The Weeknd Performed These Decade-Old Hits On Tour & I’m Not OK
Are these performances a final goodbye to his ‘The Weeknd’ persona?
For nearly a year, The Weeknd has breathed life into his last two albums (2020’s After Hours and 2022’s Dawn FM ) on his After Hours Til Dawn tour. The stadium excursion exists in a post-apocalyptic pop universe, where The Weeknd serenades the audience with impressive stamina under a large moon. And now, for his current Europe/Latin America leg of shows, a massive Hajime Sorayama-designed robot . While the stage’s eerie design of tattered buildings and laser-beamed lights are stunning, the real highlight is the show’s ever-changing setlist. As videos from his latest shows appear on social media, many fans noticed The Weeknd’s been digging through his old archives.
So far, the singer — also known as Abel Tesfaye — has performed numerous hidden gems from his 2012 Trilogy album. This sonic choice isn’t too odd, as he has nods to his other eras in the setlist. However, it’s a rather surprising inclusion considering he rarely performs tracks from the decade-old album . This release, a compilation of his three 2011 mixtapes House of Balloons , Thursday , and Echoes of Silence, houses The Weeknd’s most heaviest and iconic records. Every track drips with a underground alt-R&B tempo that embraces his melodious hooks with ease, and this swell blend is what earned him the title as king of the fall.
He also surprise performed tunes from 2012’s Kiss Land , which shines in a similar legendary sheen to that of Trilogy . These song additions differs from his U.S. setlist, which only borrowed “The Morning,” the first half of “Kiss Land” and “House of Balloons.” Fans who attended the earlier shows noticed these additions, and wondered what inspired The Weeknd to perform such XO-coded treasures from his earlier releases. According to the singer, the answer’s simple: He wants to keep fans on their toes.
“Every night I’m changing up the set — I never do that, it’s usually very formulaic — so I’m spicing it up and going into deep, deep, deep cuts and older songs,” The Weeknd told Variety on June 20. “I’ll rehearse it the day-of, and if the band is down, we’ll just throw a mini-set in there.”
Meanwhile, others think there’s a deeper meaning to this. Many fans believe he’s performing these deeper cuts as a tribute to his ‘The Weeknd’ persona, who he’s been slowly retiring in favor of his government name. In May of this year, the singer-actor told W Magazine that he’s “ready to close the chapter” of his alter ego after he releases his forthcoming album, which is allegedly the final installment to his After Hours and Dawn FM universe.
His persona, which has musically built a legacy of intriguing hits, is one that listeners have grown attached to, and that can be seen in how awestruck fans are of him performing cuts from Trilogy . Twitter users such as Khaleesi ( @TheWeekndFm ) speculates he’s mourning his prolific stage name with tracks that’s made ‘The Weeknd’ a force, especially since this might be the last time he’ll perform as this character.
While I wallow in that heartbreaking thought, check out all the surprise older songs The Weeknd has performed on tour so far.
June 14 (Horsens, DK)
The Weeknd kicked off the nostalgia by performing his 2011 gem, “The Party & The After Party.” The track, which first appeared on his House of Balloons EP and later added to Trilogy, sits in a rare class of the singer’s longest songs— it’s nearly eight minutes long . While that might sound exhausting, its sonically rich and over-indulgent atmosphere pulls you in and oddly leaves you wanting more. Even when he spends the last four minutes of the track spiraling into a sultry fog, there’s something about his aching vocals that plagues your brain. It’s just Hall of Fame impressive.
View on TikTok
The Weeknd continued his House of Balloons streak by performing the EP’s title track, which also has a midway switch titled “Glass Table Girls.” The gritty number personally sits in the top five greatest releases in his discography, so to hear his mature vocals riding against this classic beat warms my heart.
Honorable mention : The Weeknd also performed his 2021 duet with Swedish House Mafia “Moth To A Flame.” While this release is recent, it’s seldom the track gets live treatment, so this moment is legendary. Even mother nature’s smallest and annoying creatures couldn’t believe he was singing this, as seen in the TikTok below.
June 17 (Stockholm, SE)
On the tour’s third date, The Weeknd proved that Kiss Land is an upper echelon of an album by performing “Tears In The Rain.”
Later that night, The Weeknd dug into his Echoes of Silence bag and performed “Montreal.” The uptempo French track is a hidden gem on the 2011 EP, which sonically hears the singer swimming in forlorn heartbreak and toxic sex. You know, his signature beauty and madness.
June 20 (Oslo, NO)
In Norway, The Weeknd performed “Coming Down,” another infectious deep cut from House of Balloons.
June 24 (Amsterdam, NL)
As someone who attended the U.S. leg of the tour and only heard “The Morning” and the first half of “Kiss Land” live (which is still legendary), this one hurts my heart . On June 24, The Weeknd performed his biggest XO-gem “High For This.”
July 7 (London, UK)
For many XO stans, this is the banger that started it all. During The Weeknd’s stop in London, he performed “Wicked Games.”
July 11 (Brussels, BE)
This performance is the true definition of a deep cut. During The Weeknd’s time in Belgium, he surprise sung his Echoes Of Silence track “D.D.” This number is a cover of Michael Jackson’s illustrious hit “Dirty Diana,” so to hear him revive his rendition speaks to how much he’s been observing his older work.
The throwback continues. That same night, he performed “Tell Your Friends” from his 2015 album Beauty Behind The Madness. This moment surprised fans, as The Weeknd has only showed love to this era by performing his three massive singles from the record: “The Hills,” “Often,” and “Can’t Feel My Face.” The last time he performed “Tell Your Friends” — a Soul Dog-sampled groove about his self-destructive relationship with fame — was on his 2015 The Madness Fall tour.

Last year, the Weeknd postponed his tour for the third time due to the pandemic . When explaining his reasons for doing so, the Weeknd promised the new version of the tour would be “something bigger and special for you which requires stadiums.”
After announcing the end of his After Hours era with “ Take My Breath ” last summer, the Weeknd revealed Dawn FM just a few days before its arrival last month. Swedish House Mafia remixed “ Sacrifice ” for an “Alternate World” edition of the project, which also included the joint track “ Moth to a Flame ” and Agents of Time’s remix of “Take My Breath.”
The Weeknd has been a busy collaborator in recent months, as well, appearing on new tracks with FKA twigs , Post Malone , and Rosalía , plus a posthumous release from Aaliyah . He unveiled his new immersive television special, The Weeknd x The Dawn FM Experience , through Prime Video in February

This review might not be completely objective as Abel has been my favourite singer for a few years now. However, I can definitely admit the Starboy tour date in Paris was the best pop concert I've been to this year. Even though some songs could have been put out of the tracklist, he mostly sang his catchiest songs of his career, no matter the era. He has great, or should I say, tremendous energy as he continuously sang twenty-something songs with no pause in between. He has no trouble reaching high notes live, his voice sounding even more heavenly in real life. That night, he invited Travis Scott on stage who pumped up the crowd more than him, which is a shame and showcases very well his lack of success and recognition in France, yet, in a sold out stadium. Most people actually didn't even know his real name or the lyrics of his songs ! I would recommend any "real fan" who has known him for a while or who likes his last album a lot to go to a Starboy tour date. I promise you, you won't regret it.
The concert was absolutely stunning. A starship was used and the lights were coordinated very well. Abel sang amazingly in person and I loved jumping up and down screaming with other members of the audience while he sang. The concert was truly magical and I enjoyed every second Abel stood on stage.
As for the other singers who appeared on stage, I was very satisfied with their singing as well. They did an amazing job and captured the entire audience. In between Abel's music, the other singers such as Lil Uzi and 6lack played their hits on stage and the whole crowd became even more alive. If I the concert played out any other way, I'm sure I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as this concert.

As Drake profoundly prophesized, “Nothing was the same, dawg.”
The Weeknd has dissed Drake on “All To Myself,” track no. 8 on Future and Metro Boomin ‘s We Still Don’t Trust You . The track samples The Isley Brother’s “Let’s Lay Together.”
Weeknd and Future sing through their issues on the pseudo-slow jam, with Tesfaye using the latter half of his verse to attack his former friend. He also seemingly sends shots at Drizzy’s OVO associate , Baka Not Nice , for making TikToks when he’s supposed to be Drake’s “shooter.” The crux of Weeknd’s verse is founded upon avoiding falling prey to signing his discography and “life” away to Drake early in his career.
Timeline of Drake & The Weeknd’s “Friendship”
Quavo fires back at chris brown with new single "tender".
“As far as on paper, it’s all being worked out, but that’s not really what counts anyway,” he told MTV at the time. “What counts to me is the fact that the affiliation is so known, and that’s all I really care about…I want to continue being involved in his career and vice versa and keep making music together, because you take songs like ‘Crew Love’ and ‘The Zone,’ that’s what people wait all night to hear.”
Drizzy reacted to the news that Abel decided to sign with Atlantic Records in 2012. He took to X/Twitter with a cryptic message that fans have long since speculated was a dig at The Weeknd. “You won’t get away with just a thank you…you owe me a favor,” he typed.
"Bring your love baby I could bring my shame." – The Weeknd http://bit.ly/dLGnts — Drizzy (@Drake) March 7, 2011
But the two quickly made amends and jumped back into the studio in 2013. The Weeknd began his rollout for Kiss Land that summer, and who does he call for a guest verse? That’s right, Drake. Drizzy appears on The Weeknd’s single, “Live For.” Aubrey would also invite and take the Dawn FM singer with him on the European leg of his Would You Like a Tour.

“I gave up almost half of my album. It’s hard,” Weeknd said at the time. “I will always be thankful—if it wasn’t for the light he shined on me, who knows where I’d be. And everything happens for a reason. You never know what I would say if this success wasn’t in front of me now.”
Two years later, the pair would make peace again, as Drake and The Weeknd hit the stage for a performance of “Crew Love” during Abel’s Starboy tour. The live show marked the first time that the men performed the song since the Take Care era. The move prompted speculation that the men were back in the studio together, and fans were excited for a potential Take Care -esque moment. Drizzy would then tease an OVO and XO collaboration project after bringing out Tesfaye at the 2017 OVO Festival in August.
“I want you to understand what this is,” Drake said to the The Weeknd. “First of all, I don’t want to do this to you on stage, but I feel like that OVOXO project has to happen at some point. I just want to say that.”
Things began to crumble yet again in October 2017. Rumors began to swirl regarding Drake and The Weeknd’s ex-flame, Bella Hadid. It was speculated that Drizzy was dating Hadid after throwing her an extravagant birthday party.
In November 2017, Drake finally addressed The Weeknd’s comments regarding Take Care. According to HypeBeast , Drizzy responded to a troll insisting that The Weeknd created most of his sophomore album. Aubrey set the record straight on the matter, saying that Abel only participated in writing four of the album’s twenty songs.
Finally, The Weeknd would bring the problems to the booth in 2019. Appearing on Gesaffelstein song “Lost in the Fire,” The After Hours singer issued a shot at Drake. He referenced Pusha T ‘s “Story of Adidon,” which accused Drizzy of hiding his son, Adonis. “And I just want a baby with the right one/’Cause I would never be the one to hide one.”
Drizzy would later claim that the two were on good terms in the 2019 song, “WAR.” He confirmed that they did have issues, but have since made peace. Again.
“And the boy that sound like he sang on Thriller /You know that’s been my ni**a/Yeah, we just had to fix things/Family, 6 tings, we can’t split up,” the For All The Dogs artist spit.
But that peace treaty didn’t seem to hold up. “Started from the bottom, now we here” for real.

The Weeknd Appears to Shade Drake and OVO on “All to Myself”: 'Thank God I Never Signed My Life Away'
The Weeknd has joined the list of artists taking shots at Drake with the arrival of Future and Metro Boomin's new collaborative album, We Still Don't Trust You .
The Weeknd is featured on several tracks on the project, which is Future and Metro Boomin's second full-length in less than a month. On the song "All to Myself," he appears to reference his past association with Drake with a subliminal diss. "They could never diss my brothers, baby," he sings on the song. "When they got leaks in they operation/I thank God that I never signed my life away."
Drake and The Weeknd have a long, complicated relationship . The two have been associated for over a decade at this point. Drake was one of the first major artists to give The Weeknd a co-sign, and he appeared on his third mixtape, Thursday . In 2012, Drizzy indicated that he was working to sign the singer-songwriter to OVO Sound, but he ultimately signed with Republic.
There were rumors of a rift between the two for years, but they made it clear there was no bad blood by recording more music together and even going on tour. In recent years, they've drifted apart somewhat, so it's not exactly surprising to see The Weeknd join the growing chorus of artists taking shots at Drake.
Social media has a lot to say about the latest development, which suggests that Drake has lost out on lots of friends in the industry in the wake of We Don't Trust You and its sequel. To make matters worse, The Weeknd isn't the only artist with a potential diss against Drake on the project, with ASAP Rocky seemingly taking aim at him on "Show of Hands."
Future and Metro Boomin have sparked speculation there's a rift between them and Drake with both of their collaborative projects, which seem to include several subliminal shots at their former collaborator and friend. But the real drama arrived when Kendrick Lamar directly targeted Drake, and to a lesser extent J. Cole , on the We Don't Trust You cut "Like That," which now sits atop the Hot 100 .
Cole responded to K.Dot's verse but ultimately decided to apologize. And to make matters more complicated, J. Cole made a surprise appearance on We Still Don't Trust You with "Red Leather." Cole has either switched sides in the hip-hop civil war, or he's playing both sides so he always comes out on top. Meanwhile, Rick Ross has also hinted that he's joining up against Drake, too.

Future and Metro Boomin's We Still Don't Trust You Features A$AP Rocky, The Weeknd, and New Jabs At Drake
By Frazier Tharpe
Just when we all thought Future and Metro Boomin had played their ace, revealed their jokers, and dropped their Draw 4, they've gone and tossed a major Wild Card, one that doubles down on their early 2024 reign, somehow manages to bolster their already-cemented legends—and yes, extends and complicates the Drake vs the Universe beef even more.
We should have seen this coming when Metro revealed this second album’s title, We Still Don’t Trust You. Originally when he and Future first announced their plan to drop two projects just weeks apart, fans assumed they would be serving up a redux of one of Future’s biggest career flexes—that moment in winter 2017 when he dropped a self-titled album, boasting some of his biggest rap hits to date, and then seven days later dropped HNDRXX , another, arguably better (not arguable, to be honest—it's factually better) full-length album that fully indulged in his R&B skillset.
But, in a post- “Like That” world, the second album title made that concept seem like less of a lock. That Still seemed a little too aggressive for an R&B album, and Metro captioning his title-announcement post “job’s not finished” suggested he and Future were more interested in spinning the block on Drake again. The joke, naturally, is on us, for not assuming that if any duo would be capable of pulling off both, it’s these two. Still is indeed the spiritual sequel to HNDRXX fans (read: I) have been pleading for since ‘17, and it reminds us that subliminals still hit when they’re crooned.
But these two know what they started, and they know there’s bloodlust in the air—so in yet another swerve, Future and Metro's R&B album includes a surprise package of six new rap songs, on which even more direct shots are fired.
Before we get to that though, it must be said: much like HNDRXX stood taller than FUTURE , when the dust settles, We Still Don’t might— might —clear its admittedly very excellent rap predecessor. Boyz II Men interpolations, Ginuwine flips, a Brownstone sample, like a half dozen Weeknd features with his voice in full angelic ethereal mode—Future’s vocal performance and Metro’s production have somehow shifted into an even higher gear. From subverting expectations with a frisky little Miami Vice -type groove to start, the project just sounds great top to bottom with nary a skip. If you're keeping score, that makes essentially 35 heaters, give or take, that this dynamic duo has given us in the past three weeks alone, not counting the new album's bonus rap songs. It's still early in the year, but it’s going to be a tall order for any mainstream rap projects in the pipeline to outdo these two.
Future and Metro Boomin’s excellent new album opens a new chapter in rap geopolitics, as one “Big Three” titan uses his guest verse to finally diss another.
Now, to the drama. The lion’s share of the rap community is more focused on Drake and Kendrick, but if even half of the narratives swirling around Future and Drake are true, then there’s real disdain here. So, something as innocuous as say, We Still Don’t Trust You track five, “This Sunday,” interpolating Drake’s classic Views album cut “Feel No Ways” comes off here as calculated and petty, especially considering it has led the masses to realize that “Sunday” existed first —Drake was actually the one doing the interpolating, which is why his 2016 track lowkey always had a Future credit. Is this Future just liberating a long-sought-after loosie, much like the first album’s “Ice Attack,” or this one's “Red Leather,” which we'll get to in a minute? Or is he also sneakily reminding everyone that while Drake’s given him a lot of hits, their influence on each other has always gone both ways?
If you want more direct darts, look no further than the aforementioned guest appearances from The Weeknd. When Abel made a cameo on We Don’t Trust You , some fans joked that even his tangential involvement was an implicit co-sign of the album’s subliminal mission statement to line Drake up. But on “All to Myself,” a Still Don’t Trust You standout, he makes the subtext plain, singing “They could never diss my brothers, baby/When they got leaks in they operation/I thank God that I never signed my life away/And we never do the big talk/They shooters makin TikToks/Got us laughin in the Lambo.” The nuances of Abel and Drake’s complicated relationship are beyond the scope of this article, but the short version is that there have been frienemy, hot-and-cold vibes between them since the Weeknd declined to sign to Drake’s OVO label, even after Drake’s 2011 Take Care album broke him on a mainstream level. Since then, there have been video cameos , concert guest appearances , shoutouts on wax , and links in Vegas —but dig deep enough, and you'll find frostier comments and subliminal jabs to match. And as for shooters making Tiktoks, there is one such highly touted member in Drake’s crew who just made a decidedly non-threatening social media post not too long ago.
For the most part, though, We Still Don’t Trust You finds Future in his HNDRXX bag, crooning about love (or lack thereof) and other drugs. There’s little room for dissing. Which is why it sure as hell seems like Volume 2’s rap songs were a late addition that he and Metro attached to continue stoking the fire their first album started. There are a few telltale signs: first, the Charlamagne clip that kicks off the rap-pack section of the album—where he says the Big 3 should really be a Fantastic 4 that includes Future, who he argues is number one—is extremely recent , like, days ago. And track six, “Show of Hands,” boasts a surprise feature from none other than A$AP Rocky, who gleefully kicks his verse off by chiding Metro and Pluto for not including him “on the first one.” Which sure as hell reads like he would’ve dropped everything to be a part of the “Fuck Drake” movement the first go-round if they’d tipped him off.

By Jake Kring-Schreifels
Rocky, much like Kendrick, was embraced by an already-ascendant Drake in the early days of his career. Who can forget the frat rap posse cut “Fuckin Problems,” on which all three rappers trade jiggy bars over a co-produced Drake beat? And Drake won’t let us forget that he tapped both of them as openers on his Club Paradise tour around the same time. They haven’t collaborated on wax much since, but have indicated closeness through shoutouts and the occasional public appearance. Drake even once gifted Rocky a chain bearing the visage of the late great A$AP Yams.
That all changed when Rocky got together with Rihanna, whose on-and-off history with Drake spans something like 2009 to 2016. When Rocky confirmed the relationship, and its seriousness, to this magazine back in 2021 , it didn’t take long for the internet to flood the zone with memes about Drake—who himself once joked about his ideal picture-perfect life including “a family with Rihanna”— being heartbroken. But Drake seemed unbothered—until his last album, where he made a show of declaring a little too strongly how much the Rocky/Rihanna union didn't bother him.
Conspiracy theorists can make a case for 2021’s “Fucking Fans” being all about the dissolution of his relationship with Rih, but there’s no room for debate on the For All the Dogs album cut “Fear of Heights,” where he goes out of his way to tell us he’s referencing Rihanna, before insisting that he’s “had way badder” women and sneering that “that man” is “stuck with you, he can’t leave.” There are other little allusions to both Rocky and Rihanna across Dogs ' track list. On that album’s deluxe opener “Red Button,” a big One Size Fits All subliminal about taking it there with his opps if they dare him to, he raps “Word to M-Dolla, she the only one could maybe save it/Should've hit you first, but, sis, you know about the shit I've taken,” referencing Rihanna’s best friend Melissa Forde by her nickname. And on his most recent tour , Drake made a show of playing his Rihanna collab “Work,” just so he could announce that he won’t perform it anymore.
After only two days, Cole is walking back his “7 Minute Drill” diss track after using his Dreamville Fest performance to apologize to Kendrick and declare that he's done with this beef.
So whereas Kendrick, Future and the other artists seemingly turning up on Drake may seem a little random, Rocky joining the fray should be the least surprising. His verse is hardly as thunderous as Kendrick’s, but he’s basically gesturing to Drake’s metaphorical red button and volunteering to press it himself, especially with lines like “Niggas in they feelings over women, what, you hurt or somethin?/I smash before you birthed, son, Flacko hit it first, son.” That last line is likely alluding to relations Rocky may have had with Sophie , the woman with whom Drake shares a child. (Whereas Kendrick attacked Drake's skill and bonafides, Rocky seems to be going full “Super Ugly” with it.) This is about as specific as Rocky gets—“Your last shit came and went” is pretty boilerplate, as disses go—but given that he ends the track saying “Fuck keepin' this shit hip-hop/I wanna see a fuck nigga bleed out,” he sounds like he’s less interested in lyrical sparring.
Despite that kiss-off line, there could be more in the chamber from Rocky as well; he told GQ in late 2022 that he and Metro had been spending so much time together in the studio that his next album should “just be called Flacko Boomin .” Metro, it would seem, is the conductor marshaling most of these Drake attacks, essentially assembling a who’s-who crew to pop shit over his baleful and routinely excellent beats like the rap game Sinister Six.
One person we can mark safe from all of this is J. Cole, who just days after his 48-hour about-face apology to Kendrick , turns up here, making a refreshingly new bemusing decision. Cole appears on the Volume 1 closer “Red Leather” with a verse that instantly ranks high in the competitive pantheon of Great J. Cole Guest Verses. Although some sites are eagerly reaching to paint certain bars as Cole's commentary on his own Kendrick apology, this verse was seemingly recorded well before any of this popped off. But given everything that's transpired since, the decision on his part to clear the verse—i.e., to let it appear on the sequel to the album dissing his one friend which inspired him to half-heartedly diss his other friend, only to draw the rap community’s ire by promptly bowing out of the competition—makes absolutely no sense. It sounds great, though!
Now more than ever, all eyes are on the sky, waiting for the Owl Signal to hit and signal a long-awaited Drake response record. Reports imply it’s imminent. But years from now, when the dust settles and this geopolitical skirmish fades from top of mind, what we’ll be left with is just two really great albums that stand all on their own.

What Songs Can You Expect Lana Del Rey To Perform At Coachella 2024?
Lana Del Rey is headlining Coachella this weekend, with many fans flocking to the California desert solely to see her perform. Considering she has released several albums since she last played the festival a decade ago in 2014, it raises questions about what her setlist will look like.
According to setlist.fm , Del Rey’s most recent show was the final date of her 2023 tour in Charleston, West Virginia. While there, she played a mix from her discography, with the most songs being pulled from Born To Die and her 2023 album, Did You Know That There’s A Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard .
During Del Rey’s first Coachella set, she only played 11 songs and there were no special guests. However, this time around, it will be longer and there are chances for her to bring out any collaborators like Jon Batiste, The Weeknd, ASAP Rocky, Tommy Genesis, Father John Misty, and more.
Continue scrolling to see Del Rey’s setlist from Charleston for an idea of what songs to expect.

On Tuesday, the music festival unveiled the official set times for Weekend One, which includes the surprise addition of Vampire Weekend to the lineup for Saturday.
The group, which dropped their album Only God Was Above Us on Friday, will perform on the Outdoor Theatre stage on Saturday at 5 p.m, marking the group’s return to the festival after more than a decade. The group has performed at Coachella in 2008, 2010, and 2013.
