If the problem is really about having a cracked water line, then you need to repair it immediately.

Turn off the water pump. Using a pocket knife, cut out the cracked portion of the water line. You should have a plastic tubing on hand and cut out a portion that has the same measurement with the part that you’ve just removed.

If you don’t know what kind of plastic tubing to get, just inquire with your trusted RV supplies store.

Step 5: Patch up the water line

If the plastic tubing that you got has a lot of slack in it, you can patch up the water line with just one fitting. But if your plastic tubing doesn’t have any slack, it’s best to use two and attach them together before you put them on the water line right in the spot where you cut the old portion.

Leave it to dry for about 12 to 24 hrs. Once it’s already dry, you can turn on the water pump again and observe what happens. It should be able to solve the issue and you can expect that there won’t be any leaks anymore.

I bought a Bayite pump to replace an existing pump on a 15-gallon point sprayer, the screw hooks were perfectly aligned, the pump was more powerful than the old one, worked as advertised, used about 1.5 hours yesterday and will be repeated in the following days. Once you hook it to your distribution system, chances are you’re not gonna get 5 or 3.5 GPM because the water’s gonna travel through pipe, it’s gonna travel through elbows, fittings and your faucet fixtures. The important thing is that you have enough flow, enough pressure to make it workable in your RV.

A 12 volt water pump for RV typically lasts up to 10 years, and the best RV water pumps with solid construction can last well beyond that mark, given that you have installed and used it correctly and give it proper maintenance.  Sometimes, though, it just depends on pure luck. The best you can do is get a model with good reviews, from a prestigious manufacturer and with a fairly long warranty, which by the rule of thumb is a good measure of the product’s functionality and durability.

You may need to prime your RV water pump after replacing it, or if your RV’s been out of use in storage for quite some time. The process is simple, as follow: Fill up your fresh water tank. Turn on the cold water faucets in your RV, make sure they are completely open. Switch on the water pump near your RV water tank. This should prime the pump by pushing water up from the tank through your faucet. Let the water flow a while, then turn the faucets off. Note that air must be completely removed from each and every faucet. You can do this by opening and closing the faucets, as well as the showerhead and toilet, one at a time to run water through each.  Your pump will be fully primed when the water pump only turns on when a faucet is actually open and not in between.

Your RV water pump uses pressure switches to start and stop working. If this switch is not set properly, pulsations occur. The more sensitive the pressure switch is to the change in pressure caused by turning on the faucet, the fewer pulsations. Most pumps have an ideal setting that can minimize or almost eliminate pulsations.  To make the switch more sensitive to the change in pressure, make the pump start quicker and run longer. The water pressure will therefore stay steadier, reducing the frequency of pulsations.

As it is a pressure sensing device, the water pump will only turn on when there is demand for water, and it only pumps water on demand.  It’s good to know though that many RVers recommend turning the pump off at night to prevent possible sleep disturbance. Every couple hours or so the pump relaxes it’s pressure just enough to run the pump for a second to bring the pressure back up, which can disturb the light sleepers.

The most common symptoms that your water pump is not working properly and might need replacement are: Runs when not in use: If your water pump continuously runs or keeps cycling on and off when not in use, while you have confirmed that water is available to the pump, the pressure switch might be faulty. Or else, This might be due to something as simple as a loose connection or a crack in one of your plumbing lines. Pump runs but no water from faucets: Ater making sure that there is actually water in your freshwater tank, check all the water lines that lead in and out of the actual water pump. Look for loose connections and worn, split or cracked lines. Next, check if there is any problem with the plumbing lines by seeing if there is water flowing to the pump. Start by carefully loosening the water line to the pump. If you disconnect it and the water line seems dry, then the issue is the actual water line coming to the pump from the tank. Deal with any type of blockage or tube damage.  If there is still no water, the problem lies with the pump itself. Examine it to see if the motor is faulty and needs to be replaced, or else you will need to replace the whole unit. Especially when another assistant turns the water pump on again, and the water only comes out in small drips, you most likely need to get a new water pump.  Excessive and unusual noise: Most of the RV pumps have a multi-chamber diaphragm design which over time can become corroded or calcified rendering them inoperable. Improper winterization can also damage the diaphragm creating increased noise and very low water pressure. Otherwise, the culprit might be motor failure. Leaks: In this case, check the fittings and connections as well as the pump housing to make sure the issue is indeed caused by the pump and not something else in your plumbing line. Won’t Turn On: First, make sure you didn’t leave the drain open when you meant to be filling up the fresh water tank. Next, check your 12 volt fuse panel, then move to the pump and look for the possible use of an inline fuse. Next, check the electrical connections on the pump and then move to the pump switch to see if it’s still functional. Then, use a multimeter to check if power is actually making its way to the pump. It might be that you winterized your RV last winter, now it’s spring and the pump is not working. In this case, make sure you reconnect everything correctly after you pumped RV antifreeze through the water lines. If nothing resolves the problem, it’s time you get a better RV water pump replacement .

To silent a loud pump, you have lots of options. By slipping some foam pads under the pump, it’s possible to isolate the vibrations and keep the noise down. In the case that source of noise seems to be rattling water pipes, you should wrap foam pads around them. Your RV water pump is the center of your travel trailer plumbing system.  It’s what gives you that consistent water pressure, so you have nice water flow to all of your faucets.

Your trailer battery powers the water pump. Turn on the water pump switch at the control center, and your 12v water pump will now work.

I remember my first popup camper, and it had an old pump with no power. When you wanted water at the one and only faucet, you had to pump up and down with one hand while trying to wash the other hand.  And when you switched hands, the first hand got everything wet because you were now using it to pump.  So, I can attest a 12v water pump with water pressure is a luxury.

RV Water Pump Location

Your travel trailer plumbing system comprises of hoses, hose clamps, pex tubing, and a fresh water tank.  All of this is with the water pump at the center. And since the water pump needs to create pressure, it is usually centrally located to provide a good flow rate. 

Knowing this will give us the main clue to the RV water pump’s location. 

By far, the most common RV water pump location is under or very near the kitchen sink.  The reason for this goes back to what we just reviewed, as the pump is centrally located.  Even if your kitchen sink is at the back of your travel trailer, the water heater and sink are the main sources of water and will be the closest to the water pump.

Start by looking under the kitchen sink. You should notice a drain vent and see other hoses and pex piping going to the sink.  Check around for the signs of a water pump.  Sometimes, a panel or a storage compartment may cover the water pump.

If you see a panel that is covering a section under the sink, it should have screws or a way to remove it.  An RV manufacturer knows that you need to access your water pump, so they will have a way to remove the panel if one is indeed is covering it.

If you did not find it under the kitchen sink, look for a storage compartment or access panel very near the sink.  My travel trailer has a panel cover with two screws between the refrigerator and kitchen sink. 

Once I open this panel, I see the RV water pump and hot water heater.  And with that, the hose that goes down to the fresh water tank.  All very close to each other. This allows the pump not to work as hard to deliver water pressure and good water flow.

Third location: Next to the freshwater tank

Another possible location for the water pump is near your fresh water tank.  Most fresh water and grey water tanks are in the belly or under the floor of a travel trailer.  There is no easy access to them except by going under the trailer and removing the underbelly insulation and panel.

However, some smaller travel trailers, usually under 20 feet long, have a smaller fresh water tank inside the trailer.  It will be sitting on the floor and with clear access. Many are located in the compartment under a bunk bed or another floor-mounted storage compartment.

If you have one of these smaller trailers and the tank is inside your trailer, your RV pump may be very close.  Start by going to your fresh water tank.  Look around and see if you have any hoses near a water pump.  Check around for a nearby access panel.  If one is nearby, there should be screws or other ways to release that panel to get to the water heater.

Knowing where your travel trailer pump is located is important to every RV owner. Whether you need to repair a leak or install a new pump, getting access to your water pump is crucial. Start by checking under the kitchen sink.  This is the most common location and is a place to start.  The next possible location is near the kitchen sink.  Since the kitchen sink and hot water heater are usually nearby, so is the water pump.  Finally, if you have a smaller travel trailer, you may have your fresh water tank sitting on the floor somewhere in a compartment. If so, your water pump location should be nearby.
