Here’s how to take a local Catholic pilgrimage in the U.S.
By Katie Yoder
Washington, D.C. Newsroom, Oct 23, 2021 / 06:41 am
The most popular pilgrimages for Catholics range from the Holy Land to the Camino de Santiago. But, pilgrims should know, these faith-filled trips can also be as simple as walking to a local church.
“Choose a place to go, [it] can be as short as a block away,” Will Peterson, the founder of Modern Catholic Pilgrim, told EWTN News Nightly on Oct. 15. “I invite people to not make it too complicated.”
The mission of Peterson’s group is to deepen faith and build community in the U.S. through the longstanding Catholic tradition of making pilgrimages on foot. While many people think of traveling overseas for pilgrimages, they should also consider staying local, he said.
“There are places worthy of pilgrimage here,” he stressed. For Holy Week, he pointed to New Mexico as a pilgrimage destination.
“Chimayo is a great spiritual place in northern New Mexico where on Good Friday every year there's like 30,000 people who make walked pilgrimage,” he said.
Another, called Wisconsin Way, begins outside Green Bay at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help, the only approved Marian apparition site in the country. Founded in 2013 by a local priest, Fr. Andrew Kurz, the trip is approximately 137 miles.
Pilgrimages, as defined by the Catechism of the Catholic Church , are an important part of the Catholic faith and “evoke our earthly journey toward heaven and are traditionally very special occasions for renewal and prayer.”
Catholics can begin their pilgrimages as soon as today. For the month of October, leading up to the Solemnity of All Saints on Nov. 1, Modern Catholic Pilgrim encourages Catholics to walk with the saints by praying for the intercession of a local parish patron saint as they walk to the church named after him or her.
“Then the next time you're there for Mass on Sunday, it’s going to kind of change your experience because you’ve journeyed there as a holy space,” Peterson urged.
Peterson draws his inspiration from a trip to Rome eight years ago. That experience set him on fire spiritually, he said. Now, he hopes that his group will infuse an appreciation of pilgrimages in the U.S.
Making a pilgrimage on foot is a “very ancient tradition for Christians, but feels kind of contemporary and new [for the U.S.] because we don’t really have a culture of it,” he said. “So we’re excited to be part of that development of the culture.”

The Catholic Travel Guide
Catholic Shrines, Pilgrimage Sites & Places of Interest in the United States
Although the United States is a fairly young country compared to many others, it abounds with Catholic shrines and places of interest to Catholics. The history of the Catholic Church in the U.S.A. has not always been an easy one. Although many who settled here came for religious freedom, this did not always apply to Catholics. In fact, as immigrants from such countries as Ireland and Italy (with largely Catholic populations) came in the late 19th Century, anti-Catholicism arose in certain parts of the country, stoked on by such groups as the Ku Klux Klan and some Protestant pastors. Church-burnings and intimidation took place, and many newspaper cartoons portrayed Catholics as agents of the devil.
The Irish, for example, they were branded as shiftless drunkards and advertisements were known to include the words “ No Irish Need Apply “. The Italian, Czechs and Polish were also greeted with hostility.
Despite these obstacles, Catholicism grew in the country and today it accounts for roughly 25% of the population.
Almost every state has something to appeal to Catholic vacationers and pilgrims alike. If you are traveling and looking for a place to visit or attend Mass then check one of these out. In addition many of the shrines offer pilgrimages and retreats.

St. Andrew in Roanoke, Virginia should be on your list. I wonder why it isn’t
Dear John, Thank you for your suggestion….we were not aware of this parish and its rich history. We will add a page to our site.
Please add St. Mary Basilica in Natchez, Mississippi. It is a beautiful minor basilica and one of the oldest churches in the south.
Dear Rebecca,
Thank you for your suggestion, it is a beautiful Basilica. Unfortunately the Basilica is closed for renovation at the time. We will contact them to see how long that will be the case.
I believe that St Mary has now reopened.
Thanks for the comments…..Which St Mary’s?
Asheville NC has St Lawrence Basilica. Super beautiful place. You must add this site! Daily tours, Mass, Adoration.
Thanks so much for letting us know about this magnificent Basilica! We have added a page to our site that will offer more information.
Thank you for creating this list. It is a great tool to use while planning vacations!
Another shrine that you could add for South Dakota is the Fatima Family Shrine in Alexandria, SD. Also, there is a retreat center just outside of Irene, SD, called Broom Tree. It is a really neat place to visit, especially if you’re able to go at a time of year that you could walk around the grounds.
Thanks for telling us about this Shrine…we will add it to our website. And thanks for the compliments…we hope everyone will find it useful.
I didn’t see The Basilica of Our Lady of Fatima,in Younstown, NY nor St Anne’s Shrine in Fiskdale MA listed.
As far as the Fatima shrine is concerned it it is listed here , but their physical address is Lewiston, New York as shown on their own website.
We were not aware of the St.Anne Shrine….thanks for bringing it to our attention. We will get it listed as soon as possible.

This morning we attend the Papal Audience in St. Peter’s Square or at the Audience Hall. The Audience is celebrated each Wednesday by His Holiness, Pope Francis (pending the papal schedule). Next Trevi Fountain area for some free time and lunch (on own). This afternoon, visit the oldest of the four major Basilicas in Rome, the Archbasilica of St. John the Lateran, the cathedral church and seat of the Bishop of Rome. Cross the street to the very steps that lead up to the praetorium of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem which Jesus climbed on His way to trial during his Passion. Holy Mass will be celebrated by our priest at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, dedicated to Our Blessed Mother. This Basilica contains a relic from the manger of the infant Jesus. Dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Rome: St. Peter's Basilica - Vatican Museum - Appian Way - Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls - Catacombs
Today we tour St. Peter’s Basilica, built on the site where St. Peter the Apostle was martyred. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to view Michelangelo’s Pieta sculpture, pray at the tombs of Pope Benedict XVI and St. John Paul II. Next you will visit the Vatican Museum, where you can see the Tapestry Gallery, Raphael Rooms, and Sistine Chapel. After lunch, continue down the Appian Way, one of the earliest roads built in ancient Rome to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls and the Catacombs. Dinner and overnight in Rome.
Day 5: Rome – Pantheon – Colosseum – Roman Forum
This morning after breakfast we will celebrate Mass. Following Mass we will visit the Pantheon, an ancient Roman building, that is renowned for its large concrete dome. After lunch, visit the Colosseum, also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, was built in the first century AD and was the largest amphitheater in the Roman Empire. Christians were often persecuted in the Roman Empire, and many of them were martyred in the Colosseum. Some of the most famous Christian martyrs who died in the Colosseum include Saint Ignatius of Antioch, Saint Polycarp, and Saint Perpetua and Saint Felicitas. The Colosseum is a reminder of the persecution that early Christians faced, and it is also a symbol of their faith and courage. The Roman Forum was the heart of ancient Rome, and it was the site of many important government buildings, temples, and shops. It was also the place where public meetings were held and where the laws were debated and passed. The Roman Forum was a busy and bustling place. It was home to a wide variety of people, from wealthy aristocrats to poor laborers, and it was a place where people from all walks of life came together. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight.
Day 6: Rome – Orvieto – Bolsena - Assisi
We leave Rome and travel North through the Umbrian Hills to Orvieto. This incredible town sits on a volcanic high rock formation. Here we visit one of the most beautiful and most renowned Cathedrals in Italy. Because of its strategic location, it’s Christian history officially started in 1004, but, Orvieto was built over preexisting Etruscan era cave tunnels dating back 2,500 years, which some historians believe Christians used to celebrate Mass when Christianity was forbidden. Next we visit nearby town of Bolsena and Cathedral housing the corporeal of the Miracle of the Eucharist which took place in 1262. Here we celebrate Mass. Continue to Assisi he hometown of St. Francis and St. Clare. Upon arriving check-in to your hotel. Dinner and overnight. Retire to your room for a restful night’s sleep.
Day 7: Assisi – Bevagna – Assisi
After breakfast, travel to Bevagna, a charming town in the heart of Umbria. Bevagna is not only a treasure of historical and artistic gems, but also a place of profound religious significance. Its rich Catholic heritage is evident in its numerous churches, monasteries, and religious institutions, each bearing witness to the town’s deep-rooted faith and devotion. Visit the Church of San Francesco which is located in Bevagna’s historic center. The Church of San Francesco is a haven for Franciscan spirituality. It’s simple yet elegant architecture reflects the Franciscan Order’s values of humility and simplicity. Inside, the church houses a beautiful fresco depicting the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. Continue to the Monastery of San Silvestro, on a hilltop overlooking Bevagna. The Monastery of San Silvestro offers a tranquil retreat for those seeking spiritual solace. Founded in the 13th century, the monastery has been a center of religious life for centuries. Its serene atmosphere and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside provide an ideal setting for contemplation and prayer. After lunch visit the Sanctuary of Madonna delle Grazie. This is a beloved pilgrimage site for Catholics in the region. The sanctuary, dating back to the 15th century, is home to a venerated statue of the Virgin Mary, believed to possess miraculous powers. Visitors come from far and wide to seek blessings and pray for intercession. Return to Assisi for dinner and overnight.
Day 8: Assisi (St. Francis)
As you visit the birthplace of St. Francis, you will become captivated as the atmosphere has not changed since St. Francis began his ministry, in the early 13th-century. You will start your tour at the St. Francis Basilica, visit his tomb of St. Francis, and have the opportunity to view a series of frescoes depicting his life, along with a few of the saint’s possessions. Followed by a visit to the Santuario Della Spogliazione where Blessed Carlo Acutis’ tomb is placed. Carlo is the first millennial to be declared Blessed who loved the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. From there, you will continue on a walking tour through this picturesque town, including the birthplace of St. Francis, and end with a tour of the Church that honors St. Clare, the foundress of the Poor Clare Sisters. This Saint followed the teachings of St. Francis very closely by also living a life of poverty and humility. Enjoy some free time on your own – you may take this time for additional prayer, shop in the many gift shops or enjoy a nice lunch. After lunch, you will board the bus, which will take you outside of the walls of Assisi, to the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. This is where St. Francis spent most of life. This Basilica is made up of two structures, both of which you will visit. The first structure, is the “Porziuncola”, which is where St. Francis founded his order of the Friar Minor (Franciscans). The second, is the “Capella del Transito”, which is the place of St. Francis’ death. During your time here, you will have the opportunity to visit the beautiful Rose Garden where St. Francis and other friars lived, as well as the cave where the Saint retired to pray. Return to the hotel for dinner and an overnight.
Day 9: Assisi - Gubbio - La Verna - Assisi
After breakfast, you will drive through the beautiful Umbrian mountains to Gubbio. Enjoy this medieval town with a visit of St. Francis Church, where you will be celebrating Mass. After Mass, visit a town that seems painted onto the hill, a succession of backdrops against which towers and houses stand out, all embraced by walls. The town had been freed by St. Francis from a terrible and fierce wolf who afflicted it. After lunch on your own, continue to La Verna, the place where St. Francis, over the years, had been seven times, the last time in 1224 where he received the stigmata. Here you will be able to pray in the Chapel of the Stigmata, the Basilica and the Chapel of Saint Mary of the Angels. You will also be able to admire the beautiful artworks of Andrea della Robbia. Return to Assisi for dinner and your last overnight.
Day 10: Return Home
After an early breakfast and heartfelt farewells, your group will leave by motor coach and transfer to the Rome Fiumicino airport for return flights home.

Pilgrimage to Medjugorje – Marian Pilgrimages to Medjugorje
The Medjugorje Pilgrimage 2024 or 2025 tour spends one week in the peaceful mountain hamlet in Bosnia Herzegovina where the Virgin Mary has been appearing since June 25, 1981. After arriving in Dubrovnik, Split, or Sarajevo, you will be met by a local guide from Medjugorje who will bring you back to his home village recounting the story of Our Lady’s first apparitions along the way. You will attend Mass and pray the Rosary daily with the villagers and other pilgrims from around the world at St. James Church. During the Medjugorje Pilgrimage, you will have the opportunity to climb Apparition Hill where Our Lady first appeared, and to make the Way of the Cross as you ascend Cross Mountain. Your guide for the Medjugorje Pilgrimage Tour will arrange for you to meet any of the visionaries who are in the village at the time and to hear young men from the Cenacolo community share their stories of conversion and witness to the healing power of Faith. It is said that Our Lady invites all her Children to Medjugorje to lead them to a closer relationship with Her Son, Jesus, and to exhort us to Pray for Peace in our hearts, in our homes, and our communities. For more information regarding Medjugorje itself, consult the Official Medjugorje website here. Book your Marian Pilgrimage to Medjugorje in 2024 or 2025 today.

Beautiful Medjugorje pilgrimage! Everything was perfect! The travel arrangements, the accommodations and the most holy spiritual experience of being in Medjugorje was beyond perfect! Thank you Catholic Journeys for all the work put into these Pilgrimages.
This marked my third pilgrimage with Catholic Journeys, following my initial experience a decade ago in Medjugorje, a pilgrimage to the Holy Land two years ago, and a Medjugorje pilgrimage last month. Each pilgrimage has proven to be a truly unforgettable experience.
I can genuinely attest that this recent pilgrimage to Medjugorje was nothing short of perfect. Our group visited Apparition Hill, walked through fields each morning to attend Mass, and I discovered my preferred adoration chapel – the Oasis of Peace. I am forever grateful that I took this Catholic journey, it brought true joy to my life and I enjoyed every second of it.
The accommodations at Marija’s Magnificat Center were delightful, and the staff was courteous and very helpful. I enjoyed the meals and the overall stay.
The profound sense of peace that enveloped me during this last journey was truly remarkable. I am eager to return, and I would do so without any hesitation. I will never forget this trip, it has truly impacted my life for the better.

Hi Jimmy and Catholic Journey Staff, Thank you so much for the opportunity to have a pilgrimage to Medjugorje. I did have a great experience – peace and joy filled with the encounter of Our Lady of Medugorje’s presence. Surely, I am and have been blessed with this grace-filled pilgrimage to Medjugorje to complete my Golden Jubilee as a Religious Sister, the Bride of Christ. May God continue to bless you and your staff for the great work in preparing the times, good opportunities for people to have a deeper relationship with God and His dear our Mother Mary. Wishing you, Fr. Paul, Marcelle, and Hannah and your staff a very Mary Christmas and Happy, grace-filled and good health for the New Year. Love and prayers, Sr. Mary Kim
This pilgrimage to Medjugorje was one of my greatest experiences. Everyone got along greatly. Our guide was excellent as usual, Terri Smith was fantastic sharing her experience and the group itself shares stories and makes comment on WhatsApp. I was able to celebrate Mass with my group and con-celebrate daily. I really enjoyed myself as I think I will have new friends for life. I highly recommend this Medjugorje pilgrimage tour and hope to go back one day.
Our recent Pilgrimage to Medjugorge was delightful and filled with signs from God and blessings from Our Mother. All of our flight schedules worked out perfectly and the proximity of Hotel Villa Mia was an excellent choice as it is adjacent to the St.James Catholic Church campus. Jimmy and the staff at Catholic Journeys went out of their way to join us up with their existing pilgrim group even though we booked a month prior to the event. As always I hated to leave that heavenly realm of Medjugorge. Thanks for this spirit-filled Medjugorje pilgrimage.

Will Taylor Swift add 'Tortured Poets' to international Eras Tour? Our picks.
A double album. Thirty one songs. Two hours and two minutes. In the spaces between the international, record- breaking Eras Tour, Taylor Swift released her 11th era: "The Tortured Poets Department." But will the behemoth tour make room for the newest addition to Swift's vast catalog and how?
"The Tortured Poets Department" showcases the singer's mastery to connect words like puzzle pieces seamlessly depicting the human experience and complex themes of false wedding promises, relationship imprisonment, break-ups and drug escapism, religion versus rebellion, childhood retrospection and the duality of internally suffering while externally performing. It would be a surprise for her not to push this body of art into the spotlight.
But how it fits into the 44-song three hour and 15-minute Eras tour is anyone's guess. And we won't find out until she resumes the tour on May 9 in Paris. I'll be there.
Read Melissa Ruggieri's review Taylor Swift's 'Tortured Poets' is hauntingly brilliant, even the 15 surprise songs
Whether or not she's incorporating the era has already been decided. Swift is 13 steps ahead . She plans her moves years in advance. There is a two-month break from the tour and she has been spending time in Los Angeles. Her team of dancers have not been as active on social media possibly because they're rehearsing a new set. Or maybe it's a coincidence?
The simplest path would be to absorb some of the the 31 songs into the acoustic set that comes after "Bad Blood" during the "1989" era. Swift has used the 2024 surprise songs to play mash-ups on the guitar and the piano. It's when she makes announcements and it's a custom gift to concertgoers and fans watch in envy on livestreams from around the world.
'Tortured Poets' release live updates What to know as Taylor Swift's new album debuts
More likely, she will add a "Tortured Poets" set. The show is segmented, allowing a new era to squeeze in. She could open the show with the new era, although "Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince's" opening line is a perfect opening for an artist who has released seven albums and hasn't seen fans: "It's been a long time coming." She could end the show with the set, but "Karma" is a good show closer.
Cue the confetti. If she ends the tour with "Tortured Poets," I'm guessing "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart" is the closer.
The writing shines bright like Swift's glittering sequin stars which is reminiscent of and relative to "Folklore" and "Evermore." For the flow of the concert, it makes more sense to not place "Tortured Poets" next to these albums. The show flows with a narrative that spans almost two decades with highs and lows of energy. Two areas that could be good: after "Reputation" and before "Speak Now" or after the secret songs and before "Midnights." Maybe she dives into the stage to swim to the an asylum of typewriters and tormented thoughts.
The four eras with the most amount of songs are the latest records she owned that aren't re-records: "Lover" (six songs), "Folklore" (seven songs), "Evermore" (five songs) and "Midnights" (seven songs). Will she follow that flow? Will she cut songs from these eras?
I could see her performing the lead single "Fortnight," title track "The Tortured Poets Department," Eras Tour song "I Can Do It With a Broken Heart," "Down Bad," "Who's Afraid of Little Old Me," "thanK you aIMee" and "So High School."
Swift holds the answer key. Sixty-nine shows are left on the recording shattering magnum opus for 2024.
