Just follow the sidewalk (and the crowd) until you reach the traffic light. Cross straight ahead, turn right and cross again. The entrance to Marina Village will be on your left, about 200-ft ahead.

visiting atlantis from cruise ship

If you are planning or have been on a cruise, then you are probably aware that one of the major stops for many Caribbean cruises is Nassau in the Bahamas. We were fortunate enough to go on another cruise that stopped in the Bahamas on our recent trip, and one thing I overheard was that there isn’t a whole lot to do in Nassau for kids. I might have agreed with that sentiment prior to this trip, but one surefire thing to do that kids will enjoy is visiting Atlantis.

You may have heard about Atlantis in the past but you may not entirely be sure what there is to do there. For those who are visiting as part of a day trip on a cruise, the biggest attraction is the Aquaventure Water Park. According to Atlantis’ website, the water park is spread out over 141 acres, much of which is lined with beaches. The park has a number of water slides as well as a “rapids river”, which is a combination of a lazy and not-so-lazy river.

Getting there from the cruise port is pretty straightforward. There are a number of taxis waiting just outside of the gate after you leave the port. We didn’t have any issues whatsoever with either of our taxi trips, and if you use one of the services that combine passengers from multiple cruise ships the price is only $5 per person each way. We liked that there were about 8 – 10 passengers with us each way, as it made us feel just a little bit safer in a foreign country. If you do feel like you want an additional amount of security you might check out Cheryl’s Taxi Service. We saw that they were highly recommended and had excellent reviews from various sites. I felt like the taxis waiting at the gate were absolutely sufficient, and I think there was an extra element of ease with their operation. We didn’t have to meet up or stay in contact with a particular service. The distance to Atlantis is approximately 2 miles from the port if you feel up to a hike. I would definitely NOT recommend this as the day trip is already short and there would be the least amount of safety with this route. Doing research on how to get there before you leave for your cruise is recommended. There is of course the option of going as a port adventure with your cruise, which will make the travel portion a whole lot easier, but it will also cost an additional amount per person and may restrict your time at the destination.

There was a little bit of a line waiting to purchase tickets to get into Atlantis. If you aren’t going as part of a port adventure with your cruise, buying tickets ahead of time would be recommended so you can skip this line. You can purchase tickets directly on their website so that there are no additional fees tacked onto the tickets by third parties. The website was a little confusing as to where to book the Aquaventure Day experience. It is currently located under Experience > Aquaventure and then scroll down to Aquaventure Day Pass Booking.

Once we got inside the resort there was a little bit of a walk to get to Aquaventure. There were people that helped guide us to the water park. There were also lockers available at Aquaventure for us to keep our belongings in, and we didn’t have any issue purchasing or securing these.

The water park itself is large so finding our way around was a slight learning curve. We finally locked down a beach chair that was between the Mayan Pyramid slides, the near-Pandora looking slides and the Rapids River. This made it easier for everyone to find each other at a somewhat central location.

I think the favorite activity among our family was definitely the Rapids River. It had a mix of calm, slow moving water and spots where you would go down rapids. The rapids weren’t too much for anyone in our group, and I would think that ages 8 and up would be great at a minimum. We also enjoyed the water slides but didn’t make it to the most challenging ones. There was also an awesome water slide among the Mayan slides that ended by going past a bunch of sea life through a clear tube.

A multitude of lunch options were available at the park itself, including grilled burgers, jerk chicken and adult beverages too. There were also restaurants inside the resort such as a pizzeria and mediterranean cuisine. If you are jonesing for Starbucks you can get that here as well.

Lastly, we did walk through a casino as we made our way in and out of the resort. We did not stay to play any of the games, but it was a large casino with slot machines, cards, roulette and the works. This part is definitely not for kids but if any adults are looking for a little gambling time on your cruise, this certainly fits the bill.

All in all it was a great day. We got to see parts of Nassau on the way to and from the resort and cruise port, and our family had a really enjoyable day. It is absolutely a worthwhile visit and one that can either be done as a port adventure through the cruise activities or on your own.

This was helpful, can we walk?

I wouldn’t recommend walking from the boat to Atlantis as it would take up a good part of your day. It is possible to do however.

Also thank you for the compliment 🙂

How to Take a Day Trip to Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas

visiting atlantis from cruise ship

The Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island is an entire tropical world unto itself. This Bahamian resort boasts casinos, underwater shark walks, and frolicking dolphins. As one of the most famous hotels in the Bahamas , the Atlantis also boasts multiple hotel towers and specific resort sections to accommodate a wide variety of guests' every wish. But, you don’t need to be a guest at the resort to visit this mega-resort. In fact, millions of visitors to Nassau take a quick taxi or water-shuttle ride to experience the resort's casinos and restaurants. From information on the top attractions to details about how to get there (and which day pass to reserve), read on for your ultimate guide to day-tripping to Atlantis Paradise Island.

Attractions and Things to Do at Atlantis Paradise Island

There are 85 gaming tables, 21 restaurants, and 19 bars and lounges at Atlantis Paradise Island. However, while throwing down some cash on the craps tables or roulette wheel may satisfy some visitors, others—especially families—are drawn to the Atlantis' aquatic allure; specifically the resort's spectacular "lost world" themed water park, dolphin encounter program, beaches, and the underground mysteries of The Dig, a walk-through exploration of the Lost City of Atlantis. Day tickets for all of these activities can be purchased at Discover Atlantis Sales Centers located throughout the property.

Given the hordes of visitors to the Atlantis daily, it's not surprising that the resort limits access to some of these attractions—notably the Aquaventure pool and water park area—to preserve a premier experience for hotel guests. However, that does not mean that day-trippers can't visit the Atlantis attractions, including Aquaventure; you'll have to pay a bit for the privilege (and expect a significant markup on these prices if you buy through a cruise line).

  • Dolphin Cay at Atlantis: Day visitors can swim and play with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins at the state-of-the-art, 14-acre habitat.
  • Discover Atlantis Tour: This tour is best known to day-trippers, in part because it is sold as an excursion on cruise ships. Expert "Navigators" guide visitors through the ancient city streets of Atlantis during a visit to "The Dig," a faux-but-believable archaeological exploration of an 11,000-year-old lost continent. The attraction is full of interesting artifacts, along with great water effects and glimpses of exotic sea life, including piranha, moon jellyfish, venomous lionfish, and a resident manta ray. A Discover Atlantis Tour wristband allows visitors to explore The Dig and its exhibits as well as the Ruins, Predator, and Water’s Edge Lagoons—but not the waterpark.
  • Atlantis Beach Day: The Atlantis Beach Day program provides all-day access to the Atlantis resort's exclusive white sandy beaches, with lounge chairs and towels provided. It also includes access to marine habitats and lunch at an outside venue.
  • Atlantis Aquaventure Package : Day-trippers can purchase an Atlantis Aquaventure package that provides all-day access to pools, beaches, and Aquaventure, a 141-acre waterscape containing over 20 million gallons of water with water slides, and a mile-long river ride with high-intensity rapids and wave surges. The passes are only available to guests staying at partners of the Atlantis Resort. They can be purchased (on a restricted basis) at the Atlantis Adventures Desk at the clock tower in front of The Coral.

How to Get There

Paradise Island (formerly Hog Island) is a 685-acre island off the northern coast of Nassau, the capital of the island of New Providence. There is no public transport to take you to Paradise Island—the local bus system, the "jitney," will only take you as far as the ferry terminal, so your best bet is either to take a ferry or a taxi.

To access Paradise Island by water, hop aboard a 15-minute ferry ride from Nassau to Paradise Island. The ferry departs from Nassau Cruise Port from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and costs $3 for a one-way ticket. On your boat ride to Paradise Island, a guide will also give you a brief history lesson of the island and its many attractions. Once you've arrived on Paradise Island, it's a 10-minute walk from the ferry dock to Marina Village in Atlantis.

If you decide to rent a car, note that there is limited free parking available on Paradise Island (and limited spots are found near the public beach). The best alternative is to valet your vehicle at the cost of $16.75 per day. Whether you're driving or opting for a taxi, be prepared to pay the northbound one-way $1 bridge toll. In taxis, this will be on top of your metered fare—and the average cost for a one-way trip from Lynden Pindling International Airport to Paradise Island is about $35. Another alternative is to be dropped off along the coast of New Providence to walk across the bridge (an activity that is toll-free). Once you've arrived on the island, there's no need to rent a car, as visitors can easily walk the grounds and explore everything the hotel has to offer on foot.

Day passes are mandatory for all non-hotel guests at the Atlantis to experience Dolphin Cay, the waterpark, the marine habitat, and the beaches. The passes can be purchased (on a restricted basis) at the Atlantis Adventures desk, situated at the clock tower at The Coral. These passes have been known to sell out, so it's imperative to book online in advance. World Travel Holdings also sells day passes to Aquaventure, Atlantis Dolphin Cay, and the iconic British Colonial Hilton. These passes are marketed primarily to cruise visitors but can be an excellent add-on for anyone visiting Nassau.

  • The Aquaventure pass includes admission to Aquaventure and The Dig, lounge chairs, and towels.
  • Dolphin Cay experiences include a shallow-water interaction with dolphins.
  • The British Colonial Hilton pass includes all-day access to the resort's pristine private beach and pool, snorkeling and kayaking, lounge chairs and towels, and a food and beverage credit.

Tips for Visitors

  • There's more to Paradise Island than just the Atlantis, so be sure to explore the rest of the island. We suggest hiking to the Nassau lighthouse for gorgeous seaside views along the coast. Of all the waterpark attractions, the underwater shark walk is not to be missed—imagine a turquoise tunnel full of predators. (It's as scary and thrilling as it sounds).
  • There is no visitor information center in Paradise Island, so make sure to consult downtown the tourist information available for visitors in downtown Nassau.
  • If you're planning on staying for dinnertime, make a reservation in advance, as restaurants can become busy, especially in the colder months. Additionally, the resort will limit attractions during the peak busy season to preserve hotel guests' experience—a hindrance that won't be an issue for you if you're visiting during the off-season. If you're visiting in the off-season (summer and fall), expect fewer crowds—for the waterslides and the bars and restaurants, alike.
  • If you're taking the ferry to Paradise Island, remember to bring cash. Although exact change isn't necessary, it's helpful as you will be expected to tip your tour guides, who provide colorful commentary and historical insight into the past and present-day iterations of Nassau and Paradise Island.

How to Get to Atlantis Resort From Cruise Port

by J. C. Thomas

Published on 23 Aug 2018

The Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island is one of top tourist attractions in the Bahamas, with its huge water park, dolphin habitat, incredible aquariums and day-pass policy. Cruise passengers docking at Nassau can fit a visit to Atlantis into their day’s schedule with no difficulty, as the resort is only 2 miles by road from the cruise port at Prince George Wharf. A bridge connecting Paradise Island to Nassau is open to cars and pedestrians, and water taxis run between the two locales. Taxis, water taxis, walking and booking a shore excursion to Atlantis are all viable options. Renting a car for the day is possible too, but it’s probably not worth the hassle or cost.

Things to Know Before You Go

Atlantis Resort and its sprawling facilities are open only to paying guests. Cruise passengers who are only in Nassau for the day must purchase a day pass or book a shore excursion to Atlantis through their cruise line. You can book a day pass in advance online or on the day-of at the resort or a kiosk at Prince George Wharf. You’ll need a cruise line ID to redeem the pass. Availability is limited, so book in advance to avoid disappointment. Without a day pass, you can still explore Paradise Island’s public beaches, along with the Atlantis casino and marina, where you’ll find numerous shops and restaurants.

Getting to Atlantis by Taxi

Taxis are readily available directly outside Prince George Wharf, and you can also ask staff at the tour desks inside Festival Place (the cruise port’s welcome area) for assistance. If your group doesn’t fill all the taxi’s seats, you will be expected to wait until other passengers, whether they’re tourists or locals, take the remaining seats before you leave. Bahamian taxis typically don’t have meters, so you should establish the fare before getting in. Expect to pay a gratuity of around 15 percent and, possibly, the bridge toll. With no traffic, the journey should take about 10 minutes, but it can be longer at busy times of day. Returning to the cruise port by taxi is also easy – you can hail one in front of any Atlantis entrance at any time of day.

Getting to Atlantis by Water Taxi

Water taxis, private services offered by individual operators, run from the docks immediately behind Festival Place to Paradise Island every 30 minutes between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. One-way and return tickets are available; during the boat ride, you’ll get a short narrated tour, and the guide will expect a gratuity. From the dock on Paradise Island, it’s a fairly short walk to the resort.

Walking to Atlantis

If you’re happy to walk 2 miles (or 4 miles for the round trip), you can get to Atlantis from the cruise port on foot. Head east on Bay Street toward the bridge; then go left across the bridge and walk to Paradise Island. You’ll arrive at Atlantis almost immediately; in fact, you can see the distinctive pink castle-like landmark throughout your walk. Pedestrians do not have to pay the bridge toll. If you’re purchasing a day pass, the time spent walking could cut into your time at the resort.

Cruise Line Shore Excursions

Cruise lines that call at Nassau invariably offer trips to Atlantis among their shore excursion options. Some include admission to the water park; whereas, others feature a tour of the property and aquariums only, so read the excursion description carefully. All these excursions include round-trip transportation between Atlantis and the cruise port. It’s advisable to read reviews of these excursions and consider the value and convenience factors involved.

The Bahamian dollar is equal in value to the U.S. dollar, and both currencies are accepted universally in the Bahamas. Be prepared with cash, including singles, to make payment of taxi or water taxi fares, plus tips, easy.

Everything you must know about shore excursions (Shorex) to Atlantis on a cruise to Nassau port: overview, good to know, highlights, cruise line price comparison, how-to book and get to Atlantis on your own, and map.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 26, 2023

The Atlantis Resort on Paradise Island is a world in itself with such an array of attractions - beaches, shops, water park, golf course and casino - that all cruise lines offer at least one tour to fully enjoy this iconic site of The Bahamas.

Aquaventure Water Park Day Pass

Until a few years ago, all cruise lines used to offer a basic shore excursion to the resort entitled Discover Atlantis Tour. This tour doesn't exist anymore. Instead, most cruise lines now offer the 'Atlantis Aquaventure Day Pass'. This consists of a 5-hour pass which includes access to Aquaventure Water Park, the beautiful beaches and pool of Atlantis, lunch, and transportation to and from the resort.

The Aquaventure Water Park is Atlantis resort massive 141-acre waterscape with pools, water coasters, body slides, rivers and more than 50,000 sea creatures where you will have a one-of-a-kind exciting day. For more information check the Atlantis Official Website .

The Aquaventure Tour is also offered in combination with two one-of-a-kind dolphin experiences - the shallow water interaction and the swimming with dolphins in a deep cay. You can choose to just enjoy any of the Dolphin Interactions or have this combined with the rest of the day at the beach. Celebrity, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean also offer a Sea Lion Interaction.

Shorex Combos

Disney Cruises is the only cruise line that offers the Aquaventure shore excursion combined with other experiences such as kayaking, snorkeling, or paddleboarding with Dolphins. Disney Cruises also offers a 6.5 to 7 Hour experience at the Ocean Club Golf Course for $599.00 including Green fees, clubs, golf cart and shoe rentals but not including beverages and meals.

Other excursions to Atlantis resort

Disney is the only cruise line that keeps the Discover Atlantis Tour and Beach Day cruise excursion - a 6-hour tour priced at $98.00 (ages 10, and up), and $83.00 (ages 4 to 9). The Shore Excursions Group offers a smiliar but shorter tour entitled Discover Nassau Town and Atlantis. This tour by Shore Excursions Group is just 2 Hours and 30 Minutes long, costing $57.00.

Good To Know

Cruise line price comparison.

Considering that shore excursion prices may vary by sailing, it is advisable to check updates and specific cruises. The following prices are indicative.

Click on the following cruise lines links to check for updated prices:

  • Royal Caribbean

Shorex, online or on your own

As most cruise passengers that have booked shore excursions onboard will tell you, the great advantage of doing so is the peace of mind guaranteed by the cruise line. You will not have to look for transportation to Atlantis, negotiate prices with taxi drivers, and when you will be taken back to the ship on time. But you may want to look into other ways of exploring Atlantis.

Online Services

There is the possibility to book online with the many services that offer shore excursions to Atlantis. Prices vary and it is advisable to check what is offered on each tour.

The following online services are well-established companies that guarantee the returning of cruise passengers in good time prior to the departure of the ship. IQCruising does not endorse or get paid to mention any of these services. IQCruising is just providing the information and you should be aware that you are solely responsible for booking excursions online with these third-party services.

Direct Booking

Before deciding which is the best excursion for you and your cruising companions, whether it is better to book onboard or with an online service, you may also want to check directly with Atlantis.

Cruise travelers that wish to book a day tour directly with Atlantis will find that the resort will request proof that your sailing on a specific cruise line. Prices may, in some cases, be slightly lower but do not include transportation to Atlantis, located in Paradise Island. Therefore, the savings (if any) may be minimal. But you will be in charge of your own time. Atlantis Day Booking Web Page

How to get to Atlantis

Paradise Island (where Atlantis is located) is connected to Nassau by two bridges but is a bit too far to walk from the cruise terminal. There are two ways of getting to Atlantis on your own. Either by taxi - sharing a large van will cost around $10,00 per person (each way) - or with a ferry boat.

Next to the cruise terminal, on the right side, on Woodes Roger Walk, you will find a Ferry Boat (costs around $8.00 USD return). The ferry will take you on a short cruise through the harbor ending at a dock under the main bridge on Paradise Island. From here you are within walking distance to Atlantis.

What's nearby

If you decide to explore Atlantis on your own, and in particular if you go on the Ferry Boat you may like to walk around and check a few other places on Paradise Island.

The Bahamcraft Center is great for local gifts and souvenirs. A couple of popular restaurants - the Green Parrot Bar and the super famous Margaritaville Bahamas - are ideal for a quick bite or lunch before returning to the cruise ship.

So what’s the best way to get to this island resort for your Atlantis vacation?

Where is Atlantis Bahamas?

SheBuysTravel Tip : Before you go, read our tips for having the best vacation ever at Atlantis Resort Bahamas .

Flying to Atlantis Bahamas

If you‘re flying to The Bahamas for your Atlantis getaway , you‘ll want to fly into Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau. (NAS is the airport code.)

Once you clear customs, take a taxi from the airport to Atlantis Paradise Island . Taxi prices are regulated so you won’t be overcharged. It takes about 30 minutes to get to the resort. Bahamian taxi drivers are courteous and professional.

You also can book airport transfers through Atlantis Resort . This costs a little more but may give you peace of mind to know a ride is waiting. Some Atlantis Resort package deals include complimentary private transfers to and from the airport.

Lynden Pindling International Airport

The Nassau, Bahamas airport offers the first TSA PreCheck program outside of the United States. That program helps speed travelers through airport security screening, getting them to the gate with less hassle and no need to take off their shoes or remove large electronics from their suitcase.

It‘s also one of the select airports offering Global Entry . That’s a U.S. Customs and Border Protection program that speeds travelers through customs when they arrive at their destination.

Getting to Atlantis Resort by Ship

If you’re cruising through the Caribbean islands, a stop in The Bahamas is likely on your itinerary. After all, Nassau, the capital city of The Bahamas, is the No. 1 port of call for cruise ships.

Chances are good the ship will offer an excursion to the resort. But you also can simply disembark and hail a cab to take you to Atlantis Bahamas , which is just two miles away. Buy a day pass in advance.

A day pass to visit Atlantis will entitle you to see marine life in the outdoor marine habitat, enjoy the lazy river ride, see the sharks in Predator Lagoon, walk through The Dig, visit the Atlantis Casino, stroll through Marina Village, shop at the Crystal Court Shops and be eligible to purchase any marine programs including a Dolphin Cay or Stingray Experience. A portion of the proceeds from paid animal encounters goes to the Atlantis Blue Project Foundation , which works to save sea species and their habitats throughout the Caribbean seas.

Getting to Atlantis by Private Boat

You can also enter The Bahamas by private yacht, pleasure boat or fishing boat. To do that, you’ll need the following documentation:

  • One copy of The Bahamas Customs Clearance Form ( download PDF )
  • One Bahamas Immigration Card per person ( download PDF )
  • Proof of Citizenship (passport)

For more details on how that works, visit this webpage . Atlantis Marina is the premier yachting destination in The Bahamas. Located next to the charming Atlantis Marina Village, seafarers can enjoy shopping, dining and entertainment plus all Atlantis Paradise Island Resort has to offer. This luxury harbor hosts vessels of up to 250 feet or 76.2 meters.

Will I Need to Rent a Car to Visit Atlantis?

No. Getting to Atlantis Resort is easy by taxi or arranged ride from the airport or cruise port.

Exploring the island off property is also easy and affordable by taxi. Plus, you’ll save money on the resort parking fees.

You won’t need a car for getting around the huge resort property either. Atlantis operates a free shuttle service around the resort. The service, included in the daily resort fee, runs every 30 minutes. You’ll never have to stand around too long waiting for your ride. That’s a welcome relief when your exhausted kiddos are in desperate need of a nap after a long day zipping down the waterslides at the waterpark!

The shuttle will take you to and from The Reef, The Cove, The Royal, Harborside Resort, The Coral, Ocean Club and the Ocean Club Golf Course.

Atlantis Tips, Tricks and Secrets

October 27, 2019 By: accordingtoamyrenee

This post contains affiliate program links. Meaning that, if you click on one or more of the product links I will receive a commission, if you make a purchase. This is no extra cost to you. Additional (yet, very boring ) details here . Thank you for helping me to support this blog!

We have been fortunate enough to visit Atlantis , Paradise Island, Bahamas, twice, and have learned so many different tips, tricks and secrets while planning and on our amazing vacations.

Below are all of the insights that I like to share with family and friends that are going to (or interested in going to) Atlantis.

Looking for must have items for your trip to paradise, check out my post on essential items to pack for your trip to Atlantis.

Use points for your stay

Atlantis is part of the Marriott Autograph Collection Hotels and you can currently use points for your stay at some of the Atlantis hotels (we used Marriott Bonvoy points at The Royal during our stay). Bonus is that if you stay 4 nights utilizing Marriott Bonvoy points, the fifth night is “free.”

We have done this, and it is a great way to save money and use those hard earned rewards points!

There are several fees/taxes in addition to the room rate

Be sure to factor these fees when planning your vacation (and check to see if there are any hotel specific/other fees/taxes):

  • VAT (taxes) – the rate was 12% during our stay and was added to all purchases, the resort fee, room rate, meals, etc.
  • Gratuity – we found the gratuity of 15% to be automatically added to meals, and we were charged $20 per night at check out for “Royal Gratuity”
  • Water park access (water slides, and 2 river rides…one lazy and one not so lazy)
  • 11 swimming pools/swimming areas ( 2 of the pools/swimming areas are reserved areas)
  • Paradise Lagoon
  • Predator’s Lagoon
  • Fitness center
  • Movie theatre
  • Marine Habitats
  • Beach towels
  • 2 bottled waters per night

Towels are provided

There’s no need to bring towels from home. They are available in abundance at one of the stands. We got towels both for the beach and the waterpark daily.

Bring lots and lots (and did I say lots) of sunscreen

We went through 5 bottles of sunscreen and probably could have/would have used another if we had it. Don’t risk sunburn by not putting on enough sunscreen and don’t break the bank by buying it onsite (the bottles were over $25 each).

Check out my post on What To Pack for Atlantis

Check the Atlantis website for deals

We were able to score an awesome deal on the dolphin encounter and the meal plan the first time we visited by signing up for the emails.

Look up the cruise ship schedules for the port of Nassau

This is a great way to plan your beach vs. water park days and times. The cruise ship passengers often book Atlantis excursions with options for the water park and/or the beaches. Knowing when there will be more cruise ship passengers helped when making our daily plans.

Dolphin encounter

This can be expensive, but my daughter really wanted to have this experience. I was able to find an awesome deal online that included a shallow water experience with the dolphins and kayaking. It was well worth it (and I found a great deal/promotion on the website), and a very unique experience.

Plan you transportation to and from the airport and the resort ahead of time

Not a fan of waiting for others to fill-up a shuttle prior to heading off to the resort or airport, take private transportation.

There are many different options, however, we have used Cheryl Bahamas Taxi twice, and highly recommend them. For a small fee, they will also make a grocery stop.

Food, Beverage, and Dinning Options

Stop for groceries.

Some items that we picked-up included bottled waters (the resort fee includes 2 bottles of water per night, but for 4 people in the sun, it is definitely not enough), bread, peanut butter, jelly, bananas, apples, cream for coffee (the rooms have coffee makers), crackers, small package of disposable plates and napkins.

This is a great way to have some of the comforts of home, save some (a lot) of money, and please any picky eaters!

The rooms have coffee makers

This is way a great (and affordable) way to start the day.

I personally NEED creamer in my coffee, and therefore a stop at the grocery store was a must.

Bring a collapsible cooler

We used this collapsible cooler last time and it was great.

We filled it with ice from the hotel’s ice machine and then added waters and the other items that needed refrigeration. They stayed cold for over 24 hours at a time (a slight inconvenience to drain and fill daily, but I’ll do anything for some cream in my coffee).

If you are staying at The Reef, the rooms have refrigerators. I did find out that you can rent a refrigerator from the resort (The Royal) for a daily fee (I heard various reports on the price, but they were $15-$20 a night).

The collapsible cooler that we brought was less than $30 and is portable, and is great for taking to the beach and pool…bonus!

Consider the meal plan

There are several factors to consider when deciding on whether to get the meal plan. You will need to crunch the numbers to see if it makes sense.

If you have children 6 and under, it might makes sense, as currently, children this age eat free with paid adults.

The first time we went to Atlantis, they had a special offer where children 11 and under ate free with paid adults and we purchased the plan. This ended up being a great deal for us!

We are all good eaters (including the kids), and we found that having the meal plan more than paid for itself.

Don’t forget about the buffet

Many of the restaurants require reservations. Having to make reservations in advance was difficult as we were unsure of when our days would start and end.

Having the option of eating the buffet for breakfast and/or dinner was such a relief. There were so many options and different live preparation stations each night.

We ate at Poseidon’s Table a few times for breakfast and dinner (we did enjoy Sunday brunch during our last vacation here).

This is a great choice for picky eaters as well!

Family style/affordable dining is available

Many of the dining options are family style and we found the following to be not only affordable (for Atlantis standards), but also tasty:

Marina Pizza – Large pizza and salad was less than $60.00

Kid’s meals – most of the dining options at Atlantis offer kid’s meals as well. We found these to be convenient and affordable (especially by the pool areas at lunch time), and portions sizes were perfect.

Offsite dining – while there is off-site dining options, we did not leave the property. We talked to several people that went to Margaritaville (walking distance), and The Fish Fry (requires taxi or type of transportation), and they enjoyed their meals at off-resort prices.

Bring an insulated cup with a lid

This is a lifesaver!

Anyone say hot COFFEE in the morning, and then cold adult beverages in the afternoon (well, maybe not quite afternoon, but at least after coffee).

Insulated cups are a great way to keep water and other beverages cold for the whole family while at the beach and waterpark.

Resort and Surrounding Area

While known for the aquaventure water park, the beaches are beautiful and shouldn’t be missed.

We spent a lot of our time at the beach.

We enjoyed our time at two different beaches, the more intimate Cove Beach and the busier Atlantis Beach.

Both were great and had their own benefits.

The Cove Beach has beautiful blue water with minimal waves/movement, chairs (many with sunshades), and great snorkeling areas.

The Atlantis Beach also has chairs (but very few with sunshades….however, the first time we were there, there were vendors that rented umbrellas), is busier, has vendors (like hair braiders), but my family really enjoys the fact that there are small waves, more fish, and the water is crystal blue.

Both beaches are amazing….it is the Bahamas after all!

Hair braiding is available on the Atlantis Beach by private vendors

My daughter loves to get her hair braided and looks forward to this when going on vacation.

I needed cash to pay, and did negotiate. I was able to negotiate the price by 30% and still felt good about the price paid and the service received.

Kid’s clubs

The resort has kids clubs for kids and teens.

When we were there, they had daily open house so you and your kids can check it out before going. We stopped by and it seemed like fun, but the kids did not end up going (we were all too tired by the end of the night!).

The casino reminds me of Las Vegas (which I love), but much more quaint and with a resort feel.

We participated in the slot tournament and it was super fun and quite the rush. We found the information in the Atlantean (which we picked-up in the lobby each day).

There is an underground tunnel between the hotels

Strangely, on our first visit, we did not go past the Marina outdoors, and the Casino while indoors.

During our second visit, we discovered that The Coral and The Beach are connected to the Casino (and therefore The Royal) by tunnels.

This was a great way to explore the other hotels and their amenities. The kid’s clubs, shops, theatre, dining, and many other amenities are in these hotels.

Check out my post on The Atlantis Resort

See awesome marine life at The Dig

Is an underground area that is home to beautiful marine life exhibits.

Somehow, we missed this great amenity on our first trip. It was such a hit this time that we visited it 3 times.

The kids (and I) particularly enjoyed staring at the eels and jellyfish….so cool!

Private Cabanas

We have not rented a private cabana, however, they seemed to be very well positioned and nice.

Be prepared to walk

Be prepared, you, and any little feet in tow, will be walking…a lot! There are shuttles between the different properties, but once in the waterpark and exploring within the main attractions, being prepared to walk is essential.

Shuttle between the various parts of the resort

There is a shuttle between the different parts of the resort.

We did not use the shuttle, however, I’m sure that it can come in handy for some families, especially those with young children, the elderly (the young at heart), and those with mobility issues.

There are so many benefits to planning ahead for your trip to Atlantis, and knowing as many tips, tricks, and secrets!

Yes, it can be expensive, but knowing these tips and tricks prior to your trip will help you get the most out of your budget and time so you can enjoy paradise with your family.

You can’t go wrong with a trip to Atlantis!

How to Get to Atlantis Resort From Cruise Port

If you're taking a cruise that stops in the Bahamas, take the opportunity to visit the Atlantis resort on Paradise Island. At Atlantis, you can relax on the resort's private beach, visit the Marine Habitat and zip down slides at the Atlantis Aquaventure water park. From the cruise port in Nassau, the Atlantis Resort is just a short cab or boat ride away.

Via Water Taxi

Walk to the Festival Place Welcome Center from your cruise dock. All cruise passengers must pass through this facility to exit the cruise port.

Purchase a ticket to Paradise Island from the water taxi counter in Festival Place. It costs $6 per person to ride the ferry to Paradise Island, at time of publication.

Walk from Festival Place a short distance to the water taxi dock.

Board the water taxi that will take you to Paradise Island. The boat will not leave the dock until it is completely full with passengers, despite the schedule. The ride takes 12 to 15 minutes, and the ferry boat captain typically points out interesting sights along the way.

Disembark at the Paradise Island ferry dock and walk to the Atlantis resort directly across from the dock.

Via Taxicab

Walk out of the Festival Place Welcome Center at the cruise port and choose from one of the many taxicabs waiting outside.

Tell the driver you are going to the Atlantis resort and negotiate the price before getting into the cab. It is only a five-minute drive and should cost no more than $4 per person. However, the price may vary depending on how many people you are traveling with. The price should also include the $1 per car bridge toll.

Take the cab to the front of the Atlantis resort and pay the agreed-upon fare.

  • A tip is fully expected when you exit the water taxi, and the boat operators will make that very clear.
  • If you like your taxi driver, get his number so you can have him pick you up from Atlantis to take you back to the ship. This saves having to negotiate a price all over again.

A Day at Atlantis Aquaventure - Paradise Island, Bahamas

Modified: Oct 10, 2018 by Stefanie Fauquet · This post may contain affiliate links · 32 Comments

atlantis day pass paradise island

When you dock at the port of Nassau, Atlantis Resort is hard to miss.

With over 2,300 rooms, 35 restaurants & bars, a casino, and the most awesome water park anywhere, Atlantis is more destination than a resort.

In the past, our cruise stops in Nassau, Bahamas took us to the Straw Market and public beaches. While we saw Atlantis from a distance, it never occurred to us to take a trip over to Paradise Island to experience at least some of the resort. Instead, we bummed around town and had a less than exciting time.

This time was different.

My daughter had been begging me for months to visit Atlantis, and a surprise change in our cruise itinerary had us docking in Nassau for the day. There was only one excursion I would even consider: An Atlantis day pass for Aquaventure Water Park.

Because of our excitement, we tried to get off the boat as early as possible. In our case, it was 8:00 am. We weren't the only ones with Atlantis on our itinerary — the cruise terminal was a madhouse. Our two options to get to Atlantis were: Taxi and Water Taxi. Even with a taxi, it took us an hour from the time we got off the ship until we arrived at Atlantis.

Since this was our first visit to Atlantis, we found navigating the resort to be a little tricky. After some confusion, we picked up our tickets at the Discover Atlantis desk, which is located at the Coral Towers.

Update: Tickets can now be purchased at the Atlantis Adventures Tour Center, located outside Coral Towers, overlooking the Atlantis Marina. Current prices for an Atlantis day pass are  $161.00 for adults and $99 for children 4-12.

No worries though — once we had our wristbands, the day was officially on. We only had a few hours, but we wanted to make the most of them. Atlantis Aquaventure opens at 9:00 am, and the water slides open at 10:00 am. Closing time is 5:00 pm.

The grounds of Atlantis are expansive— just Aquaventure Water Park covers 141 acres!

The path to the water park took us through THE DIG, through a 100-foot tunnel, where we were met with sharks, stingrays, and large fish.

The theming is unreal.

Atlantis-4

Once outside, we discovered there are eleven pools, seven mega-water slides, and two river rides. Of course, my photos are limited because this is, after all, a water park 😉

Atlantis-6

My favorite water activity was The Current  — a lazy river with some unexpected twists and turns. My daughter loved Splashers , the Mayan-themed kid's water playground with rope bridges, cannons, fountains and water slides. She could have spent all day there.

We spent a good couple of hours exploring the water attractions before we made our way to Atlantis' private beach.

It was darn near perfect.

The water was crystal clear and calm.  I didn't want to leave.

By the time we finished with the beach, our day was almost over, and we had to get back on the ship. As much as we tried, we couldn't do everything we wanted... not even a quarter of it.

Atlantis Aquaventure is a multi-day experience . To see and do it all, you need to stay on-site for three or four days. Believe me, once you experience Atlantis for a day, you will want to come back for a longer stay! Even with limited time, my family had a fun-filled day — hopefully next time we can check out the hotel, too 😉

** A few years after visiting Atlantis on a day pass, my daughter and I flew to Nassau for a mother-daughter weekend in the Caribbean. We stayed at Comfort Suites Paradise Island and had access to Atlantis Aquaventure for the duration of our trip— It was incredible! You can view our experience here .

A note about Atlantis Day Passes: Passes may be purchased by day visitors, but availability is limited – and may be closed – during periods of high resort occupancy. Most cruise lines sell excursions to Atlantis, and this is your best bet if only spending the day in Nassau. Admission to Atlantis Aquaventure is complimentary to all guests staying at Atlantis Resort.

Special thanks to Atlantis Resort for providing my family with complimentary Atlantis day passes. All opinions are my own.

What an awesome day you guys had! Atlantis looks like so much fun!

We thought about buying a day pass to Atlantis during our last cruise, but didn't do it because my friend was pregnant and wouldn't have been able to enjoy the slides. Next time, though, we will definitely go that route!

Complimentary Passes? lol! No wonder such a glowing report! I walked though the place once last year just to see it. I'm sure they made sure you were there not during a rush time when there's no chairs together, long lines for water rides, no lockers left. Everything there is so expensive too ($9.00 slice of pizza) If your into "Disneyesque" overly landscaped crowded theme resorts, have at it. Save your money, there are plenty of really lovely public beaches to choose from surrounded by natural landscape and not half as annoying.

May 12, 2012 at 4:32 pm

Hey Robin-- I did receive complimentary passes, but that in no way influenced this post-- if I didn't like something, I would have said it! I didn't receive any special treatment and entered the park along with everyone else. We did find chairs, but found we didn't use them much and instead wandered around for the day doing the slides and beach. I supposed I am into “Disneyesque” landscape because I loved the whole resort. I've been to Nassau numerous times and this was by far the best time we had.

July 01, 2012 at 4:30 pm

Enjoyed your post. How did you manage to get complimentary passes? I will be going on a cruise in Nov and plan to go to Atlantis on Nov 11 (Sunday) However, I fear passes could sell out for the water park because of crowds. I am a little nervous of this fact but of course the pass would be for all day instead of just a few hours with the exclusion offers. Any thoughts or suggestions? How many hours total did you spend that day at Atlantis? Thanks, for the information 🙂

July 01, 2012 at 4:44 pm

Hi Maria -- I received media passes in exchange for writing about my experience. We spent a full afternoon there, I want to say from 9:00am until 3:00pm. As long as you get off the ship early, you shouldn't have a problem getting passes at Atlantis-- especially in November. Purchasing through the cruise line will guarantee you space and transportation though.

We will be in Nassau Monday, February 11th. A stop on our Canival cruise. We so badly want to visit Atlantis' Aquaventure, but tickets purchased through the cruise are 472.00 for our family of 4... We will have to leave the resort by 1:00 p.m. to make outback to the ship which will deport Nassau at 2:00 p.m. Any suggestions on how to get a discount on these tickets? Our girls, 9 and 6 would only have 3 hours on the water slides, and that's only if we don't make them break for lunch. Any/ all help you can offer would be much appreciated!

February 10, 2013 at 12:44 pm

Does anyone know the full day water park pass prices? i hear they also can change with the seasons. Just looking to get an idea of prices. Thanks

August 14, 2019 at 11:19 am

We are planning a cruise with our 1 1/2 yr old in October to Nassau. Atlantis is a top pick for an excursion for us, but we haven’t decided. Do you recommend going there with a 1 yr old or should we stick to something more simple like a beach? We will on be in Nassau for one day and I want to get my best experience. Most likely we will return for a longer stay another time.

That's really hard to answer. If money isn't an isssue it's a nice day even with a baby. They have a small private beach that's lovely and you can walk around the aquariums, grab something to eat. There's the kids play area as well. The setting is also more secure than a public beach, though you could get a day pass from another hotel in Nassau.

November 02, 2019 at 12:35 pm

Question about your Comfort Inn stay. Do they always honor those passes once room is reserved? I’m worried we may not get in water park during busy time with Comfort Inn passes

Visiting Atlantis from a cruise ship

While our weather wasnt’t great, Atlantis was a lot of fun. Loved the water slides and aquariums. However, we did not book through our cruise ship and were advised that our taxi ride would be a certain amount there and back for 3 or more people, which turned out to not be true. We were charged almost twice as much for the return ride as the ride to Atlantis for the same 3 people. Definitely worth going, though, especially with kids.

many people smoke around the pool/water park area. The only area that smoking is not allowed is the kid's pool .

Grandchildren enjoyed the Water park. We went at the right time so there were not a lot of lines. We

Bought the value season aquaventire day pass since it was a day trip off a cruise ship. The grounds are large - could take more than ten minutes to walk from one side of resort to the other. Beach was beautiful. Aquaventure waterpark was fun - though could not maximize due to cool and rainy weather. Pools in abundance, plenty of lounge chairs, left our stuff unattended instead of renting locker and it was fine. Aquarium was gorgeous- loved that you could see from inside and outside, from bottom to top.

The staff and local people were so polite, welcoming and accommodating. The water park was a blast. We were there off season so it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Great place to come with a family. It is on the expensive side just a heads up!

Very fun place to hang out with friends and spend your energy, I would recommend doing this if you go to Paradise Island

Experience Local Culture and Cuisine

One of the most enriching aspects of visiting Nassau is immersing yourself in the vibrant local culture and savoring the delicious Bahamian cuisine. From lively festivals to flavorful traditional dishes, Nassau offers a plethora of opportunities to engage with the local community and indulge in the flavors of the Bahamas.

One of the best ways to experience the local culture is by attending Junkanoo, a lively and colorful street parade that takes place on Boxing Day (December 26th) and New Year’s Day. Costumed performers dance to the rhythm of traditional Bahamian music, creating an electrifying atmosphere that showcases the soul and spirit of the Bahamian people.

To understand the rich history and cultural heritage of Nassau, a visit to the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas is a must. The gallery features an impressive collection of Bahamian art, including paintings, sculptures, and mixed media, representing the diverse artistic expressions of the Bahamian people.

No cultural experience is complete without indulging in the delicious Bahamian cuisine. Sample the national dish of the Bahamas, conch, which is often prepared in fritters, salads, or as a main course. Feast on other local specialties such as cracked conch, guava duff (a sweet dessert), and Nassau-style seafood chowder.

Exploring Nassau’s local food scene is an adventure in itself. Visit Arawak Cay, also known as Fish Fry, where you can feast on freshly caught seafood prepared in traditional Bahamian style. Enjoy the lively atmosphere, live music, and mouthwatering flavors that make this area a favorite among locals and visitors alike.

For a deeper dive into Bahamian cuisine, consider taking a cooking class where you can learn to prepare authentic dishes from experienced local chefs. Gain insights into traditional cooking techniques, spice blends, and the cultural significance of various ingredients.

Immerse yourself in the rhythms of Bahamian music by attending a local concert or finding a spot where you can enjoy live performances of traditional Bahamian music, such as rake and scrape. This genre of music, characterized by the use of goatskin drums, guitars, and an accordion-like instrument called the saw, embodies the spirit and joy of the Bahamian people.

While exploring Nassau, you’ll also have the opportunity to meet friendly locals who are always eager to share their traditions and way of life. Strike up conversations, engage with street vendors, and seek out cultural exchanges that will deepen your understanding and appreciation of the local culture.

The 9 Best Gay Cruises for 2024 (+ Planning Tips)

W hether you are looking to hop aboard a Pride Week cruise with a major line or sail away with a smaller company that specializes in LGBTQ voyages, the following cruise operators promise a fun, safe and memorable vacation.

(Note: While many of these cruise lines sail to LGBTQ-friendly ports of call, travelers should research destinations to learn more about cultures, customs and safety in each location and determine what's right for them.)

Category Navigation Box Enhancement : Table of Contents - Travel - Best Gay Cruises

Founded by avid travelers Randle Roper, Patrick Gunn and John Finen, VACAYA bills itself as the first all-LGBT travel company in the full-ship charter/resort buyout sector of the travel industry to launch in more than 25 years.

"[VACAYA] was sparked by our own vacations, where we all had encountered two very different experiences," says Gunn. "The all-gay cruises were liberating, empowering and fun, but limited to a small spectrum of people. And while everyone loves a good time, there's more to a memorable vacation than just parties. Mainstream vacations offered more activities and destinations, and were accessible to a diverse set of people, but didn't always feel like a friendly, judgment-free environment."

As such, VACAYA set out to bring LGBTQ travelers from across the spectrum together in a welcoming, inclusive setting, while offering varied onboard activities and immersive itinerary options. Cruisers will enjoy traveling to ports around the world, in the Caribbean , the Galápagos, Europe , Antarctica and more. You can participate in shipwide events ranging from themed deck parties to performances by LGBTQ entertainers to rejuvenating yoga classes. Note that VACAYA's cruises are for adults only.

Previous cruisers had abundant praise for VACAYA's voyages, highlighting the company's responsiveness when booking and the kindhearted staff, as well as the genuine connections they made with other passengers on board. Many were also impressed by the events and entertainment options throughout their sailings.

In 2024, VACAYA will offer a number of voyages worldwide. The seven-night Caribbean Cruise on Celebrity Apex in February will sail round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, with several fun-filled days at sea in addition to stops in Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Antigua. In August, VACAYA has a 12-night river cruise in Northern Europe on board Advance by Transcend Cruises; this sailing includes the Amsterdam Pride event. The 11-night Antarctica expedition on Atlas Ocean Voyages' World Navigator in December 2024 is sold out, but you can join the waitlist.

Virgin Voyages

The Virgin brand has long been known for its celebration of the LGBTQ community, and cruise line Virgin Voyages is no different. The strictly adults-only cruise operator aims to provide a unique experience, with onboard tattoo parlors, impressive live entertainment, and dining options that include more than 20 eateries and menus created by Michelin star chefs. This line gets the stamp of approval from previous LGBTQ cruisers, who praise the ships' gender-neutral bathrooms, diverse staff and onboard shows with resident drag queens.

Virgin Voyages offers gay-specific sailings through travel companies like Atlantis Events, but its more mainstream itineraries still offer a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere that attracts LGBTQ cruisers year-round. Virgin hosts a number of events during Pride Month each year, including deck parties and interactive social media campaigns.

"Each June here at Virgin Voyages, we like to go big for Pride Month with larger-than-life events … all monthlong," the cruise line says in a statement on its website. "It's an important time for us – both internally within our crew and for our sailors – to honor and celebrate the LGBTQ community; who for so long has had to continually fight for equality and the right to be seen, heard and included."

Virgin Voyages sails to a variety of LGBTQ-friendly countries, including New Zealand, Greece and Spain. In June 2024, consider a seven-night sailing aboard Scarlet Lady departing from Barcelona with stops in Marseille and Cannes in France as well as Spain's Palma de Mallorca and Ibiza.

Atlantis Events

The world's largest gay and lesbian travel brand, Atlantis Events was founded in 1991 and welcomes more than 20,000 travelers annually on LGBTQ vacations. For its all-gay cruises, Atlantis charters megaships from popular lines like Royal Caribbean International , Norwegian Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages in addition to smaller vessels with companies like Oceania Cruises so cruisers will have a fully immersive experience.

On board, travelers can enjoy all the perks these ships have to offer (think: pools, hot tubs, sports courts and plenty of dining choices), plus special events like drag performances, motivational speakers, LGBTQ movies on demand in each cabin and high-energy circuit parties across the ship.

"As an LGBTQ cruiser, you're looking for a ship with lots of entertainment, including dance parties and events," says Marcos Martinez, founder of Men Who Brunch, a Black gay lifestyle blog. "One of the best cruise [lines] for gay cruising is Atlantis, since you'll be able to meet hundreds of attractive men and party all day and night on the ship."

Atlantis hosts primarily gay men; women make up about 5% to 10% of bookings, according to the Atlantis website. Previous cruisers said the atmosphere on board was fun, friendly and welcoming, though some noted that the company's customer service could be better, especially when it comes to details about the cruise.

Due to the company's popularity, its three 2024 cruises are already sold out.

Brand g Vacations

Specializing in all-gay river cruises – and now luxury ocean liners – Brand g Vacations was founded in 2011 and explores destinations all over the world. Chartered river cruises typically welcome between 40 and 200 LGBTQ passengers (and their straight allies), which allows cruisers to get to know one another in a smaller setting. Guests tend to skew more mature (think: 40 and older), and the line attracts both men and women.

Onboard entertainment differs slightly from larger ocean voyages: Expect more cabaret-style entertainment than massive all-night dance parties. Cruisers will also enjoy performances by drag queens, gay Broadway stars and more, on top of typical river cruise perks like sightseeing and lavish meals. Past guests recommend choosing Brand g if you're looking for a well-planned, relaxed and luxurious experience over a busier, more party-heavy vacation.

Brand g aims to provide a nearly all-inclusive cruise experience , with Mercedes or small van airport transfers, upscale hotel stays prior to embarkation, and unlimited alcoholic beverages as well as meals included in the fare. As such, prices tend to be on the high end. Plus, cruisers can feel good about their trip knowing that Brand g donates to causes in the U.S. and around the world that assist LGBTQ refugees, AIDS organizations, LGBTQ centers and more.

In 2024, Brand g sails through unique waterways around the world, including the Amazon, the Loire, the Danube, the Mekong, and the Columbia and Snake rivers in the Pacific Northwest. The line's small cruise ship charters also take guests to Iceland, Spain, Morocco, Italy, Croatia and other European destinations.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises sets the scene for an excellent vacation for gay travelers, from its extravagant annual Pride parties to its daily LGBTQ programming throughout the year. The mainstream line has received numerous awards for its inclusivity, receiving accolades from the Cruizie Awards, TTG Travel Awards and Travel Weekly's Magellan Awards for being one of the best cruise lines for LGBTQ passengers.

LGBTQ cruisers can start their vacations off on a high note with a special welcome party on the first night of their voyage to meet other travelers on board. After night one, there are other social events for gay cruisers to party and hang out together. Additionally, Celebrity Cruises was the first cruise line to legally marry a couple at sea in 2018, and it continues to perform same-sex marriages on its ships.

Past cruisers enjoyed their voyages with Celebrity, noting that the line was welcoming, the food was delicious, and there were plenty of areas to hang out as a group with fellow LGBTQ passengers or other companions throughout the ship.

Although all itineraries are gay-friendly, consider booking a sailing during Pride Month in June for an extra special experience. Onboard entertainment during this month includes guest entertainers, a flag raising ceremony, Celebrity's signature Pride Party at Sea and more. The Italian Riviera & France cruise will depart from Barcelona on June 8, 2024, on the new Celebrity Ascent; this 10-night Mediterranean sailing stops at ports in France, Italy and Malta. Private travel companies like VACAYA also charter Celebrity ships for all-gay voyages throughout the year.

Specifically marketed toward lesbians and LGBTQ women, Olivia has hosted more than 350,000 travelers by land and sea over five decades. Cruisers can choose between river voyages or ocean sailings to destinations around the world. On the lesbian cruises, expect a mix of nostalgic decade-themed dance parties, folk singers, writing workshops, karaoke and other activities. Cruisers can also relax poolside, spend some time in the onboard spa or take it easy in one of the ships' lounges.

Travelers who are looking to connect with others who share similar backgrounds can do so in one of Olivia's specialized programs. There are group and solo traveler meetups, as well as programs like Sisters, which is for LGBTQ women of color; Gen-O, for cruisers 40 and younger; Women in Uniform gatherings, for veterans and those currently in the armed forces; and events for OWLs (which stands for "older, wiser lesbians"). Past cruisers on Olivia's voyages report feeling a true sense of community and belonging on board, resulting in a fun, carefree trip.

In June 2024, set sail with Olivia from Edinburgh, Scotland, to Dublin on Windstar Cruises' Star Legend. Or, visit the islands of Tahiti on the line's Star Breeze in September. Other cruise itineraries include Alaska, the Greek Isles, Mexico and the Panama Canal.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International provides a welcoming and inclusive experience for LGBTQ travelers. The popular cruise line frequently partners with Atlantis Events to offer all-gay voyages throughout the year, but even the standard sailings earn praise.

Highlights of the sailings are the ships' entertainment options (including the Tony Award-winning musical "Mamma Mia!") and attentive staff, according to past cruisers. Itineraries typically include LGBTQ meetups at the beginning of each cruise for gay travelers to meet like-minded passengers. Outside of the sailing experience, Royal Caribbean has also publicly committed to supporting the LGBTQ community throughout the year, and it was the first cruise line to earn the title "Gay Traveler Approved" from GayTravel in 2016.

In 2024, consider a Royal Caribbean voyage that sails to gay-friendly destinations. "Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, [is] full of gay bars, clubs and gay beaches," says Martinez. Hop aboard Navigator of the Seas in May for a seven-night sailing round-trip from Los Angeles that stops in Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Ensenada, Mexico. Navigator of the Seas also hosts a seven-night itinerary throughout the year that calls on Mazatlan, Mexico, as well.

The Cruise With La Demence

According to past cruisers, if you're looking for one of the best party scenes on the open seas, consider an all-gay cruise with La Demence. Powered by a popular gay nightclub in Brussels with the same name, La Demence – French for "the madness" – primarily caters to a European crowd. Most passengers are male, though women are also welcome.

On board, passengers should expect to dance the night away at massive deck parties that last into the wee hours of the morning. The line prides itself on its top-notch DJs, impressive light setup and electric party atmosphere. Previous cruisers had high praise for the itineraries – which exclusively visit gay-friendly locations – as well as the fruity cocktails, themed nights (costumes strongly encouraged) and glamorous entertainment. Enjoy unique events like drag bingo, high heel runs and more.

La Demence sails every summer to European destinations like Greece, Italy and Malta. The 2023 cruise was chartered on Royal Caribbean's Explorer of the Seas. Fares include all food and nonalcoholic beverages, plus access to all parties, shows and the onboard gym.

A party on board The Cruise With La Demence

Courtesy of The Cruise With La Demence

Source Journeys has been planning luxury vacations for LGBTQ travelers for more than 20 years. The Miami-based company, with the vision of founder and chief executive officer Craig Smith, offers small group land tours and full-charter cruises for like-minded travelers with a focus on giving back to the communities they visit. The company also supports LGBTQ organizations, such as the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force and the Human Rights Campaign.

Past guests of their tours say their fellow travelers were as fun and interesting as the destinations. They appreciated the excellent personalized planning for the trips by Smith and his life partner, Rafael Rodriguez.

The company's cruises in 2024 include a seven-night Galápagos sailing in late September on a Relais & Chateau luxury yacht: Ecoventura's new ship, Evolve. The intimate ship accommodates just 20 passengers. Source Journeys is also offering a seven-night river cruise through Burgundy and Provence, France, in June on Avalon Waterways' Avalon Poetry II, as well as a seven-night voyage from Venice along the Dalmatian Coast. This ocean cruise scheduled in August is chartered on Star Clippers' masted sailing ship, Royal Clipper.

Frequently Asked Questions

When it comes to gay cruising, gone are the days of discreet "Friends of Dorothy" meetups. The term – a euphemism that dates back to the 1950s – was once used to indicate gay social events on daily cruise line programs, without explicitly calling out members of the community on board. It's a far cry from today's LGBTQ cruising industry, which loudly and proudly celebrates passengers from all walks of life.

According to experts, LGBTQ cruising is a market that will only continue to grow. Travelers can take their pick between cruise operators tailored specifically to queer communities and major cruise lines that offer festive Pride celebrations and inclusive onboard entertainment. As travel on the high seas continues to grow in popularity for vacationers, gay and lesbian travelers should consider setting sail on a fun-filled cruise vacation for their next trip.

When planning a cruise, vacationers should first consider what their ideal sailing looks like.

Gay-friendly vs. all-gay sailings: Cruisers should think about whether they'd like to travel aboard a gay-friendly mainstream line – such as Celebrity Cruises or Virgin Voyages – or opt for an all-gay, full-ship charter with a third-party vacation company.

"Each and every LGBTQIAPK person has a different level of comfortability in their 'outness,' " says Patrick Gunn, co-founder and chief marketing officer of LGBTQ vacation company VACAYA. Of VACAYA's all-gay charters, he adds, "For one magical week, our community gets to be the majority and live life out loud in the blissful utopia VACAYA creates on a gay cruise. That single change from being an always-minority to a sudden majority can have a profoundly positive real-world effect on individuals."

  • Travel style: Some cruise operators (think: Atlantis Events and La Demence) are known for their electrifying all-night parties, which may be perfect for gay groups of friends. Meanwhile, other companies like VACAYA and Olivia look to provide a more diverse selection of activities, ranging from tea dances (LGBTQ parties that, historically, included tea service) to philanthropic service activities to immersive onshore experiences.
  • Ports of call: Some of the most LGBTQ- and gay-friendly destinations for cruises include: Fort Lauderdale, Florida; Sydney; Barcelona, Spain; Taipei (Keelung), Taiwan; Helsinki; Quebec City; Auckland, New Zealand; Mykonos, Greece; Reykjavik, Iceland; Amsterdam; Tel Aviv, Israel; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and San Francisco. Countries that gay travelers may want to avoid include the Maldives, Jamaica, Morocco, Malaysia and Haiti, as homosexuality is illegal in these destinations.

Northern lights cruises: A guide to chasing the aurora borealis at sea

Fran Golden

Witnessing the elusive northern lights flickering across the sky might cause you to gasp because it's actually that cool. The colorful ribbons of green look like something from outer space — and they are. Auroras appear when charged particles collide with Earth's atmosphere.

Seeing the ethereal display, also known as the aurora borealis, is a bucket-list experience for many travelers. Cruise ships can take you to destinations where your chances of catching Mother Nature's special light show are improved.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Remember that seeing this phenomenon doesn't involve a cruise director flipping on a switch. Witnessing the northern lights requires clear and dark skies, late-night viewing hours, enough solar activity for the colors to appear and a big dose of luck. Keep that in mind before you invest all your cruise vacation hopes in this one experience.

Where can I see the northern lights on a cruise?

visiting atlantis from cruise ship

The lights are best viewed in the Northern Hemisphere and especially in locations on the so-called auroral oval, a ring zone over the polar regions. In cruising terms, that means prime viewing is in northern Alaska (which is easily accessible on cruisetours), Norway, Iceland, Arctic Canada and parts of Greenland.

Just off the auroral ring is the rest of Alaska. If you are on a cruise in the Inside Passage before April 21 or after Aug. 21 and are willing to be awake in the middle of the night (the lights tend to appear in Alaska after midnight), there's a chance you'll see the aurora borealis.

Cruise lines operating in Alaska — including Holland America , Princess Cruises and UnCruise Adventures — have northern lights sign-up sheets so you don't have to stay up all night, every night, hoping to see the display. Put your name on the list, and you'll receive a wake-up call or knock on your cabin door if there's aurora action. Plan to put on your clothes or bathrobe quickly, as the lights might only appear for a few minutes. (They could also last considerably longer.)

Related: Peak solar activity is forecast for 2024: Here are the best places around the world to see the northern lights

If you're interested in where to see the northern lights outside Alaska, the Arctic city of Alta, Norway, calls itself "The City of Northern Lights."

Alta's credentials include the world's first permanent observatory for viewing the aurora borealis; it was built there in 1899. A whole industry has sprung up around the lights, including such extravagant shore excursions as an overnight in a tent with viewing windows at a Sami dog-sledding camp. Alta is also home to the Northern Lights Cathedral, an architectural landmark.

Tromso is another Norwegian destination known as a hub for aurora borealis viewing. In late January, there's a northern lights arts festival featuring top artists in various musical genres.

Cunard Line and Hurtigruten are among the lines that visit northern Norway in the fall. However, the peak viewing season is from November to March (see below). Viking also visits but in the winter.

Iceland, Greenland and Arctic Canada appear on many expedition ships' itineraries during northern lights season, mostly early in the season in August and September. Lines with ships there include Quark Expeditions, Aurora Expeditions and Lindblad Expeditions.

When can I see the northern lights on a cruise?

visiting atlantis from cruise ship

Because of the late-setting and early rising midnight sun, it's way too light during the summer to see the northern lights in the destinations mentioned, but solar activity does take place year-round.

If you have a goal of seeing the aurora borealis in any of the destinations discussed here, you're best off booking as far into the fall as you can find a cruise. Norway is the only prime northern lights destination with winter cruises.

The lights like to appear in the wee hours — particularly between 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. — in Alaska. An advantage in Norway is that it's dark enough to see them for a longer period during fall and winter.

Do cruisetours in Alaska improve my chances of seeing the lights?

Cruisetours in Alaska can improve your odds of seeing the aurora because they get you to Fairbanks and other inland destinations in Alaska that tend to have more cloud-free skies than in the Inside Passage, where cruise ships sail.

While you might see the lights from Denali National Park and Preserve during the viewing season, venturing to Fairbanks and points farther north will increase your odds.

Fairbanks tourism folks like to brag that if you visit for at least three nights between Aug. 21 and April 21, your chances of seeing the aurora borealis are more than 90%. (That assumes you are out actively looking during the late evening hours.)

Since your cruisetour might not visit for three nights, consider booking extra hotel nights before or after your cruise. Other things to do in this laid-back city (human population: about 100,000; moose population: 16,000) include riverboat tours, gold panning and yoga with reindeer.

You can also see the lights in Canada's Yukon Territory, including in the gold rush town of Dawson City, which is visited on some Holland America cruisetours.

Should I go on a cruise just to see the northern lights?

Yes, but remember that the phenomenon is dependent on the weather (clear skies required) and hard to predict, despite scientists' best efforts.

Viking has wintertime cruises to Norway from London specifically designed to track the lights in the Norwegian Sea during the peak viewing season — throughout the cruise but especially above the Arctic Circle in Tromso and Alta (where the sailings stop overnight). It's dark in these locales in winter, increasing your chances.

Hurtigruten is so invested in its northern lights experiences that it has hired famed northern lights astronomer Tom Kerss as its "chief aurora chaser." He will serve as an onboard expert, offering talks and workshops for passengers.

The line is so sure you will see the lights on the October-through-March sailings of its year-round 11- and 12-day Norwegian Coastal Express itineraries that the company has a guarantee called the Northern Lights Promise. If the deck's officers don't announce to all on board that the northern lights are happening, you can get a six- or seven-day Norwegian Coastal cruise for free.
