Destination must-sees.
Known as the “Iceberg Capital,” the town of Ilulissat translates to the Greenlandic word for “iceberg.” Nearby is the Ilulissat Icefjord, containing icebergs produced by the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier. This single Icefjord produces the most icebergs outside of Antarctica, but only a total of 10% of Greenland’s icebergs are created here. This Icefjord was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.
Disko Bay is located on the west coast of Greenland and is within the Arctic Circle. Surrounded by a breathtaking natural landscape, take in towering basalt mountains and patches of greenery on the sloping hills. Admire the frosty glaciers scattered throughout the water and dock in Qeqertarsuaq, known as “The Big Island.” Disko Bay is also home to the famous Eqip Sermia Glacier.
Kangerlussuaq
Glide along the icy waters of the Kangerlussuaq Fjord and take in the snowcapped mountains jutting up out of the tundra. Admire the breathtaking blend of natural beauty through a mix of grassy flatlands and glacial peaks. Over 100 miles long, this massive waterway is one of the main crossroads of Greenland. In Greenlandic, the fjord’s name actually translates to “big fjord.”
Home to around 100 people, Itilleq is a remote settlement that pays tribute to its Inuit ancestors. Residents make their living hunting, fishing, and trapping. Take in the picturesque village on foot to get a firsthand feel of what life would be like with only the basic necessities. The town strives to preserve their unique heritage and cultural traditions.
Destination Must-Dos
Witness the calving of Eqip Sermia Glacier
Stretching over three miles wide, the Eqip Sermia Glacier is one of the most active glaciers in Greenland. Watch as blankets of melting ice slide off the glacier and thunder into the frigid water below. Listen to the booming crash when the air pressure is released, echoing monstrously into the still air. Get close to the glacier to safely take in the shades of white and blue.
Enjoy a kaffemik
Feel like a local when you participate in a kaffemik, a traditional celebratory gathering that features coffee, dessert, dancing, and music. In Greenlandic, the name kaffemik translates to "via coffee." Get an inside look at the local community and allow the welcoming lifestyle to embrace you. Warm up with a comforting cup of coffee and join in on the cozy celebration.
Tour Sisimiut
In the town of Sisimiut, wooden homes dot the hillsides, a rainbow of vibrant colors that contrast with the surrounding white snow. This area has been inhabited for over 4,500 years and features a quaint blend of historical and modern life. Sisimiut is home to around 5,400 citizens, making it the second-largest city in Greenland. Tour the historic Colonial Quarter, Sisimiut Museum, and the iconic Blue Church.
From valleys to hills, Greenland offers some of the best hiking trails in the Arctic Circle. Admire icy waterways and picturesque mountains as you venture along the road less traveled. Strap on your best pair of hiking boots and start climbing – the views will undoubtedly be worth it.

What people love about fully guided tours in greenland.
This is an amazing tour, exploring the world largest island. I am the oldest in the group of young dudes from different parts of the globe. Being an old bloke in the group it’s not easy. Traversing and maneuvering the parched land of Greenland and trekking the icecap…whoa! that’s incredible to feat. Our tour expert Eva is amazing, she walks and talks with full of energy. She knows the area well enough that she could explain with gusto. If you’re looking for comfort tour, this is not for you. Transportation…majority by foot and speed boat. The group of ten bonded together. We’d amazing swaddled moments together. Sleeping in a tent in the middle of nowhere, very very cold, making pee in the middle of the night walking few hundred feet groping in the dark if no flashlight…that was fun, good luck if you trip. Eating our lunch anyplace, anywhere but place good enough to rest and eat. The only issue I’d was buying a few minutes of WiFi to use that didn’t work, waste of money. I want to write more but it’ll be a book….Anyway, thanks to the Tasermiut Tour team but Eva takes the lion’s share.

First time visiting Greenland? You're going to need a boat-load of tips to get your started © Aningaaq R Carlsen / Visit Greenland
Greenland , the world’s largest island, is a country of wild extremes: uninhabitable wilderness at its core, and delightfully warm and charming people living in harmony with it. Climbers come to scale its spectacular sheer rock faces, scientists come to see what the melting ice can tell us of the planet’s future and many visitors come away with a whole new perspective on life.
There’s no question that the must-see attraction for everyone who visits Greenland is ‘big nature,’ from the black peaks that undulate on the horizon, to the great gray-blue ice sheet in the center of the island and the icebergs scattered in the sea around it. Muskox , arctic fox and polar bears roam around, and the northern lights dance in the sky above.
Inhabited since 2,500 BCE, with Viking colonies in the south from the 10th century, Greenland has developed a unique culture and set of beliefs based on its people’s strong relationship with the mountains, ice and sea that surrounds them. It’s impossible not to come away feeling awestruck by what nature can create.
When should I go to Greenland?
Greenland is a huge island with vast seasonal and geographical variations, and its weather can be unstable and unpredictable all year round. Be sure to take out travel insurance in the event of flight cancellations, and keep plans as loose as possible as schedules can change suddenly.
For snow, dog sledding and the northern lights, the best time to visit is from late September to May.
If you are keen to do adventure sports like hiking, climbing or kayaking, the Greenlandic summer is more suitable. This period, from May to September, promises more hours of daylight.
Where should I go in Greenland ?
Getting around Greenland is complicated (see below). The best advice is to choose one region to explore, or two at most, and spend a week there. This allows you to see the key natural sights and animals without feeling rushed, meet local people (who can be reticent), and have the flexibility to adapt if plans change due to bad weather.
As an example, you could choose to stay in the Ilulissat ice fjord region, where there are options for hiking, whale watching, exploring Disko Bay and perhaps the ice cap over the course of a week. If you want to follow the Arctic Circle Trail , again, that’s a one-to-two-week trip. Factor in that you’ll likely need to fly via Denmark or Iceland, potentially adding a night to the trip in either direction. And as mentioned, there may be unexpected events due to the weather.
Is it easy to get in and around Greenland?
In early 2025, an extension to Nuuk airport will allow larger planes to land in Greenland, making it easier to reach from international destinations. Until the new runways open, flights to Greenland go via Reykjavik and Copenhagen into the country’s international airports, Nuuk, Kangerslussuaq and Ilulissat. Kulusuk and Narsarsuaq are also entry points from Reykjavik.
Greenland is large and largely without roads. To travel between towns, Air Greenland flies to those with runways and runs helicopters to others. From April to December, the Arctic Umiaq Line runs coastal ferries from Qaqortoq in the south to Ilulissat in the north, with stops along the way. The full journey takes 4.5 days. Other ferries and coastal boats run up the west coast and across South Greenland in summer.
Within towns there are buses, taxis and cars, and you can also walk. It is advisable to book far in advance to secure a place (and for the best rates), and to have clear transport plans when you arrive in Greenland.
Top things to do in Greenland
Be awed by nature and humbled by culture. For the nature part, take a boat from Ilulissat, Nuuk or Qaqortoq and spend a day cruising the ice fjords, marveling at immense blue, white and gray icebergs and encountering all kinds of sea life from humpback whales to dolphins. Hike in the mountains surrounding the small town of Narsarsuaq and admire the ice sheet – you can even camp overnight on it at Camp Ice Cap near Kangerlussuaq.
Then immerse yourself in local culture and discover how people in Greenland really live. Experience the warmth of community and the power of history in a kaffemik, a local coffee morning, in Nuuk or Qaqortoq, or book into a wilderness camp and try Greenlandic glamping, with a side of fishing and foraging, for a true back-to-nature immersion in the country’s outdoors-driven lifestyle.
My favorite thing to do in Greenland
Nature watching in Greenland is off-the-chart amazing. You could spend all day cruising between icebergs and comparing their shapes and colors – and then there’s the wildlife. To see a sliver of a whale's back slip out of the water while you’re on a boat on the way to another town is sensational. The day I saw a polar bear climb a remote coastal cliff and disappear over a ridge remains one of the most memorable days of my life. These sights are framed by seas studded with icebergs, clear blue skies, uninhabited land and dark, jagged mountains, creating the most powerful punch of natural drama I’ve ever seen.
How much money do I need?
Greenland is not a cheap destination, but you can do it on a budget. Flight deals can be found outside the main summer season – a tip is to sign up to Air Greenland’s newsletter. As a general guide, a bed in a youth hostel in Nuuk will cost from around £100 per night, while a hotel will be around £200 per night. Luxury wilderness experiences typically cost at least £250 per night.
In terms of domestic transport, it is typically cheaper to take a boat rather than fly or take a helicopter. Booking in advance can also save money, but what you save in money you lose in time.
Greenland’s food is expensive – expect to spend around £25 for an evening meal in a restaurant – because so much of it has to be flown in. Save money by eating as locally as much as possible and cutting back on greens. A locally brewed beer might cost around £8 for a pint, while a coffee costs around £6. Bring a reusable water bottle as all Greenlandic water is drinkable.
Bring lots of layers, no matter the season
As mentioned, Greenland’s weather is highly changeable all year round, so pack with that in mind. Bring woolen layers, hiking boots, gloves, sunscreen, sunglasses and a snood at the very least. Hiking in jeans and city-style trainers is not recommended.
The northern lights can be seen throughout the year
Typically, northern lights season in Greenland runs from September until April, but check with the region you plan to visit to be sure. It’s possible to see the lights all year round, depending on where in Greenland you are, but you need a dark, cloudless night. The midnight sun takes over from June to July in the Arctic Circle region and April to August in more northerly locations, and then you will experience barely any darkness.
Greenlandic is the official language
Greenlanders speak Greenlandic; Danish is also used and many people, particularly in major hubs, speak English.
Staying safe in Greenland
Weather is one of the key risks in the country, so stay aware of the forecast, carry a GPS with you and know how to use a map. Tell someone where you are going before you set off. Wildlife risks can include polar bears and rabid arctic foxes. Calving icebergs can cause tsunamis and be fatal for those on boats. Travel insurance that covers all the activities you might do in Greenland is a must.
Etiquette notes
Note that the word Eskimo is considered an inappropriate term; Inuit is preferred.

Are you planning a trip to Greenland? Then make sure you read all my Greenland travel advice before you go – this post is packed full of useful tips & info!
Let me say this now, planning a trip to Greenland can be difficult. Obviously not many people travel there, getting around is hard and it can be very expensive. However, it’s a real once-in-a-lifetime type of place to visit. Hopefully once you’ve read all my Greenland travel advice you’ll be better prepared planning your trip!
The thing is all the planning and effort is 100% worth it. Greenland really is one of the most magical places I’ve ever been, so much so it’s now my favourite country in the world. Honestly, I can’t tell you enough how amazing Greenland is. If you’re sitting on the fence about going or not, go – I promise you won’t regret it.
I was full-on planning my trip to Greenland for at least a year before I finally visited. In a country that only gets around 75,000 tourists a year (most of those cruiseship passengers), there’s not a huge amount of Greenland travel advice online. Even though I read loads of blogs on Greenland, I still wasn’t prepared.
After travelling around Greenland for a couple of weeks and really immersing myself in the country, there are a few things I learned about the country that I wish I knew before I visited. Also, you’ll find loads of other information on things to do in my Greenland travel blogs – there are loads of them.
So, if you’re planning a trip to Greenland, these are all of my travel tips to help you on your way. Hopefully these will help you fall in love with the country as much as I did!
Planning a trip to Greenland ? Then bookmark my guides on the best places to visit in Greenland , on what the food is like and my top tips for Greenland too. I’ve also written individual destination guides to Nuuk , Igaliku , Narsaq , Qaqortoq and Uunartoq .
Why is Greenland so expensive?
One of the questions I get asked all the time is “why is Greenland so expensive” or “is Greenland worth it?” Yes it is expensive and yes it is worth it!
When I say Greenland is expensive, I really mean it. Expect Scandinavian prices and then some. The reason why is because Greenland is a desolate place – it is so barren trees can’t even grow there – that means they have to import virtually everything to the island which is why it’s so expensive. Make sure you research how much things cost beforehand and come up with a daily budget.
For me, I set myself a budget of about £100 (US$120) per day. I know that sounds like a lot but even having a simple sandwich at lunchtime will set you back £10. Add on transport, tours, accommodation and dinner and it can quickly wrack up. To save some money, I resorted to buying and making my own packed-lunches so I didn’t have to eat out every day.
What to wear in Greenland?
If you’re travelling to Greenland during the summer then make sure you pack lots of layers. When the sun is out, it can actually get quite hot in Greenland. Think t-shirt weather. However, as soon as that sun dips behind a cloud it can get pretty cold again. Bring layers so you can easily put on and take off clothes. When it gets to the evenings, that’s when things can get very cold. I was often wearing 2 pairs of trousers, even in summer. As I said, make sure you pack lots of clothes and options.
If you’re planning a trip to Greenland during the winter, bring even more layers. It can get as cold as -40 during the winter so it’s important you have the appropriate clothes. Thermals are a must, as are waterproofs. My advice here is if there’s skin, cover it.
Make sure you have warm clothes for the evenings
When I was in Greenland it went through a heatwave with a record high of 26 degrees. However, that didn’t mean it was warm in the evenings too. At one point it was so cold I had to wear two pairs of trousers, so make sure you bring thermals so can wrap up warm at night. I found long-Johns invaluable in the evening.
In winter, never get out of your thermals! Some solid Greenland travel advice for you right there.
Also, make sure you bring sunglasses
Another good travel tip for Greenland is make sure you bring sunglasses. It doesn’t matter if you’re travelling to Greenland during summer or winter, make sure you’ve got a pair. The sun can be fiercely bright off the snow and cause snow blindness, a condition that can actually lead to blindness. Polarising ski-goggles are great during the winter and UV sunglasses are great during the summer. I always made sure I had my sunnies on me and they barely left my eyes when I was outside.
Mosquitoes in Greenland – bring insect repellent
This isn’t a lie, but I have never seen so many mosquitos as in Greenland. During the winter all the mosquito eggs are frozen, but once it warms up and the ground thaws they come out in style. Bring the strongest insect repellent you can (I always use this insect repellent with 50% deet) and if you’re doing lots of hiking I would suggest bringing a mosquito facenet too.
Don’t drink alcohol in the streets
Surprisingly, alcoholism is a serious problem in Greenland. As such, alcoholic drinks can only be sold in shops from noon to 6pm during weekdays and from 11am to 1pm on Saturday. If you want to buy drinks then these are the times you can do it – just don’t drink on the streets as it might be seen as encouraging to the locals.
Because there’s such a high level of alcoholism in Greenland, the suicide rate is ridiculously high too. Please bear this in mind when talking to the locals and don’t make any stupid comments. It’s always important to follow the local customs wherever you can.
Getting around Greenland – take water taxis everywhere
Greenland only has 80kms of paved roads which makes getting around the country interesting. If you’re short on time then there are a number of internal flights in Greenland and helicopters are a common mode of transport too. However, during summer most people get around by boat.
If you’re heading south from Nuuk you can catch the Arctic Umiaq Line to Qqartoq, and once you’re south it’s a lot easier getting water taxis from place to place. During winter, every gets around by dog sledding and skidoos.
Speak to the local people
One of the things I loved about Greenland was speaking to the locals and hearing their stories. Greenlandics are exceedingly proud people and have strong cultural values, so it’s really important to talk to them about these. Also, I think it’s fascinating hearing all about what it’s like living in one of the toughest climates in the world.
If you’re lucky, you might be invited along to kaffemik. This is an open house celebration where every shares stories and has a bit of a party. I went along to a kaffemik in Nuuk and I was so surprised at how quickly I was accepted there – it was just like a celebration with old friends!
Make sure you leave your cultural misconceptions at home
In Greenland everyone eats musk ox, seal and whale. Is it shocking that they eat these animals? Not at all, because if they didn’t they wouldn’t survive. A lot of travellers find it quite difficult when they find that out, but this is the way Greenlandics have lived their whole life. Don’t force your cultural misconceptions onto other people. If you’re vegetarian or vegan, respect that hunting is a huge part of culture and life here. You can learn more about the food in Greenland here .
How to travel to Greenland?
Are you wondering how to get to Greenland? It’s a good question! Despite the fact Greenland is closer to Canada than anywhere else in the world, as it stands you can only fly from Copenhagen in Denmark and Rekjavik in Iceland. That means if you’re flying from north America it is most likely you’ll fly over Greenland only to double back on yourself. Flights to Greenland are fairly infrequent so make sure you check all times beforehand to find dates that work for you.
As I said, this is what it is like at the moment. That’s not to say new flight paths won’t open up in the future (there did use to be a flight from Eastern Canada). Fingers crossed they open that one up again soon.
Always try and bag the window seat
My advice for Greenland – always try and sit by the window when flying here!
When it comes to flying, usually I like sitting by the isle (I explain why here !). However, one of the best flights of my life was flying to Greenland . I managed to score a window seat and it was by far one of the most beautiful flights I’ve ever been on. If you want these views, make sure you bag the window seat even if you have to pay for it! Within the country, Air Greenland are the main flight operator.
What is the religion in Greenland?
If you were wondering, the main religion in Greenland is Christianity. Church services are very common on a Sunday around the country. If you’re religious, these are a great way of getting to know the community and seeing how important religion is to Greenlandic culture!
Where is Greenland?
If you’re look at a map, Greenland is almost as north as you can get. Most of the country is within the Arctic Circle which is why it’s such an inhospitable place to live.
However, being that far north means you’re almost guaranteed to see the Northern Lights ( aurora borealis ) if you’re travelling to Greenland during the winter. I’ve heard this is one of the best places around the world to watch the Northern Lights so bear than in mind when planing your trip here!
What is the population of Greenland?
The population of Greenland is small. Very very small. The last census put the population of Greenland at 56,000 people, a level that hasn’t changed since 1997. So yeah, considering the size, the population is tiny. In fact, Greenland is the least densely populated country in the world – another fact for the bucket list!

Thanks for sharing your tips. Very interesting. I am hoping to go in 2025 and want to see the Polar bears and icebergs in the north but also the other regions south and east. Would love to know how long you think we should allow for a trip to Greenland and if we can take water taxis from the North to the south. Thanks again. Excited to visit.
You will see icebergs wherever you go in Greenland, they are everywhere. I think 10 days is a great amount of time for travelling around the country, and yes, you can get water taxis or other boats to different places. I really hope you make it out there!
What currency did you use – Can you use Canadian, US, Euros? Thanks
The currency in Greenland is the Danish Krone (DKK), but they also accept USD at a lot of places so we used that too.
Thank you so much!
What a mesmerising trip you had. I always want to be on such places and I am definitely going to be on Greenland one day. Thanks for sharing.
No worries! I’m really glad you liked it and I hope you get to visit Greenland one day!

Greenland is a land of phenomenons with its midnight sun, glacial landscapes, and unique arctic wildlife. Plus, there’s the rare chance to see the skies dance with the northern lights – if you’re really lucky. But with the world’s largest island comprising 80% ice and very few roads, getting around Greenland is very difficult if not impossible on your own. That’s why pretty much everyone who visits Greenland does so via some sort of organized tour.

You might gawk at us when we say this is the best budget tour in Greenland, but as we said – the arctic ain’t cheap. There really is no such thing as a truly bare-bones budget trip for Greenland. This 2-week cruise gives you a glimpse into the unspoiled wilderness of Greenland, Svalbard, and Spitsbergen . Zodiacs and your own two feet will take you even deeper into this glacial paradise of fjords, bays, and inlets.
Spend days gazing out upon frigid ocean horizons looking out for orca, humpback, and minke whales. On land, you might sight arctic foxes and reindeer! You’ll also have the chance to a stop at the most remote town in Greenland – Ittoqqortoormiit – and learn how the 450 inhabitants live. While we’re on dry land, you have a chance to meet some huskies here as well.
This loop trip deposits you back in Longyearbyen, from where you can arrange your onwards travel. Alternatively, you could opt for the Arctic Highlights tour, also offered by GAdventures. This one finishes in Reykjavik, which may be more convenient for your onward travel plans.
Couples, families, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts. Phillip Pullman fans who dreamed of visiting Svalbard. Those hungry for knowledge – your expedition includes daily lectures and educational talks.
- Arranging your inward and outward travel to Longyearbyen (a territory belonging to Norway) might bump up the costs depending on where you fly from
- Due to the timings of luggage drop-off and embankment, you will also need to arrange your own accommodation the night prior to the tour
- Number of days: 17
- Price: $19,140 USD

Feeling flush and ready for an adventure that you (and your bank manager) will never forget? This epic expedition gets you hiking over permafrost, wildlife spotting, and cruising past fjords, glaciers and icebergs on a daily basis.
You’ll encounter abandoned research stations, places where explorers of old met their demise, and tiny Inuit communities. Pitched as immersive expedition travel, you’ll hear the crash of glacier shards falling into the icy ocean. If you’re up to the challenge, take a polar plunge yourself. All tours in Greenland are a match made in heaven for photographers. But considering the distance you cover in this one, you can get really creative as you document your journey.
Intrepid runs a very similar version to this trip, the Northwest Passage: In the Footsteps of Franklin . It’s the same number of days, same price, and same start/endpoints. However, the cruise hugs the Canadian mainland rather than Greenland.
Older travellers, couples, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts. Canadians and North Americans (the trip starts and ends in Toronto)
- Yup – expensive
- No meals are included and certain activities such as kayaking are not included in the price
Wanna know how to pack like a pro? Well for a start you need the right gear….
These are packing cubes for the globetrotters and compression sacks for the real adventurers – these babies are a traveller’s best kept secret. They organise yo’ packing and minimise volume too so you can pack MORE.
Or, y’know… you can stick to just chucking it all in your backpack…
- Number of days: 9
- Price: $10,460 USD
- Accommodation type: Cruise ship cabins (en suite)/ comfortable hotel
- How many meals included: 7 breakfasts, 6 lunches, 7 dinners
- Service Level: Marine comfort
Access the depths of Southern Greenland’s fjords by zodiac, kayak, and helicopter, and hike on the Ice Sheet itself. Adventurers will love the chance to hike in this isolated tundra. Deep within the fjord system, you’ll see dramatic landscapes ranging from snow-capped mountains to fields blooming with flowers. Yeah – we know, not exactly what you’d expect from holidays in Greenland of all places, despite the irony of the name.
This tour has a very fluid itinerary, so you can expect each day to bring something unexpected. Beginning and ending in Reykjavik, you can continue your quest in Iceland.
Modern-day adventurers, couples, travellers of all ages, bucket-listers, wildlife enthusiasts.
- Activities could be hindered if the weather doesn’t cooperate
- At full capacity, the boat may feel busy
- Number of days: 18
- Price: £15,040 USD
- Accommodation type: Comfortable, en suite cruise ship cabins
- How many meals included: 17 breakfasts, 15 lunches, 16 dinners
If you think Greenland is a radical destination for travel, wait until you get to Jan Mayen. This is a volcanic island drifting right in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, surrounded by ice. We know, the mind boggles.
Besides this, the trip chucks in all the usual (albeit amazing) suspects. Unforgettable zodiac rides, spectacular fjords and trips peering out trying to spot an elusive polar bear. But, there is no standard arctic circle trip – you just never know what the weather or mother nature will throw at you.
Need to transpose your start and endpoints? Then book the Spitsbergen, East Greenland and Iceland – Northbound tour instead. It’s a very similar route, although it misses Jan Mayen.
Couples, families, bucket-listers, photographers, wildlife lovers, those interested in geology
- Another option which is especially pricey
- Depending on your nationality, you may need visas for three different countries – Norway, Greenland and Iceland. Do check before you book.
Best Time to Visit Greenland
With long days and the promise of the midnight sun, summer (June to September) is the typical season to plan a vacation in Greenland. The temperatures are a tad warmer, and you are more likely to sight arctic wildlife. It’s not just travellers who enjoy frolicking in the 24-hour sun! However, the drawback is that there will be increased tourists and those 200-capacity cruisers might fill up easily.
Having said that, we still reckon it’s one of the top hiking spots in North America for the summertime .
While it’s not a guarantee, there is a chance of sighting the Northern Lights in Greenland. You are most likely to spot this phenomenon during dark, clear nights from September until the beginning of April. Choose a winter tour to Greenland if this is high on your agenda.
There’s no right or wrong – whatever time of year you choose to explore Greenland, you’re in for a visual treat.
Travel Insurance for your Greenland Tour
When booking organised trips to Greenland (or anywhere else, for that matter) you will probably need to take out travel insurance. If you rock up to orientation without proof, your CEO is going to send you straight back home.
Realistically, you’re not looking at any imminent danger. But, natural disasters can strike (remember the havoc reaped by Eyjafjallajökull in 2010) and you’ll want that cover just in case. Plus, flights can go bust, and while the chances of theft on your Greenland vacation are slim, breakages or damage to expensive camera gear are less so.
ALWAYS sort out your backpacker insurance before your trip. There’s plenty to choose from in that department, but a good place to start is Safety Wing .
They offer month-to-month payments, no lock-in contracts, and require absolutely no itineraries: that’s the exact kind of insurance long-term travellers and digital nomads need.
SafetyWing is cheap, easy, and admin-free: just sign up lickety-split so you can get back to it!
Click the button below to learn more about SafetyWing’s setup or read our insider review for the full tasty scoop.
What to Pack for Greenland
One thing you’ll need for any of these tours in Greenland is a strategic packing list. It’s going to be cold, wet, and wintery. In fact, it’ll be downright freezing – this is the Arctic after all. Plus, whichever tour you take, there are some mandatory bits of kit you’ll need. We’ve noted those below, along with a few other essentials.
Below – the VA team should try to link to as many TBB gear review articles as possible – just a reminder.
- Camera (bring additional memory cards and batteries)
- Binoculars (highly recommended)
- Drybag (essential for Zodiac landings)
- First-aid kit (as well as the obvious essentials, bring a remedy for seasickness. Just in case!)
- Polarised sunglasses
- Thermal layers – don’t forget your sexy thermal undies
- Lighter layers for downtime – all boats are heated sufficiently
- Fleece/thermal/ down jacket
- Waterproof trousers (mandatory for any Zodiac landings)
- Swimsuit (in summer, it is possible to take the polar plunge)
- Hat, scarf and gloves
- Footwear with excellent grip (open-toed shoes aren’t permitted in public spaces on the expedition ships)
- Sunscreen and SPF lip balm
- Kindle, podcasts, journal , and a pack of cards
- Outlet adapter (check your booking handbook for electricity voltage onboard)
Things go wrong on the road ALL THE TIME. Be prepared for what life throws at you.
Buy an AMK Travel Medical Kit before you head out on your next adventure – don’t be daft!
And that’s a wrap on the five best tours in Greenland. Now you can evaluate which itinerary speaks to you and go ahead and take the polar plunge to book your arctic voyage. While all the trips we’ve listed share a common theme of being marine expeditions, the sites do vary significantly. Remember that this expansive island varies depending on which coast you choose to explore. Plus, the further north you sail, the frostier the conditions.
Still can’t decide which Greenland vacation is for you? Our top pick is the Essential Greenland: Southern Coasts and Disko Bay tour. It’s not as costly as the other tours and gives you a well-rounded experience of Greenland’s culture, geology and wildlife.
Whichever trip you pick – Greenland is going to blow your mind. Can we come too?

Summer in Greenland
June – september, temperatures.
- Summer activities
Need to know
Places to stay.
Seasons in Greenland are different to the seasons you probably know from back home. We only really have two definitive seasons – a long winter and a short summer.
Greenland’s summer is short and changeable, and starts proper in June. There is a noticeable shift in the weather in April and May, but we do not really refer to it as Spring, as it’s not characterised by blooming flowers and trees leafing out – it’s more melting snow and higher temperatures. We usually say that summer finishes some time in early September, but sometimes the snow arrives earlier or later.
Why visit Greenland in the summer?
Summer in Greenland is a short burst of excitement. As the snow slides away, suddenly the landscape is revealed in a brand new light. The mountains go from white to grey and green, as waterfalls trickle down their sides to meet melting bodies of water. Sea ice breaks up and the fjords are decorated with magnificent floating icebergs. Flowers bloom and more wildlife comes out to play – birds fill the sky and the seas become alive with whales and fish. People move in new ways – we hike, run, cycle, sail, and kayak over the newly exposed terrain. And we have lots of time, as the days get long – they even never end in places!
Because Greenland is so vast, it is hard to generalise about its weather and temperatures. They vary greatly between – and even within – regions. These temperatures represent the range of average temperatures throughout the summer season in the different regions of Greenland. These temperatures are only advisory and are averages over a period of years. You may encounter considerably colder or warmer temperatures on site. One of the best sources to check the weather day by day once you’re in Greenland is the DMI website .
Despite the relatively low average temperatures, the dry air in Greenland means that summer temperatures will often feel warmer than you might expect. Be prepared for T-shirt temperatures on a sunny summer day. However, the only sure thing about Greenland’s weather is that it is always unpredictable. So even in the summer, bring clothes that are suitable for heavy rain and wind.

There's a good reason that Iceland is considered a photographer's dream destination. Its terrain is visually stunning, offering views of lava flows, hot springs, unspoiled nature - and colourful, fascinating cities like Reykjavik. The world's most northerly capital brings together quaint villages, exciting museums, a flourishing music scene and restaurants that rival Europe's finest. Explore more of Reykjavik on a European cruise!
Situated in West Iceland on the Snæfellsnes peninsula, Grundarfjörður is a small fishing village boasting big outdoor adventures. Hike in the surrounding mountains, explore lava fields and visit picturesque waterfalls. Or take to the water on a boating or kayaking tour. And in the summer months, enjoy Viking age re-enactments in a reconstructed Viking village.
Nestled along the shores of one of the most breathtaking fjords in Iceland, Akureyri is the nation's second largest urban area and a centre of Icelandic folk culture. Visit the museums, hike along the extraordinary vistas or explore the botanical gardens. Shop in one of the charming boutiques and then catch a glimpse of the most northerly 18-hole golf course in the world. After you've worked up an appetite, feast on some Nordic specialities like smoked lamb and fresh fish and then indulge in an Icelandic fried pastry.
As the largest town in Iceland's remote Westfjords's region, Ísafjörður is a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. Boasting an enchanting fjord ideal for watersports and a mountainous landscape brimming with opportunities for hiking, biking, horseback riding and more, there's something for everyone to enjoy. Originally a church site and a 16th century trading post, the town of Ísafjörður is home to wonderful museums and historic sites for those wishing to learn about the region's rich heritage and local culture.
Located on its namesake island in the Labrador Sea, Nanortalik is the country's southern-most town. The name Nanortalik means "Place of Polar Bears" because the pack ice brings the animals to the area in the spring and summer. High mountain peaks, deep fjords, pockets of woodlands, expansive glaciers and enticing hot springs all await your exploration. From kayaking excursions and whale watching tours, to hiking, fishing, climbing or simply soaking in a hot spring, there are many ways you can experience this unique region.
As the largest town in South Greenland, Qaqortoq offers something for everyone - history, culture, outdoor adventures and relaxing hot springs. The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times; you can tour the Qaqortoq Museum for a glimpse into its rich history. Stroll amongst its colourful buildings tucked into the hills to see 40 sculptures that are part of a permanent art exhibit and visit nearby Norse ruins. Greenland is a fascinating holiday destination, with countless areas of astonishing natural beauty, ranging from icy seas and coastlines, the famous fjords and rugged mountains where travellers can spot everything from whales, polar bears and walruses to sea eagles and arctic foxes.
The world’s biggest island is equally charming in the winter, when the Northern Lights dance across the sky, as in the summer, when the expanses of open space are ideal for hiking, boat trips, and panoramic views from the top of the peaks.
This guide, compiled by the Baltic Travel Company , highlights some of the excursions and experiences to prioritise when you travel to Greenland , including those for romantic couples’ holidays and activities that are perfect for children and families.
Must-See Sights for Greenland Summer Holidays
While many people assume that Greenland is a winter destination, it’s also a superb choice for a summer holiday a little less ordinary – particularly if you’re looking for a trip that is the opposite of overcrowded beaches and long queues to see the local landmarks.
Southern Greenland has the warmest, mildest summer weather. The lush green valleys are a world away and offer a great opportunity to switch off your phone and indulge in nature. With an abundance of Viking heritage, the landscape is untouched, with small communities and farms making this an amazing place for outdoor activities in the fresh air.
Some of the most popular adventure sports are widely available in the summer, between May and September, when the days are longer, and you’ll see plenty of warming sunshine.
Try kayaking, hiking, cycling, or even climbing the nearest rock faces, and you’ll see captivating views that don’t exist everywhere else. A boat trip from Nuuk, Ilulissat, or Qaqortoq is a brilliant way to traverse the fjords, keeping your eyes peeled for dolphins, humpback whales, and native sea birds.
We’d also recommend an overnight hiking trip for sporty travellers. There are some wonderful trails around the peaceful town of Narsarsuaq, where you can spend the night under the stars. If your idea of a relaxing break is a little less strenuous, you can also try a glamping experience at a wilderness camp, with all the amenities and touches of luxury thrown in.
Greenland Activities and Cultural Experiences for Couples
Few places in the world are as romantic as Greenland, where the vast spaces and scenery encourage visitors to take a step back and soak everything in. A tour around Qasigiannguit, a fjord to the south of Disko Bay, is an excellent excursion – the fjord is fondly referred to as the capital of whales. Spending your day exploring the fjord and looking out for pods of whales is an incredible experience and one you won’t forget!
We’d also recommend trying one of the hot springs, most of which are in southern Greenland. Uunartoq is a great choice since the natural springs remain invitingly warm throughout the summer—many others are a little too cool due to the polar climate for visitors to enjoy.
Glaciers are another natural phenomenon that every couple should experience. A road trip around the coastline is a fantastic way to learn more about Inuit culture and traditions and visit a number of small towns and harbour villages along the way.
Of course, no romantic break in Greenland would be complete without mentioning the Northern Lights, which are best seen during the winter months between September and April. This world-famous light display is particularly magical over the snowy landscapes, and you can head out to see the lights on a cruise, an overnight wilderness adventure, or from the comfort of a romantic lodge.
Tips on Greenland Holidays for Families With Children
Greenland is characterised by big nature and diverse, rare native species of wildlife, making it a great place for children with an unending sense of adventure and imagination. Qeqertarsuaq, located on Disko Island, is an extraordinary day out. You can take a boat from Ilulissat, which takes about two hours. An alternative is to book a private helicopter tour, especially in the winter or during rough seas.
This small town has a hotel with a restaurant that caters to visitors of all ages, but the island itself is something special; its name translates into the big island, which means a visit here takes you to the largest island within the world’s largest island.
Since the island is volcanic, it remains green most of the year. Various activities include camping, fishing, hiking, mountain biking tours for older children, and kayaking trips.
If your children are keen to see as much as possible, we’d also suggest an air safari with a local guide who can point out all the interesting and remarkable sights along the way – seeing the ice fjords and lakes by air is a memorable experience. Kids also love the opportunity to visit a local horse ranch, meet the rugged Greenlandic ponies, and go on a trek to explore on horseback.
Making the Most of a Christmas Holiday in Greenland
Over the festive season, Greenland turns into a true winter wonderland blanketed by crisp, pristine snow. You can watch for the Northern lights, enjoy dog sledding, and see polar bears, arctic foxes, and muskox—a type of wild oxen that live in Greenland. Dog sledding is a must-try activity, originally a method of transport used to pull hunters out onto the ice when fishing for halibut and other seafood.
Nuuk is a great place to visit at this time of year, when visitors are enchanted by the Christmas spirit, with icicles from every rooftop, traditional orange stars in the windows, and shopping in the markets for delicacies, gifts and crafts.
You’ll be able to join in with carol singing, sample local cookies and sweets, and celebrate New Year’s Eve—which happens twice in some parts of Greenland! In Ilulissat, local people mark the occasion at 10 pm for Denmark and again at midnight.
For any further information about any of the locations, activities, excursions or destinations we’ve mentioned, you are welcome to contact the Baltic Travel Company. You’ll also find full details of all our packages and tours on our web pages, including return flights and accommodation.

Greenland Tours & Vacations
About 4,500 years ago, early man migrated thousands of perilous miles from Canada into Greenland.
And when they got there and saw the ice-covered mountains, glaciers and resident polar bears, they stopped and said ‘Yep, this looks like the spot.’ And who can blame them? It may be cold, but the unfenced wilderness of the world’s biggest (and least populated) island is worth wearing a scarf 11 months of the year for. Although technically still part of Denmark , Greenland is now self-governing and has a proud Inuit culture. And with no crowds, little crime and only a few roads to break up the endless ice flow, it’s easy to see the appeal (just don’t forget that scarf).

Best time to visit greenland.
Generally the summer months of June, July and August are the time to see Greenland, but it does depend what you’re looking for. At midyear the country isn’t as chilly as it can be (temperatures can rise as high as a sweltering 15°C…) and you’ll get to experience the phenomenon of the midnight sun. Of course, if it’s the night lights of the aurora borealis you’re after, the time to go is definitely October through to March, when temperatures can plummet to well below freezing. Pack accordingly.
Geography and environment
When 84 per cent of your country is covered in the world’s largest ice sheet (and the rest is classed as permafrost), geography may seem kind of self-explanatory. But Greenland’s coastal fringes are where most of the magic happens. Plunging fjords, rocky promontories, trundling glaciers calving off into the Labrador Sea. Most of the settlements along the western coast are colourful wooden houses painted every colour of the rainbow. Towns and settlements are virtually cut-off from each other (roads are very rare in Greenland), so most trade and movement is done by sea and air.
Top 5 wildlife experiences in Greenland
1. humpback whale.
Humpback whales migrate to the cooler waters of the Arctic to feed each year. It’s a mammoth journey, often spanning thousands of kilometres (and all at travelling just a few kilometres per hour). That’s probably why humpbacks like to blow off a bit of steam in Greenland. Around Aasiaat, Qeqertarsuaq and Sisimiut between April and November it’s not an uncommon sight to see a 30-tonne humpback leaping clear out of the water.
In the Middle Ages, Inuits and Norse tribesmen would trade narwhal horns for fabulous sums (they were the marine equivalent of a unicorn). Thankfully the horn trade is over and these beautiful toothed whales can swim and eat in peace. They’re usually found in Melville Bay and around Qaanaaq, where their spiralling three-metre tusk can be seen poking through the surface of the water.
3. Polar bear
This is the world’s largest land predator, and the chances of seeing one increase when you’re on the water. Cruising along the coast of west or north-east Greenland is your best shot at spotting one of these creatures, but don’t hold your breath – they can be quite aloof. But the good news is that if they are out there, they are quite easy to see due to their off-white fur standing out against the snow-white ice.
4. Arctic fox
Technically there are two types of Arctic fox in Greenland – the classic white and the blue. Both species change colour depending on the season in order to blend in with the rocky landscape and the polar ice sheet. Arctic foxes live on an almost exclusive diet of lemmings – so when lemming populations drop, so do the number of foxes. Thankfully numbers are strong, and the Arctic fox isn’t a threatened species.
5. White-tailed eagle
Don’t forget to look up every now and then: Greenland has a huge and colourful variety of birdlife. The biggest and most striking bird is the white-tailed eagle (known as the nattoralik in Greenlandic). You’ll usually find them circling along the west coast down to Cape Farewell, hoping to find a cod, char or smaller sea bird to stoop. These birds are as rare as they are beautiful, and are officially a protected species in Greenland.

ATM access is good in the major towns and settlements, but most holes-in-the-wall will close at about 6pm. You can also withdraw money in banks and post offices.
Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?
Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Amazing Wildlife Experiences You NEED To Try
Posted: May 6, 2024 | Last updated: May 6, 2024
The really wild show
From walking with lions in Kenya’s Maasai Mara to searching for polar bears in the fjords of East Greenland and swimming with manatees in Florida, observing animals in their natural habitat can be one of the most exhilarating experiences around.
Click or scroll through the gallery to discover the world's most incredible wildlife trips for your bucket list...
Spot polar bears in Greenland
Head out on a pioneering small ship expedition with Natural World Safaris and you’ll cruise through rugged fjords and towering ethereal landscapes. Off the boat, hike through the rugged landscape and keep an eye out for all sorts of flora and fauna – wildflowers, birds, seals, whales and, of course, those striking polar bears.
Birdwatch for black-necked cranes in Bhutan
Go on a silent safari in South Africa
But the real luxury comes in the form of the near-silent electric 4x4s on offer at Cheetah Plains . Unlike the boisterously-loud Land Cruisers you normally find on safari, these eco-friendly vehicles are so quiet, even skittish animals like impalas and leopards remain undisturbed, meaning sightings are frequent and amazingly up-close.
Get up close to lemurs in Madagascar
Track snow leopards in the Himalayas
Hidden in the icy crags of the Himalayas you’ll find one of the most majestic predators on the planet: the snow leopard. The elusive creatures – which, according to local legend, are 'as beautiful as 10 women, as strong as 10 men and as wise as 10 astronomers' – slink between huge boulders preying on blue sheep from December to March.

Travel expedition specialists Pelorus work with guides who helped the BBC Natural History unit track and film these predators for smash-hit nature documentary Planet Earth . Now they’re opening up the adventure to intrepid guests – join local experts to see snow leopards in their natural habitat of Ulley Valley, in the region of Jammu and Kashmir.
See lions on foot in Kenya
You’ll gain a whole new respect for the land if you ditch the safari vehicle and cross Kenya’s Maasai Mara reserve on two feet, offered as part of a nerve-jangling itinerary from Asilia Adventures .
Observe beluga whales in Arctic Canada
Arctic Watch Wilderness Lodge is a permanent camp and perfect place from which to observe the whales, as well as the muskox, polar bears, seabirds and delicate Arctic wildflowers native to this remote spot.
Run with jaguars in Brazil
Caiman Ecological Refuge is home to one of the world's only jaguar habituation projects and guests here can tag along with their important jaguar-tracking expeditions. The refuge also runs programs focusing on the large local population of hyacinth macaws. A day with the refuge’s biologists allows you to assist the team in monitoring the birds, whose numbers are under threat due to the caged-bird trade and habitat loss.
Seek out spirit bears in Canada
Pause for breath in British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest and you may hear the screech of a bald eagle, the howl of the rare coastal wolf or the sound of branches cracking as a ghostly spirit bear makes its way through the forest. These all-white animals – actually a mutated sub-species of black bear – are so rare that Indigenous communities believe they have supernatural powers.
A stay at the Kitasoo Xai'xais First Nations-owned Spirit Bear Lodge puts you in with a chance of spotting these ghostly creatures. Head out by boat and on foot – accompanied by the lodge’s experienced nature guides – and you may just spot a flash of white fur through the thick forest, announcing the arrival of this incredible bear.
Watch red crab migration in Australia
As the humidity rises and the wet season arrives on Australia’s far-flung Christmas Island (usually in October or November), tens of millions of red crabs begin their colossal migration from coast to coast in order to breed and spawn.
Roads become awash with a scuttling sea of red as females head for the sea in order to release their eggs, precisely at the turn of the high tide during the last lunar quarter. The migration occurs across the whole island but the easiest places to watch the spectacle include Flying Fish Cove, Ethel Beach and Greta Beach. Some sections of road are closed off to protect the crabs but, if you’re extremely careful, you can actually walk among the creatures.
Track wolves in Spain
Deep within the mountains of Spain’s northern Palencia, where sweeping ridges and broad valleys meet heathland and mixed forest, Europe’s wolves roam. The ancient villages here are largely deserted, left for reclamation by brown bears, wild boars and packs of Iberian wolves, which were almost hunted to extinction in the 1970s.
Naturetrek has built up a detailed knowledge of wolf-watching in the area and offers wildlife enthusiasts a great chance of sighting wolves in Europe. Its tours – which take place largely on foot – include accommodation in beautiful local farmhouses and also give guests a chance to spot rare wildcats, curmudgeonly wild boar and mighty Cantabrian brown bears.
Swim with manatees in Florida, USA
Crystal River in northern Florida is the only place in North America where you can legally swim with the bizarre-looking manatees, which were once thought to be mermaids (Christopher Columbus recorded plenty of ‘mermaid’ sightings in his 15th-century ship’s logs).
Educational tours are run by the Plantation on Crystal River eco-resort and, with conservation in mind, the federal government allows only ‘passive observation’ of the animals while swimming or snorkeling. This means guests must stay a respectful distance away from the manatees while in the water (although they do sometimes approach guests), remain as quiet and unobtrusive as possible, and no touching is allowed.
Witness a bison herd in Utah
Antelope Island State Park in Utah is home to bighorn sheep, coyotes, pronghorn antelope and a 500-strong bison herd, which has been trimming the grass here since 1893. One of the best ways to get around is by mountain bike and you can speed about the park’s backcountry trails for spectacular views of lake and island scenery, before holing up for a night under the stars at one of the island’s rugged wild camping spots.
Join the annual bison round-up – which takes place in October each year – and you’ll witness the heart-thudding sight of these huge, snorting beasts thundering their way through the sage-scented landscape, pursued by real cowboys, cowgirls and wildlife biologists who wrangle the herd deftly from horseback. The creatures are rounded up for a thorough health check, apart from the particularly ornery bulls, which are left undisturbed on the plains.
Learn about tiger conservation in India
India’s tiger population has increased by 715 specimens since 2018, bringing the animals back from the brink of extinction. Conservation-focused trips with tour operators such as Steppes allow you to observe the predators, set camera traps and learn tracking skills.

The last flower at the top of the world—and the perilous journey to reach it
Scientists journeyed to a stretch of gravel off the coast of Greenland—the farthest north you can go and still walk on land. These photos show what they found there.
At the top of the Earth, the northernmost stretch of land a person can stand on is Inuit Qeqertaat, also named Kaffeklubben Island by early 20th century Danish explorers. The region is a dark gray stretch of gravel on the northern coast of Greenland where land slowly gives way to frozen sea ice.
To find what lives amid these rocky soils, climate change researchers and National Geographic Explorers Brian Buma and Jeff Kerby and their team embarked on a journey to survey the region. There, they found a common species of moss ( Tortula mucronifolia ), the world's northernmost plant, and a yellow and lime-green Arctic poppy ( Papaver radicatum ), growing just a few inches south of the moss.
On the nearby mainland, Greenlandic archaeologist Aka Simonsen discovered a ring of roughly 700-year-old Inuit stones, which may be the northernmost archaeological remains.
The research team left their own mark on the mainland coast, staking plots and recording the vegetation they contained to create a highly detailed digital map of the area they surveyed. Information collected from this trip will be the first data logs in what Buma and Kerby hope will be a long timeline of research in the far northern region.
Here, above the Arctic Circle, the planet is warming four times faster than anywhere else on Earth. Changes here will have ripple effects across the globe, which is why the team braved harsh conditions to find what lives on the edge.
