5 and the “Victory Tour” and the "Dangerous [World] Tour," and all of them are reacting the same way which tells me that it’s not about the story. Yes, we get to see insight into this person, and I think as a culture, it’s really important for us to start seeing humans, even celebrities, as that. As humans first.

Yes, they have a lot of followers. Yes, they have a lot of fame and fortune, but the common denominator is that we share blood. We share bones. We share trauma. We share a willingness to lean into the future, and I think that’s what Michael Jackson wanted to, more so than anything, he wanted to put love and kindness and compassion and empathy into his music and I think that is the testament to why so many people are connecting with this piece …What I like to say is, all you need to do is come to this show and you will be transformed.

'MJ' actor shares his favorites

Des Moines Register: Were there any favorite spots of yours in Cedar Rapids as a kid growing up?

Dawson: There is a little Italian place, I think it’s kind of mixed through that area — Cedar Rapids, Iowa City — called Zio Johno’s . And their tortellini, if you haven’t had it, it is to die for… there was a barbecue place, I know it’s closed down… but it was called Al and Irene’s and it was just some of the best barbecue I’ve ever had. Maybe I’m biased. Maybe that was just my first introduction to barbecue and so it’s more nostalgic than it is anything else.

I would say between those two places, and of course, anyone from Iowa, Midwest knows Hy-Vee and a Hy-Vee breakfast — it just is unlike any other thing and I cannot wait to get back to Iowa. Between Hy-Vee and Dairy Queen, a cherry dilly bar, c’mon. It does the thing.

Des Moines Register: What are your favorite Michael Jackson songs, whether it’s ones you’ve loved throughout your entire life or new ones you’ve discovered?

Dawson: I’m actually very, very familiar with his discography and I have been. My parents listened to Prince and Michael Jackson growing up — as a matter of fact, my stepfather sang background for Prince for over 20, 30 years. It’s always been a part of my home. My dad was putting on CDs and vinyls and things like that, so I’d say probably, “Don’t Stop 'Til You Get Enough” is iconic for me. Those string arrangements.

I love “Thriller.” It’s a testament to the piece that every October he somehow goes to the top of the charts, and he has been transitioned from this plain for several years and that’s a testament to his craft, his music, his excellence. I love “[I] Can’t Help It.” Not only is it Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson, but Stevie Wonder actually wrote that song, so you have just juggernauts of songwriting sort of converging on one piece.

Des Moines Register: Tell me more about your journey into theater. What drew you to it?

Dawson : I did my first musical at the age of 6, in the first grade. It was a musical called “Stone Soup” ... as I can remember from elementary school on, I have done a musical every year since then… 2021 and 2020, those were probably the only years that I did not do musical theater.

I went to college for it. I did it all through high school. I grew up in church. My dad’s a pastor, grandfather, I come from a long lineage of preachers. It was just sort of the only medium that I found that I could sing, act and dance. My parents were very gracious and saw that I had a passion for it from a very young age and put me in dance classes and acting classes and singing lessons. And I did that, and I’m still doing it.

Next season: 'Back to the Future,' 'Shucked' among the touring Broadway shows headed to Des Moines

How can I get tickets to see ‘MJ’ the musical in Des Moines?

  • Singer with ‘Iowa roots’ has dual role in Michael Jackson musical (AUDIO)

by Matt Kelley | Apr 26, 2024

tito jackson tour

A performer who splits his time between New York and L.A. will be back the state he considers home as the new Michael Jackson musical “MJ” makes its Iowa debut next week.

Actor, singer and dancer Josh Dawson was born in Atlanta but moved to Cedar Rapids with his parents at age two. While he lived in Iowa through middle school before his folks moved again, Dawson credits his years here for all he learned about the importance of kindness and hard work.

“No matter where I go, I’ve been to 32 different countries, I’ve lived all over the world, you just can’t take the Iowa out of me,” Dawson says. “I love cornfields and I love when that sky comes over the plains. It’s just so peaceful and I always try to get back to my Iowa roots. It grounds me and humbles me.”

Dawson has a dual role in the touring Broadway production of MJ, playing both one of Jackson’s brothers and celebrated producer and songwriter Quincy Jones.

“The brother that I play, Tito Jackson, was also the musician of the family, and so I’m a musician, I’m in a band and I get to sort of live out my full self onstage,” Dawson says. “It’s so wonderful.” Dawson says he also feels he shares a lot in common with Jones, as he feels he’s being called to center his artistry around other artists who he can help to achieve the next level.

The storyline follows the King of Pop for just a few days around the making of the 1992 Dangerous World Tour. Dawson says he has great respect for Jackson, who died in 2009.

“The way that he saw art was in a very different way than most people, and he just was a master of his craft,” Dawson says. “We kind of have the inside look and a behind-the-scenes look into this amazing tour that was wildly successful, and in it, we sprinkle some flashbacks of his life.”

The musical’s soundtrack is a wide sampling of Jackson’s long history as a performer, and Dawson says it’s timeless and transcends generations, like the Beatles or Elvis. Dawson says music is a uniting, universal truth in a world that’s very divided.

“We just love good music. We love to be able to escape and just listen and dance,” Dawson says. “I know that the show is going to be able to provide that for people, just a moment of breath. There’s so much going on in the world, for three hours, I know that people can tune that out and just enjoy the sounds, the sights, the colors, the dancing.”

MJ will open at the Des Moines Civic Center on Tuesday, running through May 5th.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.
