The Best Portable Steamers for Wedding Attire

travel steamer wedding dress

Brides / Kristin Kempa

Whether you’re traveling for a bachelorette, destination wedding, or your honeymoon, a portable steamer is essential to have on hand. Portable steamers ensure wrinkle-free, flawless ‘fits no matter how much they got stuffed and squashed in transit .

“Portable steamers are excellent for travel because they are lightweight, compact, and easy to use,” says fashion expert Joe Manktelow-Pimm . “They allow you to quickly and effectively remove wrinkles from your clothes, keeping them looking fresh and presentable while on the go.”

To ensure you get a high quality portable steamer, we’ve narrowed down the list to top performers in a variety of categories to suit your individual needs. We looked for steamers that are easy to pack and work quickly to safely steamer your precious outfits. From budget to international outlet-friendly, we’ve got you and your delicate fabrics covered (in steam)!

Best Splurge

This sleek and stylish tool is a hybrid between a steamer and an iron, which can make for either a natural look or super crisp finish. It includes a wearable ironing tool so you can steam on your body, and features a curved shape with a textured surface. It can either stand up or lie down flat when hot or not in use, and it has an auto shut off for added safety.

Capacity : 3 oz | Wattage : 1000W | Heat Up Time : About 1 minute

Best Compact

Nesugar steamer for clothes.

With an ultra-speedy heat up time of 15 seconds, this compact steamer is as stylish as it is convenient. We love the lightweight, unique design that fits easily into any carry-on bag; it weighs less than one pound and measures only 8.9 X 3.1 X 1.65 inches. Built for travel, it features 10 minutes of continuous steaming, a 6 foot power cord, and comes with a wall mount bracket and a travel storage bag. With a rotating head, it can steam from various angles. Plus, it just looks beautiful!

It has a whopping 18 minutes of continuous steaming to work through those tougher wrinkles and a quick 30 seconds of heat up time. It also has a 10 ounce capacity, so you can work through many different clothes without having to refill. It includes a fabric brush, lint brush, and a heavy duty ceramic sole plate.

Capacity : 10 oz | Wattage : 1500 watts | Heat Up Time : 30 seconds

Best for International Weddings

Conair travel garment dual voltage steamer.

This dual voltage steamer works worldwide, making it the perfect option for destination weddings. With just a simple switch, the power adapts automatically for 1200 watts of wrinkle-eliminating power (but note you’ll still need an adaptor for the plug). It has a quick, 35 second heat up time, removable water tank, and an adjustable steam head for easy handling.

Capacity : 3.2 oz | Wattage : 1200 watts | Heat Up Time : 35 seconds

With 1400 watts of power and 15 foot cord, this steamer features a locking trigger that lets you apply steam continuously or in small bursts. It also has three attachments included for removing lint, steaming upholstery, or steaming delicate fabrics, so you don’t end up damaging silks or other delicates along the way. We love that the steamer will automatically power down after 15 minutes of inactivity, providing added safety.

Capacity : 7.4 oz | Wattage : 1400 watts | Heat Up Time : Less than 1 minute

Best Foldable

Kexi travel garment steamer.

If you’re looking for a compact, foldable design that can snap into half its size, this is it. Don't let the cute design fool you—this stylish and powerful steamer has a steam flow of 25g/minute that efficiently removes wrinkles. The tank heats in 40 seconds and can handle 12 continuous minutes of steam. Plus, the extended 70 ft ultra long cord is super convenient when setting up in a hotel room.

Capacity : 4.7 oz | Wattage : 1200 watts | Heat Up Time : 40 seconds

Best Quick Heating

Polardo hand held portable travel garment steamer.

With a compact design, stainless steel head, light design, and an ultra speedy 25 seconds heat up time, this steamer is great for a last minute steaming session. It's also leak-proof and offers 10 minutes of continuous steaming. The 4 oz capacity means you don't constantly have to refill it either. Bonus points for a travel pouch and lint removal brush.

Capacity : 4 oz | Wattage : 900 watts | Heat Up Time : 25 seconds

Best Iron/Steamer

Nori the nori press.

This viral steamer looks like a hair flat iron, but it’s really a handy 2-in-1 iron and steamer that’s perfect for travel! Sometimes an iron is better at removing wrinkles, and this tool gives you the best of both worlds. The two heated plates clamp down and will iron the front and back of your garment simultaneously for quick and efficient unwrinkling. Offering six fabric-specific settings, it can treat everything from cotton to wool and there's a steam option as well. We love the chic colors too.

Capacity : 1 oz | Wattage : 120/220V-60Hz, Power: 450/750W | Heat Up Time : Less than 1 minute

Best Ergonomic

Newbealer handheld steamer for clothes.

The Newbealer steamer takes only 20 seconds to heat up with two steam levels (16-24g/min) for a more specific steaming experience. It features unique leak proof, anti-drip and anti-spill technology, so that you can steam from any angle that’s comfortable for your grip. The ergonomic handle is also great for sensitive wrists. You get about 10 minutes of continuous steam.

Capacity : 6 oz | Wattage : 1200W | Heat Up Time : 20 seconds

What to Look for in a Portable Steamer

“Look for a steamer with multiple modes, such as gentle or turbo, to cater to different fabrics and wrinkle severity,” says Manktelow-Pimm. You can also look into multiple attachments, for harder to work with materials like wool or more delicate fabrics like silk. We like BLACK+DECKER Advanced Handheld Garment / Fabric Steamer since it comes with three different attachments.

Tank Capacity

“Opt for a steamer that is compact enough to fit in your travel bag, while still having a sufficient water tank capacity to provide continuous steam for longer periods,” Manktelow-Pimm says. A good middle ground is around 2-3 oz tanks. For the largest capacity, we love how Electrolux Portable Handheld Garment and Fabric Steamer has a 10 ounce capacity in a portable steamer.

Heat Up Time

Manktelow-Pimm suggests opting for a steamer that heats up quickly, ideally within a minute or two, to save time during your travel routine. Some steamers can even heat up in 25 seconds, like Polardo Steamer for Clothes , which are great for busy schedules!

“To steam delicate fabrics, it is important to use the steamer correctly to avoid any damage,” says Manktelow-Pimm. “Firstly, ensure that the steamer's heat setting is appropriate for the fabric. Secondly, hold the steamer a few inches away from the fabric and let the steam gently penetrate without applying too much pressure. Finally, allow the steamed fabric to hang and air dry for a few minutes to set the steamed effect.”

“Portable steamers are generally permitted on planes, but it is wise to check with your airline beforehand to ensure compliance with their specific guidelines,” Manktelow-Pimm says. “Some airlines may have restrictions on carrying certain types or sizes of portable steamers.” Generally, if it can fit in your carry-on baggage, it should be fine.

Steam is preferred. “Wedding dresses, especially those made with delicate fabrics or intricate details, can be easily damaged by ironing,” explains Manktelow-Pimm. “Steaming, on the other hand, helps to release wrinkles without applying direct heat or pressure, reducing the risk of causing any harm.”

Best Steamer for Wedding Dress

best steamer for wedding dress

You’ve got your wedding dress, the date is set, and preparations are underway – congratulations! If you’re looking for a wedding dress steamer to touch up any creases and wrinkles that have formed during storage, look no further.

In this post, I’ll cover the best steamer for wedding dresses, whether a handheld steamer, commercial steamer, or travel steamer. I’ll look at the pros and cons of each type of steamer so that you can make the best choice. Let’s jump right in:

Best Portable Steamer for Wedding Dress

Electrolux Handheld Steamer

Electrolux is a quality brand handheld steamer, and I’ve been a fan of it since its release in 2020. Steam horizontally or vertically without water dripping thanks to the built in steam pump.

  • Ceramic coated soleplate
  • 2 steam settings
  • Includes fabric brush and lint brush
  • Can get heavy
  • USA and Canada only.

My choice for a portable steamer for wedding dresses is the  Electrolux Handheld Steamer .

Here’s why this is my best choice for a portable steamer for wedding dresses:

  • Two steam settings – great for lower steam output and lower heat for delicate fabrics.
  • 10oz water tank – allowing the steamer to run for around 15-18 minutes between refills. This is more water than the Conair and Rowenta steamers, so you won’t need to stop and refill as often.
  • Ergonomically designed with a good balance between the steamer head and the water chamber.
  • A ceramic sole plate holds heat much better than cheaper plastic varieties.
  • It can be used horizontally and vertically, so you can get up under the dress and go sideways across the fabric if needed.
  • Quality brand and appliance.

The downsides with this steamer:

  • It can get heavy as you are holding the steamer and water.
  • Slightly higher priced than non-branded steamers. Comparable in price to other leading brands such as Conair and Rowenta.

If you are in the UK , take a look at the Rolipo handheld steamer . It is inexpensive and has two steam settings with excellent steam output.

Canadian Buyers

The Electrolux handheld steamer is also available in Canada. Also, take a look at the CHI garment steamer with 1600 watts of power and a 10ft cord.

Why a Portable Steamer is a Good Choice for Wedding Dresses

If you are travelling for your wedding or getting ready somewhere other than home, a portable garment steamer is easily transported with you.

Portable or handheld steamers tend to heat up much faster than full-size garment steamers, and the length of the steaming hose does not restrict you.

Handheld steamers are also more affordable than full-size steamers or commercial steamers.

The downside is the small water chamber you will need to stop and refill. They can also get a little heavier in your hand than just holding the steamer nozzle with full-size garment steamers.

Jiffy J-4000 Garment Steamer

The Jiffy J-4000 will steam your wedding dress, men’s suits and bridesmaid dresses with ease. This is an excellent choice if you are all getting ready in the same place.

  • Commercially rated clothes steamer
  • Lasts for decades
  • Steams all fabrics, table linens, backdrops, chair covers etc.
  • Needs 15 minutes to heat up

When looking at a standing steamer or home steamer for steaming a wedding dress, one of my absolute favorite steamers is the commercially rated Jiffy J-4000 steamer.

Not only can you steam your wedding dress, but you can also do the bridesmaid dresses, mother of the bride’s dress, all the men’s (or women’s) suits, and more with this heavy-duty machine.

The reason I suggest the J-4000 over other Jiffy models, is the wattage. The J-4000 is a 1500 watt steamer, compared to 1300 watts in the other models. The J-4000 offers superior steaming performance and steam output.

The J-4000 is designed to be set up and left in standby mode. You will need to allow around 15 minutes for the boiler to heat the water, but after that, it will only take 2 minutes to reheat back to steaming from standby mode.

The downside with the Jiffy steamer is it is built like a tank. The base unit is heavy, and although it is on castors so you can roll it around, the idea with this (and most) standing steamers is to stay in one room.

If you are getting ready at home, this steamer is ideal.

A higher price tag comes with a brand such as Jiffy and the quality of the appliance. However, worthwhile if you are in the market for a clothing steamer that you will use repeatedly.

For a cheaper option than the Jiffy steamer, look at the Anthter Steamer.

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B096SVV5H6&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=stmadv 20&language=en US

Anthter Professional Steamer

With a 3-year warranty (comparable to USA-made Jiffy Steamers) the Anthter steamer offers fast heat-up time, a removable water tank, and multiple steam settings. The 1500-watt steamer heats water to 248 degrees – hotter than most garment steamers.

This 1500 watt garment steamer by Anthter has two steam settings, so you can steam any delicate lace, silk or embellishments on your wedding dress on the lower steam setting, and use the higher steam setting for thicker fabrics or tougher wrinkles.

It is backed by a 3-year warranty, heats up in 45 seconds and steams for around 90 minutes continuously – plenty of time for a wedding dress and the bridesmaid’s dresses too!

The steamer weighs around 12 pounds when empty, so not super heavy to transport. You can also collapse down the telescopic poles, making the unit more compact.

Best Travel Steamer for Wedding Dress

Eloping, getting married overseas or if you are located outside of the USA, take a look at the dual voltage travel steamers below. These can be switched between 110V and 220V, usually at the flick of a button on the machine.

My top choice for a dual-voltage travel steamer for wedding dresses is the new Conair Power Steam.

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B0BLHV6DTS&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=stmadv 20&language=en US

  • 1200 watts – higher powered than other dual voltage steamers
  • Small water tank

Wedding Dress Steaming

If you’re planning on steaming your wedding dress, take a look at my  guide to wedding dress steaming. Using my wedding dress as an example, this guide includes instructions and images of how the wedding dress steaming turned out, as well as my at home simple cheat for making a steam bonnet!

How to Choose a Steamer for a Wedding Dress?

When considering a clothing steamer for your wedding dress, think about where you will be steaming the dress. If you are at home, with plenty of room, a power outlet or extension cord close by, and a good supply of distilled water, you could probably choose a larger standing garment steamer.

These are the types of steamers that sit on the floor and hold larger volumes of water, resulting in longer steaming time. The downside is the fixed length of the steam hose. You don’t have as much flexibility as a handheld clothing steamer.

Handheld clothing steamers are larger than they look online. Standing about as tall as a kettle, holding around 10oz of water. Some offer different steaming modes for different types of fabrics.

The functionality of handheld garment steamers and standing garment steamers are the same. Generally, the wattage and steam output are comparable too. The downside with handheld steamers is they hold much less water, making it necessary to refill every 10 minutes or so.

The weight of the steamer can also become heavier on your arm, compared to holding the nozzle only with a standing steamer.

Handheld steamers offer better portability, particularly if you are traveling to get married or need some quick touch-ups on the day. You still need to consider power outlets and extension cords for handheld steamers – there are no cordless steamers on the market yet.

Whatever you choose, make sure you have some distilled water handy. Created from steam, distilled water is the best choice for wedding dress steaming and avoids the build-up of minerals in your steamer. These can cause spitting, marks on your dress, and poor performance from your steamer, with the likelihood that it will stop working fairly quickly.

When looking at the performance of a steamer, I generally look for a minimum of 1500 watts to get the best steam output. If you have a silk, lace or other delicate fabric wedding dress, you can choose a lower wattage steamer for more gentle steam output.

Alternatively, consider choosing a steamer with multiple steam settings. Use the lowest for your wedding dress, and then you’ll be able to steam other articles of clothing after your big day.

If you are heading overseas, consider a dual-voltage steamer to take it abroad on your honeymoon. My article on travel steamers is helpful for other dual-voltage travel steamer options.

The 5 Best Steamers For Wedding Dresses, According To The Pros

Picks that have gotten the thumbs up from pros and Amazon shoppers who’ve used them for their ceremonies.

The best steamers for wedding dresses (like the three handheld models pictured in this image) have e...

When your wedding day comes around, the last thing you want is for your gorgeous gown to be creased and wrinkled — or to damage it with your ironing efforts. But don’t fret: The best steamers for wedding dresses will have enough power to effectively remove these nuisances while still being gentle on your gown, so long as you follow the proper technique and take precautions. As you shop, consider whether you prefer a large standing steamer with a rack or a more lightweight, compact handheld steamer. Also be on the lookout for products with certain extras (like heat time, cord length, and any helpful attachments) that may make the steaming process much easier overall.

The Experts

Kellee Khalil is the founder of Loverly , a website that helps couples simplify their wedding planning, providing everything from advice to inspiration to vendor lists and more. Khalil is also a seven-time bridesmaid and a bride-to-be.

Caitlyn Parish is the co-founder and chief digital officer of Cicinia , which is a company that sells beautiful bridesmaid dresses at a more budget-friendly price. She has over 10 years of experience in both the fashion and beauty industries.

Valentina Ring is the owner of The Stars Inside , an international wedding planning company that specializes in destination weddings and elopements.

Cacky Rivers is the owner and founder of Cacky’s Bride+Aid , which provides helpful wedding day services to the bride and bridal party, including dress steaming.

How To Shop For A Wedding Dress Steamer

To choose the best garment steamer to use on your wedding dress, consider the type of steamer, its wattage, and any other extra features you might need.

Standing Or Handheld Steamer?

Consider whether a standing steamer or a handheld model is a better fit for your wedding day. Standing steamers have a handy rack that you directly hang your garment on (no need to try and find another spot for your gown as you work). They’re large in size with a tank that can usually hold quite a bit of water which makes it a good option you won’t have to refill often if you’re steaming multiple garments. However, Cicinia co-founder Caitlyn Parish notes that “a standing steamer might be too bulky and unwieldy to use on a delicate wedding dress,” and it can also be a little more difficult to travel with should you be getting ready at a location outside of your home, though wheels help to make it more portable.

Wedding planner Valentina Ring prefers using handheld steamers for wedding dresses since they are travel-friendly and “usually give you a little bit more control, are safer for delicate fabrics, and also can be operated with more ease no matter where your dress is being hung or stored.” The downside? You may need to stop mid-steam to refill the water reservoir — but the manufacturer may give you an idea of how much continuous steam the product will provide before needing to be refilled.

The power of a steamer is typically measured in watts, indicating how forcefully it’ll put out steam. Founder of Loverly Kellee Khalil told Bustle in an email: “In general, it is recommended to get a [steamer with a] minimum of 1,500 watts but if you have a delicate fabric (lace, silk, etc.), we recommend getting a lower wattage” to avoid causing damage.

Ring adds that if the steamer has multiple steam settings, you should start on the lowest possible level and increase it “if it seems the steaming isn’t removing the creases effectively.”

Extra Features

Beyond the aforementioned factors, you’ll also want to pay attention to how long it takes for the steamer to heat up and the cord length. Ring also recommends looking for a steamer with a bonnet attachment to prevent water from dripping onto your dress, and she considers it a bonus if “the steamer could be used both vertically and horizontally, as this means that you can get to even the trickiest sections of your dress and veil.”

1. An Expert-Recommended Handheld Steamer

  • Direct recommendation from Kellee Khalil, founder of Loverly
  • Features standard and turbo steam settings
  • Comes with a 3-in-1 attachment for different fabrics

When asked for recommendations on steamers for wedding dresses , Kellee Khalil pointed to this one from Conair as her favorite handheld option, and Amazon reviewers totally dig it, too — the product has garnered a solid 4.4-star rating overall on the site after 16,000-plus reviews. So why all the love for this steamer? Well, it heats up in just 40 seconds, plus it has a 7.3-ounce water tank that’ll provide up to 15 minutes of continuous operation. Two different steam settings allow you to start on the “standard” option and work your way to the more powerful “turbo” one if needed (though remember to proceed with caution).

This pick has a quilted aluminum steamer plate, and it comes with a three-in-one attachment — the silicone band pulls fabric taut for easier steaming, the spacer helps to protect delicate materials, and the bristle brush loosens fibers for a deeper steam. Reviewers have mixed feedback about the length of the power cord; most put it anywhere from 9 and 12 feet long.

Note: The plum-colored steamer has 1,550 watts of power, while the white/champagne option is a slightly different model that puts out 1,875 watts, which may be too much for a wedding gown.

One reviewer wrote: “The most popular item I took with me to my son’s wedding. From getting wrinkles out of dresses to freeing up wrinkles on over 15 table linens last minute that were supposed to be pressed and delivered wrinkle free! It was amazing!”

Type of steamer: Handheld | Wattage: 1,550 watts | Steam settings: 2 | Water tank capacity: 7.3 ounces | Heats up in: 40 seconds | Size: 13.6 x 8.8 x 5.6 inches | Weight: Not specified | Bonnet attachment: No

2. A Lower Wattage Handheld Steamer With An Accessory To Prevent Drips

  • Comes with a protective bonnet accessory to prevent water drips
  • Lower wattage should be suitable for delicate fabrics

With its lower wattage, this handheld steamer from Rowenta is a good option for wedding dresses made from delicate fabrics like lace, silk, and more. Another major plus? This pick comes with three super handy accessories, most notably a bonnet attachment that can prevent any water drips from getting on your precious garment. A fabric brush is meant for heavier materials, while the door hook can be utilized to hang up your dress as you steam. Amazon reviewers have indicated that the power cord on this steamer is about 8 feet long, and the 5-ounce water tank allows for around 10 minutes of continuous steam. Rowenta also offers a 1,400-watt option should you want a steamer with a little more power.

One reviewer wrote: “I needed a steamer for my wedding dress (tulle) and bridesmaids dresses but was really nervous about using one. After reading what felt like every review for every steamer, I bought my ‘top two’ to test out. This one was a clear winner, and comes with a little attachment to prevent water marks. It worked perfectly on my dress and veil. Just in case it’s helpful for any future brides! I’m now using it on every day items also and love it.”

Type of steamer: Handheld | Wattage: 1,100 watts | Steam settings: 1 | Water tank capacity: 5 ounces | Heats up in: 45 seconds | Size: 10 x 5.5 x 5 inches | Weight: 2.5 pounds | Bonnet attachment: Yes

3. An Expert-Approved Standing Steamer

  • Recommended by Cacky Rivers, owner of Cacky’s Bride+Aid
  • Has a large water tank for over an hour of continuous steam
  • The hanger rotates and is height adjustable

If you have a lot of garments to steam and want to go the full-sized steamer route, Cacky Rivers recommends this standing steamer from Conair for use on her client’s wedding days — so you know it has to be a solid choice. With its 80-ounce tank capacity, this steamer will put out 70 minutes’ worth of continuous steam. That means you should be able to steam your wedding dress and a few other garments like bridesmaid dresses or tuxes without needing to stop for a water refill. The attached rack has an adjustable height (up to 5 feet tall, according to shoppers), rotates 360 degrees, and features sturdy clips to secure garments. This steamer is on wheels for easier maneuvering — a major plus considering its bulkier size and weight.

Some Amazon reviewers indicate that the steamer’s power cord is a bit short. However, this likely isn’t as big of a deal as it would be with a handheld option since the steamer head is on a 5-foot-long hose for added reach.

One reviewer wrote: “Bought for my daughters wedding. My wife steamed wedding dress, Suits, flower girls dress etc.. very nice product.”

Type of steamer: Standing | Wattage: 1,500 | Steam settings: 1 | Water tank capacity: 80 ounces | Heats up in: 45 seconds | Size: 17.5 x 17 x 14.25 inches (base) with a detachable telescopic pole | Weight: 10.4 pounds | Bonnet attachment: No

4. A Handheld Steamer With A Large Tank & 18-Minute Steam Time

With a relatively large tank for a handheld model, this Electrolux option is one of the best steamer...

  • Relatively large water tank for a handheld model
  • Can use vertically or horizontally without spilling

This handheld steamer has the largest water tank capacity of all of the handheld options on this list, and it has the largest max run time — a whopping 18 minutes of continuous steam. Plus, it heats up in 30 seconds and weighs just 1 pound, so you’ll be able to maneuver it with ease. Choose from two different steam settings (remember to always start on the lower one when steaming your wedding dress), and use it vertically or horizontally without fear of water spilling due to its design. This steamer boasts a 12-foot power cord and comes with two accessories — the lint brush attachment removes pesky lint, while the fabric brush can help eliminate creases.

One reviewer wrote: “I bought this one for my wedding dress based on the high reviews and the reputation of the brand. The last thing a bride wants are spots from a cheap steamer on an expensive white gown. I used distilled water in it. It heats up quickly and runs long enough to complete the garment. I recommend running it a little away from the garment to get out the initial sputters. It works beautifully after that. Also, the attachment with the lint catcher worked great, especially when I found a little cat hair.”

Type of steamer: Handheld | Wattage: 1,500 watts | Steam settings: 2 | Water tank capacity: 10 ounces | Heats up in: 30 seconds | Size: 12.4 x 7.1 x 7.1 inches | Weight: 1 pound | Bonnet attachment: No

5. A Standing Steamer With 4 Steam Settings

With four different steam settings, this standing PurSteam model is one of the best steamers for wed...

  • Four steam settings for extra customization
  • Lightweight for a standing model
  • Has wheels for better portability

With four different steam settings to choose from, this standing steamer from PurSteam is a customizable option that’s worth the investment, according to Amazon shoppers who’ve used it on their wedding days. (Just remember to start on the lowest setting and work your way up from there should you have issues getting creases or wrinkles out.) The manufacturer doesn’t specify the tank size, but one shopper reported that it “holds well over a quart,” which is “enough for about one hour of steaming.”

Despite its large size, this pick is relatively lightweight, and it’s on wheels. You can hang your garments on the 5.5-foot pole as you steam, and the anti-leak nozzle has an attached fabric brush to eliminate lint. This standing steamer has a 5.5-foot telescopic pole and a 6-foot power cord, and reviewers have estimated the hose length to be about 3 to 5 feet.

One reviewer wrote: “Love this tool. Bought it for my daughters wedding held in our home. Steamed her wedding dress, all the bridesmaids and moms dresses. I use it everyday and love it.”

Type of steamer: Standing | Wattage: 1,500 watts | Steam settings: 4 | Water tank capacity: Unspecified (but upwards of 4 cups, according to shoppers) | Heats up in: 60 seconds | Size: 16.9 x 10.9 x 9.7 inches (base) with a detachable telescopic pole | Weight: 2.2 pounds | Bonnet attachment: No

How To Steam A Wedding Dress

Khalil stresses the importance of purchasing a new steamer for your special day: “Do not rely on the hotel’s or a friend’s! You do not know when it was last used on dark fabric or cleaned.”

After you have your equipment, remember the first rule: Never place the steamer directly on the fabric. And if your dress has detailing like beads or sequins, Khalil mentions you should “try to stay away from them with steam as high heat can melt the gems. You can always steam your dress inside out to miss these details.”

In order to safely and effectively steam your wedding dress , Ring recommends that you take a gentle approach, “working your way from the bottom to the top, so that the steam from the bottom rises and start uncreasing the upper sections while you work on the lower ones.” Cacky Rivers, founder of Cacky’s Bride+Aid, also notes that she starts at the back of the dress first — just in case an issue were to occur.

When it comes to technique, Khalil recommends working in circular motions, layer by layer.

Finally, if you don’t purchase a steamer with a protective bonnet attachment, Ring notes that for a little added protection “you can place a clean white t-shirt or thin white towel over the steamer head to catch any drops of water falling on the dress - or on your arms as you steam!” Don’t forget to steam your veil, too.

How to Steam Your Wedding Dress—Without Ruining It

To steam or not to steam?

travel steamer wedding dress

It's true: There is an art to traveling with your wedding dress. One wrong move, and you could end up with a lost or damaged dress. Whether you're traveling near or far, it's common for a wedding dress to get a little wrinkled. While wrinkles might seem like the least of your problems, they shouldn't be taken lightly. After all, many a fabric has been flawed from the incorrect wrinkle-removal method. Since it's your big day, you don't want a wrinkled wedding dress to get in your way, but you also don't want to make the problem worse by not doing your research first.

Professional steaming will produce the best results; usually, the bridal salon where you purchased your gown or the place that did your alterations will provide this service. But if you've traveled, this likely isn't a viable option. Relax: To get it in tip-top shape, you have a couple of options to choose from. Here, we rounded up our top four tips for ironing or steaming your wedding dress.

Damage Control

As soon as you get your dress (or when your dress gets to you), be sure to put it on a padded hanger right away. You may find that many of the folds will come right out, but chances are the gown will probably need to be steamed a little. Even if the dress has been hanging in the same spot in your closet for weeks, you should still give it one last steaming before the ceremony so it will look fresh.

Minor Wrinkles

For minor wrinkles, Karen Jean-Aimée, director of client relations at Madame Paulette , swears by the old "hang on the bathroom door during a steamy shower" trick. Think of it as creating your own steam room. Cover a bathroom floor with towels and run a very hot shower, allowing the room to fill with steam. (Just don't close the door, or the dress may get overly damp.) Next, wrap your arm in a dry, white towel and run it down the length of the gown, smoothing out any wrinkles. This method is much less likely to leave water spots or iron impressions than a home steamer or iron.

If your dress is particularly creased, try a handheld steamer . Just remember: You never want to apply steam directly to your dress, as water droplets can leave spots. Steaming through a clean white cloth is safer.

"Taffeta, dupioni, and shantung are fabrics I would only hand-press with a dry iron," says Cacky Rivers, owner of Cacky's Bride + Aid in Charleston, South Carolina. "Steaming may wrinkle them even more." Use a clean pressing cloth for heat protection.

There's nothing worse than realizing that you so carefully (or not-so carefully) packed clothes only to have them become a wrinkled mess during transit. While some hotels provide steam irons, Airbnbs or other vacation rental homes don't always supply that household tool. In such situations, especially if you're dealing with delicate fabrics, a travel steamer becomes an essential. These compact units are light enough to pack into a carry-on or duffel bag, yet they deliver powerful steam that eradicates all wrinkles from your clothes in just a few up-and-down motions.

While we haven't had the chance to test travel steamers in The Lab , we did conduct an at-home test with 29 clothes steamers of all kinds—travel steamers included. During this test, we measured each steamer's heat time, considered the water tank capacity, and evaluated the steamer's effectiveness against deep-set wrinkles. After all our testing, we can say: don't let a travel steamer's compact size fool you. Whether you're looking for crease-creating attachments or pocket-size devices, the models below are the best options to reach for when you're in a pinch—or should we say wrinkle?

Best Overall

True & tidy handheld garment steamer.

  • Effectiveness 4 /5
  • Design 5 /5
  • Portability 4 /5

Very lightweight

Large stainless steel soleplate

See-through water tank

Tricky to fill water reservoir

Of all the travel steamers we tested, the True & Tidy Handheld Garment Steamer stood out the most and is the one to undeniably add to your suitcase. This colorful unit weighs just 1.5 pounds, and it breaks down into two pieces, making it extremely easy to stash in a bag of any size. We loved that its water reservoir is completely see-through, which allowed us to monitor exactly how much water was left. And it excelled in our testing, removing tough wrinkles with just a few passes, thanks to its powerful steam and stainless steel soleplate.

This travel steamer comes with a brush attachment that can help smooth fabric as you work, and it was ready to use in around two minutes. The handle stayed cool and comfortable for the duration of our testing, and the on-off rocker switch made the steamer simple and straightforward to operate. Our only woe when it comes to this travel steamer is that the water tank is a bit tricky to fill. You have to pour water in slowly. Otherwise, it backs up and overflows. However, beyond that one quirk, the product exceeded our expectations, earning perfect scores for design and value.

Dimensions:  6.5 x 4.13 x 8.62 inches | Weight: 1.43 pounds | Water Tank Capacity:  4.6 ounces | Power Level: 600 watts | Heat Time:  80 seconds | Steam Time:  10 minutes

The Spruce / Camryn Rabideau

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Pure enrichment portable garment steamer.

  • Effectiveness 3 /5
  • Design 4.5 /5
  • Portability 5 /5

Long power cord

Easy to fill water tank

Not best for deep-set wrinkles

Need to refill tank when steaming multiple garments

A close runner-up is the Pure Enrichment PureSteam Portable Steamer. During testing, we found it was easy to twist off the top nozzle and fill the water tank—a process that wasn't so easy when using our "best overall" pick. Although, this steamer's compact size does mean you'll have to refill it if you have multiple garments to steam. But, we think it offers just enough steam time to finish at least one or two garments. Plus, the power cord is 8 feet long, making it easy to maneuver around your garment and navigate outlets in your hotel room or Airbnb.

This steamer is one of the lightest models we tested at just over 1 pound. It would easily fit into a suitcase or carry-on bag without making your bag overweight or taking up too much space. As is to be expected with smaller clothes steamers , this model isn't the best for eliminating deep wrinkles, but it did efficiently eliminate most wrinkles with just a few passes. All in all, if you're torn between our top recommendations, know that both models are easy to hold and operate, and quick to heat up.

Dimensions:  8 x 5.5 x 3.2 inches |  Weight:  1.13 pounds |  Water Tank Capacity:  4.4 ounces |  Power Level:  800 watts |  Heat Time:  2 minutes |  Steam Time:  10 minutes |  Steam Settings:  1

Best Budget

Black+decker easy garment steamer.

  • Effectiveness 4.5 /5
  • Design 4 /5

Slit in nozzle gives off impressive steam

Large, easy-to-fill water tank

Extremely effective at removing wrinkles

Somewhat bulky design

The great thing about travel steamers is they're typically quite budget-friendly, and one of the best values we found was the Black+Decker Easy Garment Steamer. Despite its low price, this steamer worked extremely well in our tests, removing wrinkles in just one or two passes. We loved that its nozzle has a slit-shaped opening, which allowed more steam to come out and helped deliver faster results.

This travel steamer takes about a minute to heat up, and there's a large window that lets you see into the water tank to monitor how much is left. The top of the unit twists off when you need more water, and we had no issues filling the water tank from the faucet. The steamer is slightly bulkier than other models we tested, but it's still compact enough to fit in a carry-on or another suitcase.

Dimensions:  8.15 x 3.7 inches | Weight: 1.9 pounds | Water Tank Capacity:  7.4 ounces | Power Level: 900 watts | Heat Time:  80 seconds | Steam Time:  8 minutes

Best Splurge

Beautural steamer for clothes.

  • Value 3.5 /5

Includes several handy accessories

Great for creating creases

Longer steam time than average

Accessories allow you to do more with your travel steamer, and the Beautural Steamer comes with three handy attachments: a brush, a lint brush, and a crease clip. This steamer is on the larger side, making it slightly bulky to travel with, but in testing, we liked that it's able to remove most wrinkles within a few passes. We were also impressed with the crease clip, which made crisp, clean creases with just one pass.

The Beautural Steamer only takes a minute or so to heat up, and its water tank delivers up to 15 minutes of steam. We liked that it has a locking trigger for continuous steaming—the only thing we didn't like is that the water tank opening is tiny and awkwardly placed, making it tricky to fill without spilling.

Dimensions:  10.7 x 4.3 x 6 inches | Weight: 2 pounds | Water Tank Capacity:  8.8 ounces | Power Level: 1200 watts | Heat Time:  30 seconds | Steam Time:  15 minutes

Best Compact

Isteam steamer for clothes.

Release button for water tank

Can be used both horizontally and vertically

High-quality brush attachment

Not as effective in horizontal position

If you don't want to sacrifice any more suitcase space than is absolutely necessary, it's worth splurging on the iSteam Steamer. This sleek little device is one of the smallest we tested, yet it blew us away, heating up in less than a minute and delivering enough steam to remove wrinkles in just a few quick passes.

This steamer has a water tank mounted to the front, and an easy-to-press button releases the tank for filling. All of its pieces are made from thick, durable plastic, and we were even impressed with the quality of its brush attachment, which had significantly more bristles than other options. You can even use this steamer at an angle thanks to its no-drip design—though, we found it was less effective in a horizontal position, as the steam tends to taper off a bit.

Dimensions:  9.1 x 6.4 x 4.4 inches | Weight: 1.55 pounds | Water Tank Capacity:  4.1 ounces | Power Level: 900 watts | Heat Time:  25 seconds | Steam Time:  10 minutes

Best for Heavy Materials

Magicpro portable garment steamer.

  • Effectiveness 4.3 /5
  • Design 3.8 /5
  • Value 4.5 /5

Strong steam production

Easy-to-operate trigger

Sturdy, durable form

Can be bulky in suitcase or bag

It generally holds true that the larger the steamer, the more power it packs. The MagicPro Portable Garment Steamer is an unbeatable model in terms of steam output, making it ideal for heavy fabrics like wool or denim. But, the major downside is that it's fairly bulky and takes up quite a bit of space in your suitcase. Still, we were wowed by this steamer, which has a water reservoir attached to the front of its sturdy, durable body. It was able to remove wrinkles in one to two passes, working significantly better than similarly-sized models and earning a perfect score for effectiveness.

The MagicPro Steamer has a trigger-style button that turns the steam off and on, and it automatically locks in, saving you from having to hold it down the whole time. It's ready to use after just one minute of heating—impressive for its size—and it comes with a brush attachment, as well as a lint brush.

Dimensions:  12.8 x 7.09 x 5.35 inches | Weight: 2.81 pounds | Water Tank Capacity:  10.1 ounces | Power Level: 120 watts | Heat Time:  25 seconds | Steam Time:  15 minutes

Best for Wedding Dresses and Delicate Items

Conair 2-in-1 garment steamer.

Heats up extremely fast

Four steam settings

Includes a variety of attachments

Oversized and bulky design

Doesn't work well horizontally

The last thing you want on your wedding day is to accidentally scorch your wedding dress—which is why we recommend the Conair Turbo Extreme Steam for delicate items. This steamer comes with a unique "delicates bonnet" attachment that helps to diffuse the steam, yet it doesn't hamper the unit's effectiveness. It was able to remove wrinkles from fabric in just a few passes in our testing, and we were impressed that it heated up in less than a minute, as well.

There's one major downside to this steamer, and that's its size. The unit is about 1 foot tall and weighs over 3 pounds, making it one of the largest options on this list. It wouldn't be good for frequent fliers who only travel with a carry-on, but we think it would come in handy at weddings or other special events, in particular.

Dimensions:  11.61 x 11.61 x 6.02 inches | Weight: 3.5 pounds | Water Tank Capacity:  8.5 ounces | Power Level: 1875 watts | Heat Time:  < 1 minute | Steam Time:  10 minutes

Final Verdict

To keep your clothes looking fresh on the road, we recommend the True & Tidy TS-10 Handheld Garment Steamer . This compact unit is extremely lightweight and easy to operate, and it delivers an impressive blast of steam that removes wrinkles fast. For a more budget-friendly option, we also like the Black+Decker HGS011F Easy Garment Steamer . While slightly larger, its unique slit opening gives off ample steam for tackling wrinkles in fabrics.

Bear Portable Handheld Clothes Steamer : We have not had a chance to formally test this steamer, but one of our editors, Mia Ingui , says she loves this steamer as a travel option because it's not too cumbersome in her luggage and it effectively removes wrinkles without requiring refills. Plus, it can double as a steam iron in a pinch! While she wishes this model had a power switch, it's still a solid steamer that's also well-designed.

How We Tested the Travel Steamers

We purchased and tested 29 clothes and travel steamers in one of our homes for several hours over the course of two months. To start, we unboxed and set up each steamer, noting how clear the instructions were and how intuitive the design of the steamer is. We noted whether it was durable and practical, and if the buttons were placed well. We also considered whether each model could be described as a stylish option, and if the steamer came with accessories like a case or a brush attachment.

Next, we evaluated the heat time of each steamer by timing with a phone stopwatch how long the water took to heat up. We then used wrinkled linen napkins to test the effectiveness of each steamer and try out all the settings. Throughout our use of the steamers, we asked ourselves the following questions: How quickly did the steamer remove the wrinkles? Did it take one pass, three passes, or five passes to remove them? Did the napkin feel damp afterward? We answered all of these questions before also rating the portability of the product, and noting how easy it was to hold or carry around. We put the travel steamer in a packed carry-on bag to see if it would be practical to pack it in a suitcase and if it drastically altered the weight of the bag.

Lastly, we applied our hands-on experience to rate the overall value of the product and decide if it's worth the money you'd spend on it. All of these insights were boiled down to this list of what we believe are the very best travel steamers.

What to Look for in a Travel Steamer

Heat and steam time.

When comparing different steamers, you'll want to look at their heat and steam times. The former indicates how long the unit takes to heat up and be ready for use, while the latter indicates how long the steamer runs when the tank is full. The longer the steam time, and the larger the water tank capacity, the more garments you can often de-wrinkle in one steaming session, without having to run to the sink to refill the tank.

"I like [a steamer] that has a decent amount of continuous run time—10 minutes, at least—so that you don't have to stop and refill several times," says Melissa Maker of Clean My Space. Our "best for heavy materials," the MagicPro Portable Garment Steamer , has a 15-minute steam time, which could allow you to easily steam a longer dress or multiple T-shirts. While travel steamers sometimes sacrifice steam time due to their small sizes and thus smaller water tanks, all of the models in our roundup have steam times just under or slightly over 10 minutes.

Size and Weight

A steamer's size not only impacts its steam time, but it also determines how packable it is in luggage. If you're going to be packing a steamer in your suitcase, it should ideally be compact and lightweight—otherwise, it will prevent you from packing other necessities. The unit's weight will also impact its usability. "A steamer should be a manageable weight, comfortable to hold, and nicely balanced, so it's not too top or bottom-heavy," says Maker. Our "best overall" pick, the True & Tidy TS-10 Handheld Garment Steamer , is very lightweight at just 1.5 pounds, and it can be separated into two pieces for even more packability.

Design Features

There are multiple design elements to keep in mind when picking out your travel steamer. Although a slimmer travel steamer is great to easily slip into a suitcase, it may be top-heavy and lack a handle, causing a greater risk of accidental burns and complicating the cool down process. For that reason, you want to look for a steamer that has a well-distributed design. Additionally, you should look for a steamer that has an easy-to-access water tank. Some options can be tricky to refill, while others may feature an easy-release button, such as our "best compact" pick, the iSteam Steamer . Our "best for wedding dresses and delicate items" pick, the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam 2-in-1 Garment Steamer , may be one of the bulkiest handheld steamers in this roundup, but it has a comfortable handle and larger water tank.

Most travel streamers are lightweight and portable when you compare them with traditional clothes steamers. Most weigh less than 2 pounds, and some of the more compact varieties are no larger than a travel mug. This makes them easy to slot into even the smallest of suitcases. We particularly love the iSteam Steamer for its compact size. It was the smallest one we tested, but didn't sacrifice effectiveness or features.

Some travel steamers are lighter and more ergonomic than others, making them easier to use. While what's easiest for you ultimately comes down to personal preference, selecting one that you can hold at any angle without the water spilling out is helpful. Those with a larger water tank will save you the inconvenience of refilling them so often, as well. Our "best overall" pick, the True & Tidy TS-10 Handheld Garment Steamer , can be tricky to refill, but is very lightweight and comfortable. Notably, the handle stayed cool for the duration of our testing.

Travel steamers absolutely work! Standard-size clothes steamers are more powerful and carry more water, so they are much better for steaming multiple garments and heavy fabrics, such as wool and denim. However, a quality travel steamer will still effectively lift creases out of the clothes you are taking on vacation or a business trip.

To produce steam, travel steamers need to generate water temperatures of more than 200 degrees Fahrenheit. That means you need to use any clothes steamer with care , to avoid accidental burns and spills. For use with heavier fabrics, temperatures can reach as high as 395 degrees Fahrenheit on many standard clothes steamers, but the less powerful travel varieties don't often reach these temperatures.

While they may seem similar, steamers and irons serve different purposes in the laundry room. Steamers use hot steam to relax fibers within a fabric, while irons are used to press and smooth fabric and create creases. Further, steamers are typically used vertically on hanging garments, while irons require a horizontal surface, such as an ironing board .

Yes, travel steamers can be packed in a carry-on or checked bag. Just make sure they don't contain any liquid.

Steamers are effective at sanitizing clothing due to the hot temperature of their steam, but they don’t necessarily clean your garments. The hot air kills bacteria, but it doesn’t get rid of dirt, grime, odors, or sweat that may be on your clothing.

6 Best Steamers for a Wedding Dress in 2022: Reviewed

Betty Hathaway

Every bride wants their wedding dress to look gorgeous on their special day. No one wants to wear a wrinkled mess of a dress.

You already have a lot on your plate and ironing your wedding dress takes a lot of time and patience, especially if it comes in many layers.

This is why the best thing you can do, instead of spending a lot of money on cleaning and unwrinkling your dress, is to invest in a steamer. There are many steamers out there, moreover, what are the best steamers for a wedding dress?

A Quick Look at My Favorite Steamers for Wedding Dresses

Key Takeaways

  • Handheld steamers are usually the best for steaming your wedding dress
  • Steaming a dress takes a maximum of 3 hours.
  • Hot steam is used to relax fibers and remove any type of wrinkles from them.
  • Search for light and comfortable steamers as you will need to use them for longer than an hour
  • This Beautural steamer is the overall best steamer on this list

6 Best Steamers for a Wedding Dress

If you’re wondering what the best 6 steamers for wedding dressers are, I’m here to help you. I’ve picked out a few of my personal favorite garment steamers, which would come in handy if you are traveling somewhere for your wedding and you want your wedding gown to look spotless and with no kink or wrinkle.

You absolutely do not want to use the fabric steamer they provide you with in the hotel. You can’t count on it being in perfect condition, as it won’t be. In most cases, the steamer you’re going to find is filthy, probably overused, and rusty.

Without any further ado, let’s get into the list of the best steamers for your dress created to cater to the needs of your gorgeous wedding gown.

6. Rowenta DR8120 X-Cel Powerful Steamer – Best Overall

travel steamer wedding dress

Coming in first on this list is The Rowenta DR8120 X-Cel steamer. It’s a powerful device that is perfectly suited for steaming and rejuvenating your suit, shirt, or dress. It comes in 2 versions of different wattages, 1600 and 1875 Watts.

It also comes in two different color schemes, dark blue and white and blue and black. It is made with a metal plate which helps with its heating.

It has a pretty fast heating time of about 40 seconds. This is possible because of the steam that comes out of the metal plate in hopes of removing even the most stubborn of wrinkles on your jackets, coats, shirts, or other clothing, in this case, your wedding dress.

A pro for this steamer is the fact that it’s perfectly fine with using regular tap water unlike most of the other steamers on this list. It’s also suitable for getting wrinkles out of thick materials such as beddings or drapes. This is an overall great investment in a steamer.

A con about it is the fact that its continuous steaming time is about 10 minutes, which isn’t all that long, especially if you’re steaming a dress which could take hours.

travel steamer wedding dress

What I Like About It

  • Customizable steam output
  • Long Continuous Steam
  • Can use regular tap water instead of deionized water
  • You can pick whether you want to get a 1600 or a stronger 1875 Watt version

What I Dislike About It

  • It works for only a small amount of time, up to 10 minutes.
  • It’s a lot more expensive than its value
  • It takes a bit longer to heat up

Why Should You Buy It?

It’s great and lightweight, perfect to hold while steaming something for hours, and comes in two varieties of stylish designs and color combinations.

5. J-2000 Jiffy Garment Steamer – Most Efficient

travel steamer wedding dress

The J-2000 Jiffy Garment Steamer is a great steamer option for freshening up your wedding dress. Despite its wattage of 1300 Watts, it’s one of the most powerful steamers on this list while being sustainable.

This is not a hand-held steamer. It’s a full-size steamer that weighs 7kg which makes it the biggest steamer on this list.

However, using this steamer is great when you want to freshen up your wedding dress since it’s not a small clothing item and you’ll have to spend at least an hour to fully steam the entirety of it. Its 3liter reservoir makes long periods of usage possible.

Its build consists of a high-impact plastic housing which is pretty durable and a plastic or metal steam head, connected with a metal pipe. It comes in 2 color variants, pink and beige; with a metal or a plastic steam head.

It has a heating time of about 2 minutes, which isn’t that big of a deal when you consider its size. So, if you don’t have to travel and just want a great steamer to freshen up your wedding dress, this is it.

It does a great job of removing any kind of wrinkles. This makes it perfect for rejuvenating the many layers of your wedding dress.

travel steamer wedding dress

  • J-2000 Jiffy Garment Steamer has a sustainable energy consumption because it runs on 1300 Watts
  • It’s great at removing any wrinkles and works wonders with thick fabrics
  • It has a 3liter water tank, so the 2-minute heating time isn’t all that long
  • The beige and especially the pink version looks very modern
  • It’s quite a large steamer which you can’t really take with you if you’re planning to travel and use it on the go
  • It doesn’t ship out of the USA

If you live in the USA this is the perfect steamer for you. Being able to use this steamer for long periods on top of its modern minimalistic but chic look adds to the reasons why you should get this steamer for your wedding dress.

4. Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam – Best Runner-Up

travel steamer wedding dress

The Conair Turbo Extreme Steam is a great option for buying a steamer that weighs only 200grams. It comes in white and plum colors and the plate from where the heat comes out is quilted which makes it look more modern and trendy.

It has a special smart safety sensor that ensures your safety. On top of that, it has quite a long steaming time for a steamer that weighs only 200grams. It’s compact and great for traveling.

This Conair steamer is a 2-in-1 device and iron and performs fantastically at doing both of those functions.

It comes together with 3 attachments, a bristle brush, a silicone band, and a fabric spacer. The number of functions makes it surprising how light and compact it is.

3. Electrolux Portable Handheld Garment and Fabric Steamer – Best Value

travel steamer wedding dress

The Electrolux Portable Handheld Steamer is an amazing fabric steamer. It weighs about 450g and has a wattage of 1500 Watts. It’s black and stylish. It’s amazing for using it to freshen up your dress as it has a great removable water tank that can store about 300ml of water.

This makes it an amazing 2-in-1 device that can be used as a steamer and a clothing iron at the same time. It has a steam nozzle that is held in place by a ceramic plate. This helps it heat up pretty fast which makes it a great steamer for how compact it is.

Its pump steam technology, however, doesn’t hold up to the advertising that it can be used horizontally or vertically as it sometimes leaks.

It comes together with a fabric as well as a lint brush as extras inside the packaging box. I’d recommend buying this steamer for your wedding dress because it not only does an amazing job at steaming and refreshing the fabric you’re working with but also it’s compact enough so you can take it with you anywhere.

travel steamer wedding dress

  • It is fully equipped, portable, and easy to travel with.
  • It has a low wattage of 1500 Watts.
  • Functions on the principle of sustainable energy sources.
  • It is environmentally friendly.
  • It heats up very fast for about 30s
  • Despite the manufacturer’s description, it can sometimes spill water and could potentially hurt you if the water lands on your skin.
  • It’s not as efficient in removing wrinkles as advertised.
  • There are rare cases of the machine fully breaking down.

It’s environmentally friendly, and if that doesn’t sound like a green flag, it’s also affordable and quite compact. The Electrolux steamer is amazing at removing wrinkles, so it’s the perfect travel companion for your destination wedding.

2. Philips Steam & Go Handheld Steamer – Best Design

travel steamer wedding dress

This Philips Steam & Go Handheld Steamer comes with protective gloves, a heat-protective bag, and a brush attachment for the head. It can also be bought with a fabric shaver in different colors. It has quite a slick and modern design with a black and gold color scheme.

It’s compact and very easy to travel with. One of the most compact steamers on this list. However, it’s not as lightweight as you’d expect it to be. I’d say its weight of almost a kilo is a little bit of a drawback.

Of course, its small build comes with the disadvantage of having to refill its small water tank quite fast. It’s great for steaming everyday garments, as you can comfortably steam about 3 medium-sized pieces of clothing.

It isn’t that much of a hassle for that purpose. However, having to continuously hold it for about 3 hours would be a daunting task, and having to refill it every few minutes could become annoying.

However, it has a great heat-up time it says 45 seconds but honestly, it heats up even faster than that and it’s ready to use right away with a 1300 Watt power usage.

travel steamer wedding dress

  • Slick design and pretty color scheme
  • Usable even with delicate fabrics
  • Easily portable and very easy to use
  • Comes together with a fabric shaver and extra equipment
  • Must use distilled water
  • Small water container
  • Kind of heavy

It’s a nice-looking device that comes together with a few different parts in its packaging. Offers a modern quality build that helps in removing stubborn wrinkles.

1. Beautural Steamer  – Best Budget-Friendly

travel steamer wedding dress

This Beautural steamer for clothes is amazing, and my personal favorite off of this list. It’s a steamer that you can use on any type of fabric, this also includes a veil. It’s great at removing wrinkles and steaming your wedding dress should take at most 3 hours if you do it by yourself. However, as a bride, you shouldn’t worry about steaming your own dress. So, having anyone with you that can help out with the steaming would be great because you don’t want to sit in a room that resembles a sauna and risk ruining your makeup.

Whether you hire a professional or ask someone for help with steaming your dress, make sure to carry a bottle of water with you. Distilled water is preferred, as tap water could damage and cause build-up on your steamer.

Its build consists of a detachable 260ml water tank suited for 15 minutes of continuous usage. It has a wattage of 1200 Watts and heats up for about 30 seconds.

It comes in 3 different colors: aqua, purple, and blue. It’s portable, handheld, and comes together with 2 brushes, a lint one and a creaser, along with a creaser.

travel steamer wedding dress

  • Long steam time of up to 15 minutes
  • Diversity of color variations
  • Usable with many fabrics
  • Doesn’t do a perfect job of ironing

It’s lightweight and pretty easy to hold, it comes with extra brushes and does its job of removing wrinkles pretty well. It does wonders on any type of fabric and comes in different gorgeous color variations.

What To Look for When Buying a Steamer

travel steamer wedding dress

Comfort and Size

When choosing a steamer to clean and iron your wedding dress, it’s important to consider both size and comfort. This depends on your needs and wants. You could be searching for a steamer portable and easy to travel with or you need a steamer that isn’t going to need any refills.

I’d recommend handheld steamers if you’re traveling and floor-standing steamers if you can afford to steam your dress at home.

You don’t need something very expensive, as you’re already spending a lot of money on the wedding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is steaming your wedding dress required.

Steaming your wedding dress rejuvenates and gets rid of unwanted wrinkles. Even if it’s not all that wrinkled and it has been in the same spot for a few months, it’s going to require steaming.

How do I steam my wedding dress?

You could steam the same way you would if you were ironing it, or you could let it hang and you run the steamer from top to bottom until you notice that the creases are gone.

How long does steaming a wedding dress take?

Depending on your wedding dress it could take from 1 to 3 hours.

Final Verdict

In conclusion, the reason buying a steamer is great when it comes to refreshing your wedding dress is that you can do it yourself. It costs less than hiring a professional and it’s very convenient.

How to travel with a wedding dress, according to the experts

By Erika Owen

How to travel with a wedding dress according to the experts

Travelling with your dress (or suit) probably doesn’t make many people’s “things that are really stressing me out” list at the beginning of planning a destination wedding. But wait until 24 hours before you leave for the airport and it’ll sink in. Do you have the right garment bag? Where is that steamer you bought three years ago during the sales? Carry-on or checked bag? Unfortunately, no amount of Googling will give you the peace of mind you need – there just isn’t much information out there tackling airline restrictions and guidelines around travelling with important outfits.

A quick online search will surface many tales of unsuccessful attempts to transport dresses and suits from Point A to Point B. Don’t get discouraged. To help you avoid even more stress on your big trip, we spoke with two people who have worked with couples around the world looking to celebrate their love in a place known for its destination weddings: Iceland . Even better news, their advice translates just about wherever you're headed.

Ahead, Íris Anna Groeneweg, the manager of onboard services and procurement at Icelandair, and Birna Bjornsdottir, an event planner and co-owner of Pink Iceland based in Reykjavik, weigh in with their tips for making your flight (and outfits) as smooth as possible.

All products featured in this story are independently selected by our editors. However, when you buy something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Whatever you do, don’t pack your outfit into a checked bag

“Take everything you need for your wedding day in your carry-on , from shoes to hair accessories and everything in between,” says Bjornsdottir. “A couple arrived this morning without their checked luggage . But they had everything they needed for the wedding (happening the day after they arrived) and will have the delayed luggage delivered to their Airbnb .” Groeneweg agrees: “We recommend that passengers take important items as carry-on luggage, as check-in luggage can never be 100 percent guaranteed.”

Don’t just throw your stuff into your carry-on – bring some strategy to the task. Bjornsdottir suggests organising all of the items into small bags and laying them out the night before to avoid any day-of anxiety.

Reach out to the dress or suit designer for packing advice

Before you even think about how to carry-on your dress or suit, think about how you’re going to prepare it for the trip. “Nobody can advise you better than the designer,” says Bjornsdottir. “They definitely have an opinion and expertise on how to hang, roll, fold, and store your dress or suit and accessories.”

Garment bags are a must

There’s no getting around this one. The best way to make sure your clothing doesn’t fall prey to another traveller’s spilled coffee, or get run over by a rampant suitcase, is to pack it in a garment bag. You’ll still want to follow Bjornsdottir’s suggestion about getting the designer’s advice, as each garment will have its own quirks to consider, even when hanging. “Think about getting a garment bag with a hanger for better transport in the airport. This enables you to hang on strollers and even some suitcases while walking through the airport,” says Groeneweg. “Something that is easy to fold is also great in case you have to use the overhead compartment. And make sure it has a zipper, just in case customs or security will need to have a look in the bag.”

The world of garment bags can be overwhelming, so check with your designer for specific recommendations. If you bought something off the rack, there are a few reliable elements of a good garment bag: water-resistant material, zipper access and a built-in hanger (or space to use a hanger). If it has a few pockets, even better. Consider how large your outfit is; the space will fill up quickly when you’ve got a dress packed with tulle. If the latter is what you’re working with, opt for something like the Niviy long dress garment bag . Not only is it great for security thanks to its see-through design, but you’ll be able to keep an eye on it to ensure the dress isn’t bunching up. If you have a smaller dress with a fabric that can be rolled or folded, consider something more compact like the convertible garment bag from Modoker that doubles as a duffel and has a convenient shoulder strap.

Some suitcase brands even have garment bags made specifically for their own designs, like Away ; those who own the Bigger Carry-On have the option to add a centerfold garment sleeve. An option like this is best for outfits that have already been pressed or can be folded, as you will only have so much room to work with.

Contact the airline prior to travel

Don’t wait until you’re at the airport to let the airline know you’re travelling with precious (fashion) cargo. If possible, ask for an extra carry-on allowance well in advance to avoid any issues at the check-in desk or in security. “Make sure it will be registered in the booking,” Groeneweg says. “And mentioning the reason is good too.” And cover all of your bases: “It’s always beneficial to contact the airline prior to travel,” she continues. “For example, Icelandair would contact the crew and inform them about passengers travelling with garment bags. Speak to the employee at the check-in desk when arriving at the airport to get confirmation prior to going through security.”

Like with any travel plan, make sure to flag any prior communication around extra carry-on allowances in your email inbox so it’s easy to reference when checking your bags.

Make sure you’ll have access to a steamer at your destination

It may sound like a given, but it’s easy to leave off of the packing list when you’re preparing for such a big trip. “I can’t tell you how many steamers Pink Iceland has had over the years. We feel it’s an essential thing for a wedding planner to have as not all accommodations have steamers – in some cases you cannot iron the outfit,” says Bjornsdottir. “If you’re having a destination wedding and don’t have a local on the ground, I would recommend a powerful travel steamer , or check with the place you are staying the night before your wedding to see if they have one.” But that’s not all: avoid last-minute scrambles by checking the voltage and type of plug before you leave. The last thing you want is to give away precious suitcase space to a tool you can't even use.

If you plan on bringing your own steamer, find something with a bit of power. Philips compact and foldable handheld steamer with pouch is a great option. This one has an eight-foot cord (perfect for hotel bathrooms with weird outlet situations) and warms up in less than a minute.

Notify gate personnel and board early

Set yourself up for success and share your situation with another important group: gate personnel. Oftentimes, you may be able to board early to improve your odds at getting closet space or at least alert the crew to your situation. “When boarding starts, it is important to board early, before all passengers are on board,” says Groeneweg. “It’s not good to be the last one to board and leave storage space up to chance.”

Remember: not all airplanes have closet storage

The most suggested move you’ll see people sharing is to ask the airline crew to hang garment bags for the flight. And while that may be fine in some cases, it’s not possible for some routes. “If there is a coat room or wardrobe on the aircraft, the dress would most likely be stored there,” Groeneweg says. “But at Icelandair, we only have these in half of the fleet – specifically not in our 737s.” But all is not lost – and definitely don’t lose your cool if it’s not available to you. There’s always an alternative. “If they are flying on a 737, a crew member will help place the dress in the overhead compartment,” Groeneweg continues. Yet another reason to board early because that space is full.

Don’t let the excitement of finding the perfect outfit be shadowed by a long-haul flight. Take these tips for travelling with a wedding dress or suit, integrate them into your planning, and make sure to be extra-nice to the flight attendant helping you store your garment bag.

It’s incredibly likely you’ll want to steam your wedding gown before your special day. It’s by far the safest way of smoothing any unwanted creases and wrinkles after you’ve transported your dress.

steaming

So we thought we’d create a blog post full of handy tips on how to steam your bridal outfit. After all, you don’t want any nasty mishaps on your special day, so take heed of this advice!

Let’s dive in!

Prepare Properly

Fill the steamer with clean water and snap the lid shut. Make sure it’s firmly closed. No water should seep from the machine. Before using the steamer, ensure the hose attachments are entirely secure.

Now, hang the dress either on a door or from the ceiling (somewhere you can efficiently get to work), and turn the steamer on. Not only will this prevent a nasty backache but it’ll make it easier for you to steam every inch of your gown.

Most steamers will have an indicator light to tell you when it’s ready to use. When it’s time, you should hold the hose approximately 10 inches away from the dress.

Allow Your Steamer at Least 30 Seconds to Warm Up

When you first turn on your steamer, it’s cold, so there’s a good chance there’ll be a few drops of water on the nozzle. Our best advice is to give it at least 30 seconds to warm up and reach its optimum temperature.

Before you point it anywhere near your dress,  flick the nozzle toward the ground a few times. This will get rid of any rogue droplets of condensation. The last thing you want is for these drops to dribble onto your dress. This could stain the pristine fabric!

Steam Through a Clean Sheet

Never apply steam directly to your gown. Even if you keep the nozzle a good ten inches away from your dress, still run the risk of water accidentally splattering onto your outfit. Therefore, we suggest steaming your dress through a clean white sheet. You’ll still be able to eradicate the creases without risking any damage.

Start at the top of your dress and gradually make your way down to the bottom. Repeat this motion (front and back of the dress) until you’re happy with the result.

Always Keep the Nozzle Horizontal

Once the steamers warmed up and you’ve made sure the nozzles clean, you’re ready to get to work. Chances are the hose on your steamer looks like a funnel.

So, while you’re using it, condensation will naturally form around the edges. It’s imperative you hold the nozzle horizontally. This will allow any droplets to roll back into the hose, rather than dripping on your dress.

Do NOT turn the nozzle to its side. This encourages condensation to form within the hose and drops of water are more likely to seep out of the bottom of the steam hole, and onto your bridal gown- which is the last thing you want to happen!

Hang Your Dress Properly

Sometimes, you won’t even need to steam your dress if you hang it up properly while you transport it  (however, we understand that sometimes that’s not possible).

We suggest using a padded hanger; this often helps keep the creases at bay. Be sure to consult with your tailor and get their advice on how best to store and transport your gown.

wedding gown

Get Rid of Any Tough Creases

If you’re struggling with an unusually harsh crease, then use your hand to add a little tension to the fabric and steam over it. This is by far the most straightforward technique for tackling a particularly stubborn crease.

Top Tip: As tempting as it is to keep going over the same piece of fabric to get it perfect, don’t. All you’ll do is make it damp, which not only affects the appearance of the delicate fabric but it’ll make even more prone to creasing, hence diminishing all your hard work and effort!

dress

Does Your Wedding Dress Have Layers?

If your underskirt has plenty of layers, it can be tricky to know where to begin. However, we recommend starting from the bottom layer and gradually working your way out.

Not only will this get rid of any wrinkles but it’ll also accentuate the layers and help your dress hold its beautiful shape.

Alternatively, if your dress features gather or ruches, we suggest steaming them from the inside of the dress. This technique is less abrasive and will stop any unwanted creases forming in these tricky areas.

wedding dress

Stay Away from Any Detailing

If your gown boasts delicate detailing, then we suggest keeping steam away. By detailing we mean embellishments like beads, sequins, diamontes, etc.

Just like ruches and gathers, it’s far safer to steam these areas from inside the dress. This ensures that the steam doesn’t weaken the stitches so that every inch of your beautiful dress stays intact before you walk down the aisle.

dress

Don’t Forget the Veil!

Depending on your style of dress and the kind of material you’ve opted for, you might not even need to steam it. If you can get away without doing anything to your gown, we thoroughly recommend doing that.

As the age-old saying goes; ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ By not steaming your dress you automatically reduce the likelihood of accidentally damaging it.  Plus, it’s one less thing you need to worry about on the lead up to your special day.

However, veils are way more likely to wrinkle, so you’ll probably need to fix that. Especially, if your dress is looking beautifully crisp, it’ll only make the creases in your veil stand out all the more.

Luckily for you, steaming a veil is even easier than steaming a dress and the results are worth the effort.

Top Tip: we always suggest setting your steamer to its lowest temperature. This is especially important if your veil’s vintage. You want to avoid melting any delicate designs or fabrics!

Now that we’ve covered some handy hints and tips let’s turn our attention to some of the most frequently asked questions on how to use a steamer.

What Do I Do If I Drip on the Dress?

In the unfortunate event that you accidentally drip on your dress, never fear. All you have to do is carefully reverse the nozzle and use the back to dry it. Alternatively, you could use a hairdryer (on a cool setting) and gently blow it dry. Use whatever method you’re more confident doing.

Is There a Chance I’ll Damage the Dress?

In short, yes, but realistically probably not. If you get a good quality steamer, you should be fine. Steamers are different to irons in so much that they use a much lower temperature. Therefore, the chances of burning or melting any of the fabrics are way less in comparison to using a bog standard iron. However, we always suggest consulting with your dressmaker and the manufacturer of the steamer to make sure you’re treating your gown properly. Then, test a small patch of the dress in an area that won’t be seen, just to make doubly sure before you steam your entire outfit.

Can I Use My Steamer for Anything Else?

Brides can use steamers for all sorts of things. For example, you might want to utilize this piece of kit to do any of the following:

  • Shaping silk flowers
  • Removing bruises from satin shoes
  • Ironing out chair covers
  • Removing wrinkles from marquee linings

You get the idea. The bottom line is that steamers come in pretty handy when you’re planning a wedding!

Best Steamer For Wedding Dress [My Top 3 Picks & Why]

Everlasting Occasion Team

Are you looking for a reputable and reliable steamer for your wedding dress? Do you want a dependable device that will allow you to remove any wrinkles – whether that be in the weeks leading up to your special day or on the day of?

Well, you’ve come to the right place.

With my wedding day fast approaching, I decided to research the market to find a steamer for my own dress. Besides, my dress wasn’t cheap so I didn’t want to take any risks here!

As a result, I’d like to share with you the steamers that were in contention, and the one I personally opted for and would recommend.

Before I move into the respective pros of each model, here are my top picks:

Professional Steamer for Clothes, Anthter 1500W Powerful Full Size Garment Steamers, 35s Fast Heat-up, 90 Mins of Continuous Steam Wrinkle Remover with 2.5L Water Tank, Perfect for Household

Table of Contents

Best Steamer For Wedding Dress

Here are my top picks for the best steamers for a wedding dress:

  • Anthter Professional Steamer.
  • KOTLIE Professional Steamer.
  • Hilife Handheld Steamer.

Anthter Professional Steamer

The Anthter Professional Steamer is my #1 pick and for many reasons .

This particular unit will heat up in just 35 seconds and will heat to a much-needed 248 °F. This will ensure the steam can penetrate your dress sufficiently, removing wrinkles fast, efficiently, and safely.

It’s also been designed to prevent water leakages and spillages – which are a common cause of stains and water spots.

Of course, for your wedding, this will simply not do.

Another benefit is that this particular steamer works on all types of fabric; so you will be able to use this well beyond your wedding day (it will actually be a long-term investment piece too!)

You can even use it on suits, other clothing, or even household items like bed linens, curtains, or table cloths!

And here’s my favorite feature which sets it apart from other steamers.

The heating panel is made from stainless steel which is naturally anti-rust, and anti-oxidation and will last much longer than other materials, such as aluminum.

What I Like About The Anthter Steamer

  • Incredibly quick and easy to set up and install,
  • The design gives you a hanger to hang your wedding dress
  • Auto-shutoff functionality – which will prevent overheating or breakage due to water storage.
  • Large water capacity size – 2.5l which ensures it can steam for up to 90 minutes, continuously, should you need it.
  • 3-year satisfaction assurance and warranty
  • Great customer support for any queries you may have.

KOTLIE Professional Steamer

My #2 pick and the runner-up is the KOTLIE steamer. This compact device is another one you should certainly consider.

This particular steamer can actually reach 302°F – resulting in faster de-wrinkling. Just bear in mind it is, therefore, more dangerous to work with.

Nevertheless, KOTLIE has designed their steamer with a protective handle and ceramic ironing board which all but eradicates the chances of damage (and therefore makes it ideal for your wedding dress).

Another feature I like is the auto-clean mode which ensures it works optimally and gunk does not collect or clog the air vents.

Lastly, I love the fact that you are provided with an anti-scalding glove to keep you safe and prevent you from being scalded by the hot steam!

What I Like About The KOTLIE Steamer

  • Iron and a steamer all at the same time! Can be used interchangeably.
  • Three different steaming modes – low, medium, or high depending on how and where you want to use it.
  • The design makes it easy to store away when not in use.
  • Very well made from quality materials.

Hilife Handheld Steamer

My budget pick is the Hilife Handheld Steamer.

If you are looking for a transportable device that you can use on the morning of your wedding, this could be what you need.

It’s a phenomenal value and is great for dresses that only have a few subtle wrinkles.

Despite being lightweight and having lower wattage/water capacity than the other recommendations above, it provides a lot of steam.

It’s very easy to use, solid, and heats up quickly.

Many brides and bridesmaids have used this particular device with great success too, which is comforting and reassuring to know.

You do just need to be particularly careful with this device as there is no spill protection installed. Tipping the steamer, for instance, can cause leakage.

What I Like About The Hilife Steamer

  • Over 70,000 positive customer reviews.
  • Incredibly cost-effective
  • Small, handheld, and lightweight – easily transportable (fits in a night bag or suitcase) and great for last-minute steaming!
  • Ships out fast so you should have it delivered in no time.

How Do You Steam A Wedding Dress?

To steam a wedding dress you need to:

  • First turn your steaming device on, giving it sufficient time to warm up (according to the instructions given by the manufacturer or that are true to the device.
  • Go in through the inside of your dress and steam from the inside out. You can see how your dress reacts this way. Be sure to steam from a distance of 3-5″.
  • Once you have steamed from the inside, you can do a ‘finishing touch’ by steaming any remaining wrinkles on the outside of your dress. Again be sure to keep a distance of 3-5″.
  • When steaming, work around an area in a quick circle. Do not hold in one spot as this can cause steamer marks/spots. Work quickly until all of your wrinkles are gone.
  • Return back to areas where wrinkles remain, again in a circular motion.

Tips For Steaming Your Wedding Dress

  • Always buy a new steamer for your wedding day, and never rely on a hotel or resort steamer. You don’t know when it was last used and when it was last cleaned.
  • Always clean the head prior to use with a clean white towel.
  • Consider covering the steamer head with a safe fabric, such as a white t-shirt or white towel. This can help collect any water drops that would otherwise leave a mark. It can also keep you protected from the steam.
  • Keep a safe distance , and never put any body part to close to, or directly in the steam.
  • Don’t forget to steam your veil – just be sure to do so on a low setting and be careful of any decorations that could be damaged.
  • If you have a structured dress, consider pressing instead of steaming. Or be extra careful.
  • Be careful when you put your dress on – otherwise, you can put all of the wrinkles back in. Generally, it is easiest to put your shoes on first and have someone put your dress over you (while standing on a chair), or have somebody help you get into it.
  • Don’t stress – a few wrinkles are natural and may develop as the day ensues anyway. People are not looking for the wrinkles in your dress, nor can you prevent them entirely. Your photographer should be able to adjust the dress or touch up photos should the need arise.

Final Verdict

So there you have it – the  best steamers that are most suitable for wedding dresses.

When making your choice, first consider the design and how it works. You should ensure you know how you need to use it before putting it anywhere near your dress!

Second, decide if you want this to be a long-term investment or something that you use only for your wedding dress and for this special occasion.

Third, where do you intend to use it? Is this something that you are going to want to use at the venue, or is it something you want to use long in advance of your day and be able to leave at home?

Finally, examine some of the additional features, like the length of any cords or accessories that come included (or will need).

Nevertheless, these steamers have all been used by brides with great success. They all have been hand-selected for being reputable, reliable, and affordable devices that will get any wrinkles out of your dress.

That being said, my recommendation is to get the Anthter Steamer . It is professional-grade, and one of the most expensive garments you will likely ever buy, after all.

Can you steam a wedding dress yourself?

You can steam a wedding dress yourself, so long as you use the right kind of device and do so correctly. It is generally safest to steam from the inside of the fabric without ever touching the steamer directly to the fabric (staying 3-5″ away to protect the dress.

How long does it take to steam a wedding dress?

Steaming a wedding dress can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. It depends on your dress, the style, how many wrinkles need to be removed, and the type of streaming device (how hot it gets, etc.) that you are using.

How much does it cost to get a wedding dress professionally steamed?

It can cost anywhere from $100-$500 to get a wedding dress professionally steamed.

Categories Romantic Getaways

Wondering how to travel with a wedding dress? Yikes! Traveling with your wedding dress can be an overwhelming task, one that is often not even properly thought about till the last minute.

We recently traveled with a wedding dress to get married in Colorado and then for a bigger ceremony in Africa so we know a thing or two about traveling with a dress. Actually, we didn’t stop there, we took photos with our dress around the globe.

Why travel with your wedding dress, you ask? Well, if you’re planning a destination wedding in a picturesque location, it’s only fitting that you take your beautiful dress along with you.

A near 25% of weddings in the US (350,000) every year are destination weddings.

However, the challenges of traveling with a wedding dress can often be overwhelming for any bride. That’s why it’s important to prepare well in advance. Take the time to research airline restrictions, select the right garment bag, and request any additional allowances from your airline.

Trust us, you don’t want to be in for a rude awakening when you’re standing at the check-in desk 24 hours before your flight. So, sit back, relax, and read our tips on how to ensure smooth sailing for your dress on your big day.

Keep reading for our comprehensive guide for flying with your wedding dress stress-free.

How to Travel With A Wedding Dress: 5 Tips when Flying with a Wedding Dress

How to travel with your wedding dress

1. Choose the Right Garment Bag For taking a Wedding Dress on the Plane

So, you’ve found the perfect dress for your destination wedding . Congratulations! But now comes the tricky part: getting it to your venue in one piece. The key to a successful journey with your dress is finding the right garment bag.

Selecting the right garment bag for your dress is crucial. It must be sturdy enough to protect the fabric while being carried around, in transit and also being checked-in. Always look for bags that have padded interiors to avoid any damage to the dress while traveling.

Tips to choose the right garment bag include scouting for bags that offer ample space for the dress, along with additional compartments to store accessories like your veil or jewelry.

Ensure the zipper of the garment bag is sturdy and high quality. Don’t be tempted to skimp on buying a cheaper bag, as it could wind up costing you much more in repairs or replacement.

Destination weddings can provide the BEST photos

Where to buy Wedding dress Garment Bags?

When it comes to garment bag options, the market has a lot to offer. You can find a range of garment bags here .

You can choose between convertible garment bags that double as duffels, bags with built-in humidifiers, or even carry-on garment bag options for a quick pre-wedding touch-up. However, be mindful of the pros and cons of the different garment bags options before making your final decision.

Remember, traveling with a wedding dress doesn’t have to be an anxiety-inducing experience. Choose the right garment bag, and you’ll be one step closer to making this journey hassle-free!

Need a tip? This is a great quality garment bag we would recommend. Here are some others to consider:

Check out this wedding gown garment bag on Amazon . It features durable zippers that operate smoothly and two sturdy handles on the back. It can be easily folded and hung on a hanger, making it ideal for both transportation and closet storage while traveling.

2. Check airline weight limits

One important thing to do is to check airline weight limits to make sure you have enough weight to bring your dress (as well as all other luggage you have!!) with you.

You also need to make the decision about whether you are going to check your wedding dress underneath or bring it on the plane in carry on luggage. We chose to bring it on in our carry on luggage as we have had checked in luggage go missing before.

Wedding dresses plus all your accessories and a suit for your man will likely weigh 22 lb (10 kg) if you have a large dress.

Traveling with a wedding dress can be stressful, especially when it comes to fitting it into the limited overhead storage space on board.

To avoid any mishaps, it’s important to check the weight limits of the airline and if carry on luggage is not enough, buy extra.

Tip – Consider how much it is to upgrade to business class vs paying for the extra luggage! It is your wedding afterall so you deserve to travel in style!

Make sure to pack efficiently, opting for a garment bag that is compact enough to be stowed easily. Consider materials that add extra protection to your dress, like foam padding or acid-free tissue paper.

But it’s not just about stowing your dress in the closet. You may also require access to a steamer upon arrival, especially if your dress is made from delicate fabric. So, make sure to ask your hotel in advance or pack your own travel steamer .

With a little bit of preparation, you can keep your dress safe and wrinkle-free on its journey to your dream destination.

Airline Baggage Policies

For the common airlines, we looked into their most up-to-date policies and what you should expect when traveling with your wedding dress.

Your bridal party or a wedding guest may be able to help you with this by pooling luggage. My parents, sister and her partner gave me some of their allowance/carried a bag for me.

Delta Airlines

Allows one free checked bag for economy class passengers and two free checked bags for first class and business class passengers.

The maximum size for a checked bag is 62 inches (158 cm) in total dimensions. The maximum weight for a checked bag is 50 pounds (23 kg). For a wedding dress, Delta Air Lines recommends that you pack it in a garment bag and check it as a regular bag.

Southwest Airlines

Allows two free checked bags for all passengers. The maximum size for a checked bag is 62 inches (158 cm) in total dimensions.

The maximum weight for a checked bag is 50 pounds (23 kg). For a wedding dress, Southwest Airlines recommends that you pack it in a garment bag and check it as a regular bag.

American Airlines

Virgin Atlantic

Overall, Delta, Southwest, American and Virgin Atlantic seem to offer the best options for traveling with a wedding dress, as they allow you to check the dress for free if it won’t fit as a carry-on.

3. Work out how you are going to protect your dress in transit

As much as we’d like air travel to be effortless, the reality is that your wedding dress, love it as you might, is just another piece of luggage to the airline.

Fortunately, with some preparation and foresight, you can protect your dress and ensure it arrives at your destination unscathed.

What bag are you going to bring your dress in?

A large case suitcase will provide the most protection for your dress but it will also add the most weight to your luggage.

If you are going to check your dress underneath, you will definitely want a sturdy suitcase to protect the dress in transit.

If you plan on bringing the dress on the plane with you, I think this is less important.

I used a light high quality duffel bag like this one , I put my dress in the garmet bag then I rolled the dress to make it as small as possible. Keep in mind my dress was a big princess dress so it was still pretty huge even rolled.

It was a little crinkly when it arrived but it was nothing a steamer couldn’t fix!

Packing materials to add extra protection

As we have mentioned above, invest in a good quality garment bag that’s designed to protect delicate fabrics. It should have a padded, sturdy construction and be the correct size for your dress.

Stuffing tissue paper in the bodice and sleeves can help prevent creases, scratches, and wrinkles. Consider adding foam padding around the hemline of the dress to ensure that the dress shape and length remain intact while traveling.

4. Ask the flight attendants if they can place your dress in the onboard closet

While you may want to keep your dress with you, placing it in an overhead bin or under your seat can be risky, particularly if you’re headed to a crowded destination.

We did place ours in the overhead compartment and it was totally fine BUT it is even better if the flight attendants can store it for you for better protection.

Ask the flight attendants if they can place your dress in the onboard closet. You can also request them to set a priority tag on your garment bag to ensure it’s one of the first items off the aircraft when you arrive.

wedding-in-the-maldives

5. Should You Ship your Wedding Dress?

Provided you don’t have to pay for extra luggage, traveling on the airplane only costs you the price of the garment bag. Around $50 is easier to budget for than a usual $150-$300 price tag of shipping it straight to your venue. This includes the insurance, and fragile care.

Plus the wracking feeling that you are leaving your wedding dress out of your sight and in the hands of some delivery workers.

If you chose to ship your dress, here are a few quick tips. It’s important to document the condition of your dress before shipping, so take pictures and videos from every angle. Be sure to zip or button up the back of your dress to prevent bunching, but avoid bustling it.

When folding your gown, flip it inside out if it’s a simple design without embellishments. Place acid-free tissue paper between the folds to prevent creasing and snagging.

Finally, protect your gown by placing it in a plastic garment bag or a plastic bag if you don’t have one. Remember to keep all of these steps in mind for liability purposes.

destination wedding

Arriving at Your Destination with a Flawless Dress

Congratulations, you’ve arrived at your destination! The only thing left to do is to ensure that your wedding dress looks perfect for the big day.

First things first, locate a reputable dry cleaner that specializes in wedding dresses in case your dress requires last-minute cleaning or pressing. Don’t forget to check with your hotel; some offer on-site dry cleaning services. Our hotel in Africa did this for us.

To ensure your dress looks perfect, hang it up as soon as you arrive in your hotel room. Make sure the hanger is sturdy enough to support the weight of your dress.

If you aren’t going to use a dry cleaner, steam your dress by asking for an iron and ironing board from the hotel, or bring your travel steamer. If you’re in a rush or don’t want to risk damaging your dress with an iron, consider hanging your dress in the bathroom while you take a hot shower to let the steam do the work.

Finally, place your dress in a location where it won’t be disturbed. Avoid hanging it near windows or air conditioning units that could expose it to sunlight or moisture. Double check that you zip up and secure your garment bag to protect your dress from any unwanted exposure.

Voila! You’ve made it to your destination, and your dress looks as flawless as you do.

What to do in case of damage?

Unfortunately, sometimes, despite our best efforts, dresses can still be damaged during your travels. If you notice any damage once you arrive at your destination, take photos immediately and file a claim with the airline right away.

If the damage is not fixable, immediately locate a nearby reputable dry cleaner or tailor to assess what can be done before the wedding day. Always remember that your dress is replaceable, but the moments, memories, and love shared on your wedding day are irreplaceable.

Handling Dress Emergencies Abroad

When it comes to weddings, anything can happen. It is better to be prepared for the unexpected when it comes to your dress.

Do this by packing an emergency sewing kit that can handle last-minute developments, such as a rip or tear. Consider adding supplies like needles, thread, safety pins, and fabric tape. The venue, hotel, or resort you are staying in, will have an onsite tailor that can fix mini-emergencies for you.

For common dress issues, such as wrinkles or stains, have some quick fixes up your sleeve, like using a travel steamer or spot cleaner. And don’t hesitate to reach out to a local tailor for more significant issues. Navigate any issues with a level head, and enjoy your big day knowing you’re prepared for anything.

It’s Ok to Ask For Help!

When traveling, it is acceptable to request additional assistance. If you feel uneasy about your dress going through the x-ray machine at security, you can ask a TSA agent if there is an alternative way to scan it.

Similarly, if you become anxious during your flight about your dress being stored in the closet, it is perfectly fine to approach a flight attendant and kindly inquire about checking on your stunning wedding gown.

Wedding Dress Travel can be Tough but It’s worth it!

It’s your big day and you want to ensure that your dress is in perfect shape. Preparing for your destination wedding involves some planning to help you travel without any stress and enjoy a flawless event.

Always prepare well before the trip, from selecting the right garment bag to protecting your dress during transit. Additionally, it’s essential to stow your dress securely on-board.

Tips from a Stylist: Steaming a Wedding Dress

Today we are sharing some tips and tricks in response to our frequently asked questions! The world of weddings may be brand new to many of our brides, but we are seasoned pros. We are here to help our brides navigate the unknown waters of all things wedding dresses!

Steaming a Wedding Dress

Before heading down the aisle, you’ll want to make sure your dress is wrinkle-free and aisle-ready by giving her a good steam. If you’re getting married locally, your alterations vendor may steam your gown for you before sending her home with you. If you’re jetting off for a destination wedding, the packages at most resorts will include a dress steaming. Even with the best fresh steam, however, there will typically be one or two tiny wrinkles that will rear their heads before the wedding day. To help combat this, we always recommend having a travel steamer on hand to help get the gown in tip-top shape! Because travel steamers can leak on occasion, we recommend steaming through a white washcloth. This will prevent any water spots on your gown! Starting on the front of the gown, you’ll want to pull the steamer down from top to bottom from the inside of the gown. Keeping the steamer underneath the dress layers allows excess steam to be trapped in the layers, helping it to release more wrinkles in the drying process. Once you’ve finished the front of the gown, turn it around to catch the back- doing it in this order will prevent the train from being crumpled up as it’s drying. Leave the gown to hang as high up as possible as it dries, releasing any additional wrinkles left on the gown. After that, she’ll be fresh, wrinkle-free, and ready to walk down the aisle!

Takeaway Tips:

  • Check with your seamstress/planner/venue to see if they offer a steaming package. That’s always the easiest option.
  • Steam with a white washcloth or sheet over the steamer head to prevent water spots.
  • Always steam from the INSIDE/UNDERSIDE of the gown, top to bottom, front to back.
  • Let the gown hang as high/long as possible to allow it to dry without causing additional wrinkles.

How to Travel with a Wedding Dress, According to the Experts

By Erika Owen

Traveling with your dress (or suit) probably doesn’t make many people’s “Things That Are Really Stressing Me Out” list at the beginning of planning a destination wedding. But wait until 24 hours before you leave for the airport and it’ll sink in. Do you have the right garment bag? Where is that steamer you bought three years ago during that Nordstrom sale? Carry-on or checked bag? Unfortunately, no amount of Googling will give you the peace of mind you need—there just isn’t much information out there tackling airline restrictions and guidelines around traveling with important outfits.

Ahead, Íris Anna Groeneweg, the manager of onboard services and procurement at Icelandair , and Birna Bjornsdottir, an event planner and co-owner of Pink Iceland based in Reykjavik, weigh in with their tips for making your flight (and outfits) as smooth as possible.

“A couple arrived this morning without their checked luggage. But they had everything they needed for the wedding (happening the day after they arrived) and will have the delayed luggage delivered to their Airbnb .” Groeneweg agrees: “We recommend that passengers take important items as carry-on luggage, as check-in luggage can never be 100 percent guaranteed.”

Don’t just throw your stuff into your carry-on—bring some strategy to the task. Bjornsdottir suggests organizing all of the items into small bags and laying them out the night before to avoid any day-of anxiety.

The best way to make sure your clothing doesn’t fall prey to another traveler’s spilled coffee, or get run over by a rampant suitcase, is to pack it in a garment bag .

If you bought something off the rack, there are a few reliable elements of a good garment bag: water-resistant material, zipper access, and a built-in hanger (or space to use a hanger). If it has a few pockets, even better. Consider how large your outfit is; the space will fill up quickly when you’ve got a dress packed with tulle. If the latter is what you’re working with, opt for something like the Simply Essential Dress Storage Bag from Bed Bath & Beyond. Not only is it great for security thanks to its see-through design, but you’ll be able to keep an eye on it to ensure the dress isn’t bunching up. If you have a smaller dress with a fabric that can be rolled or folded, consider something more compact like this convertible garment bag from Modoker that doubles as a duffel and has a convenient shoulder strap.

Some suitcase brands even have garment bags made specifically for their own designs, like Away; those who own the Bigger Carry-On have the option to add a centerfold garment sleeve . An option like this is best for outfits that have already been pressed or can be folded, as you will only have so much room to work with.

Contact the airline prior to travel

Don’t wait until you’re at the airport to let the airline know you’re traveling with precious (fashion) cargo. “For example, Icelandair would contact the crew and inform them about passengers traveling with garment bags. Speak to the employee at the check-in desk when arriving at the airport to get confirmation prior to going through security.”

How to Pack Light When You're Only Traveling With a Carry-On

Karthika Gupta

Like with any travel plan, make sure to flag any prior communication around extra carry-on allowances in your email inbox so it’s easy to reference when checking your bags.

Make sure you’ll have access to a steamer at your destination

It may sound like a given, but it’s easy to leave off of the packing list when you’re preparing for such a big trip. “I can’t tell you how many steamers Pink Iceland has had over the years. We feel it’s an essential thing for a wedding planner to have as not all accommodations have steamers—in some cases you cannot iron the outfit,” says Bjornsdottir. “If you’re having a destination wedding and don’t have a local on the ground, I would recommend a powerful travel steamer, or check with the place you are staying the night before your wedding to see if they have one.” But that’s not all: avoid last-minute scrambles by checking the voltage and type of plug before you leave. The last thing you want is to give away precious suitcase space to a tool you can't even use.

If you plan on bringing your own steamer, find something with a bit of power. Black+Decker’s Handheld Garment Steamer is a great option.

“But at Icelandair, we only have these in half of the fleet—specifically not in our 737s.” But all is not lost—and definitely don’t lose your cool if it’s not available to you. There’s always an alternative. “If they are flying on a 737, a crew member will help place the dress in the overhead compartment,” Groeneweg continues. Yet another reason to board early because that space is full.

Don’t let the excitement of finding the perfect outfit be shadowed by a long-haul flight. Take these tips for traveling with a wedding dress, integrate them into your planning, and make sure and be extra-nice to the flight attendant helping you store your garment bag.

The RSVPs are in, flights and accommodations are booked, but what about your outfit? We’re approaching peak wedding season — which typically spans from late spring to early fall — and if you’re stumped on finding the perfect spring wedding guest dress that’ll keep you comfortable and looking great while fitting the theme of the occasion, you’ll absolutely want to keep reading.

I love weddings. Between the food, dancing, and celebration of love, they're among my favorite events. And while I might be an anomaly, I’m not afraid to admit that I even love the preparation that goes into such an occasion. Finding the perfect dress, shoes, and accessories feels like my niche superpower, and as your resident shopping expert (and someone who will be attending five weddings this year), I’ve curated a list of some of the most stylish dresses on the market right now that are fit for any and all occasions.

From splurge-worthy pieces to stunning budget-friendly dresses , this is your complete guide for finding the best wedding guest dress. I've also outlined some of the most comfortable shoes to dance all night in and the important accessories that you won’t want to travel without.

Anthropologie

If you have a wedding on the calendar with a formal or black-tie dress code, don’t fret; take this as an opportunity to pull out all the stops with a striking dress that’ll turn heads (but not so much as to overshadow the bride). In terms of formal weddings, it’s hard to be overdressed as the theme practically asks for it. Think: satin, maxi dresses, dramatic necklines, or something with a tailcoat. If you don’t know where to start, Anthropologie is a one-stop shop for all of your formal wedding guest dress needs (and most styles are even up to 50 percent off). Check out the Bhldn Piper V-Neck Gown on sale starting at just $43 thanks to a rare double discount.

And if you’ve already spent so much on the flight and hotel and are looking for a wallet-friendlier option, Amazon happens to have a ton of under-$50 formal wedding guest dresses like the PrettyGarden Women's One-Shoulder Dress , which comes in 15 different hues and is on sale today for just $41.

Abercrombie & Fitch

A scenic wedding requires a fabulous dress to match (and one that can withstand plenty of sand). Such occasions lend itself well to lots of color and flowy skirts — anything breezy and beautiful . Consider this wrinkle-resistant, halter-styled Bhldn Lola Sleeveless Chiffon Midi Dress that's a kaleidoscope of color and will stun at a wedding, but is still super wearable for an array of other events.

Or if you want something with a bit more dazzle, the Abercrombie Ruffle Tiered Gown features a dramatic ruffled skirt and floral print that makes it a flattering crowd pleaser. Speaking of florals, consider shopping the Styleworld Women's Elegant Floral Dress or Tsher Women's Sleeveless Satin Midi Dress , which are each under $50. I also love this Btfbm Women's Drawstring Shoulder Dress from Amazon that has a pleated design and drawstring waist to make it extra flattering and dressy while remaining on theme.

  • Bhldn Lola Sleeveless Chiffon Midi Dress , $248
  • Abercrombie Ruffle Tiered Gown , $120 (originally $150)

  • Achanti Pleated Maxi Dress , $99
  • Deep Self Women's Maxi Dress , $46
  • Prettygarden Women’s Wrap Ruffled Midi Dress , $52

The difference between cocktail and formal dress codes can be a bit confusing to get a grasp of; think of cocktail events as a more laidback event with lots of dancing, drinks, and looser rules. This ambiguity can make it hard to make a choice on what exactly to wear, but you’re in luck because I’ve outlined a few of my favorite styles on the internet right now — starting with the Zesica Women's Sleeveless Chiffon Dress ; it has a tiered design that begs to be on the dance floor all night long. Formal-leaning dresses with a midi length are also great for cocktail parties, like the Ihot Women's V-Neck Midi Dress and PrettyGarden Women's One-Shoulder Ruched Midi Dress from Amazon. Or, you can channel your inner goddess with the Never Fully Dressed Gold Plisse Luna Dress at your next celebration.

Anthropologie excels in this department as well, as I’m between the Bhldn Isla Strapless Stretch Satin Midi Dress and Bhldn Isla Strapless Stretch Satin Midi Dress for a cocktail-themed wedding I'm attending this summer.

  • Bhldn Isla Strapless Stretch Satin Midi Dress , $198
  • Never Fully Dressed Gold Plisse Luna Dress , $145
  • Bhldn Simone Printed Halter Midi Dress , $248
  • Zesica Women's Sleeveless Chiffon Dress , $56

  • Cupshe Women's Satin Cocktail Dress , $30 (originally $40)
  • Dress The Population Nicole Sweetheart Neck Cocktail , $148
  • Bebe Smocked Georgette Cocktail Dress , $129
  • Kirundo Women's Satin Midi Dress , $51 with on-site coupon (originally $60)

Jumpsuits have undoubtedly gained plenty of popularity over the past decade for their ability to strike the perfect balance of comfort and style , so it’s no surprise that they’re gaining momentum on the wedding scene as well. I went to a wedding a few weeks ago and the jealousy I felt when I saw fellow guests busting a move on the dance floor in incredibly fashionable (and stretchy) jumpsuits made me consider shopping for one for my next event.

I’m personally eyeing the Abercrombie Giselle Pleated Jumpsuit , especially while it's discounted by nearly $30 right now, or the Anrabess Women's One-Shoulder Jumpsuit that’s made with an ultra-soft polyester-spandex material that’ll move with you (and barely take up any space in your suitcase). They can be dressed up with a put-together updo and heels or down with a lovely pair of wedges. If you’ve never considered wearing a jumpsuit to a wedding, take this as your opportunity to start.

  • Abercrombie Giselle Pleated Jumpsuit , $112 (originally $140)
  • Anrabess Women's One-Shoulder Jumpsuit , $48
  • Julia Jordan Halter Neck Jumpsuit , $98 (originally $139)
  • Adrianna Papell One-Shoulder Jumpsuit in Watermelon Bliss , $140 (originally $199)
  • Blencot Women’s Sleeveless Jumpsuit , $47
  • Red Dot Boutique Asymmetrical Wide-Leg Jumpsuit , $48
  • Verwin Women’s Overlay Embellished Jumpsuit , $52
  • Mac Duggal Ruched Wide-Leg Jumpsuit , $338
  • Knitee Women's Ruffled Jumpsuit , $44 (originally $58)
  • Ekaliy Women's Halter Neck Jumpsuit , $40

The dress that you choose for the occasion is only half of the battle, you'll also need a great pair of shoes that’ll not only compliment your look, but also keep you comfortable — even on a day spent standing. I wore the viral Vivaia Square Toe Chunky Heels to a wedding a few weeks ago and was beyond pleasantly surprised at how well they cushioned my feet after hours of dancing. As for splurge-worthy pairs that’ll last you for years to come, the Scarlett Chase 75 Pumps are another one of my recent finds, and I was blown away by their sleek look and support.

Below, you'll also find the stellar Dream Pairs Women's Open Toe Espadrilles Wedges that’ll compliment any outdoor wedding, and even a pair of the compact Rolly Flats that you can throw in your clutch and change into after the ceremony (and the photos are taken) for comfy bliss for the rest of the night.

  • Vivaia Square Toe Chunky Heels , $139
  • Top Moda Women's Gallery Heels , $20
  • Dream Pairs Women's Open Toe Espadrilles Wedges , $29 (originally $43)
  • Cushionaire Women's Memory Foam Heels , $40 (originally $65)
  • Inez Mia Black Suede Heels , $258
  • Scarlettchase 75 Pumps , $445
  • Rolly Flats , $17

Cushionaire Women's Memory Foam Heels

Packing lists vary from trip to trip, but for a wedding, you’ll need a few more items to make the entire evening a breeze . Got a stain on your dress? That's nothing a Tide To-Go Pen can’t help you with. A few wrinkles? No problem, you've got the HiLife Portable Steam Cleaner packed in your suitcase already. If you want to avoid wrinkles entirely, though, consider snagging this on-sale Marmins Dress Bag to keep your dress smooth and protected from travel-induced spills and tears before your event.

As for accessories to make the day itself easier, I never attend any wedding without a good sticky bra and personally love the Nsolex Reusable Sticky Bra Set for backless dresses, and the high-quality Tita Circle Nipple Covers when I’m wearing something low cut. And to make an uncomfortable pair of heels comfortable, you should consider adding the Dr. Scholl's Comfort Cushions or Mate Fix Heel Cushions to your cart — especially while they’re both on sale.

  • Tide To-Go Pen , $3 (originally $5)
  • Hilife Portable Steam Cleaner , $30 (originally $40)
  • Marmins Dress Bag , $16 (originally $20)
  • Nsolex Reusable Sticky Bra Set , $15 (originally $23)
  • Tita Circle Nipple Covers , $24
  • Dr. Scholl's Comfort Cushions , $7 (originally $9)
  • Matie Fix Heel Cushions , $10 (originally $13)

DashDividers_1_500x100

Black Tie Wedding Guest Dresses

For a black tie wedding , you’ll want to stick to a formal dress code (meaning: floor-length gowns). But your look can be much more playful than a typical black dress, and Rent the Runway has plenty of appropriate styles in spring-ready colorways and fabrics.

Choose between satin body-skimming silhouettes, formal pleated styles, and strapless tulle gowns if you want to be one of the best-dressed guests. Or keep it chic and classic with a black ruched dress (which may be versatile enough to convince you to buy it in the end).

Cocktail Wedding Guest Dresses

Cocktail attire broadens your horizons a bit more, allowing you to explore more silhouettes and lengths. We’re gravitating toward the flowy midi dresses and maxi dresses with halter and one-shoulder necklines. You could even explore prints, from traditional florals to unique celestial patterns.

Garden Party Wedding Guest Dresses

Warmer weather means more outdoor celebrations. For country club, vineyard, and garden weddings, breezy dresses with flowy, tiered silhouettes and lightweight fabrics are great options. And of course, floral dresses are a sweet nod to match your surroundings. But beyond floral prints , you can also opt for petal-inspired puff sleeves or rosette appliques .

Destination & Beach Wedding Guest Dresses

Whether you’re traveling to Hawaii, Mexico, or Cape Cod, your upcoming destination wedding deserves a dress that’s just as breezy and carefree. For seaside nuptials, opt for dramatic (but flowy) gowns, sleek midi dresses in vibrant hues or tropical flower prints, and lightweight maxi styles.

Casual Wedding Guest Dresses

Casual weddings in backyards, barns, breweries, and courthouses — or the events leading up to the big day (rehearsal dinner, etc.) — call for relaxed dresses, leg-baring minis, and one-and-done jumpsuits . And don’t think casual equates to boring — you can steal the spotlight by stepping out in something standout, like a sequin dress.

Mango Cut-Out Striped Dress

If florals for spring aren’t your thing, but you still want to wear a print that fits the seasonal dress code, this cut-out dress from Mango is one of our favorite alternatives. It's easy to dress up for a wedding reception but the effortless vibe makes it suitable for casual events, too. You could even repeat the look with a pair of sneakers and a baseball hat for a laidback yet cute brunch outfit.

It’s a piece you can wear on its own with a flat sandal or a pair of comfortable heels . If you want something a bit more modest that will take you from the ceremony to the reception, add a cropped cardigan or shawl to the look.

Reformation jamen knit dress.

Reformation

The Reformation Jamen Knit Dress is probably one of the most comfortable dresses on our list. It’s constructed from a knit material and designed to hug the body in a comfortable and supportive manner. We love it in classic black, but the dress also comes in a shimmering metallic tone that feels oh-so-chic for spring.

Size Range: XS-XL | Colors: 2 | Material: Deadstock polyester, spandex

Astr The Label V-Neck Pleated Midi Dress

Astr The Label

This gorgeous dress from Astr The Label is one of our favorite floral options for spring weddings because its printed detail looks like a watercolor painting. The midi dress has a V-neckline that creates the illusion of capped sleeves for some slight shoulder coverage, too.

Mango Asymmetric Bow Dress

For an asymmetrical one-shoulder gown, opt for this gorgeous Barbie pink dress from Mango. Constructed from flowing viscose material, the dress features a simple, floor-length silhouette with a draped bodice and tie detail on the right shoulder.

Size Range: 0-12 | Colors: 1 | Material: Viscose

Ieena For Mac Duggal Rhinestone Embellished V-Neck Gown With Low Back

Go for a touch of sparkle with this showstopper from T.J. Maxx. The lime green dress has an early 2000s feel to it with its slip-style silhouette, high slit, and, of course, bejeweled details. We love it because, despite all the detailing, it doesn’t feel too busy. Style it with strappy silver heels and hoops, like these earrings from Nordstrom .

Size Range: 6-14 | Colors: 1 | Material: Polyester

Astr The Label Caspia Halter Midi Dress

Kelly green is a gorgeous color for spring, especially in a wedding guest dress like this one. Featuring a subtle jacquard print and mock neckline with an asymmetrical ruffle hem detail, it's a good cross between a cocktail and party dress.

Spring Wedding Guest Dresses Under $300

Marchesa notte sleeveless embroidered dress.

This timeless v-neckline gown features a sheer overlay skirt decorated with floral embroidery and adorned with appliqué straps, making it a great match for the season — especially if you're headed to a garden party wedding.

Farm Rio Floral Satin Maxi Dress

Farm Rio is one of our go-to brands for a pop of color on a fun print. Albeit one of the brand’s more subtle choices, we love this maxi for weddings. And it’s one of those dresses that doesn’t scream “wedding guest dress,” so you can toss it in your suitcase for a tropical vacation or repurpose it for a formal work event — win, win!

Size Range: 2XS-XL | Colors: 1 | Material: Viscose

Reformation Nadira Dress

Reformation

We can always count on Reformation to create the best floral sundresses — and make them dressy enough for wedding receptions. The Narira Dress is one of our favorites for the season thanks to its corset-inspired bodice, sweet straps with bow detailing, and colorful floral prints.

Hutch Strapless 3D Floral Maxi Dress

If you love florals for spring but don’t want to go with a print, this strapless maxi from Hutch is a fun way to dress for the season. Size Range: 2XS-3XL | Colors: 1 | Material: Cotton, polyester, elastane

Reformation Frankie Silk Dress

For a slip dress option in 100 percent silk (a.k.a. something that's temperature regulating), consider the Reformation Frankie dress. The tube silhouette with itty bitty spaghetti straps gives it a more Y2K-inspired look. It also features a much-appreciated high slit on the back of the skirt for better mobility (and the ability to dance the night away).

Size Range: 0-12, 14-24 ( extended sizes ) | Colors: 2 | Material: Silk

Best Spring Wedding Guest Dresses Over $300

Ted baker london slanno floral asymmetric hem midi dress.

This floral Ted Baker dress features a fresh take on florals, with a print that looks so realistic that it’s almost as if the dress is made up entirely of pressed blooms. We also love the way the silky garment drapes across the body in an asymmetrical silhouette. The cap sleeves and high neckline offer excellent coverage for a more modest dress code.

Size Range: 0-6 | Colors: 1 | Material: Polyester

Mango Gathered Dress With Sweetheart Neckline

For a dress with even more ruched detailing, we also love this dress from Mango. Constructed from a viscose and polyester blend, this strapless tube dress features all-over ruching for added texture and interest in a gorgeous blue variegated print.

Size Range: 2-8 | Colors: 1 | Material: Viscose, polyester

Solace London Jodi Strapless Crepe and Satin-Twill Gown

Net-a-Porter

If you’re invited to a black tie wedding this spring, this Solace gown is guaranteed to turn heads (but won't draw more attention than the bride, of course!). The strapless gown has a tube silhouette with a dramatic train, providing an hourglass effect.

Size Range: 4-16 | Colors: 3 | Material: Polyester

What to Know When Buying Spring Wedding Guest Dresses

Before you shop, Lieberman says it’s always worth thinking about the wedding dress code, especially if the ceremony takes place in a house of worship that might require more conservative attire. If the dress code is more relaxed or a little vague, she recommends thinking about the venue, weather forecast, and timeline of events so that you can choose an option that you’ll feel comfortable in from the wedding march to the final dance.

Lieberman suggests looking for dresses with more flexible silhouettes that you can actually dance in. “There is nothing more frustrating than trying to dance but worrying about a wardrobe malfunction,” she notes. If you’re going for a more form-fitting look, consider dresses that have a little bit of stretch to them or styles with a generous slit, such as the Reformation Frankie Silk Dress , to ensure you can still walk, move, and groove comfortably.

Cost Per Wear

You may want to choose something versatile that you can get more than one wear out of — and factoring in the cost per wear, especially for a dress that’s more expensive. “Find a dress you can style in different ways so you can reinvent it for another wedding or event with excitement,” says Lieberman.

She notes that shopping more sustainably means looking at garments that have more than one purpose, whether that’s multiple weddings, other formal events, or vacations.
