if you're looking to register your kid, in VSA rec program I would think twice I was a coach in my team and kids did not enjoy there experience playing for VSA as well as the rec program Board of Director, Chad Mateer was very rude lied about several incidents and overall made this experience, stressful and unwelcoming look for a different soccer program to register your kid for.
Both my sons started playing with VSA when they were 3 years old. My older son switched sports but my younger boy who is now 17 is still going strong! We've played with 3 of the local clubs and by far VSA is the BEST! They provide the education, structure and support that has helped my son blossom to the player that he is today. And I am proud to announce that because of VSA he will be playing at CNU in the Fall.
This is my boy when we played in Kansas City for a national title
Both of my kids play for VSA, one in the travel program. From the first tryout through the end of the season, I got nothing but a sense of being ripped off. First, during tryouts, they pack as many players on the fields as possible and charge you for a tryout where it does not appear to be a test of skill or how you would envision a tryout being. The kids just scrimmage the entire time while the coaches stand around talking. I saw very little evaluation being conducted. Second, they have so many "travel" teams, it's hard to understand what makes a travel team vs. in-house. There's no sense of accomplishment making the travel team. To me, it seems that all kids from "tryouts" make travel just to foot the bill. Would you rather 500 kids paying $105 or 500 at $1,400! Third, because of the mass amount of teams in the travel program, they have to find time for all of them to practice...what's worse, is most of them only get a quarter of the field to practice on. It's pretty hard to learn on-field situations on only a portion of the field....like, how to clear the ball from in front of your net, how to work the outside of the field, when and where NOT to pass. How are kids supposed to learn basic positioning when the field isn't big enough to teach the position!? The lack of practicing in-game fundamentals shows on the field and you can see a glaring difference, during games, in other programs to have better opportunities. It's hard to blame the coaches, as they can only teach with the space their given, because of the amount of kids on travel, they'll front-load the best players on one team, down to others who are clearly best suited for in-house. IMO, VSA travel needs to scale down their program. Provide a better, less zoo-like approach to tryouts, become more selective with players for this program, and truly teach the kids both fundamental of game play, and advanced skills to be successful.
This has got to be the worst club in the area. The coaching is, and has been, sub par for years. There are a few good coaches within the club, but very few. Any talent that was in the area has since moved on to other clubs except for a few teams that chose to stay together at this club. If you are looking for a good soccer club, seek another club. There are several clubs with a 1/2 hour drive of Haymarket where kids can get excellent coaching and strong teams that play in the most competitive leagues and tournaments.
Biggest mistake we ever made was coming to this club! The website says that they are all about player development when in reality it's all about the team. Our experience with certain Coaches showed that it was all ego, and favoritism. When we contacted the clubs administration for assistance, it was a lot of passing the buck of who will look into it and there was no resolution. We would go weeks without any correspondence. There idea of dealing with the problem, is sweeping it under the rug and hope we go away. This club and establishment is driven by $$. That's all they want. Once your check clears and you sign their contract you are screwed and you have no chance of getting reimbursed for their lack of following through...play time and player development are null in void. What a joke! Also, let's not forget that there are paid Coaches who have a place on the Board of Directors...how is that even legal? Conflict of Interest much?
