Best adventure vacations in the u.s..

For some, escaping the daily grind means getting their adrenaline pumping on a rugged mountainside or 50 feet below the ocean's surface. Others search for snowy peaks and alpine lakes simply for a change of scenery. Using expert advice and traveler votes, U.S. News created a list of some of the best adventure vacations in the U.S. for a thrilling walk on the wild side. Be sure to cast your vote below to help determine next year's ranking.

Yellowstone National Park

Grand canyon national park, yosemite national park, jackson hole, kaua'i, hawaii - the big island, acadia national park, adirondacks.

travelling adventure

For more than 11,000 years, Yellowstone has been home to Native Americans (26 different tribes have historic connections to the park), while the park's natural wonders draw visitors from all over the world. Hiking trails wind throughout the Wyoming, Montana and Idaho sections of the park, taking you to sights like the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone and Mammoth Hot Springs. If hiking isn't your style, you're in luck: Biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling and kayaking are all available. Camp at one of Yellowstone's sites or in its undeveloped backcountry, if you're feeling especially adventurous.

travelling adventure

Arizona's Grand Canyon boasts an array of adrenaline-pumping activities, most notably hiking and whitewater rafting on the Colorado River. To avoid the crowds, check out the hiking routes on the North Rim; chances are you won't see as many people along the challenging North Kaibab Trail. You're welcome to explore on your own, but for some of the best views, consider signing up for a guided excursion in a Jeep, atop a mule or in a helicopter.

travelling adventure

Yosemite National Park features mountains, meadows, massive sequoia trees and plenty of waterfalls – all less than 170 miles east of San Francisco. Activities are similarly varied, ranging from bird-watching and stargazing to snowboarding and biking. Climbers will relish the opportunity to boulder and slackline throughout the California park. Meanwhile, novice and experienced hikers alike will find plenty of trails to trek, whether they want to explore mountains or valleys. Keep in mind, Yosemite's famous Half Dome hike is best suited for proficient hikers.

travelling adventure

Jackson Hole, Wyoming, offers adventurous pursuits year-round. In winter and early spring, ski resorts boast plenty of powder for skiing, snowshoeing and tubing. For a more relaxing outing, opt for a sleigh ride. In the warmer months, kayaking, whitewater rafting or hiking in Grand Teton National Park is a must. And in fall, no visit would be complete without leaf peeping and listening to the bugle calls of wild elk in the National Elk Refuge.

travelling adventure

The beauty of this lake straddling the California-Nevada border is impossible to ignore. The picturesque peaks offer some of the best skiing in the country (both cross-country and downhill), while the crystal-clear lake is ideal for kayaking, canoeing and boating. You'll also find plenty of other activities, including disc golf, parasailing, hiking and golf. For a different kind of thrill, try your luck at the casinos or in nearby Reno, Nevada.

travelling adventure

Filled with acres of misty rainforests, plummeting waterfalls and oceanside cliffs, Kauai's opportunities for adventure are enough to excite even the most jaded visitor. Float on a tube down the Hawaiian island's waterways, soar over the trees on a zip line or hike through rainforests and along the rim of Waimea Canyon. Surfing is another can't-miss activity here. Poipu offers great waves for new surfers, while the North Shore's gnarly waves are made for expert athletes.

travelling adventure

Like other Hawaiian Islands, Maui offers a myriad of activities to get your blood pumping, from sea kayaking to helicopter tours to volcano hiking. But this is just the beginning: Head to Maui's northeast coast to admire roaring waterfalls, belching blowholes and jagged peaks. And don't forget to spend time in the water. Visit Molokini for a colorful and exotic snorkeling experience, or suit up to go into the depths of the ocean during a scuba diving excursion.

travelling adventure

The largest of Hawaii's islands boasts plenty of jungle to trek and not one, but five volcanoes (some of which are still active). Explore Mauna Loa and Kilauea, two of the active volcanoes, by hiking through Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Its 150 miles of trails wind through rainforests and volcanic craters, among other natural wonders. After your hike, cool off in the island's surrounding waters by snorkeling in Honaunau Bay, located about 20 miles south of Kona on the island's western shore.

travelling adventure

There are ample opportunities for adventure in Maine's forested wilderness. If you're considering Acadia for your next family trip, note that the park's rocky trails can be challenging for little legs. However, there are several forest and coastal trails that are better suited for children, including the Jesup Path and Hemlock Path Loop, and the Wonderland Trail. Additionally, you and the kids will get a kick out of watching the park's harbor seals.

travelling adventure

This mountainous region in upstate New York has plenty to offer thrill-seekers. Test the powder on Whiteface Mountain, navigate the area's waters in a canoe or test your climbing skills on one of numerous rock faces. While here, you'll also want to check out a few of the region's more unique offerings, such as the Lake Placid Olympic Sites. At Mount Van Hoevenberg, fill your need for speed on its Cliffside Coaster or by partaking in bobsled rides. Then, try the zip line at the Olympic Jumping Complex to mimic the feeling of ski jumping.

travelling adventure

You'll need to pack a sturdy pair of shoes for your trip to Sedona, Arizona. The town's striking red rocks are best seen on foot from one of the destination's 200-plus hiking paths. Not sure where to start? Kick off your trip at The Hike House, where staff can help you pick a trail that suits your skill level. You can also explore the area by horseback or via an all-terrain vehicle or a mountain bike.

travelling adventure

If you're an adventure junkie, you shouldn't miss out on America's "Last Frontier." Take a boat trip through Tracy Arm Fjord to see crumbling glaciers and swimming seals, or head to breathtaking – literally, it's an exhausting hike – Mendenhall Glacier. Save some of your strength for other pursuits in the Alaskan capital, too, including fishing trips, glacier climbing, whale watching, skiing and dog sledding. No matter what you decide to do, be sure to wear plenty of layers and sturdy shoes.

travelling adventure

Telluride, Colorado, was a gold and silver mining town until 1972 when the first ski lift was installed. The town then began its transformation into a mecca of outdoor adventure. In winter, available activities are limited to snow sports like skiing, ice climbing and sledding. As spring begins, Telluride's options expand to include everything from paragliding to rock climbing to kayaking. Extend the adventure by camping instead of staying in a hotel.

travelling adventure

Anchorage, Alaska, showcases Mother Nature's adventurous side in Chugach State Park, where craggy cliffs beckon to hikers, rock climbers, cross-country skiers, snowmobilers and snowshoers. Families can get the kiddos in on the action by checking out the more novice Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. Alternatively, they can treat younger travelers to a horseback riding trip or bike ride through one of Anchorage's other parks – there are 223 available within city limits.

travelling adventure

Located between San Francisco and Los Angeles, Big Sur features the longest stretch of undeveloped coastline in the continental U.S. Home of famous U.S. Highway 1, this California treasure attracts roughly the same number of visitors as Yosemite. Strict regulations have limited how many commercial options are available for adventurers, but hikers and nature lovers will feel right at home here. Hit the trails at Los Padres National Forest or Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. Don't forget to visit the beach in the latter, too, to snap pics of the stunning Keyhole Arch at sunset.

Get ready for your next iconic adventure like a pro with these tips

From climbing Kilimanjaro to walking the Camino de Santiago, we asked guides, travelers, and explorers for hacks on how to train for these trips of a lifetime.

A scuba diver looks at a school of orange and pink goat fish swimming above a colorful and diverse group of coral.

The start of a new year is often the time people resolve to tackle bucketlist travel goals: rafting the Colorado River , scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef , exploring the poles. But how does an entry- to intermediate-level adventurer start preparing to make those big dreams a reality?

In 2010, to train for an assignment that required me to live for weeks at Mount Everest Base Camp (elevation 17,598 feet), I snuggled into my cold-weather sleeping bag on the deck outside my home in northern Minnesota during a few weeks of sub-zero temperatures in January. I started with a few hours in daylight and eventually slept out all night without a tent. That exercise helped me discern the number of clothing layers I would need to stay warm and put to rest my fear that I would freeze to death.

The best training isn’t always physical, sometimes it’s psychological or even spiritual. And every adventure requires developing a specific set of skills. That’s why we’ve asked the following experts for their advice on how to approach seven iconic travel experiences.

Scuba diving the Great Barrier Reef

A scuba diver holds a comparison picture of a once colorful and diverse coral reef underwater at the same spot, which is now mostly damaged and colorless

“It’s preferable to learn to dive in a place where there’s warm, clear water, as poor visibility can be disorienting and cold water makes it difficult to equalize and draw deep breaths,” says Carrie Miller, co-author of National Geographic’s A Diver’s Guide to the World . Neither should be a problem on the Great Barrier Reef, off the northeastern coast of Australia . There, visibility ranges between 30 to 100 feet depending on the season and water temperatures range from 72 degrees Fahrenheit in the austral summer to 84 degrees in the austral winter.

With many dive training organizations, she says, you can do the coursework and pool sessions in your hometown and complete your course on the Great Barrier Reef.

“Some people don’t take to scuba diving straight away and that’s okay,” she says. “It’s common to struggle with skills like mask clearing and the experience can feel overwhelming.” Practice doing laps in a pool wearing a mask that’s half full of water. This will help you get used to the sensation of water sloshing around your nose.

( Scared to scuba? Here are five reasons it’s finally time to learn .)

One thing to know about the reef is that it has already lost half its corals, so instead of expecting to dive in pristine beauty, use your trip as “an opportunity to learn about the pressures facing the reef,” says Miller.

Whitewater rafting the Grand Canyon

A group of people on a yellow raft, paddling a whitewater raft through rapids on Colorado River in the Grand Canyon.

Extreme heat and submersion are two major risk factors when rafting the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon —neither of which are easy to prepare for in advance, says Kevin Fedarko, a former Colorado River guide and author of the forthcoming book , A Walk in the Park: The Story of a Spectacular Misadventure in the Grand Canyon.

“There’s an old saying among river guides: ‘If you’re hot, you’re stupid.’ ” To cool off in summer temperatures that often rise well above a hundred degrees, Fedarko recommends that rafters, always under the supervision of their guides, jump into placid sections of the river with their clothes on several times per day. “The Colorado is the best AC you’ve got,” he says. “Getting all of your clothing completely wet allows the effect of evaporative cooling to bring your body temperature back toward normal.”

( Explore 10 amazing river trips in North American parks .)

As for getting dunked in a monster rapid, says Fedarko, “unless you’re a Class V kayaker, the pure shock of being tossed in is so overwhelming there’s little you can do to prepare short of filling up your bathtub with 59-degree water and trying to simulate what it’s like.”

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Hikers, dressed in pants, longsleeve shirts, backpacks and walking poles, walk along a dusty trail near a snow capped peak in Mount Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania.

The trip to the “ Roof of Africa ,” which soars 19,340 feet above Kilimanjaro National Park , Tanzania , does not require technical climbing skills, but it still calls for caution. Many people ascend too quickly before properly acclimatizing, ultimately succumbing to altitude sickness.

To prepare physically for the ascent, Dave Hahn, a mountaineer and guide for RMI Expeditions , recommends pushing pre-trip workouts beyond just one or two hours at a time. Spend entire days outside doing just about anything. “Ski, snowshoe, pull weeds, whatever. Be slightly uncomfortable for twelve hours at a time,” he says.

( Here’s how the pursuit of one European peak gave rise to modern mountaineering .)

On Kilimanjaro, Hahn tries to time it so that he reaches Uhuru Peak with the sunrise, requiring a near-midnight start, followed by a nearly 10,000-foot descent back to Mweka Camp. “Summit days are extremely long, like 11 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Kili.”

Skiing the Alps

“Skiing in the Alps is so different,” compared to the U.S., says Gordy Megroz, the author of National Geographic’s 100 Slopes of a Lifetime . “The resorts are enormous and often connected.”

For example, Matterhorn Ski Paradise , the highest ski area in the Alps, spans Switzerland and Italy . Because “the hotels are better in Zermatt and the food is better in Italy,” Megroz prefers to stay in Switzerland and ski 6.5 miles in the shadow of the Matterhorn to Cervinia, Italy, to eat lunch.

To prepare for such epic runs, he says, build your endurance and strength by signing up a few months in advance for two- or three-times-per week CrossFit (a workout that focuses on varied, high-intensity, functional movements) or Orange Theory (a workout that focuses on heart-rate zone training) classes. Or find a personal trainer who can set you up with a specific ski training plan.

( Climate change is altering how visitors experience Switzerland’s Eiger mountain .)

“There are no ski areas in the Alps that are easy,” says Megroz—the reason he advises beginner or intermediate skiers to stay on groomed trails, known as “on-piste,” in Europe. If you’re an advanced intermediate and want to explore off-piste, says Megroz, hire a guide. In Europe, unlike in the U.S., many of the ungroomed runs are not bombed by the ski patrol to clear avalanches. “You can certainly ski the off-piste stuff on your own,” says Megroz, “but it’s dangerous.”

Four skiers, ski down a steep, snow-covered mountain side with the towering Matterhorn Mountain in the background.

Cycling in Tuscany

Few journeys are more idyllic than cycling past the olive groves and vineyards of the Tuscan countryside. On trips like these, “endurance serves travelers more than speed,” says Lauren Hefferon, the founder of 35-year-old bike tour company Ciclismo Classico .

“I always remind people that if they are going on a bike trip, they have all day to cycle the 35 to 40 miles from point A to point B. But even if you ride three to four times per week [pre-trip],” she says, “that will not prepare you for the hills of Tuscany.”

( Take a road trip through Tuscany's breathtaking countryside .)

In addition to logging hours on your bike, Hefferon also recommends going to a gym two to three times per week to build core strength, always reminding clients that multi-day cycling trips are not a race. “Speed might cause exhaustion, disappointment, and an accident.”

Exploring the poles

A group of men, dressed in red, winter coats, snow pants, and boots, pitch a tent in a snowfield during compulsory survival training near the US Base at McMurdo, Antarctica.

“People look at these big trips and see the end product,” says Eric Larsen, the polar explorer who in 2010 was the first to reach the North and South Poles and climb Mount Everest in one year. “What you don’t see is the process of getting there.”

This January, Larsen is leading an eight-day polar training course that aims to train BIPOC polar adventurers. His co-leader is Emily Ford , the first Black woman to hike Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail . “I have this philosophy: Train hard, travel easy,” says Larsen. During the course, held on Lake of the Woods in northern Minnesota, the attendees spend three days learning how to dress even before they step on to the ice to train.

“It’s very deliberate how slow we go,” says Larsen. “We’re not just throwing people into the woods and telling them, ‘Here’s a toothpick and a piece of jerky.’ The more time you spend outside getting to know your body, the better off you’ll be.”

Walking the Camino de Santiago

Two young women walk with backpacks down a road winding through green wheat fields on the Camino de Santiago near the town of Granon in La Rioja, Spain. The sky is blue with a few clouds and the rolling, green hills extend for miles.

Millions of people have walked the Camino de Santiago, the iconic pilgrimage created in the ninth century by the Catholic Church. It’s the one bucket-list travel experience that doesn’t require much—if any—preparation, according to Andrew McCarthy.

In the 1990s, the actor and writer, a self-professed “long-ago lapsed Catholic,” walked the route from Saint Jean Pied-de-Port, France , crossing the Pyrenees mountains, and arriving 500 miles later in Santiago de Compostela, Spain . Halfway through, McCarthy had a life-changing moment when he broke down sobbing in the middle of a field, realizing that fear had dominated his life, a story he retells in his book The Longest Way Home . McCarthy returned to Spain in 2021 to walk the Camino again with his then-19-year-old son, which resulted in his latest book, Walking with Sam .

( Here are three ways to plan a Camino de Santiago hiking pilgrimage . )

So, what is it about this path that is so compelling? “I find walking a powerful thing,” says McCarthy. “It’s the natural rhythm at which we are meant to process things.”

His advice? “Go! Buy your ticket and go within a week. The beauty of the Camino is that it requires no preparation, just a good pair of walking shoes.”

The 12 Best Places for Adventure Travel Holidays (TOP TRIPS in 2024)

Adventure is good. Adventure says a lot about who we are as people. How we interact with it, the kind of adventure we seek, our reasons for doing it… these things woven together tell a story .

The adventure keeps us alive – without it, we stagnate . We work our 9 to 5 so we can come home afterwards, cook dinner, binge Netflix on the couch with our significant other, and then – if we’re lucky and not too tired – a banal quickie before we hit the sack.

Even writing that paragraph gave me an existential crisis .

So what’s the remedy to all that deep-seated nihilistic fear and loathing? Quite simply, an adventure! Nature, adrenaline, dicking around and almost falling off mountaintops: now you’re really living!

So, you’re considering some good ol’ travel adventures. Well, this is the list for you: the 12 best places for an adventure travel holiday . It’s also quite a good list if I do say so myself; at least one offering from every continent!

The activities vary, the environments vary, the budgets vary but the feeling of truly being alive remains the same among these adventure tourism destinations. These are the bucket list trips of a lifetime!

To, you know… distract you from the gnawing meaninglessness of existence.

The 12 Best Places for an Adventure Travel Holiday

What is adventure tourism, safety and ethics of adventure travel, it’s time to go to the best places for adventure travel holidays.

Alright, we’re jumping right into it… the good stuff! The best places for adventure travel across the seven continents!

After the mega-list we’ll get into some nitty-gritty stuff but today I want to give you your dessert before your broccoli. The 12 best places for adventure travel straight off the bat!

They may not necessarily be the most adventurous countries (depending on your perception of ‘adventurous’) but then some, I’d argue, are pretty far out. That’s what I’m saying: we got something for everyone! It’s like Baskin Robbins if Baskin Robbins only had 12 flavours.

Bah, enough loose metaphors – it’s time for the 12 best places for adventure travel – starting with the best!

Introducing the best hostel EVER!

travelling adventure

Hell yeah, you heard right! There are many great places in Indonesia, but none of them can live up to Tribal Bali .

A unique coworking hostel for those that want to travel the world while working from their laptops. Make use of the massive open-air coworking spaces and sip on delicious coffee. If you need a quick screen break, just take a refreshing dip in the infinity pool or grab a drink at the bar.

Need more work inspiration? Staying at a digital nomad-friendly hostel is a really smart way to get more done whilst still enjoying the social life of travelling… Mingle, share ideas, brainstorm, make connections and find your tribe at Tribal Bali!

#1 Pakistan: The Best Place for Adventure Travel that Makes People Go, “You’re going where!?”

I bet you weren’t expecting this to make the list of the best places for adventure travel holidays!

Yep, let’s talk Pakistan. And before we do, you’re gonna have to leave all your stigmas at the door (along with your shoes, thank you very much)!

Pakistan is one of those places where you’re taking adventure tourism to the next level. It drops a lot of the ‘tourism’ in the process. If your idea of the best adventure holiday is a lot of beautiful nature with a lot of friendly, inquisitive people, it’s worth flying in the face of the status quo and travelling to Pakistan. I mean, that’s the whole point of a travel adventure, right?

You’ll find a lot of trekking in Pakistan with something for everyone. If you’re an avid trekker, the Karakoram range is magnificent and a true feat to experience. There are also more chill day hikes – and then there’s the 18-day trek to the K2 base camp (the second-highest mountain in the world).

snow lake adventure holiday destination

You can try going it solo to discover one of the most adventurous countries in the world all by your lonesome. There is certainly some solitude and epic adventure waiting for you!

Even adventure travel is sometimes better shared though!

#2 New Zealand: Adventure Travel With a Bit of Everything!

Time for something a little more standard but no-less downright gorgeous! The good thing about adventure travel in New Zealand is that you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck. It’s like seven countries in one neat little package.

Ice-capped mountains? Check. Petrified forests? Check. Prehistoric coastline? Check. Uninhabited fjords? Check.

And that’s just found while road tripping the South Island !

New Zealand’s adventure tourism options have a flavour for everyone!

The Great Walks offer multiple levels of trekking from the well-worn Abel Tasman to the near-undisturbed Stewart Island. Or, you know, you could just walk the entirety of New Zealand – I met a dude that did it without shoes. That’s pretty metal.

Roys Peak Track, New Zealand

But where do you go in New Zealand for the best overall adventure holiday? Easy one, man. You backpack Queenstown : the go-to for adventure travel sports and activities in New Zealand.

You’ve got beautiful weather on the lake in the summer months. Then, come winter, all the snow bums roll in for the powder season. A year-long travel adventure backpacking epicentre!

So what other adventure activities are there? It’s mega-famous for bungy jumping, ziplining, or you can book a skydiving tour. Honestly, it’s one of the most beautiful places in the world to do it.

Oh, and if you get bored, beautiful, darling Wanaka is about an hour’s drive away… and it’s way better!

#3 Nepal: Holy Mountains and a Booming Adventure Tourism Industry

The past decade has seen near-consistent growth in tourist arrivals to Nepal.

How come? Hmm, I can’t be certain but it may have something to do with the Himalayas… Nepal is the ‘roof of the world’ after all.

So what type of adventure tourism can you expect from Nepal? Well, again, it’s the Himalayan Mountains… so… a lot of mountaineering. Mind you, this is the final-boss-level mountaineering I’m talking about. The proper hardcore deal.

However, Mount Everest is full of garbage and Nepal is struggling to keep up with its tourism. We’ll cover being a responsible tourist later on, but while we’re talking about Nepal, trek something other than Mt Everest.

The Himilayan mountains seen from a tent

You can disappear (safely) into the Annapurna range . This epic trekking loop strikes a nice balance between being both culturally authentic and tourist accessible. But pick your timing right: outside peak season but close to the cusp for the best of both worlds.

Alternatively, just pick a direction and start walking. The further out you get to where the whiteys don’t go, the more spectacular and strange Nepal becomes. The chaos of India slowed down by the pace of mountain life.

I’ve even heard whispers of a pristine ancient lake too; they say… Rara .

And then there is travelling Pokhara . Pokhara, in many ways, is like Queenstown. Only it’s slower, it’s more chill, and you smoke hash instead of greenery.

There’s a lot of adventure tourism activities around Pokhara now (as the industry has grown). You can learn to Paraglide , go trekking, and there’s some dope rafting around too.

#4 Costa Rica: Adventure Travel that’s Pura Vida

Costa Rica – the birthplace of the zipline. So, now you know number one on your list of adventure activities to do in Costa Rica.

Backpacking Costa Rica has got a lot to offer the adventure traveller: jungles, beaches, volcanoes. The nature in Costa Rica is one of the reasons that Costa Rica has remained one of the world’s best places for adventure travel for so long.

Its natural magnetism to travellers and ex-pats alike has made Costa Rica both a fantastic and varied place to travel. It’s also caused its prices to rise and become one of the more expensive choices for adventure holidays you can take while travelling Central America .

The trade-off? It’s the goddamn birthplace of the zipline, remember?

The famous Costa Rica Zipline and the birth of the canopy-surfing adventure tourism

Picture this: you’re cruising along at a cool 70km/hr. Beneath you, the rippling greens of the jungle canopy blur together. At the end of the line, a crew of trained squirrel monkeys await your arrival, a chilled refresco and caramel flan in hand. Ok, I made that last bit up (but I’m a writer , don’t you know).

La Fortuna is your best destination for adventure tourism in Costa Rica. It’s a small town close to the piercing Arenal Volcano (which is an absolutely magnificent creature). In the area, you’ll find hiking, canyoning, rafting, and of course, the jungle zipline!

And, if you’re more of a beach person, head towards Costa Rica’s coast for snorkelling and scuba diving action.

#5 USA: The Adventure Travel MECCA

Heading north from Central America takes us to… North America. Yeah, that makes sense.

What will you find while exploring the USA?

A lot of flag-waving patriots who chase tornadoes and pull their own teeth out on account of the lack of medical insurance. Anyway, other than that, you’ll find SO MUCH epic, adventure travel!

The big, bold, and beautiful US of A is chock full of adventurous places to visit .

Moab is one of the best places for adventure travel in the USA

So, where to travel for adventures in the USA? God, what do you like? Canyons, mountains, coasts, great lakes, rivers, prairies… it’s all there.

  • Moab (Utah) takes the top pick as one of the best places for an adventure vacation in the USA. It is the go-to for mountain biking with courses ranging from the beginner all the way up to the ‘holy shit, I might die’ . You’ll also find heaps of sweet rafting, ATV driving, horseback riding… it’s an adrenaline junkie’s desert playground!
  • Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming) has hiking and hot springs. That’s a no brainer! Anywhere that has hot springs is going to make for a top trip.
  • Colorado: home of the Rocky Mountains! What do you get there? Mate, were you not listening; I just told you – the Rocky Mountains! Hikes, rock climbing, and legal bud; it may just be heaven-on-earth.
  • Yosemite National Park, California : is the impossible-to-not-mention choice. The undisputed king of the USA’s national parks featuring the truly staggering peaks of free-soloing ‘What’s a rope?’ Alex Honnold fame.

travelling adventure

The USA is  blisteringly beautiful. It’s also blisteringly expensive! Visiting two national parks in day can run you $70+ in entry fees.

Orrrr… you kick those entry fees to the curb, buy an annual ‘America the Beautiful Pass’ for $79.99,  and get unlimited access to ALL 2000+ federally managed sites in the States totally FREE!

You do the math. 😉

#6 Argentina: Adventure Travel at the End of the World

If you head in the other direction from Central America (by which I mean south) you get to travelling South America . That also makes sense.

There are a lot of kick-ass destinations for adventure trips in South America: Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador jump to mind. But Argentina has Patagonia. And I’m all about those harsh, sparsely populated wildernesses.

This idea for adventure travel is not for the faint of heart – you’re heading into challenging terrain. Look at a map of Argentina. You’re nearly at the bottom of the world. But challenging is the whole point, right?

An adventure holiday in argentina

And backpacking Patagonia is only one region of Argentina you need to explore. It’s a big damn country with a lot of cool places to see (the Ibera Wetlands come to mind).

Argentina is so big and so damn gorgeous that it’s picking up steam as one of the best places for adventure travel in a van. Van life is preferred by many scroungy vagabonds – because a van makes perfect sense for an adventure vacation on a budget.

The northernmost point to the southernmost point of the land at the end of the world… now that’s a journey idea!

#7 Canada: Adventure Travel With a Dash of Solitude

Since we’re talking about vast, harsh, sparsely populated wildernesses, we should talk about Canada. You’ve got a lot of chill places and cool cities in Canada ( like Vancouver )… and then you head into the great outdoors and oh wow!

It’s mega pretty .

What kind of extreme adventure vacations can you get up to in Canada? Well… that depends on how extreme you’re willing to go.

For something fun but with a low chance of death, there’s skiing and snowboarding at a resort such as Whistler. Hit the slopes and then get all the perks of a ski-town: loud parties and hordes of drunk Australians. Don’t worry, we’ve got awesome hostel suggestions for budget adventurers too!

Oh, you wanted something with a high chance of death? Sorry, I misheard you. How about ice-climbing UP A FROZEN WATERFALL! How’s that for an extreme adventure vacation? It’s your very own Tom Cruise movie!

Climbing an ice waterfall is an ultimate bucket list idea

Banff is one of your best adventure travel destinations in Canada. You’ll find the aforementioned ice-climbing there (yesssss) plus a bunch of other cool shit: national parks to adventure in , hot springs, and skiing.

North from Banff (and not too far by Canadian standards) is Jasper National Park with more wilderness and hikes. If it’s solitude that you’re seeking in your adventure travels, then travelling the Canadian wilderness has what you need.

Just watch out for bears. Although, they make a spray for that.

travelling adventure

Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….

These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the  real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.

Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…

#8 Mongolia: Adventure Travel With The OG Nomads

This is one of the best adventure holidays in Asia as far as I’m concerned. It’s a long-time dream of mine: to ride a horse on the plains of Mongolia. I haven’t done it yet – timing is important – so I’m recommending you to do it.

Why? Well, if you want to truly call yourself a nomad, then you gotta be a damn nomad! You need a horse on the plateaus of Mongolia. You need to search for water for your travelling companion and shoot at horse thieves with your bow.

I met a good dude in New Zealand. He’d never ridden a horse before and he was curious, so he went to Mongolia and made his very own horseback adventure tour. Now that is bad-ass!

travelling adventure

Seriously though, Mongolia is a country of beautiful yet unforgiving terrain and the Mongolian people have unlocked its secrets, able to live nomadically and tend livestock amongst its deserts, plains, and hills. It’s also smack-bang between Russia and China so wherever you go, you’ll be off the beaten track .

If you’re interested in Mongolian culture, I’d recommend being there in October. Every year in the first week of October is the Golden Eagle Festival where you can see skill contests in archery, wrestling and eagle hunting. Not hunting eagles but hunting with eagles –  they’re the OG nomads, man!

#9 China: The Other Best Place for Adventure Travel that Makes People Say, “You went where!?”

Good ol’ communist China: the antithesis to the American Dream. It’s like going to another planet so, if you can’t get ‘off the beaten track’ there, you’re probably doing something wrong. China is a hit with backpackers in search of adventure!

You’ll almost always be mildly-to-noticeably uncomfortable which makes for some of the most character-building adventure holidays for both single travellers and couples. It’s also a solid destination choice for a cheap adventure holiday. It’s not as cheap as, say, Nepal, but it’s cheaper than most people realise (especially if you’re camping in nature ).

Mount Huashan is the top trips in China's adventure tourism

So, what kind of adventure activities await in China? Well, trekking galore; I’ve heard the Great Wall is kind of long and, yup, you can camp on it! Or you can visit Tiger Leaping Gorge or Mount Huashan which is considered one of the most dangerous hiking trails in the world. Deadly hiking in China – now that’s an extreme adventure vacation!

I mean, hell, just buy a bicycle and see how far you can get across the supreme landscape. It’s China, you’re pretty much guaranteed an adventure no matter where you go!

#10 Zimbabwe: Adventure Travel With a Touch of Sun and Crocodiles

There’s three more entries on our list and three more continents to explore. Let’s make a shift over to Africa now… to Zimbabwe! Africa is one hell of a trip that will always make you laugh!

If we’re talking Zimbabwe adventures, we’re talking Victoria Falls. Oh, the falls? They’re drop-dead breathtakingly ‘life is beautiful’ gorgeous. Absolutely stunning.

Victoria Falls is a hotspot for adventure travel in Africa

Victoria Falls has built itself up as the best adventure holiday destination in Africa. You’ll find a huge scope of adventure activities in Victoria Falls including bungy-jumping, gorge-swinging, flying foxes, rapid rafting (I’m talking those infamous grade V and VI options), and cage diving with crocodiles. Diving with crocs… it’s an adrenaline junkie’s paradise!

It’s also warm – with swimming involved! It’s a nice change of pace from the freezing-cold murderous wildernesses I keep sending you to (just wait for the last two entries on this list, muahahaha)!

And since you’re in Zimbabwe (and how often do you end up over that way, realistically) maybe explore the rest of the country. Victoria Falls is surrounded by gorgeous national parks and there are plenty of adventure safari tours to partake in.

grayl geopress filter bottle

Drink water from ANYWHERE. The Grayl Geopress is the worlds leading filtered water bottle protecting you from all manner of waterborne nasties.

Single-use plastic bottles are a MASSIVE threat to marine life. Be a part of the solution and travel with a filter water bottle. Save money and the environment!

We’ve tested the Geopress  rigorously  from the icy heights of Pakistan to the tropical jungles of Bali, and can confirm: it’s the best water bottle you’ll ever buy!

#11 Scandinavia: Adventure Travel With Freedom to Roaaaaam

Right, let’s talk about adventure holidays you can have while backpacking Europe. Are we talking about the stunning (and warm) Amalfi Coast or the tranquil (and warm) beaches of Portugal? Hah, nope, it’s back to freezing your tits off. Apparently, adventure is best served cold.

I think the reasons to send you to Scandinavia should be relatively obvious: a massive and untamed wilderness of eclectic beauty that will bitchslap you upside the face if you don’t respect it. Just my type. 😉

But, there’s another reason: something called “freedom to roam” . Laws vary by location and discussions on environmental impact is important but it is, I feel, the way adventure travel should be.

Every human has the right to disappear into nature and just be. Just be without electricity, and goddamn Wi-Fi, and the white noise of the world. Time to just spend some time without your phone, and straight-up forest bathing.

Norway Travel Restrictions - On the Ground in the Norway

So if you’re looking for the best places to escape alone, the Scandinavian/Nordic countries have got you covered. If you’re also looking for the best adventure holidays for couples, you should consider Scandinavia because everybody knows that disappearing into the wilderness for weeks at a time is better with someone that lets you touch their butt.

Where are you going? Wherever you damn well please, that’s my point. Take a compass. And if you don’t feel like walking then saddle up a reindeer – and go disappear… safely. Light a campfire (legally) and watch the stars and the lights in the northern sky which no man owns no matter how much they wish they did.

#12 Antarctica: The Final Boss of Your Adventure Travels

I said we were going to all seven continents, right? I also said adventure is best served cold.

Yes, you can do adventure travel in Antarctica. Yes, it is more expensive than anything else on this list and no you can’t go unguided unless you break away from your tour group ( NOT a good idea). This is about the most extreme adventure trip you can take until Elon Musk sorts out that whole space/moon tourism thing. But, let’s be real, do we really want him to?

Antarctica rounds of 7 continents of best places for adventure travel

Most Antarctica tours involve a cruise and will take you to and around parts of the continent – usually, the Antarctic peninsula which is pretty damn close to Argentina (hence the ‘land at the end of the world’ thing). Some of them will also take you to the Falkland Islands which are super damn pretty.

Now, you could always shore up your boat life skills and test the hell out of yourself and your crew by sailing there…

Either way, you can expect a lot of wildlife watching as well as some adventure activities alongside such as kayaking, scuba diving, and paddle-boarding. Notice how all those activities had some relation to the freezing-cold water…

Yep, that’s what to expect from Antarctica: desolation, magnificence, and feeling permanently cold all the time. But hot damn if she’s not gorgeous.

packable travel medical kit

Things go wrong on the road ALL THE TIME. Be prepared for what life throws at you.

Buy an AMK Travel Medical Kit before you head out on your next adventure – don’t be daft!

Now I’m giving you your broccoli. You don’t have to eat it; you do you, man.

Depending on where you look, you’ll find several definitions of adventure tourism. Of course, as we all know, stuffy definitions created by stuffy people don’t often encapsulate the whole truth. But we need to talk about the consequences of these stuffy definitions.

In 1953 Edmund Hillary and Tenzig Norgay were the first ever to summit Mount Everest. Now, just over 65 years later (less than the lifespan of a person) over 8000 people have summited the peak.

Now, there’s something to be said about the advantages and disadvantages of adventure tourism but it doesn’t help with our definition for the purpose of this article. Thus, I’ve decided on three criteria to define adventure travel by:

  • There’s some level of an inherent risk involved i.e. injury or death is increased in likelihood by the activity.
  • The activity revolves around interaction and interplay with nature and the outdoors.
  • There is a market, sub-culture, and level of commercial gain behind the activity.

Rock climbing has taken off internationally as an adventure tourism activity

The adventure activity can be guided or unguided; paid for or free; and range anywhere from death is a slim possibility to ‘Dude, who gets your PlayStation when you die?’ .

But, generally speaking, your best places for adventure travel are going to be marketed as primo adventure tourism holiday destinations. With that comes all the perks and caveats of a place well-worn by tourists.

I’d also like to define the difference between adventure travel and a journey . Hitchhiking across China, walking through the Middle-East, or backpacking around South Africa are all great journeys (and some of my ultimate bucket list ideas), but they’re not adventure travel holidays since they’re not primarily driven by the purpose of tourism. That’s a personal journey, mate!

Types of Adventure Tourism: Hard Adventure Activities

Ok, so seriously, if you want to discuss types of adventure travel, there are lots of ways to break it down and a lot of different sub-categories. That’s the point of my criteria above and my separation of a ‘journey’ and ‘adventure travel’ .

One of my favourite types of journeying (which many would rightfully consider adventure travel) is overland travel (i.e. no planes). However, telling you to start in Japan and finish in Italy without using planes wouldn’t make for a very appealing article. It does, however, make for a seriously dope journey!

Suprise bear on hiking trip for a single man

So, the first category of adventure tourism activities that we’re going to talk about are the ‘hard’ type. Generally, the activities defining this category pose a sizeable risk… of death.

When you’re partaking in these adventure travel ideas, generally it’s better to know what you’re doing to avoid that whole ‘dying young’ thing:

  • Mountaineering
  • Ice Climbing
  • Wingsuiting
  • Base Jumping
  • Bear Fighting

For the record, I made that last one up… I hope…

Types of Adventure Tourism: Soft Adventure Activities

These examples of adventure tourism tend to be less hazardous and generally less dangerous than fighting a bear on an ice mountain while wearing a wingsuit. They have lower overall death-related statistics and your mum isn’t going to complain as much when you tell her what you’ve been up to.

Fishing is both a safer and cheap adventure holiday

It’s worthy to note that most of these activities’ risks can be mitigated by having a professional guide or partaking in some sort of adventure holiday tour. Conversely, the risks can be heightened (i.e. made more fun) by pushing the limits of the activity, often upgrading it to a hard adventure activity. Try rafting some grade VI rapids and you’ll see what I mean:

  • Trekking/hiking/orienteering
  • Kayaking/rafting/canoeing
  • Bungee jumping
  • Skiing/snowboard
  • Mountain biking

Obviously, this far from a complete list but it does give you an idea for what you’re in for when visiting some of the best places in the world for adventure travel… that being a whole lotta fun!

Why Visit the Best Places for Adventure Travel?

Well, I feel I sorta already addressed that with the whole ‘combatting the existential abyss inside your soul’ thing but, yeah, there are other reasons too.

It’s about the challenge. Sure, the advent of the adventure tourism industry mitigates the challenge somewhat (see the above example of Mount Everest) but it’s still an adventure – it’s in the name, after all!

And it’s your adventure! Take it as far and as dangerous as you like. You do you.

It’s about growth : growth through hardship. Learning to take things in stride. Learning that things, most of the time, will be ok. You just have to keep moving.

A man getting dirty on an extreme adventure trip

It’s about getting dirty. Because, everybody knows, being covered in dirt, and mud, and scratches, and leeches makes you appreciate a hot shower just a little more.

And, it’s about contentment. It’s about, one day, when you’re eighty years old and nestled in your rocking chair reminiscing on the life you’ve lived, you can say: “Yeah, that was pretty good. I’d say, overall, I did a good job – 7 out of 10… oh, maybe a 7.5.”

You could think of your travels as a way to create a lifetime reel of memories to spin into epic yarns to bother your grandkids with…

But adventure travel is also about connecting to life and our planet, which, in case you hadn’t heard, is pretty bloody gorgeous.

Right, so that’s your dessert: 12 of the best places for adventure travel across the seven continents of our world. And some damn fine choices too, if I do say so myself!

And you ate your broccoli. Good, I’m proud of you. No, you can’t have a second dessert! But you can have some more broccoli. 😉

So, before you inevitably go and tear it up snowboarding, rafting, or bear fighting, I’d like to touch on a few more things to note. A few practical considerations of the environment, taking care of yourself, and just generally not being a knob-jockey while you’re engaging in your Evel Knievel ways.

Toursim: the Double Edged Sword

This topic is really deserving of (and has many) socio-ecological research papers, but it goes without saying that adventure tourism has an impact. Think about Pokhara in Nepal: what was once considered one of the most mystical places in Nepal is now a bustling city that is known as its ‘tourism capital’.

But, again, think about Pokhara: a city that was once only accessible by foot is now one of the most affluent cities in Nepal. It’s a huge metropolis that garners a large amount of revenue for a developing nation and supplies jobs and a better quality of life for many people. It’s here that you start to wonder: is budget travel ethical?

Pokhara is an example of the effects of adventure tourism in Nepal

Tourism is a double-edged sword and adventure tourism only takes a whetstone to the blade. As per my original definition, it usually entails some form of interaction with the natural environment and, as you may have noticed, it also usually involves some form of interaction with cultures unaccustomed to the West. Which means they are unaccustomed to – let’s say – the ugly side of Western tourism.

So be a good dude; it’s just that simple. Nothing grandiose – just stay aware, be responsible, and be respectful. Be respectful of other cultures and the people there; their sole purpose in life is not to make sure our one-week-itinerary travel adventure trips blows up on the socials.

And be respectful of our environment. It was here long before we were carving it up with snowboards and mountain bikes and it’ll be here long after it’s wiped us all out for carving it up with snowboards and mountain bikes.

Past that, you do you. You know how to be a good human. And if you’re travelling and not being a good human… it’s only a matter of time until someone – local, traveller, or Mama Nature herself – sorts you out.

Travel Insurance for Best Places for Adventure Travel Holidays

Goddamn! All this adventure and far-flung locales and talk of bears – maybe it would be smart to protect yourself with some insurance?

Things do go wrong when you travel, particularly if you’re doing hectic shit in the most hectic corners of the planet.

ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .

They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.

That’s it. The whole list. If you do one of these ultimate bucket list ideas , well done. If you do all 12… geez, dude, legend; you’re a braver human than me.

So, what are my final thoughts on the 12 best adventure holidays in the world? Honestly, I think I’ve touched on all of it already.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re after a cheap adventure holiday, an extreme vacation, or a journey away from where all tours can take you. Just remember, that it’s the adventure that connects us to travel and to life.

Just remember that adventure is awesome. And that it keeps us alive. And that it is these stories that you’ll be telling your grandkids one day. So make them grand and beautiful and dangerous and filled with plot twists.

Tell a good story.

What is adventure travel? It’s the most epic way to see the world! Adventure tourism activities combine tourism with cultural immersion, physical activity, and getting down and dirty in nature—the adrenaline rush is just a bonus.

two people hiking a mountain on adventure tourism activities

What does “adventurous” look like for you?

Adventure travel is the opportunity to explore your favorite destinations while discovering new skills, passions, and lifelong friends. It is physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging in the best way possible. It’s climbing the highest peaks, learning local languages, shredding down powdery mountains, diving deep into history, and plunging headfirst into the depths of the ocean.

If you’re the kind of traveler who loves to push themselves to the limits and collect new experiences, adventure travel is a must on your travel bucket list .

What is adventure travel?

Adventure travel embraces the concept of exploration. Adventure activities often appeal to adrenaline junkies, but you don’t necessarily have to be keen to jump out of an airplane or swim with sharks to be an adventure tourist. Sometimes being in an unfamiliar place and pushing yourself out of your cultural comfort zone can be enough of an adventure in itself!

Adventure tourism activities range from anything that gets your blood pumping to anything that allows full immersion to the local culture. Often, this includes some type of physical activity and the chance to connect with nature, but most of all it’s the opportunity to challenge yourself and push your limits to allow for personal growth and the ultimate travel experience.

What is the importance of adventure tourism?

person posing on hilltop near mayon volcano philippines

You’d be surprised how capable you feel after summiting a mountain!

Adventure tourism offers the opportunity of growth, both for yourself and the destination.

On a personal level, adventure tourism activities are often physically stimulating. They get your blood pumping, endorphins running wild, allowing you to reduce stress, burn calories, and feel a sense of accomplishment.

Adventure travel allows you to connect with nature, improving your mental state so you can feel your best in every sense. And sharing an adventure with locals or other travelers is always the perfect way to bond quickly over incredible experiences and make fast friends.

Not only does adventure tourism benefit our health, but there is an importance of adventure tourism to the local economy. Many of the top destinations for adventure tourism are also some of the poorest countries in the world.

When we take part in adventure activities and eco-tourism , we have the ability to help develop the country’s infrastructure, support local community development, and contribute to eco-initiatives to preserve land and natural resources.

It’s always a good idea to travel with eco-friendly programs and providers that are responsible, sustainable , and who benefit the local community.

TOP AFRICA TRAVEL ADVENTURES

Gorilla trekking is one of the best travel adventures you can do. Not only do you get to experience the beauty of Africa , but also come face to face with the largest primate on the planet.

There are only around 800 gorillas left in the wild and it’s possible to see them in 1 of 3 countries; Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo .

We chose to go gorilla trekking in Rwanda because it is done in Volcanoes National Park. This is also the location of the Dian Fossey gorillas, so if you like history you’ll want to consider this too.

Gorilla Trekking FAQ

The best time to go gorilla trekking in Rwanda is from mid-December to early February or over the long dry season months of June to September. This is when the hiking conditions are the best and the risk of malaria is low.

If you plan your visit during September, try to align it with the dates of the annual Kwitz Izina . A huge festival that celebrates the gorilla conservation efforts and names the previous years baby gorillas.

There are plenty of ways to approach booking your gorilla trekking trip, but the best way is by tour. This will ensure you get one of the highly sought after and limited permits.

We recommend the following tours:

Africa is filled with many top travel adventures and there are few rivers in the world that rival the intensity of the mighty Nile River. As such, it’s home to some of the best white water rafting in the world.

But we won’t lie, rafting this river is intense. You’ll face monster rapids, strong water and no sight of land. Never fear, though, the guides are experienced and ready to show you the adventure of a lifetime.

A successful run on the river will be completed in roughly 6 hours from your departure in Jinja.

Nile River White Water Rafting FAQ

The best time to raft the Nile River in Uganda is truly any time of the year. The water flow is controlled by a dam, so it’s not affected by seasons or by rains.

That said, the rafting is particularly good during Uganda’s dry season. This means that choosing to raft in January to February or June to September will offer warm temperatures and clear skies.

We recommend rafting with Nile River Explorers. They are one of the best rafting companies in Africa and they care about preserving this natural wonder for future generations to experience. They also participate in great outreaches all around Africa like saving the rhinos and additional conservation efforts.

There are a few great places in the world to go wild chimp trekking but one of the most historical and famous locations is in the Gombe Stream National Park where Dr. Jane Goodall conducted her ground-breaking chimpanzee studies.

The park is home to one of the most important chimpanzee research centers in the world. Here visitors not only trek to view the wild chimps but also spend time learning about them ultimately becoming ambassadors of research and conservation.

Gombe Stream National Park is known for its challenging treks but also for its great sightings, which are almost certain.

Wild Chimp Trekking FAQ

The best time to go on a wild Chimpanzee trek is from July to October.

This is when the viewing is at its best and the possibilities of finding them are way higher since it’s the dry season. The chimps also tend to live on the lower slopes of the mountain ridges during this time of the year.

Peak season runs from July to October. During the low season, April to May, most lodges are closed. The wet season runs from November to April and while it is still possible to trek, you’ll want to manage your expectations.

There are plenty of companies that offer chimpanzee trekking in Tanzania but we recommend the outfitter that takes out photographers from National Geographic, Natural World Safaris. A company that is doing more than just pushing tourists to view the wild Chimpanzees.

We recommend the following tour with them:

There are plenty of great locations in the world where you can enjoy a relaxing soak but there’s only one place in the world where you can take a dip right on the edge of the tallest waterfall in the world.

Located right on the edge of the towering Victoria Falls is a naturally formed pool area where, during the right time of the year, visitors can scramble across a rocky wall and enjoy a heart-racing soak in the world’s ultimate infinity pool.

It’s one heck of a view as the mighty Zambezi crashes over the cliffs just feet away from where you are sitting.

Victoria Falls Devil Pools FAQ

The best time to soak in the Victoria Falls Devil Pools is from November to December. This is when the falls are at their lowest and people can do the float of angels.

There have been times where the pools are open in early October and even September due to low water levels.

Just keep in mind if your visiting Zambia or Zimbabwe during the rainy season, Victoria Falls will be impressive but you will not be able to soak in Devil’s Pools.

You can book a tour to soak in the Devil Pools from both the Zimbabwe and Zambia side of Victoria Falls. We did this adventure when we spent 17 weeks Overlanding through Africa from Cape Town to Cario.

Don’t forget to save some time for a helicopter flight over Victoria Falls , too.

Adventure awaits on this thrilling travel adventure where hikers get the chance to trek to the world’s most dangerous volcano. Mount Nyiragongo, also known as General Nyiragongo by the locals, is the world’s most volatile volcano and has been showering the city of Goma with lava and ash for decades.

Your adventure begins early as you have to trek through the bright green jungle-covered mountainside to reach the waist land of lava covered rubble and rocks.

Standing at the rim, you’ll feel mother nature’s greatness as the hot air and gasses brush past you. You’ll peer down into a boiling lava lake where the molten lava is hypnotizing.

Like all of our travel adventures you just don’t get your Instagram photo and go, you spend the night camped out on the crater watching it boil and glow throughout the night. In the early morning you say goodbye and you hike back down into the jungle.

Climbing Nyiragongo Volcano FAQ

The best time to climb Nyiragongo Volcano is from May to September. July is known to be the driest month, followed by June in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

There’s also a short dry period from January to February, which also makes for a great time to make the climb.

The higher regions are always cooler, and the skies are a little clearer than the normal overcast that the DRC sees every day.

Trekking to Nyiragongo Volcano is operated by the Virunga National Park service. It is not possible to take on this adventure independently.

To book this adventure:

Quirimbas Islands in Mozambique

Discover the lesser visited wilderness of Quirimbas National Park and its surrounding islands in Mozambique.

The Quirimbas Islands lie off the North Eastern Mozambique edge located in the Indian Ocean. This archipelago is almost untouched to visitors and has only recently opened up to outside travelers.

Exploring by kayak is the best way to see this region. You’ll wake up on an island every day and then see where turquoise waters take you each day.

Kayak to Quirimbas FAQ

The best time to kayak the Quirimbas Islands on a sea safari is from January to April based on the best weather and sea conditions for paddling.

May to December you have the least chance for rain, but paddling conditions are unpredictable during this time of year and trips are limited due to conditions.

For taking on this travel adventure we recommend going with a tour operator who not just operates amazing trips, but is eco-friendly and truly cares about preserving it for generations to come.

We recommend the following tour:

There’s no other travel adventure like it on Earth, a Serengeti Safari in Tanzania is truly a bucket list adventure for anyone.

Known as one of the best wildlife-viewing destinations in the world, a Serengeti safari is filled with days in search of whatever you can find in the worlds most unspoiled wilderness. You never know what you’ll come across.

Enjoy big cats sunning themselves, wildebeest roaming the plainlands, elephants and hippos playing in the wild rivers. It’s the real world circle of life on display for you to be amazed by and enjoy.

Serengeti Safari FAQ

The Serengeti offers a year-round opportunity of amazing safaris. Many people have their sights on seeing the Great Migration and rightfully so but that isn’t the best time to view all of the animals in the Serengeti. Most avoid the noisy crowds of wildebeest and zebras.

To get the most out of your visit, be sure to plan the right area for the time of your visit. We recommend:

There’re plenty of great safari operators out there but you want to go with one that not only cares about giving you the best possible adventure but also cares about the area and its wildlife.

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a feat that is on many people’s bucket list and rightfully so. It is Africa’s highest mountain and unlike the tallest peaks on other continents, you don’t need special training nor lots of money to conquer the summit.

Your adventure starts at the gates of Kilimanjaro National Park, where thousands of climbers attempt to reach the summit each year.

It is a journey of discovery as this mountain comes to life unlike you have expected nor seen before. You’ll hike through five distinct climate zones that make you feel like you’re traveling from the equator to the North Pole.

Climbing Kilimanjaro FAQ

Due to Mount Kilimanjaro’s location near the equator, it’s an ideal location all year round to climb. However, we do suggest avoiding the rainy season that runs from March to May and November to December.

During this time, you can still attempt to climb Kilimanjaro but the trail conditions tend to be slippery and extremely muddy.

When looking for the best tour for climbing Kilimanjaro you want to look for a tour operator that offers an epic adventure but one that also cares about the locals. One that supports local guides, porters and camps. One that also leads the way in programs not just on the mountain but off the mountain too.

There are plenty of great places to go on a safari in Africa but one of the best for game viewing is in Kruger National Park located in South Africa.

There’s no other park in Africa that offers the density of wildlife that Kruger does while also offering award-winning accommodation and Africa’s best wild game trackers and local guides.

Kruger National Park is also known to be less crowded at sightings, making it more magical for you and those in your safari truck.

Kruger National Park Safari FAQ

Kruger National Park in South Africa is considered a year-round destination, but it does have two distinct seasons for wildlife viewing.

The best time to go on a safari for wildlife viewing is from the end of September to October when the vegetation is low, making animals easier to spot and follow. On top of that, this is when the water sources provide rewarding game viewing.

November to April is another great time to visit Kruger since it’s the rainy season. That means the landscape will be bright green. The wildlife may be harder to spot during this time of the year but the game viewing is still great with young summer-born animals around. It’s also the best time to visit Kruger for bird watching.

For this travel adventure, we recommend going on the Explore Kruger National Park tour with G Adventures.

On this 7-day journey, you’ll track elephants, lions and cheetahs but you will also go out with a researcher from the Cheetah Metapopulation Project that’s part of National Geographic’s Big Cats Initiative.

There’s no other feeling in the world like being face to face with a Great White shark , or two or three, in the cool ocean waters.

Gansbaai, South Africa is known as the Great White shark capital of the world and in this marine wonderland, it’s the safest place to see these apex predators in their natural environment by getting in a shark cage.

Researchers and travelers come to spend their days viewing sharks. If you’re looking for a travel adventure that will get your heart beating, cage diving with these massive sharks is the adventure for you.

You’ll also get an inside look at the conservation efforts and misconceptions about these feared sharks.

Great White Shark Diving FAQ

The best time of the year to view the Great White Sharks in South Africa is between June and September.

This is when the water visibility is the best and it is also when migrating sharks come to spend a few months.

Keep in mind every trip is different, this is wildlife viewing and it is possible to have great viewing throughout the whole year.

For anyone who is looking at marking off this adventure, we recommend doing it with an outfitter who is also leading the way in Great White Shark research.

The White Shark Diving Company offers a premium shark cage diving experience where you can get into a cage, but also spend some time volunteering as a research assistant.

Jump aboard a traditional mokoro canoe and explore one of Africa’s last great natural sanctuaries that’s home to vast concentrations of wildlife.

The Okavango Delta located in Botswana is like no other place in the world. You can expect exciting hippo encounters and adrenaline safaris on foot all led by your local guide.

On a canoe safari in the Okavango , your days will be spent poling through the water and on safari while your nights will be camping under a blanket of intense African stars.

Okavango Delta Canoe Safari FAQ

The Okavango Delta is a great place to visit year-round and the best time to visit the region is from June to August.

This is when the water is at its highest making it easy to navigate. Many animals migrate to the delta during this time of the year which also makes for great wildlife viewing.

Another popular time of the year is from September to October. This is when it’s considered the dry season and animals are easily sighted along its shorelines.

From November to April it’s the rainy season and is considered the best time for bird viewing.

It is possible to experience an Okavango Delta canoe safari on a variety of budgets. You have the option to bush camp, stay at a posh resort and everything in between.

There’s no right or wrong way, so make sure you book what is right for you. No matter what, you’re in for a good adventure.

Discover one of the best hiking destinations in the world, with endless jaw-dropping views and rare wildlife including Gelada Baboons, Wallia lbex and Ethiopian Wolves.

The Simien Mountains National Park is a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site that sees few travelers due to its remoteness in northern Ethiopia.

For those travelers that do make it there, this travel adventure is truly amazing. There will be moments where you will be surrounded by 100’s of wild Gelada Baboons and there will be plenty of rest spots where you’ll say to yourself “the landscape looks to be taken right out of a painting”.

Read about our time trekking in the Simien Mountains here .

Simien Mountains Trekking FAQ

The best time to visit the Simien Mountains is from October to March for the best trekking conditions. This is when the mountains are verdant and very colorful.

From September to November the flowers are in full bloom following the rainy season so the wildlife will be out in force snacking away and it will make for some amazing photos during this time of the year.

For those looking to trek in the Simien Mountains, we suggest joining a 4-day trekking adventure that will show you the best of this area and include the best trails.

For those who are looking to enjoy more of the wonders in Ethiopia, in addition to the Simien Mountains, we suggest the 10 Day Discover Ethiopia trip with G Adventures.

The mighty Zambezi River, located below Victoria Falls, is one of the best white water rafting rivers in the world.

Rafting the Zambezi River offers a thrilling ride down class 3-5 rapids that any traveler can take on if they dare. No previous rafting experience is required and you’ll be accompanied by an experienced river guide.

On this day trip, you go with the flow as the Zambezi River snakes through a 100+ meter gorge where crocodiles are found sunbathing on the rocks.

You’ll take on rapids called Three Ugly Sisters, The Mother Surge and The Washing Machine, to name a few. It will be a wet and wild trip and a travel adventure that anyone visiting Africa should take on.

Rafting the Zambezi River FAQ

The best time to go white water rafting down the Zambezi River is split into two times, low water and high water during the year.

High water runs from February to July when you can raft the river from rapids 11 to 23.

Low water runs from July to mid-February when you can run between rapids 1 to 18. This is the more aggressive route and is extremely fun.

There are a few options for rafting the Zambezi River. Most travelers go on a full-day adventure that consists of six hours on the river and ends with a BBQ overlooking the gorge.

For those looking for more of an experience on this travel adventure, we suggest taking an overnight trip that consists of paddling during the day and sleeping on the shoreline at night. Those trips can range from two days, five days and eight days.

Madagascar is truly an amazing place to travel. This remote island offers a wide range of travel adventures from hiking through amazing landscapes to viewing its endemic wildlife.

One of the most popular animals in Madagascar is the wild Lemurs. Only found on this island, there is a wide variety of them to be found including Indri Lemurs, Borwn Lemurs, Lesser Bamboo Lemurs and even Dwarf Lemurs, to name a few.

Going on a wild Lemur safari is much more than just viewing them in the wild, you go out with an expert naturalist who teaches you about these amazing creatures and also shows you what life in Madagascar is really like.

Lemur Safari FAQ

The best time to visit Madagascar is from April to mid-December but Madagascar is a year-round destination and you can view wild Lemurs year-round.

If you’re looking to photograph and experience the Lemurs at their best, we suggest visiting from October to November. This is when there are baby Lemurs everywhere.

Madagascar is filled with many bucket list travel adventures from viewing Lemurs in the wild to amazing beaches and epic hiking trails.

If you’re looking for a trip where you can experience the whole of Madagascar in addition to the lemurs, we suggest the 14 Day Highlights of Madagascar tour with G Adventures.

If your primary focus is only to view wildlife, we recommend a specialty tour that is wildlife focused. We recommend the Lemurs, Wildlife & Beaches Safari with Natural World Safaris.

TOP ASIA TRAVEL ADVENTURES

Snow Leopards are known as the Ghost of the Himalayas for a good reason. They’re near impossible to spot and almost just as hard to locate. Embarking on a trip to track this elusive creature is an adventure in and of itself.

We won’t lie, even with the employ of the best operators in India, you may still end up skunked. But don’t let this deter you, the experience will be worth it.

These trips take place in the far reaches of North India where you’ll spend 7-10 days in a high altitude, remote environment. You’ll spend your days tracking leopards and your downtime learning about the region.

Snow Leopard Tracking FAQ

The best time to view wild snow leopards in India is from January to March.

This is when the snow leopard viewing is the best since the highest peaks tend to be warmer and the snow starts to melt or be free of snow at the elevations where the snow leopards live and hunt.

Just because there’s no snow does not mean it won’t be cold, though. Days during this period can be cold and nights can drop below -25C.

While in theory you could try to track snow leopards on your own, we strongly advise against this. The conditions are harsh and tracking elusive animals takes a lifetime of skill.

You should absolutely book a reputable company for this adventure.

Turkmenistan is one of the most isolated nations in the world, second behind only North Korea. That said, it holds plenty of adventure for those that are willing to jump through the hoops to travel the country.

The best adventure is traveling deep into the Karakum Desert to be mesmerized by a massive gas spewing sink hole that was lit on fire by the Soviets in 1971 after a failed drilling operation.

There is a permanent yurt camp nearby operated by one of the top companies in the country. If you’re traveling overland along the Silk Road, it’s also possible to tent camp. Be sure to save some time to explore Ashgabat, the bizarre capital , during your trip too.

Gates of Hell FAQ

The best time to camp at the Gates of Hell is during the spring months of April to May and the fall months of September to early November.

The Darvaza Gas Crater is located in the middle of a desert and the region can be uncomfortably hot.

From November – March, you can expect slightly cooler weather, clear skies and almost no other visitors.

It is not possible to visit the country of Turkmenistan without booking a tour with a government authorized operator. They will arrange your visas, documents and itinerary for your visit.

TOP EUROPE TRAVEL ADVENTURES

The Azores is an island group located in the Atlantic Ocean that is politically part of Portugal and Europe . Don’t let that fool you though, these islands are rustic natural wonderlands.

The Azores offer 86 marked trails covering more than 800km on 9 islands. To get the most time on the trails, head to Sao Miguel as it offers 28 trails. It is popular, however, to plan your trip across a couple different islands too.

The ultimate adventure is the 78km Great Route of Santa Maria (GR01SMA). It’s a medium-difficult hike that you’ll need at least 4 days to complete.

Hiking the Azores FAQ

The best time to hike in the Azores is June through August. During this time, temperatures are at their best, there are less cloudy days and fewer rain showers.

This is the only time you will get to experience the Azores at their finest with uninterrupted temperatures and views. Hikers can experience 70-degree daytime temps with little to no rain. This makes for comfortable hiking but also means it is the most popular time to visit the Azores.

Depending on the type of hiking and trip you are planning, you’ll want to weigh the pros/cons of independent travel vs booking a tour. There is no right answer, you’ll need to pick what is best for you.

For those looking to do a longer hike, independent is best. If you’re short on time and/or like the company of other hikers, then booking a tour is best.

TOP MIDDLE EAST TRAVEL ADVENTURES

Egypt is filled with many great travel adventures but one that transports travelers back in time to when the ancient Egyptian Pharaohs ruled the lands is taking a traditional Felucca trip on the Nile.

Known as a floating bed, a Felucca sailing trip is not like a normal cruise down the Nile River. It’s a journey that moves slowly showcasing everything between Aswan and Luxor.

Spend your day relaxing as the felucca moves you downriver, enjoy the sights that you can’t reach on those larger ships (along with having those popular sights to yourself), connect with locals along the shoreline, cool off in the waters of the Nile, all while sleeping under the stars.

Felucca Sailing Trip FAQ

The best time to go on a multi-day felucca trip on the Nile River in Egypt is between October and April.

During these months the weather is not too hot, meaning it will not be unpleasant while you are sailing.

Another good time to sail the Nile River in Egypt is in May or September, this is considered shoulder season.

We recommend the 8 Day Best of Egypt tour offered by G Adventures that hits all of the most popular places in 8 amazing days and also offers a multi-day felucca trip with a local family.

If you have more time, we suggest the 15-day Egypt & Jordan Adventure with G Adventures, which also offers a multi-day felucca trip down the Nile River.

If you plan to travel through Egypt independently, take a look at our in-depth Egypt itinerary for various lengths of stay.

Egypt is a fascinating place to visit and a bucket list trip for anyone. The historical sights are amazing to take in, but you haven’t seen anything until you hop into a hot air balloon basket and take a ride over the Valley of the Kings.

Soaring above the ground, slowly moving, looking down from the heavens upon one of Egypt’s largest historical areas is a travel adventure that every traveler who visits Luxor must do.

It will put everything into a whole new perspective. Read about our first experience (we’ve done it twice!) here .

Valley of the Kings Hot Air Balloon Ride FAQ

The best time to go on a hot air balloon flight over the Valley of the Kings is from September to November and February to April.

Tours are running all year round but during those months the views are the best due to less smog. Keep this in mind as you’re taking a hot air balloon flight over the Valley of the Kings for the views, right?

Looking for more advice on when to visit Egypt? We break it down by month in our Best Time to Visit Egypt guide .

We have done this adventure twice now and each time was amazing.

If you’re traveling independently or have already booked your Egypt trip and it does not include a hot air balloon ride over the Valley of the Kings, we suggest booking in advance.

If you need advice for planning your Egypt itinerary, be sure to check out our personal advice here .

Alternatively, you can book a full itinerary tour of Egypt that includes the option for this adventure and many others.

Travel this ancient path across Morocco that explorers and traders have been crossing for centuries on an epic camel ride across the Sahara Desert .

Sleep under the stars at a remote Berber camp where you’ll spend a memorable night learning and listening to stories.

Watch as the sand dunes change colors as the sun rises over the endless edges of sand as your camel train makes its way across the ridgelines. It’s truly a mesmerizing adventure of a lifetime.

Read about our experience here .

Sahara Camel Safari FAQ

The best time to go on a camel safari adventure in the Sahara Desert is from March to May and from September to November.

This is when you can avoid the extreme heat and you will also miss experiencing the chilling night temperatures.

Camel trekking tours are run throughout the whole year but believe us you don’t want to feel the desert’s heat.

Morocco is a fascinating country and going on a camel trek in the Sahara Desert is just one of the many great travel adventures it offers.

It also offers a rich cultural heritage. That’s why we recommend that you book a broader tour of the country that also includes a camel safari.

If you love to be off the beaten path, like we do, you are going to love this adventure. Just imagine taking a trip across Jordan more than 2,000 years ago twisting and winding across the beautiful red rock landscape ending at an impressive city surrounded by cliffs.

Why not follow that ancient path to Petra instead of taking the over-touristed front door route?

Discover lost sights as you hike Petra’s backdoor while following the Jordan Trail and sleeping under the stars with your local guide.

Trek Petra Back Door FAQ

The best time to trek Petra’s back door is from March to May or from September to November.

This is when hiking weather is the best in Jordan. The days are warm and not too hot. The nights are cool but very pleasant.

Read more about the When to Visit Jordan .

The official “Petra’s Back Door Trek” is one of the best hikes in the world and we suggest doing this hike with Experience Jordan.

If you’d like to spend more time in Jordan before or after your hike, be sure to check out our Ultimate Jordan Itinerary .

There’s plenty of great places around the world to Skydive but one of the best for amazing views is over Dubai.

In the Middle East , you can experience this 13,000-foot heart dropping free-fall with some of the best views of the iconic Palm Jumeirah and the Arabian desert below you.

It’s a skydiving experience unlike anywhere else in the world.

Skydive in Dubai FAQ

The best time to skydive in Dubai is all year round. That’s one of the magical things about their destination, unlike other places in the world that are often dependent on seasons.

We suggest booking this travel adventure right with Sky Dive Dubai .

They offer a wide range of jump packages. We also always go with the photo package and so should you!

TOP SOUTH AMERICA TRAVEL ADVENTURES

Located in the very southern part of South America , Patagonia is an adventurers paradise. Stretching across both Argentina and Chile, with the Andes Mountains splitting the region, you’ll find some of the best hiking in the world here.

In Argentina, you’ll want to head for El Chalten and set off on the Basecamps Trek . This hike offers the famed Fitz Roy, Cerro Torre and views of the Southern Patagonia Ice Field. You need a minimum of 5 days for this trek and can easily extend it to see more.

In Chile, you’ll want to consider the famous W Trek or its big brother, the O Trek. The W requires 5 days and hits the major highlights of the area. The O trek offers the W with a 3-5 day extension into the backcountry.

Patagonia Trekking FAQ

The best time to go hiking in Patagonia is from October to early March. That is when it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere. This is also the high season and hikers arrive in droves to take on this top travel adventure.

The shoulder seasons from September to November and March to May offer way fewer hikers and lower hotel rates but you’ll need to be vigilant and well-prepared to enjoy your trip. You’ll experience the notorious winds and temperamental weather.

It is winter from June to August in Patagonia and hiking during this time of the year is not recommended.

Plenty of people flock to both Argentina and Chile to hike independently. This can be a good option if you’re going out for day hikes or shorter hikes near the front country. All camping arrangements should be made at least a season in advance.

For those looking to do a longer hike or wanting to head into the backcountry, you absolutely should hire an operator that offers a competent mountain guide.

i culdnt find any better travel insights than this , thanks a bunch

wow, thanks for putting this piece of information together

Thank you Dave and Deb for sharing this great article. Me and my wife We love travelling and when we not travelling, we can watch someone else travelling…)

An indeed insightful collection of travel youtube channels one would wish to watch.

Thank you very much theplanetd.com to telling us about inspiring travel channel.

This Guy “Indigo Traveller” is really a worthy mention. Gives us an insight into North Korea

Way late to the game but I’d recommend Indigo Traveller. He puts out lots of great content, goes to a number of less poplar destinations (including NK), and seems like a genuinely awesome guy to boot.

Check out Chasing Everywhere! She travel the world full time and makes videos of unique places she finds. Really beautiful drone footage and great tips and tricks! youtube.com/chasingeverywhere

Thanks for letting us know. We’ll definitely check them out! This post is a year or so old, so it is time to update it for sure. Cheers Deb

Hey there! When/if you update your YouTube adventure travels to watch list, maybe consider QE Adventures (short for Quinn and Ethan Adventures).

These teenage brothers are skilled videographers and editors and personably narrate their family friendly high adventures in a style that makes audiences wish they’d come along. It’s one of the few channels with videos from the teenage travelers’ perspectives.

Thanks for sharing your channel. I’ll be sure to check it out and all the best to you!

Hi, Dave and Deb.

Have to say a relay wonderful blog 🙂 Something similar what we have started our self, but we are aiming for local travel experience in our small but very beautiful country Lithuania. As I see you haven’t been here. You are very very welcomed here. Although we are small but that does not mean we don’t have anything to show 🙂 Would be super so see your experience of our countr here 🙂

Cheers, Auste and Justas @ TravelingLithuania

Thanks! We’d love to come to Lithuania in the near future.

What is with the popularity contest? This is the same boring list that everyone publishes. I’m so tired of seeing the same people on these lists, two of whom should not be included!

You are more than welcome to add some names. We asked if anyone had someone to add. So put them on the list. These are the people we follow and enjoy. Also, there is another list that Christine wrote for us just before we compiled this one. that we talked about at the beginning of this blog post. (if you read it) And the reason we decided to do a part two. Sorry if you are not on it, I am not familiar with your videos, but I’ll take a look. I don’t know everyone out there. But I try.

Ah, I just went and took a look at your YouTube travel channel and see that you haven’t posted in two years. That would be the reason I hadn’t thought of you. Good luck if you start posting again. PS, I deleted your comment made under the John Doe email address as I see it is from the same IP address as you, (within minutes of each other) and nobody needs to read a second complaint saying the same thing by you under a pseudonym. But I left yours up because I feel that people have a right to their opinion. Cheers!

Great collection, getting entertained and inspired to travel. Thanks

Amazing collection of channels here! I really dig the aggregation and attribution going on. Thanks for sharing these channels with us!

Thanks for the recommendations, I will check these out!

So my channel isn’t quite as robust as many of the ones mentioned here, but it does highlight a part of the world that none of these Youtube channels even go near. Check it out! I’d love to hear your feedback.

Xinjiang | FarWestChina Youtube Channel

An enthusiastic transplant from the East Coast, Michael Zocco loves spreading joy about Austin, Texas, as a fantastic running city. “It’s a very special community,” says the co-city lead for the Endorphin Running Club, Austin Area. Zocco and his co-lead, Makayla Bassi, host group runs every Monday evening and occasionally other weekdays, plus long runs on Saturdays. Whatever the day, the message remains one of inclusivity and positivity through running.

“Our goal,” says Zocco, “is to expand as much as possible, where we can get people from all different paces and experience levels to be able to share that same space: endorphins.”

Zocco says he loves how other running groups and clubs around town offer group runs throughout each week. “That makes Austin so special,” he says.

The majority of runners in Austin head to the multiuse trail around Lady Bird Lake, which is actually a segment of the Colorado River. Teeming with runners and other recreationalists, the ten miles of smooth path along the waterfront is a testament to Austin’s health-and-fitness-loving vibe.

Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail : While the official name for this ten-mile path around Lady Bird Lake is long, the trail that circumnavigates a dammed section of the Colorado River is casually referred to as Lady Bird or the Lake Trail. What makes this highly trafficked route special, Zocco says, is how it allows runners to connect with each other. “You realize there are a lot of people who care about the same things you do,” he says. “And for everyone who loves recording their runs, it’s a perfect ten-mile loop, so it’s great for training.”

Congress Street : Running on this 1.5-mile road between Lady Bird Lake to the Texas State Capitol is “just super iconic,” says Zocco. “People do out-and-backs up and down Congress for the city scenery.”

Tejas State Park Trail System : Just outside the city, in the Texas Hill Country, is Tejas, home to trail races and ultramarathons. The terrain is flat but beautiful—and peaceful. “You can hear a pin drop there,” says Zocco.

More options: The Barton Creek Greenbelt heads just over seven miles past limestone cliffs and the creek. For a bit of rugged terrain in the city, the Shoal Creek Hike and Bike Trail veers off Lady Bird Lake for three miles. And don’t miss Barton Springs , a pristine natural spring connected to Lady Bird Lake that welcomes swimmers year-round—summer group runs often start and finish there, and runners take a dip to cool down afterward.

Ascension Seton Austin Marathon : With a full marathon, plus a half and a 5K, Austin Marathon weekend each February is “like the Super Bowl of the running community,” says Zocco. “The visibility of running, of health and wellness in general, is at an all-time high that weekend,” he says, “and everyone comes out to either run or support the event.”

3M Half Marathon : Taking place every January, this half marathon drops more than 300 feet in elevation from start to finish. “A lot of people like to PR that race,” says Zocco. “It’s a special event.”

Decker Challenge : This event is in its 45th year and features a half marathon, 5K, and kids’ mile. The half wraps around Decker Lake on hilly roads, serving as a hearty training run for those working toward a spring marathon.

More Options: The Zilker Relays , held in Zilker Metropolitan Park, bring together teams of four, with each team member running 2.5 miles. The Austin Distance Challenge kicks off in September with the CASA Superhero 5K and leads up to February’s Ascension Seton Austin Marathon and Half Marathon. Many runners sign up for all of the monthly events, earning perks like a Distance Den bag drop and snack area post-race, plus a special all-event finisher’s jacket.

Austin, Texas

Endorphins Running : Part of the nationwide group, this chapter meets for weekly runs led by Zocco and/or Bassi to celebrate community while running along Lady Bird Lake.

Your Mother’s Run Crew : Hosting group runs open to all paces, this female-led club also connects its members to other running events throughout Austin.

Austin Runners Club : This club for all ages and paces organizes group runs and a host of events, including the Daisy 5K, the Decker Challenge Half Marathon, the Austin Distance Challenge, and the Zilker Relays.

Fleet Feet Austin Downtown : With locations at Circle C, Gateway, and Seaholm, Fleet Feet Austin provides shoe fittings and apparel, “family-like” training, and group run sessions.

The Loop Running Supply : Just off the path around Lady Bird Lake, this store hosts group runs, gait analysis, and nutrition consultations, plus a curated selection of fashion-forward running footwear, apparel, and accessories.

Ready to Run : This locally owned shop, located in the Far West Retail Center, specializes in gait analysis and shoe fittings.

Independent since 1906,  New Balance  empowers people through sport and craftsmanship to create positive change in communities around the world.

5 amazing holidays to Japan for an unforgettable adventure

Considering a once-in-a-lifetime Japan holiday? Look no further with these magnificent options

a shot of famous red pagoda, chureto and mt fuji

While the country's big-hitting cities such as spiritual Kyoto, cosmopolitan Osaka and vibrant Tokyo, Japan's capital and a popular springboard for Mount Fuji, are all must-sees, there are the sunny southern islands of Japan to discover too. With breath-taking beaches and a slower pace of life, they're the ideal spot for a more leisurely trip. And then there are the Japanese Alps, vast and verdant, and a hugely popular choice for a Japan skiing holiday.

While you need to consider where you'd like to visit on your epic Japan adventure, there's also the case of how . Flights go direct from London to Tokyo, but when it comes to choosing how to traverse this incredible country there are numerous options – from guided coach tours to luxury cruises.

For a helping hand with where to start, we've rounded up some of our favourite ways to discover Japan, including a group tour across the Japanese Alps , a 17-day cruise during beautiful cherry blossom season, and an indulgent inclusive break in sun-drenched Okinawa.

A tour of Japan's essential highlights

aerial view by drone of mount fuji at kawaguchiko lake, yamanashi, japan fujisan on sunrise

Embark on this thrilling 13-day roundtrip from Tokyo, which showcases the magical, ancient heritage of Japan as well as its futuristic, neon-lit metropolises. This guided tour, which includes coach travel and hotel accommodation, will give you plenty of time to soak up the colour and culture of Japan's capital, which boasts the bustling shopping district of Ginza, vivid Harajuku, iridescent Akihabara electric town, and world-famous Meiji Shrine in Shibuya, the commercial district.

Beyond Tokyo, you'll visit majestic Mount Fiji, Japan's tallest peak; ride the Shinkansen, the high-speed bullet train; see the resident deer in the city of Nara; spend the day in Hiroshima, which has been rebuilt into an attractive, modern city; and have the chance to stay in a ryokan , a typical Japanese inn, in Kyoto. This accessible and fully-organised tour covers all the essentials and more.

Join us on the Good Housekeeping 13-day Japan tour in August 2024.

A cruise in beautiful cherry blossom season

japan's earliest cheery blossom in okinawa

One of the biggest draws to Japan is undeniably its picturesque cherry blossom season and the custom of hanami , admiring the beauty of it. Every spring, millions of locals and visitors alike patiently wait for the first sakura (the Japanese term for cherry blossom) buds to bloom, showing off their delicate, baby pink-hued petals. The abundance of blossom flowering is celebrated with festivals, picnics and the eating of seasonal, sakura-themed delicacies.

If experiencing this springtime phenomenon is on your bucket list, then this 17-day cruise in Japan is for you. While giving you the opportunity to catch the cherry blossom in cities like Tokyo and Osaka, the leisurely sailing with Holland America enables you to see plenty more of Japan, too. Other port stops include Kagoshima, Nagasaki, Aomori and the lively, karaoke-loving city of Busan in South Korea. And all of this is without mentioning the incredible entertainment, food and bars onboard your ship, of course.

Embark on a 17-day cherry blossom cruise around Japan with Good Housekeeping in 2025.

A jaunt through the Japanese Alps with plenty of tradition

reflection of farmhouses with trees and landscape in background

While this group tour ticks off the unmissable cities of Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Nara, it takes its guests on a journey through the beautiful Japanese Alps, a series of mountain ranges on the island of Honshu. This mountainous region is home to an abundance of picturesque cities and towns, all offering a glimpse into Japan's rural life. On this 13-day tour you'll visit the pretty city of Takayama, which brims with Edo Period houses, food and craft markets and traditional restaurants.

You'll also get the chance to wander the village of Shirakawago, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its thatched roof farmhouses that are said to resemble the praying hands of Buddhist monks. Along with admiring gorgeous scenery, you'll have the chance to get on hands-on with activities such as miso-making, washi paper-making, gold leaf crafting and origami. If you're craving a taste of traditional Japan, you'll find bags of it on this brilliantly-curated trip.

Explore the Japanese Alps with Good Housekeeping in 2024 or 2025.

A city break in Tokyo, Japan's energetic capital

crowds of people walking among illuminated neon signs on the streets of tokyo, japan

If you've got limited time or would prefer to dedicate your trip to just one destination in Japan, then Tokyo is the answer. Known as Edo until 1868, the Japanese capital is the world's most populous city and thus it's a melting pot of activity, culture and cuisines. As city breaks go, you'll be spoilt for choice here: see the Imperial Palace and many landscaped gardens (we like Koishikawa Korakuen and Hama Rikyu) in central Tokyo, the museums and towering Skytree viewing platform for city-wide views in northern Tokyo, and the busy shopping and entertainment districts of Shibuya, Shinjuku and Harajuku in the west.

For easy access to all of this (and so much more) it's best to base yourself centrally, and a hotel would give you the benefit of a helpful concierge to offer recommendations, book transfers and advise on transport throughout your trip. In a city with so much to offer, a bit of local knowledge goes a long way.

Plan a Tokyo city break British Airways, where you can book flights and hotels as a package.

A relaxing all-inclusive holiday in Okinawa

the anchored boats are aligned at the seashore and on the emerald green water of the sea shot at kabira bay, ishigaki island, okinawa, japan on the morning of a fine day

The idyllic island of Ishigaki is part of the Okinawa Prefecture in southern Japan, where the climate is tropical and the weather is warm and humid all year round. It's here that you'll find Club Med's Kabira Ishigaki resort , perched on the edge of the Kabira peninsula with endless views of the turquoise ocean ahead. A family-friendly resort, Kabira Ishigaki is the ideal way to see Japan with a hearty side of rest and relaxation. You can lounge around the freshwater pool and unwind with a treatment in the spa, or, on days where you can muster the energy, try your hand at windsurfing or kayaking in the crystal-clear sea.

The ocean is sacred here, as it's home to manta rays and other marine life, and guests wanting to learn more about life under the water's surface can book eco-friendly snorkelling tours or day trips to nearby islands. There's the chance to experience local culture on dry land too, as guests can take part in sanshin lessons (an Okinawan musical instrument that's similar to a banjo) and sample Okinawan flavours with a selection of traditional dishes, all served in a restaurant that offers 180-degree sea views. Sounds like paradise to us...

Soak up the sun, sand and sea of southern Japan at Club Med's Kabira Ishigaki resort.

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

travelling adventure

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

travelling adventure

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

travelling adventure

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

travelling adventure

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

travelling adventure

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

travelling adventure

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

travelling adventure

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

How Orlando Bloom’s Buddhist faith guides his new adventure show

In Peacock’s new travel adventure show, “ Orlando Bloom: To the Edge ,” the Hollywood heartthrob takes viewers on a captivating journey as he tackles three extreme sports: rock climbing , wingsuiting and free diving . While the grueling preparations to achieve these stunts keep audiences on the edge of their seats, it’s Bloom’s deep-rooted Buddhist faith that truly stands out.

For more than 30 years, the 47-year-old actor has been a practitioner of Nichiren Buddhism , a philosophy he says has been the anchor in his life, Today reported. At its core, the faith is “about respecting all living beings,” he told Today, “and I liked that as a roadmap. I always wanted a roadmap, and in a way, this practice has been that for me.”

Throughout the show, viewers witness Bloom reciting the chant “Nam-myoho-renge-kyo,” which he explains means, “I bring myself in tune with the rhythm of the universe through the vibration of sound.”

Bloom’s faith shows to be a constant companion on his journey, helping him navigate the challenges and fears that come with attempting extreme feats, from dropping thousands of feet from the sky to diving without oxygen into a deep sinkhole to rock climbing to a summit essentially the size of a pizza box , with a 400-foot drop all around.

“It helped me stay centered and focused,” Bloom told People magazine of his spiritual practice. “It was a full tears/terror/gratitude moment that I think I’ll be able to look back on.”

While some may view Buddhism and extreme sports as opposites, Bloom sees his faith as a grounding force that enables him to embrace challenging opportunities, according to Today. His partner, pop star Katy Perry, initially had reservations about his daring endeavors, but ultimately supported him throughout the experience. In Episode 1, she teases Bloom for looking like “a flying wombat” during his wingsuiting endeavor.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Peacock (@peacock)

“I’m very grateful for my life,” Bloom told the Associated Press . “I’m even more grateful having survived ‘Orlando Bloom: To the Edge.’”

All three episodes of “Orlando Bloom: To The Edge” are now available to stream on Peacock .

Orlando Bloom Says His Body Went Through ‘Extreme Torture’ While Filming New Adventure Show: ‘Full Tears’ (Exclusive)

“It felt like a lightning rod with a bolt going straight through me,” the actor tells PEOPLE of an experience while making ‘Orlando Bloom: To The Edge’

Natalia Senanayake is an Editorial Assistant, Lifestyle at PEOPLE. She covers all things travel and home, from celebrities' luxury mansions to breaking travel news.

Orlando Bloom is reflecting on the intense and rewarding training he endured for his new series.

The award-winning actor, 47, opened up to PEOPLE about pushing himself to his own personal limit in his travel-adventure show, Orlando Bloom: To The Edge (now streaming on Peacock).

While he masters three extremely dangerous sports throughout the series — including wingsuiting, free diving and rock climbing — he recalls a particularly thrilling moment from the third episode when he finally reached the top of a towering rock formation in Moab, Utah, called Ancient Art.

“It still fills me with exhilaration,” Bloom tells PEOPLE of the breakthrough moment. “It felt like a lightning rod with a bolt going straight through me — so connected.”

In the episode, the Pirates of the Caribbean alum seeks guidance from climbing expert Maureen “Mo” Beck in order to reach his goal of standing at the pinnacle that’s the size of a “pizza box,” he recalls.

During the series, the dad of two — he shares daughter Daisy, 3, with his fiancee Katy Perry and son Flynn, 13, with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr — opens up about having to push through his fear after experiencing a near-fatal fall in his twenties , after which he was told he may never walk again.

“The sort of fear and terror of standing up on a pizza box with a 400-foot drop all around you and having put my body through this extreme torture to get there,” he says, “it was a combination of elements that was so real.”

Once he reaches the top, viewers see Bloom scream out in joy and use his Buddhist chants to appreciate the huge milestone.

“It helped me stay centered and focused,” says Bloom of his spiritual practice. “It was a full tears/terror/gratitude moment that I think I'll be able to look back on.”

Throughout the three-part series, Bloom works with a number of experts like Beck to guide him through the physical, mental, and emotional challenges that accompany the nail-biting activities.

He reflects on the important takeaways he learned by training alongside the pros who have made their extreme sport a lifestyle for themselves.

“The education that was being given to me by these experts — like Luke Aikins in skydiving, Camila Jaber and Will Trubridge in the dive, and Mo Beck, who is this remarkable adaptive climber for the climb episode —  it definitely got me focused.”

He notes that by “putting myself in these extreme situations,” he was able to learn the "valuable lesson of becoming more capable, trusting the process and to really be present.”

Stream all three episodes of Orlando Bloom: To The Edge now on Peacock.
