Ratings and reviews

Location and contact.

This was one of the best meals of a 15 day trip.Like many restaurants, we had selected Le Turon based on the reviews, but our hotel manager had also mentioned that it was one of the best in the area. We were seated in an... arched stone ceiling dining area in the lower floor, which appeared to have been a wine cellar, and the atmosphere was very intimate. Service was good, and we each had the menu gourmand, with entree, plat, frommage and dessert. All were outstanding, with the filet de boeuf grille entree and moelleux au chocolat dessert our favorite. Price was good for the quality of food. Highly recommend this restaurant. More

We happened to be in Tours on a Sunday and Monday nights and none of the Michelin Star Restaurants were open. We reserved a table and we were so pleased we did. Booking was essential. The food was amazing - as good as many a... michelin one star. The portions were enormous - so I suggest you build up an appetite to be able to have the 4 course menu - which was excellent value too. An amazing find. More

this restaurant was recomended by our hotel and it was a lovely surprise. Really great food, good service and very good value for the quality of food that was presented.. The beef and monkfish were both divine and my normally fussy son cleared all his... plates. More

Three years ago we ended up for lunch in Le Turon and enjoyed our meal, the wine and the atmosphere. From the little amuse on the house till the espresso to wake us from our dream. Even the bill was pleasant. This year we were... back in Tours and made shure not to miss Le Turon. We were excited, swapped plates to let each other taste our choices. Our plates were clean when we were finished. Not because it was not enough but because it was too good to leave a crumb on the plate. More

Visited Le Turon on recommendation of son who is studying in Tours and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Three of us enjoyed three excellent three course meals washed down with very acceptable wines. The quality and flavour of the beef that two of us had... was outstanding and the 7 hour lamb was meltingly tender. At about £100 for three people with no holding back on food and drink it was excellent value for this quality of meal and service More

We visited Le Turon on our last night in Tours and it made a perfect bookend to our earlier visit to the very different, but equally excellent, Au Lapin Qui Fume. While the latter provides excellent, hearty bistro fare, Le Turon tends more towards the... Nouvelle Cuisine style, with small portions of delicately cooked food, supplemented with alchemical wisps of other flavorful ingredients. The set menu is reasonable, and varied enough to cater to every pallet. The waitstaff were eager and helpful with recommendations and we passed a delightful couple of hours there. This popular restaurant fills up quickly so arrive early or book ahead, but don't miss the chance to visit. More

There are many similar offerings in Tours and reading the reviews on TA you might wonder why they don't have Michelin stars. Answer is because the food is actually not all that special. To be honest I would expect to find food of similar or... better quality in most towns in England. Anyway this place is pleasant enough. I had monkfish tartare to start which was overpowered by the marinade (very similar to ceviche that is common in Peru) and my wife the eggs with foie gras. This came in a sauce that was supposedly a Chinon wine reduction but actually tasted like oxtail soup!). Main courses were 7 hour lamb (come on guys stewing lamb for ages is not rocket science!) which was ok and sea bream with some rice which was a very nicely cooked piece of fish. At approx 75 Euros inc aperitif and wine pretty good value. Not bad at all just that the food did not meet the standards suggested by rave reviews More

I ate dinner here with my wife and daughter in early August, based on a recommendation from Mme. Laurence at the Manoir du Tours hotel. They have a fixed price menu. The restaurant is on the street that most restaurants in town are on (Rue... du Colbert). The menu has English subtitles. The food, service, and atmosphere is excellent. Traditional French cuisine without pretense. Many locals at there also, not just tourists. Even if you do not eat here, you should take a stroll down the street. I think it looks like a quintessential small town French street. More

Everything on the line, fast-food system - all hot dishes came with potatoes, not very clean and the tabletops smelled strongly of chlorine

Been wanting to go Le Turon on Rue Colbert since we arrived in Tour. Alas it was open for dinner (apparently closed on Mondays and Lunch time on Tuesday and Wednesday). The staff were all very friendly. We decided on 1 plat (entree or main)... + 2nd plat (main or dessert), for 12 Euros. I had the Warm Farm Goats Cheese & Rillons (like a cured pork belly) Salad. It was delicious. The Goat cheese was in what in a filo pastry parcel, and baked till warm. A must try. Then followed by a Fillet of Pork with apple sauce and potatoes. My daughter had the Chicken Fricasee which was also good, followed by an Apple crumble with Caramel ice Cream - very nice. The whole bill with a glass of Champagne Cocktail and Mineral Water was 42 Euros. One of the best meals we've had in Tour so far. More

We visited because we wanted local food prepared well and this exceeded our expectations. We had a scallop serviche to start, which was delicious, such a well balanced dish. Then I followed up with veal and my companions with beef steak. Everything was amazing, and... the staff were excellent and able to recommend wine to match the food (which it did, beautifully) More

Food is truly amazing! I wish wish I could give them 5 stars...but wait is waaaay too long! But if you have few hours to spare, you will love everything they have to offer!

The food is really good. The service and the presentation are excellent and the taste just kills it. The place is rather simple though and the prices are OK for the quality you get.

We had a superbe dinner at Le Turon with a friend. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. We had pork with cheese cream sauce and foie gras as starters. Then beef and fish as main courses. Every dish was served with great... combination of flavours. Before the orders arrived we were served with an amouse-bouce of pea and cheese soup which was outstanding. For dessert molten chocolate cake and Paris brest pastry which were also fantastic. I highly recommend it! More

Really enjoyed our dinner here. Great regional food. Eggs poached in red wine topped with Pate de Foie Gras. Don't hesitate, just try it. Fish and pork were both great too. We went twice so also tried Canneloni filled with crab, mango and nuts. Very... pleasant young man seemed to be running the place and doing a great job of making you welcome. More

The Lovely, Laid-Back City of Tours

The Lovely, Laid-Back City of Tours

Beneath the plane trees lining Boulevard Béranger, the twice-weekly flower market in Tours provides a splash of color and a heady whiff of fragrance to the thoroughfare, one of several that can justly be described as Haussmannesque. The imposing Belle Epoque City Hall, built by noted native-son architect Victor Laloux bears more than a passing resemblance to the Hôtel de Ville in the nation’s capital. Echoes of the Paris Opéra are found in the opulent Grand Théâtre de Tours, since architect Charles Garnier was involved in its construction. Towering Saint Gatien cathedral, in spite of its ornate facade and owl-eyed twin towers topped with Renaissance belfries, is, on the interior, a Gothic marvel fit for Quasimodo. And in the summer—inspired by the success of Paris Plage—Tours puts on its own beach-party festival on the banks of the Loire, with evening concerts, open-air movies and guinguettes for dancing.

“ Tours? C’est le mini-Paris! ” That’s how the local Tourangeaux describe their lovely city on the Loire, which has, on several occasions, stood in for Paris as the capital of France. The bold comparison—spoken in  what is claimed to be the purest French in the entire country—must surely provoke some nose-wrinkling among proud Parisians. But even the most partisan Parigot must recognize that provincial Tours does have much in common with the City of Light, albeit on a much smaller—and, some might say, more human and friendlier—scale.

But if Tours harbors a thinly concealed rivalry with its larger sibling on the Seine, it’s remarkably laid-back about it—that’s what makes the city so appealing. Paris may be the nation’s pacesetter, but Tours somehow manages to never fall too far behind and still take time to smell the roses. The easygoing approach to life in the Touraine has given birth to the expression le quart d’heure Tourangeau , which essentially means you shouldn’t expect anything to start until 15 minutes after the scheduled time. Even the Loire seems in no great rush to get to the sea, normally preferring to proclaim its existence in a pleasant purr rather than a threatening roar.

It’s easy to see why Tours is used as a base by many of the estimated nine million tourists who come every year to visit the Renaissance châteaux of the Loire. Centrally located within an hour or so of all the most important châteaux, its modern transport links—it’s only an hour by TGV from central Paris—and its wide array of restaurants, hotels and other amenities make it a logical hub. But Tours offers visitors much more than just a place to wine, dine and rest after a long day exploring Chenonceau or the extraordinary gardens of Villandry. The city has many attractions of its own to help castled-out tourists recharge their batteries.

Cobbled streets and cafés

The Loire gives Tours its scenic setting, but it’s also the most useful reference when navigating the city, which is actually sandwiched between two rivers: the Loire and the Cher. Urban sprawl has extended, in a not always prepossessing fashion, far beyond both rivers, so it’s the area closest to the Loire that merits the most attention. It’s not a bad idea to start a tour of Tours with a lazy stroll along the banks of the great river—on the western end of the city there’s a mini-promenade under weeping willows dangling their wistful tendrils into the languorous current. Rue Nationale, running perpendicular to the river across the center of town, is lined with shops all the way to the Mairie and the elegant fountains and flowerbeds of the Place Jean Jaurès, dividing the city into two distinct sections, with Vieux Tours to the west and the cathedral quarter to the east.

Vieux Tours is technically a misnomer—the Gallo-Roman area in the cathedral quarter predates medieval Tours by quite a few centuries. But the beguiling maze of cobbled streets is lined with 14th- to 16th-century half-timbered and slate-clad townhouses adorned with exquisitely carved figures. All the cobbled arteries lead to the pedestrian Place Plumereau, a carefully preserved jewel of late medieval architecture.

There’s something irresistibly appealing about sitting in Place Plum’ (pronounced like the feather, not the fruit) and absorbing the atmosphere. In the shade of parasols and café awnings, local residents, students and tourists converse while sipping coffee and nursing glasses of sparkling Vouvray wine. Children lick artisanale ice cream under the old mulberry tree, and avid eaters lunch on copious salads, topped with goat’s cheese from Sainte-Maure de Touraine, and toast slathered with rillettes de porc (a regional specialty of spreadable pork pâté).

The jumbled streets around Place Plumereau offer a good choice of chic restaurants and bars, while an equally diverse but more international flavor is found along rue Colbert, which starts on the other side of rue Nationale and leads to the cathedral quarter. Rue Colbert is the preferred hangout of many of the city’s 30,000-odd students, so there are plenty of budget-friendly restaurants on hand. At number 39/41, a plaque marks the half-timbered house of the armurier who made Joan of Arc’s armor in 1429, before she set off to lift the siege of Orléans.

Few more pleasing…

Farther down rue Colbert, Saint Gatien cathedral leaps out of the city skyline. The evolution of medieval architecture is writ large on the ornate facade, reflecting the 13th- to 16th-century progression from Romanesque to flamboyant Gothic to early Renaissance, but the great church miraculously manages to avoid looking like a stylistic mishmash. The interior houses the elaborate white marble tomb of two princes—the children of Anne de Bretagne and Charles VIII—who died in their infancy, marking the end of the royal Valois dynasty in France.

There’s also some magnificent stained glass, including smaller-scale ripostes to the rose windows of Notre Dame de Paris. On clear days, the sunlight streaming through the windows over the choir throws magical polychrome patterns on the floor of the ambulatory. Just outside, the cathedral’s two-story cloister, known as La Psalette because that’s where psalms were sung, has a graceful, circular Renaissance staircase in one corner. Henry James, during his visit to Tours in 1882, summed up Saint Gatien best: “There are many grander cathedrals, but there are probably few more pleasing.”

A short walk from Saint Gatien, the Musée des Beaux-Arts occupies the former 17th/18th-century episcopal palace. The courtyard entrance harbors a living chef d’oeuvre : an enormous cedar of Lebanon, planted in 1804 and now one of the largest in Europe. The museum houses a surprisingly rich collection of paintings, sculptures and furniture, including works by Rubens, Rembrandt, Mantegna, Monet, Degas and Delacroix, among many others. There are also two portraits and a Rodin statue of novelist Honoré de Balzac, who was born in Tours and spent a good portion of his adult life writing, and hiding from Parisian creditors, in the region. Outside the museum a small, attractive formal garden offers a fine view of the former palace and the cathedral.

Visitors may find themselves wondering why the cathedral quarter is nearly a mile from Old Tours: the answer is that Tours is actually two distinct settlements grown together. When the Celtic Turone tribe first established their settlement here, it was on the northern side of the Loire. The Romans arrived in the 1st century, and with characteristic imperiousness transferred the settlement south to its current site and re-named it Caesarodunum, Caesar’s Hill. As industrious as they were imperious, the Romans built a large protective wall around the settlement, significant traces of which can still be seen in the garden of the Musée des Beaux-Arts and rue des Ursulines. They also built an amphitheater large enough to seat 34,000 spectators, making it one of the five largest in the Roman Empire. Only the arena’s foundations remain, in the cellars of private mansions, but the curving outline of the amphitheater can still be traced on rue du Général Meunier. The cathedral quarter that grew up around Saint Gatien was built on the site of the Roman settlement.

Saints and Charlemagne

The Romans left their indelible mark on Tours, as in many parts of France, but it was one ex-Roman soldier in particular who would dramatically shape the city’s history. Famed for cutting his military cloak in half to share with a beggar, Saint Martin of Tours died in 397, and he quickly thereafter became one of the most important Catholic saints. The cult of Saint Martin grew in importance as he was adopted as a patron saint, first by the Merovingian and then the Carolingian kings of the Franks. The original basilica of Saint Martin, built a good 20-minute walk from the Roman town, housed the saint’s shrine; in the early Middle Ages it was considered the third most important pilgrimage site in Christendom, after Jerusalem and Rome. Much of Martin’s early posthumous popularity, in fact, was due to the writings of the city’s second major saint, Grégoire de Tours, a 6th-century bishop and prominent historian who wrote a history of the Franks and many accounts of miracles attributed to Martin.

The great wealth of the basilica of Saint Martin was a tempting target to marauders, and in fact was the intended destination of the Saracen army defeated by Charles Martel—Charlemagne’s grandfather—in 732 in the Battle of Tours (also called the Battle of Poitiers). Walls were built to protect the new settlement that sprang up around the basilica to host the pilgrims, so that until the 14th century Tours was actually two separate entities. It was only in the late Middle Ages, as the region prospered from the silk trade and the royal favor of Louis XI, that the area between the two settlements developed, effectively fusing them.

The basilica was destroyed and rebuilt several times, eventually succumbing to Viking and Norman raids, fire, religious wars and revolution. But vestiges of the medieval structure remain on rue de Châteauneuf, notably Charlemagne’s Tower—the Frankish king’s last wife, Luitgarde, is said to be buried there. In the late 19th and early 20th century, architect Victor Laloux built a new, neo-Byzantine basilica on the site of the old one. (Laloux also built the train station in Tours and another, in Paris, that eventually became the Musée d’Orsay.)

Built at the same time as Sacré Coeur in Paris, the basilica is a more restrained affair than its grandiose cousin; Saint Martin’s tomb, in the crypt, still draws pilgrims more than 1500 years after the saint’s death.

Like Paris, Tours is sometimes described as bourgeois. That may be considered good or bad, but it is undoubtedly true, in more ways than one. When most people call Tours “bourgeois”, they’re referring to its air of unpretentious prosperity, visibly reflected in its  wealth of gourmet restaurants, fine shops and impressive architecture. But in fact the first known French use of the word bourg dates from 837, when it was used to describe the walled settlement around the basilica. The Tourangeaux have every reason to be proud of it.

We used Eco Place Tours for our safari trip to Lake Mburo and queen Elizabeth national Park. Our guide and driver Richard was excellent. He was knowledgeable, organized and good with time. He listens, allows time for questions and shares the plan ahead of time. He’s an experienced and steady driver, observes roads regulations while maintaining good and steady speed , and met road safety requirements. He was courteous to other road users. I would recommend that you use Eco Place Tours for your safari trip. I hope he will be available for our next safari trip to Masai Mara National Park.

So we travelled with Ecoplace Tours Limited on Wednesday 23rd August, 2023 to Murchison Falls. We had such an amazing Tour guide, Richard, who made the whole journey comfortable, educative and exciting. When we got there, my family and I had a full blown experience at the game park and lodge. I promise I would literally stay in the park for a year If given a chance😂Thanks a lot Ecoplace Tours Limited for the “Forever memories,,” we made.

My family had a safari trip with ecoplace in last month...everything was amazing!! The kids had a great time, the lodges were lovely with friendly staff. Richard was our tour guide, talked us through everything, making it easy to make decisions as first time tourists in the country. His time keeping was spot on and also helped us take lovely pictures on our phones, making the whole experience a memorable one. Thank you Richard and Ecoplace tours, we'll definitely use your services again in future.

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.

'One of our own breaking barriers': Pop star Diljit Dosanjh sells out B.C. Place

Pop star Diljit Dosanjh kicked off the Canadian leg of his Dil-luminati tour of performances in Vancouver Saturday night — the largest Punjabi music concert held outside of India.

Two hours before the concert, hundreds of people formed lines outside the entrances of B.C. Place. Many were generations of family members who huddled together under umbrellas, keeping dry from the rain.

Fans from all over North America, including California’s Sukhi Kaur, 34, travelled to Vancouver to see the musician perform. Kaur came with her sister Kiren Chand, who drove in from Seattle.

“Being here, for us, it’s about North Indian representation — there’s not a lot of it in Canada and America. It’s massive that one of our people has made it to this scale.”

Chand said that not only does Dosanjh represent Punjabis and their descendants, who are spread across the globe, but the musician also signifies the diaspora’s religious beliefs.

“His wearing of a turban signifies this, our Sikh beliefs,” Chand said. “He is the first of us to build such a global platform.”

The sold-out show at the stadium, which has a capacity of around 54,000 seats, is also the first time a Punjabi musician has headlined at one of Canada’s largest venues, according to the tour website.

In preparation for the three-hour performance, a hotel next to the venue informed its guests about the duration of the show and offered them earplugs.

“We have provided earplugs in case the music does travel into the room,” reads a notice from the JW Marriott Parq Hotel’s director of room operations. The memo was photographed and posted to Twitter by Surrey’s Rajan Mangat, who is attending the concert.

The 30-year-old and his siblings are taking their parents, both of whom are originally from Punjab, to Dosanjh’s concert.

“We bought them tickets for their birthday,” said Mangat. “It will be their first concert ever like this — inside an arena like this.”

For the second-generation Canadian, Mangat said Dosanjh’s rise to fame in the country shows the growing presence of people in Canada with Punjabi roots.

“The community is excited because we have heard of so many others doing this stuff around the world, but this is one of our own breaking barriers in our city,” he said Saturday.

“He’s showing younger and older generations that we are here.”

The musician, who has previously starred in several Bollywood films, including Udta Punjab and Dunki, has also proven to be a pioneer in North America’s music scene.

In 2023, he was the first artist of Sikh-Punjab origin to headline a stage at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. The previous year, the musician’s Born to Shine tour launched in Vancouver to a sold-out crowd at Rogers Arena.

“I went to that show — one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to,” Mangat recalled.

“It was a big cultural celebration with people from age six to 65 dancing — I couldn’t believe it. I’m so excited to experience that again.”

Saturday afternoon, resale tickets for fans who wanted to be seated close to the artist in the first row were sold from $482.79 to as high as $713.89 on Ticketmaster. Other seats were listed at a markup price of more than several thousand dollars.

“Witness history in the making,” read a Thursday post on social media from Dosanjh. It included footage of him touching the ground of B.C. Place before raising his hands in prayer.

One of the hits Dosanjh is expected to perform on Saturday is Lover from his smash album MoonChild Era, which was produced locally by Surrey’s Aneil Singh Kainth, who records under the name Intense.

Kainth previously said that the skyrocketing success of Punjabi music in Canada is partly due to an influx of university students from India coming to live here.

“Growing up, I was listening to AC/DC and Def Leppard as well as music from India,” the producer said. “I thought it would be dope to combine and fuse genres. Now, we are toe-to-toe with Western music in terms of global streaming numbers.”

Nelly Korda continues to solidify standing atop latest Olympic Golf Ranking Update

Bunched leaderboard means a hollywood ending in store at wilshire.

  • Nelly Korda

Nelly Korda

Reigning Olympic gold medalist Nelly Korda has continued to solidify her place at the top of both the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings and Olympic Golf Rankings, as she has collected five straight victories in her last five starts on the LPGA Tour.

Korda began her run with a playoff win over Lydia Ko in her hometown of Bradenton, Florida, at the LPGA Drive On Championship at Bradenton Country Club, and after a seven-week break from competition, picked up another title at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship, this time winning in a one-hole playoff over Ryann O’Toole at Palos Verdes Golf Club in California.

She won again the next week at the Ford Championship presented by KCC after carding a final-round 65 in dreary conditions at Seville Golf and Country Club in Gilbert, Arizona, and then defeated Leona Maguire 4 and 3 in the championship match at the T-Mobile Match Play presented by MGM Rewards, her 12th career LPGA Tour title.

Korda went on to capture her second major title last week at The Chevron Championship, winning by two shots over Maja Stark at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas. With the win, the 25-year-old became just the third player since 1978 to win five straight tournaments on the LPGA Tour, joining Nancy Lopez and Annika Sorenstam, and was the first player since herself in 2021 to win a major championship and the event before.

Korda is one of four Americans currently ranked inside the top 15 of the Olympic Golf Ranking. Lilia Vu, who won four times during the 2023 season, including two major championships, has been dealing with a back injury this year but has still managed to remain second in the standings.

Last year’s CPKC Women’s Open champion, Megan Khang, is sitting at 13th in the Olympic Golf Ranking with her good friend and UCLA alum Alison Lee right behind her in the 14th position. Khang has earned three top-15 results so far this year, the best of which is a solo third that came at the LPGA Drive On Championship, while Lee has recorded two top-10 finishes, tying for third at the FIR HILLS SERI PAK Championship and tying for eighth at the Ford Championship presented by KCC.

But the United States isn’t the only country with more than two representatives inside the top 15 of the Rolex Rankings.

The Republic of Korea has had plenty of success in previous Olympic Games, as Inbee Park took home the gold medal in 2016 in Rio. As of April 23, Jin Young Ko and Hyo Joo Kim are sitting at seventh and 10th, respectively, in the Olympic Golf Ranking, while Amy Yang is ranked 15th.

Ko has played in just three events this year after a two-win season in 2023, finishing T20, T8 and then missing the cut in the three tournaments in which she has competed in 2024. Kim has recorded two top-10 finishes in six starts this season, tying for fifth at the Honda LPGA Thailand and tying for eighth at the Ford Championship presented by KCC in March. She picked up her sixth career LPGA Tour victory last fall at The Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America.

Yang won the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship in November 2023 at Tiburón Golf Club after recording a four-day total of 27-under. It’s been a slow start to the 2024 LPGA Tour season for the 34-year-old, whose best finish this year is a tie for 22nd that came at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tournament of Champions.

While there hasn’t been any substantially significant movement in the Olympic Golf Ranking in recent weeks, Stark did move ahead of fellow Swede Linn Grant in the standings after her runner-up finish at The Chevron Championship. The 24-year-old was ranked 26th in the Olympic Golf Ranking as of April 15, while Grant was in 21st. But after her solid showing at The Club at the Carlton Woods, Stark is now ranked 22nd, one spot ahead of Grant, who is currently ranked 23rd.

Golf | north oaks’ frankie capan iii in second place, two shots back heading into final round of korn ferry tour event.

A golfer swings

North Oaks product Frankie Capan III is in position to secure his first Korn Ferry Tour victory Sunday in Texas.

Capan birdied his final three holes in the third round Saturday at Texas Rangers Golf Club in Arlington to move into solo second place and pull within two shots of Tim Widing at the Veritex Bank Championship.

Capan shot a 4-under-par 67 on Saturday, two days after he set the course record with a 13-under 58 to open the tournament.

A victory Sunday would move the 24-year-old into the top five of the season-long points list. The top 30 at season’s end earn PGA Tour cards. If Capan — who entered the week in 30th on the list — were to maintain his current placement of solo second, he’d be projected to move up to 12th.

There are currently no Minnesota natives on golf’s top professional tour.

Capan is simply excited to have the opportunity to contend for a title.

“Winning is fun, man. Winning is always fun,” Capan told reporters Saturday. “No matter what tour or what level you’re on. No matter what we’re playing. If you and I went out and played pickleball or football or any other sport, I want to beat you. So I think just having the opportunity to win and putting myself in a good spot to do that is exciting, and I’m really looking forward to (Sunday).”

More in Golf

A tournament win would catapult Capan into the fourth on the Korn Ferry Tour leaderboard. The Top 30 at season's end get their PGA cards.

(EXCLUSIVE, Premium Rates Apply) Prince performs after being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Photo by Kevin Kane/WireImage)

Prince had been at a crossroads before, but never like he was at the beginning of 2004.

Popular on Variety

On February 8, he opened the 2004 Grammy Awards with a five-minute medley of “Purple Rain,” “Baby I’m a Star” and “Let’s Go Crazy” — with Beyonce — that may be the greatest opening to a music-awards show in television history. Two weeks later, he announced his first major tour in six years, noting that he’d be playing his hits again. “It’s older music, but it’s going to be played in a newer way,” he said, teasing that it might be the last time he played those songs in concert (it wasn’t). Then in March, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where he played a different, much longer medley of his hits during the ceremony — but of course what everyone remembers is his show-stealing solo during the all-star George Harrison tribute, which he finished by throwing his guitar into the audience.

Musically, “Musicology” was a return to accessibility. And although it didn’t reach the peaks of his classic ‘80s material — to be fair, not much music does — it was a vivid sampler of his musical styles that marked the return of the Prince that people knew and loved. It also was a genuine hit: The ticket-CD bundle helped loft the album to No. 3 on the Billboard 200, but it was top 5 in multiple countries all over the world without that boost, even though it didn’t have a big hit single. Recorded over several years, “Musicology”’s musical baseline is the brand of lean funk Prince was raised on — he even shouts out Earth, Wind & Fire, James Brown and others in the album’s lead-off title track, which concludes with brief, scratchy recordings of some of his own hits in a mock scanning-the-radio-dial segment. There are a couple of “Do Me, Baby”-styled bedroom ballads, bombastic rock (“A Million Days”), even the new wave pop he hadn’t done since “I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man” on “Cinnamon Girl,” complete with splashes of vintage synthesizers. It winds down with a sultry, slow-burning burst of Aretha on the soulfully bluesy “On the Couch” and concludes with the breezy “Reflection.”

Even though Prince’s musicianship was at a new peak — his blazing guitar work, multi-tracked harmonies, production and arranging show an artist at the top of his craft — he was making music that was easy to like again, which isn’t to say it was simple; but even at its most sophisticated and complex (like the jazzy interlude at the end of “If I Was the Man in Ur Life”), it went down more smoothly. Indeed, the only area where “Musicology” fell flat is in the lyrics, which, like much of Prince’s later material, could be shockingly insipid. In particular, the album’s catchiest track, “Life of the Party,” is marred by lyrics so tossed-off that it sounds like they were written off the top of his head. (“So you’re havin’ a party?/ Goody for you/ All the beautiful people gonna be there/ Yeah, that’s cool.”) Even when he tried gravitas — about politics, war, global warming and moral decay on “Dear Mr. Man” — it wasn’t much better.

Prince was not an artist who’d ever lacked confidence, but by the end of 2004, the full swagger was back in his step. He’d significantly increased his wealth: The tour grossed nearly $90 million, the album was certified double platinum in the U.S. early in 2005, and it spurred sales of his entire catalog in an era when most people still bought CDs. But more importantly, it also marked the return of the Prince people knew, one who wasn’t completely refusing to be who he’d been, and not just musically: The weird outfits and otherworldly hairstyles had been replaced by sleek, classy suits and a short, trim cut.

The year’s creative efforts also gave him a model for how to pursue the rest of his career. Any time he wanted another million (or ten), he’d hit the road in some new and unusual way. Over the following years he played everything from a months-long Las Vegas residency to a premium-price one at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood; from a series of 21 dates at London’s Wembley Arena to a handful of shows in specific regions of the U.S. — even the Carolinas. He played brief “Hit and Run” tours that were announced just days before they launched; and of course he staged what is universally considered to be the greatest Super Bowl Halftime performance of all time in 2007. By contrast, his last tour, shortly before his death in 2016, was just him accompanying himself on piano. He kept finding new ways to keep himself interested.

And although he wouldn’t again reach the upper echelons of the charts in his lifetime and his albums continued to be frustratingly hit-or-miss, his sense of innovation returned with “3121,” the album that followed “Musicology” — on it, fans of “Sign O’ the Times,” which many regard as the peak of his creativity, could find much to grab onto, at least for the first half of the album. Unfortunately, most of the other albums he released in these years were maddeningly inconsistent (and sometimes appallingly bad) but although you won’t find any hidden “Purple Rain”s, there are overlooked gems to be found on many of them — like “Lavaux” and “Laydown” from “20Ten” (the latter of which features the priceless line, “from the heart of Minnesota/ Here come the purple Yoda”), and “Better With Time” and especially “ Ol’ Skool Company ” from “MPLSoUND.” Every once in a while on those albums and others, the Prince you love pops up with something so great it’s as if he’d never gone anywhere. And that’s really the gift of his scattershot, impossibly vast musical output — even though he’s no longer here, there’ll always be something new to find.

“Musicology” was the end of Prince’s wilderness years, and in every way, it set him up for the remaining dozen years of his much-too-brief life.
