     Arrival at Vizag

Start off your journey to Vizag and arrive by afternoon. Check in to your hotel and have a delicious meal.

Hotel to stay

  • The Gateway Hotel Vizag – Situated in close proximity to the commercial district and tourist attractions, this hotel is the perfect choice for visiting all the places.

With a stunning view of RK Beach, this hotel in Visakhapatnam is a perfect seaside retreat to relax and unwind. We had a great stay at this hotel. The rooms are large and spacious with modern amenities. The bathroom is large and clean. The staff is courteous and very helpful. We booked a sea-facing room, which had a large window, facing the garden/swimming pool area and the sea. All the nearby attractions are at a walkable distance from this hotel. So it was a perfect place to stay if you are a tourist. There are 2/3 restaurants inside the hotel but I visited only one among them – Ming Garden. This restaurant offers Chinese cuisine and I have to say that I had the best Chinese food after a very long time. It was indeed a treat to my taste buds. If you are planning a visit to Vizag don’t forget to visit this place and enjoy your trip.

Comprehensive Visakhapatnam (Vizag) Tour Guide

Comprehensive Visakhapatnam Tour Guide Feature Image

Visakhapatnam also know as Vizag always fascinates me by its dynamic offering, this place got almost everything, hills, caves, temples, sea beaches, and some finger-licking foods. Very few places in India could make someone experience sea and mountains on a single trip and Vizag is one of those rare places.

I have been to different places around Vizag at different times. First I heard about this place in my school life, we had an excursion there. Second during my Kolkata – Kanyakumari Ride, after that while returning back Kolkata from Bangalore last year (2017) and finally in 2019 during Durga Puja.

Although, I admit that I missed a couple of remarkable things there like Simhachalam Temple & Vizag – Araku train ride, but I am writing this to encourage everyone out there to have a visit at least once in a life.

Accommodation in Vizag

I would prefer to stay near/at RK Beach which ensures local sightseeing by walk and you can relax even on sea beaches. Balaji beach guest house and Beach lane holiday home will be my choice to stay in Vizag, first one is a budget accommodation @Rs. 1200/- approx and the second is more towards coziness & homely feeling @Rs. 2000/- (we had very good Bengali food here in 2016).

There are many budget hotels available near the railway station area but the beach will be a little far. Also, there are numerous holiday homes available from different banks or government offices.

Sightseeing

Visakhapatnam has numerous sightseeing spots and almost every place is either very scenic or informative. If you are planning to visit all the places minimum of three days will be needed to cover most of the places.

Kailashagiri

Probably, this one is the most famous point people consider visiting in Vizag. This park located at an elevated height of 173 meters, it also serves a magnificent view of Rishikonda Beach and part of Vizag city. The Shiva & Durga sculpture will definitely wonder everyone. For a 360 degree view, you can ride the toy train and ropeway at a very nominal cost. Even a few food stalls are available to have snacks or lunch.

  • Entry Fees: INR 5, Ropeway INR 90, and Toy train INR 150.
  • Timing: 6 AM to 7:30 PM.

Shiva & Durga, Kailashagiri, Vizag

Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha (Simhachalam) temple

Generally known as Simhachalam temple, is located 500 meters above the sea and approx. 20 Kilometers away from the main city. Don’t miss the bird’s eye view of the city from the top while visiting. Truly, despite my multiple visits to Vizag, I always missed this place due to some unavoidable reasons, but it will on top priority during my next visit.

As per local cab drivers, everyone needs to take a bus from downhill to reach the temple although not sure about reality.

  • Special Darshan INR 100.

Ramakrishna Beach

Also popular as RK Beach, is one of the happening, clean and beautiful beaches in India. This place becomes the main attraction of the city in the evening. All the tourists enjoy seating here & soaking good vibes. Whatever a tourist need, this place gets everything food joints, souvenir shops, attraction points, etc. Few major attractions of Vizag like INS Kurusura, Matsyadarshini, Vishaka Aircraft museum, and memorials are located here, within a kilometer or so.

Please keep in mind sea-bathing in RK Beach is prohibited by local authorities so please abide by the rules.

Beautifully decorated RK Beach

VUDA is something you will see at every corner of the city, it abbreviates as Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority. This park, on the seashore, is a gift for all tourists and localities. Children can have their fun and others can see the sea waves, within 5-10 minutes’ walk, you can reach a lighthouse. Just climb it and amaze yourself, beware of local drinkers.

  • Entry Fees: INR 20 (9 AM to 2 PM) & INR 60 (2 PM to 8:30PM).
  • Timing: 9 AM to 8:30 PM.

Rishikonda Beach

This beach is for someone who loves sea bathing. There are stalls to have food, beverages, or even ornaments. Selfie lovers can click some cool pictures too. Within 10 Kilometers from RK. Beach, this beach feels good too in the evening, much less crowded, will make happy those who love to spend quality time. Even you can take shower for INR 5 after sea-bath.

Rishikonda Beach

INS Kurusura

If you want to watch real submarine and that too served nation for 31 years, also participated in India – Pakistan war (1971), visit this place. I believe our visit pays our gratitude towards Marine, especially this submarine. Separate tickets are available for entry, videography, etc. You will definitely leave this place with more knowledge.

  • Entry Fees: Adult INR 40 & Child INR 20.
  • Timing: Tuesday to Saturday 2 PM to 8:30 PM, Sunday 10 AM to 12:30 PM & 2 PM to 8:30 PM and Monday closed.
  • Still camera INR 50 & Video camera INR 200.

INS Kurusura, RK Beach, Visakhapatnam

Visakha Aircraft (TU 142) Museum

This museum is for Aircraft, the same as above, this is a must-visit point. An audio guide is available at the entrance and the whole museum is well marked to give knowledge of how aircraft ecosystem works. In addition to the knowledge, you can witness real TU 142 aircraft here.

  • Entry Fees: Adult INR 70 & Child INR 40.

  • Entry Fees: Adult INR 30 & Child INR 20.
  • Timing: 9 AM to 9 PM.
  • Still ca mera INR 20 and Video camera INR 50.

You may check out the video below.

Fish Harbour

I never visited this place, although some people said, it is a place for fish lovers. Fact is the majority of fish we see in any market, ships from Visakhapatnam, probably from this harbour.

Visakha Museum

This place showcases many Naval types of equipment for general knowledge, some kids may get inspired to join the Navy in the future.

  • Entry Fees: Adult INR 10 & Child INR 5.
  • Timing: Monday to Thursday 11 AM to 7 PM, Weekend 12 PM to 8 PM and Friday closed.

Visakha Naval Museum, Vizag

Yarada Beach

Yarada Beach is also a famous beach in Visakhapatnam, rather I should say this is the most beautiful beach there. Almost at a distance of 23 kilometers from the Vizag this place is one of the must-visit spot.

Yarada Beach View from far, Vizag

Dolphin Nose Light House

I personally missed this place numerous times but last year (2019) when I visited the place I understood the significance of this place in the Vizag tour. One the place where you can see the entire Vizag sea and the Bay of Bengal from an elevated platform. The seawater looks bluer and a lot beautiful.

  • Entry Fees: Adult INR 10 & Child INR 3, Still Camera INR 20 & Video Camera INR 25.
  • Timing: 3 pM to 5 PM.

Dolphin Nose Light House, Vizag

Tribe Museum, Araku Valley

Araku is approx. 120 kilometers from Vizag at an average elevation of 1000 meters and on the way you can see a lot of places like Galikonda View Point, Katiki falls, Borra caves. I visited Araku more than a decade ago, still, I can rejoice those memories. This place is not for visiting tourist attractions although we got a tribal museum there which demonstrates tribal life, rather relaxing.

  • Timing: 9 AM to 7 PM.

Tribe Museum Araku

I did not get a chance to visit Galikonda View Point & Katiki falls due to road construction but definitely will go on the next visit.

While Araku valley offers you relaxing weather, the other side Borra cave will feel you wonder.

One of the largest caves in India and deepest too. It is made of Karstic Limestone and located at an average elevation of 700 meters. You have to pay for entry tickets as well as photography devices. You can check biological and geological environment details here . Peoples say there are approx 440 steps, you need to climb down to explore the cave. The inside temperature of the cave is always less than outside. The formations look more attractive with the RGB lighting, fitted by APTDC.

Try to explore the cave completely and witness one of the millions of wonders of nature. For heart patients, think before you move down because you have to climb while returning and the last piece of advice would be to watch before the rush, most of the surface may feel slippery.

  • Entry Fees: Adult INR 60 & Child INR 45.
  • Timing: 10 AM to 5 PM.
  • Mobile camera INR 25, Still camera INR 100 & Video camera INR 100.

Borra Cave

Also, don’t forget to visit Ramanaidu Studio, Bheemli Beach. There are few more places I never been to but others recommend visiting like Simhachalam, Ketaki Falls, and Indira Gandhi National Zoological Park, etc.

  • Zoological Park Entry Fees: Adult INR 20 & Child INR 10. Tuesday to Sunday 9 AM to 5 PM and Monday closed.
  • Ramanaidu Studio Entry Fees: Adult INR 50 and Child INR 25. Camera INR 60.

Fooding Option

Although you will get all types of cuisine here. I would recommend trying South Indian food, those are cheap and tastes good too. Try filter coffee, Dosa, and Idli. If you don’t like these, move out a little bit you will find Puri-Sabji, Momos or bread toasts, etc. Those who love Bengali food may taste at Sonar Bangla and other restaurants. If you love Mughlai or tandoori dish, try Hotel Kamat.

If you are non-vegetarian and love chicken, don’t forget to order Bamboo Chicken before entering Borra cave, they will take 50% as advance and serve you once back. I am damn sure, everyone will love it.

Best time to visit Visakhapatnam

Vizag remains pleasant to moderate throughout the year. But I would always recommend visiting after the monsoon, these time greenery will be more and the waterfall will have plenty of flow too. Generally, you will feel the heat in the daytime and a pleasant cold at night. December-January will be very cold at Araku and inside borra cave especially but overall feel better.

Transportation for sightseeing

If you are in the budget, reserve an auto for day sightseeing else hotel guys can help to book a cab for you. For Araku sightseeing, you can take a train which routes many tunnels and jungle. Visit Borra Cave and board into the reserved car to Araku and return the next day by car (few people find it more convenient due to the onwards journey schedule from Vizag). Always research before you book transport and justify the rates.

Suggested Itineraries

  • Day 1: Reach Vizag, explore RK Beach, and visit Matsyadarshini, INS Kurusura, TU 142 Aircraft museum near the beach in the evening.
  • Day 2: Reserve your cab/auto for the day, places to cover Simhachalam Temple,  Indira Gandhi National Zoological Park, Kailasagiri, Rishikonda Beach, Visakha museum.
  • Day 3: Take train/cab to Araku, on the way Borra cave.
  • Day 4: Visit Tribal museum, Araku. Start towards Vizag on the way visit Kataki falls, Galikonda View Point. If you reach early you may plan for Dolphin nose, Harbour, Yarada beach, few more places.
  • Day 5: Leisure day.

You can modify according to your taste and requirement.

1. Ropeway Ride to Kailasagiri Park :

Situated on a hilltop, Kailashgiri Park is a major sightseeing place in Visakhapatnam. The major attraction of this park is the 40 feet tall statue of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The name of this park is derived from these statues and is considered to be the home of Lord Shiva and Parvati. Surrounded by exquisitely landscaped gardens, the Kailasagiri Park lies at the height of around 360 feet above sea level, covering above 350 acres of area. There are two ways to reach Kailasagiri, by ropeway or via road. One of the best places for sightseeing in Vizag, the park offers mesmerizing views of the city and the beaches in the area.

2. Visit INS Kursura Submarine Museum :

The next thing to do in Vizag is to visit the submarine museum, located on Ramakrishna Beach. It is a must-visit place in the city, especially if you want to learn more about the Indian Navy. Established in 2011, the submarine museum houses the INS Kurusura, which was built by Russians in the year 1969. It served the Indian Navy and was decommissioned in the year 2001 and converted into a museum in 2002. A visit to this museum will help you understand how the submarine works and how is the life of submariners. Known as the first submarine turned museum in Asia, INS Kursura Submarine Museum opens from 2 PM to 8:30 PM every day. When planning a visit to Vizag, do not miss a visit to this incredible museum.

3. Seek Divine Blessings at Simhachalam Temple :

One of the most beautiful things to see in Vizag is the 11th-century Hindu temple dedicated to the Narasimha Avatar of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. The striking architecture of this temple reflects the influences of Cholas, Dravidian, Kalinga, and Chalukyas styles. Right from the intricate carvings on the inner wall of the temple to the idol of Lord Vishnu in the temple, everything is appealing here. It is a perfect place to spend time in serenity while seeking the blessings of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi.

With a height of 358 metres above sea level, the Dolphin’s Nose point offers stunning views of the hills and sea. The striking green colour and serenity make it one of the best tourist attractions in Visakhapatnam.

5. Explore the Borra Caves :

One of the best offbeat attractions in Vizag, Borra Caves, is said to be the deepest caves in India. Situated on the East coast of the city, the Borra Caves are surrounded by the Ananthagiri hills of Araku Valley. He found a Shiva Ling inside the cave and believed that his cows were protected by Lord Shiva. Later the villagers built a temple outside the Borra caves, and thousands of devotees come here everyday to pay their respects to Lord Shiva.

6. Experience the Wildlife at Indira Gandhi Zoological Park :

While it is a less visited beach, it makes people fall in love with its crystal clear water, corals, and fascinating sunrise and sunsets on this coastline. With scenic beauty all around, the beach offers a perfect backdrop to capture some beautiful pictures.

Rama Krishna Beach is also popularly known as RK beach. It is one of the most popular beaches of Vizag, and I must say this is the place which is the heart of the city. The RK beach name comes from Ramakrishna Mission ashrama over the beach road from the park.

The beach is situated on the east coast of the Bay of Bengal , which is about two to three from the city. The beach is very easy to access, and this is a place where all ages people can enjoy their time.

It has super clean water; it is good for those who love to play with water and along with also you can able to find camels and horse rides. Besides the beach, there are also you find other spots to visit which are aquariums and museums. It is one of the best places in Visakhapatnam on a 1-day trip.

Google Review – I have never seen a beach with ROCKS. So it was a great experience for me to be there. And at the right time in the evening, black clouds surrounding the beach look more aggressive. The view was extremely awesome. Just see these pictures and enjoy them.

waterfalls

Katiki Waterfalls is one of the best sightseeing places in Vizag. I must recommend this place if you are an adventure lover. The place is situated in the Alluri Sitaram Raju district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. This is the place where you can see the outstanding gardens which are covered with lush green forests.

The place is simply to get rich by car which will take approx 2 hours and 50 minutes journey via Araku. On this journey, you will see many small shacks selling coconut water, roasted corn, pure organic honey, and other food as well.

Once you will reach this mind-blowing place, you will feel wow for sure. This Instagrammable picturesque waterfall is above 50 feet high and the most important thing is that the name comes from the tribal dance. It is one of the best tourist places near Vizag within 200 km.

Google Review – Best waterfall near Araku valley. Personal cars are not allowed. U will have to take a Local Jeep which will take 1500Rs. It will drop u at the bottom from where u will have to trek for 100m to reach the waterfall. U should bring a change of clothes so that u can enjoy yourself to the fullest.

Caves

At 1st must say this is a place which has a marvelous creation of nature. The place has located 90 kilometers away from the city of Visakhapatnam and it is almost 750 meters above huge sea level. It is located in the Ananthagiri hills which are situated in the Araku Valley in the Visakhapatnam district.

The place has an outstanding landscape, green forest, and a birth-taking hill covered with lush green grass and wild fauna, which is to attract the people more. If you are in the city of Vizag, then you must visit this place to explore the enigma.

It is also the best option for those who love animals and wild birds. Between the cave, you will also be able to see the bats and golden geckos. This is one of the best views and picturesque locations which will thrill your day and is among the best places to visit in Araku Valley.

Google Review – Avoid if you are scared of depth or caves. Otherwise, enjoy the colorful cave and the dripping water(be careful, due to the dripping water, sometimes the stairs are wet and slippery). Anyways it’s beautiful and the river beside is a beautiful view as well. You can find many roadside crafts vendors, maybe you can consider a little souvenir. Enjoy your trip.

zoo park

If you are looking for the best tourist places in Vizag, think of Indira Gandhi Zoological Park. It acts as a home for approximately eighty different species of animals spread over an area of 625 acres full of lush greenery. The place is situated only 5 kilometers away from the Kailasagiri.

Indira Gandhi Zoological Park is set amidst the Eastern Ghats and is a part of the Kambalakonda Forest Reserve. The facility also facilitates visitors with informative displays about the flora and fauna that can be found there. Besides this, it has an open-air theatre that also frequently hosts classical music concerts by eminent artists from across the globe.

If you love to explore this park, then you must take a camera with you. Because while you are visiting you will see many animals like panthers, Lions tigers, and others, so you can click some pictures which will stay forever in your memory. This is one of the best places to visit in Vizag for 3 days.

Google Review – A good day trip with family and kids. Well shaded with plenty of places to enjoy and sit. A slightly longer walk to cover the entire zoo and some enclosures are presently under maintenance. Clean and well-kept with attentive staff.

When we talk about the best places to visit in Vizag, then we should not ignore Rushikonda beach. It is one of the most scenic and popular beaches in Visakhapatnam, which has clean waters and golden coral sands. It is also well-known as the Venice of Andhra Pradesh.

The beach is located in Vizag city near Rushikonda village. People are used to saying that the place is a house of colorful birds and various types of snakes. So be aware of that. The place has also a small temple, known as Veera Venkateswara Swamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Villagers believe the gods decided that whoever visits this temple will attain salvation. There’s a waterfall as well, which flows into a tiny lake called ‘Shiva’. This beach attracts people from across the world for unwinding at this beautiful place. This is one of the best places to visit in Vizag for couples.

Google Review – One of the most beautiful beaches in Vizag I have ever been to so far. Lots of colors of water can be experienced during the day and at sunset. The curved beach with waves is fun to experience. The beach gets close by 6 pm.

Kailsahgiri

This is an amazing tourist destination near Visakhapatnam, which has gained popularity for its breathtaking views of hills and beaches. Kailasagiri Park is famous for its 360-degree view of Beaches and Hill stations, which are very close to it. This park is specially designed for tourists, so you can take the best pictures during your vacation in Vizag.

Just go to the top of the hill and witness the beauty of beaches and sunrise/sunset with family or friends. If you are going to visit Top Station, then you must stay here till night because there is no food available here at night. So plan your trip carefully, before going there with family or friends.

Google Review – One of the famous places in Vizag city. The beauty of the place is the viewpoints that give a bird’s eye view feel of both the city and the Bay of Bengal. Children can enjoy the park and the pleasant atmosphere. The right time to visit this place is 3 pm to 4 pm and you can spend 2 to 3 hours here. Thus you can have both a day view and a night view of the city.

submarine

The submarine museum is located in Visakhapatnam, RK beach in the south-eastern state of India. The museum has a collection of preserved boats, vintage equipment, and other artifacts. It is one of the best places in Vizag for couples, family & friends to visit.

It provides views of World War II along with modern naval warfare, besides showcasing Indian submarine models and exhibits relating to hydrography, marine biology, and oceanography. Other nearby tourist places include Andhra University Museum, Bheemili Beach, and Odiyan Rock Cut Caves. This is one of the top places to visit in Vizag at night.

Google Review – Loved the experience here. The submarine is a piece of art. An almost two thousand-ton submarine parked ashore allows one to walk through it and see the internal workings of a submarine, tiny rooms where they had to manage to do their daily activities. The place is open from 2-8 pm. It has a bathroom facility as well.

Once you are there, spend some time at its most popular landmark, Dolphin’s Nose Lighthouse. The lighthouse is one of a kind and was built in 1892. This icon of Visakhapatnam offers an unforgettable experience as it overlooks Port Visakhapatnam’s coastline, providing a beautiful view of sea activities at night.

It is also very famous among photographers because of its lighthouse characteristics and architecture that shines brightly during sunrise and sunset times. Visitors can get close to lighthouses by walking up some steps through a hillock.

A mini zoo is also located nearby for those who wish to have a family outing with kids; look forward to seeing deer, owls, foxes, and guinea pigs here. It is one of the famous tourist places near Vizag within 200 Kms.

Google Review – A Awesome place to visit in Vizag, It’s under the control of the Indian Navy, and for the normal public we have to choose Yarada road, Just maps the location to Yarada and the once-inclined road starts map for the lighthouse. The opening time is from 3 Pm to 5 Pm and remember to carry ID proof.

It is believed that the temple was constructed by the Vishnukundins, rulers of a kingdom that ruled parts of eastern Telangana , northern Andhra Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh from the 6th to 8th centuries. The idol here is a 10 feet long Varaha Narasimha icon, which shows Lord Vishnu’s incarnation of Narasimha in a seated posture.

An idol of Bhumidevi or Earth Goddess is also present here; she is said to be the deity who brought Varaha to earth. Apart from Hinduism, Jainism, and Buddhism have played important roles in shaping and making Simhachalam a place of spiritual prominence.

Google Review – The fragrance of camphor enchants the entire temple complex. I found the prasad here to be like nectar. All arrangements have been made for the convenience of the visitors. Words are falling short to praise this place. Please do visit this temple on coming to Vishakapatnam.

The VUDA Park was developed and maintained by Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority, popularly known as VUDA. It is located in an area of 200 acres near RK Beach of Visakhapatnam.

The park is open to the public from 5 atolls 10 pm and is popular among people in and around the city. The major attractions of the park are an amphitheater, a children’s park, a jogging track, a pushcart racing track, etc.

In addition to these facilities, VUDA Park also features musical fountains and photo opportunity spots that have a backdrop of the Bay of Bengal which attracts numerous tourists visiting beaches near Visakhapatnam.

Google Review -Well-maintained park in Vizag. The ocean view is available at the end of the park. Boating, a children’s play park is there to play and have fun.

Teenati park

The dominant feature of the park is an artificial hill with a statue of a golden-crowned sparrow on top. It is often called Maidan Mukku, as most of the city’s population can see it. There are also 3 more small hillocks covered in dense trees towards its edges.

These hills are placed to form the 4 sides of a rectangle, making Tenneti Park rectangular. The Park has been used as grounds for many cultural activities, including the ‘Vizag Souvenir’ which is organized by Visakhapatnam Urban Development Authority (VUDA).

There is also an annual flower show held here every year in January, which attracts immense crowds from across Andhra Pradesh and neighboring states like Telangana and Tamil Nadu as well. It is one of the famous hidden places in Vizag.

Google Review – A must-must attraction while in Vizag. One can enjoy sea waves and wrecked ship views on one side and a lush green garden on the other side. Entry is free in the garden. It’s a very neat, clean, tidy garden offering serenity, peacefulness, and calming views.

Located in the port city of Visakhapatnam , Visakha Museum is known for its amazing collection of artifacts and antiques. The museum was built by the state government of Andhra Pradesh and has a collection that spans over five centuries.

It is best visited on Tuesdays as it’s closed every Monday and Wednesday. The museum has an extensive collection of medieval antiquities belonging to the Pallava, Chola, Vijayanagara Empire, and Kakatiya periods.

Another highlight is the archaeological remains found during excavations at Amaravathi village near the museum campus, including relics like brick sculptures from the 2nd century BCE onwards; pottery shards from the 10th CE onwards; terracotta tablets from 2n to rd century CE, etc.

Google Review – Very Good museum shows historical landmarks of the Indian Navy, Airforce, and Army. Best spots in Vizag. Detailed maps about Indian Maritime War history on East Coast. Masterpiece photos of the India-Pakistan war, the Sinking of the Gazi Submarine by our Brave Soldiers, and many more.

Rose Hill Church is one of the most famous and must-visit places in Vishakhapatnam. The church is located port area on the hilltop, Vishakhapatnam, and it is a more than 100 years old church. you can reach this outstanding church via steps as well as paved roads.

This is also one of the best tourist places in Visakhapatnam. This is a worth visiting place in Vizag for families. Ross Hill Church offers amazing views of the sea and the city both at night as well as in daylight.

Visakhapatnam is such a beautiful city, with so much to offer. I’m dying to visit here after reading your blog. Thanks for sharing such a great collection of beautiful places to visit. I’m definitely saving it for later.

Such a great variety of things to do; from beaches to caves, taking in submarine museums and airplanes. The clean beach is a bonus too.

You make it sound so great! I would love to go to the waterfalls, the nature preserve and both museums. How convenient that the museums are right across the street from each other too!

I have been to a few submarine museums in the US, but they were all still in the water. This is the first time I see a submarine museum that is not submerged. Looks interesting and I wonder if it was painted silver in front originally?

Wow, it sounds like there’s so much to do in Visakhapatnam! I would definitely check out the museums (especially the submarine and coffee ones) and that waterfall is gorgeous!

Vizag looks like such a beautiful place. I especially love the wildlife sanctuary. Can’t wait to visit soon!

Oh wow..i would love to visit that sub..didn’t know such a thing existed!

Very well written blog, I never knew one can visit so many places in Vizag. I can see a kid will have loads of fun, visiting the submarine and aircraft museum. But the best part is Lambasingi, it looks too surreal and must-visit kinds. How much a 3 day trip will cost, with a decent staying option?

I have many friends in vizag but never got a chance to visit. Now you have given me a plenty of reasons to see the city. Museums look interesting especially the aircraft and coffee museum.

It has been decades I have visited Visakhapatnam, after reading your post I am sure what interests my family and choose accordingly.

Lol I have to admit, I was not expecting this to include a submarine! What a fun and unique museum!

I am so impressed with the variety of things to see in Visakhapatnam. The wildlife and nature is where I would want to spend most of my time, but those beaches and caves look fantastic too.

What an interesting place! I really like the submarine, and I think I would really enjoy visiting the Tribal Museum and learning about the cultures of the local tribes.

Went to Visakhapatnam from Hyderabad a couple of years back on my India visit. Loved Araku valley and the plantations. The submarine museum was unique. First time I ever entered into a submarine.

I love caves, waterfalls and wildlife, so would want to spend my time exploring that. My boys would love the aircraft and submarine museums. It sounds like we should visit the culture center if we come to the area as well to learn about the native people.

Your photo of Rushikonda Beach is amazing! I never thought of India as a beach destination, for me it’s more about the culture, the food and the temples… But to know that this is one of the cleanest beaches in India is very enticing!

Thanks for all your recommendations, this is a great resource!

Visakhapatnam certainly seems to have everything. I love beautiful beaches, but am more interested in the museums (especially the coffee museum!) and the caves. I would really like to visit this area. It looks beautiful but with so many interesting places to check out, it seems ideal for family visit.

We were sorry we did not get to visit the great beach areas in India when we visited. We certainly would head to Rushikonda Beach. As an ex-Navy guy, hubby would not miss the Naval Submarine or Aircraft Museums. I would bargain for a day trip to Katiki Falls or the Borra Caves in exchange for those museum days!

The Bora caves are SO BEAUTIFUL they remind me of Ruby Falls in Tennessee. Lambasing is quite eerie in a hauntingly beautiful way. This sounds like a great place to visit.

Beaches, wildlife and waterfalls, this place ticks plenty of must haves on my list. I can’t wait to visit.

All you need to know to plan the perfect tour of Vizag

All you need to know to plan the perfect tour of Vizag

Most tourists come to Vizag only for a limited amount of time. Maybe 2 to 4 days or an entire week. But even that might not be enough to cover the beauty of this magnificent city completely. When you plan your trip to Vizag, you have some places in mind which you want to visit. Most of these places are popular tourist attractions. But when you arrive in the city, it can get difficult to check all the places. That’s why it is important to plan out your ideal Vizag tour.

The best thing about Vizag is that the city has relatively less traffic, which makes it easy for tourists to go from one place to another. If you’re lucky, and you arrive in Vizag when the weather is cloudy, your tour of Vizag becomes easier. If not, you can always escape to Araku Valley or visit some other places.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself and figure out the places you should visit on your Vizag tour:

#1 Beach person or Mountain person?

All you need to know to plan the perfect tour of Vizag

Most people have a clear preference in this regard and they accordingly choose the city they want to visit. But Vizag uniquely offers both avenues. If you’re a mountain person, there’s Araku Valley for you to explore. For beach lovers, there are plenty of beaches in Vizag, the popular ones being RK Beach and Rushikonda Beach.

And for the few outliers who like both beaches and mountains, there’s always Kailasagiri, from where tourists get an excellent view of the Vizag coast.

#2 Nature lover or History geek?

All you need to know to plan the perfect tour of Vizag

For nature lovers, Vizag can be a very delightful place. The city has a perfect blend of mountains and sea. Apart from that, there is also the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park where a wide range of animal and bird species are housed. Right beside it lies the Kambalakonda wildlife sanctuary which houses a beautiful lake, enveloped with thick forests. With a bit of travel, bird enthusiasts can visit Kondakarla Ava Bird Sanctuary.

But Vizag is richly dipped in history too. With the Eastern Naval Command (ENC), headquartered in the city, naturally, the city has a strong navy presence. This is showcased in the INS Kursura Submarine Museum – one of the highlight tourist attractions of Vizag – and the many lighthouses scattered over the city. Not so long ago, the TU-142 Aircraft Museum was also opened to the public. If you venture a little further, there are remnants of Dutch architecture at Bheemili and ancient Buddhist sites at Bojjannakonda and Thotlakonda.

#3 Shopping or food

vizag tour blog

Vizag has its own flavour and yet, it has all the flavours too. From North-Indian to Continental to Chinese, you can find all cuisines of food here. Obviously, with Vizag being a coastal city, a lot of people here indulge in seafood. Biryani is loved more than anything else in this city. Though, the BBQ trend has captured the city’s restaurants of late.

But there are a few dishes that separate Vizag from everywhere else – Muri Mixture, Madugula Halwa, Punugulu, Tomato Bajji, Bamboo Chicken, etc.

Surely, if you’re coming to Vizag, you’d surely buy something as well. From Etikoppaka toys to Ponduru Khadi, you can take a piece of Vizag with you. You can also buy some souvenirs from one of the shops at RK Beach. If you happen to visit Araku Valley, you can buy some strawberries or chocolates. The tribal markets at Araku, or shandies as they are called, are also not to be missed. But you know what Araku is famous for? Coffee!

Either way, plan it right and your tour of Vizag can be the most memorable trip of your life.

Disclaimer: Kindly follow Covid-19 norms while on your Vizag tour to keep yourself and the others safe.

8. Simhachalam Temple

View Of Simhachalam Temple

Being the only temple where Shri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy is worshipped, this place attracts a lot of tourists and devotees. This place is also one of the very few remaining places in India where the Vaishnavite culture is strictly followed. The Simhachalam temple has a strict prayer routine that remains undisturbed by the influx of tourists.

The temple itself is extremely beautiful – there are intricate stone carvings and designs. The details can be observed from a distance. Throughout the year the deity remains covered in sandalwood paste. It comes to its real form for just 12 hours per year on Akshaya Tritiya. Here one can see Lord Vishnu in the Tribhanga posture where he possesses two hands with the head of a lion on a human torso.

Automatic Refunds and No More Hidden Fees: D.O.T. Sets New Rules for Airlines

The Transportation Department issued new requirements on refunds when flights are canceled or delayed and on revealing “junk” fees before booking. Here’s what passengers can expect.

A blue airport screen showing extensive cancellations and delays is shown in close up with a man standing in front of it.

By Christine Chung

The Transportation Department on Wednesday announced new rules taking aim at two of the most difficult and annoying issues in air travel: obtaining refunds and encountering surprise fees late in the booking process.

“Passengers deserve to know upfront what costs they are facing and should get their money back when an airline owes them — without having to ask,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a statement, adding that the changes would not only save passengers “time and money,” but also prevent headaches.

The department’s new rules, Mr. Buttigieg said, will hold airlines to clear and consistent standards when they cancel, delay or substantially change flights, and require automatic refunds to be issued within weeks. They will also require them to reveal all fees before a ticket is purchased.

Airlines for America , a trade group representing the country’s largest air carriers, said in a statement that its airlines “abide by and frequently exceed” D.O.T. consumer protection regulations.

Passenger advocates welcomed the new steps.

Tomasz Pawliszyn, the chief executive of AirHelp, a Berlin-based company that assists passengers with airline claims, called it a “massive step forward and huge improvement in consumer rights and protection” that brings the United States closer to global standards in passenger rights.

Here’s what we know about the D.O.T.’s new rules, which will begin to go into effect in October.

There’s now one definition for a “significant” delay.

Until now, airlines have been allowed to set their own definition for a “significant” delay and compensation has varied by carrier . Now, according to the D.O.T., there will be one standard: when departure or arrival is delayed by three hours for domestic flights and six hours for international flights.

Passengers will get prompt refunds for cancellations or significant changes for flights and delayed bags, for any reason.

When things go wrong, getting compensation from an airline has often required establishing a cumbersome paper trail or spending untold hours on the phone. Under the new rules, refunds will be automatic, without passengers having to request them. Refunds will be made in full, excepting the value of any transportation already used. Airlines and ticket agents must provide refunds in the original form of payment, whether by cash, credit card or airline miles. Refunds are due within seven days for credit card purchases and within 20 days for other payments.

Passengers with other flight disruptions, such as being downgraded to a lower service class, are also entitled to refunds.

The list of significant changes for which passengers can get their money back also includes: departure or arrival from an airport different from the one booked; connections at different airports or flights on planes that are less accessible to a person with a disability; an increase in the number of scheduled connections. Also, passengers who pay for services like Wi-Fi or seat selection that are then unavailable will be refunded any fees.

Airlines must give travel vouchers or credits to ticketed passengers unable to fly because of government restrictions or a doctor’s orders.

The vouchers or credits will be transferable and can be used for at least five years after the date they were issued.

Fees for checked baggage and modifying a reservation must be disclosed upfront.

Airlines and ticket agents are now required to display any extra fees for things like checking bags or seat selection clearly and individually before a ticket purchase. They will also need to outline the airline’s policies on baggage, cancellations and changing flights before a customer purchases a ticket.

The rules, which apply to all flights on domestic airlines and flights to and from the United States operated by foreign airlines, have varying start dates.

For example, automatic refunds must be instituted by the airlines within six months. But carriers have a year before they’re required to issue travel vouchers and credits for passengers advised by a medical professional not to fly.

Time required : 10 mins. Cost : Free. Timings : Open 24/7. Sixth location - RK Beach. RK Beach also known as Ramakrishna Beach is situated on the east coast of the Bay of Bengal in Vizag. RK Beach gets its name from the Ramakrishna Mission ashram situated near the beach. Beach is beautiful but gets overcrowded in the evening.

  2. Comprehensive Visakhapatnam (Vizag) Tour Guide

I would prefer to stay near/at RK Beach which ensures local sightseeing by walk and you can relax even on sea beaches.
