Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped

Trek’s Powerfly range is the company’s answer to a sporty commuter, which is designed to bridge the gap from the urban environment to the trails. The range of hardtail e-MTBs were brought out to be versatile, capable of holding their own on their dirt, but also capable for the daily routine of life or a companion on long distance tours.

The range comes in many different guises, from the super sporty FS versions, which come naked at the rear, or the Equipped versions, which have racks over the back wheel to take panniers or bags. The Powerfly 7 Equipped is the second highest spec bike in the Equipped series.

So, has Trek been able to really master multiple terrains and purposes at once? Or is it a case of this bike being a Jack of all trades, and master of none? Let’s find out…

Our Verdict

Congratulations to the crew at Trek – the company has created a belting bike here.

It’s very hard to straddle the worlds of commuter, trail and tourer – and the folk at Trek have managed it here.

The bike features excellent component pairing, with a top end Bosch battery and motor, a seriously robust frame and durable wheel components – it’s made for lots and lots… and lots of riding.

It isn’t a gnarly single-track shredder, and it doesn’t pretend to be, but it gets the elements it needs to get right absolutely spot on.

Potentially, the suspension deserves an upgrade given the price, but apart from that we’re pretty stoked with this one.

  • Commutable & tour riding friendly

Weight/frame.

The Powerfly 7 Equipped comes with an Alpha Platinum compound aluminium frame.

The bike is made to be robust and is fitted with a pannier/bag cage over the back wheel, so it’s usable on the daily commute or on touring style rides.

It’s a solid bike and you feel very stable up top, exactly what you need from a bike which might have to balance extra weight on the back from luggage.

That comes at a cost, though, the overall weight of the bike comes in at 25.12kg (in a size medium), so it is a bit of a beast to contend with.

The bike comes in 5 frame sizes – extra small , small , medium , large and extra large – with the weight varying slightly between them.

You feel that extra weight out on the trickier trails, it doesn’t manipulate well and feels very cumbersome, but really – the bike isn’t made for technical trails or on seriously sharp up and down terrain.

It’s made to be a loyal partner on longer, flatter, distances and it certainly holds its own on the gravel or on a dirt road with a few lumps.

The Powerfly 7 Equipped comes with a chunky 625Wh Bosch PowerTube battery . The bike is made to take on some longer distance riding and the Bosch battery offers the capabilities to keep pushing on longer and longer.

Given the bike isn’t made for super technical and steep trail-based inclines, that battery actually stretches a long old way and it’s ultra reliable. On the flatter style of terrain you’re likely to be tackling, the battery gives you hours and hours of fun.

How Long Does a Trek Powerfly Battery Last?

We found on our review rides that we got well over 100km on one charge, with juice still to go on with. It’s secured tightly into the downtube and is easily removable with a simple click system.

The PowerTube takes around five hours to fully charge from dead and only two hours to get to 50%, which means you can get back out on the road/trail at pace. A fitting battery for this burly bike.

Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped battery

The Powerfly 7 Equipped comes with a seriously powerful Bosch Performance CX motor , which can punch out up to 85Nm of torque. We’re very impressed with this pairing yet again from Trek.

That extra kick takes the edge off the bike’s overall weight and means you don’t have any anxiety when approaching a large hill. The power is delivered in a super-natural way and it doesn’t give off any unusual drag or overshoot.

It also works very intelligently with the battery to release the power conservatively. Overall, it’s a stunning partnership for a bike, which could feel very sluggish – however, the electrical components are well matched to the bike’s needs.

Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped motor

Motor Display

The Powerfly 7 Equipped is fitted with a Bosch Kiox display – another excellent choice from Trek. The Kiox is a best friend while out riding, offering your battery percentage as an exact percentage – praise the Lord!

It’s exactly what we want and now expect from a motor display, but it doesn’t always happen. The Kiox offers much more than that, though. It also offers calorie consumption data, pedalling cadence, speed, distance to your destination, among many other features. You can also link it up to a heart rate monitor via Bluetooth to keep on top of your performance.

We found it a beautiful display to accompany us on our review rides and it elevated the overall ride experience.

trek powerfly equipped 2022

The Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped is a hardtail e-MTB, so only comes fitted with front suspension. It’s one of the reasons the bike is so good on the longer distance rides and on urban streets – you don’t suffer from any unnecessary bounce or sponginess from the back end.

At the front end the bike comes with SR Suntour Zeron 35, air-sprung, front forks , which have 120mm of travel . Listen, the forks are a bit uninspiring if we’re honest, but you haven’t bought this bike to launch of jumps and take on huge downhill routes.

The bike has enough give to cope with the demands of a touring cycle and on your daily commute.

ℹ️ Another moment to be very aware of what you’re looking at here. This isn’t an all gnarly trail rider, so steer clear if that’s what you want.

Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped front fork

Wheels/Tyres

Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped rims

The Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped is fitted with different wheel sizes, depending on the size of frame you go for. For the extra small and small versions you’ll get a 27.5in wheel setup, but a larger 29in setup on the medium , large and extra large frame sizes.

The bike comes with Bontrager Line Comp 30 wheels and Bontrager LT4 Expert tyres . Both are a really decent accompaniment for the type of strains the bike is put under. The wheels are super durable and ultra strong – capable of taking the extra weight of luggage and long distance use.

The tyres offer enough bite on the dirt, but also shed very well on hard packed and on concrete – useful so that you aren’t carting extra drag around for hours on end.

Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped brakes

The Powerfly 7 Equipped comes with a 4-piston, hydraulic disc brake setup , with M6100 levers and M6120 callipers . They offer enough bite to bring you to a halt when needed. They aren’t all singing, all dancing, but you don’t need them to be.

Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped drivetrain

The Powerfly 7 Equipped comes with a 12-speed SLX M7100 group set . They offer smooth shifting and an ease of use, which you need when spending hours up top on the pedals. The pairing does everything you need them to.

A decent price point for the Trek Powerfly 7 Equipped. We’re impressed with the ability to include those high spec Bosch components for the price and there aren’t many points to grumble about throughout the whole bike. Bravo to the Trek team.

How Does it Compare?

A good range of bikes to compare the Powerfly 7 Equipped to is the Canyon Grand Canyon:ON series.

The Grand Canyon:ON bikes are made for the same purpose – with the aim of being versatile rides, capable of switching from road to dirt and useful for commuters, along with being comfortable over longer distances.

We’ve recently reviewed the Grand Canyon:ON 8, so will shine the spotlight on this bike in our comparison.

Canyon Grand Canyon:ON

Firstly, the Powerfly 7 Equipped is more than $2,500 more expensive, but is it worth the extra money?

The Grand Canyon:ON 8 is lighter by 3kg, but it is far more poorly kitted out in the electronics department. The Shimano components, despite offering the same sort of power and battery life, are far inferior.

The Shimano Steps EP8 on the Canyon doesn’t touch the Bosch Performance CX motor on our Trek. And the user experience is far poorer, too. The display on the Canyon is disappointing and our Kiox 300 is magnificent.

You also can’t just clip out your battery on your Canyon, it has to be unscrewed, which is a pain in the backside. The Canyon shades it with a RockShox suspension, with the same 120mm of travel.

The wheels, brakes and drivetrain on both are solid and do the job needed. Overall, it’s a tough call, but we found the overall user experience far more enjoyable on the Trek, compared to the Canyon.

You may pay more, but we think you’re getting a much better rounded package.

Final Thoughts

We think Trek has done beautifully here. We’ve thoroughly enjoyed riding the Powerfly 7 Equipped in our review rides. It’s a versatile e-MTB, which can take on many different types of terrain and do so with a flourish.

Be it commuting in the city, heading out on a long touring cycle or a quick rip through some forest roads and minor trails – the bike handles it well. They’ve selected their component partnerships excellently and the bike rides a dream.

Our only qualm would be the suspension – for the price you’re paying, we think Trek could have pushed the boat out more. It isn’t cheap for this sort of bike, but you won’t be let down.

At least that’s our view, now go out and find out for yourselves.

Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped review

An assisted full-suspension, big-travel commuter?

Russell Burton / Immediate Media

Russell Burton

Comfort; range; stability

Expensive, especially if you’re considering leaving it outside the local shop

The FS9 is top of Trek’s four-model Powerfly Equipped range of electric bikes designed to combine practicality for commuting with the off-road fun of the best mountain bikes .

Its specification, which combines a long-range 625Wh battery, a Bosch Performance 250W motor and a full-suspension setup with powerful four-piston brakes, is sending a message that it won’t flinch when the going gets tough.

Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped specifications

The Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped eBike is equipped with a Bosch Performance CX motor

At first glance, all that off-road tech seems at odds with the bike’s more sedate features, which include integrated full-length mudguards, a kickstand and built-in lights.

Trek’s promo video shows the sort of shopping trip we all wish we had, with a route mixing road and scenic dirt track, and I approached my first ride on the Powerfly hoping this could be the commuter bike of my dreams .

The strong Bontrager Line Comp 30 wheels, shod in chunky 29x2.4in tyres, the SR Suntour Zeron 35 120mm suspension fork and RockShox SID Luxe Select rear shock are pulled from the mountain biking world.

The Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped eBike is equipped with Bontrager LT4 Expert 29x2.4in tyres

It’s a combination that would normally be compromised by its weight for commuting, but in pairing it with an 85Nm motor so powerful as to be unbothered by extra heft, Trek has managed to optimise the Powerfly for the commute.

And who wouldn’t want comfortable, grippy tyres, powerful brakes and plush suspension?

That suspension was something that gave me pause for thought before testing – can a full-suspension machine with a mountain bike heritage be efficient on the road? Yes. Keep reading to find out how.

Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped geometry

Trek powerfly fs9 equipped battery life.

Not that I have experienced problems with battery range, regularly riding 70-90km, including over 1,000m of climbing, and arriving home with plenty in the tank.

There are four modes – Eco, Tour (eMTB Lite), eMTB and Turbo – and even on longer routes, I didn’t have to drop to Eco to preserve battery life, riding mainly in Tour mode with short boosts of added power.

Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped ride impressions

Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped eBike has 12speed gears

I’d not used this fork before and it surprised me – in a good way. It's stiff enough to support the bike’s weight, it doesn’t bounce when you’re pedalling hard on the road, yet it sucks up the chatter of poor tarmac.

Transitioning to forest tracks, it smooths the ride so you barely lose speed over rocks and roots.

The rear shock is unusually positioned behind the seatpost, but is protected by the full mudguard. It absorbs the bumps but, as with the fork, doesn’t bounce. It plants the back wheel into the ground in a way that feels secure and maintains grip right through corners.

That security and control is underlined by the Shimano XT four-piston brakes, which are strong enough to slow the weight of the bike quickly and smoothly without locking.

The Powerfly FS9 Equipped seems to love going fast in a straight line the most, and the distances I’ve ridden on a mix of roads and tracks are testament to its comfort and ride appeal.

It does, however, have limits on more technical terrain.

I’ve ridden it over the same terrain I use for testing the best electric mountain bikes , and there is no comparison – it doesn’t have the handling finesse for tight, twisty stuff.

If you have the skills, yes, you’d do it, but probably not in quite the style you’d like.

Sweet-spot pedalling helped by smart modes

The Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped eBike

The 10-51t gearing range is huge, but still I found myself succumbing to the temptation to stick to a few of the lower gears and default to switching between power modes.

It’s a habit that doesn’t get the most out of you or the motor, so I played with the onboard app and discovered it gives a readout for optimum cadence, turning green when you get it right.

That’s all to the good, though the weight means it’s not a bike you want to be caught out on without power. Moving between modes is quick and smooth, the motor picking up exactly where it needs to.

My only gripe is that when it tops out at 26km/h, the cut-off feels abrupt and the bike slows rapidly before kicking back to life. It’s not a seamless experience.

Accessories for the win

The Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped eBike is equipped with Supernova front and rear lights

The mudguards have good clearance and keep off most of what gets thrown up, even from wet, muddy tracks.

In fact, I came to appreciate all the commuting-specific accessories more than I expected. A kickstand may not feel that exciting, but once I used this rather than propping the weighty ebike against a wall, I was converted.

The built-in lights are powered by the battery, so there’s no reason to get caught without working illumination. The sturdy rack will bear up to 25 kilos and is compatible with most panniers .

Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped bottom line

The Trek Powerfly FS9 Equipped is an electric bike that makes you want to ride more – it allows you to take the more interesting routes less travelled on your commute and have fun on forest tracks at the weekend.

It would also be ideal for touring on long-distance tracks such as King Alfred’s Way in the south west of England, given its range, comfort and load capacity.

Embrace its niche and you’ll get the best out of this bike, and it could well get the best out of you as a rider – if you can afford it.

Electric Bike Review

Price: $5999.00 | Model Year: 2021 | A premium

A premium "do anything" full suspension electric bike that's equipped to handle pavement, trails, light mountain terrain, rain, shine, day, or night conditions. Available in five frame sizes for optimal fit, the XS and S come with 27.5" wheels and the M, L, and XL come with 29" wheels. Sold through one of North America's largest network of dealers. Trek and Bosch provide excellent support and warranty.

Custom made extra-wide plastic fenders are durable and quiet, very capable in off-road conditions. A sleek and sturdy rear rack provides 25kg (55lbs) of cargo capacity with pannier hangers on both sides and a removable top platform for trunk bags. Puncture resistant tires also feature unique black reflective stripes that combine safety with aesthetics.

Downtube-integrated battery pack and mid-drive motor keep weight low and center. Trek designed a "RIB" battery casing includes a handle for safe removal and transport. The battery doesn't rattle, and it can be charged on or off the bike with the fast 4 amp charger. Peformance Line CX motor is the most powerful from Bosch, but lightweight with a magnesium casing.

Highly adjustable air suspension front and rear with 120mm and 100mm travel respectively. Boost hub spacing and thru-axles increase wheel strength. Extra large 203mm hydraulic disc brakes with heat sinks and alloy cores deliver incredible stopping power. The biggest trade-offs here include the high price, smartphone display (that some may not like), louder motor operation, and increased weight (due to the high capacity battery and accessories).

Bikerumor

The 2021 Trek Powerfly full suspension e-MTBs blend European sensibility with modern trail capability for a unique e-mountain bike option.

Loam Wolf

If I had to think of one common theme that continually came up during our time with the Powerfly, that would be it—too damn fun. Over the months we’ve had this bike, we’ve done it all and it does it all with ease.

MBR

Oct 2018 · Alan Muldoon

Up hill or down, ebikes take an absolute beating, so the new Trek Powerfly 9 has a beefed up the parts package to handle the additional abuse.

Suspension, brakes and tyres are all on point. New battery layout is neat and easy to use.

Could have more generous reach measurements and shorter stems on all sizes.

New in this Powerfly generation are an advanced removable battery system, carbon fiber frames, purpose-built ebike components and the 150mm of travel in the LT model. - Mtbr.com

Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped

trek powerfly equipped 2022

With the Powerfly FS 9 Equipped, Trek want to unite supposed opposites and send standard bike categories into a well-deserved retirement. With its great all-round qualities, the Powerfly FS 9 Equipped has already secured victory in last year’s trekking ebike group test. But what does Trek’s ebike do better than other e-trekking bikes?

For an overview of the test fleet head to the group test: 9 fully equipped ebikes for trekking and adventure in our test

trek powerfly equipped 2022

The € 7,299 Trek Powerfly FS 9 unites supposed opposites and covers a wide range of applications. It’s equally suitable for commuting as for touring, both on and off road. Trek’s full-suspension ebike boasts a stylish aluminium frame, sporty silhouette and high-quality workmanship, all topped off with a flashy paint finish. The powerful Bosch Performance Line CX motor packs a punch in all situations, making it easy to negotiate steep ramps. This draws its power from a 625 Wh battery, which can be removed from the side of the down tube and carried to a charging point using a practical handle.

trek powerfly equipped 2022

With the Powerfly FS, you can replace the linear Tour support mode with the progressive eMTB Lite mode, which is optimised to provide increased range but still churns out plenty of power when needed. In times when almost everyone has a smartphone on them at all times, the Bosch SmartphoneHub allows you to use yours as a display for your Powerfly FS. This enables many clever functions such as a navigation, music player and call management, which can be controlled remotely via a bar-mounted remote.

trek powerfly equipped 2022

While the pannier rack with 25 kg load rating and practical MIK adapter makes it easy to attach panniers to your Trek Powerfly FS 9, the low(ish) permissible total weight of 136 kg calls for prudence when packing. A Supernova MINI2 headlight and E3 tail light ensure excellent visibility. Not as excellent is the rest of the everyday equipment, including the short plastic mudguards and flimsy kickstand. The Trek delivers plenty of riding fun and intuitive handling on long tours and yet is easy to maneuver even in more demanding riding situations. The 2.4″ Bontrager LT4 Expert tires ensure good traction and comfort both on hardpack and loose terrain but tend to clog up easily in muddy conditions. Bigger impacts are taken care of by the sporty and efficient suspension, which controls 120/100 mm travel at the front and rear, respectively.

Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped in review – A new generation of E-trekking bike

trek powerfly equipped 2022

With the Powerfly FS 9 Equipped, Trek have developed a unique concept that looks beyond conventional bike concepts and combines the best features of different worlds instead. Was the Powerfly FS 9 Equipped able to assert itself against the competition in our E-trekking bike group test?

Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped in review – Is this what the next generation of trekking bikes feels like?

It’s all a matter of balance: with the Powerfly FS 9, Trek have made it their mission to blur the boundaries between bike categories and combine the best of the eMTB and E-trekking bike worlds. Instead of prioritising particular riding characteristics, Trek’s full-suspension ebike was developed to blend supposed opposites and create a balanced and harmonious riding experience, both on- and off-road. To find out whether the concept actually works, we tested the flagship Powerfly FS 9 Equipped, which weighs 27.10 kg and retails for € 6,999. The upright pedalling position allows you to concentrate on the trail ahead and is pleasantly balanced, distributing the weight evenly between the hands and saddle – the perfect prerequisites for a great tourer! At the same time, the balanced weight distribution ensures good control over the front wheel and generates lots of traction at the rear. The Bosch Performance Line CX motor delivers plenty of power in all situations and is easy to modulate thanks to the progressive eMTB mode. Moreover, the Trek has a second progressive mode called eMTB-Lite, which is optimised to provide increased range. The intuitive handling makes it easy to lean the bike into wide corners and take advantage of the wide handlebars to dodge potholes and obstacles with quick and controlled turns. Although it’s not as playful as a trail bike, the Powerfly is great fun and easy to control on easy trails, getting you to your destination quickly and safely even when the route includes unpaved trail sections on challenging terrain.

Supernova MINI 2/E3

trek powerfly equipped 2022

Well-equipped for everyday life and excursions

The wide, high-volume 2.4” Bontrager LT4 Expert tires generate plenty of traction and feel predictable both on tarmac and loose terrain, inspiring huge amounts of confidence in all situations and only sliding out in muddy conditions. Shimano XT four-piston brakes with 200 mm rotors provide powerful and reliable deceleration. Even on long descents with a full pannier on the rack, they deliver consistent braking power and good modulation. While at 108 kg the Trek has a relatively low maximum payload, even with a 10 kg pannier on the rack it’s good natured and easy to manoeuvre, feeling significantly more composed than other bikes with a higher maximum payload ratings – i.e., the Kalkhoff Entice 5 Advanced+. The pannier rack features a practical MIK rail, which makes it easy to attach compatible bags and is approved for a 25 kg load. The Supernova MINI 2 headlight and E3 tail light look great and are powerful enough for night riding. Unfortunately, other accessories don’t live up to the otherwise high-quality spec of the Powerfly. The plastic mudguards are too short and can’t prevent mud from flying onto the person riding behind you and the kickstand makes a loud rattling noise.Trek-Powerfly-FS9-Equipped-Trekking-E-Bike-Test-Review-2021-mag-0007.jpg

Tuning tip: Bosch Help Connect plan with fall detection for solo adventurers

Stiff – Riding comfort onboard the Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped

The suspension of the Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped consists of a SR Suntour Zeron 35 fork and semi-integrated RockShox SID Lux Select+ shock, controlling 120 and 100 mm travel respectively. Although the numbers suggest a high level of comfort, the suspension is tuned for maximum efficiency which translates into a stiff and sporty rear end. On smooth tarmac, this converts each pedal stroke into efficient propulsion, without the rear end bobbing. Small bumps and vibrations are mostly dealt with by the high-volume tires while the suspension takes care of bigger hits, working actively and efficiently. As a result, the Trek is less comfortable than the Riese & Müller Homage but, in return, doesn’t feel as sluggish. The low-slung top tube and 150 mm Bontrager Line dropper post make it easy to get on and off the bike.

Propulsion first! The sporty suspension is tuned uncompromisingly for efficiency and riding fun, not for comfort.”

A smartphone as an on-board computer – The connectivity of the Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped in detail

One of the most striking equipment features of the Trek is the versatile Bosch SmartphoneHub. For short rides, this can be used without a smartphone. The basic 1.5” display shows all key data such as battery charge and speed. If you want other functions like navigation or fitness tracking, you can connect your phone to the SmartphoneHub via the COBI.Bike app and Bluetooth. While riding, the smartphone is firmly attached to a spring clip on the SmartphoneHub, where it can be operated via remote and charged via the hub itself. The COBI.Bike app offers a wide range of functions including voice navigation. If you tend to ride a lot on your own, you should take a closer look at Bosch’s Help Connect function (€ 4.99/month or € 39.99/year) with fall detection mode. This can notify your local emergency services in the event of a crash and is currently available in 11 European countries.

Quick off-road blast or long weekend ride? The Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped doesn’t say no to either!“

This is what the future of trekking looks like – The Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped in detail

Even whilst stationary, the Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped cuts a damn fine figure. Particularly striking are the sporty silhouette with its low-slung top tube and the elegant finish with its dark accents. Unfortunately, the chaotic cable management in the cockpit area spoils the otherwise tidy look. The Bosch Performance Line CX motor is neatly integrated into the frame and protected by a skid plate, while the 625 Wh battery is integrated into the down tube and can be easily removed to the side. The battery cover features Trek’s trademark carrying- handle while the battery cover and charge-port cover on the seat tube are both painted to match the colour of the frame. The charge port cover is easy to open and closes automatically – awesome! Not only the frame but also components like the handlebars, dropper post and BontragerLine Comp 30 wheelset, which Trek also use on their other performance-oriented eMTBs, make a great impression. In the smaller XS and S sizes, the Trek Powerfly comes with smaller 27.5″ wheels while all other sizes roll on big 29” wheels.

Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped conclusion

The Trek Powerfly FS 9 is exceptionally versatile and covers a wide range of applications, giving the concept of trekking a whole new meaning. The finely-tuned suspension and balanced pedalling position ensure sporty yet predictable handling and top riding fun while inspiring huge amounts of confidence on long off-road expeditions. The everyday equipment makes daily commutes and weekend trips more comfortable. The elegant look rounds off the successful concept of the Trek Powerfly FS 9, which comes out on top in our E-trekking bike group test, securing the coveted Best in Test.

In his previous life Rudolf was a dab hand at promoting innovation, putting his brain behind big-ticket patent assessments that easily ran into six-or-seven-plus figures. These days, the self-confessed data nerd’s role as editor at DOWNTOWN and E-MOUNTAINBIKE is no less exciting. Given his specialism in connectivity, Rudolf’s often placed on the front line of future mobility conversations, but he’s also big into testing new bikes–both on the daily as a committed commuter and intensively for our group tests. Russia’s BN-800 refuelled with mox: full mox core planned for 2022

!{Model.Description}

The first full refuelling of Russia’s BN-800 fast reactor at unit 4 of the Beloyarsk NPP with only uranium-plutonium mixed oxide (mox) fuel was completed during the recent scheduled maintenance outage, fuel company TVEL (part of Rosatom) announced on 24 February. The unit, which was shut down on 8 January, has been reconnected to the grid and has resumed electricity production. The first 18 serial mox fuel assemblies were loaded into the reactor in January 2020, and another 160 fuel assemblies have now been added to them. Thus, the BN-800 core is now one-third filled with innovative fuel and in future only mox fuel will be loaded into the reactor.

“Beloyarsk NPP is now one step closer to implementation of the strategic direction for the development of the nuclear industry - the creation of a new technological platform based on a closed nuclear fuel cycle,” said Ivan Sidorov, Director of the Beloyarsk NPP. “The use of mox fuel will make it possible to involve in fuel manufacture the isotope of uranium that is not currently used. This will increase the fuel base of the nuclear power industry tenfold. In addition, the BN-800 reactor can reuse used nuclear fuel from other NPPs and minimise radioactive waste by “afterburning” long-lived isotopes from them. Taking into account the planned schedule, we will be able to switch to a core with a full load of mox fuel in 2022.”

The fuel assemblies were manufactured at the Mining and Chemical Combine (MCC, Zheleznogorsk, Krasnoyarsk Territory). Unlike enriched uranium, which is traditional for nuclear power, the raw materials for the production of mox fuel pellets are plutonium oxide produced in power reactors and depleted uranium oxide (obtained by defluorination of depleted uranium hexafluoride - DUHF, the secondary "tailings" of the enrichment plant.

“In parallel with loading the BN-800 core with mox fuel, Rosatom specialists are continuing to develop technologies for the production of such fuel at the MCC,” said Alexander Ugryumov, vice president for research, development and quality at TVEL. “In particular, the production of fresh fuel using high-background plutonium extracted from the irradiated fuel of VVER reactors has been mastered: all technological operations are fully automated and are performed without the presence of personnel in the immediate vicinity. The first 20 mox-FAs incorporating high-background plutonium have already been manufactured and passed acceptance tests, and they are planned to be loaded in 2022. Advanced technologies for recycling nuclear materials and refabrication of nuclear fuel in the future will make it possible to process irradiated fuel instead of storing it, as well as to reduce the amount of high-level waste generated.”

Serial production of mox fuel began at the end of 2018 at MCC. To achieve this, broad industry cooperation was organised under the coordination and scientific leadership of TVEL, which supplies the mox-fuel to Beloyarsk NPP. Initially, the BN-800 reactor was launched with a hybrid core, partly equipped with uranium fuel produced by Mashinostroitelny Zavod in Elektrostal (Moscow Region), and partly with experimental mox assemblies manufactured at the Research Institute of Atomic Reactors (NIIAR) in Dimitrovgrad, Ulyanovsk region).
