Nordwest-Tour

Response from Sebastiano Tours

Weiterhin gute Reise, liebe Gruesse

Sebastiano tour is one of a kind

Sebastiano is extremely knowledgeable about history, culture, food, wild life, plants, you name it! His knowledge doesn’t stop with Martinique. He is an expert on the region as a whole. On top of that, you get the attention and care of a former Michelin star restaurateur! One of the best tours I have had. Highly recommend and a very memorable experience.

Danken Dir sehr! Die drei Mädels aus dem hohen Norden

Wonderful tour

We are a family of four from the USA, who booked the Northern tour. It was an amazing experience. Sebastiano is very friendly and a wonderful guide who is very knowledgeable about Martinique. We truly enjoyed all the sights we saw today.

Fantastic guide!

Sebastiano is in my opinion the best guide in the Caribbean. His vast knowledge makes every thing and every place come alive, from nature and buildings, past and present. His thorough preparation even included exploring for a specific site i wanted to visit, just to be able to take me there – a definite highlight. His attention to details like bringing local guava pastry and guava juice was really appreciated. His enthusiasm and passion for Martinique is contagious and will stay with me forever. A marvellous day – Sebastiano is second to none. I hope to be back!

Hi Gitte and thank you for the kind words.

It was a pleasure to have such a discerning visitor to this beautiful island!

I do hope to meet again.

An amazing tour with a very passionate tour guide

Sebastiano was very knowledgeable of the area. He was amazingly resourceful and very helpful with everything we wanted to see. He has a great work around to beat traffic and still make the tour on time. He is very lovely to work with.

Thank you so much! I love doing what I do, and I am grateful for meeting such lovely visitors.

Sebastiano

For water enthusiasts, the park’s freshwater springs and rivers offer plenty of places for a dip, while streams and mangroves can be explored via kayaks or small boats. Ruins of Creole houses and historical sites are spread throughout the park and can discovered during a hike.

25 – Plunge into underwater wonders with scuba diving

Adventurous travelers will find no shortage of thrilling things to do in Martinique, but few things beat the beauty of scuba diving here. Renowned for its diverse marine life and pristine water, Martinique is the perfect destination to discover the underwater world.

For those new to the sport, embarking on a Level 1 diving course with professional instructors can be the perfect introduction. Or if you just want a couple of hours in the water, you can choose a one-on-one first dive in Sainte-Luce. 26 – Revisit history at Habitation Clément

Habitation Clément, Martinique

A former 19th-century sugar cane plantation, Habitation Clément was later converted into a rum distillery. Rum production took place here until the distillery closed its doors in 1988. Although the beginning steps of rum production now take place somewhere else, the cellars at Habitation Clément are still used for aging and bottling rum.

The rest of the manor (which features French and Caribbean architectural details) has been converted into a museum, where visitors can learn more about rum production, the history of the plantation, and the importance of sugarcane fields in Martinique.

Outside, the sprawling botanical gardens invite visitors to explore. Filled with tropical plants and lush greenery, they’re the perfect space for a serene walk.

27 – Go bananas at the unique Banana Museum

Banana Museum, Martinique

For everything you ever wanted to know about bananas (and lots more you never thought about asking about), the Banana Museum is a must-see. Nestled amid lush green banana plants in a plantation called Limbe, the museum takes visitors on a journey about the ancient origins, modern cultivation, and consumption.

The museum offers a glimpse into the many banana varieties, details traditional and modern farming methods, and showcases the impact of the banana trade. Tours of the plantation also allow visitors to experience the banana-growing process firsthand, from planting to harvest, as well as sample a number of products, including banana jams, juices, and even liqueurs.

28 – Rejuvenate in the green oasis of La Savane Park

La Savane Park, Martinique

Covering over five hectares, La Savane Park is Fort-de-France’s most impressive urban park. Because of its location in the heart of the city, it attracts both locals and tourists alike.

Long pathways lined up with palm trees crisscross through the park, offering a break from the sun and heat as visitors explore the greenery and monuments. The most famous statue here is the one dedicated to Empress Josephine. Although damaged (and never restored), the figure has become the park’s focal point.

Remnants of the old Fort Saint-Louis overlook the bay from here. In summer, festivals and live events often take over the park.

29 – Sip & learn on distillery tours

distillery tours in Martinique

Joining a rum-tasting tour is among the can’t-miss things to do in Martinique. Martinique has a long tradition of rum production. The island’s fertile volcanic soil, tropical climate, and sugarcane plantations have played a significant role in its rum industry.

For those visiting Martinique, rum distillery tours offer a chance to witness the transformation of sugarcane into rum, learn about production techniques, and taste the many varieties produced there. Distilleries also sell bottles you can take back home as a souvenir.

Many distillery tours include stops at other attractions along the way, including sun-kissed beaches and historical ruins, remnants of an era gone by.

30 – Commemorate history at Memorial 1902

St Pierre in Ruins, Martinique, 1902

On May 8, 1902, Mount Pelée erupted and almost completely wiped out the entire town of Saint-Pierre in Martinique. The volcano erupted again in 1929 — and while the death toll was lower, it was still a cataclysmic event.

Today, Memorial 1902 serves as a memorial site to not only honor those lost in this natural disaster but also to pay homage to the resilience of Martinique. Built using a combination of original ruins left after the eruption and modern architecture, the site consists of a museum filled with an array of statues, testimonies from survivors and eyewitnesses, half-melted objects (like the bronze bell from the church of Saint-Etienne-du-Centre), and scientific data about the volcanic eruption.

31 – Leaf through time at Schoelcher Library

Schoelcher Library, Martinique

Named after French abolitionist Victor Schœlcher, the Schoelcher Library is a great place to learn more about the island’s rich history. It was actually built in France in the 1800s and then shipped, piece by piece, to the island.

Home to books and over 130,000 documents (including ancient texts and manuscripts), the library also houses important artifacts and publications covering Schœlcher’s pivotal role in the abolition of slavery in the French colonies.

The library’s architecture, which features Byzantine and Romanesque details, is a work of art in itself. Don’t miss out on the expansive stained-glass windows when visiting.

32 – Gaze at the majestic Diamond Rock

Diamond Rock, Martinique

Diamond Rock, a volcanic mound located just off the coast of Martinique, is an important landmark. Once significant part in the British Royal Navy fight against Napoleon, Diamond Rock is also home to a lush ecosystem.

Because Diamond Rock is home to endangered species, visitors cannot set foot on the rock. That doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the beauty of it — and the best way to do that is from the water. Boat tours depart regularly towards Diamond Rock, getting visitors close enough for great pictures before continuing on to Les Anses-d’Arlet for great swimming and snorkeling with the turtles.

33 – Delve into the past at La Savane Des Esclaves

La Savane Des Esclaves, Martinique

La Savane Des Esclaves is an open-air museum chronicling the lives and struggles of enslaved Africans during the Colonial era. The three-hectare park features exhibitions, native flora, a Creole garden (similar to the ones where slaves grew medicinal plants), and authentic reproductions of cabins, showcasing the stark living conditions slaves survived under.

Guided tours are available (and recommended) to better understand Martinique’s complex history and the lasting impact of the slave trade on its culture and society. The museum also offers a number of workshops, and live shows highlighting traditional dance and music. Visitors will also find craft markets and several special events throughout the year.

34 – Uncover secrets at La Pagerie Museum

La Pagerie Museum, Martinique

Situated in Les Trois-Îlets, this museum occupies what was once the birthplace and childhood home of Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie, better known as Empress Joséphine, the first wife of Napoleon Bonaparte.

Once a thriving 500-hectare estate where sugar cane, cotton, and cocoa were grown, the stunning space retains its 18th-century beauty and charm. The museum grounds include well-designed tropical gardens dotted with ruins of the old sugar factory and mill.

At the La Pagerie Museum itself, visitors will get a glimpse into the life of Empress Joséphine, including letters she exchanged with Napoleon, portraits, and childhood items.

35 – Step back in time at Château Dubuc

Château Dubuc, Martinique

The stunning Château Dubuc goes back to the 17th century. Once a grand sugar plantation owned by the Dubuc family, the castle was abandoned a few hundred years ago and is now entirely in ruins. No longer private property, the castle is now a national monument and part of a nature reserve.

In addition to wandering around the stone walls and archways, visitors can also stop by a small museum on-site to learn about the dark history of sugar plantations and slavery. Exhibitions include artifacts and documents chronicling the history of the plantation and the area.

36 – Dine at Martinique’s best bestaurants

Finally, there’s Restaurant La Kabananou, located near Anse Desert beach in Sainte-Luce. There’s plenty to choose from here, but the ouassous and palourdes (river shrimp and clams) are a definite must try.

Best things to do in Martinique, an epic one week road trip itinerary

Depending on the weather , one week might be either too short or just perfect to explore the most amazing things to do in Martinique! Especially the North of the island can be very cloudy and rainy, which is the reason why it is also more lush than the southside of Martinique. If the weather is too rainy, you won’t be able to do all the hikes, since a lot of waterfall hikes lead through rivers. These become too dangerous on rainy days. Because the water level rises and the current becomes too strong. So always check the weather before you decide to go hiking! Rainy season in Martinique is between June and November, but due to climate change also this is tending to change. I was there at the end of April and already experienced a lot of rain.

Also take into account there is no highway on the island. So driving from one place to another easily takes over 30 minutes to an hour. It is recommended to depart before 7 am to avoid traffic , especially if you are staying in the South of the island. People in Martinique start leaving for work really early, so you don’t want to be stuck in traffic and waste precious time!

So let this itinerary be your guide to experience the highlights of the Caribbean island of flowers and you will not regret it! Now let’s see what are the most amazing things to see and do in Martinique!

Highlights of Martinique

DAY 1 – A desert hike & the most beautiful beach of Martinique

Savane des pétrifications & anse à prunes.

After a first good night’s sleep, it is time for your first adventure; hiking to the Savane des Pétrifications ! Even though it will be an easy rather flat hike, make sure to pack at least 2 liters of water and a snack. Trust me, you will need it! Drive to the southernmost point of the island. The last part is very bumpy on a sandy, rocky road. So take it easy to not ruin your tires or car and park near the beach of Grand Terre under the trees.

Make sure to take everything you need like your water and food , apply sunscreen (and take it with you to reapply regularly), a towel , your camera, your phone to use the GPS/map and I also advise to wear swimwear under your clothes and sneakers or hiking boots .

Once you are ready it is time to head East! The first part you will walk below the trees. Right before you need to cross the bridge, make sure to take a look at the beach at your right called Anse à Prunes , which is one of the most beautiful beaches I encountered in Martinique! Keep this place in mind for the way back!

Anse à Prunes

Before crossing the bridge, I had to take off my shoes, to wade through the water to be able to reach the bridge. The safest part was the right side of the rocks, since the left side seemed to want to suck my feet and legs into the sand. A lot of people seemed a bit worried at this part. Especially because you could not see the bottom of the water. Everyone was helping each other out.

From there on; no more shade! You will walk a dusty path along cacti, small mangrove trees and a fantastic rough rocky coastline formed by lava. I was grateful for the wind, because it gets smoking hot in the blistering sun! The hike takes about 2 to 3 hours, depending on how many photos you take along the way.

If you want, you can go for a swim at Anse à Prunes , but keep in mind it is a rather secluded beach. So do not venture too far off the coast, because no one is there to save you!

Savane des Pétrifications

Plage de Grande Anse des Salines

I had lunch after the hike at Délices de la Mer , a nice fish restaurant with a big terrace overlooking Plage de Grande Anse des Salines , one of Martinique’s most beautiful beaches. After lunch you deserve some time off so you can enjoy laying under the palm trees and swim at this gorgeous beach! After all, you are also probably still a bit jetlagged as well!

Plage de Grande Anse des Salines

DAY 2 – Sea turtles & a distillery

Anses d’arlet.

The second day of your Martinique road trip starts early to drive to les Anses d’Arlet . If you are early enough you are lucky to spot some sea turtles at Anse d’Arlet, but I have read that you will have most chance to see them at Anse Dufour and Anse Noire . So next time I will definitely check those small beaches out and take my snorkeling gear there!

I only explored the colorful fishing village of les Anses d’Arlet. Its adorable tiny church, Creole homes, sandy beach, and pontoon over the azure sea make a really picturesque setting. Also its beach has a very tranquil vibe and is ideal if you want to relax.

road trip Martinique

I also wanted to enjoy the beach of Le Diamant . But unfortunately when I was there, the beach was completely covered with sargassum. As a result of climate change, more and more sargassum is washing ashore in Martinique and it is becoming a threat to the sea turtles and us, due to the toxic fumes they produce. So hopefully, when you are there, the beach will be cleared! Because it is one of the most famous and beautiful beaches of Martinique! Another option is to hike to the viewpoint of Morne Larcher . You can start the hike near Villa Madinina on Route de l’Anse Caffard/D37. From the villa to the top is only 1.5 km, but you will have to conquer a height difference of 389 meters, so count at least one hour of hiking.

Plantation Trois Rivières

Another fun thing to do, which is an absolute must when you are in Martinique, is visiting a distillery ! Martinique is known for its superb rum, which is recognized all over the world. The majority of the rum produced on the island is Rhum Agricole, which is generated by distilling sugar cane juice. This rum has a stronger aroma. Approximately 100 kilograms of sugar cane must be processed in order to make 10 liters of rum!

In the south of Martinique you can visit Plantation Trois Rivières . It is one of the oldest distilleries of Martinique, founded in 1660. It is called Trois Rivières (meaning three rivers) because its sugar cane fields are bordered by three rivers. La Maison Trois Rivières is especially known for its old and rare vintage rums. The distillery is not active anymore, since the current production of its rum is done at the La Mauny distillery in Rivière Pilote. But you can still visit the old factory with a guide and do a rum tasting!

Plantation Trois Rivières

DAY 3 – Top things to do in Martinique: waterfalls & a botanical garden

Day three of this one week itinerary is full of jungle vibes! Today it is extremely important to make sure to wake up before sunrise so you can skip the early morning traffic lines! (unless you are staying somewhere in the north of Martinique) Why? Because you will need to drive through Fort-de-France to reach the north of Martinique and the locals are early birds. Traffic can already get pretty heavy near the capital around 6 am!

The first time driving the busy winding roads near Fort-de-France can be pretty intense. It goes up and down and there are a lot of exits. You really need to pay attention the whole time to make sure you are driving on the right lane and taking the correct exits, while cars are acting crazy around you (driving behavior in Martinique is also pretty insane at times).

But once you leave the chaos behind and you arrive in the more mountaneous area, it gets really fun! The vegetation becomes very lush and you will get those island vibes back immediately!

Cascade Absalon

First stop of the day is a hidden waterfall called Cascade Absalon , which is located near Jardin de Balata. After you passed the parking lot of the famous botanical garden, you need to take the road on your left and park your car on the side of the road, right after you crossed the bridge. Once I left the car, all I could hear were jungle sounds; the fast flowing river, rain drops of an earlier rain shower dripping on leaves, tropical bird sounds and who knows what other animals…

I knew next to the bridge there should be a stairs that leads to the river and the waterfall. Never did I expect to already spot the waterfall from the stairs! That was easy! It truly is a beautiful place and I loved to have it all to myself the entire time! Which is another reason why I always wake up early; you get to enjoy gems like this with their authentic vibes!

No one to disturb the nature sounds and peace. I could take photos and videos without disruption or annoying someone else. I could just sit there and take it all in as if it was only me and nature in this world. Sometimes that is just the best feeling! But I have to be honest; I was always checking for snakes or matoutous (Antilles pinktoe tarantulas). Because chances are you can encounter them in the jungle of Martinique!

Cascade Absalon

Cascade du Saut du Gendarme

Then it depends on what time it is, what your next stop will be. Jardin de Balata opens at 9 am and I advise to be there at 8.30 am to make sure to get a parking spot. It is also best to purchase your ticket online in advance to avoid the long waiting line. If it is still quite early (before 7 am) you can choose to go to le Cascade du Saut du Gendarme first for a swim. This is a 20 min drive from Cascade Absalon.

Le Cascade du Saut du Gendarme is a famous waterfall in Martinique. It is an excellent place to cool yourself in the refreshing water of the waterfall and its pool. To reach the waterfall you need to hike down a stairs that will guide you deeper into the tropical forest. The waterfall is surrounded by hills covered with exotic plants and trees. You will feel as if you entered another world. I swear at a certain moment I thought a dinosaur would pop up!

Saut du Gendarme

Jardin de Balata

Jardin de Balata is probably the island’s most famous attraction. Which is why, like I mentioned earlier, I advise to be there early and to get tickets in advance . This is definitely a botanical garden of another level! You will find over 3000 species of tropical plants from all around the world, including hundreds types of palm trees! According to their website the route takes about 1.5 hours, but I walked around for about 2.5 hours taking photos and trying to spot hummingbirds!

Especially the treetop canopy walk is fun to do! But be careful when it has rained, then it becomes very slippery! Also keep in mind only two people at a time are allowed on the bridges for safety reasons and that everyone wants to take photos. The couple in front of me and the guys after me; we were all on the same level. Enjoying our time and taking photos, respecting each other and waiting until the other one was finished. But there was a lady behind the guys pushing and complaing as if she needed to catch a bus or something. So at a certain point, we just told her to move forward. Because we did not want to rush.

If you did not bring your own food, you can have lunch at the restaurant at the entrance of Jardin de Balata, called La Luciole . I loved the food there!

Best things to do in Martinique, an epic one week road trip itinerary

Habitation Saint Etienne

The next stop is another distillery; Habitation Saint Etienne . This was my absolute favorite distillery! When I arrived I met a guy working there, who gave me a map of the property and who kindly took his time to explain the layout of the property. I learned that the distillery was no longer active and that the domain did not only consist of the old factory, but that there was also a cacao plantation and a huge garden. This place was stunning! The old factory with its arched windows still looked so beautiful. The old barrels were thoughtfully placed in the window frames.

I loved walking around and it was the first time I actually saw cacao beans. Now I know where Belgian chocolate is made from! I do advise to spray a lot of insect repellent before visiting the cacao plantation though! It is situated next to a river and it was packed with mosquitoes! In the garden you can also find art installations and various Strangler Fig Trees! There is also a shop where you can buy rum, chocolate and other souvenirs.

Habitation Saint-Etienne

DAY 4 – A paradise beach, a hike through the mangroves & a huge distillery

Anse michel.

Let’s start this new day of a fantastic week in Martinique with exploring one of Martiniques most beautiful beaches; Anse Michel . Wake up before sunrise and drive again to the southernmost point of the island, but instead of going all the way south to Plage des Salines, drive east direction Anse Michel / Cap Chevalier. Park the car at the big parking lot near the path leading to the beach (northeast of the parking lot). This will save you time.

The hike to the beach begins with a wooden boardwalk crossing a dark damp sand region densely packed with tiny small sand fiddler crabs racing around like mad, characterized by their one large claw and one normal. It was rather funny to see all of these small crabs crawling about and attempting to hide in the sand.

Once you arrive at the more densely forested part, there is a ridiculous amount of red crabs fleeing and hiding. Occasionally they froze, holding only one leaf over their heads, as if that way I couldn’t see them anymore. Which made me laugh so hard, because it nearly looked like human behavior! So the least you can say is that the trek to the beach was a lot of fun!

After passing the very impressive strangler fig tree you finally can take the stairs down to the beach. There the sight of a real paradise beach with large graceful palm trees, white sand, and a shimmering turquoise blue sea greets you immediately.

Sadly, I also saw a pile of sargassum that had been taken from the shore. So this horrible algae has impacted this beach as well. But don’t let it deter you from visiting Anse Michel! Because it is such a lovely sight to behold! And who knows, perhaps there won’t even be a sargassum issue when you are there! It is a great place to have all to yourself!

Anse Michel

Boucle du Vauclin

After enjoying the early morning light it is time to continue. Drive to Le Vauclin and park your car near UCPA Le Vauclin . The hike Boucle du Vauclin officially starts at its parking lot. This hike is best done counterclockwise. The first part before arriving at Trou Cochon is more tough and longer in this direction. You will pass several beaches, a small fishing village, mangrove forests… There are several climbs and descents to be done before arriving at this magical mangrove situated in a bay with crystal clear turquoise water called Trou Cochon . Swimming here is pure bliss and the perfect reward after hiking in the hot temperatures! It was one of my favorite things to do in Martinique!

Remember that mangrove ecosystems are quite delicate, so please treat the area with care. Be quiet, pick up after yourself, and watch your step. I also recommend arriving early to beat the crowds! So you may experience the actual atmosphere of this area. From Trou Cochon back to the parking lot it only takes a flat hike of 2.8km.

But if you are not into hiking, you can start the hike from the other direction (clockwise) and park your car somewhere near the T-junction of Anse Simon and Petite Grenade, where the path to Trou Cochon starts and return the same way.

After the hike I drove to the center of Le Vauclin to have lunch at Chez Marie-Alice , a small family run restaurant with local food and extremely friendly owners.

Boucle du Vauclin

Habitation Clément

In the afternoon you can visit the island’s most famous distillery; Habitation Clément . Habitation Clément is a 160-hectare agricultural estate nestled in the municipality of Le François. Visiting this place is quite an experience. Since the estate is quite big they introduced an app to help you guide around the domain.

Its landscaped garden decorated with contemporary sculptures is the first thing you explore. After that you will discover the old distillery , now serving as a rum interpretation center to show how rum is produced, and the 18th century Creole mansion , which is absolutely beautiful! Although rum is no longer distilled at this site, it still goes through the ageing phase here. The sight of hundreds of barrels stacked on top of each other is pretty impressive. I wish I could share the scent with you as well! So good! There is also a modern art center you can visit with art pieces of local artists. All of this is surrounded by massive sugar cane fields.

Habitation Clément

DAY 5 – More amazing things to do in Martinique: hidden waterfalls

Those who followed my Martinique adventures via Instagram , know that I was very unfortunate with the weather. Resulting in me not being able all the waterfall hikes I had planned to do. Still I want to mention some of them in this blog post.

Anse Couleuvre

The most famous waterfall of Martinique is probably Anse Couleuvre all the way in the north of Martinique. You guessed it; you need to wake up really early to get here, since it is quite a long drive to get here and it is a very popular hike. So if you want to beat both traffic and the crowds; leave at 5.00 am when staying in the south! The last part of the road to the parking lot is quite steep and winding so be careful driving here! The hike of about 4 km is quite easy and takes about 2 hours, round trip. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes. At the end of the hike you will encounter the 120 m high waterfall.

Anse Couleuvre

The next two other waterfalls are hidden gems and unoffical hikes . I do not recommend doing them on your own , since this can be quite dangerous. (I was not planning doing them on my own either, contacting locals to join me) Hiking in Martinique is quite different from hiking in, let’s say, Europe. This is raw jungle and there are certain species you have to take into account like venomous snakes. Also the hikes to these waterfalls lead through rivers and often it is not always easy to climb over rocks by yourself, especially when you are not used to it.

Cascade des Rois

The first one is Cascade des Rois . This hike starts near the Depaz distillery, where you need to park the car on the side of the road at a bridge (location pinned on map). Next to the bridge should be the start of the path. Once you reached the river, you need to follow it upstream. Once you reach the intersection of two rivers, you will see a bridge at your left side. Do not walk below the bridge, but follow the river to the right. A little bit further you will find the waterfall! Count 2 hours round trip.

Cascade des Rois

Cascade Ancien Jardin Botanique

Another gorgeous off the beaten track waterfall is the Cascade Ancien Jardin Botanique . It is perfectly combinable with the previous one, since it is not that far from each other. I also pinned the starting point on the map above. Also this time you need to park near a bridge. Then take the maintained path that runs along the river. This trail takes you to cultivated land. At the end of the path, you must cross the Rivière du Jardin des Plantes, to walk along the other side of the bank.

After a while you will have to continue in the bed of the river. When you arrive at an intersection with a large wall of vegetation and coconut tree trunk, you need to turn left of this wall to follow the Fond Sablon ravine. This part is pretty wild and you wil have to climb over rocks. After a few minutes you will finally see the waterfall in the distance!

DAY 6 – Exploring a volcano & waterfall & a mysterious sand tongue

Cascade misorée.

Another unofficlal hike leads to Cascade Misorée . But it is getting more popular by the day. This waterfall is situated on Montagne Pelée, Martinique’s active volcano. To start this hike you need to park the car on the parking lot near Restaurant Le Refuge De L’aileron. After parking go down the road for about ten meters and go around the construction on your left to find the beginning of the trail (it is actually the path used to reach the water capture of Morne Rouge). Follow the trail and cross the wooden bridges.

You will bump into a large wooden ladder leading to a small dry ravine. Descend this ravine wit the help of a rope. After about 30 minutes you will reach a river on your left. Then continue for another half hour until your reach another river on your left. This one is the Falaise river. You need to follow it upstream for about 10 minutes until you reach the picturesque waterfall.

There are a lot of other official hiking trails at Montagne Pelée if you would like to combine this hike with another one.

Le Tombolo de Sainte-Marie

One of the island’s most magical and mysterious places that you absolutely need to add to your road trip itinerary is Îlet Sainte-Marie. Or better said; when the island turns into Le Tombolo de Sainte-Marie from January to May, when a thin sandbar rises from the sea, linking the island to Martinique’s mainland. According to folklore Manman Dlo , a Creole version a mermaid, is believed to visit this location often. The legend’s aim is to warn you to cross with caution. During the early and late tombolo periods, the currents can be severe and the footing can be like quicksand. Next time I definitely want to visit here! Kalash, a rapper from Martinique even wrote a song about it! Check the music video here with images of the tombolo!

DAY 7 – A last relaxing day of your one week Martinique road trip

Sainte-luce , anse mar-ti.

After a whole week of road tripping and exploring all the best things to do in Martinique, you deserve some relaxing! The second part of my trip I stayed near Sainte-Luce in a hotel that was situated along the path that leads from Sainte Luce to Trois Rivières, linking several smaller beaches. So I enjoyed a nice coastal walk from the hotel to the center of Sainte-Luce . Sainte-Luce is a small town with not that much to see, but I loved the street by the sea with all the fish restaurants called Boulevard Kennedy. It was the perfect place to have lunch.

There was also a nice tranquil beach called Anse Mar-Ti. I loved the relaxed vibe and there are a few small restaurants and bars along its shore, where you can relax under the palm trees. There is also a cute swing I could not resist of course!

Sainte-Luce

  • Black sand beaches in the north like Anse Couleuvre, Anse Lévrier and Anse Ceron
  • Presqu’île de la Caravelle : nature reserve of more than 400 hectares containing everything Martinique has to offer like banana plantations, dry forest, tropical forest, mangroves, cliffs and sheltered beaches
  • Distillery Depaz : from March to June, you can watch the machines in operation and see rum being made
  • Fort-de-France : the island’s capital
  • Les Gorges de la Falaise : a guided hike to a waterfall which requires climbing, sliding and jumping. A waterproof camera or a GoPro are more than recommended!
  • Banana Museum : a museum where you will learn everything about the banana! Because it does not only get eaten, it also produces alcohol, medicines, paper, rope, string, various handicrafts, umbrellas, organic plates, soap and glue!
  • Guided Panoramic Shore-Excursion Tour ; you will visit a traditional distillery, explore the historical ruins of Saint Pierre; the Pompeii of the Caribbean and see the famous imitation Church of Balata.

Plan your Martinique road trip

I booked a car via Sunny Cars to explore the island’s meandering roads and lush jungle, since they are really transparent and affordable. Everything you need is already included in the price, including third-party insurance worth at least €7.5 million, damage insurance, theft insurance, damage to glass, tires, floor, or roof, as well as towing and vandalism. There is also unlimited miles included. There will be no more haggling at the counter about additional insurances because everything has already been settled. Unlike many other rental vehicle businesses, which frequently try to charge you extra fees.

I advise to rent a small car, since the roads can be narrow with a lot of turns. Also parking alongside the road will be a lot easier with a smaller car. I drove a manual because I am already used to drive in the mountains, but if you are not comfortable driving steep roads, take an automatic.

I stayed in two hotels. The first one I absolutely loved; Le Panoramic is situated in Les Trois-Îlets near the beach of Anse à l’Ane. The rooms are studios with a seating area, a bathroom, kitchen and terrace. There is a nice swimming pool and they offer breakfast, which you can eat in your room. The room gets cleaned every other day. The hotel is situated on top of a hill offering great views and is only 300 m away from the town center, where you can find a small supermarket to get food, in case you want to cook dinner yourself, and the beach. In town there are also a few restaurants. The staff working here was extremely friendly and helpful.

Le Panoramic Martinique

The second hotel I stayed at was Village Pierre & Vacances Sainte Luce . Which was less my cup of tea, but when I booked this trip, it was one of the few affordable hotels left that was still available (traveling solo is more expensive). It is the perfect place for families since it is a big resort including giant swimming pool, animation team and restaurants on site etc (you get the picture).

The room was spacious and I loved the outside kitchen! But I really disliked that cleaning was not included and linnen not changed if you are not staying a minimum of 7 nights. I even needed to take my own trash out. Luckily I travel solo, so I had a lot of towels. I can’t imagine staying here with kids entering the room after a day at the beach, all sandy… knowing that the room will never get cleaned. The area was nice though! Close to Sainte-Luce and the supermarket was a short beach walk away.

Martinique Rum

But first, a bit of history…martinique rum goes hand in hand with the discovery of america.

Once America and the New World was discovered, the demand for sugar in Europe has exponentially increased. Why? The Caribbean islands offer the perfect environment and conditions for sugar cane plantation.

Soon, the Caribbean islands became the colonial extensions of the various European powers. Spain, Portugal, France, the British Empire, or Netherlands disputed their influence over the Caribbean Sea. And these colonial powers needed to be fueled with a lot of sugar.

Unfortunately for the human kind, this lead to the growth of the slavery phenomena.  The landlords realized that they can use the fermented sugar can juice or the molasses for producing a strong liquor with the purpose of reviving the slaves.

And that is how the dawns of a new type of alcohol appeared.

In addition to this, the origin of the rum lies in the French Antilles, connected to an invention highly used in Martinique and Guadeloupe. In 1694, the French priest Jean-Baptiste Labat invented a way of distilling the sugar cane into rum.

He used an alembic and the standard distillation, known as type Père Labat . This was the trigger for most of the sugar cane plantations to turn into rum distilleries.

What else you should know before exploring the Martinique Rum Distilleries?

Martinique is known for its excellent rum which is appreciated worldwide. Since the 19th century, the local tradition is to produce Rhum Agricole or Rhum Habitant .

Rhum agricole is the French term for rum produced from freshly squeezed sugar cane juice . This type of rum is a very unique feature of the French Antilles (including Martinique), indicating a superior quality.

On the opposite side, most of the world’s producers are using molasses (a bioproduct of sugar refining) as raw material for rum making. The final product is defined by the rum experts as “industrial rum”.

Being processed from fresh sugar cane juice, the Martinican rum is more aromatic. No less than 100 kg of sugar cane need to be processed to get 10 litres of rum .

In 1996, the Martinican Rhum Agricole obtained an AOC recognition. The term means “ Appellation d’origine contrôlée ” (Protected Designation of Origin).

Types of rum and distilleries – good to know when in Martinique

Regardless if you are in a supermarket or at a distillery, you should know that several types of rum. They have different qualities and prices.

  • The white rum has a clear color. It is not aged and it is consumed directly after distillation. Usually, in the Caribbean (not only in Martinique), the white rum is used for mixing with juices in the so-called Ti’Punch and Planteur.
  • Dark rum (rhum paille, rhum ambré) is agricole rum that has been aged in the barrel for 18 months. It is a younger rum with a golden color and is used mostly in cocktails and for cooking.
  • Old rum (rhum vieux) from Martinique is highly appreciated around the world. It is aged in casks, usually oak barrels, for at least 3 years. The rum gets its dark color and aromas from the wooden barrel.

Also, in Martinique, there are 2 types of distilleries depending on their activity . There are the so-called smoking distilleries , still in service and producing rum.

On the opposite side, the non-smoking distilleries , no longer produce rum locally. Their rum is distilled by another active factory and is often aged and bottled on the spot.

A tour of rum distilleries – a different kind of perfect way to explore Martinique

When we marked Martinique on our bucket list, it never crossed our minds to visit so many distilleries. We surely knew we would bring a bottle of the finest Martinican rum, but all we wanted was to discover and relax on the beautiful beaches.

While arriving at the accommodation, our host, Priscilia (who was working at Clement Distillery) introduced us in the atmosphere of the island. She recommended some cool places to discover on this surprising island.

Among them, some amazing distilleries that we are now about to reveal for you .

Martinique rum map best distilleries

Why do we recommend having a tour of the rum distilleries when in Martinique?

There would be several reasons…

First of all , you (as we did) will discover that Martinique is not only about beach, yachting, scuba diving and snorkeling. The distilleries are spread along the island, some close to the shore and some in the mountainous part of Martinique.

Thus, when driving to the distilleries you will experience amazing landscape changes. In hours, you will travel from the coastal area with its blue water into endless bananas or sugar cane plantations.

Moving towards the mountain side, you will pass through narrow valleys and luxurious tropical forest . Really incredible.

Second of all, a rum tour offers to any tourist an amazing opportunity to learn about the creole culture and history . Every distillery has its own story and tradition.

Thirdly , you will have the chance to experience a different but pleasant kind of relaxation . In fact, most of the distilleries are large domains, with mansions and splendid yards and lakes. Some of them can compete with any botanical garden or park.

Last but not least, all the rum distilleries offer tasting sessions . These can ease your decision when you want to buy. But they are also a good opportunity for getting social with other tourists and the locals .

Wherever you are located in Martinique, a rum distillery is never far away.

Rarely can you find an environment in such a harmony with a product. Stunning landscapes, warm people, amazing history and traditions… In Martinique they all invite you to immerse yourself in the culture of rum.

The rum making season is February to June, when you will be able to actually see the distilleries operating. Over 10 of them are welcoming visitors, free or on a paid entrance.

Here are our top 5 Martinique rum Distilleries :

1. Rhum J.M

Location: Rhumerie de Fonds Préville – Macouba Martinique Entrance: free

Martinique Rum Rhum JM Distillery exceptional micro-climate

We found J.M Distilleries in the very northern part of Martinique, surrounded by sugar cane plantations and a lush nature. It lies at the bottom of River Roche’s valley.

Rhum J.M Distillery is one of the smallest and oldest rum producers on the island, being established in 1790. Smaller quantities of bottles per year are compensated by the exceptional quality of the rum.

The magic of J.M rum is coming from an exceptional micro-climate . Located at the foot of Mount Pelée and exposed to the tropical sea breezes, the owners are cultivating their sugar cane in a rich and fertile volcanic soil.

Due to its unique conditions, Rhum J.M Distillery harvests its own cane for production with a delay of 30 to 60 days comparing to other producers on the island. As a result, J.M rum gets a distinctive flavor, being one of our favorite .

Just as important as the soil, Rum J.M has the exclusive benefit to use pure volcanic spring water rich in minerals sourced from the heart of Mount Pelée. The purity of the water is a key contributor to the quality of Rum J.M.

Once you get here, you will get lost exploring the machines, the gardens, the barrel deposit, tasting saloon and many others. Inside the domain, the visitors can also admire the scent garden planted with species which are used to flavor the rum with their rich aromatic scents.

But what we found particularly awesome was the olfactory workshop . For us, this place turned our visit into a unique sensory experience to discover the bouquet of each of the 7 J.M rums, as well as 7 characteristic olfactory notes to appreciate all the aromatic richness.

Rum J.M is well known all around the globe and consistently wins top honors at the largest international competitions (Paris, Brussels, Chicago, Miami and San Francisco). J.M Aged Rums are especially popular for their smoothness and character.

Saint-James is the oldest brand of Martinican rum . The distillery was founded in Saint-Pierre in 1765. However, the main market of the distillery were the British colonies in North America. For making it more marketable, the rum took under the name Saint-James. This name was of a prestigious family in the British Empire (nowadays, the United Kingdom).

In 1902, the volcano on Pelée Mountain erupted generating a catastrophic moment in Martinique’s history. The city of Saint-Pierre burned to ashes and there were around 30.000 victims. After this tragic event, the activity of Saint James distillery shifted soon towards 3 new locations. These were Saint-Joseph in 1911, Le Lamentin in 1912, and Case-Pilote in 1929.

A limestone is Saint James Distillery’s history was 1973 . The owners moved the production in Sainte-Marie, situated on the east coast of Martinique. First and foremost, the main guest of the  inauguration  was t he Prime Minister of France at that time, Jacques Chirac.

Saint James Distillery celebrates the rum culture

Every year, Saint James is the host of 2 rum festivals in Martinique : the Harvest Festival in June and the Rhum Festival in December.

Even so, if you are in Sainte-Marie, allow yourself a few hours for visiting the impressive domain of Saint James. The entrance to the museum is free and it will be time well spent for sure.

Enter in the picturesque mansion. You will discover a beautiful collection of vintage ads, photos, bottles, and machinery . Also, a stylish bar on the ground floor is open for the free rum tasting sessions.

In another building, you will discover the Alembic Museum . The place is a collection of metal machineries, used along the centuries in the rum producing process. Next, you can visit the park and station with its locomotives which once transported the sugar cane and bananas.

Even if you do not take the tour, make sure you do not miss visiting the Cave à Millésimes . This cellar is the very special place where rare and old bottles wait for the right buyer. How old are they? Some of them are since 1885.

L’Habitation Clément is a vast agricultural domain of 160 hectares . You find it in the village of François, in the South-East of Martinique.

Formerly called Domaine de l’Acajou, L’Habitation Clément’s origins are in the 18th century. In 1887 doctor Homère Clément bought the domain. It will last until the 1st World War for the owner to found the distillery.

By far L’Habitation Clément is the most visited rum distillery in Martinique . Every year, more than 100.000 visitors are taking a journey back in time through the history of the Creole and rum culture.

Habitation Clement Martinique Barrels

When we visited the distillery, the domain was quite crowded. In Martinique, L’Habitation Clément is surely the most advertised in magazines, billboards, and commercials.

But once we got inside, we discovered a surprising 16 hectares of lush botanic gardens gravitating around the main house . The heart of L’Habitation Clément’s history, in 1996 the creole house was ranked in the category of the historical monuments of Martinique .

In short, the tou ristic activity inside L’Habitation Clément is created around two concepts . One is the world of rum , based around the antique distillery. And second is the Creole life, focused on the main home.

Let us talk about the L’Habitation Clément’s highlights – the most known rum distillery in Martinique

The main house: located on a hill having a panoramic view of the surroundings. A significant moment for this house was in 1991 when it hosted the Franco-American summit. The main actors were the French President François Mitterrand and US President George Bush Senior who met after the first Gulf War.

The Old Distillery is now transformed into a rum information centre. In fact, the building has several levels connected by footbridges. This place is an impressive collection of industrial machines. Nonetheless, it is an excellent place to learn about rum’s producing process.

The four cellars are hosting well-selected wooden barrels in which the rum is getting old. Organized into pyramids of barrels, more than 2 million litres of rum are enriching their character and flavours. After they stayed enough, the cellar masters are assembling the rums into special or vintage editions.

The gardens were definitely our favourites. To sum up, the park is a collection of more than 300 tropical plants. Among them, the palm groves are dominating the edge of a beautiful lake.

Spread across the green meadows, you can admire old pieces of industrial machineries blended with contemporaneous forms of visual expressions (coloured metal sculptures).

As always, a tour is much more pleasant when it ends in the liquor shop . Here, you can taste a various and fine range of Clement rum but also their special fruity liqueurs.

4. Rhum HSE Habitation St-Etienne

Location: Habitation Saint-Etienne, Gros-Morne 97213, Martinique Entrance : free

It is time to enter the heart of Martinique. We drive through narrow roads in luxurious greenery . Our driving speed is significantly decreasing. And not because of the road’s difficulty but we cannot decide where to stop to take the most breath-taking photo.

One thing is certain. If you come from the east side of the island, the road to HSE Habitation is an incredible experience inside Martinique’s tropical forests . And once you get there, you will find a place not crowded at all, leaving you the chance to enjoy it even more.

The history of HSE Habitation St-Etienne goes back in 1882 . It is the year when Amédée Aubéry, a young captain and soon to become a powerful landowner in Martinique buys “La Maugée”. This was a sugar cane refinery covering over 400 hectares from Gros Morne to Saint Joseph.

Soon after, Amédée Aubéry transformed the sugar refinery into a rum distillery. He expanded the factory and built a beautiful façade with curved ventilation windows . Nowadays, the architectural innovations offer a particular charm to the building.

Rhum HSE Habitation – history, art and…rum

The constructions reflect a typical farm in Martinique. Today, this domain is one of the last and one of the finest examples of Martinique’s heritage. Visitors can admire the beautiful architectural structures of the main mansion.

In the near proximity, there are also the old workers’ barracks. Due to its unique architectural style, Rhum HSE Habitation gained a place in the inventory of Martinique’s Historical Monuments.

Once we contemplated the building, we continued our tour inside HSE Habitation by relaxing in an delightful garden . On a side there is small lake margined by palm trees that emphasize the freshness and the purity of this unspoiled area.

The ideal place to end the journey at HSE Habitation is getting back to the main mansion where a special place is waiting for its visitors. Here, the so-called “Les Foudres HSE” is an exhibition place dedicated to different aesthetic disciplines . Visual artists, photographers, writers, poets, and musicians have the chance to make their art alive in the eyes of the tourists.

It also the place where visitors learn, scent and taste HSE’s exceptional range of rums. Such a cool place to get social with other tourists or just to find out more about Martinique from the HSE’s staff.

Of course, in the end you can buy your favorites ones.

5. Trois Rivières

Location: D7, Sainte-Luce 97228, Martinique Entrance: paid

Martinique Rum Trois Rivieres main entrance

While exploring the breathtaking Southern beaches of Martinique we had a detour to Trois Rivières Plantation. The domain is easily recognizable by an imposing windmill built in the middle of the property. Without a doubt, you can figure out that the mill is also the emblem of Trois Rivières’s blue label.

Trois Rivières gets its name from the three rivers: Bois d’Inde, Oman and St. Pierre. These rivers are the borders of the original estate which was first established in 1660.

Until 1905, the functionality of the domain is resumed only on sugar cane plantation and sugar production. This was the year when Amédée Aubéry (the same guy that owns HSE Habitation) is buying Trois Rivières. Having already the know-how, he switches the activity from the sugar production into rum manufacturing. Aubéry invests also in modernizing the site.

Martinique Rum Trois Rivieres garden

Today, the Trois Rivières domain is made of 700 hectares of sugar cane facing the sun in the far South of Martinique.

The sugar cane fields stretch along the waterfront. Their roots go in clay and rocky soil, rich in magnesium.  As a result, the harvested sugar cane has a higher sugar content which will enrich and refine the flavor of the rums .

Trois Rivières is especially famous for the quality of their aged Agricole Rhums and their rare vintage varieties.

Some considerations about rum classification in Martinique (and not only 🙂 )

Understanding the classifications will not only help you select your suitable rum but will also impress your friends when socializing.

As a starting point, we should state that Martinique has a tradition in aging the rum in oak barrels .

One of the reasons is that the wood absorbs the unpleasant residues of the distillation process such as sulfur.

Secondly, the more a rum stays in a wooden barrel before stepping into a bottle, the more it gains new flavors and colors (extracted from the wood essence). While it rests into the oak barrel, the rum is evaporating every year (the angel’s share) but its smoothness gets more refined.

Martinique Rum Tour

So, let’s proceed with the rum classifications from the lowest to the best quality:

Rhum Paille ou Ambré:

Is considered to be a starter when speaking about rum aging. It must be kept in barrels at least 18 months.

VS Very Special  Rum  (or other expressions such as “Very Superior, “Trois Étoiles” (Three Stars): Aged in barrels for least 2 years. However, if you’re dealing with a rum made of a mixture of other types of rums (of different ages), the rule of 2 years aging applies to the youngest rum.

VO  Rum  (Very Old) or Vieux Rhum: at least 3 years spent in barrels. In this case, we can also refer to the rum as “Old”.

martinique rum tour cellar dark barrels

VSOP  Rum   (Very Superior Old Pale): aged in barrels for at least 4 years. Other names used for this category include: “Very Superior Old Pale” and “Réserve”, or, as specified by the AOC Martinique, “Très Vieux”, “Réserve Spéciale” or “Cuvée Spéciale”.

XO  Rum  (Extra Old) or Out of Age (Hors d’âge). Rums in this category are those that have aged in barrels for at least 6 years. In the case of the AOC Martinique, the producers are also using terms like “Grande Réserve”.

Exceptional vintage rum:

Here we are talking about extremely old rums, the most exceptional being surely the vintages. Besides the age, for a rum to be exceptional, it must meet other 2 strict criteria.

First, the rum cannot be a mixture of several rums aged over different years. Secondly, the sugar cane must be harvested in an exceptional year from the quality point of view. Depending on the natural conditions, the harvesting year can differ. As a consequence, the year of rum’s creation is important as well.

These rums are exceptionally tasty and they come with extraordinary prices. The most expensive we saw on our trip was 1.550 EUR a 750 ml bottle from the 1950s.

Key takeaways of a Martinique rum tour

First of all, our advice is to do it. Let yourself carried away to the closest rum distillery. Chances of disliking it are extremely small.

Focus on the road . You will be able to observe Martinique’s nature better than you could have imagined when planning your holiday.

Enjoy the destination: Take your time and visit as much as you like. If you have curiosities, just ask the staff.

Taste several rum specialties and decide what you like. If you are not convinced, do not rush buying it directly at the rum’s shop. Just take a photo of the selected bottle and its price. You will definitely find it later on, even cheaper, in a supermarket like Carrefour or Super U.

Relax in the beautiful gardens and get social with other tourists. Last but not least, take some cool photos to remember the beautiful and full-of-flavor time spent in Martinique.

If you find this advice useful, u se the share buttons to spread our blog post with your friends on your social media platform.

À votre santé!

How to find the right gym for you — at the right price

7 things to keep in mind when shopping for a gym membership.

tours a martinique

Whether you are starting a new exercise regimen, coming back from an injury, or have relocated, finding a gym or health club that fits your needs and budget takes an investment of time, energy and, of course, money. It’s not unlike buying a car: You need to search for the best deal, take advantage of promotions, test drive several options and sift through the contractual fine print.

The fitness industry is moving away from its self-inflicted reputation of treating clients as marks and always upselling, but it’s still important to do your homework to find the right fit for you. “The best gym or studio should be an environment you want to return to and feel comfortable in within your price point,” says Sarah Luna, president of Xponential , a franchise of boutique fitness brands including Club Pilates and Pure Barre.

Here’s what to consider before committing to a fitness facility.

Learn about the options

Depending on where you live, you may find one or more supersize chains, luxury amenity-filled clubs, independently owned gyms and/or specialty (such as Pilates or barre) studios. Before shopping around, figure out which type of environment will help you meet your personal fitness goals. Then, make a list of your must-have amenities (a dedicated cardio area, free weights, a private studio, a swimming pool, on-site child care, a locker room, showers, sauna, etc.) to help you narrow your options.

Prioritize convenience

Ideally your fitness facility will be within five miles — or a 10- to 15-minute drive — from home or work. Anything farther increases the chances of logistical issues (think: traffic) that can keep you from getting there. Search online for fitness, barre, Pilates or gym + near me to identify the closest options, Luna says.

Hours also matter, says Bryce Henson, CEO of Fit Body Boot Camp . Look at the general operating hours as well as how late and early classes are offered, and whether there are weekend sessions. If the only class you’re interested in is at 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, can you make that work with your schedule? Ask front desk staff about how easy it is to book a spot in classes and gauge their reaction. “You want classes and a schedule that can be built into your routine,” Luna says. “If you can’t get into the ones you want, likely this isn’t the place for you.”

Take a tour

Once you’ve narrowed your list, tour your top options, with an eye toward the look and feel of each place. First impressions count, says Nick Barshick, chief operating officer for Chuze Fitness , a chain of nearly 60 centers across the West, South and Southeast. Is the facility clean and well-maintained? Is equipment wiped down after each use? Is the equipment dated or out of order? No detail is too small. Check lockers and restrooms, as well as the exercise studios and child-care space. Also consider safety. Visit before sunrise or after dusk to see the lighting in the parking lot and building, as well as how far you have to walk to the entrance.

Sample before you commit

Any reputable business should allow you to take some classes or try out the facility at no cost. If a gym won’t do this, consider it a red flag and look elsewhere. Planet Fitness offers a one-day pass, while 24 Hour Fitness lets you test a facility for three days, and Chuze offers a seven-day trial. A free trial allows you to get a realistic idea of how the place operates. How does the staff make you feel? Do instructors welcome new students to classes? Is the place quiet or mobbed at the time you are most likely to attend? Most important: Do you feel out of place or like you’re part of an inclusive community?

Ask about deals and promotions

When asked if they offer any special rates, “the answer will always be ‘yes,’” at pretty much any gym, Barshick says. But generally speaking, the best deals are offered in January, followed by the summer. You may also find some sale prices over Black Friday. Also ask if the facility offers any incentives, perks or discounts if you refer friends or family, Henson says.

Be leery of long-term contracts

“If an outfit wants a three months or longer contract, that’s a red flag to me, because it likely comes with a cancellation fee,” Henson says. “I like a low barrier of six weeks or less.” The best deals, Luna says, are programs that ask for a 60- to 90-day commitment to start, then shift to a month-to-month membership or offer class packs — say 10 passes that can be used over a three-month period.

Read the fine print

Look over your contract carefully to make sure you understand all of the policies. It should be easy to cancel. Some gyms still require 30 days notice to cancel a membership, while others offer immediate cancellation through their online portal or app. Also make note of any penalties for terminating early. Some facilities charge a flat cancellation fee, while others may ding you for an additional month.

Don’t be surprised by an annual fee of $40 to $60. This is industry practice for most high-value, low-price gym chains such as Planet Fitness, Crunch, 24 Hour Fitness and Chuze. The rationale is that consumers seem to prefer paying a low monthly rate plus an annual fee to paying slightly more each month, with no annual fee.

“Add up all the fees you pay and divide by 12 so you know what you are actually paying per month,” Barshick says. Also, watch out for any hidden charges, such as processing fees, towel service fees, locker rental or an automatic monthly increase after the first year.
