Even though I’d been to the Vatican previously, re-visiting on my 10 day birthday trip to Paris and Italy last year was absolutely magical.

I felt so fortunate to have been linked up with The Roman Guy tours . Not only were there were only 3 people on my Vatican tour versus the groups of 25-50 around us but my guide Nina was a local fashionista! After the tour ended, she gave me the inside scoop on what to wear to the Vatican plus shared her tips on how to dress like an Italian woman. LOVED her!

These tips on what to wear to the Vatican are based on her fashion savvy Roman style. Keep reading to find out why they are!

What to Wear to the Vatican

Generally speaking when entering any religious building modesty should be considered. However, depending on varying factors this may or may not be enforced or practiced.

Per local guidelines, when visiting the Vatican please cover your knees and shoulders.

Even though Roman summers may be blistering hot, when you step inside the Vatican Museum and St Peters Basilica it is much cooler inside than outside so you don’t have to worry about overheating. Here are a few ideas on what to wear to the Vatican in the summer heat.

Vatican travel outfit ideas

The general idea is to wear a breezy long dress or trousers (for knee coverage) and pair with a light removable layer such as a denim jacket or cardigan you can wear to cover your shoulders once inside. Jeans and a cute sleeved top are perfect when the weather is moderate.

The rest of the year, you’ll be fine with long sleeves and jeans. Just be mindful of low necklines, sheer fabrics, and clothing that’s overly fitting in certain places.

Tip:  Versatile is the key to a  travel capsule wardrobe , pack items which you can easily mix and match!

About my Vatican Tour

If the name Roman Guy sounds familiar it might be because the owner proposed to his girlfriend on Travel Fashion Girl! Can you believe it? How cool is that!

I explored the Ancient City on my own when I visited Rome previously in 2008. This time around, I was happy to try a couple of city tours with The Roman Guy including a visit to the Vatican and their Golf Cart City Tour which I highly recommend – it helps save your feet from going into overdrive and it’s a nice way to get your bearings around Rome!

This company specializes in intimate local group tours and their Vatican group has no more than a dozen people at a time (others had 40-50). It felt like I had my own personal guide. Plus, you get to go inside the Vatican a whole hour before it’s open to the public. Kind of awesome!

I won’t lie, though. My fashionable Vatican tour guide Nina did make it extra special because not only did she have a PHD in post classical archaeology and a master in Christian Archaeology but she is also extremely friendly and personable. It was like hanging out with one of your favorite gal pals!

Insider travel tips

  • March and October are Nina’s favorite months to enjoy Rome. March because it’s sunny but not hot and the end of September to early October has the best weather without the high costs or swarms of tourists.
  • She says that Cappuccino and Cornetto are the perfect roman breakfast or a simple Coffee and Croissant.
  • Her perfect travel outfit for the Vatican? What she was wearing that day: Denim Jacket, Maxi Dress, and Birkenstocks styled to perfection!
Remember: No matter where you go there are always travelers with varying levels of respect and courtesy with regards to their choice of clothing in religious sites. It is your decision whether or not you wish to adhere to or respect the clothing guidelines of other cultures on your travels. Please read this post for more ideas on how to dress stylishly for conservative countries .

Great info for those of us who are traveling to see ancient treasures. On my first trip to Italy, I was a little surprised, but then filled with respect, at the dress code for visiting churches. I would love to find your Vatican tour guide – what a wonderful woman! For new visitors: in many cities in Italy, there are street vendors conveniently located near the legendary churches that sell pashminas and truly beautiful lacy wraps for visitors.

Hi Melissa, so pleased you enjoyed the article! Thank you for sharing your travel tip for Italy with us, this is really helpful to know. Happy travels! ?

Vatican Dress Code – What to Wear When Visiting Vatican City

Millions of tourists visit the Vatican every year and despite it’s widely known that sacred places require modest wearing, many are still denied entrance because of their wrong outfit. This is why it’s so important to be aware of the Vatican dress code for both men and women.

While in winter it’s easier to follow the dress code required in the Vatican because whatever you wear, you are likely to have a coat on top, summer is usually the season when most tourists are sent away. Both men and women need to follow the Vatican dress code, which comes down to the common principles of modesty and decency.

Since Vatican City includes some of the main landmarks in Rome , you will certainly want to visit them, so knowing what to wear is very important.

Fret not, here we are giving you all the tips you need to know about the dress code for visiting the Vatican to avoid any problems at the entrance, whether you are visiting independently or joining a Vatican tour .

Image: St. Peter's Basilica where the Vatican dress code is required.

Vatican dress code for women

Female tourists often encounter more issues, especially in the hot season. Summer months in Rome , and in Italy in general, can be very hot so shorts, dresses, and sleeveless tops are common. However, even with such hot weather, there are plenty of outfits you can wear to go to the Vatican without spending the rest of your sightseeing day sweating and panting.

When visiting the Vatican, women should avoid wearing mini-skirts, sleeveless tops, tops with deep cleavage, shorts that are above the knees, and hats. Also, jewelry and tattoos that are too big, too visible, and in some way offensive to religion or common décor should be kept covered.

Here are a few suggestions of items women can wear to enter the Vatican sights that are good in all seasons:

  • long skirts
  • midi skirts
  • long dresses (not sleeveless)
  • midi dresses (not sleeveless)
  • long linen or cotton trousers
  • long denim trousers
  • Capri pants, meaning all leggings or trousers below the knee
  • long-sleeve shirts and blouses
  • short-sleeve t-shirts
  • 3/4-sleeve shirts

Image: Summer outfit for women that meets the Vatican dress code.

Vatican dress code for men

To visit the Vatican, men, too, are required to follow a modest dress code. Just like women, also men are not allowed to wear hats, short shorts, and sleeveless T-shirts. And just like women, men, too, are required not to show large tattoos or personal objects that are too visible and somehow offensive to religion or lack common and moral decency.

Here are some suggested items men can wear to visit the Vatican that are accepted both in summer and winter:

  • long trousers/denim
  • Bermuda shorts below the knees
  • long-sleeve tops
  • long-sleeve button-down shirts

Image: Summer outfit for men that meets the Vatican dress code.

Vatican dress code for kids

The Vatican dress code is not strictly applied to newborns and toddlers for obvious reasons. Kids and teenagers, however, should follow the same principles of modesty.

Teenage girls won’t be allowed in if wearing mini-skirts and sleeveless tops, and teenage boys

What to avoid carrying when visiting the Vatican

Apart from the clothing items that you can’t wear when visiting the Vatican, there are also several items that are not allowed in. Here are some of the things you shouldn’t carry with you if you are going to the Vatican, whether it’s the Basilica of Saint Peter or you are visiting the Vatican Museums .

  • sharp metal objects
  • large backpacks
  • longer umbrellas
  • camera tripods
  • video cameras
  • alcoholic drinks
  • foods and beverages

If you still carry some of these things such as a large backpack or a long umbrella, it will be stored in the wardrobe, which is free of charge. Obviously, the Vatican Museums are not going to store weapons in the wardrobe! Since you might not be renting a room near the Vatican , it’s better to check beforehand what you are carrying.

Pets are not allowed to enter any of the Vatican sights. An exception is made for guide dogs for blind people and dogs certified for pet therapy (on a leash and wearing a muzzle).

What to wear if you meet the Pope

Those lucky enough to have a private appointment with the pope lined up are also required to follow a specific dress code.

Men should wear a tuxedo, while women are required to wear a modest dress below the knees, long sleeves, and obviously no cleavage. Women meeting with the Pope should also wear a black veil on their heads as if in a grieving outfit.

I remember when Ivanka and Melania Trump visited the Pope in 2017, their black veil triggered countless jokes on social media. This is because most people are not familiar with the Vatican dress code, as this is exactly how women are supposed to appear in the pope’s presence.

For example, the red dress of Raissa Gorbaciova in 1989 and the white outfit of Cherie Blair when meeting the Pope in 2006 were both faux pas because red is too bright and white dresses are only prerogative of Catholic queens and members of royal families such as the queen of Spain and the queen of Belgium.

Navigating the Vatican Dress Code: Dos and Don’ts Explained

  • Planning your trip
  • vatican city

January 4, 2024

If you’re traveling to the Italian capital, it’s very likely a trip to the Vatican is high on your agenda. And why wouldn’t it be? You may also be wondering if there’s a Vatican dress code you should keep in mind.  Spoiler: there is. Acting as a modern-day gateway into centuries worth of incredible history, the Vatican Museums are an example of awe-inspiring architecture and play host to a collection of art guaranteed to take your breath away. However, they do have some rules that need to be followed regarding dress code. If you want to enjoy the renowned space in all its splendor, you will be required to adhere to certain rules and regulations per the Vatican’s consideration .

When in Rome: How to dress for a visit to the Vatican

Like any religious site around the world, the Vatican asks its visitors to respect its system of rules, and included in these rules is a specific dress code. “Entry to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors,” reads the Vatican’s official statement . Prior to your visit to the Vatican, it’s highly recommended you consider this point, and–most importantly–whether or not you’re willing to accept the stipulations and act accordingly.

This is because the Vatican is an independent state and has the authority to impose its dress code throughout the city. As per the Vatican’s statement, this is to ensure “respect of the sacredness of the institutions.” Word to the wise; by choosing to ignore it you run the risk of being turned away.

What does “appropriately dressed” actually mean?

The Vatican makes reference to “appropriately dressed visitors,” but what does this mean exactly? Understanding the term goes a long way towards avoiding potential embarrassment or disappointment. Beginning with a Vatican decree, it’s emphasized that “low-cut or sleeveless attire, shorts, miniskirts, and hats are not permitted.” As a general guideline, ensuring your knees and shoulders remain covered serves as a reliable starting point for appropriate dress.

FAQ’s about the Vatican dress code

Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the dress code you need to follow in order to be certain that you’ll be granted access to the Vatican City and you won’t have any troubles.

Can I wear a t-shirt, tank top or turtleneck to the Vatican Museums?

Tank tops, vest tops, spaghetti-strap tops, sleeveless blouses and any revealing garments are a no-go when visiting the Vatican. This is definitely harder during Summer in Italy. In the summer, you should opt for shirts, t-shirts, or sleeved blouses which cover your shoulders, and sheer blouses that keep you cool while remaining covered–but just be sure you’re dressed modestly underneath any translucent materials. Avoid any transparent or semi-transparent clothes, otherwise.

Can I wear shorts, skirts or slacks in the Vatican?

B oth men and women should opt for lightweight trousers, preferably made of linen or cotton. Jeans fit the dress code, but there’s a good chance it will be much too hot to wear them, so with that in mind, it’s worth considering the do’s and don’ts when it comes to shorts and skirts. If you decide to wear a skirt, mini skirts are a no-no, so opt for a longer style and remain cool by choosing cotton or linen fabrics. And if all else fails and the contents of your suitcase are posing problems, you can pick up a skirt or pair of trousers cheaply around Ottaviano Street, which is located just around the corner from the Vatican, or at any of the major shops closer to the center of the city.

What shoes should I wear for a tour of the Vatican?

The Vatican website doesn’t actually make reference to footwear, but that doesn’t mean you get free rein when it comes to anything and everything beneath the ankle. Like every other aspect of your wardrobe decision-making ahead of your visit to the Vatican, err on the side of caution and choose a pair of shoes which won’t draw unwanted attention. Think flat, think comfortable, and think low-key. And avoid any footwear which could be considered loud or garish. Insider’s Tip: In the summer, men and women should opt for sandals or flats, as opposed to flip-flops.

Can I wear a hat in the Vatican?

In summer, many of us tend to wear baseball caps and sun hats to protect us from the sun’s rays, while in winter we opt for woolen hats and earmuffs to keep out the chill. In the Vatican, you can (and will) be expected to remove any type of hat before gaining entry to the religious site. Just like displaying too much skin is considered disrespectful, wearing a hat indoors is deemed equally bad manners.

What other things shouldn’t I take to the Vatican City?

According to the official website , visitors are required to leave all luggage, suitcases, rucksacks, and any packages or containers considered unsuitable by staff on account of their size or nature in the cloakroom before entering the exhibition spaces. Most umbrellas, sticks (apart from those used for walking), tripods and stands for photography, and video cameras must also be left in the cloakroom.

However, one thing you should take with you is a light scarf or long-sleeved cover-all. Not only will it come in handy if you think you’re in need of a little extra cover, but it will be a welcome addition if you tend to feel the chill in vast buildings like the Vatican!

What to wear to visit the Vatican: how to get the Vatican Dress code right

All you need to know about the Vatican Dress code. A practical guide to help you decide what to wear to visit the Vatican to be appropriate in all seasons .

If you are reading this guide about what to wear to visit the Vatican, chances are you already know a Vatican dress code exists and need to figure out precisely what it entails.

St Peter basiclia at the Vatican facade with fountain in the foreground

The Vatican Dress code worries many and horror stories of people being refused entrance based on their clothing choices have probably scared you however, respecting the Vatican dress code is not as hard as you may have come to believe.

While you need to abide by it, you won’t have to buy a new wardrobe to enter the Vatican nor wear your Sunday best. You also do not need to worry about the Vatican dress code unless you are visiting some parts of the State.

This is our no-nonsense guide to what to wear at the Vatican – I hope it will help you demystify the Vatican dress code conundrum!

Table of Contents

Why a dress code for the Vatican

Before we get stuck in with clothing advice, it is good to put the Vatican Dress code in context.

Vatican City is an independent State and the seat of the Pope, the head of the Catholic Church. It is a religious state, with many scared environments, and the dress code it enforces to show respect to the sacrality of the place.

The dress code applies to all indoor areas in Vatican city and this includes St Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Museums.

If you are sticking to outdoor areas such as St peter’s basilica, no dress code applies however, it is essential to be aware of the people around you.

While many will be curious tourists, many visitors to Vatican city come here for religious reasons so modest attire is to be preferred.

Good to know : the Vatican does not provide cover-ups on entering and there are no shops at the entrance to make a quick purchase. Make sure you are appropriately dressed before you get here to avoid disappointment.

What is the Vatican Dress code – what you cannot wear at the Vatican

The dress code of Vatican city calls for modest clothing, in particular(this is for men and women):

No strapless tops , spaghetti straps, tank tops, sleeveless tops that reveal shoulders and armpits

No mini-skirts (not even with tights, your knees need to be covered)

No see through clothing

No revealing necklines or barebacks

No offensive slogans on clothing or tattoos

No shape revealing outfits such as tight jumpsuits

Vatican dress code sign outside St Peter's Basilica at the Vatican

What you can wear at the Vatican

The above list of no-nos leaves a lot of room for things you can wear at the Vatican

Below the knee skirts

Long pants/ trousers – in summer, linen trousers are perfect as they keep you cool yet covered up

Sandals (see below our note about flip-flops)

What shoes to wear at the Vatican

There are no special rules about shoes at the Vatican and you can wear closed shoes or sandals.

While there is no specific rule about wearing flip flops at the Vatican, it is good practice not to.

Flip flopr are impractical for the location, often noisy and considered too casual. You may not be turned away becasue of your fliflops, but wearing is something you can get away with more than recommended attire.

Top tip : we have a handy guide about the best shoes to pack for Rome here . It includes info about wearing flip-flops in Rome and recommended alternatives.

How strict is the Vatican Dress Code: is the Vatican dress code enforced?

When it comes to enforcing the Vatican dress code, it is helpful to look at it from a couple of different perspectives:

  • What the code says.
  • What you can get away with.
  • What is the most respectful thing to do.

In terms of the rules outlines above yes, the Vatican Dress code is enforced and people regularly get turned away because they are wearing code-breaking outfits and are not appropriately dressed.

This doesn’t mean that you can never get away with a pair of shorts: I have seen girls entering St Peter’s Basilica with super short shorts and a sweater around their waist to partially cover their legs however, the fact that you can possibly get away with it doesn’t mean you should chance it.

As well as running a risk of being turned away, revealing clothing can be offensive to the people who are in Vatican City for religious reasons so dressing appropriately is a way to show respect to them and to the spirit of the place.

Is there a dress code for kids?

The Vatican dress code applies to all genders and ages but it is very lax for kids.

You wouldn’t want your kids in a swimsuit to visit the Vatican in summer but a tasteful summer dress of shorts on a toddler will pose no issues. Older tweens and teenagers should follow the rules set out for adults.

What to Pack for the Vatican: Dress Code, Tips and Suggestions

What to Pack for the Vatican: Dress Code, Tips and Suggestions

“Entry to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors,” says the Vatican official statement.

Vatican City follows a rigid dress code. Like any other religious sites in the world, the Vatican authorities expect its visitors to respect its system of rules and regulations. The Vatican is the official seat of the Roman Catholic Church. Thereby, we recommend adhering to the ancient institution’s stipulations when visiting or touring the Vatican.

‘Appropriately Dressed’: Decoding the Term

Sleeveless clothing, low-cut dresses, miniskirts, shorts above the knees and hats (on men) are not allowed within the ‘holy and sacred’ areas of the Vatican City.

The Vatican museum tour

Whether you are heading to the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica or any of the other small churches or chapels in the Holy See you need to follow the dress code. The key is to cover your shoulders, balls of the knees and stomachs, and this applies to both men and women.

What to Wear?

Sleeved blouses and t-shirts.

Vest tops, tank tops, spaghetti-strapped tops or any revealing garments are an absolute no-no when visiting the Holy See.

So, what to wear during the summer months?

Without exposing your cleavage or shoulders, you can try T-shirts, shirts and sleeved blouses. You can even opt for sheer blouses; they keep you cool while being covered.

The wise word is ‘dress modestly’, especially when you are wearing translucent materials.

Many women (and sometimes men) will bring a shawl to throw over their shoulders when entering the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s Basilica. A shawl will allow visitors to wear non-sleeved tops where possible, yet have the ability to cover up quickly when needed.

Vatican Tours

In winter, you naturally tend to cover yourself up, hence no worries.

Linen or Cotton Skirts and Trousers

Fret not; though there are restrictions on clothing, you can still stay cool and savour the religious masterpieces of the Vatican. For that, during the summer months we suggest lightweight trousers or ¾ pants made of cotton or linen. This will allow air to flow through your clothing in the often crowded and hot Vatican Museums.

Jeans are allowed in the Vatican but they are not recommended in the summer months as the heavy material can make you sweat and feel uncomfortable. Therefore, skirts are a good idea but stay away from miniskirts or anything that ends above the knees.

If you do choose to wear shorts, it is very important that the cloth falls below the ball of the knees. In recent years we have seen visitors bringing zip on pants which can easily be attached when entering holy places within the Vatican.

If you arrive to the Vatican without the appropriate clothing not to worry as the many local vendors surrounding the Vatican walls do sell shawls, t-shirts and even light-weight painters pants to help you cover up before entering.

Shoes for Vatican City Tours

Shoe types are not explicitly mentioned in the Vatican dress code however you do need shoes to enter the Vatican. Open toed shoes or sandals are allowed but we stress that your footwear should be comfortable as you will be on your feet the majority of the time when visiting the Vatican. Due to lack of support we suggest staying away from flip-flops and heels. Don’t try to be fashionable, leave your stilettos at the hotel and wear sneakers, your feet will thank you for it at the end of the day. Flat shoes are highly recommended for tours of the Vatican .

Tips and Suggestions

  • When visiting the Holy See, if possible, do not bring your suitcases, luggage, medium and large backpacks or any other large containers with you to the Vatican. On account of their sheer size, the Vatican staff will not allow these items inside the exhibition spaces. The same is applicable for large tripods, non-collapsible umbrellas, laptops, glass bottles and containers as well as pocket knives. If you have any of these items with you, you will be asked to check your belongings into the Vatican clock room and baggage deposit. The deposit is safe and free of charge however we suggest avoiding this process when possible as you will have to return to the entrance of the Vatican Museums to collect your items at the end of your visit. If you are to join a tour of the Vatican then the tour will finish at St. Peter’s Basilica which is roughly a 25-30min walk from the entrance of the Vatican Museums and baggage deposit.
  • Small backpacks and purses are allowed in the Vatican however we suggest that you put only essentials in the bag. For example, a bottle of water, camera, a light scarf, cardigan or wind breaker. They may come in handy inside the vast Vatican hallways.
  • Bottled water is highly recommended when visiting the Vatican as there are limited places to buy water or find drinking fountains. As long as your bottled container is not made from glass, and has a resealable lid, you are able to bring it with you when visiting the Vatican.

Vatican Tours

Tips and Suggestions when visiting the Vatican with children.

  • Snacks in the Vatican . When visiting the Vatican you will be on your feet the majority of the time so you may need to refuel your body with food and sugars, especially if you have children and are touring the Vatican with your family. The Vatican does have a small cafe bar towards the end of the Vatican Museums which offers sandwiches, snacks (cookies, granola bars, etc.) as well as water, coffee, juice, sodas, even beer and wine. If you are travelling on a budget, or just like to be prepared then it is possible to bring your own snacks into the Vatican. However, the snacks must be sealed in some sort of bag or container  (ziplock or store bought) and can only be eaten within certain areas of the Vatican. Do not sit down in the Sistine Chapel and take out your bag of trail mix, this is highly frowned upon and will most likely result in expulsion. Generally, it is allowed to eat or snack in any of the outdoor areas of the Vatican however it is important to be respectful of your surroundings and to dispose of any packing or left over food appropriately in a nearby trash can.  To be on the safe side, we suggest asking the approval from a Vatican guard or your tour guide before having a snack.
  • Strollers and prams are also permitted in the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel and are highly recommended as it will be the best way for your family to tour the Vatican with young children. Visiting the Vatican can often be exhausting for adults, yet alone children so if you are bringing your stroller to Italy, then bring it with you to the Vatican as well. When entering St. Peter’s Basilica, strollers and prams are not permitted however there is a specially designated area where you can leave your stroller when visiting the Basilica. With all of this said, double and tandem strollers are not allowed as they occupy too much space.

We hope that this article will help you prepare for your time at the Vatican. For more such interesting updates, follow us on Vatican Tours and sign up for the Vatican museum tour today.

Vatican Dress Code | How to Dress for Your Visit to the Vatican?

The Roman Catholic Church is headquartered in Vatican City , a city-state bordered by Rome, Italy. It is the seat of the Pope as well as a treasure trove of iconic art and architecture. The Vatican Museums feature ancient Roman sculptures such as the renowned Laocoön and His Sons, along with Renaissance murals in the Raphael Rooms and the iconic Michelangelo's ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. If you’re planning to visit this magical city, you need to be aware of the Vatican dress code. Here’s a handy guide.

Why Does the Vatican Have A Dress Code?

vatican tour outfit

The Vatican is a self-governing city-state that serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Church. The Vatican has dress regulations throughout the city because it is a religious state.

They advocate modest clothing and skin covering as a religious institution, similar to how other religions have tenets dictating appropriate attire. The guards have the right to refuse you access into the city and its attractions if you do not follow the dress code and are dressed immodestly.

Vatican Dress Code

The Vatican dress code is pretty strict and you’ll have to abide by the following rules during your visit:

Vatican Skip-the-line

General Dress Code

  • Your shoulders should be covered at all times during the visit
  • Clothes that expose your knees, including shorts, skirts, and dresses, are not allowed
  • Any offensive tattoo or religious symbol should not be visible
  • You’ll need to remove any hats or caps
  • Ripped jeans and t-shirts and see-through clothing is also discouraged

Vatican Dress Code

Papal Audience Dress Code

  • Casual but modest attire is acceptable for the Papal Audience; nevertheless, women should still cover their shoulders, especially if the gathering is conducted inside.
  • Because the Audience is normally conducted outside in the summer and Rome is extremely hot, pack caps, sunblock, water, and as much clothing as possible to avoid sunburn.
  • Hats are allowed to be worn by men throughout the audience.

Vatican Dress Code

Dress Code for Men

  • While shirts are preferred, you can go with a T-shirt as long as it doesn’t feature any offensive slogans or imagery
  • Since shoulders shouldn’t be exposed, vests are not allowed
  • If it’s too hot and you would like to wear shorts, ensure they are level with your knees

Vatican Dress Code, Women

Dress Code for Women

  • It is not permitted to wear sleeveless or low-cut clothing. Belly crop tops are a big no!
  • Make sure your shoulders are covered.
  • If you're wearing a skirt, dress, or pair of shorts, make sure they're at least knee-length.

Vatican Dress Code

Dress Code for Kids

  • While there’s no specific Vatican dress code for kids, the same rules as adults apply to them.
  • Shorts shouldn’t be too short and shoulders must not be visible.

What Can You Wear at the Vatican

  • Shoulder-covering blouses or shirts : When visiting Vatican City, avoid spaghetti straps and be sure to wear a shirt with sleeves. Although formal attire is not required, men should prefer to wear a linen shirt. If you're a woman wearing a dress or top with thin straps, you have two options: pack a scarf to drape across your shoulders or keep a cardigan on you.
  • Trousers or mid-length skirts: While it's inconvenient to be barred from wearing shorts in the summer heat, the Vatican is committed to keeping knees covered. Wearing a mid-length skirt or a knee-length dress is the ideal solution. This length of the skirt is also perfect for taking public transportation. Longer shorts can be worn by men on occasion, but trousers or jeans are usually a better choice. In the summer, when the museums are hot and busy, choose light cotton trousers.
  • Flat shoes: It is not expressly forbidden, but it is not recommended to visit the Vatican in flip-flops or casual sandals. Dress as if you're going to church! The Vatican Museums are enormous, with each hall stretching for eight miles. You'll be walking a lot, so take that in mind while planning your outfit.

What You Cannot Wear at the Vatican

  • Sleeveless or low-cut tops: As a religious state, the Vatican is quite strict about the dress code that visitors should follow. Both men and women need to cover their knees and upper arms. Visitors are prohibited from wearing sleeveless tops, and low-cut shirts.
  • Shorts or bottoms that end above the knee: Women, If you are wearing a skirt, dress, or pair of shorts then make sure they end below the knee at least. Men can wear shorts, as long as they level at the knee.
  • Offensive tattoos: Tattoos are allowed. However, the Vatican dress code does not allow entry to those who have tattoos that may be considered offensive to Catholic morality, the Catholic religion, or to common decency. This applies to jewelry, symbols, and slogans on your clothing, as well.
  • Hats: You will be expected to remove your hat before entering the Vatican Museums. Wearing a hat indoors is deemed to be bad manners.

What To Do If You Aren’t Dressed According to the Guidelines?

If you're wearing short shorts and a tank top to the Vatican, don't worry! You don't have to give up and go home.

You can buy a poncho or robe to wear around that covers your shoulders and knees. These ponchos and robes are easily available in different parts of the city.

What to Wear to the Vatican (Vatican Dress Code, Outfit Guide & Suggestions)

If you’re wondering what to wear to the Vatican then don’t worry because I have you covered (literally! ha). This is a pretty common Rome question and is one I recently had myself before visiting the Eternal City. After all, no one wants to be rejected from visiting one of the greatest sites in Europe just because of what they’re wearing!

What to Wear to the Vatican (Vatican Dress Code Outfit Guide & Suggestions)

if you’re planning to visit the Vatican during your time in Rome and want to see the Vatican Museums (which encompass the Sistine Chapel), then one of the most important things to note is that the tickets to visit the museums often sell out at least several days in advance.

Therefore, opt to book your Vatican: Museums & Sistine Chapel Entrance Ticket in advance to avoid disappointment. Check prices and availability here.

Does Vatican City have a dress code?

Dressing for the vatican for women, dressing for the vatican for men, dressing for the vatican for children, what shoes should you wear to visit the vatican, what if you’re dressed inappropriately to visit the vatican, are bags allowed in the vatican.

Vatican City is the smallest city state in the world , and while you’ll be able to wander the square directly in front of St Peter’s Basilica at your own leisure, entering any of the complex itself is entirely up to the guards on duty.

The Vatican is considered to be one of the most holy places in Roman Catholicism and so it’s expected that visitors will dress modestly, just like with many other religious sites around the world. As a general rule of thumb, knees and shoulders should be covered at all times.

In addition to this, you’ll want to avoid ripped/ distressed clothing that shows the aforementioned areas of the body, as well as tattoos, jewellery, and other clothing that could be considered offensive or disrespectful.

Caps/ hats, etc must be removed when entering inside the buildings. To cut a long story short, the Vatican guards have the right to refuse anyone they think is dressed inappropriately and so you want to try and avoid this situation as best you can!

The basics for dressing for the Vatican are pretty simple: your shoulders and knees must be covered, as should your tummy (so if you wear a crop top make sure to bring a sweater to wear over it or alternatively wear high enough skirt/ trousers that your midriff is not exposed).

To be on the safe side, I would probably opt to stay away from dresses and skirts with slits in them. You should also note that low cut tops showing cleavage are a no-no but if you are wearing one then you can bring a scarf/ pashmina to cover your chest area during your visit (which is usually what I do while it’s warm in the sumer).

If you’re wearing a skirt, you’ll want to make sure it covers your knees, and the same goes for trousers. I personally wore a lightweight linen maxi dress to visit and covered my shoulders by using a t-shirt I had in my backpack. If you’re wearing a sleeveless dress in Italy, I recommend always bringing along a T-shirt so that you can enter religious buildings as you’re exploring!

maxi dress

The dress code for men is pretty similar to that of women, in that you shouldn’t have your shoulders or knees exposed. To be on the safe side, my husband opted to wear long trousers that day and paired it with a regular plain white T-shirt.

You can also opt to wear a shirt or polo shirt if you would prefer to dress more formally. While on the subject of trousers, while plain jeans and trousers are acceptable, tracksuits are generally frowned upon and so should be avoided.

There is no specific dress code for dressing for the Vatican for children, though they are typically expected to follow the same rules as adults. Just make sure that shorts/ skirts aren’t too short and that their shoulders are not visible.

There are no specific rules but it’s frowned upon to wear flip flops in the Vatican and you may be refused entry. You’ll want to avoid heels because the cobblestones of Italy can be pretty difficult to navigate, and besides you should be prepared to walk a fair amount when exploring Vatican City.

I personally opt to wear some smart white trainers/ sneakers when out and about exploring Italy. Sometimes I’ll wear smart sandals, but only on the days where I won’t be walking too much.

Not only do smart sneakers pair together with the majority of my summer dresses, but I can easily clock up over 30,000 steps when exploring the streets of Rome and so they’re comfortable too!

If you are wearing short shorts, a mini skirt, spaghetti straps etc, then fear not as all is not lost. On site, it’s possible to buy a poncho to cover up in order to visit the Vatican.

You may look a little silly and it’s not the most comfortable attire, but at least you’ll get to visit one of the best attractions that Italy has to offer!

Small backpacks and handbags are allowed inside the Vatican. However, larger backpacks and suitcases are not allowed due to security issues/ the risk of damaging artwork.

Therefore you should arrange ahead of time to store your bags somewhere safely such as at your accommodation or using a dedicated service (I personally use Luggage Hero). Another option is to use the cloakroom at the Vatican Museums which are free of charge but are pretty far away from the exit of the museums.

What to Wear When Visiting the Vatican

Gallery of Statues at the Vatican Museums in Rome

After 88 days of closure due to Covid restrictions, the Vatican Museums in Rome reopened on February 1.

While travel restrictions are still in place, it is not too soon to start planning and getting ready for your next Italian trip. If that includes the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican, keep in mind these dress code recommendations. You may be turned away if your attire is deemed inappropriate.

As a general rule, remember that your shoulders and knees should always be covered. The Vatican Museums website states the following: “Entry to the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Gardens is permitted only to appropriately dressed visitors.”

What does “appropriately dressed visitors” mean? It means that you will likely be denied entry if you’re wearing:

A miniskirt

Shorts above the knee

Sleeveless tops and any cleavage-revealing garments

Because many tourists visit in summer, when temperatures in Rome can reach 38°C, most walk around in shorts and sleeveless shirts or short dresses. If you want to avoid having to buy a scarf or shawl from the street vendors stationed outside San Pietro, consider that it will be wiser to wear long pants in light fabric like linen or cotton, or a long dress that covers the legs. If you opt for shorts, they should fall under your knees, Jeans are ok too, but keep those ripped jeans for another occasion.

While there is no written rule for shoes, err on the side of caution. Avoid flip flops or beach sandals and wear comfortable shoes because you’ll be doing a lot of walking; the Vatican Museums are huge, plus you may decide to climb the 551 steps that lead to the dome of St. Peter's Basilica!

Also keep in mind that hats are forbidden inside the museums and the basilica. If you wear one outside to protect you from the heat of summer, use one that you can easily place in your bag or backpack before accessing the sites.

Vatican Dress Code, Tourists Inside

  • March 17, 2021 2:49 am

Let’s face it, the dress code in America, in general, is quite casual. From athleisure to sweatpants, you can get away with wearing almost anything, even high-heeled Crocs. But when you visit Rome, Italy, and Vatican City, the fashion standards change significantly.

Italians take great pride in their fashion – it is called  Bella figura  in Italian. Elevate your wardrobe if you’re eager to fit in while wandering around Rome and Vatican City. But the Vatican City dress code is even more particular. Surprised? You probably shouldn’t be, but most people are shocked to discover what you can and can’t wear in this holy part of Italy.

Why is there a Dress Code in Vatican City?

Vatican Dress Code Sign

The Vatican is a fascinating independent city-state and the heart of the Roman Catholic Church. It’s the Pope’s home base when he’s not traveling, and as a religious state known as the Holy See, it has its general dress code.

Like many other religious institutions, Vatican City’s Vatican encourages modest attire and skin covering. Remember, if you don’t follow the dress code for the Vatican, the guards have the authority to deny you entry to the city and its attractions.

But don’t worry if you find yourself unprepared or without appropriate clothing in Rome. You can conveniently purchase plastic cloaks or shawls that elegantly wrap around your knees and shoulders, offering a temporary solution to comply with the dress code.

Rules of the Vatican Dress Code

The Vatican is pretty straightforward about what you can and cannot wear. To abide by the rules, your outfit must follow the following restrictions:

What Can You Wear at the Vatican

1. shoulder-covering blouses or t-shirts.

Rule one of the Vatican dress code: your shoulders must be covered. At the Vatican, sleeveless tops are forbidden – this aspect of the Vatican dress code applies to men and women. That’s right, no tube tops, tank tops, or camisoles.

It can be difficult for tourists in the hot summer months. One way to wear a tank top to the Vatican is to bring a light sweater or scarf. You can cover your shoulders with a shawl while touring Vatican Museums, St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and other religious sites in Vatican City.

2. Trousers or mid-length/long skirts

When it’s scorching hot outside, it can be inconvenient to be prohibited from wearing shorts in the Vatican. But, they have a steadfast rule of keeping at least knee length.

The best option is to wear a long skirt or dress that falls around the knees. This length helps you stay cool and makes it easier to use public transportation.

Men can occasionally wear longer shorts, but wearing pants like jeans or trousers is generally recommended as appropriate attire. Opt for lightweight linen trousers to stay comfortable during the sweltering summer months when the Vatican museums are crowded.

What You Cannot Wear at the Vatican

Dress code sign on wall

The Vatican is a religious institution, and hats are not allowed inside unless for religious reasons . Women can wear headscarves inside.

The no-hat rule is not unique to the Roman Catholic church. Other religions also apply this rule, such as in synagogues and other religious institutions.

2. Low-cut shirts and crop tops

The Vatican dress code prohibits low-cut or revealing shirts for women. But men have also been denied if their t-shirt goes too low. This is due in part to Catholic morality. In general, it is best to wear modest clothing to Vatican City.

There is no specific rule to belly crop tops, but it is bad manners to reveal too much skin. Bring a cover-up if you choose to wear a low-cut shirt or crop top. In the summer in Rome, it can get quite hot. Bring a lightweight shirt or cover-up to the Basilica to avoid bare shoulders and unwanted attention during your visit.

3. Shorts or skirts

The Vatican dress code requires knee-length skirts , dresses, trousers, and shorts. Wearing shorts, in general, is looked down upon but not against the rules. Short shorts, however, are forbidden.

If you want to wear shorts during the hot summer in Rome, ensure they are not short and adequately cover you. It is best to dress in more modest attire.

4. Offensive slogans or images

When visiting Vatican City, the best dress code advice is to be respectful. Offensive slogans and images are not welcome. While it is not an official rule, it is common decency. If you are wearing a slogan or image that is offensive enough, you may be asked to leave the Vatican.

5. Wearing flip-flops

Avoiding flip-flops and open-foot flats is best when visiting the Vatican because they don’t meet the dress code standards. The Vatican values modest attire, including proper footwear. Flip-flops and open-foot flats are seen as too casual and informal for the sacred atmosphere of this holy site.

To honor the Vatican’s traditions and show respect, it’s recommended to choose closed-toe shoes that are more formal when you visit. Tennis shoes , closed-toe shoes, and boots are always allowed.

Is The Vatican Dress Code Enforced?

St. Peter's Basilica in the evening

YES. The Vatican dress code is strictly enforced. Do not try to bypass it! Many tourists are refused entry or ejected from the Vatican daily simply because they didn’t try to abide by the dress code. But the dress code itself isn’t too strict. So, while the enforcement is pretty tough, what you can wear is flexible.

What Happens If You Break The Vatican’s Dress Code?

It all depends on the situation. In most cases, a guard will ask you why you are dressed as you are. Sometimes, they may let you pass. But, the most common reaction is that you will be politely asked to leave.

If you violate the dress code, the most crucial thing to remember is that you are not permanently banned from the Vatican. You can return to your hotel, dress better, and return. If it’s a matter of showing skin, you can also buy a scarf and wrap it around you to get entry to the venue.

So there you have it, the practical guide to the code for the Vatican. No matter your religious beliefs, one thing is certain: respect is key when visiting this revered destination.

As you step onto the sacred ground of the Vatican, remember to honor its traditions by embracing the dress code. It’s a small gesture that goes a long way in paying homage to the sanctity of this remarkable place. After all, showing respect is not only expected but also an essential part of the experience.

Can You Wear Jeans To The Vatican?

Yes, you can wear jeans. No bans are made on the material that you wear.

Can You Wear Shorts To The Vatican?

Can You Wear Flip-Flops To The Vatican?

No, flip-flops are considered to be too casual for the Vatican. If you want to keep your feet cool, wear proper sandals or formal shoes. Similarly, excessively dirty sneakers can also get you turned away.

Can You Bring A Backpack Or A Bag To The Vatican?

Due to the crowds that certain attractions draw, many areas of the Vatican say that no backpacks are allowed and people must bring backpacks and large bags to check them upon entry. Small bags and wallets are allowed. The Vatican understands that you may need to tote some stuff occasionally.

Do children have to follow the Vatican dress code?

Yes, children are not exempt from the guidelines. While the dress code for kids may be more lenient, it’s still advisable to dress them appropriately and respectfully. Shorts shouldn’t be too short, and shoulders must not be visible.

Is there a dress code for attending a Papal Audience?

Yes, there is a dress code for attending a Papal Audience. Both men and women are expected to cover their shoulders and avoid wearing shorts, sleeveless tops, or revealing clothing. Additionally, hats or head coverings should be removed upon entering the audience area.

Are there any exceptions to the Vatican dress code?

The Vatican dress code is generally strict and applies to all visitors. But, there may be some minor exceptions for specific circumstances, such as religious reasons, disability, or in certain designated areas. It’s always recommended to adhere to the dress code as closely as possible to show respect for the sacredness of the Vatican.

What to wear to The Vatican: Dress Code rules [2024] you should know

Apr 22, 2023

View of Vatican City from Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, Italy.

When visiting the Vatican, it’s important to remember to show respect. Even if you are not Catholic, and even if you are not Christian, you are in a holy place and it’s important to follow the few amount of rules they have in the Vatican dress code. The Vatican’s dress code means women and men both need to cover their knees, either with a long dress or pants, as well as covering their arms.

The main thing to remember about visiting The Vatican, or any church or holy building in general, is to be respectful of their rules. It can get hot in Rome in the summer, so be prepared to plan ahead — or you may be denied entry to The Vatican. Here are our top tips for The Vatican dress code.

Can You Wear Leggings to the Vatican? Can You Wear Hats to the Vatican? Can You Wear Shorts to the Vatican? What to Wear to the Vatican

Can you Wear Leggings to the Vatican?

There is mixed opinion on whether leggings or  tights count as pants according to the dress code for Vatican City. I have heard first-hand of many people have been turned away for wearing leggings to The Vatican, so you probably don’t want to take the chance — although there is no official rule that it is not accepted. When I went, I wore tight black pants (made of legging material) under a dress and I didn’t even get a second look. It may depend on who is letting you in, but it will be a hassle if you are wearing the wrong thing, so plan accordingly.

Learn more about Visiting The Vatican: Everything you need to know — including skip-the-line tickets, the Vatican Museums, and how to climb to the top of St. Peter’s Basilica

During the winter, wearing your normal clothing should be fine. Although I was always taught to wear a dress to a church, the dress code at the Vatican locations seems to be slightly more laid back — in certain ways. So if you are a female, feel free to wear pants. And if you are male, make sure you wear pants and you should be fine.

Rome, Italy can get incredibly hot during the summer, so if you are planning to wear a shorter dress or shorts, throwing some pants in your bag will be necessary if you want to be let into any of the Vatican buildings.

Can You Wear Hats to the Vatican?

When visiting The Vatican, you will also be visiting St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the most famous churches in the world. As a male, remember to take off any hat while visiting churches, not just at the Vatican but at any church you visit.

Climb to the top of St. Peter’s Basilica Dome

Females are allowed to keep their hats on as part of the dress code for Vatican City. This is true for many Christian churches, which is similar to the hat rules for The Vatican.

Can You Wear Shorts to the Vatican?

Shorts are not allowed as a part of the Vatican dress code rules. Whether you are female or male, you will want to cover your legs.

If you show up with your legs revealed, you will either be turned away or asked to purchase a scarf or something similar from the gift shop to cover yourself.

Taking the Vatican Scavi tour: Everything you need to know about visiting St. Peter’s tomb

Wearing shorts around Rome in general makes you stand out as a tourist, so it may be best not to pack them. But if you want to wear them around the city of Rome, make sure you do not wear them on the day you will be visiting Vatican City. The Vatican dress code is pretty clear on not allowing shorts, or revealed legs at all.

What to Wear to The Vatican

It can be a little scary to stand in a long line if you are not sure if they are even going to let you in. So our tip is just to wear what they ask in the rules for the Vatican. It is not that difficult and can alleviate some hassles at one of the most amazing and beautiful places you will ever visit.

Do not reveal your legs and dress modest during your visit, and you will be fine when you are visiting Vatican City.

History of Vatican Dress Code

The Vatican City dress code mirrors that of a general dress code for Roman Catholic churches that has existed for centuries. Since the 1970s, the application of a dress code – particularly for women – has relaxed in most instances.

But for the Vatican City, the basic guidelines – centred on modesty for both men and women – have prevailed.

Today’s dress code for the Vatican in Rome Italy

Dress code in Vatican City

You might be disappointed to queue for hours and hours to get into some of the Vatican City attractions, and then turned away. Unfortunately, we have seen this happening on occasion, especially in the height of summer.

Stick to these general rules and you won’t run the risk of ruining your trip:

  • Bare knees – for both men and women – are a no-no
  • Same goes for bare shoulders
  • Hats or caps will need to be removed
  • Belly crop tops – no way!

On top of these rules, which are enforced by Vatican staff on entry to the buildings, you may want to do the following:

  • Avoid wearing slogans that could offend, pictures of skulls for example, or anti-religious attire
  • Flip flops are perhaps too casual for the surroundings
  • Ripped T-Shirts or Jeans
  • See-through clothing

The above, whilst not strictly prohibited, might cause offence. Depending on the guard enforcing the Vatican dress code on the day, you might be refused entry.

Vatican city dress code women for all occasions.

The Vatican city applies its rules for modesty equally to men and women. But there are some particular instances when women have additional dress code requirements. One would be if you are meeting the Pope! If you look at pictures of Queen Elizabeth II meeting the Pope through the ages, you’d be forgiven for thinking she was at a funeral. Why was she always dressed in black?

Black dress when meeting the Pope is a sign of modesty and piety. This is adhered to by non-catholic Monarchs, princesses and the like. But don’t be surprised if you see a female member of a European Royal Family meeting the Pope dressed in white either! There exists an interesting protocol – known as the Privilege du Blanc (privilege of white) – whereby certain catholic royals are allowed to wear white.

Stylish & Casual mens dress code for Vatican

Traditional Vatican City dress code

In the hot summer months, it can be tough in Rome. The dress code for the Vatican City can make it even more difficult. For ladies at least, a long light summer dress will bring some comfort. But for men, it can be particularly tough if they can’t wear shorts.

You could pack a light pair of linen trousers in a bag and put them on before entering, so that you can wear shorts the rest of the day. T-Shirts are fine, but a nice white linen shirt may be better and look more respectful.

Vatican dress code for kids – Best ideas

There is no real dress code for kids, but you’d perhaps want to protect them from hot sun in summer with covered arms anyway. A nice pair of shorts and t-shirt for boys, and a summer dress for girls would do in the summer. In the winter, make sure they have something warm. St Peter’s Basilica can be particularly cool in the winter.

Vatican city dress code summer rules

The Vatican dress code applies in summer as well as winter. It is just more difficult to adhere to in the summer months! There are rumours that the guards are a bit more lenient on the really hot days. But you cannot take this for granted, so make sure you have the appropriate cover ups with you so as not to miss out on entry.

More about Vatican dress code shoes requirements

There is no specific rule about footwear in the Vatican city. However, we would recommend you don’t wear flip flops. They can be seen as a bit too casual for visiting the Basilica for example.

In addition, if you want to climb to the top of the Basilica, or walk later on some ancient ruins down at the Roman Forum, you’ll need something that is less of a trip hazard.

Showing tattoos – What are the rules?

Tattoo rules

In theory, there are no specific rules against tattoos. However, the code is that anything deemed offensive to the Catholic Church could lead you to being escorted out. So best to cover anything you think may offend.

What about shorts, sandals & hats

As we mentioned above, shorts are not appropriate clothing for the Vatican City. That is, those that finish on or above the knee. You might think that a pair of “boardies” or surf shorts would fit the brief, but these would be too casual for the holy surroundings of the Vatican City. Stick if you must to ¾ length options.

  • Sandals – the more formal kind (not plastic flip flops ) can be acceptable, but might not be comfortable for all day exploring in the miles of museum halls. Generally, there are no footwear rules on items that would violate the dress code for Vatican City
  • Hats – hats are OK, and recommended in summer and winter. But men will need to remove them on entry to the internal attractions including St Peter’s Basilica. Women can keep wearing theirs.

What to wear to avoid looking like a tourist?

What to wear to adapt

If you aren’t wearing flip flops, short, belly tops, cut off shirts and bright neon, you probably are about half way there! If you want to dress like an Italian, think understated tailoring, lay off the denim and stick to neutral colours.

Dress Code for the Sistine Chapel

The Sistine Chapel is one of the areas in the Vatican that requires the visitors to follow the dress code. No bare flesh on shoulders or above the know, and no generally offensive clothing.

Dress Code for St Peter’s Basilica

Access too to St Peter’s Basilica is also controlled. You will need to follow the dress code rules above to enter.

A note on the enforcement of the dress code

The above rules are the rules! But we do get reports that the people enforcing the dress code can be strict or less strict with them. I guess it is really hard to control by eye, and it is sort of subjective .

So don’t be surprised if you get pulled for something, but see someone else getting away with it. That’s just something that happens sometimes. Best for you just to come prepared to follow the rules so you can enjoy without worry.

It's All About Italy

The Vatican

How to Dress to Visit the Vatican

It’s no mystery that Italy is a very fashion-conscious country. In a previous article we gave you advice on how to dress appropriately when visiting Italy during summer, but this time we want to be more specific about choosing the perfect attire for the Vatican.

When visiting the Vatican, you have to think of it like a very exclusive club : to be sure to get in, you need to be dressed right! Find out the most appropriate dress code for this special location and you will not be turned away at the entrance.

The Vatican

The appropriate dress code for visiting the Vatican

The Vatican is a world famous historical and religious complex in the heart of Rome, including the Vatican Museums, The Sistine Chapel, the Vatican Gardens and St. Peter’s Basilica . It holds extreme significance for the global Christian community and is visited by millions of tourists and pilgrims each year, the majority of them choosing summertime to travel. However, during the warm summer months many of them are turned away at the entrance because their dress code does not comply with the rigorous Vatican regulations in terms of appropriate clothing.

Let’s not shy away from it: summer in Italy can be blazing hot, and if you’re going to Rome in June, July or August you’d probably do anything to stay cool. Dressing properly to visit sacred sites can be challenging under these circumstances, but there is a way to keep cool and also be granted access to some of Italy’s most famous and enchanting attractions.

So how do you dress to impress at the Vatican?

Here are  8  tips for both men and women when visiting the Vatican – and still manage to survive the heat! Before we start, bear in mind this rule of thumb: when visiting any Christian site in general, (and the Vatican in particular!) showing off too much of your arms, cleavage, back and legs skin can be considered disrespectful . You may find churches in Italy that have a more relaxed attitude to summer attire, but we don’t recommend that you take chances – especially if you have been waiting a long time in line to get in, it could be very disappointing to be refused access!

Here is what you should and should not wear when visiting the Vatican:

  • Avoid any top that is sleeveless : a blouse, a short-sleeved shirt or T-shirt will do just fine;
  • Avoid graphics, slogans or patterns on your clothes that may be unsuitable or offensive to the spirit of the sacred place you’re touring;
  • Sheer fabrics and transparencies that are too revealing are not ideal;
  • Cropped tops showing off your belly are definitely a bad outfit choice;
  • Wear trousers, jeans, dresses or skirts that are knee-length . Alternatively, consider taking with you leggings, tights or a scarf to wrap around your waist to cover up your legs;
  • Wear shoes! Sandals are fine, but flip flops are considered too relaxed as footwear to enter the Vatican;
  • If you’re wearing a hat or a cap, you’ll have to remove it once you’re inside the building;
  • Basilicas and museums can be chilly even in summer: bring a scarf or a pashmina with you . Not only it’ll be useful if worn around bare shoulders or legs, but you’ll avoid unpleasant temperature changes when going inside the buildings.

Have you been to the Vatican already? If so, tell us what you wore and share your tips with other readers!

Vatican Dress Code: A What to Wear Guide

If you are heading to Rome chances are that visiting the Vatican is on your Rome Bucket List and you really can dedicate a whole day in your Rome itinerary to exploring the Vatican Museums, St Peters Basilica and the surrounding area. But is there a Vatican Dress Code? In this post we will guide you through what to wear to the Vatican and more importantly what not to wear!

Table of Contents

Vatican Dress Code: What NOT To Wear to the Vatican

Vatican Dress Code: What to Wear to the Vatican for Women, Men and Children

There is a strict dress code for visiting the Vatican which includes if you are visiting the Vatican Museums and St Peters Basilica.

The Vatican Dress Code means that you can’t wear:

  • Sleeveless tops, shirts and blouses
  • Low Cut and Revealing Tops
  • Shorts
  • Hats  – these are fine for the queue but you will be asked to remove them when entering the buildings.

This Vatican Dress Code is applicable to both men and women so do be sure to dress appropriately whatever part of the Vatican you are heading to otherwise you will not be granted entry even with Skip the Line Tickets.

Top Tip : We recommend buying your tickets online in advance (skip the line type) as the queues for the Vatican can get very very long especially if you are visiting Rome in the summer or even on a rainy day in Rome . Click here to buy your tickets online in advance .

Although not explicitly stated anywhere it is respectful and prudent to also avoid wearing t-shirts with graphics or slogans that would be offensive to the holy place you are in.

What to Wear in to the Vatican

What to Wear to the Vatican - Vatican Dress Code

So now you know what not to wear to the Vatican now we turn our attention to what to wear. As I mentioned above the Vatican dress code applies to both men and women but for our what to wear I have split those down into categories for men, women and children visiting the Vatican .

Vatican dress code for women

As your arms, chest and knees need to be covered one of the best things to wear that adheres to the Vatican Dress code for women is a chino and blouse combination. I recommend choosing light weight (But not see through) fabric for both of these items especially if you are visiting the Vatican in the summer time.

vatican tour outfit

Another of my favourite wardrobe go to pieces when I am travelling to Italy and the Vatican in particular is a long sleeved maxi dress or a maxi skirt paired with a long sleeved top.. Just be sure to make sure any skirt you have does not have a large split that could reveal your knee.

vatican tour outfit

If you opt for a maxi dress or top that has a strappy sleeve then you are required to cover up so remember to pack a cardigan or a pashmina to go over the top. I always try and wear long sleeves rather than scrappy top personally because I always worry that I will forget my pashmina or scarf at last minute.

vatican tour outfit

A good general tip for visiting Rome especially if you are going into to churches however is to always leave a pashmina in your bag that way you always have an option of an extra covering if required. They are also really handy as even in summer it is surprising how cool the St Peters Basilica can be.

Vatican dress code for men

Both my husband and I are jeans and t shirt people especially when we are travelling but for some reason whenever we go to the Vatican we always seems to dress up a bit more. I don’t know why it’s not that jeans are not allowed but as always in Italy you are surrounded by well dressed people so we usually opt for something slightly fancier ourselves.

vatican tour outfit

When my husband visits the Vatican he too tends to opt for Chinos and a smart button down shirt that has the option of rolling up the sleeves.

What to wear in the Vatican for kids

The Vatican Museum Website is not explicit about its dress code requirements for children. Last time we visited the Vatican with our little one it was in Winter so we had no concerns about adhering to the dress code. I personally always dress my little one to the adult dress code whenever we visiting religious sites.

For more information on visiting the Vatican with kids check out this post.

What Shoes Should you Wear to the Vatican City

One of the most frequently asked questions I see about visiting the Vatican City is in relation to footwear.

Can you wear flip flops in the Vatican?

In answer to “Can you wear flip flops in the Vatican” and the answer is unclear. It is meant to be too informal to wear flip flops to the Vatican although I haven’t seen this specifically stated by the vatican website as this tends to only deal with clothing clothing. However I would strongly advise against wearing flip flops anyway as there is a LOT of walking involved if you are visiting the Vatican Museums, Basilica and Gardens and flip flops are just not good for the amount of walking you all be doing.

I would advise you wear sandals with good arch support and that are very comfy or a trainer or walking shoe. Whenever I am in Rome and especially at the Vatican I always carry plasters with me in case my shoes rub with all the walking especially if your feet are prone to swell in the summer heat.

What to wear to the Vatican in Summer

Vatican Dress Code: What to Wear to the Vatican for Women, Men and Children

I have been lucky enough to visit Rome in Winte r and summer and I can definitely say that I found it easier to stick to the Vatican dress code in the Winter as you need your layers in Rome in Winter. In summer on the other hand, especially if you are visiting Rome in August it can get unbearably hot. All you want to wear in Rome in the summer is shorts and a strappy top but this does not adhere to the Vatican Dress code.

If you are visiting and wondering what to wear to the Vatican in the summer I advise sticking to loose clothing that are made of breathable fabrics. Stick to cottons and linens for your clothes and be sure to avoid all man made fabrics that make you sweat.

Dresses and skirts are another good option so long as your knees and shoulders are covered. Be sure that any dress or skirt does not have a slit that reveals the knee or above.

And although the weather in Rome in summer is very hot the Basilica of St Peter can actually can be quite cool even in the summer so be sure to pack a pashmina or cardigan as you may get chilly in there.

Other FAQs about what to Wear Visiting the Vatican

Visiting Rome in the Winter Itinerary - Best Things to do in Rome in Winter

Can you wear ripped jeans to Vatican?

The answer to this is that it really depends on the rips. If there are rips that expose your knees or your thighs then these are a big no no. To be on the safe side I would avoid ripped jeans.

Can you wear skinny jeans to the Vatican?

Again the answer to can you wear skinny jeans to the Vatican is a grey area. There is nothing specific in the Vatican Dress Code that prohibits skinny jeans but I always try to err on the more conservative side when visiting religious sites anywhere in the world.

Do you have to wear pants to the Vatican?

You do not have to wear pants to the Vatican (I mean pants in the American sense of the word! You definitely should be wearing underwear to the Vatican). So long as your knees and above are completely covered you can wear a dress or skirt instead of pants. If you do opt for a dress or skirt however be sure there are no slits that are revealing of your leg.

How strict is the dress code at the Vatican?

The answer is strict. The Vatican Dress code is strictly enforced. But if you forget something there are lots of shops around where you can buy shawls and ponchos. It wis harder to find things to cover your legs than shoulders in this area though so I would be sure to check your outfit before you leave for the Vatican to make sure it adheres to all the Vatican Clothing rules.

Do your knees need to be covered at the Vatican?

Ues your needs need to be covered at the Vatican at all times. Be aware any slits in skirts or dreseses or on ripped jeans which may accidentally break the Vatican dress code rules as you will be turned away.

Do you have to cover your head in the Vatican?

There seems to be a lot of confusion over whether you have to cover your heard in the Vatican but for the regular visitor the answer is definitely no. In fact if you are wearing a hat you will have to remove these to enter any of the Vatican Buildings.

A practical guide on how to dress for the Vatican

A practical guide on how to dress when visiting the vatican museums and st. peter’s basilica., what are the rules, be prepared  , dress code for the vatican  .

For women, I recommend keeping a shawl and a pair of leggings in your purse if you are visiting in warm months. Quickly pull the leggings on under a dress and throw the shawl over your arms. In the winter, one of those lightweight jackets that can roll up into a satisfyingly small bundle to place in your backpack, will make it easier to move around the crowded corridors of the museums. Men should wear comfortable pants and shirts that cover their shoulders to be sure that they are admitted to one of the most beautiful sites in Rome.

Here are some answers to some of the most frequently askes questions:

1. are t-shirts, turtlenecks, and tank tops allowed, 2. what to wear while at the vatican during the summer.

Take care of what goes into your suitcase. For instance, lightweight trousers made from linen or cotton are perfect and meet the Vatican dress code standards.

The all-weather all-environment jeans work too, but you might want to take precautions when it comes to wearing shirts and shorts. A skirt can do fine but a mini skirt is an absolute no-no. If you had to make an impromptu visit to the Vatican but lack the right attire, purchase a pair of cheap trousers or a skirt .

3. What should I wear on my feet when heading to the Vatican?

If it were up to me, I would recommend something flat, and silent. During summer, sandals and flats are acceptable rather than flip flops.

4. What about wearing a hat?

5. what men should observe about the vatican dress code.

What to Wear to the Vatican

A dress code to honor when you visit the vatican.

What to Wear to the Vatican

Visiting the Vatican takes some planning to ensure you enjoy the whole experience. Along with more typical sightseeing considerations, there's the matter of a dress code. The four main public attractions in Vatican City – St. Peter's Basilica , the Vatican Museums , the Vatican Garden and the Sistine Chapel – all require appropriate dress for entry. The same goes for attending a Wednesday morning audience with the Pope in St. Peter's Square. It's not a complicated or demanding dress code, but it's strictly enforced. Familiarize yourself with the rules so you're not turned away at, well, the pearly gates.

  • How to Dress in New York

What not to wear

The Vatican's dress code is most easily defined by the don'ts. Just show respectful, slightly conservative modesty befitting a Roman Catholic church. Don't reveal shoulders, an eyeful of cleavage, a lot of leg, or the back or belly.

Tank tops, sleeveless shirts and low-cut tops are a no-go. Don't wear tops that are cropped or cut to show the midriff or a big swatch of back skin. Shorts, miniskirts and skirts or dresses that fall above the knee are prohibited. Wearing a hat indoors isn't allowed, and flip-flops are considered too informal.

Use common sense. For example, don't wear anything showing language or graphics that might be perceived as offensive in this environment. The same goes for sheer or see-through clothing on the somewhat revealing side. You'll have come a long way, so don't risk being denied entry for poor judgment; it makes for much less interesting stories and photos, not to mention unpleasant memories.

What to wear

You certainly don't need to get decked out in formal wear to be admitted into Vatican sites. Just follow the rules.

A T-shirt, blouse, or other top that covers shoulders, chest, back and stomach will do, and a dress is fine if it hangs over the knee and isn't cut low in the front or back. Any pants (including jeans), capris, or skirts or dresses of adequate length are fine to wear. Sandals and sneakers are acceptable, too.

Be aware that, when it comes to skirts and dresses, opinions on what “too short” means vary from one Vatican guard to another. If you go with something knee-length, you're leaving your fate to the whims of the person admitting you. Err on the side of below the knee.

Seasonal considerations

When in Rome during a cooler time of year, regular outfits should provide enough coverage to satisfy the dress code in Vatican City. But if it's a summertime visit, you're no doubt packing shorts, sleeveless shirts and other clothes that could squash a visit to the Vatican.

It isn't necessary to be uncomfortably warm, though, during the summer. Breathable, lightweight fabrics work well. Just accessorize to meet the Vatican dress code. A light scarf or pashmina covering shoulders will get you in, even with a sleeveless top. Similarly, adding a sarong, tights or leggings to your bottom half solves the short skirt problem.

It's surprisingly cold, though, inside some Vatican attractions, even in the summer, so you may be thankful for the dress code. Also, if it's cold or rainy out, use the free cloakroom service at the Vatican Museums where you can leave coats, umbrellas and even baggage.

What to wear to audiences

Papal audiences are held on Wednesdays and Sundays whenever the Pope is in the Vatican. The primary exception is late July through August, when he's at his summer retreat in Castel Gandolfo. There's no variation in the dress code for these special occasions.

Because these events are held outdoors, hats are not only permitted, but a good idea in the spring or summer when the brim provides sun protection. Wear sunscreen, too; you're likely to be standing in direct sunlight.

Other considerations

As the most popular tourist attraction in Rome, the Vatican is busy year-round. The lightest crowds tend to be during January, February, November and December. The throngs are thickest from morning to early afternoon – especially on Wednesdays when the Pope hosts audiences. If you go later to avoid the herd, keep in mind that final entry is at 4 p.m.

The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel are closed on Sundays, except for the last Sunday of each month. Admission is free, final entry is at 12:30 p.m. and crowds are especially heavy.

What to Wear to the Vatican

vatican tour outfit

Millions of people visit the Vatican ( St. Peter’s and the Vatican Museums ) every year. And yes, some are turned away because of what they are wearing! Even though it is a major tourist attraction for people of all backgrounds, Vatican City is also a major holy site in the Catholic religion. As such, it is important to think about what to wear to the Vatican (or t0 any church in Italy, for that matter).

Vatican Dress Code

First things first: what are the actual rules about what you can wear to the Vatican? It is actually more about what you CAN’T wear. The following items of clothing are not allowed in the Vatican Museums (including the Sistine Chapel), St. Peter’s Basilica or the Vatican Gardens. If you are visiting it is prohibited to wear:

  • Mini-skirts
  • Shorts above the knee
  • Sleeveless tops
  • Lowcut clothing

The Vatican’s dress code applies to both men and women and essentially comes down to ensuring that your knees and shoulders are covered.

While there is a dress code in terms of what is not allowed, there are no set rules about what TO wear to the Vatican. (Unless you are a female diplomat about to meet the Pope, in which case you wear black. I doubt this applies to too many of us).

If you are visiting St. Peter’s Basilica and/or the Vatican museums, you should dress for comfort while respecting the rules about covering your knees and shoulders.

Blouses or shirt that cover the shoulder

Skip the spaghetti straps and be sure to wear a shirt with sleeves when you are visiting Vatican City. This is more of an issue in the summer than in the winter.

There is no need to dress formally but men may want to opt for a linen shirt  (which is a good choice for traveling to Italy in general).

vatican tour outfit

For women, if you are wearing a dress or top with thin straps, you have two choices: bring a scarf to wrap around your shoulders, or carry a cardigan to wear inside at all times.

vatican tour outfit

It is probably going to be less hassle to simply wear a blouse or a t-shirt with sleeves. Short sleeves are fine, but I would pick a breezy top like this one for comfort (and because Italians tend to dress up a bit and save the t-shirts for the gym).

vatican tour outfit

Mid-length skirts or trousers

It can be annoying to be banned from wearing shorts in the heat of summer, but the Vatican is serious about keeping knees covered. My favorite solution is to wear a mid-length skirt (or a dress that goes to the knee). I find that this length of the skirt is great for braving public transportation as well because then your skin doesn’t actually have to make contact with the bus or metro seats.

vatican tour outfit

There is no need to be frumpy (though the flash of midriff above isn’t going to work – simply pair the skirt with a different top).

vatican tour outfit

Guys can sometimes get by with longer shorts, but trousers or jeans are always a better bet. Pick a lighter cotton like these for summer months when the museums are hot and crowded.

It is not explicitly banned, but I do not recommend wearing flipflops or casual sandals to the Vatican. Again, dress like you are going to church (which you are!)

The Vatican Museums are massive and every hall combined would stretch on for eight miles. You will be walking A LOT, so keep this is mind when you dress for your day.

I like structured flats or Superga sneakers (which are insanely popular here and go with pretty much anything).

Breaking the Vatican Dress Code

If you arrive at the Vatican wearing short shorts and a tank top –  fear not! While you can give up and head home if you like, you can also purchase a plastic poncho/robe to wear around which covers your shoulders and knees. Yes, everyone will look at you but at least you can still go see the Sistine Chapel?

Here are some suggestions on items that you can wear to the Vatican:

Do you have any other suggestions about what to wear to the Vatican?

And do you already have your tickets? If you are planning to visit the Vatican, be sure that you have your tickets purchased in advance to avoid the two-hour-long line.

Hi Good morning Natalie. Many thanks for this information about the dress code to go to the Vatican City. God bless you

' src=

Do the dresses/skirts need to actually cover the knee cap or can they just touch the top of the knee?

' src=

Technically the knee cap but they are more concerned with any thigh showing. Brushing the top of the knee will be fine

' src=

Thanks so much for this information! If, in the winter, a woman wears opaque tights with a skirt or dress, does the hem still need to reach the knee?

Hi Margie! That should be fine (as long as the dress is not overly revealing in other ways). I hope you enjoy your trip to the Vatican!

' src=

Hi, I am travelling with 2 teenagers, one will be happy in jeans but younger son lives in sports wear. If smart is this acceptable , as long as not shorts ? Thank you

Ciao! He honestly should be fine if they are to the knee. If you can convince him to wear a polo, it should be totally acceptable. It is more about wearing something that would fit in inside a church, which is essentially what the museums still are

' src=

Hello, Do you know if a sheer colored (Or see through scarf-chiffon) are acceptable to cover your shoulders with? Thank you!

It should be!

' src=

Hi Natalie, Is it possible to wear a shirt that shows a little bit of your stomach? Or should you go with a shirt that covers everything? Thanks 🙂

Hi Edith – no stomach can be showing so it would be best to go with a shirt that covers everything. Have fun!

' src=

Hey Natalie! Are capri leggings okay to wear or am I better off wearing a longer skirt to the Vatican City?

Ciao! Capri leggings should be fine, but athletic wear is a bit informal, so if the skirt isn’t too much bother (or if you have a nice top with the capris) it might be better 🙂

' src=

Hi Natalie, Would it be okay to wear jeans with minimal holes in the knee? Thanks so much!

Ciao! That should be fine. The main thing is to be covered and dressed respectively for the church.

' src=

Caio! I will be visiting in August. Just to be clear a dress can be worn as long as the him fall below the knee, and the sleeves on the dress. Are long sleeves required or sleeve length similar to a T-shirt length okay? I hear it’s warm in August would a light. sweater over a sleeveless sundress, it has modest straps but no sleeves be acceptable? Lastly, I read your suggestion about the “Superga” sneakers they are so cute. Are those acceptable inside the Vatican etc?

Superga would be fine! A modest sleeve is fine as long as the shoulder is covered. You could use the light sweater only in places like the entrance and the chapel/ st. Peter’s and likely be fine with straps only in other parts of the museum.

' src=

I saw you mentioned not wearing flip flops or casual sandals. I have a pair of supportive Birkenstock sandals with a silver strap that is dressier than the double buckle sandals one usually thinks of regarding Birkenstock. In your opinion, do you think they would be okay to wear with capris? Thank you!

Hi Allison! There is no specific rule about footwear in the Vatican dress code so the suggestion is more about appropriateness and comfort. I think Birkenstock are fine

Okay, awesome! Thank you for your quick reply!

Ciao Natalie Did you see my post?

' src=

Bermudas for men are Ok?

As long as they hit the knee, they should be fine!

' src=

Hi my daughter is travelling with school to Vatican museum. Can she wear shorts with opaque tights.

This will really depend on the specific guard who lets in her group. Usually, knees being covered are the rule and pants would work but I’m not sure tights are seen as the same thing. A skirt that reaches the knees would be a safer choice

' src=

Hi, I will be going to the Vatican on a Friday night in August. I’m curious about the back of a dress I’m considering from eShakti. It has a lattice back so the back strap might show a bit. Is that acceptable or should I keep looking? Here’s the website of the dress. http://www.eshakti.com/shop/Dresses/Lattice-back-cotton-voile-belted-shirtdress-CL0067829

That looks good to me! If you are still nervous, you can bring a light scarf to use as a wrap but it seems like a lovely outfit which meets the vatican dress code.

' src=

A word of warning.–Just because the tourists have to be covered up does not mean the artwork is. It is a cornucopia of nudity of bare breasted women and male genitalia. Papal Porn I guess.

' src=

What about kids? Can kids wear flip flops? And do they also have to cover up like adults?

Flip flops are fine as long as they can stand and walk in them for a long time. They don’t have to be as carefully covered but should essentially wear what you would allow them to go to church/place of worship in

' src=

for a girl, is it acceptable to wear leggings (or jeans) and a t-shirt? or is that too informal?

Hi Lauren – it should be fine. Many people do dress casually but the trick is to be well covered and respectful

' src=

hello! I’m visiting the Vatican in a few days, I have a long dress that just barely covers the knee and is somewhat see-through in some lighting, do you think it would be okay? should i wear a top/sportsbra underneath or should i ditch the whole dress? thank you for reading!

If it touches the knee, that should be fine. Transparent/see through/visible bra won’t work, however.

' src=

Hi Natalie, we are currently in Rome, my husband is planning on wearing tracksuit pants, will this be acceptable as he did not pack his denim?

Yes, that is fine! The issue is more coverage than how formal

' src=

We did a skip-the-line guided tour of the Vatican (all the highlights) last month (in late August 2019). There must be a summer dress code because there were many many people in shorts. It was a very warm day and my group of 6 was very unhappy that I made them all wear long pants in the sweltering heat. Every place we visited at the Vatican, we were with people in shorts and even some sleeveless shirts. I had to hear about it all day; my group wouldn’t let me forget that I steered them wrong (based mainly on the advice from this website). I figured better safe than sorry, — and we were all indeed sorry!

I am very surprised! Certainly not allowed in St. Peters.

' src=

Hi ! I wanna know if there is any restriction about the color or not ! Tnx

No! No issues with colors

' src=

hi Natalie! Are the Steve Madden black Kimmie sandals okay for day-to-day wear?

if you can walk 5+ miles a day in them!

' src=

Hi Natalie my partner and I are travelling to Rome next month to go to watch Scotland v Italy in rugby and we were planning on visiting the Vatican in the morning. As my partner usually wears a kilt. Can you please advise whether a kilt would be permissible? It is basically to save us time travelling back to our hotel to change then heading to the rugby so we want to be prepared. Thank you.

Hi Mary! As long as it is to the knee, that should be fine! Especially for the museums. They can sometimes be strict at St. Peter’s Basilica if it really doesn’t cover the knee but it all depends on the guard and the day

' src=

In the future I would love to visit Vatican. If I wore a Gap dress that I have that is still pretty modest albeit slightly above the knee. And shoulders are exposed but I guess a shawl would solve that problem. And I do have a pair of comfortable white trainers. Or sneakers as they are called in America. Just asking for future reference.

It will be fine for the Museums! For St. Peter’s – if it doesn’t cover the knees, then it depends on the guard on the day. Some can be sticklers.

' src=

Your blog is amazing, so thank you! I am visiting the Vatican this weekend. Will a maxi dress with a slit be okay? It is slightly sheer, but the material covers to my ankles!

' src=

I would recommend wearing comfortable shoes and clothes that you can move in. The Vatican is a large building and it can be quite hot.

What to wear to the Vatican

vatican tour outfit

What is the dress code at the Vatican?

“Every place has its own dress code!” We’ve learned this from our parents since we were kids. Although we wanted to rebel against it and dress as we wished, we knew deep down inside they were right. Just like we don’t wear wedding gowns to an informal gathering and we don’t show up to the beach wearing sweaters, we don’t enter Vatican City ignoring its dress code, either. If you’ve decided to visit Vatican City on your next trip to Rome, it’s essential that you present yourself in this sacred place (and any other church) wearing appropriate clothing. Keep in mind that if you don’t comply with the dress code, you’ll be denied access to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica .

What should women wear at the Vatican

You must cover your arms, shoulders and back. Therefore, tops or shorts are not suitable. If you’re planning on wearing a dress, make sure it isn’t sleeveless. If you didn’t pack any clothes that fit the above description, we suggest you cover your arms and shoulders with a scarf or a shawl. In case you don’t have these either, you can head to the entrance of St. Anna and purchase a scarf there.

Remember that if you’re wearing a skirt, dress or shorts, they must cover your knees – hence avoid low-cuts at all costs. If you’ve packed hats in your suitcase, remember to to leave them at your accommodation as they are not allowed in Vatican City. Fortunately, there is no rule regarding footwear. However, since you’ll be walking quite a bit, we recommend you wear comfortable shoes. Shoes like sneakers are both fashionable and comfortable and can be a good choice. Here’s a quick recap on what you can wear to the Vatican:

  • T-shirts instead of tops
  • Trousers or long skirts
  • Shorts and skirts that cover your knees
  • Scarves instead of hats
  • Comfortable walking shoes instead of high heels or flip-flops

What should men wear at the Vatican

The Vatican’s dress code also applies to men. According to the rules, you should not wear sleeveless shirts or shorts. That doesn’t mean, however, that you should wear a suit, you can still wear informal clothes. Just remember that you cannot wear clothing with offensive phrases or graphics . Our recommendation is you wear a shirt that covers your shoulders plus a pair of trousers. In general, the Vatican’s dress code is much easier to comply with in winter rather than in the hot summer months. That’s why we suggest you’re extra careful about the material of your clothing , which could make the humidity easier or impossible to tolerate. For instance, linen and cotton are perfect choices to wear at the Vatican or elsewhere in Rome. To sum up, make sure to wear these:

  • Long-sleeved shirts
  • Trousers or jeans

What Diplomats Should Wear to Visit the Pope

Furthermore, Vatican City also has strict dress code regulations regarding visits to the Pope from diplomats. But we should also mention that these regulations have been eased after Pope Francis. According to tradition, women who visit the Pope should wear black clothes that completely hide their body parts. Furthermore, they should also wear a scarf or lace shawl to cover their hair and shoulders. The black color in the Catholic Church signifies virtue and humbleness and only a few queens, princesses, or diplomats can wear white clothes before the Pope. For instance, Charlene, Princess of Monaco, enjoyed such privilege, while Cherie Blair, wife of former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair, opened herself to criticism after wearing white clothing before Pope Benedict XVI.

What NOT to take with you to the Vatican

There are other rules you should consider before your visit to the Vatican Museums and St. Peter’s Basilica. For instance, you cannot take animals with you , with the exception for guide dogs for the blind or partially-sighted. Using camera tripods, talking on mobile phones, smoking, and taking snacks, foods or alcoholic beverages are also prohibited. We recommend you pay enough attention to these rules so as to have a pleasant and memorable visit without any interruptions. You can find more useful information about what you can take to the Vatican here.

Planning on visiting the Vatican when you come to Rome?

Here's everything you need to know!

Visiting the Vatican - everything you need to know

Here is what you really need to know about visiting the Vatican:

  • When to go ? (what time of year and time of day)
  • What to see ? (St. Peters Basilica and the Vatican Museums, and much more!)
  • Which should you visit first, the Vatican Museums (Sistine Chapel) or Saint Peter's Basilica ?
  • How to skip the lines for Saint Peter's Basilica ?
  • How to get tickets/skip the line to the Vatican museums ?
  • Can you just visit the Sistine Chapel ?
  • Can you see the Sistine Chapel without crowds ?
  • How do you visit the Vatican Gardens ?
  • How do you visit St Peter's tomb ?
  • How to plan all your Vatican visits for your trip ?
  • How to get to the Vatican ?
  • Where to eat near the Vatican ?

The first time I came to Rome as an adult, I missed seeing the Sistine Chapel because I had no idea the Vatican Museums closed at 2pm (long before smartphones and Google, ahem.)

It must have been a Free Sunday, when the Vatican Museums are open and free but with reduced hours.

Now that I live here, I go often to Saint Peter's Basilica , Saint Peter's Square , and the Vatican Museums .

I also helped thousands of our guests plan their visits in the 17 years we ran our B&B .

Based on years of first-hand experience, I know how to tell you what to do and what not to do.

You can avoid a stressful visit to the Vatican by reading my tips first!

QUICK FACTS ABOUT VISITING VATICAN CITY

  • You don't need a passport.
  • Vatican City is a separate state from Italy, with just over 500 residents.
  • The two main places to visit are Saint Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums (where the Sistine Chapel is.)
  • The pope is head of Vatican City.
  • The pope's church is not Saint Peter's Basilica. It is Saint John in Lateran.
  • You can visit the Vatican, and you can stay nearby, but you cannot sleep inside the Vatican.

Visiting the Vatican - When to go

queue at saint peters in summer

  • There really is no "best day" for visiting Vatican City, i.e. when there are fewer people. The Vatican is Rome's most popular tourist destination and is pretty much always busy. You might consider Tuesday or Thursday as your best bets. Dates around a weekend can be a bit busier, and on Wednesday there is (usually) the Papal Audience , meaning even more crowds.
  • In the mornings, many tour groups show up, including those offering early skip-the-line access. Also, people in general come early to try to "beat the line," so you may find the Vatican Museums much more crowded in the early morning than you expect, and  slightly less crowded in mid-afternoon.
  • St Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums tend to be even more crowded on Saturdays , when Rome fills up with weekend visitors.
  • The Vatican Museum is closed Sundays, except for the last Sunday of every month , when they are free . This is the most crowded day you can imagine for visiting the Vatican Museums .
  • On Wednesdays (except for  July , when the pope generally takes a break ), the pope holds an audience at St Peter's Basilica . In warmer months, it will be in Saint Peter's Square . In colder months, or if it's raining , it will be in an auditorium-type hall just to the left of the basilica. This means that the whole area will be packed due to all the people who attend the papal audience , many of whom visit the Vatican Museums after the audience.
  • If you do visit Vatican City on a Wednesday , know that St Peter's Basilica will be closed until the papal audience is over (around 12-1pm.)
  • As for time of year, winter low season months are best if you want to be more relaxed and find smaller crowds . This means most of December ( except  December 8 , and Christmas through the Epiphany, January 6 ), January and February . Believe it or not, it's just as crowded at to visit Vatican City between Christmas and January 6 as it is during summer.
  • Here's  how and when to include visiting the Vatican in a 3-day itinerary in Rome .

saint peter's square on january 2

IMPORTANT TIP :

To visit St Peters Basilica and the Sistine Chapel, you must be properly dressed : no bare knees, midriffs or shoulders.

Sandals and jeans are fine.

Be careful when wearing knee-length shorts and skirts; the opinions of the Vatican guards as to what is acceptable may vary.

You may wish to bring a sarong or wear the kinds of shorts that have attachable legs, such as hiking trousers .

In a pinch, you will find plenty of vendors just outside the Vatican, who sell t-shirts or scarves.

No matter what season you visit Rome, here are 4 things never to leave at home:

Visiting the Vatican - What to see?

The main things to see when visiting the Vatican are  Saint Peter’s Basilica  and the  Vatican Museums .

You can see one and not the other, although v isiting both in a single day is very do-able.

Looking for Michelangelo's masterpieces?

Michelangelo’s Pietà is inside Saint Peter's Basilica.

Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel is inside the Vatican Museums.

Michelangelo's pietà

Just try not to plan any other big visit like another museum or archeological site like the Coloseum  for the day you visit the Vatican, as you will be pretty exhausted.

Do you really want to visit the Vatican and Colosseum in one day? Here's how!

Or take the stress out of it by taking this "Rome in a Day" Tour with Vatican, Colosseum & Historic Center.

St Peter's Basilica

Saint Peter’s Basilica  is a Renaissance-era church and by many standards, the world’s largest.

The Vatican is a basilica but not a cathedral, as it does not have its own bishop.

st peters basilica central nave

The main cathedral of the “Bishop of Rome”, as the pope is called, is San Giovanni in Laterano , or Saint John in Lateran .

But the pope is head of Vatican City , where he resides.

It's a little confusing isn't it?

Anyway, just think of the Vatican as a huge church, with a lot to see inside.

St Peter's Dome

It's very much worth  visiting the basilica's dome , but you should know it can get a little crowded up there, and there are a LOT of steps.

dome inside st peters

The first level is 231 steps, but there is an elevator option. ( Someone in a wheelchair or with walking difficulties can take the lift to this first level.)

The second portion is another 320 steps, with no elevator option.

The dome gets narrower as you go up, so you will be climbing this part single file, and with the roof slanting over your head.

I say this as someone with a close relative with vertigo: you may want to avoid climbing the dome at the Vatican if you suffer from vertigo or claustrophobia.

But if none of that is an issue, then do it!

You'll love the views from up there, both of the church and of the surrounding city.

Visit my dedicated page all about Saint Peter's dome and how to climb it.

Michelangelo’s Pieta

My favorite piece of art inside of  St Peter's Basilica  is Michelangelo’s Pietà .

Actually, it may be my favorite piece of art in the world.

An exaggeration?

I can't help it...just look at it:

michelangelo's pietà

It’s on your right as soon as you walk inside Saint Peter's Basilica.

When I visited it with my mom, she cried, saying “look at her face, it’s just about a mother’s love for her child."

Unfortunately, someone wielding an axe once attacked it, and it’s now behind glass.

But you can still see it very well.

And take note of Mary’s face.

It’s really special when you see it in person.

Michelangelo Tidbit :

This was one of Michelangelo’s first major works.

He made it when he was only 22.

He was not sure people would know he did it, so he snuck in late one night and carved his name (Michelangelo Buonarroti) on Mary’s sash.

The Pietà is the only sculpture Michelangelo ever signed (or needed to sign.)

Vatican Grottoes - The Tombs of the Popes

Inside Saint Peter's Basilica, you can go down one level and see the area where some of the popes are buried.

bernini's baldachino (canopy) inside saint peter's basilica

Saint Peter is said to be entombed just underneath the church .

This is why many popes are also buried here.

It's quite interesting to visit the popes' tombs , called the Vatican Grottoes   - there is a lot of history down there.

Don't worry, it's not dark or claustrophobic.

On the contrary, it's a huge open space full of light and lots to see (no photos allowed.)

To visit the Vatican Grottoes, get up close to Bernini's Baldachin and look for the entrance nearby.

It's free to visit the Vatican Grottoes.

You should make sure you are done visiting the basilica or have a plan to go back up, because the normal route through the grottoes has you exit the basilica entirely.

Not to be confused with St. Peter's tomb

When people talk about visiting the Vatican grottoes, they are referring to a place where you can see the tombs of many popes (as I wrote above.)

But this is not the same as visiting the  Vatican Necropolis , where St. Peter is said to be buried.

A  visit to Saint Peter’s tomb , also referred to as a scavi  visit, is a special and wonderful thing to do, and I highly recommend it. (" Scavi " means "excavations".)

It is a delicate archeological site, and they only take 250 people in per day, in 12-person tours at a time, so you must  book way in advance . (No photos allowed.)

NEW FOR 2024!

The archeological area of the Vatican Necropolis of Via Triumphalis is now open for visitors.

This is an ancient Roman burial site that is within the Vatican walls and before now was very difficult to get access to.

You can only enter as part of an official Vatican tour group, and tickets need to be purchased through the official website .

This is an entirely separate visit, so you will not have access to either St Peter's Basilica or the Vatican Museums.

Click here to watch my YouTube video about it and see what it's like!

The Vatican Museums

The second major site to visit at the Vatican is the Vatican Museums.

Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican museums

This is the part about Vatican City that will take most of your time and energy.

The Vatican Museum contains the world’s largest private art collection (and just imagine that much of the art they own is not even on display!)

They are called "museums" and not just singular "museum" because the museums were started in 1506 and have been added to many times over the centuries.

They now occupy many different buildings all connected to on another.

That's one reason there is so much to see!

You will see a lot of art inside the Vatican Museums, including paintings, sculptures, ancient artifacts, and much more.

I think the number one thing people want to see when they visit is the Sistine Chapel.

More things you will see at the Vatican:

Besides the two main sites - the museums (Sistine Chapel) and the basilica, there are more things you will see when you visit Vatican City.

Look for these as you walk around:

St. Peter's Square

It would be easy to take Saint Peter's Square, Piazza San Pietro in Italian, for granted.

After all, if you're beelining to get into the basilica, you might be focused on the security queues and wondering how long you will have to wait.

saint peter's square at dusk

But St. Peter's Square, also called Vatican Square, is worth visiting and enjoying by itself.

It's the only part of Vatican City you can visit without any tickets or queuing.

If you have very limited time , you may even decide that this is about as much as you want to see of Vatican City, since everything else involves queues and/or tickets plus an involved visit inside.

Click here to visit my page all about St. Peter's Square, its history, and what to see.

The Swiss Guard

You might spy one or more of the Swiss Guard at the gate to Vatican City.

swiss guard at vatican city

The Swiss Guard wear different outfits depending on their duties, but they are all dressed in costumes originally designed in the early 1500s (although not by Michelangelo, an urban myth.)

swiss guard at the vatican

The Swiss Guard have a specific duty to guard the pope's life and Saint Peter's Basilica.

They are the world's smallest army and they are very well trained.

You will not see the Swiss Guard at the Vatican Museums.

There, you will see Vatican Museums guards who dress in more modern attire.

The Leonine Walls

In the 9th century, Pope Leo IV had defensive walls built around Vatican City following the sacking by raiders of Old St. Peter's Basilica in 846.

You can still see those walls today in and around the Vatican, especially if you visit the Vatican Gardens .

You can also see parts of these walls surrounding Saint Peter's Square on the side where the security gates are, and along the way from the Vatican to nearby Castel Sant'Angelo .

The Vatican Post Office

Don't miss a visit to the Vatican Post Office if you want to mail any postcards.

It's easier and more efficient than going to the Italian Post Office, and your mail will get there faster!

There is also a Vatican mailbox up on the roof ( Saint Peter's Dome ), and usually another post office in Saint Peter's Square .

More sites you can visit in Vatican City

Besides Saint Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums, there are some more sites you can visit in Vatican City.

You have to pay for these (and for the scavi and gardens, you must book in advance.)

You will find more details about each one on their respective dedicated pages:

  • Saint Peter's Tomb (Vatican Necropolis or Scavi )
  • Saint Peter's Dome

Which to see first - The Vatican Museums/Sistine Chapel, or St. Peter's Basilica?

If you book a tour of the Vatican, usually this means taking a guided tour of the Vatican Museums , which ends with the Sistine Chapel .

Some tours include taking the shortcut from the Sistine Chapel into St Peters Basilica.

There has been some back and forth recently about whether the shortcut is available or not, but for now, it is once again the case that  you can only take the shortcut  from the Sistine Chapel to  St Peter's Basilica  if you are on a tour that  INCLUDES  the basilica.

The Vatican can, and does, change their mind frequently on this matter, so if it is important to you to be able to take this shortcut, I recommend booking a tour that ends in St Peter's Basilica to be on the safe side.

If you are on a tour that ends in the Basilica the decision is made for you.

But if you are taking a Vatican Museums tour that does not include the Basilica, or if you are visiting the Vatican Museums on your own, you'll have to decide what order to visit the museums and the basilica in, assuming you want to visit both on the same day, which many people do.

How long does it take to visit the Vatican Museums?

vatican museums pinecone courtyard

To  visit the Vatican Museums  (where the Sistine Chapel is),  you need a purchase a ticket  (unless you  come on the Free Sunday .)

Once inside, even if you go quickly, you will need about 2 hours for this this visit.

If you are not able to take the shortcut from the Sistine Chapel to Saint Peter's basilica, you will exit the museums where you entered them.

vatican museums entrance and exit

This is about a 15-20 minute walk from Saint Peter's Square and the entrance to the basilica.

Click here to see a map of Vatican City and how far apart the entrances of the Museums and the Basilica are  (it opens in a new window.)

St Peter's Basilica Shortcut

You can only take the shortcut from the Sistine Chapel to St Peter's Basilica if you are on a tour that INCLUDES the basilica.

The shortcut is open from 9:30 am - 5 or 5:30PM, and it's ONLY accessible to tour companies or private guides that you book OUTSIDE the Vatican Museums website.

The Vatican Museums does not have any ticket or tour that includes the shortcut.

This means that you won't have access to the shortcut during the  KeyMaster tour , the  Extra Time tour , or any other tour that does not specifically include the basilica.

If you book any tour of the Vatican Museums, you can check the details to see if it finishes in the  Sistine Chapel  or the basilica.

Click here to view a map of Vatican City  (it will open in a new page.)

How long does it take to visit Saint Peter's Basilica?

A visit inside Saint Peter's Basilica could take anywhere from 1-2 hours, not including the time you spend in line waiting to go through security (assuming you go through security in the front and do not take the shortcut from the Sistine Chapel.)

To visit Saint Peter's Basilica, you do not need (nor can you buy) tickets, as it's free to go inside.

But you do have to wait in the line for security, which is airport-style - there is an x-ray machine to put your items in and you will walk through a metal detector.

long lines at saint peter's basilica

And that can cause the queues to get pretty long.

Lately, the lines to get into Saint Peter's Basilica have been so long, they are looping back again around the square.

Wondering which tour to take of the Vatican Museums?

Visit my page about Vatican Museum tours to find out all the options!

vatican tour outfit

If you book a Vatican Museums tour that does not allow you access to the Basilica, and/or you want to visit the Basilica separately, even on a different day, I'd suggest getting to Saint Peter's Basilica when it opens at 7 AM (if you want to avoid the line).

The lines are longest from about 10 AM - 5 PM, and in high season can be long throughout the day, even from 7 AM until closing!

Skipping the lines at Saint Peter's Basilica

The easiest way to skip the lines at Saint Peter's Basilica is to visit it using the shortcut from the Sistine Chapel (which currently is only available on booked museum tours that end in Saint Peter's Basilica).

There has been some back and forth recently about whether the shortcut is available or not, but for now, it is once again the case that  you can only take the shortcut  from  the Sistine Chapel to  St Peter's Basilica  if you are on a tour that  INCLUDES  the basilica.

As of now, you cannot do this  unless you are on a tour .

If you only plan to visit Saint Peter's Basilica , and not the museums, or you decide to visit these two sites separately, you can avoid the queues by following the tips in my video above:

  • Come when it opens at 7 AM
  • Come in Low Season
  • Book a visit to Saint Peter's tomb
  • Use the Pilgrims' entrance - reserved for prayer or attending mass or confession

Skipping the line to get into the Vatican Museums

This may be the number 1 question I get about visiting Rome - How to skip the line for the Vatican Museums?

It's quite simple:

  • You can pre-purchase tickets to the Vatican Museums through the Vatican's website . This means that you will not have to stand in the line waiting to buy tickets. You will, however, have to wait in a very short line of others like you, who have pre-booked tickets and have to pick them up. (The tickets you purchase in advance are more of a voucher, and they must be converted into physical paper tickets to enter the museums.) You also still need to go through security as everyone does. So you do not entirely skip the line, but your line will be much shorter.
  • You can pre-purchase tickets to the Vatican Museums through a ticket reseller . There is usually a small surcharge for this but it can be worth it due to 1) Ease of use and/or 2) the possibility of finding tickets available here when tickets are not available on the Vatican Museums' website.
  • You can purchase an Omnia Pass  or Turbo Pass .  These will also get you a tour with a guide from the Vatican Museums, as above. It’s not as simple as it sounds and you will need to be careful to understand what you are getting into. Click here to go to my page about the Roma Pass and Omnia Pass  or to this page about other Rome City Passes for more details about these passes.
  • You can  book a tour of the Vatican Museums , either with a tour company or with the Vatican Museums themselves.  Your entry tickets are included in the tour, so you only have to go through the security line.
  • If you book a visit to the Vatican Gardens , skip-the-line tickets to the Vatican Museums are included!
  • I do not recommend this at all, but if you have not booked tickets, and they are sold out online, and you find yourself arriving at the Vatican Museums, you will ALWAYS find touts selling you a skip-the-line ticket or tour. I don't recommend it because you cannot be sure they are legit, and if they are, you have no idea what kind of tour you are getting. I also just can't stand, in principle, to be so bombarded by these guys every time I am within a mile of Vatican City. But it can be a good option if it's your last recourse and the lines are crazy long. Just be aware that  only licensed tour guides may give tours inside Vatican City .

Visiting the Vatican Museums with a Guide

visiting the vatican with a tour

Most Vatican City tourism consists primarily of a visit inside the Vatican Museums, which always includes  the Sistine Chapel .

Some tours also include a visit or even a tour inside Saint Peter's Basilica.

You may expect a guided tour of the Vatican Museums and Basilica to last roughly three hours total.

To find out about the many different kinds of tours you can book, visit my page about Vatican Museum Tours , which breaks down your options between group tours, early access tours, semi-private tours and more.

Can you just see the Sistine Chapel?

No, you cannot just see the Sistine Chapel .

To see the Sistine Chapel , you must go through the entire Vatican Museums, which can take at least 2 hours if you tour it and see the highlights .

The Sistine Chapel is at the very end.

last judgement inside sistine chapel

That said, if you are interested in an "Express Tour" of the Sistine Chapel, you can book this tour that skips the line then beelines to the Sistine Chapel and finishes in Saint Peter's Basilica .

This tour is only 1 hour and 45 minutes and does not include a tour of the rest of the Vatican Museums.

You do still have to walk through them, but the focus of the tour will be the Sistine Chapel and Saint Peter's Basilica.

(If you are really pressed for time, you could peel off once you get to the basilica and just not finish the tour.)

is it worth taking the time to explore the museums?

I really do believe that visiting the Vatican museums  is absolutely worth doing in its entirety, even if you really only wanted to see the Sistine Chapel.

The  rest of the museums   are truly wonderful.

You have the Raphael rooms, the maps gallery, the floor-to-ceiling tapestries, papal apartments, Etruscan art, and  so much more.

Click here to visit my page about the top 10 Vatican Museums must-sees.

Raphael's "School of Athens" in the Vatican Museums

I highly suggest  taking a tour  to visit the museums.

They will take care of getting your tickets.

But if you go your own without a tour, you could get the audio guide, or follow my instructions here for the best way to visit the Vatican Museums .

And you will have to book your tickets on your own .

If you are heading to the Vatican in the morning, as I said above, I suggest you visit Saint Peter’s Basilica first, and the museums later, because the queues for Saint Peter's Basilica have gotten so long (sometimes it's a 1-2 hour wait to get in!)

If you decide to go to the Vatican Museums first, just make sure to leave enough time to stand in line to visit Saint Peter's so that you get inside while there is still some daylight, so you can enjoy the sun coming through all the stained glass.

Can you see the Sistine Chapel without the crowds?

Perhaps the easiest way to see the Sistine Chapel with fewer crowds is to come in really low season .

But we hardly have a low season anymore in Rome, and even when we do, somehow the Vatican is always still crowded.

So how can you see the Sistine Chapel without the crowds?

It is possible!

How to plan all your Vatican trips during your stay

The typical way of visiting the Vatican is to spend half a day seeing the  Vatican Museums  and  Saint Peter's Basilica .

These are both easy to fit into a typical  3-day visit to Rome .

The perfect 3-day itinerary in Rome

Trying to figure out how to organize your visit to Rome? I've got the perfect 3-day itinerary for first-time visitors (or those who have not been here in a while.) It works for a 2.5 day visit as well.

In my 3-day itinerary, you'll see all the major must-see Rome attractions like the Vatican , Colosseum , Trevi Fountain , Pantheon , Piazza Navona , Spanish Steps , Castel Sant'Angelo , and much more.

And if you have more time, or want suggestions for extra/other things to do, you'll find that there too.

Visit my page with the best 3-day itinerary in Rome for first-timers .

vatican museums spiral staircase

I have found that often when people can get tickets to special things at the Vatican, like St Peters tomb (the Vatican Necropolis, or scavi ), the Papal Audience , or the Vatican Gardens , they often want to also visit the Vatican Museums on the same day.

Here's my advice for visiting Vatican City when you want to see more than just the Vatican Museums:

Including the Papal Audience

How to visit the vatican museums and attend the papal audience.

Papal Audience tickets  are not difficult to come by, and since it's "in the morning", many visitors assume it would be a good idea to go to the Vatican Museums right after the audience.

pope francis greets the crowds

I don't agree.

If you are really short on time, then, you CAN go to the Vatican Museums after the Papal Audience.

It's just that this is going to make for a pretty exhausting day.

To go to the Papal audience, you need to get there by 8am to get a decent spot, let alone a seat.

The audience begins around 9:30 AM and finishes around noon.

You'll probably want to grab at least a snack or lunch somewhere in there .

This means going inside the museums from about 2 PM once you have made your way to the Vatican Museum entrance.

If you also visit St. Peter's Basilica after the museums (which is typical), that is a 3-4 hour visit.

And a very long day. (Also, if you want to climb the dome , you likely won't get there in time.)

My suggestion?

If you can break these visits up over two days, I would.

Attend the Papal Audience and then go inside Saint Peter's Basilica (and climb the dome if you want.)

Then on a separate day, visit the Vatican Museums and see the Sistine Chapel.

rome pantheon

Including a visit to the Scavi (St Peter's tomb)

How to visit the vatican museums and also take a scavi tour.

At the end of the  scavi  tour (St. Peter's tomb), you wind up inside  Saint Peter's basilica .

So you will already see that.

You could also  climb St. Peter's dome  if you have time and energy.

St. Peter's Dome inside

Visiting the Vatican Museums takes easily 2.5 - 3 hours, and that does not include the time it takes GETTING there once you leave the basilica.

If you are coming to the museums from St. Peter's basilica, you need to factor in about 15-20 minutes' walk to the Vatican museums entrance.

This is after you've already done a 1.5 hour scavi tour, and spent time walking around one of the largest churches in the world.

So as you can see, adding the Vatican Museums makes it a pretty exhausting day.

If you need to do it all in one day, make sure to book your scavi tour first, then book your museums visit with at least 4 hours between visits.

Break this up over two days.

Book the scavi tour.

You have no control over when they will grant you tickets, so if you are lucky enough to get them, you can then book other things around that.

Plan to see St. Peter's basilica (and climb the dome) on this day.

Then, book your Vatican Museums visit for another day.

HOW TO VISIT ST PETERS TOMB, THE VATICAN MUSEUMS (SISTINE CHAPEL), AND ATTEND THE PAPAL AUDIENCE

You are definitely going to need two days.

First book the scavi visit  which is never on a Wednesday mornings anyway (the Papal Audience is on Wednesdays.)

Plan to  visit St Peter's Basilica  after that, since you will come out into the basilica after the tour anyway.

If you want to  climb St Peter's dome , you will do it on this day.

This is a pretty long and full day by itself.

st peters basilica

Then, once you get your  Papal Audience tickets , book your tickets or tour of the Vatican Museums for after the audience (even if I said above I discourage doing all this in one day, at least if you don't include the basilica it's a little less tiring).

This will be a very full and long day also.

Ready to plan your trip?

book your train

Including a visit to the Vatican Gardens

If you want to visit the vatican gardens and visit the scavi (st. peter's tomb).

TWO Vatican Gardens

On this page, I'm referring to the gardens inside Vatican City , i.e. directly behind Saint Peter's Basilica.

There are ALSO papal gardens at the Pope's summer residence, the Apostolic palace at Castel Gandolfo.

To learn more about the gardens at Castel Gandolfo and how to visit them (it's easy!), visit my dedicated page here.

If you are able to get tickets to St. Peter's tomb ( scavi ) and also the Vatican Gardens , congratulations!

Here's how to include visiting the Vatican Museums and St. Peter's basilica as well.

vatican gardens turtle fountain

First book the scavi visit .

Then book the Vatican Gardens tour on a different day, and plan to visit the Vatican Museums right after the gardens, as it's included in your ticket price with the gardens.

Visit St. Peter's Basilica after the scavi, again, on a different day from the Gardens/Museums.

If you want to do it all - visit the Vatican Museums, vatican gardens, papal audience, scavi tour and st peter's basilica and dome

How you plan your days fitting in these visits will depend on two things  - the Papal audience , which is always Wednesday morning 10am - 12pm (although you need to get there by no later than 8am); and the time of your scavi booking (which depends on the scavi office - you cannot control this).

Once you get those two bookings, the next difficult booking to get is for the Vatican Gardens .

vatican gardens and vista of st. peter's basilica

So book that one around the Papal Audience and scavi tour.

Note that tours of the Vatican Gardens are at 9am or 11am.

They are also not held on the morning of the Papal Audience.

I'd suggest you spread this over 3 days.

Or, to fit this into two (intense) days, try to do the scavi tour after the Papal audience, if you can get scavi tickets for the afternoon.

Then book the Vatican Gardens, Vatican Museums , and St. Peter's Basilica on a separate day.

(And climb St. Peter's dome once you are inside St. Peter's basilica if you like.)

How to Get to Vatican City

You have several options for how to get to the Vatican.

But the most important factor to consider is what you are visiting first.

Click here to see a Google map showing where the different entrances are for the Vatican Museums, Saint Peter's Square, and the scavi entrance . It will open in a new window.

How to get to the Vatican Museums

The Vatican Museums entrance is on Viale Vaticano .

If you plan to take a taxi , just tell the driver "Vatican Museums".

Visiting the Vatican Museums and arriving by Metro

Otherwise, the most common way to get there is by Metro.

Rome's metro red line A has two stops, equidistant from the entrance to the museums (about a 10-12 minute walk): Ottaviano and Cipro .

Ottaviano metro stop in rome

The Ottaviano metro stop is the first one you will come to if you are coming from Rome's center.

When you emerge from the metro station, you just need to follow the crowd towards Vatican City.

Once you see Michelangelo's bastions (walls), follow them to the right and you will come to the entrance of the Vatican Museums.

If you are visiting the Vatican museums from the opposite direction, or if you forget to get off at Ottaviano, or, better yet, if you want to get off at the next stop to get some fabulous pizza by the slice from Bonci's Pizzarium, then you will get off at Cipro stop.

bonci pizza

However, from this stop, you cannot see the same stream of people, nor can you immediately see the Vatican City walls, so you will need to navigate a little bit to find the walls.

Once you see the walls, follow them until you come to the entrance.

Visiting the Vatican Museums and Arriving by Bus

Another option for arriving at the entrance of the Vatican museums is to take a bus or buses.

Many buses will get you pretty close to the entrance of the Vatican museums.

These include the 492, 49, 23, and the 81.

How to Get to Saint Peter's Basilica and Square

The entrance to St. Peter's Basilica is on Saint Peter's Square .

This is about a 15-20 minute walk from the Vatican Museums, so if you are not visiting the Vatican Museums (or not visiting them first), and want to go directly to the basilica, you can still take the metro, but make sure to get off at Ottaviano, not Cipro.

From Ottaviano metro stop, St. Peter's Square is about a 10-15 minute walk .

Follow the crowds, but at the walls, do not make a right towards the museums, just keep going straight.

Buses that arrive closest to St. Peter's Square include the 40 and the 64.

How to get to the Scavi/St Peter's Tomb

If you are visiting the Vatican for an appointment to see St. Peter's tomb, the fastest and easiest way to arrive is by taxi .

They can drop you right in front of the entrance where you need to go, which is at the Swiss Guard, to the left of the basilica as you face it.

If you take a bus, get the 64, as it drops you about a block away.

To take the metro , make sure to get off at Ottaviano, and give yourself about 20 minutes' walking time from there to get the the entrance of St. Peter's tomb.

Where to Eat Near the Vatican

There is no place to eat inside St Peter's Basilica or in St Peter's Square (there is a tiny snack bar on the roof of the basilica, which you can only access if you climb the dome .)

There are some cafés and fast-food options inside the Vatican Museums.

There are also fun dining options you can book, and combine with your visit to the Museums.

Otherwise, visit my page about lots of options for eating breakfast, lunch, dinner and aperitivo near the Vatican .

Vatican dress code explained

  • In General informations Plan your visit

It is important to take note of the Vatican dress code before you visit – it is likely you will get turned away if you do not pay attention to the requirements.

In fact, the Vatican states that “Admission to the Museums is allowed only to properly dressed visitors”.

The Holy See is home to the Pope. Catholics believe he is God’s representative on earth.

Like in many holy places in Italy and elsewhere worldwide, it is expected that in churches and other locations in the Vatican that a modest dress code is applied.

Is There A Dress Code At The Vatican & What To Expect?

Dress code in the Vatican City

We have just discovered there is a dress code in the Vatican – but what does that actually mean?

Well, it’s a basic code you need to follow to 100% guarantee you will be allowed in. The Vatican website gives clear guidance here , but in general – anything above the knee or the upper arms should be covered.

If you fail to follow the guidance in the areas it applies to you run the risk of getting turned away. The areas where it is required are the Sistine Chapel , St Peter’s Basilica and The Vatican Museums .

Let’s get into the specifics.

How Strict Is The Vatican Dress Code?

Signs are on display at the Vatican to advise you of the requirements – the basics being that you should not show lower legs and keep your top half covered at least above the elbows.

But in reality, it is much more subjective than that. For example, as the guards decide who can and can’t enter we have had reports of people being turned away for other reasons beyond that.

This includes those wearing Shirts with offensive slogans or language , informal baseball caps or hats, low cleavage on ladies, ripped jeans and even flip flops.

On the other hand, on really hot days we have seen people being allowed in shirts and lighter clothing at a particular guard's discretion, but don’t bank on this – it is still likely you will be turned away.

Quick List Of Forbidden Things To Wear

These three things are absolutely forbidden in the Vatican Museums:

  • Shorts or skirts above the knee
  • Spaghetti strap dresses or tank tops
  • Tops exposing midriff

Thighs Are Not Forbidden (But Not Advisable)

These things are not expressly forbidden, but for good measure and respect you should avoid wearing/displaying these items:

  • Baseball caps or hats are considered inappropriate
  • Offensive t-shirts or slogans with bad language or symbols
  • Tattoos should be covered if they will cause offense
  • Flip-flops are not forbidden but are deemed very casual – use comfortable walking shoes instead
  • Ripped clothing that exposes skin is considered inappropriate

Quick List Of The Perfect Attire For The Vatican

Perfect attire for all Vatican attractions

For men , wear a shirt or long-sleeved plain t-shirt and trousers with comfortable shoes. For ladies , dresses that come to the mid calf are acceptable.

We would advise against long flowing maxi dresses, purely because you may trip as you look at the beautiful sights in the Vatican.

Same goes for flip-flops. Whilst they are not expressly forbidden, they are a trip hazard, especially on older floors or climbing stairs. They also make a loud noise in the Sistine Chapel and may be considered by some guards to be too casual for entry.

Vatican City travel tips

What Happens If You Break Vatican City Dress Code?

If you are not wearing appropriate attire you run the risk of queuing for hours only to be turned away at the last minute by the guards.

And if you disrespect the dress code once inside the museums or chapels you will be asked to leave with no refund!

Is a Dress Code For the Vatican Unreasonable?

In our view no – it is a special religious place and should be treated with respect , as with any church or other religious place of worship or establishment.

If you do not wish to comply you can borrow plastic coverups at the doors to ensure your modesty, then discard at the end.

How To Dress For The Vatican?

How to dress for the Vatican City

Vatican Dress Code Women

The Women Vatican City Dress Code is the same as it is for men!

Here are a few top tips for ladies – don’t wear high heels or high sandals. Wear comfortable shoes .

As stated before, long flowing maxi dresses can be a trip hazard, but you may prefer to wear a three-quarter length dress to keep cool in the hot summer months.
