Tokio Hotel is a band hailing from Magdeburg, Germany who formed in 2001. Since their commercial breakthrough with the 2005 release of their album “Schrei”, they have become one of the most acclaimed pop-rock bands in the world, with a devoted, cult-like fanbase to match.

Truth be told, most “Commercially minded” bands have just as much behind the scenes help as any other band signed to a major label, be they The Black Eyed Peas or Catfish And The Bottlemen. It’s just that some bands are better at hiding what they are or denying what they are to their fanbase and to themselves. To some, Tokio Hotel are the epitome of style over substance, major label pretty boys thrown together to sell as many posters and t-shirts as records. I don’t think it’s much of a coincidence that most people who think that have never listened to a Tokio Hotel song or know anything about them beyond Bill Kaulitz’s hairstyle circa 2009.

One closer look will show you that the band have an ambition that would put most other rock groups to shame, and have done since the very beginning of the band at the turn of the 21st century. Twin brothers Bill (vocals) and Tom (guitar) Kaulitz had both been obsessed with music since they were 9 years old, and decided to form a band of their own shortly thereafter. By the time they were twelve they’d already been rocking around their home country for three years, and 2001 was when two school friends by the name of Gustav Schäfer and Georg Listing spotted them playing a small club show in their shared hometown of Magdeburg.

They were impressed with what they saw, went over and asked if they wanted to form a band together, with Schäfer and Listing on drums and bass, respectively. With that, the first incarnation of Tokio Hotel was born, in the form of the awesomely named Devilish. The band started touring feverishly very soon afterwards however, 2003 saw the band make one of the key connections to their success. Bill took part in a TV talent show called Star Search at the tender age of thirteen, he only made it to the quarter-final but in doing so, he was discovered by producer Peter Hoffman.

It was Hoffman who got the band to change their name to Tokio Hotel, named so for the bands shared love of the Japanese capital city (Tokio is its German spelling) combined with the band feeling that they lived in hotels due to their mind-boggling touring schedule. With Hoffman’s help they signed a contract with Sony BMG and built a team of creators and songwriters to help the band, who at the time had an average age of 15, on their way. They were all set to release an album with Sony as well, but it wasn’t to be, and the band had their contract terminated before it could be released.

Tokio Hotel weren’t a band to give up that easily, however. In 2005 the band were taken in by the Universal Music Group, who re-launched the band to pretty much immediate success.

Their debut single "Durch den Monsun" went straight in at number 15 on the German charts before reaching number one soon afterwards, and their follow up “Schrei” went to the top five as well. Their debut album, named after their second single, went on to sell 300’000 copies in a year and both the remaining singles went to the number one spot as well. Tokio Hotel had arrived with style.

Since then the band have become the most succesful German rock export since Rammstein, breaking America with ease and gaining one of the most devoted cult followings in modern rock while they were at it. Of course they divide opinion, every band and artist that stand for something does and should, but they’ve earned every scrap of success they’ve found over their decade and a half of being a band. They’re already something very special indeed, and their star will only shine brighter with time.

Live reviews

I've always had a soft spot for Tokio Hotel and seeing them live reminded me why. They are such an energetic yet emotional group with a mix of both meaningful, mellow songs and more funky, upbeat rock tunes! I love the variety they present.

Seeing them live was unforgettable, they sound just as good - if not better - live. The sound was just incredible, it got my heart racing and the audience rocking! The guitar and bass was excellent and the vocals blew me away. They played their heartfelt song, Automatic, which was truly emotional, I even saw a girl crying! It was beautiful to hear live and I enjoyed every second of it.

The visuals were utterly stunning. The colours from the light show were breathtaking and exciting, it really enhanced Tokio Hotel's performance. Bill Kaulitz looked amazing as always with his dark eye makeup and dramatic hairstyle. He was wearing a really interesting futuristic style outfit which I thought was really cool! The atmosphere was fantastic throughout the concert, alternating from electric and thrilling to slow and thoughtful. Everyone around me, including me and my friends, were really immersed in the music and having a ton of fun! The band themselves were very involved and dramatic in their movements, particularly Bill and Georg, the emotion they expressed with each song was wonderful to see and really gave the songs even more oomph.

I would highly recommend seeing Tokio Hotel live to anyone who enjoys rock music!

Tokio Hotel was the first pop/rock band I've ever went to. As most fans know the lead singer (Bill Kaulitz) has a unique style of fashion. Their intro was amazing. At the House of Blues-Chicago they had this sheer sheet on the stage. I thought the sheet was to protect the artist, but it purposely came down at about the second verse of the song.On the sheet the tech crew projected geometrical shapes. They used the sheet a few other time on certain songs. I was blinded by the lights, but it was beautiful.

For "Kings of Suburbia" Bill picked four girls to come on stage and dance with him. Every statement he said made me smile and for every break when the lights went down he changed his outfit. It makes me think of some hosts on award shows that change on commercial breaks, but I got to see him live. It was quicker than T.V. though.

Since it was summer they threw water at us and the bottle. I think bubbles came out at the end,but it only went to one side. I saw it all! Would I go again maybe, but I hope someone can go with me.

Despite the possible cancelation in the mid of global panic over a certain disease, the guys still came to Guadalajara, they had a great time and we just couldn't be happier about the show.

Maybe 5 more songs would've been cool but hey, a concert cannot last forever hahaha

Evrything was good, no antics or violence at all. Safe enviroment.

One of the only bands I'll ever pay to see. Great music, fun show, and they're seemingly good guys. Definitely worth supporting these guys!I haven't seen them in years and would love to see them again!

(Plus the fan girls are super funny, don't get me wrong, the guys are adorable but come on gals, chill out. *Insert laughing emoji here* lol)

Lovely guys, was happy to see them. Great lights and stage setting. Performed three old songs which got me really excited, but that’s about it. Not fan of their new music, but fan of the four. :)

Tokio Hotel Make Grand Return To London With First Show On New ‘Beyond The World’ European Tour

It’s been a long time between tours for uk fans of tokio hotel. the german quartet haven’t made it to our shores since 2019, performing at london’s o2 forum, kentish town, on april 29 that year. of course, they had intended to come sooner; like everyone else in the world they’ve had to put things on hold due to the covid-19 pandemic, and their ‘beyond the world’ tour, which had been planned for autumn 2021, had to be postponed. finally however, almost 4 years to the day, they returned, with an incredible show on april 30 at london’s o2 indigo, and the first date of their european tour..

tokio hotel europe tour 2023

Supporting Tokio Hotel on the tour is Los Angeles based pop artist and songwriter, Casey Baer. The singer, who has amassed more than 160K fans on Instagram alone, burst onto the stage, starting as she meant to finish – fast, fun, and bubbling full of energy, opening with ‘Late To The Party’, one of her original, as yet unreleased songs, before launching into her new single, ’17 Again’, which was released earlier last month. Casey got the crowd excited and singing along with her, with some audience participation on ‘PTXD’, as well as her 2022 release, ‘Never Have I Ever’. Casey ended her set with her upcoming single, ‘Stupid Boy’, which was well received. It was Casey’s first trip to the UK, and if she ever comes back with a headline show, I’m sure she’ll be very well received!

Before we knew it, the lights had dimmed and Tokio Hotel hit the stage, opening with ‘White Lies’, from their latest album, ‘2001’.

tokio hotel europe tour 2023

Next up was ‘Automatic’, from their 2009 album, ‘Humanoid’, and a clear fan favourite. Many of the fans had travelled over from Europe, bringing an infectious enthusiasm to the room. The Indigo at the O2 was the perfect size for the concert, giving an intimate and personal feel to the night. Although Tokio Hotel live in Los Angeles these days, their European fans have stood by them the whole time. It’s mad to think that this band, who are all still in their mid-30s, have been together performing as a band since 2001 (hence the title of their latest album). During that time they’ve gone from pop/alt rock to the more recent electro/synth pop styles, and the fans have stayed loyal, and as many are the same age as the band members or older, they’ve essentially all grown up together.

tokio hotel europe tour 2023

Tokio Hotel comprises twins Bill and Tom Kaulitz, drummer Gustav Schäfer and bass-guitarist Georg Listing. While it would be easy to think that the Kaulitzes are the main attraction (Bill in particular being the frontman and founder), it’s clear that you don’t keep a band together for over 20 years without every person in the group being an equal member. And so it was; while Bill was undoubtedly the main focus on the night, being his usual absolute showman self, and having no fewer than 7 costume changes – four in the first half hour – they made sure that each member got his time in the spotlight, whether it be Georg opening the show, or Gustav making wry comments in between songs.

tokio hotel europe tour 2023

While the majority of the show was high energy, Tokio Hotel made time to have some slower moments as well, such as a duet between Bill and Tom, sitting in the wall of the set, singing ‘Just A Moment’, from ‘2001’.

tokio hotel europe tour 2023

Tokio Hotel have lived between Germany and Los Angeles since 2010, and this prompted Bill to say on Sunday night that he might have some trouble remembering some of the German lyrics for their songs, and he might need some help from the audience – which of course they were happy to do, singing ‘Schwarz’, from the band’s debut album, ‘Schrei’. Later everyone joined in on the very moving ‘Spring Nicht’, the band’s plea to young people to consider solutions to their problems other than suicide.

tokio hotel europe tour 2023

The final song of the set was 2019’s ‘Chateau’, a very synth/electropop track, demonstrating the band’s current musical direction. But as the song ended, the lights remained down, and we knew it wasn’t the end. After all – we hadn’t yet heard Tokio Hotel’s best known song in the UK, ‘Durch den Monsoon’. The track, which was their debut single, was later re-recorded as ‘Monsoon’ and released on their first English-language album, ‘Scream’. The German version has made a re-appearance on ‘2001’, as ‘Durch den Monsun 2020’. The band came back on stage and played their 2022 collab with Kraftklub, ‘Fahr mit mir (4×4)’, before launching into ‘Durch Den Monson’. Finally, they brought the night to a close with ‘Runaway’, from ‘2001’.

It was a fantastic night, with many fans still singing as they left the venue. Many will probably go see other shows on this tour, but for the rest of us for whom this was our only show, we hope that Tokio Hotel will be back sooner rather than later.

Synth-pop, rock band Tokio Hotel announces “Beyond the World” tour 2023

Earlier today, I received news that synth-pop/rock band Tokio Hotel has announced some European tour dates. The band, a German equivalent of The 1975 , will kick off the ‘ Beyond the World Tour’ at Indigo at the O2 in London on 30th April.

We all know about the crushing impact Covid had on the music industry. Unfortunately for Tokio Hotel, they were forced to stop their world tour in 2020. As far as I know, theirs is notably the most significant delay I have heard of when resuming touring due to those exceptional circumstances.

As they take a look back over fifteen years of success as a band with a set list jam-packed with fan favourites. They will also perform many of the new songs from their brand new album “ 2001 “.

Listen on Apple Music

It’s fitting, therefore, to take a look at “ When We Were Younger ,” one of the band’s most recent releases. The track is a particularly euphoric production piece that not only showcases Tokio Hotel’s distinctive blend of synth-pop with a rock edge. The song lyrics are pure nostalgia. In the accompanying music video, the band gives viewers an inside look at tour life and glimpses behind the scenes of the pop star lifestyle.

“Cause some things never change. We’re feeling out of place. Our hearts still beat the same. From Berlin to LA. The same stars we’re under, like when we were younger, like when we were younger.” (song lyrics)

“ Beyond The World ” European Tour dates are:

April 30, 2023, London May 2, 2023, Brussels May 4, 2023, Frankfurt May 6, 2023, Arnhem May 7, 2023, Cologne May 9, 2023, Stuttgart May 10, 2023, Miland May 12, 2023, Barcelona May 14, 2023, Lyon May 15, 2023, Paris May 17, 2023, Leipzig May 18, 2023, Hamburg May 19, 2023, Berlin May 22, 2023, Katowice

CHANGE OF LOCATION For logistical reasons, Tokio Hotel will play in Klub Studio in Krakow instead of MCK in Katowice. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by changing the location of the concert and at the same time we would like to inform you that all tickets purchased for the concert, which was originally supposed to take place in 2021, as well as on the new date in 2022 and 2023 at the MCK in Katowice, remain valid for the band's performance in Krakow Studio Club.

TOKIO HOTEL „Beyond The World Tour“:

Tokio Hotel have always stood for more than just their music: For more than one and a half decades Tom, Georg, Gustav & Bill have created their very own universe & brought it to life with every single song, music video, public appearance and - above all - with their spectacular live shows.

In 2019 and early 2020, the band played 43 shows across Europe & the USA as part of their extensive „Melancholic Paradise“ tour, that unfortunately couldn’t be completed due to the worldwide pandemic. Reason enough to finally look ahead: With their brand new „Beyond The World“ tour the band announces 16 new shows throug-hout Europe & Russia.

After more than 10 million records sold in 68 countries as well as countless awards across the globe Tokio Hotel are still far away from reaching the end of their truly unique journey. A journey that started in the small city of Magdeburg, Germany, and quickly developed into a global phenomenon.

But the outstanding success never was a reason for Tokio Hotel to rest on their laurels: Quite the opposite - song after song, album after album, show after show Tom, Georg, Gustav & Bill have always shifted their boundaries and kept extending the Tokio Hotel universe.

During numerous world tours the band has repeatedly set new standards in terms of their fulminant live performances. Brilliant sound productions, astonishing stage sets and sensa-tional costumes form integral parts of their incomparable top-notch live shows.

Tokio Hotel are currently in Berlin to work on their sixth, yet untitled studio album.

After already releasing the songs  "Melancholic Paradise", "When It Rains It Pours" and „Chateau" in 2019 their brand new single „Berlin" - another precursor of the project – is a dynamic piano ballad, thoughtful and melancholic, but also as stirring and euphoric as the city itself.

"The time from the beginning of the pandemic feels like an eternity, for our fans as well as for us. We are incredibly grateful for our fans’ loyalty and can't wait to finally get back on stage and celebrate with them," the band explains. "We've been working on the show’s set up for months now and are fine-tuning the setlist - because in addition to the songs of the last 15 years, we also want to perform lots of new songs from our upcoming album."
