Culture and customs.

Colombian culture tends to revolve around the Four F’s: Festivals, Food, Fun, and Family. While this bold and beautiful nation loves to party, it’s also a very traditional, family-centered society, with many Colombians choosing to live near their families and remain at home until marriage.

With most Colombians being Catholic, religion plays an important part in daily life, and visitors will be able to see this themselves while traveling through Colombia. Hundreds of churches and cathedrals populate the large cities, while smaller chapels are dotted throughout the villages and rural areas. Religious festivals like Easter and Christmas are celebrated with gusto – after quiet times of reverence come the massive street parties, parades, and feasts. A variety of cultural influences collide at these events - Spanish, African, and Caribbean customs and traditions have been brought to Colombia over the centuries and shaped its vibrant culture.

The hallmarks and customs of daily life vary from region to region, with Bogota’s upwardly mobile citizens enjoying bars, driving cars, and having access to a wide range of technology, cuisine, and media. Colombia’s rural dwellers (subsistence farmers, plantation workers, and tribal groups) live a more simple existence in rustic housing and without traffic or the stresses of modern life. What unifies most Colombians though, regardless of living conditions or class, is a fierce love of Colombia, respect for God, and loyalty to the family unit.

Geography and environment

Located in the northwest of South America, Colombia shares borders with   Venezuela ,   Brazil ,   Peru ,   Ecuador ,   and Panama, and is the only South American country to have a coastline on both the Pacific and the Caribbean. Home to a wide variety of natural environments and varying terrain, travelers can expect to see mountains give way to low-lying plains and tropical rainforests meet balmy beaches. Add sprawling metropolises, small farming communities, far-reaching plantations, fishing villages, and colonial-era towns, and you’ve got an ever-changing landscape at your fingertips.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savouring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Colombia has rich culinary traditions, quality fresh produce and loads of cosmopolitan bars, cafes, food stands and restaurants to visit. For a summary of what to eat in South America, check out   our in depth guide .

Things to try in Colombia

These popular thick corn tortillas can be found almost everywhere in Colombia. Baked or fried, with beef, cheese, pork, chicken or beans, they make the perfect breakfast or afternoon snack.

2. Bandeja Paisa

Originating from the Andean region of Colombia, this dish is a staple of most Colombian diets. Consisting of a plate of rice, beans, avocado, fried egg, chorizo and other meats, it’s a filling feast fit for a king!

3. Ajiaco Bogotano

This hearty chicken stew is a Bogota specialty. Packed with succulent chicken meat, corn, potatoes and herbs, it’s a tasty and satisfying budget meal.

4. Tropical fruit

Colombia is known for having some of the best fresh produce in the world. Bananas and plantains are among the best, and you’ll be able to find street vendors selling them fresh, fried and grilled. Fruit shakes are also widely available and offer travellers a chance to sample some exotic fruits that they may not have tried before.

History and government

Early history.

The area now known as Colombia was inhabited by Caribbean and Andean groups who lived in small communities based on organized agriculture. Spanish explorers were drawn to the land and fascinated by the proliferation of gold. The myth of El Dorado soon abounded, and the search for this land of gold soon became an obsession.

From the creation of Santa Marta in 1525, colonization spread rapidly throughout the rest of the country, leading to interest from neighboring countries that were also keen to exploit Colombia’s natural resources. Many Africans soon started to arrive as a part of the slave trade and provided a much-needed labor force for the colonizers. Life was tough for the slaves; however, African song, dance, and other afro-traditions helped to shape Colombian culture well into the future.

Recent history

Independence from Spain rose to the top of Colombia’s agenda after years of resentment. Simon Bolivar soon became a local hero, fighting for independence from the Spaniards. It took many years, but in 1819, Colombia was granted its freedom – Bolivar had fought his way into the minds and hearts of Colombia, where he is still revered.

However, this spirit of freedom was short-lived as Colombia descended into confrontation and civil war in the following years. Colombia seemed to be at the mercy of political opponents and guerrilla groups, weaving between periods of peace and extreme violence.

By the 1970s, Colombia had a new wave of criminal activity stemming from the lucrative cocaine trade. Pablo Escobar became one of the world’s most notorious (and wealthy) criminals by controlling most of the world’s drug trade. Colombia became a dangerous place to live (and travel in) during this period, yet has recently emerged victorious from these dark days. With vastly improved national security and a growing economy based on agriculture, textiles, and mineral mining, Colombia is welcoming back tourists with open arms.

Travelers might visit Colombia for the adrenaline sports, nature reserves, and beaches, however, retail therapy should also be included in that list, as Colombia’s shopping is surprisingly sensational.

It’s a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. The United States generally has strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Colombia

1. Jewelry, art and handicrafts

Some of the best artisans in South America live in Colombia. Choose from handcrafted gold jewelry, bright textile bags and scarves, and vibrant contemporary art available in galleries, markets, and boutiques all over the country.

2. Fashion and accessories

Colombia’s more cosmopolitan cities have enough fashion-forward boutiques and malls to keep most clothes-hounds happy. Medellin in particular is well known for being Colombia’s fashion capital and is a true hotspot in the Latin American fashion world.

3. Coffee beans

As one of the world’s largest producers of coffee beans, Colombia is a great place to pick up top-quality beans at lower prices than back home. Buying straight from the coffee regions ensures quality and freshness.

Top 10 must-see cities of Colombia

1. medellin.

What makes Medellin so magnificent? Once considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world, Medellin’s temperate weather, hospitable locals, gorgeous gardens, and artistic enclaves have prevailed and this cultured city has emerged full of spirit, passion and optimism.

Explore Medellin on our 9 day Cafe Colombia tour.

This vibrant town may have been founded centuries ago, but nowadays Popayan has a youthful spirit due to the local university that attracts thousands of young Colombians to the region. Home to many of Colombia’s most celebrated poets, composers, and painters, Popayan also has some of the most stirring Easter celebrations in the world.

Known locally as the ‘Capital of Heaven’, Cali’s museums and public art may dazzle you, but it’s the up-and-coming food and party scene that’s getting loads of attention. With modern restaurants serving international cuisine, local eateries offering traditional fare, lively salsa bars open until dawn, and a fair worth traveling for in late December, Cali shouldn’t be missed!

4. Barichara

Less of a city and more of a colonial town, the faded charm of rustic Barichara has been endearing travelers for centuries. Colored, whitewashed buildings with carved wooden doors and red roofs, quaint little churches, and hilly streets make Barichara the perfect place to linger for a few days of quiet downtime.

Embrace the charm of Baricahra on our 10 day Explore Colombia adventure.

Colombia’s sprawling capital is a frenetic fusion of old and new, with skyscrapers towering over colonial buildings, wild traffic giving way to peaceful parks, and cobblestone streets leading to bohemian night spots. With so much going on, you’ll be exhausted trying keep up with Bogota’s pace.

Experience Bogota on our 17 day Best of Colombia tour.

Lofty Tunja’s historic architecture, spiritual sites, and lively festivals make it an interesting destination for travelers from all walks of life. Whether you’re interested in magnificent art, colonial-era architecture, or cultural enlightenment, Tunja delivers on all accounts.

7. Cartagena

Surrounded by walls built to guard against pirates, Cartagena captivates travelers with colonial mansions, cobbled streets, Spanish-style houses, and brightly colored buildings. History seems to drip from every street corner, especially when Cartagena takes on a golden glow by night.

Admire Cartagena on our 12 day Real Colombia tour.

8. Pamplona

Although one of Colombia’s less-visited spots, cultured Pamplona is well worth checking out. With a wealth of museums, galleries, and churches nestled within its narrow streets and rousing Holy Week celebrations, Pamplona offers a peak into Colombian traditions and daily life.

9. Santa Marta

Seaside Santa Marta attracts flocks of tourists chasing sunshine, scuba diving, and seafood. With beautiful beaches, atmospheric bars, chilled-out open-air cafes, and heritage sites, Santa Marta should feature on every travelers list.

10. San Gil

This small city is emerging as one of Colombia’s hottest new destinations, mainly due to the plethora of adventure sports on offer in the surrounding areas. Test your limits with paragliding, caving, rafting, and kayaking, and then relax in the pleasant botanical gardens and cafes of sunny San Gil.

Festivals and events in Colombia

Barranquilla carnival.

Held in the lead up to Ash Wednesday each year, this spectacular collision of color, flashy costumes, lively dancing, and rhythmic Caribbean, Latin, and African beats draws more than one million revelers from around the world.

Medellin Feria de las Flores (Festival of the Flower)

Occurring each August, this week-long ode to local flower farmers (Colombia is one of the leading producers of cut flowers in the world) culminates in a colorful and fragrant parade, where farmers march the streets carrying silletas (elaborate flower arrangements) on their back.

Feria de Cali (Cali Fair)

The salsa capital of Colombia ends each year the only way it knows how – with a five-day city-wide party beginning right after Christmas featuring parades, music, bullfighting, a beauty pageant, food, and of course, salsa dancing.

Pasto Carnaval de Negros y Blancos (Black and White Carnival)

Each January, the city of Pasto engages in an unusual two-day celebration of racial equality – locals and visitors party on the street and paint each other black for Blacks’ Day and throw white powder on each other for Whites’ Day.

Night of the Candles

Homes and cities across the country are lit up with candles and paper lanterns to mark the unofficial start of the Christmas season. Taking place on the eve of the Immaculate Conception (a Catholic celebration and national holiday in Colombia), it’s a night meant for socializing with friends and family.

When is the best time to visit Colombia?

There is always a good time to visit Colombia, as the seasons vary throughout the country. While the climate generally remains constant throughout the year, the temperature can change depending on where you are. In the far north, the climate is usually tropical, warm and humid, while central Colombia can get quite cool - Bogota is known for its mild temperatures, particularly at night.

The wet season is roughly from March to May and September to November, although this varies around the country. December to March is the peak travel period due to the dry conditions and holidays and festivals that proliferate across the country. During this time, expect more sunshine, but also more people competing for space in the cities and tourist regions.

Do I need a visa to visit Colombia?

Visitors from over 102 countries can enter Colombia without requiring a visa for a maximum of 90 days for tourist purposes. These countries include the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Travelers not from a visa-exempt country can apply for a tourist visa online or at the nearest Colombian embassy or consulate.

However, this is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Expert Advice

diana

As you drive through the coffee region, you’ll see coffee plants as far as the eye can see. Colombians are the coffee experts – and for good reason! They are the 3rd largest producers of coffee beans and specialize in Arabica beans. They take these bragging rights very seriously. Each bean is handpicked and sorted to guarantee that the coffee they produce is of the utmost quality. And delivering a delicious, hot cup of coffee is exactly what they do. Drink it like a local and take it with no cream or sugar.

colombia expert advice 2

Amp up the adventure and cruise through Salento valley while standing in the back of a Willy (4x4 jeep). Locals use these jeeps because they handle the uneven mountainous terrain better than the average truck and there’s still a surplus of them left over from WWII. Feel the wind in your hair while you take in rolling hills covered in avocado and wax palm trees.

Colombia - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Guatape, located on the shores of the Embalse Guatape

The only country in South America to enjoy Pacific and Caribbean coastlines, Colombia ranks high in the list of the hottest travel destinations in the world. For a long time, Colombia wasn’t safe for tourists, and this means that travel is quite new to the country. As a result, you can still come across sights and attractions that are relatively unexplored and haven’t been splashed all over the internet.

The vast terrain of Colombia presents all kinds of outdoor explorations that range from diving, rafting, climbing and trekking. San Gil is famous as the adventure capital of the country, and Ciudad Perdida is where you get to enjoy inspired jungle walks. Other things to do during a trip to Colombia include hiking, scuba diving and whale watching.

Tour Highlights

  • Take a mud bath at El Totumo Volcano
  • Explore the Lost City of Teyuna
  • Climb to the very top of the El Peñón inselberg
  • Visit the underground Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá
  • Cross the bridge at Las Lajas Sanctuary in Narino
  • Swim in the lagoons of Tayrona National Natural Park
  • See the annual Monarch butterfly migration

Travel Tips

  • 'Tranquilo' is the Colombian way of life. Everything and everybody is relaxed, and nothing is rushed. Whether you're lost, late, or panicking, locals will almost always respond with a simple 'tranquilo'.
  • Bring your toiletries with you when on a holiday in Colombia. Even something as simple as hair conditioner can be hard to come by in this country. When you do find them, they are often expensive and not of the quality you are used to.
  • Tips are usually included in your bill already. If you want to be sure, look for a line that says 'propina' on your receipt.
  • Be prepared to pay for 'luxuries' like soap and toilet paper when using public toilets.
  • Colombia has a historically bad reputation for drugs and gang violence. However, the country is very safe to visit. Take all the safety precautions you would normally take in any country and you will not experience any problems.

Colombia has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Colombia before planning your tour. And if you’re still hunting for more things to do and places to explore in Colombia, do check out our Colombia Travel Guide for more information.

"Meeting the indigenous tribes of Tayrona National Park with Dr. Santiago Giraldo in Colombia will be one of the greatest experiences of your life."

Travel Director

Visit La Candelaria, Bogota's vibrant historic heart

Explore the lively heart of Bogota in La Candelaria, with beautiful architecture and fascinating museums. You’ll witness a blend of old and new, from impressive graffiti murals, to grand colonial façades from the 16th century. Visit the Museum of Gold to see pre-Columbian gold artifacts, wander the markets, and sample traditional dishes like ajiaco.

Explore the Coffee Triangle

We’ll take you deep into the UNESCO-listed Coffee Triangle, with historic farms and stunning coffee fields. You’ll drive through the lush countryside before sharing lunch with a coffee plantation owner’s family. You’ll then join Juan Pablo Echeverry at his hacienda for a memorable Colombian ‘coffee baptism’.

Stroll through Botanical Gardens of Medellín

We’ll enjoy lunch in the Botanic Gardens of Medellín, or Jardín Botánico, a gorgeous sanctuary in the heart of the city. This sprawling park features a large lake and a maze of pathways between beautiful trees and gardens. It’s also home to a large population of birds and wild iguanas.

Visit Tayrona National Park in Northern Colombia

Join the prominent Davila family for lunch at a private beachfront estate, and learn about their status as South America’s largest producers of organic food. You’ll then meet leading anthropologist Dr. Santiago Giraldo, for a rare cultural encounter with the region’s indigenous tribes. This is a truly special experience, exclusive to Trafalgar’s Colombia tours.

Enjoy a scenic drive through the stunning Cocora Valley

Explore the lush Cocora Valley, where you can wander under the world’s tallest palm trees. You’ll meet the locals of the coffee communities and see a traditional Jeepao Show. You’ll also enjoy a lunch of smoked trout at a trout farm, and learn how to make latté art at a local café.

Our top 5 things to do in Colombia

Our Colombia vacations take you from the famous cities like Bogota and Medellín, to the lush Coffee Triangle and Cocora Valley, to the spectacular wilderness of Tayrona National Park.

The Gold Museum

The Gold Museum, or Museo del Oro, is one of South America’s top museums. It’s located in Bogota and houses the largest collection of gold artefacts in the world, with more than 55,000 pieces of gold. You’ll also find other items from Colombia’s pre-Hispanic cultures including metal, pottery, wood, stone, shell and textiles.

Inquisition Palace

It may be one of the finest buildings in Cartagena, but the Palace of Inquisition has a dark past. It was once the torture headquarters for the brutal Inquisition, and today it’s a museum displaying the inquisitors’ torture instruments. You’ll also learn the history of the city with paintings, furniture, pottery and armaments.

Museum of Antioquia

Located in Medellín, the Museum of Antioquia is one of the top art museums in the country. It contains around 100 artworks donated by Colombian artist Fernando Botero. The museum also features colonial, modern and pre-Colombian art collections. Outside the museum, you’ll find 23 abstract bronze sculptures made by Fernando Botero.

Best museums in Colombia

Our Colombia holiday packages will take you to the top museums, from the world’s largest collection of gold artefacts to the former Inquisition headquarters.

Tamales are a classic Latin American dish, found from Mexico to Costa Rica. In Colombia, tamales are eaten throughout the year but are especially popular over the Christmas holidays. They’re made from flavored rice, meats, vegetables, egg and spices, wrapped in a banana leaf and steamed for hours.

Bandeja Paisa

Hailing from the Paisa region of Colombia, the bandeja paisa is a beloved traditional meal. The generous dish includes rice, red beans, Colombian sausage, ground meat, chicharrón (fried pork rind), chorizo, plantain, avocado and fried egg. The word ‘bandeja’ means ‘platter, so you know you’re in for a delicious feast.

Ajiaco is a traditional Colombian dish and is especially popular in Bogota. It’s a hearty soup made with three varieties of potatoes, chicken, corn and the Galingsoga parviflora herb (known as guasca). It’s best enjoyed with a plate of rice and avocado, or topped with capers and cream.

Best food in Colombia

Our Colombia organized tours are all about discovering the delicious cuisine of Colombia. Your Local Specialist will show you the best places to try the favorites, from tamales to ajiaco.

My wife and I had been interested in visiting Colombia largely because my father worked in Barranquilla in the early to mid-1960s and I had not been back since then. This was an amazing itinerary! I was a single female traveler and felt safe at all times. I had the best group guide Martin, who was super friendly, knowledgeable & went above and beyond to show us a great time. I have a lot of dietary restrictions & Martin really tried his best to accommodate me, I am so grateful. Unfortunately I had an emergency & had to leave on day 4 so my trip was disrupted. I would love to return to Columbia in the future. This was an action packed itinerary. I highly recommend this tour & tour guide Martin to anyone who is active & loves to explore.

Best of Colombia 11 Days Tour

This was certainly the best tour of Colombia! We normally travel independently, but given the size of Colombia and our meager Spanish, we opted for a tour. After a lot of comparison, we chose this one. We chose it because it offered the most complete experience, small group size (just us as it turned out), and the company has excellent reviews. The tour exceeded our highest expectations. Alejandro at GuideEcuador answered all of my questions quickly and patiently. He also modified the tour in places to accommodate our age-based limitations. The quality of the tour can't be surpassed. The local guides were excellent, and spoke English fluently. Not only were they knowledgeable, but also agreeable, patient, kind, and helpful. Our drivers skillfully negotiated the insane traffic. It was wonderful to know that every detail was taken care of, and all we had to do was be ready on time! We would give this tour 10 stars!!!

Trump's hush money trial

April 22, 2024 - Protests at Columbia and other schools escalate

Matt Egan, Alicia Wallace and Chandelis Duster

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology says it is 'determining next steps'

From CNN's Jillian Sykes

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology issued a statement Monday regarding tents on its campus.

"MIT officials are aware of the tents, and are determining next steps with a focus on ensuring campus is physically safe and fully functioning. MIT Police were on scene throughout the night and will continue to be present."

Robert Kraft says he is willing to support The Kraft Center at the university

From CNN's Chandelis Duster

Robert Kraft, billionaire owner of the NFL’s New England Patriots and backer of Columbia University, on Monday said he is still willing to support The Kraft Center at the school that supports Jewish students, calling it “a haven of safety.”

Kraft, an alumnus of the university, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead” that he loves the school and “we have to have accountability.”

“There are both professors and students within the university who say things that I think cross the line and there should be accountability. I believe in free speech. Say whatever you want but pay the consequences. And don't have your face covered. I don't think that should be allowed,” he said.

“I can’t believe in New York City at Columbia University Jewish students are afraid to go to classes in the United States of America in 2024. It’s amazing to me and horrible,” Kraft also said.

Asked where he drew the line at Columbia University regarding both pro-Palestine and pro-Israel protests and what he finds objectionable, he said “there is a lack of education on the situation” happening in the Middle East.

“I’m concerned about America and what’s going on in this country. And to keep it open and free for all people of all backgrounds to do as they wish,” he said.

Asked if he has confidence in Columbia University’s president, Minouche Shafik, he said he thinks she is “very well intentioned” and said “we have to look at what goes on with faculty.”

Columbia faculty stage walk-out in solidarity with students

From CNN's John Towfighi

Hundreds of people gathered on Low Plaza Monday afternoon as Columbia University faculty delivered speeches in support of the student protesters who were suspended and arrested Thursday.

Faculty who spoke denounced university president Minouche Shafik’s decision to authorize the New York Police Department to remove protesters from campus and demanded all legal and disciplinary charges be dismissed and expunged from students' records.

Faculty held signs that read, “Hands off our students,” and “End student suspensions now.” Some faculty donned their academic regalia and wore sashes that read, “We support students.”

Speeches were met with cheers and claps from the crowd, as well as chants for Shafik to resign.

Christopher Brown, a professor of history, said, “I’m here because I am so concerned about what is happening at this university, with where we are now and with where we are going. Thursday April 18, 2024, will be remembered as a shameful day in Columbia history.”

“The president’s decision to send riot police to pick up peaceful protesters on our campus was unprecedented, unjustified, disproportionate, divisive and dangerous,” Brown said.

US Rep. Ilhan Omar, whose daughter Isra Hirsi was among the protesters arrested Thursday , posted on X that while she’s glad to see faculty demonstrate in solidarity with students, she wants the protests to focus on Gaza.

"On Thursday, Columbia arrested and suspended its students who were peacefully protesting and have now ignited a nationwide Gaza Solidarity movement. This is more than the students hoped for and I am glad to see this type of solidarity. But to be clear, this about the genocide in Gaza and the attention has to remain on that," Omar wrote.

NYC Mayor condemns "vile" and "disgusting" rhetoric at college campuses

From CNN's Alicia Wallace

New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Monday condemned “vile” and “disgusting” rhetoric being used at campuses such as Columbia University, where students are holding protests over the Israel-Hamas War.

Adams told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he supports First Amendment rights but said law enforcement officials are on the ready if any of that speech goes too far or if there’s an imminent threat to people or property.

"That is one of the fundamental rights we hold dear as Americans: The right to protest," Adams said on CNN's "The Lead." "What we have seen playing out on many of our college campuses, and particularly Columbia University, is hate. We’re seeing vile language being used."

Adams noted that he can feel the "duality of this moment" and how the events of the past six months are weighing heavily on Jewish and Palestinian New Yorkers. He added that the police escorts of Jewish students through campus were reminiscent of the Army soldiers who escorted nine Black students into a high school in Little Rock, Arkansas, nearly 67 years ago.

"There is no place for hate in this city," he said.

New York Police Department officers have a “large presence” surrounding Columbia but have remained off the campus grounds at the request of the school’s administration, NYPD deputy commissioners said earlier on Monday.

Adams told Tapper that the NYPD’s commissioner of legal matter is monitoring the protests for any speech that violates law. Additionally, police officers will take "appropriate action" and go on private property if there’s an "imminent threat."

Protesters gather at The New School in New York City

From CNN's Elisabeth Buchwald

The New School students and pro-Palestinian supporters rally outside The New School University Center building, Monday, April 22, 2024, in New York.

Protesters have gathered at The New School, located near the Chelsea area of the New York City borough of Manhattan.

An encampment of four tents was set up in the lobby of the building that houses auditoriums, a cafeteria and a library. Roughly 75 students, and other people who have The New School IDs, gathered inside the building.

"Disclose, divest, we will not stop, we will not stop, we will not rest," was repeatedly chanted.

Outside the building, protesters from the school, as well as outsiders, joined in chants from the sidewalk.

There is a stark difference between the inside and outside of Columbia University's campus

From CNN's Ramishah Maruf

A pro-Palestine rally is held at the steps of Lowe Library on the grounds of Columbia University today in New York City.

There’s a stark difference between the inside of Columbia University's campus and the outside, where there are protesters gathered on the street.

The encampment is only open to those affiliated with campus. Only those with a Columbia ID can enter the campus gates. Inside the encampment, programs include teach-ins, poetry readings and film screenings. Some students are quietly finishing assignments, while others are painting posters.

Elsewhere around campus, students are eating and completing assignments. Many students take graduation pictures at this time, and some are in graduation gowns walking down Broadway. Risers are set up for an upcoming commencement ceremony.

Other students are holding large American flags underneath Butler Library.

Pro-Palestinian and Pro-israel face off outside of Columbia University which is occupied by Pro-Palestinian protesters in New York on April 22, 2024.

But the students can still hear the tension that is taking place yards away at the university gates. There is a gathering of pro-Palestinian protesters, who in the early afternoon were chanting “I believe that we will win” and “Long Live the Intifada.” There was a smaller group of pro-Israeli protesters, who chanted back “Down with Hamas” and “Victory to Israel.” A line of New York Police officers were monitoring the street.

What it's like inside the Columbia University encampment

Students protest in support of Palestinians on Columbia University campus, as protests continue inside and outside the university in New York City on April 22.

The inside of the encampment is quiet – most of the noise comes from protestors outside the gates of Columbia University's campus, who are chanting “I believe that we will win” and “Long live the Intifada."

It was a sunny day on campus, and in one corner, students were painting posters. One person strummed a stringed instrument, and other students are reading books or on their laptops finishing assignments. Others have donated provisions, ranging from a table of snacks to hygiene products. There was also a pile of blankets.

“We’ve just been trying to keep students mobilized and keep pushing for divestment,” Dalia, a first-year student at Columbia College, told CNN. “We are a very mobilized student body and a very unified student body. Hundreds of people have been in and out of the encampment.”

CNN agreed not to publish her surname due to safety concerns.

She said the students at the campus “refuse to be complicit in the genocide, the apartheid, and the occupation of Palestine.”

There are strict community guidelines for the encampment. One rule says not to share names or details of anyone met in camp, and asking for permission before photographing or taking video.

The encampment is filled with dozens and dozens of tents, from students to neighboring Barnard College staff. Today’s encampment program included an Earth Day performance, poetry reading and a Dabka lesson, a traditional dance from the Arab region. Prior program events included dance performances from different cultures.

Democratic House members tour Columbia campus

Democratic Reps. Jared Moskowitz of Florida, Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey, Dan Goldman of New York and Kathy Manning of North Carolina, who are all Jewish, spoke at a news conference Monday after touring Columbia University’s campus.

"We saw it firsthand as we walked past the encampments on the university's main lawn full of protesters spewing incendiary antisemitic hate and vitriol. Many aren't even Columbia students I've been told. Their campaign of intimidation is sickening and shocking and as the White House said yesterday, ‘echoes the rhetoric of Hamas terrorists,'" Gottheimer said.

He also criticized Columbia University leadership, saying, “toothless combinations from administrators aren't going to stop the anarchy we’re seeing.”

“The only way to do it is with deeds, not words,” Gottheimer said. “Colleges have a legal obligation under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act to provide students, including Jews and Muslims, a school environment free from discrimination and harassment based on race color or national origin. Yet just feet from here, Jewish students are being verbally and even physically assaulted.”

Gottheimer continued, “To the administrators of Columbia and beyond, here are our demands: Stop the double talk and start acting now. Discipline harassers, restore civility on this campus, encourage peaceful constructive dialogue.”

He also gave a message for students: “While the leadership of Columbia may be failing you, we will not. We will do everything in our power to keep you safe and do everything in Washington we can to make sure that you feel welcome at this university or any university across the United States of America. And Columbia University, if they don't follow through, will pay the price.”

Goldman said he was "encouraged" the Columbia University president issued guidelines about additional security, calling it a "very important first step" and criticized what is happening on campus.

"That is unacceptable for a university, that is unacceptable for an academic institution. There is no question that everyone has a First Amendment right to speak out in this country and that must be preserved," Goldman said. "But a university and all universities have an obligation to maintain the safety and security of their students from all backgrounds."

Manning said university leadership should "do more to keep Jewish students safe and to re-establish an atmosphere in which all students can learn, study and participate safely in campus life."

"Columbia must also move forward with its promised efforts to teach its students and its faculty about the nature and history and dangers of antisemitism. It must ensure that Columbia professors are not encouraging and spreading antisemitism," Manning said.

"I call on the US Department of Education and the US Department of Justice to work with the White House to ensure that all universities take steps necessary to keep Jewish students and faculty safe. I also call on Congress to enact legislation to implement the steps outlined in the US national strategy to counter antisemitism, to address the scourge of antisemitism which is a threat to the foundations of our democracy," she said.

President Joe Biden condemns antisemitism on campus

From CNN's Kevin Liptak

U.S. President Joe Biden delivers remarks during a visit to Prince William Forest Park to commemorate Earth Day in Triangle, Virginia, today.

President Joe Biden decried antisemitic protests around college campuses Monday and said his administration was working to combat anti-Jewish hatred.

"I condemn the antisemitic protests, that’s why I’ve set up a program to deal with that," Biden said when questioned about the events at Columbia University in New York.

"I also condemn those who don’t understand what’s going on with the Palestinians," he said, without expanding upon what he meant.

Biden was speaking after an Earth Day event in Prince William Forest Park in Triangle, Virginia.

When asked whether Columbia's president should resign, Biden appeared to mishear: "I didn’t know that. I'll have to find out more," he said.
