The Avett Brothers at Frost Amphitheater

For over twenty years, The Avett Brothers redefined folk-rock music for its unique blend of different sounds and inspirations matched with their striking honesty – blessing the world with some of their best records such as "Magpie and the Dandelion" and "I and Love and You". Alive and kicking, their newest release is 2020's third installment to their Gleam EP series, a set of stripped-down tracks that NPR notes as "a series of songs that remind you why people fell in love with this band in the first place."

"The lyrics, the honesty, the feeling you could be in the room, right there, up close with them as they sing their heart out," NPR shares in its review.

Well, that feeling you could be right up close with them is right around the corner… Presented by Stanford Live & Goldenvoice, The Avett Brothers are hitting the stage at Frost Amphitheater on September 23rd.

With a roster of tour dates lined up for the rest of the year, the brothers' music is definitely alive and kicking, and fans keep on coming back for more. We get the hype! Nothing can match a night of singing your heart out to "Live and Die", "February Seven", "Ain't No Man", "High Steppin'", and "I and Love and You".

Led by Seth and Scott Avett, the band's music remains fueled by passion and honest songwriting at its core. Blending elements of bluegrass, pop, punk, country, folk, and rock to its mix, they surely got a unique sound you won't hear anywhere else. Bagging Grammy nominations for Best Americana Album with "The Carpenter", Best American Roots Performance with "Ain't No Man", and Best Americana Album for "True Sadness", their music definitely speaks for itself.

In an interview with The Blue Grass Station, talking about what sets their new record apart from their previous releases, Scott explains "If there was a heart or soul or spirit to everything we do, [The Gleams] orbit a bit closer to that. If there’s layers to an entity or a life, this is kind of at the pure center of it."

Celebrating over twenty years in the industry, fans always have a reason to come back to The Avett Brothers' lyrical tales, it's music that connects. Though we're yet to see if a new record is coming out real soon, big surprises might just be around the corner.

Don't miss out on The Avett Brothers live at Frost Amphitheater by booking your tickets now!

Recent tour reviews

Awesome concert with a lot of the old favorites, plus 6 songs from the new album "Closer than Together", including "Long Story Short" for the first time live. Added bonus, when Scott and Seth danced into the audience on "Ain't No Man", Scoot just happened to dance up our row! High fives for everyone!

Stephens Auditorium did an amazing job with security and entrance and exit also.

As always, The Avett Brothers are consummate professionals! Sound Quality was exceptional, Show flowed great with a mix of old favorites and new songs!

Lighting and set were minimal but worked well throughout the show and all flowed as intended.

I also find it interesting that the vibe of the crowd is always polite and into the music for the sake of the music. The mix of the crowd is generally mid 20's to mid 40's but as a fan in my 50's I've seen young families to truly elderly fans enjoying an Avett's show! These guys know how to balance great marketing and salesmanship with truly great music!

I loved the show! I'e seen them 2 dozen times and this show was if I had asked them to play my favorites!! ALL of them... What I don't love is the venue. Too much alcohol being served to the point that too many people were inebriated. I love a beer as much as the next person..but falling down drunk, crushing beer cans underfoot while most people are wearing sandals, and spilling your beer on others is out of control here (and frankly, at other music venues). Plus, at our age, we appreciate being able to sit down on occasion. Also, very hard for first timers to glimpse the Avett's. I'm 5'2" and barely saw a thing (even tho some guy who was wasted offered to pick me up!), but I have seen them enough that I was OK with that, but those next to me travelled from Connecticut to see them for the first time and with everyone standing it was impossible. But their music and singing was as top-notch as ever!!!

The Avett Brothers' new album, Closer Than Together, sees the group navigating a new path through America's many differences—political, economic, geographic. Despite such a tough task, Seth Avett—a founding member and one of the songwriters—says it's their constant travels across the country that's led him to "never have believed more deeply that we are all connected. It's hard to go and meet a bunch of people from different backgrounds and hold on to negative judgement about things you don't know."

We wanted to find out more about the band's travels: from where they sneak out for food when recording at Rick Rubin's iconic Shangri-La studios in Malibu to their favorite venues to play, and where they go to take the edge off when they're home. We didn't expect to also discover where to find California’s best tacos, America's greatest guitar shop, and the one indestructible backpack that has lasted over a decade of international touring.

For a band that's always on the road, the Avett Brothers are known for being passionate about their hometown. What does a weekend in Concord, North Carolina, look like for you?

Some of the best Italian food I've ever had is in downtown Concord, at place called Gianni's Trattoria. If you're coming through Concord, go there, and for God's sake get something with a marinara base. Gianni’s family is from Sicily , and he brought his grandma's recipes from Italy. One of the best vintage guitar shops is a place called Mullis Music, across the street from Gianni's. I learned how to play guitar in the back, but the front is a storefront. If you’re a guitar person coming through Concord, stop in. Uwharrie National Forest is close, and that's pretty tough to beat. It's an incredible place that JFK made official.

You recorded the new album at Rick Rubin’s famous Shangri-La Studios in Malibu. Where did you go between sessions to catch your breath?

If you're ever in Malibu wanting to get fish tacos and a Mexican beer, The Reel Inn is just the best place. I love it to death. There's also an upper-echelon juice bar that's close to the studio, Sunlife Organics, which is really wonderful. That said, Shangri-La has been custom outfitted by Rick to be a place where you don't feel all that much urge to leave. You can relax and get work done at the same time, which is a unique dichotomy. The way the backyard is set up makes it feel like you can get away without getting away, which is really nice.

Giant American companies should talk to Rick about their office design.

Now that would be a valuable consultation. Step one: Paint everything white. Take everything off the walls. Anything that could possibly be considered superfluous or extraneous? Get rid of it. That would be a good start.

I’m bringing paint to the office tomorrow.

Do it! I'm sure they'll understand.

Which venues hold a special place in The Avett Brothers’ heart?

Red Rocks is always a wonderful, massive experience. It's a family reunion for us, we play three nights there every year now, in the summer. It's become a tradition that people can count on, a real mile-marker each year for everyone involved. Everything comes together at Red Rocks: connection with the audience, the beauty of the environment, and that grand feeling of almost 10,000 people together in the audience.

So if there’s ever an Avett show to travel to, that'd be it?

That's a great one. There's also a venue called Wolf Trap in Virginia, another place where there’s a momentous feeling, the vibe is through the roof, and the surroundings are exceedingly beautiful. Berkeley, too.

My old bedroom there was next to the Greek, and I remember ‘Kick Drum Heart’ coming through the window one night as I studied.

That's incredible. The Greek is a spot that always blows our minds, and the whole town has such a unique energy. Berkeley's always been very kind to us.

Do you remember the first tour?

Oh, yes. In 2001, Scott and I were deluded enough to think the world was going to come to us. We were terrified and intimidated by the concept of booking a tour. Our bass player, Bob, was the first who dug in and tackled it without knowing how to do it. We took my Dad's pick-up truck, with a camper on the back. We ate one real meal a day, and otherwise we would spread peanut butter on bread. We were up every night until two or three in the morning, and then we’d skip hotels and camp in a tent to save money. No one had GPS, I didn't even have a cellphone, we'd just chart where we needed to get to on a physical map. It was our introduction to how alive it can make you feel to be out there, following your heart, and creating your own job.

Because you're on the road a lot, do you travel for pleasure, too?

For me, the most pleasure is being home, but my wife and son understandably still want to go places themselves. Traveling for enjoyment has really been cut down quite a bit with our schedule to essentially the annual beach trip, and the quick trip to Kentucky to see family. Really just the conversation we're having right now is reminding me we have to figure something out.

You're like any other working American. Fifteen days a year.

Exactly. We’ve got to go to Hawaii !

Do your and Scott's travel vibes complement each other?

We're different in one key way. Scott has more anxiety before a big tour than I do. I don't realize I have reservations about being gone, and then once we're out there it suddenly hits me. Whereas Scott will really feel it early, then be thrilled once we’re out there. And also logistically, the inside of my backpack is a full-on blueprint. Everything has its place.

If there was ever a publication to describe it to…

I'd have to draw it! But obviously all of my chargers and cables are in a zip bag. Then I have a tiny waterproof Pelican case, where I keep chocolate-covered sunflower seeds. I ditched the computer because of the weight, so now it’s iPad, sketchbook, paperback. And it all goes into this backpack that just will not die.

Please tell us more.

I bought this bag casually at an Army surplus store in Nashville, Tennessee , nearly fifteen years ago. I want to finally give it props: It's called the Blackhawk Three-Day Assault Pack . It’s the most dependable, simple, hardcore bag I've ever had, and probably ever will. This thing cannot be killed.

Twenty years of touring will turn anyone into a pro.

When you're touring, you're looking for things to create consistency in your life, because everything else is changing. I take my own mug everywhere. It's funny how much those kinds of things can make you feel calm. It’s like, “Yep, I'm on a plane, but I have my mug. My sketchbook. My pen.”

Next, the band will make a slew of Southern stops as it picks up gigs in Georgia, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. Outlaw Music Festival: Willie Nelson, The Avett Brothers, Gov't Mule & Lucinda Williams at Shoreline Amphitheatre

“The Outlaw Music Festival Tour has always been about family and friends coming together for a great day of music and fun, and with the amazing group of artists joining us, this year promises to be our most special Outlaw Tour to date. I just can’t wait to get back on the road again,” says Willie Nelson.

Musician, actor, and activist Willie Nelson, founding fathers of the Outlaw country movement in the 70s, has been rocking the stage sine 1956! During 2020, Willie spent his lock-down live-streaming benefit concerts, he raised almost 1 million dollars for people who had suffered financial loss due to effects on the U.S. economy. From Concord, North Carolina, The Avett Brothers are no strangers to the festival, having played here regularly, and will be bringing their novel Bluegrass-country, Punk-pop melodies blended with Folk, Rock and roll and honk-tonk-ragtime sound. This will be the first time you can get to hear their third installment of their Gleam series, The Gleam III, live. The American Southern-rock jam band Gov't Mule are no strangers to huge festivals and their frequent surprise guests are always a huge hit with fans. Grammy Award Winning Artist Lucinda Williams also has a new-ish album, Good Souls Better Angels, out in 2020 that will be receiving its first live plays here too!

MOKB Presents announced that three-time GRAMMY® nominated Americana superstars The Avett Brothers will perform live in downtown Indianapolis for one night only on Thursday, Sept. 12, 2024 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse (125 S. The Avett Brothers made mainstream waves with their critically acclaimed 2009 major label debut, I And Love And You. In 2012, The Carpenter hit No. 4 on the Billboard Top 200, followed by Magpie And The Dandelion in 2013, which debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200. In 2016, the band was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. The 2017 documentary, May It Last: A Portrait of The Avett Brothers, chronicles the process of writing 2016’s True Sadness, which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Albums, No. 1 on Rock Albums, No. 3 on the Billboard 200, andscored 2 Grammy nominations. In 2019, the band released their tenth studio album, Closer Than Together, featuring the single “High Steppin'” which reached No. 1 on the Americana Radio Singles Chart. The band's 2020 album, The Third Gleam, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart, No. 1 Rock Albums, and No. 1 Vinyl Albums, and the single “Victory" hit No. 1 on the Americana Radio Singles Chart. The group recently announced news of their first album in five years, out May 17 via Ramseur Records/American Recordings/Thirty Tigers. Produced by longtime collaborator, friend and early champion Rick Rubin, The Avett Brothers is as much untitled as it is self-titled, for as Thomas Keating said: "Silence is God's first language – everything else is a poor translation." From the album's all-vocal opening to the sharp, scrappy and scorching rock n roll blast of lead single "Love Of A Girl," to the novel strains of folk, roots, synth and strings that have landed The Avett Brothers numerous Billboard Top 5 and chart-topping albums, GRAMMY® nominations, five Americana Music Awards, a documentary co-directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio, and so much more, this record is one that revealed itself naturally over time

Houndmouth is an American alternative blues band from New Albany, Indiana formed in 2011, led by Matt Myers (guitar, vocals). Houndmouth formed in the summer of 2011. After playing locally in Louisville and Indiana, they performed at the SXSW music festival in March 2012 to promote their homemade self-titled EP. Geoff Travis, the head of Rough Trade was in the audience and offered a contract shortly after. In 2012, the band was named “Band Of The Week” by The Guardian. In 2013 Houndmouth’s debut album, From the Hills Below the City, was released by Rough Trade. This led to performances on Letterman, Conan, World Cafe, and several major festivals (ACL, Americana Music Festival, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and Newport Folk Festival). SPIN and Esquire.com named Houndmouth a “must-see” band at Lollapalooza, and Garden & Gun said, “You’d be hard pressed to find a more effortless, well-crafted mix of roots and rock this year than the debut album from this Louisville quartet.”
