The founders of Trek Bicycle believed there was special power in the name Trek. To them, it called forth the spirit of adventure and the promise of great things beyond the horizon. Their goal was to prove that an American brand could produce high-end, high-performance bicycles capable of competing with the best European and Japanese bikes.

Over the last 40 years, the little company from Waterloo, Wisconsin grew into one of the biggest manufacturers in the world, making more than one million bikes per year. It has supported some of the world’s top racers on their path to glory and introduced innovative bike technologies that have had a huge impact on modern cycling.

Trek’s huge catalog includes everything from race-ready road bikes, to trail-shredding mountain bikes, to reliable cruisers for your daily commute. But how do you know which Trek bike is right for you?

This overview will cover Trek’s extensive line of road, gravel, and cyclocross bikes, including Trek’s innovative technologies, model naming system, and most popular road models. Find out which Trek model fits best with your riding style, so that you can make an informed decision when buying your next road (or gravel) bike

Trek Madone

The Madone is Trek’s flagship aero road racing bike. Of Trek’s current road offerings, it has the longest history and has evolved the most. When introduced, the Madone was the successor to the 5900, a lightweight climbing bike for road races and grand tours like the Tour de France. As aerodynamic efficiency has become increasingly important in modern road racing, the Madone adapted to compete with bikes like the Specialized Venge, Giant Propel, and Cannondale SystemSix. The new generation of Madone features deep, aerodynamic tubes that reduce drag as much as possible. Since 2016, it’s been equipped with an IsoSpeed decoupler in the rear to also make it more comfortable.

[product-block handle="2021-trek-madone-slr-7-di2-m"/]

Who it’s for: Riders looking for maximum speed and aero gains on flat and rolling roads.

Trek Emonda

The Emonda is Trek’s lightweight road racing bike. When it was released in 2014, it was billed as one of the lightest production frames available. It has been a favorite of climbers and road racers who prioritize low weight above all else and it’s a good choice for riders who live in hilly and mountainous regions. As the Emonda has matured, it’s received some aerodynamic tube shaping to make it a more capable all-rounder. To maximize lightness and power transfer, the Emonda is the only Trek road bike without IsoSpeed.

[product-block handle="2019-trek-emonda-slr-9-disc-etap-l"/]

Who it’s for: Riders looking for a lightweight bike for climbing, racing, and all-around road riding.

Trek Domane

The Domane is Trek’s endurance road bike. It was famously developed, refined and raced by cobbled classics legend Fabian Cancellara. The key to Domane's rough road performance is Trek’s IsoSpeed technology, which increases compliance over bumps and absorbs vibration. Cancellara rode the Domane to multiple wins in the classics. Paired with more upright, endurance geometry, the Domane is perfect for riders looking to reduce fatigue on long rides and rough roads. The third-generation Domane can also fit larger tires up to 38mm, making it a great option for riders in search of a more road-oriented all-road or gravel bike.

Who it’s for: Riders looking for more comfort for long rides, rough roads, and light gravel.

Trek gravel and cyclocross bikes

Trek gravel bikes

Trek Checkpoint

The Checkpoint is designed for gravel rides that venture far away from paved roads. Relaxed geometry and clearance for wide 45mm gravel tires allow the Checkpoint to tackle everything from rough and loose gravel and light singletrack. Rack and fender mounts make it versatile for bikepacking and commuting, and additional mounts on the top tube, seat tube, and both sides of the down tube allow riders to carry extra gear and water on the frame. Horizontal sliding rear dropouts also give riders the option to run the bike singlespeed or tune handling by adjusting chain stay length. All carbon Checkpoint models also use a rear IsoSpeed decoupler to improve comfort and compliance. The latest generation Checkpoint, has IsoSpeed at the head tube as well.

[product-block handle="2021-trek-checkpoint-sl-7-l-4"/]

Who it’s for: Riders looking to tackle rough and loose gravel roads on their regular rides

The Boone is Trek’s race-ready carbon cyclocross bike. With cyclocross geometry, it excels in demanding off-road conditions like mud, sand, and grass. Front and rear IsoSpeed improves traction and comfort during tough races. The Boone can also serve as a gravel bike for riders who prefer the more agile feeling of cyclocross geometry.

[product-block handle="2019-trek-boone-rsl-s"/]

Who it’s for: Cyclocross racers looking for maximum performance

Trek Crockett

The Crockett is Trek’s aluminum cyclocross bike. It shares geometry with the high-end Boone cyclocross bike and will perform similarly on mud, sand, and grass. To reduce cost, it uses an Alpha aluminum frame instead of a carbon frame with IsoSpeed. Like the Boone, the Crockett is capable enough for most gravel riding.

Who it’s for: Cyclocross racers looking for a budget-friendly race bike.

[product-block handle="2019-trek-crockett-7-disc-l-1"/]

Trek road bike technology

Trek has a long history of innovation, and it has introduced several ground-breaking technologies to the sport. Here is a list of technology and features that are only found on Trek bikes.

Trek IsoSpeed

IsoSpeed first appeared on the Trek Domane endurance road bike. Its goal was IsoSpeed to improve compliance and reduce vibration over rough surfaces while maintaining a bike’s stiffness, efficiency, and handling characteristics. It’s not a suspension system but a “decoupler” system with elastomers that allow for a small amount of movement between key junctions like the seat tube and top tube.

Rear IsoSpeed decouplers allow the seat tube to flex independently of the top tube and absorb bumps. The top tube is split so the seat tube can pass through it. The tubes don’t directly touch but are joined by a horizontal shaft and two sealed cartridge bearings. Two round elastomer inserts between the tubes absorb vibration. Because of its simplicity, it adds minimal weight and requires little to no maintenance.

The newer (2016+) Domane and Boone bikes and the 2022 Checkpoint also have a front IsoSpeed decoupler. A rocker cup is used on top of the headset and the steerer tube is joined to the rocker cup by a horizontal shaft and two sealed cartridge bearings. This allows the steerer tube to flex, improving compliance through the handlebars.

There is also a slider on high-end Domane SLR and Madone SL and SLR models to adjust the compliance of the rear IsoSpeed decoupler to suit conditions and rider preferences.

IsoSpeed technology is used on the Domane, Madone (2018+), Checkpoint and Boone.

Hidden storage

Hidden storage

The 2020 Trek Domane was the first model to feature Trek’s Hidden Storage compartment, a convenient hollow storage area in the down tube. The down tube bottle cage mount is attached to a removable hatch that’s accessed with a small lever. Attached to that cover is a holder for a multi-tool, and inside the down tube is a nylon tool roll for holding spare tubes and tools.

Hidden storage is found on the 2020+ Domane SL and SLR,  and 2022+ Checkpoint.

Decoding Trek road bike model names

Trek has a huge selection of road bike models, and within every model, there is a range of build options. The hierarchy uses letters and numbers that can be confusing to uninitiated buyers. Here's your guide to decoding Trek’s naming and numbering system.

Road bike models use a series of letters and numbers (e.g. Trek Madone SLR 9) to indicate the frame material and component build. SLR and SL models are carbon fiber while ALR and AL models are aluminum.

The top-of-the-line SLR models use a higher grade 700-series OCLV carbon (improved 800-series carbon is used for the new 2021+ Madone and Emonda) which is lighter but more expensive than the 500-series OCLV carbon used for SL models.

ALR models use 300-series Alpha aluminum which is lighter but more expensive than the 200-series Alpha aluminum used on entry-level AL models.

The number used will range from 5 to 9: 5 is an entry-level build and 9 is top of the line. Higher numbered bikes cost more but are equipped with better components.

For example, an Emonda SLR 9 ($12,499) has a top-of-the-line 800-series OCLV carbon frame, SRAM Red eTap AXS drivetrain, and carbon wheels, stem, and handlebars. An Emonda ALR 5 ($2,099) has a more budget-friendly 300-series Alpha aluminum frame, Shimano 105 drivetrain, and alloy wheels, stem, and handlebars. In between are several Emonda models that offer different frame materials and component builds so riders can pick the bike that fits their needs and budget.

WSD stands for Women's-Specific Design. WSD will usually be indicated after a bike’s model name (e.g. Trek Madone WSD). These bikes featured women’s-specific geometry and components. Lately, Trek has phased out its WSD bikes as data and market trends have shown that men and women can easily fit on the same bikes. WSD bikes are still available on the used market, and Trek continues to offer entry-level women’s models, but in general, all Trek bikes are unisex.

Trek Project One

Trek Project One bike

Trek offers paint customization from the factory through its Project One program. Buyers ordering a new bike can select from a large library of colors and paint schemes to produce a one-of-a-kind bike. Project One bikes will have “Project One” listed with their model name, and also have it printed on the top tube. Depending on the paint scheme, it can increase a bike’s value.

Madone anagrams

Here’s a fun piece of Trek trivia. Trek’s flagship Madone road bike is named for the Col de la Madone, a legendary climb near the French Riviera that was a favorite training ground for Lance Armstrong. Trek gave its subsequent road bike models names that are anagrams of Madone (i.e. the letters are rearranged): Domane and Emonda.

Trek, of course, makes a lot more bikes than those listed here. If you need a triathlon bike, a basic urban bike, or an e-bike, Trek has plenty of options in every price category that can satisfy your needs. Check out our Trek collection to see all the Trek bikes we offer.

trek bikes

The humble beginning of Trek bicycles took place in the "red barn" - once a carpet warehouse - in Waterloo, USA. The first bikes were steel touring frames , but within three years the brand had expanded substantially.

Eventually outgrowing the barn, Trek moved into a much larger headquarters - still in Waterloo - in the year 1980. From there it began to manufacture road racing bikes, then in 1983 created its first mountain bike before moving into accessories come 1984.

Having started out in steel, Trek moved into developing aluminium bikes in 1985. The first Trek branded full carbon frame came in 1989 - the Trek 5000 had a frame weight of 1.5kg. It was built by an outside manufacturer and discontinued after a year. Trek made its own efforts at carbon, with an in-house production, in 1992 to much greater success.

Now, Trek offers the Madone (aero bike), Domane (endurance bike), Emonda (lightweight race bike) and Checkpoint (gravel bike) as well as the Boone cyclocross and Speed Concept time trial machine.

Trek's OCLV Carbon

You can trust Cycling Weekly. Our team of experts put in hard miles testing cycling tech and will always share honest, unbiased advice to help you choose. Find out more about how we test.

Trek's carbon bikes have always used their own patented 'OCLV carbon' - this stands for Optimum Compaction Low Void. It believes this carbon creates the best compromise between low weight and high strength and stiffness.

Trek bikes range

Optimum Compaction refers to the way sheets of carbon are layered into the mould, and optimised via heat and pressure - in Trek's opinion the two treatments are administered to the perfect ratio. Low Void refers to the minimisation of space between the layers of carbon, which might otherwise reduce strength and durability.

In 1995, Trek opened an independent facility inWhitewater, Wisconsin. The idea being that the Waterloo factory would work in frame development only. For those who want to customise their ride, the'Project One' custom paint programme arrived in 2001.

Trek's pro cycling support

Trek bikes range

Trek supported now disgraced American cyclist, Lance Armstrong, through his peak years. In 1997, it helped him sign with their sponsored team, US Postal Service Pro Cycling. He won his seven editions of the Tour de Frances on bikes bearing the brand name, but all of said wins were later taken from him following doping violations.

In 2014, the brand sponsored the Trek Factory Racing Team, now calledTrek–Segafredo. In that role, it provided bikes for high profile winners such as Fabian Cancellara and Alberto Contador,as well as Jens Voigt, and notably his Hour Record in September 2014.

In 2020, Trek continued to support the Trek-Segafredo men's and women's race outfits, two highly successful teams.

Trek's acquisitions

Over the years, Trek has made a number of high profile acquisitions. The most famous, perhaps, Gary Fisher bicycles - the mountain bike brand which it took over in 1993.

Later came Bontrager Cycles in 1995 and Electra Bicycle Company in 2014. Bontrager, now Trek's component and apparel brand, maintains the same name as does Electra, the creator of leisure bikes and accessories.

Trek's road bike models

Trek is able to offer a wide range of different bikes, each tuned to a slightly different purpose. Some model families are available in a selection of standards (SLR premium carbon, SL carbon, ALR premium aluminium and AL aluminium), and then these come with assorted levels of componentry to suit your price bracket.

To add even more depth to the range, Trek offers many models in two different 'fits'. The Madone and Émonda come as standard in an H2 (traditional) fit, but there are versions in what it calls 'H1' fit. This is more aggressive, shaving off about 30mm on the head tube to create a longer, lower ride. The Domane comes in an H2 'Endurance' fit, with a few models in 'Pro Endurance', again with a longer and lower stance on offer.

Here's a look at the key model families...

Trek Domane

Our expert review:

Reasons to buy

Reasons to avoid.

The Trek Domane was introduced in 2012. It was created to offer a comfortable ride, the key feature being an IsoSpeed decoupler which separated the seat tube from the top tube, thus reducing vibrations and fatigue.

In 2016 it gained theFront IsoSpeed, which helps to reduce vibrations at the front end without impacting handling. This came alongside a new slider, which alters the level of dampening offered by the rear.

In its most recent update , the Domane took notes from the Madone with an aero fork profile, whilst becoming more versatile thanks to clearance for 38mm tyres (without mudguards, 35mm with). It also gained a downtube compartment for stashing tools (or snacks!).

Though comfort is important to the Trek Domane, it's still a racing frame, and its prowess has been demonstrated by UCI WorldTour riders at major one-day Classics, such as Strade Bianche and the Tour of Flanders. The top Domane bikes come with an H1.5 fit, which was developed with the Trek-Segafredo teams to offer the optimal balance between aerodynamics and endurance.

The Trek Domane - available as a men's build or with women's specific componentry - is a fast selling model, which comes in a range of frame materials.

The Domane SLR uses the lightest carbon Trek offers, the SL is one step down, whilst the AL uses aluminium and is the cheapest of the range.

Trek bikes range

Trek Madone

The Trek Madone is quite another beast, and the bikes come built for men and women; the latter's models with women's saddles and narrower handlebars . With an aggressive geometry and stiffness to boot, it's a road race hero, and aerodynamics have become part of its lifeblood. When we tested five aero bikes , head to head, the Trek Madone came out fastest.

Modern Trek Madone's feature a high level of integration, with the cables tucked away yet reachable via an access point at the top of the down tube.Wind tunnel testing has helped Trek to create theirKVF (Kammtail Virtual Foil) tube shapes, used on the frame and fork. These unconventional tube shapes are designed to further reduce drag, helping the rider/bike unit to slice through the air efficiently.

Because being bumped around doesn't make you faster, the Madone also features an IsoSpeed decoupler at the seat tube and more recently an adjustable one at the head tube, which offers greater compliance whilst still being integrated to prevent adding drag.

The newest model, according to Trek, can offer 17 per cent more compliance through to 21 per cent more stiffness, depending upon your chosen setting. A damper at the seatpost is also said to cut rebound by 13 per cent. All of these stats add up to a bike that can be comfortable and stiff at the same time - and one that earned a place in our 2018 Editor's Choice awards.

The majority of the bikes come in a more relaxed 'H2' geometry, save for the Madone SLR, which is in an 'H1.5' fit - this is designed to allow riders to achieve an H1 fit or an H2, depending upon their set up.

Trek bikes range

Trek Émonda

Adding more depth to the Trek family is the Trek Émonda, launched in 2014. Designed to be a climbing bike, newer adaptations are capable of negotiating mixed terrains - with disc brakes available and tyre clearance to 28mm.

>>> Trek Émonda range explained

Trek continues to work on developing the Émonda, dropping the weight of the top end Trek Émonda SLR to 640g in a size 56cm (665g with discs) and 1091g for the Trek Émonda SL (1149g with discs). The weight difference is largely achieved by the use of700 Series OCLV carbon on the SLR, as opposed to 500 series on the SL.

The aluminium model has seen some major work and the result earned it a place in the Editor's Choice 2019 awards. The key characteristic we loved was the way it simply didn't look, or ride, like aluminium. A lot of this is down to Trek's 'Invisible Weld Technology' which increases the surface area of the frame, adding to strength and reducing weight. The ALR model's frame weight comes in at a competitive 1112g, or 1131g with discs, and it uses the brand's 300 Series Alpha Aluminium.

The carbon models are available in 'SLR' build or 'SL', the former being the lightest and the latter more affordable. The majority of Trek Émonda bikes cone in an 'H2' fit, but they can be purchased in an 'H1' geometry, if you choose the top end 'Race Shop' version.

There are a few nods to neatness and integration around, such as the use of 'Blendr Integration' which seamlessly mounts Bontrager’s cycling computer, Ionbike lights or even Garmin computers directly to the handlebars. On SLR versions there's ‘Control Freak Cable Management’ which allows for shifter and brake cables to be housed through the frame.

Trek bikes range

Trek Checkpoint

With gravel and adventure bikes a fast growing category, the Checkpoint is Trek's offering to fill that sector. The crucial element here is that both the SL and ALR frame options come fitted out with 35c gravel tyres, and can accommodate rubber up to 45c. They've all got internal cable routing, to ensure much stays out, whilst the higher end models use 'Control Freak' routing which is neater.

>>> Best gravel bikes: the top models reviewed

If you opt for the carbon SL model, you get vibration dampening from an IsoSpeed decoupler at the rear, too.  To provide stability and confidence on light trails as well as comfort on all-day adventures, the geometry is not as aggressive as the road bikes elsewhere in the range. Such all-day rides warrant plenty of kit, so there's mounts for racks and mounts. Similar to elsewhere in the range, there's AL, ALR and SL models.

Trek bikes range

Trek Speed Concept

Trek's Speed Concept time trial bike has been raced by the pros yet is still seen on the amateur race scene as a popular option.

>>> Check out Fabian Cancellara's 2016 Speed Concept

The frames use 500 Series OCLV Carbon, boasting the KVF (Kammtail Virtual Foil) tube shapes described in the Madone, plus a carbon fork with integrated brake and stem - the key goal being cutting through the air quickly. There's space to fit Trek's SC Draft Box and SC Sped Box, largely used by triathletes carrying snacks.

Trek bikes range

Trek Boone 5

Trek's got plenty of experience in the muddy realm of off-road cycling - and they've got a selection of cyclocross bikes. The Trek Boone 7 model comes with hydraulic disc brakes, a one-by crank and 12-speed cassette and they've all got Bontrager's own 33c cyclocross tyres.

The frame material is Trek's 600 series OCLV carbon, and there's front and rear IsoSpeed decouplers to help riders negotiate the mud without excess transfer of vibration. Combining the mud ready tyres, disc brakes, 'cross focused cable routing and geo into an aluminium package is the Trek Crockett family.

They key differentiation is the frame material, which is300 Series Alpha Aluminium, and there's no decoupler. However, it's still a performance bike that's ready to race.

Trek takes the fight to Garmin with new CarBack Radar rear light

Brand promises 'best in class experience compared to Garmin Varia and other competitors'

Trek CarBack radar rear light

Trek, known predominantly for its bikes, has long made a selection of genuinely excellent bike lights under its Bontrager subsidiary. Its Flare RT, for example, has long existed in our guide to the best bike lights , as has a selection of its front lights.

In recent years, that Bontrager name has been phased out somewhat, but if today's news is anything to go by, the product development continues apace, as the Trek range has an all-new flagship light on offer, complete with inbuilt radar technology, called the CarBack.

Now, I know what you're thinking, and much like the existing – longstanding – Garmin Varia RTL515, Trek's new product promises to combine the performance of the brand's market-leading rear light technology with a rear-facing radar that will alert you of approaching traffic from behind.

Trek says it will connect to your bike computer via ANT+ or an app on your smartphone (presumably via Bluetooth), and allow you to see where on the road behind you a car is at any given time, and how quickly they may be approaching.

Like its Flare RT rear light, Trek describes it as a Daytime Running Light, promising visibility from up to two kilometres away. Meanwhile, it also says the new inbuilt radar is able to detect vehicles at up to 240 metres.

Radar technology is well revered by the Cyclingnews product testers. It integrates naturally into riding habits and gives a real sense of increased safety, but Trek knows that it's got stiff competition from Garmin, whose Varia radar and rear-light combos have been on the market for over half a decade already.

But Trek remains confident. In the product's media release, Trek explicitly calls out its competitor by promising a "best in class experience compared to Garmin Varia and other competitors."

Those other competitors are currently few in number. Garmin's patent on the technology expired in 2021, according to reports by DC Rainmaker , and two lesser-known companies were both quick to jump on the bandwagon with Bryton launching the Gardia and Magene launching the Magicshine Seemee in the summer of 2022.

Trek's entry into the market might be a little delayed by comparison, but the on-paper specs appear competitive. It will feature USB-C charging, IPX7 waterproofing, and connectivity to all of the major bike computers . It will also boast a newly designed mount that Trek says will work with all bikes, including its Madone aero bike.

It will be priced at £169.99 / $199.99 / €199.99 / AU$299, and is available to buy at Trek Bikes right away.

Is the District Carbon Trek’s strangest-ever road bike… or even its coolest?

Is the District Carbon Trek’s strangest-ever road bike… or even its coolest?

First Published Apr 23, 2024

“We need a new bike in the range; any ideas?”

“Let’s do a belt drive model.”

“A flat handlebar urban bike?”

“No, let’s do this one with a drop handlebar. And let’s base it on the Madone 5 race bike.”

“Riiiight! This is with a hub gear, I take it?”

“No, let’s make it a single-speed.”

“You’re sure about this?”

“Absolutely. We’ll sell millions.”

Okay, Trek’s planning meeting might not have gone exactly like that, but it’s hard to imagine the scenario that led to the brand’s District Carbon, surely one of its most niche models ever.

Trek Carbon District - rear

District is the name that Trek gives to its range of city bikes that are designed to “make everyday riding easy, comfy and fun”. You know the sort of thing: upright geometry, flat handlebars, lights, mudguards…

The District Carbon, which we first wrote about at the end of 2009, was an anomaly. Essentially, Trek took its belt-drive District commuter bike and gave it an OCLV carbon frame. Trek did offer the District Carbon with a flat handlebar, but the one that we got in for review had a drop bar and it was quirky, to say the least.

Trek Carbon District - seatpin

The burning question: why?

Well, for a start, the Trek District Carbon was a very cool bike indeed. We've seen a lot of black carbon over the years – thousands of ’em – but few exerted the pulling power of the District Carbon. In terms of looks, it was understated, but it was still an intriguing proposition.

Costing £2,800 at the time, the District Carbon featured a limited edition carbon-fibre frame –Trek didn’t knock these babies out in great numbers – based on Madone 5 Series Pro race bike geometry. That’s the frame Alberto Contador won the 2007 Tour de France on although Trek gave it a new backend because, believe it or not, El Pistolero didn’t use a Gates carbon belt. The spacing between the rear dropouts needed to be wider and, of course, the frame needed to separate to allow the belt to be fitted and changed (a Gates belt isn’t separable like a traditional chain).

Trek Carbon District - sprocket

For the District Carbon, Trek opted to separate the frame at the rear dropout. Certainly, the method it came up with was both ingenious and user-friendly: an eccentric dropout that was undone via three Allen bolts on each side.

Like the Madone 5 Series bikes, the District Carbon was fitted with a Bontrager Race Lite fork with a carbon steerer. It was SpeedTrap-compatible meaning that you could run a digital sensor in one of the blades. The fork turned on a Cane Creek integrated headset.

Trek Carbon District - rear hub

The Gates Carbon Belt was fitted to an FSA Energy 55T chainset and a 22T rear sprocket, giving you a 66-inch gear. Brakes were Bontrager's very swish-looking Speed Limit design – cable-operated rim brakes, as was normal at the time – matched to Tektro road levers.

> Gates to award €100K to the first DH winner on a belt drive

Trek Carbon District - brake

As mentioned, the District Carbon was a single-speed so there’s not masses more spec to tell you about. All the finishing kit was from Trek's Bontrager brand, and it was none the worse for that. The Bontrager Race Lite Aero rims were fitted with Bontrager Race All Weather 23mm tyres – 23s still ruled the world in 2009 – the handlebar was a Bontrager Race VR-S with a comfortable bend, the stem was a Bontrager Race X Lite with 7° of rise, the saddle was a Bontrager Race Lite… You get the picture.

Trek Carbon District - stem

Coming in at just 6.96kg (15.3lb), the Trek District Carbon was lightweight, and you could have easily dropped a few more grams by swapping the wheels and handlebar. Speaking of the bar, we were a little confused by Trek’s decision to go for drops rather than a flat model. They seemed to slightly limit the bike's urban appeal.

That was the thing about the Trek District Carbon – it was a bike with a bit of an identity problem. The frame, the fork, and basically everything about the way the District Carbon was set up said (this bike was way too cool to scream) “performance road machine”. On the other hand, the single-speed belt drive was all about urban riding – in which case Trek could have ditched the handlebar and levers and shed some weight and cost in the process.

Trek Carbon District - bars

In some ways, the District Carbon didn’t make a whole lot of sense, and the fact that it has long gone from the Trek range tells its own story (although Trek still offers loads of urban bikes, of course, including models equipped with Gates belt drives). In retrospect, maybe its strangeness was all part of the lasting appeal. After all, we’re still talking about it 15 years later.

I strugle to think other as cool bikes as this. If my city was flatter and I fitter, I would drool over it.

Super cool black finish ✔

Maintenance free belt drive ✔

Single speed at the era when single speed was super cool and even see Batman's sidekick star in a themed movie ✔

Agressive fast geometry ✔

Let's admit it, this is K.I.T.T. car on pedals really.

Yes, probably didn't sell many but it could work as a halo product for the commuter line.

In general, I am very sorry for the reluctance of bike manufacturers to throw drop bars or even bullhorn at city bikes. Be bold guys!

That bike with clearance for 33c, tracklocross style, could be a winner.

‍ One of the best entry-level bikes that Trek ever made was the Alpha 1.1. Even though Trek no longer produces this gem, the bike still has plenty to offer.

Made from 2011 - 2017, the Trek Alpha 1.1 sought to attract a new generation of riders to the love of cycling. The Alpha was the least expensive of the Trek lineup, which helped it achieve a reputation for being a great value. The bike was known for being lightweight, fast, and very durable.

Battling years of negative press, Trek Bicycle Corporation found itself in full-blown damage control in early 2010. Their alleged involvement in doping plagued them (which their team leader, Lance Armstrong, admitted to using a couple of years later), coupled with a very public lawsuit over the leadership of Lemond Cycles had left a sour taste in the hearts of the public. To counter its tarnished public image, Trek introduced an entry-level bicycle to try and attract new riders. Their mission was to produce a higher quality road racer without the expensive price tag. So, to accomplish this task, Trek applied its research data and design experience to the task and worked with its far eastern counterparts to produce a lightweight, durable bike that could go very fast.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

‍ What’s So Special about the Trek Alpha 1.1?

The Trek Alpha is now only available used, mainly on eBay or with some bike dealers who have a good consignment program.

The Alpha 1.1 was a Quality Build.

Even though the 1.1 was designed at Waterloo, Wisc (where Trek headquarters are located), the bike was not assembled inside the US. While many Americans prefer items produced in the good old US of A, the fact that Trek continued to use its factories in China and elsewhere isn’t necessarily wrong.

For years, Trek had depended on these builders to consistently produce many high-end premium road racers. Using these same workers meant that the bikes would likely show a high degree of excellence, precisely what Trek needed to combat an increasingly agitated riding community.

The frame was made from aluminum tubing with an attractive glossy finish. Even though carbon fiber was becoming all the rage for high-end performance bicycles, aluminum was a much cheaper resource. The primary benefit of an aluminum frame is that it provides excellent strength qualities while at the same time costing less, meaning that the bicycle price can be contained. Trek used its extensive racing research to push the aluminum frame to the limit, keeping the weight down while still holding onto the structural rigidity needed for most riders.

The folks at Trek must have felt pretty good about the frame because they offered a lifetime warranty with every purchase, which was virtually unheard of at the time.

The Trek Alpha 1.1 utilized the traditional H2 top-tube sloping, which is supposed to be the optimal riding position (according to Trek’s research). The steep upright angle of the tube enhances the rider's overall comfort, making it easier for cyclists to stay on task and enjoy the ride. The designers knew that the more comfortable the ride, the longer a cyclist would stay on their bike, which is precisely what the company wanted. The design shows how committed Trek folks were to fashioning a bike to appeal to a wide range of buyers.

Shimano Claris shifters and derailleurs provide the effective movement of gears when needed. Most bike reviews indicate the ride is soft, with no issues moving up and down hills through the gear ratios. While the eight gears might have been less than a professional racer would use, it is more than adequate for normal cycling. (The aluminum frame adds extra weight that might create issues for riders attacking inclines).

The wheels are Bontrager AT-750 double-walled alloy rims with 700c x 25 tires. The narrow tires lend themselves to increased speed and reliable handling when navigating corners.

Interestingly enough, the Bontrager is Trek’s primary tire supplier, and the tire is manufactured in Waterloo, Wisc. The Alpha 1.1 also has room for wider tires for additional grip on wet or muddy surfaces. There is also room for a rear rack or mudguards should their installation be necessary.

The shifter and rear brake cables are run alongside the downtube and provide effective braking and shifting. Most professional bikes run the cables inside the center tube to minimize wind drag and increase aerodynamics. However, the Alpha 1.1 seems content to run the brakes alongside the tubing rather than inside. (My preference is inside the tubing, as an integrated cable system, but this requires additional attention during the manufacturing process and increases the cost). Trek went with a parallel cable system to save dollars during the manufacturing process, and this is a win for the casual rider, who isn’t worried about shaving second off a stage time.

The seat is also a Bontrager Affinity which is soft enough to add comfort without discomfort on longer rides.

The Alpha 1.1 was the Least Expensive Bike Trek Made.

When it was introduced, the Alpha 1.1 was offered as the best value in bikes. Trek saw a need to create a market for new riders. By keeping the manufacturing costs to a minimum (including cheaper labor costs overseas), the company decided to pass those savings along to potential buyers.

The bike was priced well below the $500 mark, which made it easily affordable for most families. Now, the average American who felt the urge to channel their inner Lance Armstrong could have a bike similar to the Trek-Segafredo pro team used.

The Alpa 1.1 Performed Very Well

It didn’t take long for the researcher of the Alpha to discover that those who purchased the bike and rode it loved it. The reviews recognize that the short wheelbase made for a bike that was quick enough to chew up the pavement, handle well while cornering, and stay in control on the wet or less-than-perfect pavement.

The earliest renditions of the Alpha 1.1 had an aluminum fork and frame that tended not to dampen the bumps and jolts of imperfect road surfaces. While carbon forks and frames do a better job smoothing out the pavement, this complaint was not enough to make riders consider other models or take the Alpha off their list. However, the later model year Alpha (2017) shows a Trek carbon fork, which helped with some of the complaints about the ride. (Again, my preference here is to have an adjustable fork that allows the rider to quickly switch to suspension settings to handle rougher terrain, but this was something the folks at Trek were unwilling to do on their early road racers).

There have been some complaints as to the weight of the bike, but these were primarily complaints by riders who were used to riding a carbon-fiber frame. For these riders, the bike’s ride might seem chunky, particularly on steep inclines, where the additional weight can quickly come into play. Even though the bike may be harder to move uphill than other competing road bikes, the ride is just about what you might expect for its price point.

Why Did Trek Stop Making the Alpha 1.1?

For several years, the Trek Alpha 1.1 was a trendy bike for the company. Still, unfortunately, after the initial excitement for the bike wore off, Trek realized that buyers were flocking to other competitors producing better bikes. The emergence of smaller bike companies pushed Trek to drop Alpha 1.1 in favor of other lines, such as the FX series or the Emonda lineup.

At about the same time, Trek and Segafredo partnered to sponsor an International Racing Team. In 2022, the team has over 31 riders on the men’s side and 14 riders on the women's. The teams dominate the racing circuit and are almost always on the leaderboards.

Where Can I Purchase an Alpha 1.1?

Even though Trek still carries an image of the 1.1 on its website, the bike is not available to be shipped from the company. The only way to secure an Alpha 1.1 is through eBay, or another online site selling used bikes.

  • A very reasonably priced entry-level bike
  • The bike is well-made, with a lot of research behind it
  • The company has an incredible resume in road racing
  • Aluminum frame holds up well
  • Perfect looking bike.
  • No longer being made
  • Trek losing ground to other competitors
  • Click on Ebay to find out the latest price.

What kind of Bikes is Trek Making Now?

Even though Trek no longer produces the Alpha 1.1, the company still has a wide selection of bicycles for every discipline. The company makes a Marlin series, an excellent beginner bike for mountain and trail riding. Trek suggests the Edmonda series or the FX-1 for an entry-level bike for road riding. Trek also has a large selection of electric bikes. The FX+ is priced at around $2500, while the Domaine+ SLR retails for around $8500. which are not cheap but are great rides nonetheless. Here are some of our recommendations for the best bikes for entry-level riders in the Trek lineup.

  • Entry Level Road/City Bike - FX 1
  • Mountain Bike - Marlin 7
  • Electric Bike - FX+
  • Boy’s Bike - Roscoe 20
  • Girl’s Bike - Wahoo 24

High carbon frame quality for the money. It is worthy to do upgrades as needed. -- Roll Off Dumpsters

None so far

Light, strong, tall enough for my long legs with the most impressive shifting mechanism I've seen and it is fast!!!

It's short in the front, so I feel like I'm moving head first into traffic so I swapped out the handlebars for a taller aluminum pair. I'm much happier with it now.

I just bought this bike used from a retailer in Miami. I nearly bought an English touring bike but the owner answered the phone leaving me alone. I picked up both bikes and carried them around for a minute simulating carrying it up a flight of stairs. I fell in love with the Trek. I don't race so I took off the racing tires, handlebars and pedals. What an amazing street bike it has become. This is my first graphite, it's tall, fast and I am delighted with it! For those considering a Trek racer, I am over 50, female, frugal and active. So if you are too I recommend the 5000!!

Stiff and light and very responsive and can carry a heavy man.

Bought this bike new in 2003 and have put 15K + miles on it in races and mostly training rides throughout Texas and New Mexico. I liked the paint scheme over a specialized, which was a little lighter by .3 lbs.. This one weighed in at 16.6 lbs in a 54cm frame. Talk about a smooth ride. I road a Schwinn Letour 50 miles one day when I was in my late 20's and thought I would die even though I had been riding 20 miles several times a week. At 50, after buying this bike and riding if for a couple of weeks, I rode 60 miles and could not believe that I did not die! lol A great bike for my first carbon bike and one that I will keep until I cannot ride anymore. Thanks Trek for a great ride! I am now in the process of upgrading this one into a compact x 11 speed to ride in Thailand where I now live. For the money, I cannot find a replacement Trek near as light as this one so that is why I am upgrading this frame.

Am located in rancho bernardo am a student and I have a trek 5000 for sale exellent condition 1000 for it thanks will mail it u pay the cost thank you.

Comfort, Durability, Nice to look at.

Some of the original parts, seat, wheels etc.

I have had this ride now for 5yrs, and I always threaten to upgrade, never have and probly never will. The $2300 are cdn funds. This ride and I have an understanding...it's great when you get to this level with a ride. When I first got it I went down twice...HARD...lots of skin left on asphalt and destoyed so nice kits. The bike suffered a few minor scatches that Mercedes silver touched up nicely. I cycle about 4500k per year, lots of hills and distances. This ride preforms awesomely. Its a frame that, over time, will lend itself to many nice upgrades without dropping a small fortune on a new ride.

None really, tried this and that but kept coming back

High carbon frame quality for the money. It is worthy to do upgrades as needed.

Bontrager components, except the seatpost

I bought this bike in Sept 2004, as a 2005 model. It is the OCLV 120 frame with OCLV 110 fork. So, after more than 5 years of training and racing on it, I guess, I can give my feelings about it. This review will be more on the frame which is worthy of future upgrades, than in the bontrager components, which I think, are of low quality in general, at leats in these price range. I've put on the miles (2500-3000/year) and the frame looks to be able to take it in stride, able to hold true over the long haul on rough training roads. The best advantage about this bike geometry is its ablity to climb, and accelerate in intervals as go up.

no much to compared

The price for what you get..... Compared to my Madones, it really is a great bike !!!!!!

The stock saddle and the Bontrager Select wheels.... But the wheels are great for training......

I currently own 4 Madones (3 with OCLV 55 and 1 with OCLV 110) and got this bike as a training bike.... Wow was I surprised on how well the TCT carbon rode.... The only change out I did was the seatpost and saddle (Switched to Bontrager X-lite post and Selle San Marco Aspide Composite saddle).... Very surprised on how well this bike performs for the price..... Plus the silver paint looks great !!!!! Compared to my Madones, I really love this bike.... Now I am going to build it with DA 7800 and put on Bontrager X lite wheels.....

2007 Trek Madone 6.9 SSL Stock, 2007 Trek Madone 6.9 SSL Project One, 2005 Trek Madone SSL, 2005 Trek Madone 5.9 SL, 2003 Trek 5900, 2003 Trek 5200

smooth, shimano ultegra componentry is nice

seat is horrible, and bontrager tires are crap

had it for 2 years and have had zero problems, great value for money for a full carbon bike. Have had 2 quite bad crashes on it and it's still going strong! Great first all carbon bike

giant alloy

Smooth shifting on flats and hills.

Changed seat after first ride. Bontrager tires are fair. Changed them out within 2 months.

My first "real" bike coming off Trek 370. Steel frame and carbon fork. Great price for all carbon frame, 105 components. Did not come with a triple. Changed to compact crank. Smooth ride on all types of roads.

Road damping, triple cranks

Heavier than I expected for a carbon bike. My Cannondale aluminum is much lighter. Suspect the heavier weight are from the stock Bontrager Select wheelset. Stock seat was horrible, numbingly painful and swapped it out. Paint and faux carbon decals covered the natural beauty of carbon fiber.

My first all carbon bike. Like how it smooths out a ride. Especially the longer rides. Initially did not like having triple cranks and was going to change to standard double cranks. But after several hill rides decided to keep it.

Only one word is needed to sum up and exemplify why Lectric’s One is a bike that shouldn’t be overlooked: Pinion. You will know what that means if you’re a die-hard bicycle tech nerd. But for the uninitiated, Pinion is a German brand that manufactures high-end and fully enclosed gearbox units—sort of like an internally geared hub, except mounted in the bottom bracket. Most consumers are unfamiliar with the brand because Pinion products usually wind up on very pricey and niche bikes.

So, this makes a Pinion system on a $2,000 commuter e-bike very exciting, especially since it’s a part usually reserved for bikes triple that price.

How did Lectric make the pricing work to include a Pinion gearbox on such an affordable model? Lectric combined Pinion’s C1.6 6-speed gearbox with a 750-watt rear-hub motor. (The gearbox and motor are combined into a single unit on pricier Pinion-equipped e-bikes.) Additionally, Lectric stuck to the much cheaper cadence sensor for motor engagement rather than go the costlier torque sensor route. However, Lectric enhanced the cadence sensor with 96 magnets versus the 12 typically used on the brand’s other models.

Lectric One eBike

One eBike

Lectric then joins the Pinion gearbox and hub motor with a Gates Carbon belt set-up (instead of a standard chain drive). The belt doesn’t require chainlube and runs cleanly, quietly, and efficiently. With the bike’s gears enclosed by the Pinion system, these two bits of tech help make the Lectric ONE essentially free of daily maintenance.

Riding the One, I was quickly enamored with the Pinion system’s smoothness and precision—nothing else on the market is quite like it—and the hub motor was impressively powerful. However, while the improved cadence sensor was better than others I’ve used, it was still very much a cadence sensor. Like most cadence sensor-equipped bikes, the One feels disconnected from the motor. This feeling is from a combination of lag (though very slight in this case) and because the force put into the pedals does not relate to the motor’s output. Both factors result in a slightly unnatural motor response.

With that said, it didn’t take long to get used to how the One delivers its motor assist. I’m happy to take a cadence sensor to get a Pinion gearbox and Gates belt drive at such a reasonable price. The One is an ideal option for riders seeking a dependable, low-maintenance, all-weather commuter bike with the bells and whistles of a bike normally costing significantly more. — Dan Chabanov

BEST BUDGET E-CARGO

rad power rad wagon 5

The Rad Wagon is now in its fifth iteration and has introduced countless people to the joys of a long-tail cargo e-bike. Since the Rad Wagon was one of the most affordable options in the category, it allowed many riders to try out a bike type that, while incredibly practical, often has a high cost of entry. The downside of that low price was that the Rad Wagon suffered from cheap and unreliable brakes, not something you want on a bike that can carry you plus two passengers.

Rad Wagon 5

The good news is that the newest iteration of the Rad Wagon has improvements in its standard equipment and only a modest price increase. For the extra $400 over the Rad Wagon 4, the new bike gets a suspension fork and smaller wheels with much wider tires. The Rad Wagon 5 also uses better lights (that now include turn signals) and, most crucially, a set of powerful hydraulic disc brakes. The Tektro hydraulic disc brakes are the most critical update to the bike and deliver reliable stopping power. All the updates combine to turn the Rad Wagon from a bike we recommended primarily based on price into one we confidently endorse as a great alternative to pricier cargo e-bike models. — D.C.

BEST SUPER COMMUTER

specialized turbo tero x bicycle parked on a street

The Turbo Tero X is a bike I can enthusiastically recommend to any cyclist.

This e-bike is so good and so versatile, and so damn handy it will become the bike you use most. If forced to describe it, I’d say the Tero X is a full suspension mountain bike with a class three motor made for everyday doings. The Tero X‘s upright position, flat bar, knobby tires, and suspension provide sure-footed multi-surface capability. And even on pavement, the bike’s suspension is a huge boon.

Hitting a pothole or bridge expansion joint hit at 28mph on a rigid 50-pound e-bike is uncomfortable at best; at worst, the rider can also cause the rider to get awkwardly bucked and lose control of the bike. The Tero X’s suspension makes for a more comfortable, safer, and more relaxed ride.

Another mountain bike feature that has real-world practicability is the dropper post. Dropping the saddle makes it possible to stand flat-footed at traffic lights and makes it easier to mount and dismount the bike with street clothes.

Specialized Turbo Tero X

Turbo Tero X

Specialized has long made excellent e-bikes, and the brand’s in-house developed motor (and accompanying apps) are some of the best. The motor offers a lot of torque with little noise or vibration, with a natural feeling tune that’s never jerky or awkward.

The claimed range from the 710Wh battery is 75 miles in Eco mode. But during my time with the Tero X, I hardly used Eco mode and just Turbo’d everywhere, which resulted in 25 or so miles of range. While that doesn’t seem like much, I found it was more than plenty for numerous trips around my small town before I needed to worry about plugging in. And recharges are fairly quick—even just plugging it in for 30 minutes was enough to erase any range anxiety.

The Tero X 6.0 is fully equipped with lights (the headlight puts out 1,000 lumens in high beam mode—more than enough to see clearly on dark roads and paths at night), fenders, a rear rack, and a kickstand.

The suspension fork precludes many front rack options—though options do exist—and the rear rack limit is just 44 pounds. So, this isn’t a cargo bike or something intended for hauling a week’s worth of groceries for the family. Instead, the Tero X is a bike for going places. It’s a bike that makes you want to leave the car at home—because going by bike is, as we all know, the best way to get anywhere. — Matt Phillips

BEST MID-TAIL E-CARGO BIKE

xtracycle rfa parked on a brick sidewalk

Xtracycle designed the RFA (short for Ready For Anything) to evolve around the changing needs of daily life. Its adjustable dropouts allow you to shorten and lengthen the wheelbase by 5.5 inches if needed. The shorter layout (dubbed the RFA Sport) comes with a smaller rear deck. We opted for the RFA Utility with its longer-length rack (might as well have more capacity, right?), but you can always change the wheelbase length in about an hour. Plus, Xtracycle’s website has a seamless interface for selecting accessories and custom options for your bike when ordering.

The bike feels sturdy and smooth. Its 2.5-inch wide tires dampen road vibration and make you feel like you can run over almost any pothole or cracked pavement, an admirable trait on a bike designed to carry hundreds of pounds of cargo. The steel frame and fork, combined with a front thru-axle, gave our test bike a precise and confidence-inspiring steering feel. Our test bike featured the Shimano STEPS EP6 motor, which assists up to 28 mph. Under daily riding conditions, however, the motor tops out around 23-25 mph.

RFA

The previous version of this bike did not come with stock fenders, but Xtracycle remedied this and now includes rear wheel skirts and footrests. Overall, the RFA is a smooth, solid-feeling bike ready for years of riding. Xtracycle backs this with a lifetime warranty for the frame and fork and a two-year warranty for the Shimano STEPS system.

The RFA exists in a crowded market of direct-to-consumer e-bikes. But as a cargo bike brand, Xtracycle has been around for much longer than many of its competitors. Debuting its first product, a cargo bike extension kit, in 1999. So, the brand knows the market and how riders use its bikes.

This bike is a well-thought-out and executed product made for the real world, not simply some nice-looking specifications listed on a website or feature sheet. I thought highly enough of the bike that, while I have tested many great e-cargo bikes, the RFA is the first one I used to take my daughter along for a ride. — D.C.

BEST BELT-DRIVE COMMUTER

riding the ride1up prodigy v2 in rain

Ride1Up‘s second-generation Prodigy commuter is an excellent follow-up to the brand’s original version. The new V2 retains the V1’s excellent Brose mid-drive motor and internal battery while featuring an improved aesthetic design, an air-spring suspension fork, a 9-speed drivetrain, and better brakes for the reasonable price of $2,395.

For an additional $300, Ride1Up offers the Prodigy V2 equipped with a Gates belt drive and Enviolo stepless gear rear hub. And for us, this is the package to buy.

A good commuter bike is practical, easy to use, and no fuss. It‘s something you ride to work, school, or errands around town, not something you expect to spend considerable time maintaining or repairing. For these reasons, many commuters choose a singlespeed bike—but even singlespeed chains require maintenance.

Prodigy V2

Belt-drive bikes offer advantages over traditional chain-type drivetrains, with an upside being their low maintenance—they do not require chain lube, stay remarkably clean, and rarely require adjustment or tightening. Plus, they are stealthily silent and look great.

Unfortunately, belt drives require an internal hub to shift gears—and internal hubs weigh a lot and have limited gear ranges. Thankfully, Ride1Up used Enviolo’s internal gear Trekking rear hub that features continuously variable, stepless gearing and a 380% gear range. The CVT allows riders to shift while stopped or under load and is super smooth.

While almost $2,700 is not chump change for a commuter bike, the Prodigy V2 is a steal compared to similarly-equipped Specialized and Gazelle models priced at $4,000. — Tara Seplavy

BEST HYBRID E-BIKE

riding a velotric t1

Hybrid bikes combine elements of road bikes (lightweight frame, 700c wheels) and mountain bikes (flat handlebar, wide-range gearing, and sometimes suspension). Since these bikes do not fully commit to either discipline, hybrids get poo-pooed by some cycling snobs and purists. And that‘s a damned shame because their combination of traits can make hybrids the best choice for many riders’ commuting, fitness, or leisure riding needs.

Weirdly though, while e-bikes currently command a lot of attention from bike brands (and space in their product portfolios), if you’re seeking an electric hybrid bike you will find stunningly few choices. Instead, many brands focus on utility e-bikes or models with wide tires for commuters or recreational riders, relying on motor power to negate the heft of the extra equipment.

Velotric T1 e-Bike

T1 e-Bike

Luckily, there are a few options for hybrid e-bikes. And one of the best I’ve recently tried is Velotric’s T1. This bike is sporty and quick and its handling feels similar to some road bikes. Some of that snappy ride feel is from the T1’s 350W rear hub motor, some from the road bike-like geometry, but a lot is from the weight. At 37.1 pounds, the T1 is on the light side for e-bikes (especially at this price) and doesn’t weigh that much more than many non-assist hybrids.

Velotric also packs a slew of tech features into the T1 that you wouldn‘t expect for a bike at $1,800. On the riding side, the T1 employs a torque sensor for a smooth and natural pedaling feel and a light-sensing headlamp that turns on when it gets dark. For security features, the T1 features a fingerprint lock on the bike and GPS tracking and theft alert via Velotric‘s app.

While many brands have apps for their e-bikes, Velotric‘s app on your phone pulls double duty as the T1’s display unit. Personally, I don‘t like my iPhone sitting on my stem and prefer a dedicated LCD (even if only a basic one). But I understand that many folks like this feature and they can use the app for bike data and navigation. — T.S.

BEST FOLDING E-BIKE

brompton c line electric folding bike parked in stairwell

Folding e-bikes are a hot category right now, with brands like Aventon, Rad Power, Lectric, and One-Up offering these models. But unfortunately, in reality, most of these bikes are enormous (even when folded) and heavy. That’s because many of these bikes start with (more or less) a full-size e-bike and simply add a hinge joint to the frame to handle the folding.

Brompton takes a decidedly different approach—electrifying its already excellent folding bike by adding a 250-watt motor to the front wheel. The result is a truly portable folding e-bike. One that you can easily carry and stow on a bus or a crowded commuter train. While the battery and motor add some heft to the C-Line, the 38-pound weight of the bike feels practically featherweight compared to typical e-bikes, which are routinely over 50 pounds.

Brompton C-Line Electric

C-Line Electric

If your bike trip is short enough and you don’t want to carry the extra heft of the power pack, the Brompton is one of the very few e-bikes that’s genuinely pleasant to ride unpowered. And this is where the C-Line’s 12-speed drivetrain comes in handy. The C-Line might be somewhat confusing if you’re accustomed to most bike gearing—it’s not a traditional 12-speed cassette at the rear. Instead, the Brompton uses an internal 3-speed hub paired with a 4-speed rear derailleur. Multiply four times three, and you get to Brompton’s 12-speeds.

The bottom line is that if you need an e-bike that folds small enough to sit under your desk at the office or fit into an overhead luggage bin on a train, the Brompton C-Line is your best option. It doesn’t hurt that the bike rides great and has clever engineering. — D.C.

BEST KID'S BIKE

trek wahoo path kids bike parked against a purple wall

Picking bikes for pre-teens is tough! Kids of this age are often too tall for traditional “kid‘s bikes” (usually aimed at younger audiences or are styled on BMX bikes), making them hard to ride for longer distances. But, they‘re also often too small for XS-sized adult bikes (that are too big and unwieldy).

Several brands introduced new models over the past few years designed for 8 to 12-year-olds to fill this underserved niche. Unfortunately, many are pricey or intended mainly for mountain biking (with fat knobby tires and suspension) versus bike paths and multi-use trails.

Trek’s new Wahoo Path bikes are a great option for pre-teens to use around the neighborhood, commuting to school, or riding with family. Trek offers the Wahoo in two wheel sizes: 24-inch (riders 4’3” to 4’11”) and 26-inch (riders 4’10” to 5’3”), and each is available in three colors. The bikes feature aluminum frames and forks, 2-inch wide tires, and wide-range 8-speed gearing.

Wahoo Path

The Wahoo Paths incorporate some solid attention to detail often overlooked by brands. An example is Trek’s use of Microshift’s Acolyte shifter. Designed for smaller hands, this trigger shifter is easier to use than shifters intended for adult hands. Another is the gear range—it uses an 11-38T cassette paired with a 28T chainring. This provides low gearing to get up some hills while also tall enough to ride on flat roads or the bike path.

Additionally, Trek built the Wahoo Path’s frame with standover in mind (without resorting to a step-through configuration). This allows kids to use the bike for (hopefully) a couple of years before they grow to another side. And since none of the frames or colors are overly boy- or girl-oriented, the bike is easier to pass to another young rider or sell when your child outgrows it. — T.S.

Find a Kid-Friendly Bike Park or Pump Track

Bike parks and pump tracks are a fun and unique way to get kids to play and exercise outside! They’re also a great place to instill a love of riding at a very young age.  Riders of all ages love exploring the endless adventures bike parks offer, whether on their balance bike or pedal bike.

Markers are color-coded.  RED = BMX Track, BLUE = Indoor Bike Park, ORANGE = Outdoor track, LIGHT BLUE = Pumptrack

This map is not complete without your help! Please submit any kid-friendly bike parks or pump tracks in your area to [email protected] and we’ll add them to the list!

Skateparks can also be a good place for bike riding, but while they work great for balance bikes (with the exception of the bowls), they don’t work well for a traditional, non-BMX bike.  As a result, we’ve only listed indoor and outdoor bike parks and pump tracks (although bike parks often include a skateboarding park as well). Scooters are also fun at skateparks and pumptracks.

If you need more proof about why bike parks and pump tracks are so awesome for kids, check out our 2-year-old toddler rocking bike parks across America in the video below!

Review: Trek Fetch+ 2

One of the things that can be intimidating about buying a cargo ebike is how unfamiliar they feel. Whether a bike is designed with weird geometry and wheel sizes or odd features for heavy hauling, every ride can feel unfamiliar.

For traditional cyclists who want to haul a grocery store trip’s worth of groceries home but don’t want to mess with technology they’re unfamiliar with, the Trek Fetch+ 2 is a decent option. It’s more expensive than some of our favorite alternatives, but it has an easy-to-ride step-through design, well-made components, and great plastic buckets (and other accessories) for storage.

There are bikes with more advanced features for the money, but even after I spent a summer riding the Fetch+ 2, it barely needed a tune-up. For a modern cargo ebike with a classic cargo bike maintenance schedule, it might be worth spending a bit more cash.

On the Road

The Fetch+ 2 is the smaller of Trek’s two latest cargo ebikes, which includes the box-fronted Fetch+ 4 ($8,500) , which is more oriented toward toting around dogs and children in between groceries and beer.

The Fetch+ 2 instead is a more traditional step-through cargo bike that employs a myriad of attachments, most notably two plastic panniers that hang off an extended rack on the rear. You can get a padded seat cover for the rear to let friends hold on and ride, or mount a couple kids’ seats behind you, but I’d still probably use this bike more for errands than transporting little ones.

Side view of black and silver bike with 2 containers attached near the rear wheel and 2 containers attached near the...

As an objet d’art , the bike is simple and unassuming, which is ideal for a bike this expensive. The battery is integrated into the frame, but a sizable bulge means nobody will fail to notice it's an ebike. You can get it in three colors. I liked the black of our review unit, but the bright blue would probably be my choice if I was buying one.

While much of the bike will be familiar to anyone who has ever seen or contemplated a cargo bike, Trek really gets the geometry and style of this bike correct as far as making it very usable for many tasks. Even the dual-sided kickstand pops up and down with remarkable ease (shockingly rare on other large ebikes I've used). I particularly enjoyed using the rear panniers for hauling flats of berries and other easily squished items that tend to rattle around in softer panniers.

The panniers fit a ton of stuff; I was able to get four full-size grocery bags spread between the two black plastic totes. I like that they had little plugs in the bottom that you could feasibly use a plastic bag to cover and then fill them with ice and drinks.

I spent a couple months using the Fetch+ 2 as my primary bike, and came away much more impressed than anticipated, given the specs and the price.

On paper, this is an expensive ebike to have pretty standard mid-drive cargo bike specs. The 85 Nm Bosch motor and 500-wH battery are good for 20-plus miles a day loaded down in any city, but they’re not better than models like the larger Xtracycle Stoker, which has the same torque and a 630-wH battery for $4,999. The Trek also doesn’t have a carbon belt drive and variable transmission, which we consider the best (and easiest to maintain) shifting mechanism for cargo bikes.

Overhead view of bike handlebars

The more traditional chain-and-gears drivetrain and no suspension make this a less comfortable and more difficult-to-maintain bike than favorites like the Tern GSD ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ), which costs about the same. I have to say, I was expecting the difference in riding experience to be more severe. The fatter-than-usual 20 x 2.35-inch tires of the Trek absorbed potholes better than other suspensionless bikes. It also stopped just as well as its competitors, thanks to hydraulic disc brakes.

Mid-drive cargo bikes are much better than their rear-hub counterparts, especially when toting larger items or smaller humans, because they allow you to get more torque to the wheels, and provide a more traditional riding experience. I never found myself lacking for power, though I did crunch through the gears a bit when starting on a hill.

The Fetch+ 2 rides really well, with a solid frame and no creaks or sketchiness of any kind (as picked up from my local Trek dealer, another plus of ordering from the brand), and I really liked how bright the built-in lights were when riding home from soccer games and band practices at night. The fat wheels were easy to turn, giving this a turning radius similar to a non-extended ebike when I was making U-turns in the city. It also has a built-in phone mount with a wireless charger, which makes it really nice for using a map app to cruise to unfamiliar places.

Side view of grey and black bike with small rack over the rear tire

It’s not a fun bike to ride in the traditional sense; it’s not the fastest or the most comfortable, but it is satisfyingly robust and confidence-inducing. In my months of riding, I never had a single issue with the bike. That’s unusual given the state of some of the roads I often took the Fetch+ 2 on the side of, and a testament to Trek's great build quality.

If I was a longtime Trek owner and interested in getting into cargo ebikes, I’d certainly give this line a look, with the understanding that I might find something I like better from Tern, Xtracycle, or another brand for the same price—or something from Rad Power Bikes or another more affordable direct-to-consumer manufacturer for less. It’s a well-made bike that does what it claims to do, but it’s on the spendy side.

It is a bit hard to come by, at least in bike shops around my hometown of Portland, Oregon. If you’re interested in this one for your treks around town, I’d make sure to call ahead for a test ride. If you want a familiar-feeling bike with all the frills of electrification, it’s worth a spin.
