Located on the banks of the legendary Ganges River, this holy city appears with splendid, mysterious beauty but also very peaceful and friendly. This is also the place where you can learn more about the origins of thousands of years of culture in this incredible country of India.

Vārāṇasī, also known as Benares, Banaras, or Benaras, or Kashi or Kasi, is a sacred city and center for thousands of years of Hinduism located on the banks of the Ganges River in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

travel varanasi by air

The ancient city of Varanasi is always the boldest and most impressive feature, because that ancient city is compared to more ancient than history, where the cremation fire by the sacred Ganges River from more than 3,500 years ago has not been extinguished, where the rituals of Hindus has been taking place regularly every day for thousands of years and has not changed. The new day in the ancient city begins with the ceremony to welcome the sun god (Surya) rising on the east bank of the Ganges River, and ends with the ceremony of worshiping the fire god (Aarti) at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

And take a boat ride on the Ganges River to learn about the rituals, customs, culture… of the  Indians or just to watch the sunrise here… will also be a memorable thing for you when visiting India!

It is no coincidence that Varanasi is described as the “the India of your imagination”. Everyone wears traditional clothes, orange and yellow everywhere. People go to the river to pray at any hour of the day. They have bathed in gurgling streams for many years as a way of purifying their bodies.

Overview of Varanasi (#varanasi travel blog)

Varanasi is a city in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh dating back to the 11th century B.C. Considered the spiritual capital of India, the city attracts Hindu pilgrims who bathe in the sacred waters of the Ganges River and perform funeral rites. Along the city’s winding streets are some 2,000 temples, including Kashi Vishwanath, the “Golden Temple” dedicated to the Hindu god of Shiva.

The city of Varanasi is one of the holiest sites of the Hindu faith, where locals believe that souls will be sent straight to heaven, to the abode of the gods. Some of the hotels here exist only to accommodate elderly people awaiting impending death.

The city of Varanasi (ancient name Benares, Banares, Kashi) is located on the banks of India’s most sacred river – the Ganges. This great ancient city is known by many names such as “City of Academics”, “City of Philosophers”, “City of Light”. Varanasi is also one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world.

In the Hindu mind, going to Varanasi is a blessing, but being cremated by the river in this city is truly a great grace. As for Buddhists, Varanasi is a must-visit place at least once in a lifetime, because it also houses the relic of Sarnath (Deer Park), where the Buddha gave his first sermon.

travel varanasi by air

Along with Haridwar, Varanasi is one of the holiest cities for Hindus. The place where every Hindu wants to at least once bathe in the sacred Ganges River here. And when they die, their wish in life is to be cremated and scatter their ashes into the Ganges from here. If you are not a Hindu, Varanasi is well worth a visit because it is the oldest city that has been inhabited for more than 5000 years. And Varanasi is also a sacred land of Buddhists, is one of The Four Holy Places of Buddhism with Sarnath Deer Park where Shakyamuni Buddha gave his first sermon after attaining enlightenment.

If New Delhi is easily annoyed by the noise, hustle and bustle, mixed with dust, are the uncertainties of life in scammers, from tricycle, taxi, ticket, trains, hotels… always make you feel insecure in a foreign country. Arga overwhelmed people with the symbol of love and romance Taj Mahal, when coming to Varanasi, the “life” feature of a prosperous royal citadel in the past, it is still enough to find in it many strange features from street food with the famous Naan bread – a daily dish of Indians, to the crispy Samosa pillow cake with delicious curry flavor, a cup of fermented goat’s milk (Lassi)… delectable and surprisingly cheap.

travel varanasi by air

It is said that, coming to Varanasi there are two types of people: either to enjoy life, or to wait for death. Unlike other tourist places in India, here there is a breath of religion, belief and atmosphere that really makes a difference. People come here to die, but this is not a city of the dead, there are thousands of stories being told every day, through every street corner, every smoke of prayer.

travel varanasi by air

Many tourists don’t come here to shop, they come to see what a real funeral is like. Cremation and all stages are public. Unlike other cultures, death here is not a taboo, gods, demons, etc. are always stories mentioned with unending passion.

Varanasi is located about 1 hour by flight from the capital New Delhi or if you want to take the train it will take about 10 hours. You can easily reach Varanasi in several ways:

Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport (also known as Babatpur Airport or Varanasi Airport) is 18 km northwest of the city center. Domestic airlines such as Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, Jet Airways and Vistara connect Varanasi with other cities in India. In 2005, the airport was recognized for international standards and served routes to Sharjah, Kathmandu, Colombo, Bangkok. Air India Express, Buddha Air, SriLankan Airlines, Thai Airways, and Thai AirAsia are the international airlines operating at the airport. Getting around Varanasi

travel varanasi by air

In Varanasi, there is no subway (metro), buses are also limited, so the popular means of transportation is auto rickshaw. Definitely you need to bargain. The price is about 15 rupees/km. You should check the distance between the origin and destination in advance to calculate the appropriate price. If you go many points during the day, you can completely negotiate a full-day package price and only pay after the end of the day.

When exploring the old town of Varanasi, you should walk to see more clearly the cultural colors. A little tip if you get lost in the small winding alleys here: all roads lead to the Ganges!

travel varanasi by air

In addition, sailing on the Ganges at dawn or dusk is also an experience worth trying. If you want to go in the morning, you must book the night before. Price is about 150 rupees/small boat 4 people/hour.

Where to stay? (#varanasi blog)

You should choose a hotel in the Assi Ghat area, one of the cleanest ghats in Varanasi. From Assi Ghat, it is also very convenient to walk to other ghats.

Our group stayed at Stay Inn Hostel ( Agoda , Booking ), Address: B 1/128 c – 5 Plot no. 5 Dumrao Bagh Colony Assi, Varanasi. The price is about $3/person in the dorm room. The hostel is 400 meters from Assi Ghat, close to the main road, restaurants and markets so it is very convenient. You can borrow the hotel’s kitchen to cook. The dorm room is cool and clean, however, there is only a ceiling fan without air conditioning and there are many mosquitoes at night.

travel varanasi by air

If you require higher room quality, you can refer to Rahul Guesthouse ( Agoda , Booking ), price $15/room for 2 people/night, $45/room for 3 people/night. Address: N1/15-D10 Gangotri Vihar, Nagwa, Lanka, Varanasi.

Room rates are higher than the average in India, so the quality is also better. The bedroom is spacious, clean and has air conditioning. The bathroom is clean and very spacious, even with a ceiling fan inside. There is a restaurant on the rooftop with room service.

travel varanasi by air

The biggest downside is the location. Actually, it’s not too far from the hotel to the ghats (stepped water wharf) (more than 15 minutes on foot), but the road leading there is littered with garbage, waste, and all kinds of junk, which is horrible. If you want to catch a rickshaw, you have to walk about 5 minutes to the main road, but there is no rickshaw in front of the door like other places. In addition, wifi is only available in the rooftop restaurant, other areas of the house are not available, however, the wifi speed is very slow.

Located on the south side of the Ganges River, Assi Ghat is one of the ghats chosen by many tourists to explore and participate in attractive festivals in Varanasi. This is also the residence of a large number of students, researchers, tourists in the city to study at Barana Hindu University and some other famous institutions.

When coming to Assi Ghat, you will admire the temple of Sankat Mochan Hanuman or pray at a sacred Shiva Linga placed under a peepal tree. You can also take a scenic boat ride around or hop on a hot air balloon to enjoy the stunning views of Assi Ghat from above, indulge in art shows in the evening, and enjoy delicious home-cooked meals. shops or cafes in the area near this ghat.

This is a sacred ghat dedicated to Lord Shiva, the god who created Varanasi. Temples at this and other places in Varanasi often take the form of Mount Kailash or Meru Parvat in the Himalayas, the birthplace of Lord Shiva.

Dashashwamedh Ghat (Main Ghat)

  • Location: About 2.2 km from Assi Ghat, next to Kashi Viswanath Temple.

travel varanasi by air

One of the most famous and oldest Ghats in Varanasi is the Dashashwamedh Ghat. This is also the place associated with 2 interesting Hindu legends about the formation of this ghat. First, Dashashwamedh Ghat was created by Lord Brahma to welcome Lord Shiva. Another legend holds that Lord Brahma sacrificed 10 horses during the performance of Dasa Ashwamedha yajna.

Dashashwamedh means “God Brahma sacrificed 10 horses here”. This is the ghat located in the center and also the busiest one. You will witness a world where all the opposites come together: fun, colorful, whirling, chaotic, divine, mundane. The living go hand in hand with the dead. Cows, goats, and dogs roam the streets of the market, jostling with people. From luxurious regal to low-class, beggars, pickpockets, thieves. From prayerful devotees to false ascetics, deceiving pilgrims. From flamboyant brocade to ascetic, naked, messy hair, a life without combing or cutting.

At 7pm every day, it celebrates Ganga aarti, which pays homage and gratitude to the goddess Ganges (Hindu’s Mother River). Five altars were established with five young priests as their representatives, the ritual began with a resounding chant, then, five priests used horns and urged them in long stanzas. Thousands of people crammed together at the riverbank to pray respectfully, the ceremony was ended with lanterns lighting candles, attaching flowers to a section of the Ganges.

Ganga Aarti is a ritual performed by some priests carrying Deepams, lamps and moving rhythmically to the tune of bhajans dedicated to the goddess Ganga. These rituals are conducted twice a day at dusk and dawn. Especially in the evening, devotees drop lanterns on the water, creating a shimmering, fanciful scene that is unmatched.

Manikarnika Ghat (Burning Ghat)

  • Location: About 2.7 km from Assi Ghat, between Dashashwamedh Ghat and Scindia Ghat.

Manikarnika Ghat is the oldest and holiest ghat in Varanasi. According to legend, when Raja Daksh Prajapati, a son of Brahma, insulted Shiva, goddess Mata Sati set herself on fire in protest. Taking pity on Sati, Shiva took her burned body back to the Himalayas. Unfortunately, on the way, body parts fell to earth. At the places where her body fell, Shiva established temples called Shakti Peeth. There are 51 Shakti Peeth corresponding to 51 Sanskrit letters. Manikarnika Ghat is where Sati’s earring fell (in Sanskrit, Manikarnika means “earring”).

travel varanasi by air

This is a place that you should not miss when you want to discover the unique customs of India. Manikarnika Ghat is one of the oldest and most sacred ghats in the city of Varanasi. Most cremation rites in Varanasi are conducted at this ghat. Visitors can watch the cremation rites with guides or take a boat ride from afar. However, they will not be allowed to use cameras and must show respect for the ceremony.

At this Manikarnika ghat there is a well of the same name, which is said to have been dug by the god Vishnu for Shiva and his wife Parvati to bathe in order to hope that Shiva would “lower fire” and not destroy the earth. Between the well and the ghat is a Charanpaduka stone pedestal bearing the footprints of Vishnu.

travel varanasi by air

Visiting Manikarnika Ghat, you can also witness the cremation ceremony of the Indians. Hindus believe that being incarnated in the fire and returning to the mother river will help wash away all sins, free the soul from the body, and bring them to nirvana.

For more than 2,000 years, the fire that burned bodies at Manikarnika Ghat has never cooled down. It is estimated that every day 200 bodies are burned and the ashes are scattered into the sacred river. Poor families who could not afford the cremation had to simply wrap the dead body, and so let it be released into the river. In addition, children, saints, pregnant women, and people bitten by cobras are not allowed to be cremated, but only tied to rocks and drowned in the river.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple (Golden Temple)

  • Location: Located on the west bank of the Ganges River, Vishwanath Gali is the easiest way to reach the temple.
  • Opening hours: 3PM to 11PM on weekdays.

One of the most famous Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. The word “Kashi” in the name of the temple is the old name of the city of Varanasi. The temple has been destroyed and restored many times in its history. In 1669, Aurangzeb, the sixth Mughal emperor, demolished the temple and built the Gyanvapi Mosque instead. In 1780, Ahliyabai Holkar restored the temple at a nearby location.

This is one of the holiest and most famous temples in Varanasi. This temple is located on the west bank of the Ganges and is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, the holiest place of the Shiva temple. This temple attracts a large number of tourists every year, but they are only viewed from the outside because followers of other religions are not allowed to enter the temple.

The temple currently has eight floors, each with a different theme, paying homage to the gods, warriors and leaders who played an important role in the formation and development of the country. The special thing at the temple is the relief map of India carved in marble depicting the mountains, plains and oceans in extremely precise scale. Holy River Ganga Ceremony

Varanasi is also famous for the Holy River Ganga Ceremony that takes place at dawn and dusk every day over the Ghats. In this Varanasia there are dozens of Ghats – Places where the kings and rich people of centuries ago built for themselves as a way to access and easily pray every day on the sacred river. There are many Holy River Ganga Ceremony taking place every day at the Ghats, but the most famous and the most crowded Hindu devotees are at Dasawamedh Ghat.

travel varanasi by air

I also spent my two evenings in Varanasi watching the ceremony at Dasawamedh Ghat partly perhaps because it was here that I learned and observed most easily the ceremony atmosphere, the spirit of the Hindus and probably also a no small part because the 7 priests were so handsome, more outstanding than the monks in the rest of the Ghats with shaggy beards and big belly typical of Indians.

What and where to eat?

Food in Varanasi is quite cheap: egg rolls: 10 rupees/piece, 15 rupees/two pieces; plain dosa: 10 rupees/piece; masala dosa cake: 15 rupees/piece; ice cream: 5 rupees/stick; lassi: 7 – 15 rupees/cup. However, according to my observations, the food sold along the riverbank is usually more expensive than the food in the main street.

Some useful tips before you go

  • The temperature drops at night and early in the morning, so you need to prepare enough warm clothes.
  • Like other Indian cities, there are frequent power outages in Varanasi. If you go out in the evening, remember to bring a flashlight. It’s dangerous to rummage in the dark here!
  • Every day, many tourists flock to the ghats to pay their respects. Be careful with your belongings in these places.
  • Be wary of people claiming to be volunteers. This is actually just a local person impersonating you, guiding you around to ask for a tip.
  • In the ghats, you can easily see images of strangely dressed Hindu hermits (sadhu). If you want to take pictures with them, you may have to pay, usually 10 rupees. However, a true sadhu never asks for money outright.
  • Absolutely do not take pictures of the cremation scene. Hindus believe that this act disrespects the deceased and hinders them from escaping. If you are caught taking pictures, you may have to pay a lot of money.
  • In Varanasi, especially the old town, there are a lot of monkeys. Therefore, if you eat outside, it will be easy to attract their attention and easily be robbed of food.
  • According to the Hindu beliefs, cows are sacred animals and Indians do not eat beef. In Varanasi, cows roam freely on the street, obstructing traffic. People here, when encountering cows, also avoid to one side, at most, honking beep beep (!!)

Varanasi left me with a lot of feelings about the safe city, although there are still a few scammers, beggars, fake Naga Sadhu… but they are not too troublesome for me. The river is also clean and clear with no trash like previous rumors that I have heard… Along with Amritsar, Varanasi is one of the destinations that left the most impression on me in terms of culture, spirit and Indian people.

  • Auto-rickshaws: Auto-rickshaws, or simply ‘autos,’ are ubiquitous in Varanasi and offer a convenient mode of transport for short distances. Negotiate the fare before starting your journey, and keep in mind that auto-rickshaws are a practical choice for exploring areas such as Ramnagar & Sarnath.
  • Cycle Rickshaws: For a more leisurely and eco-friendly option, opt for a cycle rickshaw. Boat services operate along the river, offering a unique perspective of the ghats and riverside temples. Negotiate prices with boatmen, and consider a sunrise or sunset boat ride for an ethereal view of Varanasi.
  • Walking: Perhaps the most immersive way to experience Varanasi is on foot. The labyrinthine alleys and vibrant markets are best explored at a leisurely pace, allowing you to discover hidden gems, street food delights, and the intricate details of the city’s architecture. Walking is not just a means of getting from one point to another but an invitation to absorb the essence of Varanasi.

Varanasi’s transportation infrastructure seamlessly blends the traditional and the modern, making it accessible to travelers from various corners of the globe. Whether you choose to arrive by train, plane, or bus, the city’s transport hubs are well-equipped to ensure a smooth and memorable journey. The Ultimate Varanasi Travel Guide for Planning a Trip in 2024

' src=

Varanasi, an ancient city in India, is one of the most fascinating places that I have ever visited. This vibrant and lively city receives pilgrims and tourists throughout the year who are looking for different things over here. Some come here to celebrate life while others come to celebrate an important milestone in their life.

Whatever may be the case, you will always find the streets of Varanasi bustling with tourists. There are lots of people taking bath in the sacred River Ganga along the Ghats. This is one vibrant and lively city that anyone who wishes to experience India should visit.

Planning a trip to Varanasi soon? Well, then this Varanasi Travel Guide will help you in doing so! I have shared all the details in this article including where to stay in Varanasi, how to travel within Varanasi, what to eat, shopping guide, and lots more.

Varanasi Travel Guide

About Varanasi

Varanasi is a sacred city in India which could easily be the oldest inhabited city in the world and has a very old history associated with it. According to the texts in Rig Veda, Varanasi was originally called Kashi and was officially renamed to Varanasi in 1956. Kashi translated to ‘to shine’ in English so, Varanasi was known as the City of Lights.

According to Hindu mythology, Varanasi was established by Lord Shiva who was the god of creation and destruction. Since it was the second home to Lord Shiva, there is a Kashi Vishwanath Temple dedicated to him. It is believed that anyone who dies in Varanasi is lucky as he will be liberation from the cycle or reincarnation. That’s not all, a bath in the sacred river Ganga is also said to wash away all your sins.

This is why thousands of elderly come to Varanasi to spend their last days here and priests conduct the final rites for those who died in the city.

Apart from being a prominent site in Hinduism, Varanasi also happens to be a sacred place for Buddhism. Gautam Buddha gave his first sermon about Buddhism around 528 BC and the town of Sarnath, located in Varanasi, is home to temples, stupas, and sites related to Buddhism.

When to Visit Varanasi?

Varanasi is accessible throughout the year but different months are suited for different activities. However, if you wish to just explore the sights in Varanasi, then you can visit Varanasi during the winter season . The weather is cool and pleasant so, sightseeing turns out to be a lot of fun.

Getting There

Located in Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi is around 300 km from Lucknow which is the state capital and 800 km from Delhi which is the national capital. The city is well-connected to the rest of India through roads, railways, and flights.

So, if you are travelling to Varanasi from Delhi or any other city in India, you will have a lot of options available.

How to Travel Within Varanasi

Boats in Varanasi

Once you have reached Varanasi, I am sure you must be wondering how can you travel within Varanasi. Well, since Varanasi is so populated and full of attractions to visit, it is good to know about the main mode of transportation that you will find here.

Here is a brief breakdown of how you can travel in Varanasi.

Personally, I found the best way to explore Varanasi was on foot. If you are covering the streets and Ghats of Varanasi, then this is a great way to do that. It will take you around 1 hour to travel from the northernmost Ghat in Varanasi to the Assi Ghat. Apart from that, the streets are filled with wonderful doors and alleys for photography, so walking is a great way to uncover that as well.

Moreover, you can stop at the food vendors to enjoy the local street food in Varanasi if you are walking and exploring the city.

Rickshaws and Shared E-rickshaws

While walking is a great way to explore Varanasi, you cannot travel to the temples or other places if your hotel is situated a little away from these attractions. In such a case, a rickshaw or an E-rickshaw could be useful. Usually, a rickshaw will cost you around 50 INR for a 3km radius but be prepared to bargain.

There are many shared E-rickshaws that will take you to the ghats and cost you just 10-20 INR for the journey.

Auto-rickshaws

If you are travelling from the railway station or the airport, then auto-rickshaws are the best way to reach your hotel/hostel. You will find lots of auto-rickshaws but you will have to haggle a little for the right price. An auto from Varanasi Junction will cost you around 150-200 INR to Dasaswamedha Ghat.

Ola or Private Taxis

Finally, you also have the option of ordering an Ola cab but remember, the streets of Varanasi are quite narrow so you might not be able to take you car deep inside the city. But it is a great option if you are travelling from the Airport and don’t want to waste your time or energy on haggling the prices with the auto owners or private taxi owners.

Finally, when you are travelling around the Ghats, then one of the best ways to travel from one Ghat to another Ghat is by taking a boat. You can also enjoy a boat ride to cross the river and explore the ashrams and temples that are located on the other side. Usually, a boat ride of one hour will cost you around 50-100 INR per person.

Tips for Traveling in Varanasi

Local lady sitting on Ghat

When you are travelling in Varanasi, you might feel a bit out of place. So, here are a few tips that I have compiled to help you blend in Varanasi and have an enjoyable trip here.

Dress Conservatively in Varanasi

Well, Varanasi is the spiritual capital of India so it is imperative that you wear modest clothing to avoid unwanted attention. You don’t have to wear a suit or saree but you can wear tops and long skirts to keep your shoulders and legs covered at all times.

Beware of the Scams

There are a lot of scams happening daily with tourists in Varanasi so, I would recommend you to be careful here. A few common ones are where locals try to take you to special restaurants or hotels or shops and then take commission for that.

Boat tour guides ask for ridiculous amount at times so you will need to be prepared for haggling. But most importantly, if anyone asks you to buy wood for cremation services, then either say no or be ready to spend a lot because the wood is usually sold to the tourists at a high price to earn profits.

Follow the Rules and Customs

One of the major things to remember when travelling in Varanasi is that the locals have their own customs and rituals here. So, instead of questioning them, respect them and follow them. Sometimes you would be asked to not enter an area with your footwear so, be respectful and remove it before entering.

Be Careful When Taking Photographs

Make sure that you don’t take photos of anyone without permission in Varanasi as it can lead to a lot of trouble. Whether it be a saddhu, a baba, or a local, always be mindful of taking their permission before clicking their snap.

Also, photographs of the cremation area are strictly prohibited so, don’t even attempt it.

Keep Your Belongings Safe

There are a lot of pickpockets in Varanasi so, always keep your bags locked and pay careful attention to them. Leave your valuables in the hotel room and always be aware of your surroundings when exploring the ghats or attending the Ganga Arti.

Stay Safe When Drinking Bhaang

Bhaang is basically edible cannibas which is legal at a few government shops in Varanasi. When you try it out, make sure you are in a safe zone as it can be trippy and can make you hallucinate. Always buy it from a government-authorized shop and always keep trustworthy people around you. If you are travelling solo or unsure about it, then don’t try.

Bargain a Lot

An important thing to remember when travelling in Varanasi is that you will have to haggle almost everywhere. From shopping to transportation, everyone will quote higher price to you in the beginning so, you need to bargain a lot to bring it to the actual price of the product or service.

Watch Out for Bulls

The streets of Varanasi are full of bulls and cows which makes it slightly difficult to navigate the alleyways at times. So, always be careful when you are exploring the streets and don’t end up walking in bull or cow crap as it would be very difficult to get it off.

The Call of Varanasi: Travel Tips to Navigate your First Visit

Varanasi calls many travellers to India, through its ancient mystery, spiritual power and intrigue. But a visit to Varanasi is not always plain sailing – use these Varanasi travel tips to get the best out of your visit to Varanasi.

Why Visit Varanasi?

There is India, and then there’s Varanasi.

Varanasi was my reason for first coming to India. I’d seen it featured in TV documentaries and couldn’t help wonder what it would be like to float along on the waters of the Ganges, the winter mist gently shrouding the ghats, lifting to reveal a city older than time. Little did I imagine how the energy would feel in person.

Even from the screen, the magic and energy of Varanasi was clear and compelling. And I’m not the only one. Countless members of our India Facebook group have spoken of the feeling of being in Varanasi – finding peace and being at one with oneself.

Varanasi is a place that can change how you feel about India, yourself, and even life in general. It’s only fitting that India’s holiest city has a profound impact on almost all that visit.

For Hindus and Jains, a visit to Varanasi (also known as Benares / Banaras) is a right of pilgrimage. Dedicated to the Hindu god, Lord Shiva, Varanasi is the holiest of the Seven Sacred Cities and one of the oldest civilisations on earth. Pilgrims travel here to immerse themselves in the waters of the sacred Ganges or travel here to achieve moksha – liberation from the cycle of death and rebirth in Hinduism.

To visit Varanasi is to take in one of the most powerful places in India – but know that (especially as a first time traveller to India), a visit to Varanasi is not always easy-going on the senses.

Enlightenment, and the death which comes before it is the primary business of Varanasi. – Tahir Shah

Is Varanasi Safe?

The Varanasi entry in the Lonely Planet begins “brace yourself” – and they’re not wrong. Kashi has many nicknames including “city of thieves” and it’s not known for its enlightened attitude towards women (see more in our tips for female travellers below).

Don’t let this put you off the idea of visiting Varanasi: Like other places in India, many people in Varanasi are kind and welcoming, but rather these are things to be aware of ahead of time so you don’t fall victim to scams.

Some of main things to be aware of when planning a visit to Varanasi are:

  • Varanasi is a popular tourism destination. That means that there are many businessmen (and women) who will be all too happy to overcharge you, and scams abound. Haggle hard when in Varanasi and don’t allow yourself to be pressured into buying things you’re not sure about.
  • As a religious city, Varanasi is not the place to party. Alcohol and non-vegetarian food are not allowed here.
  • Despite its religious status, Varanasi is dirty and polluted . Watch where you walk, and if you have sensitive lungs you may want to bring a mask – the air can get very dusty in winter from the burning ghats and general pollution.
  • Do not enter the Ganges due to the extreme levels of water pollution.
  • Varanasi is a conservative place – see my tips for what to wear in Varanasi for female travellers below, and avoid displays of affection in public.
  • I recommend booking your accommodation before arrival in Varanasi and booking a pickup from the airport or train station for your arrival for less hassle and avoid a few scams.

Varanasi is a full on assault on the senses. Expect all the usual sounds and smells of cosmopolitan India, but here they’re dialled up a notch. The Ganges is sadly inky black and polluted, and the narrow streets of ancient Varanasi leading down to the ghats are crowded. If this sounds a bit full on, then I suggest staying outside of the old city, or splurging on an upmarket hotel such as the BrijRama Palace Hotel (you won’t regret it).

The main risks in Varanasi are scams, overcharging and if you’re a female traveller, the usual unwanted attention. If you consider my tips in this Varanasi travel guide, you’ll find that many people in Varanasi are hospitable and welcoming, and it’s truly an unmissable place in India to visit.

When to Travel to Varanasi

The best time of year to travel to Varanasi is in winter, between October and the end of February / early March. Avoid visiting between late March – June when it can get extremely hot, and in July – October when the monsoon falls. Varanasi can get cold during the winter months so remember to bring a shawl or sweater for chilly morning boat trips.

How to Get to Varanasi

Varanasi is well connected to Delhi, Lucknow, Kolkata and Agra, which all have direct trains. Although the fastest trains from New Delhi are the Rajdhani express trains, I suggest avoiding these as they arrive in Varanasi in the small hours of the morning. It’s better to opt for a train that arrives during the day time if you can, or as a last resort make sure you have a pick up pre-arranged and your hotel knows you will be arriving late.

If you’re short on time there are also flights between Delhi and Varanasi.

Once you arrive in Varanasi you’ll need to take a rickshaw from the airport or train station to the old city. Rickshaws cannot enter some of the old city streets, or are prohibited to reduce congestion during the daytime, so you may have to walk a bit if your accommodation is near the ghats. Rickshaw drivers will refuse to use their meters for tourists so haggle and agree on a price before getting in. Short hops should be around 50 Rupees, but you’ll have to insist on it.

(Solo) Female Travel in Varanasi

If you’re travelling as a solo woman in Varanasi, there are a few extra things to consider when planning your trip. There are plenty of women who travel (solo) to Varanasi each year, which makes it possible to meet up with other travellers too, although this is easier to do when staying in budget accommodation.

  • Don’t visit Varanasi as your first or second place in India. Varanasi can be an assault on the senses and can be male-dominated, so it’s best to get some easier going parts of India under your belt first before heading here
  • Varanasi is conservative, so dress conservatively (even more conservatively than other places in India). I suggest: Covering full legs (no shorts, cropped trousers or skirts with slits), no tight clothes, and cover the tops of your arms (no sleeveless tops or spaghetti straps)
  • Wearing a kurta or loose shirt and trousers/jeans are perfect
  • Don’t walk around Varanasi alone at night – it’s best to be back at your hotel by nightfall and eat dinner there
  • If you would rather have company, take a day tour or pre-arrange a boat trip with other travellers via your accommodation
  • Don’t stay in mixed dorms if you are staying in hostels (as these are 99.9% men) – book a private room or an all-female dorm
  • Especially if you’re staying in budget accommodation, make sure your room door locks securely and check for ‘spyholes’

How to Have a Good Varanasi Boat Trip Experience

One of the must-do’s of any visit to Varanasi is taking a boat trip on the river Ganges. There are two best times of day to do this: For sunrise, and in the evening to see the the Ganga aarti that takes place each evening on the Dasaswamedh Ghat from the water.

Both are a beautiful experience, but if you only have time to do one of the two, I would suggest the sunrise one. Boat trips in Varanasi are an essential part of the Varanasi experience, but they can also be high-stress to organise. On my first trip to Varanasi as I strode down the ghats to find our boat, following our guide, I saw swathes of touts making a beeline for me, only to realise I already had a guide and to fan off again.

A Varanasi boat trip is a must do, as it’s from the water that you truly see Varanasi at its most atmospheric and can observe life along the ghats.

Touts in Varanasi know that everyone wants to go on a boat trip and take best advantage of it. If you want to take an early morning boat trip to see the sunrise then I strongly recommend that you organise it the day before: The morning of, boatmen set their prices high knowing that eventually you will be trying to bargain against the rapidly rising sun.

When bargaining, make sure you are clear on whether the price is per person or per boat, and stipulate that you are offering rupees (as opposed to dollars or whatever other currency your captain may later claim). I also suggest asking to see the boat to make sure it is river-worthy.

There is a scam where boat operators will take you to Manikarnika Ghat (the burning ghat) and tell you to get off – where you’ll then be escorted to a deserted building and asked to make a donation to the cremations – your boatman makes a commission on this. If they tell you to get off, a firm ‘no’ should be enough. Note that photos are not allowed of this Ghat out of respect.

If you want a hassle free boat experience, then most hotels offer booking a boat trip directly with them, or you can book a boat trip as part of a day tour/activity with a company such as Get Your Guide.

Final Varanasi Travel Tips

Varanasi may get bad press among travellers for being high hassle, but a visit here is worth it. There’s only one way to tell if Varanasi will find a special place in you, after all.

I suggest wearing covered shoes in Varanasi that you can put in the washing machine or throw once you get home – Varanasi’s alleys are home to as much cow dung as most other places in India combined, and there’s plenty of other dust and dirt on the streets that you don’t want to be stepping in, too.

2 days is enough to catch the key sights of Varanasi, but for a more relaxed experience you could spend 3-4 days here , wandering the ghats, visiting temples and soaking up the atmosphere.

Beware the fake Sadhus . Unfortunately not all of Varanasi’s holy men are the real deal – many are no more than beggars or homeless men dressed up in orange to make money posing for photos from unwitting tourists. If one invites you to take a picture of them, know that a demand for payment may quickly follow.

Don’t take photos of the burning ghats – the Manikarnika ghat . It’s considered disrespectful for those who are cremating their close ones. In the same vein, be sensitive with taking photos of people bathing or mourning close up.

Take a Walk on the Ghats

Varansi Ghat with the small boats and people sitting in the boats.

Once you finish your boat trip, spend some time exploring the ghats. Because this is one of the best ways to experience the magic of Varanasi. A ghat is a series of steps that lead down to a body of water.

While walking on the ghat, you will encounter a fascinating mix of people, from pilgrims and sadhus to boatmen and vendors selling chai, street food, souvenirs, and religious items. You will also see people performing puja, and bathing in the Ganga to cleanse their sins.

You may also hear the sound of conch shells blowing and chants of mantras. Varanasi has 84 ghats, each with its significance. But Dashashwamedh Ghat and Manikarnika Ghat are the most important and oldest ghats.

Dashashwamedh Ghat

Dashashwmedh ghat with the crowd of the people.

Dasaswamedh Ghat is one of Varanasi’s most famous and busiest historical ghats. And it is believed to be one of the oldest ghats in the city.

Probably this is the ghat from where you will start your morning boat ride. The main attraction of the Ghat is the evening Ganga Aarti ceremony, which takes place every day.

Manikarnika Ghat

Manikarnika Ghat Varanasi, people are doing last rituals for their family members.

The Manikarnika Ghat is one of the oldest ghats in Varanasi. And The ghat is also ‘known as the burning ghat’ because pilgrims come here to perform the Hindu cremation ritual.

Visiting the Manikarnika Ghat can be an intense experience. You will see families perform the last rites for their loved ones. It is a deeply spiritual and emotional experience that can leave a lasting impression.

Explore the Narrow Street of Varanasi, And Eat a Delicious Breakfast

Narrow street in Varanasi with full of people. Varanasi Itinerary

When you’ve explored the ghats, make your way to Kachori Gali. You will walk through the oldest part of Varanasi to get to Kachori Gali. And cross some tiny lanes also witness ancient buildings and temples along the way.

Kachori Gali is where you can eat what Varanasi residents eat for breakfast. Varanasi is a foodie’s paradise, so I’ve recommended several must-try street dishes as well as the finest spots to eat them.

Kachori Gali

If you visit Varanasi, you must try Kachori Gali’s famous kachori. Kachori Gali is a small street near Manikarnika Ghat famous for its delicious street food.

The street is lined with small shops, each selling its unique style of kachori. The Ram Bhandar, at the end of the street, is one of Varanasi’s most famous shops for kachori. After trying kachori, you can try lassi at Blue Lassi.

Kashi Vishwanath Temple (Golden Temple)

Kashi Vishwnath Temple of varanasi. One of the best thing to do in 2 days.

If you want to visit only one temple in Varanasi, that should be the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The temple is one of the most respected and ancient temples in India, dedicated to Lord Shiva. As you enter the temple premises, you will feel a sense of peace and tranquillity wash over you.

The temple architecture is breathtaking, with impressive domes, pillars, and spires that reach towards the sky. The temple walls are decorated with beautiful paintings and sculptures. The atmosphere inside the temple is thrilling.

The sound of bells ringing, the aroma of incense, and glowing Diya lamps create a mesmerizing ambience. In addition, pilgrims and tourists from across India deliver prayers and engage in religious rites and rituals. I feel a strong spiritual vibe at the temple. Kashi Vishwanath temple is a must-visit temple in this 2 days Varanasi itinerary.

Note :-Make online reservations to avoid long lines at the main temple. Because it is generally quite crowded. When you book online, you will receive special help from a monk at the temple.

For a queue-less darshan, you must BOOK SUGAM DARSHAN TICKET by following the official website of SHRI KASHI VISHWANATH MANDIR TRUST

Tulsi Manas temple entrance. Varansi Itineraty for 2 days

Tulsi Manas Temple dedicated to Lord Rama, was established in 1964. The temple derives its name from the renowned Hindu literary work, the “Tulsi Ramayana,” written by the sage Tulsidas.

It is believed that the Tulsi Ramayana was written at this site in the 16th century. The magnificent Tulsi Manas Temple, constructed with white marble, and is a magnificent example of Indian architecture.

The walls of the Tulasi Manas Temple are one of its most remarkable features. Because the temple’s walls are covered with Goswamy Tulsida’s Ram Charith Manas episodes.

Inside the temple, you will see the beautiful image of Lord Rama with his wife Sita, brother Lakshman, and devotee Hanuman. And beautiful carvings and paintings that depict the various incidents from Lord Rama’s life.

Tulsi Manas Temple is a wonderful location to unwind after exploring Varanasi’s crowded markets and ghats.

The temple features a beautiful sculpture of Lord Hanuman. You will also witness a lot of monkeys, due to the large monkey population in Temple. The temple is especially well-known for its daily evening aarti, which is attended by hundreds of people.

Duration :- 30 Minutes.

  Timing :- 4 am to 10 pm.

After exploring the temples, you can take a walk on Varanasi Street or go shopping. Or You can return to the hotel for some rest before attending the evening, Aarti.

If you leave close to Ghats, I would recommend you to walk to Dashashwmedh Ghat for Evening Aarti, since the route will be crowdy. A short journey, such as 2 kilometres, might take 30 minutes to an hour. If you wish to take public transportation, the best option is to take a rickshaw or auto (tuk-tuk).

Witness the Evening Aarti Ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat.

Evening Aarti at Dashashwmedh Ghat in Varanasi. Monks are performing rituals in traditional Dress. One of the best things to do in Varansi in 2 days

The evening Aarti ceremony at Varanasi’s Dashashwamedh Ghat is my life’s most exciting spiritual experience. When the sun sets over the Ganges, thousands of worshippers gather on the ghat to pray to Ganga. The atmosphere is filled with devotional music, bells, chants, and the light of oil lamps.

The air is filled with an incredible scent from several incense sticks. The ceremony is performed with great dedication by priests dressed in traditional clothing, while the crowd sings devotional songs and repeats prayers.

The scene is lit up by the flickering flames of the oil lamps and the brilliant light of the rising moon. That creates a breathtaking atmosphere that is both peaceful and awe-inspiring. Visitors from worldwide come to Dashashwamedh Ghat to witness the evening Aarti. And immerse themselves in the holy atmosphere of the river Ganges.

You will get the best view of the Aarti from the boat, which is standing on the Ganga River in front of the Dashmeshwar ghat. You can hire individual boats or climb one of the boats after paying a nominal amount. Evening Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat is my favourite thing to do in Varanasi.

Don’t forget to include this in your 2-day Varanasi itinerary.

Day 2 of Varanasi Itinerary

Morning Aarti at Assi Ghat.

Morning Aarti performed by the monks at Assi Ghat Varanasi.

Start your second day with the morning Aarti at Assi Ghat, which is the best way to begin. The Aarti ceremony starts before sunrise, with the sound of devotional music, the ring of the bells, and the chanting of the prayer. The calmness of the morning, the chants, and the sounds of bells were amazing experiences for me.

You will also witness pilgrims, dressed in their traditional attire, performing daily rituals and taking a dip in the holy water of Ganga. The aarti starts with the sunrise and looks the same as the evening aarti. But the atmosphere at Assi Ghat during the morning aarti is more peaceful and spiritual.

The sound of the devotional music and the chanting of prayers fill the air, creating a serene and peaceful environment. Fewer people attend this aarti, so you can get a close look at the rituals. After arti starts a live music performance, and the whole ceremony ends with a yoga session. I feel peaceful and have fantastic energy after the morning Aarti.

  • During summer: 5.00 AM to 7.00 AM
  • During winter: 5-40 AM to 7.30 AM
  • Total Duration: Two hours approx. for the entire programme

Eat Delicious Breakfast

After Aarti, let’s head to breakfast. I’m going to showcase some of the top cafes for breakfast at the Assi ghat and nearby the ghat. Which are highly rated for delicious international breakfast and great service.

Ashish Cafe :- They bake their bread and create their peanut butter. They also serve amazing pancakes.

Aum Cafe :- They are known for their excellent black coffee as well as their pancakes.

Breakfast Brown Bread Bakery :- This is India’s first organic restaurant. They have a delicious breakfast buffet. The bakery is about 1.8 kilometres from Assi Ghat or about 22 minutes on foot.

Now head to Ramnagar Fort, which is 3.7km from the Assi Ghat, 10 to 15 minutes by car or auto, and 51 minutes by walking.

Visit the Historical Ramnagar Fort

Canon standing on the entrance of Ramnagar Fort Varanasi.

Ramnagar Fort stands on the Ganges River’s eastern bank, opposite Tulsi Ghat. It was erected in the 18th century by Raja Balwant Singh and is still owned by royal descendants.

Ramnagar Fort was built in the Mughal and Rajputana architectural styles, with elegantly carved balconies. Inside the fort, there is a museum where you will see antique weapons, royal costumes, palanquins, and coins from the royal treasury. In the fort, you will find a good collection of vintage cars.

One of the most noticeable features of the fort is a one-of-a-kind astronomical clock. This clock displays not only the time but also the year, month, week, and day, as well as the sun, moon, and other planets’ astronomical information. The fort also features excellent temples dedicated to Veda, Vyasa, and Hanuman.

Timing : 10:00 Am to 5:00 Pm

Duration : About 1 Hour.

Go for a Sightseeing Tour of Sarnath

People are doing meditation front of Budha stupa in Sarnath

After exploring Ramnagar Fort, take a half-day trip to Sarnath. This Buddhist pilgrimage destination is approximately 10 kilometres from Varanasi. Sarnath is the place where Buddha gave his first sermon after getting an alignment.

The town is also one of the four most significant Buddhist sites in India. There are plenty of interesting attractions to explore when visiting Sarnath. The Dhamek Stupa, a gigantic structure created in the 5th century AD, is the most famous landmark to visit in Sarnath.

Plus, it is believed that this is where Buddha delivered his first sermon. Another popular attraction in Sarnath is the Ashoka Pillar, which dates from the 3rd century.

You can also visit the Chaukhandi Stupa, the Mulagandhakuti Temple, a Thai Temple, and a Japanese Temple. My personal favourite is the Thai temple. This temple is one of the newest and most attractive.

People are walking the the path leading to the entrance of Mahabodhi socity temple in sarnath.

The walls and ceiling of this temple are covered with beautiful paintings and elaborate carvings. Inside the shrine, you will see lovely Buddha sculptures. And in the open space, there is also a stunning large Buddha statue.

The temple is surrounded by a beautiful green garden, making it an ideal spot to unwind. You may also visit the Sarnath Museum, which has a collection of Buddhist artefacts and manuscripts.

If you are visiting Varanasi, Sarnath is a must-see destination that should be included in your 2-day Varanasi itinerary.

The ride will be slow in the city because city roads are usually crowded, especially during Pooja in the evening. You may visit the city via Olacab , an Indian online taxi service similar to Uber.

Varanasi Travel Itinerary with Best Things to Do

Passionate travellers always plan their trips with a good itinerary, after a study of the map of the place, mode of transport available and also a great list of things to do. Keeping this in mind I have prepared this Varanasi Itinerary for 2 days, which can double up as an ultimate Varanasi travel guide for first timers.

Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India , needs no introduction. Yet for the uninitiated let me mention Varanasi is known as the city of ghats and temples. It is one of the oldest (5000 years of history) and holiest city in India. This ancient city of Varanasi is mystical, enigmatic and epitome of spiritual values of Hindu religion. No wonder why Varanasi tops the list of places to see in India of virtually every international tourist in India.

While the crowded chaotic city can unnerve you initially but take it from me this endearing city of Kashi warms you up quickly just the way it enveloped me and I was unwilling to leave.

Visit Varanasi Ghats

Varanasi is also known by the names Benares, Banaras, Kashi and Shiv Nagri. The name Varanasi was derived from the tract of land in between the confluence of river Varuna and Asi, hence, the name Varun-asi or Varanasi. Kasi is where River Varuna and River Asi merge with Ganges. Located in the middle-Ganges valley in the south-eastern part of the state of Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi lies on the left bank of the Ganga River. This location makes Varanasi a popular tourist destination among pilgrims, history buffs and nature lovers.

I have prepared this comprehensive Varanasi travel guide, also Varanasi itinerary for two days with a specific focus on varied experiences ranging from popular food of Varanasi, to shopping in Varanasi for souvenirs and other things to do in Varanasi.

Visit to Kashi Vishwanath temple tops the list if you are a devout Hindu; add to it witnessing the Ganga Aarti, boating on River Ganges, exploring ghats, visiting places within 100 km from Varanasi , and heritage walks. With the myriad of experiences it has to offer Varanasi is among the top places to visit in Uttar Pradesh, India.

How to reach Varanasi (Benaras) in Uttar Pradesh

Getting to Varanasi by Air

Varanasi has its own airport – Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport. A 17 km long airport road, the Gateway of Varanasi, connects the airport to the city. You get plenty of cabs to hire which can drop you off at your hotel in Varanasi.

Varanasi Railway station

Varanasi Junction railway station (station code: BSB) is well connected to other cities of India. Varanasi district has 27 railway stations. Almost, 45 trains originate and terminate at the station, so you can well imagine the traffic to this city.

Getting around in Varanasi

Besides walking through the lanes of Varanasi, you can explore Varanasi city in rickshaws. There are petrol driven ones and battery operated electric rickshaws, called to-to, which charge comparatively less and run on a shared basis.

Where to stay in Varanasi

I stayed in Hotel Amaya located 5.3 km west of Kashi Vishwanath Mandir, 24 min by car and 1 hour 7 min by walk. It is a decent mid budget hotel with all amenities and helpful, kind staff.

Varanasi has hundreds of hotels that suit the budget of every range. Hotel Brijarama , a palace turned into a hotel, located on the banks of Ganges with a luxury ambiance.

If you are undecided where to stay in Varanasi, I strongly recommend staying near the ghats. That way you can explore the ghats in Varanasi . There are 85 of them. Now with the completion of Kashi Vishwanath Corridor walking along the ghats has become an easy affair. You may not need the tuk tuk services too.

Many residential buildings close to the ghats are now heritage hotels. However always double check for the authenticity of such hotels. Often tourists get scammed with false information especially by the taxi drivers who pick them up from airport.

Varanasi Travel Guide

Day 1 of Varanasi Itinerary of 2 days

(You can follow this itinerary for the first day if you plan just two days in Varanasi.)

Ganga Aarti at Assi Ghat – Start your day early by witnessing the Ganga Aarti, Subah-e-Banaras, on Assi Ghat. It is a ceremony for worshipping River Ganga, a ritual that has been observed for years and years. However in the past one decade this ceremony has acquired immense popularity with tourists and photographers. This is of 45 minutes duration and takes place just before sunrise.

travel varanasi by air

Ganga Aarti at Assi Ghat Varanasi

Boat ride in a Bajra along Ganges during sunrise – After witnessing the Ganga Aarti take a boat ride in River Ganga. To watch the sunrise over Ganges is one of the most peaceful experiences one can have in this holy city. You get boats that cater to different numbers of passengers and different budget options. Choose any that suits you but don’t miss this out at any cost.

Visit Kashi Vishwanath Mandir – You can approach this temple by road or from ghat. I could witness a part of the Sapta Rishi ritual held during the evening hours. Very crowded place, the priests there in the temple premises offer to give Prasad, but in return they expect some money (whatever you wish). The exit towards Gyan Vyapi mosque is closed. One can see the dome from a distance. Walk around the temple and you will get to see many temples taken over by the authorities which were once inside houses of people.

The temple’s sanctum sanctorum houses one of the twelve Jyotirlingas (transl. Radiant form of God Shiva) in India. Read my visit: Grishneshwar Temple , a Jyotirlinga Temple.

The temple is open all 365 days of the year. There is no ticket for entering the temple, it is free. Word of caution here – Mobiles, keys, watches, cameras are not allowed in the temple. Locker facility is available in the shops to keep your electronic gadgets.

( While I write about my visit to this Kashi Vishwanath Temple of Varanasi I wish to mention that just couple of weeks back I visited the Kashi of South India – Tenkasi. I visited the Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Tenkasi . While I was writing my blog on the south Kasi temple I was wishing for visit to the north Kashi. Within a couple of days of writing the blog I had this invite to attend the International Travel Writers’ Conclave in Varanasi. Isn’t this divine intervention? I feel truly blessed for the opportunity. No wonder why Varanasi is said to be a spiritual experience. )

There are 23,000 odd temples in Varanasi. Other temples that you can visit around Kashi Vishwanath Temple are Annapurneshwari Temple, Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple, and Vishalakshi Temple, a Shakti Peeth.

travel varanasi by air

Kashi Vishwanath Mandir Varanasi – the original temple was destroyed by Aurangzeb. The present temple was built in the year 1780 by the Maratha queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore.

Shopping in Varanasi – Give a grand finale to the day by scouring through the innumerable choices of souvenirs waiting to be picked up. From textiles, metal art, wood work, colourful stones, perfumes, local handmade bead jewelries, there are lots and lots of stuff to buy in the markets in the lanes of Varanasi.

What to eat for Breakfast and Lunch in Varanasi – Go to any restaurant in Varanasi you will be treated to crispy Kachori and sabzi for breakfast. The khasta Kachoris are super crisp and are filled with masala – a mix of potato and lentils.

I had Badi Kachori , which is stuffed with a spicy mixture made of lentils called Dal Ki Pithi, and Choti Kachori stuffed with a spicy mashed potato mix and jalebis. It is the taste of Varanasi. For lunch try the bati chokha , a traditional dish, stuffed whole wheat dough balls with a spiced mix of roasted gram flour or sattu.

Another dish I suggest you try is Nimona , a local special made of minced green peas which are spiced with Hing (asafoetida). Other taste worthy dishes of Varanasi are: Laaiya Channa, Chena Dahi Vada, Choora Matar, Dahi Chutney Golgappe, Tamatar Chaat.

If you are travelling during winters to Varanasi, try the Malaiyyo – the iconic sweet of Varanasi. Malaiyyo is made of milk, fluffed up with a secret technique, and topped with Pistachios, Khoya and a scoop of powdered sugar.

Breakfast in Varanasi

Day 2 of Varanasi Itinerary for 2 Days

Start the second day early so that you can do all the activities scheduled for the day and be back on time the evening Ganga Aarti on Dashaswamedh Ghat.

Heritage walks through Weavers’ Village of Varanasi – Weavers’ Village in Lallapura is 2.2 km from Kashi Vishwanath Mandir. It was a group tour, and our vehicle dropped us a short distance away. Walking towards the homes of the weavers was an experience by itself. The narrow lanes were lined with little shops selling a variety of things especially shops selling Banarasi pan , a fav of locals.  An after food item, it aids digestion and also acts as a mouth freshener.

The rhythmic clatter of looms got louder as we approached their homes. Inside bent over looms, I found old hands guiding the warps and wefts, weaving intricate patterns out of colourful bundles of silk threads. They are passionate about their work, preserving the art and passing it down to the next generation. While the rise of power loom products creates a bit of insecurity, somewhere in the corner of their hearts they believe there are many who still treasure hand-crafted textiles.

You can visit their showrooms and have a look at their products. If you believe in supporting local businesses then indulge in the little shops here. One important tip for shopping in Varanasi – Always bargain!

Visit to Trade Facilitation Center and Craft Museum Varanasi (TFC) . It is also known by the name Deendayal Hastkala Sankul. It is a unique place where various art skills are showcased and sold. A very intelligently designed museum space spreads over three floors. Many artisans are invited to work and interact with visitors. These interactive sessions help the tourists understand the art skills better.

I was most impressed by the textile gallery. The panels on display explain the different types of weaves and weaving techniques in Hindi and English. Watch out for a piece woven using peacock feathers, morpankhi , woven with peacock feathers and a silk warp. Never will you see a piece like that anywhere else!

Then there are exhibits of Gulabi Minakari , black terracotta, brass and metal art, wooden artefacts, bead jewelry, more, more and more. You can shop for souvenirs in the different shops here and be assured that the artisans are directly benefited from it.

There is a food court in the building where you can indulge in a good meal or snack a bit before proceeding to the next destination.

Trade Facilitation Centre is 10.3 km from Lallapur. It takes 34 min by car.

travel varanasi by air

Deendayal Hastakala Sankul – Trade Centre and Museum

Sarnath Stupa and Archaeological Museum – Sarnath is 8 km from the Trade Facilitation Centre. It takes 39 min via Gautam Buddha Rajpath Rd. Most tourists in Varanasi make a trip to Sarnath too.

Sarnath in Varanasi is a holy place for Buddhists. Dhamek Stupa is the same place where the Buddha preached his first discourse to his first five disciples (Kaundinya, Assaji, Bhaddiya, Vappa and Mahanama).  Walking through the remains of monasteries gives goosebumps. This entire area was a deer forest once. Imagine the great Buddha walked this same land, centuries back!

The Sarnath museum is treasure house of historically precious remains, stone inscriptions from the ancient era excavated from the adjacent site. Tour time required is around half an hour. Try and do this first and then visit the archaeological site, it will be more pleasant towards the evening and you can get some cool sunset photographs. Hire one government guide who will take you to both.

TFC to Sarnath is 8 km and takes 18 min. via Varanasi Ring Rd and Sarnath – Munari Rd

Places to visit Varanasi – Strolling through Stupas – Sarnath Archaeological Site

Evening Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat Varanasi – After your visit to Sarnath head back to Varanasi. You can witness the Ganga aarti held at Dashashwamedh Ghat. It starts at about 6:45 PM, after sunset and lasts for 45 minutes. If you wish for a good spot to witness the spiritual event, arrive at least an hour early. Alternatively you can hire a boat, to get a clear relaxing view away from the crowds.

Dashashwamedh Ghat is the main and biggest ghat in Varanasi on the Ganga River. According to a legend, God Brahma had created it to welcome the Mahadeva, who is God Shiva. Originally this ghat was built by Peshwa Balaji Baji Rao in the year 1748. A few decades later, Ahilyabahi Holkar , the Queen of Indore rebuilt the ghat in the year 1774. Today the evening aarti attracts the maximum number of people.

travel varanasi by air

Evening Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat Varanasi

Like the morning aarti, seven young saints dressed up uniformly in silky saffron, maroon and white robes conduct this ceremony, chant prayers for Ganga Ma with a layered brass lamp, flowers, incense sticks, conch shell and other items for rituals. It is the most spectacular religious or devotional ritual in Varanasi.

If you still have energy and enthusiasm left, take a boat ride to see how beautifully the ghats are illuminated at night. You can see the Ganga aarti conducted at a couple of other ghats too. You can also see the heart wrenching scenes of funeral pyres burning in Manikarnika ghat from a distance, which may not be possible from close quarters.

Where to eat in Varanasi – Best restaurants and hotels in Varanasi

After my experience of having good foods in Varanasi, I strongly recommend having breakfast in the local restaurants near ghat. I had kachori sabzi in Theth Banarasi located at a walking distance from Assi Ghat. Dinner at BrijRama Palace on Darbhanga Ghat is worth the time and money for the grand music and dance performances during dinner. Baati Chokha restaurant too is an ideal place for a good Thali meal with local Varanasi dishes.

Other places to eat in Varanasi are: Kerala Café near Bhelupur, Vaatika Pizzeria at Assi Ghat, Dosa café and Brown Bread. They have a good rating in several sites.

Best Time to Visit Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh

Summers (April to June) are best avoided. Though the days are longer and you can explore more, it can get unbearably hot especially in the noon, when it would be better to stay indoors.

Monsoons (July to September) water level in Ganges can get dangerously high. Boating is banned if there is excess rainfall and rise in water level beyond safety zones. .

October to March are the best months to travel to Varanasi. There are plenty of festivals one can witness. The weather is pleasant too.

What to wear in Varanasi?

Varanasi is a place of pilgrimage and deeply rooted in Indian traditions. Though today the scenario is changing and Varanasi attracts curious tourists in huge numbers. Hence, wearing modest attire is suggested. Wear light clothes in summers but keep yourself well covered too. Showing too much skin can bring some unwanted attention.

By chance I happen to visit your post. Beautifully written. All points covered which a tourist would want to know before visiting the place. Exceptionally well written pointing out the food joints to souvenirs, from aarti timing to local market. Shall be following you on twitter!!! Hope to read more of your travel diaries!

Thank you so much Keya!

' data-srcset=

This looks like a great itinerary for spending two days in Varanasi! I would love to do everything you mentioned, from seeing the River Gangi at sunset, eating delicious kachori sabzi and sampling the restaurants you recommended. The Sarnath Museum would be a great take to see the ancient , and I also appreciate the attire suggestions – this is an excellent tip I wouldn’t have known!

' data-srcset=

Varanasi the holy city is forever in my bucket list. The city of ghats and the Kashivishwanath temple is so soulful and mesmerizing with all it’s sounds, vibes and colors. The ganga arti at the Assivand Dashashwamedh ghat is something I would love to see. And a heritage walk to the weavers block to see the drapes is must. Also the variety of local flavors like the Badi and chhoti kachori, malaiyyo, nimona sound so tempting to me.

' data-srcset=

Wow! I had no idea that there is so much to see and do in Varanasi. Thank you for sharing this detailed guide. Very helpful for first-time visitors like me.

Looking forward to visiting the temples especially the Kashi Vishwanath Mandir as well as the try the local cuisine.

' data-srcset=

Such a sheer coincidence. My recent visit to Shantiniketan was like a trip memory lane for you and so is Varanasi for me, a city I absolutely love and have visited umpteen number of times. Yours is a lovely guide for first timers and the best that one can cover in two days. Sadly for me I am yet to visit the Crafts Museum which I certainly will next time.

' data-srcset=

I knew little about Varanasi before reading this post. But I now better understand why it might be considered the city of ghats and temples. While there are some amazing outdoor sights. I would want to save time to explore the archeological museum and wander around the archaeological site. Good to know a slightly longer stay could include some day trips from Varanasi.

' data-srcset=

This is an excellent guide to Varanasi; you show the most important and exciting places to see. What’s more, you give many valuable tips to help plan a trip. I spent four days in Varanasi during my first trip to India in 2008. I knew this long ago; it was my first non-European trip. Varanasi made a great impression on me, and I would like to revisit it someday and see if and how it has changed over the years. Admiring the ceremony for worshipping at Ganga Aarti on Assi Ghat was a spiritual and magical experience for me. I agree it should be on the top list to do in Varanasi. I also love the Kashi Vishwanath Mandir temple. Also, the evening Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat Varanasi is unique. I can see from your pictures that there are much more tourists or ceremony participants now than during my visit.

' data-srcset=

You have made such a comprehensive guide. It would help many people. I loved the morning arti at Assi Ghat and the evening cruise. I could have roamed around the old city a bit more, had we got the time. Overall, Varanasi is a diffrent experience where the ancient remains truly colourful and soul striking.

' data-srcset=

I love the idea of taking the train there to see the landscape. So pretty! That’s smart to avoid the really hot seasons, so an October to March timeframe sounds perfectly doable. I’m also glad you included what to wear while in Varanasi because I wouldn’t want to offend anyone while there. I don’t dress immodestly, but keeping shoulders covered and not wearing shorts in some locations is perfectly appropriate. Great tip!

' data-srcset=

Seems to me a visit to Varanasi is a combination of pilgrimage, sightseeing, and shopping. It will be interesting to watch the Ganga Arti on Anssi Ghat early in the morning and late in the afternoon. I think a visit to weaver village will be wonderful, too. Probably the tourism bureau can educate the weavers to not spitting banarasi pan on the street in front of their house/shops. To keep their village clean and more inviting to tourists.

I took an autorickshaw from the station to my place of stay. On the way streets were filled with honking rickshaws, bustling pedestrians, and the smells of street food missed with incense.

National Highways NH2, NH7, and NH31 pass through Varanasi, connecting it to major cities in Uttar Pradesh and neighbouring states. You can either take a state-run bus or hire a taxi or private car for a road trip to Varanasi.

How many days required for Varanasi

The number of days required for a visit to Varanasi depends on your interests and the level of exploration you desire. However, to experience the essence of Varanasi and explore its key attractions, a minimum of three days is recommended. This time frame allows you to immerse yourself in the cultural, spiritual, and historical aspects of the city.

Within three days, you can visit the popular ghats along the Ganges, witness the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti ceremonies, explore significant temples, take a boat ride, visit Sarnath, and explore the vibrant lanes of the old city, indulging in local street food and shopping.

Where to stay in Varanasi

Varanasi offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit different preferences and budgets. Whether you’re looking for luxury hotels, budget-friendly guesthouses, Hostels or traditional homestays, Varanasi has something for everyone. Here are some of the recommendations –

If you are on a budget or traveling solo and looking for a hostel then Moustache Hostel near Assi Ghat, Live Free Hostel near Assi Ghat, Wander Station near Dashashwamedh Ghat or GoSTOP in Bhelupur are good options.

If you are on a medium budget then Kashi residency near Assi Ghat, Hotel Tridev Grand in Bhelupur, The Sunaina near Shivala Ghat/Assi Ghat, Cosy Inn Homestay in Rampura Luxa are some good options.

In case you are looking for a luxury stay then Taj Ganges near Varanasi station, Amritara Suryauday Haveli on Shivala Ghat, Hotel Madin in Varanasi Cantonment area or Rivatas by Ideal in Varanasi cantonment are some good options.

How to travel in and around Varanasi

When it comes to traveling in and around Varanasi, you have several options to choose from. Here are the most practical ways based on my personal experience:

Walking: Varanasi’s narrow lanes and alleys are best explored on foot. Walking allows you to experience the city’s vibrant atmosphere, discover hidden gems, and observe the local way of life. It is a convenient option for exploring the ghats, temples, markets, and nearby attractions in the old city.

Cycle Rickshaws: Cycle rickshaws are a popular and eco-friendly mode of transportation in Varanasi. They are especially useful for navigating through narrow lanes and crowded areas. Negotiate the fare beforehand.

Auto-rickshaws or Battery-operated Rickshaws: You can opt for shared auto, which charge you a fixed amount from one destination to another and these are most commonly used by locals. You can also hire an individual auto but in that case negotiate the fair beforehand clearly.

Taxis: Taxis, both regular and app-based services, are available in Varanasi. But don’t use taxis for local sight seeing because inside the city in many areas they are not allowed and you have to walk. Taxis are most comfortable going outside the city to places like Sarnath.

Motorcycle taxi ride: This is another mode of transportation and very practical for traveling in Varanasi. Rapido, an app-based service, is a very fast and economical way to commute if you are ok to ride a pillion on a motorbike.

It’s important to note that Varanasi is crowded and congested, especially in the old city area. Plan your travel accordingly, allow extra time for traffic. Consider a combination of different modes of transportation depending on your needs and the distance you need to travel.

Top airline flying to varanasi.

It would have been perfect if there was onboard entertainment.

Food was unfit even for prisoners. larger front seats are terribly uncomfortable, which is ironic. Thorough need to upgrade aircraft on such a long route.

Food could be better they need a better caterer in DC flight from India always has better food

Everything! To start with, seats, food tray table, entertainment console all are broken! Imposing duty free baggage fees for $250 as a surprise penalty cannot be appreciated! Airlines should be responsible for transferring the checked baggages to the connecting flight. Having customer go through the transfer is painful considering the travel tiredness! No soft drinks served on flight is another crumble!

Old creaky plane, poor entertainment, USB port did not work. Food was ok.

Old fittings. Went business class. Staff not very considerate regards comfort.

Very old plane. Broken tray tables n seats. Entertainment system super slow to operate and very little content.

Service was good, crew response was prompt. The baked fish and Malay fish as well as the sauces with them were bland.

Screen are not working. Windows not clean. Staff is very good. Food is okay. Experience is good. I hope the up coming is more then betters for others airlines thank you.

This time I felt better. Air hostlers. Need more and more improvement on transit. Get more trouble and painful with service.

After that, consider downloading a few movies on your tablet or phone for a binge session sans guilt. Or, throw in that juicy novel you haven’t had time to read. Lastly, a few healthy snacks and a neck pillow will go a long way to making your flight as comfy as possible.
  • There’s also a list of prohibited items for your hand luggage which can differ between carriers and flight routes. Generally, avoid carrying anything sharp, flammable or explosive. This includes things like knives, razor blades, flares and aerosol cans. Sports equipment like baseball bats, tennis rackets and objects considered weapons, such as swords and batons, are also banned from the cabin.
  • Whether traveling short or long-haul, layering up is key to a comfortable flight. Opt for loose, natural fabrics that will keep you cool and pack a sweater for any changes in cabin temperatures. Keep your feet happy in a pair of flat shoes or sneakers.
  • The condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a risk on long-distance flights. It’s the result of blood clotting caused by poor circulation and inactivity. Walking up and down the aisle and doing foot and leg exercises while seated can help prevent this developing. Wearing compression socks or tights can also help to lower your risk.

Earthquake snarls air and train travel in the New York City area

By Megan Cerullo

Edited By Aimee Picchi

Updated on: April 5, 2024 / 4:36 PM EDT / CBS News

An  earthquake  centered in New Jersey and felt across the New York City region on Friday disrupted air and rail travel, with ground stoppages at airports in the New York City area and delays in train service.

Travel operations were momentarily halted Friday morning with ground stoppages at John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens and at Newark Liberty International Airport in Newark, New Jersey, with crews working to resume normal air traffic operations. By early afternoon, the ground stoppage at JFK had been lifted.

Arriving and departing flights in Newark also resumed in the afternoon, but delays averaged roughly two hours,  according  to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The earthquake, which occurred roughly 10:20 a.m. Eastern time, had either a 4.7 or 4.8 magnitude and was centered near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, 40 miles west of New York City,  according to the United States Geological Survey.

Newark airport is experiencing average departure delays of 43 minutes, according to flight tracking website FlightAware. Inbound aircraft that are already airborne are delayed by about an hour. Inbound flights that have not yet taken off are being held until 12:30 p.m., according to the site.

Flights in and out of LaGuardia airport in Queens were also delayed, likely in order for airport staff to check for damage to the airport and runways and clear away any debris.

The ground stoppages and delays are not expected to last long.

Additionally, New Jersey Transit said it's experiencing up to 20-minute delays across its entire rail service system, in both directions. NJ Transit said it's inspecting a bridge for damage to ensure train travel is safe.

Dog Company Announces New Air Travel Experience Designed Specifically for Canines: They 'Will Be the VIPs'

Routes will currently serve the New York City metro area with flights to Los Angeles and London

travel varanasi by air

Man's best friend will soon be able to get the VIP treatment when taking to the skies!

Earlier this week, BARK , a dog-focused company that provides products, services and content for canines, launched BARK Air , the "world’s first air travel experience designed specifically for dogs first, and their human companions second," according to a press release obtained by PEOPLE.

Currently, routes will serve the New York City metro area through Westchester County Airport (HPN) with flights to the Los Angeles area via Van Nuys (VNY) and London, by Stansted Airport (STN).

According to the release, an Argus Platinum-rated charter company is "responsible for all aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance-related matters." BARK, meanwhile, the release said, is "focused on creating and delivering a world-class air travel experience for dogs and their people."

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

After booking a trip online, users will be contacted by a BARK Air concierge, who will gather information about each dog and their human’s travel plans.

On the day of travel, pets and their human counterparts will arrive at the airport 45 to 60 minutes before takeoff, when the dogs will mingle with other canine companions as their owners dine on meals prepared by onsite chefs.

Next, dogs will be greeted by BARK Air concierge, who will "help them settle into their experience through socialization and dog-centric cabin preparation," per the release. They will also have access to various aids, the company added, including "calming treats, noise-canceling ear muffs and calming jackets to ensure a stress-free and enjoyable flight."

Once onboard, BARK-branded treats, snacks and "surprises" will be offered to the dogs, and they will be "served their beverage of choice during ascent and descent to ensure they do not experience any ear discomfort commonly caused by changes in cabin pressure," BARK said.

“When we started BARK in 2011, we were on a mission to disrupt the dog space and create products designed for dogs and their humans. We are excited to take the insights we’ve learned over the years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs — from the ground to the skies,” said Matt Meeker, co-founder and Chief Executive Officer at BARK.

“We believe this initiative will elevate awareness of our brand’s mission and values, introduce more dog lovers to the BARK family, and help enrich the lives of dogs and their people around the world," he added.

In a statement of his own, Zahir Ibrahim, Chief Financial Officer at BARK, echoed those sentiments, stating, “We believe this initiative will raise awareness of BARK’s mission in a cost-effective manner. Given we are not committed to booking flights far in advance, we have a lot of flexibility to opportunistically charter flights during times of high demand."

"In parallel, we believe the additional traffic to BARK.co will raise awareness of our full offering, benefiting our core business in the long term," he continued.

Dogs will soon be able to experience their own “ fur st” class flight with the launch of the world’s first jet charter company specifically designed for man’s best friend.

BARK, the dog toy company that coordinates the popular treat subscription BarkBox, is partnering with a jet charter service to take away the challenges of long-distance traveling with dogs, according to a press release. BARK Air, as the company calls it, offers the “white glove experience typical of a human’s first-class experience and redirected all that pampering to pooches.”

Taking dogs on airplanes is, typically, a stressful endeavor with different airlines having different policies for pet travel. For example, American Airlines allows small dogs in a carrier to be placed under the seat in front, but larger dogs are put in the cargo space, which has been found to be stressful for the pet. For United Airlines , pets can fly in the cabin if there’s enough space, but they must fit in a carrier under the seat in front.

“We are excited to take the insights we’ve learned over years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs – from the ground to the skies,” said Matt Meeker, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at BARK, in a statement.

However, you’ll need to pay a hefty fee for the dog-friendly flight. For now, a ticket for just one dog and one human will run you at least $6,000 one way.

The first BARK Air flights will take off on May 23, and so far, there are only two flight routes available, both from New York’s Westchester County Airport. From New York to London’s Stansted Airport, it’ll cost $8,000 one-way and to Los Angeles’s Van Nuys Airport will cost $6,000 one-way. Tickets are available for purchase on April 11.

Not only does BARK Air allow dogs, it also focuses on the furry friends by treating them like VIPs, the press release said. BARK Air passengers can skip TSA checkpoints and screenings and instead experience a simple check-in process where they can meet the other dogs on the flight and the humans are served a meal cooked by on-site chefs.

When boarding, a BARK Air concierge is on-hand to ensure the dogs are socializing and adjusting to the environment well.

Each flight will undergo “Dogs Fly First” flight prep that includes “calming pheromones, music, and colors that pups prefer.” To make the flying experience easier and more enjoyable, dogs have access to various aids such as calming treats, noise-canceling ear muffs, and calming jackets.

During takeoff and descent, dogs are given a beverage of their choice to help their ears adjust to cabin pressurization. Of course, there will be plenty of treats on the flight.

Global airlines are governed by strict 'freedoms of the air' dating back 80 years. They've created some funky routes.

  • Global airlines are governed by nine "freedoms of the air," drafted 80 years ago in 1944.
  • These dictate how airlines can operate in foreign nations, with some more complicated than others.
  • The fifth freedom can give airlines a competitive edge and help capitalize on demand.

Insider Today

Over the past 100 years of shuttling people around the globe in metal flying machines, the world's aviation network has grown into a vast web of intersecting routes that connect nearly every corner of the globe.

Because of the complexities of crossing international borders, commercial carriers follow what is known as the "freedoms of the air" — or the right for an airline to operate within a nation other than its own.

These building blocks of aviation make international connectivity possible.

According to the International Civil Aviation Organization, or ICAO , there are five official freedoms and four other "so-called" rights, that have been outlined in agreements between countries. ICAO is an agency of the United Nations that sets standards for the global aviation industry.

Drafted in 1944 during what is known as the Chicago Convention, the laws were written as world governments relaxed their grip on airline networks and pricing. This liberalization, however, meant countries with bigger airlines would likely dominate the skies — prompting them to implement strict route regulations.

The governing freedoms not only promote more competition and choice but also allow airlines to optimize routes and increase efficiency, according to FlightRadar24 .

Most international carriers except for a very small few follow the basic freedoms of allowing airlines of one state to fly over or land in another, and vice versa.

Open Skies agreements simplify these international routes, like the one between the European Union and the US that allows any airline registered in either market to fly between the two.

Some freedoms are more complicated, but provide interesting and diverse route options to travelers.

The fifth and eighth freedoms of the air

Beyond the first four freedoms, there is one more officially recognized right, as well as the four "so-called" rights. The latter four were not officially drafted during the 1944 Chicago Convention but are regularly accepted and practiced worldwide.

According to ICAO, the fifth freedom gives an airline of one nation the right to fly between two other countries, so long as the one-stop routes start or end in its home country and all parties agree.

Among the most well-known fifth freedom routes are Emirates' flights from New York-JFK to Milan and Newark to Athens, both flying onward to the carrier's base in Dubai.

Similarly, Singapore Airlines flies between New York and Singapore via a stop in Frankfurt , and Australian flag carrier Qantas flies between Sydney and New York via Auckland, New Zealand, according to Google Flights.

United Airlines' delayed fifth freedom route will fly between the US mainland and Cebu, Philippines, via Tokyo starting in October, the carrier told Business Insider on Monday. It was supposed to start in July — before the FAA launched an investigation after a string of safety incidents at United.

These unique routes can be efficient for airlines trying to serve destinations that a plane can't reach nonstop, like Emirates' fifth freedom between Mexico City and Dubai via Barcelona or Latam Airlines' route between Sydney and Santiago, Chile, via Auckland.

Still, carriers will make stops on otherwise attainable direct flights because they can capitalize on the high-demand market on both legs — filling more seats and making more money.

Customers may also view carriers like Emirates and Singapore as a more luxe offering than the competing US and EU carriers across the Atlantic.

On the other hand, an airline that wants to serve a low-demand market can better fill the plane by adding a fifth-freedom leg to a nearby city, like Dutch flag carrier KLM's flight between Amsterdam and Santiago via Buenos Aires.

Among ICAO's most interesting "so-called" rights is the eighth freedom, which gives an airline the right to fly between two cities in a country that isn't its own— but the domestic leg seats cannot be sold as the entire journey must start or end in the foreign airline's home nation.

Related stories

Qantas used to fly an eighth freedom route between New York and Sydney via Los Angeles — but only those originating or destined for Australia could fly on the domestic cross-country leg, Forbes reported.

Also no longer flying, per Cirium data, African carrier Air Senegal, for example, launched a flight from Dakar to Baltimore with a layover in New York in 2021. The domestic leg seats couldn't be sold.

Here's a closer look at the freedoms of the air.

"Five Freedom Agreements"

First Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation to fly over another without landing.

Second Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation the right to land in another territory for a technical stop. Think refueling or an inflight mechanical issue that prompted an unplanned emergency landing.

Third Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation to carry passengers to a foreign state, and vice versa.

Fourth Freedom

This allows the airline of one nation to take on passengers originating in another. The fourth freedom is simply the reverse of the third freedom.

Fifth Freedom

This allows an airline of one nation to carry passengers between two countries other than its own so long as the route starts or ends in the carrier's home state.

"So-called" rights

Six Freedom

This allows an airline to carry passengers from one nation to another via its home state. This represents the typical hub-and-spoke network used by global airlines.

Seventh Freedom

The seventh freedom is similar to the fifth freedom but takes out the limitation of where the route must start or end. Instead, an airline has the right to fly between two nations other than its own without flying onward to its home base.

The EU's single-aviation market, for example, grants airlines the right to fly to and from any EU country, like Ireland-based Ryanair that flies between Rome and Vilnius, Lithuania.

Eighth Freedom

This allows an airline to fly between two cities in a foreign country so long as all passengers originate or are destined for the airline's home state.

Ninth Freedom

This cabotage freedom allows an airline of one nation to fly between two points in a separate single country. This does not exist in the US, but it does in the EU — like easyJet's back-and-forth nonstop between Paris and Nice, for example.
