Background [ ]

During his adult life, Calixto and his sister, Lucilla , were bequeathed a large fortune. [1] Traveling Tamriel, they collected several rare items, such as The Book of Fate , The Dancer's Flute , and Ysgramor's Soup Spoon . Unfortunately, his sister died during this time, and so after settling in Windhelm, he opened a curiosity shop in her name to display their collection. [1]

Hjerimsecretroom

The scene of Calixto's ritual in Hjerim.

Secretly, the grief of losing his sister was too much for him to bear, and Calixto began to lead a life of necromancy in hopes of resurrecting Lucilla, which involved the murder of several young women in Windhelm. [2] The basis for this ritual appears to be of Aldmer origin, and was then interpreted by the Ayleids and first transcribed by the Altmer . [3] To help this, he authored a journal in three parts, which describe the exact elements needed for the magic to work, [3] and for this purpose, he acquired the Necromancer's Amulet [4] [5] and Nordic embalming tools to use on the victims. [6]

In addition to an unknown first murder, his second victim in the necromantic ritual was Friga Shatter-Shield , the twin sister of Nilsine ; [7] doing so gave him access to Hjerim , which he took up residence for the ritual. [4] He then planned to kill Susanna the Wicked , believing her tendons to be of exquisite quality, and apparently came close to doing so before being thwarted by the appearance of guards. [8] The ritual is almost complete as the Dragonborn arrives in Windhelm. [2] [3] His actions have earned him the name "the Butcher," [7] [9] [10] to which Viola Giordano has placed letters all throughout the city in order to warn the people of Windhelm about him; however, Calixto has taken most of these down so they do not hinder his efforts. [4] [7] [10]

Necromanceramulet

The Necromancer's Amulet, which Calixto uses for his necromantic goals.

Calixto is a relatively jovial man, happily proclaiming for all to visit the House of Curiosities for their enjoyment. He appears to enjoy displaying his collection, saying that he believes his sister would be proud to bring smiles to visitors. [1] That being said, after Wuunferth reveals the true nature of the Strange Amulet , he claims that Calixto and his books are "often confused" on such matters, although Wuunferth does say that it happens to "the best of us," suggesting that the mage holds some respect for Calixto. [5] Guards also seem to respect him to a degree, saying he "has a good eye" for strange trinkets. [7] Jorleif believes Calixto to bit a bit "odd," although he stops short of suspecting anything dubious about the imperial. [11]

Calixto secretly criticizes the mages at the College of Winterhold for dabbling in magic with which they are already familiar, glamorizing the possible innovations of necromancy. [8] He also appears to have little respect for Windhelm, calling the guards "idiots" [8] and describing portions of the city and its populace as "rugged bits." [2] He is completely devoted to the necromantic ritual, to the point of showing little to no remorse for murdering women besides a passing comment at Susanna's murder scene; [1] however, this could be but an act. His devotion appears to come from his relationship with his sister, whom he loves dearly, and describes as someone who loved the world so much while he did not. [2] On top of everything, though, he appears to hold a sense of righteousness to what he is doing, believing that the women he has murdered "would surely thank me for the great gift I give them." [2]

Susanna Murder Scene

The murder scene of Susanna, where Calixto stands as a "witness."

Based on this information, the Dragonborn will accuse Wuunferth of the crime. If they choose to speak to Jorleif, he will shortly arrest the court mage, and the case will close. Windhelm will appear safe again for a few days. Unfortunately, the Dragonborn will find a new female body outside of Candlehearth Hall , where guards will be in disbelief since the killer had been caught; Calixto will be at the scene again, although he will have nothing special to say. The Dragonborn goes to the imprisoned Wuunferth, who will make it clear that the true murderer eluded capture. He will then assist the Dragonborn in catching the Butcher. Alternatively, the Dragonborn can speak to Wuunferth directly in the Palace of the Kings , who will prove his innocence by telling that he was investigating the murders himself. In this case, Calixto will not claim a fourth victim. Regardless of the path chosen earlier, Wuunferth predicts where and when the next murder will occur and, suspecting the killer will strike again that same night, he sends the Dragonborn to the Stone Quarter.

Calixto Murders Arivanya

Calixto as he murders Arivanya in the Stone Quarter.

Arriving in the market, the Dragonborn will find Calixto standing to the side; unlike everyone else in the market, he will keep to himself. After a moment, his next victim— Nilsine Shatter-Shield , Jora , Hermir Strong-Heart , Idesa Sadri , or Arivanya —will suddenly scream as Calixto approaches. The guards do not react to the murder, and so it is up to the Dragonborn to save the victim. If not stopped in the marketplace in time, Calixto will kill his target and then run to Hjerim , where he will be hostile to the Dragonborn upon entering. Calixto is shortly killed and the murderous streak is brought to an end.

Dialogue [ ]

Inside Calixto's House of Curiosities:

"Welcome to the House of Curiosities! I offer a brief tour for a few coins, or you can simply browse at your leisure."

"Always a shame when someone has to die."

After investigating Hjerim:

If the Amulet was not sold yet:

About that amulet... "The Wheelstone? Have you decided to sell it, yet?"

Conversations [ ]

Elda : "Calixto, someone left an interesting ring in here a few weeks ago. Would you like a look?" Calixto: "Of course, my dear. It may prove to be quite the curiosity! One must always be alert." Elda: "Well, I seem to have misplaced it at the moment. But it was white, like alabaster, with three bright rubies set in it." Calixto: "Be very careful with that. It sounds as if it may be the Death Ring of Dro'farahn. A ring of the most dangerous sort." Elda: "Oh dear. What should I do?" Calixto: "Bring it to me straight away when you find it. Don't dally. I can keep it safe." Elda: "Oh, thank the gods you're in Windhelm, Calixto!" Calixto: "Think nothing of it."

Elda: "Calixto, do you know if there's any truth to these rumors of dragons?" Calixto: "Eh. I try not to trouble myself with stories of the outside world. Now, if someone brings me a dragon scale, that's a different story." Elda: "But how would you know it's real?" Calixto: "Ah, I can't reveal all my secrets to you. But rest assured, I would know."

  • "If you've got some time, stop by the House of Curiosities. I promise you'll see wonders!"
  • "Welcome, friend, to Calixto's House of Curiosities!"
  • "My sister and I once traveled the world to assemble our collection. Such adventures we had!"
  • "I don't care much for the war one way or the other."
  • "It bothers me that fewer people come to Windhelm these days."

Calixto will say the following statements, in order, when showing the Dragonborn his collection of mysterious objects:

  • "These tools were found in a crypt outside Windhelm. They belonged to the ancient Nords who dwelt in Skyrim before the days of the First Empire. Most scholars believe that the Nords of old used these implements to prepare their dead for burial. What macabre mysteries would these tools reveal if they could but speak?"
  • "Here is the Book of Fate, discovered in a secret room in the Arcane University. The writing in the book describes the destiny of its reader, so the words change from one person to the next. Some see only blank pages, and nobody knows why. Perhaps some of us are born with no destiny, or maybe the blank pages signify an imminent death."
  • "Ah, now here is an item out of legend. This is Ysgramor's Soup Spoon. Now, I know what you're thinking - this is no spoon, it's a fork! Nobody can eat soup with a fork! Well, my friend, you did not know Ysgramor."
  • "Don't let this innocent-looking flute fool you, for this is the Dancer's Pipe. Legend holds that the Dancer's Pipe has won wars, toppled empires and changed the very course of history. None know its origins, but the stories say that men who hear its music are compelled to dance uncontrollably, no matter the peril. To activate this strange power, one must only speak the magic words, which are... Oh my, I very nearly got us both into a nasty predicament, didn't I?"
  • "And with that, the tour is over. I thank you for your patronage, and I hope to see you again soon!"
  • By pick-pocketing the key, it is possible to discover this journal before discovering that he is the killer, and before he blames the murders on Wuunferth the Unliving ; however, doing this will not affect the quest in any way, and the Dragonborn will still have to discover who the killer is.
  • During " Summerset Shadows ," Niranye will reveal that Calixto's first victim was Fjotli Cruel-Sea .
  • If Calixto is asked to give a tour while not in his house, he may enter the building, leaving the door locked behind him. The lock can be picked, after which the tour may or may not resume normally.
  • Also, during the same quest, he may not attempt to murder someone but start running like a normal civilian. Both attacking and killing him will add bounty and guards will start to attack.
  • After obtaining the Strange Amulet it is impossible to sell it to Calixto.
  •  PC    Sometimes, as Calixto goes to the Stone Quarter for the final murder, he and the other character may get stuck, and will stand in the Quarter indefinitely. Calixto cannot be spoken to during this time. The only way to finish the quest is through console commands, but the characters will remain stuck there. Wuunferth will also remain, in the jails, despite being exonerated.

  • in order to have this house available to you you need to become the thane of windhelm and by doing that you need to do a few quests for ulfric I still have not completed the main quest "blood on ice", simply because of a glitch, but yes you do have to do a few quests and you also have to help some of his people out I hope this helps you out. nocturn - 9 years ago - report 1   1
  • You can make the house available one of two ways: - Complete Blood on the Ice - Complete the war for either the Empire or the Stormcloaks. nwanamaker - 12 years ago - report 3   4
  • The Blood on thin ice quest can only be started by entering and exiting windhelm fast traveling to a randon location then fast traveling back to the windhelm stables. You must do this a total of 4 times then head to the windhelm graveyard at night. Also this quest is bugged in a number of ways only one i know of is a dark brotherhood quest where you have to kill a girl in windhelm who is part of the quest which if you do wont allow you to start the quest. Hope this helped : ) Angelaus666 - 11 years ago - report 1   2
  • Complete the blood on ice quest before finishing civil war. I've had to reload a previous save right before we attacked windhelm because once the imperials attack windhelm the body disappears and the guards are gone lol. gamer3610 - 9 years ago - report 0   1
  • To get the house, visit Windhelm 2-3 times. A funeral should show up at the graveyard, and if you go over to the funeral, a guard should talk to you and give you the "Blood on the Ice" quest. Complete it and you get the house. NOTE: The quest will only work for low level characters. Alpha117 - 9 years ago - report 2   3
  • Alright, in short, you have to: 1.) Complete "Blood on the Ice" 2.) Help the people of Windhelm, and become a thane (doesn't matter which Jarl.) 3.) Talk to Jorleif, after everything is taken care of. Oh, and tell him to take care of the mess. Hjerim House is a buggy, glitch infested mess, but it's the third largest house in the game, unless you feel like building your own. Reaper_Wolf - 9 years ago - report 2   3
  • Yes. The Blood on the Ice quest involves that house, so if you complete it, the house becomes available to buy. You can start that quest by spending a day or two in windhelm, and going over to the graveyard part of it to find a dead body and some people standing around it. WuldNaKest - 12 years ago - report 1   3
  • I went all the way through the civil war thing and im still not able to buy the house despite being offered to. im thinking it might be a better idea to jump ships to the imperials. I hear the imperial jarl is easier on letting you buy the house. also, I hear if you have a master level lockpick skill you can break in. that could lead somewhere perhaps. manic2 - 10 years ago - report 0   2
  • Try moving heaven and earth. I've heard it's a requisite for purchasing anything larger than a bread box in Skyrim. 1KingKRool - 9 years ago - report 3   5
  • You must complete blood on the ice but you don't have you aline yourself to Stormcloak or the legion but there us sometimes a glitch were if you don't buy the house the steward even after if you so choose to complete the civil war he keeps saying notify ulfric of the success in the east Adamant_Sigmas - 10 years ago - report 1   4

Your 48-hour tour guide of Moscow this winter!

windhelm house tour

9 am – Visit the Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

Christmas market on Red Square

The first thing that every tourist should do by default is visit the very heart of Moscow – it’s main and most beautiful (which ‘krasnaya’ actually meant in Old Russian) square!

There are several ways to explore it:

  • Take a selfie with Spasskaya Tower
  • Have a warm drink at the Christmas market (which lasts until mid-January)
  • Visit Lenin’s Mausoleum
  • Shop in the gorgeous adjacent GUM department store
  • Visit St. Basil’s Cathedral (and learn that it’s actually several churches under one roof).

11 am – It’s Kremlin time!

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Inside the Moscow Kremlin

Entering the Kremlin is, actually, a bit of a quest, as it’s a presidential facility with no general access. You need to buy a ticket or, better still, book a guided tour. Inside the Kremlin’s walls, you will find ancient cathedrals, in which Russian tsars used to be crowned and buried, as well as explore the magnificent architecture of the Kremlin that reflects the rich history of the country. And, finally, you could also make a quick visit to the Moscow Kremlin Museums and admire artifacts from various Russian tsarist eras: carriages, thrones, crowns and the most incredible armory and jewelry.

For more information, visit the official website of the Kremlin . It’s open from 10 am to 5 pm (and it’s closed on Thursdays) in winter.

2 pm – Watch the changing of the Guard

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The honor guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

A very spectacular (and free) thing to do is watch how the honor guard does their ceremonial change at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Eternal Flame, situated in Alexander Garden, right next to the Kremlin wall. Every hour, from 8 am to 8 pm, the 1st Company of the Kremlin (Presidential) Regiment performs this rather old and beautiful tradition. But, be warned, it's often overcrowded.

3 pm – Enjoy a green oasis just in the center

Florarium in Zaryadye

Florarium in Zaryadye

Just a few steps from the Red Square, you will find the fabulous Zaryadye park. Opened in 2017, it is designed by renowned American architect bureau ‘Diller Scofidio + Renfro’. You can walk among the very cozy botanical decorations and explore Russia’s climate zones, as each of them is represented in dedicated areas, complete with flora from those zones.

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The floating bridge in Zaryadye Park

The park also has an underground museum, an “ice cave” and a 3D cinema, where you can take part in a virtual adventure – a flight over Moscow! However, the piece de resistance is a floating boomerang bridge over the Moskva River, one of the best places to take a selfie.

You can also grab a quick lunch or relax with a cup of coffee or tea in the park.

7 pm – Arrange a ballet night

The Bolshoi Theater

The Bolshoi Theater

Of course, the most fancy way to finish your day in Moscow would be to go to the ballet at the Bolshoi Theater (in a perfect world, to see ‘The Nutcracker’!). However, getting tickets to the Bolshoi is not an easy task and should be done well in advance of your visit.

But, don’t be upset if you don’t manage to get tickets to the Bolshoi. Moscow has dozens of other options to see a ballet (or opera). No less brilliant performances can be seen in the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theater or in The State Kremlin Palace (by the way, this is another way to get a quick glimpse inside the Kremlin!).

10:30 pm – Have a late dinner in a fancy restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

Dr Zhivago restaurant

There are not so many other cities with such a big choice of restaurants in a range of tastes and styles. In 2021, the authoritative Michelin guide announced their pick of the best of Moscow’s restaurants. And here’s our guide to all the places with Russian cuisine for any budget. But, if you happen to be in the area of the Bolshoi or Nemirovich-Danchenko Theater, then ‘Dr. Zhivago’ would definitely be a nice option (and it’s open around the clock).

DAY 2

9 am – grab a moscow coffee.

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Winter festivities mood in Moscow

Moscow is definitely a coffee city! You can find coffee shops on every corner and they all offer a huge range of drinks. Try a ‘raf’ coffee, a sweet, creamy drink that was created in Russia, or dare to pick one of the very unusual offers, like cheese coffee or a Soviet candy style one (check out our coffee guide here ).

10 am – Take a river cruise

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Winter boating along the Moskva River

Another exciting way to explore Moscow is to observe it from the water. Boats cruise along the Moskva River all year round. Most begin their route from the Hotel Ukraine, one of Stalin's ‘Seven Sister’ skyscrapers, and will bring you back to the same spot after passing the medieval Novodevichy Convent, Moscow State University and Luzhniki Stadium, the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and giant monument to Peter the Great and many other sightseeings.

It’s always at optimum temperature inside the boat, which also has huge panoramic windows. Select boats also offer a full dining experience, so it is also a nice place to have breakfast or lunch.

If you are not a water person, then discover other, unusual sides of Moscow – pick one of the activities we’ve prepared for you here !

1 pm – Visit ‘Russia’ Expo and taste a bunch of Russian regional cuisines

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Russia Expo at VDNKh

Until April 2024, the Soviet-era VDNKh exhibition park is hosting the huge ‘Russia’ expo, with tons of activities and expositions devoted to Russia, its culture, science and nature. Check out our special guide on what to do there!

An entire ‘House of Russian Cuisine’ has been opened at the expo. You will find 15 food stands with flagship dishes from Kamchatka, Siberia, Karelia and other regions of Russia. Imagine trying a range of cuisines and dishes in one place without even having to travel anywhere, be it Altai pelmeni, Tula kalach or Caucasian pies! A perfect place to grab some lunch.

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

House of Russian cuisines at VDNKh

The VDNKh exhibition park is a great place to visit, in general! Its pavilions are the perfect example of Stalinit Empire style architecture and you can almost feel as if you’ve traveled back in time! You will also find several interesting museums in the park – devoted to space exploration, Russian history and even a ‘Special Purpose Garage’, which showcases the various vehicles used by the country’s leaders.

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

'Sun of Moscow' wheel

And, finally, you can ride Europe's tallest panoramic wheel – ‘Sun of Moscow’ – that will give you panoramic views of the city – from a height of 140 meters!

5 pm – Ice skate with view & mulled wine

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating rink on Red Square (GUM department store on the background)

Ice skating is one of the most popular and affordable activities in Moscow. There are several great ice skating rinks in picturesque locations that are open all winter long. One of the biggest rinks in Europe is also at the aforementioned VDNKh or you can visit the one in Gorky Park, another very popular Moscow spot, or the small, but fancy rink – right on Red Square!

All the parks offer ice skate rental, so the only things you need are warm clothes, a charged phone to record your memories and a good mood!  Moscow also gets dark at 4:30 pm in winter and hundreds of lights are switched on, turning the city into a giant fairy tale!

A mulled wine with a view

A mulled wine with a view

And, if you are not a sports person, we’ve picked several other unusual activities that you could do in Moscow instead. For example, did you know that there is an entire district of dacha (countryside) houses, just 10 minutes from the center, surrounded by giant new highrises? How about taking a stroll there and feeling the early Soviet atmosphere?

8 pm – Warm up & laugh out loud

After all these outdoor activities, what could be better than a warm cozy bar with a hot drink and nice company? Moscow is a city full of entertainment for all tastes. So, if you know the Russian language or want to practice it, go to a theater or catch a stand-up comedy show. Moscow even has comedy shows in English, where you can hear both Russians speaking fluent English or foreigners (including Brits and Americans) who live in Russia speaking in broken or heavily-accented Russian (Check their show dates on the ‘ Moscow English Comedy ’ Telegram channel)!

11 pm – Finish by partying the night away!

Propaganda club in Moscow

Propaganda club in Moscow

Moscow never sleeps, as you might have heard. Which means there are plenty of bars and nightclubs where you can have a drink (or two or three; be sure to check out how Russians make Black Russian and White Russian cocktails) and chat with incredibly different people. Have fun and don’t miss your flight (or miss it and stay longer in the best city in the world!)!

That's it! See you soon in Moscow

Online:Grymharth's Woe

Gold

Grymharth's Woe is a medium player house in Windhelm . The house has no exterior at all; instead you are greeted by a spacious 2-story hall with a fireplace. On the left there are stairs leading to a second floor and a small room under those stairs. At the top of the stairs there is a medium sized room with a fireplace and a doorway to a slightly smaller room.

It is conveniently situated very close to Windhelm Outlaws Refuge for those needing a quick means of escaping a thorny legal situation. Also nearby are the city's crafting areas, and Windhelm Wayshrine is a short walk away.
