What visa-free entry means is, if you have an Indian passport, after arrival at a Thai airport, you can go straight to immigration. You don’t have to go to the visa on arrival counter, or any visa counter for that matter. If you are arriving within the specified dates, you don’t need a Thailand visa.

This visa exemption is significant for two reasons: One, it increases the period of stay to 30 days, which was 15 days under the visa on arrival scheme. And two, it results in a direct saving of the visa fee, which was a minimum of 2000 Baht, and 2200 Baht if someone opted for the fast track visa.

Visa-Free Entry Rules and Requirements

Visa-free travel does not mean there are no rules or formalities left to comply with. When you go to the immigration counter for the entry stamp, there will be a set of rules and requirements to follow, as under:

1. Passport with a remaining validity of six months, and two blank pages.

2. Boarding card of the arrival flight

3. Confirmed return or onward journey air ticket

4. Confirmed hotel bookings for the entire period of stay in Thailand

5. Proof of funds

6. The purpose of the visit must be tourism only.

Let us see these requirements in detail:

1. Passport

Your passport should have a minimum remaining validity of six months on the day of your arrival in Thailand. The passport should also have at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.

2. Boarding Card

The boarding card of the flight on which you arrive in Thailand is an important document which shows the details of your inward travel, and is examined by the immigration officer. Keep your boarding card safe, and present it when asked for.

3. Return Air Ticket

You need to have a confirmed return or onward journey air ticket for travel within 30 days, including the dates of arrival and exit. A plan to exit Thailand via a land crossing may not be accepted. Carry a printed copy.

4. Confirmed Hotel Bookings

Confirmed and verifiable hotel bookings are needed for the entire period of stay in Thailand. Carry printed copies of all hotel confirmation vouchers or emails.

Any special proof of funds requirement for travel under the visa-waiver scheme as not been announced. However, going by the funds requirement specified for the other countries which enjoy visa-exemption in Thailand, you need to have at least 10,000 Baht per person and 20,000 Baht per family.

The proof of funds, if demanded, has to be shown in cash only. It can be either in Thai Baht, or USD, or another popular currency. If you are planning to stay longer than 15 days, you may like to carry some extra money.

6. Purpose of Visit

The purpose of your visit has to be tourism only. Any type of employment in Thailand is prohibited on tourist visa.

Based on your country of residence, you will be issued the short-term visa on arrival for either 14 days or 30 days or 60 days or 90 days. For different countries, there are different set of eligibility rules.

Process for long term and non-immigrant categories of visa would require you to apply in advance before visiting the country. The Thai embassy has recognized two agencies in India to carry out the application process on behalf of candidates. These agencies are VFS Global and Cox & Kings. You can contact one of these agencies and sort out the documents as well as the visa application process. Otherwise, you can download the application form, submit it to the embassy or consulate along with relevant supporting documents and then wait for the visa. The visa will be either approved or rejected within a timeline of 3 days from the application.

The process of application for long term and non-immigrant categories can be completed online as well as offline based on your convenience.

Where to apply for Thailand Visa?

Offline application:.

Offline application can be made by visiting any of the VFS Global Thailand Visa Application Centres. You can download the application form from the website of VFS Global and submit it at any of the offline centres along with your photo and relevant supporting documents. VFS Global has application centres in Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chandigarh, Gurgaon, Jaipur, Kolkata and Kochi.

Online Application:

You can also apply for Thailand visa online. You will need to visit the website of VFS Global Thailand page. You can fill the form here and submit it online along with your basic personal details. Once you submit the form, you will need to select one of the Thailand Embassy and Consulates for the application process based on your location within India. The Royal Thai Embassy is in New Delhi, whereas there are Royal Thai Consulate Generals in Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata.

Visa on Arrival:

For short-term tourism related purpose of traveling up to 30 days in Thailand, you do not need to apply before you reach the country. Once you land in Thailand, you would just need to visit the immigration office at the airport and furnish relevant documents along with return flight ticket in order to get the visa issued.

There is no need of any prior appointment in order to apply for Thailand visa. If you wish to apply offline, you can just walk in to any of the above-mentioned Visa Application Centres of VFS Global and get the process done. For media visa, you would additionally need an official letter from the Ministry of Tourism in Thailand to grant you permission of making a film or conducting specific media activities within the country
In case of a journalist, you would additionally need to provide proof on your agency being registered with the Thai government or a specific state
In case you were issued visa earlier and did not use, you would need to provide an explanation letter on the reasons the previous visa was not used
In case your name is different in any of the documents you have furnished, you would additionally need evidence to verify your identity

Documents Required for Education Visa (Type ED)

Letter issued by a registered institute confirming the admission along with the details of the course
Letter issued by the current employer of applicant granting leave to attend training/seminar/conference (if applicable)
Proof of education of the applicant with all important marksheets
If the applicant is less than 18 years in age, he/she would need to furnish all important details of parents including their marriage certificate, consent letter duly signed, copies of their biodatas and passports, etc.

Foreigners can enter Thailand for a holiday in many ways. If they are limited in time and are from a Visa Exempt country, they can visit for up to 30 days without needing a visa through Thailand’s Visa Exemption scheme . What is a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa?

A Multi-Entry Tourist Visa allows foreign nationals unlimited entry to Thailand over a 6-month period. It is issued to people who visit the country for tourism, leisure, or medical purposes.

A multi-entry visa allows the holder to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days per visit. A person could visit the islands in the south of Thailand, relax on the beach and learn to scuba dive for two months; fly to Vietnam and enjoy the sights of Saigon for a week or two; and then return to Thailand’s northern mountains to experience animal sanctuaries, Lan Na culture, and cook northern Thai food.

With a multi-entry visa, people can enter either by air, land, or sea. Many people arrive by plane and then leave by train or boat.

The visa is valid for 6 months after it is approved. This means that people have 6 months to use the visa and enter Thailand as often as they like from the date their visa is approved. It is easy to confuse visa validity with time spent in the country. Validity is how long you have to utilize or use the visa before needing to apply for a new one. Time in the country is the 60-day permission of stay. A stamp is placed in your passport for 60 days when you arrive, so a visitor can arrive on the last day of their visa validity and still get a full 60 days to stay in Thailand.

How to apply for a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa

Many nationalities can now apply for their Thailand Multi-Entry Tourist Visa online at https://thaievisa.go.th/home . This system was updated during Covid and is often the simplest way to obtain a visa.

When applying for a visa online, applicants need to create an account and apply as individuals. Once the account is created, individuals will need the following documents:

A current passport with no less than 6 months validity beyond the date of departure from Thailand and at least 2 blank pages. Applicants must complete online visa applications with their given name(s) and surname matching their passports.
Printout of visa application form submitted online, with barcode
Travel booking confirmation
Proof of accommodation in Thailand, e.g. hotel booking, invitation letter from family or friend in Thailand
Financial evidence showing a balance of 200,000 Thai Baht (approx. £5000, USD$5,5000, Aud$8000). This is to prove financial stability over a 6-month period. e.g. bank statements, proof of earnings, sponsorship letter from employer

E-Visa applicants do not need to submit their passport and original supporting documents in person at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate. After the e-Visa application has been approved, a confirmation email is sent to applicants. It is best to print a copy of the confirmation email when you are ready to travel. This will be presented to airlines and Thai Immigration officials when traveling to Thailand.

Certain countries are not eligible to apply for an E-Visa because additional documents are needed for approval.

Immigration requirements can change without notice, and many embassies will not allow walk-ins, so it is best to contact the embassy when you are ready to apply. As noted above, Multiple Entry Tourist Visas are for tourism, leisure, or medical purposes only. Foreigners cannot earn income, study long-term, or conduct volunteer activities in Thailand if they have entered with a tourist visa.

If you wish to take part in any of the above activities, you will need to look at long-term visa options. You can contact your local Thai embassy to discuss options, or seek assistance from a Visa Agent to apply for a long-term visa .

Arriving in Thailand

When you arrive in Thailand, you will need to provide the following documents at Passport Control:

Passport with approved visa attached (if you applied at an Embassy)
Confirmation letter of visa approval (if you applied online)
Confirmed exit flight from the country no later than 60 days
Confirmed accommodation (at least for the first night in the country)
Current financial or bank statement showing funds available (200,000 Thai Baht equivalent)

A good practice is to print copies of these documents. Entry approval is at the discretion of immigration officers and presenting hard copies of these documents will speed your processing through Passport Control and help ease congestion at the airport.

Extending your Tourist Visa

If you decide you would like to stay for longer than 60 days before visiting somewhere else, it is possible to extend your stay in Thailand. Visitors with a Multi-Entry Tourist visa can extend their time in the country by 30 days by visiting a local Thai Immigration Office. An extension of stay will cost 1900 Thai Baht and must be paid in cash (Thai Baht) when applying for the extension.

When you extend your stay, a new stamp will be placed in your passport for 30 days from the date you are at immigration, so it is best to do this towards the end of your 60-day visit.

You need to visit the office before your current stay period expires. Staying in the country past your exit date will cause an “overstay” and you will be fined 500 baht per day after your official exit date. An overstay is noted in your passport and can affect future visa applications. This extension of stay is only available in the country.

It is important to note that Thai Immigration offices are not open on weekends.

In a move to promote seamless mobility across Southeast Asian countries, Thailand is leading an initiative for a joint visa programme spanning six nations. The proposed single visa would encompass Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia, and Myanmar, collectively hosting 70 million tourists last year. Notably, Thailand and Malaysia contributed over half of this figure, clocking in USD 48 billion in tourism revenue.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin aims to streamline tourist entry by implementing a single visa for these six nations, thereby boosting tourist arrivals and maximising revenue per traveller. Targeting affluent long-haul holidaymakers, this initiative will enhance Thailand’s appeal as a tourist destination while also fortifying its aviation and logistics sectors. The Thai PM has also discussed this Schengen-like Single Visa with counterparts from Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos, Malaysia , and Myanmar in recent months.

The proposed Single Visa seeks to boost tourism in Thailand, a sector accounting for 20 percent of its total employment and contributing 12 percent to its USD 500 billion economy. The initiative aims to lure long-haul vacationers to extend their stays and explore multiple countries by offering a common visa for six regional nations. Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, a former Thai Hotels Association president, suggests extending the visa validity from 30 to 90 days to make the offer more attractive.

Visa Information

The India Visa and Consular Services Application Centre are the outsourced partner of the Embassy of India in Thailand. In this capacity, the India Visa, Passport and Consular Service Application Centre is responsible for receipt of visa applications for travel to India and visa fees, submission of applications at the Embassy / Consulate of India in Thailand, collecting the processed passports from the Embassy of India in Thailand, and returning passports back to applicants.

The India Visa and Consular Services Application Centres are managed by VFS Global who is not involved in the process of assessment of visa applications. The assessment of visa applications is carried out by the Embassy / Consulate of India in Thailand and the decision to grant or refuse a visa to India is at their sole discretion. Staff members of VFS Global have no role or influence over the outcome of an application.

All foreign nationals entering India are required to possess a valid international travel document in the form of a national passport with a valid visa obtained from an Indian Mission or Post abroad.

Important Notice

All visa applicants seeking visa for India are advised to mention the purpose of their visit to India clearly in their visa application forms and apply for relevant visa only. Please check the VFS Global website before filling in online India visa form to ensure that you are applying for appropriate visa and all the requisite documents are attached when presenting the printed application at the VFS Global.

It is mandatory to be present in Thailand at the moment of your visa application.

Please note that the validity of the visa begins from the date of issue by the Embassy / Consulate of India in Thailand and not from the date of travel mentioned on your application form.

Tourist Visa is granted to a Thai National / Foreigner who does not have a residence or occupation in India and whose sole objective of visiting India is recreation, sight-seeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives. Tourist Visa on Arrival Scheme

A "Tourist Visa-on-Arrival (TVOA)" Scheme is available to International Travelers whose sole objective of visiting India is recreation , sight-seeing , casual visit to meet friends or relatives, short duration medical treatment or casual business visit.

A “Tourist Visa-on-Arrival (TVOA)” Scheme is available to tourists that are nationals of Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Cook Islands, Djibouti, Fiji, Finland, Germany, Guyana, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Kiribati, Laos, Luxembourg, Marshall Islands, Mauritius, Mexico, Micronesia, Myanmar, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue Island, Norway, Oman, Palau, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of Korea, Russia, Samoa, Singapore, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Tonga, Tuvalu, UAE, Ukraine, USA, Vanuatu, Vietnam.

ETV is valid for entry through 9 designated Airports i.e. Bengaluru, Chennai,Cochin, Delhi ,Goa, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai & Trivandrum. However, the foreigner can take exit from any of the authorized Immigration Check Posts (ICPs) in India.

For Applicants that have their own house or going to stay with friends or relatives in India must write a letter of stay and provide an invitation letter from the host with their supporting documents (like passport copy or Indian identity card copy )
Minimum gap of two months is mandatory between two consecutive visits for nationals of Afghanistan, China, Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, foreigners of Bangladesh and Pakistan origin only.

*For Non – Thai Nationals the duration of the Visa is decided by the Indian Embassy as per case to case basis.*

Photographs should be in colour and strictly as per the specifications below.

Un-mounted - 2 inch x 2 inch in size.
Face should cover about 70 to 80% of the photo area.
Frame Subject with Full Face, Front view, Eyes open
Taken within the last 3 months to reflect your current appearance.
The photographs must be clear, well defined and taken against a plain white background.
Appropriate brightness and contrast showing your skin tones naturally
Even lighting (no shadows across or behind the face)
Face must be square to the camera with a neutral expression, neither frowning nor smiling and with your mouth closed.
If you must wear a head covering for religious reasons, make sure your full facial features are not obscured.
Non-tinted prescription glasses are allowed as long as your eyes are clearly visible. Make sure that the frame does not cover any part of your eyes. Sunglasses are not acceptable.
Headphones, wireless hands-free devices, or similar items are not acceptable in your photo.
Photograph for Child/babies - The photograph should show the baby or child awake, looking straight at the camera with mouth closed and nothing covering the mouth. It should also show both edges of the face clearly (no toys, blankets, chair backs or other people visible) and no hair across the eyes.

Each application is processed individually by the Embassy of India hence processing time may vary between applications that appear to be similar.

Business Visa is granted to a foreign national who wants to visit India to establish an industrial /business venture or to explore possibilities to set up industrial/business venture, or wants to purchase/sell industrial products in India.

Proof of educational qualifications and expertise of the applicant.( All documents issued by Thai companies or authorities should be translated and attested by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thailand and in case of a non-Thai certification same must be translated and attested by the Ministry of Foreign affairs of the respective country)
Experience certificate ( if available)
Copy of previous Indian visa (in case of a prior travel to India)

Non- Thai nationals must also provide additional documents as per below:

Proof of having permanent residence in Thailand for more than 2 years
Copy of work permit , if working in Thailand
Copy of current Thai visa page

Bonafide students who intends to pursue regular studies at recognized institutions in India may apply for a student visa

Validity: Duration of visa will depend on the duration of the course. For cases where only provisional admission is granted, a PROVISIONAL STUDENT Visa Is issued. A maximum of three entries per year will be granted for a Student Visa

Notice: School/College/University/Institution in India must issue original admission/bonafide letter to the student well in time so that the student can produce the same at the time of visa application. A copy of the letter may also be endorsed to the Embassy. This provision will be effective from 01/08/2011.

In case of a new passport or expiry of previous Indian visa issued, applicant needs to provide a letter duly signed which specifies the reason for the visa application
In case of applicants (less than 15 years), consent letter has to be provided by the applicants parents. In case of death or divorce , copy original and copy of the translated death/divorce certificate by an accredited translator needs to be provided

In case of students who already have a Student visa and who want to increase the number leaves - Resident permit (RP) please provide below:

Copy of resident permit (duly signed by the applicant on each page)
Copy of ID card, house registration, birth certificate in original and translated copy by an accredited translator

As per the extact instructions of the Government of India, an Entry (X) Visa can only be granted to the following persons:-

A foreigner of Indian origin, who wishes to come to India for visiting relatives, holiday etc.
Spouse and children of a foreigner of Indian origin
Spouse / dependents of foreigners coming to India on any other type of valid visa like Student/Business/Employment/Research, etc.
Family members of diplomatic households who do not qualify for diplomatic visas.
Applicants intending to participate in Sports Tournament.

Validity: Duration of visa is requirement specific depending on a case to case basis. A maximum period of one year validity is granted which can be extended in India.

Thailand Leads Push for Six-Nation Visa to Lure Moneyed Tourists

(Bloomberg) -- Thailand is steering an initiative for a joint-visa program with countries that together hosted about 70 million tourists last year as Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin ramps up initiatives to attract more long-haul and high-spending travelers.

Srettha — who’s pledged to elevate Thailand’s status as a tourism hotspot into an aviation and logistics hub — has discussed the Schengen-type visa idea with his counterparts in Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam in recent months. The facility is meant to ensure seamless mobility for travelers among the six neighboring countries.

With most leaders positively responding to the single-visa concept, tourism-reliant Thailand aims to generate more revenue per traveler and cushion its economy from headwinds such as sluggish exports and weak global demand that’s hurt its manufacturing industry.

The six Southeast Asian nations reported a combined 70 million foreign tourist arrivals in 2023, according to official data . Thailand and Malaysia accounted for more than half of the tally, generating about $48 billion in tourism revenue.

The single-visa is the most-ambitious among Srettha’s lineup of tourism initiatives but targeted for the long-term. The industry has served the country well, accounting for about 20% of total jobs and making up about 12% to the nation’s $500 billion economy. Barring the pandemic years, tourism has flourished and provided a cushion against a slump in manufacturing and exports, the traditional bulwarks of the economy.

The tourism industry is upbeat, with Marisa Sukosol Nunbhakdi, a former president of the Thai Hotels Association, saying “a common visa could entice long-haul travelers to make an easier decision.” The visa validity will need to be extended to 90 days from the usual 30-day period to make it attractive, she said.

Srettha’s administration has set a goal of attracting 80 million tourists by 2027. And since taking power about seven months ago, his government has signed a reciprocal visa waiver deal with China — Thailand’s largest market for tourists — and offered temporary visa waivers for travelers from India, Taiwan and Kazakhstan. It’s also mulling a plan to open casinos inside large entertainment complexes and event-based tourism will help the country generate more revenue.

If done right, the benefits of visa-free travel won’t be confined to tourism alone as ease of travel would be a boon for business travelers and trade, according to Bill Barnett, managing director of hospitality and property consultancy C9 Hotelworks.

But a Schengen-type visa, which allows free travel around the border-free zone within Europe, may be an uphill task given Asean’s poor track record in expediting multilateral policy framework and the group’s standing as a talk shop.

“Country by country seems to be the best way to do it,” Barnett said. “Bilateral agreements, where governments are leading the way for this type of thing, make a lot of sense as they are looking outward and not inward.”

For a joint visa scheme, approvals have to be coordinated and the absence of standard immigration criteria among participating nations unlike the European Union can pose challenges, according to Thitinan Pongsudhirak, professor at Chulalongkorn University’s political science faculty. Asean, as a grouping is a divided body with a poor immigration record, he said.

With Srettha being neophyte in politics, he may lack the clout to push through the visa proposal, Thitinan said.

“All the various things he’s been trying to do, I see it as picking low-hanging fruits and picking fruits off the ground,” Thitinan said.“Sometimes fruits on the ground are rotten.”
