This guide is packed to the brim with things to do in Offaly.

There’s even a pub with a resident pooch. But more on that later.

Things to do in Birr

Places to visit in offaly (across the wider county), things to do in tullamore .

The picturesque heritage town of Birr is heaving with charm and character.

Developed around the iconic Birr Castle estate, the town boasts tree-lined malls, avenues wedged with elegant houses built in the 1800s, and plenty of things to do to keep you occupied.

Let’s dive into the guide.

1 – Kick-start your visit with a coffee in Woodfield Cafe

inside emmas cafe in birr

We kick-off every guide here with a coffee/breakfast recommendation.

When you arrive in Birr, point your car, bike or nose in the direction of Woodfield Cafe and head in for some pre-adventure fuel.

If you’re feeling peckish, the food here is said to be fresh and tasty! Get in. Get fed and/or caffeinated. And hit the road.

2 – Take a tour of Birr Castle (Top of Tripadvisor’s list of things to do in Birr)

birr castle offaly

There has been a fortress on the site of Birr Castle since way back in 1170.

Interestingly enough, the Castle is still inhabited by the same family that acquired it in 1620.

That’s pretty nuts when you think about it.

During your visit to Birr Castle, you’ll learn about the absolute wealth of history that this castle has amassed over the years.

3 – Then head for a ramble around the spectacular gardens (and see what was once the largest telescope in the world)

the telescope in birr castle

One of Birr Castles biggest attractions is its extensive gardens.

Known for the beauty of its unusual landscapes, visitors to the castle can explore an impressive plant collection, peaceful gardens, and the world’s tallest box hedges.

Oh, there’s also a massive telescope …

Back in the early 1840s, the Third Earl of Rosse built the largest telescope in the world on the grounds of Birr Castle (yes, that’s it in the photo above).

It was with this telescope that the Earl discovered the spiral nature of some of the galaxies, and between 1845-1914, people travelled from every corner of the globe to use it.

A grand spot to whittle away an afternoon.

4 – Nurse a pint in a beautiful old thatch pub

the Thatch Crinkill pub

Photo via the Thatch Crinkill

There’s something immensely special about an old thatch pub.

At over 200 years old, the cosy Thatch Crinkill is one of the oldest pubs in South Offaly.

If you fancy a pint and a feed in a unique setting with a boat-load of atmosphere, then get yourself here for an evening.

According to the owners, ‘ Today The Thatch continues to offer the very best of modern Irish cuisine always using the finest local ingredients and seasonal produce prepared by Executive head chef James McDonnell and his passionate team’.

You can’t bate a thatch pub.

5 – Plan your visit around Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival

Birr Arts Festival

I’ve heard from many people over the years that one of the best things to do in Offaly is to visit during the Annual Birr Vintage Week & Arts Festival .

Now in its 51st year, the festival is known for its all-inclusive programme that includes:

  • An opening parade
  • An artisan and craft market
  • The Ormand Flying Club’s Annual Fly-In and display
  • The Olde Time Traditional Fair
  • A busking competition
  • sporting and literary events

There’s also nightly entertainment in the local pubs and a spectacular fireworks display.

Right, we’re going to tip out of Birr and into the wider county, next.

You’ll find everything from skydiving to haunted castles in the next section of the guide.

6 – Spend a night if the very fancy Kinnitty Castle

castle hotel offaly

Fancy staying somewhere swanky during your visit to Offaly?

Kinnitty’s Irish Castle Hotel is a 19th-century gothic revival castle situated at the foothill of the magnificent Slieve Bloom Mountains in County Offaly.

During your visit, you can explore 650 acres of parkland, relax with a drink in the cosy Library Bar, or grab a feed in the Sli Dala Restaurant.

Expect distinctively styled guest bedrooms, high ceilings, cast iron roll top baths, and original castle features.

During your visit, you can learn about the history of the castle, including how it was destroyed in 1209.

7 – Get Spooked at Ireland’s most haunted castle

leap castle county offaly

You’ll find Leap Castle around 6km north of Roscrea in a town called Coolderry.

The castle here is often referred to as one of Ireland’s most haunted destinations, with TV shows like Most Haunted filming here over the years.

The story goes that a lady in red prowls the castle with a silver blade at night.

I can’t find one consistent story about what happened to her online, but the one that pops up most frequently tells of a woman that was held captive by the murderous O’Carroll’s.

Inside Leap Castle in Offaly

The story goes that she gave birth in the castle and that the baby was murdered by the O’Carroll’s.

The b*stards.

Another reason Leap Castle is said to be haunted is due to a grim discovery that was made in the early 1900s.

An oubliette (a secret dungeon) was discovered behind a wall in the chapel that contained hundreds of human skeletons.

It’s believed that the O’Carrolls would drop people through a trap door onto spikes laid out in the dungeon below.

8 – Test your nerve and get one of the best views in the land

If you’ve ever fancied giving skydiving a bash, then now’s your chance.

The Irish Parachute Club is a non-profit organisation that offers full training from beginner level to advanced.

If like me, you’ve never tried sky diving before, then the Tandam Skydive might appeal to you.

The tandem master does all the work during the skydive and training only takes 20-30 minutes.

All you need to do is enjoy the show.

9 – Head for a ramble around Lough Boora Discovery Park

lough boura park

Photo via Kinnitty.com

Yes, that’s actually a sculpture in the park in the picture above.

One of many, in fact.

Those that visit the Lough Boora Discovery Park can ramble along fairy trails, try their hand at fishing, and check out some very quirky outdoor sculptures.

There are tours available here, but you’ll have better craic just heading off solo and stumbling upon a lovely mix of art and nature.

There are several trails at Lough Boora Parklands, from short strolls for those looking for a speedy ramble to longer treks to take you right the way through the parklands.

A visit here is one of the best things to do in Offaly with hard to amuse kids.

10 – Nurse a pint with these lads in Killeen’s of Shannonbridge

Killeen's bar with dog

Photo via Killeen’s Bar Shannonbridge on Facebook

The chances are you’ll have seen a picture of the little fella that’s front and center in the photo above on Facebook or Instagram at one stage or another.

He’s gone viral a million times over at this stage.

You’ll find Oscar in Killeen’s pub in Shannonbridge, where he holds the fort with his owner Louise.

Killeen’s has been pouring a fine drop since 1929 and is well worth nipping into on your visit.

You might even meet Oscar.

11 – Lace up your boots and walk the Slieve Bloom Way

walking the slieve bloom way

There are several walks that I have in my head to try and conquer over the coming year.

The Slieve Bloom Way is one of the ones edging towards the top of the list.

Although the highest point of this 3-day walk is only 527 m, the views you’ll be treated to are extensive as the surrounding countryside is nice and flat.

Expect high, heathery ridges, deep, gorgeous glens, and plenty of streams, forest roads, and peace and quiet.

One for a long weekend.

12 – Step back in time at Clonmacnoise

Clonmacnoise county offaly

Clonmacnoise is another spot that tends to hit high in guides on things to do in Offaly.

This is an ancient monastic site not far from Shannonbridge that was founded by St. Ciaran in the mid-6th century.

Clonmacnoise became a centre of religion and learning and scholars used to travel from over the world to visit.

Although the site is now in ruin, it’s well preserved and managed.

Visitors here can see:

  • 3 high crosses
  • A cathedral
  • 2 round towers

You can also dig deeper into the rich history of Clonmacnoise at their visitor centre.

13 – Grab a feed with a view at Lukers

food and a pint at lukers of shannonbridge

You’ll find Lukers in Shannonbridge, finely situated along the banks of the beautiful River Shannon.

This little gem dates back to 1757 and is split into two parts; the old section and the new.

The new section offers breathtaking panoramic views of the River Shannon and the surrounding area. The perfect place for a meal with a view with friends.

The old section is home to one of the best pubs traditional pubs in Offaly.

We’re coming to the end of the guide, but there are still a few bangers left.

Next up is Tullamore, the capital town of Offaly.

Home to one of the finest distilleries in the land.

14 – Tantalise your tastebuds at the Tullamore Distillery

tullamore dew offaly

Photo vis Failte Ireland

Whhhhiiiiiiiiskey time.

They’ve been making the amber drop in this neck of the woods since the early 1800s.

The Tullamore Dew brand was founded by Daniel E. Williams (D.E.W – a grand bit of knowledge for you) and brewed in the original distillery until 1954.

In 1954, the distillery closed down. The brand was bought by another Irish distiller in the 1960s.

Then, in 2010, the brand was purchased by William Grant & Sons, who built a new distillery on the outskirts of Tullamore.

In 2012, they opened a visitor centre in a refurbished bonded warehouse previously used by the original distillery.

They now offer a highly reviewed distillery tour that includes a whiskey tasting.

15 – Dodge the ghosts at Charleville Castle

Charleville Castle offaly exterior

Photo via Charleville Castle on Facebook

You’ll find Charleville Castle just outside Tullamore.

Built in the 1600s, this castle is incredibly well preserved, in comparison to many others in Ireland from the same era.

According to legend, Charleville Castle is haunted by the ghost of a little girl named Harriet, who died tragically in the castle at the age of 8 in 1861.

Sights of her ghost have been reported many times, and by many different people, over the years.

A little girl ghost… bricks shat.

21 Places To Visit Santa In Ireland This Christmas

visit santa offaly

The run-up to Christmas is a highlight for many families every year, with twinkly lights everywhere, festive parties and nativity plays, and of course, a trip to visit Santa!

The elves at everymum have been researching the best options for visiting Santa in Ireland in 2023. Read on to find the best options for your family.

A trip to see Santa used to mean one of two options: The local shopping centre, or the local department store. Either way, there was usually an elf, there might be a present, and there was always a man in a red suit. It was quick and easy. A no-frills experience, but often the highlight of the Christmas.

Today, it’s not just about going to your shopping centre, oh no. There are now “destinations” and “experiences” where you can visit Santa in his winter wonderland or have a video call live from Lapland in the comfort of your own home!

No longer just a queue and a three-minute chat with the main man; there are train rides, magical trails, forest walks, feeding animals, sleighs, live shows, Mrs Claus, and gallons of hot chocolate (or if you’re lucky, mulled wine). Although of course, it all costs a bit more than Santy in Switzers ever did.

Searching online it might be difficult to make sense of the numerous destinations around the country. But don't worry, we've done the phoning and the googling, and put this list together for you.

It’s just a sample of the many Santa experience options available – based on good online and real-life reviews.

1.Birr Castle Box Hedge

2.birr castle, 3.leviathan of parsonstown, 4.charleville castle, 5.clonmacnoise, 6.clara bog boardwalk, 7.grand canal, 8.tullamore distillery, 9.slieve bloom mountains, 10.leap castle, clareen, 11.lough boora discovery park, 11 fun things to do in offaly, ireland (for 2024).

Birr Castle Box Hedges

One of the more interesting places to visit in Offaly is the tallest box hedge in the world, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, which is located within the Birr Castle grounds. This box hedge was first planted 300 years ago and now towers at close to 40 feet.

One of those known attractions within an attraction, the “box” of the Birr box hedge does not refer to its shape, but to the genus Buxus, which includes dozens of species of evergreens that people have used to create living walls.

This tradition of cutting and shaping box hedges goes back to Roman times.

Today, the box hedge is part of Birr castle’s formal grounds, which have been cultivated by generations of the Parsons family, who settled in the castle in 1620.

The seventh Earl of Rosse still lives there and pay close attention to the garden, which has a pretty hornbeam cloister walk.

Birr Castle, Offaly

Birr Castle is an impressive 90-room castle situated on a 1200 acre estate in the lush Midlands of Ireland.

This Irish castle is only open to the public for a limited time during summer as it still the family home of Lord & Lady Rosse, descendants of the Parsons family, who has lived there since 1620.

Considered to be Ireland’s oldest inhabited home, Birr Castle is one of the best places to visit in Offaly . The castle itself may not be always open to the public, but you’re free to explore the 100-acre gardens.

Start with a famous herbaceous border at the foot of the castle looking over the Camcor river with the oldest suspension bridge in Ireland.

Then the champion trees and the formal millennium gardens, a wildflower meadow, the oak tree thought to be more than 500 years old, and the stable block that has also been converted into a science gallery and museum.

Telescope Leviathan of Parsonstown

Another must-see in Offaly that’s inside the Birr Castle is the Leviathan of Parsonstown, a six-foot-diameter telescope built in the 1840s by William Parsons, the third Earl of Rosse.

Whether you’re an astrophysics enthusiast or not, this curious monstrosity in the Parsons estate is one of the best places to see in Offaly.

Nicknamed the Leviathan of Parsonstown, Lord Rosse’s reflecting telescope was the largest in the world for over 75 years. It is a testament to Parsons’ skills in engineering, optics, and astronomy.

William Parsons, the third Earl of Rosse, built this six-foot-diameter telescope and it was with this that he discovered the Whirlpool Nebula and devised a method of calculating the heat of the moon’s surface, which proved to be amazingly accurate.

Charleville Castle

Charleville Castle is a fine 19th-century gothic-revival building set in Charleville Forest located about one mile south of Tullamore.

A must-see and one of the strangest Offaly attractions, the castle is situated in Ireland’s most ancient primordial oak woods, once the haunting grounds of Ireland’s druids.

It was originally called Charleville Forest Castle and was commissioned in 1798 by the first Earl of Charleville, Charles William Bury.

This imposing structure was designed by the renowned Irish architect, Francis Johnston and was completed in 1812. Charleville Castle is said to be the finest example of gothic-revival architecture in the country and also reputed to be haunted.

With myths and legends surrounding the castle’s location, history, and former residents, Charleville has been featured on Most Haunted, Ghost Hunters International, and Scariest Places On Earth. Despite that reputation though visitors continue to flock to Charleville.

The picturesque castle even hosts events, such as “fright nights”, auctions and plays. More recently, it was the venue for the Mór Festival, and its successor, Castlepalooza music festival.

Clonmacnoise Ofally

Founded by St. Ciaran in 545 AD, Clonmacnoise was a center of learning for almost 1,000 years and was a virtual city until reduced to a ruin in 1552.

Situated in Shannon bridge on the River Shannon, south of Athlone ,  this 6th-century monastic settlement has become one of the main attractions in Offaly.

Clonmacnoise was declared a national monument in 1955 and is under the management of the Office of Public Works.

The site contains more than 10th century high crosses, a 62-foot round tower, the grave of Rory O’Connor, the last high king of Ireland, and other interesting historical and archeological wonders. It also has a visitor center with exhibits and guided tours are provided.

The graveyard surrounding the site continues to be in use and religious services are held regularly on the site in a modern chapel.

Located on Rahan Road, it is said that you can experience ten thousand years of history in the 10 square kilometers that span Clara Bog and its surroundings.

This place is a naturally wet environment, a nature reserve is home to many protected wildlife species. It has a Visitor Centre & Nature Reserve boardwalk, a 1-kilometer looped walk on Clara Bog.

Grand Canal Tullamore

Located in Edenderry and running across the Midlands, the Grand Canal is a very important part of the region’s history as well as a nice place for a stroll while enjoying the scenery.

This Grand Canal runs 64 kilometers through the villages of Edenderry, Daingean, Tullamore, Rahan, Pollagh, and Belmont in County Offaly.

It is used by walkers, cyclists, fishermen, and hosts various festivals and events in Edenderry and nearby towns.

One of the best things to do in Offaly is to either stroll or bike along the canal, take in the picturesque townscapes and discover flora and fauna through the bogland.

Tullamore Distillery

A visit to any place in Ireland is not complete without a trip to a brewery or distillery. Considered as one of the best attractions in Offaly, the Tullamore Distillery is a 19th-century warehouse, home of Tullamore Dew whiskey located on the grand canal.

A visit to Tullamore takes you on a guided tour where you learn its history, like how the whiskey brand got its name by using the initials of one of the 19th-century whiskey-makers Daniel E. Williams.

The guided tour is a mix of audiovisual and traditional storytelling to help visitors see, smell, taste, and understand the craft, time, and passion dedicated to each glass of Tullamore Dew Irish Whiskey.

At the end of the tour, a sample of Tullamore Dew awaits all adult visitors.

Slieve Bloom Mountains

One of the best walking locations in the country that’s still unspoiled and where you get to feel as if you have the place to yourself is the Slieve Bloom Mountains.

This vast mountain park has the largest continuous area of upland blanket bog and forestry in Ireland.

These mountain ranges also stretch through the towns of Offaly and Laois. It is an ideal place to explore, with eco-trails, forest paths, and a sign-posted walk known as The Slieve Bloom Way.

Wildflowers bloom year-round in Slieve Bloom such as the famed “carpet of bluebells” in May. They also hold yearly events such as the Slieve Bloom Walking Festival.

Leap Castle Clareen

If you’re up for a different castle tour experience then you must request a visit to this old fortress situated in the south of Brim.

Truly one of the best places to see in Offaly, and especially if you’re into the strange and macabre, the Leap Castle is considered “the most haunted castle in Ireland.”

There were no records that say when it was built exactly, only that it is somewhere between the 13th and the 16th century, and that it was once the home of the O’Carroll clan.

Townfolks and those who have visited the castle say that its chapel is home to many spirits, as they have experienced strange events, lights, and smells while there.

The castle is privately owned by the Ryans family, so it is recommended to call beforehand if you want to visit and explore inside.

Lough Boora Discovery Park

Lough Boora Discovery Park has thousands of hectares of cutaway bogland that has been rehabilitated to provide a world-class resource to all those who go to see it.

After the Irish company Bord na Móna extracted peat from this area, they converted approximately 5,000 acres to a public amenity where wetland plants and wildlife could thrive.

A perfect place to explore and one of the best things to do in Offaly on weekends, discovering Lough Bora by walking or biking provides you with more than 20 miles of trails. You’ll pass plenty of moist black peat—that Bord na Móna came to harvest as you hike or bike.

Make sure to grab a handful and experience this unique organic material, a precursor to coal, that holds plant remains from thousands of years ago.

Aside from being a haven of flora and fauna for nature lovers as well as families, walkers, and cyclists, Lough Bora is also home to sculptures made from retired peat mining equipment, as well as some that are woven from living willow, a woody plant that grows well in wetlands.

These days you can see more than two dozen sculptures at Lough Boora Discovery Park. The number of sculptures varies from year to year as some are added and others, intentionally made to erode or disappear.

Another attraction is the Fairy Avenue with numerous fairy doors, tunnels, and other structures woven from willow branches scattered within the forest beyond the sculpture trail.

Reception at the Visitor Centre is open from 10 am – 4 pm. From April – October 2019: 10 am – 6 pm.

The top five places to visit in County Offaly (PHOTOS)

From castles and distilleries to the birthplace of president obama’s third great grandfather, there’s an awful lot to see and do in offaly..

Birr Castle is one of the many stunning attractions in County Offaly.

Nestled in the midlands of Ireland, far from scenic coasts and mountains, County Offaly is rarely featured in the usual tourist itineraries. It is an off-the-beaten-path destination, certainly, but that doesn’t mean Co. Offaly is lacking in attractions. From castles and distilleries to the birthplace of President Obama’s third great grandfather, there’s an awful lot to see and do in Offaly. Indeed, to travel Ireland without stopping in the Faithful County for at least a day would be a mistake. The county even boast the greatest number of haunted castles in all of Ireland!

The following are our picks for the top five can’t-miss tourist attractions in Co. Offaly.

Clonmacnoise

A 6th-century monastic settlement that has become the main attraction of County Offaly, Clonmacnoise is located beside the Shannon River at an historic crossroads of Ireland. Founded by St. Ciaran in 545 AD, it was a great center of learning for nearly 1,000 years until it was reduced to ruin in 1552 by an English garrison. Declared a national monument in 1955, it contains more than 200 points of interest including 10th century high crosses, a 62-foot round tower, and the grave of Rory O’Conor, last high king of Ireland. The grounds also offer a visitor center with exhibits and guided tours are provided.

Tullamore Dew Visitor Center

Tullamore is the county town of Offaly, and Tullamore Dew is one of the most popular whiskeys of Ireland. If you’re a whiskey enthusiast the 45-minute guided tour of the Tullamore Dew Visitor Center, housed in the original Tullamore Dew Distillery on the Grand Canal, is a must. You’ll also learn how Tullamore Dew got its name, using the initials of one of the 19th century whiskey-makers (Daniel E. Williams). At the end of the tour, a sample of Tullamore Dew awaits all adult visitors.

Birr Castle and Gardens

For over 400 years, this property has been the private residence of the Earl & Countess of Rosse (Parsons family) who still occupy it and it is considered to be Ireland’s oldest inhabited home. Although most of  the castle is not open to the public, visitors are welcome to explore the 100-acre gardens and a six-foot reflecting telescope developed by an earlier Earl of Rosse in 1845. The gardens are filled with more than 1,000 species of trees and shrubs. The hornbeam alleys and box hedges are the tallest in the world.

Barack Obama Plaza

This is a funny attraction no matter what way you slice it, but an attraction it is nonetheless! In 2011, President Barack Obama visited the tiny town of Moneygall Co. Offaly, the birthplace of his third great-grandfather Falmouth Kearney. The town was abuzz for some time after, but instead of the town itself reaping the tourism benefits, all of the visitor attention has turned to Barack Obama Plaza, a rest stop just outside of the town.

In addition to a gas station, a Supermac’s, a Spar, and a Tim Horton’s, the plaza includes a tribute to President Obama, his Irish roots, and his most memorable visit.

Slieve Bloom Mountains

A vast mountain park with the largest continuous area of upland blanket bog and forestry in Ireland. Highlights include eco-trails, forest paths and a sign-posted walk known as The Slieve Bloom Way. Wildflowers bloom year-round including “a carpet of bluebells” in May. Annual events include the Slieve Bloom Walking Festival (May) and a Storytelling Festival (October).

Visit Santa Venues

Visit Santa Venues is the DayOut.ie guide on where to Visit Santa in Ireland, Christmas events, Christmas markets and festive days out coming up to and over the holiday season.

Over the past number of years, we’ve been to many venues and have received hundreds of comments about what makes a great Christmas day out experience.

Value for money, Santa himself, the overall experience and the present given by Santa are all contributing factors to what makes a great Christmas day out.

More and more proprietors are making investment into their visit santa venues with great Christmas sets and multi coloured illuminated landscapes, however can the entire experience be let down by not paying attention to the Santa gift? Is it that we’re too commercial, or is it that we’re just more savvy now and expect better value for money? Having a gift or toy that will lat past the Christmas period is something that will make you say, “hey, that was really good” and each time your little one plays with that gift, it’s a reminder of the venue and the experience. If any of you nice venue owners are reading here, be sure and pay attention to the Santa gift – it’s the number one comment we hear about!
