Few places in the world compare to colorful, vibrant Miami Beach. From the one-of-a-kind art deco architecture along Ocean Drive to the scantily clad beachgoers on South Beach, this Miami offshoot attracts everyone from relaxed retirees to night owls. But you'll want to bring along your credit card because those fashionable dance clubs and chic, trendy restaurants don't come cheap. To save some money, consider buying a Go Miami card before your trip to access to some of the area's museums and tours for a fraction of the price.

Florida is almost as famous for its alligators as it is for its beaches and theme parks, and one of the best places to see them is in Everglades National Park. As the largest subtropical wilderness in the country, the park is the world's only environment where alligators and crocodiles coexist. It's also home to rare species like manatees and panthers. The Everglades offers several hiking trails and guided tours for navigating its vast 1.5 million acres. Be sure to visit between November and April (the park's dry season) to enjoy lower temperatures, fewer mosquitos and increased chances of spotting wildlife.

Holding the Guinness World Record for most consecutive days of sunshine, St. Petersburg appeals to all types of travelers. Outdoor enthusiasts will enjoy St. Pete Beach and the 7 miles of waterfront parks. Away from the shore, downtown St. Petersburg offers plenty of attractions, including a museum dedicated to the works of Salvador Dalí and the Sunken Gardens, the city's oldest living museum. The city also hosts one of the largest Pride events in the U.S. every summer and is home to a large LGBTQ+ community.

If you're looking for sun, sand and superb shopping, Fort Lauderdale is the place to go. Fort Lauderdale features palm-tree-lined beaches, and its 165 miles of waterways and canals have earned it the nickname the Venice of America. Those looking to partake in some retail therapy will find plenty of shops and restaurants on Las Olas Boulevard and in Galleria Fort Lauderdale and Sawgrass Mills, the largest outlet mall in the country. When you're not exercising your wallet or lounging on beautiful Las Olas Beach, don't forget to check out the Bonnet House Museum & Gardens, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.

Much like its sunny neighbor, St. Petersburg, Tampa attracts visitors with its balmy weather and outdoor pursuits. But as the third largest city in Florida, Tampa also offers a little more action. Visitors can stroll along the lively Tampa Riverwalk to get a glimpse of public art and dazzling light displays, or visit one of the area's museums, such as the Tampa Bay History Center. Those bringing kids along can also explore Glazer Children's Museum or The Florida Aquarium (with a stop at Sparkman Wharf for lunch), or tire them out with some thrills at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay.

Cocoa Beach appeals to everyone from space enthusiasts to surfers. The nearby Kennedy Space Center offers a firsthand look at NASA's shuttles and launch pads. The 12 Best Places to Visit in Florida, According to a Lifelong Resident

The Sunshine State has it all, but these are Florida's best vacation destinations, according to a fourth-generation resident.

Year-round sunshine, miles of beaches, and almost as many palm trees as people — what's not to love? Florida is where the world goes on vacation.

While the state eats, sleeps, and breathes tourism, deciding exactly where to visit in Florida can be the hardest part. Any kind of traveler can enjoy a trip to Florida because the state has it all: fabulous resorts , theme parks for families, outdoor adventures for nature lovers, and historical significance for the curious.

As for the question of the best places to visit in Florida, there's really no wrong answer, but as a fourth-generation Floridian, here's my take.

The Palm Beaches

Think of the Palm Beaches as a fast pass to the best of Florida. An umbrella term for the cities of Palm Beach County, the region includes spots like West Palm Beach, Palm Beach, Wellington, Delray Beach, Jupiter, and Boca Raton.

The sheer diversity of activities available in the Palm Beaches is its strength. You can shop, surf, scuba dive, enjoy brunch with your pup , watch an international polo match, relax on 47 miles of shoreline, meet rehabilitating sea turtles , take a quick two-night cruise to the Bahamas , see a Broadway musical at the Kravis Center , and catch a foul ball at a spring training baseball game. Out west, you can book airboat tours of the Everglades or get up close and personal with rhinos, giraffes, and zebras at Lion Country Safari , a cageless, drive-thru zoo spread over 600 acres.

If you're after a ritzy resort stay, Palm Beach and Boca Raton have you covered. Nothing beats The Breakers — you'll be treated like royalty — but The Colony Hotel , Eau Palm Beach , and The Boca Raton are harbingers of a modern era in Palm Beach.

Across the bridge, West Palm Beach has a big-city feel without the headaches of traffic and congestion. Take the free trolley between Clematis Street, The Square , and the waterfront, or head out to Grandview Public Market in the up-and-coming Warehouse District.

Hilton West Palm Beach houses Galley, a restaurant with tasty cocktails, fresh seafood, and gourmet pizzas, and The Ben West Palm and Canopy by Hilton West Palm Beach Downtown both have rooftops with stellar views.

St. Augustine

As the oldest city in America , St. Augustine has had a lot of time to get it right. Settlers arrived in the mid-1500s and some still-standing spots, like the Fountain of Youth and Castillo de San Marcos, date back almost that far. It's a walkable town imbued with intrigue; whispers of the past swirl through every cobblestone alley.

In St. Augustine, learning about the area's history (preferably via ghost tour once darkness envelops the city) is a given. But there are also newer arrivals built to please the modern explorer, like Ice Plant for cocktails and the Alligator Farm for a perfectly Floridian animal encounter. Visit during St. Augustine's annual Nights of Lights event around Christmas to see the city sparkle in the glow of three million lights.

For the perfect marriage of history and a cozy breed of luxury, book a stay at the adults-only Collector Luxury Inn & Gardens , where you can tour the grounds with the property historian and gather for expertly crafted cocktails at The Well Bar. For a taste of old-world elegance, St. Francis Inn — built in 1791 — is a bed-and-breakfast that captures the spirit of the city and all there is to love about homey accommodations. It's located right on St. George Street, St. Augustine's main drag.

Once you've walked up an appetite, head to dinner at Michael's Tasting Room , The Floridian , or O.C. White's , a historic restaurant in the heart of the action. Or, for something a bit more casual, stop into A1A Ale Works for perhaps the best root beer of your life, served alongside a beautiful view of the Bridge of Lions.

Florida Keys

Stretching 113 miles from Key Largo to the southernmost point of the continental United States in funky Key West, the Florida Keys is a veritable paradise; pick any Key along the way and you're guaranteed a tropical getaway with no need for a passport. Fill your itinerary with activities like boating, diving, fishing, snorkeling coral reefs, feeding 10-foot tarpon at Robbie's , and generally enjoying one of the best destinations in the world for the let-your-hair-down brand of vacationing.

Key Largo boasts the adults-only Bungalows Key Largo , the first all-inclusive in the Keys, while Playa Largo is a solid choice for families or anyone who loves an action-packed trip; there are pools, water sports like sailing, parasailing, and kayaking, and even a hammock garden for reading.

For the best seafood (and Key lime pie) in the Keys, book a table at The Fish House , a family-owned Key Largo institution that's set apart by the fact that they're one of the only restaurants sourcing exclusively from local fishermen, so your fish is as fresh as it gets.

Orlando and Central Florida

Orlando is the destination of choice for many people planning a vacation to Florida, and for good reason: There's Walt Disney World and Magic Kingdom, Epcot , Universal Studios, Universal's Islands of Adventure, Animal Kingdom, Discovery Cove, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter , Gatorland, and more. While those spots will always be popular among visitors and locals alike, there's more to this Florida region.

For example, head due east from Orlando and you'll land at NASA's Kennedy Space Center , where you can explore a complex dedicated to all things space travel, and even watch rocket launches. To the north, quieter Winter Park is considered the Palm Beach of central Florida. There, you can enjoy lakeside sunsets and stroll under canopies of old oak trees. Eat breakfast at Briarpatch and dinner at Hillstone Restaurant .

There are also plenty of ways to get outdoorsy and adventurous in Florida once you've escaped the tourist traps of Orlando. Some distance from the Orlando area, but still in central Florida, you've got the Blue Grotto , a 100-foot clearwater cavern that's popular with divers, and also Rainbow Springs State Park , where you can lazily float down Rainbow River in an inner tube.

Crystal River

Slower-paced, lesser-known Crystal River is a sleepy, tucked-away destination on Florida's western coast. Crystal River has little by way of culinary and nightlife offerings, but it's home to the most striking natural beauty of Florida, especially for those who love being on the water.

A clear kayak tour with Get Up and Go Kayaking is the perfect way to explore the enchanting springs of Crystal River, and wintertime visitors have a good chance of paddling alongside any of the hundreds of manatees who migrate into the springs each year. As you tour Hunter Springs, Jurassic Springs, and Three Sisters Springs, you may also spot dolphins, turtles, birds, and other wildlife. Nearby Plantation on Crystal River offers simple, no-frill waterfront accommodations spread across 232 acres on Kings Bay.

For an even more delightfully Florida vacation activity, head to one of the legendary live mermaid shows at Weeki Wachee Springs State Park , about an hour's drive south of Crystal River.

Miami and Fort Lauderdale

It's a global city with everything you could hope for in terms of great eats, hotels, and party venues. In the uber-Instagrammable Art Deco District in South Beach, you'll find bubbling creativity and the sort of old-meets-new style that keeps Miami on the map, and at nearby Wynwood Walls , there's street art and sky-high murals galore.

If you're planning a trip, August is by far the best month to visit Miami, as long as you're into indulgent five-star experiences. During this month, the perfect trifecta of citywide deals converge: Miami Spa Months , Miami Spice Restaurant Months , and Miami Hotel Months . The promotions give visitors a chance to stay at places like Mandarin Oriental, Miami , book ultra-luxe spa treatments, and dine at the city's best restaurants for a fraction of the usual price.

Work your way down the Ale Trail for craft brews and bites, or board the Water Taxi for a different perspective on the city — it's like a trolley system on water, fitting for what some call the "Venice of America" due to Fort Lauderdale's plentiful waterways. Hop off the Water Taxi at Las Olas Boulevard for the city's best shopping and dining.

Tampa Bay Area (Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater)

The Florida Panhandle consists of Pensacola, Panama City Beach, Destin, and Tallahassee, the capital of Florida. A popular spring break spot, the Panhandle relies heavily on tourism.

The Panhandle's calm Gulf waters and white-sand beaches are a major draw, but beach day alternatives abound: Visitors can hike, bike, or canoe in St. Andrews State Park or start happy hour early at Panama City Beach institutions like the delightfully over-the-top Pineapple Willy's (don't leave without ordering a po' boy with your frozen drink). Amelia Island

Quiet little Amelia Island is popular with visitors who can appreciate a charming seaside destination with no crowds in sight. Plus, with rolling dunes and marshes instead of just flat, sandy beaches, the geography of the area packs added interest. There are beaches, of course, but nature lovers will also want to check out Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve and Fort Clinch State Park , home to the 19th-century Fort Clinch plus nature trails, camping grounds, and wildlife.

Another Amelia Island attraction is the oldest lighthouse in Florida, proudly standing 67 feet tall. Charming beachfront lodges and inns line Amelia Island, so visitors have their pick of endearing accommodations. Head to historic downtown Fernandina Beach on the island to shop or chow down at the Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival , an annual tradition dedicated to a shared love of shrimp.

There's also Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge , Cedar Key Museum State Park , and the Cedar Key Historical Society & Museum if you want to learn more about the area. End your relaxing days with a sunset at Cedar Key Airport Beach.

Naples is another gem on Florida's western coast — the area is called the Paradise Coast for a reason. Romantic and ritzy, Naples is known for beautiful white-sand beaches, sprawling golf courses, high-end restaurants, and upscale shopping — a "sister city" of sorts to Palm Beach, located directly across the state on Florida's eastern coast.

If retail therapy is on the agenda (and it should be in Naples), head to Fifth Avenue South and Third Street South to put a dent in your credit limit. Or, if natural attractions are more your speed, head to the Naples Botanical Garden , Clam Pass Park , or the Naples Zoo . Art lovers will also find a lot to enjoy at Artis — Naples , a multidisciplinary organization home to The Baker Museum and the Naples Philharmonic, or any of the impressive art galleries dotting the city.

Everglades National Park

A national park trip may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Florida, but the state is ripe with one-of-a-kind spots (expect alligators and palm trees instead of bison and geysers) and Everglades National Park is its crown jewel.

Encompassing 1.5 million acres of preserved wetlands on the southern tip of the Floridian peninsula, the Everglades is actually a slow-moving "river of grass," comprising unique habitats such as coastal mangroves, sawgrass marshes, pine flatwoods, and more. Florida Seasons At a Glance

Peak Beach Season in Florida: We realize many visitors will be coming to Florida with one thing in mind: getting to the beach! It’s nearly impossible to come to Florida without considering where you’ll be beaching on vacay, especially if you’re coming from a landlocked area. And because Florida is literally the warmest state in the country, there’s almost no bad time to go to the beach. However, March seems to be peak season for the beaches will everyone coming down here for Spring Break.

If we had to choose, we’d suggest going when there are fewer people and optimal temperatures. The best months for going to the beach in Florida are April, May and November. At this point in the year, there may be a moderate crowd, but you’ll be getting some of the best wind and water temperatures. In the Winter, the ocean breeze and waters can be quite cold for swimming and in the Summer months you have very high chances of hurricanes, tropical storms and daily rain showers that could ruin your plans.

Peak Theme Park Crowds in Florida: It’s shocking that theme park high seasons don’t necessarily follow the peak and slow seasons of Florida’s tourist crowds. We base our theme park volume on Walt Disney World, which is the vacation capital of the world and the place that most vacationers will be headed upon arrival in Orlando. However, Universal Studios, Busch Gardens, Sea World and Legoland are all in close proximity and will fluctuate similarly.

Despite rainy weather being at it’s worst, most crowds will be at the theme parks in June, July and August. Not only will you be competing with other tourists at this time, but locals are also coming to have fun in droves. Amusement parks will also see an uptick in March for Spring Break and December for Christmas. This leaves the great weather months ripe for the picking with lower ticket and accommodation prices. To take advantage of this, plan to visit Florida’s theme parks during the months of January, February, September or October (can still be hot).

Slow Season in Florida: Florida is a “snowbird” haven, harboring Winter visitors and retirees who either come for extended vacations or who will be here for a full six months before heading back North for the hot months. They often arrive in October and go North in or before May. When they’re here, the state will be noticeably fuller, especially around the holidays and in the Spring when more tourists are here.

The slow season is inevitably the time when few people, even Florida residents, want to be here: Hurricane Season. Hurricane season lasts June through November, but the worst weather tends to be in July, August and September. Not only are these months riddled with daily thunder storms (and the somewhat rare potential hurricane or tornado), but the air is at it’s hottest and muggiest. Most people try to avoid this when vacationing in Florida.

This breakdown for each month will help you determine which time of year is the best fit for your preferred activities. Even though Florida weather is pleasant year-round, each month has small changes from the other. We’ve covered these in detail from month to month.

January weather in Florida is usually the coldest month of the year. In the Northern part of the state (Central Florida to the Panhandle) average daily highs will be around 65°F (18.3°C) and lows will be about 36°F (2.2°C). In the Southern part (Central Florida to the Keys) average highs will be closer to 72°F (22.2°C). You’ll almost never see snow, even in the Northern part of the state and rain is fairly scarce this month. When packing, it’s best to bring a variety of layers as the mornings will start cold and get warm throughout the day.

January crowds in Florida tend to be some of the slowest of the year. The places where you’ll experience the biggest influx of visitors will be in towns that are popular with snowbirds. Most travelers will be pleasantly surprised with the cheaper accommodations in Florida this time of year.

February in Florida can vary each year, but it’s usually cooler. The Northern half of the state will average highs around 68°F (20°C) and lows at 45°F (7.2°C), while the Southern half will average highs closer to 74°F (23.3°C). Very often the cold air collides with humidity at this time, creating fog on the roadways for a few hours every morning until about 10am.

February crowds in Florida will vary depending on which region you visit this month. However, February tends to be a little slower month for vacationing. Most parts of Florida will experience a lull, even on the beaches, as most families will not be traveling this month in general, but snowbirds will keep the state busier this month.

March weather in Florida can be cool, with warmer days sprinkled throughout averaging lows of 50°F (10°C) to highs of 75°F (23.9°C). Spring in Florida tends to have drastic changes in temperature each day, so expect to pack light layers you can put on and strip off when necessary. March is also a windy month for Florida with fogginess of the morning hours.

March crowds in Florida see a bit of uptick with most residents around the country vacationing for Spring Break. Florida is a popular Spring Break destination for it’s abundance of beaches and warm weather so most of the beach towns and big cities will be pretty busy.

April weather in Florida is starting to feel warmer, with less fog and less wind and more sunshine and breezy afternoons. April is also considered the last month of the dry season; rains will start to pick up in late May through the summer. Most of Florida will average 55°F (12.8°C) to 85°F (29.4°C) in the month of April. Humidity levels are always fairly high, with April seeing approximately 70% humidity.

April crowds in Florida die down just a little after the surge of Spring Break visitors in March. April is an excellent time to take advantage of lower hotel rates, while experiencing the oceans, beaches and inland areas before the heat becomes unbearable in the summer months. Snowbirds are still in town this month, so their most popular cities will still be fairly busy.

May weather in Florida is definitely warmer than the start of the year with temperatures rising throughout the month. May tends to have the nicest weather out of the Spring months, with significantly less fog and more sunshine throughout the day. May is the start of the wet season in Florida, so expect random rainfall during your trip. Most of Florida will average 65°F (18.3°C) to 85°F (30°C).

May crowds in Florida are moderate. It’s usually the point in time when the snowbirds will begin to head back North with the increasing rise in temperature this month. It’s an excellent time to take advantage of lower hotel rates, while experiencing the oceans, beaches and inland areas of the state before the heat rises. The beaches should be fairly busy, but not full like they were in Spring Break.

June weather in Florida will feel noticeably hotter and more humid than the other Spring months. June is in the wet season, so expect random showers and thunderstorms to occur at any point during your trip this month. Typically, rainfall in the Summer months in Florida will happen in the afternoons for about an hour or so and then taper off in the evening. But some days will have thunderstorms lasting all day through the night.

Even though the weather can be overcast and rainy, the sun still shine brightly and often in the month of June. The sun will be out most of the day this month, so come prepared with plenty of protection and sunblock because sunburn and heat rashes can happen quickly with limited sun exposure in Florida. It’s extremely important to stay hydrated, too. Most of the state will average 70°F (21.1°C) to 90°F (32.2°C) with high humidity.

June crowds in Florida are busy. Many tourists like to travel to Florida at the beginning of the summer when the weather isn’t unbearable and the kids are out of school. There are plenty of beautiful white, sandy beaches around the state, so most visitors will spread out, but the popular public beaches like Miami, Cocoa and Clearwater will remain highly populated.

August crowds in Florida are fairly low. Even though August is ghastly hot and rainy and most families are heading back to school, the theme parks can still have decent crowds this month. November temperatures may not be cold, but they’ll usually be comfortable with less humidity, making it easier to be outdoors for longer periods of time. December weather in Florida will be cooler, but usually never truly cold. The humidity is typically waning at this point, with very low chance of showers and almost never a chance of snow. The wind will pick up on occasion, but for the most part expect cool and dry days and nights.

It’s best to pack a variety of layers as the mornings will start cold around 43°F (6.1°C) and get warm throughout the day around 63°F (17.7°C), then turn back to cold in the evenings. Except for South Florida, which remains an even 76°F (24.4°C) on average.

December crowds in Florida will vary depending on which region you visit this month. However, December tends to be a bit busier across the board since the holidays are underway. Most parts of Florida will experience the hype of the season, especially in medium to large cities. It should also come as no surprise that Florida travel rates will be a little pricier this time of year, though you can still find cheaper options available.

Final Recommendation

There are many great things to do in Florida at every season throughout the year. It’s one of the best states to visit year-round for it’s warm climate and it’s vast number of things to occupy your time all over the state, so it’s very difficult to objectively rank one season ahead of the others.

If you plan to only go to the beach or even explore the National and State Parks, you may want to consider coming in the Spring or Fall for great weather and water temperatures. If you want to visit Walt Disney World, you’d best come early Fall or late Winter for the best prices. If saving money is your goal, you can’t beat the great rates in the cold month of January or the hot month of September for a Florida vacation.

Our personal favorite things to do in our home state of Florida are going to the beach and heading to the theme parks. With that in mind, we suggest coming for a beach trip in May when the weather is warm and less rainy with fewer people crowding the beach at this time. For a week-long trip to Walt Disney World, we suggest coming in late September for lower crowds and better experiences in the parks.

Ultimately, you as the visitor determine what the best time of year is for going to Florida. The Sunshine State has so many different opportunities available all throughout the year, giving you a huge range of choices for your own vacation.

Whether you’re coming to experience the hot, lively beaches of Miami, hitting up the amusement parks in Central Florida, taking an historical trip through St. Augustine or exploring the Everglades, each trip has something special to offer.

Object that crashed into Florida home came from space station, NASA confirms

A piece of metal that tore through a Florida home last month was space junk from the International Space Station, according to NASA.

The agency confirmed Monday that the 1.6-pound object was debris from a cargo pallet that had been intentionally released from the space station three years ago.

The pallet, packed with aging batteries, was supposed to burn up harmlessly in Earth’s atmosphere, but a piece survived — the piece that smashed into a house in Naples, Florida, on March 8.

WINK News , a CBS News affiliate in southwestern Florida, first reported the incident. Naples resident Alejandro Otero told the outlet that the object crashed through the roof and two floors of his home. Otero was not home at the time, he told WINK News, but the metal object nearly hit his son, who was two rooms away.

Otero did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In a blog post about the incident, NASA said it had analyzed the object at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and confirmed that it was part of the equipment used to mount the batteries on the cargo pallet.

The piece of space junk is roughly cylindrical in shape and is about 4-inches tall and 1.6-inches wide. NASA said agency staff studied the object’s features and metal composition and matched it to the hardware that had been jettisoned from the space station in 2021.

At that time, new lithium-ion batteries had recently been installed at the space station, so the old nickel hydrogen batteries were packed up for disposal. The space station’s robotic arm released the 5,800-pound cargo pallet containing the batteries over the Pacific Ocean, as the outpost orbited 260 miles above the Earth’s surface, according to NASA .

It’s not uncommon for space agencies and commercial space companies to discard defunct hardware in this manner, since it avoids contributing to Earth’s space junk problem. Tens of thousands of pieces of such junk — and millions more smaller bits of orbital debris — already clutter the space around the planet. Objects that enter the atmosphere leave space and burn, rather than join that debris field.

In most cases, dead satellites, spent rocket parts and other objects burn up completely in the atmosphere, but occasionally, some pieces survive the fiery journey.

Most fall into the ocean. In May 2021, for instance, debris from a 20-ton Chinese rocket landed in the Indian Ocean. China was criticized for not adequately tracking its used rocket stages, and the episode sparked ongoing debates on the safe handling of space junk.

In February, the European Space Agency monitored a dead satellite as it fell back to Earth uncontrolled over the Pacific Ocean.

In 2011, NASA dealt with a similar situation when a bus-size satellite made an uncontrolled re-entry through the atmosphere. What survived from the decommissioned satellite plunged into a remote part of the Pacific.

NASA said it will perform a detailed investigation of the latest debris incident to determine how the object withstood the extreme trip through the atmosphere.

“NASA specialists use engineering models to estimate how objects heat up and break apart during atmospheric re-entry,” agency officials wrote in the blog post. “These models require detailed input parameters and are regularly updated when debris is found to have survived atmospheric re-entry to the ground.”

Florida Gulf Coast transfer Zach Anderson is currently visiting Indiana, according to a photo he shared on his Instagram account.

Anderson shared a photo of himself touring Memorial Stadium early Sunday afternoon .

A 6-foot-7 wing originally from Apopka, Florida, Anderson averaged 12.8 points. 5.1 rebounds and 1.9 assists last season for the Eagles.

He shot 45.9 percent on 3-pointers and is a career 38.7 percent 3-point shooter (287 career attempts).

Anderson scored 19 points and made five 3-pointers last season in a 69-63 loss to Indiana at Assembly Hall on November 7, 2023.

The 21-year-old forward made at least three 3-pointers in 10 games last season and has one season of eligibility remaining.

Indiana currently has three scholarships open for next season after landing commitments this offseason from Bryson Tucker, Myles Rice, Oumar Ballo and Kanaan Carlyle.

Blue-Chip Running Back Locks In Official Visit With FSU Football

The Seminoles will host one of their top targets in the 2025 class later this summer.

The end of April is closing in and Florida State still only holds four verbal commitments in #Tribe24. The Seminoles haven't added a pledge since January 16 but things are primed to begin to shift on the recruiting trail in the near future.

By now, everyone knows that FSU does most of its work in the summer and that appears to be no different this time around. Last year, the Seminoles netted 10+ commitments from June to August, leading to the belief that a similar run could be on the horizon.

One of Florida State's top targets regardless of position in the 2025 class is four-star running back Byron Louis. The interest is mutual as Louis has already visited campus three times and has another trip planned in the near future.

Following his visit to FSU for the Garnet & Gold Spring Showcase, Louis revealed on social media that he's locked in an official visit with the Seminoles from June 21-23. That's setting up to be the big recruiting weekend this summer with a number of key targets and commitments scheduled to be in town.

The Seminoles are one of the schools standing out to Louis for a variety of reasons.

“What stands out to me about Florida State is, yes you expect them to come to you, but honestly, you have to want to be here. You have to want to be coached by these coaches, you have to want to learn, you have to want to be a team player, you have to want to be the best you,” Louis said to NoleGameday previously. “You know, coach Norvell always says, if you’re not willing to be the best you, if you’re not willing to be the best teammate, the best human, the best son if you’re not willing to be the best then don’t come here. I feel as if that’s very important because not everybody can come here, not everybody is invited here, not everybody is able to wear that garnet and gold.”

The Florida native is coming off a junior season at American Heritage where he rushed 160 times for 1,224 yards with 18 touchdowns to guide his team to a playoff semifinal appearance.

The 5-foot-11, 200-pound running back is regarded as the No. 201 prospect, the No. 14 RB, and the No. 28 recruit in the state of Florida in the 2025 class according to 247Sports.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle recently made a surprise visit to Palm Beach County, immersing themselves in a whirlwind of philanthropic and sporting endeavors. The royal couple, now residing in California, graced the region with their presence, starting with Harry's participation in a panel discussion in South Beach on Thursday, April 11. The panel, held at The Ritz-Carlton, focused on how to address the health, wealth inequality, and climate challenges affecting African youth, a long-held passion of Harry's.

On Friday, April 12, Prince Harry and the Duchess of Sussex headed to Wellington, where they attended the Royal Salute Polo Challenge at Grand Champions Polo Club. The event, benefiting Sentebale, a charity Harry co-founded, supports children in Lesotho and Botswana affected by poverty and health issues like HIV. The couple mingled with Sentebale executives and friends, including polo player Nacho Figueras and his wife, Delfina.

While Harry played polo, Meghan joined Delfina in the viewing area . This was Harry's second polo outing in Wellington, emphasizing his enduring connection to the sport and its charitable endeavors. It may have been a brief visit, but the royal couple's presence underscored the region's significance as a hub for philanthropy and equestrian pursuits. The visit follows in the path of Harry's father, Prince Charles , whose own fondness for polo also brought him to town.

  Meghan Markle  stepped to the podium carrying the trophy awarded to the winner of the  Royal Salute Sentebale Polo Challenge . The Duchess of Sussex walked past the first two players of the winning Royal Salute Sentebale team before squeezing in beside her husband.

A lesson in politics in 'Florida!!!' (Taylor's version) | Column

A column about taylor's lyrics and how 'florida' they really are..

Taylor Swift might now know how topical her song "Florida!!!" is when it comes to the state's political scene.

As the State Watchdog Reporter for USA TODAY Network-Florida, I cover the state government in Tallahassee. Any given day, you can find me watching a press conference with Gov. Ron DeSantis, looking through medical examiner data or interviewing state legislators about the bills they've sponsored.

But today, I'll be writing about Taylor's lyrics and how "Florida!!!" they really are.

Florida: Taylor's Version compared to DeSantis' Version

If you didn't stay up until 4 a.m. to listen to Taylor Swift's new highly anticipated album "The Tortured Poets Department"  then you're one of the few who don't have an opinion on the song "Florida!!!"

The song, featuring Florence Welch with Florence + The Machine, depicts the state like an old frontier town – disorderly and dark, with murder, binge drinking and drugs – the opposite of Gov. Ron DeSantis' tough "law and order" stance on crime.

"We're proud of being a law and order state," DeSantis said last week as he signed five public safety bills in St. Petersburg.

The governor has repeated the mantra at almost every press conference this spring. Whether it was signing a bill that would allow homeowners to remove squatters from their property or warning spring breakers in Miami, DeSantis has criticized blue states like California and has compared them to Florida.

"What passes muster in New York and California is not passing muster here," he said when he signed   "Property Rights" bill ( HB 621)  in Orlando in March.

Florida (Taylor's version) is different. Her lyrics echo the Sunshine State stereotypes that DeSantis is actively trying to change.

Regardless, the verses of "Florida!!!" hit news peg after news peg in every stanza, and it's easy for me to write about the latest in Florida politics using Taylor's talents. Maybe Generation Alpha will subscribe to the paper after this.

Bringing the heat in 'Florida!!!'

'You can beat the heat if you beat the charges too'

Is Taylor talking about the heat preemption law DeSantis signed last week?

The measure was in response to a Miami-Dade County proposal, which suggested mandated breaks in the shade on the hottest days – but Florida said no and passed HB 433. It bars local governments from establishing policies regarding heat exposure requirements not otherwise required under state or federal law.

During this year's legislative session, Sen. Jay Trumbull, R-Panama City said he sponsored the bill to gain support for a statewide mandate to follow federal Occupational Safety Health Administration (OSHA) regulations.  

But the law has frustrated and angered some experts and advocates for construction workers and farmworkers, who say workers need more protections, not fewer.

Florida and the smell of weed - legal or not

Smelling like weed is something DeSantis has warned Floridians time and time again may happen if a constitutional amendment on the ballot this November passes.

The proposal, known as  Amendment 3 , will legalize the "non-medical personal use of marijuana products and marijuana accessories by an adult" 21 or older if approved by 60% or more of statewide voters. It would take effect six months after the election.

DeSantis said he thought medical marijuana was enough for Florida.

"This state will start to smell like marijuana ... it will reduce the quality of life," he said. "Do we want to have more marijuana in our communities? I don't think it'll work out well. But it is a very, very broad amendment."

This session, local governments lost authority to the state on vacation rentals. The new law also created overnight occupancy limits, and fines for rental violations would be capped at $500.

There were just under 27,000 vacation rentals licensed with the state in 2022, a number seen as capturing only a fraction of the rentals likely in operation. 

Lawmakers have been scrapping over vacation rentals for more than a decade, advancing policies that toggle between more state control and more hands-off. This year, the state comes out on top, unless DeSantis vetoes the bill. 

DeSantis hasn’t commented on the latest legislation and his office declined to offer insight into his thinking. 

Florida may be a drug, but the penalties are getting steeper

'Florida is one hell of a drug'

If Taylor is talking about literal drugs, that's an issue Florida's lawmakers have continued to crack down on. This year, Florida added tianeptine, 'gas station heroin,' to the Schedule I.

In early April, DeSantis signed "Exposures of First Responders to Fentanyl" (SB 718 ) and said it would "make sure that the people that wear the uniform are protected," although medical experts say the new law could potentially cause harm and discourage bystanders and family members from calling 911 during an overdose.

DeSantis also announced an expansion of the  Coordinated Opioid Recovery (CORE) Network , an effort between the state's Department of Health, Department of Children and Families and the Agency for Health Care Administration. Its aim is to curb the number of deaths caused by the polluted drug supply and will be expanded to 29 counties.

The program, which started in 12 counties in 2022, connects people with medication treatment, recovery programs and peer support.

This is Florence's line. It's pretty obvious – Hurricane Florence hit in 2018. This year, an "extremely active" hurricane season is likely, according to weather forecasters.

Last year was the fourth most active season on record. Hurricane Idalia was the only U.S. landfalling hurricane in 2023 . It made landfall as a category-3 hurricane on Aug. 30 near Keaton Beach, Florida, causing storm surge inundation of 7 to 12 feet and widespread rainfall flooding in Florida and throughout the Southeast, NOAA said.

Taylor meets Tiger King in 'Florida!!!'

'And your cheating husband disappeared, well, no one asks any questions here'

One of Florida's most famous disappearing husbands was the spouse of “Tiger King” star Carole Baskin, who is asking the Florida Supreme Court to protect her against a defamation lawsuit filed by the longtime assistant of her missing former husband.

Leading up to the airing of “Tiger King,” a Netflix documentary series  that became a cult phenomenon  in 2020, Baskin endeavored “to address a false storyline (that) suggested she killed her former husband,” according  to legal filings  from the star. 

Baskin read aloud old diary entries on her YouTube channel and posted on her website accusations that McQueen, who had appeared on the show to discuss Baskin's former husband’s mysterious disappearance, embezzled and committed other misdeeds.

McQueen sued Baskin for defamation in Hillsborough County Circuit Court, but a judge there said the assistant had no grounds to sue. A state appeals court disagreed with the lower court.

Now Baskin is asking the state's Supreme Court to weigh in, raising the stakes on a series of legal arguments encompassing the First Amendment and defamation law.

DeSantis talks about Texas a lot at his press conferences.

The governor and members of his administration routinely blast President Joe Biden and Republican members of Congress for their response to the increase of immigrants coming through the country's southern border.

DeSantis reestablished the State Guard in 2022, and in February of this year, he sent more than 1,000 Florida National Guard members and State Guard Soldiers to Texas to help stop what he called "the invasion at the southern border." They joined Highway Patrol, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Florida Department of Law Enforcement members already there, a  press release  said.

Also in February, Taylor got wrapped up in a conspiracy theory about the president. Nearly 1 in 5 Americans, mostly conservatives, believed the singer is part of a covert effort to help Biden win the 2024 election, according to a Monmouth University poll.

Two-thirds of Americans, however, are supportive of Taylor's efforts to increase voter turnout.

The song ends with a shout out to this refrain I'm attributing to the state's population boom. According to the U.S. Census, Florida experienced a net migration of more than 200,000 adults in 2022.

NASA: Space junk that crashed through Florida home came from ISS, 'survived re-entry'

NASA has confirmed that a nearly 2-pound chunk of a jettisoned pallet of used batteries that crashed through the roof and two floors of a Florida man's house last month came from the International Space Station.

The space administration said in a blog post Monday that in March 2021, ground controllers used the International Space Station's robotic arm to "release a cargo pallet containing aging nickel hydride batteries from the space station following the delivery and installation of new lithium-ion batteries as part of power upgrades on the orbital outpost." The total mass of the hardware released from the space station was about 5,800 pounds, NASA said.

According to NASA, the hardware was expected to "fully burn up during entry through Earth's atmosphere on March 8, 2024." But a piece of the hardware "survived re-entry" and crashed through a home in Naples, Florida.

Nest cam shows object crash through Florida home

Alejandro Otero wasn't in his home on March 8, although he said his son was two rooms away from the impact. The crash, which could be heard at 2:34 p.m. in his Nest home security camera footage, coincides with the time the U.S. Space Command noted the entry of some space debris from the ISS, the technology publication Ars Technica reported .

“Something ripped through the house and then made a big hole on the floor and on the ceiling,” Otero told  WINK News , which broke the story. “When we heard that, we were like, 'Impossible,' and then immediately I thought a meteorite.”

NASA is analyzing reentry

NASA said it worked with the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to collect the item and, after analyzing it, determined the debris was "stanchion from the NASA flight support equipment used to mount the batteries on the cargo pallet."

The object is made of the alloy Inconel, according to NASA, and weighs 1.6 pounds. It is 4 inches tall and measures 1.6 inches in diameter.

"The International Space Station will perform a detailed investigation of the jettison and re-entry analysis to determine the cause of the debris survival and to update modeling and analysis, as needed," NASA said in the blog post.
