GOLDENTOURS INTERNATIONAL

Operating from 01 April till 31 October 2024 - Departure from Sorrento

In Anacapri you can visit the famous Villa San Michele, which was bought and restored in 1895 by Swedish doctor Axel Munthe, who fell in love with the ruins of an ancient chapel, consisting of a few crumbling walls. While doing restoration work in the adjacent vineyard the remains of an ancient Roman villa came to light, he decorated the new house with numerous archaeological remains that may be observed in the original construction of Munthe. The restoration lasted many years. The story of his life is told in an autobiography, he wanted to call it "The Story of San Michele”, which also contains all phases of the restoration and it was published in 1929, and proved to be one of the most read books in the twentieth century. Upon his death in Rome in 1949, Munthe left the house to the Swedish state. Today it is owned by a Swedish foundation that has transformed it into a museum where, in the summer, beautiful classical music concerts are held. Free time in Anacapri for lunch, and those who want to shop will be spoiled for choice given the wide variety of typical products and clothing etc. .. For nature and landscape lovers there will be a nice opportunity to get the chair lift that arrives at 600 mt. around the summit of Monte Solaro, the highest point of the island. Continue to the famous "Piazzetta" of Capri, meeting place of VIPs and vantage point of great beauty. Then you can have free time for shopping or go for a short walk to the Gardens of Augustus, which are very relaxing, and also have a breathtaking views, after crossing the streets of Capri, full of shops and sparkling windows. The gardens were commissioned in the '30s by the German steel magnate Krupp, who also wanted to achieve, a masterpiece of engineering made of winding roads above the sea, linking the gardens and the Certosa at Marina Piccola .You will return to the port at Marina Grande, time and weather permitting, you can enjoy the beauty of the coast of the island with a boat ride or visit the Blue Grotto which is known throughout the world for its size, and for its intense blue and silvery white water reflecting immerse objects. To enter the Blue Grotto you have to climb in a small rowboat, lying on the bottom, you cross the narrow gap opened in the natural rock. It is impossible to do on days when the wind blows south-west or northwest. The entrance to the Blue Grotto is a small gap in the rock wall, about 2 meters wide and high, which is about 1 meter above sea level. Abandoning the oars the rower pushes the boat into clinging to a side chain on the ceiling of the entrance. The interior is all light blue, once called the Blue Dome, it has an average height from 7 to 14 feet, the erosion of the cavity is about 60 meters long and 25 wide. The cave continues with the Hall of Pillars, three communicating branches that converge in the Hall of Names, so named for the many visitors signatures affixed to the walls, and the Passage of Corrosion, to the last accessible point, the Hall of Corrosion . The blue colour of the Blue Grotto is due to the fact that daylight enters through an underwater window that appears right under the entrance, thus undergoing a change of colour, which absorbs the red colour and lets blue filter through. It is believed that the interior of the Blue Grotto in Roman times, the time of Tiberius, was used as a marine ninfeo, there have been those who have imagined it as a place where the Nereids or Syrens and those who believed it was the kingdom of devils, intimidating anyone who dared enter. In the afternoon return to the port of Sorrento and subsequent transfer by minibus to your hotel where you can reflect on why Capri is defined as one of the most beautiful islands in the world!!!

Capri or Anacapri?

Should you choose Capri or Anacapri?

Capri or Anacapri?

Capri or Anacapri? It can be hard to choose between the two towns when deciding where to book a hotel on Capri or where to focus your sightseeing if you're planning a day trip to the island from Sorrento , Naples , or the Amalfi Coast .

The island of Capri is divided into two municipalities: Capri and Anacapri . The two towns themselves are similar in many ways, but also have a number of differences that make them distinct. Here's all you need to know to decide which to choose when deciding between Capri and Anacapri !

The towns of Capri and Anacapri are located about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) apart and there is a local bus that runs between them, taking about 10 minutes to make the trip. The road is particularly panoramic as it hugs the towering cliffs. Tickets cost EUR 2 and buses depart every 15 minutes.

Anacapri: Quiet Countryside

Capri is most often associated with glitz and glamour, home to elegant designer boutiques and surrounded by luxurious yachts moored just offshore. But there is another side of the island, with a slower pace and calmer atmosphere, that offers the possibility of discovering the island from a more laidback, authentic point of view. For hiking enthusiasts or fans of history and art—or simply those looking for a quiet spot to spend a holiday relaxing—Anacapri and the surrounding countryside is ideal.

The town of Anacapri , in particular, is a sleepy, timeless that spot sits on the highest point of the island , thus its name. The municipality is set on the slopes of Mount Solaro, the peak of which offers spectacular views across the island and can be reached on foot via a moderately challenging hiking trail or simply with the chairlift (not recommended for those who suffer from fear of heights!)

Less expensive than the town of Capri, Anacapri is perfect for those who want a casual holiday far from the chaos of the crowds and nightlife for which Capri is famous. There is a wide variety of restaurants and artisan workshops in town making everything from leather sandals and fabric to ceramics, coral jewelry, and other local crafts.

There are a number of walking and hiking trails for every skill level that set off from Anacapri, in including the path to the Migliera Scenic Overlook and the Trail of the Forts .

A Thousand Steps to the Port The famed Scala Fenicia (Phoenician Steps...though they were actually built by the Greeks!) sets off from Anacapri, running from the town center to the Marina Grande port below. There are 921 steep steps covering a staircase that stretches 1.7 kilometers (1 mile). We suggest taking on the steps only for those who are particularly fit, as they can be a challenge even if you are headed downhill.

Fans of art and culture will find plenty of treasures to explore in Anacapri. Take in the sweeping views from the house-museum of Axel Munthe, the eccentric and captivating Villa San Michele ; as well as Casa Rossa, one of the most unique and fascinating buildings on the island. The monumental churches of Santa Sofia and San Michele Arcangelo are also worth a visit. The latter is known for its stunning historic majolica ceramic floor that depicts the Garden of Eden and "original sin."

The Tops Sights in Anacapri

A number of Capri's most iconic sights are located in the municipality of Anacapri . The most famous, of course, is the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) , followed by the picturesque Punta Carena Lighthouse , one of the oldest in Europe and the second-largest in Italy after the Lanterna Lighthouse of Genoa.

Both these sights can be easily reached by bus from the center of Anacapri via two different bus routes, each of which takes about 10 minutes to reach its destination. Both the lighthouse and Gradola, the location of the Blue Grotto, can also be reached by taxi, scooter, or private car service directly from either the port of Marina Grande or the Piazzetta in Capri Town, as well as other locations across the island.

Anacapri is also an excellent choice for families with children , as the town has a nice playground, the shady Damecuta pine grove (where the remains of an ancient Roman villa are also located), outdoor play spaces on Mount Solaro, and a number of pedestrian-only areas in the town center where kids can walk without the danger of traffic.

Capri: VIP Style and Nightlife

Lively and elegant, Capri is ideal for those looking for a glamorous vacation destination with a VIP atmosphere and plenty of nightlife. Capri Town and the surrounding areas are generally more crowded as most clubs, restaurants, and luxury hotels are located here, as well as designer boutiques sporting the most famous names in Italian and international fashion.

Capri is also home to the island's only port and the iconic Piazzetta , the focal point of the island's social life set beneath the picturesque clock tower. Here, café tables are crowded with Hollywood stars, famous athletes, and other celebrities drawn to the island for its “La Dolce Vita” and paparazzi cachet.

You can also explore the island via a number of scenic trails from Capri, from the easy walk to the Tragara scenic overlook or the longer hike to Pizzolungo.

Beaches in Capri Unlike Anacapri, which only has rocky coves and beach clubs set up on platforms above the water, Capri is home to the few true beaches on the island, including Marina Grande, Marina Piccola, and Palazzo a Mare. Keep in mind, however, that even these beaches are quite small and lined with pebbles and stones, not sand.

More Than Glam

In addition to the glitterati draw of the local clubs, Capri hosts a number of must-see sights and attractions for those visiting the island, including the panoramic Gardens of Augustus; the Charterhouse of San Giacomo; and the Roman ruins of Villa Jovis, the largest of 12 pleasure palaces that Emperor Tiberius had built on Capri. We also suggest a stop to take in the lovely Villa Lysis, an Art Nouveau residence built in 1904 by the Parisian nobleman Jacques Fersen.

Capri is also where you can admire the island's most well-known feature, the towering Faraglioni sea rock formations. And what's the best way to take them in? A sunset cruise with a Prosecco toast on board!

Capri or Anacapri: A Quick Overview

Anacapri is best if you:

Prefer a quieter destination with fewer crowds

Love walking and hiking

Enjoy artisan workshops more than fashion boutiques

Are traveling on a budget

Capri is best if you:

Love a glamorous atmosphere and want to party until dawn

Plan on spending a significant amount of time on the beach

Are a shopaholic, especially high fashion

Can splurge on a luxury break

Getting around Capri

Wondering how to get around the Island of Capri? Here are all the methods of transportation available on the island: public bus, taxi, boat... on foot.

Getting around Capri

Non-resident vehicles are prohibited from Easter to the beginning of November, and regardless are not particularly of use as the centers of Capri town and Anacapri are completely closed to traffic and there is very little public parking available.

The main connections: From Marina Grande to the Piazzetta: funicular (cable car) From Marina Grande to Anacapri: bus or funicular (to Capri town) + bus From Capri to Anacapri: bus To the Blue Grotto: boat from Marina Grande or bus from Anacapri

How to purchase tickets to public transportation

There are three public transport companies on the island of Capri: the funicular and two bus companies. There is no daily pass that is valid for all three, so you need to buy individual tickets for each ride.

Bus tickets: EUR 2.40

Funicular tickets: EUR 2.40

Daily ticket: EUR 7.20 (plus EUR 1 for deposit)

Baggage supplement: EUR 2.40

Passengers on Capri's public transportation are allowed one piece of luggage per person, weighing a maximum of 10 kg and measuring 23cm x 30cm x 50cm (roughly the size of a carry-on bag). To transport your bag, you must pay a supplement. Bags larger than the maximum allowance can be transported by porter service or taxi. All baby strollers and carriages must be folded before boarding buses or the funicular.

In addition to the ticket office in Marina Grande, you can purchase tickets at the Capri town terminal located in Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria (one minute from the Piazzetta) and in Anacapri in Piazza della Pace. Tickets can also be purchased at newsstands.

Funicular (cable car)

The funicular runs between the port in Marina Grande and the Piazzetta in Capri town above, taking just a few minutes to complete the trip. The Capri stop is behind the Piazzetta. Courses run every 15 minutes (for example: 9:00, 9:15, 9:30...), though during the most crowded times the funicular runs non-stop. As soon as you arrive at the port, purchase your tickets at the ticket office to the right on the pier. The trip only lasts 4 minutes , though you can often find long lines of passengers waiting to board at Marina Grande, as only 70 passengers can ride at one time. If the line is long and you are travelling with a small group, it may be worth it to hire a taxi. The fares are fixed at €17 for up to 4 passengers and €20 for up to 7 passengers. There are often long lines to take the funicular back down the hill to Marina Grande, as well, so you can walk down : the stairs begin at the Piazzetta and lead to the port in about 15 minutes by foot. Otherwise, there are buses up to Capri town that depart from the stop on Via Marina Grande or pier 21.

The funicular runs from early morning to 10:00pm , after which there is a substitute bus route. This service closes during the months of January and February, and is substituted by a bus route.

Transportation information Ticket: EUR 2.40 You must pay a supplement for luggage and pets. Departures: every 15 minutes Funicular Schedule

Public Buses

Public buses on the Italian island of Capri are minibuses, carrying just a few dozen people at once. The most popular line runs between Capri and Anacapri, but there are routes across the island. Usually, buses depart every 15 to 20 minutes, though more often in high season.

The main bus routes Capri - Anacapri: 15 minutes Capri - Marina Piccola: 10 minutes Marina Grande - Anacapri: 25 minutes Marina Piccola - Anacapri: 25 minutes Anacapri - Blue Grotto: 20 minutes Anacapri - Punta Carena Lighthouse: 20 minutes Bus Schedules

There is often a long line waiting to board in Anacapri's Piazza Vittoria, near the chairlift to Mount Solaro. To be sure to get a seat on the bus to Capri, all you need to do is walk about 100 meters up Viale Tommaso de Tommaso to the preceding bus stop and board there.

If you don't suffer from vertigo and you'd like to admire the spectacular view, sit on the right side of the bus running uphill from Capri to Anacapri.

Many parts of the island of Capri are easily reached on foot, especially if they are downhill! When the island gets crowded, it's often more enjoyable to take a leisurely walk to your destination than to wait in the long line at the bus stop under the hot sun.

Here are the main alternative walking routes:

Capri - Marina Grande: 15 minutes (down flights of stairs the entire way)

Anacapri - Marina Grande: 30 minutes down the 900 steps of the Phoenician Steps.

Capri - Marina Piccola: 20 minutes down the steps of Via Mulo

A fun way to get around Capri is by taxi. All the taxis on the island are open-top and can fit up to 7 passengers. If you are travelling with a small group, you'll find that hiring a taxi is not that much more expensive than using the public bus. Most fares are fixed, and drivers also offer daily rates so you can have a taxi available all day to explore the island. This is the perfect solution for those visiting Capri for just one day, and don't want to waste time standing in line at the bus stop. Daily rates must be agreed upon with each individual driver.

Do you want to call a taxi? Taxi Anacapri, Piazza Vittoria - Tel. +39 081 8371175 Taxi Capri, Piazza Martiri D'Ungheria - Tel. +39 081 8376657

In high season, non-resident vehicles are prohibited from circulating on the island, so for those who would like to explore the island independently, renting a scooter on Capri can be the ideal solution. The main scooter hire agencies are in Marina Grande right next to the pier, and in the towns of Capri and Anacapri.

The Mount Solaro Chairlift

Monte Solaro is the highest point on the Island of Capri (589 meters above sea level) and the peak can be reached easily using the chairlift in Anacapri . The trip uphill takes 12 minutes, and has beautiful views over the historic center of the town of Anacapri from a unique vantage point, passing directly above the rooftops, surrounding fields, and woods , almost touching the treetops with your feet.

You can reach the chairlift by climbing the stairs from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri . The chairlift runs relatively close to the ground, so can even be taken by those who suffer from vertigo.

Mount Solaro Chairlift Hours From May to October: 9:30 am - 5:00 pm From November to February: 10:30 am - 3:30 pm From March to April: 9:30am - 4:00pm Price: EUR 9 one way, EUR 12 round trip

Getting Around by Sea

Capri is a steep island, and getting around almost always means winding your way up- and downhill. This is why it is often faster and easier to get from one place to another along the coastline by boat.

During your sail, you can stop for a meal in one of the many restaurants along the coast specialized in light and refreshing salads and fish and seafood dishes.

Boats, with or without skipper, can be rented in Marina Grande.

Boat tours for the Blue Grotto also depart from Marina Grande. Boats for the beach clubs beneath the Faraglioni sea stacks (La Fontelina and Da Luigi) depart from Marina Piccola.

You can also tour the Island of Capri by sea with an organized group tour departing from the docks at Marina Grand. A boat tour of the island lasts a couple of hours and can include a stop at the Blue Grotto, where you'll be rowed inside in traditional wooden boats.

Those who arrive on Capri aboard their private boat can dock at the Marina of Capri , which provides all marina and shore services. Because of the high number of requests during the summer months, we recommend booking a boat slip in advance .
