Trek 5500 full carbon fiber road bike.

US Postal Service Team colors (special edition)

Full OCLV 120 carbon frame and fork

Same exact bike ridden in two Tour de France victories.

This bike was $3800 new.

Mostly Shimano Dura Ace components.

Fork:  ICON Air Rail (full carbon) Headset: 1 1/8″ threadless Cane Creek S-2 Wheels: Bontrager Race Lite  (newer than the frame) Tires: Bontrager Derailleurs: Shimano Dura Ace Shifters: Shimano 105 Crankset: Shimano Dura Ace Cassette: SRAM 11-26 (brand new!) Saddle: Bontrager Handlebar: Bontrager 440mm Brake Calipers: Shimano Dura Ace Chain:  brand new!

Bike is clean and perfectly tuned and ready to ride… but cosmetically a little rough from normal wear and tear.  Just replaced the chain and cassette so those have zero miles.  Also just wrapped the bars in new black tape.  Cables and housings also newer.

Stem was slammed–with a 17 degree stem–but we’ve reversed it to bring the bars back up to a comfortable position.  Easy to flip back over if you want to get super aero.  We also have other stem options available for dialing in the fit.

Excellent bike for the MS-150, Tour de Houston, Katy Flatlands, Bike Around the Bay… or just the occasional weekend bike ride.  We’ve bought / sold / owned / ridden many many many USPS Team bikes like this one–in their various color configurations–and we always questions and comments on those bikes when we do group rides.  Even with Lance’s dramatic fall from grace, that era still influenced a lot of riders; I can still remember staying up all night here in the states to watch live Tour de France coverage to see what amazing feats Lance would manage to pull off next.

The saddle isn’t original–it’s newer and a bit more comfortable than the factory USPS team saddle… but I think we still have a couple of those in the saddle box… so I could swap that out if so desired.

VERY highly rated bikes: http://www.roadbikereview.com/cat/latest-bikes/road-bike/trek/5500/prd_290749_5668crx.aspx

Lightness, comfort, looks

None that I can think of

I bought this bike 1 1/2 years ago on Kiji, and although I got it for less than half price, it was still scary to fork our that much cash for a road bike. I'd been riding a 70's era BRC road bike, which I'd upgraded. But there's no comparison with the Trek. I'm almost 65, and I'm now experiencing a bike renaissance thanks to this bike. It's got less than 1,000 km on it, so it's a newborn. All I've replaced so far is the handlebar tape and the seat (upgraded to a f:sik). I try to get out almost every day. Despite Trek getting some bad press and Sir Lancelot falling off his throne, it's still a great bike.

durability, speed, and comfort.

after 10 years of riding - none so far.

Bought new in 04'. 53K miles and just upgraded the BB to the new 9000 do to non drive side bearing noise. Still a fast, stiff, and low maintenance ride. I know Trek is suppose to suck, just sayin.

Light, comfortable, good cornering

Got the frame for a case of beer, loved it ever since I got it has full ultegra

god rides this bike because it's so bad ass

this bike has no weaknesses !

all in all great bike and love the why it rides... If you don't have this bike you need to get one.

Light, comfortable, like the handling.

The rider is getting old! Nothing to complain about the bike itself. Maybe could use a slightly stiffer fork.

I was a serious MTB rider but had not owned a road bike for 10+ years. Bought the 5500 (at the price for a 5200, because it had Ultegra rather than Dura Ace components). Rode the Marlkeville Death Ride in 1996, and many miles in the Utah mountains. Upgraded to Ultegra 9 spd triple when that became available (now somewhat regret the triple, but that is another matter). Love the bike, have ridden it many thousands of miles and never been remotely tempted to replace it.

Lightspeed Classic, Specialized Allez

Responsiveness, weight (although nowadays there are lighter), comfort. And hey, there's got to be some collectability there as it was ridden by Sir Lancelot to TdF victory.

None that I can think of. Well, you can get slightly lighter frames now, but the Trek is still highly competitive.

This is a 2004 model. It has been a fantastic bike. The ride is stiff and responsive but also very comfortable. The handling is also faultless. I also own a Cannondale Super Six, which definitely has a stiffer bottom bracket for snappier acceleration, anbd slightly sharper handling, but this is really splitting hairs. The Trek was my first carbon fibre framed bike and is still ridden regularly today, although mostly as a decadent commuter or occasional wet weather bike. It's been lovingly maintained and apart from a few stone chips looks as good as the day I bought it.

Cannondale CAAD4, Cannondale System Six, Cannondale Super Six

Light, carbon frame, great paint, comfortable ride.

Paint scratches easily.

This is my dream bike. It is light-weight, fast and sexy! Full Dura-Ace with Ksyrium SSC wheels. Solid ride, climbs well -- one of the best CF bikes ever made.

None that compare.

Trek warrenty is excellent!! Light!! Looks

The ride is a little mushy and you dont get the same power as you do from other bikes.

This bike isn't the dream bike for me like what another bike would be for the same price. I have to say, my bike being a 2003, it isn't as good as it could get. The ride is a little soft. The first kinda "group race" I was at, I felt like I was working harder than I used to for the same power.

Specialized aluminum frame.

Plush ride, the carbon fiber really dampens the harsh road condintions. Light weight makes it a very good climber. Stiff bottom bracket makes out of the saddle and sprinting easy. Paint job! Fabulous paint job with the custom flame paint. The Trek web site does not do the paint job justice.

Bontranger tires don't perform as well as Michelin Pro Race I am used to, both in feel and durablility. For the price, I would have expected titanium rails on the saddle standard-not option. Initial set-up of Dura Ace did not deliver as crisp of shifting as my old Ultegra.

I bought a 5500 Project One from my LBS. This was a post deployment gift to myself for spending a year in Iraq. My LBS ordered it for me to my specs. At first the bike didn't seem to handle as well on fast downhill turns as my previous ride. This was due to the feel I received form the tires and the carbon fork. After 1300 miles since picking it up on 29Jan05, I am extremely happy with the bike. The combination of my weight loss in Iraq and the weight reduction of the bike (4lbs lighter than my old rig) makes all areas of riding better. This bike begs you to rack up the miles.

1996 Giant CRF 3, upgraded in 2000 to Ultegra 9 speed. Shimano Flight Deck and Shimano Ultegra wheelset. Logged over 35,000 miles on it.

Light, Fast, Stable. Flawless green paint job. Frame is beautiful to look at. Comfortable ride. Got to choose all components. A custon bike that performs. Made in the U.S.A.

None. Hard to ever consider riding a lessor bike.

This bike exceeded my exectations in every way. I have used this bike for over 3,000 miles and can find nothing to complain about. The bontrager wheels are fantastic, Still in perfect original true after subjection to my initial 232 pound body. Now my 60 year old 200 pound body climbs hills and can compleate a century ride with speed and comfort. After 35 years of avid cycling, this is the first bike I can recomend without reservation. Buying this bike was a great experience, thanks to Chris and all the crew at Palm Springs Cyclery. They gave me great advice and lots their time in fine tuning my order and selecting the right components for my needs. Service has been exceptional and my bike is retuned on time and sparkling clean.

Custom Reynolds 531 frame with campy super record.

Our strongest, lightest carbon yet

OCLV Carbon is Trek’s patented carbon fiber process, the result of more than 25 years of experience building the world’s finest carbon fiber bicycles in Waterloo, Wisconsin, USA. Experience matters, especially when working with a material that holds seemingly endless possibilities but presents such unique challenges as carbon fiber. To understand the best technology, you have to build it, and we’ve been doing just that since 1991.

Why OCLV Carbon?

A well-built carbon frame dramatically reduces weight compared to metallic materials, while maintaining the strength and stiffness that high performance bicycles and their riders demand. This is where Trek’s pioneered and patented OCLV Carbon—an acronym for Optimum Compaction Low Void—process comes in. OCLV Carbon frames begin with the best material available. Trek has spent countless development hours perfecting the construction of a variety of weights and types of carbon (cloth, unidirectional, etc.). The OCLV process is best explained when broken down into two parts:

Optimum Compaction: Carbon is layered into a series of plies compacted to the ideal fiber-resin ratio. The process starts with cutting carbon fiber from large sheets to a specific shape which is then placed into a mold. A combination of heat and pressure then compresses the sheets of carbon into a carbon lug. This combination of heat and pressure is OCLV’s most essential and closely guarded equation. Low Void: Voids are the spaces that exist between the layers of carbon fiber that comprise a component or frame. Minimizing these voids is the primary goal of quality carbon engineering, as more voids translates to reduced strength and durability of the composite material. OCLV Carbon exceeds aerospace standards regarding the number of voids in its material.

Shapes matter

In addition to sizeable reductions in weight, the largest advantage of carbon fiber frames over another material are the limitless shapes that the material can be molded into. Different shapes exhibit different strength, stiffness, and aerodynamic properties. Trek utilizes Finite Element Analysis, a comprehensive software simulation toolkit, to tell us exactly how different shapes will respond to different riders and riding surfaces. We utilize proven theories of fluid mechanics through Computational Fluid Dynamics in order to explore the aerodynamic properties of various designs. Our bikes are conceived with computer-generated designs, fluid-dynamically assessed and finite analyzed, and the resulting shapes appear seamlessly machine-made. At the end of the day, these complex scientific investigations are applied in a hands-on, ground-up process that combines multiple molds with a variety of carbon materials to result in a magnificently engineered and largely hand-built product.

OCLV Mountain

Mountain biking is about pushing the limit of where your bike can take you. Riding on every conceivable surface in hostile conditions takes a toll on any material. To develop OCLV Mountain, Trek’s engineers developed a methodology borrowed from the aerospace industry to ensure our frames were up to the challenge: Retained Strength. The philosophy is simple and based around the single question of how durable a frame remains following impact. By employing different composite materials in unique layups specifically in typical high damage areas, Trek’s engineers have created frames that now retain their ability to bear load after an impact surpassing even their aluminum counterparts.

Carbon armor

Taking durability to another level, Trek’s development team created Carbon Armor, a highly refined elastomeric designed to slow down and spread the distribution of a sharp impact to the frame. Carbon Armor essentially decreases the immediate impact of a rough hit the frame feels, leaving you feeling more confident than ever to go after that next drop.

Built to last

Trek builds bikes to last and we stand behind every one that we bears our name. Just as the first Trek hand-welded over forty years ago in a red barn, our first full carbon frame is still under warranty. All OCLV Carbon bicycles come with a limited lifetime warranty, because we believe that more people riding bikes is in everybody’s best interest.

Trek Domane 5.9 Dura-Ace review

The essence of what an endurance bike should be.

Trek's Domane 5.9 Dura-Ace never fails to make us smile – even after long hours in the saddle

Trek Domane Disc 4.0 and 6.9 announced

Trek Domane Koppenberg frameset released

Pro bike: Dan McConnell's Trek Domane Koppenberg

Pro bikes: Devolder's Domane Classics and Domane Koppenberg

Every occasion we get to ride Trek's Domane we're astonished anew by its capabilities. From the outset it’s like climbing aboard a suspension bike – or at least a cyclocross machine with large, low-pressure tyres. But that description doesn't do justice to the urgency that’s matched to its unerring comfort – on the tarmac it just conquers any and every surface texture, from billiard table-smooth to broken and potholed.

It should have no right to be this good, but ride one and you'll see why Fabian Cancellara prefers the Domane as his year-round race bike, not just for the cobbled Classics. The key is the Isospeed Decoupler, which allows the essentially floating seat tube to pivot and flex freely at the top-tube/seatstay junction, and the similarly effective Isospeed fork.

For dyed-in-the-wool roadies brought up to believe that stiff and rigid means more speed, and cushioning is for wimps, the result is mind-altering. Not only is the majority of unwanted road vibration killed off well before it reaches you, but power transfer and handling finesse are completely unaffected. You get a blisteringly rapid race bike with more comfort, more grip and more confidence. It's the true definition of endurance – a bike that looks after your muscles and contact points, so you remain fresher for longer, and can therefore ride further, faster.

It really is a win-win situation. On short climbs, the Domane can punch with the best, and there's no compromise on sustained gradients, but on the exposed, corrugated and heavily potholed gravel roads that comprise the high point of our test route, where winter had replaced dust with slimy mud – conditions only a ’cross bike should love – the Domane was never less than planted.

The ride quality with slick 25mm tyres inflated to 90psi felt more like 32mm tyres at 40psi. Control was never in question, slippy off-camber line changes and pothole weaving were simple, and rejoining rain-lashed tarmac we felt a level of trust in the Domane's performance that enabled us to commit to technical corners with confidence.

trek oclv 5500 full carbon dura ace

The Domane's ride quality is awesome even on rugged surfaces – but there's no lack of killer instinct

Our frame may have lesser carbon than the one Fabian rides, but mechanical Dura-Ace is the big man's choice for foolproof operation on the cobbles, and it would be our preference. Silky smooth, devastatingly efficient and ergonomic, it has pro written all over it. The Bontrager RL wheelset is a cost saver, but acquits itself very well, proving the value of matching wheels to a frame. They're 24mm wide, shallow and asymmetric, with 25mm rubber that measures 26mm, adding extra stability to an already composed ride. With the asymmetric frame, the wheels give willing, if not electric, acceleration, but always feel positive and exceptionally nimble whether driving into a headwind or stomping up a local berg.

The clever Ride Tuned seatpost slides externally over the frame's extended seat-tube. It's simple to adjust, adds rigidity and seals the frame against water and filth ingress – just as well, given the conditions we tested in. Bontrage's Paradigm saddle is a fine shape and extremely comfortable, and there are even Trek's hidden mudguard mounts for those days you're not racing to Roubaix.

There are no concessions to aerodynamics, just a superlative race bike that thinks it's a fat bike. It climbs with the best, descends better than most, and will go places no other road bike should. It's as much of an all-rounder as the man who took his third Flanders crown last spring.

15 years old and still my favourite Carbon ride. Trek 5200

  • Add to quote

Just got back from 10 days in Mallorca with my Bianchi Sempre. Did over six hundred miles, up the mountains and through he lanes. Yesterday, for a change I went on on a regular club run on my 15 year old Trek 5200 and I loved it. It's not quite as sharp as the Bianchi, but it was smoother and felt lighter to ride. Just what a 60 years old rider like me is looking for. If I had to choose just one to keep it would be the Trek. If someone had given me the bike to ride, not knowing what it was, I would have bought it Anyone else had similar experiences when they have bought a new bike and then dug out the old one? It's easy to kid yourself when you've just dumped loads of dosh on a new bike. I remember when I first got the bike, I was riding a Vitus 979 Dural at the time and the Trek amazed me with it's ride quality. Then I moved to Ti. I have a few bikes, but the Trek always puts a smile on my face when I ride it..

trek oclv 5500 full carbon dura ace

Trek 5200 is a great bike. Not as stiff as a the newer bikes out there and slightly heavier, but very comfortable and better built than many of the newer bikes. Bike can be made to feel more modern simply by upgrading the wheels and component group. I like the look of my USPS colored bike more than the newer bikes out there. I do think my newer C59 eclipses the Trek in performance, but the Trek is a better bike than most bikes being made today, and Lance rode it to victory in the Tour De France, so it's definitely made for racing I too was recently in Mallorca, while i rode my Colnago there, I was surprised at how many 5200's and older 5.9 discovery Treks there.

This response gets me to think that frames have not improved as much as the guys selling bikes would have us believe.

I was quite taken with the smoothness of the ride compared to my Bianchi and the Bianchi has Vittoria open pave 28mm on the back and a 24mm on the front. The Trek has Michelin pro race 3. 25mm Also the Trek has Open Pros and the Bianchi Ksyrium Elites. Not sure how much difference this make though.

There's something wrong, when everyone's buying wider tires, to compensate for stiff frame design.

I agree, they're not one of the liveliest frames out there, and maybe racers might be looking for that little bit extra, But for the club rider who likes to get the miles in, they take some beating. Compared to the Sempre, it a really smooth ride, more noticeable I think because I've just spent 10 days on the Bianchi. My 5200 is a year 2000 model with the 1in steel steerer tube and the steering is really light and it make the bike feel lighter to ride. The only Carbon bike I can compare it to is the Bianchi, a friend of mine who has just bought a C59 also as a Trek 5200, one of the last ones before they went to Madone. He's still not sure which he prefers, the C59 or the 5200.

I rode a Trek 5200 and then 5500 over a period of 17 years. The only dislike was the dead feeling. After I sold my 5500 a got Tarmac SL3. The ride was noticeably stiffer and harsher and I am not sure was any faster. I recently sold the Tarmac and I am building up a Cannondale EVO in hopes it will be the perfect compromise. Since I am currently without a bike a borrowed my daughters Trek 5500 that I built for her from a used frame I bought on Ebay for $300. I rode it yesterday and thought damn I like this bike, its smooth and really stable, but it did feel a bit too sedate. But All in all still a bike worth riding and enjoyable.

Robert Parker convinced the wine world that fruit bombs were great wines. Similarly I feel there's been a movement that stiffer always means better and faster with regard to bikes. i reject both. The 5200 is a nice bike perhaps because it's not overly stiff and it tracks well. I clearly like those qualities, as the c-59 is not known as the stiffest bike made today either, but it does ride well. Ignoring endurance bikes with their long chainstays it seems more and more the only way to get a balanced race bike is to go custom.

I agree, wheels do liven up the ride. When everybody is pushing how comfortable their bike are and the lengths they say the go to to achieve this, the ( Bianchi Infinito CV springs to mind). I reckon Trek had it sorted 15 years years ago with the 5200. When you talk about the Trek 5200, one word always seems to crop up, Smoothness. When I've not ridden it for a while, the smoothness of the ride it the first thing I notice. I'm sixty years old and a med to long distance club rider. 80 to 120 miles. and I doubt there is a better Carbon bike out there for my needs. Never liked the Trek paint and livery though, so I resprayed mine.

I've got two, the one in the pic is a 2004 model. I still have the 2000 model with the the 1inch steel steerer. They both ride the same though. I built the 2004 one from bits I bought off ebay. I think I'm done buying bikes now though. lol

Other than a Colnago c-50 I don't recall a carbon bike from that era having so many fans.

It does because the Lance craze at the time. I used to own one and it was a great riding bike on long trips, but it lacked feedback. It did have a dead feel to it.

I had a very nice 2004 5900 Super Light. One ride on a 2006 Time VXS had me switch. The Trek was just a bit twitchy in comparison. I prefered the more relaxed ride. I added a 5.9 Domane to the stable and ride the snot out of that. It is a bit more comfortable than the Time and feels stiffer climbing, but not much. The 11 speed on the new Domane is really what sets it apart (yes, I could upgrade the Time) The old Trek was a fine bike, but I have no regrets about moving on.

I think the big news here is that it hasn't assploded, melted away from UV exposure, fallen apart from electrolysis, delaminated from moisture, or succumbed to the other innumerable frailties of CF.

Lol! Agreed..

Yeah, a change of tyres and wheels goes a long to helping with this "dead feel" people talk about Having said that, given some of the roads here in the UK. lack of feedback a good thing. Some of the roads over here shake you to bits.

I love mine. 2003. Just rebuilt completely after shifter failure. Dura Ace 7800. New wheels, tire, tubes, chain, cassette, cables and housing. all bearings regreased. Rides like a dream. As I get older I am thinking about new BB and compact crank to help me over the hills. Have any of you had experience with a compact crank on these? My concern is can I lower my braze on front derailleur enough to work correctly with the compact crank.

I can't imagine why you could not do a complete switchover to 6800 or 9000 including bottom bracket. english thread is english tread.

I would love to up grade to 7800 non-compact , but I'm not comfortable shopping for used parts on ebay.....

A compact works fine with the std braze on hanger. I have two and they both work fine. The gap is slightly bigger then recommened but it it doesen't effect the shifting.

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

You still need to make sure it's lined up with chainrimg though. Even though it's braze there is some side ways movement.
