Lake Como tour from Nesso to Torno

What makes Como unique?

First of all, its the deepest Lake in Europe.

The mild climate of this area has made it a retreat of the rich and famous since the ancient times. A lot of famous people vsited the lake for as long as we can trace.

Each season has its perks and a lot of activities are available for both the hot and the cold season. With fresh water and hot sun in summer, colorfoul autumns and snowy mountains in winter, Lago di Como is just the perfect place to spend your holidays.

Lake Como

Lake Como Tours 2019

Without doubt, sailing the waters of Lake Como is the best for taking a break from the everyday chaotic world.

Learn the real meaning of “ La bella vita ” and “ La dolce vita ” by hiring a boat and cruise the lake.

Day-trips by boat and historic houses tours go for the most in summer. While spring and autumn are made for hiking and city tours, winter is perfect for skiing.

There’s nothing like a private tour to fully appreciate the beauty of the lake.

In the unfortunate event the weather is not excellent, museums and old churches may be the best place to find a shelter. Just kidding, our historical and cultural heritage is unmatched!

In other words, do not hesitate any longer and come here to discover new places and sharing a glass of good wine with the local people.

Hello from Lake Como!

A personal note from the author. When people ask me “why you started this project?” I like to tell them this short story. There was a friend from abroad who had the chance to pay me a quick visit. Long story short, it was on his last day in town something unexpected happened. While I was taking him to the railway station, I noticed he was deeply immersed in his own thoughts with his eyes fixed on the landscape in front of us. Once questioned, He said he was completely mesmerized by the beautiful panorama on the way from Cernobbio to Como. And then he suddenly asked me a simple question: “Why do you like so much travelling abroad?.. I mean, look at this. You live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. You have all this just outside the door..” His words were the drive force I needed to start this blog.

What travelers say about their trips to Lake Como

Travel tips for lake como trips.

Our trips to Lake Como are designed to include a mix of guided sightseeing and free time so you can see everything on your Lake Como wish list. Here are some can’t-miss things to do on our tours of Lake Como.

  • Take a boat cruise . It’s one of the  can’t-miss excursions on tour in Italy ! Staffer Claudia agrees that it was one of her highlights from her tour of Lake Como. “The best way to experience Lake Como is by boat, and the  Lake Como Cruise excursion  is a must,” she said. “You hop on a small cruise with your group and get to spend the afternoon exploring beautiful lakeside villages like Bellagio, and marveling at some of Italy’s most stunning estates, including George Clooney’s breathtaking Villa Oleandra.”
  • Stroll along the Lake Como Greenway.  If you enjoy taking in striking views while you walk, this nature path is one for the books. Beginning in Colonno, the path takes walkers through a few of Lake Como’s villages, past colorful gardens, and of course, past stunning villas. You won’t want the trail to end!
  • Shop on Via Giuseppe Garibaldi . If you’re looking for a place to shop for authentic, local goods, this road—the main road of Bellagio’s Old Town—is where you’ll want to begin.
  • Take in the views from Punta Spartivento.  If you’re a bit tired after your shopping trip in the Old Town, this viewing point in Bellagio is the perfect place to slow down and take in more beauty. The foot bridge out onto the lake will give you a 360-degree view of the lake’s famous “branches.”
  • Walk along Sentiero del Viandante.  Craving more nature walks? Good, because we have another one for you! This path on the eastern coast of the lake dates back to the Roman period and has some interesting spots for you to stop along the way, including the Castle of Vezio that sits on a hilltop overlooking the lake.

Generally speaking, the best time to visit the Lake Como area is from  April to October , when the weather is warm and mild. But, like  traveling in Italy , the best time to travel on tours to Lake Como depends on factors such as your ideal weather and whether you want to experience any cultural events that take place during certain times of year.

For more tips on choosing the best time of year for travel to Lake Como, check out our  Ultimate Lake Como Travel Guide .

Dozens of spectacular sights await travelers on Lake Como tours. Here are a few you can see while traveling on our Lake Como guided tours.

  • Bellagio.  We visit the charming hilltop town of Bellagio on our tour of  Lake Como, the Italian Riviera & Venice  for a reason! Bellagio is right on the tip of land where the two “branches” of the lake come together and has earned its title as the Pearl of Lake Como. It’s famous for its villas along the water, narrow cobblestone pathways, and boutiques selling local food, perfumes, leather goods, and keepsakes.
  • Villa Carlotta.  Located in the town of Tremezzina, right across the lake from Bellagio, this impressive 17-acre property features ornate gardens, an on-site museum, and sweeping views of Lake Como.
  • The Como-Brunate Funicular.  Want to keep soaking in gorgeous views of the lake? Look no further than the funicular railway that connects the city of Como with the village of Brunate. It made its first journey in 1894; today it runs dozens of times daily for tourists and locals alike.
  • Forte di Fuentes.  If you’re a history buff, these hilltop ruins—among the few remains of Spanish domination in this area—are a must-see.
  • Villa del Balbianello.  Consisting of two residential buildings, a church, a terrace, and elaborate gardens, this spot has made cameos in many famous films. Head inside during your free time while on tour in Lake Como and you’ll be surrounded by sculptures, artifacts, and glass paintings.

Lake Como tours can include everything from casual strolls through charming towns to cruises to meals at elegant restaurants. You’ll be ready with these essentials in your suitcase.

  • A bathing suit.  Travelers on summertime Lake Como tours won’t want to miss taking a dip in the lake’s cool waters.
  • Comfortable walking shoes.  The Lake Como area is laced with scenic walking paths, and sensible shoes will make exploring all the more enjoyable.
  • Light layers.  On our tours of Lake Como you can experience a variety of temperatures and weather conditions, from bright sun to light rain to wind. You’ll be ready for anything with a light jacket or wrap in tow.
  • Sunscreen.  The sun can be strong in Italy, so bring a hat, sunglasses, a light wrap, and sunscreen.

Italy serves up some of the best food in the world, and our Lake Como tour packages include opportunities to sample Italian classics and regional, Lombardian specialties alike. Here are several to try while traveling on our Lake Como trips.

  • Polenta.  This dish originated in Lombardy (the region of Italy where Lake Como is located) and is a must-try. Polenta is boiled cornmeal that can be served hot and creamy, or as a loaf once it has had time to solidify. It has a mild flavor, so is often topped with delicious cheese, cooked vegetables, and sauces.
  • Risotto alla Milanesa.  This simple yet sophisticated dish gets its bold yellow color from the addition of saffron.
  • Tortelli di zucca.  This pumpkin-stuffed pasta dish is available year-round in the Lombardy region of Italy. Made with fresh pumpkin puree, a blend of spices, Parmesan, crushed amaretti biscuits, and candied fruits, this delicate balance of sweet and savory is what makes the dish unique.
  • Torrone.  You will find that nougat is a popular dessert or snack in many European countries. The Lombardy region is known for its “Torrone di Cremona.” There’s even a celebration in Cremona in honor of this sweet treat made with honey, almonds, and vanilla.
  • Panettone.  Filled with candied fruit, almonds, and honey, this festive bread is usually served around Christmastime in Italy. You can find it at European Christmas markets, but be sure you try it while you’re in Lombardy, where it originated.
  • Gelato.  If you ask us, no trip to Italy is complete with a cone or cup teeming with this beloved Italian treat. Staffer Claudia recalls, “When summer starts, there are so many gelaterias to choose from… Don’t forget to add a delicious waffle cookie to the gelato of your choice!”

Wondering what to wash it all down with? Check out our Ultimate Lake Como Travel Guide for tips on what to drink →

One of the best ways to get around Lake Como is by boat. We recommend taking a boat ride (or two!) to take in everything this spectacular region has to offer. Once you’ve docked, the best way to get around the small lakeside towns is on foot.

Luxury Lake Como Boat Tours

Lake Como is world-renowned as an elegant and luxurious vacation destination. With fans like George and Amal Clooney, it’s no wonder that travelers flock to Lake Como in search of glitz, glamour and the finer things in life. If you’re among them, reserve an upscale boat tour serving a 3-course gourmet dinner along with wine and swanky cocktails. To recreate that old Hollywood glamour, make like James Bond aboard a classic wooden-paneled vessel, or try a yacht complete with concierge service to cater to your every whim and need. If you’re looking for the best of the best, Lake Como has you covered!

How Much Does a Private Lake Como Boat Tour Cost?

Of course, a destination as beautiful and popular as Lake Como is no stranger to crowds. If you’re looking to get away from it all, a private tour is the perfect solution. Whether you’re looking for a romantic experience or just a reprieve from the crowds, private cruises cater to a variety of interests. They can include fishing, dining and sightseeing. Best of all, these exclusive excursions can be tailored to fit your personal interests and needs.

A private boat tour will, of course, come at a steeper cost. It will depend on the length of cruise, number of guests and itinerary. You’ll find private boat tours can cost anywhere from a few hundred dollars for a shorter tour or into the thousands for longer voyages.

Lake Como Boat Tour on a Budget

VARENNA Lake Como

Varenna is a picturesque and traditional village, located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, Italy . It is an essential stop for anyone wishing to visit one of the most typical and peaceful towns of the lake.

This small village, where you can still breathe in the traditions of yesteryear (above all, fishing), is home to elegant villas with botanical gardens (such as Villa Monastero and Villa Cipressi ) and beautiful walks between history and nature ( Castle of Vezio and Sentiero del Viandante ).

Here’s my guide to the best things to do in Varenna , where everything is located within walking distance.

Discover what awaits you in Varenna, on Lake Como!

Varenna, Lake Como, Italy

THE TOWN CENTER Picturesque walks, tradition, and a bay not to be missed

Riva Grande, Varenna, Lake Como

If you arrive in Varenna from another town on the lake, most likely via ferry , you will land near the Passeggiata degli Innamorati (Walk of lovers), one of the most inspiring and romantic walks along Lake Como.

You will enjoy a beautiful view of the lake and begin to notice, after a few minutes’ walk, the charming little streets going up into the interior of the village.

Another of the most beautiful things to see in Varenna is Piazza San Giorgio, the town’s central square that houses the Church of San Giorgio .

The church was built in the 14th century in a style somewhere between Romanesque and Gothic and houses numerous paintings from the late 15th and 16th centuries. As you look down, you can see the solid pavement, made entirely of traditional local black marble .

VILLA MONASTERO & VILLA CIPRESSI Two lush and elegant botanical gardens

Gardens of Villa Monastero, Varenna, Lake Como (Italy)

Villa Monastero

A visit to  Villa Monastero is definitely one of the best things to do in Varenna. The villa, located a stone’s throw from the central Piazza San Giorgio, was once an old monastery that later became a patrician residence.

When visiting this famous villa, you will also have the opportunity to see Casa Museo , a museum that collects four centuries of history in an elegant setting with fine decorations and furnishings.

Keep in mind that Villa Monastero is open to the public only from March to November (except for some special winter openings ). The cost of a regular ticket is €10 . Learn more about Villa Monastero !

Gardens of Villa Cipressi, Varenna

Villa Cipressi

Adjacent to Villa Monastero is  Villa Cipressi , a 4-star hotel near the town center of Varenna.

The complex is surrounded by centuries-old terraced gardens  that reach the shores of Lake Como, a perfect location for unforgettable weddings and holidays.

Villa Cipressi’s name comes from the beautiful and ancient cypress trees that are still found in its gardens.

Unlike Villa Monastero, this villa is currently a  luxury hotel that you can book for your vacations on Lake Como. For this reason, unless you are a guest of the hotel, you will only have the opportunity to visit the extensive gardens, full of Mediterranean and exotic plants .

The cost of a regular ticket is €8 (€19 for the combined ticket that includes admission to Villa Monastero).

A few tips for your stay in Varenna

CASTLE OF VEZIO Breathtaking views, ghosts and... legends!

Castello di Vezio, Varenna

The Castle of Vezio is a medieval fortress that has stood for more than a thousand years on the promontory overlooking Varenna.

The terrace adjacent to the castle offers a breathtaking view of Lake Como and is home to the “ ghosts ,” which are white plaster sculptures made each year in the summer with the help of people who pose for an hour.

Also noteworthy is the permanent exhibit dedicated to the Lariosaurus , an extinct marine reptile from the Middle Triassic, which gave rise to a legend similar to that of the Loch Ness monster.

In addition, on Friday and Saturday evenings in summer (usually from early June to early September) the castle organizes aperitifs on the panoramic terrace at a cost of €35 per person.

The castle, open from March to November, can be reached by two roads:

  • the shorter but rather steep road starts next to the hotel Montecodeno and the walk takes about 20-30 minutes, also offering shelter from the sun
  • the more scenic alternative is the Scabium trail , the beginning of which is almost in front of Villa Monastero; it takes 40 minutes and is also rather steep, but offers splendid views of Lake Como (although it is mostly under the sun).

FIUMELATTE & SENTIERO DEL VIANDANTE Two must-see places for nature lovers

Mouth of the Fiumelatte stream, Varenna

The hamlet of Fiumelatte and its river

At a 10-15 minute walk from the south of Varenna is the hamlet of Fiumelatte , crossed by the river of the same name.

Fiumelatte is a very special river: besides having a white appearance that makes you think of milk, this short watercourse flows only between March and September  (except in cases of drought), while in the other months it is perfectly dry.

An easy walk of about 15 minutes from the hamlet of Fiumelatte leads to the source of the river , allowing splendid views of Lake Como and Bellagio.

Sentiero del Viandante

The Sentiero del Viandante is a stage trek that runs along the entire eastern shore of Lake Como. It has a length of 45 km (30 miles) and is suitable for everyone , but due to its length it is recommended to divide the route into at least 4 stages.

If you want to get a taste of this beautiful nature trail, I recommend visiting the Varenna tourist website , which describes some possible routes to take starting from the town center.

BOAT TOURS & BEACHES Sit back, relax and enjoy the view!

Private boat tours.

If you are looking for private boat tours from Varenna, here are some options that may be right for you!

Venetian Limousine

Public boat tours

❗Looking for information about public boat service? Read my guide to boats and ferries on Lake Como !

Varenna’s pier is located in Via Imbarcadero . Here you can catch boats to any town on the lake (as anticipated, central lake towns such as Bellagio, Menaggio, and Tremezzo are only 15-20 minutes away by boat).

Plan your trips on the Navigazione Laghi website and, when possible, purchase tickets online or go to the ticket office in advance of the boat departure time.

Beaches in Varenna

Varenna’s main beach is called Olivedo Lido – Lido di Varenna and is equipped with sunbeds, deck chairs and a boat dock.

As throughout Lake Como, there are several small public beaches in various areas (e.g., here ), but being free beaches, they are often occupied by tourists and locals especially in summer.

The Insider’s Guide to Portofino

Portofino’s charming piazza, high-end shopping and dining, and natural splendor result in a memorable Italian vacation spot that caters to travelers who want to unwind and enjoy the finer things in life.

tours of lake como italy

The Italian Riviera is dotted with beautiful seaside towns, but perhaps none as lovely as Portofino. The harbor locale, known for its colorful pastel buildings, Old World allure and famous visitors, is a popular summer destination for good reason. Its charming piazza, high-end shopping and dining, and natural splendor result in a memorable vacation spot that caters to travelers who want to unwind and enjoy the finer things in life. Like so many Italian Riviera locations , Portofino isn’t the easiest place to get to, but it’s accessible from the airports in Genoa and Milan , and the Santa Margherita Ligure–Portofino train station is just about three miles from the main town.

Located on the Ligurian Sea, Portofino is adjacent to several other Mediterranean coastal towns, including Paraggi, Rapallo and Santa Margherita Ligure. Visitors can also combine a getaway to Portofino with a day trip exploration of Cinque Terre, found to the south, or to Lake Como , a short drive north. Ferries and private boats connect many of the local destinations during the summer months, and the area welcomes hikers, golfers and cyclists. Although Portofino itself is small, travelers can find a lot to see and eat in the fishing town and in the surrounding Ligurian coast region, including kayaking, wine tasting and shopping. Whether you want to relax on a private beach, explore the rugged coastline or indulge in the best Italian food , here is your complete travel guide to Portofino.

The Luxury Traveler's Guide to Portofino

Belmond splendido mare, grand hotel bristol resort and spa, eight hotel portofino, grand hotel miramare, piazza martiri dell'olivetta, bagni fiore, abbey of san fruttuoso, la portofinese, outdoor portofino, ristorante da i gemelli, langosteria, cracco portofino, ristorante puny, where to stay.

  • Via Roma, 2, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

Belmond’s opulent Splendido Mare is one of Portofino’s top hotels, a haven for jet-setters and Hollywood A-listers. Located in the heart of town, it features only 14 rooms and suites, giving it an intimate, guest house vibe and ensuring a high level of service. It’s a sister property to the larger Belmond Hotel Splendido, located in the Portofino hills, and guests at both hotels have access to the Dior spa, saltwater swimming pool and restaurants. Splendido Mare’s eatery, DaV Mare, showcases Italian cuisine in a casual fine dining setting alongside the harbor. Guests can also take advantage of the free shuttle between the hotel and Bagni Fiore beach in nearby Paraggi. Book the top-floor Ava Gardner Suite for the best amenities and beautiful views of Portofino.

  • Via Aurelia Orientale, 369, 16035 Rapallo GE, Italy

Many of the hotels right in Portofino are small and lack high-end offerings, but the adjacent town of Rapallo welcomes many luxury travelers to the historic Grand Hotel Bristol Resort and Spa. The grand dame hotel, home to the expansive Erre Spa, embraces holiday indulgence with an outdoor pool and the private Marina di Bardi Beach Club, which makes its debut this May. The rooms and suites are contemporary, with memorable views of the sea and coast (opt for a Panoramic Suite for the best scenery), and guests can expect personable, discerning service. There are several restaurants and bars, including poolside pizzeria the Flamingo and rooftop fine dining spot Le Cupole.

  • Via Milite Ignoto, 30, 16038 Santa Margherita Ligure GE, Italy

Italian brand Eight Hotels has a centrally-situated property in Portofino, a short walk from the main piazza. It’s chic and intimate, with rooms and suites that are more about comfort than they are about views. The vibe is relaxed, although guests can expect amenities like butler service, an outdoor Jacuzzi, and its own Porsche electric charging station. The hotel has a charming sister property in Paraggi (this one has the best views) and guests of both can enjoy the private beach club in Paraggi Bay.

  • Via del Fondaco, 11, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

Located in nearby Santa Margherita Ligure, Grand Hotel Miramare is a good option for travelers who want the full resort experience without the crowds of Portofino. The seaside hotel has 72 modern rooms and suites, with historic flourishes and the option for a sea view. There’s a saltwater pool, an expansive garden, a private beach and the e’Spa’ce spa. Guests can dine at several on-site restaurants, from fine dining to poolside, and the chic Bar Le Colonne is perfect for an aperitif. Intrepid visitors can walk to Portofino alongside the coast in less than an hour, although there are also direct buses or taxis.

Portofino’s scenic main square is the hub of the action. It connects to the town’s vibrant harbor, and many of the best restaurants and cafes offer outdoor seating with water views. It’s perfect for an aperitif or a coffee, or to take advantage of the many shopping options. Portofino is known for its designer boutiques, from Dolce & Gabbana and Dior to Louis Vuitton and Brunello Cucinelli, and there are also several independent brands with stores that sell high-end goods, like cashmere and jewelry. Visitors and locals tend to gather in the piazza when the sun comes out (which is often), and it’s a great place to sit and watch the comings and goings. Don’t forget to stop for a scoop of gelato at one of the local gelaterias.

  • Via Paraggi a mare, 1, 16038 Paraggi GE, Italy

Because Portofino is set on a harbor, the town itself doesn’t have a good beach. But Paraggi, which is a quick walk or taxi ride away, boasts a row of private beach clubs that embrace luxury and exclusivity, where you can book loungers and umbrellas. Bagni Fiore, owned by Belmond, has previously hosted Dior pop-ups, and has been visited by Brigitte Bardot and Elizabeth Taylor over its storied life. It’s a tough invite if you’re not staying at one of Belmond’s nearby hotels, but worth it if you can swing it. There are also several beautiful public beaches in Santa Margherita Ligure.

  • Via S. Fruttuoso, 13, 16032 Camogli GE, Italy

Hop a boat from Portofino to the historic Abbey of San Fruttuoso, found in a secluded bay in the between Camogli and Portofino. It sits above a small beach, which is popular with visitors and locals alike during the summer months, and travelers can explore the Romanesque abbey’s rooms for a low ticket price. Guided tours are available for those who want the full experience, and the abbey, which is home to the tombs of members of Genoese Doria family, owns a traditional Ligurian house that can be rented for up to four people. Those who prefer getting in some steps can also hike between Portofino and San Fruttuoso Bay, which takes about two and a half hours. Otherwise, daily ferries and private boats run from Recco, Portofino, Santa Margherita Ligure, Rapallo, Sestri Levante, Lavagna, Chiavari and Genoa.

  • Località Mulino del Gassetta, 16034 Portofino, Italy

La Portofinese is an eco-farm nestled high on the coastline above Portofino in the natural park. It’s home to bees, vineyards and a butterfly garden, and it welcomes visitors for picnics, cooking classes and wine tastings. The tours and experiences are private with advance reservations, and it’s a great way to taste the local wares without restaurant crowds. The company also helms Coppelli’s Osteria, a restaurant serving dishes with ingredients from the local area, and Portofino’s Lighthouse, which serves aperitivo and snacks.

  • Via Duca degli Abruzzi, 62, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

Head into nature with Outdoor Portofino, a tour company that hosts kayaking, snorkeling, paddleboarding and hiking excursions. It’s a great way to be active and see the Portofino coast from the water, and visitors can even book sunset kayak and wine tasting tours for something extra special. If you prefer to go alone, Outdoor Portofino rents their kayaks, snorkeling equipment and paddleboard, which can be booked in advance.

Where to Eat and Drink

  • Calata Marconi, 7, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

The seafood is impressively fresh at Da I Gemelli, a beloved, family-owned restaurant found directly on Portofino’s scenic harbor. Grab an outdoor table to immerse yourself in the buzzy area and to taste Italian dishes like spaghetti ai frutti di mare and pesce alla Genovese, which showcase local catch. The family owns a second restaurant across the piazza, Da I Gemelli al Molo, as well as Da I Gemelli Milano in Milan. Reservations can be made in advance and are recommended during the high season.

  • Via Paraggi a mare, 1, 16038 Santa Margherita Ligure GE, Italy

Part of Bagni Fiore, Langosteria offers unparalleled views in an exclusive setting. Both the outdoor and indoor tables embrace the beachside locale and the menu focuses on fresh fish and seafood, from oysters to its signature scampi pasta. It’s a place to see and be seen, but the food is on point and the bar offerings include a discerning selection of Italian wines. A reservation is essential, especially during busier holiday periods, and it’s worth dining early to enjoy the Paraggi inlet with fewer people.

  • Molo Umberto I, 9, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

Found in the heart of Portofino, Cracco is led by chef Carlo Cracco , who embraces regional tradition with sophisticated flair. The restaurant opened in 2021 and has since attracted guests with its welcoming atmosphere and views of the yachts in the harbor. The wine cellar is equally impressive, boasting more than 800 labels from around the world. Visitors can also indulge in craft cocktails or bubbles on the restaurant’s scenic terrace. Reservations are available online and highly recommended.

  • Piazza Martiri dell'Olivetta, 1, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

DaV Mare, part of Belmond Splendido Mare, is helmed by chef Davide Galbiati , who combines inspiration from Lombardian and Ligurian cuisine to create contemporary, seasonal dishes. The food pairs with Ligurian wines and local seafood, particularly shellfish, is on display throughout the menu. The flavors are augmented by the trattoria di pesce’s charming terrace setting, which overlooks Portofino Piazzetta. Reserve a table in advance if you’re not staying at the hotel.

  • Piazza Martiri dell'Olivetta, 5, 16034 Portofino GE, Italy

Celebrity-favorite Ristorante Puny sits directly in the center of Portofino’s main piazzetta, offering patio seating with unparalleled views. It’s the town’s most famous eatery, but the food is actually worthwhile. The family-owned spot is known for its pasta and its seafood (the pappardelle al Portofino, featuring a tomato and pesto sauce, is the must-order dish) and its notable guests, who have included everyone from the Kardashians and Jennifer Lopez to Magic Johnson and Jeff Bezos . Reservations can only be made over the phone, so have your concierge give them a call.

Overtourism: from barcelona to lake como, locals start campaigning.

Protesters against the current tourism model on the island of Gran Canaria, on 20 April, 2024.

It's the summer of the Paris Olympic Games and Taylor Swift's Eras Tour across European cities, but for locals, this summer is already heating up to be one of protests—across Lake Como, Barcelona, the Canary Isles, Venice and Amsterdam, residents are already fighting what they perceive as overtourism.

Barcelona Locals Wipe Bus Route Off The Map To Combat Overtourism

Residents living in La Salut often have to contend with tourists ramming the 116 bus route as it heads towards Antoni Gaudí’s Park Güell—the second most visited attraction in Barcelona, after the Sagrada Familia basilica.

The Guardian reports that locals living on the 116 bus route successfully petitioned the local council to ask Google and Apple maps to take the bus route offline. One local joked that the next thing would be to ask them to remove the park altogether.

Bloomberg makes the case, however, that a better solution could have been to raise the bus fares or to run more buses to the park to alleviate overcrowding in the city.

Lake Como Wants To Introduce An Entrance Fee To Combat Overtourism, Just Like Venice

The Italian lake is the third largest in the country and receives 1.4 million tourists a year, many of whom are day trippers, who generally don't bring in as much revenue as long-term guests and locals complain of overcrowding.

Huawei’s Pura 70 Ultra Beats iPhone With Pioneering New Feature

The juan soto trade has helped both the yankees and the san diego padres, four reportedly hurt after army horses run loose through central london.

The Mayor of Como says he wants to introduce an entrance fee to combat overtourism, reports EuroNews . Mayor Alessandro Rapinese is thinking of introducing a Venise-style daily charge (due to go live in Venice for the first time this week).

The Lake Como area has had a huge influx of non-residents buying homes in the area and then renting them out to tourists—since 2016, the number of holiday homes and private rentals has increased by 673%.

Incidentally, Venice residents recently protested against the entrance fee, because they believe the city needs a new vision that focuses on housing its residents rather than controlling its tourists—the city has more tourist beds than resident beds.

'My Misery; Your Paradise'—Locals In the Canary Islands Fight Overtourism

Locals in the Spanish Canary islands are planning mass protests over what they believe to be the unchecked flow of tourists to the islands—in 2023, the archipelago received 14.1 million tourists, the most it has ever had in one year.

One group in Tenerife is planning a hunger strike because of two new hotels and graffiti can be seen saying 'tourists, go home'—lots of residents hit the streets to protest. Like Lake Como, Venice and Barcelona, an increase in rental costs has priced residents out of the local housing market.

Amsterdam Says No To New Hotels, To Combat Overtourism

Dutch authorities announced that no more hotels will be permitted to open in Amsterdam as the city clamps down on overtourism, reports The Washington Post . New hotels will only be given the go-ahead on a one-out, one-in basis and even then, new hotels can only take an old one's place if it is considered to be an improvement—more sustainable, say, than the last. The official statement said that they wanted "to make and keep the city livable for residents and visitors.”

The latest policy on new hotels is just one of a long list of measures to bring in more sustainable tourists and tourism behavior. For the past few years, the Dutch government has been trying to discourage people from just visiting a few sites and to promote more sites across the country—encouraged by the zeal with which local tourists were trampling tulip fields to take Instagrammable-worthy pictures.

In 2023, the goverment launched a campaign targeted specifically at British men aged 18-35 who traditionally wreak havoc across Amsterdam on party weekends—when would-be British tourists type certain terms into their search engines, such as 'stag party in Amsterdam', 'cheap hotel Amsterdam' or 'pub crawl Amsterdam' they see pop ups that inform them of huge fines if they misbehave and the risk of returning to the U.K. with a criminal record.

Fear That Netflix's Ripley Could Increase Overcrowding On Italy's Amalfi Coast

Critics have generally loved Andrew Scott's version of Patricia Highsmith's Ripley on Netflix but some locals are fearful that it will bring even more crowds to a coast that isn't short of a tourist or two.

The village of Atrani, which features in the show, sits next to its crowded neighbor Amalfi (it's a thirty-minute stroll along the coast) and Airbnb ( quoted in The Guardian ) says it saw a 93% increase in bookings to the Atrani area since the show aired. For this village of 800 residents, where the roads in and out are often rammed in the summer months, it increases the fear that more visitors might become unmanageable.

As Bloomberg reports , Europe is the continent warming the fastest and so, the issue of overtourism poses additional challenges—2023 was Europe's largest wildfire on record and produced its costliest flood.

In one of the first signs of water conflict between residents and tourists of 2024, the north east of Spain is planning on restricting water to tourists if the current drought continues. Catalonia would limit tourists staying in hotels to 100 litres (26 gallons) per day, although this does not include the water used to top up swimming pools.
