Savannah Taste Experience's Port City Food Tour takes visitors to a half-dozen eateries to sample everything from South African-inspired cuisine to ice cream. Andrew Low House Museum

The lovely brick Andrew Low House combines Grecian details with elements of the Italian Villa style and boasts one of Savannah’s most stunning ironwork balconies. A shuttered piazza overlooks a beautiful brick-walled garden in the rear of the home. The front garden remains much as it did when first planted, with two hourglass-shaped flowerbeds. Handsome inside as well as the out, the Andrew Low House features spacious rooms decorated with beautiful plaster cornices and carved woodwork.

New York architect, John Norris, designed and built this lovely home in 1848-1849 for Andrew Low, a wealthy cotton factor, who came to Savannah from Scotland when he was only 16 years old. He started working in his uncle’s cotton firm and later became a partner and later director of the Savannah operation. In 1843 he married Sarah Cecil Hunter. Unfortunately, Andrew’s wife and 4-year old son died before the house was complete. Five years later, Andrew married Mary Cowper Stiles, daughter of William Henry Stiles, United States Minister to Austria. During the Civil War, Andrew Low was imprisoned at Fort Warren in Boston harbor on suspicion of collaboration with the Confederacy.

The Andrew Low House was host to several important visitors over the years. One such visitor was English author, William Makepeace Thackery, who visited in 1853 and 1856 while on lecture tours.

Know that I write from the most comfortable quarters I have ever had in the United States. In a tranquil old city, wide stretched, tree-planted, with a few cows and carriages rolling through the sandy road, a red river with a tranquil little fleet of merchant men taking cargo, and tranquil ware-houses barricaded with packs of cotton; a famous good dinner, breakfast, etc. and leisure all morning to think and do and sleep and read as I like. The only place I stay in the United States where I can get these comforts — all free gratis — is in the house of my friend Andrew Low of the great house of A. Low and Co, Cotton Dealers, brokers. In 1870, Robert E. Lee, former commander of the Army of Northern Virginia paid a visit to Savannah with his daughter, Agnes. The general left the train to face one of the largest crowds that ever assembled to welcome him. Cheer followed cheer. As soon as the crowd would permit, Lee was driven to the home of General Lawton, at the corner of York and Lincoln Streets. Later in the evening he was taken to the Andrew Low House, where he was to sleep.

The Lowes invited some of Lee’s old comrades to dinner on April 2. General Joseph E. Johnson, General Andrew Lawton and General J. F. Gilmer came to pay their respects. It was the first time Lee had seen Johnson since the war. Before leaving Savannah, Lee paid a visit to Joseph Johnston, who was then living at 105 E. Oglethorpe Avenue. At some point during his stay, Lee and Johnston were photographed together at Ryan’s, a local photography studio in downtown Savannah. The familiar picture shows them, “grizzled, old and feeble,” seated on opposite sides of a small table.

Andrew Low’s son, William Mackay Low, married Juliette Gordon in 1886. Juliette, commonly known as Daisy, moved in the family home on Lafayette Square. It was here that the widowed Juliette founded the Girl Scouts of America. Daisy had become friends with General Robert Baden-Powell, former of the Boys Scouts of England. Baden-Powell and his sister, who had formed a society of “Girl Guides” in England, inspired Daisy to found a similar organization in the United States. She formed two such groups of girls in Savannah in 1912. Members of the Girl Guides, later known as the Girl Scouts, held their meetings in Daisy’s carriage house. Juliette Gordon Low died in 1927 and bequeathed the carriage house to the Savannah Girl Scouts. The National Society of the Colonial Dames in Georgia purchased the Andrew Low House in 1928. After painstaking restoration, the Colonial Dames used the home as their headquarters, and officially opened the home to the public in 1952.

Davenport House Museum

Tours start every 30 minutes (on the half hour), are limited to 12 people and last approximately 70 minutes.

The Isaiah Davenport House is one of the best examples of Federal-Style architecture in Savannah. The simple but elegant exterior was constructed of English brick and brownstone and features an ornamental iron railing and handsome double entry stairway.

The interior of the home has been authentically restored and features beautiful woodwork, original plaster-work and a hanging staircase. Filled with furnishings of the period, visitors are able to get a glimpse of what life was like in Savannah in the 1820s.

A native of Rhode Island, Isaiah Davenport, arrived in Savannah before 1807 after completing his apprentice as a builder. He soon became known as one of Savannah’s most famous and prosperous builders and built a number of brick houses in the late Georgian and Federal styles, all with high basements made necessary by the dusty unpaved streets of Savannah.

Davenport’s heirs sold the Davenport house to planter William E. Baynard in 1840, and remained in the hands of that family until 1955. Unfortunately, the house was a run-down tenement building by the 1930’s and destined for destruction in 1955 to make way for a parking lot. The historic home was saved by seven Savannah society ladies who raised $22,500 to purchase the home. This effort was the first act of the Historic Savannah Foundation, which would be responsible for saving and preserving many of Savannah’s historic sites.

Georgia State Railroad Museum

Georgia State Railroad Museum is a historic site featuring the most complete antebellum railroad of its kind in the world and is located at the old Central of Georgia Railway Savannah Shops and Terminal Facilities in downtown Savannah. The museum gives visitors the opportunity to engage in interactive experiences, such as participating on the handcar, touring the historic railcars and taking a guided site tour by train which showcases our museum’s fully operational turntable. Green Meldrim House Tour

Notice: This house is operated by St. Johns Church and can be closed at any time for any reason for church related functions.

General William Tecumseh Sherman used the house as headquarters when the Federal army occupied Savannah during the Civil War, upon the invitation of Mr. Green. It was at this time (December, 1864) that General Sherman sent his famous telegram to President Lincoln offering him the City of Savannah as a Christmas gift. In 1976, the house was designated a National Historic Landmark by the United States Department of the Interior.

Mr. Green was not possessed of great wealth when he arrived in Savannah. He became a cotton merchant and ship owner. By 1850, he had amassed a fortune sufficient to build the most elaborate house in Savannah at a cost of $93,000. According to Green family records, $40,000 of the cost of the building materials including flagstones, laths, planks and bricks, were brought from England as ballast on Mr. Green’s ships. Recent restorations have revealed that the bricks were actually made at a foundry in Macon, GA. The Green-Meldrim House is one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture to be found in the South. The house was constructed in the early 1850’s as the residence of Mr. Charles Green, an Englishman who came to Savannah in 1833.

The architect for the house was Mr. John S. Norris of New York. Mr. Norris was in Savannah from 1846–1861 and during that time he designed not only the Green-Meldrim House but also the Custom House and numerous other fine residences. There are many unusual architectural features throughout the house. The front entrance has three sets of doors. The heavy outer double doors fold in and form a small closet on either side of the entrance. Of the other two sets, one has glass panels to give light and the third set is louvered for ventilation.

The woodwork on the main floor is American black walnut, beautifully carved, and the elaborate crown mouldings or cornices are stucco-duro. The doorknobs, hinges, keyhole escutcheons and covers are silver plated. The hanging consoles in the hall have supporting brackets or carved wood, while the ornate aprons are of papier-mache

There are marble mantles in each room in the house, the two in the double drawing rooms being of Carrara marble. Other original adornments in these rooms are the matching chandeliers and the large mirrors in gold-leaf frames which were brought from Austria.

The graceful curved stairway with skylight above is a feature found in other houses designed by Mr. Norris. Also of special significance are the oriel windows on the east side of the house.

The Garden:

The covered porch, on three sides of the house, is surrounded by ornate ironwork. The planting in the garden is not authentic to the period of the house, but after the removal of layers of soil it is believed that the pattern of the original flower beds was discovered and has been restored. The former kitchens, servants’ quarters and stable have been converted into the Rectory of St. John’s Church.

History of Ownership:

The house has been owned by only two families and St. John’s Church. After the death of Mr. Green in 1881, it became the property of his son, Edward Moon Green. On July 14, 1892, the house was purchased by Judge Peter W. Meldrim. On December 30, 1943, the Meldrim family sold this historic treasure to St. John’s, thus ensuring its preservation.

Harper Fowlkes House Tour

This Greek Revival mansion located in Savannah’s historic district was built in 1842, and graciously opens their doors for tours. The house is beautifully furnished with antiques, yet continues to retain the feel of a warm and inviting home.

The Harper-Fowlkes House has served as the headquarters for the Society of the Cincinnati in the State of Georgia since Alida Harper-Fowlkes bequeathed the house to the Society in 1985.

The exterior and interior architectural features of the home have intrigued students and travelers from all over the world. One of the featured treasures of the house is the elliptical opening viewed from the lower and upper levels of the entry and stairwell.

Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace

The Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace is offering guided tours exploring the fascinating life and world-changing legacy of Juliette Gordon Low, Founder of the Girls Scouts, through stories, art, and artifacts held in her childhood home.

Please allow at least an hour for your visit, so you can fully enjoy the tour, garden, and museum store.

A tour of the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace provides an exciting look into the history of our remarkable founder and her home, as well as a glimpse into a movement that is still building girls into strong women of courage, confidence, and character over 100 years later.

During your visit to the Birthplace you will be guided on a journey through the life of Juliette Gordon Low. Original and period furnishings adorn seven spacious rooms with high ceilings. You will see unique architectural features, including elaborately carved millwork, decorative plaster ceilings, and the impressive staircase with its curved mahogany rail. Numerous works of art, including many pieces created by Daisy herself, are on display throughout the house.

You may browse the garden independently before or after your tour. Be sure to look for the monogrammed gates that are believed to be forged in part by Daisy herself. Before you head back out into beautiful Savannah, you’ll want to visit our shop for great local gifts, items made by girls and women around the world, and Girl Scout merchandise.

Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum

Visit one of the world’s most powerful museum experiences, the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. Located only minutes from historic downtown Savannah, where the Eighth Air Force was activated in 1942, the 90,000-square-foot museum is dedicated to preserving the history and stories of the Eighth Air Force, the “greatest air armada of all time.” Hear the unforgettable stories of bravery, experience a bomber mission and briefing, and see the ongoing restoration of the World War II B-17 Flying Fortress “City of Savannah” inside the Museum’s Combat Gallery. The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force is an experience not to be missed while visiting Savannah!

We are pleased to be able to offer group tours of the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force. These tours can be self-guided or guided by our incredible Museum Docents. If you choose for your group to tour self-guided (on your own), you will want to plan on a minimum of two hours. Guided tours are two hours in length. If you have limited time, just let us know and we will tailor a shorter tour for your needs.

The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force is home to a traditional English Pub. You can enjoy lunch there, Monday thru Friday from 11 am to 2 pm, with food prepared by our in-house restaurant, Miss Sophie’s Marketplace.

Old Fort Jackson

Old Fort Jackson is a must-see National Historic Landmark offering daily cannon firings and exciting interactive programs for adults, kids and families! Only minutes away from historic downtown Savannah, you can experience unique views of Savannah’s riverfront and walk on the grounds of one of the oldest brick fortifications on the East Coast.

This fortification is located on the Savannah River, just 3 miles east of the city. It was constructed in 1808 as part of President Thomas Jefferson’s Second System coastal defense initiative and named after Revolutionary War patriot James Jackson. This brick fort was constructed over an old earthen battery from the Revolutionary War which had been called “Mud Fort.” Soldiers were stationed at Fort James Jackson to guard Savannah during the War of 1812. Following the War of 1812, two periods of construction continued expansion of the fort from the 1840s-1850s, prior to the outbreak of the American Civil War.

Local Confederate militia units occupied the fort at the start of the Civil War in 1861. In 1862, it became the headquarters for Savannah’s river defenses after the fall of Fort Pulaski. In 1864 the Confederate troops quickly evacuated Fort Jackson just prior to the arrival of federal troops under the leadership of General William Tecumesh Sherman after his infamous “March to the Sea,” leaving Fort Jackson under control of federal troops. The last American soldiers to be stationed at Fort Jackson were members of the 55th Massachusetts, an African- American unit of the Federal Army.

The War Department abandoned the fort in 1905 and the state of Georgia reopened it in 1965 as a maritime museum. After the state decided to close the museum in 1975, the newly formed nonprofit Coastal Heritage Society approached the State in 1976 asking permission to re-open and operate the site, which was granted. The historic site was now referred to as Old Fort Jackson. In 1978, Fort Jackson and CHS came under the leadership of Scott W. Smith. Operation continued to grow with modest success as did development of educational programming for regular guests and student field trips.

Currently, Old Fort Jackson has a successful model of independent operation and a solid reputation of delivering high-quality, engaging educational programming for booked groups. This program offering has been expanded to regular operation for daily museum guests and includes cannon, musket firings and other interactive & hands-on activities.

Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters

Built as a beautiful Regency style mansion in 1819, the Owens-Thomas House, along with its adjacent gardens, carriage house, and slave quarters, allows visitors to explore the complicated relationships between the most and least powerful people in the city of Savannah in the early 19th century.

History of the Richardson-Owens-Thomas House

In November 1816, work began on the new home of banker, shipping merchant, and slave trader Richard Richardson and his wife, Frances. The home was designed by English architect (and relative to Richardson by marriage) William Jay, but was constructed by builder John Retan and the team of free and enslaved men in his charge. The site also included a two-sided privy and a building located on the east end of the lot, which was divided into a carriage house and slave quarters.

The Richardsons moved into the home with their six children and nine enslaved men, women, and children in January 1819. Unfortunately for the Richardsons, the next three years saw steady decreases in their prosperity, including the financial Panic of 1819, a yellow fever epidemic, a fire that destroyed half the city, and the death of Frances and two of the children. By 1822, Richardson decided to sell the house and move to Louisiana, where he had family and business interests. He had been shipping enslaved people, mostly children, from Savannah to New Orleans for years.

By 1824, the Bank of the United States owned the house, which they leased to Mary Maxwell as a boarding house. The Marquis de Lafayette was a guest of Mrs. Maxwell when he visited Savannah in March 1825 as part of his whirlwind tour of the United States for the 50th anniversary of the American Revolution.

In 1830, George Welshman Owens, then mayor of Savannah, purchased the property at auction for $10,000. Owens, who was also a lawyer, planter, and politician, moved in with his wife, Sarah, and their six children in 1833. Over the years, Owens kept nine to 15 enslaved people on the property and held almost 400 men, women, and children in bondage on his plantations.

The last Owens descendant to live in the home was George Owens’ granddaughter, Margaret Gray Thomas. When Thomas passed away in 1951 with no direct heirs, she willed the house to the Telfair Academy of Arts and Sciences to be run as a house museum in honor of her grandfather, George Owens, and her father, Dr. James Gray Thomas. The site opened to the public in 1954.

Carriage House

Orientation Gallery

The south half of this building originally housed horses and carriages on the first floor with a hay loft on the floor above. Beginning in;November 2018, the first level of this building will house our Orientation Gallery. Exhibits in this space help put the story of the site into the larger context of local, regional, and national history. The site of the original hay loft now houses The Loft, a workspace for Telfair’s historical interpreters to study primary documents, examine archaeological artifacts, and research our sites’ history.

Slave Quarters

The north half of the building contains the original slave quarters for the site. This two-story structure was composed of three rooms on each level. Nine to 15 enslaved people, about half of whom were children, lived and worked on the site at any given time between 1819 and the end of the Civil War. Once the war ended, the space became servants’ quarters, housing many of the same people.

Now these these wonderfully preserved spaces offer new interactive exhibits to help visitors understand the day-to-day lives of the enslaved people who lived and worked in the space, as well as the most unique architectural feature of the house, the indoor plumbing.

Pinpoint Heritage Museum

Pin Point Heritage Museum is located in the former A.S. Varn & Son Oyster and Crab Factory. The community was founded in 1896 by freed slaves after the Civil War. The former factory has been transformed into an educational center for visitors to authentically learn about the Gullah/Geechee culture directly from residents who grew up in the small, close-knit community. Guests can discover these unique lifeways, from daily life to religion, language and food.

Prohibition Museum

Savannah History Museum is located in the former historic Central of Georgia Railroad’s passenger station. The museum walks guests through the city’s history from 1733, spanning the American Revolution and Civil War, all the way to modern day Savannah. Many exhibits highlight Savannah’s musical, cultural and artistic contributions including the famous bench from the movie Forrest Gump. Located just across the street is Battlefield Memorial Park, which presents visitors with a free memorial to those who fought in the 1779 Battle of Savannah, second bloodiest battle of the American Revolution. This park marks the exact location where approximately 800 troops died or were wounded.

Savannah Square Pops

Treat yourself to a gourmet popsicle from this fun and one-of-a-kind shop. Featured by Duff Goldman (Food Network Chef, Ace of Cakes) as one of his favorite sweet treats in the nation!

Each of their pops are named after the one of the 22 historic Savannah squares. Some fan favorites are Calhoun Square (Blackberry Lemonade), Franklin Square (Strawberry Balsamic) and Pulaski Square (Salted Caramel, dipped in dark chocolate and rolled in pretzel pieces). Their philosophy on ingredients is to use the best and the least. The Key Lime Pie Pop has the most ingredients, with fresh squeezed lime juice, fresh heavy cream, buttermilk, milk, graham crackers, raw cane sugar, and Sea Salt. Extra care is given to several of their pops to make them as beautiful as they are delicious. The Telfair Square Pop, for example, features a whole Oreo embedded in the side, and the Wright Square pop showcases a perfect slice of kiwi. This isn’t easy to do, but it’s part of that extra mile They go to make the product special.

Telfair Academy

The Telfair Academy is just short walk away from the Jepson Center, but that short distance covers nearly 200 years of history. The stately two-story mansion, designed by William Jay in the Neoclassical Regency style and built in 1819, is just three historic squares away from Jay’s other masterpiece, the Owens-Thomas House. The Telfair Academy contains three nineteenth-century period rooms and houses nineteenth- and twentieth-century American and European art from the museum’s permanent collection including paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and decorative arts.

Yes, Savannah is known as a safe city. The historic district is very safe along with the Tybee Island beach area. As in every metropolitan area there are areas that are not recommended for Visitors, however you would have no reason to visit since attractions and hotels are not located in those area. 

It’s always best to be “street-smart” and be aware of your surroundings no matter where you are in an unfamiliar city. Don’t get overly intoxicated or walk alone at night and ask hotel staff of areas to avoid if concerns persist.

Yes, Savannah has Tybee Island beach which is located 20 minutes by car from Savannah’s downtown district.

Not necessarily since downtown Savannah has a free trolley that transports visitors around the Historic District. If you would like to visit the beaches or plantations then transportation will be needed. Savannah does have Uber and Lyft service.

A Complete One-Day Itinerary for a Walking Tour of Savannah, Georgia

Experience the best sights of the Historic District in this walking tour of Savannah!

The historic district in Savannah, Georgia is easily explored with one full day in the city. We have visited this area in every season and love walking through the squares and past the harbor. What keeps us coming back to this area year after year are the oak tree-lined streets dripping in Spanish moss, delicious southern-style food offerings, and the slower pace of the city. 

Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and has its share of some of the darker parts of our country’s history. This is a great town for ghost stories, along with St. Augustine, Florida and Charleston, South Carolina . But this area that was once steeped in historical battles is now filled with parks, cobblestone streets, and wide open spaces. Follow along on our one day walking tour of Savannah!

Take a Self-Guided Walking Tour of Savannah's Historic District

Even though the entire historic district is only two square miles in size, this walking tour of Savannah covers about 3 ½ miles and takes a good portion of the day depending on stops. You will reach your step goal with this one day itinerary but don’t fret, there are plenty of places to stop, sit, sip, eat, and relax. Savannah is nicknamed the “Hostess City of the South”, and the picturesque historic downtown is easily walkable.  

If you don’t want to spend the day walking through Savannah, another great way to see the city is with the hop-on hop-off trolley . We have done these tours in St. Augustine and in Key West, and they are a great way to see the best sights if you have mobility issues, if you are traveling with children who can’t walk very far, or if you would prefer a guided tour. 

Start your walking tour at Forsyth Park

Forsyth Park is a huge 30-acre green space serving as the ultimate gathering spot for both locals and visitors. Offering wide open fields, meandering paved pathways, tennis and basketball courts, fragrant gardens, and even an amphitheater , the park is surrounded by towering live oaks and marks the beginning of Savannah’s historic district. While strolling through the park we encountered musicians, artisans, and exercise enthusiasts running, walking, and even doing yoga in the park. 

Tip : There is a convenient parking garage called the Liberty Parking Deck located at 301 W. Liberty Street. This is the perfect starting and ending point to this walking tour of Savannah, right in the middle of all of the best sights.

The fountain at Forsyth Park is one of the most photographed places in Savannah. Installed in 1858 in the northern section of the park and modeled after fountains found in Paris, this is the famous fountain that is dyed green during the city’s over-the-top St. Paddy’s Day celebrations .

Unfortunately when we visited the fountain was under repair. But honestly, we saw so many other beautifully ornate fountains on our walking tour that we weren’t too bummed! 

We happened upon several “picnic pop-ups”, where the Savannah Picnic Company sets up an elaborate picnic based on the guests’ preference- all you have to do is show up. They offer services from the typical basket and blanket picnic to a romantic full-service luxury picnic for two. And if you are boating for the day, they can drop off all the provisions you will need for a day on the boat delivered right to your dock.

Enjoy brunch at Collins Quarter

One of the things we love about visiting Savannah is that it sits in the “low country”, where things start a little later and the pace is a little slower. Because of this most restaurants don’t open very early, and some close between lunch and dinner.

Enjoying a good brunch is a great way to start your day, filling up before beginning your walking tour of Savannah.  Collins Quarter is located under the gorgeous old oak trees in Forsyth Park. This is just one of many unique restaurants in Savannah serving up absolutely delicious food in a cool setting!

Start walking north to Madison Square

Way back in 1733, the founder of the colony of Georgia General Oglethorpe was designing the layout of Savannah. He wanted a city that was easy to navigate and gave locals places to enjoy outdoors, but still allowing areas for the military to practice. The idea was to create a grid pattern with squares made for public use. There were originally 24 town squares in Savannah, of which 22 still remain.

One of the most iconic and enjoyed parts of Savannah, these squares often house elaborate fountains, memorials, grassy areas, and lush gardens.  Madison Square is one such section of the historic district that is picturesque, showcasing large memorials from the Revolutionary War. 

If you are a lover of the paranormal, stop by the Sorrel-Weed House on your walking tour of Savannah. Sitting unassumingly on the corner of Madison Square is one of the most haunted houses in Savannah! One of the largest houses in Savannah, the Sorrel-Weed house is a common stop amongst Savannah ghost tours and has been featured on multiple ghost-hunter TV shows. 

Continue on to Lafayette Square

Designed to honor the Marquis de Lafayette (any Hamilton fans know this name), Lafayette Square is probably most famous for the buildings that surround it. The Andrew Low House is on the southwest corner of the square, built for the father of the founder of the Girl Scouts.

The Hamilton Turner Inn in the square is one of the finest Bed & Breakfasts in Savannah. And you absolutely can’t miss the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist neighboring the square. 

Stop at the The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist

The Cathedral of St. John is absolutely stunning and is a must-see landmark while on a Savannah walking tour. The most impressive building in Savannah from an architecture standpoint, the cathedral was the first building in Georgia constructed of brick. Built in 1859 and it is complete with 81 stained glass windows, 16 gargoyles, and stands 214 feet tall. At certain times during the day you can walk into the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and check it out. 

If you fancy a drink, head to Peregrin

The Peregrin rooftop lounge is, by far, our favorite rooftop bar we have visited. The views of Savannah’s historic district are unparalleled. The Peregrin is located on the rooftop of the Perry Lane Hotel on Perry Street, follow Abercorn north a few blocks after the Cathedral. 

Browse the upcoming shows at the Savannah Theater

After soaking in the views at the Peregrin, walk the two blocks towards Chippewa Square and make a stop at the Historic Savannah Theater . Famous names such as Oscar Wilde and Edwin Boothe (John Wilkes’ older brother) have performed here.

Opened in 1818, the theater was remodeled to an Art Deco style after a fire in 1948. Today, shows such as Mamma Mia, Elf: The Musical, and Grease are performed here and create a night to remember!

Check out Chippewa Square

If you have seen the movie Forrest Gump, you might recognize Chippewa Square. This is the setting where a good portion of the movie was filmed, with Forrest sitting on that familiar bench waiting for his bus. Chippewa Square is located just past the theater in the center of the downtown historic district.

The bench became such a popular tourist attraction due to the film that crowds started to block traffic, and has since been moved to the Savannah History Museum. Replicas however are still seen at the popular Bubba Gump restaurants. And that’s all I have to say about that.

Grab a bite to eat

From Chippewa Square, it is time to head towards the waterfront. Don’t miss a stop by  The Olde Pink House which serves classic southern-style food in a mansion that was built in 1771. This is a very popular establishment and reservations are highly recommended. 

Note : The restaurants located on River Street can be crowded and overpriced. We recommend eating before heading to River Street, or right after at the City Market.

Cool off with ice cream at Leopold's

Leopold’s Ice Cream prides itself on being “A Savannah Tradition”. Our cousin lived in Savannah attending SCAD and said she and friends visited Leopold’s more times than she can count. There is almost always a line, including when we visited in winter and it was 45 degrees outside. The line goes quickly and the ice cream is most definitely worth the wait.

Continue walking north to the Historic River Street Waterfront

Time to burn off some of those deep-fried calories! No one said southern food was healthy, but it sure is good. The historic River Street in Savannah boasts more than 70 shops, art galleries, restaurants, pubs and hotels along the waterfront.

This is the perfect place to shop for kitschy souvenirs and old-time candies, and is a great place to stay in Savannah’s historic district. Known as the “main strip” in the city, this row of antique cotton warehouses and old brick buildings is now a thriving tourist attraction.

Begin your trip to River Street at the Waving Girl Statue in Morrell Park. The statue was built as a tribute to Florence Martus, a Savannah local who greeted ships from 1887 to 1931 entering Savannah by waving a cloth from her family’s lighthouse on Cockspur Island. Continue meandering along the cobblestone street alongside a working harbor, ducking in and out of shops as you please. 

Tip : Savannah has a law that allows open containers of alcohol to be consumed within the historic district, most notably while walking along River Street. You will notice bars offering “to-go” or “takeaway” drinks, and as long as your beverage is in a 16-ounce plastic container, you are good to go.

Head west to Savannah's City Market

The Savannah City Market is an open-air market that has been operating since the 1700’s. A large courtyard settled between two town squares, this section of the historic district houses bistros and cafes, bars and restaurants, art galleries and local shops. More often than not bands and musicians are playing in the center of the market. This is a great spot to hop on a trolley or horse-drawn carriage ride through town.

The City Market is the perfect place to sit for a while, listen to some music, and end your walking tour of Savannah. You’ve earned yourself a cold drink and some rest!

Note : If you parked in the Liberty Parking Deck, it is just a ten minute walk from the City Market back to your car.

How to Get to Savannah, Georgia

If you are flying to Savannah, the best airport to fly into is the Savannah/Hilton Head Island International Airport , conveniently located just 20 minutes from the Savannah’s historic downtown. Alternatively, the Jacksonville International Airport is two hours south of Savannah and serves more airlines. 

Savannah is also relatively close to some other major cities by car. It is a 3.5 hour drive from Atlanta, two hours from another one of our favorite southern stops: Charleston, South Carolina, and about four hours from Orlando.

We recommend staying right in the heart of the historic district. From here you can walk to almost everything we have listed, making finding a parking spot a non-issue. Here are some highly rated hotel options:

For the more adventurous who prefer staying in the outdoors, a great place for RV or tent campers is at the nearby Fort McAllister State Park . We found this park extremely clean and quiet, with amazing sunset views and wildlife in abundance. There were deer padding through our campsite every day! There is also a great spot to launch your kayak or canoe onto Redbird Creek, and boat docks that are perfect for fishing.

The best time to visit Savannah is in the spring and early summer , March through June. With little humidity and flowering trees, shrubs, and plants blooming throughout the abundant parks, this is when the city really shines.

However since Savannah has a sub-tropical climate, visitors can enjoy walking through the historic district year-round. The winter months bring cooler weather with highs in the low-to-mid 60’s. Summer can be pretty warm, but there are plenty of lakes and beaches to cool off in the area!

Tip : Avoid booking a trip to Savannah during St. Patrick’s Day weekend in March, unless you love crowds. The city is flooded with party-goers and parades for the holiday and you won’t get a true feel or vibe of Savannah. We will say though, if joining in on the luck of the Irish is on your bucket list, Savannah does it big!

Visit Tybee Island

Tybee Island (pronounced “Tie-bee”) is a barrier island off the coast of Georgia, just 20 minutes from downtown Savannah. Over three miles of wide sandy beaches and calm coastal waters create the perfect setting for a beach day or a family vacation.

Fishing piers, marinas for launching boats, kayaks and paddleboards, bike paths, parks and picnic pavilions dot the island. Tybee Island is a great place to stay if you prefer the beach life!

Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse sits along the coastline of Tybee Island and is one of the few light stations where visitors can climb to the top. The Tybee Island Lighthouse dates back to 1773, with the surrounding area and grounds encompassing a history from much earlier when indigenous peoples and pirates roamed the island. Take the 178 steps to the top for panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and to watch massive cargo ships navigating the waters of the Savannah River.

The Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) is a private art school in Savannah, with classrooms set in over 70 different historic buildings throughout the town. The SCAD Museum of Art displays contemporary pieces of art from emerging and established international artists, set inside a brick structure from 1853.

Along with rotating art galleries and exhibits, the museum features a small theater for film screenings and lectures from visiting artists as well as a café.

Enjoy a Savannah sunset riverboat cruise

While a boat tour any time of day is always a good idea, a sunset cruise on a riverboat is something not to be missed. Let the Savannah River Queen or the Georgia Queen take you out on a two hour cruise while you enjoy views from the top of the rooftop deck. This cruise has a full bar and grill, and operates every evening from April to October.

Stop for a Quick Photo at the Gingerbread House

A short stop on your way into town, the Gingerbread House is one of the most famous homes in the historic district. Built in 1899 the house provides an excellent example of “Steamboat Gothic” architecture. Available as a short term luxury vacation rental as well as for elevated, intimate weddings, the house is located at 1921 Bull Street.

While many locals, including Taylor and Osbourne, recommend visiting the coastal community for at least three nights, Savannah is one of those places travelers can return to again and again, experiencing something new on each trip. 1. Stroll through the city’s parks and squares.

At 30 acres, Forsyth Park is the largest green space in Savannah’s Historic District, with ample room for walking, picnicking, and big events — if you're here in September, check out the annual Savannah Jazz Festival. Any time of year, stop by the famous fountain before making your way to Chippewa Square, where you’ll the “Forrest Gump” bench. 

2. Get your caffeine fix at The Coffee Fox.

Instead of your typical black coffee, opt for the signature horchata latte at The Coffee Fox to start your day. If you’re hungry, snag a kolache (a Czech pastry), or something off the all-day brunch menu at The Collins Quarter , just a five-minute walk away. 

3. Enjoy a beach day on Tybee Island.

Tybee Island, one of the best beach towns in the South , is about 20 minutes from downtown Savannah. Brandon Carter, executive chef and owner of Savannah restaurant Common Thread (more on it later) loves this easy excursion himself. “The drive out is great to help you decompress. Tybee has beach town vibes and great little shops. Don’t forget to hit Sea Wolf for strong drinks and tasty hot dogs,” he says. 

4. Browse the shelves at E Shaver Booksellers.

You don’t need to be an avid reader to appreciate the charm of E Shaver Booksellers, an iconic bookstore on Bull Street. If you are a bibliophile, you’ll surely leave with a new novel or two in hand — and don’t forget to wave goodbye to the store’s several cats as you exit. 

5. Load up on sweet treats at Back In The Day Bakery.

A midday pick-me-up is always a good idea, especially if you’re exploring the city by foot. Back in the Day Bakery , owned by Cheryl and Griffith Day, is just the ticket. A wildflower honey bun or a blueberry muffin will keep hunger at bay. 

6. View the latest exhibitions at the SCAD Museum of Art. 

Savannah hums with creativity, and a large part of that stems from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). The SCAD Museum of Art, a contemporary art museum affiliated with the school, has a series of rotating contemporary art exhibitions on display throughout the year; see what’s on view here . 

7. Venture down cobblestoned River Street.

Perry Lane Hotel ’s Mandy Heldreth, a lifelong Savannah resident, says this famous riverfront path is a must-see when in town. “Take a walk down the cobblestones on River Street. The historic walkway takes you along the Savannah River, where you can see the cargo vessels continuing into the Port of Savannah.”

8. Visit the three Telfair Museums, the first public art museum in the South.

The oldest public art museum in the Southeastern United States, Telfair Museums is actually made up of three museums. Two are National Historic Landmark sites: the Telfair Academy and the Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters. The Jepson Center for the Arts is the third structure, a modern one built in 2006 and home to an art collection that stretches from the 19th century to today. The best part? You only need one ticket for all three. 

9. Fill up on fresh seafood.

In a coastal city like Savannah, it’s no surprise that the seafood is wildly good. “There’s a walk-up fried fish place called Shabazz [with] a real sense of place. My order: fried whiting, fries, Shabazz juice, and a slice of 'Yusuf's World Famous Pie.' I love that place,” chef Carter said.

10. Sign up for a ghost or history tour. 

Walking tours are a great way to get to know this destination. Patt Gunn, founder of Underground Tours of Savannah , often leads 90-minute historical treks in town, highlighting the journey of enslaved Africans brought to Savannah and sold in Johnson Square — an important part of the city’s past. 

Whether you’d prefer to walk, bike, or catch a narrated ride on a boat or trolley, tour options abound —just pick the theme that best suits your interests. 11. Immerse yourself in art, music, and shopping at City Market. 

Savannah’s historic City Market once welcomed fishermen, farmers, and horse-drawn carriages on a daily basis. Today, the open-air market, which spans four blocks, is a hub for galleries, shops, restaurants, and the American Prohibition Museum , which even has an onsite speakeasy. 

12. Escape the heat by visiting another city museum. 

Savannah’s museum roster is vast and varied. In addition to the Telfair Museums, the SCAD Museum of Art, and the American Prohibition Museum, there’s the Savannah African Art Museum , the Mercer Williams House Museum , and the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum , named for the “father” of the Civil Rights Movement in Savannah and the 13th pastor of Savannah’s First African Baptist Church.

13. Sit down for a meal at The Olde Pink House.

Known and named for its pink hue, The Olde Pink House is a tourist favorite in Savannah. The menu is distinctly Southern — think fried green tomatoes and fried chicken — and it maintains a fabulous reputation throughout the city. 

14. Pick up local produce at Forsyth Farmers’ Market.

If you’re in town on a Saturday, Taylor and Osbourne recommend “[starting] the morning with a walk around the farmers’ market at Forsyth Park .” Once you’ve made your selections, head down Bull Street toward Broughton Street to visit two of their favorite shops: The Paris Market and Terra Cotta .

15. Throw back a few oysters at Common Thread.

Named by Bon Appétit as one of the best new restaurants in 2022, Common Thread is an “ingredient and seasonally inspired restaurant concept” inside of a restored two-story home built in the 19th century. Chef Carter helms this beloved place, and his dynamic menu changes based on produce availability, but you can never go wrong with the oysters to start. For other meals nearby, Chef Carter recommends having a “light and flavorful” lunch at Wildflower Cafe on Telfair Square and a nightcap at Lone Wolf Lounge .

16. Stretch your legs in Bonaventure Cemetery.

Three miles from downtown is Bonaventure Cemetery , an azalea-filled resting place known for its role in John Berendt’s 1994 book “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.” Osbourne’s pro-tip for visiting the 100-plus acres? “Bring bug spray.”

17. Cool off with some ice cream at Leopold’s. 

Serving homemade ice cream since 1919, Leopold’s is a Savannah staple. When the Southern city’s temperatures reach the 90s, nothing takes the edge off quite like a scoop or two inside the famed ice cream parlor. 

18. Saddle up to a different kind of bar at Savannah Bee Company's flagship store.

Opened in 2008, the Broughton Street location of Savannah Bee Company treats visitors to both a honey-tasting bar and a mead-tasting bar. It’s the perfect way to break up your day, and you can also pick up a souvenir from your travels.

19. Make a reservation at Chef Mashama Bailey's The Grey. 

Chef Mashama Bailey is known throughout the culinary world; in 2019, she was awarded the title of Best Chef Southeast by the James Beard Foundation. In Savannah, her name is synonymous with her restaurant The Grey , which is set in an Art Deco building that was once a Greyhound station. According to Taylor, “You should absolutely eat at the bar in The Grey; the building restoration is a beautiful thing."

20. Have a rooftop drink at Perry Lane Hotel.

Peregrin at the Perry Lane Hotel grants visitors great views of the city, but they're particularly magical at sunset. The bar has signature cocktails, zero-proof concoctions, and multiple frozé options, including rosé, aperol, lillet rouge, and lemon.

21. Visit the First African Baptist Church and the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist.

A National Historic Landmark, Savannah’s First African Baptist Church is said to be the “oldest continuous African-American congregation in America.” Tickets for tours can be purchased here . The Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist — about one mile away — is open for self-guided tours seven days a week, though hours vary. 

22. Wait in line for a seat inside Mrs. Wilkes' Dining Room.

If you want Southern comfort food, there’s one place to go, and that's Mrs. Wilkes’ Dining Room . “Lunch at Mrs. Wilkes’ is totally worth waiting in line for,” says Taylor. Doors open at 11 a.m., and the lucky individuals inside are privy to a family-style meal of fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, butter beans, okra and tomatoes, and other mouth-watering delights.

The latter has been entirely refurbished, with bright-colored carpets, bold artwork and a massive fossil collection, which includes a chrome-dipped model dinosaur fossil hanging in the lobby, nicknamed Chromina Joule.

Craving Lowcountry classics with an innovative twist? Husk, which has a sister restaurant of the same name in Charleston, sources directly from local farmers and the waterways. Located right in the middle of the historic district in a restored 19th-century house, Husk is known for its 12 varieties of regional oysters, with a menu that is updated daily. The restaurant, which features an open kitchen, also offers over 200 wine options.

Initially built as a private home by James Habersham , Jr. in 1771, the Olde Pink House Restaurant has since been transformed into an upscale eatery that epitomizes Southern hospitality, complete with 13 unique dining spaces adorned with portraits and chandeliers. Locals and tourists alike clamor to get their hands on the cornbread biscuits, crab beignets and shrimp and grits “sushi,” so we recommend making a dinner reservation a few months in advance. As for its signature pink color? It was actually a mistake—Habersham used red brick for the foundation, which bled into the white plaster. He kept trying to cover it, but when Alida Harper Fowlkes bought the property in 1930, she embraced the hue and converted it into a tea room.

No matter how busy you are during your time in Savannah, you must make your way to Cotton & Rye. Everything is made in-house (even the crackers), and all the ingredients are locally-sourced. Finish with a slice of the much-lauded peanut butter pie and a glass of whiskey.

For a bit of Australian flair at your brunch, head over to either of the two Collins Quarter locations for shakshuka-style grits and spiced lavender mochas. Though the eatery is best known for brunch and breakfast, their dinner is also quite strong.

Savannah is regarded as one of the most haunted cities in the U.S. , so tourists have their pick of ghost tours. A haunted pub crawl is surely one of the most fun options on these walking tours, especially if it features the Six Pence Pub. Dine on British pub favorites like Scotch eggs and Welsh rarebit, though you could also just opt for nachos. As for its inclusion in the haunted pub crawl? Every corner of the two-level city market store is delightfully crammed with furniture, home decor, dishes, vintage clothes, toys and an extensive assortment of ornaments during the holidays, plus a cafe to keep you stuffed with pastries and hopped-up on cappuccinos. For other shopping, the Savannah Forsyth Farmers’ Market , at the intersection of Bull Street and Park Avenue, is always a great Saturday option, and the home goods and clothing store Asher + Rye looks like something out of Gwyneth Paltrow ’s dreams.

If you do find yourself wanting to get away from the city and you've gotten in all your sightseeing, consider a day trip to Tybee Island. It’s about a 30-minute drive from downtown Savannah, and there’s also a $10 shuttle bus. Didn’t bring your beach supplies? No worries. The town caters to impromptu visits, with plenty of little shops. When you aren’t basking in the rays on the beaches, take a long walk to the Tybee Island Light Station and Museum for a self-guided tour. The pier is also particularly photographable. Watch the sunset or have an adventurous lunch at The Crab Shack , where you can feed real gators as you dine on a low country boil. If you want to explore further, head out to Moon River District and see the real Moon River that Savannah native Johnny Mercer based his beloved song of the same name.

You can barely go a block in Savannah without spotting a candy store. Savannah’s Candy Kitchen , a mom-and-pop-type shop that also offers fudge, toffee, candy apples, pies and cakes, has two locations in the city. If you don’t find enough sugar there, venture over to one of River Street Sweets ’ three outposts. Similar to Savannah’s Candy Kitchen, this store has a vintage vibe and is known for its saltwater taffy, pralines, hand-dipped ice cream and a wide variety of truffles. If you want something more modern, head over to the city's latest confectionary delight, OMG! Candy Store . The very Instagrammable shop, which also has a location in Charleston, sells an extensive variety of modern and vintage candy, making it impossible to have a bad time.

So much of the work of SCAD is intrinsically woven into the fabric of the city, but you can see it all come together at the SCAD Museum of Art . It serves visitors and students alike, and features 10 dynamic gallery spaces presenting exhibitions and commissioned works by international emerging and established artists. Exhibitions range from painting, sculpture and photography to digital media, fashion and jewelry, complementing the artistic disciplines offered at the university. The Evans Center for African American Studies, established in 2011, celebrates Black art and culture, and is a must-visit. In the Savannah Historic District, the Telfair Museum is another worthy stop, composed of the Jepson Center, Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters and Telfair Academy. Less than a 10-minute walk away, there's also the Prohibition Museum , which transports visitors through the history of the prohibition movement. If you're hungry, make sure to book a reservation at The Grey , right nearby.

Georgia native Steven Fisk wins Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Steven Fisk is Georgia through and through. He was born in Atlanta and grew up on a par-3 course and driving range his father built (and still operates) in his childhood hometown of Stockbridge. He played college golf for Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, a little under 200 miles from home. He and his wife, Edith, wed last month in Augusta. And Sunday evening in Savannah, roughly an hour drive from Georgia Southern, the 26-year-old Fisk earned his first Korn Ferry Tour win.

Fisk birdied three of the final four holes of regulation and defeated Rob Oppenheim in a sudden-death playoff, capturing the 2024 Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club with a two-putt par on the Deer Creek Course’s par-5 18th hole.

“Such a long day that somehow went by really fast at the same time,” Fisk said. “To get my first win right here in Savannah, so close to where I went to school, is kind of crazy. I haven’t had much success here in the past, but to get it done today is extra special to be this close to what’s kind of my adopted home.”

Fisk began the final round one stroke off the lead but trailed Oppenheim by three strokes with four holes to play. Back-to-back birdies at the par-4 15th and 16th, followed by a clutch par save at the par-3 17th, opened the door for a tying birdie at No. 18. Fisk came within inches of a hole-out eagle from the greenside bunker, but tapped in for a bogey-free 4-under 68 and matched Oppenheim at 14-under 274.

For the fourth consecutive event, the winner would be determined via a playoff, tying the Korn Ferry Tour record for consecutive events with a playoff. The previous instances occurred in 2004 and 2019.

In the playoff, Fisk found the right side of the fairway, while Oppenheim drove it into a fairway bunker up the same side. Both had chip shots from behind the green, with Fisk’s rolling out to roughly 12 feet. After Fisk’s two-putt par, Oppenheim had a 7-footer for par which would have extended the playoff. It grazed the left edge of the cup but never fell, sealing the win for Fisk.

“Definitely could feel the crowd on my side,” said Fisk, whose gallery included his wife, parents, as well as his former head coach and several members of the Georgia Southern golf program. “I had a great group of people following me all week, and for them to come out and continue to support me is so special.”

Fisk’s victory in his home state was more than two decades in the making.

When Fisk was 4 or 5 years old, his father, Christopher, built Rum Creek Golf, a nine-hole par-3 course with a driving range and putting green. Even in its infancy, when there was more dirt than sod laid, young Fisk had a club in his hand. By the time he turned 8 years old, Christopher said his son’s hands looked as though they belonged to a bricklayer. As he grew up, Fisk played the par-3 course four or five, maybe even six times a day.

Fisk developed a strong iron game and a unique grip, with the latter eliciting a wide range of critiques through the years.

“If you ask anybody else, my grip probably sucks,” Fisk said. “But I’ve always done it this way. I’ve tried to tinker with it over the years with my coach. It’s just not something I’ve ever been able to get comfortable with. I figured if I’m going to have success in this game, I’m going to do it my way and be stubborn, and do everything I can to make myself the best player I can be and rely on some of my natural instincts.”

Unique grip and all, Fisk racked up nine career wins in four seasons at Georgia Southern, including six as a senior in the 2018-19 season. Fisk capped his collegiate career with a runner-up finish at the 2019 NCAA Championship and turned professional.

After an undistinguished 2021 season on the Forme Tour (a one-year substitute for PGA TOUR Canada amid the COVID-19 pandemic), Fisk earned Korn Ferry Tour membership and guaranteed starts with a T19 finish at Q-School. A year later, Fisk was right back at Final Stage of Q-School, as he finished No. 119 on the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Points List with 13 missed cuts in 21 starts.

The second time around was much different for Fisk, who spent nearly the entire 2023 season inside the top 75 and finished No. 64 on the Korn Ferry Tour Points List, earning fully exempt status for the 2024 season.

The flexibility of fully exempt status was a blessing for Fisk, as the Korn Ferry Tour events in Argentina and Chile bumped up against his and Edith’s wedding plans. Without fear of reshuffles or a significant setback on the Points List, Fisk skipped the two events and hardly worried about the results.

Although the newlyweds were only able to vacation for a few days in Florida following the wedding, they discussed a proper honeymoon. Edith had her heart set on Cabo San Lucas.

“I told her we’d see how the year went,” Fisk said. “I think she’s looking pretty good right now.”

• At 14-under 274, Fisk (first, 14-under) totaled the highest 72-hole score by a champion of the Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club (previous: Dan McCarthy/272/2019).
• Korn Ferry Tour winner Oppenheim (second, 14-under) records his third career runner-up finish on the Korn Ferry Tour (2017 Utah Championship presented by Zions Bank, 2017 DAP Championship); he also posts his first top-10 on Tour since May 2022 (T6/Visit Knoxville Open).
• Pak, who finished No. 1 in the inaugural PGA TOUR University Class of 2021, entered the week with one career top-25 (T17/2022 LECOM Suncoast Classic).
• Korn Ferry Tour winner Max McGreevy (T3, 12 under) records his third top-10 of the season (sixth/The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic at Sandals Emerald Bay; T8/Astara Golf Championship presented by Mastercard) and has not finished lower than T15 in his three starts at the Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club (T15, 2020; second, 2021).
• Kang, who earned guaranteed starts for the first eight events of the season as a Second Stage medalist from 2023 PGA TOUR Q-School presented by Korn Ferry, entered the week without a top-10 in his previous 12 career starts on the Korn Ferry Tour, with his career-high finish being T20, 2024 Astara Chile Classic presented by Scotiabank
• Philip Knowles (T3, 12-under), who shared the 54-hole lead with Kevin Roy (T6, 11 under), posts his third career top-10 and his highest finish since a T2 at the 2022 Albertsons Boise Open, which earned him a PGA TOUR card in the 2022 Korn Ferry Tour Finals.
• Open qualifier Mason Williams (T9, 10-under), who played five seasons at Georgia Southern University (2018-23) and entered the week with one previous start in a PGA TOUR-sanctioned event (2019 Military Tribute at The Greenbrier as sponsor exemption/MC), earns a spot in the LECOM Suncoast Classic with his top-25 finish this week
• Sponsor exemption Dalton Ward (T25 , 8-under) earns an spot in the LECOM Suncoast Classic with his second top-25 in three starts this season (T3 as open qualifier at 117th Visa Argentina Open presented by Macro).
